Round 44

“Hmm?”

Ara, who had been carried on my back, rubbed her eyes as she woke up.

She always had an uncanny knack for sensing the smell of food.

“Are you awake?”

“Yeah, I slept well… yaawn.”

Ara yawned and stretched before noticing the pile of eggplants and cucumbers in the storage room.

“Oh! Eggplants! Cucumbers!”

“That’s right.”

Since she had seen them even before they were harvested, Ara knew about the eggplants and cucumbers.

However, she had never tasted them and had always been curious about their flavors.

Now, she finally had the chance to try them.

‘Seeing this pile, it looks like there’s more than I thought.’

Had the slimes not eaten them?

When I glanced around, one of the slimes eating a cucumber gave me a look as if asking what I was looking at.

“You’ve eaten some, but there’s still a lot left.”

Good, good.

I should tell Jae-seong about the eggplants and cucumbers quickly.

But first, let’s check the effects of these crops.

[Magic-Infused Eggplant LV.1]

[Contains faint magic.]

[When consumed, a random ability’s level increases by 1 for 7 seconds.]

[Magic-Infused Cucumber LV.1]

[Contains faint magic.]

[When consumed, it alleviates dehydration symptoms and temporarily quenches thirst. Permanently improves skin health slightly.]

These were extraordinary effects.

For ordinary people, the eggplant’s effect was useless, but for Awakened beings, it seemed like it was worth researching.

And then there was the cucumber.

“Skin health…”

It could make one more beautiful.

Just by eating it.

The unexpected nature of these items left me momentarily stunned.

Honestly, the cucumber’s straightforward effect was more striking than the eggplant’s unique one.

“No, both are amazing. I was momentarily dazzled.”

In any case, these were crops I had grown and harvested.

Figuring out how to use them to my benefit was the priority.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, can I eat this?”

Ara, still on my back, drooled.

Feeling my shoulder getting wet, I glanced back to see her unable to take her eyes off the slimes munching on the eggplants and cucumbers.

“Yeah. Let’s eat first and think later.”

Effects aside, taste is also important.

But eggplants and cucumbers… Honestly, they didn’t seem like they would taste great.

I had only eaten cooked eggplant, and cucumbers… well.

‘I’ll know once I try it.’

I set Ara down and picked up an eggplant and a cucumber in each hand.

I started with the cucumber, which I was more accustomed to eating raw.

Crunch!

A refreshing sensation spread through my mouth.

Soon, a pleasant texture followed.

Crunch! Crunch!

‘Compared to other crops, it’s quite ordinary.’

But the more I chewed, a peculiar flavor emerged, and combined with the crisp texture, it felt incredibly addictive.

Glancing sideways, I saw Ara, like me, holding an eggplant and a cucumber in each hand, munching away.

“Our Ara, you’re already pretty, but you’ll become even prettier.”

“I’m getting prettier!”

Even the way she spoke with her mouth full of cucumber was cute.

After finishing the cucumber, I looked at the eggplant.

“Eggplants… aren’t they supposed to be cooked?”

Looking at the softer eggplant, I thought it should at least be grilled.

The slimes seemed to eat it without any issue, but I felt a bit hesitant.

In the end, I left Ara and the slimes to prepare the brazier that Bokkeum had spat out.

After hastily lighting it, I skewered the eggplants and began grilling them.

The kids seemed interested.

“Does it taste better that way?”

“Not sure. Want to try?”

“Yes!”

Hmm, does this mean I’ll have to spend the whole day grilling eggplants?

I rotated the soft eggplant to cook it evenly.

Since it’s a vegetable with a lot of moisture, I aimed to concentrate its flavor in the center.

“Putting my heart into this…”

I used both hands to grill two eggplants.

First, the ones for Ara and me, and then I’d quickly grill more for the slimes, who were watching expectantly.

“Is this good enough?”

If it were Jae-seong, he would’ve grilled them perfectly, but since I didn’t know much about cooking, I did it moderately well.

“It’s hot, so be careful…”

I couldn’t help but warn her, though it wasn’t necessary.

Ara seemed immune to both heat and cold.

She could eat anything.

“Blow, blow~!”

Yet Ara obediently blew on it, despite not needing to cool it down.

She puffed her cheeks and blew awkwardly.

‘Seon-ah would’ve lost her mind if she saw this.’

Ara, showing an unprecedented level of cuteness, soon opened her mouth wide and ate the eggplant.

Then, she clasped her cheeks and smiled happily.

“Mmm~!”

Distracted by Ara, I had left the eggplant unattended, so I blew on it and cautiously bit the edge.

“Hot, hot.”

The rich moisture stored within the eggplant burst out, revealing its inherent flavor.

Unexpectedly, it was chewy rather than mushy.

“Mmm!”

I could understand why Ara was impressed.

If eaten raw, the moisture wouldn’t have exploded like this, but grilling it made the flavor deeper and the texture and moisture more enjoyable.

Honestly, in terms of taste, could the eggplant be slightly superior to the cucumber?

‘The cucumber is crisp and refreshing, while the eggplant has this moisture and deep flavor.’

They had entirely different sensations, so personal preference might vary, but they were flavors anyone could enjoy.

And since these weren’t even cooked dishes, just eaten as they were, I could only imagine how much tastier they would be once Jae-seong worked his culinary magic on them.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, more grilled eggplant, please!”

“Alright.”

As expected, it seemed today would be spent grilling eggplants.

Ara waited for the eggplant to finish grilling while crunching on a cucumber.

“It’s delicious!”

“I’m glad you like it. Our Ara will definitely become a beauty.”

“I’m already a beauty!”

“Yes. I’ll also try to become a handsome guy.”

Crunch!

* * *

A building located in Gangnam, Seoul.

This was the headquarters of the Iron Blood Guild, one of the top guilds in South Korea.

The area was always crowded with people, and high-profile Awakened frequently appeared, showcasing the guild’s prestige.

Click! Click!

“Hey, hasn’t Moon Chang-joo shown up today?”

“He hasn’t been seen for a few days. But he cleared a level 6 dungeon recently, so he must be resting.”

“Wow! There’s Lee A-rin! Hurry, take a picture!”

The Iron Blood Guild was so prosperous that paparazzi always camped outside, snapping photos.

However, Baek Tae-seop, the guild’s representative, was troubled by a particular issue.

Knock knock.

“Sir, may I come in?”

“Come in.”

Baek Tae-seop, in his private office, was an elderly man with white hair.

He had once been an active support-type Awakened, but now he focused solely on managing the guild.

Creak-

“Sir, here is the report you requested.”

“Thank you, good work.”

“And there’s one more piece of news. We just received word that the antidote project we commissioned has failed again.”

“Sigh… I understand.”

Baek Tae-seop sighed, as if he hadn’t been expecting much in the first place, and nodded.

After more than ten years of failures, he was half resigned to his fate.

“Commission another company. And keep the current ones as well.”

Still, Baek Tae-seop couldn’t give up.

Not as a guild leader, and not as a father.

Baek Seung-hyun, his son and once a genius Awakened who drew everyone’s attention, was now barely surviving in the guild’s medical facility.

“Understood, sir. But if we do that, you’ll have to sell part of the guild’s shares…”

Every year, a substantial amount of money was spent researching a cure for the Poison of Avarice, but there had been no progress.

Baek Tae-seop’s secretary, knowing this, looked at him with concern.

“Sell them. The guild shares are nothing.”

Baek Tae-seop regretted his decisions.

He hadn’t always treated the guild shares lightly.

In fact, he had valued the Iron Blood Guild more than his own life.

That’s why he made a grave mistake.

To expand the guild’s influence, he sent his son Baek Seung-hyun into the Dungeon of Avarice.

It was a reckless decision.

Baek Seung-hyun was an outstanding supporter, but merely a Level 7 Awakened.

For someone like him to enter a Level 9 dungeon was tantamount to courting death.

‘Seung-hyun…’

Baek Tae-seop, who had dedicated his life to the guild, only realized what was truly important when his son returned addicted.

But by then, it was too late.

His son had already fallen into a critical condition, and now, over a year had passed with him remaining in a coma.

“…Understood.”

“You may leave now. I’m tired.”

Even as the secretary left, maintaining his Iron Blood demeanor, Baek Tae-seop muttered to himself once alone.

“The guild we built together. It seems I won’t be in this position for much longer.”

Baek Tae-seop’s late wife, now departed, had been an Awakened like him.

The guild they founded together was the present Iron Blood Guild.

That’s why he was so attached to it.

He didn’t want to feel the emptiness left by his wife, who had passed away while giving birth to their son Baek Seung-hyun in the dungeon.

At the same time, he had resented his son.

Yet, why hadn’t he realized then that his son was the precious fruit of their love?

“The truly important thing wasn’t this superficial guild. How could I have been so blind? Don’t forgive me.”

Hot tears streamed down Baek Tae-seop’s cheeks.

Realizing too late what truly mattered, his only remaining concern was his son.

If he lost his son too, he wouldn’t be able to bear it.

It was then.

Knock, knock, knock!

“Ahem! Who is it?”

“Sir, urgent news has arrived!”

Baek Tae-seop hurriedly wiped away his tears and composed himself.

“Come in.”

“Apologies for disturbing you while you’re tired. There’s urgent news…”

“Speak.”

“Choi Young-seong, the former head of research at Ara Hongryeon , has contacted us.”

“Ara Hongryeon ?”

Once lauded as the first guild in South Korea, it now struggled to remain in the top five.

Even so, it was remarkable among over a hundred guilds, though it fell short of its former symbolic stature.

“Choi Young-seong abruptly brought up the antidote.”

“What?!”

Baek Tae-seop stood up abruptly.

He then calmed himself and asked coldly.

“Why now? What’s his connection to the antidote…?”

“Choi Young-seong’s wife is the Awakened Kim Si-young. Kim Si-young also participated in the Dungeon of Avarice…”

“Ah! Kim Si-young is Choi Young-seong’s wife. No wonder the antidote came up.”

Baek Tae-seop nodded, recalling the information he had momentarily forgotten.

“So, what does he want?”

“He wants to meet you.”

“Hmm.”

There had been some interaction with Ara Hongryeon  in the past.

Baek Tae-seop had once teamed up with some of Ara Hongryeon ’s executives before guilds even existed.

“Come to think of it, we haven’t been in touch. Things have been so hectic.”

Recently, he had been feeling disillusioned with running the guild.

He thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to meet some old friends and catch up.

“Contact Choi Young-seong. Let’s arrange to meet at the Ara Hongryeon  guild.”

“Understood. I’ll check your free schedule and arrange it accordingly.”

“Thank you.”

Though the contact was about the antidote, he didn’t have high expectations.

Baek Tae-seop saw it as an opportunity to share stories with someone who understood his pain.

He was unaware that Kim Si-young had already been cured.

Act 94

Prev I TOC I Next

Immersed in her thoughts, Linne’s head was filled with various thoughts, making it complicated. She was shocked to learn that her master, who had always guided her along the path of righteousness, was undergoing ‘demonization’.

Furthermore, she was disturbed by the sight of him brandishing a sword at her and Julian. ‘Even when he expelled Julian, he did not take his life but let him go…’

What kind of change of heart had occurred for him to have changed so drastically?

Behind his weakening aura, he was the one who had faced dozens, even hundreds of dangers with the sword in his hand. Among the shining stars of the Empire, he was a star of the sword, who had made his own name glow brightly.

Yet now, he had even forsaken the name ‘Empire’.

Upon organizing her thoughts, Linne lifted her head at the heightened voice of Ulysses. In her line of sight was a man conversing with Ulysses.

From his attire alone, it was clear he was not one of those who bred demons in the Grand Arena. A somewhat familiar face.

“Ah!”

She remembered. He was ‘Idel’, the man who had come with her master, the Sword Saint Hayden Reich.

“When did he approach?”

Had she failed to notice because she was sorting out her thoughts? That might be part of it, but this man also seemed quite adept at concealing his presence.

“It’s been a long time, Your Highness Ulysses.”

“Yes, what was the name again?”

Although Ulysses showed a slight hint of joy at the familiar face,

“Do they know each other?”

While Ulysses harbored this doubt, others began to gather around them.

‘The shadows that followed before.’

She felt the murderous intent of three people directed solely at her and slowly placed her hand on her sword sheath.

“My name is Idel.”

“Idel! Yes, Idel Hyrans!”

A familiar family name. Where had she heard it before? Deep in thought, she eventually realized that the ‘Hyrans’ was one of the noble families of the Empire, which had faced a certain extremity.

This was dangerous.

“By the way, you were also thinking of seeking asylum in the Holy Nation…”

As that thought crossed her mind, Idel threw a punch at Ulysses’s abdomen.

Thud.

Ulysses collapsed helplessly with a dull sound.

“Your Highness!”

Chang!

She swiftly drew her sword and tried to close the distance with the man named Idel, but it was futile.

Two shadows that had sprung from the surroundings blocked her path.

“Move aside!”

Circulating mana throughout her body and transforming it into aura, she swung her sword at one of the men who blocked it with a dagger.

Clang!

Sparks flew as Linne’s sword clashed against the dagger, and the man blocking her was flung into the air.

The confusion was clear on the face of the man with the dagger. He had underestimated her, thinking she was just a young girl and a student of the Sword Saint.

Following his movements with her eyes, Linne struck at the man’s opening with her recovered sword.

“The aura is sharp.”

However, the attack did not succeed. The accompanying man covered for his comrade’s gap, swinging a curved sword in retaliation.

‘This is troublesome.’

Linne stepped back. While she felt she could win if it were one-on-one given each individual’s skills, there were two of them.

Even these coordinated movements seemed familiar to her.

“The prince will be taken to the ritual chamber, I’ll leave this place to you.”

After leaving these words behind, Idel picked up the collapsed Ulysses and headed towards the inner part of the arena.

“Stop right there!”

Linne swung her sword again to follow him, but once more, she was blocked by the two men.

“That’s far enough, heretic. Your prince is merely becoming a ‘true’ member of the Solar Religion through the ‘ritual.'”

“…A ritual?”

“Yes.”

Watching the men nod, Linne bit her lip hard.

In fact, these men were the Black Guards among the Seven Voices Order, the dirty workers of the Holy Nation sent by High Priest Garoth. They had not revealed their identities, but Linne had vaguely guessed it, seeing that their skills were nearly on par with hers.

She wasn’t sure what they were planning to do, but something was definitely going to happen to Ulysses.

She had to stop it. But how? It was uncertain whether she could defeat these two with her own strength.

Moreover, even if she did defeat them, the ‘ritual’ mentioned earlier might already be over.

‘Why now… Where is Sir Julian? No, this must have been planned.’

“Oh, I shouldn’t have left my post.”

But her complaint, and the anxiety that followed, turned into relief at the sound of a familiar voice.

“That’s right, it’s because you left your post!”

Linne spoke with a slightly venomous tone. She felt relieved that this man could solve anything, but she resented feeling that way.

“Where have you taken Prince Ulysses?”

Julian, who had appeared suddenly, was calm. It seemed he had grasped the situation just from bits of information.

“The man brought by the master took him. The location is…”

“Probably underground.”

“Are you sure?”

“Haha, not really. I’m just guessing.”

A joke at a time like this.

Annoyed, Linne was about to retort sharply, but when underground was mentioned, the two Black Guards flinched.

“Thanks to my joke, we seem to have found the location.”

Was it not just a joke? Extracting information through such craftiness in this situation was unbelievable.

“Then, let’s deal with these guys quickly and go to rescue His Highness…”

“Leave them to me, Sir Julian, please go to Prince Ulysses.”

Linne was quick in her judgment. By holding these two Black Guards here and sending Julian first, she believed he could resolve the situation.

“Are you sure? These are Black Guards, the special forces of the Holy Nation. You could die.”

“Anyway.”

She gripped the handle of her sword tightly.

“If something happens to His Highness, it’s the same as dying anyway.”

At Linne’s words, Julian chuckled briefly. Unlike his usual sneer, this laugh carried a bit more emotion.

“That’s true.”

With that, Julian kicked the ground. He bounced off a wall at an astonishing speed, trying to cross to the other side, but the Black Guards attempted to block him. However, Linne wouldn’t allow it.

“You’re dealing with me!”

She swung her aura-infused sword once, driving the Black Guards back and thereby enabling Julian to move.

***

The underground of the Grand Arena was home to an unbelievable number of demons and ‘Tri-horn Demons’. Knowing this made descending the circular staircase to the underground quite a challenge. The demonic energy that pricked at the skin confirmed the existence of Tri-horn Demons, as realized through the ‘Understanding of Demonic Essence’ moments ago.

‘The deeper we go, the denser it becomes.’

Why Ulysses was brought here was puzzling. Could it be that they were unaware of the Tri-horn Demons inhabiting this place? If so, it was akin to walking into death.

‘Ah, that’s it.’

As I descended further, my doubts began to clear. The intensely thick demonic energy, enough to chill to the bone, did not show any hostility, even as I approached. Julian, known as the ‘Demon Slayer’, had a scent that would be terribly unpleasant to demons.

Yet, the fact that these keenly scented creatures showed no aggression meant one thing:

‘This place… is a Venom Palace.’

A Venom Palace, where venomous creatures are confined to devour each other, enhancing their toxicity. Here, ‘toxicity’ referred to the demons’ demonic energy. It meant that this place was used to gather numerous demons, create immense demonic energy, and confine it through spells.

To achieve this, many demons had to be captured, but this place coincidentally gathered many demon corpses.

“It seems the demons and their corpses used in the arena are collected here.”

Finally arriving underground, I stepped on the squelching floor and spoke. The demonic essence enveloping my body would have been enough to make an ordinary person foam at the mouth and faint, but it hardly affected me. Instead, the obsessive cleanliness in me frowned at the floor dirtied with demon blood and mucus.

“Noticing without even looking around. You’re quite perceptive.”

Upon reaching the underground, Idel, the man who had previously visited the villa with the Sword Saint, spoke. Around him were two men who appeared to be priests, and Ulysses, who looked limp and unconscious, wearing a crown resembling a laurel wreath.

“Are you planning to cast a suggestion on Prince Ulysses?”

One of the sinister relics of the Holy Nation, ‘The Engraved Lie’ allows the use of top-tier shadow elemental magic, enabling mental magic.

“…How did you?”

“This relic is among the highest secrets of the Holy Nation…”

“There is a separate document recording this highest secret.”

As I spoke with a slight smile, a shade of ‘fear’ began to appear over the priests’ heads. I had long learned that showing such bravado could shake an enemy’s spirit. Moreover, it wasn’t even a lie. A ‘setting collection’ is a document, isn’t it?

‘Hmm.’

Unlike the two priests, the man named ‘Idel’ showed little interest in my words. Instead, unlike the other two, a distinct ‘anger’—or rather, a red hue close to ‘hatred’—was visible in his emotions.

Oh, Julian, what on earth have you done to even a citizen of another country… Well, let’s not talk about it.

“Don’t pay attention to his words. After all, what you have to do is already determined.”

At Idel’s words, the priests nodded and refocused on Ulysses, or more precisely, on the laurel crown on his head. The purple light imbued with demonic energy from the priests’ hands started to flicker, and it began to be absorbed into the laurel crown.

The relic ‘The Engraved Lie’ enables the use of high-level mental magic even without magical knowledge. However, it requires a significant amount of energy, whether mana or demonic energy, a substantial amount indeed. In this Venom Palace, where ‘demonic energy’ is so abundant that it saturates the air like a dense fog, it was clear that the mental magic would be executed without any major issues—if there were no problems, that is.

Sshhrk!

While observing the ritual, the sound of a sword being drawn from its sheath tickled my ears.

“Do not think about disrupting the ritual. If you refrain, at least your life will be spared.”

What a lie.

“To utter such words while brimming with the intent to kill. It seems you have thicker skin on your face than I do.”

“Not as thick as yours. But, as you say…”

I raised my hand to interrupt Idel’s speech. Although displeasure clouded his face, I was not particularly concerned and instead slipped my hand into my robe.

“I don’t know what I’ve done to you, but as a gesture of apology, let me offer you the beautiful sound of a bell.”

Saying this, I gave the ‘Bell of Night’, which I had acquired just earlier, a single shake.

Ting!

The small, subtle sound created gentle ripples like a droplet falling on a lake.

“…What are you scheming in this situation?”

“Isn’t it a pleasant sound?”

Idel’s eyes harbored suspicion at this inexplicable action. He seemed slightly tense, convinced I would not engage in meaningless actions, yet annoyed by the absurd act of ‘ringing a bell’.

“I’m always annoyed by your words. But, since today will be the last time, I might as well tolerate it…”

“What, what!?”

“Why is the demonic energy in the laurel crown…!?”

Idel was interrupted mid-sentence by the alarmed voices of the priests behind him and turned to look in that direction. The purple light that the relic, ‘The Engraved Lie’, had been holding was gradually fading.

“…Could it be, that bell you just rang is also a relic?”

“Noticing without even touching. You’re quite perceptive.”

I threw his earlier words back at him. Indeed, the reason ‘The Engraved Lie’s’ light disappeared is thanks to this relic, the ‘Bell of Night’. It’s a relic that allows the use of high-level ‘mental magic’ without the need for magical knowledge. However, it requires a large amount of ‘demonic energy’ to function.

“But, what if despite the gathered large amounts of demonic energy, it’s prevented from resonating, inhibiting its activity?”

The ‘demonic energy’ pervasive here merely becomes air that sours the mood. However, demons or humans undergoing demonization can still utilize ‘demonic energy’. Though the activity of the ‘demonic energy’ has quieted, its potency remains unchanged.

The ‘Bell of Night’ is an effective relic against non-living things, not living beings—a relic for relics. It’s useless in other situations but crucial for handling top-tier relics. Weak against the weak, and strong against the strong—it’s a relic of ‘relative strength’.

Screech.

A day passed, and the main gates of Landbard Academy swung open.

“Leader, I hope you stay safe for the next ten days. I wanted to go with you, but you refused…”

Aaron, standing next to Eugene, looked disheartened. The night before, he had asked Eugene for permission to accompany him, but Eugene had firmly declined.

“So, what are you going to do now?” Rohen asked, carrying a large bag as he exited the academy. He looked like a student who had been expelled.

“What’s with that bag?” Eugene asked, raising an eyebrow.

“This? These are the books we use in class.”

“Why are you bringing textbooks out?”

The books Rohen brought were for subjects like herbology and geography, all of which they studied in class. He had even packed the clothes provided by the academy. Anyone seeing him would think he had been expelled.

“I want to show my mother. To tell her what I’m learning.”

“Alright…”

Through their conversations, Eugene had learned that Rohen’s family consisted of only his mother, as his father had passed away on a monster-slaying mission. Rohen wanted to proudly share his academy experiences with his mother.

“Where are you headed?” Ken Pelven asked, curious about Eugene’s destination. Normally, students leaving the academy for a while would head to their family estates, but Eugene had mentioned going somewhere else first.

“I’ve got a place to be. See you later.” Eugene patted Rohen and Ken on their shoulders and quickly moved away.

‘First, I need to get to the nearest teleportation device.’

Teleportation devices, present in cities and territories, were often used by knights and nobles who couldn’t use teleportation magic themselves. However, they had a significant drawback: they were quite expensive to use, making them inaccessible to common folk.

‘But I have this.’

Eugene took out a small, square piece of wood from his pocket. This enchanted wooden token was proof of his status as a student of Landbard Academy. It bore the academy’s emblem and was magically imbued to verify the student’s identity.

‘With this token, I can use the teleportation device. And I can use it up to ten times for free.’

Thanks to this, Eugene could travel without much financial burden despite his limited funds.

“There it is.”

After running for a while, Eugene spotted the teleportation device in the distance, his eyes gleaming.

Huff.

“Whoa, you startled me!”

The guard stationed at the teleportation device was taken aback by Eugene’s sudden appearance. Not wanting to waste even a second, Eugene had used light-footed martial arts to get there swiftly.

“To the Seifran Territory of the Bevel Kingdom, please.” Eugene showed the guard his token and stated his destination.

***

Tinkle.

“Welcome.”

“I’d like a room.”

Upon arriving in the Seifran Territory of the Bevel Kingdom, Eugene immediately entered a modest inn.

“I need to drink the potion now.”

He wanted to consume the potion he had received as a reward from the academy just the day before.

Originally, Eugene had planned to drink the potion on the night he received it, when everyone was asleep. However, even when dawn arrived, his team members were still awake, chatting away. They were too excited about passing the test, achieving excellent scores, and receiving the potion. It wasn’t until nearly 3 AM that they finally fell asleep.

‘Damn them…’

Because of this, Eugene couldn’t drink the potion. Drinking the potion and then meditating to circulate its effects would take several hours, so he couldn’t drink it if he wanted to leave the academy early in the morning.

Rustle.

“I’ll take care of my own meals, so I’d like to rest quietly,” Eugene said.

“Very well,” the innkeeper replied with a hearty laugh, handing over the room key as Eugene gave him 3 silver coins.

“What? You had money?” came a voice from Eugene’s bag as he climbed the stairs. Taeje poked his head out, looking at Eugene.

“Where did you get it?”

“I’ve always had it.”

“You said you had no money! That’s why we traveled from home to the academy using light-footed martial arts.”

“Oh, that was a lie.”

“Eek!” Taeje scowled at Eugene’s deceit. If Eugene had the money, they could have taken a comfortable carriage instead of using light-footed martial arts, which left them dehydrated and sleepless.

“I didn’t have much,” Eugene tried to explain.

“Enough!” Taeje turned away with a sulky expression. How could Eugene do this to him? Taeje had asked for some meat on the journey, but Eugene claimed he had no money and gave him only jerky.

“I’ll buy you a whole cow. Don’t be mad.”

Creak.

Eugene opened the door, trying to placate the sulking Taeje. How could a divine beast get upset so easily?

“Really…?”

“Yes, really.”

“Hmph… alright. I, Taeje, will magnanimously forgive you,” Taeje said, smiling as he leaped onto the bed.

Plop.

Shuffling sounds followed.

“Oh, are you going to drink it now?” Taeje showed interest as Eugene sat on the bed and took out the potion from his bag.

“Yes. Keep guard for me. Not that anyone will come into the room anyway.”

“Alright.”

Pop!

When Eugene opened the potion bottle, a cheerful sound accompanied by a sweet aroma tickled his nose.

“It smells sweet.”

“Indeed.”

“It’s a far cry from the so-called elixir you made earlier,” Taeje commented.

Eugene had no retort. Taeje was right. Compared to the potion before him, the elixir Eugene had made was like night and day.

Gulp, gulp.

“Hah…”

The sweet potion slid smoothly down Eugene’s throat.

“Let’s see how it works.”

Eugene got off the bed, sat cross-legged on the floor, and closed his eyes.

“Huu…”

A hum filled the air.

Eugene exhaled once and began to focus on the energy surging within his body.

‘This is incredible.’

Despite his body trembling, Eugene calmly managed the surging energy, marveling at the potion’s power. He hadn’t expected much, but the energy contained in the potion exceeded his expectations. The energy from the potion merged with the energy in his lower dantian, creating even greater movement, and this combined energy began to intensify.

‘First, the lower dantian.’

Eugene moved the energy to his lower dantian, the Stone Gate acupoint. He needed to expand the lower dantian to its maximum size with the energy currently in his body.

Crack.

‘Ugh…’

As his lower dantian broke, intense pain overwhelmed Eugene’s body. However, if he moved in this state, he would immediately fall into deviation. Eugene endured the pain with immense concentration and patience, gradually restoring his shattered lower dantian.

Normally, a dantian doesn’t grow like this. It naturally expands and enlarges as internal energy accumulates. But Eugene didn’t have that time, so he shattered his lower dantian.

Saaaa.

“Good. The lower dantian expansion is complete.”

As the lower dantian was reconstructed into a larger size, a refreshing sensation penetrated through Eugene’s lower back.

“Now for the middle dantian…”

Without a moment’s rest after remaking the lower dantian, Eugene immediately began moving the remaining energy.

‘I need to stay focused.’

Eugene directed the surging energy towards the middle dantian, the Jade Hall acupoint, steeling himself with resolve.

‘To create the middle dantian, I need to start with the Severed Meridian.’

He had to heal the Three Yin Severed Meridian, a congenital condition he was born with. Of course, he couldn’t clear all the blocked meridians right now. However, he could unblock the meridian leading to the middle dantian.

‘Now…’

Crunch.

Eugene took a deep breath and broke through the Zhongting acupoint at his solar plexus, which had been blocked. The sound was dull and deep. Breaking the lower dantian sounded like shattering glass, but unblocking the meridian sounded like breaking wood. And simultaneously,

‘Krrrrgh.’

Eugene suppressed an unbearable scream, enduring immense pain.

Rumble.

As the blocked meridian opened, the energy surged wildly.

“What… what’s happening?” Taeje was startled to see Eugene’s body shaking violently and sprang up in alarm.

‘This is just the beginning…’

Eugene endured the extreme pain, controlling the energy one by one while maintaining even breathing. With two meridians still blocked, his internal energy circulation was incomplete, making it even harder to control the energy.

Eight hours later,

Saaaaa.

A thick mist filled the room. Interestingly, despite a gap under the door, the mist didn’t escape and stayed within the room.

Finally,

Swoosh!

As Eugene opened his eyes, the mist filling the room was drawn into his nostrils. The mist was, in fact, Eugene’s internal energy.

Shuffle.

Eugene repeatedly clenched and unclenched his fists, checking his body’s condition.

“How did it go?”

Taeje, who had fallen asleep on the bed, woke up at the noise and approached Eugene.

“I need to test it out.”

With a smile at Taeje’s words, Eugene opened the door and moved to the forest behind the inn.

Srrrng.

Arriving at the forest, Eugene drew the longsword he had brought from the academy.

“Now, let’s see…”

Crack.

Swish!

“Huh?!”

Taeje’s eyes widened as he watched Eugene’s actions.

“Could it be… you’ve reached the peak level?!”

Hummm.

Eugene smiled in response to Taeje’s question, seeing the aura around the longsword. It wasn’t the crude aura he had forcefully created before but a sharply refined aura enveloping the longsword.

“You crazy bastard…” Taeje shook his head as he observed Eugene’s progress. Despite having just reached 5-star status, Eugene had already ascended to the peak level, a feat that typically took a sixty-year cycle.

“Time to stretch a bit,” Eugene said.

Swish!

Eugene gracefully wielded his sword, slicing through falling leaves around him. Until now, he hadn’t been able to fully infuse his movements with energy due to insufficient internal power. Footwork, essential for executing sword techniques, required precise energy infusion in every step to be perfect. Due to his previously limited internal power, he hadn’t been able to use the advanced footwork techniques of higher martial arts.

Swish! Swish, swish.

Eugene moved smoothly, like a fish in water. Although he still felt some limitations, he found it relatively easy to move.

“Third Form of the Heaven’s Killing Sword Technique: Ghost Slash.”

Slash.

Swish, swish, swish.

For about ten minutes, Eugene had been slicing leaves when he suddenly executed the third form of his Heaven’s Killing Sword Technique. Numerous sword energies appeared before him, extending in all directions.

Boom.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud.

Eugene’s sword energy cut through seven densely grown trees in all directions before gradually dissipating.

“Only seven trees…” Eugene clicked his tongue in disappointment as he sheathed his sword. Although this was already a highly satisfactory achievement, he couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed.

“You’re being ungrateful,” Taeje, who had been quietly watching, chuckled. For a typical martial artist, accumulating internal power equivalent to a sixty-year cycle would take a lifetime, but Eugene had achieved it in just a couple of months.

“I wish I had my own sword…” Eugene felt the long sword used by knights was uncomfortable.

“I need to gather ingredients for an elixir and look for a sword,” Eugene said, placing Taeje on his shoulder and heading back to the inn.

Strike 146

Prev I TOC I Next

Hyun-soo’s first time wielding a hammer with his right hand in four years.

He thought it would feel awkward, but it was as if he had been using it every day.

He understood why.

‘They say Ares is often used for therapeutic purposes.’

Hyun-soo was a special case in Ares, receiving no system corrections.

This experience in Ares kept his skills from rusting.

‘No, they actually improved.’

Hyun-soo finally took control of the forge.

He needed to create a total of seven blades for the Chiljido.

One central blade and six branches to represent.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

The cheerful sound of forging filled the air.

Hyun-soo’s hand, holding the tongs, continuously moved without rest.

The workshop fell silent for a moment.

Jin-seop and Ji-hye quietly watched him.

Jin-seop chuckled to himself.

As a doctor, he had seen countless surgeries performed by renowned surgeons.

Sometimes bold, sometimes cautious, and sometimes more precise than anyone else, always filled with confidence.

‘This is the real Hyun-soo…’

The Hyun-soo he had only heard about.

And Ji-hye, the nurse who secretly admired Hyun-soo.

She watched Hyun-soo, who was immersed in his work wearing a black t-shirt, and her cheeks flushed.

‘Is this the Hyun-soo I know?’

He was the one who looked like he was receiving a death sentence every time hospital bills were mentioned.

In the hospital, he always looked defeated, like the whole world was collapsing around him, but inside the forge, he was a completely different person.

Overflowing with confidence, his expression clearly showed, ‘I am the best in this field.’

Additionally,

Two members of the filming crew, sent by Ian.

Having worked at the same station as Ian, they had once seen Hyun-soo collapse and remarked,

“Ho-beom, you said you’d never work in broadcasting again, why are you editing for such a person?”

At first, they thought it was out of pity.

But now, it was different.

They watched Hyun-soo through the lens, capturing only his presence in the forge.

Zzzrrr—

The filming crew felt chills down their spines.

‘At his age…?’

‘This is absolutely a national treasure.’

Tall and handsome, his intense focus even as sweat dripped down his face stirred even the men in the filming crew.

‘This is going to be huge…’

Is it an occupational hazard?

They always related everything to viewership ratings.

Knowing about the current blacksmith trend, they had asked Ho-beom when this video would be released.

‘This is going to be the video of the year.’

‘How far will Hyun-soo rise with this video?’

The two anticipated.

And the work continued day and night.

People took turns sleeping in cars or at a temporary residence.

Then, one person who had gone to the residence came back.

It was Director Park.

Standing next to Jin-su, Director Park observed him.

‘How many hours has it been?’

His initial thought when he first saw him,

What could this young guy possibly achieve?

But his opinion was changing.

He had been the top historian in the country.

And also a professor of history at Korea University, the best university in the country.

He had also worked as a top appraiser.

Soon, the blade was nearing completion.

A prominent central blade with six beautifully arranged branches.

‘It’s real…’

Director Park was amazed.

After countless tempering and forging, Hyun-soo began the process of engraving the Chiljido with characters.

‘Geumsanggam technique…’

The Chiljido had golden characters engraved on it.

Using a chisel, he carved the characters to insert gold thread—a highly difficult technique with a joyful meaning.

‘Proof of the Korean Peninsula.’

It was a technique used to demonstrate that Baekje on the Korean Peninsula was the first to realize the Geumsanggam technique.

Before long, the gold thread began to fit into the characters, and hours later, Hyun-soo spoke.

“It’s completed.”

The filming crew hurriedly approached to capture the completed Chiljido up close.

‘Beautiful…’

Even those unfamiliar with blacksmithing could immediately recognize the quality of the craftsmanship.

And from a step away, Director Park also moved forward as everyone’s eyes turned to him.

Suddenly, wearing pristine white cotton gloves, he intently observed the Chiljido.

Hyun-soo felt nervous because he knew that Director Park was the country’s top appraiser.

Soon after, Director Park spoke, “It’s a perfect reproduction, no other words come to mind.”

Hyun-soo finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Hyun-soo then received the Chiljido back, and Ho-beom said, “Now it’s time for Blacksmith Hyun’s interview.”

The interview began shortly after.

***

Ho-beom’s heart swelled as he recorded Hyun-soo’s interview.

The first video production for him went beyond satisfaction, truly impressing Ho-beom.

‘Wow, to think he actually reproduced the real Chiljido.’

What are the limits of Hyun-soo’s potential?

Suddenly, he felt truly fortunate to be working with this person.

‘There’s something slightly disappointing, though.’

But Ho-beom licked his lips.

The masterpiece was created; now it just needed to be highlighted.

Of course, Hyun-soo had agreed to be interviewed by a staff member from the National Museum.

And this was conditional.

If the staff member was satisfied, they would agree to the interview.

“Ahem.”

Seeing him clear his throat, it seemed he more than met the condition.

But here was the issue.

‘The public will just think some government employee is doing the interview.’

Do we really care when a National Museum staff member is interviewed on TV?

No, we just think it’s one of the staff, maybe explaining how great the artifact is.

That’s why it was disappointing.

‘If only it were an interview with a more influential figure…’

Then the filming crew said, “All done. Let’s get the staff member’s interview and wrap up.”

Soon, Jin-su adjusted his tie.

Then, an unexpected figure stepped forward.

“I’ll do the interview.”

“…?”

Ho-beom looked surprised.

The one who stepped forward was none other than Director Park.

Ho-beom knew who Director Park was.

‘That man is quite well-known internationally.’

Of course, ordinary people, no matter how famous, generally don’t know much about appraisers.

But what if it was someone who had appeared on the show ‘Real or Fake!’?

During his time as a professor, Director Park had appeared on that program and had become quite familiar to the public.

“Director Park?”

Jin-su was taken aback.

Hyun-soo was also puzzled.

Director Park looked at Hyun-soo while making sure the camera wasn’t rolling yet.

Four years ago.

‘You mean the state can’t support him! What are you talking about, Kang Hyun-tae is one of the few remaining blacksmiths in the world! If not the state, then who will protect him!’

Unknown to anyone, Director Park had been the one who argued most vehemently in the parliament office for Hyun-tae’s medical expenses.

It’s also true that he was surrounded by prejudice for being just a young person and had underestimated Hyun-soo.

There was a clear reason he majored in history and became the director of the National Museum.

Because he loved history.

“Giving such a gift to someone who perfectly reproduced Baekje’s Chiljido is the least I can do.”

Director Park smiled slightly.

Then the interview started.

“This Baekje’s Chiljido is…”

Watching the interview unfold, Ho-beom was impressed.

‘So different from someone seasoned in broadcasting!’

He knew how to highlight the story.

“As you can see, this Chiljido was made using traditional techniques and is a true reproduction of the original Chiljido to the extent that it’s a masterpiece.”

He deliberately made the filming crew ask leading questions.

“I see, then what do you think about the creator?”

Director Park smiled slightly.

“I consider him a master craftsman, unique not only in our country but in the world. As someone who has appraised hundreds of artifacts…”

Ho-beom was amazed.

‘This is going to be huge, a real blockbuster!’

Hyun-soo had created a legendary piece above all legends.

And Ho-beom was confident this video would be his masterpiece.

Hyun-soo’s personal story.

The trauma he experienced during the creation process.

His overcoming it.

The perfectly reproduced Chiljido.

And finally, the compelling words of Director Park.

Gulp-

‘How many views will this get? 20 million? 30 million?’

Ho-beom thought it would reach that since not only people from Korea but also from around the world would be watching.

However, his prediction was completely off.

At that time, he did not know that it would record several times the number of views he had anticipated.

***

The shooting had ended.

The National Museum had to report to the higher-ups and appraise its value.

“The price will be assessed and transferred soon.”

Hyun-soo responded with a small smile.

“I will donate the Chiljido. And as promised, could you display it after my video is uploaded?”

Donating such a valuable Chiljido for free?

It was very good news for the National Museum.

Also, judging from Hyun-soo’s words, it seemed possible to arrange an exhibition in a few months, which the National Museum could certainly accommodate.

Soon, everyone left and Ho-beom asked,

“Even though it would be worth a considerable amount, you chose to donate it. That’s very generous of you.”

Hyun-soo smirked.

And Ho-beom thought that if the Chiljido had been made in Ares, it would have been valued even more than in reality.

It’s truly ironic.

That something’s worth more in a virtual world.

Then Hyun-soo said with a subtle expression,

“Probably, it will come back even more valuable.”

Ho-beom couldn’t understand his words.

After finishing the shoot, Hyun-soo returned to Seoul to visit his father.

Hyun-soo comes to the hospital every week to tell his father about what has happened.

Jin-seop said that even though Hyun-tae was in a vegetative state, he could hear everything.

Of course, that might just be a comforting thought.

“…I think we can get more people interested in our work, our dream we talked about. Of course, thanks to the virtual reality Ares. The Chiljido I donated will be the start.”

Hyun-soo smiled gently.

***

A few months later.

The National Museum.

Recently, the National Museum has been bustling with visitors.

After the crowd died down a bit, the children from Bright Kindergarten came for a field trip.

The kids, who were thinking of amusement parks or zoos, were disappointed to hear it was a museum.

Six-year-old Su-hyeon was no different.

Wearing a bee-like yellow outfit, Su-hyeon just wanted to quickly watch cartoons on a smartphone.

Then, the guide spoke.

“This replica is the currently popular Baekje’s Chiljido. During the Three Kingdoms period, King Geunchogo of Baekje…”

Behind the boring explanation, when the phrase “currently popular” was mentioned, Su-hyeon slowly raised her head.

Then, Su-hyeon was utterly amazed.

A mystical sword, reminiscent of beautiful branches, lay before her.

“Wow…”

“Awesome.”

“This sword looks really unique.”

“This Chiljido was crafted and donated by artisan Kang Hyun-soo, and recently in Ares…”

Su-hyeon was mesmerized by the sword.

She had only heard about such things and seen them in books.

Most of them were rusty and old.

But this was different.

It was so cool that Su-hyeon, captivated, asked,

“Teacher, if I learn, could I make a sword like that?”

Hyun-soo alone cannot change the world.

However, the lives of a few people were definitely changing.

*Ding dong!*

At the sound of the doorbell, Kim Hyun-mi, who was cooking with Jae-seong, ran to the intercom.

“Yes? Who is it?”

“Hello, we’re from the Yangju Police Station. Is this the residence of Lee Kyu-seong?”

“The police?”

Surprised by the sudden visit, Kim Hyun-mi was flustered. Jae-seong got up and opened the door.

“Hello.”

“Yes. My brother is Lee Kyu-seong. What’s this about?”

“Oh! We’re here regarding an award and a reward. Have you heard anything about this from him?”

“A commendation?”

Jae-seong, looking confused as if hearing it for the first time, glanced at his mother. Kim Hyun-mi also tilted her head, indicating this was news to her.

“What did my son do?”

“…So, you haven’t heard anything about it?”

The visiting policeman seemed even more perplexed.

“Please come inside.”

As Kim Hyun-mi gestured, the police officer entered. Following her lead, he sat at the living room table.

“You might be surprised if you haven’t heard about it from your son.”

“He didn’t commit a crime, did he?”

“Oh no, don’t worry. Quite the opposite. He did something remarkable, which is why I’m here.”

The policeman took out his phone and showed them the screen.

“Do you see this? This is what your son did.”

“Huh?”

Kim Hyun-mi and Jae-seong leaned in close to the screen. It displayed an internet article.

**- Dungeon Break in Downtown Seoul! Heroic Actions of a Level 1 Awakened?**

Scrolling down, the article mentioned Kyu-seong’s name and how he prevented a sudden disaster. However, due to lack of information, the article ended with several questions.

**- How did a mere Level 1 Awakened stop a fourth class monster?**

└ It wasn’t just a fourth class, but a herd of horned beasts. Only a fifth class Awakened could handle that.

└ Wow, isn’t that even more impressive?

– Another Awakened guild doing PR? Which guild is he from?

└ Didn’t you read? The article says he’s unaffiliated. If it was PR, the guild would be making a huge fuss.**

After skimming the comments, Jae-seong looked up. His eyes met the police officer’s, who was observing his reaction.

“There are many stories we want to hear.”

“…What stories?”

“For instance, is he really unaffiliated? And is he truly a Level 1 Awakened? We’ve tried contacting him but couldn’t reach him. Do you know where he is?”

“Well, I don’t really know what my brother has been up to these days.”

Half-lying, Jae-seong genuinely had nothing to say. He knew Kyu-seong’s abilities, but so did the police. Upon registering as an Awakened, one’s abilities and names are documented, making it impossible not to know.

“According to eyewitnesses, Kyu-seong shot something like a beam from his hands…”

“I wouldn’t know.”

*Ding dong!*

The doorbell rang again.

Feeling there were too many visitors, Kim Hyun-mi got up to check.

“Hello. We’re from the Awakened Guild, Ara Hongryeon. Is this Lee Kyu-seong’s house?”

“Yes, it is. Just a moment.”

As Kim Hyun-mi opened the door, the police officer frowned upon hearing the name Ara Hongryeon. The government recruits Awakened individuals, but most join private guilds. The government was eager to recruit Awakened individuals.

“Hello.”

“Oh my, a pretty young lady! I think I’ve seen you on TV…”

“Thank you for the compliment. I’m Jeong So-yeon, the leader of Team 1 at Ara Hongryeon Guild.”

“I’m Lee Hae-sol, deputy leader of Team 2.”

The unassuming Lee Hae-sol appeared from behind Jeong So-yeon and greeted them.

“Hello. What brings you to our house?”

“We have a contract for Mr. Kyu-seong. Is he home by any chance?”

“A contract? Oh, Kyu-seong isn’t home right now…”

At that moment, Lee Hae-sol noticed the police officer sitting in the living room. His narrowed eyes scrutinized the officer.

‘Ugh, Jeong So-yeon and Lee Hae-sol?’

The police officer felt the situation had worsened. His superiors had instructed him to recruit Kyu-seong if possible, but this competition was unbeatable.

‘So the rumors about Ara Hongryeon being connected were true.’

The fact that both the leader of Team 1 and the deputy leader of Team 2 had come in person showed that something unprecedented was happening right before his eyes.

“We have guests already.”

Lee Hae-sol, who had been observing the situation, struck first.

“Oh, they just arrived as well. The police officer said he’s here about a commendation and a reward.”

Kim Hyun-mi spoke with a delighted expression. Not fully aware of Ara Hongryeon’s prestige, the idea of a police officer personally coming to their home to deliver a commendation was more impressive to her.

“Which department are you from?”

“An Awakened Guild member seems very interested in a public official.”

“He could be a scammer.”

Lee Hae-sol spoke leisurely, his eyes gleaming.

Under the piercing gaze that seemed to scrutinize everything, the police officer cleared his throat and took out his ID.

“I’m Sergeant Park Hyun-woo from Gangnam District Office.”

“Gangnam District Office?”

Since he initially claimed to be from the Yangju Police Station, Kim Hyun-mi tilted her head in confusion. Realizing his mistake, Park Hyun-woo hurriedly continued.

“I stopped by the Yangju Police Station on my way here.”

“…”

The awkward excuse made the atmosphere tense. Sensing this, Lee Hae-sol, like a snake finding its prey, sharply interjected.

“Ah, Sergeant Park Hyun-woo… Or rather, isn’t it Lieutenant Park Hyun-woo?”

“?!”

Park Hyun-woo looked at Lee Hae-sol in surprise.

“It’s not like you could confuse your rank… Lieutenant is higher and better, isn’t it? Why lower yourself?”

“Huh?!”

Park Hyun-woo was startled. He never imagined that Lee Hae-sol would know who he was. It’s not normal for an average person to know personal information about police officers.

“Ahem!”

Awkwardly coughing, Park Hyun-woo subtly rose from his seat. He then bowed to Kim Hyun-mi and Lee Jae-seong.

“Uh, I must leave now. I’ll personally deliver the commendation and reward to Lee Kyu-seong. When he returns, please have him contact the Yangju Police Station.”

Park Hyun-woo quickly spewed out the words and left in a hurry.

Seeing his suspicious and awkward departure, Kim Hyun-mi muttered.

“Was he really a scammer?”

“No, Mother. He was a real police officer.”

Lee Hae-sol said with a cold smile.

Kim Hyun-mi, even more confused by the response, tilted her head.

“Then why did he…?”

“Mr. Kyu-seong’s stock is very high right now. But since there’s no confirmed information, they came to test the waters. If they had solid information, the police chief would have come personally.”

Jeong So-yeon interjected.

However, Kim Hyun-mi couldn’t understand the words of the two Ara Hongryeon guild members.

“My son?”

“Yes! It may seem quiet, but there’s a fierce information war happening behind the scenes, all thanks to Mr. Kyu-seong.”

“Team Leader.”

Lee Hae-sol quietly called Jeong So-yeon, indicating she had gone too far. Realizing she got too excited about the topic related to Kyu-seong, Jeong So-yeon awkwardly smiled it off.

“Are you saying my brother is receiving recruitment offers from everywhere?”

“Very soon. For now, they’re just watching each other, but they’ll start making moves soon, like the police officer who just came.”

“What exactly happened…?”

Lee Jae-seong, who wasn’t very interested in Awakened matters, and Kim Hyun-mi, who knew little, were puzzled.

They didn’t understand the significance of Kyu-seong stopping a dungeon break.

“Thanks to Mr. Kyu-seong’s efforts in the dungeon break, hundreds of lives were saved. Among them were people I consider like siblings.”

“Hundreds of people?!”

“In simple terms, he prevented a natural disaster.”

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Kim Hyun-mi couldn’t continue and covered her mouth with her hand.

“We’ll leave the contract here. It was nice meeting Mr. Kyu-seong’s family.”

“A contract…?”

“It’s a contract to join Ara Hongryeon. Even for us, it’s not easy to recruit Mr. Kyu-seong. We’ll leave the contract for now, and it’s up to him whether to sign it or not.”

Jeong So-yeon spoke with a bitter smile, leaving Jae-seong speechless. Even someone unfamiliar with Awakened matters like him knew about the mighty Ara Hongryeon Guild, indicating that Kyu-seong was considering his options.

“Are you saying my brother is contemplating joining Ara Hongryeon?”

“Not exactly that he’s considering it…”

Jeong So-yeon gave an ambiguous smile, sensing the negative connotation. The more she reacted this way, the more bewildered Jae-seong became.

‘Wasn’t he just farming? What did he do to attract so much attention from these people…?’

Thinking that far, Jae-seong suddenly recalled the extraordinary ingredients Kyu-seong had brought home…

As if on cue, Kim Hyun-mi also had a similar thought.

“Have you all eaten?”

“Excuse me? Oh, we haven’t yet, but that’s alright.”

“No, it’s just that we’re experimenting with some cooking right now, and we have some leftover food.”

“Cooking experiments?”

Jeong So-yeon immediately thought of Kyu-seong’s produce, while Lee Hae-sol tried to hide his discomfort, suspecting they were just looking to offload surplus food.

“Well, can we try it?”

“Team Leader?”

Lee Hae-sol called out to Jeong So-yeon with eyes full of confusion. However, Jeong So-yeon’s spirit seemed long gone.

“Haha. This is perfect. We felt it would be a shame to eat it all by ourselves. Good food should be shared.”

“By any chance, are these the ingredients that Mr. Kyu-seong brought?”

“Oh my! You knew? Yes, we’re experimenting with the carrots, potatoes, and sweet potatoes Kyu-seong brought recently.”

“Please let us try them!”

Lee Hae-sol felt that the team leader had finally lost her mind. Here they were, supposed to be recruiting a valuable asset, yet they were eating a meal without even meeting the person.

In the end, Lee Hae-sol pressed down on Jeong So-yeon’s shoulder and called out to her.

“Team Leader?”

“Oh! Deputy Team Leader Lee, you should try it too. You’ll be surprised.”

“Haha, it feels awkward to say it myself, but I’m confident in the taste. Please, have a taste before you go.”

Glaring at the oblivious Jeong So-yeon, Lee Hae-sol gave up. Seeing the look in Jeong So-yeon’s eyes, it was clear her mind was elsewhere.

“Please, don’t feel burdened.”

As Jae-seong joined in, Lee Hae-sol secretly sighed and bowed his head.

“Thank you for the meal.”

Lee Hae-sol, who never expected the work-focused Jeong So-yeon to act so spontaneously, resolved to have a word with her once they returned. He then sat at the table.

And then…

“Whoa…!”

For the first time in his life, he tasted heaven.

* * *

“Whew! Finally back.”

After a long expedition to the Dungeon of Gluttony, I finally returned. Although the journey took longer than expected, my body was fine, but my mind…

“I got some real healing done.”

My mind was much clearer. In fact, I wished I could have stayed longer. But reality wasn’t so forgiving. There were pending tasks and things I had to handle personally, so I enjoyed myself moderately before coming back.

‘On the way back, I discovered a hot spring and a lake.’

This made the return journey longer. I never imagined a hot spring would exist in a dungeon. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I could only briefly check the hot spring’s water before leaving. Next time, I might head straight to the hot spring as soon as I enter the dungeon.

I checked on Ara, who was sleeping on my back, and then headed to the field.

“Guys, we’re back.”

The slimes, busy with their work, sluggishly approached me upon hearing my voice. Smiling at them, I introduced the newcomers.

“Here are the Rookies.”

I spent a total of five days in the dungeon. During those five days, I created four slimes, leaving two at the fairy village and bringing the other two with me. The slimes warmly welcomed the new members.

“So, how have things been?”

Having left home for five days, I wondered what changes might have occurred. The Rookies seemed eager to inform me of something.

“Oh? Could it be?”

With Ara still on my back, I ran to the storage room and saw the piles of green and purple. The long-awaited new crops.

Eggplants and cucumbers.

Act 93

Prev I TOC I Next

In the Holy Kingdom of Fernand, one of the twelve High Priests, Garoth, looked puzzled and turned towards the source of the noise.

“Met with the Sword Saint?”

It was quite an intriguing current issue. ‘Julian’ might not be as famous as in the Empire, but he was quite well-known here in the Holy Kingdom, albeit mostly for his notorious reputation.

Moreover, Garoth had some understanding of why he was so obsessed with the person known as the ‘Sword Saint.’

“How did it turn out? Both of them… I wouldn’t know if it’s greed, but I wish at least one of them ended up incapacitated.”

Garoth, unbecomingly for a High Priest, smirked maliciously.

“Unfortunately, it seems that neither side sustained serious injuries.”

Garoth displayed a hint of disappointment upon hearing the report from Heukwi (the Pretender) but also sighed in relief.

The Sword Saint, originally from the Empire, held a lofty reputation known throughout the continent.

Moreover, no one who simply matched him in swordsmanship had ever beaten him. What if it became known that the Sword Saint had been defeated by his own disciple? The prestigious name ‘Sword Saint’ would have been dulled, and a new formidable figure would have emerged in the Empire.

“How did the other High Priests react to their clash?”

“Lord Jeoncheonjureok and Lady Shalana did express some doubts.”

Jeoncheonjureok (the All-Heaven Force). At the mention of that name, Garoth frowned slightly.

The atmosphere turned colder, and Heukwi bowed slightly, adding respectfully,

“Still, it seems there will be no major movements yet.”

“Indeed, that gentleman is only interested in the Sword Saint’s solitary battle, so that would be the expected response. As for Shalana… she might have her reservations about it, but it’s unlikely she’ll be moved easily.”

Heukwi nodded as if agreeing, and suddenly a troubled expression appeared on Garoth’s face.

Time was running out.

Now that the baptism ceremony had ended, there was no longer any pretext for holding Ulysses in the Holy Kingdom.

At this critical moment, when brainwashing was absolutely necessary, no method could be ruled out.

‘The policy of reconciliation with the Empire’ had helped me rise to the position of High Priest.’

But there must always be a contingency plan.

Garoth was well aware of this.

Now, he had no choice but to adopt a hard-line approach.

***

It was clear that obtaining the sacred relics was important, but one thing had been overlooked.

“Well then, shall we start preparing to head back?”

Why the rush from the crack of dawn?

Although it was superficial, wasn’t the reason I came here ‘to escort Ulysses’?

And just like that, I couldn’t just suggest going to the arena.

“The carriage is ready.”

“As expected, Sir Julian. I really like how prompt you are.”

As Ulysses boarded the carriage, the journey back to the Empire officially began.

…How should I bring it up? Should I say I have business at the arena? Even if ‘Julian’ is shameless, there needs to be a reason and justification.

“Uh… Sir Julian, that building over there in the distance, what is it used for?”

Amidst this, Ulysses pointed to the place I wanted to go.

“That’s the arena. It’s one of the cultural facilities in Artea, the capital of the Holy Kingdom.”

“Indeed, Sir Julian. You’re not just excellent in swordsmanship?”

“As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been here.”

I chuckled briefly and took another look at Ulysses’s face.

His eyes sparkled with curiosity as he peered through the carriage window at the ‘arena.’

If there’s an opening and you don’t strike, you’re no swordsman.

“Would you like to visit?”

“Huh?”

“While we do have arenas in our empire, none are as grand as this one. In the holy city of Artea, the arena is considered the top cultural facility.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, and there’s one thing that’s different from our empire.”

‘Arenas are all the same, aren’t they?’ Ulysses said, to which I added,

“There’s something called ‘Matu’ here where gladiators fight demons.”

“Oh…”

Curiosity quickly turned into interest.

Right, got your interest?

Want to check it out?

“Ah, but there’s no reason for someone as noble as Prince Ulysses to visit such a vile place. I apologize. I shouldn’t have mentioned it.”

I know that pushing too hard here would make my motives too obvious.

Stepping back like this should help pique his interest.

“No, I’ve become interested in this ‘vile behavior’! I’d like to see it, is that okay?”

“Even so, a place fit for a prince of a nation to visit is…”

“No, I want to go. I want to see it!”

If he insists that much, I’ll take him. Hmph.

“Miss Linne, since the prince wishes it, we are going to briefly visit the arena. Would that be alright?”

The courteous ‘Julian’ also asked Linne for her opinion, but no reply came.

“Miss Linne?”

“Yes, yes? Ah!”

Startled, she nearly let go of the reins but managed to grab them in a flurry.

“You are deep in thought. You might not even feel it if you fell off the horse.”

“That’s unnecessary meddling.”

At my words, Linne frowned slightly.

“You are not maintaining the proper demeanor of an escort. Did you hear what the prince said?”

“…Uh.”

She muttered something akin to a groan and hung her head low.

“I’m sorry. What did you say?”

“His Highness the Prince said he would like to visit the arena before returning to the kingdom.”

At my words, she simply nodded.

The disdain she had shown towards the arena when we first arrived was nowhere to be seen now.

“Then we shall head to the arena.”

Saying that, I rode the horse back to the carriage where Ulysses was.

‘She seems downhearted.’

Otherwise, it wouldn’t fit the character of ‘Linne’ at all.

Although irritable, her genuine admiration for the ‘Sword Saint’ is real.

Such a ‘Sword Saint’ is now engaging in strange actions that would tarnish all his achievements, making it hard for her to accept.

‘It’s tough for me, imagine what it’s like for someone involved.’

What if it were the ‘me’ from the past?

The protagonist of <Let’s Kill the Demon Lord>, the Sword Saint, has sought asylum in the Holy Kingdom.

At the same time, ‘demonization’ is progressing, and he’s ignoring an important event, the ‘Black Knight’!

How would I feel if I heard such news?

‘Uh…’

Thinking about it now, the result is somewhat like the current ‘me.’

With that thought, I felt like encouraging Linne.

Hang in there.

But don’t, like someone, send a lengthy letter or a notification to delete the game to the game developers.

Then you’d end up like me.

***

Artea’s famous attraction, the myriad-kind arena, seemed to pique Ulysses’s curiosity immensely as he looked around everywhere.

From the arena itself to the spectator stands and even the VIP rooms, and the cages where demons for the matches were kept.

“There really are demons in the arena… Hey, is there a way to raise these demons?”

Among other things, Ulysses showed interest in the demons stationed at the arena. He approached someone who looked like a keeper and began to inquire about their environment and what they eat.

Watching Ulysses, I thought, ‘It wouldn’t hurt to leave him for a moment.’

It’ll just be for a short while, I can leave his guard to Linne during that time.

“Just a moment, I will entrust the prince’s guard to you, Linne.”

“What?”

“I have personal business to attend to.”

“Is your business so urgent that you would neglect your escort duties?”

Of course. I need to retrieve a sacred object. But I can’t say that honestly, so I decided to be vague.

“It’s a physiological need.”

“Ah…”

Linne seemed to accept this explanation and nodded. Then, I moved on towards my destination.

I arrived at a warehouse where the items of the Grand Arena are stored.

Heading towards ‘Warehouse 8’, a gaunt man holding a clipboard looked at me.

“Huh? Who are you?”

He’s not a noble or a priest of the Holy Kingdom, just someone who works at the Grand Arena. The man’s name is Kusat, the ‘Type 8’ manager. I remember his name because I’ve been here so often.

His job involves managing lost and found items and objects that have been left unclaimed past their rental period at the arena.

“I’ve come to look for something I forgot.”

“Forgot something? What did you forget?”

“Stupidly enough, I’ve even forgotten what it was.”

It sounded like a pointless remark, but it was actually a ‘keyword’.

When the protagonist, the Sword Saint, learned about the existence of the ‘Justice Bell’ sacred object and came to this place, this is something he could say from the choices available.

“Hmm… then, it seems you’ll have to live having forgotten it.”

“I’m sorry, but since it’s a valuable object, may I please have a look inside the Type 8 storage?”

Kusat frowned at the request to check inside the storage he managed.

“I kindly ask for your permission.”

Then, I placed a small pouch on top of his clipboard.

It contained 100 nars worth of gold coins. It’s a method I could never imagine using in my original country.

Giving a bribe is truly a dangerous act, especially since I don’t know what amount of bribe is usually effective.

There’s no guarantee that it will definitely succeed, and if caught, it would surely lead to troublesome complications.

‘This was how it was done in the original work.’

Our protagonist, the ‘Sword Saint,’ secured the sacred objects this way.

The only word displayed on the screen at the time was ‘bribery.’

That’s why I put in a lot.

“Cough, cough.”

Seeing the pouch of gold coins, the man picked it up and coughed falsely.

“I don’t know what you’ve forgotten, but give it up. Ah…, right, I should go have lunch now.”

The manager picked up the pouch and started to walk away.

His intentions were transparent.

“Shall I search through it?”

As Manager Kusat disappeared from view, I began rummaging through the warehouse. It didn’t take long; I had obtained this ‘sacred object’ numerous times before. Although I wondered if there might be something else, as expected, this was all there was to find here.

“Here it is.”

The familiar shape of the box slipped out as I muttered to myself. Inside the small, worn box was an unsightly wooden bell that caught my eye.

‘The sacred bell, Bell of Night.’

It’s been a long time. After getting used to <Let’s Kill the Demon Lord>, this was always a sacred object I obtained. Lifting the handle, I felt a rough texture, and somehow, a sense of familiarity seeped through my skin.

⇒ New trait acquired: ‘Understanding of Demonic Nature.’

It’s been a while since I’ve seen these words. The primary function of the sacred object, ‘Bell of Night,’ is to scatter the demonic energy around when the bell rings. Although its effect is so slight that it might as well be said to have none.

‘It’s safe to say, this sacred object exists merely to counteract the demonic essence.’

The only conventionally useful aspect of obtaining ‘Bell of Night’ is the byproduct trait ‘Understanding of Demonic Nature.’ As the name suggests, this trait enhances understanding of demonic essence, making it easier to sense the lingering thoughts of Barbatos, a demon who sowed chaos across the continent even in death.

‘For instance, like this…’

I closed my eyes and concentrated, as if using ‘Mana Detection.’ This time, I was seeking out beings harboring demonic energy within them. I thought it would be challenging, but recalling my experience using ‘Mana Detection,’ it was surprisingly easy.

‘I can even feel the demons that Ulysses saw.’

It was astonishing to feel them despite some distance. At the same time, as it was demonic energy, an uncomfortable itching and crawling sensation on my skin was inevitable.

‘And there’s more.’

Expanding my range for application, other demons present at the Grand Arena also made their presence known. These were likely the demons being bred for the main event and bloodbath known as ‘Matu,’ the gladiator and demon fight.

‘Should I expand the search a bit more?’

Feeling a surge of exhilaration from experiencing this familiar trait after a long time, I decided to extend my range a bit further. However, I soon realized that now was not the time to be indulging in this place. Officially, I had left on the pretext of a physiological need.

‘It’s not the time for games. I should return…’

As I was about to end the trait, an unpleasant sensation crawled over my skin. <Understanding of Demonic Nature> had detected a demon.

‘Underground?’

The discomfort pointed downward. The problem was the number of sources.

‘It’s not just one or two.’

At least dozens. Among them were demons with a demonic energy so intense it was absurd. A chill-inducing, unpleasant aura. I had felt this level of demonic energy before.

‘Tri-horn demons.’

The very demons that carry soul stones within them. Their power was incomparable, emanating demonic energy characteristic of ‘Tri-horn’ demons.

Act 92

Prev I TOC I Next

Emotions are said to be chemical reactions caused by the secretion of hormones in the human body.

Further, some say they are the brain’s interpretation of the physical state.

But really, I’m just finding this situation awkward.

‘This, damn bastard.’

Like earlier, I unwittingly drew my sword and faced the Sword Saint, cursing under my breath.

This body of mine, the moment it gets involved with ‘Sword Saint’ and ‘Demon,’ generates such intense emotions that they are difficult to control.

Moreover, who is the opponent I’m currently facing with swords drawn?

‘The Sword Saint and even a Demon!’

It’s like Julian’s anger switch is bundled in a buy-one-get-one-free event!

“To stand against such demonic energy, there’s only one possibility.”

Meanwhile, the Sword Saint kept blabbering noisily.

Was he always this talkative?

To shut Hayden’s mouth even a bit, this time I intentionally put more force into the hilt.

Creak—

With a grating sound of metal, the Sword Saint stepped back.

“Such brute strength remains unchanged.”

“On the verge of dying, and yet Master is still the same. Don’t you plan to use your noble aura, which you pride yourself on?”

“If it’s just formalities, it’d be fine, but using the ‘aura’ in this situation could really bring us to a life-or-death struggle, would that be alright?”

Of course, I don’t want that.

If I were to truly fight the Sword Saint, there wouldn’t be a single part left unscathed.

Moreover, the possibility of my defeat is quite significant.

“Still, would that be alright?”

Provoked repeatedly by the Sword Saint.

“Don’t you see what you’re asking for?”

This narrow-eyed villain would risk his life even in such circumstances.

So, it’s okay to throw these words out.

After all, Linne will mediate the situation like earlier.

Then, reluctantly, I’ll just have to pretend to lose.

“Master said it is only right to correct what is good.”

Huh? Why is she suddenly acting like this?

“He always said that not being able to correct the wayward path of Julian was always his oversight.”

Surprised by Linne’s unexpected response, she, like me, drew her sword.

“If I can’t stop Master now, I feel like I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.”

Hey! Shit! No!

You’re supposed to be stopping this! Please, fulfill your role!

Seeing Linne prepare herself with a serious expression, I desperately looked for a lifeline, turning my gaze toward the entrance of the mansion.

Hayden had asked him to leave the room, but due to the menacing atmosphere, I caught sight of the Fourth Prince, Ulysses, peeking in.

‘Why not try to stop this?’

Thinking this as I looked at him, Ulysses moved his gaze elsewhere with a smile that seemed to say, ‘I saw nothing and will continue to see nothing.’

Such a spineless Fourth Prince.

Well, to him, the sight of Julian smiling gently with slightly curved eyes must seem like,

‘I will handle this myself.’

Damn it.

“Linne, what exactly are you trying to stop?”

“Just as Sir Julian said, if Master has indeed injected demonic energy himself, it’s no different from Dawn Society. I don’t want Master to end up like them.”

Hayden’s laugh, tinged with obvious displeasure, followed.

“That phrase ‘similar to Dawn Society,’ even though it’s from a disciple I dearly care about, is a very displeasing remark to me.”

Crash!

Hayden, who had been facing me with his sword, lowered it and with tremendous speed, kicked me in the abdomen.

It was brief, but as I lost my balance, the shock was one thing, but the sudden sensation of floating enveloped my body, and the scenery around me changed instantly.

Just as I managed to regain my composure and was about to fall properly.

[Insight Trait has detected danger.]

[“Inborn Swordsman” responds to the danger.]

I felt a sharp sword blade aiming at me.

“Ugh!”

Forcing my body to twist, I avoided it, and then Hayden’s sharp gaze caught my eye.

Being mid-air, I was in a position where I couldn’t easily counterattack.

Hayden quickly rushed in, grabbed me by the collar, and slammed me to the ground.

[“Character Trait, Poker Face” reduces pain.]

Thanks to my character trait, the pain was minimal, but into my field of vision came the brightly gleaming sword blade once again.

Clang!

I slightly turned my head, and a sword had been thrust right beside me.

“You’re quite resilient for someone on the brink of death, master.”

Is this bastard really trying to kill me?

Though it wasn’t the kind of thought to have in such a situation, to dispel any distracting thoughts, I blurted out nonsense as I kneed Hayden in the ribs.

Boom.

‘What’s with this body, tough as a rock?’

Perhaps because he had protected himself with demonic energy, the sound of my knee colliding with Hayden’s ribs wasn’t that of fragile flesh.

Meanwhile, Hayden was already pulling the sword out of the ground for his next attack.

Swoosh-!

Fortunately, that attack bore no fruit.

Linne, who had quickly joined my side, drove Hayden away with her sword.

“Ha, haah…!”

Linne, pale with guilt for having swung her sword at the Master who had taken her in.

Yet, she steadied herself for a second strike, but Hayden wouldn’t miss such a moment of hesitation.

“A swordsman’s hesitation is death, as I would have told you.”

With a tone as if chiding a disciple, Hayden swung his sword at Linne.

Clang!

This time, I blocked the attack for her.

“How utterly cruel of you, master, to swing such a deadly sword at your disciple.”

Though I spoke like Julian, I really wanted to curse.

Certainly, in the trailer, it was supposed to be me, trying to cut off the ‘protagonist’ Hayden, and ‘Linne,’  was supposed to block it, but it turned out completely the opposite.

“I never imagined I would hear such words from your mouth.”

Amidst complex emotions and a bitter taste lingering on my tongue, bluish mana began to wriggle around Hayden’s body.

Sword-body Unification

He had decided to use the aura he had so strongly advised against.

If things continued this way, it was clear we would be headed into a life-and-death battle I didn’t want.

No matter how much he had changed, he was still the ‘protagonist’ to me.

“Your imagination is lacking. Haha. I shall enlighten you myself, poor master.”

But this body, Julian’s body, desired it.

To kill the master.

To kill the Sword Saint.

To kill the Demon.

[Emotional Peak Detected.]

Intuitively, I felt it. If the “Opened Eyes” manifested here, there would be no turning back.

My mind began to falter under the storm-like strong desire, and the sword I was holding slowly began to gather ‘moonlight’.

“Cough.”

Just as I felt that I could no longer be stopped, Hayden suddenly collapsed on his knees, vomiting blood.

“Cough, cough…!”

The blood that flowed like turbulent water began to stain his shirt dark red, like a tumor.

At the same time, the murderous aura and magical energy that had been fiercely emanating from him began to diminish.

‘He still can’t properly control the demonic energy.’

It’s hardly surprising.

For an ordinary person, fully mastering demonic energy while suppressing ‘Demonization’ is impossible.

It’s only possible if one possesses a special relic or, like Julian, has the trait of a ‘Demon Lord’s Vessel’ typical of villains.

Naturally, our protagonist does not possess the ‘Demon Lord’s Vessel’ trait.

Why? Because he’s the ‘protagonist’.

“How miserable. Is this what becomes of the empire’s pride, the Sword Saint?”

Barely supporting his body with his sword, Hayden, looking at me, a hollow laugh escaped me.

This was truly expressed by me, not as ‘Julian’, but as the player.

I could taste the bitterness in that laugh, but what did it matter now?

“No, it’s not over yet. It hasn’t even started.”

“Even if it’s disgraceful, do you intend to cling to that pitiful life?”

“If I can cling to life, no matter how disgraceful, isn’t there nothing I can’t do?”

“Sir Julian!”

Just then, I felt a chilling murderous intent directed at me, along with the urgent voice of Linne.

With just one motion, I could have killed the ‘protagonist’ in front of me, but for my own safety, I stepped back first.

Whoosh!

A sword filled with tremendous aura traced a path where I had been standing.

“Are you alright, Sir. Sword Saint?”

The man who had swung the sword was ‘Idel’, whom I had encountered at the entrance earlier.

Supported by him, the Sword Saint stood up.

He could not regain his senses due to the writhing demonic energy inside him, but the fighting spirit in his eyes had not yet disappeared.

However, he seemed to know that it was not wise to continue the fight any longer.

“Let’s go,” Hayden said to Idel, his gaze still fixed on me.

Fighting spirit, resentment, longing, desire, resignation.

A complex array of emotions lingered in his eyes.

As they finally disappeared from view,

“Master!”

Linne began to chase after Hayden, but the men in formal attire that followed blocked her.

“Move!”

“Miss Linne, that’s enough.”

When I too stopped her, Linne seemed quite flustered.

Julian, who had been looking forward to fighting the Sword Saint, had blocked her himself.

“Why stop?”

“This isn’t the empire, you see, there are many watching eyes. The followers from earlier are observing this place.”

Realizing that the followers had indeed caught up again, Linne bit her lip hard.

“That’s why you stopped. Of course, you wouldn’t act without meaning.”

Watching Linne mutter to herself, I sighed in relief.

No matter how I think about it, it’s premature to engage in a full-scale battle with the Sword Saint right now.

Moreover, this place is not even under the jurisdiction of the Adratan Empire.

Let’s avoid causing a disturbance. That’s all I’m thinking.

‘In the meantime, it’s just this damned body reacting violently.’

Peek.

Once the commotion had settled, Ulysses, the proud prince of the Empire, made his appearance.

“Ha ha, so this is how it turns out.”

Have I ever seen such a madman?

I had even worse insults ready to come out, but I just couldn’t say them. Damn.

Even though he is a guest, it’s unbelievable that the prince of the Empire does not mediate the disturbance happening in a foreign country.

What is he thinking?

“Thank you, Your Highness Ulysses, for allowing me a moment to vent, I am truly grateful.”

I hinted at that thought, and Ulysses just gave an awkward smile.

“After all, you’re someone I’ll see for a long time, not just a defector. I can overlook a bit of deviation.”

Ulysses spoke as if he was weighing his options; if you think I’m grateful, you’re mistaken, you damned fool.

***

As the chilly night air swept over me, my mind began to clear.

‘Seeing the demonic energy enveloping him, the Sword Saint knew his body was undergoing demonization.’

No, how could he not know?

As much as ‘Julian’, having hunted many demons, he would have easily noticed the changes in his body.

“Sigh….”

As I sighed, the cold night air caused my breath to fog slightly.

The protagonist’s demonization.

If this had been a game, the words ‘Game Over’ might have flashed before my eyes, and I would have tried every means to overcome it.

But I felt strangely calm now.

Why am I so tranquil even though that damned Sword Saint is in such a state?

I really want to ask those who sent me here.

What do they want from me, having possessed ‘Julian’ who kills the ‘Sword Saint’, and turned the ‘Sword Saint’ into such a state?

“It’s really crappy.”

Even amidst such thoughts, respectful language came out naturally, and I cursed inwardly.

It’s funny that even in such a situation, my face remained as calm as a still sea.

Probably because of the emotional traits ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Impassibility’.

‘Why did the Sword Saint turn traitor?’

If undergoing ‘demonization’ was entirely the Sword Saint’s will, why choose that path?

‘For power?’

And it’s not even Julian.

‘What kind of emotional change occurred?’

As I pondered over the person ‘Hayden Reich’, I shook my head from side to side.

‘Now is not the time to focus on the backstory.’

Let’s focus on what I need to do now.

Isn’t the tail that has been following me since I bought the vase still on my trail?

‘They’re very diligent guys.’

They don’t think of dropping it. They should be developing themselves during such times.

But thankfully, since ‘Ulysses’ baptism is over, he will return to the Empire tomorrow.

‘I must take care of the relic before that; it will be a busy day in many ways.’

Naturally, I know where the relic is located.

The city of Arteah’s landmark.

The Grand Arena.

In fact, the biggest reason I came to the Holy Nation of Fernand is none other than to retrieve the relic ‘Bell of Tranquility’.

Ulysses is a prince, but he’s the fourth in line for succession, far from the throne.

It says that he’s not in a relationship worth risking coming to the Holy Nation.

However, ‘Bell of Tranquility’ is different.

‘Recently, Tenellon has been suspecting me.’

After the incident with Gerard, his gaze became strangely sharp.

Not just towards me. It sharpened towards everything about the Dawn Society.

‘So now is the right time.’

It’s the best time to take the first step in swallowing the Dawn Society.

Strike 145

Prev I TOC I Next

Jin-seop received a call from Hyun-soo.

He stroked his chin thoughtfully.

‘I did plan to administer the K-31 injection for the right-hand treatment.’

The K-31 injection is like a miracle shot that revives paralyzed nerves for several days.

However, it could only be used once, and before treatment, it was used to check the level of performance achieved prior to its use.

Because rehabilitation and treatment are ultimately about how much improvement has been made compared to the state before.

“There is, however, a condition. Medical staff will always be on standby in case of any situation.”

-Medical staff?

“Yes, I am likely to be included among that medical team.”

After ending the call, Jin-seop smiled lightly.

In fact, Dr. Jin-seop was a very busy person, not someone who would usually be waiting on standby.

But Jin-seop was curious too.

‘What kind of power does Hyun-soo, the blacksmith, have?’

His curiosity was intensified.

***

Kim Jin-su, an employee of the National Museum, sighed.

Not long ago, a relic of the Baekje era, the Chiljido, was discovered in Daejeon.

What is Chiljido (七支刀)?

It is a sword with one central blade and six branches.

Astonishingly, one such sword has been designated as a national treasure in Japan and is currently housed at the Isonokami Shrine.

Although made in Baekje, it is in Japan because it is said to have been gifted to the King of Japan by King Geunchogo, and it remains a mystical sword with various interpretations.

This time, ‘pieces’ of such a Chiljido were found.

The problem was that these pieces were just two small blade-like branches.

The Chiljido was rusted beyond recognition and its shape was indiscernible.

Jin-su searched for someone who could restore or replicate the Chiljido.

However, no such person existed anymore.

‘Kang Hyun-tae…’

Employee Kim Jin-su’s mouth felt bitter.

Unknowingly, he stood before the Yonggwang sword.

Soon, Park Gwang-hoon, the director of the National Museum, stood beside him.

“The journalists are making a fuss.”

Gwang-hoon was one of the country’s top historians and a professor.

Now in his later years, he had become the director of the National Museum.

“They press on whether we can restore it or not. Is our country’s restoration technology only this much?”

What Gwang-hoon found absurd was this.

“Restore? Without a blacksmith, how can we restore this? And a mere imitation can indeed be produced.”

They could easily print it using 3D technology.

“Then they will say this. Are you saying you’re printing Baekje’s Chiljido with machines? Wasn’t the real Chiljido made by hand?”

What the National Museum currently needs is a Chiljido crafted by a true master.

“What should we do?”

“There’s no way but to exhibit it as it is.”

For now, this was the cleanest solution. Naming it as Chiljido’s blade and then broadcasting a video of the real Chiljido on a monitor.

However, both employee Jin-su and museum director Gwang-hoon were individuals with a strong professional ethos.

They themselves were not satisfied.

What is a museum supposed to be?

It’s a place meant to vividly show people the artifacts from history.

Sometimes the past’s original form is good as is, but the problem was that only two pieces of the blade remained of the Chiljido.

It was difficult to only show these to visitors coming to the National Museum to see the real Chiljido.

A call came to Jin-su.

He smiled happily.

“Hyun-soo, how have you been? What? You want to see the Chiljido…?”

Gwang-hoon’s face twisted suddenly.

‘Is he using his connections to come see it?’

Given the public’s interest, such people do appear, don’t they?

But it was strange.

Given Jin-su’s usual character, he would have declined immediately.

Soon after ending the call, he asked cautiously.

“Can he come see it?”

Gwang-hoon’s face turned red.

“Are you saying that now…”

“He’s the son of Kang Hyun-tae.”

“What?”

Kang Hyun-tae?

The restorer of the Yonggwang Sword?

Many artifacts in national museums across the country have been newly reborn by the hands of Kang Hyun-tae.

The National Museum was indebted to him.

‘Whatever the reason…’

It seemed possible.

Being the son of a blacksmith, he must also be interested in ancient swords.

Moreover, since the master had left many things, it was possible to extend this grace once.

Gwang-hoon consented.

Not long after his approval, seeing the person who entered the National Museum, Gwang-hoon chuckled.

‘He’s just a kid?’

Gwang-hoon had been expecting someone in their early thirties at least.

Soon, the boy named Hyun-soo, who had been observing closely, asked.

“May I reproduce this sword?”

***

Hyun-soo understood the situation at the National Museum.

The people had great interest in the Chiljido.

Thanks to the director’s consideration, he could see the fragments of the Chiljido.

Although just fragments, they were precious items.

And between restoration and reproduction, he judged that reproducing it was appropriate.

“May I reproduce this sword?”

“What? You?”

Jin-su’s face was colored with dismay, and Director Gwang-hoon openly displayed his discomfort.

“Ahem!”

“That’s a bit…”

Jin-su expressed his dilemma.

He couldn’t entrust an object that might become a national treasure to an unverified person.

Then he realized.

‘It’s not about entrusting it, is it?’

Restoration and reproduction are entirely different.

Restoration means restoring something to its original state or fleshing out what remains.

On the other hand, reproduction means literally making something similar.

‘There’s no real risk on our part.’

Jin-su had seen Hyun-soo a few times.

Even when Hyun-soo was a minor, he didn’t seem immature.

Hyun-soo went on to explain the conditions.

Director Park initially listened to the story.

That is, Hyun-soo was suggesting to display the blade fragment and the reproduction together.

Listening to the story, Director Park showed his discomfort.

“…There certainly won’t be any loss on our part. But this is no child’s play. It’s different from what you’ve learned over your father’s shoulder. Moreover, you just said it, to keep the fragment and the reproduction together. That’s a good idea, indeed.”

This is what the original looked like.

It’s much better than broadcasting it via video.

However.

“Do you know that although there are no more blacksmiths, there are plenty of appraisers? I was a university professor, but I also worked as an appraiser.”

In fact, there were still many competent appraisers.

“If it’s just a whim to try, don’t do it, as many appraisers will come to see the reproduction, and if it’s mediocre, the press will make noise. ‘This is what they call a reproduction?'”

Hearing that, Jin-su suddenly recalled a memory.

‘Wow, this is really cool. If it weren’t for Mr. Hyun-tae, what would we have done! Sir, please remain our national treasure master for a long time.’

At that time, Hyun-tae had chuckled.

‘It’d be fine even if I weren’t here.’

‘No way, sir, it wouldn’t work without you. Hahaha!’

‘Maybe…?’

Jin-su cautiously spoke.

“What if we let him try?”

Director Park frowned.

Why is this guy acting like this today?

Of course, there’s no loss.

“Who knows?”

“Umm…”

Director Park had already warned.

Yet Hyun-soo did not relent.

After all, if the appraiser himself thought it was poor, it simply wouldn’t be displayed.

At that moment, Hyun-soo said, “If you are satisfied, I would appreciate it if you could give an interview.”

Glancing sideways, Jin-su checked Director Park’s reaction. It was a request for an interview, directed at Jin-su.

Worried about how the fiery-tempered Director Park would respond, Jin-su quickly mediated, “Yes, that would be fine. If it’s well-made, of course. Oh, I can observe too, right?”

“Of course,” Hyun-soo replied, having finally received approval after some difficulties.

***

Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gyeongju City.

Cars are arriving at the forge.

People getting out of the cars signed a contract prepared by Hye-in. The contract included a clause not to disclose any information about the Chiljido’s production process or its creators.

The medical team consisted of Jin-seop and Nurse Ji-hye, and from the National Museum, there was Jin-su. The filming was to be handled by Ho-beom and his team.

Soon, Jin-seop brought the K-31 injection. “You may feel a hot sensation once it’s injected.”

Hyun-soo then received the injection in his right hand.

Zzzzzz—

“Ah…”

Hyun-soo let out a faint moan. He felt an unfamiliar sensation in his long-unused right hand. In fact, there was no problem with daily activities with his right hand, just that detailed work and overexertion affected it.

After the heat subsided, Hyun-soo’s heart pounded. “It’s been four years.”

Nel and Hye-in, watching him, were also anxious.

‘The first production video to be revealed to the world…’

It was the Chiljido of Baekje, a sword that held considerable international interest and was currently the hottest archaeological find in the country.

‘If it’s successfully executed…’

What impact would it make? And what reaction would there be if people knew it was the work of the current blacksmith, Hyun?

Soon, the production began.

Rrrrr—

Everyone watched the furnace spewing flames.

Melting.

Refining.

Hyun-soo used tongs to secure the glowing red ore for forging.

But something strange happened. Hyun-soo’s right hand, which was about to strike, didn’t move.

‘I’ve waited so long for this moment…’

Sweat trickled down his back. For a moment, he felt as if the pillar he was about to strike with his hand whizzed past him, and a fear crept in that if he struck it, he might never be able to strike again.

“Why is he behaving like that?” someone beyond the camera screen wondered. The group that came with Ho-beom, working for a broadcasting station at Ho-beom’s request, questioned, “Is he scared?”

A blacksmith scared of forging?

Is this filming really okay?

Then Jin-seop, who realized what was happening, said, “Trauma…”

One of the concerns Jin-seop had was that even if Hyun-soo’s right hand was healed, past trauma could still torment him.

A man was watching this unfold. It was Director Park Gwang-hoon, who had just arrived. Soon, the conversations being had by Jin-seop reached his ears. ‘Did something like that happen?’

He felt he had heard it too. His son had rescued Hyeon-tae in the forge and sustained serious injuries. Of course, that was separate from blacksmithing skills.

Initially reluctant, Gwang-hoon had come anyway. Why? He was quite curious about the reproduction of the Chiljido. But he hadn’t been hopeful. In fact, he hadn’t expected much.

When he first saw Hyun-soo yesterday, he thought, ‘Is this young guy trying to commercialize this?’

The artifacts.

And the national treasures that have been preserved by countless people who dedicated their lives to the country. Hyun-soo was young. It seemed like the young man took these matters lightly.

Finally, beyond the camera screen…

“Ah!”

Hyun-soo collapsed, slumping down.

“Heok-heok.”

He gasped for breath.

“Stop the filming!”

“Bring some water!”

The set became chaotic.

Hyun-soo, sprawled on the ground, gasped for air.

Director Park’s mouth turned sour.

‘That shouldn’t even be possible.’

The year 2040.

Everything is mechanized, and robots have replaced human roles.

The new generation no longer cares for relics of the past, and the same goes for their professions.

Moreover, the Chiljido is a royal gift that has endured over a thousand years.

‘There’s no way that young man could make it.’

Director Park turned away.

He felt foolish for having harbored any expectations.

Then.

“Wait, I can do this.”

A voice came through.

***

Hyun-soo, catching his breath, knew.

The reality of working in a forge was as important, if not more so, than in Ares.

The anxiety and fear of never being able to use his right hand again.

If he couldn’t overcome this, he was sure he would never be able to hold a hammer with that hand again, even if his hand improved.

Suddenly, a story about his father came to mind.

‘Remember this well and keep it in your mind.’

His father had drawn countless methods of crafting artifacts in a book.

It was a sad thing to say, but his father had told him, ‘Hyun-soo, protect our history.’

It was a difficult saying.

But finally, he came to understand the meaning of those words.

“Wait, I can do this.”

His ragged breathing steadied, and his body relaxed.

Everyone looked at Hyun-soo with puzzled expressions.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yes.”

Hyun-soo answered Jin-seop’s question with a wry smile.

Then, he grasped the hammer again.

As time passed, he finally understood what his father meant.

The countless artifacts that exist in the world.

‘I am the only one who can reproduce and restore them.’

Chiljido was one of them.

With that thought, a surge of infinite confidence welled up within him.

Unconsciously, he looked around at the people present.

None of those here had ever seen Hyun-soo’s real work as a blacksmith.

‘I want to show them.’

Hyun-soo raised the hammer.

Finally.

Daaaang—

One blacksmith moved for history.

Round 42

Prev | TOC | Next

Guided by Frey, we headed to the cultivation site of the Meluca flowers.

The site was located just outside the forest, not too far away.

“Is this the place…?”

-It looks like there’s nothing here, but the seeds are planted.

It was an empty clearing.

Though it appeared someone had made an effort to remove the weeds, nothing was visible except for the soil.

Before long, the area was bustling with fairies who had come out to watch us.

I had thought they were timid creatures, but now that they were familiar with us, they were quite chatty.

“Hmm, Mark2! What do you think?”

Squeak?

Mark2, who was called out, tilted its head.

It seemed to be wondering what it was supposed to do with this.

“Can we cultivate Meluca flowers here?”

Squeak…?

It looked uncertain.

Then it started moving around, trying to express something.

“Ara, what’s it saying?”

“It says we need to see the seeds!”

“Really?”

I looked at Frey as if to ask if she had heard, and she soon nodded and headed somewhere.

It was a place near the cultivation site where dried flowers were gathered.

Nearby, fairies who seemed to have been working there bowed their heads respectfully.

“Are there any live flowers?”

-There aren’t any live ones, but we have dried flowers left to harvest seeds from.

“That’s a shame.”

I examined the seeds of the flowers.

As expected, there were no item labels, so I couldn’t gather any specific information.

“Are they edible?”

-Well, that would be… uh, yes, of course.

Leaving Frey and Ara’s playful banter behind, I handed the seeds to Mark2.

While Ara watched me nibble on the dried flowers, I observed Mark2 to see if it had figured something out.

Spit!

It repeatedly ate and spat out the seeds.

‘Is it some kind of analysis…?’

I couldn’t understand its actions, but I remembered it doing the same thing in our fields before.

I hadn’t paid much attention to how Mark2 farmed, assuming it knew what it was doing.

Gulp!

“Did you find out something?”

Mark2 nodded and approached us.

Is this going to be easier than I thought?

“Ara, translate what Mark2 says.”

“Sure thing!”

Ara, who had been playfully teasing Frey, quickly ran over.

Gulp! Squeak!

“It’s a unique plant!”

Squeak- Squeak- Gulp!

“It needs to be planted in a place with no light!”

As expected from Mark2!

It didn’t let us down.

Gulp!

“But once it sprouts, it needs light!”

No wonder it’s a rare plant—the growth conditions are quite tricky.

When it’s a seed, it shouldn’t be exposed to light, but once it sprouts, it needs light.

It seemed difficult to find such an environment in the wild.

Squeeeeak!

“And that’s not all!”

“What else does it need?”

Squirm squirm gulp-

“In order for the flower to bloom, it needs strong poison and intense light!”

“What?!”

Alright, I can concede that intense light might make sense. But why on earth does it need poison?

“Poispois, is it your time to shine?!”

Squirm?

Poispois, suddenly called, tilted its purple body. But isn’t Poispois’s poison not particularly strong?

Anyway, we had discovered all the conditions for the Meluca flower to bloom. Frey, who was listening to the conversation, was astonished.

-As expected of the Great Slime Lord! You have solved a problem that our Alfheim has been researching for 200 years in an instant!

-(。˃́⌔˂̀。)!!

-\( ˙▿˙ )/!!

The fairies watching also cheered in delight at Frey’s words. But isn’t it too early to celebrate?

“We’re not done yet. Can you meet all the conditions we just mentioned?”

-Oh, well….

First, let’s assume we plant it in a place with no light.

Once it sprouts, we can transplant it to a place with light.

But the strong poison and intense light are the problems.

What qualifies as “strong” and what does “intense light” mean?

“This is difficult, very difficult.”

-Oh, Great Lord. I don’t know about the poison, but I have an answer for the intense light.

“Really? What is it?”

-The tree we are so grateful for, the Shiny Tree, emits intense light.

“Ah! The Shiny Tree!”

It felt like the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place.

The Meluca flower must have bloomed somewhere, which is why the Alfheim hasn’t starved to death until now. This means this place had an environment that could provide strong light and poison.

“Then what about the poison?”

-Um, have you ever seen a Star Bear?

“Star Bear? No, I haven’t.”

-It’s a bear that lives in the realm of this Shiny Tree.

“A bear?”

There are bears here too?

That’s a bit scary….

-The Star Bear is not poisonous while alive, but after it dies, its carcass emits strong toxicity. Could it be that the Meluca flower bloomed around the carcass of a Star Bear?

“Oh, that sounds plausible.”

All the pieces of the puzzle were complete.

The environment necessary for the Meluca flower to bloom was all present here.

“Now that we know how to do it, we just need to try cultivating it.”

Gulp!

“What now?”

Mark2 gulped and stepped forward.

It seemed to be indicating that it would take care of the cultivation.

“Hmm, we should start heading back soon….”

-Ah, are you returning?

“I have a home base and family to take care of.”

It was uncertain how long it would take to cultivate the Meluca flower. Even the great Mark2 couldn’t predict the harvest time, so it was a bit ambiguous.

‘It takes four days for a round trip. I initially planned to stay for about a week….’

!!

Suddenly, an idea struck me like lightning.

Why not do this?

“Wait a moment.”

I used a skill I had momentarily forgotten about while exploring the dungeon. A slime appeared with a pop.

Squirm?

At the same time, I used the ingredients I brought to reset the cooldown of Liquid Synthesis to make some fruit juice.

“Phew. I managed to avoid a major loss, just barely.”

I confirmed that it had been exactly 25 hours since I entered the dungeon. I lost about an hour, but that’s manageable.

-As expected of the Great Slime Lord! Creating something from nothing!

-(ू˃ o˂ू )!

-⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝

As the slime was created, I handed the slime recruit to the excited fairies.

-What, what is this?

“This is my employee who will work here. From now on, this guy will manage the Meluca cultivation site.”

All slimes were basically farmers. Mark2 was particularly skilled, but the others had basic farming abilities too.

I figured I could have it learn the Meluca flower cultivation methods from Mark2 and then start working.

‘I should set a schedule and rotate them periodically.’

Once the fairies could self-sustain, there would be no need for that.

-Is it really okay with you?

“Yes, but there’s a condition.”

-Please tell me.

Frey’s eyes were full of determination. She looked ready to agree to any condition, no matter how unreasonable.

‘How much honey should I ask for?’

After thinking for a moment, I asked Frey.

“In return for helping with the Meluca cultivation, I want honey. But I don’t know how much you produce, so I’m not sure how much to ask for.”

-Do you want Meluca honey?

“No, no. Just the honey you can’t consume.”

-If it’s that!

Frey, delighted, called the fairies together to discuss. After a brief conversation, they approached me.

-Will you be visiting often?

“Well, maybe once a month? I’m not sure.”

Given the distance, frequent visits would be tough. But once a month seemed feasible.

-Do you have any empty jars?

“Hmm, I don’t have jars, but I have empty containers.”

They were Ara’s snack containers. I had a few empty ones since I carried various crops in them.

When I asked Bokkeum, he produced a container large enough for about three fairies to lie down in. It was a bit large, but considering Ara’s appetite, it made sense.

-We can produce about two of these containers in a month.

“Isn’t that too much?”

-No, it’s just the surplus. If we pushed ourselves, we could make more than five… oops.

Frey quickly closed her mouth, worried that I might ask for five containers.

“Oh?”

-Well, um…

“I’m just kidding. Two will be fine.”

-Are you sure just two containers will be enough?

“Yes.”

Two containers this size every month?

It might seem like a small amount, but I wasn’t planning to sell the honey, so it was fine.

-Oh, thank you so much.

“Why are you crying?”

-I am moved by your generosity, Great Lord. Thank you so much, Great Lord.

“…”

I wondered if they were putting on an act again, but then I understood. They had been facing a crisis due to food shortages, and now they had a solution. It was natural for them to be emotional.

Fairies gathered around the crying Frey, also shedding tears. Then they all expressed their gratitude to me.

“Since nothing is resolved yet, save your thanks for later.”

“Hehehe! This is truly amazing. Now that you understand the greatness of the Great Lord, everyone, kneel before him!”

Ara, where do you come up with those villainous lines?

After the wave of tears passed, we started the actual cultivation of the Meluca flowers.

We might not see them sprout before we leave, but we can at least plant the seeds, right?

“We just need to create a dark space and plant them inside it.”

-Hmm, in that case, should we grow them inside the tree?

“I’ve been thinking, how about creating a sealed space with soil?”

-A sealed space?

“Yeah. We can create a space outside with soil that blocks out the light, and later, when the seeds sprout, we can break the soil.”

-Oh! That way, we wouldn’t need to transplant the seedlings.

“There might be better methods in the future, but for now, this is the best idea I’ve got.”

-It sounds good! Let’s give it a try!

I didn’t help directly but just offered my suggestions. After all, the ones who had to do the actual work were the fairies and the slime rookie, so I only supervised.

“Oh, you made it quite nicely.”

-Hehe.

We created a half-sphere shape with soil over the seeded ground, leaving an empty space inside. Each seed required one half-sphere, but it didn’t take as long as I thought to make them all.

‘The slime had pre-moistened the ground, which should help too.’

I still didn’t know why slime fluid helped plant growth, but since it worked, I accepted it.

“It’s a shame we don’t have more seeds.”

-Indeed.

We did have many seeds initially. However, after Mark2 inspected them, we ended up with just under 100 viable seeds. The rest had already received too much light and couldn’t germinate.

-But if it weren’t for you and Mark2, we would have lost all the seeds. It could have been disastrous.

“We were lucky.”

We watched over the seed planting until it was done and then decided to rest inside the tree.

On the second day of exploring the Dungeon of Gluttony, we encountered the herd of deer and the fairies called Alfheim.

Considering the time spent walking in the forest, it was understandable to be tired.

“Uuugh.”

“Why aren’t you sleeping?”

But Ara, despite looking sleepy, stubbornly stayed awake. When I asked why…

“I’ll sleep after watching the sparkles.”

“You said it’s soon, right?”

“That’s right.”

Even though we had already spent over a day in the dungeon, we had not yet seen the light of the Shiny Tree. Ara referred to it as day and night, but the day and night here felt much longer than on Earth.

– Great Lord! Lady Ara! The Shiny Tree is about to shine!

“Oh! Let’s go see it, Kyu-seong Kyu-seong !”

Ara’s face, filled with sleepiness, brightened up as she grabbed my hand and pulled me outside. When we stepped out of the tree…

“…Wow.”

The whole world was bright.

Yet, we were enveloped in pitch-black darkness.

The sun had disappeared, and the stars were gone.

Only the black night sky existed, surrounding us as if the sky had descended to the ground.

However, the darkness felt warm.

It was a curious sensation. Warm darkness? I had only ever felt that under a blanket, never outdoors.

Soon, I understood why.

A warm light!

Vibrant and colorful lights shimmered. They weren’t blinding, but paradoxically, they illuminated the world brightly.

“This is the Shiny Tree…”

“It’s beautiful!”

I understood why Ara had stayed awake.

The tree was unchanged, but all its leaves glowed in different colors. Fairies danced and fluttered among them.

– Whenever the Shiny Tree shines, we hold a small festival. What do you think? Isn’t it beautiful?

“It’s beautiful. Definitely something to be proud of.”

It was an unforgettable sight.

Something that would likely stay in my memory forever…

Round 41

Prev | TOC | Next

“What is that… a fairy?”

-\(´◓Д◔`)/!!

Incomprehensible language poured out.

It soon became clear that there wasn’t just one fairy-like creature.

-⁀⊙﹏☉⁀

-ヘ(°◇、°)ノ!!

Creatures covered in leaves were making unintelligible sounds at us.

“Ara, what are those?”

“I don’t know either!”

Following the deer, another creature appeared that Ara didn’t recognize.

Perhaps Ara had been trapped at that altar longer than I thought? Maybe new life forms had emerged in the dungeon during that time.

It didn’t make sense that she knew about the Shiny Tree but not these fairies.

“This is really unexpected.”

Setting aside the existence of fairies, we first needed to confirm if they were dangerous.

Physically, these small creatures didn’t seem capable of harming us, but who knew? They might have abilities or magic.

‘Hmm, natives?’

Sometimes, dungeons contained natives from that world. Since dungeons were believed to be fragments of other worlds, it was entirely possible.

“Can we communicate?”

“I will try speaking to them!”

Ara struck a proud pose, arms crossed, and stepped forward. I wondered why she did that, but her following words explained it.

“I am Ara! The master of this dungeon!”

Ah, she was proud because she was the master.

From Ara’s perspective, it might feel like strangers had moved into her home while she was away.

But would they understand Korean? I thought she might speak the monsters’ language with such confidence.

-(‘◇’)?

“Arfheim? Alfheim?”

What, they can understand?

Come to think of it, Ara could communicate with slimes too. I hadn’t realized she could talk to other species or monsters.

‘Good thing we have Ara.’

Ara was acting as our translator.

After listening quietly to the fairies for a while, Ara exclaimed.

“It’s okay to live here!”

-ヽ(;^o^ヽ)

Seeing the fairies suddenly happy, I asked her quietly.

“What were you talking about?”

“They asked if they could live here, so I said yes!”

The pure conversation between the two species made me pause and try to grasp their innocence.

“Hm.”

“If you have any questions, tell me! I’ll pass them on!”

I had many questions.

But first, I should say this.

“Tell them we’re not bad people and they don’t need to be scared.”

“Oh! As expected of Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ! So smart!”

I wasn’t sure what her standard for “smart” was, but if Ara was satisfied, that was enough. She relayed my words exactly in Korean, and the fairies nodded.

Nodding seemed to be a universal gesture.

-(。・ω・。)?

“They’re asking why we’re here!”

“Tell them we’re just looking around. To the Shiny Tree. You’re the original master here, right?”

“Oh? Now that you mention it, that’s right! I am the master!”

When Ara explained we were just looking around, the fairies, who had seemed frightened, began to relax.

“There’s no need to be scared! We’re just visiting!”

After a few more words from Ara, the fairies calmed down and came down from the tree to approach us.

-ヽ(•̀ω•́ )ゝ?

“Oh, that’s nice!”

“What are they saying?”

“They’re going to guide us to their village.”

There’s a village?

That was definitely intriguing.

I hadn’t expected a fairy village.

Two fairies perched on Ara’s shoulders and guided us. Their direction was the same as the tree we were heading to.

“So, what were they doing here?”

“They were looking for food.”

“Food?”

Ara translated my question.

The answer came quickly, and Ara spoke.

“Honey from flowers is their food. But…”

“But?”

“It’s honey from a flower called Meluca. They can’t use honey from other flowers.”

“They’re picky eaters.”

“They said they came far to find Meluca.”

As we chatted, we soon reached the base of the Shiny Tree.

“Wow.”

Up close, the tree trunk looked less like wood and more like a cliff. An endless cliff.

‘It’s not a cliff, more like a canyon? It stretches endlessly not only upward but also to the sides.’

After walking for two days, we had finally reached the tree.

Normally, we would have set up camp nearby to rest, but we decided to visit the village of the fairies, who called themselves Alfheim.

-⸜(。˃ o ˂ )⸝~~~~!!!

At that moment, a fairy nearby made a loud noise. Suddenly, fairies appeared from all directions, surrounding us.

‘Are they here to stop intruders? But their expressions…’

They looked frightened.

It seemed they weren’t a belligerent race, but the sudden situation still warranted caution.

“Hey! There’s no need to worry! I am Ara, the master of this dungeon!”

Ara stepped forward with a stern expression, waving her hand dismissively.

The fairies who had come to confront us looked startled by Ara’s sudden action.

– The master of the dungeon?

“Oh? You can understand?”

The mysterious voice suddenly became comprehensible.

Looking for the source of the voice, I saw a winged fairy emerging from a gap in the trees, quite far above us, looking down.

It wasn’t flying, but the wings set it apart from the other fairies.

– I am Frey, the ruler of this land. Who dares to claim the master’s title?

A beautiful appearance and a mysterious voice.

However, her tone was quite rude.

“Huh? I am the master!”

Ara stammered, taken aback.

The fairy who introduced herself as Frey sneered and began to descend from the tree.

“Can’t you use your wings?”

– I choose not to use them. It’s not that I can’t.

Frey, climbing down like a rock climber, made an excuse.

‘So she can’t use them.’

Despite her arrogant demeanor, it seemed Frey was also quite innocent.

Once on the ground, Frey puffed out her chest and spoke.

– So, what is your name?

“I am Ara!”

– Ara? Ha! I’ve never heard of such a name in the 300 years our Alfheim have lived here!

Frey, who had been mocking, now turned her gaze to me.

– And what about you?

“Me? Hmm, I’m…”

As I pondered how to introduce myself, I glanced at the slimes quietly standing behind me.

“I’m the Great Slime Lord.”

– …The Great Slime Lord?

Frey murmured, then began to tremble slightly.

– Th-The Great Slime Lord?!

“Why are you reacting like that? Do you know the name?”

Frey’s behavior had clearly changed, trembling noticeably.

She tried to shake her head in response to my question but ended up asking again.

– Is it really true that you are the Great Slime Lord?

“And the tone suddenly got polite.”

It seemed Frey knew about the Great Slime Lord.

-…

“Don’t be too upset, I was just joking. But I am the Great Slime Lord. You can see the slimes behind me, right?”

Squirm!

Mark2 stepped forward and bowed, or at least mimicked a bow.

“And Ara here really is the master of this dungeon.”

– Th-That can’t be! The previous master of this dungeon was the terrifying demon, Gluttony Gula!

“Ara is that Gluttony Slime. Now she’s Ara.”

– Gasp!

Frey’s eyes began to tremble violently. Seeing this, Ara asked worriedly.

“Frey! Are you okay?”

– I am fine, no, I am fine.

Frey, now extremely polite, gestured to the fairies around us. Then she shouted.

– They are guests! Treat them with the utmost care!

“Frey, so about what you said earlier? You claimed to be the master here.”

– M-Me? H-Haha. I don’t quite remember…

Her actions were quite endearing.

Compared to the other fairies, Frey was quite arrogant, but she also had a certain purity about her.

“But I’ve been wondering, why can I understand everything you say?”

– Ah! It’s magic. Or rather, it’s a unique ability of mine as the queen of Alfheim.

At the end, I faintly heard her mumble that it might also be a curse. Was there some story behind it?

Anyway, we followed Frey’s guidance and entered the tree. Fortunately, there was a separate entrance, so we didn’t have to climb up the tree.

“Ara, have you ever been inside the tree before?”

“Yes! I nibbled on the tree a bit!”

-…Ha, hahaha.

Contrary to my expectations, the interior was bright.

And it was incredibly spacious. I thought it might be cramped for me since the small fairies lived here, but the scale was no joke.

‘Humans could live here too.’

As I looked at the intricately decorated fairy dwellings, I felt like I had entered a giant dollhouse.

“It’s changed a lot!”

– Well, yes. We’ve decorated the areas you nibbled on to make them livable.

The current space alone looked larger than six or so soccer fields put together. Did Ara really eat all of this?

‘Ara must have been a monster before becoming human-shaped!’

I wished I could have seen that form, but oh well.

Regardless, we continued to marvel as Frey showed us around the fairy village.

Inside the tree were beautiful scenes reminiscent of a fantasy fairy tale.

-(ू˃ o˂ू )

-(╹ਊ╹)/

The fairies we encountered seemed curious about us. Because of Frey’s presence, they didn’t appear scared.

“Wow, this is quite amazing.”

“Hoong!”

Following Frey’s lead, we arrived at an intriguing location.

– This is the training ground for the Starlight Bugs. There are also breeding grounds, nurseries, and honey collection areas.

“You raise those bugs?”

– We don’t raise all of them, but we do take care of about half.

The fairies were raising the bugs I had thought were fireflies. But why raise bugs?

“You said the Alfheim eat honey earlier, right? Do these bugs…?”

– The Starlight Bugs help us find flowers and collect honey. Processing the honey is our job.

Hearing my question, Frey seemed pleased and gave some instructions to a nearby fairy. The fairy quickly went somewhere and returned with a small box.

“What’s this?”

– It’s honey we’ve processed ourselves. It’s mostly used as food for the Starlight Bugs, but other creatures like it too.

Honey!

That definitely piqued my interest.

The box was small because the fairies were small, but it still contained a drop of honey. Each of us—Ara, the slimes, and I—received one box.

Drip!

Just one drop.

But it was the sweetest honey I had ever tasted.

‘Wow, this fragrance is incredible.’

The floral scent remained, subtly blending with the taste without being overpowering.

“This is amazing.”

– Hoho. It’s not such a big deal.

Frey’s beaming smile was both funny and cute. However, her expression soon turned somber.

-…But recently, we haven’t been able to find the flowers we need. No matter how much other honey we make, it’s meaningless.

“Meluca?”

– Yes. The Starlight Bugs can eat any honey we process, but we Alfheim can only consume honey from the Meluca flower.

Hmm, it seemed we had visited during a difficult time for them.

A thought occurred to me.

“Can’t you cultivate this Meluca flower?”

– We’ve been trying for over 200 years. But we’ve never succeeded. Meluca is rare because it’s a difficult plant to grow…

“Then how about this?”

– Yes?

“Would you let me try to cultivate Meluca?”

Frey tilted her head, then gave a bitter smile, as if she thought she had misheard.

– We appreciate your willingness, but even we, who know the plant’s nature well, have failed for over 200 years.

“Right. I’m not asking because I expect success. I just want to give it a try.”

– Of course. I have no reason or right to stop you.

“Really?”

If this goes well…

I might be able to get this delicious honey indefinitely.
