Round 23

In the midst of a room cluttered with various items, a man seemed to have fallen asleep while working on something.

“Ugh?!”

Suddenly, he woke up and wiped the drool from his mouth.

“When did I fall asleep? Ugh.”

Choi Young-seong stood up from his spot and stretched. Then, he checked the work he had been doing the day before.

“Um…”

He had bought four bottles of fruit and vegetable juice from Kyu-seong. Two of these were used for research purposes, and the other two were administered to his wife, Kim Si-young, whose condition he was monitoring.

He faintly hoped that this juice could be the key to detoxification.

“It’s a detoxifying agent like I’ve never seen before. It’s impossible to synthesize with current technology.”

Having lived through the era of first-generation awakeners, Choi Young-seong had conducted all sorts of research. He was confident he had mostly unraveled the mysteries of dungeons and awakening powers.

However, his confidence had significantly waned after his wife, Kim Si-young, was poisoned. Despite utilizing all his knowledge, her condition had not improved, and he was gradually losing hope.

“We can cure her.”

But a glimmer of hope had reignited his fading determination.

Thanks to Kyu-seong’s capabilities, a strong light of hope had emerged, and recently, Choi Young-seong was researching more vigorously than he had in his youth.

Just as he was about to check on his wife’s condition after briefly tidying up his research…

“Hey, honey? Are you done for the day?”

“…Huh?”

Choi Young-seong couldn’t believe his eyes.

It had been years since Kim Si-young had spent her days confined to a bed.

He could hardly remember the last time he saw her walking.

Yet, there she was, struggling but slowly walking with the support of the wall.

“Honey, look at this. I got up. Surprised?”

“Ah, how can this be…”

Stammering in disbelief, Choi Young-seong quickly rushed to support his staggering wife. She felt frail, but unlike before, there was strength in her body.

“Ah…”

“Why are you crying? Shouldn’t you be happier that I’m up?”

“No, I am happy! I’m crying because I’m happy!”

Despite her pale complexion, Kim Si-young playfully spoke to Choi Young-seong, who was tearfully shouting.

Regaining his composure, he helped her back into the room.

“You shouldn’t be moving around yet. Why did you suddenly do this?”

“I wanted to make you happy. I guess I succeeded?”

Choi Young-seong immediately checked Kim Si-young’s physical condition with a machine powered by mana stones. The machine quickly assessed her condition and showed results.

“Ah!”

The results were significantly better than before. It was clear that the toxins in her body had substantially weakened.

“All this with just two bottles of juice?!”

It was astonishing.

For the first time, a real possibility of complete recovery seemed within reach.

“How is it? Am I much better?”

“Yes, but you still shouldn’t overdo it. You haven’t moved in a long time, so your muscles and body are quite weak.”

“Got it. Today I just wanted to surprise you. I’ll try not to overdo it from now on.”

Kim Si-young said with a broad smile.

Seeing her much brighter than just a few days ago, Choi Young-seong struggled to hold back his tears and smiled with her.

“We can cure you. A complete recovery is possible.”

“It feels like a dream. I wouldn’t have believed it before, but experiencing it myself, it really seems like I can recover.”

“I will make sure you recover. We can go back to how things were!”

“Yes!”

Kim Si-young and Choi Young-seong looked at each other and smiled brightly.

“What’s the first thing you want to do when you’re completely cured?”

“Um… First, I want to thank the person who helped cure me.”

“Kyu-seong? Right. I’ve been meaning to contact him but got distracted.”

Suddenly, he felt a strong urge to share this joyful news with Lee Kyu-seong. Although Kyu-seong was likely unreachable inside the dungeon, Choi Young-seong decided to leave a message first.

“Kyu-seong! We need more juice!”

In his haste, Choi Young-seong had yet to send his words of gratitude.

* * *

After spending about a day in the dungeon, Jae-seong returned home, indicating he needed to prepare something more.

“Hmm, it’s still synthesizing.”

Even after a day, the synthesizing process was still ongoing, which was starting to worry me.

“Young-seong’s data didn’t have much information… Is there nothing else I can do?”

Information about slimes was scarce.

Most of the papers were just formalities filled with complicated terms, and often, the information I discovered myself was more substantial.

I understood it now.

Other monsters yielded by-products upon defeat, each with varying values, but slimes were deemed useless.

Gurgle! Gurgle!

Just then, Poispois, having finished its task, climbed onto my lap on the floor and shook its body as if to protest.

“They’re not useless. They’re cute like this!”

Surrounded by slimes that provided healing by their mere presence, I acknowledged that they weren’t favored for their lack of aggression and frailty. No one seemed to pay them much attention.

Should I check if I’ve received any messages from Young-seong? It’s about time.

‘Since I haven’t used my ability today, checking messages first wouldn’t hurt.’

I might still need more fruit and vegetable juice, but if not, synthesizing slimes could be a good option.

Harvest time for other things was approaching, so I decided to step outside and contact Young-seong.

I made sure to tell the slimes not to mess with Poooh before I left the dungeon.

“Oh?”

There was a new order for more juice from Young-seong. I wondered how the treatment was going.

‘Hanul must be busy.’ It was unusual for him not to contact me.

He usually left lots of messages, so his silence felt somewhat disappointing. However, instead of reaching out to him, I decided to call Young-seong.

Ring-ring-ring—Click!

“Hey, Young-seong! Hello.”

-Ah! Kyu-seong! Thank you! Really, thank you!

The abrupt gratitude in his voice led me to guess that the results were favorable.

“I was just curious about the results. Your voice sounds like it went well?”

-Kyu-seong, don’t be shocked. It seems like the item you created is effective. Not just effective, but there might be a possibility for a complete cure!

Oh! This was indeed welcome news.

I could understand why Young-seong sounded so happy.

“You asked for more juice, how much more do you need?”

-As much as possible for now!

“Got it. I’ll start making it right away.”

-Where should we meet? The cafe we met last time?

Then I heard a woman’s voice over the phone.

-I’d like to see Kyu-seong too.

“Oh? Is that your wife?”

Her voice sounded lively, which really seemed like she was in good condition. Seeing it for myself would be great, especially if the juice had significantly helped her.

“Then I’ll come to you, brother.”

-No, no need to strain yourself. I’ll come to you.

“No, no, I’ll come to you. I’ve finished all my work anyway.”

I was eager to see the results for myself.

The fact that something I created could save someone felt profoundly significant.

‘To think that I, who was almost useless, could become someone who saves lives…’

And it was all due to my unique ability.

While crops could somehow be produced by others, only I could turn them into juice through liquid synthesis, making it entirely my accomplishment.

-I’m really sorry…

“It’s okay. You’ve always come to me; I can come to you this time. Plus, I’d like to see your wife. Please send me the address.”

-Thank you.

After hanging up, I checked the address; it was in Yongsan.

It seemed his home wasn’t far from his shop.

As soon as the cooldown for liquid synthesis was over, I immediately made two more batches of juice.

This time it included magical mini carrots.

[Magical Vegetable Juice LV.1]

Ingredients: Magic cherry tomatoes, magic mini carrots, Layla.

Effects:

– For 20 seconds, allows the user to discern information about monsters based on their mana.

– Enhances detoxification effects.

– For 1 minute, eliminates hostile reactions from monsters, excluding dungeon bosses.

“Wow.”

Just changing the carrots improved the overall effect, probably because the ingredients were tied together as a magical set.

‘The detox effect is enhanced. Could this really cure Young-seong’s wife?’

With the juice ready, I headed to Young-seong’s house, filled with anticipation.

“Are you here?”

“There was no need for you to come out.”

Young-seong greeted me as I arrived at the house.

As we entered, a voice called from inside.

“Did you come?”

“Yes, I’m here.”

That voice belonged to Kim Si-young, the former vice guild leader of Ara Hongryeon  Guild and a legendary awakener.

I followed Young-seong to where she was.

“Hello, I’m Kyu-seong Lee.”

“Oh my. Such a handsome young man. I’m Kim Si-young. Thanks to you, I’m still hanging on.”

Young-seong made an awkward face as Kim Si-young spoke playfully. Seeing them, I felt an even stronger sense of mission.

‘I will definitely cure her.’

I didn’t want their story to end sadly.

I wanted to see their happiness with my own eyes.

“Brother, here’s the juice.”

“Ah, thanks.”

“Kyu-seong, did you awaken a unique ability?”

“Yes. It’s called liquid synthesis.”

I used to be shy about mentioning it, but now I could proudly state the name of my ability.

Especially now, feeling that liquid synthesis was far from being an insufficient power.

“Ah, so you create the mysterious item with that ability.

“You wouldn’t believe how many times Ara Hongryeon  Guild has contacted me because of this.”

What? Ara Hongryeon  Guild contacted because of me?

“I had no idea about that.”

“You were invited to Ara Hongryeon  Guild, remember?”

“Yes, that was the day I met with you last time.”

“After you left that day, not just Hanul but also the guild leader himself contacted me.”

“What did they say?”

“They were just curious about you. They asked if you had any hobbies, what you like, stuff like that.”

Well, my produce did make a big impact.

Once you taste it, it’s hard to forget.

After some small talk, Young-seong finally checked the juice. I gave him a sly smile and whispered softly.

“It’s been upgraded, that one.”

“Huh? What did you say?”

“It’s gotten better. Ah! Since your wife is an Awakener, she should be able to perceive its effects.”

“Let me see.”

Intrigued by my words, Young-seong handed the juice to his wife. She then began to recite the effects of the item.

“Upon consumption, can verify information about monsters for 20 seconds… stronger detoxification… neutralizes hostile reactions for a minute?”

“What?! The text has changed?”

“Hehe. My juice is continually being improved. It might get even better in the future.”

“I mean, that’s…”

I had hoped for a dramatic reaction, but seeing Young-seong’s shocked face, I guessed it was good enough. Anyway, good is good, and I waited eagerly for his wife to drink the juice.

“Are you thinking of researching it again?”

“Um, just take one for now and observe the effects…”

Then, his wife drank the juice in one shot. She finished it and smiled satisfactorily.

“It’s not only good for the health but tastes great too! Thank you, Kyu-seong. These days, this is what I look forward to.”

“That’s a million won right there, honey!”

Hmm…

I hadn’t thought about it, but realizing a million won had just disappeared made me feel somewhat uneasy.

I smiled and ignored Young-seong’s comment about the cost, watching his wife as I rummaged through my bag again.

“What are you looking for now?”

“I brought a gift.”

I had a surplus of carrots from the recent harvest.

It wasn’t enough to sell like usual, just enough to enjoy with people around me.

“What is that?”

“Carrots.”

They were indeed carrots, but their unusually small size made them quite unique. I picked up a carrot as if it were a strawberry and handed them out to Young-seong and his wife.

“Try this.”

“Getting juice and now this…”

“This is just a little extra.”

Young-seong seemed to feel a bit guilty, or perhaps he was contemplating more research.

In the meantime, his wife bit into a carrot.

Crunch!

Soon after, an expression of satisfaction burst forth, fulfilling my hopeful anticipation.

“What is this! It’s incredibly delicious?!”

Strike 124

Prev I TOC I Next

In Ares, there are various stats that start from the five basic stats.

The total number of these stats exceeds twenty.

It can be said that the acquisition of these stats mostly varies according to the job group.

There are stats that are much superior to these more than twenty stats.

These are called legendary stats.

Legendary stats.

They are the stats that exhibit the most outstanding effects among all existing stats.

The methods to obtain them are truly diverse.

And, of course, not just anyone can obtain these legendary stats.

Only those who meet certain qualifications can obtain them.

Lee Se-jin, who was visiting the Special User Management Team, marveled at Hyun-soo who was advancing while reciting ‘Even if it breaks’ under his breath.

“How likely do you think it is for Hyun-soo user to unlock the legendary stat of Will today?” Upon Se-jin’s question, Tae-seok thought for a moment and then said, “It seems a bit difficult.

“As you know, the stat of Will literally requires pulling up to the extreme of mental strength.” Lee Se-jin agrees.

User Hyun-soo somehow manages to obtain the stat of Will.

The title ‘Even if it breaks’ itself eventually bestows that stat on Hyun-soo.

The will that Hyun-soo has shown so far and the related matters accumulate to sprout into a stat.

Lee Se-jin estimated this to happen in about 3 months.

And as Kim Tae-seok said, the second method was for Hyun-soo to obtain it by pulling his mental strength to the extreme.

But it is not an easy task.

‘After all, the stat of Will was made for those with such mental strength.’ However, Lee Se-jin was confident that user Hyun-soo had enough qualifications.

It wasn’t for no reason that he was endowed with the title ‘Even if it breaks.’

The regret is this.

‘If he faints there, the quest with Ben will fail.’

But then, just when it seemed Hyun-soo was about to close his eyes, he stood up.

[Not back down.]

After murmuring so, he grasped the wooden sword again.

At that moment.

[User Hyun-soo satisfies the conditions for unlocking the Will stat.]

Lee Se-jin shuddered at the notification he heard.

‘The Will stat, it was indeed too suitable for user Hyun-soo…!’

The legendary stat was also the most suitable stat for the user.

‘That’s why it will create the greatest synergy for user Hyun-soo.’

Tae-seok spoke with a surprised expression.

“Mr. President, maybe user Hyun-soo has taken a step closer to a sentence-type title?”

“Right.”

Representative Lee Se-jin had another expectation for user Hyun-soo.

Unknown to user Hyun-soo, his ‘My Own Title,’ a special title, can also transform into a sentence.

And when multiple words come together to form a sentence, only then does My Own Title exert greater power.

How it will exert greater power is unknown to Lee Se-jin.

After all, it was Ares who had bestowed My Own Title.

A little while ago, user Hyun-soo said across the monitor.

‘Not back down.’

As a result, a small sentence was completed.

‘Even if it breaks, Not back down.’

A sentence that represents a firm will.

‘What power will it wield once completed?’

And what will fill the yet incomplete sentence in the future?

Lee Se-jin looked at Hyun-soo beyond the monitor with anticipation.

***

Hyun-soo’s blurred vision cleared.

The muscles throughout his body, which had been alternating between tension and relaxation with a burning sensation, relaxed.

Like the refreshment one feels after waking up from sleep, Hyun-soo’s entire body loosened.

The abnormal state that had dominated his mind and body.

It had disappeared without a trace.

[You have acquired the Legendary Stat. Will.]

The reason Hyun-soo’s body could heal cleanly.

It was thanks to the first-time opening privilege.

Furthermore, it wasn’t just that his physical condition returned to its original state.

He became 20% less fatigued than usual and felt a surge of vitality.

‘The stat of Will…’

Hyun-soo savored the pleasant name.

He had never heard of anyone in the world possessing such a stat.

‘It’s a stat made only for me.’

Hyun-soo checked what Will was through the detailed description feature.

[You can acquire it by performing or repeating actions related to Will. Furthermore, as the Will stat increases, you will become slightly less fatigued and your body will be invigorated.]

“Wow…”

Hyun-soo marveled.

The reason he deemed the stat of Will excellent was because it could be accumulated through repetitive actions.

For example, dexterity could be cited.

The Dexterity stat can be acquired whenever one consistently creates something.

Similarly, Will could be steadily acquired.

Moreover, according to the description, it makes you slightly less fatigued and invigorates your body.

For instance, if the physical vitality level is 100%.

Gaining one Will might raise it by 0.1%.

What if ten Will stats are accumulated?

‘You gain 1% more endurance and vitality.’

What if it’s 100? That becomes 10%, and what if it’s 1,000?

‘It means becoming significantly less fatigued than now.’

Of course, it’s regrettable that it can only be increased through repetitive actions.

However, stats are, after all, something that accumulates over time.

‘This is the stat I need the most.’

The reason Hyun-soo considers this Will stat to be perfectly suited for him lies in his usual working method.

Whenever he creates something, he works through nights and days on end.

In the process of staying up all night, Hyun-soo naturally becomes tired.

A tired person’s concentration significantly decreases.

But if one is less tired, perhaps they could produce better work.

Marveling at this, Hyun-soo resumed his ghost step training.

One of the reasons Hyun-soo couldn’t stop practicing the ghost step was because he was getting the hang of it.

How to plan his movement lines and how to move.

Just when physical and mental limits were regretfully holding him back, Hyun-soo, who became less fatigued, continued to refine his movements.

After 4 hours had passed,

[You have acquired 1 Will stat.]

“……Kuh!”

Hyun-soo marveled.

The application through such repetition.

‘The stat of Will will also increase when doing blacksmith work.’

Of course, the just increased 1 Will stat didn’t seem significant.

But, every little bit adds up to a lot.

Thanks to the once recovered condition, Hyun-soo could become much more accustomed to the ghost step.

And then he triggered it for the last time.

Hyun-soo’s body moved smoothly, unlike when he first started three days ago.

1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th times… And then.

Crash-

His path got tangled and he fell.

Though he fell, Hyun-soo smiled slightly.

‘A confirmed six times.’

He succeeded six times out of ten, ten times.

And from the 7th time, it felt like a demonic barrier to Hyun-soo.

Despite repeating the transition from 6 to 7 times a hundred times, it didn’t work.

Still, he was satisfied.

‘His Highness Ben suggested four times. But I did two more than that.’

[Training for the ghost step concludes.]

The training was over.

‘I wish to show it to His Highness Ben quickly.’

Hyun-soo left the training ground.

As he came out, two soldiers were guarding outside.

“Where is His Highness?”

“He is preparing for a banquet.”

Hyun-soo realized.

He seemed to have heard it briefly from Ben.

After the Minor World Tree revived, Ben, who had shared many stories with Hyun-soo, seemed to have experienced a change of heart and decided to hold a banquet.

‘The banquet is to gather many noble families, right?’

He remembered the expressions of Pan and Frak, excited by the fact that their families were coming.

‘Should I also go to the banquet?’

Hyun-soo moved towards the banquet hall.

***

The Crimson Dragon Squad was not raised by Ben but was an assassin group nurtured by the Praham Kingdom, by a rather renowned noble.

Their main mission was assassination.

And while some may wish for peace between the Goyard and Praham Kingdoms, many did not.

The Crimson Dragon Squad was a prime example.

A group created for war.

Peace might mean their obsolescence.

Kun, the leader of the Crimson Dragon Squad.

He received a report.

“I hear that more people will be returned to the Goyard Kingdom than the promised prisoners.”

Returning prisoners.

This was the greatest step towards peace.

Kun no longer felt the need for their presence here.

Moreover, the Crimson Dragon Squad had many places they wanted to go, not just the Praham Kingdom.

The number of the Crimson Dragon Squad gathered in the darkness was about seventy.

All of them devoted their lives to Kun’s commands, as he had brainwashed them for a long time.

“Let’s give a gift to the king who intends to abandon us. Lek, take seven assassins and head straight to the banquet hall. The rest will move to the frontier with me.”

Kun knew.

He and his members couldn’t lay a finger on Ben.

But……

“Take away the king’s precious ones.”

Who were these precious ones?

The second-in-command of the kingdom, Pan, and the nobles, along with their families.

“Understood.”

With Kun’s command, the assassins disappeared.

And there stood Lek.

He was the vice-captain who replaced Frak, who had lost an arm.

He led seven assassins toward the banquet hall.

***

Walking towards the banquet hall, Hyun-soo could see Pan at the end of the corridor with his family.

‘Oh, he had many children?’

The second-in-command of the kingdom, Pan.

He was there with several children and his wife.

‘This is the first time I’ve seen such a scene.’

Always expressionless, fitting for someone of the strategist profession.

Seeing such a person smile like that was a first.

“The banquet will start soon!”

At those words, people in the corridor rushed inside.

Hyun-soo followed them into the crowded banquet hall.

There were already many people in the banquet hall.

And at the end of the banquet hall, about 120 meters away from Hyun-soo, Ben sat with an unusually joyful smile.

And next to him, Frak, the descendant of Spear Heaven, was exchanging greetings.

Meanwhile, Hyun-soo’s brows furrowed.

He felt something was off because a knight passing by him had slipped his hand into his pocket.

The knight at the forefront.

He was exchanging eye signals with other knights scattered around.

Hyun-soo realized.

Something was about to happen.

Before it could happen, he warned the man five steps away.

“If you draw, you die.”

Soon, his gaze met with the man who turned his head.

He was wearing a deep smile.

That gaze was of someone who was prepared for death and confident in completing his mission.

Ding!

[Pop-up Quest: The Rebellion of the Crimson Dragon Squad]

Grade: S

Restriction: Witness to the rebellion

Reward: Negotiation Skill

Failure Penalty: Decrease in intimacy with Ben.

Description: The goal of the Crimson Dragon Squad members in the banquet hall is to assassinate Pan and his family, including the nobles. Stop them.

Quests sometimes reveal truths unknown to the user.

But the truth was realized too late.

“There is no peace!”

The assassin standing in front shouted.

Everyone in the banquet hall turned their heads abruptly.

It seemed like a signal flare as assassins disguised as ordinary knights moved simultaneously.

At this moment, everything seemed to slow down for Hyun-soo.

His eyes met with Ben’s, who was seated far away.

Ben’s expression was terribly distorted.

Ben had realized it too.

Even him, at this distance, couldn’t stop the assassins’ swift attacks.

After all, they had planned every move, every step.

Hyun-soo saw the assassins moving in various directions from eight different locations.

Instinctively, he activated the Command of Monarch.

They stopped in their tracks, each frozen in position.

But they managed to neutralize him and moved towards their targets again.

At this moment, Hyun-soo thought of the ghost step.

‘There are eight of them.’

Only the ghost step, which activates for a second, can stop them.

The problem was that there were eight of them.

Even after 100 attempts, Hyun-soo couldn’t break through the barrier of six times.

“Aaah…….”

The screams sounded slow.

The bewildered eyes seemed like they were in slow motion.

Ben’s increasingly distorted expression was visible.

-Good, this happiness. It’s all thanks to you.

Ben’s gentle smile, as he said those words during their conversation, flashed through his mind.

Swoosh-

There’s nothing he can’t do. He must do it.

Grasping the sword, he collects his breath.

As if he had practiced hundreds of times.

Hundreds of people in view. He only focuses on the mere eight among them.

And in an instant, the path is complete.

Whoosh-

“Ghost Step.”

A ghost walks through the banquet hall.

Martial 1

TOC I NEXT

The Supreme Warrior or the Ultimate Martial Artist of the World.

These are all epithets that follow me.

Of course, there are a few more.

Murderer, Great Evil.

And the Public Enemy of the Martial World.

Why is someone called the Supreme Warrior branded a murderer and marked as the public enemy of the martial world?

Because I am the Heavenly Demon.

An existence that should disappear from the Central Plains Martial World, an existence that must be killed.

That’s exactly who I am, Baek Yoo-jin.

In fact, I never intended to become the Heavenly Demon from the beginning, nor was I related to the Demon Cult, and neither were my parents related to it.

‘But why did I become the Heavenly Demon?’

Well.

There are several reasons, but it probably started with a disciple from the Hwasan sect who first dueled with me.

A disciple of Hwasan, who strutted around bullying the weak and harassing women.

At that time, I knocked him down with just the basic martial arts I learned from a third-rate warrior, and this guy suddenly spread rumors that I had learned demonic martial arts,

‘without even considering his own weakness.’

And because of this guy, many started chasing after me.

Of course, not enough to mobilize an entire sect, just a few people?

But strangely, they all lost to me.

Whether I was strong or the martial arts I learned from the third-rate warrior were tremendous, everyone from the Hwasan sect to the Shaolin temple, the Wudang sect, and the Nangong family lost to me.

Eventually, I found myself targeted by the orthodox factions.

‘They misunderstand and attack only to lose miserably; how petty.’

Thus, I was chased by the Jeomchang sect and fell off a cliff.

“Ah, at that moment, I really thought, ‘Is this how I’m going to die in vain?'”

I barely survived and moved to a cave at the edge of the cliff where I found it.

The Heavenly Divine Skill of Heavenly Demon Galcheon-eok, which turned the martial world upside down 500 years ago.

‘Isn’t this too much? Nearly killed for being mistaken for a member of the Demon Cult, and now they’re practically telling me to openly become the Heavenly Demon?’

Seeing the Heavenly Divine Skill, I got angry all over again.

These orthodox guys think they lost because they are weak and try to kill an innocent person by accusing him of being a demon.

So I made up my mind.

If both the heavens and the Central Plains Martial World think of me as a demon,

‘I might as well really become the Heavenly Demon.’

That’s how I spent 10 years in that cave learning the Heavenly Divine Skill.

In the cave, there were wall-nut elixirs and other foods, and a well, so I didn’t starve, and the person who made the cave must have stolen treasures from Shaolin, including the Great Restoration Elixir, Qingcheng Essence Oil, and the Thousand-Year Polygonum.

The Heavenly Divine Skill included separate internal cultivation techniques, so utilizing the energy of miraculous medicines was no issue.

Additionally, I later came to realize that my body was of the “Boneless Physique,” the best type for learning martial arts.

A body that learns ten times from being taught just once.

‘No wonder.’

It felt odd that I could defeat warriors from major sects with just the martial arts I learned from a mere third-rate warrior.

Thus, in a very short period, I acquired the Heavenly Divine Skill and an extraordinary amount of internal energy exceeding several decades.

And then, back into the martial world.

In the end, I drew my sword against the orthodox factions that attacked me and slaughtered them.

For 20 years.

The bodies of the orthodox faction warriors piled higher than mountains, and my evil deeds accumulated as well.

In the meantime, thanks to the Martial Alliance, the Demon Cult, which had nothing to do with me, has withered away, right?

Of course, I don’t feel sorry for the Demon Cult.

Unlike the Demon Cult, which kills children, women, and even the elderly, I only killed those who attacked me. I never killed innocent children, women, or ordinary people who were not martial artists.

That’s how I got to this point.

***

“It’s been a long time chasing you.”

Cling.

In front of the Heavenly Demon, five sect leaders from the major sects drew their swords, emanating killing intent.

All these sect leaders gathered to try and kill just one man.

‘How did my life end up like this?’

Would it have been different if he had lost to that Hwasan sect disciple he fought long ago?

He had only killed those who attacked him, but now it seems the entire martial world wants him dead.

‘I’m tired.’

The Heavenly Demon sighed as he looked at the cloud-filled sky.

Such a futile life.

Of course, killing the five sect leaders in front of him is not a problem.

Thanks to the Heavenly Divine Skill, he had already reached the realm of Transcendence.

All the sect leaders in front of him are in the Transformation realm, below him.

Of course, in the martial world, outcomes aren’t solely determined by one’s realm, but he had already fought other major sect leaders, so these will be no different.

However, the Heavenly Demon no longer wanted to fight.

He was mentally exhausted and longed for an ordinary life.

‘Would they accept an apology?’

The Heavenly Demon had this absurd thought and chuckled to himself.

After all, to them, he was nothing less than a nemesis, not something to be settled with a mere apology.

“I will kill you and restore peace to the martial world.”

Thud Thud.

The ground trembled.

Behind the five sect leaders, numerous warriors, and the sect leaders themselves, rapidly approached him.

Swoosh.

The Heavenly Demon watched them approach, sighed deeply, and spread his arms wide.

And then…

Whoosh!

The swords of the five sect leaders plunged into the body of the Heavenly Demon.

“?! “

“This… What is this?!”

The sect leaders of Hwasan and Mudang, disbelieving, looked at the Heavenly Demon as he spat blood.

What was this situation?

Instead of repelling them with his powerful strength as usual, he just stood there.

Drip.

The Heavenly Demon spat blood and gazed numbly at the sky.

The resentful glares of those who wished him dead, the wrongful rumors that emerged even when he just breathed.

It all exhausted him.

He didn’t even care about losing his transcendent status anymore.

Everything just tired him out.

Others might not understand him.

They could say his spirit is weak.

But he wanted to ask them,

‘If someone you don’t know curses you, even wishing death upon you, can you just laugh it off? For decades?’

Surely, no one could answer.

Perhaps only a demon, gone mad, could endure it.

The demons are already mad, so they won’t care about curses or insults.

But he was not one of them.

Since he was not a demon, it was difficult to endure venomous insults and bloodshot curses.

No.

Rather, it was remarkable that he had endured for decades.

Swoosh.

Slide.

Thud.

As the sect leaders hesitated and pulled out the sword they had thrust into the body of the Heavenly Demon, he collapsed forward right where he stood.

‘All of them looking bewildered, how amusing…’

The Heavenly Demon burst into laughter inside as he watched the sect leaders look at each other in confusion.

‘Isn’t it truly vain? Isn’t it utterly hollow? All this while, you just grind your teeth and vowed revenge, and yet here I am, dying in an instant.’

The Heavenly Demon silently shouted these unheard words to the sect leaders, feeling the cold of the earth rising up through his body.

‘If there is another life…’

I will not live like this.

I will be the object of envy and live respected by all.

‘Let’s become a great person, not a villain, in history.’

The Heavenly Demon sighed with regret and slowly closed his eyes.

***

‘Umm…’

In a quite spacious cabin, a young child furrowed his brow and got up.

‘I am… alive… huh?’

The young child, clutching his throbbing head, mumbled incomprehensible words, then suddenly opened his eyes wide as he looked at his small hands.

‘This… what is this…’

The identity of the young child was none other than Baek Yoo-jin, the Heavenly Demon.

‘Have I been reincarnated?’

But that seemed strange.

He was not a newborn, his memories were intact, and moreover, he was in a building he had never seen before, wearing clothes he had never worn.

Swipe.

Yoo-jin’s eyes shook wildly as he looked at his face in the mirror hung nearby.

Blonde hair and green eyes.

And still not quite a youth, but a boy’s face.

It was a completely unfamiliar face.

Rub, rub.

Yoo-jin touched and pinched his face in the mirror.

‘It’s not a dream…?’

Then what on earth is this?

‘Could it be…?!’

Yoo-jin, looking in the mirror, looked around and frowned.

‘Yes, it must be an illusion!’

Flutter.

Yoo-jin thought it was an illusion and tried to release energy by moving his arm.

‘Uh…?’

However, he realized there was no internal energy inside his body, and his face went blank again.

No matter the illusion, it couldn’t remove his internal energy.

It could make him think he had none, but he was a master of a certain realm.

He was not someone who could be affected by such illusions.

‘Then it means this isn’t an illusion…Ouch.’

Throb.

Yoo-jin thought deeply about his current situation and frowned as pain shot up from his left wrist.

Swipe.

Slide.

‘My wrist is cut.’

Yoo-jin looked at the wound on his body and frowned.

His left wrist was slashed, and it was so deep that it had reached the artery, causing blood to flow.

Thump. Drip. Thump.

Yoo-jin quickly performed acupuncture to stop the bleeding from his wrist.

Swipe, swipe.

Of course, since acupuncture required internal energy for perfect execution, in this situation he could not completely stop the bleeding but only reduce it as much as possible by wrapping his wrist with a bandage nearby.

‘Sigh… What on earth has happened…?’

Yoo-jin glanced around the cabin and tilted his head when he noticed a strange pattern drawn with blood under his feet.

“What kind of pattern is this?”

Yoo-jin was curious about the pattern he was seeing for the first time.

He had eliminated the Blood Sect, which used such blood-drawn formations, but the pattern he was now seeing was unfamiliar to him.

“This place has been erased.”

Yoo-jin looked at a place within the regularly drawn pattern that awkwardly broke off.

Having seen many such patterns during battles with the Blood Sect, he didn’t know what specific pattern this was, but he could vaguely make out its rules.

“It must have been erased when this body fell on its knees.”

Press.

Swipe. Swipe.

Thinking that the pattern before him might be the cause of his current situation, Yoo-jin tried connecting the pattern that was erased with the blood seeping from his wrist.

Roar.

“Indeed.”

Then, the pattern covering the cabin floor began to emit a red light.

Eventually.

Rumble.

“…?!”

Something huge emerged from the pattern on the floor, and Yoo-jin’s brow furrowed.

He had thought he could break the formation and return things to normal or that he was inside a formation, but instead, he had summoned something.

Roar!

Eventually, something escaped completely from the pattern and appeared as a giant body, breaking the cabin.

“Could it be…”

Yoo-jin stared wide-eyed and swallowed a hollow breath.

“One of the Four Guardians, the White Tiger, from Mount Kunlun. Why…?”

It was indeed the White Tiger, a divine beast and one of the Four Guardians reputed to protect Mount Kunlun, a place said to be inhabited by immortals.

He had only heard of the Four Guardians through paintings and rumors.

Originally, the Kunlun Sect among the Nine Martial Factions admired the legendary Mount Kunlun and was formed in its honor, though they had no actual ties to Mount Kunlun.

That’s why even the Kunlun Sect had never really seen an immortal or one of the Four Guardians, yet here was the White Tiger before him.

“Purr, where is this place?”

The White Tiger shook its giant body and looked around the unfamiliar scenery.

The spacious cabin looked almost like a chicken coop due to the White Tiger’s size.

“This… this can’t be.”

Swipe. Swipe.

Yoo-jin stamped his foot over various parts of the pattern drawn beneath him.

If this pattern really was summoning the Guardian Gods, then the right thing to do was to erase the pattern to stop the summoning.

“Hmm? You are…”

The White Tiger, sensing a presence, looked down and squinted at Yoo-jin.

***

“Child, who are you?”

The White Tiger spoke to Yoo-jin below with a thunderous voice.

“I am Heaven… Urgh.”

Yoo-jin naturally started to introduce himself as Heavenly demon but staggered as a sudden headache surged.

“This… what is this…?”

The source of the headache was the memories of the body Yoo-jin had entered.

Yoo-jin felt severe pain as memories seemed to force their way into his head.

Eventually, as all the memories entered Yoo-jin’s mind, he looked dazed and stared at the floor.

“I asked who you are.”

Rumble.

Frustrated by Yoo-jin’s pause in responding, the White Tiger moved to get up.

“Stop, the house will collapse.”

Suddenly.

Yoo-jin warned the moving White Tiger that the house would collapse, and the White Tiger abruptly stopped.

“If… if these memories are correct…”

Yoo-jin, having stopped the White Tiger, picked up a booklet lying on the floor and looked at it.

Although the characters were unfamiliar, Yoo-jin was able to read them thanks to the memories of the body he was in, and he realized what the body had been trying to do before he entered it.

“He tried to summon the soul of a magician powerful enough to leave a name in history…”

Furthermore, the pattern drawn on the floor was a magic circle, and the magic bound within it was meant to summon souls and spirits.

“Instead of the magician’s soul, it was my soul that was summoned. And instead of a spirit, one of the Four Guardians was summoned…”

Enduring the pain, Yoo-jin, armed with the memories of the body he had gained, suddenly felt his legs weaken as he grasped the entirety of the situation.

He had lived through many situations, but he had never imagined that he would end up in another world.

“This place is called Seifran… and the artery of this body was severed because I couldn’t control the power…?”

Due to this, the young child who was the original owner of the body died from excessive bleeding.

At the same time, the soul of Heavenly Demon had seeped into the body.

Fortunately, he had now performed acupressure to stop the bleeding, but the original owner of the body did not know the technique and hadn’t expected to die.

“Ha…?”

Yoo-jin closed his eyes and sighed deeply.

Although he could understand the situation logically, it was hard for him to accept it emotionally.

Then.

Roar.

The giant White Tiger that had burst out of the cabin suddenly emitted a blue light and began to shrink in size.

“Repeat what you just said. What is a magician, and what is a spirit?”

“Heh…”

Yoo-jin chuckled as he saw the now very small White Tiger before him.

The giant White Tiger had suddenly turned into a very small cat.

“A cat with white patterns… this is indeed a rare sight.”

He had seen civets and cats before, but this was his first time seeing a cat with white stripes.

“Did one of the Four Guardians, who are supposed to protect Mount Kunlun, end up here by accident?”

“Hmm? You… you are indeed a martial artist.”

“Did you just realize that? You should have noticed when I mentioned the Four Guardians.”

“I was eating when suddenly light burst out from beneath my feet, and I fell into the light. And when I finally escaped from that space, I found myself here.”

Yoo-jin nodded as he listened to the White Tiger’s story.

It was natural for him to be summoned if even the divine beasts were forcibly summoned.

However, unlike himself, who had closed his eyes and found himself here when he opened them, the White Tiger had fallen into some kind of space.

“I am Heavenly Demon.”

“Hmm?!”

The White Tiger twitched its eyebrows at Heavenly Demon’s words.

“You… you’re the murderous demon, Heavenly Demon?”

“Do you know me?”

Yoo-jin felt puzzled by the White Tiger’s reaction and asked a question.

It seemed like the White Tiger knew him, but he had never met the White Tiger before.

He had never even been near Mount Kunlun, where rumors said it was located, nor had he seen any of the Four Guardians.

How could the White Tiger possibly know him?

“Did you call me to this place?”

“No, it was this body.”

Shake shake.

Yoo-jin shook his arm in response to the White Tiger’s question.

It made sense that the White Tiger, lacking the memories of the body like himself, would not know where it was or what it had experienced.

Eventually, Yoo-jin calmed the White Tiger and shared all the information he knew with it.

“So… so this place is…”

“Yes, this isn’t the Central Plains martial world; it’s a place called Seifran. We were forcibly brought here by magic.”

The White Tiger looked at the void with an expression of disbelief.

How could it believe it?

It was hard enough to believe with the memories of the body, let alone for a divine beast that had experienced such an event.

“Then… then redraw that magic… magic circle!”

The White Tiger, startled, stuttered as it pointed to the magic circle Yoo-jin had described.

If it truly was summoned through a magic circle as Yoo-jin said, couldn’t redrawing the magic circle take them back?

Swipe. Swipe.

Reluctantly, Yoo-jin followed the White Tiger’s suggestion, dabbing his finger with blood to reconnect the magic circle he had erased.

However, there was no reaction now.

“Why is there no reaction?”

“What do you want me to do about it? I was dragged here just like you.”

Sigh.

The White Tiger sighed deeply with its small body and shook its head, while Yoo-jin, on the other hand, breathed a sigh of relief inwardly.

He had redrawn the magic circle as the White Tiger suggested, but he had been worried that another Guardian or some other being might appear.

“That small body summoned me and you…”

“This child had lived a pitiful life only to die like this.”

Yoo-jin looked at his hands, feeling sorry for the original owner of the body.

His body belonged to the youngest son of Seifran’s greatest magical family, the Bediya family.

Yet, even at the age of 15, he was unable to form even a 1st circle and was despised and ignored within his family.

Typically, one would form the 1st circle by age 8, and at the latest by 11, but he had failed to do so.

Because of this, he was ostracized within his family and lived alone in this remote cabin far from the main family home.

Moreover, the original owner of the body had resorted to forbidden summoning magic using his own blood as a medium.

“A murderer feeling sorry for someone, that’s really funny.”

“You, a little cat, have no idea what kind of life I’ve lived.”

Yoo-jin casually countered the White Tiger’s remarks.

Even though he was known as a murderer, his heart had not turned evil.

“What?! A… a cat?!”

The White Tiger bristled its tail and growled in response to Yoo-jin’s words.

If it had been its original size, it might have been frightening, but now, as a small cat, it was more cute than scary.

“Of course, it would be scary if it returned to its original form.”

Ignoring the growling White Tiger, Yoo-jin walked towards a mirror.

Blond hair and pale green eyes.

His name was Eugene Bediya, the youngest son of the magical Bediya family.

“What are you going to do?”

“Do about what?”

Yoo-jin turned around to the White Tiger’s voice coming from behind him.

“Is there no way to go back? You’d want to go back, wouldn’t you?”

Yoo-jin looked out the window.

“Go back…?”

The world of the Central Plains martial arts where he was born and raised.

“I am not going back.”

“What?! Why not?”

“I am already dead by the hands of the Martial Alliance.”

“You died?”

The White Tiger was shocked to hear this new information.

That the infamous Heavenly Demon was dead?

Sigh…

Yoo-jin sighed deeply and sat down at the table, then shared his life story and the choices he made in the end.

There was nothing special to tell—just about learning Heavenly Killing Arts, why he became Heavenly Demon, and why he chose death.

“Hmm… this is a new story.”

The White Tiger showed a reaction of fascination after hearing all of Yoo-jin’s words.

Heavenly Demon’s notoriety had reached even Mount Kunlun.

He was an incredibly strong fighter who wouldn’t die even if all the leaders of the Nine Martial Factions attacked him, a murderer who killed every notable being he encountered.

And there were tales of him wiping out even the innocent.

However, hearing the story directly from Heavenly Demon himself, the information was quite different from what the White Tiger had heard.

Of course, it was true he had killed many warriors, but according to Heavenly Demon, he had only killed those who attacked him.

“It’s hard to believe everything, but the truth seems to emanate from your words.”

Though Heavenly Demon might be defending himself with lies, who was the White Tiger to judge?

As one of the Four Guardian Spirits, he could somewhat discern whether someone was lying or not.

“So you’re not going back?”

“Yes, I will start a new life here.”

If this was a new opportunity given to him, he wouldn’t live as he had before.

How lonely and isolated had his life been?

Even now, although he had been ousted from his family for not being able to form even a 1st circle, he actually planned to relearn martial arts rather than magic.

“From now on, instead of being a murderer, I’ll become a hero.”

Yoo-jin muttered to himself as he looked at his hands.

The life the original owner of the body had hoped for: to stand at the pinnacle in the world of Seifran, respected and admired by many.

That was the body’s wish.

And it suited the new life goals of Heavenly Demon as well.

If in his previous life he received glares wishing for his death as a murderer, in this life, he wanted to receive respect and admiration.

This was Yoo-jin’s goal.

“Once you make up your mind, everything falls into place.”

Yoo-jin suddenly rose from his chair and walked to the wardrobe.

Thanks to the memories of the body, he had inherited all memories and knowledge, so there was no problem in finding things or living in this world.

“By the way, this body’s name was Eugene…”

His original name was Baek Yoo-jin, and his name in Seifran was also Eugene.

Was it a coincidence?

Was it a coincidence that his name in the Central Plains, Yoo-jin (流進), and the name of the possessed body, Eugene, sounded the same?

Of course, having the same name felt less strange.

If it had been a different name, others might call him, and he might not respond immediately, but since both Yoo-jin (流) and Eugene are the same, he could respond right away.

“Hey, Yoo-jin (流進). Then what about me?”

“Eugene.”

“What?”

“My name from now on is not Yoo-jin (流進) but Eugene. Eugene Bediya.”

“Yoo-jin or Eugene, it’s all the same… Anyway, Eugene. Then what about me?”

The White Tiger looked at Eugene with a dazed expression.

It’s great that Yoo-jin is starting a new life in the world of Seifran.

He could support that.

But what about himself?

“How about you live here too?”

“You call that a solution!”

The White Tiger snapped at Eugene’s suggestion.

“Is it okay for a Guardian to disappear?”

“If a Guardian dies or disappears, a new one will take its place, but…”

“Then isn’t that settled?”

Even so, how could he just step down from being a Guardian without actually dying?

“With this body, there’s nothing I can do.”

Not only can he not form a 1st circle, he also lacks mana and his original internal energy.

That’s why even if the White Tiger wanted to return, there was nothing Eugene could do to help.

“If you really want to go back, help me.”

“Help you?”

“Yes.”

Once he regained some of his strength, there might be a way.

-Crash!

The tip of the parasol violently scraped the ground.

“When are you coming?”

A parasol at night.

It was Elizabeth who grumbled about this oddly mismatching combination.

“We are way past the scheduled time, and outside, the golems are bustling. Could it be that he’s been caught? It’s troubling, and of course, they’ll be looking for the caster of the invisibility spell too.”

-Crack.

It’s a bad habit.

The act of bringing one’s nails to one’s mouth, unable to overcome anxiety.

Under the clear moonlight.

Her trembling eyelashes looked pitiful.

“Since it has come to this, we might need to prepare to cut our losses.”

She was muttering to herself, unaware that the person concerned was right behind her.

‘The effectiveness of the invisibility magic is certain.’

Even the caster could not properly see, and using the thief’s footsteps, I came so close without Elizabeth noticing.

The pink-haired Elizabeth felt a gentle hand settle on her shoulder.

“Ugh!”

“Aaaaah!”

Her face, filled with surprise and confusion, became clearly visible after a startled scream.

Thanks to that, a tooth even came off the fingernail she had been biting.

“Hehe, invisibility magic is quite something. To be able to see such a raw reaction!”

It’s something one would imagine doing at least once if they could turn invisible!

A deep sense of satisfaction emerged from witnessing such a pure shock, almost 99%.

“You…!”

Elizabeth’s face turned red as she swung the parasol toward me.

The swing, filled with magical power, quickly dispelled the invisibility.

-You’ve become quite accustomed to this. You truly have a knack for it.

Elizabeth’s shadow spoke freely, soon standing on its own two feet, slowly regaining its color.

“So, Frost Mane, how did it feel to use invisibility magic for the first time?”

“It’s really fun. It would be very effective for ensuring security. Could I possibly ask for it again next time?”

Although it was just teasing Elizabeth for now, it was indeed useful.

No, not just useful, it matched me too well.

How to deliver the stolen holy sword to Oparn.

How to secretly meet with Camilla.

All these concerns could be blown away in an instant.

“…Absolutely not! I know what you would do! You would probably engage in perverted acts.”

“Perverted acts? What do you think I would do?”

“I wouldn’t utter such irrational and immoral acts!”

Elizabeth, who lost all her ladylike composure, shouted.

In the moment of wondering what she was talking about, I saw her face turn even redder than before.

“…What exactly are you imagining? No, don’t tell me… How disgraceful, Lady Elizabeth.”

“Me, what I—!”

“In front of me, who can taste emotions, do you intend to lie?”

“Ugh…! I was just curious what kind of face Lucy would make when she’s alone!”

Thinking she couldn’t fool me, Elizabeth hesitated before revealing her thoughts.

Of course, she was just thinking and not actually planning to act on it.

It was indeed the perfect situation to tease her.

“Ah, your intentions seem very impure.”

“…”

Elizabeth, fanning her face with her hand, caused a snicker to escape from me.

“Don’t worry. Even without relying on such magic, I’ll find a time when it’s just the two of us. By then, you’ll have seen the unguarded face of Lady Luciana to your heart’s content.”

I do understand that feeling.

It’s not like I haven’t had similar thoughts about always seeing the perfect Luciana in a more relaxed state!

Just imagining it is enjoyable, isn’t it?

Of course, it’s just a momentary illusion.

How could I expose the private life of my favorite character!

This is paparazzi trash talk, not the words of a true fan!

“Enough about that! By the way, why are you so late? You’ve delayed too much.”

She tried to change the subject, her face still flushed with embarrassment, perhaps it’s time to stop.

“Ah, I got involved in an interesting incident. Your invisibility magic was a big help.”

Right after I stole the replica of the holy sword, a fanatic appeared.

Even the brilliant feat of deceiving him…

Both Bathory and Elizabeth should have applauded after hearing all that, but their reaction was unexpected.

“You really are reckless. How could you rely solely on flimsy invisibility magic in the midst of such chaos!”

“…Well, it’s kind of typical of you.”

According to the wizards, magic cast on a person could be canceled with just a slight shock.

“Well, the sword even brushed me, but he still couldn’t see me.”

“…Just like Eliz, it seems invisibility magic suits you well. It’s curious, considering you’re clumsy at using it.”

Bathory shook her head and then firmly grabbed my hand.

“Right now, your constitution matches the magic and you got away safely, but be careful in the future. …No, knowing you, you’ll act on your own anyway. If so, let me be by your side to protect you when you do.”

Was it because we were apart for a moment?

Her grip on my hand grew tighter.

“Ouch! That hurts!”

“S-sorry! I forgot about your frail body and…”

My hand enclosed in hers almost got crushed too.

“Phew, is that all then? I’m leaving?”

It seemed like she had brushed off the earlier embarrassment from her memory.

Elizabeth, who briefly looked disdainfully at the farce between the master and the collaborator, stood up.

No, judging by her reddened ears, she seemed to be trying to escape.

“Where are you going? We still need to discuss our future plans, please sit back down.”

“…It’s already five in the morning! I need to catch some sleep! Have you forgotten that I have my first class tomorrow?!”

“Have some tea or coffee.”

Staying up all night is nothing big.

Forgetting about assignments, I enjoyed “Under the Chandelier” for three days and nights with a can of caffeinated drinks—it was a piece of cake for me.

Of course, it might be a bit different for others.

“You might not need sleep being a demon, but I do!”

“Come on, don’t make such weak excuses.”

Tasks need to be completed, regardless.

Even if someone shows a clear dislike for participating, it’s the duty of the group project leader to keep things moving.

“Still, it’s better to have everyone move voluntarily rather than by force.”

“In a few days, I’ll arrange a private meeting with Lady Luciana.”

“…What plan have you concocted? What is my role?”

Everyone’s actions are driven by desire.

Seeing her unwittingly fall into the trap brought a smile to my face.

***

After everyone had left and only the two of them remained in the room,

Bathory sighed as she looked at her disciple shrinking the book with coffee.

“I’ve heard that drink reduces sleep. Isn’t this overdoing it?”

“Ha, what are you talking about? Coffee is the fuel for people.”

“Fuel? You’re making strange, incomprehensible noises again.”

Setting aside his odd choice of words, she voiced the question that had been on her mind for a while.

“Was the reason you called Eliz to use the invisibility magic?”

“Well, yes. Thanks to that, we now have connections with the cultists of the disaster church. Isn’t that a cause for celebration?”

“That may be so, but I don’t understand. Aside from the disaster cult, with your abilities, stealing the holy sword without invisibility magic should have been no problem, right?”

Instead of answering, he just chuckled.

“If I said it was to use up a vague wish, would you believe me?”

“You’d go to great lengths, wouldn’t you? Unless you intend to drain every last drop.”

She’d been caught up in his absurdities more than once.

He closed his eyes for a moment, seemingly contemplating whether to explain further.

“…Since it’s just Bathory here, and there’s no one else around, I suppose it’s okay to tell you why I involved Lady Elizabeth.”

Then, with his eyes narrowing,

Truly demonic.

A predatory intensity mixed into his gaze.

“Our alliance with her is nominal, but a nominal alliance is meaningless. …Do you know how a bee caught in a spider’s web gets eaten?”

“……”

“Struggling, it slowly gets bound. It touches more of the web, binding itself without realizing that its neck is tightening. Of course, the spider spins more web while the bee is unaware.”

A chill ran up Bathory’s spine as he unknowingly wrapped his arms around himself.

Using the pretext of the descendant of the warrior’s time as bait,

Under the guise of a wish,

Her disciple had undoubtedly lured her into his domain step by step, starting with the easiest tasks.

To slowly crumble her psychological defenses from underneath.

Eventually, for more personal and dangerous ‘favors’.

“Poor Eliz.”

“Poor? It’s just a stage where a superficial alliance becomes a true alliance.”

Batori quickly averted her gaze, as if to deny that she too was caught in the web.

* * *

“Hans? You look tired. Did you have trouble sleeping last night?” Luciana asked, her gaze filled with concern.

Indeed, I was a bit tired.

“It’s the first class after all. The thought of meeting the prestigious faculty had me nervous.”

“Pfft. You, who stood bold in front of my father, that doesn’t seem like something you would say,” Luciana replied, her sincerity apparently lacking, as she looked unconvinced.

“Perhaps you were looking forward to it a bit as well, Lady Luciana?” I noted, seeing through her efforts to hide it with makeup—the subtle darkness beneath her lovely eyes and the small veins in her pupils.

“…You caught me. Indeed, I was also somewhat looking forward to it.

“Is it the class?”

“Partly, yes…” Luciana suddenly gazed out the window, her mind seemingly far away.

“But more than that, it’s the time I could spend with the prince.”

It was fortunate that Luciana was looking out the window.

If we had been facing each other as usual, she would have seen my stiff smile.

“…I thought you felt slighted by the prince.”

“That too, you noticed. It would be hard to hide anything from you, given your knack for reading others.”

It wasn’t just a guess; I had seen it.

Despite the presence of the Emperor and Luciana, the prince’s attitude had been utterly cold.

‘Just thinking about it makes me angry. It’s clear there’s something wrong with his eyes.’

Even afterwards, the prince had ignored her and even asked the saintess to dance.

As strong and mature as Luciana was, it must have been a painful experience.

Yet, her demeanor remained gentle.

“Don’t look at me like that. A family alliance isn’t going to crumble over something so trivial,” she said, smiling faintly after catching my gaze.

“As the prince said, it’s cold because we’ve never been involved before. We can start making pleasant memories and connections from now on.”

“I think so too,” I replied, saying the opposite of what I truly felt, and quietly bowed my head.

‘Luciana, your path should only be filled with roses. Only beautiful memories should adorn it.’

The prince, who brought her painful memories and even ruin, should just stay out of the way.

Thus, I was resolved to continue supporting her happy academy life.

“Can you help make such a future possible, Hans?”

“I am always on your side, Lady Luciana.”

Pleased with my response, Luciana smiled faintly, her eyes filled with melancholy.

“Good. You’ve always done well, even in the North, so I trust you.”

“You flatter me too much.”

“Then, since class will start soon, let’s move. Let’s summarize the basic information about the first class.”

As she finished speaking, a status window flashed before my eyes.

[Quest Arrival!]

[NPC ‘Luciana Speda’ has achieved overwhelming entrance exam scores and is ranked first in her year.]

[However, the top position is always threatened by challengers.]

[As ‘Luciana Speda’s’ loyal servant, assist her in maintaining her top rank until the end of the semester.]

[Reward: ?]

[Penalty: Increase in Luciana Speda’s destruction progress]

What is this now?

‘I was going to do that even without the quest. Not just from the North, but as a dedicated servant at the academy, it’s my first task.’

Luciana naturally deserves to shine brilliantly from the highest place.

However, it’s strange that the penalty involves not just a drop in reputation from the North, but directly leading to Luciana’s destruction.

I quickly pulled out a notebook from my pocket.

‘With the ticking time bomb that is the prince, I certainly can’t afford to increase the destruction progress with this.’

The densely written letters in the notebook were the game information I had organized using my memory before coming here.

Naturally, most of it was about the main stage of the game, this academy.

“The first class for A class is a major in Knight Studies, ‘Practical Combat and Dueling.’ The instructor is someone named Marks.”

“Hmm?”

At my answer, she tilted her head to the left, puzzled.

I had felt it repeatedly, but the raw emotion she subtly expresses is quite dangerous.

…For the heart.

‘Is this the natural danger?’

While I was indulging in my admiration for the beautiful Luciana, as usual.

“A mistake uncharacteristic of someone who strives for perfection. Have you not determined which family he is from?”

“No, Marks is a commoner. Originally, he was not granted a last name.”

…Huh. A commoner as an academy professor?

A noble, especially a young lady from a ducal family, being taught by a mere commoner.

Surely, some would find that fact shameful.

“He must be quite skilled to hold a position here, overcoming many nobles. It will be worth learning from him.”

But where was Luciana ever just an ordinary figure?

Even as a girl, she was amidst soldiers and knights who were commoners.

The expectation shining in her eyes like stars in her bright blue eyes.

For her, only one thing mattered.

Is he highly skilled or not?

“I am impressed by your discernment, Lady Luciana, which does not discriminate based on status, but there is something you should be cautious about.”

“So, you have even grasped the professor’s personality in the meantime. Tell me what you know.”

“They might not take your kindness at face value.”

“Hmm?”

Indeed, I was about to meet a professor who was not only a commoner but also a stubborn old-school type, something neither Luciana nor most of the A class nobility had ever encountered.

Of course.

He and I were old acquaintances.

Ben and Hyun-soo chatted for several hours.

Strategist Pan watched their conversation with a small smile.

‘It seems he’s enjoying himself.’

Pan realized.

Hyun-soo would use the excuse of being friends to meet with Ben.

And Barad would agree to this.

‘Barad must have realized that we would try to take Hyun-soo to our side.’

Both Pan and Ben truly understand what the beginning of peace offered by Barad was.

And Hyun-soo found his friendship with Ben quite enjoyable.

Now, Hyun-soo could freely proceed with quests given by Ben and explore many things existing within the Kingdom of Praham.

“May I come in?”

Frak’s voice was heard from outside.

Hyun-soo had yet to receive a reward.

Frak brought something very precious wrapped in cloth.

Unveiling the cloth revealed two fruits.

[You have obtained the Golden Apple of the Minor World Tree.]

[You have obtained the Grape of the Minor World Tree.]

One was the most appealing golden apple borne by the Minor World Tree.

“It’s best to eat that apple right away.”

As per Ben’s advice, Hyun-soo immediately bit into the apple.

Crunch-

The juice was much sweeter than that of a normal apple.

[You have eaten the Golden Apple of the Minor World Tree.]

[All stats increase by 1%.]

The apple had an incredibly powerful effect.

Increasing all stats by 1% was overwhelmingly more significant than gaining a fixed number of stats.

Especially considering Hyun-soo’s current comprehensive stats were quite high, this one apple effectively raised over 50 stats.

But the surprise didn’t stop there.

[You will learn about the True World Tree.]

[Your level is too low.]

“……!”

Consumers of the golden apple seem to get a hint.

‘It was strange indeed.’

A World Tree is a World Tree, but what is a Minor World Tree?

Hyun-soo recalled the too-beautiful Minor World Tree.

‘That there exists a real World Tree somewhere, far more vast and powerful.’

The power of that material was meant to be greater than that of the Minor World Tree.

And the grapes of the Minor World Tree totaled five.

Each had different buff effects.

One increased experience acquisition by 50% and artifact drop rate by 50%.

Another maximized skill ability.

One allowed for skills to be activated twice in a row.

Another maximized all stats.

The last effect had the power to instantly recover about 60% of HP and MP.

‘These grapes alone could be worth 30,000 gold…?’

That’s about 30 million won in Korean currency.

Given their buff utility, there’s a reason they’re valued so highly.

Even the highest quality potions only restore 30% of HP. But these grapes could simultaneously recover 60% of HP and MP.

‘Most importantly, there’s no cooldown period for using these consumables.’

The absence of a reuse time for such consumables was tremendous. It meant they could be consumed immediately if necessary.

Ben stood up, saying, “Now, I will pass on the Ghost Step to you.”

Hyun-soo followed Ben to the training room, his heart pounding with anticipation.

‘The Ghost Step of His Majesty Ben is a completely different power from His Majesty Barad’s Sword King’s Swordsmanship.’

Though both were legendary powers, the Sword King’s swordsmanship was a comprehensive skill with multiple chapters, while Ben’s Ghost Step was a single skill.

‘A single skill that is overwhelmingly superior.’

Moreover, Hyun-soo’s level was not yet comparable to Korea’s high-rankers.

‘We haven’t clashed yet, but it might happen sooner than later.’

In such situations, Ben’s Ghost Step could prove to be a significant escape route.

Upon reaching the training room, there were about twenty soldiers present.

“I will show you only once, so watch carefully. All of this will happen within 1 second.”

1 second?

Hyun-soo was puzzled. 1 second was an incredibly short amount of time, almost instantaneous.

Ben walked forward in front of the soldiers, hands clasped behind his back, and activated it without a word.

Ghost Step.

1 second passed.

Hyun-soo doubted his own eyes.

‘What, what did I just see?’

There was no sound to Hyun-soo’s ears, as if a ghost had passed by.

Yet, Hyun-soo did not miss Ben flashing past like a bolt of lightning in that 1 second.

Soon, unlike Ben, who returned to his relaxed stance, fourteen out of the twenty soldiers screamed simultaneously.

Some seemed to have been struck in the abdomen and flew up; others stepped back as if hit in the solar plexus, and some dropped their weapons to the ground.

Each of the fourteen soldiers was affected differently, either struck or disarmed.

Ben, adjusting the sleeve of his robe, said nonchalantly, “That is the Ghost Step.”

“……!”

Hyun-soo hypothesized.

‘If those had been enemy knights instead of soldiers, and if His Majesty Ben had been wielding a spear…’

In that mere moment, fourteen of them would have been dead.

[You have learned the Ghost Step.]

It was indeed different from learning from Sword King Barad. At that time, Barad adjusted his posture one by one and trained for days.

But now, the skill was simply acquired.

(Ghost Step)

Active Skill

Grade: Legendary

Mana Cost: 1,000

Cooldown: 10 minutes.

Level: None.

· Moves according to the trajectory planned in your mind in an instant of 1 second.

· Since it moves only as planned upon activation, control is not easy.

· After activation, movement speed and attack speed are not listed because they are like a ghost.

· Leaves an afterimage when striking.

· A training period of 3 days applies, during which all cooldowns and mana costs are ignored.

Hyun-soo understood from the skill’s description.

‘It entirely depends on how I lead it.’

The mentioned trajectory. Ben’s movement in just 1 second was indeed seamless.

‘A trajectory is ultimately the line of movement.’

Ben, hands still clasped behind his back, said, “Try it on me.”

Taking a deep breath, Hyun-soo received a wooden sword from one of the soldiers.

[Ghost Step]

The moment he activated it, Hyun-soo felt an eerie stillness descend in that fleeting moment.

He created a trajectory using the visible surroundings.

And then, immediately.

With a flurry of motion, Hyun-soo swung the wooden sword towards Ben’s chest, aimed for the back, and then attempted to strike down from above in rapid succession.

But he ended up rolling on the floor.

His trajectory had gotten tangled.

Ben chuckled smugly at the fallen Hyun-soo.

“It won’t be easy. The more you practice, the more attempts you’ll make, but there’s a faster and easier method.”

Ben was indeed a crafty old man.

“3 days. If you can precisely create four trajectories within that time, I’ll add another 0.1 second.”

The easier method he mentioned was increasing the casting time.

0.1 second might not seem much, but for the Ghost Step, it’s not negligible.

An increase of 0.1 second would make executing the Ghost Step a bit easier.

“Of course, you’ll only get it if you manage to achieve that.”

Ben wasn’t highly optimistic about the possibility.

By Ben’s standards, it was doubtful even ordinary knights could create four trajectories after a week of practice.

That’s how significant the Ghost Step was, though its power varied with the user.

Then,

“What if it’s more than four times?”

Hyun-soo, getting up, had a determined look in his eyes.

If not 0.1 seconds, but 0.3 or even 0.4 seconds.

That amount could allow for an additional strike.

Ben laughed at that.

“Heh, if it’s more than four times, I’ll add 0.1 second for each time you manage to do it.”

Ding!

[Quest: Ben’s Test.]

Grade: A

Restrictions: Proposed by Ben.

Reward: 0.1 second increase per action.

Penalty for Failure: Decrease in affinity with Ben.

Description: Ben believes it’s incredibly difficult to execute the Ghost Step more than four times in 3 days. Prove him wrong and earn his recognition.

A quest had appeared.

Hyun-soo felt a surge of motivation.

Ben and all the soldiers left.

After they had gone, Hyun-soo activated it immediately.

[Ghost Step]

He moved according to his trajectory.

1st, 2nd, 3rd attempts…

After tumbling around, Hyun-soo’s movements got tangled again after attempting it ten times, concluding that he could reliably perform only twice.

Trying to go beyond three times tangled his trajectory.

‘With effort, three can be overcome.’

Hyun-soo had spent days and nights without sleep working as a blacksmith.

And, of course, Ben’s idea of four times included the notion of effort.

But Hyun-soo wanted to show perfection beyond what Ben had envisioned.

Hyun-soo kept repeating the process.

After 24 hours of practice, he managed to perfectly execute three actions.

‘Good, at this pace…’

He thought he could manage more than six times within three days.

But then Hyun-soo’s expression twisted.

[You have been afflicted with Physical Fatigue.]

[You have been afflicted with Mental Fatigue.]

Hyun-soo was puzzled.

‘Why are these notifications appearing already?’

Such notifications usually came when he was blacksmithing overnight, from the second to the third day.

But it had come after just one day this time.

And typically, after a day from these notifications, he would usually faint.

‘Because it’s an unfamiliar task repeated…?’

Mental fatigue was likely.

And the physical fatigue…

‘Surely…!’

Hyun-soo realized then.

Activating it once meant his body moved 3-4 times according to the trajectory.

Moving along those trajectories, Hyun-soo didn’t fully realize because it was skill activation.

That he moved so fast and intensely four times within one second.

But his body felt otherwise.

The fatigue accumulated from such movement.

‘That’s why more than four times…’

Hyun-soo came to understand the reason Ben had mentioned the fourth attempt.

If Hyun-soo had activated Ghost Step a hundred times, in reality, he would have moved about 300 to 400 times.

It was then that Hyun-soo felt the spasms that were finally making themselves known.

His legs, arms, and entire body were experiencing intermittent tension.

After taking a brief rest, Hyun-soo repeated the Ghost Step.

However, the fatigue that had accumulated was not something that could be relieved with just a short rest.

27 hours. It was after this time that Hyun-soo was completely exhausted.

The desire to sleep, the muscles’ screams for rest.

Hyun-soo bent over, hands on his knees, panting heavily due to the quickly approaching mental and physical limits.

“Huff huff…

It’s a feeling of powerlessness he had never experienced before.

‘If I sleep, I won’t be able to complete the fourth attempt.’

He closes his eyes and breathes calmly.

Then, he starts again.

Just like Hae Mo-su said.

Even if it breaks.

Yet, he hits another limit.

And tries again.

Even if it breaks.

He chants to himself.

I can do this.

Among the countless chants.

Hyun-soo collapsed to the ground, hitting his limit.

Mental and physical fatigue had reached the point of fainting.

His body wouldn’t respond.

Thud-

Eventually, even the wooden sword he was holding was dropped.

Looking at the ceiling, he realizes there are things that can’t continue.

And then, Hyun-soo briefly closed his eyes.

Even if it breaks.

It’s a good saying.

Sometimes, even fighting until you break is not enough.

You also need to know when to be flexible.

Perhaps it’s okay to give up on this test with Ben.

Even if he gives up, the fact that Hyun-soo learned Ben’s Ghost Step doesn’t change.

And as time goes by, he will be able to use his movements more freely and eventually excel.

‘But…’

Even if there are fights you shouldn’t fight even if you break.

‘It’s a story that doesn’t apply to me, I want to keep challenging.’

Hyun-soo, who had fallen, stood up with a body that trembled intermittently.

Yes, you need to know how to break.

But that saying doesn’t fit him.

He had many challenges to overcome and people who believed in him.

That’s why even if he breaks, even if he breaks again, he will.

“Not back down.”

He tried to pick up the wooden sword he had dropped.

However, Hyun-soo felt his vision blur.

Then, something bizarre happened.

[The title “Even if it breaks” shines brightly.]

Suddenly, a thought passed through Hyun-soo’s mind.

One of the descriptions written on the title “Even if it breaks”.

‘When it is judged that you have overcome a critical moment with your own pure strength, you acquire a legendary stat ???.’

[Due to the acquisition of a legendary stat, all physical and mental fatigue is restored once.]

[You tire 20% less and feel a surge of vitality.]

Hyun-soo’s trembling body stopped.

His clouded mind cleared up.

Furthermore, he understood why he had received this notification.

‘Because the stat I acquired is related to physical and mental fatigue…!’

[You are a person with unbreakable willpower.]

[A legendary stat suitable only for you is unlocked.]

[You acquire the legendary stat: Will.]

Round 22

“Is this where you’ve been staying?”

Jae-seong looked around the dungeon interior with curious eyes, and then stepped back slightly, as if greeting a slime that had come out from tending the garden.

“Is this a slime?”

“Its name is Rookie… was it 1 or 3?”

“Uh, yes.”

“You don’t need to be so scared. Even the big ones are timid.”

Unlike me, Jae-seong had a robust build.

He had the appearance of a cozy bear, which matched his actual personality.

“Do these creatures help with the farming?”

“Yes.”

“That’s amazing. How do they farm without hands or feet?”

“Before that, did you bring everything I told you about?”

“I had to leave behind a few big items, unfortunately, but I brought the rest.”

Jae-seong showed his bag containing his cooking tools. As far as I knew, he was learning not only Korean but also Western and Japanese cuisine, and recently even Chinese cuisine, which impressed me.

“For now, the ingredients ready are cherry tomatoes, potatoes, and carrots.”

“The ingredients seem a bit odd. What about onions?”

“Oh, I’ll have to plant some of those later.”

Thinking of onions reminded me of peppers.

Essential for making spicy food.

While Jae-seong lamented, he brought over the last remaining potato, several cherry tomatoes, and carrots about the same size as the tomatoes.

As Jae-seong held the ingredients and looked them over, he tilted his head and then sniffed them.

“The tomatoes and carrots look unusual. I could only recognize the potatoes.”

“Does the unique shape interfere with cooking?”

“Not really, but if you hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have known what they were. Can I try them?”

“Sure. Of course.”

Although he had already tried the tomatoes and potatoes, I was curious to see his reaction to the freshly harvested carrots.

Jae-seong smelled them and, seeming very curious, immediately picked up a carrot bite-sized and brought it to his mouth.

Snap!

Crunch!

With a crisp sound, Jae-seong’s expression gradually stiffened. I asked with great anticipation.

“How is it?”

“…Just a moment.”

He gestured to wait and then closed his eyes to savor the carrot. After a while, he didn’t speak.

About five minutes passed.

Just when I thought it was time for him to start talking again, he put another carrot in his mouth.

“Hey, Jae-seong. Speak before you eat, will you?”

Despite my words, Jae-seong continued to chew the carrot earnestly with his eyes closed. Finally, after waiting a bit longer, he opened his eyes and let out a deep sigh.

“This is a bit tricky.”

“Why? What’s the problem?”

His initial response sounded negative, so I asked urgently. However, my worry was in vain as Jae-seong suddenly started rummaging through his bag.

“I’ve got an idea! But there’s too much!”

“Stop scaring me. I thought something was wrong.”

By now, the slimes working below had also crept up and began circling around my younger brother, curiously watching him.

Seeing the slimes, Jae-seong, who had initially recoiled, now seemed utterly unconcerned and focused solely on his task.

“Since I’m not sure, I brought various ingredients to try. Ah, it’s too bad there’s no kitchen…”

Caught up in his own world, Jae-seong muttered to himself and quickly began to prepare, then asked me,

“Bro! Where can I get water?”

“Water comes out from below.”

“Then I guess we’ll have to make it down there. Help me move this, please.”

After moving Jae-seong’s tools together, we seriously began the cooking process. Unlike when I made boiled potatoes, the prospect of a proper meal inadvertently raised my expectations.

“Huh? What’s that?”

“Slime.”

Jae-seong, who had just passed a still synthesizing slime, started cooking.

“I thought about what to make based on the ingredients you mentioned.”

“Curry?”

“Yes.”

The familiar yellow powder caught my eye.

It was turmeric powder.

Squirm?

The slimes, now all gathered and watching Jae-seong with curious gestures, seemed interested in the unfamiliar scent of the spices.

“Ah, there aren’t enough potatoes. Don’t we have more?”

“Um… maybe we can harvest some more soon?”

“For now, since we have only one potato, I’ll make just one serving. I brought a regular potato too. Let’s make it with that and compare.”

Soon, as Jae-seong began preparing the ingredients, I watched blankly. The slimes also lined up quietly beside me and started watching.

Tap tap tap tap!

With flashy hand movements, the ingredients gradually took on a form suitable for cooking.

“Bro, the tomatoes should be ready by now. Turn off the heat and take them out of the water and cool them in cold water.”

“Okay.”

I took the boiled cherry tomatoes out of the water and cooled them in cold water. Then, following Jae-seong’s instruction to peel them, I scraped off the thin skins of the tomatoes.

Squirm!

“Here.”

I gave a peeled cherry tomato to Mark2, who seemed impatient, thinking the food was already ready.

After gobbling it down, he made a gesture, seemingly confused if it was right.

“It’s not finished yet. Just wait a bit.”

After finishing with all the tomatoes, Jae-seong took them as he was frying the other ingredients.

“I’m a bit worried. I hope the flavor isn’t too strong.”

Jae-seong murmured what I had vaguely thought. But the smell of the frying was unbelievably good.

Saliva built up involuntarily, and the waiting slimes bounced their bodies excitedly with anticipation.

Gurgle! Gurgle!

“Now, if I add the curry here…”

As the tomatoes melted into a bubbling pot, Jae-seong added the curry.

“Oh? The smell is amazing?”

I had already eaten, but I was starting to feel hungry again.

However, Jae-seong just stirred the pot with a careful look.

“Just a little longer, and it’s done.”

He covered the pot and we had a moment of patience.

The slimes cutely bounced their bodies, but I told them to wait a bit longer.

“But bro.”

“Hm?”

“Do these guys eat too?”

“Of course. That’s why they’re waiting.”

“Ah…”

“Some of them eat like 10 people’s worth.”

“What should we do? I didn’t bring that much ingredients?”

“They’ve already filled up. Just let them taste it.”

I had already let them fill up while harvesting the carrots. Although it seems like these creatures could eat endlessly.

“It’s done. Finished.”

The curry was complete.

When I opened the lid, an enchanting aroma began to fill the dungeon.

“Wow, quickly, the plates. No, where’s the rice?”

“Here.”

The curry was placed on top of white rice.

Carrots, potatoes, onions, mushrooms, and even pieces of meat.

The visual was a pass, but above all, the smell made it impossible to wait any longer.

“Let’s taste it. Normally, I would need to taste the curry to check the seasoning, but this time I also resisted.”

Jae-seong offered the finished curry with eager eyes.

I scooped up a spoonful and, overwhelmed by the tantalizing aroma of the curry, placed it in my mouth.

“……!”

It was like a scene from a cooking anime I saw when I was young. I thought it was an overreaction back then and it made me laugh, but now it became reality.

Gulp.

The curry sauce assaulted my taste buds and continued to hit as it went down my throat. The aroma was beyond words.

No, the aroma was actually the highlight.

Magic cherry tomatoes, locally grown potatoes, and magic carrots.

I thought combining them might be too much, but instead, they created a synergy that exploded with fragrance.

“Ah, the curry is a bit disappointing.”

The strong personalities of the ingredients almost buried the scent of the turmeric. Maybe I should try growing turmeric myself?

“How is it? Bro! Say something!”

“It’s insane. I’m at a loss for words.”

“How can I understand if you put it that way?”

“Just try it yourself. I wonder if I’ll ever taste curry like this again in my life.”

Without hesitating, Jae-seong also took a bite of the curry. Then his eyes widened before he closed them and began to savor it.

But it’s a bit frustrating that he’s taking almost 5 minutes to taste just one bite.

“Come on, you guys have a bite too.”

While Jae-seong was analyzing the taste, I gave the waiting slimes a chance to taste it.

The slimes, showing their joy through their gestures, shivered their bodies.

“Ha ha! Is it that delicious?”

Their gestures felt so cute, it made me want to feed them more delicious things. I haven’t married or raised kids, but maybe it’s a similar feeling.

The curry was quickly gone as I fed them bite by bite.

Eventually, I had to wake Jae-seong, who was still enjoying the taste, to make curry using ordinary potatoes.

“Hmm……”

The curry made with ordinary potatoes wasn’t bad, but something was lacking.

“I should have eaten this first. It’s not as exciting.”

“Isn’t it still tasty?”

“It’s tasty, but it’s disappointing compared to the first one.”

Of course, even this would probably have people lining up if sold outside. However, the evaluation became harsh since we had just tasted something superior.

“Anyway, besides this, there are many things we can cook, so please grow some onions, green onions, and garlic for me. If possible, peppers and sesame too. It would be great to make gochujang and sesame oil.”

“Okay. These guys are experts anyway; I just need to plant them.”

So far, there had been no failed crops.

There were some that hadn’t been harvested yet, but they seemed to be growing well from the outside.

And hearing Jae-seong’s words, I became curious about what gochujang, sesame oil, doenjang, or soy sauce would taste like if made from my crops.

‘Doenjang might be a bit hard because of the need for meju blocks, but if possible, we could make soy sauce at the same time. Let’s think about it.’

As Jae-seong and I pondered, the slimes had deliciously devoured the curry made with ordinary potatoes. I made quite a lot since it was made with regular potatoes, so it was a satisfying amount for the slimes.

“They cleaned it up completely. No need for washing dishes.”

“Our kids sure eat well.”

“But when do these crops get harvested? Does it take about three or four months?”

“Huh? What are you talking about? It only takes about a week.”

“……What are you talking about? How can it only take a week to harvest crops? Oh! Are you saying it’s nearly harvest time and it will be ready in a week?”

“No. I mean, you just plant the seeds and in about a week they’re ready to harvest. Honestly, things like tomatoes and carrots seem to take about three days. Initially, it used to take two days. Now, the variety has been improved, so it takes a little longer.”

“……”

Jae-seong, at a loss for words, stared at my field.

Still, thinking within the realm of common sense, I could understand Jae-seong’s confusion.

“But bro.”

“Yeah?”

“Do the slimes work continuously without taking breaks?”

Jae-seong, seeing the slime that had finished off the curry and gone back to the field, asked as if puzzled.

“They don’t take breaks; they play.”

“What?”

“Farming isn’t work for them; it’s play. That’s how it is for them.”

“Bro. Even if you’re my brother, this sounds a bit like exploiting labor…”

“What are you talking about! Where else can you find a boss as good as me?”

I let them play in the fields to their hearts’ content, I take care of their meals every day, and I even bring them a personal chef like this! How can anyone call me an exploiter of labor!

I am a slime welfare officer!

Episode 21

Was it because I was too nervous?

I didn’t sleep at all and was fully focused on farming.

And eventually, the time for the final showdown approached.

“Should I use it now?”

Holding the copier in one hand, I saw Poooh waiting in front of me with a puzzled expression.

Nothing strange should happen to Poooh. It’s just copying, after all.

“Sigh…”

A year’s worth was contained in this single copier.

Of course, if I think about the past three stagnant years, it’s only a third of that time, but the density of time is different now than it was then.

If anything, today might be worth a month, or perhaps even a year, from back then.

Should I put it off one more day?

It wouldn’t really matter if I didn’t use it today.

A tendency to avoid it momentarily appeared, but I collected myself.

Zap!

Poooh?!

“There’s no way I’m waiting another year. I’m using it now.”

There were no other options.

Postponing would only waste precious time.

Waiting for Mark2 to reach level 10?

It would be much more beneficial to level up Poooh to 11 in the meantime and get the ball rolling.

I murmured to myself just as it was time.

“Here we go, Poooh!”

Poooh?

I didn’t hesitate and used the slime copier.

[Using slime copier.]

[Target confirmed]

The copier I was holding melted and squirmed towards Poooh, quickly expanding in volume and enveloping Poooh, then it started to glow.

“I’ve cast the dice.”

I waited slowly with a somewhat hollow feeling.

The light gradually faded. The copier fell off, and a new slime with the same appearance as Poooh emerged.

[?? Slime LV.10]

[An ordinary slime.]

[Sealed state.]

[Liquid synthesis possible.]

[Abilities: ??]

It came out exactly the same.

I didn’t expect even the question marks to be copied.

“Poooh, it’s time to merge.”

Poooh?

Poooh?

Their reactions were identical, making it confusing to differentiate between the real Poooh and the copied one.

Anyway, it’s time for the level 11 slime to launch.

[??Slime LV.10 and ??Slime LV.10 will merge.]

[The merging slimes will share all memories and experiences.]

Something was different this time.

Instead of just merging smoothly and quickly as before, it took a while, quivering as the synthesis was delayed.

“What’s going wrong?”

I watched anxiously for a while.

But there seemed to be no end in sight.

Just in case, I moved closer to check the status window when fortunately it appeared.

[Merging in progress…]

“This is the first time it’s like this.”

It wasn’t necessarily wrong, but seeing this message indicated it wasn’t a normal situation.

Is it because they’re level 10?

Or maybe because Poooh is a unique slime.

The cause was unknown. However, there seemed to be nothing I could do right now.

Squirm?

Just then, Mark2, wearing a straw hat tilted jauntily, came closer and tilted his head curiously at the merging Poooh.

Squirm?

“It’s merging. Better not touch it, just in case.”

Squirm!

He nodded his body and then shook it as if to follow him.

“Is it finally time to harvest?”

I took another look at the merging Poooh. I decided to patiently watch the still blending yellow slime.

“Tell the others not to mess with it either, just in case.”

Squirm!

Careful not to disturb Poooh, I passed by cautiously.

Following Mark2, I arrived where several slimes were gathered, busily engaged in something.

“Embergrill?”

Considering the harvest time for Layla, it had grown incredibly fast.

Not all dungeon crops are the same, but I still had some preconceptions.

“But it really has grown a lot.”

The plant was in the form of a small tree.

However, the shape of its branches was twisted, resembling vines in appearance.

Since I didn’t know how to harvest, I first observed the slimes for a moment as they used each other’s bodies like a ladder to reach the height of the Embergrill.

Growl! Growl!

They were still struggling to reach, so I immediately went over and lifted the top one with my hand.

Squirm!

The slime wriggled as if to say thank you and began to harvest the Embergrill, picking the youngest, tender shoots like plucking tea leaves.

“Wow, I can’t tell the difference.”

To my eyes, all the shoots looked the same, but they harvested some and passed over others. If I had done it, I would have certainly harvested them indiscriminately.

By helping the slimes, I was able to harvest a considerable amount of the Embergrill’s young shoots in the planted area.

Even though they harvested according to their own standards, and not all of it, it was quite a lot.

Gurgle! Gurgle—

“Hmm?”

I intended to store the harvested Embergrill, but suddenly Mark2 reacted violently.

I couldn’t exactly tell what it meant, but I set down the harvested Embergrill and watched what Mark2 was doing.

He grabbed a handful of Embergrill and began to carefully place them one by one on an empty plot near by.

“Ah! Are they trying to dry it?”

It seemed like a drying process was needed, similar to drying tea leaves. But until now, all the Embergrill I had seen and heard about were fresh, undried leaves.

‘Mark2 probably knows better, right?’

I decided to trust Mark2, who has farming skills. I was puzzled since no item marker had appeared on the harvested Embergrill, but maybe this process could turn it into an item.

The slimes all gathered and began laying out the harvested young shoots of Embergrill. However, they didn’t stop there; they each dabbed their fluids onto the laid-out shoots.

“That’s really strange.”

I had already sent their fluid to the lab for analysis, but the results showed nothing particularly unusual.

Yet, watching their actions, there seemed to be something unique about them.

The shining stones installed on the walls shone down light in place of the sun, and I watched the Embergrill dry while I took another look at Poooh, who was still quivering as the synthesis was ongoing.

It seemed a bit brighter than before, maybe?

Gurgle!

“Why again?”

After completing the Embergrill task, Mark2 pulled me again, seemingly indicating that there was more to harvest. The direction he led me suggested it was finally time for the long-awaited carrots.

These were not just ordinary carrots.

They were carrots that had been cultivated using magic-infused seeds.

“But why do they seem smaller?”

The magic-infused carrots I had harvested before were significantly larger than ordinary carrots, but these looked smaller than usual.

“That’s odd.”

Still, as long as they taste good, that’s okay.

Furthermore, the fact that their appearance was different from before already proved they were a new type of carrot, which actually made me more excited.

“Alright, everyone. If you’ve had enough rest, let’s get back to work.”

Gurgle, squirm?

The slimes, who had just finished working on the Embergrill, wriggled as if to say my statement was outrageous.

I easily passed off their gesture and led by example.

“Huh?”

As I gently dusted off the soil and checked the body of the carrot, something was odd. The exposed leafy part was smaller than before, and since it wasn’t protruding from the ground, I thought it was smaller but…

Pop!

“What is this?”

A carrot about the size of a large strawberry popped out.

I was slightly startled by the much smaller size than I had anticipated.

-Ba-bam!

[You have discovered a new crop.]

Please name it.

The same phrase obstructed my view as before.

However, I decided to first check the harvested crop.

[?? LV.1]

[A crop containing magic.]

[Harmless to humans.]

[When consumed, grants ‘Clairvoyance’ for 15 seconds.]

[When consumed, increases a small amount of magic for 3 seconds.]

“Oh?”

The increase in a small amount of magic was similar to that of cherry tomatoes. However, the clairvoyance ability on top was new.

“It feels like the effects related to vision are more enhanced.”

Honestly, I can’t say which is better, but it felt like this was nicer.

If you’re really curious, you could just try eating it yourself.

“I’ll decide the name after I eat it. Bon appétit.”

Receiving stern looks from the slimes that had gathered, I promptly bit into the carrot. It felt like eating a strawberry.

“Um?!”

But the taste was unmistakably that of a carrot.

[You can now use ‘Clairvoyance’.]

Along with the notification that the ability could be used, the concentrated carrot aroma pierced through my nose to my brain, leaving a strong impression.

“Delicious!!”

I had thought it would be tasty, but it was much tastier than expected. This was a flavor that even those who dislike carrots would greedily crave.

But the funny thing was that the taste and aroma of the carrot were distinctly intense.

“The small size is a bit of a shame, isn’t it?!”

While I was savoring the carrot, I was suddenly startled by the actions of the slimes, who were wriggling and doing something.

They dug further into the soil where I had pulled out the carrot and soon began pulling out small carrots one after another. I was at a loss for words seeing these strawberry-sized carrots pouring out like sweet potatoes or potatoes.

“It wasn’t small for no reason. Who would have thought it would change like this.”

Tomatoes just change colors vividly without much difference. Therefore, I thought carrots would only undergo that much change, but I never dreamed they would transform in this way.

“…Let’s call it ‘Magic Mini Carrot’.”

A message appeared asking if I wanted to register it immediately, and the carrot was named Magic Mini Carrot.

Considering the yield, it seemed like it wouldn’t be inferior even compared to the magic-infused carrots.

It was actually much better for eating on the go, like cherry tomatoes.

“This is addictive too.”

While eating my third one, I was personally experiencing the formidable nature of these carrots. Feeling guilty for eating alone, I told the slimes they could eat a little while working, which halved the harvest.

“Still, that’s quite a lot.”

I hadn’t weighed it yet, but it was more than the last time. That was even after setting aside some for planting.

The harvested carrots were promptly moved to the storeroom and sealed with the slime’s fluid. Somehow, the slime’s fluid felt like a cure-all, adding to its mystique as I couldn’t pinpoint why.

Squirm!

Gurgle!

Once the work was completed, it quieted down again.

While there was still no sign of Poooh’s synthesis being completed, the slimes brought me their share of the carrots and squirmed.

“What, you want me to cook again?”

Gurgle!

Squirm- squirm-!

These little guys.

They know it’s delicious.

Honestly, it feels delicious even eaten raw, but I do wonder how much tastier it could become if cooked.

“…Maybe I should call Jae-seong here permanently.”

Since he had quit his job and was waiting, and my crops were here, it seemed not a bad idea to have him live here and practice cooking with my ingredients.

While at it, I could make him a dedicated chef for the slimes, pay him a salary… He’d probably be shocked.

“If that’s the case, I should contact him first. Hold on, don’t eat yet, wait, guys.”

Strike while the iron is hot—I should call him right away.

A Change in the Wind at the Capital of the Kingdom of Praham.

The capital of the Kingdom of Praham is experiencing a wind of change.

The nobles of the Kingdom of Praham, led by strategist Pan.

Those who said that His Excellency Ben was caught up in nonsensical delusions and memories.

Those nobles were imprisoned for seven days as a penalty for their crimes.

However, there was no sign of resentment or emptiness on the faces of those imprisoned.

Instead, they unanimously decided to contribute 30% of their wealth to the national treasury.

And this was the wind of change.

“The negotiator saved us and gave us enlightenment.”

The nobles had resigned themselves to death.

But there was one who did not.

It was the blacksmith Hyun-soo.

The image of the blacksmith, who did not stop crafting even when swallowed by the fierce flames beyond the collapsed wall, was intensely imprinted.

“Even if it breaks.”

Reciting the words that represented his will, the nobles laughed.

“He is from an enemy country, but he is truly a wonderful person.”

And elsewhere.

Hundreds of knights.

Knights who served those nobles, some of whom belonged to the royal knights, while others were active in their own territories, say, “It is unforgettable. The toughness, force, and skill worthy of chivalry. I might have come to respect the blacksmith, perhaps I’ve harbored thoughts I shouldn’t have.”

“It’s alright, not just you, many knights there felt the same as you.”

The story of the negotiator is passed on from the nobles to the vassals, from the knights to the soldiers.

Surprisingly, this change is closely related to the negotiation quest received by Hyun-soo.

Negotiation represents various things and is a cornerstone for leading peace.

The greatest way to take the lead in peace was the change of heart of the people of the Kingdom of Praham.

A new story emanating from the enemy.

For Hyun-soo, who had fainted again like the unfortunate male protagonist, such notifications were spreading.

[Negotiation increases by 4%.]

[Negotiation increases by 3%.]

[Negotiation……]

[Negotiation……]

This wind of change was not faced by them alone.

Ben, the ruler of the Kingdom of Praham.

Unable to sleep late at night, he brushed the World Tree in the garden.

Swoosh-

Looking at the vast leaves scattered by the wind, he stepped out.

And he opened a door to a room.

Looking at the sleeping blacksmith Hyun-soo, he closed the door and left.

He walked to his audience chamber.

Seated in the audience chamber, Ben fell into deep thought.

“It’s not enough…….”

Ben judged so.

“The mane of Fon, the dust of fairies, orichalcum, black mithril, the claw of the Mountain King, the spear technique of Kradan…… tell me.”

These are the rewards offered by Spear Heaven Ben for the mission to save the Minor World Tree.

In fact, the Minor World Tree itself was a valuable reward.

But he wanted to give a reward for saving his beloved disciple, Frak.

However, now he judges even this to be insufficient.

Of course, everything he offered was incredibly valuable.

The materials he presented were all artifact materials forming an enormous price range, representing the blacksmith’s nation.

And then there’s Kradan spear technique.

It might seem like just an ordinary spear technique, but it represents Praham Kingdom’s spear technique.

How significant would it be for Spear Heaven to teach this?

Yet, even this was not enough.

Ben closed his eyes.

Soon, news would come.

“Your Majesty, the people are shouting your name.”

“Your Majesty, the barren land has transformed into fertile land, alleviating the kingdom’s food shortage.”

This was the great feat accomplished by Hyun-soo.

But that was not all.

Originally, Spear Heaven’s power was as follows:

[Spear Heaven Ben Lv.436]

However, it changed because of a spear crafted by Hyun-soo.

[Spear Heaven Ben Lv.465]

For a named NPC like Ben to become so powerful was an incredible event.

So, he thought.

‘What about passing on that power?’

Spear Heaven had two powers that represented him.

One was the Extreme Spear shown by Frak.

Frak showed an incomplete Extreme Spear, and the real Extreme Spear has an incredibly powerful effect.

And another secret technique of Spear Heaven unknown to the public.

Of course, the public doesn’t know.

How often would someone as powerful as Spear Heaven need to fight someone?

And it’s about winning the battle before even needing to unleash that power.

‘But passing on that power to someone other than my disciple would be a disservice.’

Ben was troubled.

“Your Majesty, may I enter?”

Then came a voice.

Soon, two men entered.

One was Frak, and the other was Pan.

Pan, who had committed a crime, voluntarily paid 50% of his wealth to the treasury.

Additionally, his noble title was downgraded by one level.

Yet, his expression seemed at ease.

The two had come for the sleepless king.

They listened to his worries.

Ben was cautious.

Very careful.

“……So, I’m thinking of passing on the Ghost Step to blacksmith Hyun-soo.”

Ben also thought that Frak might fall into a great worry for a while.

It could also cause a commotion.

‘It’s only natural.’

Frak is his beloved disciple, and Hyun-soo is a negotiator from an enemy country.

The secret technique of Spear Heaven that even he has not learned…

“Do so.”

But Frak spoke as if it were too obvious.

“It sounds like a great idea to me.”‘

Even going a step further.

It was then that Ben realized.

The wind of change was to be faced by everyone present.

“Your Majesty, the materials you offered him can be obtained with money. Moreover, the spear technique would be meaningless to him, who already possesses the Sword King’s swordsmanship. Giving him that power would be most fitting.”

Ben felt it.

Frak’s gratitude towards Hyun-soo was greater than he thought.

“Even if he masters it, it’s clear that I will win in our next duel, so what do I have to fear?”

Ben saw a future where two kings supported each other.

Through his words, one thing was clear.

Frak and Hyun-soo would become great rivals.

And now that a reward had been decided, it was time to talk about the value of the spear.

“You all saved these unworthy ones, so add another 50%.”

No one could dispute that.

And so, Pan thought a mere spear had been priced at an astonishing amount.

“Your Majesty…”

Moreover, strategist Pan was worried about Ben.

But he couldn’t voice his concerns. Soon everything was decided, and morning came.

***

“Ugh…”

Waking up, Hyun-soo looked around.

It was a luxurious bedroom.

‘What was that notification?’

The notification that he was approaching a special name.

For now, there was no way to know.

Another notification suddenly snapped Hyun-soo to attention.

[Many in the Kingdom of Praham have changed their thoughts about the negotiator.]

[The Kingdom of Praham’s national power increases by 1.2% thanks to the Minor World Tree you revived.]

[Total negotiation reached 62%.]

Though Hyun-soo had been unconscious, he could guess what these notifications meant.

‘Is the increase in national power because of the rice grains?’

Ten grains of rice significantly reducing the number of hungry people would indeed lead to an increase in national power.

“His Majesty is looking for you.”

There was another proof of change.

[Strategist Pan]

He used to look at Hyun-soo with disdain, which was natural for someone from an enemy country.

But now, he was polite and said as they walked together,

“Thank you for saving us.”

Receiving polite greetings, Hyun-soo continued to walk through the palace.

The expressions of those he encountered had completely changed.

And he thought deeply about what to request from Ben.

The things Ben promised to give for reviving the Minor World Tree.

But all that seemed too trivial now.

Finally meeting Ben, who laughed mischievously with an old man’s grumpiness,

“Let’s forget about the rewards we talked about before.”

Hyun-soo’s heart sank.

‘What did I do wrong?’

[The reward will be maximized.]

Ben smirked mischievously.

“I’ll give you something else, not those trivial things. I will pass on the Ghost Step to you.”

[Ghost Step is of legendary grade.]

Hyun-soo was astonished.

And just like when he learned swordsmanship from Barad, no skill quest popped up.

When receiving something from an NPC, sometimes a skill quest appears, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Usually, it happens when the NPC teaches and tests.

But now, Ben decided to teach without testing.

‘Legendary grade…?’

Getting a legendary grade skill unexpectedly.

Moreover, it was a secret technique of Spear Heaven, which made Hyun-soo feel it was too valuable for him.

‘It’s like an oasis to me, who is still lacking.’

Hyun-soo still had many challenges ahead.

Ghost Step would be a great help on that journey.

“I’ve also finished valuing the spear you made. I’ll give you 1.7 million gold.”

1.7 billion won in Korean currency.

It was the largest amount so far.

Hyun-soo felt he had gained a lot from this place.

The Ghost Step, the supreme Minor World Tree, and the vast sum of 1.7 billion won.

“Thank you.”

Hyun-soo bowed, waiting to be dismissed.

But strangely, Ben didn’t say anything for a while and then finally spoke.

“……Can’t you stay by my side?”

It was a proposal that should not have been made to a subject of an enemy nation.

Hyun-soo was taken aback by the words.

***

Standing by Ben’s side, Pan realized the dreaded situation had unfolded.

He understood the king’s heart.

The negotiator from the enemy country could only stay for a total of 10 days.

Hyun-soo had already spent 4 days.

In 6 days, he must leave, and their next meeting was uncertain.

‘Hyun-soo has no choice but to choose one path…’

Pan knew that path was to the Goyard Kingdom.

The person he had seen in Hyun-soo was such.

“I could grant you a title higher than a count. Can’t you become a person of Praham Kingdom?”

Ben’s words, close to a forced plea, were eventually uttered.

There was not a hint of wavering in Hyun-soo’s eyes.

“I refuse.”

That blunt refusal dug deeper into Ben’s heart.

Pan looked at the king with a bitter feeling.

Certainly, he coveted Hyun-soo’s power.

But there was something bigger.

In fact, Ben was almost resentful of Hyun-soo for his blunt refusal.

“I covet your power, but more than that, I feel a profound loneliness.”

Ben had learned and felt a lot from him and took comfort in his heart.

And for an old man like himself, how much longer would he live?

He envied Barad immensely.

He rejected the offer without a moment’s hesitation.

The higher titles and more wealth.

That was the charm Hyun-soo possessed.

That’s why he didn’t want to let him go even more.

But it was a sentiment he had to swallow.

‘I do not want to send you away…’

Yet, no way seemed apparent.

Pan couldn’t see the method either.

However, Hyun-soo alone found it.

“……Let’s stop this conversation here.”

Ben, having suppressed his desire, spoke in a cold voice.

To that, Hyun-soo, who had been submissive, spoke in a soft voice.

“Then, I will listen. I will listen to what you want to say, Your Majesty.”

Ben couldn’t understand.

How could a subject of an enemy nation listen to his words after leaving this place?

“I would like to see you not as Your Majesty’s subject or a noble of an enemy country but as someone else.”

Was there such a way?

Ben was skeptical.

Suddenly, Hyun-soo was looking at him with a warm smile.

Hearing those words, Ben’s heart eased.

Pan admired Hyun-soo’s cleverness for catching two birds with one stone in a situation where he could only choose one.

What he said to Ben.

“Please be my friend.”

With a smile, Hyun-soo looked at Ben and chuckled softly.

The lonely old man laughed heartily.

“You cheeky fellow, how many years apart are we in age, huh?”

On this day, Hyun-soo made a total of two friends.

One of them was the Sword King Barad, and the other was Spear Heaven Ben.

“The Black Knight… sir?”

Why add “sir” just because I did something significant?

In a tense atmosphere that suddenly turned calm, the demeanor of the woman put me off.

I haven’t shown my face to them, or rather, to the public.

Only once during a raid on a convoy from a carriage.

And once when attacking Pintel at the forge.

And… was there another time?

Anyway! The ‘Black Knight’, hidden behind a mask, unintentionally aims for mystique.

It’s exceedingly disconcerting to be recognized instantly as the ‘Black Knight’.

“Ah, that… right?”

The legend passed down orally, that story. That I can understand.

It’s the ‘real’ story of this world, not revealed in the game.

Even so, the reaction is unfamiliar since the ‘Black Knight’ I am playing is not the original protagonist.

‘Even more so, the identity of this Black Knight…?’

Do they know that he is the infamous ‘Laughing Executioner’ of the empire?

Well, perhaps it’s better they don’t know.

“Re, really… you, the Black Knight? Why are you here…?”

The woman, speaking with an embarrassed tone, I carefully examined her face.

She looked about the same age as Linne, with emerald green eyes and silver hair, which seemed out of place in a shabby shack.

‘I think her name was Meyer.’

The name ‘Meyer’ recently mentioned by a spirit came to mind.

“Is Solbern’s illegitimate child… here?”

Her full name is ‘Meyerd Solbern Eania.’

A member of the Adratan Empire’s great families, the Solbern family, unlike the Donassien family, holds the highest authority in a different kind of ‘magic’—spirit magic.

Seeing her handle the spirits, it’s clear the blood doesn’t lie.

Their family specialty is ‘spirit magic.’

While the Donassien use mana spread through nature to manipulate laws with their ‘magic,’ the Solberns use the ‘spirits’ that exist in nature to wield magic in its most natural form.

Known as ‘The Only One of Five Colors’ for her ability to control spirits of five elements, it’s ironic that she would end up in a slum, yet one day she will be a pillar of the Empire’s Magic Tower.

This matter is of no concern to me now.

“Ah….”

As Meyer looked at my face, she sighed briefly and then glanced at where Baran had fallen.

Afterward, a hint of hostility flickered in her emerald green eyes.

“Could it be, the Black Knight… no! Did you kill our brother?”

Though born into the noble class, Meyer’s speech was crude and sharp, as if she hadn’t received proper education.

“Hey, you! I’m asking you! Did you do it…?”

“No.” The informal tone slipped out of my mouth unexpectedly, and I sighed with relief, feeling somewhat awkward. It was something I was not accustomed to.

“When I arrived, he had already been attacked by someone else.”

“What a joke! There’s so much of your mana scattered around here, how can you deny it! Hunin told me everything!”

Hunin? Ah, she’s talking about a spirit. Given the scent of the wind, is she currently contracted only with the wind spirit?

As her name was mentioned, a shy glimmer of light hurriedly scurried into Meyer’s bosom.

“Hey, you bastard! Speak clearly! Or I’ll cut off your limbs and feed them to the demons…”

As Meyer raised her voice, I lifted the sheath of my Moon Blade to show her.

“Ask your precious wind spirit if my sword smells of blood.”

Meyer flinched at my confident demeanor. After a moment, she whispered softly to Hunin in her arms, and soon the spirit revealed itself as a burst of light.

– There’s no smell of blood on this man’s sword. I don’t think it’s him.

I heard it clearly, even though it was soft.

“What, what? Not him? You should have told me sooner!”

Meyer, taking out her frustration on her own spirit, hesitantly continued to speak to me.

“So, why are you here, Black Knight… sir?”

“I came here to tell you not to use my name. You’re part of the ‘Nameless Gang,’ right? You should have some idea.”

While ‘Meyer’ is a named character, it’s not clear if she’s actually a member of the ‘Nameless Gang’ in this situation. I’m well aware of the narrative and settings concerning the main characters around the Sword Saint, but I barely remember those of the lesser-known figures…

There are just too many! Thus, I probed Meyer with my words.

“Ugh!” She’s still young and can’t hide her feelings well. How did she become ‘The Only One of Five Colors’?

“But looking at the situation now, it seems too late even for a warning.”

Meyer turned her gaze to the dead Baran, and as tears began to form in her eyes, she panicked and started rubbing her eyes with her hands to hide her perceived weakness.

Soon, with reddened eyes, Meyer boldly said to me, “Help me.”

What are you talking about all of a sudden? Cutting right to the point and asking for help?

“Argh! Just help me! Help me catch the person who killed our brother Baran!”

“Why should I do that?”

Meyer’s assertive words crumbled at my counter-question.

“Uh…?”

“I asked you why.”

“Because… you’re the hero of the people! The noble martyr, the shadow of the weak…”

What? The hero of the people? A noble martyr? The shadow of the weak? I wish someone would uncurl my cringing hand.

“Cough, those are just nicknames you’ve pinned on me. I don’t wear this mask to help anyone. It’s purely for my own self-interest.”

To be more precise, about 10% of it was in lieu of the negligent Sword Saint, and 90% for my own safety. That’s pretty much it.

“Just like you. You’ve been using my name for your safety, as if you own it.”

“No, that’s a lie…”

Seeing Meyer unable to hide her disappointment, I wanted to get out of this complicated situation quickly, but I felt the need to say what had to be said. Since Baran, the leader, was dead, it seemed right to at least tell Meyer, who called him ‘brother’.

“However, there won’t be a second time. If you use my name again, then…”

As I was about to give my final warning, I suddenly sensed movements around the shack.

‘One, two, three…?’

Three presences. The way they moved silently and stealthily suggested they were trained assassins.

‘Part of the Nameless Gang?’

It’s more than likely. This place was the residence of their leader Baran after all. Perhaps they came hearing Meyer’s loud voice.

‘Hmm?’

But that thought proved wrong shortly. The intent to kill, silently creeping under the skin.

With my <Amazing Intuition>, it was too easy to sense the murderous intent emanating from these figures, who weren’t even Bishops.

And then……

‘These are the ones who killed Baran.’

“Fine! I’ll find the culprit myself…”

Crack!

As Meyer spoke, a fierce beam of light tore through the tent at the entrance and flew towards us. Having sensed the danger beforehand, I grabbed her hand and pulled her towards me.

It’s a good thing I was prepared.

“Oof….”

Thud!

With a bizarre scream and a stunned expression, Meyer looked at me. Then, seeing the dagger embedded next to her, her face turned pale.

“A dagger!? Where did it come from!?”

“You’re lucky. It seems that the people you were looking for have returned.”

“The ones I was looking for…?”

“It’s the same smell! The scent of Baran’s blood is coming from outside!”

It was the spirit inside Meyer’s bosom that injected certainty into my thoughts. As I watched the approaching figures and glanced at where the spirit was, the light bundle in her arms twitched slightly.

“Are you sure?”

Seeing the light bundle shake vigorously up and down, it seemed to affirmatively respond.

But can they see me? I have a deep understanding of ‘magic,’ allowing me to somewhat see their presence, but due to a lack of empathy, their forms are not clearly visible. Despite this, it seemed strange to Hunin that someone other than its master could see it, and it hid again inside Meyer’s bosom.

“I’ll say it once more. Help me.”

Meyer, having just witnessed a dagger fly past her, requested sharply, not just idly pleading while throwing around the nickname ‘Black Knight.’

“Baran wasn’t my blood relative, but he was someone I could call family. I really want to avenge him.”

Meyer’s tone was remarkably calm.

“Please, I’ll do anything… Huh?”

As Meyer spoke, I pulled out the dagger that had stuck into the wooden wall and examined its blade.

‘The Moon Blade is too conspicuous, I’ll have to use this for now.’

Requests aside, if I want to escape this place, I cannot avoid a confrontation with them.

Seeing my actions as a sign of assistance, she expressed her gratitude.

“Thank you, Black Knight. You really are just as the rumors say.”

Rumors are like clouds, intangible and ever-expanding.

What does she mean, I’m just as the rumors say? Don’t I also need to survive?

***

Using a dagger instead of my usual long sword felt awkward, like wearing unfamiliar clothes, but the sensation soon faded.

<Born Swordsman>

This ability, thought to be one of the most excellent among Julian’s many talents, was now proving its worth as recent training with various weapons shone through.

After pushing aside the tattered curtain, I stepped out of the shack and saw the figures who had thrown the daggers come into view.

‘It doesn’t seem like the Dawn Society…’

The energy and atmosphere they emitted were far from those of the Dawn Society. If it had been them, they wouldn’t have thrown daggers from a distance; they would have charged head-on, true to their style as a group that worships the demonic.

But why did they kill Baran? So far, he was just known as a back-alley boss of the slums.

“What, what is this!?”

As I tried to comprehend their motives for killing Baran and returning here, I noticed one of the men, clearly flustered.

“Is that guy the rumored Black Knight…?”

“I thought the Nameless Gang was just spouting nonsense, but was it true?”

‘I feel like I’ve seen him somewhere.’

His face seemed familiar, but not as a named character who plays a crucial role in “Let’s Kill the Demon King.”

‘Where have I seen that guy?’

After a bit of thought, it started to come back to me.

‘He’s one of Gerard’s men.’

Gerard, whom I encountered when Pintel was detained and then released by the gendarmes.

‘One of the private soldiers he had with him then. Oh! Could this also be a part of ‘Julian’s’ ability?’

My admiration for my memory was brief. Was Baran’s death orchestrated by Gerard? It’s unclear.

But I’ll find out soon enough.

**

The Black Knight.

Linne knew nothing about the man surrounded by such rumors, but her curiosity was piqued.

Stagnant sword skills.

Now that her mentor, the Sword Saint, had ascended to sainthood, she thought it best to seek guidance from someone superior to advance her skills.

-They say the Black Knight’s sword harbors moonlight!? I’d love to see that sword dance just one more time!

In this context, the figure known as ‘the Black Knight’ spoken of by Lupina caught Linne’s interest.

‘…Sigh.’

Ideally, she had a perfect opponent from whom to learn.

‘Julian… ugh.’

Despite swallowing her pride and attempting to seek guidance from Julian, whom she encountered at the ‘Dusk Flame,’ he had vanished like the wind.

‘Even if he tells me not to acknowledge him usually, he appears like a ghost.’

This only fueled a sense of defiance within her.

‘I wouldn’t seek him out to ask for lessons,’ she thought as she moved towards the dirty slums.

‘Rumor has it that the Black Knight often appears here.’

Thanks to the rumors of him humiliating a senseless noble and past legends, the Black Knight was quite popular.

In the slums, where the lower classes gathered, his recognition was high, and using this popularity as a shield, it was said that the Black Knight was hiding in the slums.

‘But, is this really okay?’

Although she had impulsively made her way to the slums, she knew what position the Black Knight held at the royal palace. Not a gendarme, nor part of the royal household, but an outlaw. Getting involved with him might prove to be a headache.

‘Will I be found out? I came here just to see what kind of person he is, and what kind of swordsmanship he uses.’

She didn’t worry unnecessarily about it. If there was something more annoying than that, it was…

‘…how filthy it is.’

It wasn’t her first time in the slums, but the dirty environment was enough to make her frown.

‘I absolutely despise this place, yet here I am again.’

When she had visited here with Julian, she had pretended it didn’t bother her, but inherently, she was not someone with a strong stomach.

The only reason she had acted tough back then was because she thought Julian would tease her about it.

‘Well, can’t help it.’

Thirsty people must look for a well. Knowing this well, she composed her expression and headed further inside.

And after a while…

‘Huh?’

Suddenly, her eyes caught sight of three men confronting a shack.

They seemed like well-trained knights, but oddly enough, there was a palpable tension between them.

‘What are they doing?’

She didn’t want to be interested in trivial matters, but the appearance of the man emerging from the shack made Linne instinctively hide herself.

‘As black as pitch, a mask, and a knightly aura.’

Just as Lupina had described.

‘That must be the Black Knight.’

However, contrary to Lupina’s description, the appearance of the ‘Black Knight’ was incredibly disappointing.

‘He looks hideous, doesn’t he?’

Act 70

Prev I TOC I Next

Phew, that was a close call.

Why does she have to measure everything this way and that when I said I would make it?

This is why overly clever people can’t succeed.

As I acted all cunning in front of Elenoa, I again felt a cold sweat trickling down the inside of my hand.

So, I deliberately rubbed my hands together and snapped off some leaves and branches.

‘It should be about time for contact; what could have gone wrong now?’

Around this time, Tenellon is supposed to step down from the Archbishop position and ascend to the position of Grand Archbishop in a scheduled event.

I counted on this and threw in my remarks to Elenoa, and luckily, she believed me.

If she had rejected my question about whether she wanted to be the Archbishop…

And what if the other bishops had seen and reported this?

It could become a very dangerous situation.

Especially since I previously stirred up the atmosphere of the Dawn Society by calling out ‘traitor.’

‘There is a need to take risks to attract the bishop.’

And damn that Gerard.

This guy’s ambition is huge enough to later take over the ‘Dawn Society.’

I know well enough that he won’t spare any means to get recognized by Tenellon during the process.

When I played the game in the early days, I died because of him.

‘I have to stop him before he becomes the Archbishop. That’s why I chose Elenoa.’

I mentioned her family for this reason.

In the original story, ‘Gerard, having made a smooth relationship with Julian, processes his political rivals to rise to the Archbishop’s position.

During this, many commoners and nobles die, and the capital falls into chaos.

The Black Knight appeared from time to time to block the Dawn Society and Julian, but it was too much for him alone, and it was incredibly frustrating.

Damn! How many times did I reset? 10 times? 20 times?

And Gerard’s ambition continues until he eventually calls upon the Demon Lord…

No way out.

Game over. Time to reset.

But that’s just in the game, and now that I’ve become ‘Julian,’ a reset isn’t possible.

So, drastic measures are necessary.

***

It won’t be long before ‘Tenellon’ himself announces the ‘Grand Archbishop’ matter.

“Sir Julian, the Archbishop has named himself the ‘Grand Archbishop’ and will soon hold the succession ceremony.”

While I was tending orchids in the mansion office, a member of the Dawn Society came in secretly to report.

Normally, I would have received reports from Razlot, but today the society member came in person.

“I see.”

I nodded in agreement, and the society member looked slightly perplexed.

“Why do you not ask for the reason?”

I stopped pruning the orchids and turned my gaze back to the society member, who flinched.

I know well enough why Tenellon is holding the ‘succession ceremony.’

I’ve played ‘Let’s Kill the Demon Lord’ several times.

“Is there any reason I need to ask?”

“I’m sorry, Sir Julian!”

The society member hastily bowed his head, starting to apologize as a shade of ‘fear’ flickered above him.

I didn’t mean it that seriously.

“Please… just spare my life…!”

Why mention life?

What have I done?

After calming down the panicked fellow, I turned my attention to the box handed to me by Elenoa.

Inside, there was a magical device that transmits sound in both directions, along with a small ‘soul stone.’

‘The Demicel family’s soul stone.’

If you consider that the Demicel family originally founded the ‘Dawn Society,’ it’s not strange that they have a soul stone.

Of course, I know this fact because of my memories of playing the game.

‘Normally, I would have looked for a place to hide this soul stone…’

But this time, there’s no need.

This ‘soul stone’ will serve as the fare to send Gerard to the underworld.

His unpredictable actions are dangerous.

‘Not just what happened at the banquet, but also his attempt to cut off Pintel’s air.’

His overflowing ambition is the root cause.

An ambitious ‘bishop’ is trouble.

The ‘Dawn Society’ must remain below the surface for the Sword Saint to operate effectively.

And for my sake, it must not become too exposed.

I must play the role of the ‘Black Knight’ until my negligent master fully regains his position.

Damn!

‘It’s wise to nip the sprout of anxiety before it grows.’

In that sense, I headed to the outskirts of the slums, where one could call the ‘Nameless Gang’ a ‘sprout of anxiety.’

Before dealing with the ‘head’ that is Gerard, his ‘limbs’ must be broken first.

Before starting with the ‘soul stone’ in hand.

Wouldn’t it be wise to have a leash on the ‘Nameless Gang’ to prevent them from causing trouble?

The Black Knight is with us!

The Black Knight is our hope!

Spreading such nonsense could interfere with my plans.

***

Recently, the familiarity of the slums, combined with my experience playing the game, felt like my own room.

I headed toward the outskirts of the area managed by the ‘Nameless Gang.’

Then, a shack fitting the description of the slums, unclean and unsightly, came into view.

Julian’s body, which has a compulsion for ‘cleanliness,’ instinctively resisted going towards the shack.

‘Unfortunately, that’s my destination today.’

The shack where ‘Baran,’ the leader of the Nameless Gang, resides, the message I have to deliver is simple.

Avoid mentioning the ‘Black Knight,’ and tell him not to do anything until the Dawn Society’s succession ceremony is over.

That would allow the ‘Black Knight’ a bit more freedom to move.

Of course, he’s not likely to listen to me.

If he were that easy, I wouldn’t have come here myself.

‘A small warning should suffice.’

If they impersonate the ‘Black Knight,’ the ‘Royal Family’ might track them down.

A single word should be enough for those whose goal is survival.

‘If that doesn’t work…’

I glanced at the moon blade on my hip and lightly flicked the scabbard with my hand.

Clang!

I might have to be a bit more forceful.

‘I just wish they’d stay quiet until I deal with Gerard…’

Then, amid the fetid stench of the slums, an unpleasant odor stung my nostrils.

If it were simply a ‘bad smell,’ I wouldn’t be so bothered, but Julian’s body found this scent particularly familiar.

‘It smells like blood.’

The thought that something dangerous might have occurred crossed my mind. As I opened the dirty door, the sound of dragging along the floor allowed me to enter the shack.

And when I moved the curtain aside with my hand, there was a man who appeared to be Baran, the leader of the Nameless Gang, lying dead.

The pungent smell of blood tingled my brain, sparking a clarity in my thoughts.

Seeing the corpse, I expected to stiffen, but instead, my body began to fill with energy, sensing potential danger. I drew my sword and looked around.

Mana detection.

I scattered mana to check if anyone was around, but sensed no presence.

‘Who could have done this?’

Another gang dividing the slums?

No, that’s unlikely; they’re valueless and the remaining two would prefer to avoid conflict.

‘Is this actually good?’

The leader of the ‘Nameless Gang’ who had been impersonating the ‘Black Knight’ is dead. But then, I realized that wasn’t it.

‘It’s actually more troublesome now that a man who could have talked is dead.’

It might be abnormal to think this way in front of a corpse, but it was the first thought that came to mind.

Who could have done this?

Sensing that things were about to get more complicated, my head began to ache.

‘The desk is a mess.’

Next to where the body had fallen, there was a desk with papers strewn about.

Considering the dirty atmosphere of the shack, it wasn’t surprising, yet my gaze clung stickily to the body of the dead Baran.

‘Someone came here looking for something.’

The contents of the documents that caught my eye seemed unimportant, but that absence drew my attention.

‘There’s nothing here bearing the seal of the Oclean family.’

Baran, the head of the ‘Nameless Gang,’ was originally a member of the private soldiers raised by ‘Gerard Oclean.’

The reason for his presence here was as a preliminary step to absorb the infrastructure of the ‘Six Fingers’ and the ‘Blood Fiend Clan’ in the future.

It’s strange that there is nothing with the ‘Oclean family’ seal on this guy’s desk.

‘He couldn’t have hidden it just before dying.’

Is it stored somewhere else?

With that thought, I began to look around for any possible hiding places.

‘Hold on.’

In the middle of this, the thought struck me that if someone caught me in this situation, it would lead to a headache.

‘The cold body of the Nameless Gang’ leader.’

And there I was, ‘Laughing Executioner’ Julian Crypart Frason, rummaging through the place.

If someone who didn’t know the circumstances saw this, it would be easy to misunderstand.

‘Surely now, at this incredible timing, someone would come in…’

Bang!

“Brother Baran! It’s an emergency, an emergency! There’s been a report of seeing Julian in our area, did you do something?”

A sharp woman’s voice came from the entrance, and I quickly hid myself in a corner.

“Crazy…!”

From my hidden angle, the woman who entered hadn’t spotted me yet.

“Huh? Brother Baran?”

The problem was, the only way out of the room I was hiding in was the entrance, and there were no windows. To escape, I would have to face the woman.

“Brother Baran!!!”

Her voice, almost a shriek, filled the shack. Apparently, she had just seen Baran’s dead body.

“What should I do? What the heck is going on… I need to tell the others…”

Her anxious tone seemed like she was about to leave, which inwardly relieved me.

– Meyer, I felt a recent use of mana from inside the shack…!

But my relief was short-lived as another voice whispered, reaching my ears. The faint scent of mana, and Julian’s ‘intuition,’ sensitive to all things magical, whispered that this voice was that of a ‘spirit.’

“A spirit user?!”

In this world, filled with magic, mana, and vampires, of course, there exist ‘spirits’—supernatural entities.

One of the many traits of spirits is their ghost-like ability to detect ‘mana,’ their very essence.

But how did it know?

It didn’t seem like a high-ranking spirit capable of detecting the mana inside me.

…Was it because of my mana detection?

The ‘Mana Detection’ I used to check for enemies around after finding Baran’s body. Its residue must have been detected by the spirit.

“Who’s there!? Come out now!”

Sensing something was off, the woman spoke out aggressively.

“Damn, what should I do?”

Should I go out and explain that I had nothing to do with Baran’s death?

Would that even be believable?

Thinking about it, the character ‘Julian’ being at this scene is inherently plausible.

To an outsider, it might look like ‘Baran’ messed up with the royal family, and ‘Julian’ purged him.

But from her perspective, even if my alibi and reasons are perfect, she would have no choice but to see me as the ‘villain with narrow eyes.’

‘It seems like the situation is only going to get worse.’

What should I do?

“Hurry up and show yourself!”

While I was lost in thought, the woman’s voice, now more agitated, rang out again. Listening to her, I realized there was no option but to overpower her.

‘Ah, I had that option…’

A drastic measure flashed through my mind. To implement it, I used ‘Sombra’ to create and don a mask like I had done before.

“Come out before I turn this shack and everything in it to ashes!”

As I revealed myself, the woman’s voice faltered.

“Uh… oh!?”

Soon, her previously uncontrolled voice began to regain composure. The hostility in her eyes and the flickering ‘anger’ above her head gradually faded.

“… Black Knight?”
