Round 29

Last time when I briefly went out, I bought various clothes that Ara might like. Among them, Ara liked a children’s dungaree outfit designed like work clothes the most, so I dressed her in it and we went outside.

“Wow!!”

Ara, seeing the outside of the dungeon for the first time, looked around and exclaimed in awe. But could a monster really come out of the dungeon this easily?

‘I still have a lot to learn.’

Although I came out without worries, several questions popped up once I actually did. Of course, there had been instances where monsters burst out if a dungeon was neglected for too long…

“Look, look! There are so many trees!”

Ara, dressed in the dungarees, pointed at the trees and shouted. Seon-ah, watching this scene, somehow smiled slyly.

“Shall we start?”

Might as well be positive about it. First, I should contact Young-seong.

* * *

After parting with my younger siblings, I headed towards the Ara Hongryeon Guild. Ara’s exclamations didn’t stop along the way, but it wasn’t a problem.

‘She’s attracting more attention than I thought.’

Whenever Ara spoke or moved briskly, people’s eyes followed her. However, these glances, contrary to my worries, were natural reactions to spotting a cute child.

“Oh, look at that child.”

“Blonde hair. Is she a foreigner?”

Ara seemed to notice these stares and asked with a puzzled tilt of her head.

“Look, look! Why is everyone staring at me?”

“Because Ara is cute?”

“Hmm! I am indeed cute!”

After that, she strutted around with a rather haughty face, which didn’t last long as her neck soon got tired and she reverted to her normal self.

Taking the subway, we arrived in Seocho District and headed to our destination, the Ara Hongryeon Guild.

“Wow…”

Ara gaped at the huge building, tilting her head back to see the top. She slowly started counting from the bottom up.

“One, two, three, four…”

“Ara?”

“Look, look! How tall is this thing! It feels like my neck will snap!”

“Well, I haven’t checked yet. We’ll find out soon since we’re about to go up.”

I had contacted Young-seong, and he suggested meeting at the Ara Hongryeon Guild. It was just what I was about to bring up, so I happily agreed.

‘I haven’t yet talked about Ara…’

Giggling, Ara tightly held my hand as she looked around. As we entered the building, the tall, handsome bodyguard I had seen before was standing there.

“Welcome to the Ara Hongryeon Guild. May I ask where you are from… Ah! Awakener Lee Kyu-seong, nice to see you again.”

“Hello.”

As I bowed in greeting, Ara mimicked me.

“Hello?”

“Hello?”

It turned into a somewhat strange greeting, but the young man smiled and bowed at Ara.

“This time, I have received prior instructions. I will personally guide you.”

“Thank you.”

This time, no mistakes.

Following the man’s lead, we took the elevator to the top floor.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! I feel like I’m being pulled down!”

Ara, experiencing the elevator for the first time, made a fuss. I whispered to her gently,

“This is called an elevator, and we are going up to the top. Remember the tall building you were counting? We’re going to the top of that building.”

“Really?! Wow!”

Since there were no signs indicating the floor numbers, I casually asked the man,

“By any chance, how many floors does the Ara Hongryeon building have?”

“It has 140 floors. And what a cute young lady she is.”

“Ha ha. Thank you.”

Ara, unaware that the compliment was directed at her, continued to fuss about feeling like she was being pulled downward. When the elevator signaled our arrival, she burst into a wide grin.

“We’re at the top!”

As soon as the ors opened, Ara dashed out but was quickly grabbed by a large hand.

“Uh?!”

“Ha ha ha! What’s this cute little thing?”

It was Kang Hanul.

Seeing him after a long time, he still had a robust appearance and he put Ara on his shoulders as if they had always known each other.

“I’ve brought a guest.”

“Great job, Jeong-gil. Hey, Lee Kyu-seong! Long time no see!”

I smiled back warmly at Kang Hanul’s cheerful greeting.

“It’s been a while.”

“Young-seong will arrive soon. By the way, who is this kid? Your daughter?”

“Not my daughter, actually…”

Realizing that Kang Hanul was an acquaintance of mine, Ara comfortably enjoyed being on his shoulders, chattering away happily. I thought to myself that I might have to give her a ride like that later.

“Actually, I came to the Ara Hongryeon Guild to seek advice about this child, as Awakener Hanul kindly advised last time.”

“Just call me brother.”

“Yes, Brother Hanul.”

At that moment, someone walked out from the side.

Actually, two people did.

“You’re here, Kyu-seong. I received a heads-up that you were coming to meet Team Leader Kang Hanul.”

“Nice to see you again, Guild Leader.”

It was the calm-looking Guild Leader Han Seok-jun, and the other person was…

‘Ah! It’s Haesol the Awakener!’

I believe he’s the Deputy Leader of Team 2, though I’m not sure.

As I bowed to greet them, Haesol approached and offered a handshake. His narrow eyes were memorable.

“I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m Haesol, the Deputy Leader of Ara Hongryeon’s Team 2.”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Kyu-seong.”

While we were exchanging greetings, on the other side, Ara and Kang Hanul were creating a boisterous scene.

“This is my first time seeing this child? Did you bring her, Mr. Kyu-seong?”

“Yes, actually, I came to consult about her. Is it possible to talk a bit?”

Han Seok-jun and Haesol tilted their heads, possibly not fully understanding my request. Given Ara’s appearance as just a young child, they might have wondered what kind of consultation could be necessary.

“It’s about awakening.”

“Ah! I see. Since we have some time, shall we talk?”

* * *

Until Young-seong arrived, I set aside time to speak with Guild Leader Han Seok-jun and Kang Hanul. Haesol had to leave early due to other duties.

Sitting in a room similar to a conference room, I briefly relayed the story, and Han Seok-jun and Kang Hanul looked at Ara with serious expressions.

“This cute child is a monster…”

They were clearly shocked by the unexpected revelation.

Admittedly, even though there are humanoid monsters, none had been discovered that resembled a human as closely as Ara did.

“So, Mr. Kyu-seong, you’re saying Ara is your familiar?”

“Yes.”

“You must have been quite surprised.”

As if he hadn’t just been serious, Han Seok-jun gave me a reassuring look. It seemed not so much for me, but rather out of concern that Ara might feel uneasy.

“Ara, would it be alright if this uncle touched your ear?”

Kang Hanul’s tough demeanor softened as he carefully handled Ara. I was grateful that he still treated her like a child, without any prejudice against her being a monster.

“You can touch it!”

“Ha ha, thank you.”

Even though there was no need to take off her hat, Ara briskly ran up to Kang Hanul and lifted his hat.

“Oh?”

Kang Hanul and Han Seok-jun’s eyes sparkled at the sight of real tiger ears on her head.

Kang Hanul carefully touched the ears.

“They’re really ears. Fascinating.”

“Hee hee! It tickles!”

“Oh, sorry, sorry.”

Han Seok-jun, who had been watching closely, asked,

“Is she a girl?”

“She has no gender.”

“No gender…?”

“…No.”

“Hmm, that’s surprising.”

It seemed they vaguely understood my implication that there was nothing to distinguish her gender.

“Is it impossible to identify exactly what kind of monster she is?”

“Well… I know, but it’s difficult to provide a lot of information.”

“I understand.”

Han Seok-jun kept his gaze on Ara even as he talked with me. Ara seemed to really like Kang Hanul, as she was busy playing around with him.

“Is she capable of combat?”

“She might be when she grows more, but I’m not sure. And I wonder if there would even be a need for her to fight.”

At first, I thought of using Ara to complete quests, but now I’m not so sure…

“Does she have any skills or abilities?”

“There is one skill.”

I didn’t mention Devour. It was too specific and unique an ability to talk about.

“Oh, what skill is that?”

“Breath.”

“…Breath?”

Their eyes, which had been looking at Ara, returned to me filled with incredulity. The idea of a child-like Ara using Breath seemed preposterous.

Indeed, I felt the same.

“That’s quite an unexpected skill.”

“But I’ve only checked it in the status window; I’ve never actually seen it used.”

“How about we test it here?”

“Here?”

“There’s a training ground for awakeners. I can assure you, it’s the best facility in the country.”

It seemed like a good idea to test out Breath since Devour was a basic ability and couldn’t be confirmed otherwise.

“And if you’d like, we can also test Ara’s overall physical abilities. It won’t be too hard, and Ara might enjoy it like a game.”

“Shall we?”

I wasn’t very hopeful.

Given Ara’s child-like appearance, I assumed her stats would be slightly better than an average human’s at best.

Of course, my agreement was partly due to curiosity.

‘Ara is faster than me.’

Sometimes when we played tag, I was amazed at her speed. Initially, I let her win, but after she ate some crops and her stats increased, I couldn’t catch her even when I tried seriously.

Considering just her speed, perhaps the results might be quite surprising?

“Strike while the iron is hot; let’s go right now.”

* * *

We started with the physical ability test.

Han Seok-jun decided to measure only to the extent that Ara wouldn’t find it too difficult and tried to estimate her limits from there.

As a result of testing her dynamic vision, strength, speed, endurance, reaction speed, spatial perception, and more…

“That’s quite surprising.”

Ara was assessed to have physical capabilities similar to those of a Level 3 Awakener. Of course, we didn’t push her to her limits, so this was merely an estimate, but it was indeed an impressive result.

“Look, look! This is fun! I want to do it again!”

Especially during the reaction speed test, which showed results indicative of a Level 4 or higher, Ara seemed to think of the test as a game, as she ran towards me with a bright smile.

“We can do it again.”

“Wow! That’s great!”

Han Seok-jun chuckled and nodded, and Ara went back to do another reaction speed test.

“Considering her small physique, the stats are definitely impressive. We didn’t do the endurance test, but even so, she’s already at a Level 3 Awakener’s standard.”

“I’m surprised too.”

Seeing her run so fast, I thought she was not ordinary, but now I see why I couldn’t catch her.

After playing so vigorously, Ara soon scampered back to me.

“It was fun!”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

“Look, look! Playing made me hungry!”

I had brought plenty of food, so there was no worry about that. But before that…

“Shall we try shooting a Breath and then have something to eat?”

“Oh! Breath! That sounds good!”

Ara nodded her head eagerly, smiling broadly.

So far, everything was within the expected range, so I wasn’t too worried about the Breath.

At most, it might have the destructive power of a Level 3 or 4 Awakener.

“This is the power machine. It’s where Awakeners test their skills.”

When we reached the measuring device, Ara tilted her head.

“Breath?”

“Yes. Just use Breath towards that.”

“Got it! It’s my first Breath!”

Ara seemed excited about using a power she was trying for the first time, her eyes sparkling.

In the testing room, it was just Han Seok-jun, Ara, and myself. Even Kang Hanul had been politely sent away by Han Seok-jun.

“Hoooooo…”

Ara took a deep breath.

Even that looked adorably unfair.

In that moment.

“Phaaaaa——!!”

Kwaaaaaang———!!!

Suddenly, there was a flash before us, and then something like a beam of light was emitted a short distance in front of Ara’s mouth.

“……”

“……”

Han Seok-jun and I watched in silence, speechless.

Sizzle sizzle-

The floor of the testing room, which would normally withstand any attack, was deeply grooved and melting away. We could feel the heat even from a distance.

After releasing the Breath powerfully, Ara turned to us with a slight smile.

“I’m hungry!”

Round 28

Unexpectedly, despite the attention of my siblings and Ara, I examined the description of the item.

[Magic Sweet Potato Matang]

[Obtain Physical Enhancement LV.1 for 3 hours.]

The description was brief.

But it was definitely different from regular sweet potatoes.

‘It was a slight physical enhancement for 3 minutes, but now it’s turned into an awakening ability.’

Though it was only for 3 hours and just level 1, the addition of an awakening ability was astonishing. Such a thing was thought impossible unless one was like me, with dual awakening abilities, and now it became possible just by eating food.

“That’s crazy.”

“Why? What’s wrong, bro?”

“Your cooking has gained an awakening ability.”

“…What does that mean?”

Jae-seong’s eyes wavered.

At the same time, Seon-ah looked excitedly at the candies.

“An awakening ability?!”

“I’m not sure if it works on ordinary people, but the description says it grants an awakening ability for physical enhancement for 3 hours.”

“Is it okay for us to eat this?”

Seon-ah calmed down after hearing my words.

Just then, Ara, still drooling, looked upset.

“Is it not okay to eat?”

“Ah…”

Seon-ah’s expression faltered.

I smiled at them both.

“Just eat it. We can always make more if needed.”

Whether the same effects could be replicated or if it could turn into an item again was uncertain, but it didn’t really matter.

Feeding Ara good food, good items, enhanced her abilities. The efficiency might drop a bit, but…

‘Seeing Ara and my siblings happy while eating delicious things is a reward for me, too.’

Having established ourselves to some extent, I wasn’t in a rush. With my abilities, I could achieve far greater results than what this one candy could offer.

“Let’s eat.”

“Bro, can’t we try making it just once more? Just in case.”

“Then it’ll get cold.”

“Sweet potato candies are still good when cold.”

Jae-seong and Seon-ah sent me intense looks.

These kids didn’t have the same peace of mind as me. I understood them well enough.

“Ara, can you wait a little longer? If I make one more, you can have it all to yourself.”

“Ugh… Okay then.”

Seon-ah wiped the drool from beneath Ara’s chin.

Thus, the torturous wait continued for Ara as we prepared to cook the sweet potato again.

I felt we could have just let her eat one in the meantime, but feared the side effects might be too severe, so I endured.

“You’ve waited a long time? The sweet potato candies are done again.”

“Candies! Candies!”

The awaited moment.

I checked the newly made sweet potato candies.

[Magic Sweet Potato Matang]

[Obtain Physical Enhancement LV.1 for 2 hours 13 minutes.]

Oh? The time has changed slightly.

“How about it, bro?”

“It’s done. The item description showed up.”

“Awesome!”

Seon-ah cheered on behalf of Jae-seong and me. Being well-versed in awakened beings, she seemed to truly grasp the magnitude of this event.

“But earlier it was for 3 hours, now it’s showing 2 hours 13 minutes.”

“Ah… I rushed this batch a bit, so the quality might have dropped. Could that be why?”

It was a reasonable assumption. To me, both batches seemed tasty, but Jae-seong, who did the cooking, would know better.

‘Now that I think about it, creating items from my crops… This could sell well.’

I wasn’t sure if mass production was feasible, but if handled well, Jae-seong wouldn’t have to worry about his restaurant failing in the future. Of course, even without these effects, the taste alone was competitive enough.

“Candies!”

“Yeah, yeah. Sorry to keep you waiting. Let’s eat now.”

We decided to start by eating the candies that had cooled down enough.

The candies, coated in syrup, had hardened like candy but still retained their golden allure, even seeming more lustrous…

‘They must have looked dazzling while being cooked.’

As I picked one up and popped it into my mouth, a familiar sweetness hit me.

It felt ordinary at first, but as I chewed, it transformed dramatically.

“Umm!!”

We moaned simultaneously, looking at each other as if to say, ‘You feel it too, right?’

The sweetness of this batch of sweet potatoes was much more pronounced than before, but it didn’t upset the balance at all.

The concentrated flavor and sweetness of the sweet potatoes burst like a water balloon, hidden under the coating of sugar and syrup.

This dramatic presentation made eating them feel not just like having food but like experiencing the climax of an orchestra concert.

“This isn’t just food…”

As I muttered unknowingly, Jae-seong nodded vigorously as if he understood.

“You could feel the thrill of a course meal in just one piece of this sweet potato candy! This is a revolution in the culinary world!”

Excited, Jae-seong picked up another candy.

However, he didn’t put it in his mouth right away but examined it intensely while holding it.

“If we intentionally arrange a course meal with these kinds of foods, it wouldn’t just be eating; it would be an experience as profound as watching a play or a concert.”

While we chatted, Seon-ah savored the candy with her eyes closed, and Ara, with her tiny hands, inhaled them as if possessed.

“This is so delicious!”

Feeling my gaze, Ara shouted with her mouth full of candies. Then, startled, she picked up the bowl with the second batch of candies.

“You can have all of those to yourself.”

I thought Ara was being greedy, but then she surprised me with her actions.

“I’m going to share them downstairs! Delicious things should be shared!”

“Ah!”

Blinded by the idea of items, I had completely forgotten about the slimes.

I quickly helped Ara, who was trying to carry a stack of candies as tall as her tiny body.

“Ah, how can our Ara be so thoughtfully adorable?”

“Why is Ara ‘our’ Ara?”

I teased Seon-ah with her own words as we all headed downstairs. The slimes, probably drawn by the smell, gathered around.

Considering Ara’s appetite, I had made plenty of candies, enough to share with the slimes.

Squish! Squish!

Pop!

The candies smelled less than roasted or steamed sweet potatoes, but all the flavor and aroma were concentrated inside.

That’s probably why, to the slimes, the nearly scentless candies just seemed like a joyful treat.

“Hehe. You guys, this is what sweet potato candies are.”

“It’s candies!”

“Pop? Squirm?”

Brrrr!!

The slimes reacted immediately after eating the sweet potato candies, shaking their bodies as if to say, ‘What did I just eat?’

“Hehe! Everyone likes it! As expected, these candies are unbeatable!”

Ara, who understood the language of the slimes, happily ate one herself as if it was her own accomplishment, then clenched her hands and shivered.

“It’s delicious! Indeed, this is Jae-seong’s doing!”

Watching the joyful Ara and slimes, I too ate a candy. It was a sophisticated yet snack-like taste, melting away all my worries into bliss.

Yes, this is what happiness is—what else could it be?

‘I want to share this feeling with others.’

The first people who came to mind were naturally my parents.

I should ask my siblings to take some crops from the storage later so that they can enjoy them with our parents.

Next would obviously be Young-seong and Kang Hanul, the awakened ones.

I had been planning to contact them anyway, but now it seems like a good time for an outing.

I also wanted to spread this happiness to strangers.

‘Once I handle the dungeon issue, I’ll help Jae-seong open his restaurant quickly.’

Just imagining it filled my heart.

* * *

After the candy commotion, we packed up.

Unfortunately, the effects of the candies did not manifest in Jae-seong and Seon-ah, who were ordinary people.

“Bro, how about we just take Ara out with us?”

Jae-seong asked worriedly as I was preparing for the outing. Seon-ah supported his suggestion.

“Yeah, brother. Ara would probably enjoy that too…”

“I’d like to take her out, but Ara’s appearance is not exactly ordinary…”

Golden blonde hair, eyes like a tiger, and tiger ears.

Plus, overwhelmingly cute.

It might be fortunate that she doesn’t have a tail, but her appearance was still very conspicuous.

I worried about how to handle the situation if someone felt something was off and reported it.

“There’s only one solution I can think of.”

“Oh? You have a method?”

Seon-ah spoke confidently, and next to me, Ara, clutching my leg, looked up at Seon-ah with hopeful eyes.

“Join a guild.”

“Ah…”

“There are many types of awakened beings, right? Some have summoning abilities, and there are tamers. You could register in such a way that you can legally bring Ara along.”

“That seems like the right approach. Of course, it would still be noticeable.”

I had never heard of humanoid familiars before.

While there might be humanoid familiars or demons in other countries that I’m not aware of, there certainly weren’t any in South Korea.

“Do you have connections with the Ara Hongryeon Guild? Maybe you should consult with them?”

“Hmm…”

While eating the candies, I recounted what had happened recently. Jae-seong was somewhat distracted by inspiration for his cooking, but Seon-ah was very interested.

“If that’s too burdensome, maybe talk to Kang Hanul first.”

“Kang Hanul? Hmm, I’ll think about it a bit.”

Whatever happens, if Ara isn’t going to spend her life only in dungeons, this is a problem we’ll need to address eventually.

Plus, once Ara grows more, we’ll likely go dungeon raiding together, so it’s something I need to consider in advance.

‘After all, there are hardly any people who can see Ara’s information.’

There are awakened beings who can see information about monsters, but they are extremely rare. So rare, in fact, that there is only one such person in our country.

As I was lost in thought, Ara rubbed her face against my leg.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong.”

“Yeah. I’ll be back quickly this time too. I’ll bring back lots of tasty treats.”

“Okay.”

Seeing Ara looking so disheartened made me feel like I was somehow a major criminal.

…I suppose I really should arrange a meeting with the Ara Hongryeon Guild through Young-seong or Awakener Kang Hanul.

“No, let’s just go together.”

“Together!?”

Ara’s head shot up, her eyes sparkling.

And my siblings nodded, smiling as if they knew this would be my decision.

“It will be noticeable as you said, bro. But in times like these, I think there’s no need to worry too much.”

“Right, brother. From what I see, you’re being too overprotective.”

Indeed, looking at the appearances of other awakeners nowadays, Ara’s unique features wouldn’t even be considered unusual.

Many had their appearances changed by the manifestation of their powers or were adorned with all sorts of gear and accessories collected from dungeons.

It had become normal in the current era, unlike the past. My siblings were right; I was worrying too much.

‘I tried not to be overprotective…’

And yet, here I was, being called overprotective by Seon-ah.

But anyone would become overprotective if they had someone like Ara to look after.

“Still, we should probably cover her ears?”

“No, if she’s just wearing a straw hat, it should be fine. People probably won’t even think they’re real ears and will assume they’re just decorations on the hat.”

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! We’re going together! I’ll behave well!”

After thinking if there was anything more to prepare, I nodded.

“Alright, let’s go!”

“Wow! We’re going out!”

And so, Ara’s first outing was decided.

Survival 96

Cernia Dormitory.

Imagine cramming all those noble children into one building—its size must be immense.

As accommodations prepared for nobles, each room in the academy is made large to ensure they are not inconvenienced.

Because of this, it was incomparable to the ordinary dormitories in terms of sheer height alone.

But there are always ranks among the nobles.

A child from a baron’s family would be ranked lower than a child from a viscount’s family, and a child from a viscount’s family lower than a child from an earl’s family.

This building wholly embodied these layers of authority.

“When I first saw it, I couldn’t help but scoff.”

Even to my untrained eye, the building seemed grotesquely shaped.

I wondered how it could bear the load, with each upper floor increasingly spacious.

By the time one reached the top floor, it spanned an area two to three times that of the first floor, resembling the cap of a mushroom.

‘Even at admission, I felt bad, but seeing it in person, it’s even worse.’

If only it had straight walls like Earth’s apartments.

While lower nobles like barons lived in the narrowest spaces on the overshadowed first floor,

The higher nobles enjoyed larger spaces and ample sunlight on the upper floors.

Me?

I am the third son of a baron’s family, not even the second.

Naturally, I should have been one of the dark and cramped first-floor residents… but I was not.

‘Because the academy strictly ranks by academic performance.’

The disparity in education provided by our families.

The quality of magic and skills passed down through generations.

Innate talent.

Usually, since from a young age prodigies are heavily supported by their families, ranking often correlates with titles, and the top floors are generally reserved for dukes or the crown prince.

‘But who am I? Third-ranked in admission.’

I too am a resident of this top floor, a deviant from a baronial family within this rigid caste system.

Serving Luciana, being on the same floor makes it quite convenient to move around, which is a significant advantage.

However,

The place I am currently standing is a corridor far from my room.

I was on my way responding to an invitation.

“Too much of something can become art,” they say.

The opulence of the golden decorations from the door hinted that he was the wealthiest man in the nation.

Even the servant waiting at the door.

“You are Hans Byron, I see. The young master is inside.”

A person, presumably another servant like me, bowed his head and greeted me respectfully.

He might even be of a higher noble origin than myself.

It was definitely a treatment befitting a guest.

However, that didn’t mean my already lowered opinion of him would rise again.

***

A luxurious letter adorned with golden decorations.

And a seal embossed with the Tree of Life.

The letter from the young master of the southern Daimon ducal family read as follows:

[To Hans Byron, the champion of the martial arts tournament and the recent star of the academy.]

[…]

[Enough with the pleasantries. I’ll get to the point.]

[I have something urgent to tell you, without Lady Speda’s knowledge. Come to my room this Saturday.]

‘Without Lady Speda’s knowledge.’

A phrase with ominous implications.

I can guess his intent.

It’s merely a facade to praise and try to win me over.

‘It’s impossible to keep secrets in this small academy.’

Presumptuously, he is trying to cause a rift or slight misunderstanding between Luciana and me.

It seems he has valued our relationship at just a few gold coins, including the cost of keeping me quiet.

“Daimon has sent you such a letter.”

Naturally, the letter went to Luciana as a token of my loyalty.

A male lead candidate?

What does that matter?

I am always on Luciana’s side.

“Hmm. He called you, but left me out?”

“Yes.”

Luciana’s face hardened slightly.

Ignoring the master and enticing the servant is clearly a disrespect.

However, contrary to the expected fury, she ended it with a gentle sigh.

“That makes sense. Luke Daimon has always been reluctant to deal with me.”

“Is that so?”

“If we speak kindly, he is clever; if we speak bluntly, he is greedy. He demands so much despite having no resources from the north to offer. Tsk.”

Luciana clicked her tongue and stared at me intently.

“He probably won’t call me. He suggested a negotiation, but his plans have often gone awry with me.”

“…Um, may I ask what exactly happened?”

“Once, my father and the Duke Daimon entrusted Luke Daimon and me with negotiation authority.”

Luciana’s eyelids fluttered as she recalled that moment.

“Of course, it was a mock negotiation. It wasn’t a matter that mere ladies and young men could decide. But he said he’d raise the prices because the northern supply routes were disrupted by bandits and monster hordes. Thinking about it now, it really was a ridiculous excuse.”

The North, a barren land and yet, the front line against the demons.

Thus, it often received supplies at cheap prices from external regions.

Especially in terms of food resources.

“It’s outright robbery. So, how did you handle it?”

“If there’s a problem, just remove the cause. I immediately led the troops and cleared that area completely. You should have seen Daimon’s face then.”

That was a rather radical but ingenious solution typical of Luciana.

While scattering the remnants of thieves and monsters across the vast area would be ineffective, with overwhelming military force, it wasn’t impossible.

“Flipping an obviously disadvantageous situation and creating a structure favorable to oneself is also a tactic. You handled it well.”

“Ha ha, I got scolded by my father later, but your way of packaging your lord is exceptional.”

Luciana, after a burst of laughter, handed the letter back to me.

“One cannot repeat the same mistake twice. Go and see for yourself.”

“Are you saying I should respond to this summons?”

“Daimon wouldn’t call you without reason.”

I agreed with that.

The South, a region of commerce.

The heir of the dukedom representing it, Daimon, always translated everything into transactions.

Even in a game, facing a saintly character, if he gave something, he expected something in return to increase affection—a truly severe individual.

‘But in the latter half, he was a real honey pot.’

The wealth that he would pull out artifacts with just a word.

A character that perfectly melded a modern conglomerate heir with a capable division head…

“With your eloquence, you should be able to gain something from the conversation. Let’s repay the rudeness he has done to me gradually, and find out what he is hiding.”

“I understand.”

I was curious too.

Why this young master suddenly called me out.

“I will bring back something that will satisfy Lady Luciana.”

“Do not forget that the honor of the Speda family rests on you.”

With her declaration entrusting me with full negotiation authority, I nodded.

***

“How is it? Working under Luciana, your tea skills must have improved. I hope it’s to your taste.”

“A balance of nuttiness and freshness. These are leaves from the East. Excellent tea.”

While my tea brewing skills hadn’t improved under Luciana,

At least my ability to distinguish their flavors had certainly grown.

“This taste, it’s like my whole salary went into this one cup of tea.”

– Rene, do you know what carpet you’re standing on? It’s woven from the silk of jungle spiders from the south.

– Oh, I don’t know much about it, but it sounds incredibly precious, doesn’t it?

– Haha, it’s just a tool to enhance your beauty. Come, let’s enjoy the banquet and concert I’ve prepared.

Indeed, under the chandelier, a perennial top 3 candidate for the male lead.

Luke Daimon was known for his extraordinary wealth, effortless flirting, and his delicate personality which charmed many female players.

However, I’m not one to be overjoyed just because I drank expensive tea or received some gold coins.

Leave such things to women.

Of course, excluding Luciana, I’d rather it went to the saint.

“Thank you for this lavish hospitality. However, there must be a reason you’ve allowed me such expensive tea.”

Clever yet greedy.

I posed my question to the young master, who likely harbored a snake coiling in his belly.

Although outwardly hesitant,

He would understand.

No need for trivial talk, what’s the purpose of calling me?

“I’ve always felt, even at that social gathering, that you could represent Lady Speda well.”

Luke tossed his blond hair back, tilting his head.

His eyes, the same gold as his hair, scanned me sharply.

“Cut the small talk. I’ve come into some useful information and I’m thinking of selling it to you for the right price.”

“Information, you say?”

I barely suppressed a sneer.

Knowledge that pierced through the original game information.

And cross-verified through information coming from the chief of the thieves’ guild, Wolbaek.

I didn’t expect him to have information more valuable than what I already knew.

“I’m sorry, but that seems to be the least valuable thing to me. If that’s the main point, our conversation seems pointless.”

The previous attempts to sow discord between Luciana and me with money,

Had already established him firmly as an annoyance, and I responded curtly.

Rude?

I too had assumed full authority of the Speda family from Luciana.

While I must maintain courtesy, I should not lose dignity.

“Ah, don’t be so hasty. Alright, I’ll share the information first. You listen and then assess its value.”

However, his next words left me taken aback.

‘Not the reaction I expected.’

Not being angered or annoyed by my actions is one thing.

But paying later?

Luke, notorious for being a money-crazed demon?

There was only one instance in the game where this happened.

Specifically, when he was ‘investing.’

To him, money is not only the most important value but also a tool for generating more wealth.

It might become sincere later, but the initial onslaught of gifts towards the protagonist of the original game, Saint Rene, and even this tea I was drinking.

To him, these were merely ‘investments.’

“May I ask one question before you continue?”

“Of course, ask anything.”

“There are no gifts without a price. What are you expecting from me in exchange for this information?”

However, Luke’s investments were privileges only afforded to those showing potential for growth.

I was curious why I was being treated on par with the saint.

“Would you believe me if I said it’s just a simple interest?”

“……”

“But that is the truth. A baron’s son with third-place admission scores, a martial arts tournament champion, and most of all, your adept control of Luciana Speda at the social gathering. You’ve caught my attention.”

He pulled a letter from his pocket and tossed it.

The fluttering letter eventually landed in my hand.

“What is this?”

“It’s an invitation to a tea party from Countess Caspera.”

True to his word, the letter was sealed with the wax emblem of a dove, symbolizing the Caspera family.

“I hear she’s boldly plotting something against the Speda family and the North. You’ll find the details inside.”

“…Huh. I’m not adept at interacting with nobles from other regions. I had no idea such conversations were happening under the radar.”

It felt like being hit on the back of the head with a hammer.

‘Such a shameless sister.’

After being publicly humiliated by Professor Marks, I thought she would lay low for a while.

I never expected her to quickly rally her forces and retaliate so soon.

Even considering that Elizabeth, well-connected and also from the North, was excluded from this invitation…

Perhaps, without this interaction, I wouldn’t have noticed until much later.

“Thank you. I might have been entangled in their schemes unwittingly.”

“I’m glad it was helpful.”

But this transaction is unlikely to end here.

Luke is of the most prestigious merchant lineage in the empire, a member of the Daimon ducal family.

“So, what do you think? The value of my information?”

As such.

I nodded without hesitation.

“The value was indeed significant, immeasurable.”

“Then later, might you accommodate a ‘small favor’ for me?”

Instead of answering, I simply smiled.

‘Small favor? He’ll likely make unreasonable demands later.’

I absolutely should not get involved. Knowing how his elite troops are formed, I never wanted to start that.

Everything received from him ‘has its price’.

Otherwise, a small request could lead to larger demands, and even further to promises of great rewards or threats based on previous demands. Having seen this typical tactic of Luke’s in the game, my face instinctively scrunched up.

“No, since you provided valuable information, I should reciprocate with information.”

“Information, hmm. I’m not sure if it will be valuable to me, but let’s hear it.”

His tone clearly underestimated me, as if doubting that I, a mere baron’s son, could possess more significant information than he.

Of course, the information I received was invaluable at this early stage of establishing my footing.

“Just as before, you should judge the value of my information, Lord Daimon.”

“Alright. You speak so confidently, I’m intrigued. Go on.”

He spoke nonchalantly, clearly not expecting much.

But…

‘Is this guy possessed?’

“Surely, the emblem representing the Daimon ducal family was the conquered World Tree.”

The World Tree, a sacred site for elves, beastkin, and dwarves.

The Daimon ducal family had long ago allied with the dwarves to conquer it and turn it into a tourist spot.

“You’re well-informed. So, what about it?”

“Within a few years, a disaster will strike the World Tree.”

The disaster isn’t lurking in the North alone. The South, too, will soon face a significant crisis, as I predicted.

“What kind of nonsense are you spouting?”

“Have the leaves of the World Tree not recently begun to wither, and its roots to bruise?”

“How do you know that?”

I watched his surprised face and slightly twisted the corner of my mouth.

Still, Daimon did not point out my impoliteness. Rather, he couldn’t.

‘It’s natural since I’ve touched on a secret known only to a few in his family.’

While savoring the aroma of the tea, I whispered softly,

“You shouldn’t be meeting with the likes of me; rather, go meet the saint. She will be a great help in combating the disaster.”

I did not forget to introduce the saint to the male lead candidate, speechless from my remarks.

Eradicating a debt and tying the prince not to the saint but the male lead, thereby averting Luciana’s downfall.

Isn’t this killing two birds with one stone?

*Eeeek.*

“Are you finally coming out?”

As Eugene opened the front gate of his family home and stepped out, the eldest Aster Bedia, who was standing right next to the door, looked at Eugene and smiled gently.

“Have you been waiting for me?”

“Of course. If not, why else would I be standing here?”

“For what reason…?”

Swish.

In response to Eugene’s question, Aster took out a round object with a gem embedded in the center from his pocket and showed it to Eugene.

“It’s an artifact for you.”

The artifact that Aster showed Eugene contained the power of a spirit. Moreover, it held the power of a mid-level spirit, Sylph.

Spiritual artifacts, unlike magical ones, are not easy to come by, and their prices vary greatly depending on the power contained within them.

Even artifacts containing the power of low-level spirits are worth enough to easily buy three to four horses. For instance, an artifact with the power of the Fire Spirit King, Phoenix, was once sold for the price of a whole estate.

Although it was a small estate, it was still an estate, making the artifact very valuable.

Yet, the artifact Aster intended to give to Eugene contained the power of a mid-level spirit.

“Why would you give me something so precious…?”

Eugene looked at Aster with confusion. He knew how valuable artifacts were, thanks to his physical memory, making it quite puzzling that Aster would just hand over an artifact with the power of a mid-level spirit.

“I got it because I thought you might be lonely in that desolate hut.”

What does he mean? Why give an artifact for loneliness?

Eugene tilted his head in confusion and looked at the artifact in Aster’s hand.

‘Is it an Ego…?’

Ego. It refers to an object with self-awareness capable of communication like a person.

However, there was no mention in his memory of any artifact being an Ego.

“Could it be an Ego…?”

“It’s not an Ego. Or maybe… it could be?”

Whoosh.

Thud.

With some cryptic words, Aster threw the artifact towards Eugene.

“Are you really going to enroll in Landbard Academy?”

“Yes.”

“Although it’s been quite some time since I graduated, it must have changed a bit… still, it will be tough there.”

At Landbard Academy, the students advance each time they pass a test given by the academy. And graduation comes after passing all the tests.

“I’ll be fine.”

“…Alright. Endure it well.”

Aster, with a stern expression, told Eugene to endure it well. While he was proud of his younger brother Eugene for becoming confident and forming a circle, he couldn’t help but worry since Eugene decided to enroll in Landbard Academy.

Having graduated from Landbard himself, Aster knew how challenging it could be.

“You don’t need to worry about me.”

Eugene smiled softly at Aster, who was looking back at him. Although he was deeply grateful that Aster, who had shown no concern for him when he was neglected by the family, gave him an artifact and worried about him, Eugene was now a Heavenly Demon. He could endure without Aster’s worries.

“Alright, see you later.”

Eventually, Aster disappeared using teleportation.

Eeeek.

Eugene returned to his hut from his family home and took off his coat.

“Goodness… what a life.”

Seeing Taeje, who was sprawled out on the bed snoring, he couldn’t help but chuckle.

How could someone sleep so soundly and sprawled out like that?

Moreover, he continued to sleep soundly, oblivious to Eugene’s presence.

“I feel like splashing cold water on him.”

Of course, doing that would soak his bed completely.

Eugene put his coat in the closet and took out the artifact from the inner pocket.

“Hmm…”

Sitting on the chair in front of the bed, Eugene stared intently at the artifact. He knew it contained the power of a mid-level Wind Spirit, but what exactly did it do?

Typically, artifacts with the power of spirits are divided into three types:

– Offensive type, which attacks the opponent with the spirit’s power.

– Defensive type, which protects the user’s body with the spirit’s power.

– Support type, which enhances physical abilities or alters the terrain to aid the user.

Of these, offensive artifacts are the most expensive, but Eugene did not particularly need one.

Holding the artifact in one hand, Eugene began to chant the incantation to use it.

First, he needed to understand the power contained within the artifact.

“Operate.”

If anyone saw him, they might think he was out of his mind. Using an artifact inside the house was a crazy move. If it contained the power of a fire spirit, the entire house could turn into a sea of flames. Additionally, if the wind spirit artifact he had was of the offensive type, one side of the hut could be torn off.

However, Eugene wasn’t foolish and had considered this.

‘Judging by what my eldest brother said… it definitely wasn’t an offensive type.’

Who would give an offensive artifact to someone who seems to live alone in a hut? If the intent was to have him destroy things to avoid loneliness, then it might make sense, but Aster wasn’t that crazy. Even if it was an offensive type against expectations, Eugene could simply counter its power with his own.

Whirr.

As Eugene uttered the activation word, the round artifact began to emit a sky-blue light.

‘The light is sky-blue, so it really is a wind spirit’s power.’

At the moment he saw the light emanating from the artifact,

Boom!

A tremendous wind burst forth from the artifact, and a large, round light shot out from the gem embedded in its center.

“What… what’s going on?!”

Taeje, who had been sleeping on the bed, tumbled off due to the wind and frantically got up with one side of his hair pressed down.

“What is that?”

“No way…”

Eugene’s eyes shook slightly as he saw the round light. If his guess was correct, that light was…

Pop!

“Ah, finally, I’m out!”

As expected, it was a spirit, just as Eugene had predicted.

“Hmm? Aah! Who… who are you?”

“Oh…”

The mid-level spirit Sylph stretched and, seeing Eugene in front of him, was startled, while Eugene was so bewildered that he couldn’t even speak.

‘Not just an artifact with the spirit’s power, but an artifact containing the spirit itself?’

If his other siblings saw this, they would undoubtedly call Aster crazy. In fact, everyone in the family, including the head of the family, would probably think the same.

As mentioned earlier, artifacts containing a spirit’s power are considered precious. An artifact containing the power of a spirit king is valued as much as a small estate.

However, there is a special kind of artifact that is beyond pricing. It is an artifact containing an actual spirit, making it extremely easy to form a contract with the spirit. That is precisely what Eugene was holding.

Such artifacts have never been traded before. Forming a contract with a spirit is as difficult as plucking a star from the sky, so those who possess artifacts containing spirits use them rather than sell them.

Of course, it’s possible that spirit-containing artifacts are traded in the underground world, which he was unaware of, but to his knowledge, such artifacts have never been publicly traded.

‘And it’s a mid-level spirit…’

This was an overwhelmingly burdensome gift.

‘Receiving a small castle would be less burdensome than this…’

Why did his eldest brother give him such a rare artifact? Was it because they shared the same parent, Sasha Ariel? Or was it to encourage him, as he was being oppressed by the children of concubines within the family?

The reason was unclear.

The eldest, Aster Bedia, shared the same mother, Sasha Ariel, with Eugene but had no significant connection with him. Yet, after three years, he appeared and gave Eugene an artifact containing a spirit.

‘Of course, Brother Aster has already contracted with a high-level spirit…’

Eugene, feeling not entirely pleased, watched the Sylph looking around curiously.

“Sylph?”

“Yes?”

“Um… I’m the owner of this artifact.”

“Oh!”

Sylph’s face brightened, and he flew swiftly towards Eugene.

“You must be Eugene, whom Lord Aster mentioned.”

Sylph flew gracefully in front of Eugene, clearly familiar with him. This was because Aster had talked about Eugene to Sylph after obtaining him but before contracting with him.

“My brother talked about me?”

“Yes. He said the one to contract with me would be his younger brother, not himself…”

Hearing Sylph’s words, Eugene felt a surge of guilt.

‘The owner of this body died without knowing Aster’s love…’

The memories from just before this body died were filled with the belief that there was no one in the family who loved or cared for him. That was deeply painful. The soul that had once occupied this body had died thinking he was completely alone.

“Um… Contractor?”

“Just call me Eugene.”

“Oh, yes, Eugene. So, will you contract with me?”

“Yes.”

Eugene nodded at Sylph’s words, and Sylph closed his eyes and began chanting an incomprehensible incantation.

‘To contract with a mid-level spirit so easily…’

Now, Eugene understood why Aster had given him the artifact, fearing he might be lonely.

Eventually,

Whirr.

The light emanating from Sylph’s body began to merge into Eugene’s body.

‘It’s refreshing…’

Was it because it was a wind spirit? The light entering his body felt like a cool and pleasant breeze.

Whirr.

After all the light from Sylph had merged into Eugene, Sylph gently opened his eyes.

“With this, the contract between Eugene and me is complete. Once again, I introduce myself. I am Sylph, the mid-level wind spirit.”

“Nice to meet you! And…”

“What is this unknown energy inside you, Eugene? It feels close to pure magic…”

“Oh…?”

Eugene uttered an exclamation at Sylph’s words.

‘You can sense the internal energy but don’t know what it is…?’

Of course. A spirit that had felt only magic all its life wouldn’t know what internal energy was.

“Can this energy be used to summon you?”

Contracting with a spirit doesn’t just end with the contract.

Summoning a spirit and using it for attack and defense was entirely the responsibility of the contractor, the human. Therefore, sufficient magical energy was necessary to command the spirit.

“Yes. That unknown energy is also compatible with me as a spirit. That’s why it’s even more puzzling. Spirits normally only respond to magical energy or spiritual power… Oh, but Eugene, your energy is very similar to the energy that flows from the spirit realm. It’s very comfortable for me, almost like home!”

Sylph twirled around Eugene’s body, showing curiosity.

“I’ll explain later. For now, you can go back.”

“Yes. Then please call me again when you need me!”

“Sure.”

With that, Sylph promptly disappeared at Eugene’s words. Taeje, who had been watching the whole scene, continued to stare in a daze.

Strike 131

Prev I TOC I Next

At the headquarters of Blue Inc., Lee Se-jin breathed a small sigh of relief.

User Hyun-soo was harboring a wolf’s egg. This egg is special because the creature that hatches from it varies depending on the nutrient ratio. “Previously, user Hyun-soo had already surpassed a 50% nutrient ratio.” A 50% nutrient ratio results in the birth of a boss-level wolf. There is also a time limit to increase this nutrient ratio.

[213 hours 33 minutes 12 seconds remaining.]

Now, there are only 7 days left. The nutrient ratio is also linked to negotiation skills. Originally, the method to increase the nutrient ratio requires showing great power as a noble or a leader. Due to the negotiation skills Hyun-soo has developed over a short period, the total nutrient ratio has now reached this level.

[Nutrient Ratio 71%.]

It could certainly be considered an astonishing nutrient ratio. If 80% is achieved, the creature that hatches could be compared to the legendary monster Fenrir. However, Lee Se-jin was not worried about that.

“If the nutrient ratio exceeds 80%…” a divine beast might be born. Even surpassing 80% does not guarantee the birth of a divine beast. In fact, it might still be impossible even if it surpasses 90%. This is where the supercomputer Ares comes into play. Whether Ares will allow a divine beast to be born or not.

“However, to reach that level, we need to achieve a nutrient ratio high enough to surprise Ares.”

Therefore, when Hyun-soo’s negotiation skills doubled after reaching the POW camp, Lee Se-jin became anxious. But it seemed impossible.

“All the members of the Gale Squad were on the brink of death, and all the soldiers from the POW camp and the Cradle of Hell were killed.”

Conversely, about 60 enemies survived, and crucially, Kun was still alive.

Watching from across the screen, Lee Se-jin’s eyes widened at the sight of a sword being forged by Hyun-soo. Engraved in red on the blade as they cooled were the words:

“To die is to live (必生則死). To live is to die (必死則生)”

Lee Se-jin’s heart raced. Could there be anyone in Korea who doesn’t know these words?

“Admiral Yi Sun-sin…!”

Lee Se-jin captured the completed sword with a rapturous gaze. There are several types of swords associated with Yi Sun-sin, including a type called twin swords. The original twin swords consisted of two blades. One of these swords was as long as 2 meters and weighed over 5 kg. However, Lee Se-jin was puzzled by the sword that had been made.

“A single sword to win in such a desperate situation?” Then, Lee Se-jin suddenly stood up.

“For buffs!?”

Five members of the Gale Squad. All of them possessed the strength of level-290 knight-class warriors. The reason they were halted was due to being magic incompatibles. Considering their abilities alone, what would that mean? Most kingdoms possess numerous fiefs. In such large fiefs, there are outstanding heroes representing the region. These are essentially semi-named NPCs. A typical example could be something like the deity of swords.

Yes, the skills of the Gale Squad are indeed comparable to the deity of swords.

“What if those who cannot wield magic are endowed with the power to do so?”

They become beings that transcend themselves. However, what is incomprehensible is the buff capability embedded by the supercomputer Ares.

After all, a buff is the unique power of a particular job class. And Lee Se-jin realized.

To fight with the resolve to die is to live.

The Gale Squad members who ignite such spirit and will. And the single great sword that inherits such will. It was possible because of the great sword Hyun-soo made and the vassals who met it. Lee Se-jin revised his thoughts.

‘How far will the negotiation skills go?’

And how high will the nutrient ratio of the wolf’s egg go?

***

Vrooooom-!

Khan and the members of the Gale Squad seemed to hear this sound. Mana Heart, which requires magic. The sound of magic going berserk as their Mana Hearts, which have lived in bodies of despair unable to contain magic, are pierced.

Sssssss-

Steam rises from their bodies. The berserk magic starts at the toes and manifests as effects. Blue magic envelops their bodies and whirls around as the surroundings become tranquil. Their bodies restored, they walk forward.

[Even if it breaks.]

[You have found a breakthrough in a critical moment of crisis.]

[The effect of the completed artifact is enhanced by 8%.]

A great general in a small country. The single great sword crafted by their lord. They had hoped. Someday to be able to wield magic. Thus, they learned and practiced magic cultivation techniques they couldn’t even express.

“Hoooo.”

As they exhale, a powerful surge of blue magic is released. Behind them, they heard the voice of their lord.

“Sweep them away.”

Khan and the eyes of the Gale Squad members cool down. About sixty assassins are approaching in various positions. Even Khan alone is approached by about seven assassins. Kun furrowed his brow.

‘How could those who were dying?’

But it was too late. An assassin targeting his neck was already upon him. However, Khan’s wrist turned first, and his sword impaled the assassin.

Pshhhhh-

“Khah!”

At the tip of Khan’s sword, a privilege of knights that had never been realized in his lifetime. Aura begins to undulate. A power he thought he might never use even in death, learned over a lifetime. Dozens of genius members of the Gale Squad created it, and now only five have fully inherited it. All five manifest it simultaneously.

[Like flames.]

Like a flame that flares up and then vanishes, such is their power.

Whoooosh-

This is the tactical swordsmanship displayed together by the members of the Gale Squad. About 25 assassins are ensnared by their sword formation. The Gale Squad members cut them down with minimal movement and swift strikes.

Whoooosh-

The moment they shake off their swords, 25 assassins turn into ashes and scatter.

“……!?”

[15 seconds.]

[14 seconds.]

They too know that the emergency creation by their lord Hyun-soo has an activation time.

[Like a river.]

Like a flowing river, they cut through their enemies, advancing in a straight line. Their target is Kun. Kun unknowingly steps back. Like a beast waiting for its teeth to grow, they finally reveal their wild nature. Defenseless. Like leaves in a storm. Omnipresent. Their power, indescribable by words, astonishes Kun, the king of their group. Power is such a thing. Like one knight defeating more than ten soldiers.

[Assassin Becker Lv.278]

[Khan Lv.341]

Overwhelming power allows one to trample over many more. A straight line of force cuts down all the assassins in the vicinity.

Swoooosh-

As they pass, members of the enemy Black Dragon squad scatter.

[2 seconds.]

“Woooooo!”

Khan and the members of the Gale Squad, burning with determination, break through the defending Black Dragon squad, getting ever closer.

Boom, boom, boom!

Suddenly, they pierce the heart of the Black Dragon squad blocking their path.

Gulp-

Kun swallows dryly without realizing it. He was relieved.

Swoosh-

The great sword held by Hyun-soo disperses like a mere mirage. The swirling blue magic around them disappears.

“Huff, huff.”

Kun gasps for breath. Soon, they return to their original state. Kun, who counted how many they had killed, could not believe it. 50 members of the Black Dragon squad turned to ash.

***

[It is of Unique grade.]

The great sword of General Yi Sun-sin, hastily crafted by Hyun-soo, was unfortunately unique. Hyun-soo was concerned. Whether a unique artifact could change the tide of the battle. However, seeing the tremendous power displayed by the Gale Squad, he realized one thing.

‘With magic, they were as powerful as a thousand armies.’

[Negotiation level rises.]

[Negotiation level…]

[In a short period, the negotiation level has increased significantly.]

[The negotiation level will be consolidated and informed after all situations have ended.]

Hyun-soo couldn’t be entirely happy that his negotiation level had increased.

‘The negotiation level increased because many Black Dragon squad members were killed.’

Conversely, if all the prisoners died, that negotiation level could disappear again. However, Hyun-soo felt relieved.

‘Now it’s manageable.’

Only nine members of the Black Dragon squad and their leader Kun remained. With these numbers, the battle now had a chance of success.

Then.

[You have overcome the crisis and killed many Black Dragon squad members in a short time.]

[A new story will soon begin.]

Hyun-soo’s face twisted. A new story is a double-edged sword.

‘If successful, it offers great rewards.’

But with it comes dangerous crises. Hyun-soo couldn’t yet know what the current crisis would be.

‘If only he would come…’

Hyun-soo recalled someone he met before coming here. However, he quickly pushed the thought aside.

Swoosh-

Hyun-soo rushed at Kun. He couldn’t allow Kun to kill the Gale Squad members who had lost their magic.

“From now on, all members of the Gale Squad will lead the prisoners and escape!”

“Yes!”

Kun didn’t bother to stop the Gale Squad. His rage towards Hyun-soo was boiling over.

“Just because of one damn guy like you…!”

Both nations had approached a peace agreement. And all his subordinates at this location had died! Even so, Hyun-soo was just a person with insignificant power compared to Kun.

Clash, clash, clash-

An endless exchange ensued. The nine surviving assassins struck relentlessly, and Kun joined them.

[HP falls below 65%.]

[HP falls below 54%.]

Such an easily killable person had caused all this trouble. But no more could he use any cunning…

Then Hyun-soo’s eyes sparkled. He was not one to give up.

“Ghost Step.”

He unleashed the power that had just come off cooldown.

Crack-

Kun saw it. Two to his left. Two above Hyun-soo. Three behind Hyun-soo. And one last time at himself.

Ting-!

Kun’s anger surged as he blocked the sword strike. In an instant, seven of his men sprayed blood and lunged at him.

“Ee, eek…!”

Sssk

Even now, as Hyun-soo fought like a cockroach that wouldn’t die, a light glinted on Kun’s dagger. A mystical power imbued Kun’s dagger as it pierced Hyun-soo’s chest precisely twelve times, five in rapid succession.

Puff, puff, puff, puff-

Blood spurted from his body.

Hyun-soo, kneeling with both knees on the ground and clutching his wrists, glared at Kun as he gasped for breath.

‘I want to give this bastard despair… this damned guy…’

Soon, Kun was enveloped in ecstasy. He saw figures emerging from all around the hill.

Whizz—

An arrow flew and pierced one of the prisoners.

“Kheuack!”

Murderer Guild.

Mostly composed of archers, the members of the Red Bandana Guild had arrived. Their arrows, fired by high-level unsportsmanlike players, rained down on the prisoners.

Whoosh Whoosh Whoosh—

“Screaaam!”

“Ugh, aargh!”

“Ack!”

“Ugh!”

The prisoners were massacred.

The Gale Squad members were helpless against the barrage of arrows fired from various points.

From the hills and horizon, archers stood in their positions, ideally suited for a massacre.

“Look.”

Kun, holding his wrists and with bloodshot eyes, spoke to Hyun-soo. “You’ve lost.”

[Blood vessels are pressed.]

[You are stunned for 4 seconds.]

Kun, having briefly stunned him by pressing a blood vessel, wanted Hyun-soo to watch this slaughter and despair.

At the same time, all members of the Murderer Guild pulled their bowstrings towards the sky.

They activated skills like Double Shot or Triple Shot.

Along with it.

Chachachachachacha—

Hundreds of arrows were fired into the sky, arching in parabolas.

Arrows rained down indiscriminately on children, women, old men, and men.

“Waaaah!”

Amidst the crying of a child, Kun exulted.

Then.

“No, I haven’t lost.”

Hyun-soo smiled.

Kun could not understand that smile.

That moment.

[The emergence of a legend above legends!]

Beep—

Kun felt an inexplicable ringing in his ears.

He staggered back, shaking his head vigorously to regain his senses.

Soon, having recovered, he saw the hundreds of arrows raining down from the sky.

Whizz—

Then, a single arrow appeared from somewhere. The moment this single arrow entered among the hundreds, a massive flame ignited.

Whooooosh—

All hundred arrows were engulfed in flames.

Kun, stepping back, soon looked into the distance.

His senses caught a man standing far away.

Click—

He inserted an arrow into an unidentified bamboo tube.

‘A crossbow?’

He loaded an arrow onto a white bowstring.

Kun scoffed at him. The distance between them was a whopping 500 meters.

An arrow could never cover a distance of 500 meters to reach here.

That instant.

Swoooosh—

It happened in the blink of an eye.

An arrow struck directly into his chest.

Whooosh—

“Khaaaack!”

Kun was sent flying about 12 meters back.

And then, a notification reached Hyun-soo.

[Ian has joined the Guild Bright Future.]

Act 76

Prev I TOC I Next

“Thank you for your cooperation, Sir Pintel. I will take my leave now.”

With a brief farewell, Julian left the audience chamber with the anonymous members of his group.

A solemn silence settled in, and Pintel, unable to withstand the atmosphere, also hurried out of the room.

‘I’ve become a monster.’

As he walked away, Pintel reflected on the situation.

As a noble of the Adratan Empire, he remembered most of the paths Julian had taken so far.

Though only half, a body with noble blood flowing through it. A stupid trash who became a dog of the empire as an ‘executioner’ without proving the usefulness of that blood.

It should have been like that.

‘Where did that previous atmosphere go…’

When Julian called him to this place, Pintel had not heard any story.

However, the moment he stood in his place, his intuition fiercely whispered to him.

That he could choke the despicable life out of Gerard with just one word.

‘Since that day, we haven’t spoken a word, but Julian understood what was in my heart.’

Certainly, the previous ‘Julian’ would have been displeased.

To utilize the current situation to ensure Gerard is stripped of his position.

The only guy who would understand his feelings had disgracefully turned into the dog of the royal family.

But now, it was different.

‘This guy… No, Sir Julian…’

Pintel thought that the thoughts he now harbored might be blasphemous.

However, the murky flow in his mind began to erode the hardened thoughts.

And it became a resolution.

‘He fits as an Archbishop of the Dawn Society.’

Thinking this, Pintel continued to walk.

***

“Where is the Black Knight?”

As we walked out of the audience chamber and down the corridor, Meyer spoke up.

Her voice sounded annoyed, but she was still terrified.

The color of ‘fear’ visible above her head proved it.

“What will you do if you find him?”

Yeah, what will you do?

Even if he is right in front of you, you won’t believe it.

“I want to thank him. For creating an opportunity for me to avenge my brother Baran.”

“Then I will pass the message.”

“…I don’t want that.”

It’s hard to understand why not.

“I want to talk to him directly. And I have something to ask.”

“What is it?”

“Why should I tell you?”

Because the person you are so desperately looking for is me.

“Use the communicator. Didn’t he give it to you?”

“…He told me not to initiate contact.”

How annoying.

Still, it was somewhat admirable to see her keeping promises, rough as her manner was.

“Tell him I want to meet. If you won’t, I’ll let the royal family know what you’ve been up to right now…Aaah!”

As I went to remove Meyer’s mask, her emerald eyes were revealed.

“Know your place.”

When she spoke as if snapping at him, Meyer flinched.

But that was only for a moment; her eyes sharpened.

“Subject? I have your weakness in my grasp right now! If you’re not stupid, you’d know what will happen to you if this leaks to the imperial court… Ugh.”

I covered Meyer’s mouth with my hand.

“Hey, shut up, you crazy woman! Although I appreciate your concern, are you really okay? Do you know why I asked for your help?”

Saying this, I stared intently at Meyer.

Her pride was strong, but she was not someone who could accept favors without repaying them.

“Because of the favor I owe the Black Knight, I won’t tell anyone about what happened today… Ugh.”

Meyer seemed to be hit by this, groaning.

“Huh? Why all of a sudden?”

“That’s right… You think that someone like me, from the slums, if I disappear without a trace, no one would care, right?”

…Conflict.

No.

I truly said it out of concern.

But I vaguely realized from many experiences that ‘appearance matters.’

Even if it becomes familiar, the meaning changes if those sly eyes say it.

“As you think, I won’t say anything. But it’s not because I’m afraid of you!”

Meyer opened her mouth, trembling.

It seemed not.

“Because I have a connection with the Black Knight, I keep quiet. Unlike you… he’s trustworthy!”

While listening, I couldn’t help but chuckle.

“What’s so funny!?”

My chuckle sounded like scoffing to Meyer, who got angry and raised her voice.

It’s not funny at all.

Currently, I was doing my best to act as Julian-like as possible, trying not to kill as much as I could.

Of course, this alone won’t erase the infamy this demonic creature has built up, but still, to trust someone who wears a mask and hides his identity more than this, isn’t that ridiculous?

“It’s funny that you trust someone who wears a mask and hides their identity. It’s something a child would think.”

“He’s much better than you!”

“In what way?”

Startled by my words, Meyer thought for a moment and then spoke.

“For one, he’s cool.”

I was slightly taken aback by the unexpected comment.

“How can you say he’s cool if you’ve never seen his face under the mask?”

“I don’t need to see his face to know. Unlike a guy like you, his eyes aren’t sly!”

Somewhat embarrassing.

“And even though I don’t know his identity, there’s something about him that’s trustworthy.”

Is that so? Well, I guess so.

“I don’t know why I’m cooperating with someone like you whose intentions I can’t understand, but… still! You’re different!”

“Is that so?”

“Right!” The confidence in her voice was palpable.

Her attitude was so amusing that… ‘What if I told her I’m the Black Knight?’

…the words almost escaped my lips, but I decided against doing something so foolish.

***

Upon returning to the mansion, I went to the bathroom to wash up.

When I first entered Tenellon’s secret chamber, I was sweating and felt unpleasant, but looking back, it seems I was only nervous at the beginning and became indifferent as time passed.

“Lord Julian, what would you like to do for dinner?”

As I was drying off after stepping out of the bathroom, a maid approached and asked politely.

“Please prepare it.”

It seemed time had passed, as I was feeling quite hungry.

After instructing the servant, I dried off and headed to the dining room.

The appetizer was a bread topped with ground mushrooms and cheese, followed by shrimp and herbs that were easy to pop into one’s mouth.

…I had told the chef to reduce the number of appetizers before.

I had mentioned it to the chef before that there was too much food before the main course. It might be a rule set by ‘Julian’ who likes to indulge, but since I didn’t particularly like it, I had told him to reduce the quantity.

‘It seems the chef got quite the scolding.’

Julian’ whimsical nature had often harried the chef, and it seems because of this, the current rules weren’t easily changed.

‘Maybe, is this a test?’

I remember having such a thought to myself.

“This is veal that has been aged in beeswax for seven months,” the chef said as he wheeled the cart over and served the food.

He explained what the meat was and how it was prepared.

“Due to the lack of gaminess in veal, it has been enhanced with a special marinade to suit Lord Julian’ taste.”

“Is that so?”

“Ye..s.”

Although I am not a gourmet, the way the chef nervously explained it piqued my interest.

I’ve always thought that food is ultimately energy. I consider calories to be the measure of food’s quality.

“Let’s have a taste then.”

I took up a fork and knife, cut the meat, and put it in my mouth.

As the chef said, the meat lacked gaminess, but the flavors of herbs and butter intensely filled my taste buds.

The rough marinade and the tender veal created a harmonious blend.

Hmm, quite appealing, isn’t it?

“Does it suit your taste?”

“…It’s good.”

A flush of color came to the chef’s face.

“Is there more?”

Pointing with my finger to the plate, indicating my liking, the chef’s smile became even more pronounced.

“Yes, of course!”

“Then, about ten bowls of the same.”

Given my immense physical capabilities, my body requires a lot of calories.

Especially after mastering ‘Sombra’, I’ve felt more sensitive to hunger.

“Yes, yes…!?”

“I was quite hungry, that’s why. I think I need to eat a bit more.”

The chef’s eyes, unsteady and unable to find a focus.

Soon, as if he had made up his mind, he nodded.

“I will prepare something no matter what.”

“Oh, if it’s too much trouble, something else will do.”

“No! Please let me do this!”

His tone carried a sense of determination.

Did he take this as some kind of test?

I was about to dissuade him out of concern, but the chef hurried out of the dining room with urgent steps.

‘If it’s too hard, he’ll stop on his own.’

I moved my fork again.

As my empty stomach gradually filled, thoughts began to flood my mind.

Gérard had been dealt with more quickly than the original story.

Now, how to handle the impending backlash.

‘Now that we’re here?’

What to do by adding ‘originally’ to a story already turned topsy-turvy.

‘Yes, even my mastering Sombra, and the fact that the Sword Saint abandoned the role of the Black Knight, all were unexpected.’

From here on, it’s important to handle what comes next well.

“Lord Julian! I’m sorry to interrupt your meal, but… a guest has arrived!”

Just as I was steadying my heart, the servant’s urgent voice snapped me to attention.

I looked at the servant intently.

Fear was evident, but he had to speak, even if I was in the middle of dining.

Seeing his urgency, it must be an important guest.

“Who is it?”

“It’s, it’s Lord Oben Crypart.”

Oben, Oben…

As I chewed over the name, I stopped my moving fork.

It was the name of the head of the Crypart family.

At the same time…

“Father…?”

No, Julian’s father.

“Ah, I’ll bring him in.”

My muttering was taken as affirmation, and the servant bowed quickly and rushed to the entrance.

‘Why at my mansion?’

It was odd.

Wasn’t ‘Julian’ disowned by the Crypart family?

Why would the head of the family come to see me himself?

Thinking about it, the reason came to mind.

-If the head himself comes, I might make time even in my busy schedule.

Had my words turned into a prophecy?

Surely, he wouldn’t really come to meet, would he!

Disturbed, I stopped eating and rose from my seat as I heard approaching footsteps.

This isn’t about the veal!

Such a scenario was never in any game.

That the head of the Crypart family would come to see ‘Julian’.

I must handle this well.

A word from him could change Julian’s story.

Even if the visitor was the head of the Crypart family and could freely decide the fate of the collateral branches, I just had to get through this.

“Lord Julian, Lord Oben has arrived.”

So, like others.

No, since it’s the head, maybe a slight bow would be appropriate.

Though branded ‘Frason’, I’m still a member of the Crypart family.

“Were you dining? It’s been a while, Julian.”

A man with a clean impression entered the dining room.

Julian and he shared a slightly similar appearance, but apart from the narrow eyes, they somehow looked like father and son.

Seemingly in a cordial mood, he extended his hand.

“Yes, it’s been a long time, my lord.”

Next… would be to offer a handshake?

I gently extended my hand and clasped his.

I was doing well.

Relieved by a reaction that was better than expected, I was comforting myself when suddenly,

“Why did you not attend the family meeting? If you had been there, I personally would have… Aaargh…!”

I had overlooked something.

‘Julian’ harbors an intense hatred for Crypart’s head, his father ‘Oben’.

Julian’s’ body reacted with all its might, almost breaking ‘Oben’s’ hand with the force exerted.

He was even about to use his aura… I stopped him.

I’m sorry, Oben.

It really wasn’t my intention.

Black Dragon squad Leader Kun.

He was watching everything from a hilltop where the prisoner-of-war camp was visible. When five soldiers of unknown strong power faced a deadly crisis, Kun noticed Hyun-soo coming towards them in a brown coat.

A decisive factor in bringing peace between two nations.

When he controlled the entire 70 members of the Black Dragon squad with telekinesis, he was impressed in a small way. However, Kun mocked him.

‘He is floundering.’

Endlessly foolish.

Being a blacksmith, does he not know the basic elements of combat?

The grape that he put in his mouth. It must have been a precious grape grown from the Minor World Tree.

‘It should have been applied to an offensive skill.’

At that thought, a pitiful arrow was created around him.

Watching his subordinates, he flicked his coat and suddenly aimed at the sky, placing an arrow on the bowstring.

“The end.”

That arrogant and absurd voice.

As he shot the arrow and turned to walk towards his subordinates, that’s when Kun saw it.

A single arrow turned into about seventy arrows hitting the Black Dragon squad members.

However, the damage from these arrows was pitifully low.

But soon, as if a 1,000 kg weight was attached to their ankles.

Like a bomb, they crashed to the ground.

Kwa-kwa-kwa-kwa-kwa-kwa-kwa-kwa-kwang-

Around Hyun-soo, who was walking towards his subordinates, about 70 members of the Black Dragon squad rained down from every direction.

Each time they struck, the ground heavily cratered, and dust clouds rose thickly.

The dust momentarily obscured Kun’s vision, and when it finally cleared, Kun was horrified.

All 70 members of the Black Dragon squad were writhing on the ground.

“Arghhh…!”

“Gahhh…!”

“Ughhh…!”

Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

But he knew their HP had dropped by nearly 40% from this single attack.

Even if they didn’t die, receiving such a strong impact in one go usually results in unconsciousness.

Several were foaming at the mouth and had passed out.

“……!”

Kun was shocked.

‘Did he find the most efficient way to attack in that short time?’

He is no ordinary person.

However, Kun soon saw the Black Dragon squad members raising themselves with a high degree of mental strength.

Even so, Hyun-soo is doomed to die here.

Except for him, essentially, most of the forces were incapacitated.

“1 vs 70?”

Soon Kun chuckled.

“No, soon it will be 1 vs 110.”

Black Dragon squad Leader Kun was a proactive man.

He plans for contingencies in advance.

70 members of the Black Dragon squad.

He thinks this number is sufficient.

However, just in case, he really prepared for a contingency.

Among the foreigners in this land, there is a group that will do anything for money.

The Murderer Guild.

Among them, the Red Bandana Guild consisted of high-level, ill-mannered guild members, with about 90% being archers. They were typically deployed in massacres because they could kill the most people in the shortest amount of time by quickly drawing their bows. Kun had hired them with money, and soon they would arrive here. Of course, Kun anticipated that Hyun-soo and his soldiers would all be dead before their arrival. The Black Dragon squad members were his valuable subordinates after all.

Kun descended the hill and quickly moved towards the camp.

***

Khan and the members of the Gale Squad couldn’t believe the scene before their eyes. Seventy assassins were embedded in the ground. Their Lord had given each one of them a potion to drink, which restored only about 15% of their health. It was barely enough to breathe life into those dying. Assassins with one or another broken part in their bodies were rising from the ground.

Grunt

Crack

They set their own dislocated bones. Then, all seventy surged at once. They stormed from all directions, targeting only Hyun-soo.

Pip, pipipipit-!

Wounds quickly multiplied on Hyun-soo’s body. Khan and his members intervened to lessen the damage as much as they could. And Khan knew. If he remembered his lord correctly, he wouldn’t last long. In that moment, eight assassins charged at Hyun-soo from all directions.

“Lord…!”

Khan’s head spun, knowing his lord would be instantly killed if attacked from those eight directions.

‘What…!?’

A chill ran down his spine. Khan finally realized. It had been almost a month since he last saw his lord’s strength, except when fighting giants in the realm of Arham. But that month was merely a brief moment in time.

Suddenly.

“Ghost Step.”

In a fleeting moment, Hyun-soo moved among the assassins gathered around him like a ghost. With every move, his afterimages were etched into the air.

Craaaack

Thump!

Sssshhh

Crack!

Whooshuck

Bang

Crack

Bang-!

Exactly eight assassins.

In 1.4 seconds, eight assassins were slashed, broken, and slaughtered.

Moreover.

Keiiiiing-

The sword he wielded moaned as blood spurted from the bodies of other assassins emerging elsewhere.

Whooshooshooshooshuck-

Blood gushed out.

Flurrruck-

With his coat fluttering, Hyun-soo moved freely across the battlefield. At times he seemed like a Sword King, at other times like the Spear Heaven.

Pwhaaaaack-

As he slashed down another assassin, his eyes bore an arrogant gleam.

At this moment, Khan and the members of the Gale Squad realized.

‘…Have we not seen him grow endlessly even in moments unseen?’

At that moment.

“Ultimate Kill.”

In an instant.

Leaving a trail of dark energy, Kun forcefully plunged a dagger into Hyun-soo’s solar plexus.

[Ultimate Kill]

[Automatically reduces HP by 80%.]

[Afflicted with bleeding status.]

“Kugh!”

Hyun-soo staggered.

He saw Kun, the man who had thrust the dagger into his solar plexus and then swiftly withdrew it.

[Black Dragon squad Leader Kun Lv.351]

“It’s all because of you. You and your subordinates will be the last ones I kill.”

Kun vanished in an instant.

He reappeared just 12 meters away and began a massacre among the soldiers of the camp.

In the blink of an eye, he slaughtered all the soldiers and moved on to slay the soldiers of Cradle of Hell as well.

[All camp soldiers have fallen.]

[A significant number of Cradle of Hell soldiers have perished.]

Hyun-soo felt dizzy as if his vision was blurring.

‘Reduce HP by 80% in one go?’

His condition made it difficult to keep his eyes open due to the abnormal status effects.

Hyun-soo, with a body intermittently trembling, hurriedly placed a grape from the Minor World Tree into his mouth.

[HP and MP are instantly recovered by about 60%.]

Although his HP replenished, Hyun-soo realized:

‘There is no chance of winning.’

He had managed to kill only about 10 of the 70 assassins.

Hyun-soo recalled the notifications he heard each time he killed one of the assassins.

[Negotiation skill increases.]

[Negotiation skill increases.]

[Negotiation skill…]

The death of the assassins was linked to a doubling of negotiation skills.

But more importantly.

‘I will lose all the members of the Gale Squad.’

Hyun-soo took in the sight of his men struggling against the overwhelming Black Dragon squad.

Even if they might be considered NPCs, they were precious people who were absolutely necessary for the Bright Future.

Then, Khan, nearly dead, approached him.

“Tear up the return scroll quickly.”

“…I can resurrect even if I die.”

Hyun-soo looked at Khan with incomprehensible eyes.

Khan knew he could be resurrected.

But why was he so insistent on his safety?

Moreover, Hyun-soo had heard a notification upon arriving here.

[Vassal Khan has surpassed his limits.]

[Vassal Berum has surpassed his limits.]

[Vassal Pelo has surpassed his limits.]

They had repeatedly overcome their physical and mental limits.

It would not be strange if they died.

Also, from the achievements in Cradle of Hell, Hyun-soo knew they had done their best.

Khan choked up.

“Lord, we are willing to die to protect you. The saddest thing now is that we could not protect you.”

Hyun-soo’s lips parted.

And though Hyun-soo did not understand, he was touched by the loyalty of Khan and the Gale Squad members.

The day the Gale Squad members arrived at Hyun’s forge, Nel had said:

“We’ve secured a room at the inn. For now, you will stay there.”

Her words, spoken as she conducted the minister’s duties, were cold.

But the Gale Squad members were satisfied.

Raised by the state and discarded by nobles, they had never known warmth growing up.

To them, even this was more than they could ask for.

Then Hyun-soo, who was a blacksmith, said:

“I will give you money, please find a big house for them to live in.”

“Hyun-soo, you haven’t even paid off your own hospital bills yet, how can you afford this…”

“Please do it, I now have confidence. At least the confidence to protect my own people.”

Hyun-soo, who had once said those words, smiled at them now.

“I am frustrated. It’s despairing that we want to protect but can’t protect ourselves right now. Our wretched bodies!”

Hyun-soo knew.

They were born with bodies that were maladapted to magic.

And even in moments of imminent death and inevitable defeat, they burned with willpower.

Suddenly, something flashed through Hyun-soo’s mind.

“Thank you, Khan.”

[All soldiers of Cradle of Hell have fallen.]

Only five allies remained.

Apart from the Gale Squad members, everyone else had perished.

Hyun-soo saw Kun and the assassins coming towards them again.

Khan couldn’t understand.

“Thank you?”

Hyun-soo smiled slightly and patted his shoulder.

“You have inspired me.”

Minerals surged up beside Hyun-soo.

Khan and the Gale Squad members staggered but positioned themselves in front of him.

Kun stood at the center of about sixty assassins.

He flicked his finger.

Khan saw sixty assassins advancing simultaneously.

Above Hyun-soo, a massive blade was formed.

The red-hot blade.

The massive blade merged with a handle.

Hyun-soo passed them and faced the enemies, saying,

“There was a great general in a small country.”

Khan and the Gale Squad members took in the weapon he had created.

Suddenly, a mysterious great sword descended to him.

“The enemy nation was far stronger, and the king felt the defeat in the war.”

Hyun-soo grasped the vertically descending sword with both hands.

Creeeak-

He boldly displayed the blade side to the enemies.

“The king of the small country knew.”

Characters filled the blade.

[To die is to live (必生則死)]

[To live is to die (必死則生)]

“We were defeated, but the small country, the great general said.”

Hyun-soo pulled the sword back with all his might.

At that moment.

Thump

Thump

Thump

All five members of the Gale Squad felt an unknown power surging within them.

A power warm like a mother, yet sometimes fiercely pulsating. And that great general Hyun-soo admired.

“There are still…”

Hyun-soo swung the sword he had pulled back with all his force forward.

Sssshhhh-

“Five vassals remaining.”

[Activation of To die is to live.]

[Magical power surges within the body.]

[HP is restored to 50%.]

“Stone Hold.”

Crash!

As Antonio chanted the spell while moving his wand, the floor of the training ground quickly rose and covered Eugene’s feet.

Whoosh.

However, Eugene quickly pulled his internal energy from his dantian and dashed forward.

‘It’s just a low-level movement technique, but it’s enough for you.’

Eugene evaded Antonio’s attack with a feather-light body.

“Hmm.”

Alan squinted his eyes as he watched Eugene’s movement.

Alan had expected Eugene to respond with magic like Antonio, but instead, Eugene was avoiding Antonio’s magic with swift movements.

“Is it the Strengthen spell?”

The eldest, Aster, who had been quietly observing Eugene, approached Alan.

“Does it look that way to you too?”

“Yes, Eugene has good sense.”

Aster smiled as he watched Eugene swiftly dodging Antonio’s attacks.

The 1st Circle spell to strengthen the body, Strengthen.

It was often used by wizards who lacked physical abilities, unlike knights.

It was a spell used more for retreating or in unstable combat situations rather than for attacking.

However, to Alan and Aster, it appeared that Eugene was using the Strengthen spell to dodge Antonio’s attacks and wear him out.

And their judgment was correct.

Eugene was steadily depleting Antonio’s strength without approaching him, using his movement technique.

‘Antonio is good at magic linkage, so if I get close, he’ll do something.’

Therefore, Eugene’s strategy was to move swiftly and drain Antonio’s energy.

In fact, Eugene had discovered Antonio’s strength a little earlier.

Before coming to the training ground, he had overheard Joel, the second eldest, giving Antonio some advice from the back.

‘You’re good at linking magic, so if someone approaches while you’re attacking, immediately respond with another spell.’

That was Joel’s advice to Antonio.

Of course, Eugene, with his enhanced physical abilities, sight, and hearing, had seen and heard everything clearly.

“But did the youngest also use the Haste spell?”

Aster tilted his head, noticing Eugene’s speed.

While the Strengthen spell did enhance physical strength and speed, Eugene was moving faster than what the Strengthen spell alone could achieve.

This indicated that Eugene had also cast another spell, Haste, on himself.

“This… damn rat… moving around like that…”

“Pfft, try to hit me properly.”

“Argh!”

Eugene’s mocking laughter seemed to have infuriated Antonio, causing veins to pop on his forehead.

Hmm.

Antonio, who normally wouldn’t react to such a light provocation, immediately responded to Eugene’s taunt.

And thus began Antonio’s barrage of spells.

“Lighthein!”

Zap.

Zap.

Boom!

“Lighthein!!”

Boom!

Antonio kept casting the lightning spell, Lighthein, which consumed a lot of mana, aiming directly at Eugene’s head.

“Oh dear, what a fool…”

Aster sighed as he observed Antonio’s reaction next to Alan.

Falling for such a light provocation and recklessly casting a mana-consuming spell was a grave mistake.

If this were a war or a battle with another family, such actions would be disastrous.

And he was surprised.

‘Is the youngest really fighting like that…?’

The youngest, who had just reached the 1st Circle, was already leading a skilled battle.

He provoked Antonio to exhaust his energy and avoided close combat, using minimal strength.

Moreover, he prevented Antonio from using his strength in magic linkage by angering him.

Provoking in battle is a basic tactic.

Provocation narrows one’s vision and shortens one’s thinking.

“What… what am I even seeing…”

Antonio’s eyes began to shake wildly as he bit his teeth and cast spells while Eugene swiftly dodged a bolt of lightning.

Lighthein’s power and speed varied depending on the amount of mana, but it wasn’t something a 1st Circle wizard like Eugene could dodge so easily.

After all, even if it wasn’t naturally occurring, lightning was still lightning.

Yet, Eugene was dodging the extremely fast lightning bolts with ease.

“Wi… Wind.”

Buzz.

Bang!

“What?!”

Antonio attempted to use wind magic to push away the approaching Eugene, but his spell calculation got tangled, causing the magic to fail.

Moreover, the disruption in his chanting caused the mana to backfire, momentarily paralyzing Antonio.

‘Now.’

Whoosh!

Eugene seized the opportunity and swiftly closed the distance, appearing right in front of Antonio in an instant.

‘Vajra Fist (金剛拳).’

Hum.

Thud!

Eugene delivered a powerful punch, using the Vajra Fist technique of the Shaolin Temple, to Antonio’s stomach.

Though his mastery was not perfect, it was powerful enough to bring down Antonio.

“Hmm?”

However, Eugene frowned upon seeing an opaque barrier blocking his fist.

It was undoubtedly a shield spell, but Antonio shouldn’t have been able to cast magic due to the mana backlash.

“That’s enough.”

Aster intervened, stopping the duel between Antonio and Eugene.

The shield that blocked Eugene’s punch was cast by Aster.

“Eugene, you won.”

“…Thank you.”

Eugene quietly bowed his head to Alan and Aster before slowly descending from the training ground.

Step by step,

“You did well too.”

Aster climbed up to the training ground after Eugene had descended, and he acknowledged Antonio, who was trembling with his whole body.

While Eugene had been depleting Antonio’s strength without recklessly approaching him, Aster had thought Eugene wouldn’t lose easily.

However, he hadn’t expected Eugene to actually win, which is why he had gone up to console Antonio.

“Hmm?”

And then Aster noticed something.

‘Haha…’

There was a crack in the shield he had cast.

Swoosh.

‘Even though I made it thin…’

His shield, which he had made thin, had cracked from a single punch.

And it was done by a mere 1st Circle magician.

Even a 2nd rank knight’s sword could be blocked by his shield, no matter how thin.

Yet, a mere 15-year-old’s punch had cracked it.

‘What kind of changes have you gone through in the past three years…?’

Aster smiled with a face full of amusement.

“Now I can enroll in Landbard Academy, right?”

“…Yes.”

When Eugene confidently approached his father, Alan, and brought up his enrollment in Landbard Academy, Alan finally nodded.

“That fool.”

Among the dazed brothers, Joel regained his senses and cursed Antonio, who still hadn’t come down from the training ground.

No matter how careless, losing to someone like Eugene, who he considered a fool, was unacceptable.

“Hmph.”

Joel immediately turned around and left the training ground.

Squeak.

Click.

“You’ve worked hard.”

6th floor, head’s room.

Alan and Eugene were alone in Alan’s room, and Alan told Eugene once again that he had worked hard.

“It was nothing.”

“However…”

“Why don’t I sense any mana from you?”

Alan asked Eugene in a quiet tone.

From the beginning until now, Alan hadn’t felt any mana from Eugene.

At first, he thought Eugene might be using magic unknowingly.

But even while watching with his own eyes, he couldn’t sense any mana from Eugene.

“Is what you used really magic?”

Alan spoke to Eugene with a slight sense of pressure.

Though weak, it was still a pressure that could feel heavy to the young Eugene.

However, Eugene met Alan’s gaze directly without any change in his expression.

“It is magic.”

“Then why…?”

“But.”

Eugene cut Alan off, which could be considered rude, and continued his words.

“Since I formed the 1st Circle, I haven’t felt any mana.”

“What nonsense… hmm?!”

Alan, initially taken aback by Eugene’s words, soon frowned as if he had realized something.

‘Could it be…?’

Alan’s eyes subtly trembled as he recalled Keron Bedia, the founding ancestor of the Bedia family.

Keron Bedia, who ascended to the rank of master magician in Seifran 1,800 years ago and established the Bedia family.

There was one unique characteristic about Keron Bedia:

No mana could be sensed from him.

It was said that even while using magic beyond the 12th Circle, not a trace of mana could be detected.

‘Could it be that Eugene…?’

Alan looked at Eugene, trying to calm his wildly beating heart.

No matter how much he thought about it, when he recalled Eugene’s words and his performance in the duel, he was reminded of the ancestor.

The movements reminiscent of a knight and the complete absence of mana, even to someone at the 10th Circle like himself.

‘Did it go over well?’

Eugene looked at the silent Alan, unaware of his inner thoughts.

In fact, Eugene knew about Keron Bedia’s unique characteristic.

Rather, he had come to know it thanks to his body’s memories, and he had used the ancestor as an excuse to explain why no mana could be felt from him.

‘It’s a stroke of luck that the old man had such a characteristic…’

If it weren’t for that, his excuse would have been nonsense.

He had no intention of hiding his power.

However, since he couldn’t call his abilities magic or aura, he had to come up with an excuse.

“I understand. You’ve worked hard today. Return to the cabin, and I’ll send someone soon.”

“Yes.”

Eugene gave a soft smile, bowed to Alan, and left his room.

‘Things are going according to plan.’

As Eugene descended the stairs from his father’s room, he mentally reviewed the materials he needed to gather.

At that moment,

Thud, thud, thud.

Someone quickly ran up and grabbed Eugene by the shoulder.

“You… have another duel with me.”

It was Antonio Bedia.

Despite the shock and the departure of the brothers from the training ground, Antonio had remained there.

He had finally collected himself and came to find Eugene.

“I… I underestimated you too much. I apologize for that… so, let’s have another…”

Swoosh.

Since Antonio approached from the central staircase of the main house, Eugene was above him.

Eugene bent down without a word, bringing his face close to Antonio’s ear.

“What difference would another fight make?”

“You…?”

“Don’t be mistaken, it’s not you who underestimated me, but I who underestimated you.”

Eugene whispered quietly into Antonio’s ear before straightening up and looking down at him.

Apologize for underestimating me?

How laughable.

It was he who underestimated Antonio.

Who was underestimating whom?

From the start, Eugene had disregarded Antonio entirely.

Antonio was merely a means to gain entry into Landbard Academy, nothing more and nothing less.

Antonio, who had looked down on him and deemed him useless trash since childhood.

“If you really want to fight again, you can come at me. But don’t expect me to go easy on you like today.”

Sssss.

Eugene emitted a faint killing intent, pressuring Antonio before continuing down the stairs.

And then he felt a sense of refreshment.

Perhaps it was his oppressed body feeling it; Eugene walked towards the main house’s exit with a spring in his step.

Round 27

What should I do?

For the past week, I’ve been so preoccupied with Ara that I lost touch with the outside world.

Of course, there was a time when I went out to buy children’s clothes and a straw hat, along with other necessities, and once when I went to give Young-seong some fruit juice, but during those times, I was too anxious about leaving Ara in the dungeon to pay attention to my surroundings.

“Even if I explain that it’s a slime…”

While staring at Ara, who still stood holding the sweet potatoes like twin swords, I scratched my head.

Would the kids really believe this sight?

I quietly placed my index finger on Ara’s lips to ask her to be quiet and quickly climbed up the ladder.

“Oh, what’s that? I smell sweet potatoes!”

As I came up, Jae-seong licked his lips and said this. Then, Seon-ah sniffed around and soon smiled upon seeing me.

“Brother, you totally look like a farmer. Look at what you’re wearing.”

“Why did Seon-ah suddenly come here? It’s hard to even find this place…”

The low rent of the infinite dungeon included such reasons. Precisely because there were no doors, it was impossible to prevent someone from entering.

Of course, most owners of infinite dungeons build new buildings around them to manage entry, but the place I lived was considered not worth such investment and was neglected.

‘I’ll need to buy the dungeon and build a surrounding structure first when I earn enough money.’

I hadn’t felt any urgency because there had never been visitors to the dungeon, but this incident was a wake-up call.

“It had been a while since I came home for the weekend and Jae-seong said he was visiting you, so I came along.”

Seon-ah’s eyes sparkled.

Thinking about it, she was a fanatic about awakened beings.

Seon-ah knew the names, techniques, and related events of famous awakened beings, and was so interested that she even entered a university program studying dungeon monsters.

Of course, she would have said she’d tag along if he said he was going to the dungeon.

“Hmm, just wait here a bit. I have some roasted sweet potatoes. I’ll bring them.”

“Really? We’ll come down too. It’s been a while since I saw the slimes.”

Jae-seong walked up nonchalantly.

I quickly blocked him, looking around anxiously.

“No, no, I’ll bring them. Just rest here. You must be tired from climbing up.”

“…Why are you acting like this, bro?”

Then Seon-ah, who had been casually exploring, noticed the vegetable garden and exclaimed.

“Wow! Are these the vegetables we ate last time? It’s really amazing. And I want to see the slime too! Jae-seong kept bragging about how cute it was…”

Seon-ah’s voice trailed off.

As I was blocking Jae-seong, I wondered why Seon-ah had suddenly quieted and looked over to see her frozen, staring at something.

Curious, I followed her gaze and…

“Krrrr.”

There was Ara, peering at us, wearing a straw hat with tiger ears, showing only her eyes through a connected hole in the ladder.

“…”

Busted.

Well, I knew I couldn’t hide her forever, but I never thought we’d be discovered this quickly.

“…Who is that, brother?”

“A slime.”

“Don’t lie. How can such a cute kid be a slime!”

Seon-ah then excitedly dashed off.

Startled by her reaction, Ara looked confused and quickly slipped back into the hole.

Following Ara, Seon-ah climbed down the ladder, and as I watched the two, Jae-seong asked.

“Were you blocking us because of her? But really, what’s going on? Is she your hidden child?”

“If she were my child, would she have tiger ears?”

“Wasn’t that just a decoration? Are they real ears?”

“Sigh…”

Since we’ve been discovered, there’s no need for pointless struggles.

I gestured to Jae-seong to follow me and climbed down the ladder.

“Baby, come to this sister!”

“It’s scary! It’s scary!”

They were busily running around.

At first, when she heard an unfamiliar voice, she grabbed the sweet potatoes as if they were weapons, ready to fight at any moment, but now she was running around, tears streaming down her face.

“Hi, kids. Remember me?”

In the meantime, Jae-seong greeted the slimes, and I swiftly prepared the sweet potatoes.

‘I barely saved them from the steamer.’

I almost overcooked them, but luckily, I saved them just in time. While I was preparing the sweet potatoes, something bumped into my thigh with a thump.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ! Save me! A strange woman is chasing me!”

Ara, clinging to my leg and mumbling as if she was about to cry, made me laugh without realizing it.

“Gasp! Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ! Are you in league with that woman? It’s a very serious crisis, why are you laughing?”

“Ara, these two are my siblings. Say hello.”

“Siblings!?”

Ara looked up at me in shock, then turned to look at Jae-seong and Seon-ah. Seon-ah was already taking pictures of Ara, who was clinging tightly to my leg, with her phone.

“Hello, Ara? So your name is Ara. I’m Seon-ah.”

“Seon-ah?!”

“I’m Jae-seong. Nice to meet you.”

“Jae-seong!”

Every word Ara said was punctuated with an exclamation mark, eventually making even Jae-seong burst out laughing.

Cuteness really does save the world. Even the usually unsmiling Jae-seong is laughing.

But why does she call my siblings by their names while I’m Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ?

“So what are you doing here, Ara? Why are you here?”

“I am Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ‘s subordinate!”

Suddenly, a cold gaze was directed at me.

Ah, even if you glare at me, it’s the truth.

“Ara is a slime. She may look human, but…”

“Lies!”

Seon-ah quickly attached herself to Ara, touching her cheeks. Ara stuttered in surprise at the sudden skinship.

“Such soft cheeks. And these tiny, neat hands and feet, you say she’s a slime?”

“It’s true.”

“I am a slime! The great slime of the Overlord Kyu-seong Kyu-seong !”

As if she had never been tearful and running away, suddenly she puffed out her chest and placed her hands on her hips. It seemed like she thought that pose was cool, but it was too late to make a difference now.

“Kyaa! How cute!”

…Well, it seems to have worked perfectly.

While Seon-ah was examining every bit of Ara, Jae-seong checked out the sweet potatoes.

“Did you harvest these now?”

“Yeah. Just harvested them. Wanna try some? You want the steamed or the roasted?”

“Both.”

Things are chaotic.

I split the sweet potatoes in half, giving Jae-seong half steamed and half roasted, and also handed some to Seon-ah, who was still squabbling with Ara.

“Sweet potatoes?”

“They’re delicious!”

“This is tasty?”

“Very, very tasty! Only Kyu-seong Kyu-seong  could create something like this!”

Seeing the sweet potatoes made Ara herself want some, and she looked at me with sparkling eyes. Knowing this, I naturally brought enough for Ara too and handed her what looked like more than ten roasted sweet potatoes.

“Truly Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ! My great Overlord!”

It seems that Ara was pleased to have received more sweet potatoes than Seon-ah or Jae-seong. She came up to me, her arms full of sweet potatoes, and bumped into me with her whole body.

“Oh?!”

And from behind, there came a surprised exclamation from Jae-seong, who had just eaten a sweet potato.

Soon after, Seon-ah took a bite of the roasted sweet potato and turned to look at me with a dazed expression, as if asking, “What did I just eat?” But she didn’t speak; instead, she was busily chewing.

“What the! These roasted sweet potatoes are insanely good, this is really….”

Leaving Jae-seong, who was seriously contemplating the sweet potatoes, I decided to catch up on some overdue work.

First, I cleaned up the ashes from making the roasted sweet potatoes and slowly cleared the still messy field.

Wriggle! Wriggle!

As I moved, the slimes diligently followed and helped me. Jae-seong and Seon-ah might need some time to recover from their shock, so I figured I’d get some work done in advance.

“I should plant the magic sweet potatoes.”

Planting magic sweet potatoes yields magic sweet potatoes. I had already planted all the potatoes, and they were just about to sprout.

Recently, I learned something new: replanting the magic cherry tomatoes resulted in the same magic cherry tomatoes.

“The levels were the same.”

Is further improvement impossible?

I wasn’t sure since I hadn’t tried many experiments yet, but it was a bit disappointing.

I wondered if something would change when Mark2’s level increased and his farming stats improved.

“Wow, you work like this? The slimes are cute yet admirable.”

Seon-ah, having recovered from her shock, still holding a sweet potato, watched me work.

“Me too! I’m also helping diligently!”

“Wow, Ara is really great. Cute and there’s nothing you can’t do!”

“Hehe.”

Seeing Ara happily twisting her body, I felt glad that I had introduced her to my siblings, even if it wasn’t intentional.

“Brother! Can I use some raw sweet potatoes?”

“Hm?”

“I’m going to cook something right now. I just came to hang out because of Seon-ah, but I can’t stand still.”

Jae-seong’s eyes sparkled.

It seemed that my sweet potatoes had inspired Jae-seong.

“That’s great for me. And it’s good because I’ve never fed Ara anything I’ve cooked before.”

“You’ve never fed her anything you’ve cooked?”

“Yeah. At most, I’ve just boiled, steamed, or roasted.”

“…This is a big responsibility. It’s Ara’s first time trying cooking.”

Ara, hearing her own story being discussed, tilted her head in confusion, wondering, “What is cooking?”

“Ara, do you want to watch Jae-seong cook?”

“Yes! I will watch!”

Even though Ara didn’t know what cooking was, it seemed fun to her, so she quickly ran over to Jae-seong. And the three of them, including Seon-ah, went upstairs.

Honestly, I was anxious since I had never left Ara alone except for brief moments outside, but I decided not to worry.

“Hmm, I think I’m being too protective of Ara.”

Of course, I need to be careful.

But I felt I had to restrain myself from being overly protective.

After sending the three of them upstairs, I finished cleaning the field and even prepared new sweet potatoes to plant.

With the slimes around, the work was finished quickly, and soon I decided to go up as the delicious smell wafted down to me.

“It’s a sweet smell.”

A very familiar sensation.

It seemed that Jae-seong was preparing a sweet potato dish.

Climbing up the ladder, I peeked to check the atmosphere. I saw Jae-seong cooking in the frying pan, Ara drooling as she watched, and Seon-ah wiping her drool.

“Sorry. I wish I could make something more spectacular, but I don’t have the ingredients or tools.”

“Why apologize, slurp, when you’re making something that looks, slurp, delicious.”

Oh dear.

I felt the need to educate Ara; at this rate, she might literally follow anyone who tempts her with delicious food, like a kidnapper.

“Speaking of getting kidnapped by delicious food, it suddenly reminds me of Kang Hanul.”

That gentleman also couldn’t resist good food; Ara would probably get along well with him. Now that I think about it, I haven’t contacted him recently; with my siblings here, I should step out and give him a call.

“There, it’s done.”

“Woowwaaa!”

Along with Ara’s excessive exclamation, it seemed that Jae-seong’s sweet potato dish was ready. The smell was definitely sweeter, raising my expectations.

“Oh? Brother, you came up too.”

“Brother, come quickly.”

“This is a dish called Matang! Matang!”

Watching Ara fussing, I hurried over.

And then I discovered something unexpected.

[Magic Sweet Potato Matang]

“An item label?”

Round 26

Prev | TOC | Next

I never thought it would be explained so blatantly.

“The Seven Deadly Sins…”

Demons known as the seven deadly sins, also called capital vices, originated from the Bible.

Somehow, monsters with the same concept as these biblical demons began appearing in dungeons.

The most famous of these was Mammon of Greed, who, despite the efforts of Kim Si-young, a renowned Awakener and Young-seong’s wife, and other top global Awakeners, could not be subdued.

“They said he looked oddly like a lower-level goblin.”

Then, there’s no reason a slime couldn’t be a sin too. Yes, it definitely could be, but…

Gobble Gobble!

Poooh, who was devouring boiled potatoes that had been cooked again, sensed someone looking at it and tilted its head with its blond hair swaying.

“This is delicious! More! I want more!”

I couldn’t tell how much this small body could hold. Moreover, these potatoes were supposed to be filling, yet it had already devoured more than 20.

“Isn’t your stomach full?”

“I am full! But still, I want more!”

Who would think that this was one of the Seven Deadly Sins, Gluttony? To an outsider, it just looked like a cute little girl with tiger ears.

‘If I cut the long hair, it might even look like a boy.’

Anyway, I checked Poooh’s status window again while it was busy eating potatoes. Specifically, I examined the abilities it possessed.

[Gluttony LV.??]

[Can eat anything.]

[Abilities grow depending on what is eaten.]

[Limits to fullness and growth disappear.]

??

What kind of bizarre ability is this?

Can eat anything and abilities grow based on the food eaten?

“Heh.”

And the phrase about the disappearance of the limits of fullness.

I could already hear my spine chilling.

“Are you feeling okay?”

As I made a strange noise, Poooh quickly turned to look at me.

“Are you feeling okay? Does something hurt?”

“No, it’s nothing.”

I couldn’t bring myself to tell it to stop eating, not with the way it looked at me with those bright, innocent eyes and potato crumbs around its mouth.

Didn’t they say cuteness could save the world?

Poooh certainly had a face that made me believe that saying.

‘Let’s just see how it goes.’

It was still one of the Seven Deadly Sins, after all.

A monster like that which had wiped out numerous high-level Awakeners.

For now, it might look harmless, but with that Gluttony ability, it could grow into a powerful ally.

“What’s next? Breath?”

The other of its only two abilities.

Breath, usually reminding one of a dragon’s breath, I wondered what it would be like.

I immediately looked into the description of Breath.

[Breath LV.1]

Extracts only the destructive power of mana and releases it through breath.

“Hmm…”

Is that all the explanation?

It felt somewhat lacking, but I had gotten used to this system window by now.

Clink! Clink!

The pot of water had boiled.

Holding potatoes in both hands and eagerly devouring them, Poooh’s eyes sparkled as it called out to me.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong. Potatoes! The potatoes are done!”

“Alright.”

Whether it was the Seven Deadly Sins, Gluttony, or Breath, it was like family, a slime. And since it also looked human, I couldn’t help but grow fonder of it.

Just grow up healthy.

* * *

A week had passed since this unexpected addition to the family.

Thump! Thump!

“Wow Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! Look how much there is! Look!”

While envying Mark2, I gave it a straw hat I had brought from outside, which matched its cute appearance at a glance.

Now, the one who was no longer Pooh but had acquired the name ‘Ara’ finally let out a joyful shout as she dug up sweet potatoes, marking her first harvest.

“Oh, well done?”

“Praise me more! More!”

“Right, right. Our Ara has been working so hard, so the sweet potatoes have grown well and we’ve harvested a lot.”

As I patted her hat, she giggled adorably.

Squirm!

“Yes, you all worked hard too. I’m proud of everyone.”

Mark2 and the slimes squirmed as they diligently moved the harvested sweet potatoes. After moving the sweet potatoes to the storage, we were finally able to try the first one.

“First, we put the sweet potatoes in the steamer… and when it comes to sweet potatoes, we can’t forget about roasted sweet potatoes.”

Now familiar with the process, I quickly prepared the steamer and placed the sweet potatoes inside.

Now it was time for the roasted sweet potatoes.

I started a fire using the well-dried leaves I had prepared beforehand, along with the stems of the mostly harvested potatoes and carrots.

“Now, as the fire starts to catch, we add the charcoal…”

I had bought the charcoal from outside.

I heated the charcoal, let it catch properly, and then crushed it finely.

“Kyu-seon Kyu-seong. Is it okay to break it?”

“Yes. Just make it into powder and keep only the embers.”

“I want to try it!”

“Okay. Be careful and don’t hurt yourself.”

Since there was nothing else to do, I watched Ara breaking the charcoal into pieces.

Ara occasionally failed to control her strength, causing sparks to fly, but she didn’t mind and continued to crush the charcoal finely.

“This is fun!”

“Hey? Look at your face. Hahaha!”

Ara, who had touched her face a few times because it felt itchy from the sparks, was laughing with soot smeared on her face.

“What happened! What happened!”

“Go look in the pond. Haha. Wash it off while you’re at it.”

“Got it!”

Thump, thump, thump!

Ara quickly ran to the pond and looked at her reflection with a surprised face.

“What is this! Am I sick?”

“It’s just soot. Your hands must be black too.”

“Gasp! That’s right! My hands are black too!”

Ara, having smeared soot here and there on her hands, ran back to me, smiling broadly.

“Kyu-seon Kyu-seong!”

“Huh?”

Her small hands reached toward me as I squatted down to make the roasted sweet potatoes. The touch on my face was soft.

“Hehe! Now you look just like me!”

“Oh really?”

In retaliation, I also touched the finely crushed charcoal and smeared it on my hand.

“Come here.”

“Hehe! Kyu-seon Kyu-seong is slower than me!”

Since the sweet potatoes were already in the steamer, all that was left was to wait, so I chased after Ara enthusiastically.

‘She is really fast, isn’t she?’

Although it seemed like a play between an adult and a child, Ara’s speed was genuinely fast. At first, I didn’t realize she was this quick, but I could see her physical abilities growing over time.

‘Is it because of Gluttony?’

Ara constantly ate my crops.

Thanks to that, there were hardly any surplus products left, but she seemed to have grown accordingly.

‘It’s not just ordinary food after all.’

If I just wanted to fill her stomach, I could easily get food from outside. But I specifically fed her valuable crops because of her Gluttony ability.

An ability that grows based on what is eaten.

Naturally, if she ate my crops, which had the effects of items, it was obvious that Ara’s specs would grow tremendously.

It didn’t seem very efficient, but eventually, as this accumulated, Ara would become an overpowered slime.

‘Then, eventually, we could complete the quest!’

The quest to hunt monsters with a slime could be cleared using Ara. It all rolled together smoothly, like gears meshing from farming onward.

“Kyu-seon Kyu-seong?”

“Huh? Oh! Sorry, I was just lost in thought.”

I suddenly found myself drooling with a silly expression. I wiped off the drool and scratched my head.

“Of course, Kyu-seon Kyu-seong is also looking forward to the sweet potatoes!”

“Of course! They’ll probably be delicious!”

At this point, I should check the information on the sweet potatoes we harvested earlier.

[Enchanted Sweet Potato LV.1]

[It contains faint magical power.]

[When consumed, it slightly enhances physical abilities for 3 minutes depending on the amount of mana possessed and permanently increases a small amount of health stats.]

It was a very healthy sweet potato.

I was happy that each crop had different effects.

“Kyu-seon Kyu-seong. It smells good! It must be delicious!” I casually flipped the roasted sweet potato in the embers and patted Ara’s hat as she bounced around in front of the steamer.

“Shall we take a look?”

Pop! Pop!

Suddenly, the slimes gathered around, visibly excited. When I opened the steamer, purple sweet potatoes that seemed well-cooked appeared.

‘Potatoes and sweet potatoes don’t change their appearance.’

Perhaps it’s still at the level of being imbued with magic. Once they become magic potatoes or magic sweet potatoes, they might change like carrots or cherry tomatoes.

“Ta-da.”

I carefully peeled the skin off the steamed sweet potato.

Then, a golden hue emerged, casting light around.

No, it wasn’t just a metaphor or an exaggeration—golden light literally burst forth.

“What is this…?!”

As I showed my surprise, Ara reached out her hand and, seemingly not too hot, took a bite immediately.

“Mmm!!!”

Shiver!

Ara expressed the deliciousness with her whole body, closing her eyes to savor the aftertaste. Then, suddenly, she offered me the sweet potato she had bitten into.

“Kyu-seon Kyu-seong!”

“Huh? Oh.”

I naturally leaned in.

And took a bite.

“Mmm?!”

Sweetness? No, such a simple word was insufficient to describe it.

Amid the sweetness and nuttiness, the rich flavor of the sweet potato seemed to dance around in my mouth, demanding attention.

I wanted to open my mouth to express how it tasted, but it felt as if glue was holding it shut. I just wanted to savor the flavor longer, unknowingly closing my eyes to enjoy it.

“Mark2! Poispois! Share it with everyone!”

Hearing Ara’s voice brought me back to reality.

Understanding Ara’s reaction, I was slightly moved by her nonchalant sharing.

It was admirable how such a little one already knew to look after others.

“We have more sweet potatoes, so no need to just have one. Here.”

I struggled to swallow the saliva that had filled my mouth as I distributed more sweet potatoes. Then, for the gluttonous Ara, I placed more sweet potatoes in the steamer and checked on the roasted ones.

“Shall we take them out now?”

Honestly, I prefer roasted sweet potatoes. Therefore, my expectations were now sky-high.

Roasted sweet potatoes are so delicious, but what about these?

Crackle-

As I brushed away the ashes, sweet potatoes wrapped in foil revealed themselves. Perhaps because it was the first time cooking them this way, Ara’s eyes sparkled with curiosity.

Using a shovel, I took out the sweet potatoes and, wearing gloves, peeled off the foil. The aroma was even stronger than when we took out the steamed ones.

“Ah.”

“It’s delicious! Delicious, isn’t it!”

Just by smelling them, Ara was already excited and jumped up and down on the spot. Indeed, the scent of the ones roasted on the fire was much more intense.

Whoosh-

“Wow.”

Fortunately, it was perfectly roasted without any burnt parts. As I gently peeled off the skin while wearing gloves, the same golden light burst forth.

It was as if it resembled Ara’s hair.

“Kyu-seon Kyu-seong!”

“Wait a moment. Here, is it not too hot?”

Ara took the sweet potato from me and quickly popped it into her mouth without answering. Unlike earlier, she started squirming happily.

“Is it good?”

“Yes!”

A simple answer. As expected, to really know the taste, I had to try it myself.

“Let’s eat. Mmm.”

As I bit into the sweet potato, its moist yet soft texture overwhelmed my mouth. Then, it immediately delivered a one-two punch of intense sweetness and savory flavor.

“Wow…”

If I had eaten this before the steamed sweet potato, I might have passed out from the deliciousness. Thankfully, having prepared myself in advance, I was only moderately shocked.

Wobble! Wobble!

“Ah! Sorry, sorry.”

I quickly snapped back to reality and began distributing the roasted sweet potatoes to the slimes, who were twisting their bodies as if asking for their share.

Fortunately, roasted sweet potatoes didn’t need to be confined to a limited space like a steamer or pot, so I had made a large batch, which meant no extra work was necessary.

“Kyu-seon Kyu-seong. I like this one better! This suits my taste more!”

“Indeed. I also prefer the roasted sweet potatoes.”

“But I can’t give up steamed sweet potatoes either! Both are good! I’ll eat both!”

Just pick one, just one.

I patted Ara’s head as she waved it around like she was making a proclamation, holding a steamed and a roasted sweet potato in each hand.

Cuteness indeed saves the world. Why is she so adorable?

Then, a noise came from the upstairs, which should have been empty.

“Huh?”

“Is it an intruder! It’s an intruder!”

Ara seemed to have heard the same noise as I did, pointing her half-eaten sweet potato like a weapon towards the stairs.

“Bro! I’m here.”

“Ah, Jae-seong?”

I was surprised.

It was about time for Jae-seong to return.

But it wasn’t just one voice I heard.

“Bro, I’m here too!”

“Seon-ah?”

The siblings had both come to the dungeon.
