Strike 121

Prev I TOC I Next

As always.

An incomplete spear shaft.

With a massive roar, walls crumble and flames surge in.

[HP falls below 97%.]

[HP falls below 93%.]

Amidst the endlessly pressing flames, Hyun-soo shields the spear shaft with his body against the fire.

Now, Hyun-soo is protecting the spear to be completed, even more than his own body.

When the flames attempt to engulf the spear shaft as well.

By planting the Aegis behind him, he withstands the flames.

[The rage of the Minor World Tree cannot be easily quelled!]

[If it is not put to rest, everyone will die.]

The flames of the Minor World Tree were hot and fierce.

Anyone in this situation would think of fleeing, not crafting. Thinking of ways to escape, to survive.

But knowing there was no other way, Hyun-soo does not stop.

His hands move as if possessed, polishing the carved spear shaft.

Finally, connecting the spear shaft and the spearhead.

Click-

Yes, the reason this spear could be completed.

[Even if it breaks.]

[You have found a breakthrough in a critical moment of crisis.]

[The effect of the completed artifact is increased by 5%.]

It was thanks to his unyielding will to complete it.

[The fourth legend is written.]

A wild power can be felt from the spear.

Holding the spear with a faint blue hue, he moves beyond the broken walls.

At that moment, the effect of the spear spreads.

Whoosh-

The melody of waves gently breaking against the earth.

[In 30 seconds, the Minor World Tree will cause an explosion 10 times more powerful than the first one.]

Hyun-soo steps forward, seen by Pan, nobles, and all the knights.

Their faces filled with fear.

And Pan thought the spear in his hand was unusual.

Most spears have a single spearhead.

But, this spear had three spearheads.

He first reads the character for “Hyun” (現) written on the middle of the three spearheads.

Then, his gaze is captured by the spear shaft.

On the spear shaft, it was written:

‘Trident…?’

He does not understand.

He only feels.

[The Minor World Tree senses danger.]

[It unleashes a torrent of flames towards the one who manifests danger.]

With a roaring blaze, flames swirl and explode towards Hyun-soo.

He will be burnt to ash.

Leaving only bone dust.

At that moment, Hyun-soo forcefully drives the spear down in front of him.

The calm melody of the waves turns.

[Violent Waves]

From behind, a massive wave extends, blocking the flames erupting from the Minor World Tree.

Rumble-

Fire and Water.

The two elements clash in a struggle of power, and the winner is Water.

A tidal wave swallows the spewed flames.

Riding atop that giant wave, Hyun-soo advances.

[The fourth legend began with inspiration from a god.]

Angered by the failure of its attack, the Minor World Tree spouts flames in all directions.

Whoosh-

At that moment, Hyun-soo swings his spear.

[That god is the ruler of the seas, a being that resides in his world.]

[Known as one of the three supreme gods, the god who rules the seas.]

At that moment,

Whoosh-

This time, massive waves pour out from all directions.

The raging waves start to fill the garden like a sewer during a downpour.

And Hyun-soo’s eyes narrow like a hawk’s as he rides the waves.

[It is the god of the sea, Poseidon.]

Hyun-soo had been feeling it.

‘You don’t want this either, do you?’

The Minor World Tree does not desire their deaths.

It was the Minor World Tree that gave the sudden quest.

Yet, it rampages oddly.

It’s like the law of nature.

The Minor World Tree had to blaze up when provoked and explode in anger when attacked.

Whether it wanted to or not.

Swoosh-

The Minor World Tree, with its dry branches trembling.

As Hyun-soo moves forward, looking at it, he soon feels a power focusing on him.

[In 5 seconds, a massive explosion will occur.]

Hyun-soo intuits.

The moment that explosion occurs, everyone here will die.

Hyun-soo, riding and raging on the waves, is continuously struck by strong balls of fire.

Boom

Bang

Bam-Bam-Bam-Bam-Bam-!

Even amidst that countless damage and harm, Hyun-soo does not stop.

And around his spear, five waves are formed.

Five waves crashing into each other above the sky imbue into Hyun-soo’s spear.

Swoosh-

[In 4 seconds, a massive explosion will occur.]

Beep-

Like a kettle reddened from heat, the Minor World Tree turns red.

[In 3 seconds……]

Before that, Hyun-soo, having arrived in front of it, forcefully plunges his spear in front of the Minor World Tree.

At that moment.

The five waves that had been imbued in Hyun-soo’s spear.

[In 2 seconds……]

Those waves simultaneously engulf the Minor World Tree from five directions.

Rumble-

[In 1 second……]

And finally.

[The rage of the Minor World Tree is calmed.]

Hyun-soo felt relieved.

And in that relief, he knew what he had to do next.

Swoosh-

The flames that were erupting from the Minor World Tree were sucked back into it.

Conversely, the raging waves soon calmed down.

The moment Hyun-soo pulled out the spear he was holding and struck down once more, water began to rise as if filling a fish tank.

As the water started to rise, he felt the World Tree’s power trying to absorb.

Finally, a permanent sea was formed around the Minor World Tree.

Swoosh-

The melody of the waves unfolds again.

And Hyun-soo felt it.

It seemed like the branches of the Minor World Tree were shaking invisibly.

As if saying thank you, but Hyun-soo felt something entirely different.

It wasn’t because he saved it from drying out but for another reason it was thankful.

And finally, the garden began to change.

[The Minor World Tree is revived.]

The scene was literally of the sea covering up to the center of the Minor World Tree.

Naturally, the nobles, knights, and Pan were floating on the water. But quickly, the water began to recede.

As the water receded, soil formed around the Minor World Tree.

As the soil rose, thousands of shoots stretched out at an exponential rate.

In just 10 seconds, those shoots sprouted seeds, took shape, and began to grow, creating a complete forest.

[The Minor World Tree regains its complete form.]

The Minor World Tree, having regained its complete form, made everyone stand in the garden as the water receded.

Pan looked around.

Half of the garden was a sea.

The other half seemed to form an island around the Minor World Tree.

What surprised Hyun-soo the most was this.

[The Minor World Tree bears the most special fruit in the world.]

[You can check the representative fruit.]

Pan was captivated by the brilliance.

One of the countless fruits hanging on the vast Minor World Tree.

It had the shape of rice.

The moment he saw it, which had only about ten grains of rice, Pan collapsed.

[A fruit with ten grains of rice.]

[If you sow these grains in the ground, abundant crops will grow in even the most barren land.]

Pan had denied it.

The legendary fruit Ben had talked about.

Then, Hyun-soo, looking at him, said,

“This is the kind of person I’ve seen Ben to be.”

Pan meets his gaze.

Hyun-soo, smiling slightly, says something contrary to what they had thought of Ben.

“For the people alone.”

A grumpy and harsh personality.

“For the people’s.”

Suspected of dementia.

“A king for the people.”

An old man caught in memories and delusions.

“That was King Ben.”

“……”

All the nobles and knights there were left speechless.

They had thought him a king caught in memories and delusions.

But now, this grain would alleviate the hunger of the people.

“Heh-heh-heh-heh-heh.”

Many of the nobles and knights at the scene weep sadly.

For defying the king’s wish and trying to destroy the Minor World Tree.

For thinking he had succumbed to dementia.

They thought they would gladly accept any punishment for their sins.

And then Ben entered the scene.

No explanation was needed.

Ben, having heard the story from outside, looked at his unworthy subjects with a gaze.

“Damn fools.”

But that was the end.

There was no talk of killing them, beheading them, or exterminating their families. Of course, they would have to accept their punishment, but they were also objects of Ben’s love-hate relationship.

And Hyun-soo felt a flutter in his chest.

A bright light formed at the Minor World Tree.

[Sudden Quest: The Anger of the Minor World Tree Completed]

[You have calmed the anger and revived the Minor World Tree.]

[Completed with astonishing results.]

From the bright light, materials resembling logs descended in front of Hyun-soo.

[You have obtained the highest quality Minor World Tree.]

[This is the most precious material obtainable from the Minor World Tree, making up 1% of its yield.]

Originally, it was supposed to yield a medium-quality Minor World Tree.

But it changed to the highest quality.

Ben muttered beside him, “I can’t understand, the Minor World Tree is ultimately a tree. If you chop it, you get materials, and over time, it recovers, and the cycle repeats.”

It was the first time Ben had seen such a thing.

“But now, the Minor World Tree has offered its materials by itself.”

Hyun-soo knew the truth.

Just before, it seemed as if the Minor World Tree was saying thank you.

Not just for preventing it from withering.

“The Minor World Tree seems to care for you, Your Majesty.”

“……”

Ben was at a loss for words.

Of course, it might have been just an abstract statement.

Swoosh-

The vast leaves fluttering in the wind seemed to answer for him.

Suddenly, he reflected on himself from the age of 17 to now.

Since bringing the Minor World Tree, he had never once left it.

Sometimes he slept beside it, watered it,

And sometimes confided worries he couldn’t share with his subjects.

Yes.

The old man and the tree cared for each other.

And Hyun-soo thought…

‘Maybe I’m the tragic male protagonist?’

You know, like those protagonists who faint at every little thing.

[You are experiencing accumulated fatigue.]

Come to think of it, Hyun-soo hadn’t slept at all while crafting the spear for three days.

Also, the endless tension from the fight to protect the Minor World Tree had caused him mental fatigue.

Hyun-soo’s vision began to spin.

“……I think I need to sleep.”

[You fall into a state of abnormal fainting.]

Ben watches as Hyun-soo collapses.

Pan, who had approached at some point, watches.

The nobles who walked over and the knights who support him look at his sleeping face.

All of them are looking at him with a completely different expression than before.

And as Hyun-soo is sucked into the depths, he recalls a notification he had forgotten about in his focus.

‘What was that…?’

The notification had come after he created the fourth legendary artifact.

[You are approaching a special name.]

Finally, he falls completely asleep.

***

Special User Management Team.

Kim Tae-seok and Lee Ji-hee, employees.

The two looked at the fainted Hyun-soo with surprised expressions.

This notification was before them:

[User Hyun-soo is approaching a special name.]

[When creating a total of six legends, you will qualify to hold that name.]

The special name.

It was a name too sublime and beautiful.

It was not something given by choice, but only obtained through one’s own strength.

Tae-seok smirked.

Globally, only 11 people have received this notification.

Of those 11 users, only 3 have actually managed to claim the name.

In the Korean server, the Asgan server, there exist ten legendary figures.

These ten legends have long represented their continent.

Sword King Barad.

Spear Heaven Ben.

Archmage Luwon.

Absolute Shield Peya.

Divine Archer Vaneka…

And so on.

Countless names. There were also vacancies among them.

“This is unprecedented.”

Kim Tae-seok muttered with an incredulous expression.

“For the first time globally, a non-combat profession is approaching the ten legends.”

The ten legends are different from legendary classes.

It refers to those who currently possess the ultimate power.

Even users with legendary classes couldn’t reach the toes of the ten legends.

Suddenly, Lee Ji-hee had a curiosity.

“What will Hyun’s name be?”

Tae-seok’s thoughts did not last long.

“Ten Legends. Master Artisan Hyun (現).”

That would be the name engraved on him in the future.

In the red-light district where mayflies, prostitutes, and drug addicts live, in the slums stained with pickpockets, beggars, and gangsters, in the black market where rights disputes stained with blood occur time and again, in the arena where fighters engage in desperate battles day after day…

The Sword Demon had personally experienced all the darkness of the underworld. Fortunately, having just enough talent to survive on “knife’s bread,” he was able to keep his life. But in the underworld, life was as cheap as the flies on a corpse.

‘The world is rotten.’

His own life’s journey contributed to such thoughts. Where else could the blood on his knife have come from? Even in those harsh and vile places, countless fierce battles took place.

However, there was a decisive reason. Just one step out of the underworld. No. Even within the underworld, there were often seen those who…

“It’s boring. Watching the fights of the weak is supposed to be intense. Make it more exciting. Isn’t the battle too bland?”

Those who look down on them from high above, treating them like bugs. There, from birth, were the nobles, referred to as blue-bloods.

From the moment he opened his eyes and became aware of the world, it was a rule too obvious. But at some point, the Sword Demon felt a strange discomfort.

-Why do only we have to roll in the mud?

-Even though we look the same and speak the same language, why are we treated like bugs?

‘Unlucky.’

Some are born into a life as wretched as a cesspit. Why them!

The so-called blue-blooded nobles. Even they bleed red when pricked. How so?

‘It would be better if everything was turned upside down. This world, it would be better if it were destroyed.’

Unresolved questions soon gave birth to a twisted desire mixed with inferiority and violence.

“Believe in the calamity! Our savior who will drive the Manhett Empire to destruction!”

The proposal of the madmen who suddenly appeared to the Sword Demon, who harbored such desires, was too sweet a fruit.

Thus, decades after joining that organization, the Sword Demon mingled with them, becoming a member of the same flock. A fanatic enough to flinch at the word ‘calamity’ spoken by the other party. That was where the Sword Demon stood now.

“The Calamity of Many Faces? Pfft, never heard of such a name. Stop spouting nonsense and get lost.”

But that was only for a moment.

-Kwang!

With rising anger, the Sword Demon leapt over the fist of a golem flying at him. The distorted-faced demon growled at the unseen opponent.

How could one be a fanatic without properly knowing the god they serve? Though he was an uneducated brute who had only been fed on the sword, he too had picked up some common knowledge after becoming one of Kerzo’s top officers.

The calamity of famine from the east.

The calamity of death from the west.

The calamity of nature from the south.

The calamity of dominion from the north.

The Calamity of Many Faces was a name unheard of in records or the prophecies of fortune-tellers.

It was only natural not to believe.

But then,

“Tch. With such widespread distrust, how can anyone profess to believe in the calamity? Forget it. It was just a momentary interest on my part.”

The voice that clicked its tongue in disappointment sounded vividly in his ears.

“Still, I can’t just ignore it completely. I’ll add some seasoning, and you can do the cooking.”

Seasoning? Cooking?

Wondering what absurdity this was, about to furiously hurl insults at the source of the voice, when suddenly,

-Beep. The hostile entity’s strange magic-using gloves are breaking down!

The Sword Demon’s eyes widened.

‘Those are… Ah, is that what the ‘Puppeteer’ was talking about as the core?’

The completely collapsed golems. The magic circles drawn on their chests.

Instinctively, the Sword Demon realized that these were the vital points of the monsters swarming towards him.

-Swish.

In the gap created by the unidentified being, his sword easily sliced through the golems’ chests.

-Operational stop…

-Emergency support request…

Sliding his sword back into its sheath,

Blink. Blink…

With the magic circles flickering out, the last golem’s movements ceased entirely.

If one claims to be a calamity,

No, if one boasts about impersonating a calamity, is this level of ability a given?

For the Sword Demon, who knew nothing of magic, it was an unfathomable realm.

“Ha-ha! To sweep these foes away with a single stroke of the sword! Indeed, you are worthy to be called my follower! Ah, yes. Since you’ve alleviated my boredom, I’ll give you a gift.”

The tone sounded almost benevolent, reminiscent of the nobles he had encountered before, sparking a surge of irritation just as he was about to unleash his fury.

Thump, Thoom, Thump!

From afar, the sound of new golems rushing in could be felt.

“Damn! Reinforcements already?”

Just as he was about to make his escape,

“Go straight, turn right at the second intersection. If you go two blocks further, you’ll see a house with red bricks and an ash-gray roof on the left. Enter there and press the back wall behind the counter. You’ll find a passage leading out of the academy.”

Before he could vent his anger, the unidentified voice spilled out its instructions without pause, not giving him a moment to respond.

“Sigh, it’s only natural to be suspicious. Do as you wish. Believe it or not.”

-Just so long as I’m entertained.

The Sword Demon didn’t miss the faintly whispered voice.

Clearly a being of considerable power, but leading him towards his own demise?

[Strong resistance from the intruder. Execute immediately! Repeat. Execute immediately!]

However, the inorganic mechanical voice echoing from behind made the Sword Demon conclude his deliberations.

‘Overthinking isn’t my forte. That’s better suited for the young ones.’

Leaving the scheming to other officers like the fortune-teller or the beastmaster.

Whether to die by falling into a trap or to be crushed under the sheer volume of golems.

The outcome, death, was the same either way.

So, the choice was obvious.

‘I’ll gladly be deceived, you who dare impersonate a calamity…

After all, it’s just a spare body.

Simple death wasn’t a significant obstacle for him.

If it was a trap meant to lead him to his demise, then it was also an opportunity to inform his colleagues about the audacious one who boasts of calamity.

And then,

“Red bricks with an ash-gray roof…! To think it was real.”

Indeed.

As per the voice’s instructions, there indeed stood a building with those exact features.

‘Let’s see, whether it’s a trap or not can only be known by experiencing it firsthand.’

“Hup!”

-Bang!

Though the door was locked, it was hardly a high-security vault door; unable to withstand the Sword Demon’s kick, it was too frail.

With a shout, he kicked the door off its hinges, and sure enough,

The protruding bricks behind the counter caught his eye.

“…Huh.”

One last time, as if to be fooled,

The Sword Demon pressed each brick without missing any.

-Abnormal body temperature detected.

-Immediately eliminate upon target discovery.

As the golems drew nearer, he pressed a brick without realizing, feeling anxious.

-Koogooong.

With a loud noise, the space that appeared to be just a wall collapsed.

A sinister passage, its end shrouded in darkness, not visible.

“What are you hesitating for? Get in. Do you really want to be killed by those scraps of metal here?”

A chilling voice seemed to push him from behind, ringing in my ears.

‘Right, I’ve already climbed onto the back of a running calamity.’

Half in resignation.

And half with a faith in an unknown disaster he was unaware of, he stepped into the jaws of that darkness.

-….

As soon as he set foot inside, the entrance that had been spinning with a loud noise just moments before vanished without a trace.

“…Always making the wrong choice. Familiar with the plight of a rat trapped in poison, but not pleasant.”

Just as he was about to sit down, resigned to the trap he suspected,

[Beep. The trace of the perpetrator ends here]

[Enhance search around commercial area 4]

[Guerrilla tactics suspected. Immediately canvass the surrounding houses]

A loud siren and the heavy operation sound of machinery could be heard beyond the closed walls.

‘Could it be…I wasn’t detected?’

The sound growing fainter gave me confidence in his speculation.

“How about it? You did well to listen to me, right?”

“……”

“Though a spare body, it’s not without a price, right? The first was your left eye, living as a blind person isn’t too hard, is it?”

“H-how did you…!”

Seeing his expression filled with horror, he let out a frivolous laugh.

“Keke. You’d be more surprised if you didn’t know the ability of a deity, wouldn’t you?”

The solemnity from before vanished.

A voice snickering like a clown.

But rather because of that.

The space in his heart filled with doubt.

Wouldn’t it be stranger if the disaster that intends to destroy the world was fine?

The moment he heard about his own ability and penalty, known only to a few within the organization.

The twisted faith that had been obscured by doubt opened its eyes.

“Then I’ll go. Take care of yourself.”

The sound, like the siren before, gradually faded away.

He didn’t hesitate for long.

-Flop.

The swordsman knelt down, bowing deeply towards the invisible voice.

Awe for the deity and gratitude for being saved.

“Oh, O Disaster!”

And, the sense of superiority covering it all!

Who in Kerzo would enjoy the glory of conversing directly with the disaster!

‘Even that fortune teller must not have had such an experience.’

But because of a moment of doubt, his deity seemed to be leaving him now.

“Please look after me more! It was my ignorance, not knowing of your existence! As long as I have been here, my loyalty is second to none!”

The swordsman’s voice was desperate.

He couldn’t let decades of waiting be ruined by his own foolishness!

He had no choice but to rely on his generosity, prostrating himself.

A second felt unbearably long.

Just waiting endlessly to speak again at that moment.

-Didn’t I tell you to stop spouting nonsense and get lost?

The voice was so filled with noise that even the gender was indistinguishable.

How welcome that playful voice was.

“Please forgive my rudeness! This humble servant will gladly accept any punishment!”

Although he had been part of the Disaster Sect, Kerzo, for a long time, he had only seen the empire and the nobility’s continuous success without any significant change.

But at this moment.

‘Finally! The Disaster itself has graced us! The day the world turns upside down isn’t far away!’

The fruit of his faith manifested right before his eyes.

How could there be any doubt left!

He had already proven everything as a deity!

Joyful madness melted into his wrinkles.

***

‘Good. Puhaha.’

Trying not to burst into laughter while looking down at the back of the prostrated swordsman’s head, it was only amusing to me, who had become their deity by accident, thanks to the power of invisibility magic.

‘After all, I had fooled Báthory by pretending to be a demon before. It wouldn’t be impossible to impersonate the final boss if I scaled things up a bit.’

As if applauding my dedicated acting, the message window in the status screen also blinked regularly.

[Quest Completed!]

[Identify the identity of the heretical force ‘Kerzo’ -> Deceive ‘Kerzo’s officer, the swordsman]

[You have exceeded the target.]

[Rewards will be settled.]

Truly an unexpected windfall that came rolling in.

I immediately scrolled down the message on the status screen.

[Activation of a new faction within the ‘Kerzo’ Disaster Sect]

[Mobilization of forces possible in specific situations]

My gaze went to the robe of the swordsman kneeling at my feet.

“Does this mean I can summon the swordsman and his forces if necessary?”

If done right, isn’t it possible to incite a fight between the disaster and the Disaster Sect to aim for mutual destruction?

“Take this.”

Taking advantage of the fact that he was not looking up while prostrated, I quickly took out a communication crystal from my bosom and dropped it into his hand.

“What, what is this?”

“It’s a tool to connect with those who can contain me. Wait for contact.”

“Oh! A spokesperson for the manifold disaster! This will be a good meeting for me too. I will treasure it!”

“Yes. I too had fun for the first time in a while.”

Of course. Not only did I get someone to take the blame as the thief of the holy sword replica, but also a fool who would give away the information about their base and organization.

And even secured a volunteer for a meat shield.

How could it not have been a fun time?

Even a generously giving tree would surely shed tears if it saw the swordsman.

“Then, let’s part here. We’ll see each other again when the time comes.”

“Yes! I will spread the name of the Calamity of Many Faces to everyone in Kerzo!”

Leaving the swordsman, who was spouting all sorts of flattery, I hurriedly escaped through the passage.

‘This place is no longer usable.’

The academy has been rummaged through by outsiders once.

Such a sloppy secret passage for saving on distribution costs would be easily caught once an investigation begins.

“Ah, how do I apologize to the saintess?”

Originally, this place was frequently used for outings to the city outside the academy under the guise of dates with the male leads.

-Your Highness, welcome, quickly!

-Wait, you’re going outside? Without even taking a servant or maid?

-Volunteer work? Eh, the elders and children at the orphanage won’t welcome it, you know. By the way, keeping your identity a secret there, promise me!

The protagonist secretly going out for volunteer work.

And the male lead following her with the purpose of a date.

Certainly, it would play a big part in their academy life.

“Eh, forget it. It’s not the only rat hole here, and let the protagonist figure it out! Let’s take pride in having preemptively hindered Luciana and the prince’s relationship.”

After all. While that side is playing a love game, this side is too busy to care about such minor things.

I still need to deliver the holy sword replica to Oparn.

Prepare for Luciana’s first lesson tomorrow, and receive information for cross-verification from Wolbaek…

I interlocked my fingers and stretched my arms above my head to relieve the fatigue in my muscles.

“First, I need to dispel this invisibility magic… Aha.”

The invisibility magic was still well maintained.

A very good way to utilize this came to mind.

Surely, the fantasy that starts with ‘If I became invisible’, is something everyone has thought about at least once.

Imagining the delightful scenes I was about to encounter, saliva sweetly moistened my mouth.

“Your steps seem heavy. Isn’t it only polite for a fiancé to visit their partner’s room?”

I crossed my legs and smiled at the pink-haired lady sitting across from me.

“Wish grant.”

“Ugh.”

With just a word, the hierarchy was clearly set, and then I poured her some tea.

“Put it away. Do you think I came here to drink tea? State your business.”

“Don’t be like that. Let’s discuss our future plans while we enjoy the tea that even Luciana praised.”

“You’re the one who’s brewing the tea? Unless she’s being sarcastic, I can’t see Luciana actually saying that.”

After all, the tea wasn’t brewed by me.

Elizabeth looked at me with weary eyes as I nonchalantly shrugged.

“Aren’t you planning to improve your own skills? This is disqualifying for a servant.”

“What are you talking about? Managing maids is also a duty of a servant.”

Elizabeth nodded her head slightly, urging me to quickly state my business.

“You know I can ask my wish for you to stay away from Luciana.”

“Pfft-“

Elizabeth, who had just taken a sip of tea, spit it out and yelled.

“Never! Think about why I’m cooperating with you, a demon in the first place!”

“Ah, of course. Even if I am the so-called ‘evil demon’ you speak of, I don’t interfere with one’s deepest desires. Certainly not.”

As I smirked behind my teacup, twisting the corners of my mouth, Elizabeth finally realized she was being teased and her body shuddered.

“I wouldn’t make such a cruel request. I just need help.”

“Sigh, just hurry up and say it. I’ve also made time to come here.”

She glanced at me and looked down, seemingly more relieved that her relationship with Luciana was still intact than angry about the prank.

‘Well, I heard she’s been quite busy.’

While most freshmen are excited and anxious about the academy, Elizabeth is busier because she entered the succession competition late.

-The reason for her busyness, isn’t it because of the mess you’ve made?

“Is it true that assault is bad?”

-What? Such insolence from a vassal! To dare…

Ignoring Bathory, who started to rant, I turned back to Elizabeth, who was lifting her teacup to her mouth again, and told her my real wish.

“I will steal the academy’s model of the holy sword. Please cooperate.”

The basics of negotiation.

First, make an unreasonable demand, then present the real condition you want, breaking down the mental barriers.

“Pfft~!”

Unfortunately, this too was a far-fetched request. Elizabeth spit out her tea for the second time.

-Poor thing. To be entangled with you.

Bathory, seemingly sympathetic to the sight, clicked her tongue.

“Oh dear, Bathory. It seems the tea didn’t suit your disciple’s taste. Please take it away.”

“…Understood.”

As Bathory suddenly popped out of the shadows and clattered away the cups and plates on the table.

-Bang!

Elizabeth’s hand slammed down hard on the table.

“Are you insane? Theft at the academy?!”

“What’s so surprising about that? The coral branch staff that Lady Elizabeth carries around was also stolen, wasn’t it?”

“That was different from the auction!”

Elizabeth slyly hid her staff behind her back.

That didn’t mean her fierce momentum had died down.

Her glaring eyes were fixed on me.

“Why the model? The real Holy Sword is in Saleranto, it’s useless.”

“Would you believe me if I said it was merely for my collection?”

“Sure, I’ll believe that. What’s your real scheme this time?”

The replica of the Holy Sword.

A relic that can be obtained without going through the church or the black market, essential for strengthening my weapon.

I responded with a smile, without giving her an answer.

There was no need to explain my situation to her since she was bound by the wish grant anyway.

“…Tch. So, what do you want me to do?”

Elizabeth is a merchant and among her peers, she’s known for her exceptional grasp of the political landscape.

She understood my intentions all too well.

“Great question! I have a separate request for you, Elizabeth, in addition to causing a distraction.”

***

Mana and Aura.

Two mighty forces that transcend reality.

The mere clash between those who wield these powers can wreak havoc on the surroundings, especially in an academy filled with inexperienced students.

Naturally, due to the hot blood of these young ones, the academy has faced many troubles.

Moreover, the clear class distinctions and disdain among the students.

The only reason the order hasn’t collapsed under such violence is solely due to the dean’s ability.

[Patrol System Activation]

Order is established by a force more overwhelming than any strength.

The existence of golems, capable of immediately suppressing any sudden actions by the students, has been keeping the fiery temperaments of academy students in check for decades.

Of course, there were those who did not comply…

The neatly arranged plaza.

While not as luxurious to suit the tastes of nobles, the intricately designed monuments and decorations were flawless.

The long corridors and arched marble pillars next to them evoked the image of a temple, hinting at the academy’s purity, but…

“The security is tight.”

“I told you! They’re patrolling everywhere! Wouldn’t they be at one of the academy’s main attractions like the plaza?”

It was like watching AI training in some game.

The golems, moving according to a certain pattern, were everywhere you looked.

They might be smaller than the training golems seen during the tutorial, but the sheer number of them seemed overwhelming.

Elizabeth whispered as she approached.

“You still plan to steal in such a place? Wouldn’t you like to change your mind now?”

“Oh, are you trying to act as if this never happened? Then, will you refund the wish grant?”

I declared boldly to her, who turned her head away, avoiding my gaze.

“Me, Frost Mane. Whatever I target, I’ve never missed. Faithful to desires, whether it’s emotions or objects.”

“…The former doesn’t need to be said out loud.”

Elizabeth, who hasn’t stopped sighing since meeting me, unfolded her fan. No, she straightened her cleverly modified coral branch staff.

Depending on the situation, it serves as a staff, and at times like now, as a fan.

She naturally adapted it without saying a word.

‘She definitely has the makings of a thief’s assistant.’

“Phew, never thought I’d actually use this. But you’re sure it works, right?”

“Of course. Didn’t Bathory guarantee it?”

-Frost Mane had a hard time with this magic due to incompatibility, but you were born for this magic!

Even the critical Bathory couldn’t help but praise her talent.

The look on Elizabeth’s face as she cast the spell, still in disbelief, was quite something to see.

“Why not let Bathory do it? Why me…”

“That’s because it would be troublesome if things got too big.”

According to Bathory, within a domain of a great mage, casting magic above a certain scale could allow others to detect each other’s magical power.

And this academy is swarming with great mages and those of similar caliber.

‘It’s too precious to use Bathory here.’

Though rumors of me controlling a demon had been spread, with all the talk about freshmen and grade exams, it had probably slipped everyone’s minds by now. She was essentially my hidden card.

Fortunately, it seemed magic that allowed one to hide in shadows didn’t fall within the detectable range, but any other magic still needed to be tread carefully.

“From the moment you decided to steal it, the game had already become big.”

“If we don’t get caught, that’s all that matters.”

“Hurry up and go, then.”

Her mana, fluffy as clouds, seeped into me.

Soon, her cotton-candy-pink eyes fluttered.

“…Even the caster can’t be seen.”

The magic Bathory praised was ‘invisibility magic.’ But, being a special magic, it was rare to learn and to teach, with few users even in the original work.

I hadn’t expected Elizabeth to be a suitable user.

“Ha-ha, this really is a perfect skill for a thief. How about making your debut as my assistant now?”

“Forget it! Who are you trying to drag into this?”

Chortling, I stood in front of the dean’s golem.

Though it was within reach with just an outstretched hand.

[No issues during duty. Moving to the next patrol location.]

The golem started walking past the corridor as if nothing was amiss.

Even if they operated around the clock, 24/7, they couldn’t filter out an invisible intruder.

‘This is going to be easier than I thought.’

I quietly followed behind it.

The golem’s patrol route was so tightly guarded it seemed impossible to find a gap.

However, the moment the golems switched places during their patrol was the opportunity.

It felt like electricity was flowing through every joint in my fingers.

The thrill of stealing artifacts, the fruits of someone else’s effort!

At the Baltrion Count’s residence and at the auction house, just recalling the intense emotions I had felt made my shoulders twitch involuntarily. The moment when the golems passing by each other.

Sleung.

The ornamental holy sword stuck in the ground in front of the plaza’s fountain. It revealed its roots far more easily than I had anticipated. To others, it must have seemed as if a sword suddenly floated up into the air and then disappeared.

…But there were no witnesses.

‘I should finish this.’

I remembered the words from the book that had turned me into a phantom thief.

[Being a third-rate pickpocket is about clumsily touching and getting caught.]

[Being a second-rate pickpocket is about slipping the wallet into your hand without the other person noticing and smoothly making your escape.]

[However, a phantom thief must always be a first-rate pickpocket.]

[Being a first-rate pickpocket means, at the same time as stealing the wallet, placing an empty wallet back into the person’s pocket.]

Meaning to delay the victim’s realization as much as possible.

‘In other words, it’s enough if it just appears fine on the surface, right?’

And then.

[Additionally, since it’s most important for a phantom thief to announce their presence, leave your mark in the wallet!]

‘That author had quite the bad taste, I must say.’

Of course, I, who had received his teachings, wasn’t much different.

Not hiding my joy, with a grin spreading across my face, I quickly put the displayed holy sword into my bag and took out something else.

The size, appearance, and even the weight.

Creating a replica identical in every aspect wasn’t difficult.

After devouring about five volumes praising and chronicling the great holy sword, collecting only the overlapping descriptions, and requesting it, they produced a perfect replica.

So, in my bag was the model of the real holy sword. And stuck in the ground was a fake of the fake.

The switch of the holy sword models was achieved purely through the strength of fingers and wrists. And the dexterity that transcended art and reached the realm of magic, of sorcery.

‘Good, it’s just like the real thing. Now I just need to sneak out.’

Sluh.

As the golem was about to finish its patrol and return to its place, I quietly moved to escape from there.

Just as I was about to slip past the students walking in the plaza and almost out.

[Beep, Warning, Warning!]

The golem, closing the distance in an instant, leaped towards where the holy sword was, emitting a heavy mechanical sound.

‘…Did, did I get caught?!’

Just as I thought I might have to swiftly destroy this golem and escape.

[Access prohibited. Souvenir damage signal detected. Please step back immediately.]

Passing by me, who was in an invisible state, and blocking someone approaching the fake fake holy sword.

Realizing the earlier warning wasn’t directed at me, I exhaled the breath I had been holding in case I was discovered.

I thought it was just on guard duty.

I hadn’t accounted for the damage signal detection sensor. It was a miscalculation. Something I didn’t know about in the latter half of the academy, either due to the dean’s cooperation or because the dean had died.

But who is that person?

‘Is that Elizabeth? Such timely support is commendable, but…’

Drawing attention now wouldn’t be good.

Wondering if she had intentionally drawn the golem’s attention to herself, I checked the person.

‘No.’

Someone clad in a drab, ash-colored robe.

Such an item would be detestable to her, with her tidy nature and born nobility.

But before that.

I knew who owned that robe.

‘…Why are they active already?’

The emblem sewn on the robe, a mix of black and red stars.

He was indeed a member of ‘Kerzo,’ a cult that committed acts of terror across the empire, including the academy, according to the original story.

The golem’s warning was cut short because a sword, brimming with aura, cleaved through its waist. Additionally, the aftermath slightly clipped my hair, but I didn’t even have the time to care about that.

“Is this the pride of the academy, a pile of scrap metal? It’s not as impressive as I thought.”

The face revealed by the aftermath under the robe. And the voice, seasoned and worn as if soaked in the passage of years. Its identity was immediately clear to me.

[Boss]

[Sword Demon]

A fanatical cultist who follows the four calamities, including the Demon King, and sings of the destruction of the Manhett Empire. That a major officer had personally made an appearance was unexpected.

He pulled out the model of the holy sword that I had switched earlier and examined it thoroughly.

“Hmph, even the fortune-teller is doomed. Despite it being just a model of the holy sword, he babbled about it having a faint power.”

The object he threw to the ground was soon trampled and crushed.

[Intruder detected! Intruder detected! Execute immediate execution!]

The blades of various patrol golems pointed towards the Sword Demon.

“Ha ha! These piles of scrap metal dare to challenge me without knowing their place! Come at me then! Watch as I protect the students you cherish so dreadfully!”

The clash of swords and the sound of metal ringing. And the heavy thud as massive chunks of metal fell to the ground.

Amidst the chaos, I quietly moved away in my invisible state.

‘Why did the Sword Demon raid this place alone? Was he checking the academy’s security in advance?’

No.

That would only heighten the dean’s vigilance. There was absolutely no reason to take such a reckless action at the risk of that.

‘Or is it a butterfly effect due to the quick emergence of a saint threatening the calamities?’

But this, too, was too flimsy a reason. If the aim was to assassinate the saint, even the full force invested would be insufficient, let alone just sacrificing a Sword Demon.

‘Forget it.’

What’s the point in logically analyzing the actions of fanatics? Their irrationality is often more understandable intuitively.

Even though they appear as major villains in the academy part of the story.

There’s a reason they remain mere terrorists, not mainstream. They neither possess overwhelming power like Bathory or the high nobles.

Nor do they have a powerful force like a ducal family.

Even if individuals possess exceptional strength, they disdain each other.

So, his end would likely be surrounded and killed by golems, just like that.

“Ugh, these damn things! Attacking without end.”

Just hearing that rough breathing, the future felt not far off. But.

‘That’s all an act, isn’t it?’

With the Sword Demon’s abilities, he wouldn’t really die. Rather, it’s an ideal situation for me.

A scapegoat for the theft of the holy sword has been found. It’s none of my business now, so I should just remove myself from the situation…

‘…Wait.’

Granted, Kerzo isn’t considered a significant terror organization, but they’re still a hostile force. There were times when they put students in danger.

Their plots had often troubled the player, and there were not a few instances where a must-recruit talent was injured or driven away because of them.

Because of them, my ’37th Elite Party_Final Revision_Revision 2′ couldn’t be completed.

‘Rather than ending this with just knocking down one Sword Demon…’

Wouldn’t it be better to tie them up like dried yellow corvinas and deal with them all at once in a single swoop?

* * *

“…Tch. I shouldn’t have listened to that fortune-teller. I thought these golem creatures were nothing special.”

Like a swarm of ants. Watching the steel ant legion slowly tighten their encirclement to bite at his neck made his skin crawl.

“That academy dean is a monster.”

But it was fine. This body was just a spare. Even if he fell here, he could simply switch to another body. That was why he had recklessly charged in, wasn’t it?

‘Hmm. A frontal confrontation with the academy seems difficult.’

There was, of course, a gain. The gap between nobles and commoners he had witnessed inside the academy was more hideous than expected. Planning to disguise himself first as a common laborer or shopkeeper, and then possibly dying at the hands of a noble as part of his scheme,

Just as the Sword Demon was starting to falter under the strength, ready to offer his neck to the golem’s blade,

“What are you doing? Giving up doesn’t suit my followers.”

He snapped to attention at the voice whispering in his ear. Hastily, he bisected the approaching golems with his aura-imbued sword, shouting.

“Who, who are you!”

“You refer to them as calamities. Among them… hmm.”

The voice paused momentarily, only continuing after felling two golems.

“Call me the Calamity of Many Faces.”

Whether it was pleased to meet its follower, or it was simply enjoying the current situation, the voice was filled with mirth.

Hyun-soo looked at the burning Minor World Tree and found the answer.

Pouring water on it doesn’t work, nor does leaving the water running like a faucet.

Then, creating a small sea and putting the World Tree into it.

But it was impossible to create a sea wide enough to fill a playground.

An emergency-made spear.

[It is of Epic grade.]

[The effect application rate is 58%.]

To be honest, it is not satisfactory. The effect application rate stems from how well the opponent understands the artifact being made.

Understanding.

The very notion of understanding an artifact that creates water is nonsensical for Hyun-soo, a real-world blacksmith.

However, it can provide inspiration.

By making this spear just now, Hyun-soo gained a great inspiration.

Hyun-soo looked at the ‘sea’ that held the Minor World Tree.

It was like looking at an aquarium.

An aquarium formed in a circle.

An invisible, translucent barrier prevented the water from leaking out.

About 8 meters in radius.

The aquarium was tall enough to fill the Minor World Tree, about 20 meters in height.

‘The next artifact to be produced will be much better.’

Eventually, the emergency-made spear disappeared.

Whoosh-

[You have avoided the small Fire.]

[The legend held by the Minor World Tree will be revealed.]

[The Minor World Tree is a tree that can only live in the sea. If it can be made to live on land, it will bear special fruits.]

Ding!

[Quest: The Real Minor World Tree]

Grade: S

Restriction: One who has stopped the small Fire of the Minor World Tree

Reward: Negotiation power, special fruits.

Penalty for failure: Negotiation ends.

Description: A huge Fire will hit in a few days. If you can stop that Fire, the Minor World Tree will finally belong to the Praham Kingdom.

Special fruits.

It is stated that one can obtain them if they can make this Minor World Tree root in this land and live fully.

And Hyun-soo heard Ben’s murmuring as he looked at the Minor World Tree.

“…The legend was true.”

Hyun-soo heard a notification that his affinity with Ben had increased.

In effect, Hyun-soo had succeeded in winning Ben’s heart.

Ben started to say something incomprehensible.

“Pon’s mane hair, fairy dust, orichalcum, black mithril, the Mountain King’s claw, Kradan spear technique… tell me.”

Hyun-soo was puzzled.

Each of the things he listed was an astronomically valuable artifact material in the Praham Kingdom.

Things that couldn’t be bought with money.

‘What is he asking me to tell him?’

Hyun-soo was puzzled.

“If you save the Minor World Tree, I will give you one of these.”

“…!”

Hyun-soo was surprised.

Before and after Hyun-soo was about to leave this place, Ben’s expression had changed.

Hyun-soo had defeated Frak.

But that wasn’t a proof of skill.

Therefore, the distrust that had filled his eyes.

Ben, whose distrust had vanished, said,

“I don’t know what you will make, but if it saves the Minor World Tree and makes me stronger than I am now, why would I hesitate? Of course, I will give you money separately, so think carefully and speak.”

Of course, this was assuming that Hyun-soo would succeed in making such a thing.

“The artifact you create will be key to the negotiation and the Minor World Tree.”

Hyun-soo felt warmth in his chest.

Hyun-soo had bluntly answered Ben’s question about why he hadn’t run away.

Because it was something he cherished.

Even if it might seem cheesy and blatantly trying to win the king’s heart, he believed.

That Ben’s attitude towards him would change.

“Please, with your spear, protect my memories.”

A continent’s top 10 legend.

The supreme in spears.

A named NPC.

The owner of a state twice the size of Goyard.

At his polite voice, Hyun-soo’s heart throbbed.

The eyes of faith looking at him.

“I will do my best.”

Hyun-soo gave a small bow, showing respect to the king of the enemy nation.

And Ben moved forward with a small smile.

“Since there’s a forge right next to us, get started on the work right away. I must prepare to stop the ‘villains’ now.”

The story must be spreading rapidly among the nobles and blacksmiths who have seen the small Fire.

Endless discussions about the necessity to cut down the Minor World Tree would be happening.

For Hyun-soo, too, the question of whether he should take such a risk was indeed troubling.

“Will this be alright?”

To that question, Ben, setting aside his memories and fondness for the Minor World Tree, said coldly,

“Every year, tens of thousands starve to death in the Praham Kingdom.”

Yes, saving the Minor World Tree was not merely Ben’s greed.

As the Kingdom of Praham is a land of blacksmiths, there are shortages.

“One of the Minor World Tree’s fruits is known to alleviate hunger. Wouldn’t it be worth trying if it can reduce the number of those dying from hunger?”

Hyun-soo came to understand.

Ben might be a quirky old man, but deep down, he is a king who cherishes his people.

That his heart was larger than clinging to memories or such.

Soon after Ben left, Hyun-soo also quickly followed.

He opened the door to the forge located right next to the garden and entered.

Hyun-soo had already gained inspiration on what artifact to make.

‘That spear was something I made countless times in my childhood.’

And he thought that spear would be perfect for Ben, who mainly uses spears.

Just thinking about Ben holding that spear made his heart flutter.

‘This one artifact will become the greatest link connecting me and Ben.’

So much was determined by a mere artifact.

Negotiation power, contribution, and activity in the world of the Praham Kingdom.

All of it was tied to Hyun-soo’s growth.

Before he knew it, the smelting and refining of materials for the spearhead were finished, leaving only the forging and polishing.

After swiftly completing the forging and polishing, he then made the spear shaft.

An indistinguishable noise buzzed in his ears.

He was so focused that he couldn’t hear what the notification was.

That’s how deeply Hyun-soo was engrossed.

To the point where he had no idea how much time had passed.

And then, a notification suddenly jolted Hyun-soo awake.

[You are approaching a legend.]

It was a sound that always made his heart race.

But he shouldn’t be complacent.

‘Approaching a legend means it’s not yet a legend.’

The completion of the spear shaft was nearing its end.

He must not relax but instead put even more effort and attention into it.

Then.

“……!?”

Hyun-soo’s face twisted terribly, and the hairs on his back stood on end.

‘What’s this…?’

As his level and strength increased, his senses became more special.

He felt a massive danger emanating from the Minor World Tree.

And then.

Kwaahhh-

An enormous roar exploded.

It was three times the magnitude of the explosion Hyun-soo had previously felt.

[A new story begins.]

And the notification that followed made Hyun-soo uneasy.

[The Minor World Tree is in great rage.]

[The Minor World Tree’s fury will not stop until it burns everything around it.]

Ding!

[Sudden Quest: The Rage of the Minor World Tree]

Grade: SS

Restriction: One who has received the Minor World Tree’s proposition

Reward: The highest-grade Minor World Tree.

Penalty for failure: Revocation of negotiator qualifications.

Description: Someone has angered the Minor World Tree. By quelling the massive Fire, you are to stop the massive Fire.

Hyun-soo looked at the description with a puzzled expression.

A sudden quest.

It might have been issued by someone, or it could simply be assigned by the system.

Yet, this sudden quest’s restriction is written as follows:

‘One who has received the Minor World Tree’s proposition.’

He found himself in a situation he did not wish for. The reward was astonishingly great.

‘Originally, the Minor World Tree was a legendary material of intermediate level.’

But the reward mentioned offering the highest-grade Minor World Tree.

Kurrrr-

Hyun-soo heard the ongoing roar.

Yet, Hyun-soo decided to act true to himself.

***

Pan, the strategist of the Praham Kingdom, was the primary contributor to the current state of the Praham Kingdom.

He, who advises Ben or shares various strategies with him, also wishes for the safety and development of the nation.

However, this time, there was a clash of opinions between him and Ben.

“Others did not see, they all ran away from the burning flames. But I have seen it. The blacksmith Hyun (현) will stop the massive fire.”

Pan shook his head.

“It is something not even a hundred craftsmen could achieve.”

There are rumors in the Praham Kingdom of a hundred master blacksmiths.

That’s how great the blacksmiths there are supposed to be.

“It must be cut down immediately. So it cannot ignite a massive fire.”

Ben said,

“That should not be done. The legend says if the Minor World Tree is cut or harmed, it will unleash even greater fury.”

Pan felt suffocated.

Believing in such a mere legend?

“If Hyun fails, I myself will pull out the Minor World Tree and place it in the sea. So wait.”

The king was not listening.

And Pan, who came outside, met with the nobles.

The nobles who had seen the small Fire were despising the Minor World Tree.

And then Pan made a decision.

“I will take all the responsibility. Let’s cut down the Minor World Tree right now.”

He handed axes to hundreds of powerful knights.

Pan also doubted the fruits that the king was expecting.

‘There can’t be a fruit that prevents hunger.’

And with the hundreds of knights sent by the nobles, he looked at the Minor World Tree.

‘My lord, forgive me.’

Pan could no longer comprehend the king’s heart, caught up in memories and delusions.

“Strike!”

Hundreds of knights wielding axes began to strike the Minor World Tree.

Pzzzzt

Pzzzzt

Pzzzzt

It was after all just a tree.

The Minor World Tree began to be severely damaged.

And there was another reason Pan made this decision.

‘My lord, did you truly intend to give the leadership for peace to the Kingdom of Goyard?’

It was incomprehensible.

They laughed together, suggesting tasks that blacksmith Hyun couldn’t achieve.

But now, you fully trust him?

‘What are you enchanted by?’

Then.

[The Minor World Tree becomes enraged.]

Whoosh-

Suddenly, the Minor World Tree was engulfed in massive flames.

“What, what is this?”

Boom-

An unknown, translucent barrier formed over the entire garden.

Inside were ten nobles and hundreds of knights.

[The Minor World Tree will not stop until it kills everyone trying to harm it.]

[There will be a massive explosion in 30 seconds.]

Hearing that, Pan panicked.

Whoosh-

The flames grew fiercer, and the knights were thrown into confusion.

Fortunately, the 30 seconds had not yet passed, so the explosion had not occurred.

The problem was this.

Whoosh-

The acrid smoke spewing from the Minor World Tree.

That smoke had taken over the garden.

“Cough cough!”

“Aack!”

“Let me out!”

“Argh!”

Pan’s face twisted.

‘…Was this my misjudgment?’

He realized too late.

‘Did I kill them all?’

Pan, effectively the second in command of the kingdom, leaned against a wall and sat down, realizing his foolishness had led them all to the brink of death.

At that moment,

[The explosion occurs.]

Boom-!

A massive explosion occurred, and the knights and nobles instinctively shrank back.

Fortunately, the explosion spread in the opposite direction to where they were clustered.

Rumble-

The wall where the explosion reached crumbled.

And those present froze at once.

In the direction opposite to where they stood, the broken wall was now fully exposed.

Inside, a blacksmith was pushing back against the raging flames, with a shield inscribed with “Aegis” held behind him.

‘Why go to such lengths…?’

His hands moved as if possessed.

In this situation, it seemed he would not give up.

Pan was reminded of his conversation with Ben.

‘Why do you trust that negotiator so much, Your Majesty? After all, he is a person from an enemy country.’

Ben smiled bitterly.

‘It’s because of what he said that left a deep impression.’

What did he say?

‘Though it may break.’

Pan’s heart raced.

“Please…!”

The nobles looked at him as if begging.

“This blacksmith is really…”

The knights muttered with puzzled expressions, wondering what the mere blacksmith was trying to achieve.

Then,

[A fourth legend is written.]

As a new legend was born, everyone there heard a familiar sound.

Swoosh-

The sound was the melody of waves spreading tranquilly.

Act 69

Prev I TOC I Next

“Me, asking Julian for a favor?”

‘What on earth is he implying?’

The words baffled Elenoa, but she was not naive enough to show her confusion openly. The Julian she had known was foolish, or had been foolish. If she were Julian, she would have cunningly used the infamous label of ‘the smiling executioner’ and his position in ‘Closed Eyes’ to her political and economic advantage.

Until now, Julian had not shown such tendencies; he was merely a man who treated murder as a form of entertainment. However, something had changed, Elenoa was certain of it.

‘It must have been since he returned from that demon extermination mission at the frontier.’

His nature hadn’t changed; he was still the ‘smiling executioner’ and ‘the dog of the imperial family.’ But now, there was a spoonful of cunning and a spoonful of political color added to his character.

He didn’t act directly, but there was a sense that he was manipulating the overall flow from behind, like a mastermind.

‘Otherwise, he wouldn’t have caused such a disturbance at the banquet hosted by the eldest son of the Godric family.’

The reason Gerard provoked such an incident wasn’t really to expose the identity of ‘the Black Knight.’ That was just a superficial reason.

‘It was because he saw Julian as a rival.’

Is someone favored by the Archbishop, whether truthfully or falsely, connected to the ‘Black Knight’? If so, could this create even a slight crack in his solid trust? Gerard’s gamble had succeeded. However, Julian had naturally mingled with him and at the same time planned to gain the favor of the ‘eldest son’ of the Godric family.

During those brief moments of Gerard’s appearance and provocation, ‘that man must have thought that far.’ It was a thoroughly calculated move. Elenoa was sure it wasn’t spontaneous.

“My words weren’t that complicated. Diana hasn’t said a word, I see.”

“It’s just too preposterous to comment on.”

“Is that so? Haha.”

“There are many prying eyes around. Perhaps we should change our location?”

Saying this, Elenoa swept back her hair, and the beauty mark below her eye subtly made its presence known amidst her locks—an enchanting curse and a blessing that could easily manipulate the hearts of others.

This habitual gesture of Elenoa’s naturally activated, but Julian’s expression remained unchanged.

As they moved to a secluded area, Elenoa glanced back at Julian following her. His cryptic statement lingered in her mind.

‘I’m not the one asking for a favor, you are.’

Reaching a spot devoid of onlookers, Elenoa turned to face Julian. “This should be far enough, Sir Julian. What favor are you talking about exactly?”

“…Elenoa,” he paused, a technique he often used, giving himself a moment before responding, a tactic to maintain control of the conversation. Although she felt she might be led on by his answers, Elenoa needed to hear them.

“Sigh, yes?”

“Have you ever considered… returning to your family’s ‘original position’?”

Elenoa’s posture slowly shifted towards Julian. While her face showed little change, the mix of emotions underneath was something she couldn’t hide.

‘How does he know?’

Confusion. It had been a while since she had felt this way.

“What exactly are you implying?” she asked.

“The literal meaning,” Julian replied, with a subtle smile forming on his lips.

Elenoa almost felt caught off guard. ‘He hasn’t revealed his true intentions yet. I’m just assuming.’

She composed herself and continued, “Hmm, I don’t understand what you mean. As you know, my family has a long history within the empire…”

She knew she couldn’t show too much interest. If Julian caught on to that, regardless of his intentions, he could easily steer the conversation.

“Ah, perhaps I’ve been too circumspect. Let me be ‘direct’. The Archbishop position…”

Seeing the slight tremor beneath Elenoa’s eyes, Julian pressed further.

“Don’t you desire it?”

Elenoa was taken aback by Julian’s words and internally began to calculate the various possibilities that this conversation might unfold into.

“The position of Archbishop… It doesn’t quite suit me. But how about you, Sir Julian? It seems like you would fit the role of Archbishop quite well…”

She needed to understand his true intentions.

“I am content being ‘the dog of the imperial family.’ A ‘dog’ does not bite its master. Haha, but wouldn’t that ‘position’ be special for your family, Miss Elenoa?”

As they lightly probed each other’s intentions, the mention of ‘family’ forced Elenoa to draw her metaphorical sword first.

“Are you suggesting you intend to rebel against Sir Tenellon?”

“It seems my words were heard that way.”

“Because that is indeed what you said.”

As Elenoa spoke, she watched for any change in Julian’s expression. His face was impassive, like a mask.

“Did you not join us to gain power, Sir Julian?”

Although his demeanor had softened, Julian was known to be a person capable of anything to overcome his mentor. What would he gain by rebelling against Tenellon?

“Is that supposed to be a problem?”

“Why not continue as we have been? Sir Tenellon favors you, and in time, he will surely reward you accordingly…”

“Haha.”

Julian’s brief laugh caused Elenoa to frown slightly.

“What’s so funny?”

“You seem to misunderstand my words, Miss Elenoa.”

Julian walked slowly and broke off a tree branch.

“I don’t particularly like the words ‘rebellion’ or ‘insurrection.’ You should know why. And I am not suggesting we overturn the Dawn Society from within to seize that ‘position.'”

Elenoa felt annoyed by his coy attitude but struggled to keep her composure.

“You, who are so favored by Sir Tenellon, still do not understand. It seems Sir Tenellon is considering inheriting the long-vacant position of ‘Grand Archbishop’ of the Dawn Society.”

“Yes.”

“The Grand Archbishop, you say?”

Trying to appear nonchalant, Elenoa watched as Julian responded, and she subtly bit her lip to conceal her reaction.

The position of Grand Archbishop in the Dawn Society is somewhat different from other denominations. The only one who has reached that position so far is the one who founded the Dawn Society for the first time, Ollent Demicel. Yes, Elenoa’s father.

‘I don’t particularly attach significance to that position, but…’

She couldn’t help feeling a little uneasy, but curiosity arose.

‘How did he know?’

“You don’t look well. Do you have any problems?”

“No, not at all! It’s just time for Tenellon to go, I suppose.”

“Yes, that’s correct. It might seem a bit premature timing-wise, but it’s for the cohesion of the Dawn Society, so it can be considered.”

‘Cohesion.’

With a hint of bitterness lingering on her tongue, Elenoa pondered Tenellon’s intentions.

‘Is it because he called members from other branches into the capital?’

In fact, Elenoa was also aware of some movements in other branches.

That is precisely the existence of those who oppose Tenellon’s actions and seek to control the Dawn Society.

The nucleus of power Tenellon holds in the Dawn Society is not the human himself, but the relic ‘Holy Grail,’ rather than ‘Tenellon’ himself.

‘If someone who can use Holy Grail appears, those who are dissatisfied with Tenellon will rise.’

The reason for deciding to succeed to the position of Grand Archbishop might be to concentrate the power of the Dawn Society more on the capital.

As long as there are many hidden figures within the Dawn Society, they can deal with dissatisfied individuals at any time within the capital.

“Isn’t my proposal appealing enough?”

Suddenly, Julian’s voice interrupted Elenoa, who was organizing her thoughts.

If Tenellon becomes the Grand Archbishop, the position of the Archbishop, who oversees the bishops and monsignors under him, will inevitably become vacant.

It’s irresistible.

‘So that’s what it meant.’

His words were not a request but a request for acceptance.

Now she understood.

Rustle.

Once again, as he snapped a twig, the sound of it breaking echoed from his fingertips.

‘But where did he acquire such detailed information?’ Elenoa wondered, puzzled by Julian’s extensive knowledge and his ability to manipulate it to his advantage.

Asking him directly seemed futile; she knew all too well that Julian was not one to openly share his sources or intentions, always playing his cards close to his chest.

As Elenoa considered the implications of an Archbishop’s position becoming vacant and potentially hers for the taking, her perspective shifted. The way Julian phrased his statement earlier now made sense to her. She understood the nuance behind his words and the power play at hand.

‘If someone among the bishops is to fill that position…’ Then the course of action she needed to take was clear.

“I see why you put it that way, suggesting I am asking for a favor,” Elenoa acknowledged, the pieces falling into place in her mind.

Julian turned to face her, his gaze piercing. “So, what will you do now? The astute Miss Elenoa wouldn’t just let such a favorable opportunity slip away, would she?” His tone was light, but his face held a smug satisfaction that made the moment feel like a pact with the devil.

“Alright! I formally ‘ask’ then. Help me become the Archbishop,” she declared, her voice carrying a mixture of resolve and anticipation.

“Well chosen,” Julian chuckled, approvingly. As he spoke, Elenoa noticed his hand brushing against the leaves of a nearby plant. Something about that action caught her attention.

‘Hmm?’

Pieces of crushed leaves clung to his fingers—a small but telling detail. Normally, Julian’s hands would be dry, always ready to wield a sword without any slip that could endanger his life. For a swordsman, clean and dry hands are crucial to maintaining grip and control over the weapon.

Turning back to the leaf fragments sticking to his hand, which implied moisture, she pondered what it meant. ‘Was Julian nervous? The formidable Julian?’

What could possibly make him nervous? If anyone could detect deception or emotional undercurrents, it was Elenoa, especially skilled in dark magic and sensitive to emotional shifts.

With a hint of suspicion, Elenoa glanced subtly at Julian’s expression. As usual, the man with the narrow eyes maintained a crescent smile, a faintly mocking grin playing on his lips.

That smile felt like a sneer to her. ‘Could it be? No, surely not…’

Elenoa wrestled with her thoughts, caught between doubt and the unfolding reality of their alliance, wondering about the true depth of Julian’s intentions and the emotional play behind his seemingly collected facade.

Round 20

Prev | TOC | Next

It was the unexpected appearance of an item.

I had been wondering how long it would take to level up by synthesizing the two slimes that were summoned each day, but who knew such an item existed.

‘If I grow Mark2 more and then clone it… No? If I just clone Poooh and then synthesize it, I’ll have a level 11 slime, right?’

Lost in all sorts of imagination, I held a slime model in my hand and stood still as my companions approached and asked me.

“Kyu-seong?”

“Brother!”

Ah, maybe I should look around a bit more.

I set down the slime copier and followed Han Seok-jun, laughing as if nothing had happened.

“It caught my eye because it looked cute.”

“It’s called a slime copier. I know about it. But it’s such an ambiguous item that it actually went unsold at an auction…”

It seems it ended up here because it couldn’t be included in a collection but had nowhere else to go.

I asked casually, just in case.

“Do items like the slime copier often appear at auctions?”

“As far as I know, this is the first time an item has been registered under the name ‘slime copier.'”

“Ah, I see.”

That’s a bit disappointing.

If copiers were readily available, I would have been copying slimes left and right.

We finished the first level and moved on to the second. The others seemed to think I would definitely choose something from this level, as I showed no interest in the first.

The second level definitely had more item-like items on display. Honestly, taking just one could probably fetch anything from thousands to billions.

“You can take your time looking around. We’ve set aside time especially for you, Kyu-seong.”

“Ah, thank you.”

But even in the second level, nothing particularly caught my eye. Of course, it would be nice to have, but nothing was really pulling me in.

‘It has to be the slime copier.’

Whether I use it on Poooh or later to synthesize and level up slimes, it would save an immense amount of time.

Using it on a level 10 slime would save almost years of time.

‘Time is money.’

To me now, a few years are worth more than billions.

It might even be worth more.

“I’ve made my decision.”

“Ah, you don’t need to look further?”

“Yes.”

I looked around once more just in case, but still, nothing appealed to me. Nor was there anything else there that would be more helpful to me now than the slime copier.

“I’ll take the slime copier.”

“Ah! The slime copier… Huh?”

Han Seok-jun parroted my words but then tilted his head as if he had heard something wrong. The other two also looked at me with disbelief.

“Kyu-seong! A slime copier?”

Jeong So-yeon asked incredulously, and I firmly repeated my choice.

“I have chosen the slime copier.”

“No, even if the second level was so-so, to choose that item…”

Kang Hanul seemed to think that I chose the slime copier out of defiance because I didn’t like the other items.

Towards such a Kang Hanul, I slowly shook my head.

“I really need that item. You saw it too, Hanul. I didn’t touch the other items, but I did touch the slime copier.”

“Are you really going to take that item? It didn’t even sell.”

“That’s why I think it’s fortunate. It’s like fate brought us together.”

As I shrugged and answered, everyone looked at me with a sense of disbelief.

Of course, if I could have chosen items from the third level or higher, I might have considered it more, but in the second level, I couldn’t find anything more valuable than the slime copier.

“Kyu-seong, you are quite a unique person.”

Han Seok-jun smiled faintly and led me back to the first level.

Then, returning to where the slime copier was, I surreptitiously checked everyone’s reaction.

“Is it okay if I take it?”

“Of course. That item now belongs to you, Kyu-seong.”

I picked up the item, which looked just like a simple slime model. Already, I was bombarded with all sorts of thoughts about where to use it.

* * *

After Lee Kyu-seong left.

The remaining Han Seok-jun, Kang Hanul, and Jeong So-yeon shared their opinions.

The guild leader, the first team leader, and the second team leader.

In fact, these three had been specifically prepared to meet Lee Kyu-seong.

“It’s not exactly clear what the ability is, but it seems to be related to slimes.”

Jeong So-yeon, who had experienced the item’s effects firsthand during the Yeongdeungpo dungeon raid, had become his most ardent fan.

“Whatever the ability is, our guild should scout him first.”

“I mentioned this last time, but it seemed like Kyu-seong didn’t want to join a guild yet. Do you think I wouldn’t have proposed it?”

“That’s because the second team leader was too soft on him. Can’t help it. Here, I’ll use my beauty as a seduction tactic…”

“Puhahaha! Kid, what seduction are you talking about?”

“What?! Did I say everything?”

Jeong So-yeon had been joking, but she bristled at the unexpected attack.

Amidst the usual quarrel between the two, Han Seok-jun shook his head with a troubled smile.

“Both of you, stop.”

“Ahem!”

“Yes…”

“I do agree that we need to scout Kyu-seong. Whatever the ability, whether it’s Level 1 or not, we saw potential in his item. However, I think there’s no need to rush.”

Han Seok-jun checked the data reported on his tablet.

“Both the crops and the items made from those crops… We might try individually, but it won’t be possible to replicate exactly what Kyu-seong has made.”

“Hmm.”

Kang Hanul nodded quietly in agreement.

Han Seok-jun and Kang Hanul.

Both were first-generation awakened beings.

They could boast of having more experience than any other awakened being so far, but even they felt Kyu-seong was a unique presence.

“That’s why I think we should first build a calm relationship with Kyu-seong and see if there’s anything we can help with from our side before approaching him.”

“Finding what Kyu-seong lacks or presenting what he needs first, that’s a good approach,” Han Seok-jun’s words led the other two to fall deep in thought. They didn’t know much about Kyu-seong except that he was a Level 1 awakened person with a unique ability.

“Isn’t he perhaps weak in terms of physical strength?”

“Why would Kyu-seong need physical strength if he’s not going to fight?”

“He probably isn’t lacking money, either. A person with such abilities wouldn’t.”

“Hmm. That’s also true.”

A misunderstanding had arisen, but no one thought that Kyu-seong was poor.

“Ah, that reminds me, I first heard about him through Choi Young-seong. Maybe you know something more about Kyu-seong?”

“Last I heard, he was helping to treat Kim Si-young.”

“That’s right.”

“Wait, this is the first I’m hearing about this. Kyu-seong is treating Si-young?”

Jeong So-yeon asked in surprise, then recalled the fruit juice she had consumed.

“Ahh! That had detoxifying effects too!”

“We don’t know the results yet. I contacted Choi Young-seong this morning, and he was analyzing the juice and nearly finished. But if Kyu-seong’s item does treat Kim Si-young…”

Kang Hanul also thought of other individuals who had been poisoned that day.

“If Deputy Guild Leader Kim Si-young’s treatment is confirmed, it will shake up the awakening industry.”

Han Seok-jun’s statement was almost a declaration, given the significance of Kim Si-young, who was Choi Young-seong’s wife and the deputy guild leader of the Ara Hongryeon Guild.

“The ones who tackled the Dungeon of Sin were a multinational coalition, only notable people participated.”

“If Kim Si-young’s treatment becomes known, other countries might also seek out Kyu-seong.”

“Kyu-seong is a bigger deal than we thought.”

“We can’t just stand by and watch, then.”

Kang Hanul smiled slyly, causing Han Seok-jun to feel an ominous vibe.

“Again, no forceful methods. We need to first see what Kyu-seong wants and approach him slowly.”

“Brother! Who do you think I am! Of course, I won’t use such despicable methods! I genuinely like Kyu-seong as a person! So, getting to know him better comes first.”

Kang Hanul’s gaze then shifted to Jeong So-yeon.

“Hey, team leader! Try to get closer to Kyu-seong!”

“What, what? You were calling me a kid and dismissing me just a moment ago?”

“A kid is a kid! But isn’t it easier for someone of a similar age to Kyu-seong to get closer to him?”

“That’s… true.”

“Please, kid.”

“Alright. But first, please stop calling me a kid!”

* * *

After parting with the Ara Hongryeon Guild, I returned home before heading back to the dungeon. It had been a day filled with unexpected events. Now, only a small slime model and the potato side dish Jae-seong had packed for me remained in my heavy bag.

“Ugh!”

I stretched my aching body and examined the slime copier.

When and where to use it was the biggest issue.

“Mark2 is now level 3.”

Mark2, wearing a straw hat, was diligently tending to the field, bouncing his soft body.

If Mark2 had been level 10, I would have used the copier on him without a second thought.

It seemed I had to be cautious because of Poooh’s question mark.

“It’s a dilemma.”

Muttering, I took out the potato side dish Jae-seong had made.

“I’ll enjoy this meal.”

The potatoes were diced into bite-sized pieces and simmered in soy sauce. I picked one up and brought it to my mouth.

“Mmm!”

Indeed, the taste did not disappoint. The ingredients were so good that it seemed impossible to ruin this dish unless it was burnt.

‘The mashed potatoes made at the Ara Hongryeon Guild were delicious too.’

Although I only got to eat one bite because four of us were sharing it, it was a completely different taste from just boiled potatoes. Because of that, I had been pestered for a while about getting more potatoes.

Poooh?

Seeing me eating, Poooh wobbled over curiously.

“Right, how can I eat this tasty dish all by myself? We should all enjoy it together.”

It just so happened that there was enough for me to give each of them a piece.

I handed a piece to the approaching Poooh and then got up to go and feed the others who were working.

‘Work can’t take a break!’

The boss himself going around to give snacks to his workers. What a welfare-rich farm this was.

“Work hard. I’ll occasionally treat you to such foods.”

Wriggle! Wriggle!

Seeing them dance happily made me feel proud.

Looking at the crops that were nearing harvest, I felt a sense of abundance.

“Carrots will be ready soon, and the unharvested potatoes just about now.”

Eggplants and cucumbers, as well as Embergrills, also looked ready to be harvested soon. The only things left were strawberries and sweet potatoes.

“Strawberries and sweet potatoes are taking longer than expected.”

Especially with strawberries—I had thought they’d be quick to harvest since I had experience growing tomatoes, but they took longer than expected. Still, they were growing, so I was patiently waiting.

“Ah, I’ve decided.”

After feeding the potato side dish to the slimes, I made up my mind. While there was no need to rush, with each day being different lately, I felt the need to roll with the snowball of rapid growth.

“Using the copier on Mark2 now would be a loss.”

Wouldn’t it be more satisfying to use it after creating at least a level 10 like Poooh?

However, getting Mark2 to level 10 could take almost a year, maybe even more.

“There’s still some cooldown left, so let’s just think about it until then.”

But my mind was already half made up to use it on Poooh. If I don’t change my mind by tomorrow, I plan to clone Poooh and create a level 11 slime.

Who knows?

Maybe reaching level 11 will solve Poooh’s question mark?

It probably won’t be just an ordinary slime.

“Until then! Keep up the good work!”

Poooh!

Wriggle, wriggle—

Squish!

Act 68

Prev I TOC I Next

“It’s still not responding. Why not?”

In a laboratory piled high with documents, Aileen clutched her head, frowning at the bright red gemstone inside a test tube. The content within the tube was the Soul Stone the Dawn Society desperately sought, but for Aileen, it was nothing more than a nuisance.

She looked at it resentfully.

“I’m sure I administered the magic fluid equivalent to the threshold, so why isn’t it reacting!?”

With an irritable tone, she began to sift through the stack of papers nearby again.

Then, she muttered in a voice laden with sighs, “The theory is supposed to be correct!”

“Ugh… Is my hypothesis wrong? If so, where do I need to make corrections… Ahhhhh!”

Thump!

Stepping on a document and falling, Aileen groaned.

After days and nights cooped up in the laboratory, visibly exhausted, she barely mustered the strength to get up.

“Wasn’t this my responsibility… When the body is tired, the mind also tires.”

She muttered weakly as she raised her right arm to her face.

Exhaustion surged like a tide, and her body felt as heavy as a sponge soaking up water.

Just as her heavy eyelids began to cover her eyes,

“I must find a way! There was no other option!”

She motivated herself with a petulant soliloquy and slowly got to her feet.

The association already disfavored her, viewing her as an ‘impure descendant’ of a noble lineage, eagerly trying to belittle her and strip her of her Fifth Rank, ‘Barungo.’

“Yeah, it’s humiliating to just let the old men of the association have their way. You can do it, Aileen! You’re a member of the Donassien family!”

Aileen clenched her fist and slowly stood up.

“Aileen, you can do this~”

Startled by a voice from behind, Aileen screamed louder than when she fell.

Turning her head hastily, she saw Diana, her colleague.

“Di, Diana…?”

“I thought it might be weird, so I came to check. Aileen, you always do strange things when you’re holed up in the lab for too long, don’t you?”

“When have I ever?”

“Well…, now?”

Hearing that, Aileen coughed awkwardly.

With a sheepish posture, Diana chuckled as she watched Aileen pick up a paper from the floor.

“Research is fine, but how about getting some fresh air? You haven’t come out for days.”

“If there had been any progress, maybe, but all that time holed up was wasted.”

“Wasted?”

Aileen nodded at the question.

In truth, this was something that should have brought oversight from other magicians, but Aileen decided to confide only in her colleague, Diana.

“Yeah, according to my hypothesis, the Soul Stone reacts not only to mana but also significantly to water… Huh?”

Just then, Aileen caught a faintly glowing Soul Stone in her sight.

“It reacted!”

“Huh?”

“It reacted!”

Watching Aileen dash towards the reaction chamber, Diana let out a dry laugh.

***

Having successfully documented the results of her experiment, Aileen left the laboratory with a much improved expression and headed to the Magic Tower to report her findings.

“Does this mean we have some free time until the seminar?”

“Yes, it’s really a relief.”

The somber air that had filled the lab just minutes before was nowhere to be found. Watching her, Diana couldn’t help but smile.

“It turned out well. I was planning to visit the White Cloth Store this weekend to look at some clothes. How about joining me, Aileen?”

“The White Cloth Store?”

At that name, Aileen paused to think. She remembered an incident involving Julian when she last visited the White Cloth Store to arrange for formal wear.

-Actually, Miss Aileen, you’re right. I quite like these clothes.

-Of course, Miss Aileen is also a member of the Donassien family.

When Julian appeared wearing the outfit she had recommended, Aileen couldn’t help but be taken aback.

A man so stubborn and convinced of his own aesthetic superiority, accepting her recommendation was unexpected.

‘And yet, initially, he tried desperately not to acknowledge it.’

Though his pride was easier to break than she thought, just the fact that Julian had acknowledged it made her smile involuntarily.

“Huh? Why are you smiling all of a sudden?”

Caught smiling to herself, Diana looked at her curiously.

Realizing it might look odd, Aileen managed her expression.

“No, it’s nothing.”

“So, what will you do?”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“I asked you earlier. I want to pick some clothes, let’s go to the White Cloth Store this weekend.”

“Sure, I don’t mind……………”

As Aileen was about to respond to Diana, her words trailed off when she caught sight of a familiar face.

It was Julian, emerging from the elevator at the center of the Magic Tower.

“Miss Aileen, you are here.”

“Sir Julian.”

With his bowler hat tipped politely, Julian greeted her. Aileen glanced at him briefly before cautiously speaking.

“What brings you here?”

“I’ve come to receive the report on the Soul Stone research. Didn’t the secretary’s office send you a document?”

“Oh!”

“Surely, you haven’t forgotten?”

Caught by Julian’s question, Aileen inwardly flinched.

“That’s troubling. People of the Donassien family are known for their meticulousness, but it seems that’s not the case with you, Miss Aileen.”

‘Ugh’

Aileen stiffened as Julian smiled subtly.

His narrow eyes made it difficult to read his emotions, but his tone was clearly mocking.

That made Aileen bristle slightly.

That man always had a way of adding unnecessary comments that grated on people, she thought to herself with a silent cluck of her tongue.

‘Huh?’

Aileen’s gaze then shifted to the coat Julian was wearing. It was the one she had picked out for him at the White Cloth Store.

The irritation that had been bubbling up inside her gradually subsided.

He was still wearing the outfit she had recommended. That meant, the man filled with ego had recognized her sense of art.

“The research on the Soul Stone has borne its fruits. I have already prepared the documents detailing the results.”

Buoyed by her newfound confidence, Aileen began to challenge Julian.

“Is that so? I thought you might have fled since I hadn’t seen you, and there were no results from the research as you had so confidently promised.”

“Not everyone likes to show off as you do!”

Aileen bristled at the mention of fleeing. She felt her voice rise, but it seemed she had opened her mouth intent on scoring a point against Julian.

“It seems you lack humility, Sir Julian. Maybe you could learn from the person who delivered the Soul Stone research to the secretary’s office?”

“Ah, Aileen.”

Diana, who was by her side, tried to calm her with a tone that suggested she should cool down, but Aileen, unable to hold back this time, continued to speak.

“I heard that person recognized the importance of the ‘Soul Stone’ immediately, despite its significance to the royal palace, and asked for no reward.”

“Oh?”

“Sir Julian, perhaps you need that kind of humility?”

Julian let out a short sigh, and Aileen believed she had flustered the usually composed strategist.

“Um, Aileen?”

“What? Diana.”

“The person who brought the Soul Stone you mentioned…”

“Yes?”

“That’s Sir Julian.”

At Diana’s words, Aileen flinched.

A moment of silence.

As the brief pause ended, Aileen, pretending nothing was amiss, spoke up.

“I’ll go fetch the report for the secretary’s office now, please wait.”

She spoke politely and turned to Diana, asking her to wait a moment, then turned and walked back to the lab.

Though she acted nonchalant, her ears were bright red.

As Aileen’s back disappeared completely from view, Diana let out an awkward laugh.

“Ha, haha… It’s been a long time, Sir Julian. Is this the first time since graduating from the Bayer Academy?”

“Yes, Diana.”

As his inscrutable gaze fixed on her, Diana began to feel nervous unwittingly.

“Are you still researching dark magic, as before?”

“Uh? Oh, well, it’s the magic I’ve been honing since before…”

“Indeed, the accumulation of experience is crucial for dark magic that interferes with the psyche.”

Although Diana was familiar with the name ‘Julian’ thanks to Aileen, facing him in person made her realize that there are things one cannot know without seeing with their own eyes.

A distinctly different image from his academy days. In the midst of trying to recall if she had ever committed any disrespectful acts towards Julian back then,

“Actually, one reason I came to the Magic Tower today was at the secretary’s office’s request, but also to see you, Diana.”

Diana was quite taken aback by the unexpected remark.

“Me?”

“Yes. Diana, the accessory used by Razlot was crafted by you.”

A mysterious name popped out of his mouth.

“…Yes? The accessory…?”

“The one containing magic that makes the wearer cringe.”

Watching Diana, Julian let out a short chuckle. Unable to read his emotions through his eyes, she felt as though Julian was thoroughly seeing through her.

“Thanks to that, Razlot was able to blend seamlessly into the secretary’s office. Seen as a harmless figure by the palace, like a small animal shrinking away,” Julian explained.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Sir Julian. I’m not even sure who Razlot is…”

“Are you still planning to deny it?” Julian’s voice carried a firm resolve.

Diana, taken aback, jolted slightly but soon composed herself, exhaling sharply. Her previously flustered eyes focused sharply as she ran a finger under her own eye, revealing a hidden charm point.

“Since when?”

The atmosphere had sharpened dramatically, a stark contrast to the ‘Diana’ of before.

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t play dumb. I’m asking since when you knew my true identity.”

“Well, I’m not quite sure myself.” Julian let out another short chuckle as Diana, or rather Elenoa, squinted as if pained by a headache.

However, the fact that Julian had come all the way here to discuss a sensitive ‘subject’ was somewhat relieving to Elenoa.

‘He must have come here with a request.’

If so, even if her secret was out, she could steer the conversation.

With that thought, she internally smiled.

“Alright, let’s change the subject. What really brings you here if not just for the Soul Stone report?”

“Didn’t I mention it was to pick up the report on the Soul Stone?”

“Nonsense.” Diana bit her lip slightly at Julian’s attempt to maintain a facade.

“It’s unlikely you’d come all the way to the Magic Tower just for some clerical work from the secretary’s office.”

“True, I actually came here on a more pressing personal request.”

As expected.

The realization that her suspicions were correct made Elenoa’s lips curl into a loose smile.

‘A pressing personal request, huh.’

Though she hadn’t heard what it was yet, the fact that he was making a request meant the control of the conversation could be hers.

Thinking this, Elenoa found Julian before her to be particularly odious.

To bring up the name ‘Elenoa’ so openly when he needed a favor was bold.

“For someone with a request, you don’t seem to know much about manners. I wouldn’t have thought Sir Julian to be such an unprincipled person.”

A desire to somehow get back at this odious man began to rise within her.

“Ah, it seems there’s some misunderstanding.”

As these tumultuous emotions began to settle like rust in her heart,

“It’s not that I’m asking you for a favor; rather, you’re the one who will be asking me.”

Julian once again dropped a cryptic line.

Strike 119

Prev I TOC I Next

After Frak’s departure, a beep sounded—

A letter had arrived from Barad.

Unfolding the letter revealed the negotiation details and Barad’s proposal.

‘Sending members of the Gale Squad as swordsmanship instructors to the Kingdom of Praham?’

It wasn’t a bad idea.

Moreover, the main character of this negotiation was truly Hyun-soo.

Hyun-soo sent a reply agreeing to everything.

Ding!

[Kingdom Quest: Negotiator]

Grade: A

Restriction: One proposed by the king

Reward: Negotiation skill increase by 10% and kingdom contribution by 5%.

Penalty for failure: Decreased intimacy with Barad.

Description: As a negotiator, you can increase your negotiation skill by accomplishing various tasks during your 10-day stay in the Kingdom of Praham, which will also affect the relationship between the Kingdom of Praham and the Kingdom of Goyard, as well as how well the Gale Squad members teach swordsmanship.

The quest revealed much.

Firstly, Hyun-soo, a Viscount  from Goyard, could stay in the Kingdom of Praham for 10 days.

And the negotiation skill increase from this negotiation.

‘Negotiation skill by 10% and contribution by 5%, huh.’

Currently, Hyun-soo’s kingdom contribution was at 29%.

Reaching 100% would normally grant the next title.

Suddenly, Hyun-soo remembered the 49 soldiers waiting in the Arham territory.

Normally, soldiers should seek their master after completing a certain level of training.

Yet, those who had chosen to wait.

Upon attaining the next title, Hyun-soo could bring them over.

‘Just wait a little longer.’

Then,

Creak—

The door opened, and Ben entered the garden.

Hyun-soo greeted him with a slight nod.

Spear Heaven Ben was rumored to be a rather eccentric king.

And Hyun-soo knew it too.

‘A notification that Ben’s favor has been won.’

It’s a concept slightly different from intimacy.

Through Barad’s letter, Hyun-soo knew they had initially planned to send him.

But he also knew Ben wouldn’t easily allow it.

Essentially, winning Ben’s heart was merely a ticket to the Kingdom of Praham’s entry.

‘His Majesty’s letter contained words hoping for satisfactory and pleasing results.’

But this too was doubtful.

Whether he could win over the old man’s heart.

Soon, Ben, with his hand on the Minor World Tree, got to the point.

“The Minor World Tree was a tree at the center of the sea.”

The old man, lost in memories, wore a subtle smile.

“At the tender age of 17, when I became the king of this Kingdom of Praham, I heard stories of the most beautiful tree in the sea. I was too young and it was tough, so I needed even the smallest story or achievement, so I ventured into the sea.”

Ben looked affectionately at the withering Minor World Tree.

“Everyone thought I was mad, in the middle of the sea. That there’s the most beautiful tree in the most dangerous part of the sea, believing such a king. But after several days and nights of sailing, I found it. No, in the middle of the sea, this beautiful Minor World Tree stood tall. I brought it here that day and have spent the time together ever since. It has aged with me.”

One could tell from his voice how precious the Minor World Tree was to Ben.

“Initially, I only brought the Minor World Tree and planted it here, but just its presence allowed other small trees, grass, and petals to grow around, yet as time passed, the Minor World Tree withered them all, and even itself turned into this state.”

The Minor World Tree, once a creator of nature, now withers everything around it.

‘Is this what they meant by it might cause disaster?’

When first seeing the Minor World Tree, there was such a notification.

[The Minor World Tree may cause a disaster.]

“I struggled to revive this Minor World Tree and found one way.”

“What might that be?”

“The Minor World Tree was in the sea, the opposite of where a forest belongs.”

Ben took out a water bottle and sprinkled it on the Minor World Tree.

Ssshh—

Then, the watered part quickly regenerated before withering again.

“Exactly, it needs water, not just sprinkling water on the Minor World Tree, but a lot of it.”

It needs water.

A seemingly simple problem.

Why not use magic to create water and sprinkle it?

But Ben answered this curiosity.

“Magic does not manifest permanently, and since the Minor World Tree is artifact material, it reacts more strongly to water made from artifacts.”

Ben started the most important conversation.

“I wish you could create an artifact that would prevent the Minor World Tree from withering for a few more years, not expecting it to fully recover.”

Then, Ben walked back towards the door.

“Soon, nobles and blacksmiths will swarm into the garden, you have the power to quickly create equipment, I hear.”

Meaning emergency creation.

“Many doubt the decision to entrust such a crucial task to a negotiator from another kingdom. You have something to prove to them and to me.”

With those words, Ben departed.

After he left, Hyun-soo realized that this was a test.

‘An artifact that can spout a lot of water…’

Hyun-soo thought of a sword.

‘A sword from which water spouts…’

Like a faucet, gushing out.

‘I think I understand why it hasn’t been revived until now.’

A garden the size of two playgrounds combined.

Revive the Minor World Tree with an artifact that acts like a faucet in this space?

That too would be impossible.

‘What about pouring a large amount of water at once?’

No, that would be impossible as well.

The tree seemed to revive when Ben sprinkled water on it but quickly withered again.

Then,

[Soon, a small calamity will begin.]

Startled by the sudden notification, Hyun-soo looked at the Minor World Tree with a puzzled expression.

‘What?’

It was then Hyun-soo realized.

The notification that a calamity might occur.

And the Minor World Tree, which had withered everything.

It wasn’t that a calamity had occurred.

The calamity (禍) was actually a different kind of fire (火).

[The small calamity begins to burn.]

Flames started to emerge from the base of the World Tree.

Whooosh—

[If the small fire is not extinguished within 3 minutes, the Minor World Tree will be completely destroyed.]

‘If the Minor World Tree is completely destroyed, the negotiation itself becomes meaningless.’

Watching the flames fiercely burning, Hyun-soo suddenly thought of something.

‘If spraying water won’t work, and creating water won’t work, maybe using that method…’

At that moment,

Boom—

A massive explosion from the Minor World Tree struck Hyun-soo.

Thrown backward, Hyun-soo heard unbelievable notifications.

[HP drops below 56%.]

[Suffering from severe burns is unbearable.]

[Afflicted with the status condition of dizziness.]

***

Outside, Ben spoke with the kingdom’s foremost blacksmith and the nobles.

First with the nobles.

“Your Majesty, the people are anxious. Although it is delicate to say, some are wondering if Your Majesty might be suffering from dementia.”

Ben hadn’t mentioned one thing.

It was about the secret of the Minor World Tree.

The Minor World Tree.

According to legend, if the Minor World Tree were fully revived, it could bear fruit that would yield bountiful crops.

“We know, don’t we? Someday, that tree will cause a great disaster.”

Yes, the Minor World Tree had been warning consistently.

“The people are saying that we should abandon the Minor World Tree.”

The blacksmiths said something similar.

“Your Majesty, it’s impossible to create an artifact that can save the Minor World Tree.”

Hundreds of blacksmiths had collaborated to create an artifact that could inject water into it.

But that too had always ended in failure.

That’s why Ben chuckled.

“After all, didn’t we agree to assign the negotiator an impossible task?”

“…Oh?”

“Ho?”

Now that they thought about it, that was true.

They had tasked him with something no one could achieve.

Of course, Ben had a small hope of reviving the Minor World Tree.

Then,

Boom—

Everyone was startled by a loud noise that shook the entire castle.

Ben reacted first.

He hurriedly opened the gate to the garden.

Whooosh—

A tremendous blaze erupted inside before dying down, and Ben entered.

“Ah…”

Ben saw the burning Minor World Tree.

His subjects had always said,

‘Your Majesty, we must abandon the Minor World Tree.’

‘The people are going mad! The public sentiment is more turbulent than when Your Majesty went to find the World Tree.’

The reason Ben couldn’t abandon the Minor World Tree was because even without him, the Minor World Tree could remain here.

Ben had aged alongside the World Tree.

He thought that even if he would eventually be forgotten, the Minor World Tree, which a once-young old man had acquired, would remain here.

To put it more directly—

The aged old man could not bring himself to abandon the Minor World Tree in the end.

‘It was my greed.’

Ben finally admitted.

Knowing that a disaster could occur, how foolish it was just to let it be.

And the officials and blacksmiths who had come in with him.

“Perhaps it’s for the best.”

The words spoken without understanding the king’s heart.

The flames intensified.

Ben couldn’t bring himself to step away. His strong physique allowed him to endure.

But the officials and blacksmiths stepped back as they saw the flames spread wildly.

“Your Majesty, we must leave.”

“Please, hurry!”

“……”

Yes, Ben envied Barad.

If they were Barad’s subordinates, they wouldn’t just talk; they would have blocked the way in front of him.

In fact, Ben didn’t have someone like Bella, who would stand by his side.

Nor did he receive the love of all his people or have many trustworthy loyalists.

All because of his peculiar personality.

Whoooosh—!

The flames became fiercer, engulfing the entire space.

[In 30 seconds, the Minor World Tree will be completely destroyed.]

The Minor World Tree was completely burning black. Ben turned around.

‘Farewell…’

Then, beyond the massive flames.

A figure shaking his head vigorously stood up.

Blacksmith Hyun.

He began walking towards the inside, parting the flames, with a mineral and a branch rising above his head.

Ben watched him.

It was strange.

The nobles and blacksmiths who told them to only trust themselves began to flee.

“It’s hot!”

“Run!”

“Call the soldiers!”

On the contrary, the negotiator from the enemy country walked towards him.

Hyun-soo, passing by him, reached his hand towards the sky, and the spear he created descended into his hand.

Ssshh—

Holding the spear with both hands.

Whooosh—

With the sound of an explosion, he thrust the spear into the midst of spreading flames.

Crack—!

At that moment.

Ben wore a puzzled expression.

The explosion was about to engulf Hyun-soo and himself.

But now, he found himself momentarily unable to breathe, clutching his throat before letting go.

He silently continued to look around.

Where is this?

He moves his hand.

Swoosh—

His hand moves slowly due to the filled water.

Soon, Hyun-soo’s voice brings back his thoughts.

“If sprinkling water won’t work, and creating water with a sword won’t work, then…”

Ben looked at Hyun-soo with shaky eyes, smiling slightly.

“Perhaps we should put the Minor World Tree into the sea?”

He finally realizes where he is.

Yes, the Deep Sea (心海).

Ben was inside the sea.

And notifications came to Hyun-soo.

[You have stopped the destruction of the Minor World Tree.]

Hyun-soo received several notifications.

[Negotiation skill increases by 4%.]

[Negotiation skill increases by 6%.]

These notifications kept coming.

And Ben, in the sea, watching the extinguished flames on the World Tree, asked.

“Why didn’t you run? You could have died.”

Hyun-soo was honest.

“After all, it’s not real death for me, and I judged that winning Your Majesty’s favor was more valuable, also…”

Ben understood why Barad cherished him.

“It’s a tree cherished by Your Majesty, isn’t it.”

And the end of the notifications Hyun-soo received was as follows.

[Intimacy with Ben increases.]

[Negotiation skill reaches 39%.]

And the old man smiled, unseen.

“Congratulations, Brother Hans.”

A bow from the white-haired head.

“Indeed, ordinary human beings could never beat demons.”

“Stop making such a fuss.”

A demeanor incomparably more polite than the one shown in front of the saintess.

I waved my hands dismissively amidst the endless praise of Oparn that flowed along.

“If it were as you say, my name would have been in first place.”

Yet, looking at the results, there were two names above mine.

Saint Rine, and Luciana.

Let’s set the saint aside.

With the cheat-like buff skills she possessed, and having Oparn among other male leads as allies, she was the strongest in terms of compatibility, capable of using golems as mere tutorial material.

But Luciana?

“Congratulations, Lady Luciana Speda. I never imagined you would defeat it alone without anyone’s help.”

Luciana, who represented everyone with the highest score in the entrance exam, boldly stepped onto the stage.

I was dumbfounded by the dean’s praise as he presented her with a commendation certificate.

‘Come on, make sense. How could she defeat it alone in that time?’

During gameplay, even when the best dealers were recruited for the challenge, the golem could not be taken down without the cooperation of at least three.

Thinking about it, the golem’s gimmick was not invincibility but damage reduction.

In theory, it’s possible.

Just nearly impossible.

‘It seems that sword is better than I thought.’

Of course, Luciana herself had grown enough to defeat the high demon Bathory, but the regret of not seeing my favorite’s majestic appearance was fleeting.

An achievement is an achievement, naturally drawing attention to that tool.

Faithful to the MacGuffin, the Speda family’s sword, whose performance remains undisclosed even in the status window.

‘Magic ignore? Or is it fixed damage? That would be a jackpot.’

“Brother?”

“Ah, sorry. I was lost in thought.”

“No, it seems you’re pondering over something you wish to entrust to me. Take your time.”

Given that he was presented as a commoner by the identity forged by the Thieves Guild, I was in a different dorm from Oparn.

Why did I call him to my room?

“Right. There are many things to ask through a letter, and since it’s confidential. Take this first.”

“This is…”

“Do you recognize it? It’s the trophy of the one who was after you.”

The hefty weight of Lexton’s horn settled in his hand.

A gleam sparked in Oparn’s red eyes upon seeing it.

‘It’s worth coveting.’

The horn of a high demon is a precious polishing material, and for Oparn, a blacksmith and jeweler, it would be filled with the desire to handle it himself.

-Rine, I didn’t know you were interested in this kind of thing. Good. I’ll do my best to make the best staff for you.

Moreover, the condition for raising affection was ‘giving an opportunity to handle materials’.

Just provide the materials, and he’d readily produce weapons for the female lead.

Truly an example of a generously giving male lead.

“Here, these are my daggers. Can you use one horn each to enhance them?”

“Of course. I will do my best to meet your expectations.”

The daggers, interwoven with black and gold.

And Oparn, receiving the neatly laid horns of Lexton, bowed his head.

‘I should be able to catch up somewhat with this.’

Who said cheat items were exclusively Luciana’s? I was the original purveyor of item reliance, and closing the gap with her through weaponry was simply a matter of course.

“However, it’s a bit regrettable. If there had been enough materials, I could have enhanced it to perfection.”

…What’s he talking about now?

“Materials? Wasn’t the horn enough?”

“Of course, this alone will be a deadly poison to the Levains, but given such a top-grade material, I can’t help but want more.”

He examined the horn from base to pointed end as he spoke.

“If it were combined with something that contained holy power, its effects could be greatly amplified.”

[Quest Initiated!]

[Demons have researched the most efficient ways to kill each other throughout their long internal conflicts.]

[A high demon’s horn imbuing the attribute of Pama, refined silver forged under starlight that brings burning pain…]

[Above all, the most supreme is the holy power only those with deep faith possess.]

[To enhance the perfect weapon, bring an item infused with holy power to the blacksmith.]

[Reward: ???]

[Penalty: ???]

I suppressed a sigh that rose to my throat at the sudden appearance of the system message.

“Oparn, do you know how relics are managed in this country?”

“I’m sorry, brother. I haven’t been in the human world long enough to know well…”

Oparn blinked his eyes innocently and responded.

Right, that’s why he said that.

An item with holy power? As if acquiring one was an easy task.

Under the strict control of the church, even holy water with a slight amount of holy power was difficult to obtain, let alone anything more significant.

“It’s regrettable, but enhance it with just the horn.”

“If it’s your request, brother… Understood. However, if the balance of power is off, the weapon could be damaged by the horn’s power.”

[Penalty: Increased chance of weapon destruction during enhancement]

The system window appeared promptly, narrowing my brows.

‘No wonder, things were blowing up left and right in the original game.’

[Argh! Who told me to spin the Lexton roulette? Come out!]

[My precious Garon’s greatsword turned to dust!!!]

[How could you fail that? I succeeded in enhancing both the protagonist and the allies’ weapons.]

[Did you not read the guide thoroughly? Didn’t you see it said there’s a chance of destruction, so only enhance the protagonist’s weapon?]

[You reap what you sow, right?]

[If only someone had told me sooner… Going back to spin the roulette…]

The ‘enhancement destruction probability’ that caused countless players’ screams in the community.

Though it never happened when enhancing the protagonist’s weapon, who was holy power incarnate, it solved the mystery of why allies’ weapons sometimes shattered during enhancement.

…Gritting my teeth. At this rate, the gap with Luciana might widen even further.

The weapons I’m using now are the Speda ancestral dagger and the mole’s jewel dagger.

Relics that are hard to come by, no matter where you look or how much money you throw at them.

I seemed to have unwittingly embraced the risk to its fullest.

‘Should I buy holy water in bulk now? Or should I hastily airlift some low-quality relics?’

But it was impossible.

No one knew my financial situation better than I did. After spending everything on information procurement and gifts related to Bathory, I was left penniless, courtesy of Wolbaek.

With the funds I had, acquiring even a modest relic, let alone holy water, was out of reach.

…No, what am I thinking? ‘Buying’ with money?

An object imbued with holy power. Upon reflection, it wasn’t that I lacked options.

“Understood. Just give me a moment. I’ll procure it shortly.”

“Of course! If anyone can adapt perfectly to the human world, it’s you, brother. I had faith.”

Avoiding the daunting gaze of trust, I shifted my eyes away.

“Alright, let’s conclude the weapon enhancement matter with this. The next request might be a bit challenging.”

“Leave it to me!”

A bitter smile crept up at the sight of him thumping his chest confidently.

‘Well, I’m sure you’ll manage.’

Despite hiding his demon identity and being an anonymous commoner, wasn’t he the ‘Mercenary King’ Oparn, who had risen to a position comparable to the other male leads?

[Do you think I am of no help? To bow and live submissively, how can one be called a mercenary? If you’ve taken the money, stand up proudly! Earn your gold with blood! That is our right and duty as mercenaries!]

Facing the impending war against demons, Oparn rallied mercenaries with his speech, seizing control of the mercenary industry. I watched that speech countless times through the screen, confident he would exceed my expectations.

With that anticipation, I entrusted Oparn with a mission only he could undertake.

***

Jearne Dormitory.

A space at the academy reserved for commoners.

Returning to his room, Oparn closed the door and let out a deep sigh.

‘Can I truly fulfill what brother has asked of me?’

He slowly reviewed the conversation they had in his room.

“Rank 8. Among the commoners, you achieved the highest score.”

“That’s too kind of you.”

“It’s not kindness. It’s reality.”

The cold, blade-like dark pupils peered out through half-closed eyes.

A high demon, no, a charisma befitting a being far superior, made Oparn inadvertently tremble.

“That means, among mercenaries and adventurers, your influence is not to be underestimated.”

“……”

“You’ve understood by now, haven’t you?”

A chilling hand landed on his shoulder.

“Take control of the Jearne Dormitory.”

His lips curled up in a grin.

“A small society of humans led by a demon at the helm. Doesn’t the thought alone thrill you?”

Whether it stemmed from the pure pleasure of a doppelganger or a nature inclined to dominate others,

“Let’s stand at the pinnacle of humans, you among the commoners, and I among the nobles.”

“My dull mind struggles to grasp this. What benefits do we gain from this?”

Why would brother want to dominate not just the nobility but also the commoners?

Oparn was puzzled.

But was it a foolish question?

He tilted his head slightly.

“Hmm. Before long, the Demon King will aim even for human territories. Isn’t it better to have a sword for your revenge and as many forces under you as possible?”

It was as brother said.

Though he was of the ruby rank, now he had no gargoyles by his side.

No trusted friends, comrades, or subordinates.

‘Like brother, I must build a new force.’

Among the nobles of the West.

The core personnel of the northern ducal houses. A symbol of lesser nobility. The name Hans Byron was already solidifying its influence, carrying numerous tags with it. Oparn’s eyes gleamed with determination. Rising from his seat, the young man bowed respectfully, expressing his gratitude. “Thank you for the advice. As expected of you, brother.”

“Ah, and keep a close watch on the saintess, be wary of her every move.”

What did he mean by that?

“Didn’t you advise me to get close to her just a while ago?”

“Teach you one thing and you only follow that… Keep that as it is.”

With a click of his tongue, he continued in a low voice, a brief feeling of guilt for possibly upsetting his brother’s mood passing quickly. Soon, Oparn blinked in surprise at the precious advice that followed.

“Don’t forget that the saintess is also a commoner. The size of her influence is limited. There’s no need to share that pie, is there?”

So, maintain a personal, close relationship, but don’t concede the leadership position of your forces.

“I understand perfectly. However, I’m not sure if that’s possible. In the end, won’t there be a conflict?”

“It’s the same as in Evildon. You’re a Ruby rank, so you know, right? Even among nobles, they laugh and smile to each other’s faces but hold knives behind their backs.”

Indeed. Brother’s insight was something he couldn’t easily comprehend on his own. But,

“I wonder if I can do well.”

“You’re allowed to doubt. Otherwise, Diamond wouldn’t have entrusted you with that seal.”

A pat on the shoulder reinvigorated him, as if to say, ‘Cheer up.’

“If you can’t trust yourself, trust in the eyes of Diamond. Ah, and though I may be lacking, trust in my judgment as well.”

Reinvigorated by his encouragement, Oparn clenched his fist tightly.

“Understood, brother.”

His goal was to become a leader admired by all residents of the Jearne Dormitory. Determination filled Oparn’s eyes, which sparkled with a blue hue, resonating with the seal that also emitted a faint light.

***

“Alright, that’s one thing taken care of.”

Even if they are currently undervalued, simply having their names listed at the academy signifies their talent.

It wouldn’t do to leave these ‘talents’ who managed to break through the narrow path to admission lying in the dirt.

I might not be able to meddle with the commoner’s side without any connection, but since I’ve entrusted it to Oparn adequately, he, being a male lead, will handle it well on his own.

Now, onto the second matter.

I took out the familiar communication crystal.

“Ah, can you hear me?”

-What’s this, a joke?

The sharp voice that immediately responded through the crystal pricked my ears.

“Why so sensitive? Ah, of course! With a rank of A class 21st place, the lowest score, and Lady Elizabeth being the farthest away from Luciana, it’s understandable.”

Ah, the envy and jealousy palpable in a moment of silence! Imagining her seething form vividly, I struggled to suppress my snickers.

“Well, at least be thankful you’re in the same class. Originally, it’s a privilege only for the top four teams. I heard the dean raised it specially after seeing you struggle alone.”

-Ugh… If you’re going to mock me, just hang up already, you jerk!

“To resort to such coarse language, abandoning all decorum. That’s not very ladylike of you. You haven’t forgotten about the wish grant, have you?”

The wish grant. At that word, a shallow sigh flowed through the crystal.

-…So you’re contacting me because of that, huh. Get to the point.

“Hehe. Still, taking responsibility for the words you’ve uttered is befitting of an heir to an earldom. Whether it’s ladylike is another matter entirely.”

-Hey!

“Let’s meet in my room, then. That’s all for now.”

Okay, an experienced assistant secured.

“It’s time for the auction house combo to reunite.”

A relic? If there isn’t one, just steal it.

“It’s been a while since I’ve used this.”

I pulled out a golden mask that had been lying dormant within the depths of my trunk.

The Phantom Thief Frost Mane.

It was time for a debut at the academy.

[The Boss]

[Educational Golem]

It’s been a long time since I’ve encountered this fellow. As the first boss players encounter in the game, it wasn’t too difficult to defeat in the game. However,

“No, what’s this?! Why isn’t my attack working?”

“Aaargh!”

“You idiot! What are you going to do if you step out there?”

That’s a story about the male leads, who are top talents in their field, and the tutorial that kindly teaches the strategy step by step. The creaking sounds can already be heard from here and there. Among them were major characters such as dukes and counts that I had glimpsed in documents from Wolbaek.

“Can we really do this?”

One of our mercenaries on our side seemed to be quite scared already.

And it wasn’t just him. Although the other mercenaries were keeping quiet, their expressions were full of negativity.

I was a bit puzzled. ‘How did these guys even get into the academy?’

They must be promising mercenary candidates. At the very least, if they get paid, they should do it. Isn’t that the rule of adventurers and mercenaries?

“Morale is low. What a state to be in before a fight.”

Only one person. Georg, mumbling in disappointment, was the only one fired up with fighting spirit.

Right. That’s how a mercenary who’s been paid should be.

“That’s a great attitude. If we’re going to face it anyway, it’s better to be positively charged rather than deflated.”

“So, employer, what will you do?”

I had already grabbed Georg, who seemed ready to burst forward with his breastplate jutting out.

Having enthusiasm is good, but one must know the strategy before diving in.

“Just wait a moment. There’s no point in rushing in alone against this opponent.”

“…What do you mean?”

“Do you know why even the renowned nobles over there are hesitating?”

Pointing towards the scene of chaos, everyone turned their gaze in that direction. There was-

“Why isn’t the magic working?!”

Screaming at the top of her lungs, a pink-haired lady had thrown all decorum aside.

“Sir Hyran? Why did you let the golem approach the mage?”

“…Well, if you had activated the trap in time, Lady Frontal wouldn’t have been exposed to danger, would she?”

Ah. It was a very familiar atmosphere.

– Can’t dodge a single platform pattern, tsk. Are your eyes not working?

– Done talking? You wouldn’t know since you only heal and don’t move. A dealer has to dodge patterns and deal damage, it’s enough to make your head explode!

– XX! It’s just a mess!

Every worthy young man of Daehan must have stumbled into a valley or a dark cave at least once or twice in their life.

Just before the raid team collapses. The chaos of the scene, stained with blame and swearing, felt as if it came from the engagement party of a fiancée far away.

“If we’re comparing tastes, it’s like the taste of my mother’s cooking back in my hometown.”

“?”

Ah, I got absorbed in it without realizing.

“Ahem. As you can see, simply charging in will get us defeated one by one. We need a good strategy.”

Don’t worry.

Even if you are frightened and your hands holding weapons are shrinking, we have experts here!

“Strategy?”

“Yes. Have you thought about why they start with a party-based grade test, even though more than half of the freshmen are meeting for the first time?”

The reason Elizabeth, who ranks among the top five in the North, is struggling, lies in the special gimmick of that golem.

“Do you see the magic circle on the chest of that golem?”

“…I can see it. However, I’m not knowledgeable enough about magic to understand its effect.”

That can’t be helped. In fact, that magic circle was created specifically for this entrance ceremony.

-Magic circle, you say? Let me see… Hmm. The more attacks it absorbs, the more damage it absorbs. That’s highly inefficient.

As Bathory explained, the more you attack it, the less effective your attacks become. However, that was not the end.

[Tutorial Boss, ‘Educational Golem’ requires everyone’s cooperation.]

[All party members have made successful attacks.]

[Now, it’s your turn.]

The system message from the tutorial vividly came to mind. That means,

“This golem is engraved with a conditional damage absorption magic circle. If one person inflicts more than a certain amount of damage, its efficiency dramatically decreases. In other words, all of you need to participate in the attack to some extent.”

For parties like Elizabeth’s or the noble students, who might be physically fit but have never experienced real combat, this was definitely not an easy test.

“Eek, to that golem? It seems like even a sword wouldn’t do any damage…”

However, as the law goes, if five people gather, one is bound to be a fool. Among those who have experienced real combat, there are always gaps.

I approached Mr. Glasses from the South, who was still sounding hesitant.

I don’t know what kind of monsters he has faced until now, but hesitating like this won’t do.

“I’m not speaking as a fellow student but as an employer who has paid you. Don’t forget that you’re supposed to follow orders.”

Fortunately, perhaps the threat from a noble closer to him was scarier than the distant golem, as he nodded vigorously with a pale face.

“There’s nothing difficult about it. You just have to follow what I do.”

Slowly, we headed towards our target, the Dean’s golem.

“It’s dangerous!”

“Haha, dangerous? That’s a funny joke. Now, listen carefully.”

What’s needed is to draw out the courage to face the golem from these foolish mercenaries. The golem might look intimidating, but as expected of a tutorial boss, its movements were excessively slow. Even Elizabeth, whose physical abilities aren’t considered outstanding, could see and avoid it.

Naturally, it wouldn’t be able to reach me, or the freshmen.

Even if it lifts its greatsword as tall as me with its giant arm, what use is it if it doesn’t hit?

However, to those who are scared right now, such things wouldn’t be visible.

“Don’t get scared just by its size. Now, pay attention. It just lifted its right arm, right? That means you just need to get closer.”

As my words ended and I dove towards the golem, a cool sound of a greatsword scraping the ground hit my ears from behind.

“But simply dodging isn’t enough. If we only dodge, we can’t defeat it, can we? Plus, if the attack shifts to another person, that’s a nuisance as well.”

In other words, aggro might be drawn to someone else. To prevent that, we need to keep accumulating damage.

With a clang, my dagger, swung horizontally, deflected the golem’s greatsword, creating an opening.

As the attack was clearly visible, deflecting it wasn’t too difficult. It was slightly heavy, but that was all. If the rhythm and angle were matched well, it was manageable.

“Did you see? Up close, the precursor actions are shorter, but the power is weaker, so you can deflect it easily. Like this!”

Raven claw clawed through the gap in the golem’s armor plating, tearing through its skeleton. The golem staggered momentarily, having been damaged in its skeleton. My role in dealing damage, my share, was done.

“How about it, really easy, right? Just do this and dodge, and you’re doing your part.”

“Could it really be…”

“Hm?”

I turned around and tilted my head. I understood the mercenaries making a fuss, but why did Georg look like that too? They were quite a handful.

“Well, it can’t be helped. Let’s show it again.”

But if it doesn’t work, just repeat until it does. A timeless truth I learned from Yegor, excluding brewing tea, of course.

Thump, thump.

“Why, why are you bringing that golem over here?!”

Georg’s tone was unusually panicked. But it couldn’t be helped. Physically and mentally superior to the others, wouldn’t it be best for you to be the test subject… no, the example, and teach them directly?

“Come on, lift your greatsword. Just follow me.”

“Wait, wait a minute! I’m not ready yet…!”

His protest was cut off in front of the golem, which raised its right arm.

“I said earlier! Let’s dive in! One, two, three, now!”

“Damn it! Such a reckless employer!”

A reluctant voice came from behind his helmet.

***

“Indeed, this year’s freshmen might well be called the golden cohort.”

On the desk in the dean’s office, a situation in the hall was being shown through a brilliant light emanating from a magical stone.

The dean could see it. Just like this magical stone, these yet unpolished gems held a brilliant glow within them.

“I will bestow a blessing upon you. Everyone, to your positions.”

A candidate to stand against the destruction of the world. The saintess from Saleranto, with a dignity, beauty, and charisma fitting her position, showed wisdom beyond that of a commoner. Truly, as if chosen by a god.

“Luciana! Can’t you hear me?! Retreat!”

“I’m sorry, Your Highness, but please stay safe. I can handle this myself. In matters of combat, please follow my judgment.”

And Luciana Speda, already renowned before enrollment. A treasure from the North, engaging the golem with pure skill, undeterred by the magic circle’s damage mitigation.

Among the many talented individuals, one student stood out in particular.

“Come on, the mercenary from the North did it. You’re not planning to just lose to a country bumpkin, are you? Let’s show them the prestige of the Central region!”

“That doesn’t matter at all! It’s the nobles who care about such things, not mercenaries! How can… Aaah!”

“Good. Just follow me.”

Leading ordinary mercenaries while holding the baton, a man methodically takes down the golem.

“Was his name… Hans Byron?”

The dean’s gaze shifted back and forth between the image shown in the crystal ball and the enrollment documents.

“Byron, a baronial family… I haven’t heard of the family, but it makes sense if he’s a martial arts tournament champion.”

It was a rare sight to see someone who wasn’t a high noble standing out.

“Hmm. I’d like to test him a bit more.”

After some deliberation, he manipulated the golems targeting the three parties he was most interested in.

If they are truly seeds of greatness, their sprouts will be different. This level of trial should be well within their capacity to endure.

“Now, only the finish is left!”

Following Georg, even the last, most frightened mercenary from the south completed their part. Although those who had already finished their share were sprawled out behind.

As long as the golem hadn’t fallen yet, I urged the mercenary to stay tense.

-You have a talent for pushing people, don’t you?

“Ha ha… there, when I give the signal, thrust with your spear! …Now!”

Of course, staying close and instructing was quite exhausting for me too. But the results were clear.

Boom!

“…Impressive.”

The way Georg and all the mercenaries looked at me changed. They no longer saw me just as an employer, but as a distinguished warrior.

“Have I laid the foundation for a reputation with this?”

-The envy of others must feel pleasant. What does it taste like?

“Sweet. So sweet it might rot my teeth,” I whispered to Bathory, ensuring only she could hear, as I approached the fallen golem. Now, only destroying the core, which had been exposed after all the armor plates were torn off, was left.

But then,

[Beep-. Command executed.]

[Switching to advanced education mode.]

It was at that moment. The golem’s blue eye turned red, accompanied by a monochromatic voice.

-Hisss!

Dropping its greatsword, the golem extended its steel fists alone.

“Ugh. That was close.”

A few strands of hair from my forehead were cut off and scattered into the air. Was this what they call perceived speed? The attacks, which were yawningly slow before, had suddenly sped up, and I was a step behind in adapting.

Thump, Thoom!

The golem, having promptly gotten up from the ground, resumed its stance.

“Damn, I’m completely drained from helping the mercenaries, and now there’s advanced training out of nowhere?”

The mana and stamina meticulously calculated for a strong first impression were nearly depleted, and a new crisis emerged.

Bathory, noticing my weary state from my labored breathing, asked with concern,

-You seem quite tired. Need help?

“That won’t do. Most of them are still unaware of Lady Bathory’s existence, and unnecessary confusion is the last thing we need.”

While stepping back, the sight of mercenaries frozen in fear under the golem’s menacing aura caught my eye.

“Did it get an upgrade all of a sudden? Its movements have changed.”

Only one person stood by my side. It was Georg.

“It’s good timing. Could you help me out?”

“I’ve got to earn my keep. Just say the word.”

“I’m a bit exhausted. I’m aiming for a quick decisive battle.”

Dragging this out could lead to real trouble.

I whispered, expelling the sweet taste filling my mouth, “I’ll counterattack the moment it attacks again. Aim for the core in that moment.”

Without waiting for a response, I dashed towards the golem. Georg, a true mercenary, would naturally follow.

‘After all, I have neither strength nor mana left.’

All that remained was to throw myself into the fray.

Clang!

Lacking strength, my wrist twisted, and the Raven claw flew far away.

[Target neutralization, initiating suppression.]

Seizing the moment, the golem launched another punch at me.

-Frost Mane! Why won’t you dodge?

With Bathory’s shock, a heavy punch landed.

[Stone Skin (Rank: S) is activated!]

-Huh?!

For the first time since the ceremony began, the blow that hit me was immediately redirected in an unexpected direction along my arm.

‘I thought its performance was inferior compared to what gargoyles possess… Surprisingly useful?’

To deflect an attack like that, breaking the opponent’s stance, was far more effective than merely entering an invincible state.

“Georg, now!”

Following my command, a streak of blackness darted towards the golem. He used my shoulder to jump, leveraging the fall to strike down.

Clang!

As glass shattered, I too collapsed.

Thump!

Simultaneously, the golem’s massive body entrusted itself to the hall floor. Glancing at Elizabeth’s party, unsurprisingly, a countess wrapped in shock and fury was looking this way.

‘So, my WIN.’

Character by character. The taste of provocation!

‘I could get addicted to this.’

How far would our Lady Elizabeth go to fulfill a wish-granting right? I was truly looking forward to it.

-Such an arrogant servant…! My fate is intertwined with yours…

Ah, but first, I had to soothe the contract holder who was quite upset. The prickling at my feet was already sending shivers through my body.
