Survival 36

“How did you know…?”

Georg held his breath and peeked over the wall.

“Haha! I heard you were a promising mercenary, but you’re just laughable!”

While on guard duty after accepting a request, he quickly led the available troops to deal with the commotion at the auction house.

Yet, it was still insufficient.

The elusive swordsmanship that was hard to follow, the dazzling footwork that was almost invisible, and the various explosives and traps.

He thought the thief, infamous in the West, would only be chased in pursuit, but it didn’t take long for the Sand Mole to corner him.

Despite the many variables, defeat was already a clear situation.

He could only face it as a mercenary.

Just before collapsing from exhaustion, fortunately, reinforcements arrived.

“Leave this to me. Go check the warehouse.”

The ruler of the North, whose face he also knew.

Georg had no choice but to follow that command.

And there, he witnessed the Northern treasure, Luciana, fighting an unidentified assailant.

He saw her lose consciousness and fall.

Everything.

“Can I win if I strike now?”

To complete his guard duty, he had to confront the one wearing the golden mask.

Especially with the Northern lady captured.

But having watched that battle earlier, he hesitated.

“I couldn’t follow it with my eyes.”

The golden and frosty trajectories clashed, and he swiftly closed the distance and struck Luciana’s neck to win.

That series of movements was beyond his level.

Moreover, the Golden Mask, the victor, was none other than Luciana.

Georg remembered that day clearly.

“You know how to handle a sword, but that’s all. Strive for more.”

The cold blade touching his neck.

The light movements and the heavy aura.

The person who thoroughly crushed him at the martial arts tournament that day.

How many nights had he spent awake because of that day’s helplessness?

Georg swallowed his saliva and hid behind a pillar.

His pride as a mercenary, soaring to the skies, was shattered by her, the Frost Mane.

He wondered if he stood a chance against her. Then.

At the Golden Mask’s glance in his direction, Georg froze in place.

After the Golden Mask left, Georg wiped his cold sweat and muttered in wonder.

“The Sand Mole and that person, is there something about people from the West?”

The proverb he muttered, “Even a sandworm speaks when it’s its turn,” was a saying only used in the West.

He wouldn’t have known it if his mother, also from the West, hadn’t told him.

Come to think of it, his light footsteps also resembled his mother’s, walking as gently as possible to avoid sinking into the sand.

It wasn’t hard for him to guess that he was also a figure from the West.

“Ah, damn it!”

Georg hurried to Luciana, who had fainted and was leaning against the wall.

Although he felt a brief surge of rebellion for following the orders of the man who ruined his mission, the opponent was a noble lady of a ducal house.

His cunning intellect quickly found the answer.

It was a disgrace for a mercenary to receive a fee and not fulfill his duty.

This rescue would mitigate his fault.

He lifted her, gasping for shallow breaths.

Georg smirked at her flowing white silky hair.

“…Some change their names and genders to survive in the industry.”

If he gains more power, could he, like this child, reveal his true, unadorned self?

The Sand Mole and the Frost Mane make him wonder if there’s a secret in the West.

‘Next time I meet someone from the West, I should have a chat.’

In the mercenary industry, strength is power.

Becoming stronger was a minor issue compared to the closed-mindedness of the Northerners.

***

“Ouch… that hurts.”

The emergency treatment was applied, but the left arm pierced by Luciana showed no signs of improvement.

I needed proper treatment soon.

“When is this gentleman supposed to arrive?”

It had been a while since I arrived at the rendezvous point arranged by Elizabeth.

However, there was no sign of Perno.

Of course, since he took on the most dangerous role of bait, it was natural for him to take time to shake off the guards, but even considering that, I had waited too long.

“Is it better this way? If I just swallow all the artifacts myself…”

“That’s absolutely not going to happen. I’m a little late, and you’re already showing your banditry without me.”

As the saying goes, speak of the tiger and it appears. The key figure in today’s operation had arrived.

“Of course, I was joking. Please come in. Let’s start with the distribution…….”

But my words were cut off the moment I saw him.

“Perno? Your arm…”

His right shoulder was conspicuously empty.

“What on earth happened?!”

Perno was no ordinary person.

He was a legendary thief who had evaded the pursuit of ducal houses.

I never imagined he would return in such a wretched state.

“Tsk, talk about bad luck. Who would have thought there’d be a monster hiding in the auction house.”

“A monster?”

“If I traded swords with the war god and only lost one arm, that’s a bargain.”

Then I remembered what Luciana had been saying all along.

‘She was certain that my ally at the auction house would die.

I thought at most it would be that mercenary, but this was beyond my calculations.

My heart sank at this unexpected tragedy.

“Don’t look at me with such worried eyes. It’s burdensome. Anyway, I’ve recovered the severed arm, so I can reattach it if I just go to a priest.”

He tried to sound nonchalant, but how could anyone maintain their composure after losing an arm?

Just looking at his face contorted in pain, I could guess how he felt.

“…Let’s distribute and get you treated.”

Jewels, elixirs, artifacts…

As the loot poured out, Perno lifted the corners of his mouth even in pain.

“Ha, this is it. It’s worth the trouble. These are really valuable. I won’t have to worry about living for a while.”

“Is that so?”

His reaction was quite modest for someone who had spent his life handling artifacts.

Sensing my questioning gaze, he gave a wry smile and answered.

“The really good stuff is hard to convert into money. These kinds of goods are actually in demand.”

Ah, so he preferred liquidity over performance. Well, it would be absurd for a retiree to fuss over the performance of artifacts.

He wouldn’t need them anyway.

“Shall we start the settlement?”

“That’s okay. Just give me the thirty Frostroots as we originally planned.”

I was going to use my pierced left arm as an excuse to extract more shares.

But how could I haggle in front of someone who lost his right arm?

“Look at this. I’m not in a position to receive sympathy from anyone.”

“Please reattach your arm before saying such things.”

“Seriously. I don’t refuse what’s given.”

He smirked and began to casually gather the items.

Not bothered by using only one arm, the speed at which the loot disappeared into his bundle increased.

“Ah, and the knife I lent you.”

As he continued to pack the loot, he mentioned the ‘Will of Hatsan.’

I pulled out the dagger.

“Yes, it was very useful. Thanks to it, I became accustomed to counterattacking, and now I owe you my life.”

If it weren’t for this dagger, I wouldn’t have been able to block Luciana’s attack or protect the loot.

Then.

Without looking back, Perno said indifferently.

“Keep that.”

“…Really? Are you serious?”

Compared to the value of the loot we got today, this dagger was worth more.

I was taken aback by his sudden offer.

“Of course. With my arm like this, am I going to use it?

Besides, I stole it from a prominent place in the West, so I can’t just sell it. It’s better to just give it to you.”

Although his words were rough, I bowed my head in appreciation for his thoughtful gesture.

“I’ll accept it gratefully.”

“Gratitude? Think of it as a graduation gift for the successor.”

Waving his only remaining arm, he gathered his packed bundle.

“Give this to the noble lady who cooperated with us.”

In his hand was the staff that Elizabeth had been searching for.

[Mystic Coral Staff]

[In the Eastern lands of the Manhet Empire, known for their fertility, corals with peculiar magical powers are sometimes found as marine resources.]

[This staff, centered around a coral branch and adorned with jade, has become a symbol of luxury and a tool for amplifying magic among the Eastern nobility.]

[Significantly increases the skill level of one of the wearer’s elemental magics]

[Magic Power +3]

“If you’re referring to Lady Frontal, she probably has much better artifacts than this, doesn’t she?”

“Don’t try to swallow it already. We owe a lot to that girl.”

Well, it’s a joke.

I have a conscience, I have no intention of cheating an important business partner.

“Are you leaving?”

“Yes. There’s nothing left for me to teach, and why stay here? The North is too cold and barren.”

It’s a pity.

If he were to stay in the North, he would be a great help in the war against the demons.

With his genius for innovative ideas, his strategies would be excellent as well.

But the North is not an easy place for someone who has lost an arm to live.

“Where do you plan to go?”

“The West is my homeland, but it’s dangerous since I’m marked by the ducal house. Maybe I’ll just enjoy fishing in the East.”

The East.

I have to visit there anyway because of the disaster, so I should drop by and say hello later.

“Let’s get treated first. You seem to be injured too.”

“It’s less urgent than someone without an arm.”

***

“Lucy, wake up!”

“Umm…”

Luciana slowly opened her eyes, feeling stiffness in her neck.

“Liza…?”

“Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere else?”

The concern of a close friend greeted her as she lay down. However, her mood sank coldly in contrast to that warmth.

“Did I lose again?”

“Well, I’m not sure? The mercenary who carried you here didn’t say anything, so I don’t really know.”

Luciana clenched her eyes shut.

Hans, the demon, and now a mysterious thief.

This was already the third time.

Even though she had used the new power imbued in her ancestral sword.

She still couldn’t avoid defeat.

“Frost Mane.”

Her teeth gritted involuntarily.

What hurt her pride more was that, apart from the bruise on her neck, she was overpowered without any significant injuries.

‘There’s a limit to being ignored.’

Thinking about it, she had drawn her sword with the intention to kill, but there was no killing intent in his sword.

A plaything.

To the Frost Mane, she was nothing more than that.

“Ugh!”

She tried to get up to chase after him, even belatedly, but her body couldn’t withstand it.

It was the price of overusing her aura.

“First, calm down. If you move recklessly now, the wound on your neck might get worse!”

Despite Elizabeth’s restraint, Luciana couldn’t contain her anger and slammed her fist into the ground.

“Lucy! Stop it!”

She knew it. Such rash behavior was nothing more than childish venting that would worsen her condition.

But if she didn’t do this, where would she direct her aimless rage? If left alone, it would slowly fester from within.

Only after venting her emotions to the point where her fists were bruised and bleeding could she regain her sanity.

“Liza, I have a favor to ask.”

At Luciana’s words, Elizabeth gasped in surprise.

For a noble, asking a favor was an act of incurring debt to the other party.

Therefore, Luciana had never asked anyone for a favor before, though she might have given orders.

However, the moment Elizabeth met Luciana’s blazing eyes, she was unwittingly drawn into them.

“You have connections to the underworld, don’t you? Am I wrong?”

Luciana looked at her friend with sharp eyes.

She herself was devoted to martial arts and was not a successor, so she had no real means of contacting the underworld.

But her friend, Elizabeth, was different.

She was not only a lady of a count’s family but also a member of a trading company.

She had suspected as much from the way Elizabeth seemed familiar, almost as if she had the auction house figured out.

Luciana Speda, a warrior more solid than her high pride and noble honor.

Now, after a humiliating defeat, her pride was a secondary concern.

“…Right. But why do you ask?”

“Find out information for me.”

Luciana gritted her teeth, recalling her battle with him.

He had countered all her attacks, including her sword transitions, which she prided herself on being unconventional.

As if he had known them in advance.

-Oh, the treasure of the North knows my name. I’m honored.

Her opponent knew her, but she knew nothing about him except his name.

There could be countless reasons for the defeat, but in Luciana’s opinion, that was the decisive factor.

If the cause was known, it could be fixed.

“Bring me any information about Frost Mane, no matter how trivial.”

“……”

“Liza?”

Meanwhile, Elizabeth was too excited to respond to Luciana’s request.

‘Oh my, Lucy is asking me for a favor!’

Noble society is a place of countless intrigues.

In such a place, a request is an act of directly exposing one’s desires to others.

Luciana’s attitude of even bowing to a lower noble could become a weakness in political strife.

As such.

Showing that to her meant she was somewhat trusted.

“…No, I’m sorry. Was it too burdensome? I’ll look into it myself.”

“Lucy, why do you say that? Of course, I can help with that.”

A strange fervor appeared in Elizabeth’s eyes.

Although they called each other by nicknames, if asked whether they were truly close friends, the answer would be no.

They each had their own families and various restrictions.

Luciana’s attempt was to break through all these petty constraints.

‘That bastard created this opportunity.’

A follower wouldn’t miss the chance to get one step closer to their idol.

“We’re friends, aren’t we?”

As they clasped hands, Luciana also smiled at Elizabeth’s willingness to go along with her insistence.

“Thank you.”

“Is this something to be thanked for? It’s not a difficult favor.”

They looked at each other for a moment and then burst into laughter without anyone starting it first.

Gone were the two ladies who only called each other by formal nicknames.

There were two girls who had become true friends, shedding their noble status.

“Drink this for now and return to the duke’s residence. I’ll gather some information here. With Frost Mane’s recent terrorist act, now is the perfect time.”

“I’ll accompany you…ugh.”

“Don’t be reckless when you’re not even fully healed. Leave it to me.”

Luciana relented her stubbornness at Elizabeth’s confident declaration.

“Then I’ll leave it to you. I’ll be waiting for good news.”

Watching Elizabeth’s bright figure leaving, Luciana pondered her original goal.

Of course, to recover as quickly as possible.

“I’ll make you regret leaving me alive. I will definitely catch you.”

Frost Mane. Just as he spared her life, she too will capture him and make him experience the same humiliation.

“Come to think of it, I can make good use of this birthday.”

A thief is nothing more than a criminal.

And among her acquaintances, there was someone experienced in capturing and dealing with such criminals.

“I only thought of it as an extension of tedious social gatherings. But this time, I must engage properly.”

Even if it’s to catch Frost Mane.

Luciana, with her throbbing body, sat in front of the mirror.

She washed the wound carved by the dagger handle with the potion Elizabeth had given her.

It should indeed be called a potion.

The bruise was cleanly erased. The visible bruise, that is.

In the mirror.

Luciana’s eyes, as if ice had been directly embedded in them, shone ominously.

After the handshake, Bark spoke.

“I’d like to pay for the shield you made for me.”

“That was a gift from me.”

“I would have happily accepted if it was just any shield. But this one isn’t ordinary, is it?”

Bark chuckled sardonically.

“Accepting it as is would make me feel indebted.”

Hyun-soo understood him and knew Bark was considering his circumstances.

“Then I’ll gladly accept it.”

Hyun-soo knew Bark preferred paying over carrying a burden of gratitude.

Bark, as Hyun-soo knew, was a real estate tycoon.

A billionaire.

Or perhaps even more than that, he speculated.

“I’ve checked the market value. I’ll transfer 400 million won to your account today.”

Hyun-soo was pleasantly surprised by the unexpected windfall.

‘That makes it 2.5 billion…’

Still, it was money owed to the hospital.

“The most important thing now is to make Hyun’s forge a big hit. What are you planning to do next?”

Nel stepped in at Bark’s question.

“We plan to accept commission requests.”

“Oh?”

Bark smiled with interest. Hyun-soo, too, was excited about this long-awaited venture.

‘The first commission request is vital for introducing Hyun’s forge to the public.’

Hyun-soo had never accepted commissions for Hyun’s forge before.

Maintaining its mystique.

“This commission is crucial for us, we need to gain a lot from it.”

Nel looked at them earnestly.

“We need to maximize publicity and profit from this request. The key is the client.”

“The client?”

Hyun-soo looked puzzled.

“Yes, the client must meet several criteria. First, they should be very favorable towards us. That way, they can widely promote the completed artifact.”

Hyun-soo nodded in understanding.

“Next, they should be a popular user, with a clean reputation. If female, being pretty would be good, and if male, handsome.”

Hyun-soo chuckled at this.

“Does such a person even exist?”

Nel smiled mysteriously at him.

“There’s someone very close. They’re currently popular, good-looking, scandal-free, and more than favorable towards making Hyun’s forge a success.”

Bark stroked his chin, looking at Hyun-soo.

“There’s one close by. About 185 cm tall, quite handsome, and recently won a competition with outstanding performance.”

Hyun-soo, faced with their gazes, looked bewildered.

It felt strangely familiar, and realizing something, he pointed at himself.

“Me?”

Following Ares’ global success, Blue Inc. and several broadcasters entered into agreements.

This included not only terrestrial but also internet broadcasts through ZTube.

One of them was AJ Internet Broadcasting.

Kim PD of AJ Internet Broadcasting chewed on his pen.

“If we can get the popular rookie and Hyun’s forge together, it’ll be a hit.”

Kim PD exchanged a sardonic smile with Writer Im.

The plan was this:

“The popular rookie commissions an artifact from Hyun’s forge and uses it to conquer dungeons. Sounds fun, right? The main issue is casting.”

“Yes, the forge owner is quite enigmatic.”

“That’s why we said it’s fine if they don’t show their face, just the commissioned item.”

“Right.”

“If this works out, it’ll be huge…”

A collaboration between the popular rookie and Hyun’s forge!

A perfect picture.

The challenge, as always, was casting.

‘In such cases, usually one of the two fails to be cast…’

Then:

“PD, sir!”

“Hm?”

Kim PD looked puzzled.

“A note from Hyun’s forge. They agreed to send the artifact without showing their face.”

“Does this mean we can broadcast their first commission?”

Then the writer looked shocked.

“Wow, fantastic!”

“What now?”

Kim PD looked expectant at the writer.

“The popular rookie agreed to appear too!”

“Wow!”

Kim PD clapped without realizing.

The popular rookie and blacksmith Hyun.

Their appearance on the show could be the lifeline AJ Internet Broadcasting needed.

***

“Me?”

Hyun-soo was puzzled that he was the one receiving the commission request. It felt like he was being asked to play two roles at once.

“Currently, viewers don’t think the Crazy Rookie and Blacksmith Hyun are the same person.”

Indeed, that was the case. But Hyun-soo had his concerns.

“I was suspected once before. Is this really okay?”

“Don’t worry, you’re scheduled to appear on this internet broadcast,” she reassured, handing him a file.

The first page read ‘AJ Internet Broadcasting.’

“AJ Internet Broadcasting has offered a simultaneous appearance to both Blacksmith Hyun and the Crazy Rookie. The proposed content involves conquering a dungeon.”

“Isn’t it impossible for Blacksmith Hyun and the Crazy Rookie to take on a dungeon together?”

“Fortunately, the broadcast station said it’s fine for Blacksmith Hyun to just send an artifact suitable for dungeon conquest. They respect our desire for mystery.”

It was an intriguing proposal. Hyun-soo was curious about Nel’s plan, and her meticulous and competent approach.

“If viewers raise doubts, AJ Internet Broadcasting will handle it. ‘We proposed this content to both individuals.'”

“Wow.”

Hyun-soo was impressed.

The internet broadcasting station would announce that they initiated the collaboration, providing evidence to dispel any doubts.

Nel continued.

“You might be worried about backlash when it’s revealed both personas are the same. Don’t be. The surprise will outweigh any criticism.”

Hyun-soo considered this in his mind.

Indeed, her approach seemed safe and likely to achieve the desired effect.

Now, the focus was on learning about AJ Internet Broadcasting, which would broadcast their first commission request.

“What is AJ Internet Broadcasting like?”

“It was the channel with the highest viewership in the early days of Ares, peaking at nearly 200,000 viewers.”

“Wow.”

200,000 viewers for an internet broadcast was impressive.

“But lately, they’re down to 40,000 viewers. Three years ago, AJ Internet Broadcasting focused on content with level 80-100 users. But now, viewers aren’t interested in that level range.”

It was understandable.

What used to be high-level content was now just beginner level.

“Now, viewers are interested in around level 300 content, and AJ Internet Broadcasting is still producing similar shows. That’s why ratings have dropped. But with your participation, we might create a buzz.”

Hyun-soo thought positively.

‘Do I have no choice?’

Given the Crazy Rookie’s lower level, it was inevitable. Nel added,

“Is the broadcasting station important? It’s the participants who matter.”

Her point had merit.

“I’ll send the approval note right away.”

Hyun-soo expressed his willingness to accept AJ Internet Broadcasting’s offer.

The response came quickly.

[Hello. This is Kim Min-woo, PD at AJ Internet Broadcasting. We’re thrilled to work with the Crazy Rookie. We plan a brief interview tomorrow. It can be in reality or virtual reality. In virtual reality, you’ll appear almost as in real life. This is to minimize travel and will be held in a personal space linked to Ares.]

The idea was to interview in virtual reality, appearing as in real life.

‘No scars will show.’

[I think meeting in Ares would be better.]

[Tomorrow at 1:50 PM, we’ll send an invitation. Once accepted, you’ll move to a personal styling space. Please dress in your preferred style for the 2 PM interview.]

After wrapping up as the Crazy Rookie, a note came to Hyun’s forge.

[Blacksmith Hyun, pleased to meet you. AJ…]

The content was similar.

[How should we proceed with the interview?]

Blacksmith Hyun was supposed to just send the requested item.

Hyun-soo had a clever idea.

[I have already traded with the Crazy Rookie and have a rapport. I will whisper to him and have him respond on my behalf.]

Hyun-soo smartly handled the situation.

“I’m going to test these armors.”

Bark vanished in a flash of light. Nel logged out after briefing him on things to be cautious about.

Left alone, Hyun-soo calmed his fluttering heart.

‘Can I do this?’

He was not used to broadcasting.

Additionally, Hyun-soo was worried about his participation in the broadcast and whether he could attract a significant audience. Then, the following day at 1:50 PM:

[You have received an invitation to AJ Internet Broadcasting’s virtual space.]

[You will be moved to the styling area first.]

Hyun-soo vanished in a flash of light.

[Preparing for the broadcast.]

On the AJ Internet Broadcasting channel, viewers who had logged in early waited for 2 PM.

– It’s about to start, the legendary AJ Broadcasting’s ‘Room of Truth.’ LOL

– The Room of Truth, where no one escapes the reality! Man, AJ really has a knack.

– For real, everyone they bring on usually looks plain.

– Isn’t the Crazy Rookie on today? Wonder if he looks as wild as his name suggests? LOL

AJ Internet Broadcasting was famous for its ‘Room of Truth.’ The show disappointed most viewers by revealing the real appearances of players, who often fell short of expectations. Players would imagine the faces of skilled and flashy users, but many failed to live up to these imaginings, especially the guests on AJ Internet Broadcasting.

– Terrible luck in the looks department, for real.

– Watch, as soon as they reveal their faces, the viewer count will drop, LOL

The interview was like a teaser, so appearances were considered important.

– How many viewers do we have now?

– 6,900.

– Bet it’ll drop to 5,000 today, LOL

– They say Blacksmith Hyun is on today too, but won’t show his face.

– What’s that about?

– Rumor has it he’s a 50-year-old guy with a beer belly, only about 5’3″.

– Makes sense. Why else would he hide his identity?

– Agreed.

As they waited:

[The broadcast will start in 5 seconds.]

– To the Room of Truth!

– Watch the ratings plummet!

Viewers flooded the chat with a countdown.

– 3!

– 2!

– 1!

Flash!

The “Preparing for the broadcast” message disappeared, and the room lit up brightly. A man stood there.

– …?

– What?

– For real?

– Is that him???

Viewers commented on the man on the screen.

– Why is he so handsome…?

– He’s good-looking enough to be locked in the Room of Truth!

The viewer count began to rise.

Act 16

Prev I TOC I Next

Sporadically marked with old grime, the dimly lit streets of the slum area were dark due to improperly functioning lights.

Linne glanced back at the man following her.

The narrow-eyed man displayed a dignified elegance without any superfluous detail.

However, Linne knew that this was a mask to hide his true nature.

The man’s name was Julian Crypart Frason.

He had forsaken the teachings of his master, Hayden Reich, and become a degenerate, reduced to a lapdog of the royal family.

Noticing that he was following her, Linne clicked her tongue internally.

‘Didn’t he understand what I said?’

Just before, Linne had signaled to Julian that they should not get in each other’s way and just do their own tasks.

However, as if he hadn’t heard her, he was still following her.

Of course, it was impossible that this sly human hadn’t understood her signals.

“Aren’t we both disciples of the same master? Please don’t be so harsh.”

Linne scoffed inwardly at his insincere words.

He was a man with a strong desire for self-expression.

He hated being attached to the shadowy label of ‘Hayden Reich’s disciple’ while simultaneously harboring a strong longing for the title of ‘Sword Saint,’ more than anything else.

So much so that when Hayden had excommunicated Julian, the matter of life and death was brought up.

Indeed.

He wanted to surpass the ‘wall’ that was his master, Hayden Reich, even if it meant turning his master into an enemy.

But for such a person to speak of the relationship between master and disciple was laughable.

“Stop following me.”

Eventually, Linne frowned and spoke.

“Miss Linne, if you say that, it puts me in a difficult position. It’s my mission, after all.”

Linne felt a chill down her spine at his chuckling smile.

She couldn’t grasp what he was thinking behind that eerie smile.

Just ignore it.

Linne decided to pretend she didn’t see it and read the directive again.

“Investigate the slums for signs of a demon’s appearance.”

The location is Area 034A.

It’s a section of the slums, and arriving on the scene marks the start of the mission.

Linne moved through the dirty streets of the slum with brisk steps.

Soon, a grimy sign caught her eye.

The current location is 031A.

Just a bit further, and she would reach her destination, Area 034A.

“Uh…?”

But the number on the next sign that appeared was 011C.

By order, Area 032A should have been next.

Linne was greatly perplexed.

A voice came from right behind her soon after.

“Hehe, didn’t I tell you? Due to illegal extensions, the signs in this slum district cannot serve as reliable landmarks.”

Julian’s voice.

His tone was the same as usual, but given the situation, it felt more irritating than ever.

“Don’t interfere without reason. And, if you know so well, how about you go ahead on your own instead of following me?”

She retorted and tried to continue on her way.

However, the signs that followed led her not closer to her destination, Area 034A, but rather further away.

“Ugh! What on earth!”

01A.

Eventually, Linne found herself back where she started, stomping her feet in frustration.

All the while, Julian was still following her.

At this rate, she might not reach her destination before the day ends.

With that thought, Linne sneaked a glance at Julian, who had been following her.

From his talk, it seemed he knew the geography here.

Maybe if she waited subtly and followed, she might reach her destination.

‘I’d rather die.’

But as the sole disciple of her only master, it wouldn’t do her dignity any good. Especially not to lose to that traitor.

Julian, he was a man of tremendous talent, enough to be acknowledged by ‘Sword Saint’ Hayden Reich.

Reluctantly, Linne knew it too.

Just by looking at his gait, one could tell.

The neat stride that wasn’t used carelessly, perfect breathing, the menacing aura exuding so strongly that anyone on the

path of the sword could inherently sense it.

Not acquired, but innate.

‘Even if it kills me.’

Thus, as a disciple of the ‘Sword Saint,’ Linne was always compared to Julian.

If it were him, he would have done it.

If it were him, it was expected.

If it were him, if it were him.

Ever since she began walking the path of the sword to avenge the order, the phrase ‘if it were him’ nagged at her pride like a pest.

‘I’ll do it on my own. Even if I fail the mission, I won’t be asking you for help.’

Perhaps that ‘smiling executioner’ is waiting.

Waiting to break her pride, to see her reaching out for help.

‘Julian’ would think it possible.

Because he was a man with a vile nature.

“Have you… lost your way?”

At that moment, a shabbily dressed man lying on the street approached Linne to speak.

His attire and appearance were ragged, and given his uncomfortable posture, it was clear he was a beggar.

“Though I am unable to guide you due to my condition, if you pass through this street and turn left at the first alley you see, a building will appear. Someone there will know the local geography well.”

“…Is there a guide in this area?”

“It’s quite a complicated place.”

He pointed the direction while barely standing on his staggering feet.

In this harsh world, there is no kindness without expectation of reward, and no generosity without reason.

Linne knew well that one should not easily trust the goodwill offered by strangers.

However, the thought of not appearing weak in front of ‘Julian’ kept urging her.

“Thank you!”

Linne smiled warmly and handed the beggar 100 Nars, the currency of the empire.

In that moment, a flame of desire lit in the beggar’s eyes, but Linne failed to notice it.

“You see? I don’t need your help to complete this mission.”

“Miss Linne, impressive,” Julian said, shrugging his shoulders as he watched Linne speak confidently.

Linne almost frowned but managed to hide her expression upon seeing the place the old man had described.

***

In the Adratan Empire, there are three major criminal organizations.

Among them, the organization that primarily operates in the slums not managed by the royal family is called ‘The Six Fingers’.

Including human trafficking, assassination, smuggling, theft, and gambling, it was a gathering of ruthless individuals willing to do anything for money.

A member of The Six Fingers, Bayden, chuckled inwardly upon seeing two young lambs who had wandered into his workplace.

‘Fools.’

The slums, hardly under the empire’s powerful law enforcement, naturally suffered from poor public safety.

People disappearing one or two at a time wasn’t considered strange; rather, those who couldn’t protect themselves from danger were often blamed.

The same applied to outsiders.

It was common for newcomers to get lost in this maze-like place, leading to many missing persons, most of which were the work of criminal organizations.

‘The man is… passable, but the woman…?’

Looking at Linne, with her blonde hair, Bayden smiled inwardly.

Her beauty was such that the phrase “a beauty that could overthrow a nation” came to mind.

A desire to touch that white skin with his hands seemed to boil up from within Bayden.

“So, you’re looking for a way?”

“Yes, I’m trying to find Area 034A.”

“Oh dear….”

Upon hearing Linne’s words, Bayden let out a short sigh.

Then, he naturally took out three cups and poured coffee into them.

Of course, except for Bayden’s, the cups were specially ordered.

They were special cups that would release the liquid of the sleep-inducing herb at the bottom when hot water was added.

Bayden drank his coffee first to avoid suspicion.

Then, he immediately continued talking, giving no room for idle thoughts.

“If you want guidance to Road 034A, it would cost about 300 Nars. Do you have the money?”

Humans tend to be highly sensitive to acts of kindness without a clear purpose but somewhat duller to those with an expectation of compensation because it’s evident what the other party is aiming for.

It’s about understanding and feeling reassured about what the other person is thinking.

“300 Nars… Okay.”

Linne nodded and grabbed the cup filled with coffee.

Acting unguardedly because she thought this was a ‘contract’ where the other party wanted ‘money’ as compensation.

However, Bayden’s goal wasn’t the ‘money’.

It was her, ‘Linne’, herself.

Watching Linne bring the cup to her lips, Bayden swallowed his saliva.

Bang!

Suddenly, a hand intervened, snatching Linne’s cup and slamming it down on the table.

As Bayden frowned, the narrow-eyed man slowly walked over, grabbed the handle of the kettle, and

“Aaaaah!”

Threw it straight at Bayden.

“What, what the hell are you doing, you bastard!”

Bayden, drenched with the boiling contents of the kettle, cursed loudly.

His face was fierce enough to reach for the sword at his waist immediately.

“Y-You, crazy…!”

“Julian, what are you doing!?”

Hearing the man’s name, Bayden stiffened like a corpse.

‘Julian? Did she just say Julian?’

Cold sweat began to stream down Bayden’s back.

The smiling executioner.

A ruthless noble who, as a lapdog of the royal family, would slash through nobles and commoners alike without discrimination.

It would be no exaggeration to say that there was no one in the empire who didn’t know of his infamy.

‘No, but could the man before me really be that smiling executioner?’

Bayden thought.

“It seemed there might have been some impurities in the drink. It was just a precautionary check.”

Hehe, with a short laugh, ‘Julian’ shifted his gaze to the two cups in front of him.

“It doesn’t seem like you tampered with the drink, so you must have done something to the cup.”

“W-What do you mean…”

“If not, why don’t you drink from the cup you’ve given us?”

The narrow-eyed man handed the cup to Bayden.

“Uh…?”

Hesitation brought doubt into Linne’s eyes as well.

Bayden internally cursed and decided to call the members of his organization who were nearby.

At that moment.

Clink!

The narrow-eyed man casually took out a coin from his wallet and placed it on the table.

“The guide fee, you said it was 300 Nars, right? If not…”

Clink!

That wasn’t the end.

Julian placed another coin on the table.

The total amount piled on the table now amounted to 1200 Nars.

“Do I also need to account for the fee of the three guards you’ve placed nearby?”

The tone was as tranquil as a lake under the moonlit night.

The implications contained in that short sentence were not singular.

The sense to instantly recognize the secretly positioned members, and the courage to enter this place knowing they were there, clearly indicated someone of immense confidence in their skills.

‘That means… The man before me could indeed be the one with that terrifying reputation.’

“How will you proceed?”

His voice was calm and steady.

In that moment, he realized.

The money in front of him wasn’t just a ‘fee’.

It was blood money.

The lives of the four people present at this location.

“How… What should I do?”

Bayden capitulated.

To survive, acceptance was his only option.

“The location of Road 034A, and information about recent incidents on Road 034A.”

Finding compassion in that faint smile was impossible.

All that could be seen was a deep abyss.

An inescapable quagmire.

Bayden trembled.

Desperately praying for this situation to end.

“And, I suggest you turn yourself in. Simple, right?”

[You have hunted the avatar of the Fire Queen.]

[Job Quest: Conquering the Salamander’s Dungeon completed.]

[Acquired the Dragonfire Armor Set.]

Bark, emerging from the dungeon, had finally obtained the gear he desired.

The set, consisting of armor, helmet, and gauntlets, was all epic artifacts and triggered a set effect.

‘Thanks to the set effect, I can harness the power of unique artifacts.’

However, Bark knew, even after clearing this job quest, he couldn’t claim the top spot in the tank rankings.

‘The top tank, Balron, is in an epic class and about 30 levels higher than me.’

For Bark, a player of a normal class, this was an insurmountable barrier.

At that moment, waiting to warp out of the collapsing dungeon, Bark looked puzzled.

‘What’s going on? Why can’t I log out?’

Suddenly, a sense of unease crept up behind him. The avatar of the Fire Queen had warned him.

If he didn’t mention the blacksmith’s name, he might be pursued.

‘Could it be…?’

Was he trapped here?

Then, an unexpected notification came.

Ding!

[Hidden Piece. Hidden Qualification Test completed.]

“…?”

Bark looked puzzled. A qualification test?

More notifications flashed.

[You didn’t reveal your comrade’s name despite being in danger.]

[A tank is a job that not only protects oneself but also possesses the mental strength to safeguard allies.]

[You have proven yourself as an outstanding tank.]

[Congratulations.]

[Hidden Class. You can now change to the class of the Growing One.]

[The Growing One is an epic class.]

[The more you protect your allies and achieve for them, the higher you will rise.]

Bark was amazed. The Salamander’s Dungeon and the avatar of the Fire Queen were related to the tank’s job quest all along.

The avatar hadn’t asked about the artifact out of greed.

Perhaps it was testing him, asking for the name of someone dear to Bark.

[You have changed to the Epic Class, the Growing One.]

[The Growing One can aspire to legendary status.]

[All stats will be redistributed with 200 bonus points applied evenly.]

[Skills will change, granting you greater power.]

[The Growing One is a special job that protects loved ones.]

[You haven’t joined a guild yet.]

[Joining a guild is recommended.]

“Ha, hahaha!”

Bark burst into laughter. A legendary class. A class superior to any other.

Of course, he didn’t know whether it would take him two years or three to change to a legendary class.

But the merit of his job continually growing was too attractive.

[Exiting Salamander’s Dungeon.]

Immediately warped out, Bark stepped outside the dungeon with a trembling heart.

He had a place he must go to.

[Bark: Hyun-soo, where are you? I have something important to tell you.]

Bark waited for a response.

***

Nel was a businesswoman.

Her primary goal was to make Hyun-soo the most famous blacksmith in the country.

She was analytical and possessed a colder sense of judgment than anyone else.

After deciding to form a guild, she said:

“We’ll start as a small, elite group.”

Most guilds set conditions for joining.

The reason for setting joining conditions is to allow guild members to mingle freely within the guild.

If there’s a big level difference, they usually don’t mix well.

It also makes it harder to reach the guild’s goals.

Nel, who met Hyun-soo to discuss guild-related matters, smirked.

“You might change.”

Hyun-soo had told her about making the artifact for Bark. And Nel’s biggest concern was this:

“He’s a businessman, you know.”

Of course, Nel didn’t know him. But she had seen many businessmen in her life.

Hyun-soo was more valuable than a goose that lays golden eggs.

His value was beyond imagination.

“Maybe he will come to Hyun-soo and propose to form a guild. He would be the guild leader. That would be the most beneficial move for him business-wise.”

Nel saw the businessman only through the eyes of a businesswoman.

Rather than focusing on her relationship with Hyun-soo and Bark, she strives to guide him on the right path.

It might be overstepping, but it’s about being stern to make him the best.

“He’s not like that to me.”

But Hyun-soo smiles confidently, dismissing her concern.

Nel shakes her head.

“Whether to accept him as a guild member is up to Hyun-soo, but it’s also important to consider if he’s really needed in our guild.”

This was a clear fact.

No matter how much she searched, there was no information about Bark.

In the world of Ares, there’s 99% ordinary users and 1% special users. Neither Nel nor Hyun-soo knew which category Bark fell into, though chances were high he was among the 99% ordinary ones.

‘But what if he’s in the lower 20% of those users?’

Nel smirked but chose not to speak further.

Hyun-soo was smart, but still too naive to understand how dangerous businessmen can be.

If Bark demands the position of guild leader, Nel would intervene on her own. Ultimately, joining the guild would be Hyun-soo’s decision.

‘I don’t like businessmen.’

Ironically, she disliked businessmen despite being one herself. However, their conversation was not unpleasant. There were no raised voices or insistence on personal opinions.

[Bark: Hyun-soo, where are you? I have something important to tell you.]

A whisper arrived for Hyun-soo.

Hyun-soo said with a bitter smile.

“He says he has something important to tell me.”

“Indeed.”

Nel knew how 99% of businessmen behaved and hoped Hyun-soo wouldn’t get hurt.

He was like a beautiful, vulnerable gem.

‘Something important, what else would a businessman want to say once he knows about Hyun’s worth?’

But Hyun-soo waited silently, and Nel said no more.

Suddenly, there was a commotion in town.

“What’s going on?”

“Looks like an unofficial ranker.”

“Check out that armor, it’s insane.”

“Wow, amazing.”

Nel looked puzzled.

‘Unofficial ranker?’

These were hidden powerhouses living in secrecy, often beating official rankers.

The unofficial rankers’ trait was that their character names didn’t appear overhead.

But one look at his artifact-laden armor, and it was clear he was powerful.

A man clad in armor adorned with flaming designs emerged.

‘He’s extraordinary,’ Nel thought, recognizing a true powerhouse.

But she lost interest, thinking it wasn’t their concern.

Until…

“Hyun-soo.”

“…?”

Nel was startled. The man was smiling at Hyun-soo from a distance.

‘Is that Bark?’

Nel had just considered that among the world’s users, 99% are ordinary and 1% are special.

Could Bark be the one with something important to say to Hyun-soo?

‘Maybe he’s here to invite him to his guild.’

But there he was, standing before Hyun-soo.

“You had something important to say?”

Nel watched as the man nodded slowly.

“Yes, I had something important. I received the shield you gave me.”

As she watched this unfold, Nel realized she was wrong.

But then…

The man hugged Hyun-soo tightly.

“Bravo, fantastic, incredible! It’s you! The blacksmith who set the world ablaze! How did I not recognize you sooner!? Such a remarkable fellow!”

Nel’s calculations were completely off.

The man’s important words to Hyun-soo were all praises.

Releasing Hyun-soo, Bark said, “Hyun-soo, I fully recognize your worth. Don’t be swayed.”

He spoke gently, smiling.

“Don’t fall for those trying to use you. Believe in yourself and aim higher and farther. I’m here, just cheering you on! Hoping for your greater success. Hahaha!”

Bark laughed heartily, full of genuine admiration.

Hyun-soo smiled brightly, as if his expectations had been met.

Then he asked, “Have you joined a guild?”

“No, I haven’t,” Bark replied with a smile. “I thought about inviting you to form a guild together, but it didn’t feel right.”

“I don’t want to use you for any personal gain,” Bark added.

Realizing her mistake, Nel quickly apologized.

“Hello, I’m Nel, Hyun-soo’s manager,” she introduced herself naturally. She then explained the concerns she had expressed to Hyun-soo and bowed her head in apology.

“I’m sorry. I doubted the nature of your relationship.”

Bark wasn’t offended by her words.

“You’ve got a good person looking out for you; she’s right. She’ll weed out the wrong ones.”

It was clear that she had said those things out of care for Hyun-soo and that Bark also wanted to protect him.

Hyun-soo looked at Bark, “But I would really like it if you joined our guild.”

“Huh?” Bark looked surprised.

It wasn’t that he was averse to the idea. He also thought it would be fun to be in a guild with Hyun-soo.

“I’d like to help you, and I hope you can help our guild too,” Hyun-soo added.

Bark nodded his head, thinking it wasn’t about personal gain but about being able to protect Hyun-soo.

‘I can protect Hyun-soo if I’m there.’

Bark had pride in himself.

“Alright, I’ll protect you. I’m level 311, a tank called the Growing One in the epic class, and I can even become a legendary class.”

“…A legend?” Nel was the most shocked.

To become a legend was a feat achieved by very few players.

‘Level 311?’

Nel realized the guild was about to gain an incredible member.

Hyun-soo introduced himself, “I’m level 80 and my job is the God Blacksmith.”

Bark was astonished; he had never heard of such a class before.

After the introductions, Bark extended his hand first.

“Please take care of me, Guild Master.”

“Likewise, please take care of us,” Hyun-soo replied, firmly shaking Bark’s hand.

In that moment, an unformed guild was about to recruit a top-ranking tank, a significant figure in their journey ahead.

Survival 35

Prev I TOC I Next

-Clang!

Sparks flew, creating a gap.

We both stepped back momentarily to regain their posture.

“You have skills that don’t suit a petty thief.”

To others, her expression seemed normal, but I noticed Luciana’s slightly furrowed brow.

It was easy to interpret its meaning.

It seems my adversary didn’t like that I was putting up more of a fight than expected.

“Your reputation as the ‘Northern Gem’ isn’t unwarranted, it seems.”

“I don’t need your evaluation.

The sword, filled with a killing intent, sent shivers down my spine.

Is this the real Luciana?

‘How much was she holding back in our sparring?’

Yet, the efforts of the past week were not in vain.

-Killing intent also helps in discerning the enemy’s attack pattern. It’s not easy to grasp, but it’s a matter of intuition and getting used to it through experience.

-I’m already getting the hang of it.

-No wonder you dodged my critical strike, but now try applying the same method in your counterattack. It won’t be easy.

Remembering Perno’s teachings, I heightened all my senses.

Then, a chill ran down my neck and heart.

Undoubtedly her killing intent.

Following it, the swift rapier’s blade lunged at me.

-Clang!

“Hmph. Such insignificant tricks.”

Knowing where the sword aimed made it easy to predict the path of the attack.

As proof, I perfectly blocked her swift sword strikes, which I would have barely avoided under normal circumstances.

Two consecutive blocked attacks.

“Wasn’t it a flashy show, befitting a flashy sword?”

The artificially conjured smile seemed to deeply irritate her, deepening the creases on her forehead.

The unfamiliar dagger in my hand shone brilliantly.

I had concealed my usual weapon, the Raven’s  Claw.

Using that dagger in front of Luciana would soon prove the theory that I was Hans Byron.

Instead, what clashed with her was a sword no less formidable.

-Take this.

-…Isn’t this the one used by Master?

-Yes. I will lend it to you, so try it out in this operation.

The treasured sword, adorned with dangling jewels, used by Perno during training.

This was indeed a fine piece.

Unlike my original dagger, which was focused on evasion, this one was thoroughly designed for counterattacking.

[Will of Hatsan]

[Item Category: Dagger]

[The West is where the longest and most fierce conflicts between the noble and the underworld families occur. The assassin guild, Hatsan, representing the underworld there, has two heirlooms passed down to its leaders.]

[For an assassin, the most crucial thing is the annihilation of the target. This dagger, one of the heirlooms, is made to faithfully serve that purpose while also embodying the splendor of Hatsan.]

[When attacking or defending with the dagger, additional bonuses are granted.]

[Damage significantly increases based on agility stats during parrying.]

[Extra damage when attacking a target listed in the ‘ledger’.]

From its name, it seems to be something stolen while in the West.

Anyway, as long as it performs well, how it was acquired doesn’t really matter.

“Can you withstand this too?”

“Oh, the most common thing you see in the North is broadsword skills.”

I retorted playfully, and Luciana’s eyes grew even fiercer.

She tried to create variations by changing the form of her sword, aiming for unpredictability, but I was a bad match for her.

Recently, I had experienced all of that in training.

The problem, though, was that I could only best defend against her attacks, not finding a real opportunity to counterattack.

Despite my constant vigilance, there was not a single opening.

The condition of the weapon?

It’s been used since the ancestors of the Speda Ducal Family, but how could a relic, without a speck of rust, become dull just because it’s seen a few battles?

Any lapse in posture?

Of course, Luciana did take heavy breaths from using her energy in large movements and attacks, but that wasn’t decisive.

If I recklessly tried to counterattack, I would likely end up being the one defeated.

Having composed herself, Luciana suddenly broached the subject.

“A proposal?”

“Give up your stolen goods and retreat for now. I won’t chase you. And come secretly to the Speda Ducal House.”

Her blue eyes were intensely serious.

“I won’t question your past crime of stealing the Count’s relic. I’ll even cleanse your identity.”

An overly generous offer for a thief who had turned the nobility’s playground upside down.

“…I’m curious about your reason for this.”

Is it just to ensure the safety of the stolen goods with sweet talk?

Or to hire a thief to check other rival noble houses?

Well.

The Luciana I knew wasn’t that kind of person.

“The North needs warriors with skills like yours. Stop stealing and live honorably – I’ll give you that chance.”

As if to confirm my thoughts, she gave a rather radical reason.

“That’s quite tempting.”

Who would take such a risk to rehabilitate someone?

“Then…!”

“But I refuse.”

I cut her off before she could show any sign of happiness.

It was a ludicrous recruitment proposal that only Luciana could make, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t moved by the warm consideration behind it.

But.

“Why should I do that?”

I don’t intend to criticize such idealistic talk.

Objectively, theft deserves criticism, and morals should be respected in their own right.

If I, known as ‘Frost Mane’, could be acknowledged for my skills instead of my shallow identity and escape the rejection of the North…

My range of actions would greatly expand, and I could do so much more.

However, the crisis Luciana will face is a massive tide that neither her personal strength nor the power of her ducal house can overcome.

The opponent is the crown prince.

The coercion and violence wielded by the most noble bloodline in the empire.

After overcoming that, what next?

Stopping the calamities, including the Demon King of the North, that threaten to destroy the world.

In such a situation, can one afford to be choosy about means and methods?

At least.

Hans Byron, the exclusive servant of the lady, had to be choosy.

That’s why ‘Frost Mane’ had to remain just a thief.

“Even though I was caught by you, my lady, I see no reason to waste my talents when I can roam around the Count’s mansion like my own home and divert all the underworld’s goods.”

Luciana’s eyes narrowed.

The dignified lady, even to an intruder who refused such a generous offer, maintained a certain level of courtesy.

Looking at Luciana wrapped in blue light, I reaffirmed my resolve.

I don’t have the same genius swordsmanship as you.

To stand shoulder to shoulder with you, I must diligently gather relics and build a foundation.

If by doing so,

I can save you and survive myself.

That would be enough.

“…If you intend to punish me, I won’t stop you.”

Luciana raised her sword once again.

The atmosphere changed dramatically, along with the heavy, oppressive air.

“Bury your bones here along with your colleague at the auction house.”

The aura from her sword fluctuated unstably.

A movement never shown in any of our previous sparring sessions.

‘What’s this? Aura release? Or intentional overload?’

But the spectacle she showed surpassed my imagination.

“Haap!”

Aura detached from her sword and floated in the air.

-Swish,

It didn’t stop there; it twisted on its own and formed into the shape of a sword.

“This is…!”

A new technique unknown even to me, despite my extensive knowledge of the game and Luciana.

It meant one thing.

-Try harder. I haven’t used all my power yet.

That technique, unconfirmed in our sparring, unfolded before my eyes.

The aura-turned-sword lunged at me.

-Bang!

“…Ugh. It’s incredibly heavy.”

It wasn’t a mere summoned creature.

Its strength was no different from Luciana’s earlier sword strikes.

Perhaps the only relief was that the summoned sword’s attacks were comparatively simple.

But still, its power couldn’t be underestimated, and while I struggled to fend off just this one sword,

-Uh-oh,

Another one continued to be produced from the aura.

Two, three…

Before I knew it, more than ten new swords floated behind her.

Cold sweat trickled down the back of my neck.

This could be dangerous.

“Haah… Why don’t you try blocking them like before?”

“I respectfully decline.”

Really?!

Struggling to block even one, how am I supposed to handle swords swinging automatically from all directions!

But Luciana’s condition didn’t seem entirely stable either.

Creating swords from aura seemed to have consumed a considerable amount of mana; she noticeably staggered.

‘Enduring is impossible; there’s only one way out.’

Typically, when the summoner of a summoning skill is subdued, the summon is dispelled.

Even this extraordinary ability would be resolved by knocking Luciana out.

Moreover, unlike her previously impeccable form, the mana-depleted Luciana seemed vulnerable enough for a counterattack.

“You underestimated me.”

But her eyes were still fiercely ablaze, only slightly weary.

She steadied her shaking legs and prepared herself.

A slight mistake, and I might be the one in trouble.

-There are times when you’re surrounded by enemies and can’t possibly evade. In those situations, you have to accept some damage.

In this critical situation,

I calmly composed myself.

Perno’s advice was quite helpful.

The moment Luciana inhaled, I charged through the encircling swords.

Chang, Chaeng!

“Ah, ssip!”

Though I sacrificed a bit of my clothes and skin,

Thanks to an excellent relic, only my hand felt slightly numb.

A few steps ahead, Luciana’s eyes widened.

“Indeed, the footwork of a master thief. But compared to my servant, who didn’t suffer even a scratch, your skills are far inferior!”

Luciana, mistaking my injury for clumsiness, took her stance with her rapier.

The best defense is a strong offense.

She seemed to embody this saying, lunging at me with a thrust as I approached.

I could have dodged it.

But evasion isn’t my exclusive forte.

My subsequent attacks would likely be easily blocked or evaded by Luciana.

‘At this rate, I’ll be sandwiched between Luciana in front and the summoned swords behind, leading to defeat.’

So, I had to resolve it immediately.

With an even more perfect parry.

-It’s about adaptation, but the same goes for counterattacks.

You can simultaneously hit your opponent’s weak spot, making it difficult for them to strike back, and restrict their movement.

-That’s difficult. How do you satisfy all that at once?

-As I said, you have to be willing to take some damage.

“…Ugh.”

The cold blade dug into my flesh, and the sound of tearing flesh echoed from her sword, and then from my left arm.

‘Damn that teacher. So painful, teaching such things to his disciple.’

But the sacrifice was worth it; my preparation for the counterattack was successful.

Luciana’s psychological disturbance, having never taken a life,

The exhaustion from using a large technique,

And the contraction of the muscles in the pierced arm.

Due to these factors, her rapier couldn’t be immediately withdrawn.

“…Ah! What’s this?!”

Seizing the moment,

I thrust my sword.

Luciana, realizing too late, tried to withdraw her weapon, but it was already too late.

The original concept of parrying was to relentlessly exploit a moment’s carelessness, delivering a strike that couldn’t be dodged in an instant.

Aiming for a perfect counter, I deflected the attack, but its essence was still offensive.

Once caught in the trap, the outcome was determined.

The first thing I did was to prevent her from escaping.

Just as Perno had done countless times to me, I slid my foot between her legs.

Staggering and losing her balance, she had no means left to protect herself.

“Kuhuk!”

My sword’s blunt edge accurately struck her neck.

[Parrying against a formidable enemy successful]

[Additional proficiency awarded.]

[Skill proficiency reached 100%.]

[Thief’s Footwork (Rank: S) evolves.]

Through the translucent status window, Luciana shuddered for a moment and then collapsed.

“…I told you I win in a serious fight.”

My arm was aching a bit, well, quite a lot actually.

But I managed to protect the loot and successfully subdued Luciana, so it’s all good.

“Isn’t it over there?”

“Just like they say a sandworm comes when called, this worked out well. Please take care of the lady.”

The aftermath could be left to the avid fan who was helplessly watching from behind.

Those passionate eyes were undoubtedly Elizabeth’s.

Given her personality, it was good enough that she didn’t interfere.

I hurried towards the prearranged rendezvous point.

“It doesn’t add up financially. All this and just for a few relics? Need to squeeze out more.”

Despite the pain, the thought of using this as an excuse to claim a larger share brought a smile to my face.

Act 15

Prev I TOC I Next

There are many words to describe the character Linne Londebell.

But if I had to choose just one, it would be “nation’s beauty (傾國之色).”

Linne’s appearance was exceptional.

Her demeanor effortlessly attracted the hearts of men.

Thanks to her personality, which made her a good follower of the protagonist and representative of the player, ‘Hayden Reich,’ she consistently ranked high in popularity polls targeting players.

Indeed, her appearance was remarkable.

If I weren’t Julian, I would have tried to become friends with her immediately.

But that was impossible.

Because I was a disciple who had turned against my master.

Naturally, there could be no friendly relationship between her, who follows my master, Hayden Reich, and me.

Anyway, the reason for her appearance was easy to predict.

The sword sheath I held belonged to ‘Hayden Reich.’

The guest of the secretary’s office must be ‘Hayden Reich.’

“Let’s skip the greetings. Please return the master’s sword.”

As expected.

Linne made a gesture, clearly disliking the idea but asking for the sword back.

“It seems the master has visited the royal palace, hasn’t he?”

“What does that have to do with you?”

“I was just asking, Linne. After all, Sir Hayden is my master too.”

I returned the sword sheath to Linne.

I had no intention of keeping it; I was just curious.

Then, I sat down and waited to be called.

‘It stings.’

The look coming from the far end of the opposite side felt very sharp.

Although trying not to care, crossing my arms and turning my gaze elsewhere, I could occasionally feel glances sneaking a peek at me.

They were trying to seem indifferent, but it must have been very concerning.

‘Given her personality and her background, it couldn’t be helped.’

Linne took great pride in being a disciple of Hayden Reich.

To her, Hayden Reich was everything in her life.

Yet, Julian is someone who has received Hayden’s thoughts and teachings, only to deny them outright.

The one fortunate thing is, unlike with Aileen, I’m not clueless about the situation.

The emotion of Linne seen through the ‘Color of Denial’ was red, signifying ‘anger.’

It was the first time I encountered an emotion other than fear, but it wasn’t disconcerting.

In some ways, knowing the explicit emotion is reassuring because I am well aware of the limits of her attitude and actions that stem from that emotion.

‘As long as I don’t cross the line first, she won’t make a move.’

The most troublesome person to me right now is one who might surprise attack at any time.

In this regard, Linne is not considered a target for caution.

Although she clearly shows hostility towards me, she is just like a barking puppy with a leash on.

Naturally, the leash is Hayden Reich.

As long as she is by his side, Linne can’t lay a hand on me,

even if she dislikes me.

‘Because Hayden Reich wouldn’t want that.’

Although Linne is described as a person who will surpass Julian in the future, she is still just a novice.

“Miss Linne Londebell, Sir Hayden Reich is calling for you.”

The unilateral hostility in silence was ended by a secretary’s office employee.

Linne hugged the sword sheath and stood up.

Whether she didn’t want to be here even for a second, her haste to leave was evident.

“I’ll go ahead, Sir Julian. Let’s make sure we never run into each other again.”

Linne bid farewell with a spiteful tone, just like at the beginning.

“Don’t be too harsh. Aren’t we both disciples of the same master, Miss Linne?” Linne looked at me coldly in response to my answer.

Seems like my act as Julian was spot-on. She left the waiting room without any response.

***

The reason the royal secretary personally called me was as I expected.

In addition to reporting on the mission, it was also to check on me in person.

Hence, the mission report was formally skimmed over, and the conversation ended after exchanging some trivial talk about whether I was okay or if I had any injuries.

After finishing my business, I left the royal palace and headed to the Imperial City.

‘It might be good to complete it now.’

It was a good time to finish the unstable <Moonlight Sword>.

As my weapon had been insufficient so far, it was necessary to get a new one now.

Engraving mana veins with a gemstone on the blade was the most effective method at the moment.

Of course, not just any gemstone would do.

As I had confirmed before, I needed a moonstone, which suited me best.

If it’s as I know, the moonstone would be dealt with by a jeweler.

I should be able to find one if I ask around there.

‘It’s crowded.’

The Adratan Empire was one of the most populous on the continent, so the Imperial City was bustling with people.

Finding my destination among them was not an easy task.

‘Lucky to have a map.’

I took out the map I received from a servant and checked it before moving on.

Julian, who loves to show off, was as interested in jewels as he was in crafts.

It seems he had a favorite jewelry store, as I could get a map with its location drawn on it from a servant.

“Sir Julian, it’s been a while! Are you well?”

As I entered the jewelry store, a middle-aged man wearing a monocle greeted me with a smile.

From his reaction, it was clear I was a regular customer.

“I would like to purchase a moonstone.”

“A moonstone, you say?”

“Yes.”

The owner of the jewelry store looked troubled.

“That is… We do not carry moonstones here.”

“Is that so?”

That’s disappointing.

But I understood.

In this world, moonstones were difficult to come by and had almost no demand.

“That’s unfortunate.”

As I let out a sigh tinged with regret, the shop owner smiled nervously, sweating slightly.

A ‘purple haze’ shimmered above his head.

“But, if it’s a request from Sir Julian, I will try my best to find it.”

“Is that possible?”

“Yes… It will be difficult, but I will take care of it.”

It seems that infamy can be useful at times.

Anyway, this is good.

Honestly, it would have been a hassle if I had to find it myself.

After finishing my business, I returned to my office.

“What is all this?”

The desk was piled high with various documents.

There were not only work documents that needed to be processed but also personal documents brought from the mansion, such as utility bills and registration fees for some bizarre art association.

‘What kind of art association is this…’

I tossed the unnecessary documents into the trash bin.

At that moment, Razlot entered with a knock.

“Sir Julian! Oh, Commander Odwin is calling for you!”

Odwin? I couldn’t tell why, but after acknowledging, I headed to the commander’s office.

“Julian, you have a mission.”

Again?

I’ve barely returned.

When I asked what it was, she said there was information about a demon appearing in the ‘Imperial City’s slums.’

The order was to investigate, and I felt something was off.

“Do we have any reason to care about the lowly slums?”

I asked in a deliberately harsh tone.

Since when did the royal family care about that area?

The appearance of a demon was a problem, but it wasn’t causing immediate trouble.

An investigation could very well end up being just suspicion.

Especially since it’s in the slums.

The royal family doesn’t pay any attention to that area.

They would only move if a real demon appeared.

“I thought it was strange, too. The royal family doesn’t care about the slums.”

It seems Odwin had similar thoughts and had already inquired.

The slums are like remnants of the empire forcibly annexing other countries.

People who don’t follow the empire’s dominant culture or religion, and even those of different ethnicities, are refused entry into the city (都) and end up congregating in the eastern slums.

“There are so many people who would oppose if the royal family reached out to the slums. It doesn’t seem like they have any intention to, though.”

“Then, why?”

“It seems like it was requested by Sir Hayden Reich. To verify the truth behind the rumors of the demon’s appearance, the royal family has requested someone to be dispatched.”

Ugh.

As the protagonist’s name came up, I inwardly sighed.

Getting involved with him at this point was not good.

Already not fully established as Julian, suddenly getting mixed up with the story’s protagonist would be more of a loss than a gain, especially given their relationship isn’t the best according to the setting.

‘But I can’t just outright refuse.’

Since it’s an official request, refusing isn’t a good look.

After all, if I were truly Julian, I wouldn’t care much about being involved with the protagonist.

“We can’t send a knight order as it would draw too much attention, so it was decided to send someone from ‘Closed Eyes.’ It’s unlikely that Sir Hayden will come himself.”

“Is someone else coming, not the master?”

“Most likely. According to the information from the secretary’s office, that seems to be the case.”

Odwin’s words somewhat eased my mind.

But someone else is coming?

Our protagonist isn’t someone who delegates tasks to others and acts organizationally.

Does this mean…

‘They’re thinking of giving Linne some experience?’

That must be it.

After my fallout with Julian, he appointed Linne as his protégé and has been devoting all his efforts to her training.

Suddenly, her words when we parted came to mind. –

‘I’ll go ahead, Sir Julian. Let’s ensure we never meet again.’

Saying such things, and here we are meeting again.

***

“I thought we agreed never to meet again.”

Linne Londebell spoke in a disgruntled voice.

Without looking, I knew her expression would be contorted.

“How could life always go as one desires?”

“I don’t want to hear it. You’re not needed for this patrol mission. You don’t have to follow. No, please don’t follow.”

“This is a task personally requested by the master. Are you saying we should ignore it?”

“That, that’s…”

Her brusque demeanor softened.

She had nothing to say when the protagonist was brought up.

Truly, it was a magical word.

With Linne quieted, I reviewed the contents of the orders again.

The location was the slums, with suspicions of a demon appearance; we were to investigate.

It was the same as what I’d heard beforehand.

“But why is it just the two of us? If it’s a demon subjugation mission, shouldn’t soldiers accompany us?”

“It’s not exactly subjugation but an investigation. They probably don’t want to cause unnecessary commotion.”

“….”

She suddenly fell silent, so I turned my head.

It wouldn’t be strange for Linne, as I knew her, to say more.

“I never imagined you could say something so sensible.”

Was my image that bad?

How recklessly had I acted for such a standard opinion to elicit that reaction…

With a slight sigh, I started walking, and Linne followed with a disgruntled face.

‘Anyway, I hope this mission ends with just an investigation.’

I haven’t acquired proper power yet. Just like the last escort mission, but…

Given that Linne, the protagonist’s disciple who is hostile towards me, is by my side, I need to be even more cautious than before.

Honestly, I hope we don’t have to resort to ‘subjugation.’

Whistle –

While checking the location written on the directive, Linne passed by me and started to lead the way.

She looked at a sign and attempted to turn right.

“Miss Linne.”

“What?”

“That’s not the way. The slums are a maze of illegal and unauthorized extensions, with roads twisted and turned. Relying on the signs will only get us lost.”

She stopped walking and looked at me intently, her suspicion clear.

I tried to give her a reassuring smile, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that was a mistake.

“Then why is this sign here? I’d think it’s more accurate than the words of Sir Julian, who isn’t from here.”

Linne’s animosity only deepened in front of my villainous smile.

“I’m aware that you want to surpass the master’s fame. That’s why you’re participating in this mission, isn’t it? You want to spread rumors that you’ve trampled over the current Sword Saint’s favorite disciple.”

“One should know to separate personal feelings from work. What do you do if personal feelings interfere with the task?”

With that, Linne started walking again.

Accusing me of letting personal feelings interfere with work…

I had a lot to say but decided to let it go.

It’s not like she would believe me anyway.

Anyway, the correct path is to the left.

This eastern slum district is like the ‘Wall of Despair’ that players of <Let’s Kill the Demon Lord> would feel at least once.

The maze-like twisted roads here have frustrated many users.

Of course, having gone through several playthroughs, I know this place like the back of my hand.

‘From Hayden Reich’s perspective, she was quite adorable.’

Everything she did, perking up her ears, jotting down stories, her demeanor was truly cute.

Of course, from my current perspective, she’s nothing but a nuisance who retorts to everything I say.

Watching Linne walk away, I brushed my hair back once and slowly started to follow her.

“Here, take this. It’s the list of items for this auction.”

Elizabeth handed over a document filled with various relics and names of elixirs.

As expected of the Frontal family. Given their secret support of the underworld, it seemed they had obtained this information in advance.

“Let’s see. A coral branch staff, among other things.”

“That’s mine.”

“Of course. Would I ask a collaborator to help out empty-handed?”

I skimmed the document from top to bottom.

The Frostroot I was after seemed to have been pushed to the last day as part of inventory clearance.

‘That’s good.’

Now it seemed I could proceed with my plans more relaxed.

“And this is a map of the auction house’s interior. It’s better to understand it beforehand. They blindfold the participants and lead them in.”

“I see.”

To be honest, this information was not particularly meaningful to me.

‘I’ve been in and out of this game so many times.’

I casually glanced over at Perno.

He too seemed uninterested in the map, lounging on the sofa, idly playing with his ear.

“…What’s with that reaction?”

“No, it’s useful information. Definitely.”

But the moment I unfolded the rolled-up map, I had to retract my previous thoughts.

It contained not just the building’s layout.

The scale and arrangement of the private soldiers,

A list of hired mercenaries,

The storage locations of each relic and the positions of the guards………

All these details were included in the map.

“I didn’t expect Georg to be there.”

A familiar name.

A mercenary rumored to have survived against a horde of monsters alone, and considered a top contender in martial contests.

His name was also on this map.

“Since he’s a mercenary, he’s been hired for money. The nobles have high expectations of him.”

With this information, planning an escape route and blocking unexpected variables would be much easier.

“Thank you. This is a big help.”

“Your attitude is quite different from before. Fine. It’s a deal, after all. And for our Frontal family, there are reasons this auction must fail.”

Elizabeth said that the Frontal Count’s family almost monopolizes the northern supply routes, but they are not invulnerable. People’s desire for money always invites challenges to impregnable fortresses. This time was no different. In fact, the main sponsor of this auction was a competing family with its own trade guild, attempting to usurp the Frontal Count’s influence in the black market. She whispered softly with a polite smile, “It would be quite useful if we could deal with competitors using the help of demons and thieves.”

Well, that’s the official stance, anyway. The talk of doing it for the family was just for show.

“You’re not being honest.”

“…About what?”

“Never mind. If you think about it, it’s a fair trade.”

I turned my head away from her cold, piercing gaze.

‘I hit the nail on the head.’

The real reason is probably due to the contract I made with her long before. Elizabeth couldn’t refuse my deal, given the progress of her relationship with Luciana and to keep me in check. She must believe the day of my betrayal will come sooner as my infamy as a ‘demon’ grows.

“Tsk. It would be nice if you got caught by the guards there.”

“Wouldn’t that trouble you too? Our previous contract would be nullified.”

“You never lose in arguments, do you?”

Unfortunately for her, what she wishes for will not happen.

Anyway, the day of action is in three days. We should get more drinks, even though it’s a little unreliable.

***

“Liza, you’re late.”

“Sorry. I had something to take care of.”

The black market was busier than usual. As it was the last day of the auction, when the real prized items appear, many customers had flocked to it.

“Lucy, are you eyeing anything?”

“I don’t know. Not really.”

In fact, Luciana wasn’t there to buy anything. She just followed her father’s wishes as the head of the family.

“They are all nobles.”

Luciana muttered as if sighing. From their walking to the way they held wine glasses, everything was noble-like. It was hard to identify them due to the masks, but they all had blue blood.

“It’s impossible for vagabonds to afford the auction.”

Elizabeth, taking a leisurely observant stance, also picked up a glass filled with a beverage.

The place was terribly uncomfortable, with the ugly stares following her friend’s delicate movements.

– Cling.

The clear sound of glass clinking echoed. But, they had to spend quite a long time there.

“Are you picking a gift for your fiancé?”

“Well, you could say that.”

As she turned her head, her shy demeanor…

Luciana fiddled with her stiffly curled lips.

‘Oh dear. Instead of blessing the engagement of a longtime friend and loyal servant.’

A glance revealed an unknown emotion.

For some reason, a less than pleasant feeling returned.

“Thank you for waiting! Ladies and gentlemen who have graced us with your presence!”

Just then, the auctioneer, breaking through Luciana’s complex thoughts, began his opening remarks, drawing everyone’s attention.

“It’s about to start.”

“I’m tired of waiting.”

The auctioneer smoothly continued, against the backdrop of the nobles’ buzzing chatter, which served as background music.

“The atmosphere is heating up. Now, let me introduce the first auction item!”

If everything went according to the original plan, the least valuable item would be presented first to raise expectations for the more valuable items in the latter half.

Thus, participants expected something like Frostroot or flashy but unsubstantial relics to appear.

“…Hmm? What’s this event about?”

However, Luciana rubbed her eyes in disbelief at the next item brought up.

Inside the transparent box, there was seemingly nothing.

“What’s this? Is the organizer playing a joke?”

“Bring the right item, quickly!”

Despite the audience’s complaints, the auctioneer just smiled calmly.

“Please calm down, ladies and gentlemen, the item is right before you.”

– Boom!

Suddenly, loud explosions erupted throughout the audience area. They were sound grenades with no lethal power, but the noise was enough to instill fear in everyone.

“This is the flamboyant debut of the Sand Mole in the north! No returns!”

The auctioneer’s voice suddenly changed to a husky middle-aged man’s.

Perno, the Sand Mole.

As his infamous name, known throughout the Manhet Empire and beyond the west, was announced, the nobles jumped to their feet.

“The Sand Mole?”

“Why is the monster that even the Duke of Roberck couldn’t catch here?”

Perno, grinning, looked around the noisy stage below.

This was his favorite moment.

The fact that he only stole from noble families after penetrating their heavy security was proof of his skill.

But he was only called a phantom thief because he liked to make a flashy appearance following an explosion.

“Do Westerners have no fear? Does our security look like a joke to you?”

Perno grinned, baring his teeth, now that he had successfully captured everyone’s attention.

“Ah, so you’re that Georg, huh?”

– Click, click, click.

Behind the black-armored mercenary, whom his disciple had previously mentioned, a line of the nobles’ private soldiers formed.

“Huh, you have a good spirit. Relying on numbers, huh?”

As expected of a nobles-led auction, their response was swift.

But,

With just a few tools, such a security force would easily fall into disarray.

“Aaah!”

“Watch out for mines! There are traps everywhere…!”

Sleeping gas, flashbangs, smoke grenades…

The soldiers climbing towards the auction stage fell one by one into the traps that had been set in advance.

Perno whistled proudly.

“How cowardly!”

“I didn’t set any lethal traps, but isn’t it impressive? You made it all the way to where I am.”

Georg, now one of the few remaining including himself, clenched his fist in frustration.

“Be prepared!”

“Hmph. You seem to be mistaken if you think you can defeat a rookie like me.”

– Bang!

Another explosion echoed.

This time,

Fragments flew past people in both the audience and the auction hall.

“Aaah! A bomb exploded right next to us…!”

“Move! Do you know who I am?”

“Why should I care? Just get lost!”

“My lord, where are you?”

The scene was absolute chaos.

The noise from the repeated explosions, along with the sight of soldiers falling like leaves in the wind, sent the nobles into a panic.

“We should probably evacuate.”

Elizabeth grabbed her friend’s arm to pull her away.

However, Luciana remained motionless in her seat, even as everyone else fled from the participant seats.

“…Lucy?”

“This is strange.”

All the auction items have been stolen? That can’t be.

Given their value, auction items are moved under the watchful eyes of many soldiers as a security measure.

But to say that in such a short time all the items were stolen without any soldier noticing?

“It’s a trap.”

Luciana, with her calm demeanor, caught sight of the thief screaming at the top of his lungs.

“Hahaha. Who dares challenge me, the Sand Mole? This so-called mercenary Georg is nowhere near enough!”

A diversion.

An ostentatious ruckus to capture everyone’s attention.

The thief, gathering all the guards in one place, resembled a tactic where one should never chase after the decoy.

“Lucy, the high-nobility evacuation route is this way…?”

“No. I’m going the other way. You go ahead.”

Luciana stood up, taking her sword in hand.

Elizabeth, sweating and trying to dissuade her, but there was no time for that.

Luciana had easily deduced that the real danger now was with the auction items.

‘I refuse to be passive in this situation.’

Although known as a phantom thief, he was essentially a criminal.

There was no reason to leave a potential threat to the safety and peace of her lord’s subjects unchecked.

She, as a duchess and a patron, used the information she received to head towards the auction house’s storeroom.

“Ma’am, this area is off-limits. Please return due to the emergency situation.”

A soldier, his helmet pressed down firmly on his head, was also seen loading various stolen goods onto a wagon.

“Identify yourself.”

“Eek! After hearing the news of the phantom thief’s intrusion, my seniors tasked me with moving the luggage.”

When threatened with a sword, he stammered out his circumstances in a voice full of fear and surprise.

However, Luciana could only snort in response to his reaction. They were indeed audacious.

“How absurd. I won’t ask twice. Reveal your true identity now.”

Considering the auction house was turned upside down by Sand Mole, it’s one thing not to be drafted for that.

But.

The seniors told him to move the luggage? And to just one person?

If the commander had made a rational decision, on what basis would they trust a soldier with stolen goods?

The reliability that he can be trusted with anything? A sense of legality that screams no to wrongdoing?

Well. Without someone watching, there would be no one who would refuse money that falls into their own hands.

That was Luciana’s conclusion after observing people from the underworld for the past week, following her father’s orders.

Therefore, the best strategy as a commander would be to maintain camaraderie and have them watch each other.

But to move these stolen goods alone?

“Sand Mole is often touted in the newspapers for insisting on working alone. Seems that’s not entirely true.”

“……”

“Refusing to answer someone who is practically a commander and a noble is not the Northern soldier’s way. Will you give me your answer?”

Like Hans did, she mocked his opponent beyond tolerance.

At the same time, she listened carefully.

Wondering if there could be any clue to guess his identity.

“Heh, who would have thought I’d be caught.”

A faint laugh leaked from within the helmet.

“You have good insight, Lady.”

As if the previously scared soldier’s voice was a lie, the atmosphere changed.

The man who had stepped back slightly from the pointed sword took off his helmet, revealing a golden mask underneath.

The stranger, who threw off his armor as well, was shrouded in shadows, and his robust male voice turned into an indistinguishable crackling noise.

“You…!”

Luciana had indirectly encountered her opponent before.

About a month ago, in the newspaper that reported the attack on the Count’s house.

“Frost Mane…”

“Oh, it’s an honor that the treasure of the North knows my name.”

Of course, she couldn’t forget someone who had been the subject of conversation with Hans and was secretly mentioned at social gatherings.

“Excuse me, but could you step aside from my path, Lady? I too need to make a living.”

“Hmph. You jest.”

Luciana quietly took her stance.

A clear aura flowed along the sword of her ancestors.

“You and your accomplices will not escape summary execution here today.”

“Huh. Do you think Sand Mole is an easy target?”

“Sorry, but I assure you, someone much stronger than that will overpower you.”

The phantom thief, a malevolent being threatening the nobility’s status and wealth and bringing chaos to the hearts of the lord’s subjects.

She had no intention of watching internal strife with demons and monsters at the forefront.

Neither she nor her father.

The stranger shrugged his shoulders.

“Ahaha. Well, why worry about comrades now? My own life is in immediate danger.”

“Surrender peacefully. Then, perhaps your sentence could be reduced from execution to conscription.”

“My word. Sorry, but I absolutely detest conscription, so I must respectfully decline.”

Then, there was no more room for talk.

Almost simultaneously, without anyone moving first, their swords clashed in the air.

Lee Min-gyu, the head of the Story Team, was enjoying a rare tea time with Director Lee Hae-seok.

Suddenly, Min-gyu thought about a recent event.

Director Hae-seok had argued that Hyun-soo, a user, should have his divine custom crafting skill nerfed after he unlocked it.

However, after seeing the half-finished Crescent Moon sword that Hyun-soo created with emergency crafting, Hae-seok stopped mentioning any need to regulate Hyun-soo.

“Director, may I ask you something?”

“What is it?”

“Why haven’t you been talking about balance issues since Hyun-soo crafted the Crescent Moon sword?”

“It’s about talent. Where in the world would a badly balanced game concern itself with talent?”

“I see. Lately, it seems you have high expectations for Hyun-soo.”

Min-gyu could see Hae-seok’s growing interest in Hyun-soo whenever they met with the Special User Management Team.

“What’s Hyun-soo up to these days?”

“What has he crafted this time?”

“What? He made a legendary-grade sword? Impressive.”

Hae-seok’s expression was like a child hearing a delightful story.

Hae-seok chuckled and sipped his tea.

“I am indeed very excited. You know why, right? How a nonexistent Crescent Moon sword in the game Ares actually appeared and its effects were just like a real Crescent Moon sword.”

Min-gyu, the head of the Story Team, smiled slightly.

“Even though it doesn’t exist in the game, the supercomputer Ares applied the effects of the Crescent Moon sword as it deemed most fitting based on its information.”

“Indeed, it’s amazing. Most of Ares’ artifacts have predefined shapes, effects, and abilities.”

Being the Story Team, they knew this best.

“But Hyun-soo is different. He’s the only user capable of creating unique artifacts with his own effects.”

Hae-seok was thrilled by the existence of such a user.

“Team Leader Lee, you’ve heard countless tales since childhood, right? About legendary weapons and armor.”

“Of course.”

Many people have heard of them.

Excalibur, Mjolnir, Gram, and more.

There are also several in Korea.

One of them is the Cresent Moon sword, and others like Haemosu’s Dragon Light Sword or Admiral Yi Sun-shin’s Twin Dragon Sword.

Hae-seok, excited just thinking about it, finally explained why.

“I’m dying of curiosity.”

The reason for his high expectations for Hyun-soo.

“Can he actually craft any of those legendary items?”

That was the question.

***

As Hyun-soo started crafting in the forge, he thought about a shield he had designed.

The shield resembled one from mythology.

While it wasn’t an exact replica, its effects were similar.

‘The shield turns enemies to stone in an instant.’

It was known to be used by Athena, the goddess of war, or even Zeus, the supreme god, featuring a woman’s head.

However, blending his unique knowledge into the design, he made it more original.

‘Uncle Hyuk-su needs other effects, too.’

Suddenly, Hyun-soo remembered his childhood.

Numerous mythical and legendary armaments.

Some existed, others didn’t.

-Dad, I want to make that!

Though it seemed absurd, his father helped him make them.

‘Of course, they weren’t the actual items.’

Because they were mostly nonexistent.

‘Maybe if they really existed, they would have been made like this.’

His father hammered out armaments just as he had imagined.

And young Hyun-soo kept crafting them as he grew, driven by fun and the excitement of how well he could replicate them.

He must have made dozens over the years.

Now, on the third day of crafting, he was nearing completion.

After the final polishing, he engraved the character ‘Hyun’ (現) on the shield, completing it.

[A divine custom-crafted artifact is completed.]

[The experience and knowledge of a blacksmith beyond a master greatly increases the effectiveness.]

[Effectiveness is 98%.]

[It’s of unique grade.]

[You have crafted an artifact closest to legendary.]

[Name the shield.]

[The title ‘God Blacksmith’ shines.]

[All stat increases due to once-a-week artifact crafting are applied.]

[Gain 50 dexterity.]

[Gain 100 fame.]

[Shield Mastery Lv.1 proficiency increases by 19%.]

As Hyun-soo examined the completed shield, he felt a twinge of regret.

“Ah, what a pity…!”

The notification clearly stated that he had crafted an artifact closest to legendary.

‘I really wanted to gift Uncle Hyuk-su a legendary artifact…’

Even so, wouldn’t Hyuk-su appreciate this artifact as well?

Hyun-soo tore the parchment to use the gifting feature.

‘I included instructions, so it shouldn’t be hard to use, right?’

Rustle-

Hyun-soo watched a hawk take off with the parchment in its talons.

***

[A gift from Hyun-soo has arrived.]

Standing at the entrance of the Salamander dungeon, Bark saw a hawk flying towards him.

Extending his arm, the hawk landed gracefully on it.

[Hyun-soo: Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out as high-grade as I wanted, but I hope you find it useful.]

Feeling down, Bark couldn’t help but smile.

Somehow, communicating with the guy always lifted his spirits.

‘Sure, what could a level 59 blacksmith really make?’

Bark, a high-ranking player, saw Ares as a diversion in his dull life.

He had met countless blacksmiths, even the country’s top ones.

Yet, this gift from Hyun-soo felt more valuable than anything they offered.

‘Heh, he must have sweated over making this for me. Let’s see.’

Bark grinned and checked the item’s details.

(Hyun’s Eighth Custom-Made Shield)

Grade: Unique

Durability: 12,000/12,000

Attack: 251

Thorns Damage: 111

Defense: 401

Requirement: Level 150+ Tank Class

Special Abilities:

· 201% Resistance to Fire Attributes

· 247% Increased Defense against Fire Monsters

· 222% Increased Attack against Fire Monsters

· Passive Skill: Freezing Gaze

· Active Skill: Frost Thorns

· Active Skill: Wave of Frost

Description: Hyun’s eighth custom-made shield, close to legendary, crafted with a certain shield in mind. If the materials had been more similar, it might have been a complete shield.

Bark looked puzzled for a moment.

‘Is this an error?’

He reopened the artifact’s information.

But the details remained unchanged.

‘Unique…?’

In the game Ares, user-crafted unique artifacts are rare.

Especially high-level uniques, with fewer than 50 in the country.

Most were dropped by mobs or made by NPCs.

‘How could a level 59…?’

Then Bark checked the time.

[1 hour 37 minutes 32 seconds left to complete the job quest.]

He was running out of time. His planned dungeon raid with the anticipated shield was around 1 hour 40 minutes.

Without further thought, he entered the dungeon.

[You have entered the Salamander Dungeon.]

[Last attempt at the job quest.]

‘As soon as I enter, a swarm of salamanders will attack. Got to deal with them first.’

Salamanders are giant, flaming lizards of level 260.

Bark was ready to attack them immediately upon entry.

‘Estimated time: 10 minutes.’

The moment he stepped in, a salamander leaped at him from the entrance.

Instinctively, he raised his shield.

A strange sound followed.

Crack-

[Freezing Gaze.]

[Frosts monsters with fire attributes over 60 levels higher than the user.]

It was the sound of something freezing.

Crash-

And then hitting the ground.

Baffled, Bark lowered his shield.

One of the salamanders had turned into a complete block of ice.

“…?”

Surprised, Bark spotted another salamander.

As he turned the shield towards it.

“Gasp…!”

He slowly moved the shield from left to right, facing the approaching salamanders.

Upon seeing the shield.

Crack-

They all froze.

“This is unbelievable.”

What he anticipated would take 10 minutes, took only 1.

He had heard about the Freezing Gaze skill from the notification, but dismissed it as too unrealistic.

And this shield resembled one from mythology.

“Aegis…?”

The shield called Aegis in Greek mythology, featuring Medusa’s head.

The effects were different, though. The real Aegis turned to stone, this one just froze.

Bark knew he didn’t have time to spare. Speeding through the dungeon would maximize his rewards.

As he ventured deeper, he encountered flaming archers.

There were five of them.

[Flaming Archer Lv.301]

Their arrows were slow but ignited anything they touched.

Then, the instructions appeared.

[Please press the button on the grip with your thumb.]

The manual provided guidance based on the situation.

Bark followed the instructions.

Click

At that moment, eight spikes ejected from the front of the circular shield.

They moved like long serpents, swiftly embedding into the five archers.

Fizz-Fizz-Crackle-

The archers rapidly froze.

‘Incredible…’

But Bark shook his head.

‘Is it a one-time use?’

[Press the button twice to retract.]

Another notification.

Click-Click-

The spikes retracted with a clanking sound, returning to the shield.

Bark reviewed the artifact’s details again, noticing previously unseen information.

Blacksmith Hyun (現).

But he already knew, having seen the engraving on the artifact.

Bark pressed on quickly.

[You’re rapidly progressing through the Salamander Dungeon!]

Memories of his encounters with Hyun-soo flashed through his mind.

Their first meeting.

‘Blacksmiths still exist? Amazing, have you learned blacksmithing too?’

Their second meeting.

‘Can you return the forge?’

Their third meeting.

‘I hoped you would survive.’

As he reminisced, Bark soon faced the boss monster.

[Boss Monster Appears!]

[Avatar of the Fire Queen Lv.319]

‘I’m proud of you, Hyun-soo. So very proud.’

Bark smiled, holding the unbelievable shield, and engaged in battle with the Fire Queen’s avatar.

A boss monster, one of the eight on the continent, her avatars scattered throughout the world, each a being engulfed in flames.

Even her avatars possessed immense power, typical of the Salamander Dungeon’s boss.

Yet, the shield withstood her fiery breath.

The seemingly impossible conquest of the Salamander Dungeon became reality.

The more he understood the shield’s effects and the power of the artifact, the more thrilling it felt.

[You have hunted the Avatar of the Fire Queen.]

The notification appeared as the Fire Queen cooled down.

The boss monster, one of the continent’s eight, now freezing over.

“…Who crafted that shield?”

No answer came, and she furrowed her brows.

“Speak, or you’ll regret it!”

Her main body was dangerous. If she pursued him, he might have to quit the game.

But Bark couldn’t betray Hyun-soo to save himself.

Threatened, Bark smirked.

“Try me.”

“Aren’t you afraid? Why won’t you reveal the blacksmith’s name!”

Why, indeed?

It wasn’t just because Hyun-soo was a blacksmith or because he held great value.

‘He’s my person.’

That was the reason. Now, Hyun-soo was important to Bark.

In the face of threats, Bark silently turned and walked away.

The dungeon crumbled, and the Fire Queen’s avatar completely froze over.

Hyun-soo couldn’t hide his astonishment.

‘A vassal?’

In the game, a vassal refers to an NPC servant, typically retained by guild masters who own territories.

There were various ways to acquire a vassal.

One could hire them for life with money or receive them as a gift from the lord of a territory or other NPCs.

‘I’ve never heard of someone volunteering to be a vassal, and to think they have the potential to become a legendary miner?’

Hyun-soo quickly regained his composure amidst his confusion.

‘If the miner becomes my vassal, could it be…?’

He weighed the efficiency of mining ores himself and working as a blacksmith.

He concluded it was a loss for him to go to the mines personally.

‘It’s a pity, surely. There will be opportunities to obtain special minerals, but I’ll miss out on them.’

However, Banya, who was kneeling, spoke up.

“I will do my best to mine the minerals you need in your stead, Master Hyun-soo.”

“Please stand up, Banya.”

Hyun-soo helped him to his feet by grabbing his shoulders.

“I still have a lot to learn.”

In reality, Hyun-soo’s level was just 80.

He needed to be at least level 100 to establish a guild.

He couldn’t roam around with Banya without having settled his own guild and base.

“You’re not going to accept me, are you….”

Banya’s eyes trembled with unease. Hyun-soo sensed a deep longing in those eyes, a desire to be with him.

“No, that’s not it. I’m simply inadequate. Once I decide on a base, I’ll send you a message. Come to that place then.”

Banya’s face brightened at those words.

Ding!

[You have taken Banya as your vassal.]

[You can now access Banya’s information.]

(Banya)

Grade: Epic

Type: Vassal

Level: 165

Attack Power: 504

Defense: 430

Mining Power: 1,672

Special Abilities:

·Passive Skill: Special Minerals.

·Passive Skill: Tireless Miner.

·Active Skill: Mineral Detection.

·Active Skill: Enhanced Mineral Effect.

Potential: 111

Current Experience: 19%

Description: Destined to become the most special miner in the world. Grows much faster and has a higher growth limit compared to other miners.

When an NPC becomes a vassal, their grade is determined.

It’s not just based on level.

Their special powers, skills in their field, potential, and various other factors are considered.

‘Banya is currently Epic.’

Vassal grades range from Normal, Rare, Epic, Unique, to Legendary.

Hyun-soo thought he’d be at least Unique grade since he’s said to be a potential legend.

That was disappointing, but seeing his potential changed his mind.

‘Potential indicates how much one can grow.’

The higher the potential, the higher the limit.

‘As far as I know, a normal vassal’s potential is around 30.’

Rare is 50.

Epic is 70.

Unique is 90.

‘111, that’s incredible…’

Banya, though currently just Epic, possessed unbelievable potential.

Of course, not everyone with high potential becomes a legend.

According to something he read, even those with a potential over 100 often fail to reach that level.

This depends on various external factors and circumstances, so it remains to be seen whether Banya will become a legend.

‘Are we growing together?’

Hyun-soo smiled lightly.

Then Banya, now his first vassal, asked with a hopeful expression.

“When can I come to you, Master Hyun-soo?”

“It won’t be long.”

Confidently, Banya replied, “Then I’ll be mining minerals for you here until I see you.”

The moment he became a vassal, Banya seemed to think only of Hyun-soo.

And Banya was no fool.

‘The more exceptional minerals Master Hyun-soo uses to craft artifacts, the more my name will rise.’

Soon, Banya set off to mine minerals for Hyun-soo.

And a day later.

Rumble…

Hyun-soo was amazed at the ores poured out by the miners.

[You have acquired 415 iron ores.]

[You have acquired 51 Cold Iron.]

The value of the minerals brought by the miners totaled about 5 million won.

‘I won’t have to worry about Cold Iron for a while. I should sell all the iron ores.’

Selling just the iron ores right away could net about 2 million won. Then, Hyun-soo looked puzzled.

“Where did Chief Miner Lek go?”

“He’s still mining millennium iron.”

Three hours later, Lek found Hyun-soo with a look of deep emotion. Thanks to the pickaxe lent by Hyun-soo, Lek had mined millennium iron that he couldn’t before. Excitedly, he said,

“Wait till you see, this millennium iron is not just ordinary. It’s been buried for over 6,000 years, hardening and absorbing cold in the ground all that time.”

Lek carefully handed over the wrapped millennium iron to Hyun-soo.

[You have acquired Millennium Iron (千年寒鐵).]

(Millennium Iron)

Grade: Unique

Requirement: Blacksmith level 300 or higher

Difficulty: Very High.

Special Abilities

· Fire Resistance Increased by 91%

· Ice Skills Upgraded to Unique Level.

· Sword Sharpness Increased by 150%.

· Sword Skill Attack Power Increased by 58%.

· Durability Upgraded to Infinite.

Description: An iron that has been buried for 6,000 years. Though it shares a name, it is incomparable to ordinary millennium iron.

‘Amazing?’

Hyun-soo was impressed. Century iron was Epic grade, and this was Unique.

Century iron’s specs were:

Fire Resistance 56%, Ice Skills Upgraded to Epic, Sword Sharpness Increased by 112%, Durability Infinite.

‘But this one far surpasses that.’

A smile formed on Hyun-soo’s lips. With this amount, he could make the shield Uncle Hyuk-su talked about.

“Thank you for everything.”

Chief Miner Lek and the other miners showed a hint of sadness as they parted from Hyun-soo.

“Feel free to come back anytime.”

“Will do.”

Before leaving the Frost Mine, Hyun-soo handed the Damascus longsword to Banya, now his vassal.

“Banya, I’d like you to use this.”

Banya was sincerely moved.

But Hyun-soo had another thought.

‘With this Damascus longsword, Banya’s mining efficiency will double, at least.’

Whether Banya knew this or not, he was visibly touched.

“Master Hyun-soo, your generosity knows no bounds. I’m so happy to serve you.”

[Banya’s Loyalty Increases.]

[You gain 1 Charisma.]

Finally, Hyun-soo entered the warp portal to exit the Frost Mine.

Exiting, he headed straight to the forge.

Before starting the creation process, Hyun-soo sent a whisper to Hyuk-su.

[Hyun-soo: It’s Hyun-soo. I’m starting the shield production now. Should be ready in about 3 days. ^_^]

[Bark: Thank you. ^^]

With a small smile, Hyun-soo rechecked the specs of the artifact Hyuk-su wanted.

[A shield with high fire resistance, and if it could have an offensive capability too, that would be great. It should not melt even in high heat. Would be nice if it could freeze everything within a 2-meter radius.]

Honestly, the requirements for a single shield were quite demanding.

Firstly, the shield Hyuk-su wanted needed to have both ‘defense and offense’ functionalities.

‘This would be tough for ordinary blacksmiths, wouldn’t it?’

It seems to require adaptability in both defense and offense.

‘I guess it’s my first time making proper armor.’

Looking at the finished blueprint of the shield, Hyun-soo smiled.

Starting the creation, he smiled again.

‘I want to gift Uncle Hyuk-su a best item.’

He was Hyun-soo’s greatest benefactor, after all.

Fortunately, Hyun-soo was confident that the shield he was creating would be the best one could imagine.

Hyun-soo started increasing the temperature of the furnace.

***

After exchanging whispers with Hyun-soo, Bark smiled slightly. However, his expression darkened while whispering with someone else. He was currently in a conversation with Vane, the blacksmith ranked 11th.

[Vane: I must inform you, Mr. Bark, the shield you requested is absolutely impossible with my current knowledge.]

Bark’s face crumpled in disappointment.

[Vane: I am the 11th ranked blacksmith, and I’ll explain why it’s impossible.]

Bark mulled over his words.

[Vane: Your requirements are too demanding. The shield needs high fire resistance, must not melt, should have strong basic defense, and also needs the ability to attack enemies.]

The absurdity was evident even from the whispers.

[Vane: Even the top-ranked blacksmith can’t make it. The biggest reason is the inability to incorporate all the desired effects. The second reason is that it’s too innovative a creation.]

[Bark: What do you mean by too innovative?]

[Vane: The reason this shield is impossible to create is that there’s no existing blueprint for such a shield in Ares.]

Bark had sought a blueprint for such a shield, even willing to pay a high price, but as Vane said, it didn’t exist.

[Vane: Ares is, after all, a game. Artifacts are born from set frameworks, predetermined blueprints. But in this case, there’s no blueprint, so it would require a blacksmith’s experience, knowledge, and adaptability. Do you think there’s a user capable of that level of knowledge and adaptability?]

Vane hit a nerve with his blunt truth.

[Vane: I believe you’re being stubborn, Mr. Bark. Our guild, Hwarang, ranked number one in South Korea, eagerly awaits a member like you, an unofficial ranker and tanker.]

Vane’s guild, Hwarang, had over a thousand members and numerous rankers. They had consistently invited Bark, known for his unofficial ranking and tanking skills.

Yet, Vane advised,

[Vane: If there’s a blacksmith capable of making such an item, I suggest joining the guild where he belongs.]

Bark’s pupils quivered. This suggestion impacted him the most.

‘A blacksmith recommending to join a guild for another blacksmith? And this coming from the 11th ranked blacksmith?’

The weight of these words sunk in deeply.

‘So it’s truly an impossible creation…?’

Bark sighed. Completing the Salamander’s dungeon and the job quest would grant him a tanker-exclusive artifact.

‘I could reach the unofficial rank of number two tanker with it.’

However, understanding Vane’s words, Bark decided to give up on getting such a shield made. Instead, he resolved to purchase a high fire-resistant armor set and shield from the auction house.

Three days later, Bark’s face twisted in frustration.

‘Damn, there’s not a single satisfying armor set or shield.’

He had already attempted the Salamander dungeon multiple times. Moreover, today was the last day for the quest, so he had to enter no matter what.

‘Am I going to lose this job quest?’

Job quests, if failed, could never be attempted again. Thus, Bark stood dejectedly in front of the Salamander’s dungeon, with a timer visible only to him floating above.

[Time left to complete the job quest: 2 hours and 32 seconds.]

‘Should I try one last attempt?’

But he quickly shook his head. It was a sure death. He wouldn’t make it halfway before dying and potentially losing levels.

Just then.

[A gift from Hyun-soo has arrived.]

A notification appeared.

Act 14

Prev I TOC I Next

After completing the escort mission for repairing the Resonance stone, I returned to the Imperial Capital the next day.

I went straight to work at the Imperial Palace.

Although I wanted nothing more than to rest all day, I was employed by the royal exclusive agency.

Even though Julian tended to live as he pleased, he was quite diligent when it came to the work of the ‘Closed Eyes’, so I judged it right to go to work.

And indeed, it was expected.

I passed through the Imperial Palace’s first gate, the Gate of Heaven’s Respect, and headed to the ‘Closed Eyes’ building.

As soon as I arrived at the office, I arranged the potted plants I had brought.

This is much better than before.

The office, previously decorated with Julian’s indescribable aesthetic sense, felt more human after I cleared out all those decorations and brought in orchid plants.

Orchids are truly wonderful.

They don’t require special care and they give a sense of peace to anyone who sees them.

I couldn’t understand such a refined hobby in the past.

But as time went on and I came to my senses, I found myself indulging in this hobby.

Really, no one can predict human affairs.

After looking around the now calm office, I moved towards the window where the sunlight was shining through.

The view of the Imperial Palace, chosen as one of the seven scenic wonders of the Empire for its artistic beauty, was visible, but at the same time, I could see the Resonance stone and the red-colored magical formations installed around the perimeter.

It’s a deadly barrier that turns both demons and intruders into ash.

‘The method to complete the Moonlight Sword.’

I pondered over how to perfect Julian’s trademark ‘Moonlight Sword’ while looking at it.

Although it had shown excellent performance against the demons, it was far from sufficient, as only parts of the blade, not the entire body, were imbued with aura.

‘And that’s why the sword couldn’t withstand it.’

My gaze then shifted to the sheathed sword on the table.

The sword used during the escort mission.

It was in a pitiful state, likely to break after a few uses.

Naturally, I couldn’t use such a sword, so I had brought a new one from the mansion.

‘Although I managed to defeat the demons this time, encountering stronger enemies in the future is inevitable. Therefore, completing the Moonlight Sword is a priority.’

The good thing is, through this real battle, I vaguely figured out the method to do so.

Knock, knock!

As I was pleasantly looking at the potted plant, someone knocked on the door.

When I told them to come in, Razlot, an apprentice of the ‘Closed Eyes’, appeared.

“Ex-excuse me, Julian sir!”

His voice was still filled with fear, and his expression was pale.

His shrinking figure was so pitiable that it made me feel sorry.

It’s as if I had done something wrong.

“As you requested, I have brought the jewels from the Imperial Treasury!”

“Well done.”

I responded with a light smile to Razlot’s words.

Then, with a gesture, I instructed him to place them on the table.

Struggling a bit, he placed the box filled with jewels on the table.

The gems shone subtly, as if asking to recognize their value.

I reached into the case and started to inspect each jewel one by one.

“But, Sir Julian… what do you intend to do with all these jewels?”

Glancing at the curious Razlot, his eyes wandered aimlessly, unable to settle.

If he was that scared, why did he even ask?

“I’m looking for a jewel that matches the wavelength of my mana,” I explained to Razlot.

There was no need to keep it a secret.

“Mana’s wavelength?” he asked.

“Yes. The mana flowing inside each person has different properties. Even as an apprentice, you should know that much, right?”

Razlot nodded his head.

Then, he rummaged through his belongings, took out a notebook and pen, and began to jot down what I was saying.

“That’s why each wizard has their own specialty magic, and knights have different abilities and colors of aura.”

Razlot nodded again, jotting down notes.

It felt like giving a lecture, even though I was merely explaining a setting as if it were from a game.

With an admiring gaze upon me, I picked up a jewel.

It was a ruby, red as flame.

“Every material in this world has the ability to contain mana. Among them, jewels like these have the highest mana conductivity and capacity.”

As I infused mana into the ruby, its color became even more pronounced.

“I see,” he said.

“However, if it has properties opposite to one’s own mana, this happens.”

Crack.

The ruby that had mana infused into it began to crack.

“Ah!”

A sigh leaked from Razlot’s mouth. Shock and a sense of loss were apparent.

“Therefore, wizards call the properties of mana ‘elements’ and categorize them into five colors. This helps to understand the properties of mana more clearly and definitively.”

While explaining, I found a jewel in the box that held a moon-like blue light.

Moonstone.

I picked it up and similarly infused it with mana.

The blue light of the moonstone became more pronounced.

However, it didn’t crack like the ruby.

This must be the jewel whose properties are most similar to Julian’s mana.

“Just as wizards use jewels in their spells, knights can also use jewels. They engrave ‘mana veins’ into their swords to utilize aura more easily.”

“Then, can I… also be able to use aura!?”

“I guess that would be possible.”

At my words, Razlot’s face brightened.

“If you only have that much mana.”

However, it didn’t take long for his expression to darken.

Julian’s body possessed enough mana to be considered a mage.

It was only because of this that such a method could be used,

a method unthinkable to other knights.

The reason the <Moonlight Sword> is currently lacking compared to the original is probably because Julian’s mana isn’t being perfectly transferred to the sword.

If so, creating a ‘Mana Vein’ could allow for much easier transfer than before.

I put the moonstone back into the box.

This was something borrowed from the royal palace.

So it had to be returned.

“Then please return these jewels to the inner treasury.”

“Understood, Sir Julian.”

As I instructed and pondered how to secure more moonstones,

“Sir Julian…”

Razlot remained, looking at me with a troubled expression.

“This ruby has been shattered, what should we do?”

“Ah.”

It was the ruby that had cracked during the initial experiment.

Naturally, returning it to the royal family in this state would cause problems.

And it’s not like I had the ability to repair a shattered jewel.

“Take this instead.”

“Excuse me?”

There was no choice but to hand over a replacement.

I pointed to the crafts tucked away in a corner.

The bizarrely artistic pieces Julian used to decorate his office.

Those were it.

“Will the treasury staff accept these…?”

Razlot seemed unconvinced, but these items were genuinely valuable.

Julian, born with an ego to flaunt, spent most of his salary on luxury goods.

Certainly, some of these items were worth more than the jewels.

But if he still seemed unconvinced, I’d add one more thing.

“Then use my name.”

“Sir Julian’s name?”

“Yes.”

***

Julian Crypart Frason.

I hadn’t fully grasped the significance of this name in the ‘Closed Eyes.’

What made me realize his status was a conversation with the captain, Odwin.

Having to leave momentarily to secure more moonstones,

The response from Odwin when I informed him was something to behold.

– “When have you ever informed and disappeared?”

What kind of life has Julian lived?

And Odwin, speaking so detachedly, what kind of life has he lived?

Anyway, rather than pity, completing the ‘Moonlight Sword’ to survive is the top priority.

I left the headquarters of the ‘Closed Eyes’ and headed towards the imperial capital. But before that, there was a place I needed to visit.

-“Please stop by the imperial secretariat before you leave. I’m not sure why this time, but they said they want to hear the mission report directly.”

It was because the imperial secretariat wanted to hear directly about this mission’s details.

I had a guess as to why.

For a regular member of the ‘Closed Eyes,’ this would be unthinkable, but ‘Julian’ was an exceptional existence even in this royal-exclusive agency.

To put it nicely, a partner; to put it poorly, a useful dog.

So, they wanted to check his condition with their own eyes.

Click-clack, click-clack—

The palace corridors were so well polished that you could see your face reflected on the floor.

“I am Julian of the ‘Closed Eyes.’ I have come to see Sir Sedden Orbian of the secretariat.”

Being in a position equivalent to the royal secretaries, perhaps because they held more power than most nobles, they were assigned a separate building.

Upon mentioning the name of the royal secretary, ‘Sedden Orbian,’ who had summoned me, to the secretarial staff, she smiled and said,

“Sir Sedden is currently away due to a guest. He said it wouldn’t take long and asked that if Sir Julian arrives, to wait a bit in the waiting room.”

“Understood.”

Following the staff’s guidance to the waiting room, the first thing that caught my eye was the interior’s dazzling opulence.

It was a classic elegance, quite different from Julian’s aesthetic sense.

“What’s that?”

Amidst it all, a scabbard placed in a corner caught my eye.

Despite the refined atmosphere, the scabbard’s rugged appearance stood out due to its contrast.

“It seems to belong to a companion of the guest who arrived before you.”

A guest had come before me.

It seems they had a companion.

A sword, though?

I tilted my head, slowly approaching the scabbard that was out of place in the ambiance of the waiting room.

“It feels familiar.”

My first impression was that this sword was all too familiar to me.

Lifting the scabbard, the strange sense of déjà vu only grew stronger.

“Strong in body, strong in spirit.”

Reading the inscription on the edge of the scabbard, I understood the identity of the ‘déjà vu’ that had been troubling me.

“Remove your hand from that sword immediately, you deviant.”

A venomous voice suddenly came from behind me.

It was clear from the hostility overflowing in the voice that it wasn’t the secretarial staff.

Given the situation, I had an idea of who the owner of the scabbard might be.

Without needing to turn around, I knew who the voice belonged to.

Confirming my guess by turning around, my suspicion turned into certainty.

Long, sleek golden hair cascaded down her back, and eyes reminiscent of emeralds.

Despite the displeasure in her eyes, it was impossible to dull her beauty.

“It’s been a while, Linne Londebell.”

Linne Londebell

A daughter of the Londebell family, one of the renowned knightly families of the Adratian Empire, and like Julian, one of the disciples of the Sword Saint Hayden Reich.

Moreover, she is the main character who meets her death at the hands of Julian Crypart Prason in the DLC trailer.
