Act 52

Prev I TOC I Next

After wiping off the sweat from training, I turned to Herand.

“It’s been a while since we’ve seen each other in the imperial palace, Brother Herand. Do you have any business here?”

“I, I was just on my way back from the secretary’s office, on the orders of Lord Orren.”

Orren.

At the mention of that name, I looked intently at Herand.

The former head of the Crypart family and the chairman of the Council of Nobles.

He disliked Julian to the extent that ‘loathe’ would be an appropriate word.

It’s understandable.

Orren, a pureblood advocate, despite being a collateral relative, detested that Julian, who had become a dog of the imperial household by joining ‘The Closed Eyes,’ had a reputation higher than that of the four major families.

If infamy counts as a form of fame, that is.

‘Orren going to the secretary’s office… What could it be about?’

I couldn’t help but become curious.

“Do, don’t worry. It wasn’t anything related to you.”

Perhaps sensing my thoughts, Herand waved his hands and spoke, his face dripping with cold sweat but not showing signs of lying.

“But, Julian.”

“Yes, brother.”

“It’s about… Milena’s belongings.”

Milena’s belongings?

Ah, he must be talking about the ‘Soulstone Necklace’ I had obtained and entrusted to Herand.

“Is it really alright for me to have it? It’s a special item to you, isn’t it?”

Herand, stroking his beard, spoke with an awkward expression.

It seemed like he wanted to return it immediately, fearing I might harm him using that as a pretext.

But I couldn’t take it back.

If the Dawn Society found out that I had secretly acquired the ‘Soulstone,’ they wouldn’t leave me be, especially since I don’t have a secure place to store it.

“Please keep it a little longer. Once the work I’m doing is settled, I will come to retrieve it myself.”

“Is… is that so?”

At my words about settling the work, Herand shivered.

It’s hard to grasp what he’s thinking.

“Then, I’ll be going first, brother. I heard there’s a family meeting, please send my regards to the head.”

Deciding there was nothing more to discuss, I turned to leave.

Testing the ‘spear’ at the training ground made me realize that this body is not only talented with the ‘sword’ but also with other weapons.

This spurred an eagerness to try out other weapons.

“Ho, how about coming to the family meeting with me, Julian?”

Caught off guard by Herand’s sudden suggestion, I turned back to look at him.

Our eyes met, and a shade of ‘fear’ flickered above his head.

“Yo, you’re a member of the Crypart family, aren’t you?”

“I am a collateral relative, brother. The ‘Forsaken’ label was what you guys attached, wasn’t it?”

I thought the Julian I knew would have smoothly laughed it off.

But the emotion boiling inside me… What is it? Anger?

“Ye, yes, I know you detest the Crypart family immensely.”

That emotion naturally flowed out of my body.

Julian’s bitter anger, though it was difficult for Herand to receive, he continued speaking.

“The environment, the treatment… it must have been the worst for you. Even Milena’s funeral was poorly conducted, and they even forbade young you from attending because they didn’t want to hear you cry.”

Though I had no memory of it, the mention of ‘Milena’ once again caused a dull ache in some corner of my heart.

But it wasn’t enough to significantly disrupt the conversation. The simmering anger just slightly subsided.

“I’m not saying to forget about the past. Just…”

“Brother, I appreciate your words, but I have no intention of attending the family meeting.”

I cut off his following words and firmly stated my stance.

“Is that so…”

“Yes.”

I nodded calmly to him, his voice trailing off.

Truthfully, I understand rationally that there’s nothing good about making an enemy of a family like ‘Crypart.’

However, Julian, or rather his instincts, unlike the rational ‘me,’ could not accept reconciliation with the already estranged ‘Crypart’ family.

‘It’s not just that.’

My reluctance to step into unnecessary matters was greater.

Surely, the high-and-mighty direct descendants of the Crypart family would expect my unconditional obedience.

“If you say so, then I won’t speak further.”

Herand touched his beard once, his expression revealing his troubled heart.

This fearful ‘third son of the Crypart family,’ unlike the spiteful other family members, seems quite kind-hearted.

That’s probably why, despite being from the Crypart family, I didn’t feel a particular aversion to him.

“Regarding Milena… I truly am sorry. I know this apology might not mean much to you, but I still wanted to say it…”

“It’s okay. It’s an old memory.”

Not that I’ve actually experienced it, but…

“But, are you sure it’s okay? Joshua will also be attending this family meeting. The youngest who recently got a beating from you.”

Ah, so that was why he wanted me to attend the family meeting.

Joshua Crypart.

In the storyline of the game, this character, deeply loved and supported by the current head and the Council’s chairman Orren, was set to succeed and eventually be talked about as the ‘next head’ due to his success both within and outside the family.

“As Joshua will be attending the family meeting for the first time, it’s natural for the elder and many vassals to focus their attention on him. Surely, because of the previous incident, they might ask you for a punishment…”

“Don’t worry about that, brother.”

I smiled at his concern.

I’m not sure how that smile looked, but seeing Herand sweating coldly, it must not have been very reassuring.

“Joshua and I had the opportunity to strengthen our bond recently.”

***

“Damn! That guy…”

Joshua, who had stopped by the meeting hall for the family meeting, cursed with a deeply furrowed face.

Fidgeting with the tie of his formal attire, showing his discomfort, he then shifted his gaze to the clock on the wall.

‘The meeting is about to start.’

It was his first time attending the family meeting, but he would not have been this nervous if he had been his usual self. With a confidence as high as his proud nose, the emotion of ‘nervousness’ was an alien concept to Joshua.

‘Let’s start the negotiation, Joshua. This matter is far too significant to be dismissed or forgotten.’

However, things were different now. On the day Julian’s mansion was attacked. Because of the ‘negotiation’ they had, Joshua bit his lip hard.

‘First, the identity of Alphas Mayfield will be transferred to the Closed Eyes. And the damages caused by this incident should be fully covered by Joshua.’

Up to this point, the content of their ‘negotiation’ was acceptable. But what followed was enough to perplex Joshua.

‘In the upcoming family meeting, I would like you to support me as the head of the family.’

Due to Julian’s actions, the noble elders and the ‘Crypart’ family had been grinding their teeth at him. Moreover, hadn’t there been a ‘warning’ through the secretary’s office recently?

The ‘Crypart’ family, whose pride was hurt by an unprecedented event, was searching for a reason to send him back to the northern front. The incident at the banquet hall was perfectly suited for this purpose. After all, a ‘sideline’ had tarnished the honor of a ‘direct line’ member in an official setting.

‘Was it a mistake to step in… Swayed by foolish emotions…!’

The humiliating incident at the banquet hall, and the impulsive decision to raid his mansion at night, turned out to be a self-defeating move for Joshua. It was an opportunity he had kicked away himself to exile Julian.

“Lord Joshua, Lord Herand has arrived at the meeting hall. The meeting will start soon, please come inside.” Lost in thought, Joshua was startled by the servant’s voice and looked up.

Then, he nodded and began to move his feet. As he approached the venue of the meeting, Joshua’s steps grew heavier.

‘Damn it.’

However, shaking off his feelings, Joshua opened the door and entered. The eyes of the retainers were fixed on him.

“You’ve arrived, Joshua.” Among them, the emotionless gaze of the current head of the Crypart family, and Joshua’s father, ‘Oben Crypart’, turned to him. Joshua gave a light bow and sat in his seat.

Looking around, Joshua saw familiar faces of the retainers. The first thing he noticed was Herand, who was sweating profusely, followed by the relatively calm expression of the butler, Lahart.

“Let’s start the meeting.” With the words of the head, Oben, the family meeting began. The first topic discussed was the actions of ‘Sword Saint’ Hayden Reich.

“Everyone knows that the Sword Saint has deep connections with the Second Prince. If the Sword Saint supports the Second Prince, the succession to the throne will lean towards him.”

“However, we cannot overlook the Third Prince, Kaldrek, who has shown valor on the northern front. Most of the military supports him…”

“The Fourth Princess, supported by the Magic Tower, cannot be ignored either.”

“However, everyone knows that her influence cannot compare to that of the Sword Saint. The only person who can match his honor and fame is…” The speaker trailed off, as only one person came to mind, whose notoriety was even greater.

“But it is presumed that Julian has no great interest in the throne succession.”

“It’s better that way. If Julian shows interest, it could further complicate the current situation.”

“What do you think, Joshua?” In the midst of the discussion, Oben’s sudden interjection quieted the meeting room, and all eyes turned to Joshua. “Since it’s your first time participating in a family meeting, I understand you might be nervous. So, please, calmly state your opinion.”

“Yes, I understand.” Joshua politely responded to Oben’s words and slowly stood up. He could openly express his antipathy towards Julian here, but that would be problematic.

‘Don’t be foolish. If this situation is reported to the Closed Eyes and the secretariat, an investigation will begin.’

The leverage in the negotiation was on Julian’s side.

 ‘Then…’

“Good day, I am Joshua Crypart.” The sight of Joshua greeting the retainers around him brought pleased expressions to most of their faces.

“How about officially recognizing brother Julian as a member of our family now?” Those expressions were fleeting. Shocked by Joshua’s words, the initial surprise soon gave way to anger from most of them.

“What…?”

“Are you actually saying that now?”

“If we recognize that villain, the name of Crypart itself will be tarnished!”

Joshua decided to take a strong stance. Because of his promise with Julian, he couldn’t directly say that Julian should be sent to the northern front. Thus, Joshua decided to antagonize him in a different way. Let them react. React even more.

“However, isn’t brother Julian’s reputation on par with that ‘Sword Saint’? Therefore, I believe…”

Joshua watched the retainers’ voices rise, twisting his lips.

“That brother Julian is the right person to be the next head of the family.”

‘I will support you as you wished. Argue strongly to the point where you have no choice but to feel antagonized.’

“The next head…!?”

“Are you really saying that now!?”

“No matter how young, that statement is hard to accept, Joshua!”

As Joshua expected, the retainers’ backlash was intense. Because of this, some members stood up from their seats and raised their voices.

“Indeed, Joshua is still young, easily influenced by rumors at such an age.”

“It’s absurd that the source of these rumors still remains within our capital.”

“I agree. Sending him to the northern front right away is in the best interest of both our family and the royal court…”

‘Yes, that’s exactly it.’

Joshua smirked inwardly at the sight of people fuming in anger.

‘What happened today can be glossed over after we’ve sent him away.’

It was thought to be a card to be used and discarded. It wasn’t meant sincerely. ‘Then, there wouldn’t be anyone to seriously challenge it.’

As the discussion gradually shifted back to the idea of sending Julian to the northern front again, “But… I think Joshua’s words have merit,” Herand interjected.

Startled, Joshua slowly turned his head to look at Herand.

“Brother Herand?”

‘Wasn’t Herand also afraid and disliked Julian? What are you saying, brother?’

“Even though Joshua used to dislike Julian so much, it seems his assessment has changed. Recently… his actions seem different from before, almost as if they’re showing his humanity. Isn’t that proof?”

No. Absolutely not, Brother Herand! Joshua wanted to object to Herand’s sudden statement, but he couldn’t. Knowing that if he changed his stance now, after having defended Julian just moments ago, he would be seen as someone without principles,

“Indeed, considering the current political climate of the royal court, Julian’s influence cannot be ignored.”

“Correct, although it’s infamous, it’s still a form of renown.”

As if waiting for this moment, starting with Herand, those retainers who had less animosity towards Julian, especially those who had risen to their positions purely based on their talents, began to raise their voices.

‘Have I become the starting point for this…?’ Joshua glanced at Herand and thought, ‘Damn it…!’

Round 5

Prev | TOC | Next

Honestly, I had taken it for granted.

Watching Mark2 farm, one could easily mistake Slimes for farming monsters.

“Poison?”

Could it be that the abilities generated during synthesis are random?

But if we cool down and think about it, randomness might be better.

If the Slime’s ability were limited to farming, our options would be restricted, but with such diverse abilities available, they could be utilized in many ways.

Squish-

Of course, seeing its slow, squirming form, one might think it’s far from being ready for hunting with just a poison ability.

[Poison LV.1]

[Emits a toxin that poisons the opponent.]

[The poisoned opponent will be paralyzed after at least 10 minutes.]

It was as expected.

Even though it’s a paralyzing poison, it takes 10 minutes for the effect to appear…

‘If I must use it, there’s a way, but I don’t know how strong the paralysis is.’

Let’s think positively just for seeing the potential. Who knows, maybe the poison level might increase later and become truly powerful.

“You are Poispois.”

Squish?

“From now on, your name is Poispois.”

Squish!

I was reaching a point where I could understand the gestures of the Slime. Could this be the influence of the Slime Lord ability?

“Poispois, how do you use the poison? Do you spit it out, or is it a fluid that comes out of your body?”

Squirm-

Bloop-

Suddenly, something like a mouth appeared on Poispois and it spat something out.

“Oh, so you spit it out?”

Squirm-

“No?”

Squish squish!

“You can do both?”

Squish!

I was amazed that we could somewhat communicate.

After watching Poispois’s poison show for a while, I realized it was time.

“Hold on. I’ll make a friend for you first.”

Just then, the cooldown ended and I used the Slime Lord ability to summon a level 1 slime.

Pop?!

A familiar-looking slime popped out, squirming as if asking where it was.

Poispois approached and squirmed towards the newcomer.

Squish- Squish-

Squirm?

While they engaged in what seemed like a high-level conversation, Mark2 came back to me from the garden.

Squirm!

“Hmm? Is it already time to harvest?”

Squish!

Mark2, urging me forward, led the way, and sure enough, stopped at a plot where carrots were planted.

“Oh!”

The leaves were unusually large.

Though the carrots were hidden in the soil, the peeking orange bodies were clearly larger than the sizes I was used to.

Gulp.

Was it because it was our first cultivation and harvest?

Or because of the unusual size?

Feeling oddly tense, I stared at the carrots as Mark2, oblivious, pulled one out.

Pop!

“Wow!”

An uncontrollable admiration burst out once again.

A brilliantly shining, translucent orange carrot was fully revealed.

It was much bigger than expected, but not unrealistically so. It was more like, “Oh? There are carrots this size?”

“But the color…”

It wasn’t hyperbole or exaggeration.

It’s almost gem-like, translucent body shone like glass in the light.

“Is it even safe to eat?”

Just then, Mark2 brought over the carrot he had pulled, proudly showing it to me. As I cautiously took the carrot from Mark2, he made a fuss as if it needed to be handled with care.

Pop! Squish! Squirm!

“Alright, alright. I’ll be careful.”

It’s just an ingredient after all, but I wrapped it up preciously nonetheless.

[Magic-Infused Carrot LV.1]

[It contains a faint magical power.]

[Upon consumption, depending on the amount of mana you have, your vision will improve for 3 minutes, followed by a very slight permanent increase in vision.]

This is…

Am I seeing this correctly?

“A carrot getting an item classification…”

I couldn’t hide my astonishment at the item window that appeared in front of me. The display of an item window meant that this carrot had literally received an item classification.

Not everything from Earth and even items from dungeons get classified as items.

“Is it because it’s imbued with magic?”

In dungeons, some fruits and berries receive item classifications, and some do not.

Moreover, those that are classified as items are usually plants or berries that serve as excellent ingredients for powerful elixirs.

“Could it be that all the carrots planted here are items?”

I wasn’t hoping for that much, but the thought that it might be possible crossed my mind.

“Is it okay to harvest all of these now?”

Squish!

With Mark2’s approval, we began harvesting the carrots.

It was only a 100-pyeong garden, so there wasn’t a large amount, but since we had planted over 300 carrots, it took some time.

“Phew.”

While I dug up one, Mark2 dug up three.

I took my time being careful, but Mark2 expertly pulled them out without damaging any.

‘Mark2 is such a good worker.’

In many ways, I felt like my life was flourishing thanks to Mark2.

After the two of us had dug up just over 300 carrots, flowers started to bloom on the cherry tomatoes.

“Huh? Come to think of it, did you also handle the pollination?”

Squirm!

Managing all this garden by himself, and keeping up with the rapid growth was truly impressive.

Mark2, after harvesting the carrots, casually signaled that I should take over their management and went to tend to the tomatoes.

“He doesn’t look it, but he’s reliable.”

He might appear slow and a bit simple, but when it comes to work, he definitely gets it done.

Thanks to him, I suddenly found myself wondering how to manage all the harvested carrots.

“I had no idea we’d be harvesting this quickly.”

Who would have thought that what hadn’t sprouted in three years would be harvested in just two days?

“Poispois, and you, new friend. It’s time for you to work too.”

I called over the two who were still engaged in their high-level conversation, to help sort and move the carrots.

I told Poispois not to emit poison unless specifically commanded, just in case it might contaminate anything.

“Wow, all of these are items?”

I had my suspicions, but it turned out to be true.

There were a total of 309 carrots, and every single one was classified as an item.

Since they were also quite large, I set aside 10 for quest purposes and pondered what to do with the rest.

“Maybe I should try eating just one.”

Honestly, it felt a bit wasteful just to eat it. After all, three years and a great deal of resources were invested just for this.

“Ah, but now that I have Mark2, I can grow them anytime.”

I decided to trust myself and my slimes.

With that resolve, I was about to bite into a carrot but then hesitated.

Squish-

Mark2, who was tending to the tomatoes, stared blankly at me as I was about to eat the carrot.

“Why? What?”

Squish-

“Are you saying not to eat it?”

Squish-

Mark2 casually approached and picked up a carrot himself. It’s impressive how well he could hold it without hands.

“Do you want to eat too?”

Squirm!

“Of course! I can’t give you all, but, um… I’ll allow up to 10.”

At that moment, Poispois and the newbie each grabbed a carrot.

“…You two get five each.”

Squish!

The slimes, as if thanking me, ate their carrots before I did. I thought they didn’t need to eat, but apparently, that’s not the case.

“Hey, I’m the lord here and I haven’t even tasted it yet, and you guys go first?”

Crunch!

After making a joke, I finally bit into the carrot. As I chewed, the juice flowed out and wet my hands.

“Mmm!?”

Is this really a carrot?

Yes, it definitely was a carrot.

It had the texture of a carrot and the taste of a carrot.

However, the overflowing juice, the rich flavor of the carrot, and the characteristic sweetness were maximized, overwhelming my taste buds.

[Your vision will increase for 3 minutes.]

Along with a system window that delivered the final verdict that what I ate was indeed an item.

‘No, vision isn’t what’s important here!’

A heavenly vegetable.

I wanted to name it that.

This was a taste on a whole different level compared to ordinary carrots.

Crunch- Crunch-

The more I chewed, the sweeter it got.

But this sweetness wasn’t cloying or overbearing; it was more like the lingering taste of a scented coffee or tea.

I don’t drink alcohol, but it was akin to the luxurious aroma of expensive whiskey or wine lingering around the lips.

I had only taken one bite, but the aftertaste lasted long. The funny thing was, since it was larger than a typical carrot, there was still a lot of it left.

“…This is insane.”

This, clearly, could work.

It seemed possible not just to farm for quests, but to farm for success.

“Of course, I need to complete quests too. The more I develop my abilities, the higher the chances of successful farming.”

Ultimately, all this was possible thanks to my abilities.

I thought I could only use it for potions, a liquid synthesis with a cooldown of a day.

I only gave commands as the Slime Lord, who could summon just one slime per day. Each of them seemed lacking on their own, but together they created an incredible synergy.

Squirm!

Moreover, these remarkable creatures were cute too.

…Or is that just me seeing them that way?

“Huh?”

While I was lost in admiration, the slimes had finished all the carrots allocated to them.

The pace at which they ate was alarming; I would have been sweating bullets if I hadn’t set a limit.

“Wow, you guys eat more than I thought, huh?”

I tried to sound nonchalant, but an alarm was going off in my head.

‘What if slimes are actually creatures that need to eat a lot?’

It had only been two days.

That was the amount of time I had been interested in these monsters called slimes.

I still knew very little about slimes, only that they were harmless to humans.

“Do you die if you don’t eat?”

It seemed like a natural question for any living being, but I asked just in case. Then, Mark2 squirmed, trying to communicate something.

“If you die, move to the right; if not, to the left.”

Squish-

The slimes uniformly moved to the right.

“Ha, I asked something obvious, haha.”

I forced a laugh, but cold sweat began to trickle down my back.

“So, how much do you need to eat per day? Tell me in terms of the number of carrots.”

The slimes then began to lay out the carrots they needed.

I figured they might need about ten each, the amount they had just eaten.

But the number they laid out was beyond my expectations, and my face stiffened.

“…Don’t lie. What kind of slime eats that much?”

I snapped harshly, but it was unavoidable.

Mark2 kept moving carrots non-stop, and by my estimate, he was already past 30.

Poispois stopped at exactly 25.

The newbie had 12.

“Ma-Mark2?”

Squish?

Mark2 paused in moving the carrots and tilted as if asking why.

“You’re talking about daily food intake, right?”

Squish!

I was doomed.

The carrots we had just harvested wouldn’t even cover the slimes’ “wages.”

Of course, having harvested over 300 carrots in just two days meant it wasn’t a huge problem.

However, the joy of the first harvest had momentarily blinded me, sigh.

“40 each? Well, you do work a lot, so you must need to eat a lot.”

I decided not to be greedy.

After all, all this was possible thanks to the slimes, so naturally, they should be my top priority.

“So, that’s 77 carrots a day. Since they went without yesterday, that’s 154. But if we harvest the tomatoes tomorrow, they won’t starve.”

I did the calculations alone and then told the slimes.

“I’ll keep 10 for myself, and you guys figure out how to make the rest last. We can’t have our guys starving.”

Squish! Squirm!

The slimes danced joyously.

Seeing them hungrily gobble up the carrots made me realize I had been too thoughtless.

“I need to head out right away.”

I only went out once a month, but I had to go out again immediately.

I planned to request an analysis of the carrot components, get a ladder for going underground, and buy various seeds and seedlings.

I also intended to gather information on slimes and take samples of Mark2’s body fluid and Poispois’ poison for analysis.

“Should I check on the tomatoes before I go?”

Their growth was so rapid that it seemed like the tomatoes could be harvested soon. If so, I could finally make juice infused with magical fruit…

“Should I also plant He Shou Wu seeds?”

After three years, it was time to complete the quest.

Survival 71

Prev I TOC I Next

Gargoyle.

A race that occupies one of the three major demon clans, characterized by their durable skin.

“There was a reason Oparn was a tank even in the original work.”

Was it because of the recent attack?

I spoke in a voice only he could hear as he turned his head restlessly on the bed with anxious eyes.

“Don’t worry too much. No matter what, this is still the realm of humans. The Levains can only cause so much trouble; they have their limits.”

“…But if we get caught by humans, wouldn’t we also be in danger?”

Well, I’ll be safe.

I’m human, after all.

I tapped Oparn on the shoulder, who was worrying in such a demon-like manner.

“Nobody would think a demon would go as far as to cut off their horns to infiltrate. Not even other demons.”

Horns, for a demon, are a symbol and honor of their being, in addition to being an organ that stores extra mana.

In short, it’s madness.

And Oparn had done just that.

‘Ah, so that’s why Oparn’s magical power was always at rock bottom when I played?’

“I guarantee it, having lived here for decades. No one will think of you as a demon now.”

Of course.

Considering he even enrolled in the Academy, where key figures like the prince and the saintess are present.

Even possibly having a thing with the saintess?

If he hasn’t been caught there, he could live as a human forever.

“Looking around so anxiously makes you more suspicious. Instead, look forward boldly!”

“Are you giving advice as a senior?”

Suddenly emerging from the shadows and sitting cross-legged on a chair was Bathory.

She looked at Oparn with a cluck of her tongue.

“Common sense is far from the Frost Mane, so it’d be wise to heed my advice.”

“That’s rich coming from you, Bathory.”

The look on her face as she seemingly mocked me revealed a subtle pleasure at seeing the boy.

‘It’s understandable, encountering a fellow demon in a similar situation in a foreign land.’

However.

A demon plaintiff.

A vampire maid prisoner of war.

A gargoyle refugee in hiding.

Thinking about it again, it was indeed a strange combination.

“Then, let me reintroduce myself. I am currently using the name Hans Byron, known as Frost Mane. A Doppleganger noble.”

“I’m Bathory Erzsebet. I had lands in the Evildon Empire. Well, you, being holed up in the ground, might not have heard of it.”

Oparn’s lips were sealed in a straight line, unable to shed his wariness.

I sighed dramatically, showing my annoyance.

“Hmm. That’s disappointing. From the snowy fields to the recent attack, I’ve been quite the lifesaver, haven’t I? I was hoping for at least a word of thanks.”

“Oparn.”

He opened his mouth reluctantly under my pressing.

But that wasn’t the answer I was looking for.

“So, what is your position?”

“I hold a place among my kind, and Lady Bathory is a noble. You don’t seem like an ordinary gargoyle either.”

That made sense, given the pursuers.

An ordinary gargoyle?

Whether fleeing to the Manhett Empire or whatever, what did the Levains, who would have already taken over Evildon, care?

There had to be a reason they sent pursuers all the way to the Speda territory, risking danger.

“Huh? What are you looking at?”

Like Bathory, who could pose a threat to them.

“No, it’s just that Lady Bathory’s hair looks particularly radiant today, like sunshine.”

“You, have you eaten something strange today? Enough with the nonsense!”

A flush of warmth spread over her pale, almost ghostly white skin.

“Just kidding.”

Soon, a deep redness spread over her smooth skin.

But the current heat was soon replaced by embarrassment and anger.

Knowing well that she might pounce on me at any moment, I quickly backed off.

“Pfft.”

Was it because of our little farce?

For the first time, a smile appeared on his face, which had been stiff with tension.

It was a familiar sight of Oparn that I had come to know through the game.

“Ahem. My apologies. Are you two opposed to Tyrone?”

Perhaps embarrassed, he coughed into his fist repeatedly.

Well, you could say that.

A disaster that must be eradicated to prevent destruction.

For Luciana’s happy ending too, Demon King Tyrone was ultimately a barrier that had to be overcome.

“More than just opposition. It’s not enough even if he’s chewed to death.”

It was the same for Bathory.

He was the enemy who took everything from her, putting her in the same situation as Oparn.

“Please forgive the rudeness of hiding our identities. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, but we were on the run and couldn’t afford to let down our guard.”

Oparn, speaking, momentarily closed his eyes as if pondering, then sealed his lips.

His quivering eyelashes spoke volumes of his inner turmoil.

Soon.

The red eyes that appeared between his eyelids shone with determination.

“I, too, will introduce myself anew. My name is Oparn. Embarrassingly, I held the position of Ruby.”

“Oh wow. You were quite a big deal then.”

“Sorry, but I’m not well-versed in the ranks of gargoyles. Frost Mane, could you explain?”

Gargoyles differentiate their ranks with gemstones. Ruby meant direct lineage to Diamond, the king of gargoyles.

“In simple terms, he’s like a prince of the gargoyle race.”

‘No wonder he was a mercenary all by himself.’

In visual novels, the charm of the male lead isn’t just in their appearance but importantly their background.

Crown prince, duke’s heir, successor to the magic tower…

Among these prominent contenders, a promising mercenary?

Of course, being a commoner like the protagonist, there’s a point of relating without pressure.

Whether in the game or the community.

It was inevitable that Oparn’s popularity was somewhat lower.

‘But to think he was the heir to an entire race.’

Even I, who had seen the ending, hadn’t known this fact.

It was probably something reserved for DLC or a sequel.

“What happened to Diamond?”

“…Tyrone did him in.”

As expected.

Though I had suspected from the existence of the relic known as “Diamond’s Heart” available in the Evildon Empire, the king of the gargoyles had already passed away.

“Please, lend us your aid.”

Then, the white-haired prince turned suddenly towards me and Bathory.

“You seek help?”

“Before his death, Diamond prophesied the arrival of a single being who could stand against Tyrone in the human nations.”

The wrinkles caught in the bed’s blanket.

Oparn’s fist, filled with anger, clenched it tightly.

“I’ve heard the saintess has appeared. Surely, she must be the one from the prophecy. It’s my fervent wish to meet her, the one who could aid in avenging our race, and join forces.”

Our eyes met in a moment.

“The saintess. Is it that cursed girl seen by you and the warrior’s descendant?”

“Don’t go around saying that openly. You’d get beaten for blaspheming, being just a maid.”

I roughly got the picture.

Unrevealed in the original work, I hadn’t known, but to Oparn, the protagonist, Lina, was essentially a tool for revenge.

‘That’s a rather impure motive for a male lead candidate.’

So, he wooed her with a purpose, but in the end, he could give up everything for her, or something like that?

It also explained why he was angry at the protagonist for choosing to help the injured and abandon the demon hunt.

“Could it be, do you know where she is? Ugh.”

As he tried to sit up abruptly, he groaned and collapsed back onto the bed.

“Please calm down first. I’m willing to help you.”

Fortunately.

I struggled to suppress the corners of my mouth that kept curling into a half-moon.

Malevolent and impure motives?

Not mixed with love?

But what does that matter?

The most important thing for me is the candidate for the male lead who will separate that damn prince and the original protagonist.

‘He wants this so much, how could I not push him forward?’

To prevent Luciana’s downfall,

And for the peace of the world.

I made an irresistible sweet offer to the guy who would take on that important role.

“Though I am just a worthless doppelgänger, I have a debt of gratitude to Diamond in the past. I’ll gladly help you. Besides, I saw the saintess at this royal court.”

The gargoyle young master, who has just arrived in the human realm, completely ignorant of the ways of the world.

I extended a handshake with a fraudulent contract to him.

“Is that true?!”

“Of course. I’ve lived in the human world for a long time. Arranging a meeting place is not a difficult task.”

Like a traveler who found a path in the pitch darkness, he smiled brightly.

Unaware that it was a mere empty promise.

“Frost Mane, why does your expression seem so impure?”

“You’re mistaken.”

The one who had experienced it before felt something ominous and showed a very uncomfortable furrowed brow, but I paid it no mind.

Let’s see.

‘If I want to naturally push the male lead candidate next to the protagonist…?’

Making Oparn follow the original flow as much as possible, so he can enroll in the academy,

That’s the first step.

My own blueprint that I’m drawing out.

Just as it disrupted it, an unpleasant sound pierced my head.

[Emergency mission emerged!]

‘…I thought I dealt with that earlier.’

Does this mean it’s not over with Oparn fending off those attackers earlier?

I sighed and turned my head toward the status window that was demanding something more.

[The obsession of the Levains with Oparn, a direct descendant of Diamond, is beyond imagination. To the extent that ‘the true dragon’ watches over him.]

[The mercenaries repelled were just the vanguard; the main force aiming for him has not yet arrived.]

[Prepare for subsequent attacks.]

[Reward: ???]

Ah.

The corners of my mouth twisted strangely without a moment’s pause.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Oparn. I have something to ask you.”

“Oh, yes! Anything!”

“Are you still hiding something?”

His smiling face froze in place.

“What do you mean by that?”

He tried to make excuses, but it was clear to my eyes.

Avoiding my gaze, fidgeting with his fingers.

So, that’s how it’s going to be.

Then I have my own thoughts.

“Let’s forget about cooperation.”

He stood up abruptly at my declaration.

“Why, why!”

“I offered a helping hand out of goodwill, but I find it uncomfortable to ally myself with someone who still insists on carrying their worries alone.”

It’s clear that he’s hiding something I don’t know about.

If that’s the case, I have no choice but to overturn the board.

Oparn, with his clear desires, would be an easy target to control.

But I refuse to start with someone who goes astray right from the beginning.

‘Besides, did I say that the candidates for the male lead are only you and the prince?’

I wonder, who will regret more? (Though it’s a lie) me, trying to repay the grace of Diamond, or Oparn, who might miss the chance to meet the saintess right before his eyes.

“Let’s go, Bathory.”

“You, are you sure it’s alright? He’s one of the few who can stand against Tyrone.”

“Ah, I cannot allow a dagger aimed at my back that I don’t know of.”

I answered leisurely while glancing sideways.

Yes.

That’s actually what I want to say.

A male lead candidate? There are plenty of substitutes, but where would I meet them?

I am tied to the north. Except for the prince, I haven’t seen a trace of them in years!

All my attention is on Oparn, the most promising lifeline behind me.

‘Please hold onto me.’

Better than those I haven’t even made contact with yet, you have matching interests,

And above all, you seem easy to use.

And then.

“Please wait a moment.”

Oparn, dragging his ailing body, blocked the door I was about to leave through.

He frowned as if pondering for a moment, then opened his mouth.

“I’m sorry. I, too, have a heavy treasure in my possession.”

…Treasure?”

From the moment Oparn stood up.

Struggling to hold back a smile, I unwittingly swallowed hard.

The flashing instinct of a thief.

I could intuitively sense that the ‘treasure’ he mentioned with difficulty was not something ordinary.

A seal shining transparently.

The treasure revealed its form from within his pocket.

“This is the treasure of our race, Diamond Seal.”

“…What is that?”

Even I, who prided myself on conquering this game, had never heard of this treasure.

Glancing sideways, Bathory also looked puzzled.

It seems that even she, who had lived in the Evildon Empire for a long time, did not know.

“You wouldn’t know. This is… because it selects the king of gargoyles.”

***

“What about him?”

“We lost him.”

The commander scolded the slow-reacting Levain mercenaries with an angry voice.

“How pathetic! You couldn’t even catch a wounded gargoyle kid!”

“…There was interference.”

“Interference?! Is that interference more important than the orders from the true dragon?”

– Flinch.

The scales of a tail peeking out from behind the robe bristled.

“We must steal his treasure by any means! It’s a mission given by the true dragon himself!”

There was also personal greed mixed in that voice.

‘This is a mission directly given by the true dragon. If I complete this successfully, I might even aim for the position of legion commander.’

It didn’t matter how dangerous it was.

As long as he could use the hired mercenaries.

“Don’t worry and keep using the magical tools! We’ll attack as soon as we locate him!”

The great warrior ruling the north?

As if those who inherited dragon’s blood could be matched by him.

From the start, humans who obstructed the path of the Levain tribe deserved to die.

Even tearing their bodies to shreds would not be enough.

“Spida. No, was it Spedo? I wonder what their blood tastes like.”

His confidence was evident, as the horns rising above his head sparkled with mana.

“Cheh. Acting all high and mighty. One would think he single-handedly annihilated the humans of the north.”

Proud for sneaking in by bypassing the Balant fortress with a thrown bait.

But.

For him, who was already dreaming of a beautiful future seated in the position of legion commander, the dissatisfied murmuring of his subordinate mercenaries was unheard.

Lying in bed, Bella looked at her own arm, which had become nothing but bones.

As she threw off the blanket, her emaciated form was revealed.

Bella smiled faintly and got up.

Her bedroom was filled only with tools for training, armor, and sharp blades.

Among those, there was a dress she had never taken out.

She opened the wardrobe.

Bought for a few dozen gold at the market, perhaps?

A clean dress she had never worn.

She took out a dress adorned with bright lace.

It was the first time in her life she was trying on a dress.

Silver long hair and beautiful eyes. A beauty that seemed decadent because of her emaciation.

And a necklace once given by King Bard.

“It’s a birthday gift, Bella.”

She casually tried on the necklace embedded with emeralds.

It was astonishing.

Because she looked far more beautiful in the mirror than she had thought.

She smiled awkwardly.

She had lived her life as a knight. Once a blacksmith’s daughter, and at another time, she lived in an arena.

There was no life for her as a woman.

“It’s enough now.”

Bella smiled faintly.

For the first and last time, she had lived as a woman for a few moments.

She took out a pill she had kept well stored on one side.

This pill, if swallowed, causes immediate death if captured or in similar situations.

Bella’s loyalty to Bard, who had saved her, was tremendous.

If Bard asked, she could actually commit suicide.

“I’ve heard the stories.”

Bella’s senses were informed by the stories of the servants.

That Bard was making efforts to save her, even at great cost.

It was an unwelcome thing.

To the king, a knight was something to be used and discarded.

Bella planned to swallow the pill this evening.

“I’m not scared at all.”

Bella smiled slightly.

As a knight, wouldn’t this be a truly noble death?

If she was going to die anyway, wouldn’t it be better if the king was a bit more comfortable?

And what she could do was to ensure that the king would not be discomforted by discovering her in such a state.

Bella was about to change her clothes again when a man entered.

It was Hyun-soo.

***

Hyun-soo was certain.

‘If Bella is saved, His Majesty Bard will return that much.’

The Bard he knew was such a person.

Therefore, he did not regret using the Saint’s Prayer, which can only be uttered twice in a lifetime, for her.

As he walked to Bella’s bedroom, he recalled one strange thing.

Sudden Quest: Because of a woman prepared for death.

“A woman prepared for death?”

Hyun-soo couldn’t help but be puzzled by the significance of it all.

Suddenly struck by a thought, Hyun-soo ran towards Bella’s bedroom.

Entering her bedroom, Hyun-soo saw her in an unusual state.

Seeing the pill in her palm, he instantly understood.

She, with a momentarily perplexed expression, calmly reassured him.

“Will you keep it a secret from His Majesty?”

Looking at her bitter smile, Hyun-soo shook his head.

He also mentioned that the saint he brought was there.

Instead, she said:

“That’s good. Hyun-soo, being recognized as a benefactor by Saint Aria. Now that you’ve become a noble of the kingdom, please use that power to prosper the kingdom.”

Chivalry.

That was the problem.

For the country rather than one’s own life.

Hyun-soo saw her stubbornness.

He seemed to be in a dilemma. Suddenly, he remembered a conversation with Nel.

“Hyun-soo, you have a special power besides your blacksmith skills.”

“A special power? What is it?”

“You’re good with words.”

Yes, Hyun-soo had that power, just as Nel had mentioned.

Just then, a notification appeared.

[Bella was destined to die. However, by bringing Aria, her fate might change.]

[A new episode that you’ve never seen before may begin.]

‘A new episode involving Bella and me might start?’

Hyun-soo looked puzzled.

It was a story he couldn’t quite grasp.

Could there be a story starting between her and him?

‘Let’s set that aside for now.’

Hyun-soo simply intended to change this stubborn lady’s mind in his own way.

***

It was only natural.

As a knight, wishing for the prosperity of the kingdom and the peace of the king rather than just one’s own life.

That’s why Bella had not an iota of regret.

Then, the blacksmith man in front of her asked.

“…Aren’t you afraid?”

His probing question sent a shiver through Bella’s heart.

But trying to be as calm as possible, pretending it was nothing.

“I am a knight. A knight finds the happiest rest in death when dying for the kingdom.”

Bella hypnotized herself.

I am not afraid.

It’s a knight’s duty.

Then, Hyun-soo looked outside the window. It was raining.

Looking at the cold winter night’s rain, he said,

“Spring is coming soon.”

Bella’s face twisted miserably. She knew.

A beautiful spring she would not see, wishing for the kingdom’s well-being while refusing the saint’s prayer.

Thinking about him mentioning the spring she would not see, she wondered,

Is he mocking me?

“We’ll go on an outing when spring comes.”

“You…”

Yes, how could a mere blacksmith man understand her heart?

Could he understand the noble heart of a knight, how beautiful it is for a knight to die for the kingdom…

“On that day, Lady Bella wishes to stand by Your Highness as always.”

“…?”

No, it wasn’t so. Bella looked into the eyes of the blacksmith with wavering eyes.

At first sight, he was a novice.

The second time, he was the creator of a legendary sword.

Upon seeing him again, he had saved a territory.

And now, he speaks as a nobleman.

He is not mocking her death or disregarding chivalry.

He is embracing her, a knight who fears revealing the last woman she cherished.

Bella imagines in her head.

Fields beautifully blooming with flowers and bushes.

Knights aligning with Barad, standing in front of a large tree, looking at her.

Her figure, walking among them in silver armor with a sword at her waist, comes to mind.

As always, His Majesty Barad will smile at her with a blind faith.

Standing beside His Majesty, she will feel the trembling bushes and look over the world beyond the hill.

“Isn’t it such a pity?”

Bella slowly collapses.

“For a beautiful flower like you to wither.”

He respected her as a knight with the word “beautiful” and protected the heart of a woman with the word “flower.”

Eventually, it bursts out.

“I want to live…”

To continue surviving and silently stand by His Majesty’s side as always.

“I want to live…”

Again, on a very pleasant day.

She wants to secretly wear this dress and stroll through the market.

The crumbling Bella asks,

“Why, why…”

The blacksmith smiles beautifully.

“Because His Majesty needs you.”

Yes, it awakens Bella.

To survive and continue to be by His Majesty’s side is the right thing to do rather than dying after swallowing a pill.

Clinging to a worthless chivalry.

At this moment, Bella regained the will to live.

And…

[A new story begins.]

[This story is about a knight who will risk their life for you in the distant future.]

[Knight Bella harbors another sun in her heart.]

In the end, Hyun-soo steps forward, and Saint Aria approaches Bella.

Beyond the closing door, Bella looks at the back of a man until the last moment.

He brought Aria to heal the plague and also instilled the will to live.

At this moment, she made one resolve.

“As much as my lord…”

The vow to protect him.

Saint Aria’s prayer began. Divine light filled the entire church.

That warm energy resembled the warmth in Bella’s heart.

***

Stepping outside, Hyun-soo saw the most brilliant and beautiful light emanating from the room.

[This story is about a knight who will risk their life to protect you in the distant future.]

[Knight Bella harbors another sun in her heart.]

And he remembered the astonishing notification.

‘Bella might be able to join our Bright Future?’

Hyun-soo knows Bella to have surpassed even the captain of the knights in talent.

The strongest after Barad, recognized by the Kingdom of Goyard.

‘To bring her over, I’ll need to grow the Bright Future.’

Barad is a friend, but annoyingly stingy. He doesn’t give in easily.

‘Is the reward I received this time a possibility?’

Yes, that reward could possibly be the chance to bring Bella over.

But that alone was enough.

That possibility carried astronomical value, immeasurable even in money.

And then Aria came out.

“I will now meet with the Pope to discuss the value of the Holy Sword.”

“Understood.”

The saint and the paladins left again.

And the value of the Holy Sword was very important to Hyun-soo, too.

‘How much money is left?’

In fact, Hyun-soo knew that with that Holy Sword, he could solve all the remaining medical bills and have money to spare.

But what Hyun-soo needed was money to start anew.

He was an ordinary man.

He longed for a good house, a good car, a good life.

The value of the Holy Sword would be the first step towards that life.

***

The Papacy of the Church of Ares.

The Pope holds power comparable to the Emperor.

Pope Carsele of the 16th couldn’t understand.

‘Saint Aria, how could she make such a unilateral decision…’

Aria is the wisest person the Pope knows.

Yet, Aria independently dispatched the holy child, Bellia.

And what was more absurd was in the papal bull Carsele received.

‘I wish for the Holy Sword to be designated as a sacred relic. The Church of Ares must prepare a reward for the said blacksmith, and I have promised to add 30% more to the value.’

Carsele’s head throbbed. He had heard that the blacksmith was a lifesaver.

But wasn’t this too much?

Moreover, a sacred relic signifies the most holy object representing the church.

‘The Holy Sword?’

It was preposterous.

A proposal to make such a sword, not even bestowed by the god Ares, into a sacred object?

Aria might have hit her head.

He resolved to give Aria a piece of his mind!

And then he began to examine the signet sword Aria had handed over.

***

“…I did act too independently. 30% was indeed too much.”

Aria, who had decided on her own to add 30% to the value, looked guilty.

To that, Carsele said,

“Right, for an artifact of this level, we should have offered more! What’s this about just 30%!”

“…Excuse me?”

Aria was taken aback, and Carsele finally understood her reasoning. Our church must maintain a close relationship with Hyun-soo at all costs.

“Let’s add another 10% and make it a total of 40% extra.”

The Pope, Aria, and the blacksmiths together assessed its value.

Even those who appraised it were amazed.

“To think a single sword could be valued this much.”

“But it’s worth it.”

Carsele could not deny Aria’s words.

And not long after sending the formal document, Hyun-soo came and left with a look of amazement as he received the reward.

Bank of Korea.

Bank teller Lee Da-som was handling her usual counter duties.

Ding-dong-

With the cheerful sound of a notification, Da-som saw a young man approaching.

“Wow…”

Though his face was covered with a mask, he was quite tall and had good proportions.

He must be around 23? 24?

“I’d like to check my deposit details and organize my bank book.”

Da-som, as usual, inserted the bank book into the machine.

Zzzing-

The machine printed the transaction and balance details into the bank book.

For people of this age, if they save well, they might have ten million won, or at least one million.

Da-som was surprised as she checked if the bank book was organized properly.

[1,600,000,000 won.]

Because a whopping 1.6 billion won had just been deposited.

“Exchange money?”

Da-som was greatly surprised.

However, as a bank clerk, she did not show it overtly and handed it back.

The young man looked down at the bank book for a while, then suddenly started to cry.

“They’ve sent it all…”

Confused by his cryptic remark, Da-som looked puzzled.

Then, an old man at the next counter said,

“He must have had debts? Congratulations, it’s rare to see a grown man cry. Now you only have happiness left.”

To this, the young man responded with a bright smile,

“That’s right, only happiness remains now.”

Da-som joined in,

“Congratulations.”

And the young man, wiping the tears from his eyes, left the bank with a happy smile.

Act 51

Prev I TOC I Next

Razlot, a spy for the Dawn Society, was quite impressed by Julian’s composed demeanor.

Despite what happened, he goes on to care for the orchids as usual.

Any ordinary person would have shown some sort of reaction.

Recently, amid the events that unfolded, one would expect self-praise or an abrupt display of irritability, something of that nature.

Yet, Julian returned to his everyday life as if nothing had happened.

“With this, I shall briefly conclude the report on Sir Aiden.”

“Hmm…”

The only thing that seemed to interest him was the Dawn Society’s Bishop, ‘Aiden de Donassien,’ showing his fangs.

Razlot, having reported briefly on his movements, swallowed at Julian’s short sigh.

The occasional hostility peeking through his tranquility was as sharp as a dagger.

“There hasn’t been any notable activity.”

“I thought he would take decisive action to cut off the lifeline right after Alphas was killed,” Julian murmured, his words arranged with a boldness.

‘To be so calm, knowing his life is targeted.’

Acknowledging that his life is closely associated with death, Razlot couldn’t help but admire his approach to life.

“Apart from that, currently, the Dawn Society’s Bishop, ‘Sir Pintel,’ is believed to be attacking a convoy suspected of transporting Soulstones.”

“Bishop Pintel… Soulstones… Hmm.”

Julian pondered for a moment before smiling warmly as usual.

“Ah, by the way, I wonder if the letter of recommendation has served its purpose?”

With that smile, Julian changed the subject.

Of course, it didn’t seem to stem from mere curiosity.

It was likely meant to remind him of his role as a spy.

“Yes, thanks to you.”

“That’s good to hear.”

With those words, Julian smiled subtly once again.

His half-closed eyes showed no hint of emotion, and the smile that gently played on his lips was as calm as ever.

In that atmosphere, Razlot thought that there was nothing in this world that Julian could possibly fear.

***

“Why is it so quiet?”

‘The instructor’s mission has ended, and the incident at the academy annex was quietly resolved by Vice Principal Allom.’

Thoughts of the conversation I had with Linne in the infirmary kept coming back to me.

-In fact, I vaguely remember the conversation you had with Alphas.

I thought she was unconscious…

She had been eavesdropping on the conversation between me and Alphas.

It was a conversation that could lead someone to infer that I am part of the ‘Dawn Society’.

‘I was sure someone would come looking…’

If the Swordmaster or someone from the royal side were to send someone for fact verification, I’ve already prepared a script for my defense. The documents piled up on the table right now are precisely for that purpose.

‘Could she have not heard it properly?’ I couldn’t dismiss the possibility that Linne might not have noticed.

‘It’s possible.’ On further thought, Linne wasn’t in a normal state at that time. It’s conceivable. Linne, who harbors a great grudge against the ‘Dawn Society,’ wouldn’t overlook such a thing.

“Then, it would indeed be fortunate.” I sighed with relief and leaned back in the chair. Though I shouldn’t let my guard down completely, the lack of any response for days suggests that there might not be much to worry about.

‘Aiden must be thinking the same.’ I’m aware he’s after my life and sent Alphas, but I haven’t thought about retaliating against him. The reason is that Hayden Reich, as the ‘Black Knight,’ plans to cut off Bishop Aiden’s lifeline.

“Our protagonist will take care of it, so there’s no need for me to dirty my hands.” The glorious tales of the ‘Black Knight.’ The thought brought a smirk to my face. Hayden Reich’s hidden identity used when revealing himself as the ‘Swordmaster’ would be inconvenient. Starting with handling ‘Pintel,’ as Razlot mentioned a little while ago, the name of the ‘Black Knight’ will become known to the Capital.

‘All I need to do is prevent Aiden from causing any trouble until then.’

The thought of reduced trouble kept a smile on my face.

“Hehe. Hehehe…”

But the smile didn’t last long. The sticky sensation felt when killing someone. That unpleasant feeling traveled up my fingertips. It wasn’t particularly bothersome, but as the name ‘Black Knight’ came to the fore, this ‘Julian’s sensation began to irritate me severely.

‘It must be because of the ‘trailer’ I saw before.’

The dark alleyways of the Capital. The scene where ‘Julian’ discovers the fact of the ‘Black Knight’ and Hayden Reich is brutally murdered. When I first inhabited ‘Julian,’ I was confident such a thing wouldn’t happen, but as I used the trait <Opened Eyes> more, ‘Julian’s instincts felt like they were continuously gnawing at ‘Lee Si-hoo’s subconscious.

‘I need to train a bit more to avoid being consumed.’

When <Opened Eyes> first manifested, I regained consciousness after ruthlessly swinging the sword, but this time, didn’t I control the sword with my will to the end? ‘A strong spirit dwells in a strong body.’

It seems that those words were not false.

‘Since I’ve thought of it, I should move my body.’

Haven’t they said to strike the iron while it’s hot?

Having reached that thought, I grabbed my sword and headed to the training ground.

***

Among the several training grounds within the imperial palace, I headed to Training Ground No. 3.

This place was filled with knights who were off-duty or without assignments, tirelessly honing their swordsmanship, shedding sweat and tears to improve themselves and join a higher-ranking knight order.

As I entered the training ground, people’s attention started to shift towards me.

“It’s Julian.”

“Gulp.”

Those who were sparring, and those who were blindly practicing their swordsmanship, all stopped their movements and sneaked glances at me.

Some openly showed their fear above their heads.

‘This isn’t surprising.’

Leaving them behind, I walked towards the weapon rack.

Though the sword made of moonstone at my waist suited me, I wanted to try a new weapon.

‘Since I’ve decided to move my body, I should also test out new possibilities.’

The weapon I picked up from the rack was none other than a ‘spear.’

A weapon that required both hands, unlike a sword, which made it feel somewhat awkward.

“A spear…?”

“Wasn’t Julian’s specialty swordsmanship?”

“Right, it’s no coincidence he’s called ‘Julian of the Moonlight Sword’.”

The tense atmosphere around me started to ease a little when I picked up a spear, which I don’t usually use.

“Sir Julian, if you’re considering learning the spear, how about honing your skills through a duel with me?”

The one who initially showed ‘fear’ but then mockingly requested a duel had no knight order emblem, indicating he was likely an apprentice knight who had not yet joined an order.

‘His intentions are clear.’

He was aiming for my unfamiliarity with the spear, hoping to impress the knight order officials gathered around.

However, I didn’t feel like refusing.

Even if it was my first time handling a spear, sparring felt more fulfilling than just hitting a straw dummy.

‘I would have avoided even this kind of sparring in the past.’

How much my thoughts have changed.

I smiled and gave a ‘Julian-like’ response.

“Haha, it seems I looked too easy to you. Then, shall we have a light match?”

As soon as I accepted the duel, the area was quickly prepared.

The numerous knights training gave up their spots and moved aside to watch Julian’s duel.

“A spear, huh… Always up to something unusual.”

“Even the most skilled can’t perform to their full potential with an unfamiliar weapon.”

“His arrogance reaches the skies.”

A few of the gathered knights clearly expected my defeat.

The spear felt incredibly awkward in my hands, a first for me.

It was at least twice as long as the swords I was used to, and its balance and handling felt completely different from a ‘sword,’ which didn’t please me at all.

‘But still…’

It doesn’t seem like I’ll lose.

“Haaaah!”

As I was gauging the weight and balance of the spear, the duel began.

With a loud yell, the knight charged at me.

‘A sword.’

Being familiar with that weapon, I could easily estimate its reach.

‘The strategy with a spear is to use its long reach to prevent the opponent from getting close and to neutralize them.’

Swoosh!

A light thrust with the spear produced a sharp sound as it sliced through the air, echoing across the training ground.

Even though it was a blunt weapon for training, it made such a sound.

Surprised by the attack, the knight stumbled back in an attempt to dodge, misstepped, and was slow to regain his stance.

“This can’t be all you’ve got. With such skills, you won’t be able to join any knight order.”

Even in a friendly duel, my mouth couldn’t help but taunt the opponent.

“Y-y-you…!”

The knight, now furious and face flushed red, charged at me again.

I could sense a faint killing intent from him and thrust my spear once more.

However, he wasn’t foolish enough to fall for the same attack twice.

Anticipating my move, he used his sword to deflect the spear to the side.

A sword, being relatively shorter, has an advantage in close combat.

If a spear allows an approach, in close quarters, it stands no chance against a ‘sword.’

‘Of course, I don’t think I’ll lose just by allowing an approach… But the moment I do, even if I’m not used to this weapon, the great ‘Julian’s’ reputation will be tarnished.’

I have no choice but to push back with force.

My arms, clutching the spear, started to show more pronounced veins as I exerted more power.

Using the centrifugal force, I aimed the spear down towards the knight’s head.

Clang!

The knight, who was swinging his sword at me, was startled by the spear coming towards his head and quickly raised his sword to block.

“What power…!”

As the knight’s sword began to be pushed back, he muttered in confusion.

He tried desperately to stand his ground, but…

‘It’s futile.’

Crack─!

With a bit more force from me, the spear made a sinister cracking sound.

“Wait a moment.”

The spear, starting to split, eventually broke in two.

“Ah, aahhh!”

As the spear broke, the force of my downward strike split the knight’s armor from chest to abdomen.

“Ugh…”

Groaning, the knight stepped back with eyes wide as a startled rabbit, looking down at his abdomen.

The broken part was sharp enough to cut through the shirt, leaving a wound underneath from which blood definitely flowed.

‘This is unexpected…’

An unfortunate incident during the duel.

I, true to ‘Julian,’ approached the knight to address the situation.

“With just this level of skill, you challenged me to a duel?”

My flat tone made the knight look down at his bleeding abdomen and then back at me.

“U-u-ugh..”

Startled, the knight made a bizarre noise and stepped back. Above his head, a thick, very dark purple haze began to rise.

Why would the one who was all fiery-eyed and eager to fight during the duel suddenly act this way?

It wasn’t hard to guess.

“Indeed… it’s Julian.”

“Even in a duel, if you bare your fangs, he won’t let you off.”

“Go and stop him.”

“How can we stop that monster?”

To the onlookers, it appeared as though I deliberately broke the spear and used the fragments to injure the knight, as if it was an ‘intentional act of aggression.’

‘Isn’t that a bit of a delusion?’

The attitude of the apprentice knight, who had challenged me to a duel when I was relatively unfamiliar with the ‘spear’ to make a name for himself, was offensive, but it was just a regular duel.

Yet, to think ‘Julian’ would go mad enough to kill his opponent just because he showed his teeth…

‘It’s entirely possible.’

I found myself nodding unwittingly, accepting the atmosphere.

“Julian…!”

At that moment, a familiar face broke through the crowd gathered at the training ground. It was Herand Crypart, the third son of the Crypart family.

“Brother Herand.”

“Your victory is unquestionable. How about we stop here?”

He continued in his usual trembling tone.

Thankfully, his appearance eased the tense atmosphere of the training ground a bit.

The terrified apprentice knight fled the training ground at his fastest possible speed.

“Haha, Brother Herand, even I don’t kill people that easily.”

I watched his retreating figure and smiled at Herand, throwing him a light joke.

“Is… is that so…? Th-then, I understand!”

But as always, Herand didn’t take my joke as a joke. Above his head, only dense purple mists swirled, undispersed.

Round 4

Prev | TOC | Next

Although my garden is just about 100 square meters, I divided it into sections and planted various things.

“This was probably cherry tomatoes, right?”

The sprouting plant seemed to be a cherry tomato.

For now, it was an Earth cherry tomato seed, not one from the dungeon, but I had also planted seeds of a plant called ‘Layla’ found only in the dungeon nearby.

“This is incredible, really.”

If they just keep growing like this, they should bear fruit in about 100 days.

I’m not sure yet if there’s any problem, but just seeing the sprouts was hugely satisfying.

…But then?

“What’s this?”

Am I seeing things wrong?

It seemed to have grown a bit more in that short time.

As I rubbed my eyes and tried to figure out what was happening, suddenly Mark2 touched me.

Squirm-

“What’s wrong? Oh!”

I glanced back and could see a sprout piercing through the soil in real-time.

And it wasn’t even on the tomato line, but from the side where I planted carrots.

“Oh, no…”

The growth rate, visibly identifiable, was insane.

Is it because of the dungeon? Or because of Mark2?

[Farming LV.1]

Enhances the growth of crops.

Increases yield.

I reviewed Mark2’s abilities once again.

The description wasn’t particularly striking.

But could just this phrase cause such an insane phenomenon?

Squirm!

Mark2 squirmed and touched me again.

I realized that sprouts were also emerging where I was standing.

I hastily left the garden to observe this magical scene.

“Aaaaah…”

The emotion was indescribable.

The sprouts were stretching out as if time had been sped up.

Although the land was too narrow to plant much, it was still a spectacular sight.

“Does this even make sense?”

Now it was clear.

It wasn’t just the right timing; it was thanks to Mark2’s ability.

Otherwise, this phenomenon couldn’t be explained.

“Ah! Tomatoes!”

I began to set up the supports I had prepared in advance next to the tomatoes.

Normally, you’d wait until the tomatoes had grown a bit before doing this, but the growth rate was extraordinary.

After installing a total of 100 stakes, I could see that they had grown up to my shin.

“This is unbelievable.”

A cry of joy seemed about to burst forth.

It was just cherry tomatoes and carrots growing, but why was I so thrilled?

Honestly, I hadn’t even expected much from the dungeon fruit, Layla, but it was growing steadily too.

“People say no one has successfully cultivated dungeon plants.”

From what I’ve gathered over three years, no one has ever succeeded in growing dungeon plants.

If that’s the case, then I would be the first person on Earth to successfully cultivate a dungeon plant.

“Can’t eat wild Layla either.”

If anything, Layla tasted similar to Earth’s mangosteen but was much juicier and thus considered as a potential juice ingredient.

‘But will fruits and vegetables infused with magic grow?’

One concern was the phrase ‘infused with magic’ from the quest.

It’s said that most fruits, vegetables, and other plants from the dungeon are imbued with magic, but the real question was whether the crops I artificially grew would also be imbued with magic.

“Let’s just see what happens.”

“It seemed that I could see the results much faster than I expected given the rate of growth.

In the meantime, Mark2 was crawling around between the garden beds, fiddling with something. I didn’t know what it was doing, but it looked somehow pretty.

“Hehehe.”

Cute thing.

As I was watching the plants grow without noticing the time passing, Slime1, having completed its exploration, came up to me.

Wiggle-

“Oh? Did you find something too?”

Wiggle!

I got up from my spot, feeling like I kind of understood the slime’s wiggling now. Seeing me stand up, Slime1 started to crawl somewhere as if guiding me.

“Looks like there’s something, huh?”

A slight fear crept in.

However, seeing that the slime was fine, I thought it couldn’t be too serious and commanded,

“If the place you are leading me to is dangerous, stop right there.”

Wiggle-

The creature kept moving.

Taking its response as a sign that it wasn’t dangerous, I followed it to a corner of the dungeon.

Wiggle!

“Here?”

It was pointing to a part beyond my expectations.

That was none other than the floor.

I would have expected some changes on the wall or something, but the floor…

‘Or maybe there was always something on this floor?’

I hadn’t checked this particular spot on the floor before the dungeon transformation. I had only checked the dirt floors that could be used as fields, not these stone floors.

Wiggle-

Slime squeezed its body into a strange seam on the floor. Then, it really went through the narrow gap like a liquid.

“No, Slime. I can’t do that like you.”

What should I do now?

There was a pickaxe prepared for the garden, but I was a bit cautious since I didn’t know what was beneath.

Plop!

As if it heard me, the slime popped out of the gap and bounced.

“What’s down there?”

Wiggle!

“If there’s a monster, move to the right, if not, to the left.”

The slime moved to the left.

So there definitely wasn’t a monster.

“Is there an item?”

The slime moved to the left again.

If there’s no item, then what exactly is down there?

“It’s not dangerous, right? Move to the left if it’s dangerous this time.”

Wiggle!

The slime moved to the right, so I decided to trust it.

I now held the pickaxe in my hand and struck down on what was hard to even call a crack in the floor.

“Awakening sure is good.”

Generally, when you awaken, your physical abilities improve beyond those of an ordinary person, though only slightly.

“But what is it? Is it because of dual awakening?”

For some reason, I felt that my stamina hadn’t decreased as before. The cause must have been a dual awakening, so I just let it be.

Clang! Crunch!

Gradually, the gap widened, and finally, I could roughly see below.

I lay down on the floor, peering through with one eye to see what was there.

“It’s bright, isn’t it?”

For some unknown reason, the space below was very bright. Thanks to this, I could see what the space was like and confirmed that there was nothing there, just a vast emptiness.

“I guess I’ll know if I go down.”

I got up again and started to use the pickaxe. Thanks to my tireless stamina, I could continue working without much difficulty, and as the crack got bigger, I was able to widen the hole much faster than at the beginning.

“Wow.”

Finally, through a hole large enough for me to go through, I just peeked my head down and looked around 360 degrees.

“There are shining stones embedded. They look expensive, don’t they?”

Then suddenly, I realized that the entire space below was a dirt floor. I was already using just over 100 square yards of land as a field because that’s all I could use where I lived, but it would be a different story if I had such a space.

“How many square yards is this? It’s huge, isn’t it?”

It seemed to be at least 1,000 square yards. Furthermore, on one side, I noticed a stream of water flowing from a crack in the wall, naturally creating a pond-like feature.

“…Does it seem like it’s urging me to farm?”

That was the environment.

The problem was that the ceiling was high, so once I went down, I couldn’t come back up without a ladder, but that could be resolved by just obtaining a ladder.

“…”

I was deep in thought.

In fact, I had only farmed because of a quest. Farming itself was not important; it was just a means to an end.

But now that I had awakened the Slime Lord ability and realized that I could farm through the slime, things were different.

‘Should I just switch to being a farmer?’

Even though I was an awakened being, I was not one who hunted monsters.

Given the situation, it seemed not bad to specialize as an awakened being in this area using my abilities.

This was a field completely ignored by other awakened beings. It was a chance to have my own competitive edge.

“Let’s see the results first and then reconsider.”

The crops were growing fast, but I hadn’t seen any fruits yet. The decision could wait until after I saw the crops.

However, I couldn’t help but consider it positively, since it seemed like the only thing I could do with the slime was farming.

“Good job, Slime.”

Wiggle!

I petted the wiggling creature and then picked it up with both hands.

It had a strangely pleasant texture that was addictive, something I hadn’t noticed yesterday due to being preoccupied.

Ssshhh-

“Oh, typical slime. It stretches a lot.”

Wiggle!

Holding the wiggling creature in my hands, I returned to the field to find that the tomatoes had already grown up to my knees.

“That’s kind of scary.”

Mark2 was diligently crawling around the garden, which had transformed into a small jungle. To my eyes, it just seemed to be wiggling and moving around, but it was emitting a rather serious vibe.

“But don’t you guys eat something like food?”

Wiggle?

As I fiddled with the slime, which seemed to question what I meant, I realized I still didn’t know much about slimes.

Information was always important, I felt.

I should have learned a bit more about slimes when I had gone out, but since going out wasn’t hard, I could just make the effort again.

‘I was too distracted by the sudden events.’

From now on, it was important to gradually learn more.

So, I played with Slime1 in my hands while absently watching Mark2 and the garden.

Just watching it was so healing that I couldn’t fall asleep, and I ended up pulling an all-nighter.

“Sigh.”

As a result of staying up all night, the tomatoes had grown up to my waist. They had grown enough that it wouldn’t be surprising if they started to bloom.

“Come to think of it, I didn’t even thin out the carrots or prune the tomato plants.”

But it was perfect.

It must have been Mark2 working hard on those processes.

“Amazing, huh?”

He was truly a perfect farmer, or should I say laborer, either way, it was impressive.

If the tomatoes have grown this much, is it time to start harvesting the carrots?

Honestly, I’m not sure.

Their growth rate was so fast that it was hard to gauge compared to ordinary crops.

“Mark2, call me when it’s time to harvest the crops. Don’t do it alone.”

Gloop!

As if responding, Mark2 squirmed and was busily doing something else in the Layla field.

He had spent more time in the area where Layla was planted, and it seemed Layla required more care.

“Layla is something I need to know about.”

It was just planted.

That’s why it occupied the smallest area in the garden.

Beep beep beep! Beep beep beep!

The alarm sounded.

Originally, this was the time to wake up.

I turned off the alarm and checked the cooldown of my ability.

It was about time for it to be usable again.

“If combining Slime1 with a potion doesn’t work, then with Mark2…”

Something about merging Slime into one was intriguing.

Was it because two had become one?

After a while, the cooldown was over.

“Phew. Here goes, Slime1!”

In one hand, the potion again, and in the other, Slime1.

As I took a deep breath, suddenly water dropped from the ceiling.

“Huh?”

The moment I looked up, something fell on my face with a thud.

“What the!”

Startled, I brushed off my face and something familiar and squishy fell to the floor.

“Slime?”

Why was there slime on the ceiling?

Looking up, I saw a small crack in the dark, high ceiling through which sunlight was streaming.

“Where did you come from?”

I wondered if I had used my ability as the Slime Lord, but it had literally just dropped from the ceiling.

“Ah!”

Now that I think about it, the first slime was like that too, and the one that had multiplied suddenly the day before also appeared out of nowhere.

“This is awesome!”

A slime dungeon where one appears every day.

Since slimes could be used as labor through the commands of the slime lord, the more the better. Totally thank you.

“Wait. Stay away for a bit.”

In case the liquid synthesis was accidentally used again, I sent the slime that had fallen from the ceiling far away.

Then, feeling it was far enough, I immediately used the liquid synthesis.

[The target is inappropriate for using the ability.]

“As expected.”

The awakening ability didn’t come with detailed instructions.

It was the same for all awakeners; they had to learn the limits and exact methods of their abilities through trial and error.

“Mark2!”

Squirm?

It was fun, Slime1.

I put down the potion and picked up Mark2.

Mark2 was definitely heavier.

“Synthesis!”

[The target is inappropriate for using the ability.]

“Huh?”

What?

It clearly indicated that liquid synthesis was possible with Mark2.

“Oh, could it be.”

LV.1 with LV.1.

LV.2 with LV.2 could be synthesized?

That seemed like a plausible method.

“So then…”

I called back the slime that had fallen from the ceiling.

Upon using the liquid synthesis again,

[Slime LV.2 has been created.]

A new Mark2 was born.

“Tomorrow, then, I’ll have to try synthesizing Mark2 with the new Mark2.”

As I set down the newly created entity, it looked around and then cuddled up to me again.

“Cute, huh?”

Wait a minute.

[Slime LV.2]

Ordinary slime.

‘Liquid synthesis possible’

Ability: Poison LV.1

“Why is your ability like that?”

Survival 70

Prev I TOC I Next

Goosebumps creeped up on me. It’s natural for the underground dungeons of the North’s dark world to be cold. But the goosebumps on my arms weren’t because of that. Malice, hatred, resentment. Things that couldn’t be confirmed in the game were vividly revealed in Oparn’s true face. Though he looked no different from a human, lacking horns on his head, his face was undeniably that of a demon.

[Hidden Condition (1/2)]

[Condition: Achievement of identifying Oparn’s true identity]

[Upon achieving the additional hidden condition ??? (2/2), a hidden mission will occur, and reward ??? can be obtained.]

An oblivious status window pops up. Normally, I would have been excited about discovering elements unknown in the game, but it wasn’t the time for that.

“…Ha. Those damned vampires. Never getting tired of chasing.”

“Bathory, behind me!”

I grabbed Bathory’s wrist, grinding her teeth, and pulled her back. Although she could be considered one of the strongest under normal circumstances, here in the Speda domain, she was merely a girl who knew a few tricks due to a binding magic. Of course, that was not to say she was weak. If Oparn used his physique to attack, she would be knocked out immediately, especially since he was also a demon and capable of any trickery. That’s why I stepped forward. But, my throat was also dry.

‘Oparn, his initial specs must be no joke.’

A stamina sturdy enough to be called a reliable source of energy. Strength that easily meets the requirements for wearing heavy armor and shields. True to his tank character, Oparn showed excellence in both aspects, even hiding his deep demonic nature.

A frontal confrontation with such a warrior? In this narrow room?

‘It’s too disadvantageous. It’s not suitable for a counterattack, so for now, the plan is to buy as much time as possible, ensuring Bathory’s safety before widening the battlefield…’

My thoughts on escaping this predicament were made moot by the sudden action of my opponent.

-Clang!

He made the first move in an entirely unexpected direction.

“What, what the…”

“Are you just going to stand there gawking! You plan to let him escape?”

I had only considered the possibility of him attacking. I never expected him to jump out the window.

“We’re on the fourth floor, and he managed to throw himself out with an injured body.”

In another sense, that was quite characteristic of a tank character.

“Why are you so calm?! Hurry up and follow him! He might be a minion of the Demon King!”

“…Well.”

I still had my doubts.

Was Oparn really the enemy? Was this guy, who could only run away from us, really hostile?

-Lennok, time is of the essence.

I remembered that even in the original work, he, known for his good nature, showed a temperamental side only once.

-Wait. There are still many patients. We can’t leave them behind.

-You’re kind, like a saint. But, we can’t take care of everyone! Don’t obsess over the small sacrifices now! Remember, we must eliminate the source.

The final boss, the disaster subjugation. In this mission, he was more sincere and took the lead more than anyone else.

‘I thought it was just his righteous heart being expressed in the game, but…’

I got goosebumps.

The fact that he was a demon. Whether in the game or now, hiding his true nature. Using the nonexistent civil war among mercenaries as an excuse, the pursuer who strives to hide the victim. All these elements intertwined to form a single picture.

“Come on, hurry up and chase! Do you have time to just stare blankly at me! If only I hadn’t made that worthless contract, I would have chased him myself…!”

Why, I wonder. Why does Bathory, who is fidgeting anxiously in front of me, keep catching my eye?

“Bathory. I have something to ask you.”

“…Sigh. What a time to ask.”

“It’s about the Demon King. It wasn’t just vampires he attacked, was it?”

Perhaps it was because her sworn enemy was mentioned. Sharp fangs peeked out from between Bathory’s red lips.

A fierce aura began to flow around the blonde girl.

“Why do you ask such a thing?”

“It seems I’ve made you uncomfortable with my unnecessary question.”

“…No. Feel free to ask. There’s no reason to hide anything from a follower.”

The last puzzle piece. It flowed out from Bathory’s mouth.

“It’s not just me. Who would look kindly upon his absurd declaration to rule over all demons? Naturally, it started with opposition from his own kind and spread to others.”

The intensification of the civil war. The sparks did not just fly towards the vampires.

“Gargoyles as well?”

“…Well, yes. Unlike us, who have a few individuals with strong individualistic tendencies, they live in groups. I’ve heard rumors that they banded together and even went to war.”

Just like vampires, gargoyles, who also occupy one of the three major demon positions, were not spared from this calamity.

In the future wars with the demons, they appeared almost as slaves.

“I see. Thank you.”

“Suddenly polite?”

“Yes, thanks to you, I think I’ve got a grip on the situation.”

[Hidden Condition (2/2)]

[Condition: Achievement of identifying the identity of those chasing Oparn]

[A hidden mission is unlocked.]

The status window, always affirming my speculations, inevitably intruded into my sight.

“…You’ve realized something by yourself again.”

“Of course. Though I’m not entirely sure yet.”

The confirmation should come from the person involved.

But revisiting it, it was indeed surprising.

“Seriously. I thought he was just a genial bear, but he turned out to be a fox.”

How pretentious he was in the game. Hiding his true intentions until the end.

A cheerful yet cunning male protagonist candidate, touching the window he had jumped from.

In the blue window.

Reading the continued text, I twisted the corners of my mouth slightly.

***

“Huff, huff…”

In a deserted alleyway, a man gasped for breath and merged into the darkness.

He leaned against the cold wall to calm his bloodthirsty throat, self-deprecating.

“I thought I had safely escaped to the human realm… Were there already demons infiltrated?”

How did they cross the border, where he had to cut off his horns to pass?

Even if it was a hornless vampire, they must have checked thoroughly.

No, this wasn’t the time for questions. The hostility the vampire showed him was real.

“Hurry, if I don’t escape…”

Oparn couldn’t forget. The seemingly eternal, grand, and beautiful underground palace crumbling under the feet of Levain’s troops.

“May the diamond grant us protection…!” The sight of his admired elite heavy infantry being sliced up in their armor.

“Run, my children.”

Lastly, the king who had protected their retreat, including the gargoyles, until they could escape.

Even after some time had passed, all those nightmares were still vivid in his head.

“This isn’t the time. Before those guys catch up, I must…”

Pain screamed from his body. But there was no time to care.

As he gritted his teeth and was about to move, “Found you.”

Suddenly, assailants swarmed around him.

Oparn’s face twisted. It seems those demons from earlier had leaked his location.

“Damn, to think you’d chase me all the way here.”

Their identity was not hard to guess.

Unable to hide under the robe, a crooked horn protruded conspicuously, while some, apparently not even bothering to conceal, had scales-covered tails stretching out behind them.

“Levain…!”

“Krh! Who are you to be angry? Do you have any idea how many we had to sacrifice to get here?”

Slowly, but surely, they tightened their encirclement, weapons in hand. The man in the robe at the forefront sneered.

“This is where your fate ends, young gargoyle. Hand it over.”

“Absurd!”

‘It’s an item entrusted to me by Diamond!’

Oparn’s eyes widened.

Could he really hand over what Diamond entrusted to him, even at the cost of his life, to these vile creatures?

But then, “Well, if that’s the case, we’ll just have to take it along with your life.”

A scoff laced with murderous intent flowed.

“…Is this the end?”

In truth, he knew.

He was already at his limit.

The only thing keeping him on his feet was the duty entrusted to him by Diamond.

But if willpower alone could overcome reality, his radiant homeland wouldn’t have fallen.

Even at full strength, it was hard to predict the outcome, let alone now, injured as he was.

A mere touch from them would have him collapsing.

Weapons flew at him from all sides.

As he braced for the end and closed his eyes, that’s when it happened.

“Wow, so much for the impregnable Barant Fortress, known for keeping demons at bay. Who knew it would be teeming with demons like this.”

In this tension-filled battlefield, an incongruously calm and leisurely voice flowed.

“That person is…….”

The man who had been with the vampire earlier.

Oparn’s mind became a whirlwind of thoughts at his appearance.

‘I thought he was aligned with Levain.’

However, given the current circumstances, it seemed the opposite.

The man’s face, chuckling with laughter, was filled with mockery towards the other party.

“Who are you?! We cast a spell to hinder recognition around here…?”

“Ah, thank you. That actually made it easier to find you. Should I say typical of Levain? Always so sloppy with the cleanup, magic skills so awkwardly good.”

In an instant, all of Levain’s gazes turned towards him.

‘Made it easier to find’

‘Typical of Levain’

‘Awkwardly good magic skills’

A blatant.

Disdain for their race.

His words pricked at their sky-high pride, and from within the robes, a dangerous light emerged.

“…Ho. Quite a loose tongue you have there. Makes me want to tear it out.”

“Ha-ha. Is that so? I take that as a high compliment in our line of work.”

‘…Oh.’

Oparn couldn’t help but admire him for a moment.

The man’s shrugging figure was so irritating that even Oparn wanted to punch him, let alone the Levains, the actual subjects of the mockery.

The stormy arrival placed him suddenly in the midst of everyone.

The firmly held encirclement had long since crumbled.

“Hey, human. You should pay the price for wagging your tongue freely, shouldn’t you?”

“Why, are you proposing a draw?”

“No, that would be too generous. We won’t be able to hear your screams then.”

One of the Levains, wielding a massive two-handed ax, approached him.

“First an arm, then a leg, then…!”

The Levain, boastfully continuing his cruel sentence, couldn’t finish his words.

“Kraak?!”

A streak of light grazed his shoulder, passing by.

“Oh dear, how frightening. Perhaps hold your weapon properly before you say such things.”

“……!”

“And that weapon. It’s almost like your clone, isn’t it? Wouldn’t you lose it? If the True Dragon saw this, he would be furious.”

In everyone’s shock.

The man, brimming with a cheeky smile, kicked away the ax that had fallen at his feet.

At the same time, he sighed ostentatiously, holding his cheek as if showing off. He seemed to be sculpted entirely out of mockery.

But that no longer mattered.

“Who are you?”

Confusion spread among the demons.

Not just among the Levains. Oparn felt the same surge of emotion.

‘How could such a young human…?’

The racial traits of the Levains, their tendencies, even the name of their king. These were not things an ordinary human would know.

‘…Could he possibly be a wizard who has extended his life to its limits?’

However, the magical power he exhibited was almost nonexistent.

“It’s quite early to ask, isn’t it? This feels like betrayal among our own kind.”

“Our own kind…?”

“Then let me introduce myself again.”

In his right hand, a dagger, and in the other, a golden mask.

Moving his left hand to don the mask, ominous magical power emanated from him.

“Ah, I’m not sure if you can hear me well.”

A voice full of static and unidentifiable, yet the playfulness and malice within it were unmistakable.

“My name is Frost Mane, the most inconsequential doppelgänger, at your service.”

His empty hand exaggeratedly placed on his chest, he looked ridiculous, as if a demon was clumsily imitating a human.

“And there’s no need for you to introduce yourselves.”

And in his left hand, which had been empty after the mask vanished, now flashed a golden dagger.

At first glance, he might seem comically like a jester, but the ominousness swirling behind that facade left everyone speechless.

“After all, I have no intention of leaving those who would disturb my peace alive.”

“What…?”

“Be careful!”

A dazzling line was drawn across the neck of a Levain who had just voiced his confusion.

Despite his comrade’s warning, the owner of the robe that had allowed the attack stumbled and fell.

“This bastard!”

“Hmm. This pattern is more like a mercenary’s! No wonder they felt much weaker compared to the regular troops I’ve encountered before.”

Damn! To form a surrounding formation…! Behind! Above… no, below!

What followed was sheer mockery.

The doppelgänger Oparn witnessed was truly a carnage, ripping through the Levains as if the word ‘domination’ was coined just for him.

The ingenious footwork dodging incoming halberds, spears, and greatswords by a hair’s breadth.

A golden dagger that eerily deflected any hit that happened to land.

The relentless taunts that tortured everyone’s ears.

Soon, silence enveloped all.

The Levains, who had been so boisterous just moments ago, had long since been laid low by the sword.

“Hmm. Why did you even run? It only attracts annoying flies.”

Oparn’s eyes fluttered.

The instigator of this debacle was now slowly walking towards him.

“Kill me.”

With that level of skill, he wouldn’t get far even if he ran.

Just as Oparn resignedly accepted his fate.

“What? What are you talking about?”

The slight tilt of his head and the rise in his tone seemed genuinely questioning.

“Aren’t you going to kill me?”

“Hmm. I owe Diamond from long ago. Perhaps saving you will settle that debt?”

As Oparn mulled over his words, the bizarre doppelgänger extended his hand towards him.

“Come with me for now. If you went to the lengths of cutting off your horn, there must be a situation. I’ll provide a hideout, and we can talk it out slowly there.”

Should he take this hand?

Perhaps this being, like the Levains, was after his possessions.

The doubt that had briefly surfaced in Oparn’s mind was quickly dismissed.

‘I have no choice but to comply.’

He could still determine the stranger’s intentions by following him.

“…Ugh.”

“Looks like your wounds have gotten worse.”

Above all, he was at his limit for moving any further.

His body screamed in agony.

“Well, why don’t you close your eyes and rest for a bit.”

“…What are you, offering charity as if it’s a favor? You’re not the one who will be carrying me.”

With the vampire’s voice as the last thing he heard, Oparn gave in to unconsciousness.

Before departing from the Papacy of Ares.

Hyun-soo sent a reply to Barad.

The content of the reply was simple.

“I will depart immediately to the Kingdom of Goyard with Saintess Aria and the Paladins. Please do not worry too

much.”

The details could be explained later.

With a flutter,

Hyun-soo released a falcon and looked at Aria and the Paladins, who had finished preparing.

[Paladin Cocoon Lv.323]

[Paladin Genel Lv.331]

Their levels were thrillingly high.

It was a moment to realize again how remarkable Saintess Aria was.

Moreover, the Ares religion, concerned about Aria who had recently been kidnapped and the loss of the Fifth Calamity by the Calamity Church, assigned its top ten Paladins to her.

And the Paladins mounted their horses, wearing ragged robes.

When Hyun-soo found it strange, Aria explained.

“Every single move we make can become the subject of gossip, so the Paladins and I often act like wanderers when we go out.”

At her words, Hyun-soo nodded in understanding.

They began to ride, and a reply arrived.

[Currently, a man named Duke Luckburg and eight other nobles wish to meet you. Additionally…]

Barad explained the current situation in detail.

‘A position for Lord Barad?’

This was something that could anger Hyun-soo too. There was even more shocking news.

There were assassins hiding among them.

After explaining to Aria, she said,

“It seems a powerful entrance would be appropriate. What Lord Barad needs now is exactly that kind of entrance.”

Hyun-soo understood her point.

The reason why Barad hadn’t yet purged the assassins.

He wondered if that powerful entrance was possible.

‘I’m still just at level 200…’

Something crossed his mind.

He took it out from his inventory.

It was a brown coat dropped by the Fifth Calamity, Jack.

Surprisingly, the coat looked similar to a modern coat.

What might seem like just a piece of cloth was actually a coat with astonishing power.

Description: An artifact symbolizing the Fifth Calamity, Jack, it’s the closest thing to a legend among artifacts.

The artifact closest to legend.

‘Do all the calamities have one of these artifacts?’

It was deducible from the description of the artifact.

Looking at its effects, Hyun-soo marveled.

‘With this…’

He could make a strong entrance. Hyun-soo immediately wore the brown coat.

As they rode, rain began to fall suddenly.

Swooshing through the rain, they arrived at the Kingdom of Goyard.

Walking through the corridors and entering, Hyun-soo immediately activated it.

[Dignity of Disaster]

[Creates an eerie atmosphere as if disaster is approaching, emitting a strong sense of oppression.]

[As an effect, black currents flutter from the feet with every step.]

[Applies the status effect: Fear.]

Hyun-soo walked in with the strongest demeanor possible,

Eyeing the eight nobles threatening Barad as if they were insignificant.

Then, standing at the entrance, he warned them before heading back inside.

He counted down in the center.

“One.”

Brock, the vice-captain of the hidden Crimson Dragon squad, couldn’t hide his dismay.

[Assassin Brock Lv.299]

“Two.”

How could an unknown person have seen through their identities?

However, what puzzled them was the assassin’s senses telling them he was weaker.

Brock thought differently.

‘Barad cannot be killed.’

Then, he would kill the nobles and the man in front of them.

Three, before the sound ended, Brock signaled the assassins to move like flashes of light.

‘It’s a success…!’

Brock exulted as he plunged a dagger towards Hyun-soo’s neck.

The dagger was 3 cm away from the neck.

That moment.

[Command of Disaster]

[The Command of Disaster controls everything around with telekinesis.]

[It’s so powerful that movement is impossible.]

[Lasts for 6 seconds.]

Brock could only roll his eyes.

Looking around with those eyes,

The assassins targeting the nobles, and the other members targeting the man in front, were all caught in mid-air as if time had stopped.

The man, looking at him with chilling eyes, lowered his raised arm.

Puhahahahak-!

In Brock’s eyes, splendid swords engraved with the name ‘Ares’ struck down in a single blow.

Brock, losing an arm, saw his members being bisected in an instant, and finally lost consciousness.

As Hyun-soo walked past the fallen Brock, Barad was seen smirking in a way that others couldn’t see.

And so it began.

The plan we had woven together.

“Why did we have to come here?”

“My benefactor. If it’s Hyun-soo’s words, I had to come.”

The affectionate gaze of Saintess Aria made the nobles step back.

Duke Luckburg looked at Barad, Hyun-soo, and Aria with shaking eyes.

And then, one of the nobles said something he shouldn’t have.

“Th-thank you for saving us.”

Duke Luckburg’s face crumpled miserably.

He had given them a pretext.

Sword King Barad stood up.

“So it is, Hyun-soo. You’ve saved the kingdom’s top eight nobles. You all must feel a great deal of gratitude towards my friend.”

Barad’s eyes sharpened like a hawk’s.

Under his scrutinizing gaze, Luckburg slowly bowed his head in acknowledgment.

“I, too, feel a great debt of gratitude towards him.”

“Is that so?”

Sword King Barad gained leverage.

He spoke in a cold tone.

“Now that I think about it, too many harsh incidents have been occurring in the territory you govern…”

Finally, Barad had a pretext.

Now the people would stand by Barad.

Therefore, he contemplated doing something he had long been unable to do.

“How about you and the nobles here try to bring prosperity to the Arham territory?”

Arham territory.

Located on the very edge of the Kingdom of Goyard, it’s a land abandoned due to its barren soil and the monsters stirring around it.

For 20 years, its people have consistently been fleeing to find a new homeland.

The reason for sending them there was simple.

They were being demoted.

From the most luxurious and splendid territories to the most worthless place, where it wouldn’t be strange if they were attacked and killed at any moment.

“We accept your command.”

Duke Luckburg and the other nobles no longer had the strength to oppose him.

And Barad looked at Hyun-soo with an exhilarated expression.

‘He was just one of the many I had hoped for in my heart.’

A wish that it would be nice if he could also be considered a close friend.

He was making that wish come true.

Finally, what Barad had planned was about to be realized.

***

Hyun-soo received a notification.

[Sword King Barad’s dream is becoming a reality.]

[It started from your fingertips.]

[You are taking a step forward for him.]

Hyun-soo looked puzzled.

He did not know about the dream Barad harbored.

He simply knelt following his words.

Following him, Aria and the Paladins went outside.

Everyone in the Goyard Kingdom present knelt like Hyun-soo.

“I hereby grant you the title of viscount for saving everyone here.”

Hyun-soo was inevitably surprised.

[You may rise to the rank of a Viscount in the Goyard Kingdom.]

[As a Viscount, you will receive 5,000 gold from the nation every month.]

[You can command and lead soldiers.]

Hyun-soo would now indefinitely receive an equivalent of about 5 million won every month.

‘But it’s not enough for me.’

There had been many offers like this, simply accepting the title of viscount because of his friendship with Barad?

‘It’s right to refuse.’

Then.

[You may even become a king in the future.]

His thoughts shifted.

Barad smiled subtly, nodding slowly.

He too knew that Hyun-soo wouldn’t just remain a mere viscount.

In the Korean server, about 200 users held the title of viscount.

23 were barons.

7 were viscounts.

And about 2 were counts.

Yet, not one of them.

‘Has heard this notification.’

Hyun-soo’s heart raced.

He was once a weakling.

The story of such a weakling possibly becoming a king.

“I accept the command.”

[You have been elevated to the rank of Viscount in the Goyard Kingdom.]

Barad smiled contentedly.

Then, he looked down a distant corridor.

It meant to save Bella.

Then, Hyun-soo received a notification.

Ding!

[Sudden Quest: A Woman Prepared for Death is generated.]

[Sudden Quest: A Woman Prepared for Death]

Grade: A

Requirement: Someone to save Bella

Reward: ???

Penalty for Failure: None

Description: Bella might find peace in a few days. Comfort her.

Before going to meet Bella, Hyun-soo wore a puzzled expression.

The reward was listed as ???.

However, he did not mind it.

He hurried to meet Bella.

***

Special User Management Team.

Team Leader Kim murmured, “Bella was destined to die originally.”

She was a pitiful woman.

In reality, she possessed talent comparable to the Sword King. Over time, she would shine even brighter.

“Now she can continue to grow.”

Of course, with Ares’ high degree of freedom, unpredictable events like this often occur.

And the two of them knew what the reward marked as ??? was.

“Loyalty…”

Kim Tae-seok smirked bitterly.

The loyalty of a woman with talent to succeed the Sword King.

That was the reward.

The problem was this:

[Sword King Barad will grant a significant reward to Hyun-soo, the user who saved Bella.]

[One possibility is that Bella might be sent to him later on.]

The Special User Management Team predicts rewards in such a way because notifications inform them.

And the two saw Hyun-soo as exceptionally astute.

By saving Bella, Hyun-soo was confident that Barad would do something comparable for him.

And the notification was proof of that.

However, soon Kim Tae-seok said,

“Would Bella really follow Hyun-soo if Sword King Barad asked her to?”

“Probably not. Bella’s loyalty to Barad is far deeper and stronger than Barad or even we can imagine.”

“Right, and Barad will eventually retract that command due to Bella’s strong refusal.”

After finishing their conversation, the two stood up.

It was 3 PM.

Busy monitoring various users, they hadn’t even had time to eat.

They talked while heading out to eat.

“The Guild Bright Future could use an exceptional knight.”

“NPCs accomplish things that users can’t, after all.”

Users log into the game, but NPCs live there.

Thus, NPCs possess a great power to transform the finiteness of a user into infinity.

Protecting the stronghold is also the role of NPCs.

After their late meal, they returned.

Kim Tae-seok was shocked by the notification that popped up on the monitor upon his return.

[The grace of the lord is activated.]

[……]

[……]

[……]

Tae-seok doubted his eyes as he saw the last notification.

[Knight Bella has harbored another sun in her heart.]

Act 50

Prev I TOC I Next

After the “Opened Eyes” manifested, Alphas was completely overwhelmed.

A deep purple haze, symbolizing “fear”, continually emerged above the grimacing Alphas, who was in severe pain.

Still, showing a will to counterattack, he clutched at the severed end of his arm, looking around, presumably… searching for his dropped sword.

Alphas, preoccupied with finding his sword and thus completely unaware of showing his back to me, kept scanning the surroundings.

“To show your back in front of me, even demons wouldn’t dare such an act.”

With a cold smile, I seized the moment and slashed at his back with my sword.

“Aaaaargh!”

I barely suppressed a snicker at the sight of him collapsing.

Deep within, the malevolent instinct of ‘Julian’ was budding.

If I were to fully embrace all these emotions intensified by the “Opened Eyes”, an uncontrollable situation would ensue.

“Huff… Huff…”

Alphas gasped for air as he lay fallen.

Now, seemingly having spotted his sword, his blurred gaze fixed on the severed right arm holding his weapon, within a barely reachable distance if he lunged.

“Aaaaaaah…!”

“To wield a sword in front of me, you need my permission.”

Of course, I had no intention of granting it.

I stepped on his abdomen, putting my weight on him.

Alphas, desperate to survive, attempted a joint lock on me with his left arm and right leg.

He also tried to knock me down by squeezing mana from his mana vein for a momentary physical enhancement.

But to me, his actions felt as slow as a turtle crawling.

“Ugh……..!”

“Is this the best you can do?”

I sneered, slowly driving my sword into his solar plexus, where the ‘major mana vein’ or ‘main artery’ was located.

As the mana vein was damaged with intense pain, Alphas’s face turned pale.

Trying to pull out the sword embedded in his chest with his remaining left hand, only his fingers got sliced off by the aura surrounding the weapon.

“Kuh, kuhuk…”

Realizing he had no other options, he loosened the grip of his hand and looked up at me with a bloodied smile.

“Just because ArchBishop Tenellon favors you… don’t act as if you own everything, Julian!”

Ignoring Alphas’s words, I began to twist the handle of the sword.

To ensure his breath was cut off for good.

“Bi, Bishop… and the future… Ugh! The bishops… most… Ugh! They, they don’t favor you… Ugh!”

As I exerted more force, a rough cough along with a mouthful of blood came out of Alphas.

“Monster… wait for you in hell… Ugh… JJ… “

As he cursed, Alphas’s head dropped to the side, hitting the ground.

Looking down at his slumped body, I felt an indescribable emptiness.

Whether it’s because of the “Opened Eyes”, I never expected such a gap to widen even though it was always distinct.

“Wouldn’t this level of power be enough to kill a ‘Sword Saint’?”

I was shocked by the words that unconsciously came out as ‘Julian’.

Did anyone hear?

“Cough… Cough!”

Startled by the coughing sound from behind, I quickly turned around.

‘Ah, Linne had collapsed.’

At first glance, there didn’t seem to be any major injuries.

It must have been the internal injuries caused by using ‘aura’ that had left her in this state.

A father’s revenge.

The girl who ended up powerless in front of her enemy.

However, there was something else to worry about than the pity arising from Linne right now.

‘Did she hear…?’

It was uncertain whether she was still unconscious or had regained consciousness.

If she had been awake, she might have heard the conversation between Alphas and me about the Dawn Society.

‘With a little deduction, she could infer that I’m part of the Dawn Society from our conversation.’

Of course, if she was unconscious, she wouldn’t have heard anything, but it’s foolish to hang on to such uncertainty.

‘Hmm. What to do.’

While I don’t wish for the protagonist to die, there are priorities.

With a hardened expression, I slowly approached her and gripped the sword handle.

Just like with Alphas, ‘to eliminate a future threat.’

Hesitation.

At that moment, I stopped the sword aimed at Linne.

‘What am I doing?’

This train of thought had gone beyond ‘acting’.

Isn’t what I’m seeking perfect ‘acting’, not ‘assimilation’?

As these thoughts reached this point, noises from outside began to be felt.

People were rushing in due to the loud noise.

“What in the world!”

Academy officials who entered the annex were dumbfounded by the brutally dead bodies, the destroyed interior of the annex, and the scattered bloodstains.

Some of the officials, failing to grasp the situation properly, showed overt hostility.

“Knight Julian…?”

Fortunately, there was no deepening of misunderstanding.

Because Vice Principal Allom Chorni, who pushed through the crowd urgently, recognized me.

“Ah.”

***

Linne woke up with a short sigh, regaining consciousness and opening her eyes.

What she saw were the white ceiling and wallpaper, and bottles emitting a sharp scent of alcohol.

‘Ah, it’s the infirmary… Ouch.’

As she tried to get up, a slight pain covered her whole body.

‘What happened?’

Grasping her foggy, blurred consciousness, Linne faintly remembered why she had ended up in the infirmary.

-Thought your face looked familiar. Derain Londebell’s little parasite of a daughter, weren’t you?

During her encounter with Alphas, a member of the Dawn Society and one of the assailants who attacked her mansion and killed her father.

-Such a sorry state. If this continues, you’ll tarnish not just your own reputation but mine as well.

At the same time, she also remembered why she was still alive. The man who used the teachings of her master, Hayden Reich, solely for his own greed. Julian Crypart Frason. He had saved her in a critical moment.

Linne clenched the bedsheets tightly with her eyes shut.

‘…How shameful.’

Being saved by Julian? It wasn’t entirely incorrect, but more than that, she was disgusted with her own weakness. For not being able to avenge her father. For not being able to properly follow her master’s teachings. All kinds of negative thoughts swirled in her head. What was all her effort for until now?

“Have you awakened?”

Just as her doubts were about to spiral further, a familiar voice was heard from the entrance.

“Knight Julian.”

Normally, she would have glared and spat out insulting remarks, but Linne held back. It was a fact that this man had saved her. Expressing gratitude was the first step. As a disciple of the ‘Sword Saint’ and for the honor of the Londebell family, she could no longer tarnish their reputation.

“Thank you for your help, Knight Julian. I will definitely repay this debt someday.”

“I do not consider it a debt. Think of it as a mere act of mercy bestowed upon a weak fellow disciple.”

Linne looked up at him with wide eyes, but that was all. There was nothing wrong with what he had said.

“You’re unusually calm. I thought you would retort to my words.”

“…Because I am well aware of my situation right now.”

“Then, while you’re realizing your own abilities, consider this as well.”

With an emotionless tone, Julian took out a document from his pocket. It was an objection form. Linne had submitted it to the student office, asking for a reconsideration of Julian’s personal opinion.

“Lack of aura endurance is your flaw. To not recognize that and to submit such an objection, how shameless.”

“I, it’s not that I didn’t recognize it…!”

“Then instead of submitting such a form, you should have humbly accepted my opinion.”

Swoosh!

Julian, with a slight squint and a bitter smile, tore up the objection form Linne had submitted. Placing the torn document on the table, Julian stood up. Adjusting the top button of his shirt as if he had finished what he came for, he turned to leave.

Linne, deflated, lowered her head with a dazed expression.

‘Is he right…? If I had humbly accepted his opinion as he said, I wouldn’t have raised such an objection. It was nothing but a rebellion against Julian, petty pride, and arrogance, intoxicated by the name of ‘genius. What have I been wasting my time for? Tarnishing the family name and failing to properly avenge my father, what was it all for?’

“Your mana vein holds more mana than others.”

Linne lifted her head to look at Julian.

“……Yes?”

“If we approach it with conventional concepts, problems are bound to arise. You shouldn’t only accumulate mana in the ‘main artery’ but also utilize the other major veins.”

Linne was so flustered by Julian’s words that she couldn’t give a proper response.

‘Is he giving me advice now? This man, who desires only power and luxury and sees compassion as something frivolous?’

She stared blankly at Julian’s back.

“Why are you suddenly telling me this?”

“Because we are fellow disciples.”

Fellow disciples.

Linne’s lips trembled at those words.

Upon reflection, those words weren’t meant for her benefit. Surely, it was a roundabout way of saying not to tarnish the name of the ‘Sword Saint.’ After all, it’s widely known that he is obsessed with the name ‘Sword Saint.’

“By the way… what happened to Alphas?”

“He’s dead.”

There was no emotion in Julian’s statement.

“Is that so…”

The revenge she should have rightfully achieved. As one fragment of it slipped from her hands, Linne felt a mixture of emotions.

“You must have been completely unconscious. Well, that’s fortunate.”

At his mention of ‘fortunate,’ Linne slowly spoke up.

“Actually… I vaguely remember the conversation between you and Alphas.”

Startled by her words, Julian slowly turned his head. The smile he usually wore had disappeared. As always, there was no sign of panic on his face.

“Is that so?”

“Yes.”

Julian looked at her intently. Linne felt as though she was suffocating under his gaze, but she didn’t look away.

“I… have lost.”

Indeed, Linne was able to overhear some of Julian and Alphas’s conversation within her blurred consciousness.

“…after that incident, I… or rather, ‘Julian’ as a person would be considered dead.”

The unclear parts of their conversation that firmly stuck in her mind were:

“I’ve lost.”

“After that incident,”

“I’m as good as dead.”

Piecing together these bits, Linne concluded that Julian, like her, had lost someone important to him because of the Dawn Society.

“If I say it’s a misunderstanding, would you believe me?”

“What part… is a misunderstanding?”

“All of it.”

A lie.

Her intuition told her that Julian was lying.

“So, I hope you won’t speak of this to anyone.”

With those words, he moved to leave the room again.

…It’s a fact known to no one. Not extending kindness to others means not expecting kindness in return. Not understanding others means not expecting to be understood in return. Thus, he has cast his past into oblivion.

“Such a foolish person.”

Linne tasted bitterness on the tip of her tongue. She might not understand his values, but as someone who also seeks vengeance, she couldn’t help but admire his mindset.

“…I need to work harder.”

With that thought, Linne turned her gaze towards the window where her sword sheath lay.

***

Meanwhile, as soon as Julian left the infirmary, his steps gradually quickened.

‘She vaguely remembers the conversation between Alphas and me?’

Though his narrowed eyes hid his emotions, his quickened pace reflected his urgent state of mind.

‘Is this bad!?’

Round 3

Prev | TOC | Next

After descending from Obongsan Mountain, I rode the bus and then took the subway to my destination, all the while keeping my eyes wide open, vigilant that the bag containing the potion would not be stolen or suffer any impact.

Seoul, Yongsan.

Once famous for its electronics market, it had now transformed into a marketplace for awakened ones, resembling a general store of sorts.

Here, items from dungeons were sold wholesale, and direct transactions among the awakened ones occurred frequently.

Above all, with the artisans who had awakened their abilities starting to do business here, Yongsan had become the mecca for awakened individuals in our country.

‘I thought I would have set up a shop here too once…’

Considering my ability was in item creation, it was a natural thought.

However, unlike other creators, I could only synthesize liquids, and furthermore, the cooldown was so long that mass production was impossible. I had realized long ago that opening a shop was out of the question.

Ding-a-ling!

“Welcome! Oh? Is that Kyu-seong?”

As I opened the door, Young-seong hyung, the owner of the store, greeted me warmly.

This store had been a regular spot for me ever since I first became an awakened one, and after getting to know each other a bit, he had become a supporter who would buy my potions at a reasonable price.

“Hyung (Brother), how have you been?”

“Not bad, what about you? It’s only been a week this time?”

“Yes. And I have quite a lot this time.”

“Hmm? What’s the matter all of a sudden? Need some cash?”

Young-seong hyung, who was about 15 years older than me, always treated me like a beloved nephew.

Instead of answering, I took out all the potions from my bag and laid them out on the counter.

Eighteen in total.

They were half of the stock I had painstakingly accumulated.

Considering I had used my ability every single day for over three years, it wasn’t much, but unavoidable due to basic expenses.

“Kyu-seong, tell hyung. What’s going on?”

“Nothing much. Just thought I might run a dungeon.”

“Suddenly?”

“It’s because of a quest, you know.”

The third quest, which had been stuck for three years.

However, I hadn’t told anyone about this.

It wasn’t something to be proud of, and there was no need to bring it up for sympathy or potential disdain.

If speaking out could have solved the quest, I would have done so without a second thought about pride. But otherwise, there was no need to mention it.

Young-seong hyung might guess what my ability was about, but he didn’t know I was still stuck on the third quest.

Now, I thought maybe I could resolve it, which is why I had come to sell the stock.

“Going to be in the dungeon for a while?”

“Yes. It could be days, maybe even months.”

“Tsk. You’ve got it tough. If you need help, just tell hyung. I have quite a network, you know.”

Even though his shop was small, Young-seong hyung’s statement wasn’t just for show.

Although I didn’t need help immediately, I was grateful and bowed my head.

“Thank you, hyung. I’ll definitely take advantage of ‘hyung’s chance’ if it’s urgent.”

“Sure. Don’t hesitate to ask anytime.”

Hyung neatly arranged my potions and then went into the back room for a moment.

After a brief wait, he came out with a thick envelope.

“Here’s some money. I put in a bit extra, so don’t misunderstand and make sure you take it.”

“Hyung, you really don’t have to do this.”

“Shh, boy. We’ve known each other for three years now. Think of it as pocket money from hyung. It’s not much compared to what I’ve earned thanks to your potions.”

There was no reason to refuse the gift.

However, perhaps it was because I had been staying in dungeons and not meeting people lately, or maybe it was due to the hardships I had endured and the events of the previous day.

Suddenly, I felt an overwhelming surge of emotion.

“……Thank you.”

“Sure. You look thinner every time I see you; make sure to eat well. It would be a shame to waste such a handsome face, kid.”

As I expressed my gratitude, not wanting to show my choked-up emotions, I was about to leave the store when.

“Hey, Kyu-seong!”

“Yes?”

“Take this, too.”

Young-seong hyung suddenly appeared and thrust something into my hand. Looking down, I saw a box wrapped in cloth.

The cloth was boldly marked with the words ‘Hoengseong Hanwoo’.

“Go and grill some at home.”

“No, hyung…”

“I had some leftover. You’re not going straight home now, are you? Since you’re out after a long time, you should see your family before you go back. Take it and eat it together.”

“I’ll enjoy it, hyung.”

I did not refuse and bowed my head once more as I left the store.

The pocket of my chest holding the envelope of money and my hand carrying the meat felt especially heavy.

“This won’t be enough.”

I looked at the meat Young-seong hyung had prepared for me, smiled bitterly, and headed back to Yangju, where my family was.

* * *

“It’s been a while.”

Not far from the dungeon where I had been staying.

It seemed like almost a month since I last visited.

I could have visited more often since it was close, but I didn’t. How could I face my family when I had been stagnating for three years?

I hadn’t done anything wrong, but I still felt reluctant.

Beep! Beep-beep-beep!

Ding-dong-

“I’m here.”

As I opened the front door and entered, my mother, who had heard my voice, got up from the sofa where she was watching TV.

“Oh my, why didn’t you call before coming?”

“I’ll be heading back soon. Where’s Dad?”

“He should be back any minute now. I thought it was your dad at the door, oh, by the way, have you eaten?”

“I actually brought some meat. Are the kids out too?”

“Jae-seong will be back soon. Seon-ah went to a university MT yesterday. She’ll probably be back tomorrow.”

“Ah, she went to an MT. I envy college students.”

After dropping off my bag, I glanced around the house.

Nothing had changed at home.

It looked like an ordinary home, but I knew the family’s financial situation wasn’t great.

And I had contributed to that situation.

“How have things been lately? Are you doing well?”

“So-so.”

I replied vaguely and pulled an envelope from my pocket.

Since I had already set aside my living expenses, I handed the envelope directly to my mother.

“Mom, here. Add this to the household expenses.”

“My child, what’s all this money suddenly? That’s okay. You keep it and use it.”

The reason I could become an awakened one.

That was possible through the enormous support of my parents.

There were two ways to become an awakened one: one was natural awakening and the other was forced awakening.

‘It must have been in the hundreds of millions.’

Honestly, I don’t know the exact amount.

At that time, my father was running a business, so money was not a big issue.

But life is unpredictable.

My father’s once thriving business suddenly started to falter, and it was awkward to give up on becoming an Awakener after already having invested so much money into it.

Faced with a difficult choice, my father ultimately chose to support me.

‘And so I became an Awakener, only to have the ability of ‘liquid synthesis.”

He never showed it outwardly, but I’m sure my father must have been the most disappointed when he heard about my ability.

“It’s not much. But since I’m an Awakener, I’m making some money, so consider this pocket money.”

“You should invest that money in your abilities to earn more. Keep it.”

“Mom.”

“Child, I said it’s okay. Keep it and use it for yourself.”

Beep! Beep-beep-beep!

Ding-dong-

Just then, my father returned.

My younger brother Jae-seong was with him.

“Uh? Brother?”

“Kyu-seong is here.”

Jaeseong, the second child, had been working in a small restaurant since last year. Having graduated from a vocational college, he matured much earlier than either me or our youngest sister, Seon-ah, perhaps because he was sandwiched between us.

I felt a bit guilty; if it weren’t for me, he might have been able to study at a culinary school in France and become a successful chef by now.

“You’re here, Dad. Long time no see, Jae-seong.”

“What have you been doing? And what’s that?”

“I brought some money for living expenses. Dad, please take it.”

As I tried to give the envelope to my father, my mother quickly took it.

“No, he said he’s giving it to me.”

“It was supposed to be given to me originally.”

Watching my parents playfully bicker, I also gave some pocket money to Jae-seong. It was only 100,000 won, but carrying a debt of gratitude, I wanted to give him something.

“What’s this money? Keep it, brother.”

“How can you talk exactly like Mom without missing a beat? Should I just give it to Seon-ah then?”

“No, then I’ll take it.”

After some lively discussion, we had dinner together.

I couldn’t really join in the conversation, just awkwardly smiling and listening.

Maybe it was because I’d been living in dungeons for so long.

I didn’t even know what was trendy in the outside world these days, nor was I up to date with the latest news or gossip.

“When are you going back?”

While grilling the meat, I shrugged my shoulders at my father’s question.

“I have to go back right after we eat.”

“Why not take a few days off?”

“Ah, what’s the point of me taking a break? Even if I do, there’s nothing for me to do.”

“Don’t push yourself too hard.”

“……”

My father said it nonchalantly, but why did the past three years flash before my eyes?

I had not taken a single day off.

People might think I’m just slacking off since I haven’t completed the quest or made any progress, but that wasn’t the case.

I realized more each day that I wasn’t moving forward, and even in moments of inactivity, I discovered that rest was not permitted for me.

“Here, Mom will grill the meat, so wrap this up and try it. Ahh.”

“Ah, um.”

Even as I chewed the wrap my mother made, I couldn’t really taste it.

Thoughts of whether coming home was a mistake or indeed the right decision intertwined complexly.

“I enjoyed the meal.”

“We enjoyed having you. Come home more often. Isn’t it hard for us to even see our son’s face?”

My mother smiled warmly at me.

Rejecting my family’s requests to stay the night and returning to the dungeon, I felt strange.

“I’ve become sentimentally emotional for no reason.”

Would I have felt this way if I hadn’t undergone a dual awakening? I don’t think so. They say the most dangerous moment for a person stranded at sea is when land first comes into view. The sight of hope and the deceptive sense of proximity can make them jump into the sea in desperation, unable to endure even that short period.

‘I think I understand that feeling a bit.’

It’s still too early to rejoice or cry. Emotions should only be released when true success is achieved, not in ambiguous situations where it’s premature to let down your guard. Lost in these thoughts, I soon arrived at the dungeon, where the familiar scenery unfolded before me.

At the same time, Mark Two and Slime One greeted me as if they had been waiting.

Gurgle—

Gloop! Gloop!

“Did you have a good day today? Have you been working hard?”

Gurgle!

Huh? I thought the scene was familiar, but something fresh caught my eye. I first thought I was seeing things because of the slime, but upon closer inspection, there really was something fresh…

“A sprout?”

I calmed my startled heart and ran straight to the garden, feeling the slimes eagerly following behind me.

“It’s not a weed, is it?”

It wasn’t clear, but weeds usually don’t grow with such dicotyledonous leaves. No, to anyone’s eyes, this was clearly not a weed.

“Unbelievable…”

Was it because of the slime?

But could it really grow this much in just one day?

Or perhaps it was always meant to grow, and the timing just coincidentally matched with the presence of the slime?

“Wow!”

Whatever the case, the important fact was that a sprout had finally emerged. I hadn’t managed to sprout anything in the last three years, and this was the first sign of success I had cultivated.

Gloop!

As I marveled at this, Mark Two gurgled proudly beside me, as if asking for praise.
