Act 20

Prev I TOC I Next

Instead of introducing someone, Aileen asked for a favor.

After accepting her proposal and following her, we arrived at the Bayer Academy.

A beautiful sight.

While it was considered one of the empire’s seven wonders due to its use of color contrast like a royal palace, its understated naturalness provided a sense of stability.

‘Stability, huh.’

Surely, part of the reason I felt this way was because the Bayer Academy is one of the main stages in “Let’s Kill the Demon Lord.”

This place has a deep connection with the protagonist, ‘Hayden Reich.’

It was the first place he saw ‘Julian,’ and it’s somewhat related to his past.

It was a location ‘players’ frequently saw in the game.

“So, what do you need from me, Miss Aileen?”

“It’s a simple task.”

Aileen began walking along the well-maintained academy roads.

 Of course, I followed her.

“It’s something you’re very good at.”

So, what is it, exactly?

As I quietly followed her, I felt the gazes of those around us turning our way.

Some bore the color of ‘fear,’ while others glanced over, wary.

“Miss Aileen, are you going to the old building?”

At that moment, a man approached Aileen in the middle of the road.

He wore the emblem of ‘4th Order, Leo’ on his shoulder and had the Bayer Academy’s teacher’s ID around his neck.

He was a professor at the Bayer Academy, teaching magic, and a Wizard.

“Yes, Sir Hardy Godfrey.”

Aileen greeted him with a bright smile.

“It’s also nice to see you here, Mr. Julian. I never imagined we’d meet in such a place.”

“Yes, it’s nice to meet you.”

The man acknowledged me as well.

As I returned the greeting with a small smile, he flinched momentarily before quickly shifting his gaze back to Aileen.

“And as for you, Miss Aileen, it seems you’ve been saddled with a rather troublesome task.”

“Troublesome? It’s something that needs to be done for the students. I’ve never thought of it as troublesome.”

“Is that so? Well, considering your background, it’s not something Miss Aileen would complain about.”

The man sneered in a demeaning way.

I thought they were simply acquaintances, but it seems they’re the kind that’s uncomfortable around each other.

“To shed the label of a collateral branch, one must endure and strive, after all.”

“Then, Sir Hardy must have his own challenges to endure.”

Aileen didn’t hold back either.

“What are you implying?”

“You received a harsher evaluation than me during the last thesis review. Even more than me, a person from a collateral branch.”

“What, what….”

The man’s face turned red.

Thanks to that, the disdainful looks that were only hinted at before became even more pronounced.

“To think I was worried about you taking on such a burdensome task, and instead of gratitude, I get insulted.”

“Oh, I was worried too.”

“Who’s worrying about whom!?”

Their voices grew louder.

This could escalate from a verbal argument to an actual fight if we’re not careful.

“Anyway, this is why you shouldn’t employ those from a collateral branch. They don’t know their place…”

“That seems to be your opinion, Sir Hardy.”

He seemed flustered, not expecting me to intervene.

Yeah, honestly, it’s not even my business, and there’s nothing good about butting in. But I’m not planning to waste time on needless matters here, especially when every second is precious. Especially if it’s because of some trivial dispute.

“Whether related by blood or not, all nobles are citizens of the Empire. Could I interpret your recent words as a challenge to the Emperor, who has built the Empire’s discipline?”

“Wearing glasses, aren’t you jumping to conclusions? I merely pointed out the shortcomings of a collateral bloodline…”

“Is that so?”

I smiled broadly at him as he nodded.

“I also come from a collateral line. According to what Sir Hardy says, that would make me part of the lacking lot, wouldn’t it?”

“…”

I gave a short laugh, and the man’s face stiffened. Soon, a purple haze appeared above his head.

Touching the scabbard at my waist as if to show off, the fear visibly shook him.

“Judging people by unnecessary standards is unbecoming of an academy professor. When I cut myself, I saw that blood is red regardless of noble bloodlines. Do you need to verify this?”

“……Hic.”

The man began to hiccup.

Of course, I had no intention of drawing my sword. It was merely a gesture.

I hope this teaches him a painful lesson about picking unnecessary fights.

“Let’s go, Miss Aileen.”

“Eh? Ah… Yes.”

Aileen started walking, stuttering as if confused. I bowed silently to the man and followed her.

“You weren’t really going to draw your sword, were you?”

After a while, Aileen asked cautiously, probably because of the scare earlier.

“Of course not.”

“That’s a relief.”

She sighed softly in relief.

“Thanks.”

“For what?”

“Just. For dealing with the hassle for me.”

“Don’t mention it.”

Before long, the old building came into view.

Despite being the old wing, it was no less sophisticated in architectural style than the new wing, boasting of the enormous budget of the Bayer Academy.

Its size was nothing to scoff at.

The fact that such a building was left as an ‘old wing’ strongly gave off the impression of wasteful expenditure.

“So, what do you want to ask me to do?”

“You said it yourself earlier. Something you’re very good at.”

After scanning the immense size of the old wing, I turned my gaze back to Aileen, and she continued.

“Hunting demons.”

Hunting demons? Here in the Bayer Academy?

“This place should be protected by the barrier of resonance stones.”

“I didn’t quite believe it either. But, a small creature was detected inside the old building.”

Aileen took out a compass-like case.

Inside was a stone shining with a bluish light, ‘Resonance.’

“Judging by its size, it doesn’t seem very big…”

“Seeing that the Resonance Stone is reacting, it’s definitely a demon.”

She nodded.

“If it’s this size, it’s a small demon that we could ignore. But, given the recent increase in demon appearances and the number of incidents, right?”

There were incidents in the slums, Aileen added.

“With the atmosphere being tense, we decided it’s best to deal with it before opening the old building to the public. Moreover, there’s been a rise in cults worshipping demons lately… truly, there’s no end to troubles.”

In short, Aileen has been tasked with dealing with the demon in the old building.

Normally, knights or personnel specialized in dealing with demons, like ‘Closed Eyes,’ would be deployed.

However, the demon in this old building is too small to affect the Resonance Stone’s barrier. It seems the academy does not want to make a big deal out of it.

“The problem is that the demon is too small to be within the barrier’s influence and can’t be properly detected with magic.”

“That must be troublesome.”

“Yes, very. How am I supposed to deal with a demon that can’t even be detected by the Resonance Stone in this vast old building?”

Aileen spoke with a tired look, then sneakily glanced at my face.

“So, I was hoping to ask for your help. What do you think?”

“Hmm…”

I let out a short hum.

As Aileen mentioned, the size of the old building in front of us was vast.

Finding a small, undetectable demon here would be as difficult as finding a needle in a desert.

The conversation with the man named Hardy earlier wasn’t wrong.

‘…Maybe that method would work.’

Of course, it’s not like there’s no method at all.

“Even for you, it might not be possible.”

Ignoring her, I pushed open the door to the entrance of the old building.

I expected a musty smell from the long disuse, but the old building was surprisingly clean.

Crossing the hallway to the center, I closed my eyes and focused all my senses on the ‘Mana Blood’ within me.

Breathing in and out, stirring the ‘Mana Blood’ several times, mana began to flow subtly from within my body.

The technique ‘Mana Detection’ that had been used to find criminals hiding in the slums.

“If I could have found it with that, I would have done so long ago.”

Aileen murmured beside me.

Indeed, ‘Mana Detection’ is primarily a realm for Wizards.

Knowing the settings and theories of magic doesn’t necessarily mean I could handle ‘Mana Detection’ better than Aileen, who hasn’t experienced it practically.

‘Then is there no way… Huh?’

That’s when, among the mana spreading throughout the old building, a special ‘color’ began to appear.

<The Color of Corruption>

It shows the negative emotions harbored by the other person.

However, the ‘color’ appeared in places too narrow for humans to access, like the ceiling, for instance.

“Are you listening to me? Such a small entity cannot even be detected by mana detection…”

“Shh.”

I gestured for her to be quiet, and she looked at me with half-open eyes before closing her mouth.

I began to release a greater amount of mana.

The fluctuating mana visualized like the ‘aura’ used by knights, filling the old building’s corridor like air. Looking at it, I asked Aileen,

“Will I have to compensate if the building gets damaged?”

“Eh? Ah… No, that won’t be necessary. We were planning to remodel it anyway.”

Good.

I drew my sword and slashed at the ceiling.

Crack!

With a sharp noise, a fissure instantly formed in the ceiling. Rubble fell down.

“Wha, what!?”

I saw small feet desperately trying to climb up to the ceiling.

“It seems to be a demon parasitizing a rat. Being so small, the barrier and detection were useless.”

The creature trying frantically to climb above the ceiling, I swung my sword again to knock it down, then decisively cut through its body to ensure it was dead.

Then, I started to spread the mana more widely again.

If the <Color of Corruption> was visible, it might indicate other demons, but fortunately, it seems there are no other entities besides the one just killed.

“It looks like there are no others besides this one. Fortunately, the job was easy.”

“……How did you know?”

“Know what?”

“The location of the demon! It was so small that neither the resonance stone’s barrier nor detection could catch it. How did you know?”

She pressed for an answer, but I couldn’t easily respond. After all, how could I say?

That I had read the <Color of Corruption> emitted by the demon to find its location.

That I had scattered mana visibly thick in all directions to make that <Color of Corruption> appear more clearly.

“It’s a secret.”

Dodging the question made Aileen look unsatisfied, her expression turning sulky.

Act 19

Prev I TOC I Next

“How utterly useless one’s life can be.”

A soliloquy-like muttering.

This is my assessment of Julian’s actions so far.

This damned narrow-eyed villain has not only attempted to kill his master, ‘Hayden Reich’, but is also a fool for not saving money properly.

“There is no bigger fool than one who, considering his situation, collects art instead of saving money for emergencies.”

Of course, lamenting changes nothing.

I immediately took several crafts from the mansion and headed to the promised jewelry store.

Works by famous artists recognized throughout the empire, and even the continent.

I thought these could be used to exchange for moonstones.

“…”

“Sir Julian, I’m sorry, but we do not conduct trades through bartering.”

It was a naive thought.

The jewelry store owner showed a color of ‘fear’ over his head, but still clearly refused.

A merchant would not make a losing deal.

They won’t just buy art for the sake of it.

After all, art is only art to those who recognize its value.

However, there are places in any world that would buy such items.

Namely, an art gallery.

“Ah, welcome, Sir Julian. I’m Pirsos, an appraiser from the Art Gallery ‘Id Cosmos’.”

“Nice to meet you.”

Upon entering ‘Id Cosmos’, one of the art galleries in the imperial capital, I was introduced to an appraiser.

Normally, it would take weeks to arrange for such an appraisal, but our ‘Julian’ managed to schedule it in just one day.

“May I see the item you wish to have appraised?”

At the appraiser’s request, I took out a painting that had been hanging at the entrance of the mansion.

An oil portrait,

With the creamy texture unique to oil paint, it was a picture reflecting the unique inner world of the artist.

“Oh…”

A sigh escaped the appraiser’s lips.

It was obviously no ordinary item.

It seemed to be something that any related party would drool over.

The appraiser couldn’t hide his smile, started to look at the painting, tilting it at various angles, and even pulled out a magnifying glass to take a closer look.

After a few minutes, the appraiser gave an awkward smile.

“It’s a forgery.”

“…A forgery, you say?”

“Yes.”

The appraiser nodded to my question.

“The original artist of this work is ‘Corusius Vincent’. It was trendy in the art world at one point to imitate his unique technique…”

In the end, what he meant was that it was a fake imitating the technique of a famous artist.

Meaning it’s not worth much.

Should I have brought something else?

I thought it was a fine piece of art since it was prominently displayed at the entrance of the mansion, but it seems that was not the case.

“Still, this is the first time I’ve seen a work that imitates so closely. I’d like to buy it. How about 1,000 nar?”

Fortunately, the appraiser expressed a willingness to purchase.

It seems like a fair price was offered.

I nodded.

Given the immediate need for moonstones to complete the imperfect ‘Moonlight Sword,’ every penny was precious.

There was no reason to refuse an offer of about 1,000 nar.

“Then, Sir Julian, may I go get the contract?”

“Yes.”

After nodding, the appraiser excused himself for a moment and headed inside the art gallery.

Left alone in the gallery, I looked around.

‘It’s quite crowded.’

There were many other visitors in the art gallery, all engrossed in viewing the artworks.

It was particularly interesting that most of the artworks gathered here utilized Impressionist techniques.

Considering the setting of ‘Let’s Kill the Demon Lord’ is somewhere between the medieval and modern periods, it felt quite progressive.

With that thought, I admired the most eye-catching painting.

Hmm.

Still, I don’t understand.

They say knowing and appreciating are different, but to my senses, it’s just a well-painted picture.

“Appreciating art, that’s quite an old-fashioned hobby for you.”

Someone spoke to me, unable to comprehend the profound world of art.

Given the familiar tone, it seemed the person knew me.

I turned my head to see who would speak so freely to the infamous Julian.

Dark navy hair.

And a face that turns heads.

Aileen de Donassien.

A person whose intentions have been unclear since our first meeting.

Her crimson eyes seemed to draw me in.

“Did Miss Aileen also come to visit the gallery?”

I responded nonchalantly.

I could have ignored her, but with a character as unpredictable as hers, it was necessary to gather information whenever possible.

Fortunately, there was no ‘color of denial’ floating above her head.

“Of course.”

Aileen shrugged her shoulders.

After all, what other reason is there to come to an art gallery than to view the artworks? I was the odd one out for selling art for money.

“My relative has hung a piece here in ‘Id Cosmos’.”

Aileen pointed with her finger at a painting hanging in front of us.

The painting, titled ‘Outing,’ had ‘Pheren de Donassien’ written as the artist’s name.

It seems she was talking about this ‘relative’s work right in front of us.

“Do you know?”

Suddenly, Aileen spoke while admiring the painting.

“Know what?”

“The Senate has been keeping an eye on you recently.”

This woman drops bombshells in such a casual manner.

Pretending to be unfazed and continuing to admire the painting, Aileen continued speaking.

“Indeed, when I was conducting the ‘Closed Eyes’ initiation test, I had a rough idea of what the Senate was thinking.”

“That’s why the test was conducted in such a way. Because I was well aware of the Senate’s intentions.”

Hmm, I nodded, pretending to be unaffected, but internally, it was a different story.

What Aileen had just mentioned was completely new to me.

Had I known, I would have somehow declined the role of test instructor.

“Partly because the stratagem didn’t work, but also because of the proposal you recently submitted to the secretariat, the Senate is grinding their teeth at you. They see it as a challenge to their authority.”

A proposal about the flaws in the ‘Closed Eyes’ initiation test being perceived as a challenge to authority?

“I see.”

“Pretending it doesn’t bother you, huh? Just be careful. It’s a foregone conclusion they’ll try something against you.”

“Thank you, Miss Aileen. But, are you okay with this?”

Aileen narrowed her eyes and looked at me.

“What do you mean?”

“Being a noble, you would need the Senate’s support. I’m wondering if it’s alright for you to be speaking about internal matters like this.”

“It’s fine. I may be a noble, but I’m also a mage of the Magic Tower. And…”

She trailed off, her gaze wavering for a moment before it solidified with strong resolve.

“You helped me in the Yulin Special District. I don’t like leaving debts unpaid.”

Whether for good.

Or for ill.

Aileen added that.

A saying about repaying both kindness and revenge.

“That’s a good habit.”

I smiled briefly in response.

“Sir Julian! I’ve brought the contract.”

The appraiser, who had gone to get the contract, rushed back to us.

He began to carefully lay out the documents on the table.

I took out a pen from my pocket.

“What are you doing?”

Aileen, who had been watching from beside us, asked.

I briefly explained.

I came to view the artworks and to sell a painting.

“This painting?”

“Yes, Miss Aileen.”

As the appraiser responded, Aileen slowly approached the frame laid out on the table.

Her expression became very serious as she examined the painting.

“Is it alright to just put up this piece like it’s nothing?”

“Ah, so Miss Aileen also recognizes it as a work of Corusius Vincent. However, it’s a forgery…”

“It’s genuine. I’m aware that there’s no other painter in the empire who handles oil paint like this. And the signature in the corner matches Corusius’s.”

“Excuse me?”

“Excuse me?”

The appraiser began to re-examine the painting, focusing on

the part Aileen had pointed out.

Before long, the appraiser’s face turned pale.

“This, this can’t be… it’s genuine… Such a hard-to-find item, it seems I’ve made a mistake.”

“This quality could never be a fake.”

Genuine?

Hearing the appraiser murmur, my gaze shifted to the painting laid on the table.

“So, does this change the appraisal value?”

Frankly, I didn’t care whether it was genuine or fake.

I just wanted it to be appraised for a higher price.

Naturally, genuine pieces are usually valued higher.

“I’m sorry, Sir Julian… If, if this piece is genuine, our art gallery cannot afford to purchase it.”

Can’t afford to purchase?

Then, how much is this painting actually worth?

“I asked you, how does the appraisal change?”

So, how much is this painting worth?

The appraiser, pale-faced, was unable to respond.

His pupils shook continuously, and a ‘color of fear’ intensely hovered above his head.

“J-Julian! It’s possible to make mistakes in appraisals! It’s natural for people to err!”

“I’m sorry, Sir Julian…!”

They belatedly realized how they must appear to me.

A ‘Smiling Executioner’ about to judge a mistakenly appraising appraiser.

I must have inadvertently threatened them in my excitement.

Even the notorious ‘Julian’ wouldn’t normally do this.

…Probably.

“I have no intention of blaming anyone for a mistake. As Miss

Aileen said, it’s natural for people to err.”

I spoke with a tone suggesting they shouldn’t worry, but Aileen seemed entirely unconvinced.

“However, this puts me in a difficult position. What to do with this painting…”

If the purchase of the moonstones is delayed, my situation becomes problematic.

I need to complete the ‘Moonlight Sword’ as soon as possible for a bit of safety.

“Then, shall I introduce you?”

As I was pondering, Aileen suddenly spoke up.

“I know someone who would definitely be interested in purchasing a painting by Corusius.”

“Really?”

I couldn’t help but respond to this unexpected good news.

To have such a stroke of luck and assistance appear.

Especially a proposition from the unpredictable Aileen, which made me suspicious.

“But, you have to do one thing for me.”

As expected.

She reminded me that nothing in this world comes for free.

[Security Document Related to the Sand Mole]

The true birthday present from Camilla.

It was a stack of papers nestled at the bottom of the box.

[First appeared 24 years ago, at the Count of Ferny’s estate]

[Since then, has been committing thefts targeting the prestigious noble families of the West.]

[Most crimes were committed alone…]

“Tch, this is useless.”

As Luciana flipped through the pages, she soon crumpled the paper in disappointment.

The report was consistently the same.

The Sand Mole always acted alone. There was no mention of any accomplice.

“Why are you dissatisfied when I’ve given you top secret information?”

Camilla also showed her displeasure at Luciana’s reaction.

“There’s nothing about Frost Mane.”

“You asked for information on the Sand Mole.”

Watching Luciana make such an absurd request, Camilla sighed lightly behind her fan.

‘After all, Frost Mane only started his activities recently, so there’s hardly any reliable information.’

But one thing was clear.

Luciana’s target was not the Sand Mole but Frost Mane.

A crease formed on Camilla’s brow.

“Then why on earth did you ask for information on the Sand Mole?”

“You don’t need to know.”

Just as she was about to dismiss it, Luciana changed her mind.

Camilla is a blood relative of the Western Duke of Roberk.

In other words, a person skilled in catching criminals.

With her help, it might be possible to catch him.

“The Sand Mole and he are colleagues.”

“What? Is that true?”

Camilla’s brows furrowed at the unexpected news.

“Yes. Frost Mane and the Sand Mole appeared at the same place at the same time. Plus, he admitted it himself.”

A cold smile appeared on Luciana’s face.

“So I requested the information on the Sand Mole, but the information I really wanted isn’t here. Did you know he came up north? This is all old news. Even a noble lady knows facts that the Duke of Roberk’s top secrets don’t cover. Perhaps it’s time to reassess the value of your so-called top secrets.”

“Lady Speda…! Have you said your piece?”

-Crack.

A scream echoed from the fan Camilla held.

Luciana’s eyes gleamed with a cold light.

The pride of the family.

It was sometimes a useful tool in eliciting cooperation from others.

“It seems you’re upset. Then, prove me wrong, if you can.”

If she’s called the treasure of the North,

Then she too was a talent known as the scorpion of the West.

Camilla soon twisted the corner of her mouth.

“Ha… I guess I have to reconsider the terms of our deal.”

“I’ll accommodate as much as possible. Anything but handing over Frost Mane.”

After provocation, comes the carrot.

The groundbreaking condition also changed the look in Camilla’s eyes.

“Ho. If you go that far. Appearance?”

“It’s meaningless. He was shrouded in shadows, likely using some artifact.”

“Hmm. Then it would be hard to distinguish him by appearance.”

A situation where we have to investigate based solely on speculation, without clear evidence.

“Well, leave it to me. When have I not done so? I’ve caught someone with just a montage before.”

Camilla Roberk confidently said with a broad smile.

Profiling.

A technique that deduces the identity of the culprit based on a few revealed characteristics.

It was a discipline that began in the West, and also Camilla’s specialty.

“Associates with the Sand Mole. That narrows down the range of suspects considerably.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s simple.”

Camilla continued, fluttering the newspaper about the Sand Mole as if to show it off.

“He has been active in the West continuously. Moreover, he preferred to work alone. But then he suddenly shows up in the North with a companion?”

Luciana could grasp Camilla’s intent through the speculation based on the Sand Mole’s usual behavior.

“So, does that mean Frost Mane is from the West?”

“Exactly. That alone narrows it down somewhat.”

Though it’s true anywhere, outsiders are often viewed unfavorably, and this is especially true in the North due to the locals’ inherent insularity.

‘Even looking at myself, I too looked at Hans through prejudiced eyes.’

Hence, outsiders are exceedingly rare.

This alone significantly narrowed down the list of suspects.

“And it must be someone who moved here recently. The Sand Mole. It was only recently that he managed to breach our family’s defenses.”

From the West, and recently moved.

Why did a man known for his sharp wit and sly smile suddenly come to mind?

Luciana’s eyebrows quivered.

Camilla’s keen eyes did not miss this.

“What’s wrong? Got any guesses?”

“No. Just distracted by a foolish thought. Don’t mind me and continue with the analysis.”

Hans as Frost Mane. Even to her, it sounded like a poor joke.

Why would Hans, a servant of the Speda family, engage in petty thievery?

“The culprit is likely a noble, or someone close to one. The fact that he was never caught by the guards after the incident implies that he had prior access to the security plans. You said no collaborators were found in the investigation, right?”

However, as the speculation continued, the ominous feeling only grew.

“And since the nobles of the North are not quick to accept outsiders, to have such quick access to that information, one could surmise… they might be a prospective strategic marriage partner, or someone working as a servant or maid.”

If her speculation was correct, Hans would fit all those criteria.

“Lady Roberk, do you know a Hans Byron?”

“Hans Byron..? The fact that he has a surname suggests nobility, but I’ve never heard of him.”

That couldn’t be.

The man who had bested her twice.

It’s embarrassing to say, but she was recognized for her strength in the North, even earning the nickname “the treasure of the North,”

And yet, he’s claimed to have made no name for himself in the West, his own territory?

‘Was he disregarded just because I’m from the humble Baron Hans’s family?’

However, Luciana soon shook her head, dismissing her own speculation.

After all, with Hans’s level of martial prowess, he would be recognized anywhere.

Even though not as much as in the North, in the West, where there’s a need for personnel to detain criminals, martial power is an important factor in assessing a person’s worth.

“…Did he suddenly become stronger when he met me in the North? Or had he hidden his true strength until he came here, unnoticed by anyone?”

“What are you talking about?”

Despite Camilla’s question, Luciana didn’t have the leisure to respond.

Perhaps, having received many favors from him and having grown close over time, her vision was blurred, preventing her from seeing his true nature.

‘Come to think of it, Frost Mane also effortlessly blocked my sword when I first encountered him, as naturally as water flows.’

Even she, a noblewoman, had never heard of an artifact that could change one’s appearance.

Once doubts began, they only expanded uncontrollably.

Since Hans was the one she had sparred with the most, he was the only one capable of comfortably receiving her abilities.

“Lady Speda!”

“…Oh. I was lost in thought. My apologies.”

To Camilla, it was odd that Luciana, who had been focused on identifying the culprit, kept drifting off into her own thoughts.

A strange intuition struck her like lightning.

‘Was it when the name Hans Byron came up?’

“Wait, Hans Byron… I remember now. I read about him in the newspaper. Isn’t he the one who defeated you in the martial arts tournament?”

He’s from a modest family in the West.

And he came over as a servant.

Indeed, he fit most of her deductions, a likely suspect.

“If he’s suspicious, why not investigate?”

“No, that can’t be.”

However, Luciana knew how hollow her obligatory denial sounded.

The doubt had already taken deep root.

She felt an intuition that the discomfort wouldn’t go away until she was certain he wasn’t involved.

“Well, I heard he’s your servant. It would be funny for me to meddle in your affairs.”

She resumed her analysis, but it didn’t reach Luciana’s ears.

Anticipating this, Camilla whispered softly.

“Hey, are you listening?”

“……”

“Lady Speda, if I may offer a piece of advice.”

Camilla had seen many criminals and thrown them into the magic stone mines.

Among them, of course, were those who committed heinous crimes without reason, but isn’t it said that there’s always a reason behind human actions?

Such cases were merely a fraction.

In over 80% of crimes, the perpetrator was someone familiar who exploited the victim’s trust.

“Don’t trust people too much. It hurts more when such a person stabs you in the back.”

With that said, she expected Luciana to make a wise decision.

After all, she was the perfect noblewoman and the treasure of the North, known for her cool-headedness.

***

“Who’s talking behind my back?”

I suddenly rubbed my ticklish ears.

Was it because I had been driving the servants hard to prepare the perfect birthday celebration?

“There seem to be many who would want to speak ill of you. Starting with me right in front of you.”

“What an unfortunate thing to say. I do have feelings, you know. I’m hurt.”

“As if demons care.”

Elizabeth snorted and then turned her back on me.

“Where are you going?”

“To the drawing room. I need to greet the other nobles. The invited guests should be arriving soon.”

Indeed, she was right.

From afar, carriages began to appear one by one near the mansion’s main gate.

“Why not go check it out? There might be many who covet you.”

“Are you referring to me?”

“As the man who defeated the treasure of the North in the martial arts tournament, your worth is proven.”

I awkwardly scratched the back of my head.

Apparently, the fame garnered from winning the martial arts tournament was immense.

“Well, regardless of what conditions they propose, I won’t be going.”

“I suppose so. You even ignored my engagement.”

Bickering with each other, they soon arrived at the drawing room.

Luciana was also about to enter the drawing room with someone.

“Lucy!”

“Liza, and Hans too…”

Was it a mistake?

Luciana turned her head swiftly upon seeing my face, focusing only on Elizabeth.

…Well, it makes sense. There’s no reason to show excessive familiarity with a servant in front of other nobles.

“Hmm. So that’s Hans.”

The person in question, Camilla, was just as she appeared in the games.

As a central figure in the Western story, it was a somewhat pleasant surprise.

“It’s an honor to meet the lady of the great House of Roberk.”

I bowed deeply with proper etiquette, and Camilla waved her hand dismissively.

“Such formalities are unnecessary. It’s somewhat burdensome to receive them from someone who has elevated the honor of the West in the North.”

“Not at all. Here, I am merely Lady Luciana’s exclusive servant, so it’s only right to show the same respect to Lady Roberk, who is a friend.”

Was it a misunderstanding?

For a moment, a sharpness flashed in her eyes.

“Your loyalty is remarkable. You really don’t have other intentions, do you?”

Her whisper, meant only for me, felt somewhat unsettling.

“What do you mean…?”

“Nothing. I was just curious if you had any thoughts of returning to the West.”

A simple scouting offer, perhaps.

“As Lady Luciana’s exclusive servant, I am focused on fulfilling my duties. I have no plans to return to my homeland at this time.”

“I hope it lasts till the end.”

Seemingly indifferent, she headed towards the drawing room without much attachment, as if okay with whatever outcome.

I shrugged off the surprisingly mild attempt at persuasion and joined Luciana.

“Lady Luciana, this way, please. The maids have finished their preparations.”

It was her birthday, after all, and I had taken great care in preparing everything.

From the outfit to makeup and hairstyling.

Not only did I select the best people for each area, but I also invited some, ensuring that her beauty would be enhanced in every detail, making her appearance even more perfect.

“…Should I go to the dressing room?”

“Yes, I will guide you…”

“No, that’s alright. It’s my house, so I know where it is. You go on and do what you need to do with the other servants.”

As always, I was waiting to guide her, so her unexpected response took me by surprise.

“Liza, can you keep me company for a bit?”

“Of course.”

The place where I was supposed to be had been unexpectedly taken by a rolling stone.

-Hehe.

Elizabeth’s annoying expression, shown only to me with a silent movement of her lips, was truly infuriating.

However, Luciana’s attitude, which was different from usual, did not stop with just the preparation of the outfit.

“Lady Luciana, the maids have finished their preparations.”

“I said I would handle it myself.”

Thinking it was all over, I found Luciana in the dressing room colder than ever.

Just like when we first met.

“I came here as I pleased since you said to handle it myself. After all, I am your exclusive servant.”

Luciana did not allow my cheeky attempt to casually stand by her side, as I always do.

“So it seems. My command must have been ambiguous. For at least my birthday, you are stripped of your exclusive servant rights.”

In other words, she was telling me to get lost.

Both Elizabeth and I stiffened at her decisive and cold words.

Even the glances exchanged carried a strange hostility.

“Are you making me repeat myself?”

“…I will obey your command.”

There was no doubt.

The cold and sharp aura, like a honed blade, was definitely directed at me.

I could feel my fingertips grow cold.

‘What’s going on?’

From the morning I met her in the garden to the current time, which was a bit early to call lunch.

I could tell that something had happened in that short period to drive a wedge between us.

There were no system messages, nor were there any quests, but her attitude was undeniably clear.

“…I’ll start figuring it out from now.”

Just then.

The perfect piece of evidence fell into my hands.

Thanks to changing into a dress for socializing, her cloak, which was now easier to retrieve, caught my eye.

Something metallic shimmered faintly inside it.

First Stage.

Hyun-soo deliberately tried a method others hadn’t tried.

It was because he needed to maximize and demonstrate the effects of the artifacts he had created over the last 10 days.

And the gauntlet he invested all his effort in was hastily made for hunting stone golems.

“Rowen, thank you for the ten million won.”

Rowen had not yet donated because he hadn’t disclosed information.

Hyun-soo’s statement was a pressure to keep his promise.

“Mr. Hyun has made an interesting proposal. He plans to sell the three artifacts he created through a live auction. The live auction starts now.”

Hyun-soo then revealed the information about the artifacts.

***

Open chat room in Kakkaotalk named Gongwoody.

Gongwoody means ‘The Friendship of Archers Until It Dies.’

The chat room included many renowned archer players from South Korea.

-“That gauntlet seems interesting.”

-“It extends the shooting range from 250m to over 400m, wow.”

-“Looks like a gauntlet that significantly increases strength stats.”

The Gongwoody chat room became noisy after the broadcast of the gauntlet.

-“A live auction, huh? Trying to make the viewers compete?”

-“But that’s only possible if the artifacts are good. The blacksmith named Hyun seems too arrogant.”

-“Right, a strength gauntlet that increases range is good. But if it only boosts strength massively and the other effects are useless, isn’t it essentially valueless?”

-“Exactly. The grade matters, but what’s the point if it’s just a high-grade but common unique item?”

-“And gauntlets or gloves are usually secondary items for archers, right?”

At that moment.

The information about the gauntlet was revealed.

(Hyun’s Ninth Custom-Made Gauntlet)

Grade: Unique

Durability: 7,000/7,000

Defense: 220

Restriction: No restriction for the creator, level 80 or higher archers

Special Abilities:

· Strength increases by 111.

· Bow accuracy increases by 15%.

· Arrow critical hit chance increases by 10%.

· Active skill: Precise Aim.

Description: Hyun’s ninth custom-made gauntlet significantly increases strength, thereby greatly enhancing range, penetration, and destructive power.

At the moment of revelation, an archer exclaimed in admiration.

-“Wow… this is amazing.”

He was Han-seop, the 87th-ranked archer.

-“It’s not just about increasing strength, but the defense is 220!”

Ironically, smart players attack archers’ hands during combat.

To prevent them from shooting arrows easily, so defense is a critical attribute.

-“Wow, a secondary item with such effects. And none of them are useless for an archer, amazing… even the level restriction is low…”

Secondary items refer to gloves, accessories, etc. Their performance is usually inferior compared to main armor or swords.

But this secondary item had effects as good as main armor.

-“And it even takes care of the strength stat increase by 111… wow…”

Strength stat increase by 111.

Archers typically have very low strength.

They usually invest in agility and vitality.

Agility increases effects like bow accuracy and penetration.

But that doesn’t mean strength is unnecessary.

Agility is preferred, but the increased penetration and destructive power from strength, and the extended range, are also significant.

An additional 111 strength stats are almost like focusing all stats of 20 levels into strength.

-“But why is everyone so quiet?”

Han-seop felt something was off.

The chat room that was active just a moment ago had gone silent.

Their names could be found in an unexpected place.

***

Hyun-soo waited patiently.

‘Ask, ask, ask,’ he thought to himself.

Soon, the effects of his anticipation became evident.

-I’m interested in buying it.

-The 15th ranked archer, Koru…?

-I’m also interested. I’ll pay 1.5 times the market price if you sell it to me.

-Wow, even Hansen, ranked 4th, is here…?

-What are you guys doing here?

Quickly, the chat room filled with the nicknames of well-known archers from Korea.

The number of viewers kept rising.

-I want to buy it.

-Me too!

-Mr. Hyun, please sell it to me 🥺

Hyun-soo responded with a small smile.

“The starting bid is 10,000 gold.”

10,000 gold, equivalent to ten million won, a substantial sum. However, it was relatively low considering its actual value.

But Hyun-soo knew the bids would keep rising.

“The auction will end when this live broadcast concludes.”

Immediately, the bidding heated up.

-15,000.

-20,000.

-22,000 here.

-22,500.

-What am I even watching…?

-What are these top-ranked archers doing here…?

Hyun-soo calmly managed the situation.

“Please send your bids to Hyun’s Blacksmith Forge via private message.”

Then…

-Rowen has donated 10,000,000 won.

-Oh, it’s unique.

Hyun-soo gave a wry smile. Then, the second stage began.

The rule for the second stage was straightforward.

It involved raiding two boss monsters alone.

‘The second artifact turned out to be a flop.’

Hyun-soo frowned in disappointment.

Regrettably, the second artifact wasn’t very effective.

In fact, it was the worst among all the artifacts he had made so far.

Hyun-soo faced the monster that appeared before him.

-Devolved Troll Lv.121

Trolls are typically high-level monsters above level 270.

Although the devolved trolls here were much weaker than real trolls, their regenerative abilities made them challenging opponents.

And he had to face two of them.

‘The second item is pretty mediocre.’

Hyun-soo looked at the approaching trolls with a hint of regret.

Fortunately, he could still hunt effectively using such artifacts.

Hyun-soo was now level 80 and had become much stronger since the Super Rookie Tournament.

Thanks to the swordsmanship of King Barad and the overall stat increase from crafting.

Then, Hyun-soo revealed the information about the artifact.

(Hyun’s Tenth Custom-Made Greatsword)

Grade: Common

Durability: 4,000/4,000

Attack Power: 286

Restriction: No restriction for the creator, level 70 or higher swordsmen

Special Abilities:

· Attack and movement speed decrease by 15%.

· Strength increases by 6, vitality by 3.

· Active skill: Swift Slash.

Description: Hyun’s tenth custom-made greatsword, unfortunately, received unintended penalties.

-Huh? What? Isn’t this too different from the first artifact?

-…? Proves Hyun was just lucky before…

-The first was unique and the second is common?

-Even ordinary blacksmiths can make this. It’s disappointing that Hyun made this.

-Agreed…

-Were all the previous auction items just the best of the best he made? 😂

The chat room atmosphere quickly subdued again. But Hyun-soo charged forward.

He clashed with the two devolved trolls.

Rowen, watching him, was deeply disappointed.

Not because Hyun-soo couldn’t hunt the trolls.

The troll hunt was going well.

Rowen had hoped for something else.

‘Maybe he could be the world’s number one blacksmith.’

He thought so when he saw the first gauntlet.

World’s top blacksmith, Smith.

“Somehow, he is a blacksmith unaffected by chance.”

And the only one who had broken the mold by crafting legendary artifacts, a feat no user had achieved.

‘The world’s best blacksmith, though much is hidden about him.’

But Rowen had not found such a person despite recruiting hundreds.

‘Hyun is no different.’

The huge gap between his first and second creations.

It was evidence that Hyun couldn’t match Smith.

[Bill: Guild Master, how much should we offer as a contract fee?]

[Rowen: I think 2 billion would be sufficient.]

It was an incredibly high amount.

The only regret was that it didn’t meet Rowen’s expectations.

“With that level of skill, he can’t close the gap with our guild, no matter how hard he tries.”

There’s a natural difference between those who have been there from the start and latecomers.

Then, Rowen looked at the greatsword’s information again, puzzled.

He had missed something in his disappointment.

“What’s this?”

The greatsword’s description read:

‘Unintentionally received penalties?’

***

Five days earlier.

Hyun-soo listened to the notifications that came after he crafted the second artifact.

[It’s of Epic grade.]

[You have crafted an artifact using Divine Customization crafting for the second consecutive time.]

[By crafting an artifact using Divine Customization consecutively without a break, you receive a penalty.]

[The artifact’s grade will drop by two levels, and its effects will be significantly reduced.]

“…What?”

Hyun-soo frowned.

Like the title of ‘God Blacksmith’ suggests, there are penalties in Ares unknown to players.

Hyun-soo understood why this penalty occurred.

‘Is this telling me not to take the easy route?’

His initial plan was somewhat derailed.

It wasn’t due to a lack of skill.

The greatsword was indeed well-crafted, and even the notification said it was of Epic grade.

But due to the penalty, it turned out to be of a common grade.

‘It’s okay, even if the second artifact isn’t great.’

He thought differently.

‘Wouldn’t the impact be greater if I make a big hit with the third one?’

There was a condition, though. The third artifact had to be truly exceptional.

‘I never intended to use Divine Customization for the third one anyway.’

The three artifacts Hyun-soo was crafting were all meant to unleash their full power in each stage of the time-attack dungeon.

‘For the third one…’

It was intended for hunting the boss monsters that would appear. He decided to craft this artifact after a conversation he had with his father.

During their trip to Jeju Island, his father spoke while looking at the vast sea.

“Hyun-soo, our country also has a legendary bow.”

A smile formed on Hyun-soo’s lips.

With five days remaining.

Hyun-soo quickly started crafting.

And he completed it.

[You have crafted an artifact closest to legendary.]

One of the bows from Korea’s legends.

***

Rowen. Tae-hyun headed to the meeting room.

He didn’t feel it was worth his time to watch the current broadcast of ‘Crazy Rookie’.

Then, upon entering the meeting room, Tae-hyun saw the broadcast on the TV.

“The second stage was pretty well done?”

“Crazy Rookie is incredibly strong.”

Crazy Rookie in the monitor was preparing for the third stage.

As Tae-hyun sat down, everyone hushed.

“It’s okay, watch it,” Tae-hyun reassured.

He wasn’t too strict as a guild master. Then, a question arose.

“What’s the third stage about?”

A female colleague explained.

“13 werewolves appear.”

“Werewolves?”

Tae-hyun frowned.

Werewolves were level 138 monsters.

Not boss-level, but still a challenge for someone under level 100 to face 138 werewolves.

“Normally, it’s impossible to hunt them, their hides are too thick even for players of the same level. The goal for the third stage is to break through and reach a destination within 300 meters unharmed.”

“Hmm.”

Tae-hyun nodded thoughtfully, watching Crazy Rookie prepare for the third stage.

-Why isn’t he moving?

-Huh? What’s he doing?

-The werewolves will be out soon.

In a massive Colosseum-like place.

There were thirteen cages.

The iron bars of the cages, holding thirteen werewolves, started lifting.

“Why isn’t he moving?”

“He should be running now.”

Tae-hyun asked.

“What are the chances of success?”

“Usually, 80% die on the way and 20% barely make it.”

Tae-hyun also looked puzzled at Crazy Rookie.

Then, in the monitor, he spoke.

-I’m going to try a special strategy for the third stage.

A special strategy? What could it be?

The iron bars opened, and thirteen ferocious werewolves burst out.

Rowen, watching Crazy Rookie, realized his strategy.

‘Is he planning to hunt all thirteen werewolves?’

No, that’s impossible.

He might be strong, but that’s nonsensical.

Then, he drew a bow from his cloak and aimed at the werewolves.

[Two artifacts closest to legendary meet.]

[Their effects improve by 10%.]

Rowen stood up. The bow, taut with tension, had inscriptions.

‘A Thousand-Pound Bow…?’

Suddenly, an arrow shot by him hit the leading werewolf.

Whoosh-

The arrow’s power made the werewolf stagger, but the level difference was too great.

The werewolf, mocking him, prepared to charge again.

Then.

[A thousand pounds of weight is applied.]

[A crushing weight bears down.]

Boom-

The ground under the werewolf collapsed.

Its feet sunk into the ground as if someone was pushing it down from above.

Crash-

The ground crumbled, and the werewolf was buried inside.

Yes, as if burdened by a thousand pounds of weight.

Prev I TOC I Next

Being a ducal family, there was a lot to prepare for a birthday celebration befitting their status. Garden maintenance, food preparation, internal cleaning and decoration, weapon maintenance, checking the guest list…. From the crack of dawn, the servants were busy with their respective duties. For these commoners, it was a day when high nobles, seemingly unreachable, gathered like clouds. It was natural to be doubly careful than usual. And I, supervising them, was also twice as busy.

“Hurry up! Clean thoroughly so there’s not a speck of dust!”

“Are the vegetables prepared? We need to prepare them in advance so we can cook and serve immediately! Aren’t you doing it fast enough?!”

“The hunting equipment repair is perfect. Just in case, let’s stock up on some more arrows.”

The roles of footman and maid are truly tough. As the person in charge of managing the servants, every little flaw of theirs directly reflects on us. Of course, they must be more physically tired. But I’m not someone with multiple bodies, controlling several people is killing me.

Of course, there were some who did their jobs well, but most of them were not satisfying to my eyes.

“Phew, this work never ends.”

“Come on. It’s okay to do just enough. You’re too meticulous.”

I shrugged off my colleague’s comment with a response. There is no room for compromise. It’s Luciana’s birthday, at least the parts I’m responsible for must be perfect.

“Let’s see. Most of it is done now, I just need to check the garden and Friede’s condition.”

Friede will bite my hem if it’s hungry, it will let me know.

“Now that I think about it, it’s unfair. While someone is busy working.”

Moreover, that guy will be eating luxurious food prepared for Luciana’s birthday. And not only that, but the noble children guests will find him cute and give him lots of snacks.

“The life of a dog is better than mine, seriously.”

Grumbling, I headed towards the garden, and a familiar face caught my eye. A girl, gracefully strolling in the garden, holding an umbrella of the same pink as her hair.

It was Elizabeth.

“It’s still quite early compared to the official invitation time. Why have you come so early?”

“Is it strange to come early to see one’s fiancé?”

…What? That reaction. When I showed a lukewarm expression, she too, with a smile on her face, just pursed her lips.

– L u c y

Only after using lip-reading skills did I realize her intention, and then I could see Luciana, who was tending to flowers beyond the bushes.

…She’s doing it herself? Normally, as it is the ducal family’s garden, there would be someone in charge of managing it. It was unexpected, especially because I had never seen her like this before.

“Countess Frontal visiting so early because of me! I’m so embarrassed I don’t know what to do with myself.”

“It seems you were also waiting, somewhat. I’m glad.”

I’m someone who lies as easily as breathing, and she, being a born noble, there was no awkwardness in our conversation. However, both of us were not looking at each other. Both Elizabeth’s and my gaze were fixed on the silver-haired girl far away, deeply engrossed in a rose.

“…Ah, how beautiful. Indeed, Lucy.”

“Haha, the roses of the west are as beautiful as rubies.”

I nudged her to caution her. But, even disregarding Elizabeth’s recklessness, I couldn’t help but agree. Her, with her eyes closed, enjoying the scent of the flower, contrasted so much with her usual cold image, making her seem even more beautiful.

-Thud.

Suddenly, I felt a pressure on my side. Elizabeth, she nudged me with her elbow. By then, Luciana had turned our way.

“Oh, Liza. It seems your fiancé is distracted.”

“……Haha.” Just as she failed to keep her mouth shut, I also failed to cut off the conversation appropriately. Luciana, with a faint smile, left the flowers behind and walked towards us.

“I would also warmly welcome Hans.”

“Lucy, stop with the bad jokes. What about your engagement to the crown prince?”

“Hmm. As I thought, you’re no fun to tease. If it were Hans, he would’ve retorted in a fuss.”

Certainly, the usual me would have made a fuss, asking if you’d be satisfied only if I were sent to the gallows. However, in a situation like a moment ago… honestly, I’m not sure. I might have hesitated. “Because it’s my favorite, right? Because it’s my favorite?”

I thought I had built up quite an immunity over time, but Luciana, buried in the flower garden……… was quite strong. Strong enough to break me down.

“Isn’t that right? If not, I’m also willing to accept it. Were you serious, my dear?”

Fortunately, she threw that joke after I barely managed to compose myself. I snapped back to reality at the hint of playfulness at the corner of her mouth.

“What are you saying? I’m such a coward that I’m even scared of the thorns on roses.”

“For a man who constantly takes reckless challenges to say that… I find it hard to believe.”

Luciana smiled slyly and turned her back. “Then, I shall step back and not be a disturbance. Have a good time, both of you.”

It was a storm-like entrance and exit. Elizabeth covered her mouth and mumbled in a daze. “She had that side to her too. To playfully tease me so openly.”

She looked pathetic. With a face so enchanted and foolishly happy. She seemed immensely moved as a devout follower.

“Get a grip. The lady has already left.”

“Hmph. That’s my line. Where did you put your mind? You almost got us both caught!”

I can’t argue with that. It’s entirely my fault for being so captivated and lost in thought.

“I admit it. It was my greed. It was too delicious to resist.”

When I brought up a story only she would understand, Elizabeth’s face hardened instantly. “…Demons are really incomprehensible.”

Afraid of being overheard, she lowered her voice as much as she could and grumbled. “At this rate, won’t I get caught before fulfilling the promise I made to you?”

“Rest assured, my lady. I have lived in the human world longer than you think. I have never been caught once.”

It was a secret that I was originally human and thus couldn’t be apprehended as a demon.

“Besides, hasn’t Lady Frontal already obtained half of what she desired?”

“…What?”

“If she’s asking favors from other noble, I presume you’ve moved beyond the position you originally held.”

It didn’t take long for her face to turn pale.

“How did you…?”

How would I know. The last time with the Bathory case, and now with the Yeti case, it was clear. Even if Luciana is a genius, there are times when she can’t defy the irrational. Besides, she is… ‘like a magnet for trouble.’

She never just avoids trouble; she seems restless if she’s not confronting it head-on. For someone like me who wants to live a long and slender life, such a risk factor should be kept at a distance. But her life is my life. That’s a fact stated in the status window. Who knows if she might encounter a high-ranking demon like Bathory if I’m not there. That’s why, right after that fight, I took at least the minimum measures to be able to help her immediately.

“There’s always a way to know everything. The world is full of useful magical tools.”

“You! Did you put a listening device on her?”

Precisely, along with a listening device, I also attached a return stone to her cloak. So she could be transported immediately if she was in danger.

“Are you crazy! What if you get caught?”

“If you don’t get caught, that’s the end of it. No problem.”

As long as the retrieval is done perfectly, it will remain a perfect crime, but now I have to stay by her side for a while, so I should start detaching it soon.

“Let’s put aside minor problems. The important thing is that you just need to trust and follow my words.”

I looked at Elizabeth and curled the corners of my mouth.

Regardless, it would be troublesome if emotions ahead of the plan ruined it.

After all, we are in a cooperative and allied relationship. A little tit for tat is fine, but I can’t indulge in a power struggle. So, now might be the right time to bend her will a little.

“Then you won’t need to be impatient, and you’ll get closer and closer to Lady Luciana, moving beyond a relationship of follower and idol to an equal footing.”

“Tch.”

Elizabeth clicked her tongue and was the first to walk away.

“It’s not that I trust you. I’m just satisfied with the results achieved so far.”

“Of course.”

I stared blankly at her umbrella. The faintly visible coral. If she went to the extent of modifying her staff into an umbrella to bring it here, she must have really liked it.

“…Did you notice?”

“I have emotions, and you have your relationship with the lady. Even just watching will seal the deal.”

The coral staff.

That’s the sign of our complicity.

***

Luciana recalled the incident a little earlier. For her, public attention was a given. Being the foremost noble in the north, the envious looks she received had become so familiar that they no longer affected her. But this time was different. The dazed look in the servant boy’s eyes.

Where had his usual mischievousness gone?

‘It was the same as other people’s eyes.’

As if looking up to her.

Whether it’s her appearance or her family. Those who adored her without really knowing her. The funny thing was, she felt quite pleased with that fact. Because she could expect greater loyalty from Hans for admiring her? No. It wasn’t just for such calculative reasons, she vaguely realized. The real reason she felt good was…

“Hey, Speda. Are you listening?”

“Sorry, Lady Roberk. I was distracted for a moment. Could you repeat that?”

The sharpness returned to her eyes, which had softened momentarily. It was time to set aside personal feelings. She couldn’t afford to be rude to a guest who had come from afar to deal with her.

“You getting distracted, that’s rare.”

Luciana’s deep-set eyes, reminiscent of the clear northern skies, captured her counterpart. With her green hair cascading down to her waist and those deep purple eyes that seemed to draw one in. Camilla Roberk, the young lady of the Roberk ducal family, representing the west and heavily inheriting its symbol, spoke. Every movement of her delicate fingers was quite enchanting.

“I want to change the terms of our deal.”

“Hmm? I thought it was a mutually beneficial condition. Surprising.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll still give you the information about the sand mole you want.”

How could she not be concerned? It meant changing the terms demanded by the Roberk ducal family. It might drag her into realms beyond her authority, so she was on guard.

“…Let’s hear it first before deciding. What do you want?”

“Nothing much. Rather, it might be easier than before.”

Roberk twisted a lock of her hair, resembling a palm leaf.

“Handing over the sand mole after capturing him? I don’t even expect that. We’ve been after him for decades but failed.”

So, the compensation Luciana offered was a far-fetched idea. Camilla Roberk was saying that.

“I’d rather make a different proposal.”

“Speak.”

“Isn’t there a famous thief recently in this area? His name was Frost Mane, wasn’t it?”

The moment she heard that name, Luciana felt her heart sink coldly.

“Public deeds must be covered with public actions. Although we missed the sand mole, capturing this new thief in the magic stone mine will help restore our diminished prestige.”

…This is a problem. That person’s custody belongs to her. After all, the reason she wanted the sand mole’s information was to deduce information about Frost Mane.

“I understand your intent. But let’s add one more condition.”

Luciana was tolerant about matters outside her interest.

“There’s no need to hand over the person. He’s mine.”

“What?”

“The thief from the north will be dealt with by the north. There’s no room for negotiation in this.”

But when it came to related matters, she could become extremely firm. She was a noble among nobles. Her possessiveness over her own things was second to none.

“Is that so typical of the north? Planning to execute him immediately?”

“You don’t need to know. He will just be dealt with according to the law. But in this process, I do expect… full cooperation from the west… publically.”

Camilla covered her mouth with her fan, watching Luciana.

A light probe to gauge the purpose, and a bit of an overreaction as a response.

‘I heard rumors about Frost Mane causing chaos in the north, seems like she got involved then?’

The famous ‘Treasure of the North’ being unexpectedly harsh piqued Camilla’s interest.

“Well, it’s a pity not to get a prisoner who could be sentenced to lifelong forced labor.”

Sparks flew between their eyes meeting each other. A brief, intense tension filled the private room. A nerve-wracking standoff over Frost Mane’s custody.

“Well, no need to obsess. As long as we publicly announce that we greatly helped in his capture, that’s all that matters. What we need right now is to restore our damaged prestige.”

But Camilla too was a blue-blooded noble. She didn’t push for more and was content with the pragmatic gain, backing down.

“Do check the gift box carefully, Lady Speda.”

There would be information about the sand mole in it.

Camilla smiled brightly as she folded her fan and extended her right hand. A noble smile that could be featured in an etiquette book.

“The deal is settled, then.”

“Let’s keep it friendly. Between fellow ducal families.”

With artificial smiles, they shook hands.

Determined to catch him and make him pay, Luciana’s eyes gleamed ominously.

After the interview broadcast ended, the broadcasting company sent Hyun-soo back.

Hyun-soo immediately headed to the forge.

‘Rowen…’

Black Anvil Forge.

The top blacksmith guild in Korea.

With around 500 members, most of them were high-level blacksmiths.

That’s how rankings work.

The most outstanding guild attracts the most outstanding people.

In fact, Black Anvil was ranked first, monopolizing 40% of the country’s artifact sales market.

As Hyun-soo stood in the forge, he received a whisper message.

[Nel: I watched the broadcast, it was interesting. It’s great how Rowen is helping to promote your forge.]

[Hyun-soo: Indeed.]

It was a great opportunity for Hyun-soo.

[Nel: The three artifacts you’ll show on the broadcast will be crucial. Have you decided what to make?]

[Hyun-soo: Yes, I have.]

[Nel: Can I know what they are?]

[Hyun-soo: Repetitions.]

[Nel: Repetitions?]

[Hyun-soo: Yes, I plan to make artifacts that I’ve previously created under emergency production.]

[Nel: Ah…]

[Hyun-soo: Although they were made under emergency, they were all based on my knowledge. I have the designs ready, so I can start making them right away without any pause.]

[Nel: I see, and you know why Rowen gave you this mission, right?]

Hyun-soo chuckled.

[Hyun-soo: I’m aware.]

[Nel: Are you okay with it?]

[Hyun-soo: I don’t rely on automatic production.]

Hyun-soo was aware of the rumors about hastily made artifacts.

A user once uploaded a video comparing an artifact made in 10 days to one made in 3 days.

The 10-day artifact, made using automatic production, was significantly superior in effect and grade.

This was a clear case of the pitfalls of automatic production.

But Hyun-soo’s approach was different.

‘There’s nothing easier than remaking something you already know.’

Hyun-soo decided to focus on production.

[Hyun-soo: I don’t have much time, so I’ll start making them now.]

[Nel: Alright, good luck.]

Standing in front of the forge, Hyun-soo pondered.

He had made several artifacts through emergency production.

‘I can’t say I’ve put my best effort into them.’

Artifacts made in just tens of seconds.

Yet, their effectiveness turned out impressively well.

‘The time-attack dungeon is divided into three stages.’

He understood the broadcaster’s intention.

One artifact for each stage.

To prove their worth in the corresponding situation.

Hyun-soo decided on three artifacts, each suitable for a stage.

‘Let’s start with this one.’

[Starting Divine Customization.]

Hyun-soo quickly began his work.

***

The Ares community was buzzing.

[Black Anvil’s guild leader Rowen gave blacksmith Hyun a mission LOL.]

[For real?]

[Yeah, it’s in the preview of AJ Internet Broadcasting.]

[Wow, the preview has 70,000 views already?]

[Well, he’s ranked 41st in the country and called one of the top three craftsmen. And I heard Black Anvil is trying to recruit Hyun.]

[Haha!]

[But I feel like the mission is more about a showdown between Hyun and Rowen.]

[Agreed.]

[Same here.]

[Like they’re asking Hyun to prove himself?]

[And if he does?]

[Then Rowen will have to pay up, give him fame, and admiration.]

[And if Hyun fails?]

[Then his value might drop, he’s famous for being superior and special. If he’s not, then ordinary ranked blacksmiths might seem better.]

[Public execution LOL.]

[I bet on Rowen winning.]

[Me too.]

[Rowen is the guild leader of the top-ranked guild, even though he’s second in individual ranking. He must have anticipated this.]

[Indeed…]

At that moment.

Nel was hopeful.

‘The key is to attract many viewers to the live broadcast.’

That way, more people would be surprised and spread the word.

The problem was, even she couldn’t gauge the current interest in the preview.

But she found out about the response from nearby.

Spy(?) Nel heard from Rune, the master of Golden Shield Guild.

“I’m going to watch this broadcast too. It’s Hyun’s first official production request. And from what I heard, other rankers are also watching this time.”

Curiously, Nel asked.

“Why?”

“Hyun has been smashing all his production requests so far. Rankers are grinding their teeth saying, ‘Let’s see how good you make it.'”

“Ah…?”

Rune was also a member of a chat group with many high-ranking wizards.

“Wizard ranked 2nd, Brown, archer ranked 4th, Hansen, and the dwarf leg blacksmith guild leader. From what I heard, a lot of guild masters are planning to watch.”

And Nel saw it.

Simply by existing, Hyun’s forge subscriptions increased because of the Rowen incident.

***

“This should be enough.”

Hyun-soo smiled contentedly as he looked at the three artifacts he had crafted for the stages of the challenge.

He was aware that the broadcast time was drawing near.

‘I hope these three artifacts maximize our profits…’

Nel had mentioned that a significant number of top players might watch the broadcast.

The first step in selling these artifacts at a high price was to prove their value.

The next step was to maximize the value of those already proven.

A thought then flashed through Hyun-soo’s mind.

‘That’s it…’

A smile formed on Hyun-soo’s lips.

That idea would be enough, especially if the prideful top players were watching the broadcast, the impact would likely be maximized.

Soon, a notification appeared for Hyun-soo.

[You have received an invitation from AJ Internet Broadcasting.]

Hyun-soo was hopeful.

The more viewers the main broadcast attracted, the more impact it would have in promoting Hyun’s Forge.

‘The quality items are already prepared.’

That’s why the number of viewers was crucial.

Standing in front of the Time-Attack Dungeon, Hyun-soo could see the number of viewers in the top left corner.

[Current Viewers: 88,414.]

***

Producer Kim Min-woo was astounded.

“Crazy…?”

Viewership of 80,000.

Such numbers were only seen in the early days of the broadcast.

‘Was the impact that Rowen made that significant?’

-Blacksmith Hyun. I’m here to see if you made something good with my request.

-I’m here for that too LOL

-Me too… LOL Didn’t even get a reply.

‘No, it’s not just Rowen. The mystique surrounding Hyun also adds value.’

The real star here was the crazy rookie.

Soon, Producer Kim spoke to Hyun-soo away from the cameras with a puzzled expression.

“…You want to conduct a live auction?”

“Yes.”

“Of course, we’re fine as long as it draws viewers…”

Kim’s concern was singular.

‘What if it doesn’t live up to expectations and backfires?’

But the crazy rookie just smirked.

“Then, let them know I’ve approved, and I’ll proceed with it.”

“Ah, okay. We’re starting the broadcast now.”

The countdown began on the screen for the viewers.

-The broadcast is starting.

The crazy rookie and Blacksmith Hyun’s first broadcast began.

***

The viewers soon saw the crazy rookie entering the Time-Attack Dungeon.

Below him on the hill, a dense group of monsters around levels 80-100 was visible.

Producer Kim explained beside Hyun-soo.

“The first stage is simple. There are about 40 monsters below. The goal is to break through them and destroy the red gem placed on the opposite hill, 400 meters away.”

As the crazy rookie nodded, Kim added.

“For reference, the record holder, Prow, is currently 7th in the country’s combined rankings. His record is 1 minute and 23 seconds. It has never been broken. And our broadcast offers a prize. If someone breaks the total record, they win ten million won.”

A broad smile appeared on the crazy rookie’s face.

-He’s gone crazy after hearing about the money. LOL

-Oh, a capitalist player, I like honest players.

-What’s your guess on the time cut?

-The average for people on this show is 4 minutes, so maybe 3 minutes?

-The crazy rookie is wearing artifacts made by Hyun.

-Is Rowen watching this!!!?

-Yes.

-Why is he actually appearing?

-??? LOL

-Wow, Rowen actually showed up LOL

-I guess Rowen came to see what artifacts were made.

Finally, the countdown began in the Time-Attack Dungeon.

-Don’t they usually get ready to run?

-Yeah. The crazy rookie isn’t doing it?

All viewers wore puzzled expressions.

And the record details appeared on the top left corner for the viewers to see.

[Current Record Holder: Prow. 1 minute 23 seconds.]

-Wow, Prow’s record is always impressive, regardless of when you see it.

-LOL, how is that even humanly possible?

-That’s why he’s ranked 7th overall.

-Oh, it’s starting.

As the countdown ended, all the viewers expected Hyun-soo to spring into action. However, Hyun-soo remained silently standing in his spot. Then, he did something unexpected.

Click-

-Isn’t that the arrow from the last time?

The black arrow, used in the Super Rookie competition, was fitted into his bow. Hyun-soo then drew the bowstring with all his might, aiming at the gem 400 meters away.

-???

-Is he crazy?

-Is he serious?

He released the arrow with force.

Whoosh!

The arrow tore through the air but fell short of the gem, landing on the ground.

-What is he doing?

-Such a waste of time LOL

-Unbelievable LOL. Does he really think he can hit something 400 meters away?

-But it did go quite far. Maybe around 250 meters.

The viewers were endlessly puzzled by his bizarre action. Rowen, watching the broadcast, felt the same.

‘What in the world is he doing?’

The arrow lay futilely on the ground. Then, Hyun-soo murmured, “Retrieve.”

Swoosh-

On the screen, Hyun-soo looked as if he expected this, and Rowen’s brows furrowed.

Then, Hyun-soo on the screen announced, “I’ll reveal the first artifact.”

“Could it be…!” Rowen rose to his feet.

He put on a black gauntlet on his right hand.

Click-

He fitted the arrow into the bow again.

Click-

With the gauntlet on, he drew the bowstring with great force.

Twang-

The bowstring was pulled taut. And the changes brought by the worn artifact appeared on the viewers’ screens.

[Strength increases by 111.]

[Range significantly increases.]

[With the increased strength stat, penetration and destructive power are enhanced, and range is greatly extended.]

The moment Hyun-soo released the bowstring.

Whoosh!

The arrow flew with a piercing sound, penetrating the gem 400 meters away and shattering it.

Crash!

Rowen’s eyes widened as he saw the gem completely destroyed.

“Using the gauntlet to increase range and break it?”

At that moment, Rowen saw a notification pop up for Hyun-soo.

[Congratulations.]

[You have set a new record for Stage 1 of the Time-Attack Dungeon.]

[Your record is 41 seconds.]

The shock didn’t end there.

Rowen had placed a mission for Hyun-soo: 1 million won for Rare, 3 million for Epic, and 10 million for Unique.

Soon, Hyun-soo said, “Thank you for the 10 million won donation, Rowen.”

Rowen understood the meaning of those words.

“Unique…?”

Yes, that artifact was Unique.

A grade that 95% of blacksmith players never achieve in their lifetime.

“All of the mission’s bonus is yours. After all, I didn’t manage to accomplish anything.”

After the mission in the slums had ended, just before entering the royal palace, Linne stopped in her tracks and spoke with difficulty.

Julian turned his head to look at Linne’s face.

Their eyes met, but it was impossible to read any emotion on his face. As always, a smile was perched atop his narrowed eyes.

“Don’t say such things, Miss Linne. We’re fellow disciples, aren’t we?”

“I don’t like you.”

Linne said it outright.

There were many who disliked Julian, but few would openly express it.

Regardless of the overt hostility, Julian remained unchanged.

“That’s regrettable. We’re under the same master, after all. Huhu.”

“Just because we served the same master for a while doesn’t mean we’re the same. The master said that with power comes responsibility. But the power you wield carries no responsibility. Wouldn’t it be better if you exercised some restraint now?”

Remembering the overwhelming force shown against the demon just moments ago, Linne recalled her longstanding grievances.

Why act against the master’s teachings? Why desire the master’s death?

“Restraint is a virtue for cowards only.”

“Does that mean, you’re calling our master a coward?”

Insulting the master was intolerable.

Linne clenched her fists.

Her lips were bitten in rising anger, whether Julian knew she was angry or not, he casually said,

“Miss Linne, you really don’t understand the world.”

“What did you say?”

“Some people cannot afford to live a life of restraint.”

“That’s nonsense…”

Before she could finish, Julian had already made the first move.

“Anyway, you worked hard today. So, I’ll take this mission’s share.”

With a short laugh, Julian began walking toward the royal palace.

Watching his receding back, Linne frowned.

“A life that cannot afford restraint…”

It was a statement she couldn’t understand at all, considering the teachings of their master.

Linne’s mind grew heavy.

Indeed, he was someone she could neither understand nor wished to.

“Are you heading back?”

At that moment, she turned towards the voice asking her.

A man in a carriage was looking at her.

She smiled faintly at the familiar face.

“Uncle Ergen.”

Ergen Londebell

A member of the same Londebell family as herself, her father’s brother.

Greeted warmly by him, the carriage door opened.

“If you’re heading back to the mansion, let me give you a ride. Come on.”

“No, I’ll go alone…”

“No need to refuse.”

Refusing here would also be a nuisance.

Linne boarded the carriage.

As she quietly instructed the coachman, the carriage slowly began to move.

“Are you returning from completing a task for Sir Hayden?”

“Yes.”

“Did it go well?”

At the moment she was about to answer ‘yes’ to Ergen’s question, she suddenly realized that she had done nothing on this mission.

Even though it had ended well, it was embarrassing to simply agree positively.

“So-so.”

“That’s good to hear. Sir Hayden must have recognized your talent well. But, don’t overdo it.”

Ergen looked at Linne with a worried face.

“Sorry, it seems I’m needlessly nagging you.”

“Not at all, uncle.”

“But, the man you were with earlier… Don’t tell me it was Sir Julian?”

At the mention of that name, Linne’s face contorted momentarily before she regained her composure.

“Yes.”

“Recently, his actions have been causing the Senate a lot of anxiety. There are rumors that he submitted a review to the secretariat to pressure the Senate.”

It was hard to find anyone among the empire’s nobility who wasn’t interested in ‘Julian’.

It wasn’t strange for Ergen, a nobleman, to have such questions.

The dog of the royal family, infamous for all sorts of misdeeds.

His rise and fall were of interest to those in power, and many wanted to gossip about him.

Above all, being a noble yet a dog of the royal family, it was inevitable that he would attract attention.

“Putting pressure on the nobility’s Senate, despite being a noble himself. He’s an incomprehensible man.”

“Indeed.”

“Still, what you must be most cautious about is Julian himself.”

Ergen spoke softly, then took Linne’s hand and continued in a voice laden with concern.

“For whatever reason, do not get close to him. That man is far too dangerous. He’s the sword of the royal family who lacks any affection, not considering human relationships at all. A person the nobility should avoid.”

“Yes. I understand, uncle.”

“But, I do have some doubts.”

“Yes?”

“Why would Sir Hayden expel him, despite the rumors of his exceptional skills?”

Ergen mused with a hint of mockery in his voice.

“One might start to think he’s not as great a swordsman as the rumors suggest.”

“That’s…”

“Hm?”

“Not true.”

Linne flatly denied it.

A perfect sword path.

Calmness even in urgent situations.

The distribution of power was not used frivolously but was measured and restrained.

It was quite similar to the swordsmanship she idealized.

“Regardless of anything else, his swordsmanship is genuine. The master must have recognized it too and took him as a disciple.”

The insight to precisely strike the vital points of a demon without using aura, and the physical ability to achieve it.

Even though it was done ‘for fun,’ if one only looks at the ‘phenomenon,’ he had indeed slain a demon without using mana.

“He is strong.”

Much more than her.

She wanted to say more, but her pride stopped her.

***

“What exactly happened?”

After completing the mission in the slums,

I was reporting to Odwin, the leader.

What happened, indeed?

A myriad of thoughts flashed through my mind.

Did I make a mistake, perhaps?

Come to think of it, Odwin once felt doubtful just from the way I spoke.

“What are you talking about?”

“Weren’t you sent to the slum area to verify the suspicion of a demon appearance?”

“That’s correct, and it turned out to be true.”

“But why did a criminal come to confess his crimes? And he mentioned your name while doing so.”

Initially, I couldn’t grasp what Odwin was talking about.

However, after a moment of thought, I belatedly remembered encountering ‘Bayden’ in the slums. I had indeed told him to confess.

But to think he would actually confess so readily?

“He must have realized his crimes belatedly. He must have repented and decided to confess. I don’t know why my name came up there.”

Odwin gave me a doubtful look, but I ignored it. I brushed it off like that.

Anyway, Odwin or the royal family would handle the aftermath.

Odwin, who had been looking at me, sighed once and then slightly pushed a piece of paper towards me.

Another mission? This thought came to my mind, but it seemed not to be the case from the letters written at the top.

“It’s your mission compensation. Including the bonus for the two missions you’ve recently completed.”

Mission compensation.

In other words, my salary.

Unable to close my mouth after scanning the document detailing my salary, I was astounded.

“…11,000 Nar?”

The currency used in the Adratan Empire is ‘Nar.’ According to a website that briefly summarized the setting of “Let’s Kill the Demon Lord,” ‘Nar’ is said to have a value similar to

‘dollars’ on Earth.

So, 15,000 Nar means

‘My salary is 15 million won?’

Upon closer inspection, the part labeled ‘Closed Eye Salary’ didn’t have much amount written.

The reason for such a high salary was due to the method of calculating the bonus.

It was because of the two missions I had recently completed.

Moreover, Linne had given up her share of this mission to me.

“That’s impressive.”

I muttered to myself unconsciously at the astonishing salary.

Odwin nodded.

“Right?”

“Yes.”

“It’s less than usual. After all, you’ve had many days off this month due to injuries.”

I chuckled inwardly at her subsequent words.

Does this mean I usually receive more than this?

Julian was no ordinary person.

‘Royal family’s dog’ wasn’t a title anyone could hold.

After all, why would it be called a ‘royal exclusive agency’ for nothing?

The reason the Adratan Empire has remained intact until now is thanks to the overwhelming power of the royal family.

Considering that the Closed Eyes is a royal exclusive agency, it would be impossible to receive a low salary for the sake of the royal family’s reputation.

“Hm?”

While reading the salary statement, I suddenly noticed a section scribbled with a number along with a minus sign.

There, deductions attached to the salary were written.

[- Estate management fee]

[- Servants’ salaries]

Well, okay, I can understand that.

It wasn’t a huge amount.

[- Membership maintenance fee for the Imperial Art Association]

[- Subscription fee for the magazine, The Knights]

Hmm.

Yeah, I could understand up to this point.

I knew Julian liked art pieces and spent money on them.

But the subscription fee was too expensive.

[- Installment for ‘Fiancée’ porcelain from Donatien Atrium]

[- Installment for ‘Id Cosmos’ by the renowned artist Corusius]

What kind of madness is this?

Artists whose names would be recognized by any citizen of the empire.

The pieces purchased from their atriums were indeed exorbitantly priced.

As a result, the deduction section on the salary statement was filled with an absurdly high number.

[Net payment = 900 Nar]

Ultimately, what fell to me was 900 Nar.

Considering Julian’s noble status, an absurdly small amount remained.

‘Did this guy… save any money?’

Closing my eyes for a moment, the scene of the mansion filled with unnecessary antiques came to mind.

Living rooms and bedrooms plastered with artworks, and even the library.

‘Would he, this bastard.’

Suddenly, my head began to spin.

I was supposed to pick up the ‘moonstone’ I had ordered from the jeweler soon, but without money, that would be impossible.

‘I should borrow money from someone…’

No, ‘Julian’ wouldn’t do such a thing.

He would rather take on another mission or two to secure the funds.

“Sir Odwin.”

“Yes?”

“Do you have any more missions coming in?”

A look of surprise appeared in Odwin’s eyes.

“It’s the first time you’ve initiated such a conversation.

Unfortunately, there are none.”

At his reply, I sighed internally.

Julian Crypart Frason, the former disciple of the Sword Saint.

The empire’s smiling executioner, a ghost wearing a branding iron.

Julian, a man draped in various renowns, including infamy, never imagined that his path would be blocked by such materialistic reasons.

Survival 37

Prev I TOC I Next

After safely seeing off Master, a few days passed.

I returned to the daily life as a servant.

Though the work at the Duke’s house is abundant and hard, it seems humans are indeed creatures of adaptation.

After a few months, the routine became second nature to me.

“Good work today.”

“Yes, Lady Luciana, you’ve worked hard as well.”

Etiquette, dance, rhetoric, politics, swordsmanship…

Though my work is just behind-the-scenes, she had to take all sorts of lessons to maintain the demeanor of a noble lady.

“Miss, that’s not right. Lift the hem of the dress just enough to be grasped at the fingertips, about 3 inches, just showing the tip of the shoe.”

Experts with high pride in their field, famous for their reputation, were strict.

She’s even the future Crown Princess and Empress.

Naturally, the atmosphere in the lessons was extremely tense.

For me, I absolutely can’t do it. The rote learning I experienced in Korea was enough.

Then,

As Luciana, who finished today’s schedule, was heading to the library, she gestured to me.

“Go and rest then. It’s going to get busy soon.”

“Busy?”

“Oh, you came here just this year. You might not know.”

Luciana’s playful lips curled up slightly.

“…Hey? Are you listening?”

…Oops. I unwittingly stared blankly.

Whatever was so amusing, her faint smile directed at me was a bit harmful to my heart.

“My birthday is the last day of this month.”

And then, her following statement, was not a joke, but rather made my heart shrink.

“…Excuse me?”

“Not knowing your master’s birthday, what an unfaithful servant.”

I couldn’t have known.

In the game, there were events related to the birthdays of the protagonist and other characters, but nothing was mentioned about the villainess.

“I’m sorry!”

I bowed so deeply I almost hit my head on the floor.

But as she said, not knowing the birthday of a superior, especially as a dedicated servant, was close to a disgrace. Apart from the game, it was proper for me to know it by myself.

Not only that, but to actually say it out loud yourself.

“Hehe, it’s just a joke.”

Whether it’s unfortunate or fortunate, it seems she was just teasing from the start.

“Your flustered expression is always so refreshing.”

Pleased with her own prank, she rested her chin on her hand.

But a fleeting sadness flashed in her eyes.

“Anyway, my birthday is coming up, so both you and I will be busier. We won’t have much time for sparring for a while.”

“Miss, you too, cheer up. After your birthday, when things quiet down, why don’t you spend more time in the training hall under the excuse that you’ve been neglecting martial training?”

I tried not to show it, but my voice carried a hint of disappointment.

I slightly raised my head and added to the conversation.

Both exercise and martial arts share the trait of quickly losing proficiency if not practiced regularly.

She will probably be surrounded by nobles celebrating her birthday and focusing on socializing, so if she uses that excuse, others probably won’t be able to say anything.

Luciana’s eyes slightly curved in amusement.

“Always coming up with clever tricks, aren’t you? That’s a good idea.”

“Cunning? What harsh words. Let’s call it a justifiable reason.”

Then, I felt something tugging at the hem of my clothes.

“Friede seems hungry too. It’s time for you to go do your own work.”

“Overtime work is so tough…”

“Come on, just a little more effort.”

Friede, who had been following me around, managed to sneak into my room and wagged his tail.

He would’ve been fed in his own space, but he couldn’t resist and started to loiter around my room whenever it was mealtime.

They say animals grow quickly to adapt to the wild.

This guy was no exception.

The look of a newborn puppy?

Nowhere to be seen.

He had eaten like a pig and was already the size of a medium-sized dog.

-Grrr…

Well, he still looked cute when eagerly waiting for food,

‘But after getting his meal from me, he’ll just turn around and go back to his master’s room. Such an ungrateful creature.’

This clever guy clearly distinguished between the one who feeds him and his actual master.

“Eat this.”

After casually putting the monster raw meat I got from the kitchen into a bowl for Friede, I took out what I was going to eat from my pocket. It was a white herb root, reminiscent of ginseng. It was my biggest find from this expedition, the Frostroot.

In appearance, it wasn’t much different from what I had eaten before in the expedition.

[Thousand-Year Frostroot]

[Item Type: Elixir]

[An herb that took root absorbing the essence of snowfields. This particular specimen of Frostroot, over a thousand years old, would have never been found if not collected by human hands.]

[Consumption grants the skill ‘Essence of the Extreme’.]

However, its effects were on a different level.

As expected of an elixir obtained at the cost of my Master’s right arm and my left arm, the Thousand-Year Frostroot granted a whole skill just by consuming it!

“There’s no reason to hesitate eating it.”

I immediately put it in my mouth and chewed. The hard shell cracked, releasing a rich juice.

“What? It’s tastier than I thought.”

Instead of the expected bitterness, a refreshing minty flavor lingered on my tongue.

-…

Perhaps intrigued by the smell, Friede, who was also interested in the leafy part of the root I ate, sniffed around it. Then, uncharacteristically for a carnivore, he just gulped down the leaf.

“…Are you really a direwolf? Picking up and eating leaves off the ground?”

Despite my sarcastic remark, he ignored me, busily picking up the last fallen leaf and chewing it.

Creak-

Having finished his dessert, as if he had no more business there, Friede jumped and opened the door, effortlessly slipping out.

“I’m just a meal uncle and a servant, aren’t I?”

Sigh,

What’s the use of grumbling to a beast.

To check my gains, I quickly opened my status window to see the updated skill.

[Skill]

[A rank: Essence of the Extreme]

[The power imbued in the Thousand-Year Frostroot has settled within your body through consumption. Controlling and utilizing this power is the user’s responsibility.]

[When used, temporarily doubles the base agility stat, followed by a 3-day cooldown and a slight temporary decrease in agility stat.]

For reference, that effect was identical to the temporary boost I got from consuming the elixir.

It was like gaining a buff skill.

“Boosting base stats is always right.”

Moreover, unlike the Toad incident, this was related to my highest stat, agility, not one of my weaker stats.

Since my key skills like evasion and counterattack are influenced by the agility stat, this was truly icing on the cake.

“This expedition turned out to be quite fruitful.”

Although I paid the price with an injury to my left arm, and Perno lost his right arm.

But considering I gained the Thousand-Year Frostroot’s buff and a dagger specialized for counterattacks, it was a good result relative to the risk.

“Still, I need to lay low for a while.”

Even before the black market incident, the notoriety of ‘Frost Mane’ was spreading quietly in the underworld. After that, it spread throughout the northern nobility.

Fame, especially notoriety, has its advantages when high, but the disadvantages were greater.

I even had to import expensive healing potions to hide my injury.

Just by showing up, my activities and timing could reveal my identity, so for the time being, I’ll have to live as Hans Byron.

“Anyway, I’ll be busy due to Luciana’s birthday, so I’ll wait for the right moment to resume my activities.”

Fortunately, unless branded as a traitor or sworn enemy, notoriety decreases over time.

“By the time everyone starts to forget a little, it’ll be the right time to act.”

I casually lifted my leg and stomped down hard.

-Silent.

Despite the floor being carpeted, there was no sound, a curious feature.

This secret lay in the evolved stepping technique I mastered during the final showdown with Luciana.

[Skill]

[Ex rank: Stealth Incarnate]

[Exclusive skill for the Thief class]

[A thief must be so secretive as to never be caught, able to escape from any crisis, and know when to reveal a sharp hidden dagger in the final moment. – Moon Crow]

[Greatly reduces the chance of being detected during stealth actions, assassination bonus applied the moment identity is revealed]

[Significantly increases evasion probability during enemy attacks, additional adjustments upon successful pattern analysis]

[Damage adjustment for counterattacks based on agility stat, able to identify opponent’s fatigue gauge]

Skill Rank Ex.

Even in the game, this was a rank only a few chosen ones, including the protagonist, possessed. I couldn’t help but smile.

“This will make things much easier, being so useful.”

True to its Ex rank, my existing abilities seemed to have been significantly enhanced.

It was a very satisfying growth.

At this rate, the system might as well beg me to raid the nobles’ hidden vaults.

“But now, Luciana’s birthday… I need to think about what gift to give her.”

Flowers or jewels? Luciana’s tastes aren’t like those of a typical girl. She wouldn’t like that.

A sword? Unless it’s exceptional, she would prefer the ancestral sword she currently has.

Ah, I should have raided those vaults earlier.

It was a night filled with deep contemplation.

***

While the servant was deep in thought, his master, Luciana, was also secretly communicating in her room.

“It’s been a while.”

“What brings you to contact me? You don’t usually call to check in.”

The voice from the magic communication orb was surprisingly informal for addressing a duchess.

Typically, except for special friends like Elizabeth or outright enemies like Dmitri, Luciana was accustomed to being spoken to with honorifics.

However, she didn’t make any particular note of it.

The person on the other end had the standing to do so.

“Roberk, I propose a deal.”

Roberk, a name belonging to one of the four noble ducal families in the vast Manhet Empire in the west.

“?”

“My birthday is coming soon. I heard you’re planning to visit the north to celebrate.”

“Well, yes, that’s true.”

The lady beyond the crystal orb responded nonchalantly. Despite being a duchess from the same rank, she seemed uninterested in Luciana’s birthday.

It didn’t matter.

She didn’t contact her to receive birthday wishes like some petulant child.

“So, what does Lady Speda want?”

“I want information about the Sand Mole.”

“…The Sand Mole?”

The atmosphere through the crystal changed instantly at the mention of the notorious thief’s name.

Her voice, which until now seemed perfunctory, now mixed deep interest with seriousness.

‘Much better than just letting it go in one ear and out the other earlier.’

Was it because the petty thief had made a name for himself?

Or was it because, as the newspapers reported, he had brought shame to the Roberk Ducal family?

“He appeared in the north. For the security of the north, it’s necessary to gather information.”

It was a lie.

Security of the north? Of course, it’s important.

But, it was more about personal feelings.

‘If I delve into the information about his collaborator, maybe I can uncover his identity.’

A cold, vengeful blade sharpened in her heart.

“In exchange, if I manage to capture the Sand Mole, I’ll hand him over to your people.”

The Roberk Ducal family had already suffered greatly at the hands of the Sand Mole.

They would surely want to catch him.

However, capturing him without the cooperation of foreign nobility, especially after he had escaped the west, would have been difficult.

Even more so in the insular north.

“Fair proposal. See you on your birthday.”

“It has been a long time since I’ve seen your face. Agreed. I look forward to our meeting then.”

It was essentially an agreement to collaborate.

Of course, neither the yearly birthday nor the other person was of any real concern.

“Frost Mane…”

As she disconnected the communication with the crystal orb, Luciana mulled over the name.

Her lower lip curled inward, bitten by her teeth in the humiliation of her defeat.

The thought of capturing him and making him pay fueled a sinister light in Luciana’s eyes.

Writer Lim spoke.

“P, PD, the number of viewers is continuously increasing. As soon as his face appeared on the live broadcast screen, the numbers quickly went up.”

“How much did it increase?”

“About 200 people tuned in just within a minute.”

Producer Kim Min-woo was surprised.

An influx of 200 viewers in just a minute was unprecedented.

“We’ve only been seeing declines so far.”

Producer Kim Min-woo knew a fact too.

Their program’s interview segment was called ‘The Room of Truth’ by viewers.

It was named so because most people, who expected to see something impressive, often revealed their less admirable true selves.

Now, if a new guest seemed just ordinary, some viewers would immediately turn off the show as a joke.

Hence, the viewership often dropped by hundreds just a minute into the show.

‘Who would have thought that Crazy Rookie looked so handsome.’

Kim Min-woo murmured in admiration.

Standing in the illuminated space, Crazy Rookie was quite tall, nearly 184cm.

He was dressed in a neat suit, and his hair was stylishly waxed up.

The virtual styling space was quite unique.

Enter the desired styling, and in just a second, the outfit or hairstyle changes.

It’s an easy place to find the most fitting clothes and hair for oneself.

“If Blacksmith Hyun had also appeared, it would have been even more impactful.”

“Blacksmith Hyun, you know the rumors.”

“Yeah.”

The current live broadcast title was ‘Crazy Rookie with a Weapon Made by Hyun.’

Regrettably, the external rumors about Blacksmith Hyun were not very favorable.

“The basic one is a fat man in his 50s, or he’s too short. Or he’s a real-life dwarf. You hear a lot of that.”

“It’s the image Hyun created, so it can’t be helped.”

Blacksmith Hyun was maintaining a sense of mystery.

People, curious about this mystery, inevitably created various rumors.

Especially since he never showed his face, most guessed he was unattractive, accounting for over 90% of the speculation.

‘If he had that face, that would truly be a cheat character.’

Producer Kim Min-woo smirked wryly.

In fact, both Crazy Rookie and Blacksmith Hyun were hot topics, but Hyun was overwhelmingly more popular.

If Hyun was a 7, Crazy Rookie was a 3.

Although Crazy Rookie was an impressive user, Blacksmith Hyun, being a blacksmith, had his fame continuously spreading.

‘Did he make the Sword of King Barad? That explains it.’

Kim Min-woo watched Crazy Rookie standing still, then regained his focus.

“PD, you should proceed with the interview.”

“Ah, right.”

Lately, AJ Broadcasting Company had a very small budget, so they couldn’t afford an MC.

Therefore, Kim PD himself approached to interview him.

***

After completing his self-styling in the styling space, Hyun-soo was quite nervous.

He wasn’t naturally inclined to appear in front of the public, so it was accurate to say he was somewhat frozen.

Soon, the PD approached.

“Let’s proceed with the interview. But first, could you look at the screen in front?”

Hyun-soo could see the chat window floating prominently in front of him.

-So handsome……

-Came here to feel good, now I feel depressed, this is a depression-inducing broadcast, he’s damn handsome, f**k……

“The reaction is good.”

Hyun-soo watched as the number of viewers continued to increase.

“I have a few questions for the interview, how old are you?”

“23 years old.”

“Ah, the prime age. Recently, you’ve been called Crazy Rookie, do you know why?”

“Yes, I believe it’s because I won the Super Rookie competition.”

“I saw the video too, it was really impressive even though it was pixelated?”

“Thank you.”

Kim PD was surprised how smoothly he was leading the interview.

What pleased him more was the evident importance the guest placed on manners.

‘Handsome face, talented, and polite. Incredible.’

The chat window was getting hotter too.

-If it’s this Crazy Rookie, I can give him my heart, will you go crazy for me?

-Lol, so funny.

-Sitting upright during the interview, too cute.

-I see sweat on his forehead. Want to wipe it off. Lick.

-Licker, get kicked out.

-Licker has donated 20,000 won.

“You have your first donation during the interview. 20,000 won.”

“There are donations too?”

-Doesn’t know anything?

-You gotta break it to taste it, lol.

-Lick, lick.

-Licker has donated another 20,000 won.

-This guy, donating every time he licks, lol.

“Yes, all donations, after deducting a fee, go to the guest since we’re an internet broadcast.”

“Ah, that’s great.”

Producer Kim Daekook glanced at the viewer count, noticing Hyun-soo’s smile.

‘10,000 viewers?’

For just an interview, they had already reached 10,000 viewers.

‘Maybe it’s all about looks?’

Producer Kim continued with his questions.

“What’s your profession?”

“For now, I’m focused on gaming.”

“Do you have a girlfriend?”

“I wish I did.”

This was just for the show’s promo, not that important.

AJ Broadcasting Company didn’t delve deep into personal matters, especially occupations, as they were sensitive to their audience.

Then the conversation about Crazy Rookie concluded.

“Crazy Rookie, you’re answering questions on behalf of Blacksmith Hyun, right?”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

That’s when it happened.

-Blacksmith Hyun has donated 100,000 won.

“Oh, looks like Blacksmith Hyun is watching.”

“Seems so.”

Hyun-soo noticed something.

‘Nel?’

Nel was clever. He was laying the groundwork to dispel suspicions.

-Isn’t this the first time Blacksmith Hyun has shown up in public?

-So what did he reveal? Lol

-Can you make me an artifact, please?

-What’s the grade of King Barad’s sword?

Seizing the moment, Producer Kim asked a trending question.

“Hyun, you’re watching, right? Can you share info about the sword you made for King Barad?”

He then glanced at Hyun-soo, who deliberately answered after a 10-second delay.

“Ah, just got a message. If viewers exceed 150,000 during the live broadcast, Hyun’s Forge will be open.”

-That means no, lol.

-Last time we hit 150,000 viewers was two years ago…

“That’s what he said?”

Producer Kim, receiving Hyun-soo’s wry smile, continued, “Maybe we can reach it with our best effort…?”

“Right, maybe.”

Producer Kim then posed more detailed questions to Hyun than to Crazy Rookie.

“What’s your job?”

“I’m a blacksmith.”

“Ah, of course. Your level?”

“That’s a secret.”

“Where do you live?”

“In Seoul.”

“How old are you?”

“That’s a secret.”

“How tall are you?”

“That’s a secret.”

Producer Kim looked puzzled.

‘This is tricky…’

-Isn’t that too secretive?

-Is he really an old man? Lol

-How old? Fifty. How tall? 150cm. Probably why he’s so secretive. Lol

Hyun-soo thought about these questions. Too much mystery could damage Hyun’s image.

He decided on one thing.

“He says he’ll prove it with his creations.”

“With his creations?”

-Whoa, confidence…

-Wow…

-Exactly, who cares about the blacksmith’s face! It’s all about the creations.

-Right, right. Who cares who Hyun is! A blacksmith is defined by their work.

And Producer Kim was impressed.

‘Wrapped it up in one sentence.’

Blacksmith Hyun, responding to the discontent with promises of proving himself through his creations, had raised expectations.

The anticipation was immense.

Producer Kim then concluded the interview.

“Crazy Rookie and Hyun will be taking on the Time Attack Dungeon.”

Time Attack Dungeon.

A dungeon that must be cleared within a set time, with records being updated for faster completions than others. It’s a staple content of AJ Internet Broadcasting.

“You have 10 days. Hyun, you’ll need to create 3 artifacts during this time.”

-3 in 10 days? Wow…

-That’s tight, lol.

-Even top blacksmiths would struggle to make 3 in 10 days at regular grade.

Certainly, Producer Kim’s demand was quite challenging.

For average blacksmiths, a quick crafting skill was essential.

However, speeding up the crafting process reduces the chances of producing higher-grade artifacts.

It typically takes 4 days for average blacksmiths to craft an artifact, considering rest after crafting.

-Hyun’s overconfidence might backfire LOL

-Artisans don’t blame their tools, but they do blame time, lol.

-If he crafts one every 3 days, he’ll end up with all regular grades.

Hyun-soo was already familiar with the Time Attack Dungeon.

“He says he’ll give it a try.”

“Then, in 10 days…”

At that moment…

-Blacksmith Rowen has donated 500,000 won.

-???

-Second in the blacksmith rankings?

-Seriously, Rowen?

-Isn’t he the top guild master in our country?

-Wow, one of the three top artisans!

This was due to the sudden appearance of Rowen, the second-ranked blacksmith and guild master of the top-ranked guild.

Soon the chatroom quieted down as if on cue.

-May I set a mission?

Hyun-soo looked at the chat. Producer Kim swallowed nervously, watching him.

Then, after a 10-second pause, Hyun-soo answered.

“Yes, he says.”

-If a rare artifact is produced within 10 days, I’ll donate 1 million won, 3 million for an epic, and 10 million for a unique.

“?”

It was a bold offer. Hyun-soo was surprised by the amount.

“Why such a large amount?”

Soon, Rowen’s message appeared in the chat.

***

Black Anvil Forge.

Top blacksmith guild in Korea.

Number one in forge subscribers.

Rowen gazed at the monitor with a dry, unemotional look.

“I set the challenge because it’s not an easy task.”

Black Anvil has access to data not publicly disclosed by Blue Inc.

Creating three artifacts in ten days is doable.

The problem is that it tires out the character.

Continuous auto-crafting decreases the grade of the artifacts over time.

And he must craft one every three days.

Rushing like that usually results in artifacts 10% lower in grade and effectiveness.

‘The second consecutive creation drops by 25%.’

The grade and effectiveness of subsequent artifacts might drop as much as 45%.

‘Why is he boosting like this?’

Rowen knew.

So far, Hyun had spaced out his auction items over a long period.

Meaning, he focused on crafting quality artifacts and selling only those.

Then he raised his reputation with his mysterious persona.

Of course, it wasn’t Rowen’s place to interfere.

But a decision needed to be made.

‘Blacksmith Hyun. Should I recruit him? And for how much?’

He knows Hyun is already receiving offers in the billion range.

Rowen decided to watch the broadcast and judge for himself.

‘I’m a master-level blacksmith.’

The first, third, and himself – these three were the only ones called master craftsmen, and their actual blacksmithing level was also at the master level.

‘Even I would struggle to produce anything above rare under those conditions.’

The damn system is the problem.

‘There’s no way anyone better than us exists, so it won’t happen.’

But there’s still hope even if the grade is low.

‘If the effect is good relative to its grade…’

The real reason he set this mission on the broadcast was to gauge his value.

‘How much should Black Anvil offer him?’

He would only call out the fair price.

There was nothing more for himself.

After all, Black Anvil’s reputation was high.

Rowen typed in the chat.

-I have high expectations for you, Hyun. But there’s a condition. If you don’t create an epic, can you reveal the information about King Barad’s sword?

This is assumed to be epic.

‘He’s deliberately not revealing it.’

Hyun is cunning. People must be guessing it’s unique. But if it’s unique, that’s an incredible achievement.

Keeping it hidden must have a reason.

Better to pretend it’s unique than reveal it’s just epic.

Then Hyun, through Crazy Rookie, responded.

“He agrees.”

Rowen was excited.

“How much should I offer you?”

His value was of interest.

It didn’t matter how much. Rowen had always bought out all blacksmiths with money.

Act 17

Prev I TOC I Next

A brilliant imperial capital reminiscent of a city that never sleeps.

Turning east from the center, not too far away, there existed a vast slum.

Without going into the reasons for its existence, the root cause lay in the Adratan Empire’s choice to annex other nations by force rather than through agreement.

Excessive wars of conquest.

Although most were victorious, the resulting losses and the inability of new citizens to adapt to the empire’s culture and systems meant they gathered here, away from the heart of the capital.

It’s likely that this social structure will not change during the reign of the current emperor.

Thinking this, I looked at the signpost next to me marked “034A Road.”

‘This must be it.’

The road where a demon sighting was reported.

Reading the sign, I took out the map I received from a man named “Beiden.”

As the saying goes, in the absence of tigers, foxes reign supreme.

The slum area was a sector largely ignored by the royal family.

This man, “Beiden,” was a member of a criminal organization that ruled over this slum.

They were well aware of most of the incidents that occurred in the slums.

Of course, they seemed to have a vague idea of what happened on this road, 034A, as well.

The map also briefly mentioned incidents that occurred in the vicinity.

“How did you know?”

As I briefly scanned the map, intending to check a location I had noted before arriving here, Linne, who was following, asked me.

“What are you referring to?”

“That there are other people hiding in that house.”

Doubt clouded Linne’s emerald eyes, along with a hint of reluctance to ask the question itself.

“Are you curious?”

“Yes, please tell me.”

She nodded honestly, somewhat unexpectedly.

Linne Londebell

She believes there’s something to learn from everyone.

Even from Julian, notorious as he may be, his skills are genuine.

Prioritizing ‘phenomenon’ over ‘people,’ she detested Julian but still sought to learn from him.

I didn’t mind that attitude.

Of course, it would be better if there were no hostility.

“It’s mana sensing.”

“Mana… sensing?”

“Every living being, every object, every phenomenon, the entire universe, is imbued with mana. And, mana naturally reacts to other mana.”

“Mana reacts to other mana.”

“Before entering the house, I used 2 of the 38 ‘Mana Veins,’ the ‘Major Veins,’ to gently release mana into the surroundings. This allowed me to detect the positions of those hiding.”

“Like the ultrasonic waves of a bat?” Linne asked, and I nodded in agreement.

“That such a method is possible…”

I chuckled to myself, seeing her mutter to herself in wonder.

In truth, this method was more commonly used by ‘wizards’ than by ‘Julian.’

Being somewhat familiar with the setting of “Let’s Kill the Demon Lord,” I knew that it was possible to sense the surroundings in this way.

I didn’t know it would be this easy, but probably because of Julian’s overflowing abundance of mana.

Originally, knights would use their unique intuition or the sounds around them to locate hidden enemies, but I wasn’t a perfect ‘Julian.’

So, I had to make do in this manner.

“But you asked that man not about the incidents on Road 034A, but about the living conditions, right?” Linne seemed still curious, opening her mouth again.

Her gaze was directed at the ‘map’ I was holding.

“We’re here to investigate whether demons have appeared on Road 034A, aren’t we?”

“Of course, that’s why we’re here.”

“For that reason?”

When I smiled, she frowned.

“How much do you know about ‘Demonization’?”

“……Do you take me for a fool? It’s the phenomenon where if the malicious will left by the demon god Barbados parasitizes a non-human living being, that being becomes a ‘demon,’ right?”

“Who said that humans can’t undergo ‘Demonization’?”

“That’s the social consensus. There’s never been such a case

before.”

“It would be hard to see. Because it’s a very rare case.”

Linne closed her mouth.

I continued, “Even though it’s a slum, it’s a place adjacent to the capital, covered with resonance stones. It’s difficult for demons to spontaneously appear in such a place. Small animals aren’t suitable hosts because of their size.”

As I spoke, Linne’s expression hardened.

“What are you trying to say? According to you, there’s neither natural occurrence nor parasitic occurrence? Because there are no suitable hosts for demons in the slums?”

“That’s not true. Isn’t this place full of potential hosts?”

Looking around, confusion filled Linne’s eyes.

“That means, Sir Julian, there is a human in this area undergoing <Demonization>. Is that what you want to say?”

“Yes.”

“That’s ridiculous!”

Seeing Linne loudly deny it, it seems that at this time, the fact that humans can also be the subject of <Demonization> has not yet been revealed.

“Humans do not undergo <Demonization>. You said that’s the social consensus, but that’s just an ‘unfounded hope’ that it would be so.”

“……Let’s say that’s true. Then what does that have to do with the housing situation?”

It was a bit annoying to have to explain everything one by one, but since the fact had not yet been revealed, there was clearly a need to explain.

“Human beings who begin to undergo <Demonization> experience high fevers. What’s written on this map are the houses that have obtained fever reducers from the organization overseeing this road, ‘The Six Fingers’.”

Flap.

I waved the map I was holding.

“There are three places that have been targeted in a week. Just looking around these places should suffice. It can be done in a day.”

Linne’s face, full of discontent, followed with a ‘What if it’s not?’.

“If it’s not, then as Miss Linne wishes, we’ll act separately starting from the next day.”

She really is a troublesome lady.

***

There was no gain at the first and second houses.

On the way to the third house, Linne opened her mouth with a somewhat pleasant nuance.

“This is the last one.”

There were multiple meanings implied in that.

A little earlier, she must have been feeling triumphant, believing her statement that humans could not be targets of <Demonization> was correct.

However, as I mentioned earlier, all beings can be subjects of <Demonization>.

Humans just have a slimmer chance compared to other beings.

“It’s over there.”

After scanning the map once, Linne pointed to a house far away.

It looked like an ordinary house from the outside.

But as we approached, the smell of incense became stronger, and I frowned.

The lanterns illuminating the gloomy mansion used fuel that was not refined oil but something unidentifiable, emitting a strange smell.

“The smell is awful……………”

Linne also frowned.

Leaving her behind, I knocked on the ‘last house’s door.

“Is anyone there?”

No answer came from inside.

Just as I was about to knock again,

Creak!

The door slowly opened, making a sound as if it hadn’t been maintained for a long time.

“Who, who is it?”

What came out was an old woman with white hair everywhere.

There were no horns, no demon-like mucus, and she seemed to be maintaining her sanity, which clearly meant she was unrelated to <Demonization>.

However,

‘Fear’

The <Color of Negativity> revealed above the old woman’s head was familiar.

Her somewhat anxious gaze and hesitant way of speaking were just the tip of the iceberg, and then there was the faint, unpleasant smell wafting from inside the house.

This wasn’t the smell of incense.

It was that smell I had encountered numerous times during the escort mission of the ‘Resonance Stone’.

The smell of blood mixed with the scent of demons.

-Zing.

It was as if my eyes were inflamed, and the tip of my nose stung.

The fighting instinct dormant within ‘Julian’ began to stir.

It was the same sensation I felt when I faced a Bicorn demon before.

‘There is one here.’

There was definitely a demon inside.

It was the moment the ‘suspected demon appearance’ written in the directive turned into certainty.

I did my best to suppress the rising emotions.

“I am from the ‘Closed Eyes’, an exclusive organization of the imperial family. I would like to search inside the house, could you cooperate with us?”

“The, The Closed Eyes…?”

The old woman’s eyes widened with bewilderment.

And not long after, it turned into hostility.

“Get out, get out right now! Leave my house this instant!”

With a whoosh, the old woman tried to close the door.

I put my foot in the door gap to prevent it from closing.

Then, with a strong pull on the handle, the door opened all too easily.

‘The family members are one elderly person and his young son.’

A common person undergoing <Demonization> wouldn’t be able to resist the impulses sent by the residual thoughts of the demon.

If it’s not the old woman in front of me, the son who is currently out of sight is suspicious.

“Ugh….”

As the door fully opened, a terrible smell of blood hit me like a storm.

Linne must have smelled it too, as she sighed and covered her nose with her hand.

At this point, it was certain there was a ‘demon’ inside the house.

Furthermore, I could deduce one more fact.

This old woman had either neglected the demon feeding on humans,

Or

‘…provided humans as food for the demon.’

There were two sets of eating utensils and two bowls on the dining table.

This was too strange.

With 2 family members, and if the son was undergoing <Demonization>, he wouldn’t be able to partake in a human-like meal.

“What could the two knives and forks on the table mean?”

“How terrible.”

I moved towards the source of the smell.

At the innermost part of the house, there was a door locked with a padlock.

“Ah, my son is just mentally ill! He just acts out violently sometimes, but he’s normal!”

“Sir Julian! Instead of barging in, we should explain the situation first…………!”

“Is explaining the situation really necessary in this circumstance?”

“Still, this is too forceful!”

“No, on the contrary, it’s principled.”

“We’re not here to exterminate, but to investigate based on a report! At the very least, some explanation is needed…………!”

“Look at that table.”

Linne turned her head to look at the table.

“Two sets of dining utensils, one side untouched but the other neatly empty.”

“You said earlier that there are two family members

“・・・・・・”

“If someone is capable of a proper meal, they wouldn’t be locked up in a room with a padlock.”

Unable to rebut, Linne closed her mouth.

“Inviting neighbors over for a meal, drugging them, and then feeding them to the ‘demon’ locked in that room, I suppose.”

“Impossible.”

Linne’s face was stricken with disbelief, while the old woman hurriedly approached the locked door.

She hastily searched her pockets, pulled out a key, and unlocked the padlock.

“Run away, my son! Quickly, get outside……………!”

Crack─!

From the opened door, a monstrous mouth instantly lashed out and bit off the old woman’s head.

Linne was speechless at the brutal scene.

Meanwhile, my mind was rational.

Just like when I had fought a Bicorn demon before, the character ‘Julian’ possessed instincts that allowed calmness even in such situations.

The demon, possessed as if by a spirit, was devouring the old woman’s corpse. Slowly, a horn was forming on its head.

“A demon!”

Linne quickly drew her sword from its scabbard.

Noticing that the demon had only one horn, she leaped forward and swung her sword.

Her body was obviously stiff.

She must have been startled by the sudden appearance of the demon.

Screech─!

“Ugh…….”

The wildly swung arm of the demon struck Linne.

Seeing the blurring aura of the sword, a certain flaw that the character ‘Linne Londebell’ carries came to mind.

‘A greater number of mana veins than others’

She must handle mana in her own way, not by methods known to the public, but it seems Linne is currently unaware of this.

There are problems in many aspects.

If left as is, it’s only a matter of time before Linne falls victim to a demon.

‘There are various reasons, but this is a mission entrusted to Julian.’

If there are casualties in the mission, especially if ‘a disciple of the Sword Saint’ gets injured, it will attract public attention.

This is troublesome for me. Suspicion mixed with interest is absolutely unacceptable for me, who must play the perfect ‘Julian’!

Kyaaaak!

When the demon lunged at Linne again, I kicked off the ground and kicked the creature’s head.

Accompanied by a horrible scream, it slammed into the wall.

It’s not dead yet.

Because I could feel the presence through the rising dust.

“I don’t need help…..!”

“No need? It’s a matter of concern, isn’t it?”

I drew my sword and aimed it at the demon, leaving her muttering complaints behind.

Meanwhile, a concern suddenly surfaced.

‘Has Linne ever seen the <Moonlight Sword> at this time?’

Currently, the <Moonlight Sword> is in an imperfect state, unlike Julian’s.

If Linne knows about the power Julian possesses and sees my imperfect <Moonlight Sword> in such a situation…

‘…Does this add credibility to the rumors of amnesia?’

While I was pondering, the demon I had slammed into the wall charged at me.

I had to slay it without using the <Moonlight Sword>.

Of course, it didn’t cut through the demon’s body as cleanly as it did with the Bicorn demon because a demon’s body is as hard as metal, and it requires ‘mana’ to cut through.

Kraaaak!

However, Julian, or more accurately ‘I’, was able to cut through it without using aura.

The newly acquired trait <Insight> allowed me to identify weak spots that could be cut without using mana.

By placing my blade on these paths, I was able to inflict continuous minor wounds, if not fatal.

“It, it can’t be… Without any aura.”

Linne muttered to herself in a startled tone behind me.

I was equally astonished.

To cut through a demon’s body without any aura.

After several exchanges without using aura, the demon’s body turned into tatters.

Kieeek, Kieeeeek─!

The demon’s scream filled with terror.

After a short while, it stretched out on the ground, dead from excessive bleeding.

“You could have ended it quickly with the Moonlight Sword, why didn’t you use it?”

“Because it’s more fun this way.”

The crazed, narrow-eyed villain.

Recalling the lines he had uttered made me realize once again what a mad character he was.
