Master 45

“Aaagh! Let me go! I said, let go!”

“Haha….”

“I’ll curse you…! I’ll curse you for life…!”

The student, who had been caught colluding, screamed in despair as they were dragged out by the selection tournament officials.

I let out a bitter smile at their words before turning my gaze back to the remaining participants in the waiting room, lost in thought.

‘No way… after everything we’ve done, there won’t be any more cheating, right?’

Of course, a rematch in the Talent selection tournament was something that never happened in the original story.

From what I heard, a student used forbidden sorcery during the preliminaries, nearly killing several participants.

The exact details were heavily covered up, making it difficult to grasp what really happened.

However, according to a brief mention in Bergen’s report, one thing was certain—the incident involved black magic.

There wasn’t enough data to draw a firm conclusion, but all the students involved were contenders for the championship.

Something about this smelled fishy.

Should I dig deeper?

And to top it off, the most popular playable characters in the original game were involved.

‘Well, at least they all seem to be here in the waiting room for now….’

Robin, Charlie, and Hayden—three traditionally popular characters from ‘Blacktail Fantasy 3’.

True to their default character settings, their identities were all ordinary, and even their appearances and names were androgynous.

Despite the commotion earlier, they remained still in their places, maintaining their silence.

‘I played as Hayden a lot, but Robin was the most popular.’

Reminiscing about my past life, I gave them a friendly smile, wondering if I should strike up a conversation.

“You’ve been quiet for a while. Are you all right?”

“Excuse me, student?”

But then, something unexpected happened.

Unlike Meredia, who was notoriously cold, Hayden—who used to be my favorite character—didn’t even turn his head in response to my words.

Not only that, but Robin and Charlie, standing next to him, also remained completely motionless.

“You’re wasting your time.”

“Huh?”

Scratching my head in slight embarrassment, I turned to find Cecil watching me disapprovingly.

“They’re just naturally quiet people.”

“…Oh.”

“They’re among the top students in the third year, so I tried talking to them a few times, but I eventually gave up when I realized they never spoke to any of the other students either.”

Now that I think about it, playable characters in the game progressed through the story using dialogue choices rather than speaking themselves.

So, is that aspect reflected in reality as well?

For some reason, I felt like the boundary between the game and reality was blurring.

“By the way, that student from earlier… Are they really connected to black magic?”

As I was mulling over these thoughts, Cecil frowned and pressed me for answers.

“You’re not just falsely accusing someone and plotting something shady again, are you?”

“…Cecil, what do you take me for?”

First, she misunderstood my relationship with Runiel, and now she’s full of unnecessary suspicions about me.

I’m starting to worry about her.

It doesn’t affect me personally, but if she keeps doubting people’s good intentions, it could become a problem.

Then again, she does seem to have a lot of friends, so maybe I don’t need to worry too much.

“And there it is again—that ominous smile. Seriously, cut it out….”

“Uh, um.”

Just as I was looking at Cecil with a slightly pitying smile, lost in thought—

“A-Ah, hello.”

I was suddenly addressed by Adele, who had been fidgeting nervously behind Cecil.

“Oh, Lady Adele. It’s nice to see you again.”

“……!”

“How have you been? No injuries, I hope?”

Although she was Cecil’s rival and now my competition in the selection tournament, I still had a duty as a judge.

So, I responded as kindly as possible.

“T-Thanks to you….”

“Haha, it was nothing. I was just doing my job.”

“…I-I wanted to thank you for what you did back then.”

But somehow, her demeanor felt slightly different from before.

“…What are you doing?”

“I-I just need to borrow your back….”

She was hiding behind Cecil, peeking over her shoulder.

It was a stark contrast to the elegant and prideful noblewoman I had seen before.

It was as if a once arrogant villainess had been humbled after a lesson.

“If only Lady Meredia could become this gentle too….”

I mumbled without thinking, imagining the future I had always hoped for Meredia.

At that, Adele widened her eyes in surprise, looking dazed.

“Um… Excuse me.”

“Yes?”

“D-Do you… prefer gentle women?”

Wait, why is she suddenly asking about my taste in women?

“I mean, I do have a strong personality….”

“……”

“…But I can adjust. S-Specially for you.”

If she keeps saying things like that, I can already guess how Cecil—who’s standing right in front of me—will react.

Sure enough, Cecil’s face was darkening in real-time as she stood there, having unwillingly lent her back to her rival.

‘This is a little sad….’

But knowing that Adele was likely acting on her father’s orders, given how he had even provided her with magical artifacts, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her.

‘How does it feel to pretend to be interested in someone you don’t love?’

Regardless of the circumstances, seeing a daughter being used like a pawn by her father made me feel unexpectedly sympathetic.

And soon, an incident would occur that would push the Mage Tower to the brink of destruction—meaning Adele’s downfall was practically inevitable as well.

“Apologies, but I am already engaged to Lady Meredia.”

“…Oh.”

“So, I cannot afford to let my attention stray to another woman.”

At times like this, it’s important to draw clear boundaries.

As someone who has yet to solidify my position, I couldn’t afford to step in and try to “help” her, only to end up getting caught in the crossfire.

“I… I see. I apologize for overstepping.”

“……”

“I’m always second… I expected this….”

Still, as someone who has lived through two lifetimes, I could at least offer some advice to a lost child.

“I don’t know what your true goal is.”

So I took a step forward and patted her on the shoulder.

“But if you really want something, wouldn’t it be better to obtain it with your own strength, without relying on others?”

“……”

“In my eyes, you have limitless potential.”

For a moment, she just stared at me before her expression darkened slightly.

“What if, no matter how hard I try, I never amount to more than just ‘potential’?”

At her words, I couldn’t help but let out a bitter smile.

“There are people in this world who don’t even get the chance to try.”

“What?”

“Some people are forced to accept their fate and silently comply with it.”

Maybe it was because it reminded me of my past, lying in a hospital bed, waiting to die.

My words, meant as encouragement, ended up carrying a weight of emotion I hadn’t intended.

“Wait… are you talking about yourself?”

“…Haha, no comment.”

Realizing the topic was becoming too heavy for students their age, I quickly tried to change the subject.

But at that exact moment—

“What are you doing?”

“Ah, Lady Meredia.”

Hearing Meredia’s voice from beside me, I froze and instinctively turned my head.

“I was running a little late because of the schedule, but why is nothing progressing?”

“…Ahaha, my apologies.”

Now that I think about it, the faculty members preparing to announce the selection round’s instructions had been subtly throwing me looks.

This unintentionally feels like I caused trouble, making me feel a bit awkward.

“If you’re sorry, then stop this trivial talk and follow me. The schedule ahead is tight.”

“…Understood.”

Feeling like a scolded husband, I shrank back and decided to abandon what I was about to say.

As I turned to follow Lady Meredia, I glanced back slightly and opened my mouth.

“Anyway, I hope you stay strong.”

“……”

“Forget about me and walk your own path.”

It was just words, but this was the best I could do for now.

“I’ll be cheering for your dream from behind.”

It stung a little, but I genuinely hoped she would take my words to heart and find strength in them later.

*****

‘Since when was he capable of such a serious expression?’

Cecil, who had been watching her older brother being dragged away by Meredia with a sulky expression, soon scrunched her face and fell into thought.

‘At least he seems to know how to draw the line.’

She had braced herself, expecting him to say something sly as usual, but surprisingly, he had just given a proper, normal piece of advice.

‘But… what was that part?’

Something in his words nagged at her.

‘It didn’t seem like he was talking about him…’

Cecil, who was particularly perceptive, recalled that when Whitney mentioned those who had no choice but to accept their predetermined fate, his expression had darkened significantly.

However, it didn’t quite match his own situation, and if it were meant for her, it wouldn’t make sense since she was currently standing as a contender in the Talent selection tournament.

“Cecil.”

“…Yes?”

“I hate to admit it, but for the first time, I’m envious of you.”

Cecil, who had been furrowing her brows in thought, momentarily set aside her doubts when Adele’s voice suddenly came from beside her.

“You have an amazing older brother….”

“Ugh?”

Cecil immediately recoiled in shock at Adele’s quiet statement.

“But why did someone like that…”

“…”

“Why did he have to catch her eye?”

But just as quickly, Adele’s voice turned icy as she muttered while staring at Lady Meredia walking away with Whitney.

Cecil had no choice but to shut her mouth.

‘Is she out of her mind?’

As far as Cecil knew, the only person who could match her brother was Lady Meredia.

If Whitney was the shadowy mastermind, then Meredia was the kind of villain who didn’t bother hiding her intentions.

Her most infamous act was nearly bringing down Duke Embergreen and, upon becoming the acting head of the family, publicly purging two-thirds of the household staff in what became known as the “Bloody Succession.”

Compared to that, Whitney—who had swiftly seized power after “sending his father somewhere nice” and merely scared his servants into resigning—seemed like a saint.

“Hey, lower your voice…!”

Cecil, aware that Adele was still a troublemaker, was about to whisper a warning when—

—Swish…

Meredia, who had been walking beside Whitney, suddenly turned her head toward them.

‘I knew this would happen!’

Cecil instinctively held her breath, expecting the worst.

But, as she had anticipated, Meredia didn’t stop to confront Adele.

“…Hah.”

She simply gazed at Adele for a few seconds, gave a cold smile, and turned away.

—Grit…

Cecil, who had been dumbfoundedly watching, felt a strange sense of dissonance when she heard the sound of grinding teeth next to her.

“A good, kind, and wonderful person like him shouldn’t be used by a villain like Lady Meredia… Isn’t that right?”

“…No, they actually seem to get along pretty well.”

“Did you not see his expression just now? That sorrowful smile, lamenting the tragedy of a political marriage…?”

Adele, lost in her own interpretation, momentarily paused before continuing.

‘So that’s why the Lingard family has been issuing large amounts of bonds lately.’

It was common for wealthy noble families to issue bonds when funding large ventures.

But the Lingard family, rumored to be on the verge of bankruptcy, suddenly issuing a massive number of bonds was definitely suspicious.

‘My father tried to buy some, but Duke Embergreen had already acquired most of them….’

And from what she had overheard, the Embergreen family had recently purchased nearly all those bonds.

‘They must have made some sort of deal for the sake of their families.’

Perhaps Whitney had chosen this path for the sake of protecting both his family and his younger sister.

By enrolling in the academy as a noble, Cecil had to pay tuition several times higher than commoners.

And if she placed in the selection tournament, she would only become busier.

Maybe Whitney’s decision was made with that in mind.

‘Judging by her reaction, Cecil probably doesn’t know anything about this.’

As the tragic tale of a noble hero forced to give his body and soul to a woman he didn’t love unfolded in Adele’s mind, she clenched her teeth and made a decision.

“…I’ll take Sir Whitney from her.”

“What?”

“I no longer need my father’s orders. With my own will and power, I will save him…”

Fixing her gaze on Meredia, Adele grabbed Cecil’s hand and spoke with a sweet voice.

“So… will you forgive me for everything until now?”

“……”

“And don’t worry about money. I’ll take care of both you and Sir Whitney. I even run my own trading company.”

At her bombshell statement, Cecil’s mouth fell open in disbelief.

And then—

“And unlike some people, I have no intention of making him my live-in husband. I’m more than willing to handle the household chores myself….”

‘…Has the world gone mad?’

Of course, at that moment, this was merely Cecil’s personal opinion on the bizarre events revolving around Whitney.

But just then—

“…I have a question.”

“…!”

A voice suddenly echoed from the front of the waiting room, where the selection briefing was about to begin.

The question instantly spread a wave of unease among everyone present.

“Can I withdraw from the competition now?”

The shock was immense—not just because of the question itself, but because it came from Hayden, a third-year student so silent that most people had never even heard his voice before.

“I’d like to withdraw as well.”

“Me too.”

And when Robin and Charlie, standing beside him, raised their hands as well, the entire waiting room fell into stunned silence.

“…Huh?”

Even Whitney, who had been too absorbed in his own thoughts to notice the strange atmosphere around him, looked on in complete bewilderment.

He had been too busy wondering which of the three would be chosen by the Saint to see this coming.

Penia Crysinne lived in the flavor of her own importance. Although she acted like a hooligan, displaying her temper as she pleased, this didn’t mean she was stupid or dull.

In a word, she was well self-aware.

Penia had a good grasp of her own situation, so the reformative letter wasn’t much of an issue for her.

The letter was a source of fear only for nobles involved in political life, but there was no reason to fear if one wasn’t entangled in political ideologies.

Unless one were to commit absurdities like human experimentation associated with heretics.

Moreover, the Kingdom of Saints also made an effort not to easily antagonize the people from the Mage Tower.

Fighting each other would benefit neither side much.

Thus, even when Penia heard that Cardinal Yutia had come looking for her because of the reformative letter, she was nonchalant, and had even hoped for a small slip of the tongue when she first heard of the Cardinal’s visit, perhaps to relieve some stress from the workload piled up by Marquis Palatio.

So she looked at Yutia with eyes full of venom, at least until Yutia stepped into the room.

But.

The moment Yutia entered and looked at Penia with a casual expression and a deep smile, Penia couldn’t help but adjust her posture.

In a fleeting moment, she saw something behind Yutia.

She couldn’t see it clearly.

But one thing was clear. It was the same type as ‘that’.

The thing that Marquis Palatio wore on his back.

Something that people must never recognize.

Recognizing it meant one could gain everything in the world, but it would also mean having to sacrifice one’s life—it was a poisoned chalice.

Unknowingly, Penia began to sweat coldly.

‘That’ being there meant, the person before her was not just some Cardinal, but something entirely different.

Thus,

‘What? How? Why is there such a thing behind the Cardinal of the Kingdom of Saints? Why?’

Feeling fear and confusion, Penia said,

“Sorry.”

“What?”

Suddenly apologizing, Yutia had Penia staring blankly,

“As the Vice-tower master of the Blue Tower, I thought it might be difficult to converse without revealing this briefly… I didn’t realize it would scare you this much.”

“Sob-“

She hiccupped.

“You don’t have to react like that. I’m not here to harm the Vice-tower master. Just-“

Despite Penia’s state, Yutia still wore a calm smile.

Then she slowly raised her index finger to her lips and whispered,

“You know, this is a sensitive matter.”

“Yes, of course. I am tight-lipped. Yes, very much so…!”

Penia nodded her head as if mad,

“That’s very good.”

“Yes, yes-“

Unlike when she was grilling Felin, Penia, with a servile smile plastered on her face, cautiously opened her mouth,

“But, may I know the reason for your visit…?”

“Ah, just heard some interesting rumors.”

“Interesting, rumors, you say?”

At Penia’s question, Yutia laughed,

“Yes. Some interesting rumors about our Vice-tower master and Marquis Palatio.”

“Ru, rumors-?”

At that, Penia immediately realized what Yutia was referring to, and simultaneously, her survival instincts, which had started to sound an alarm, miraculously summoned a crumpled memory tucked away in a corner of her brain.

Specifically, the rumor that Marquis Palatio and Cardinal Yutia were closely linked.

Realizing this, Penia closely observed Yutia’s expression.

Surely, she was smiling, but not really.

Her mouth might have been curved into a smile, but her eyes were cold.

Penia frantically struggled for survival,

“That, that’s absolutely not true!”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, yes, absolutely! That’s just a rumor, absolutely! Definitely…!”

“Yet, you hadn’t denied those circulating rumors before-“

“No, no! I’ve denied them all now! Recently! There won’t be any such rumors in the future, really!”

Penia earnestly explained,

Whether her explanation was effective or not, the shadow in Yutia’s serene smile seemed to gradually lift.

Seeing this, Penia, realizing her lifeline was slowly opening, became even more determined and continued her words.

However,

“I, I don’t really have such a taste for the Marquis. Right? He always has that expressionless face, you know? I don’t really like such people.”

“What?”

Maybe, that was too much.

“…What?”

“What did you just say?”

Yutia’s face, which had been smiling pleasantly, suddenly grew cold.

Penia belatedly rolled her eyes and opened her mouth,

“Ah, that, um-“

Penia began sweating profusely,

Why must she suffer so much because of Marquis Palatio?

Suddenly, she felt a surge of sadness, almost bringing tears to her eyes.

But the next moment,

“Vice-tower master.”

“…!?”

Penia couldn’t help but be startled.

Just moments ago, Yutia had been sitting across from her, but now she was unexpectedly beside her, gently placing her hand on Penia’s shoulder.

Penia momentarily froze and wanted to scream, but she managed to keep her mouth shut with hiccups instead.

“It’s good to show your innocence, but that statement was a bit over the line, wasn’t it?”

“Sob-“

“Answer.”

“Yes… yes…! I’m, I’m sorry…!”

“I’ll let it pass this time. But next time… you know?”

Thud-

“I’m a bit short on patience.”

Soon, Yutia whispered in her ear with a chilling voice,

“Alright, Vice-tower master. Let’s get along well from now on.”

“….Yes, understood. Well, Marquis Palatio does have his… his admirable aspects, ha ha.”

Penia replied with an awkward laugh as Yutia stood up,

“But, does that mean you wanted a… a certain kind of relationship with Marquis Palatio?”

Yutia’s face started to harden again, and Penia had to quickly add more to her statement,

“Ah, no, it’s not like that, the Marquis is handsome, but that’s not really my type…”

“So, the Marquis is not your type?”

“No, it’s not that, he definitely is a handsome man!”

“He’s not your type, but you’re interested because he’s handsome?”

“No, that’s not it,”

Penia felt as if she was trapped in an endless cycle, feeling indescribable anger and injustice,

‘This crazy woman, what on earth does she want me to say?!’

But as Penia was very self-aware, and felt painfully that she could not oppose the being in front of her,

“I’m sorry… I’m sorry… I’m sorry for being alive…”

She could only bow her head.

It was a peaceful afternoon.

***

Three days later.

[Ha ha ha- It’s my victory!]

“You crazy-“

[Meow-?]

As Alon was crossing the desert, he observed Evan, Basiliora, and Blackie gambling excitedly from the driver’s seat.

‘What on earth are they playing?’

He soon rummaged through his belongings and pulled out the Scorpion gauntlet he had captured,

Like the artifact he had given to Yutia, it was powerless and glowing a pale white,

‘…Apostle.’

Apostle.

It was the first time Alon had seen an Apostle.

They didn’t even appear in games.

But one thing was certain, they were powerful.

‘If Seolrang had not awakened, it would have been us who suffered.’

Alon felt a deeper need to delve into magic research.

Not just because of the grotesque clean-up, but soon he had to prepare for the Apostles that would start appearing.

Judging coldly, if all Apostles possessed that level of power, it would be virtually impossible for Alon to stop them.

If he couldn’t stop them, the Apostles would eventually create Sin.

Fortunately, Alon had people to help him with his research, and he had already thought of ways to enhance his magical abilities.

The only concern was the ‘information’ about the Apostle.

‘…There’s nothing known about them.’

Unfortunately, no one knew about the Apostle.

Neither asking Rine nor the Dragonkin he had visited during his stay in the Colony yielded any different information.

The most he had learned was that someone who had survived the war might know something.

Thus,

‘…Kylrus’

Alon recalled that name once more.

To the Golden Dragon, he was a mage,

But now, he had appeared as a goblin Outer God.

‘Once I get that item following Eliban, I should go meet him right away.’

Apart from knowing how to use the Dragon of Darkness, there was another reason to meet Kylrus.

As he was organizing his thoughts,

“Marquis.”

Alon turned his head at the sound of Evan’s voice.

“What is it?”

“I realized I hadn’t given this to you.”

Evan pulled a glass bottle from his bosom and handed it over,

“What’s this?”

He asked as he received the bottle filled with black powder,

“From what I hear, it’s the powder of the Apostle’s corpse?”

“What?”

“Was it Seolrang’s secretary…? That person had given it.”

Following the explanation,

“Why would I want this?”

Alon looked bewilderedly at the finely divided (?) powder of the Apostle.

***

In the southernmost part of the continent, in a dense forest touched by the hands of elves instead of humans, lay the sacred land.

Deep within what the elves called Greynifra, lay the elven kingdom of Fildagreen.

The dreamy country of elves built around the World Tree.

And in the massive palace right below the World Tree, in the center of that kingdom,

“You found Raguerine’s blessing?”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

A man, or rather, Perion who had dropped his human disguise, bowed his head and reported to the queen.

“I hadn’t thought it would be possible, but you’ve done something truly great, Perion.”

The elf queen Magrina, her voice mixed with surprise and pride, her bright platinum blonde hair flowing down to her waist, praised him.

Perion bowed even deeper and continued,

“Thank you, Your Majesty. However, there’s something I must tell you.”

“What is it?”

“Raguerine’s blessing, it wasn’t me who found it.”

“It wasn’t you, Perion?”

“Yes. It’s that—”

Carefully nodding, Perion began to recount the events that had occurred in Lartania, and as Magrina listened to Perion’s words for a while,

“So, this Marquis Palatio not only instantly recognized your identity but also informed you of the location of Raguerine’s blessing… is that what you’re saying?”

“Yes.”

“The room with Raguerine’s blessing was made like Fagade’s hideout—”

“No one else had entered there besides me. And as I mentioned, there was a message written inside.”

“‘I hope it reaches my sibling well,’ wasn’t it?”

“Yes.”

Magrina looked at the blessing brought by Perion with a disbelieving expression and fell silent for a moment.

Her voice began to tremble slightly,

“So, Perion, are you suggesting that this Marquis Palatio might be the ancient elf—my older brother?”

“I can’t be certain, of course. But considering he easily discerned that I was part of Fagade and led me to Raguerine’s blessing, it must have been him.”

Magrina lost her words again.

Because Perion’s reasoning made sense.

However, she couldn’t judge the Marquis based solely on this fact.

Originally, as Magrina knew, the ancient elf and her brother had died hundreds of years ago.

She knew well that the dead do not return.

Amid the continuing silence,

“I will quietly check and come back.”

Turning towards the voice, there stood an elf wrapped in a mage’s robe—Philde, Magrina’s personal mage.

“Is it possible to confirm that?”

“There isn’t a lack of methods. As you know, my eyes are a bit special.”

“Ah.”

Magrina inadvertently let out a gasp.

Philde possessed the Spirit Eyes, capable of seeing souls.

If so, confirming the identity of Marquis Palatio would be an easy task.

“Then, please proceed.”

“I understand. I will go with Perion.”

As soon as their task was decided, Philde and Perion promptly bid farewell and left.

Watching the backs of the two elves,

“If my brother really is alive…”

She clenched her fist.

She knew it was logically absurd.

Yet, in her eyes, there flickered an unmistakable light of subtle hope.

Round 290

Prev | TOC | Next

Global pharmaceutical company Mohaim.

One day, chaos broke out within Mohaim, from its lowest-level employees to its executives.

“Is this even possible?”

“Find out if it’s true, immediately!”

“This might be achievable, but how could even this…?”

The reason for their astonishment was none other than a patented dementia treatment from Ara Hongryeon.

The sudden emergence of this treatment had begun making waves across global pharmaceutical companies.

As a result, Mohaim hadn’t turned off its lights for 48 hours since the news broke.

The entire company was in turmoil, with employees pulling all-nighters and running around in a frenzy.

The discovery of the dementia cure was nothing short of astonishing.

Particularly for Mohaim, there was a legendary trio of treatments often considered mythical: a cure for dementia, a cure for baldness, and a miracle diet pill.

Though these products existed, they were more myth than reality—plagued by severe side effects and minimal efficacy.

But now, the news of a genuine dementia cure had taken the industry by storm.

“I figured this day might come someday, but…”

Since the appearance of dungeons in the world, phenomena and substances defying scientific explanation had begun to surface.

Paradoxically, whenever science managed to explain them, humanity made significant leaps forward.

This dementia cure was one such example.

Many believed that someday, something originating from a dungeon would help humanity conquer previously unsolvable problems.

However, Mohaim firmly believed that they should have been the ones to lead such breakthroughs.

“Ara Hongryeon! Of course, it’s them again!”

The South Korean guild Ara Hongryeon had become a household name.

Their consumable items had already captivated the attention of pharmaceutical companies, including Mohaim, which had tried various means to steal and reverse-engineer them.

Despite their efforts to replicate these items by analyzing the ingredients, the results had been futile.

Now, the appearance of a dementia cure was an even greater shock.

“What happened to the employees we sent? What about the mercenaries?”

“The South Korean government has fortified its security. Most foreigners entering Korea are currently under suspicion of being industrial spies.”

“Anticipating this, we also sent mercenaries with Korean citizenship!”

“Approaching Ara Hongryeon itself seems to be nearly impossible. They appear to have thoroughly prepared before filing for the patent…”

Despite their frustration, there was little Mohaim could do.

Just as tempers were flaring, another message arrived—this time from their Chinese collaborators.

Though headquartered in the UK, Mohaim was also a joint venture with Chinese pharmaceutical companies, making it natural for the two sides to discuss this development together.

– Have you made any progress in Korea?

“No progress,” the Mohaim executive admitted.

There was, quite literally, nothing they could do.

A Chinese contact then hesitantly suggested,

– One of China’s guilds, the Skyscraper Guild, has a cooperative relationship with Ara Hongryeon.

“The Skyscraper Guild? Could they assist us?”

– Fortunately, we have someone in our support network who is an executive in the Skyscraper Guild. They’re in contact now. Please wait a little longer.

This news came as a relief.

The Skyscraper Guild was a well-known giant, even to the Mohaim executive.

Since resolving the infamous dungeon break in Insaek, the guild had gained immense clout in China, ranking among the top five guilds in the nation.

“That’s excellent news! Let’s hope for a successful connection!”

– We’ll update you soon.

The executive hung up, feeling hopeful that this Chinese connection might be their last chance.

As time passed, with report after report bringing only bad news, the awaited follow-up from China finally arrived.

“What’s the update?” the Mohaim executive asked urgently.

The Chinese contact hesitated before speaking slowly.

– We’re sorry.

“Does that mean we’ve failed?”

– It’s beyond failure…

“What do you mean?”

– The Skyscraper Guild has issued a warning. They explicitly stated that any further attempts to approach Ara Hongryeon or the awakened individual Lee Kyu-seong will not be tolerated.

“What?!”

It was reported that the Skyscraper Guild had issued a warning.

For them, a warning was never just empty words.

In the current world, it was no exaggeration to say that awakened individuals were at the center of everything.

And the organizations where these awakened individuals gathered were the guilds.

Among those guilds, the Skyscraper Guild was one of immense power and influence.

“Gulp.”

A warning from such a guild was not something to be taken lightly.

Even for Mohaim, a global pharmaceutical company, it implied potential direct consequences for the company itself.

– I-I’m sorry. We didn’t expect the Skyscraper Guild to respond so forcefully.

“Ah… uh…”

The Mohaim executive was at a loss for words.

He knew it was meaningless to blame the Chinese contact.

Finally, he stood up and spoke.

“I’ll go and apologize in person. Could you help me set up another meeting?”

– I’ll ask, but there’s a chance the Skyscraper Guild might refuse.

“Please, I’d appreciate it.”

The call ended there.

The Mohaim executive now dreaded reporting this matter to his superiors.

As an executive, his “superiors” ultimately referred to the chairman.

“Sigh…”

They had truly messed up this time.

After hosting some visitors, life had returned to normal.

While not much had changed, one thing was different—Kyler’s house was under construction.

“Who would’ve thought the first house built in our dungeon would be Kyler’s?”

“This feels oddly embarrassing yet humbling,” Kyler said, scratching his head, his expression now far softer than before.

When we first met, he seemed like a secret agent.

Now, he just looked like your typical dad, utterly smitten with his daughter.

The house was being built outside the Slime Village, a bit of a distance away.

The plot of land was chosen by a stream, and the water and sewage systems were meticulously planned.

Kyler had co-designed the house with my father, and the quality of their plans was surprisingly high.

All the materials came from the dungeon, and goblins, gnolls, and even slimes were busy constructing it.

Of course, Kyler insisted on building his own house, hammer and saw in hand, bustling around with enthusiasm.

‘It should be done in a few days.’

Meanwhile, Jae-seong’s restaurant construction was also progressing.

The foremen and workers—friends of my father—were diligently building on the plot in front of the dungeon.

Thanks to their efforts, Jae-seong was spending all day supervising the site.

“By the way, aren’t you planning to build a house, Kyu-seong?”

“Ah, I wanted to at first, but I kept putting it off. Eventually, I just accepted that the entire dungeon feels like my home anyway.”

“True, the dungeon is essentially your house.”

“But seeing Kyler build his home has made me want one, too. I’ll have to give it a shot someday.”

“When the time comes, I’ll gladly help you.”

After exchanging some warm words, I greeted Kyler and returned to the village.

Having wrapped up most of my tasks for the day, I finally had some leisure time.

Checking the minimap, I saw that the kids were playing in the fairy village.

‘I should continue working on the hero training.’

Lately, my greatest joy had been completing quests with Emily.

The system kept warning me to be cautious of heroes, but why should I?

I hadn’t done anything wrong.

And Emily, who seemed destined to become a hero, was practically family—a niece, of sorts.

Helping her grow gave me immense satisfaction.

‘I’m going to create the strongest awakened being ever!’

That’s what I told myself, but in reality, Emily spent most of her time running around the dungeon with the kids.

‘Come to think of it, Emily did mention she loved K-pop and dramas.’

She had self-taught herself Korean through her love of Hallyu culture and was now practically fluent.

Given her interests, I wanted to show her more of Korea.

“Hm…”

I thought about checking for any updates from the outside world and decided it was time to contact Iron Blood after a long while.

I wondered how Director Kim Tae-yang was doing.

We hadn’t been in touch lately.

As I stepped out of the Dungeon of Gluttony, I noticed a construction site bustling with activity.

The workers, the foreman, my father, and Jae-seong were all there—oh, Orie was there too.

‘Those two seem like… they’re going to get married.’

Kids these days are so fast, I thought, laughing to myself.

As I greeted everyone, they welcomed me warmly.

Before long, Jae-seong noticed me and came running over energetically.

Despite being built like a bear, his actions were as childlike as ever.

“Brother! Look at this! What do you think of this structure?”

“It looks great. Who came up with this idea?”

“The foreman suggested it. Isn’t the design cool?”

The restaurant had a modern design that stood out.

They were even reshaping parts of the dungeon terrain to build it, and their passion was infectious.

It looked like it would become an amazing restaurant.

“What brings you out here?” my father asked, approaching quietly.

“I just came to check if I had any messages.”

“Alright, go ahead.”

After saying goodbye to everyone, I headed outside.

As usual, I had several messages waiting.

Since the delivery date was approaching, most of them were about that.

“Let’s see…”

Director Kim Tae-yang seemed like the most approachable.

Though I was closer to CEO Baek, he was the head of Iron Blood, so contacting him for something trivial felt inappropriate.

‘Then again, the director is in a similar position, isn’t he?’

After all, he was a Level 8 awakened individual in Korea.

But to me, he just felt like an employee of Iron Blood Entertainment.

“Hmm.”

Maybe I should just contact Actress Seo Ye-eun?

I even had her manager’s number.

“Ah, whatever.”

After some deliberation, I ended up messaging Kim Tae-yang, who was practically in charge of the company.

The message was simple: Could we visit for a tour?

After sending it, I decided to take a short walk and enjoy the fresh air.

Before long, my phone rang.

Beep-beep.

“Yes, Director!”

– Long time no see. You haven’t contacted me in ages.

“Haha, sorry about that. But I’ve sent you occasional messages and even some snacks…”

– Hearing your voice and seeing your face is what matters. I felt a bit neglected.

His playful tone was all too familiar.

It was obvious he was teasing me.

– So, why the sudden request? A tour, you say?

“Ah, I’ve got a kid who’s like a niece living with me now. She’s really into Hallyu culture. She’s from the U.S., by the way.”

– Ah, I see. In that case, I’ll arrange something for tomorrow.

“What? Really? Is that okay?”

– Of course. I’ll send a vehicle to your place tomorrow morning. You can use it to come here. I’ll also prepare the itinerary. Expect a packed schedule.

“Wait, what? Isn’t this supposed to be just a tour?”

– It is a tour. So don’t be late. I’ll send the car at 8 a.m.

Click.

The call ended abruptly.

I was a bit taken aback, but when I thought about how excited Emily and the kids would be, I couldn’t help but smile.

How thrilled they would be.

Iron Blood wasn’t a small company, so there was even a chance Emily might meet celebrities she knew.

“I need to go tell her right away.”

“Thank you for the meal.”

“You reserved the entire inn, so this level of hospitality is the least I can do. Hehe.”

The inn, which had been noisy for a while, quieted down as lunchtime approached.

“…Phew.”

The innkeeper, who had been delivering meals to each room where the holy knights were staying, let out a small sigh and wiped the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve.

“This should be the next room, I think…”

Of course, he was exhausted from delivering such a large quantity of food.

However, the sweat running down his face wasn’t just from the labor—it was a cold sweat caused by tension.

“…Damn it, that old man just won’t die, will he?”

After cutting ties with the back alleys and setting up an inn near the capital, he had truly believed he was starting a second chapter in life.

“I even changed my hair color and face completely—how did they find me…?”

That belief lasted until just yesterday when subordinates of the former underworld boss secretly visited his inn and assigned him a covert mission.

‘Should I report this…?’

For a brief moment, the thought crossed his mind.

However, shaking his head immediately, he pulled out a precious photograph he always carried with him.

‘No, if I do that…’

Unlike in the past, when he had nothing to lose and could afford to act recklessly, he now had a family to support.

If he betrayed them now, it was obvious what would happen to the smiling faces in the photograph.

– Clench…

Gripping the photo tightly at the thought, the man soon set his resolve.

‘Fine, let’s do this.’

Thinking about it, of course, it was risky, but this could also be an opportunity.

All he had to do was slip something into the food and successfully knock out a single knight.

In return, he and his family would receive enough wealth to live comfortably for the next three years.

He wasn’t hurting or destroying anyone—just a simple trick.

Compared to the dangerous jobs he had done in the past, this seemed like an enticing offer.

“Ahem, ahem. Is anyone there?”

After finishing his rationalization, the man stood before his target’s door, cleared his throat, and did his best to sound natural.

“I’ve brought your meal.”

“……”

“Excuse me?”

But strangely, no response came from inside the room.

“Ah… Is no one there?”

Slightly taken aback by the unexpected situation, the man cautiously knocked on the door and asked again.

However, there wasn’t even a sound of footsteps beyond the firmly shut door.

“Excuse me, but I’m coming in for a moment.”

“……”

“I-It would be a shame if the food got cold. Hehe…”

Growing increasingly anxious, he finally reached into his pocket for the spare key he had brought just in case.

– Creak…

Just as his fingers grasped the key inside his pocket, the tightly shut door suddenly creaked open without warning.

“Whew. If you were inside, you should’ve said something…”

Letting out a sigh of relief, he mumbled in a grumbling tone as he looked up—only to suddenly trail off.

“Haha, well, this is awkward.”

“…Who are you?”

Peeking out from the slightly open door wasn’t a holy knight in uniform, but a suspicious-looking young man.

“Did I… come to the wrong room?”

“No, you’re in the right place. So, just hand me the food…”

“But… there shouldn’t be anyone here besides the knights from the Holy Kingdom today…”

Blinking in confusion, the man ignored the outstretched hand of the young man and nervously peered inside.

“…Ah.”

And at that moment, he realized his mistake.

“Mmph! Mmmph!”

“Stay still.”

Inside the room, the knight who was supposed to be here was tied up tightly, stripped down to her underclothes, struggling like a chicken being prepared for market.

“I really didn’t expect things to go wrong from the start…”

“No, no! This is a great chance to practice covering up evidence!”

“…”

His brain completely froze as his eyes landed on three figures in the room.

Bergen, who was glancing toward the window.

Parsha, who was oddly excited.

And Hestia, who was struggling to put on what was unmistakably the knight’s armor.

“Uh…”

“Hah.”

“Can we close the door now?”

The man, who had stood frozen for a long moment, finally snapped back to reality at Whitney’s low voice from the front.

“Y-Yes, of course…”

Fortunately, having grown up in the back alleys, he was quick-witted.

“I-I’ll have the carriage ready outside the inn. And of course, I’ll never speak a word about what I saw…”

“You may not understand now, but when you read the newspaper later, you’ll know the full story. You won’t face any trouble.”

He didn’t bother asking how he was supposed to make sense of a scene where people stripped a holy knight of her uniform, tied her up, and held a knife to her throat.

Because through the slight gap in the door, he could feel the cold, piercing stares of Whitney and the others directed straight at him.

“Mmmph… Mmph…”

“Ah, understood. Hehe.”

The man desperately ignored the knight’s pleading and despair-filled gaze, pretending not to see it.

Forcing a smile, he slowly started to step backward.

“Ah, wait a moment.”

“Hik! Y-Yes?”

Just then, Whitney suddenly grabbed his arm.

The man barely stopped himself from screaming, swallowing his groan with sheer willpower, and asked in a timid voice.

“Leave that behind.”

“Ah, y-yes…!”

“Then, excuse me.”

Fortunately, Whitney, who had been staring at him, only took the food basket from his trembling hands before retreating inside.

“…Haa, haa…”

The moment the door closed, the man staggered backward, leaning against the wall and gasping for breath.

— Now then, Knight, open your mouth for a moment, will you?

— T-The Goddess will never forgive you…! Mmph—!

— There, there, just take a nice, long nap. Haha.

As eerie voices began leaking from the room, the man covered his mouth with both hands, his face filled with terror.

— Saintess… Why are you with such vile people…?

— I-I’m sorry…!

— Ah… Aah….

And then, silence.

With the knight’s faint, dying cry, all conversation ceased, and a chilling stillness filled the air.

“Hiiik…!”

Paralyzed with fear, the man stumbled to his feet and fled down the hallway.

But as his legs gave out, he collapsed in front of the stairs, his face completely blank as he mumbled to himself.

‘…What the hell have I gotten myself into?’

He would never be able to understand, but Whitney’s grand plan for the Saintess’s awakening—purely for world peace and the greater good—was only just beginning.

***

Several hours later, after all the classes had ended for the day at the academy.

“Phew…”

“Cecil, you got this!”

“Stay strong!”

With her friends cheering her on, Cecil arrived at the waiting room where the participants for the Talent Selection Tournament were gathering.

“What do I do? I’m so nervous….”

Her grades and skills were on par with the other competitors, so her participation was more than justified.

Still, the fact that a first-year had even been given the opportunity to compete was rare, so even though she had been mentally preparing for this for a while, she couldn’t help but feel anxious.

“…Calm down, I can’t be like this already.”

Slapping both her cheeks lightly, she steadied herself.

With newfound determination, she reached out to grasp the door handle.

“Guys, I’ll be going in now—”

Just as she turned slightly to say a quick goodbye to her friends who had come with her…

“?”

“..?”

She noticed that their gazes weren’t on her, but on something far down the hallway.

“…Oh, for fuck’s sake.”

Following their line of sight, Cecil furrowed her brows in irritation.

“Ahem, ahem!”

“Oh my, now who could that be over there?”

Leading a group of noble followers, Adele was striding toward her.

“Hmm, I can’t quite see with all these commoners in the way.”

“You’d think a noble would know better than to lower herself by mingling with commoners. Doesn’t she realize how it affects her status? Fufu…”

“Here we go again.”

Having grown utterly exhausted from these childish antics since the entrance ceremony, Cecil sighed coldly and tried to slip into the waiting room before things got worse.

“Ahem. Everyone, let’s not be so reckless with our words.”

“?”

“..?”

“A rude comment like that only damages our own dignity.”

Hearing Adele’s unexpected rebuke from afar, Cecil stopped in her tracks and turned back, eyes wide in surprise.

“Excuse me, commoners—no, students. My apologies.”

“…What?”

“I sincerely apologize on their behalf. Please don’t take it to heart.”

Up until a few days ago, Adele had been the epitome of arrogance and entitlement.

But now, before Cecil’s very eyes, she was grabbing the hem of her skirt and bowing in apology.

“Adele…?”

“Why are you acting like this…?”

Even her followers, who had been trying to stay in her good graces, were flustered.

But Adele ignored them and took a step closer to Cecil.

“Cecil, I… was a little harsh before, wasn’t I?”

“W-What’s this all of a sudden?”

“Wouldn’t it be nice if the top two students got along?”

Before Cecil could react, Adele reached out and grabbed her hand.

Silence fell over the waiting room entrance.

“W-Well, I don’t mind, but…”

“Oh my, I’m so happy. Fufu.”

“…Okay, but seriously, why are you acting like this?”

“Actually, I do have one little question.”

Still smiling and waving her hand, Adele suddenly lowered her voice and hesitated, as if checking Cecil’s reaction.

“…Are you close with your brother?”

“…Huh?”

“Oh, it’s nothing big. Just a tiny thing…”

The moment Cecil narrowed her eyes in suspicion, Adele fidgeted nervously, pressing her index fingers together.

“M-Maybe you could tell me what he likes or what his hobbies are…?”

“…Why?”

“F-For a gift! That’s all! No other reason! I just really wanted to thank him for saving me the other day….”

In that instant, a long-dormant instinct as a younger sister screamed a warning inside Cecil’s mind.

‘No way. This can’t be happening…’

Of course, it wasn’t as if she had suddenly rekindled some deep sibling bond with her brother.

It was just the primal horror any sister would feel when someone showed an interest in their useless, lazy older brother.

‘She’s interested? In him? Of all people?!’

It was the same gut reaction a younger sister would have upon realizing that someone wanted to be introduced to their good-for-nothing sibling who spent most of their time lying in bed, scratching their stomach.

“I-I’m sorry, but I’m not really close with that… I mean, my brother.”

“O-Oh, I see.”

“We haven’t really talked much since we were kids, so…”

Suppressing the shudder creeping up her spine, Cecil tried to end the conversation by outright denying their sibling relationship.

“…That’s a little disappointing, but oh well. He’s probably inside anyway.”

“…What?”

“Actually, could you help me out when I go talk to him?”

With a slight blush on her cheeks, Adele turned her gaze toward the waiting room door, absentmindedly twirling her hair with her fingers.

“…From what I heard, he was pretty badly injured during the exam and even stepped down as a judge.”

“Oh.”

“And for that reason, wouldn’t it be rude to go inside…?”

“Y-You’re right. My apologies.”

Only after Cecil spoke in an icy voice, her patience completely worn thin, did Adele finally mumble dejectedly, her eyes losing their spark.

‘I feel a little bad, but this works out for me.’

Rubbing the goosebumps on her arms, Cecil glanced at her before regaining her composure and grabbing the door handle of the waiting room.

‘Whatever he’s scheming, this must’ve thrown a wrench in it.’

“…Uh, um.”

‘At the very least, he won’t be able to interfere with the selection—’

“Let’s go together!”

Just as Cecil was about to push the door open, Adele suddenly raised her voice urgently, causing Cecil to look at her in confusion.

“I-I’m also an alternate candidate for the selection match!”

“…What?”

“Look! I received this letter from the board this morning!”

Adele quickly held out a letter, and Cecil’s eyes widened when she saw the exact same candidate seal that she herself had received days ago.

“But… there was only one open spot, wasn’t there?”

“…Right. Maybe someone withdrew, opening up another spot?”

“But the selection match is such a prestigious opportunity. Who would willingly withdraw?”

As they exchanged puzzled glances, Cecil decided to set aside her doubts for now and stepped through the half-open door.

“Well, we can just go inside and check the situation.”

She was far too eager to step into the room to waste time on trivial questions.

***

“But why is it so noisy in here—”

With a slight thrill in her heart, Cecil stepped into the slightly bustling waiting room, finally experiencing the dream of being a participant in the selection match.

However, the excitement lasted only a moment.

“W-What the…?”

Her eyes widened in disbelief, and before she realized it, she took an instinctive step backward.

“Cough… Cough…”

For some reason, a third-year student was slumped on the floor, clutching his chest and gasping as if he was on the verge of collapsing.

“W-What’s going on…?”

Cecil was about to rush forward but hesitated mid-step.

Standing in front of the struggling student was Whitney, who was supposed to still be lying in the infirmary, wearing a cold, emotionless expression.

“P-Please… reconsider….”

“I-I want to participate in the selection match… Please don’t crush my hopes… Ugh.”

The desperate student knelt at Whitney’s feet, trying to plead, but before he could finish, Whitney mercilessly stomped on his outstretched hand.

His voice was as frigid as ice.

“You, who can’t even land a single hit on me, think you deserve to compete in the selection match?”

“…Ugh.”

“Wouldn’t it be better to give the opportunity to someone more deserving?”

Grinding his teeth, the student glared up at Whitney but eventually lowered his head in silent defeat.

“Everyone here, keep quiet about what happened. Don’t stir up unnecessary trouble, and let’s handle this withdrawal quietly.”

“……”

“For the smooth progress of the selection match… and of course, for our lovely new addition, Lady Adele. I’d appreciate your cooperation. Haha…”

With that, a suffocating silence fell over the waiting room.

No one even dared to breathe too loudly, their faces pale as they all nodded in reluctant agreement.

“Good, then—oh.”

Finally satisfied, Whitney turned his head—only to suddenly freeze when he spotted Cecil standing blankly at the entrance.

“…Cecil.”

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Whitney, awkwardly lifting his foot from the student’s hand, finally broke the silence.

“This time, I swear, it’s really a misunderstanding.”

But Cecil’s face had already darkened ominously.

“So that’s why Adele was acting weird all of a sudden…”

“N-No, I’m serious, it’s a misunderstanding.”

“…This is the worst. Go die.”

Having disqualified a student for conspiring with black mages, only to barely escape retaliation, Whitney felt more wronged than ever.

Round 289

Prev | TOC | Next

The sound of giggling caught my attention.

Curious, I approached to find Seon-ah surrounded by fairies perched all over her, engaging in animated conversation.

Ever since she developed the ability to communicate with them, she had become a frequent visitor to the fairy village.

“Kyu-seong, you’re here!”

“Yes, I am.”

Jung So-hyeon and Ara waved enthusiastically.

Si-young was nowhere in sight, but she soon appeared with Frey, emerging from the World Tree.

Gomgom was with them too, wobbling under the weight of a pile of freshly harvested World Tree mushrooms.

Si-young, empty-handed, must have insisted that Gomgom carry everything despite his struggles.

“Hello, Grand Lord!”

“Kyu-seong, look at this one.”

Si-young gestured at Gomgom with a laugh.

Despite her amusement, Gomgom seemed utterly proud, showing no intention of sharing the mushrooms he had claimed as his trophy.

“Gomgom, can you manage all that on your own?”

“Kuwaang!”

Gomgom waddled off somewhere, with Ara chasing after him.

He eventually stopped where Purr was lying in the grass.

“Oh, Purr’s here too?”

Gomgom began transferring the mushrooms to Purr, with Ara assisting him as if it were second nature.

“Gomgom must have harvested a lot.”

“Yeah, looks like we won’t be running out of World Tree mushrooms anytime soon.”

The mushrooms were a delicacy, so much so that they were now included in almost every dish.

Lately, thanks to Jae-seong, we’d been drying and using them in powdered form as well.

Once all the mushrooms were loaded, Purr began heading toward the village on its own.

“It feels a bit strange, doesn’t it?”

I couldn’t help but marvel at the seamless teamwork between Gomgom and Purr, despite not having instructed them.

They must have been harvesting and transporting mushrooms like this without my involvement all along.

Watching the mushrooms safely on their way to the village, I turned to the guests.

“I was thinking we could all visit Sky Island later. What do you think?”

“I’ve been looking forward to it! Seeing the sky that close must be incredible,” said Jung So-hyeon.

“I can’t wait to go either,” added Si-young, her face brimming with excitement.

“You’re going to love it! There are slimes there with eyes and mouths too!”

Seeing Seon-ah’s excitement made me smile.

Once upon a time, these people had seemed so distant and awe-inspiring.

Now, we were close friends enjoying each other’s company.

After playing with the fairies for a while, everyone rose to leave.

A few fairies clung to our shoulders and heads, eager to come along.

“Grand Lord, Grand Lord! I want to see the floating lights!”

“The floating lights? Sure, let’s go see them together.”

The lights, a strange plant species we’d named Glowbulbs, grew naturally in the caves of Sky Island.

Though I hadn’t cultivated them myself, I’d once shown them to the fairies after harvesting.

Since then, they had only heard stories about the glowing orbs and were eager to see them again.

“Wait, but Gomgom is here. Where’s Soo?”

“Soo? Oh!”

Seon-ah suddenly looked startled and glanced around.

Soo was nowhere to be seen.

“Why not check the minimap?”

Pulling up the minimap, I expected to find Soo in the village.

But his icon wasn’t in the slime village.

Scanning the map further, I spotted Soo’s icon, strangely isolated in an unexplored, fog-covered area.

“What? Why is Soo there?”

“Where? Where is he?”

It was a place I had never been before, completely shrouded in mist on the minimap.

Slightly alarmed, I asked Seon-ah and the others to wait in the village for a while.

“Purr!”

Upon arriving at the village, Purr had already handed over the mushrooms to the rabbits.

I immediately climbed onto Purr’s back, ready to head toward Soo’s location.

“I’m coming with you!”

“Alright. Let’s go together, Ara.”

With Ara seated in front of me, we set off.

Purr sped up, cutting through the wind as we ventured in an unfamiliar direction.

Soo’s location was quite far, making me wonder how he had managed to get there.

Imagining his small body tirelessly walking such a distance felt a bit odd.

Why had he gone to such a place alone?

If his icon hadn’t appeared on the minimap, I might have been truly alarmed.

It took about ten minutes on Purr.

Considering Purr’s speed, this was an exceptionally long journey.

For Soo, who was much slower, it must have been an enormous distance.

“Soo!”

As soon as we reached the location indicated by the icon, I called out to him.

The icon showed he was nearby, but he wasn’t immediately visible.

The area we arrived at was a sprawling flower field.

Had it not been for Soo’s disappearance, I might have been captivated by its beauty.

“Soo! Where are you?”

Ara’s eyes sparkled as she used her abilities to search for him.

Suddenly, she jumped excitedly, as though she had found something.

“I found him!”

“Where?”

Ara dashed off somewhere, and I quickly followed her.

What we saw next was something completely unexpected.

“Soooo?”

Soo looked at us with a surprised expression.

Surrounding him were tiny versions of himself, all gathered together and staring at us curiously.

“What… What is this…?”

There were five—no, six—tiny Soos.

Each was about the size of my palm, similar to the fairies in scale.

Still in shock, I could only stare blankly until Ara exclaimed with bright eyes.

“Did he have babies?”

“Soo… had babies? What are you talking about?”

I… I didn’t want to know!

The idea of Soo having babies was too bizarre to process.

“Sooo!”

But Soo shook his head firmly, as if to say that wasn’t the case.

“Then… what are these little ones?”

“Sooo!”

Soo tried to explain with animated gestures in response to Ara’s question.

“Five Elemental Cycle? Is that what this is?”

“Sooo~!”

Though I didn’t fully understand, it seemed that this phenomenon had something to do with Soo’s abilities.

“So, you’re saying these aren’t your children?”

“Sooo!!”

Soo gave me a look that clearly said, ‘Are you seriously still asking that?’

But the tiny ones looked so much like him!

The small creatures stared at us silently, their expressions vacant, like puppies just opening their eyes and beginning to crawl.

Confused and unsure of what to do, I cautiously approached Soo.

“Can I touch one?”

“Sooo.”

Soo gestured that it was fine.

I gently picked up one of the tiny creatures.

“Soooo!”

This little one made the same sounds as Soo.

No matter how I looked at them, they seemed like Soo’s offspring.

‘Are they really Soo’s children?’

Ultimately, it was true that Soo had created them.

All the tiny ones had the appearance of thick roots, each with a small, unique sprout on its head.

“There doesn’t seem to be a status window for them.”

It seemed these creatures were treated as regular monsters, not my familiars.

In that case, a bit of carrot juice would do.

However, in my haste, I had left Bokkeum behind.

“Soooo.”

“They have to grow here?”

“Soooo.”

It appeared this place was their home.

I hadn’t taken great care of Soo lately, but to think he’d been growing a family here was unexpected.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Soooo.”

What was he saying?

Ara quickly translated for me.

“He dreamed of an herbal army. Now, it’s just a mere dream.”

“An herbal army?”

What on earth was that?

What were you plotting, Soo?

I was stunned by this unexpected confession.

Soo then made an effort to explain further, squeaking indignantly.

“Sooo, Sooo, Soooo!!”

“He plans to continue cultivating the herbal army! He wants to turn this place into a village of herbs and eventually cover the entire world in herbs!!”

“Wow.”

Clap, clap, clap.

I applauded Soo’s passionate explanation.

To think he’d been harboring such audacious ideas—it was too adorable to resist hugging him.

“Soo, then how are these little ones created?”

“Soooo!”

Soo, like a tiny mage, waved his body cutely, seemingly using telekinesis.

Suddenly, a nearby flower began to grow rapidly.

Rustle!

It shook off the dirt and emerged!

“!”

“Wow!”

In an instant, another tiny creature was born.

The newly created “choco-mi” had a flower on its head and initially stared blankly before cautiously exploring its surroundings.

“Sooo?”

It slowly got up and waddled around.

“Wow, so the Five Element Cycle can do this too?”

I’d once relied on the Five Element Cycle ability to create an elixir for Frey’s awakening.

But I hadn’t imagined it could be used like this.

“Soooo!”

“I will definitely create an herbal army!”

Soo’s dream remained unwavering.

Thinking about how he must have been traveling here every day to create the choco-mis made me admire his dedication.

“Soo, from now on, when you come here, ask Purr or Mungmungie for help.”

“Soooo, Soooo!!!”

“Really? I can do that?”

“Of course.”

Considering how slow Soo was, it must have taken him hours to get here, nearly a full day for a round trip.

Still, knowing there wasn’t any real problem was a relief.

It just made me laugh to think he had been secretly creating these adorable creatures.

“Soo, I’ll leave Purr here, so bring him along next time, okay?”

“Soooo!”

Soo nodded enthusiastically, clearly pleased.

After spending some time playing with the choco-mis Soo had created, I remembered the others who were waiting and hurried back.

“This is terrifying,” Ara muttered.

“Huh? What is?”

“Soo creating an herbal army! I won’t lose to him!”

Ara, showing a peculiar sense of rivalry, made me laugh as I patted her head.

***

The Sky Island tour was a success.

We all admired the dungeon scenery from above, touched the clouds that felt within reach, and explored the ancient slime village.

“I wish we could spend the night here!”

Si-young, in particular, seemed to fall in love with Sky Island, as it suited her free-spirited nature.

Since it wasn’t time to sleep yet, we all gathered around to enjoy the lively cooking of Jae-seong, Orie, and Ashu.

“Hahaha! The liquor tastes great!”

“Just for today! Only a little for today!”

Hanul, Young-seong, and Father enjoyed some light drinks, while the rest of us savored freshly made dishes as we placed our orders.

‘It feels even more fun with so many people around.’

I hoped Jae-seong’s restaurant could capture a similar atmosphere—where everyone could laugh and chat, or quietly enjoy themselves, all finding happiness in their own way.

After finishing our hearty meal, we headed to the hot springs for a relaxing soak before bed.

“This is heaven. Haaaah!”

Jung So-hyeon sighed deeply, sounding like an old man.

But the after-service wasn’t over yet.

Boing boing.

Suddenly, the rabbits appeared, carrying something in their little paws.

Those of us soaking in the hot springs looked at them curiously as they began distributing cool drinks.

Beep!

It was adorable how each rabbit seemed eager to have us try their creation.

Smiling at their earnestness, we gratefully accepted and drank every beverage they brought.

“Come join us for a bath,” I said to the rabbits.

At my invitation, they jumped in.

Splash!

Their white fur became soaked, revealing their slim, streamlined bodies underneath.

“Puhaha!”

“So all that fluff was just fur, huh?”

Hanul and Young-seong chuckled, finding the drenched rabbits irresistibly cute.

Just then, distant chatter and the sound of footsteps signaled the arrival of more guests.

-(“><“)♡

A group of fairies had come to join us.

Frey, already soaking with us, pointed indignantly at the newcomers.

“So, you planned this without me! Nobody told me about a hot spring day!”

-(0-0)°

-(~~~)

The fairies teased Frey in their whimsical way, making playful gestures.

Their antics felt so peaceful that drowsiness began to wash over me.

‘I can’t fall asleep here,’ I reminded myself.

What a joyful day it had been.

I couldn’t help but wonder—what surprises would tomorrow bring?

Master 43

Prev I TOC I Next

Time passed after the academy’s midterm exams, and before I knew it, it was the day before the Talent Selection Tournament.

“Wow, that’s amazing.”

“….”

I had reserved an inn near the academy in advance and summoned the executives.

As I waited from early in the morning, I beamed with a smile when I saw Lady Hestia entering with them and began to praise her.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect the transformation to be this perfect. It’s beyond my expectations.”

“Even my eyes, which know the plan, find it completely convincing, so anyone unaware wouldn’t be able to tell the difference at all.”

Instead of her usual long brown hair, she now had short orange hair with a slight red tint.

Her previously flawless face was now naturally dotted with freckles.

Her typically gentle appearance had vanished without a trace, replaced by sharp eyes that somehow looked angry.

Dressed in rough clothing with compression bandages wrapped around her, Hestia no longer carried the noble aura of a saint.

Instead, she exuded the complete presence of a mere extra character.

“Mr. Bergen, you must have gone through a lot.”

Compared to the clumsy disguise Sasha had attempted at the mansion, this was a truly perfect result.

It was easy to imagine just how much effort Bergen, a master of disguises and makeup, had to put in.

“Ha, don’t even get me started. That saint couldn’t stay still for even a moment while I was applying the makeup, so I had to redo it multiple times….”

“……Still, you shouldn’t be smoking. Parsha is here, remember?”

“Ah, my bad. I’ve been around rough folks for so long that it’s become a habit.”

If it were just the saint or Runiel, I wouldn’t have minded.

But since Parsha was around the same age as my younger sibling, I couldn’t tolerate smoking in front of her.

I gave Bergen a pointed look as he rummaged through his cigarette pack, making him awkwardly mutter an excuse.

“Anyway, all of this is ultimately helping me find my daughter, right?”

“…Of course, Bergen.”

His eyes suddenly sharpened as he threw me the question.

I responded with a gentle smile and began to reassure him.

“Once this mission is perfectly completed, the saint and the Holy Nation will stand behind us. Don’t forget that.”

“Hmm.”

“And of course, I will spare no effort or resources in tracking down the hideouts of the black mages.”

“Is that so….”

Despite my words, Bergen’s expression remained dissatisfied.

Well, from his perspective, his daughter was likely suffering somewhere right now, while he was stuck doing something seemingly unrelated.

It was understandable that he felt uneasy.

“Also, this is a secret, but I’ve actually turned one of the black mages into an informant.”

“…What did you just say?”

“Even after this operation ends, I don’t know if I can maintain that connection, but if I can, you might be able to find your daughter very soon.”

Lowering my voice, I shared a piece of information I had obtained during the midterm exams.

Bergen’s pupils widened in response.

“So please, hold on just a little longer.”

“……”

“I promise you, the ones who brought you tragedy will pay the price.”

Bergen stared blankly at me for a moment.

Then, letting out a small scoff, he slumped into a chair in the corner and muttered.

“Honestly, when I was applying makeup on a girl young enough to be my daughter, I kept wondering what the hell I was doing….”

“···.”

“But yeah, I suppose. Someone like you probably has a plan I wouldn’t even understand.”

Being overestimated like this felt a bit burdensome.

Still, I was relieved that he seemed to understand.

“Alright, let’s go over the plan one last time.”

Now, it was time to focus on the operation scheduled for tomorrow.

“Our ultimate goal is to infiltrate the saint into the academy and have her encounter the Hero during the selection tournament.”

“The success of this plan hinges on the moment they come into contact. When they resonate, the saint’s body will emit a radiant glow, allowing us to confirm immediately.”

As I began explaining the plan, everyone fell silent and focused on my words.

For some reason, I started feeling deeply moved.

With such an elite team assembled, failure was not an option.

I needed to stay sharp.

“Now, let’s go over the details. Parsha, distribute the prepared maps.”

“Yes!”

At my command, Parsha, who had been lazily sprawled in her chair, jumped up excitedly and handed out the maps to everyone.

“Tomorrow morning, the saint will naturally blend into the procession of holy knights heading to the academy and enter the premises.”

“Um….”

“I’ll take all questions at once later.”

“Ah, okay….”

Hestia, who had been staring blankly at the map, hurriedly raised her hand but then sullenly lowered it at my words.

She then grabbed a cookie from the table and began munching on it.

Was she trying to enjoy her last indulgence before heading back to the Holy Nation?

Well, I didn’t mind, but if she drank alcohol, it could disrupt the plan, so I had to keep an eye on her.

“Anyway, once inside, the saint will disguise herself as a maid and naturally regroup with me.”

“Then, we’ll observe the situation together. If nothing unusual happens, she will subtly make contact with the tournament winners, and that will be the end.”

I cast a brief glance at Hestia, then shifted my gaze to the others as I wrapped up my explanation.

“That’s everything for now. Any questions?”

“…Me—oh. Ugh.”

Then, Hestia, who had stuffed her mouth full of cookies and was munching like a hamster, swallowed everything in one go and asked a question with an uneasy expression.

“W-Will it really be that easy for me to blend into the procession of the Holy Knights?”

It was hard to believe that this was the same person who used to tremble just at the sight of me not long ago.

But since she was at least sensible, her question was quite reasonable.

“I’m a little worried too. At the knight academy I attended, roll calls and headcounts were routine.”

As expected, Runiel, who had approached and was standing close beside me, voiced her concerns with a worried tone.

“I understand your concerns, but that part won’t be a problem.”

If I hadn’t prepared for something this basic, I wouldn’t deserve to be called an expert.

“…Because the very lodging where the Holy Knights will be staying upon arriving in the Empire tomorrow morning is right here.”

Of course, I had anticipated this and prepared accordingly.

“Naturally, one of the Holy Knights will be assigned to this very room as well.”

“Then….”

“I’ve already spoken to the innkeeper. Fortunately, he has a very close relationship with Alfred. Ha ha….”

However, as the atmosphere in the room grew heavier, I trailed off my laughter and looked around, tilting my head in confusion.

“Well, with the godfather’s influence, even the Holy Nation would have no choice but to comply.”

“That’s right! An inquisition only convicts the accused, but in the underworld, family members are dragged in as well….”

“Hah, you sure know a lot for a kid. Where did you learn that?”

“From my grandfather!”

“…What?”

Hestia’s complexion turned pale, which was one thing, but I couldn’t help but notice the ominous undertone in Bergen and Parsha’s conversation, even if I didn’t fully understand it.

“I think there’s a misunderstanding, but no one will get hurt.”

“…Really?”

“The innkeeper will simply lace their dinner with a sedative. Once they’re fast asleep, we’ll switch the knight’s armor and gear onto the saint.”

Feeling wronged by their reactions, I explained the plan in detail.

After hearing me out, Bergen quietly nodded, and the tense atmosphere gradually eased.

“I see, so they’re just a disposable pawn if necessary… But I was taught that evidence should be completely erased.”

“Kid, what exactly does your grandfather do for a living?”

Parsha was the only one still looking dissatisfied, muttering something under her breath, but since time wasn’t on our side, I ignored it.

“For reference, Paladins and the Holy Knights are required to be in full gear at all times, except during personal activities. That means they always wear their helmets.”

“Ah….”

“Since the saint hasn’t awakened yet, her level of divine power won’t be much different from that of an ordinary knight. That means she can blend into the procession perfectly.”

As I finished explaining, Runiel, who had been listening intently beside me, nodded in understanding.

“That’s why your role is crucial, Runiel.”

“Understood.”

“You’ll be hiding in the room with the saint, helping her change into the armor, and reacting swiftly in case of an emergency. You can handle that, right?”

“Of course.”

After encouraging her and pausing for a moment, Bergen, who had been glancing at Parsha, turned to me with a question.

“I have one more thing I’m curious about. Once the saint enters, who will help her disguise as a maid?”

“That would be you, Bergen.”

I answered cheerfully, only for Bergen to frown in displeasure and voice his complaint.

“Do you even realize how tight the academy’s security is? I need to prepare myself mentally if I’m going to infiltrate….”

“…So are you saying you can’t do it?”

“Well, it’s not impossible, but….”

“Alright, then I’ll count on you.”

Knowing full well that Bergen’s skills hadn’t rusted, I dismissed his complaints easily and turned my attention to Parsha, who had been eagerly raising her hand.

“You said that if nothing happens, the plan will be a success. Does that mean you suspect some kind of incident will occur during the selection tournament?”

As expected, the last question from Parsha pointed out the most critical issue.

“There’s a very high possibility of that.”

“Then we need countermeasures….”

“Of course, I’ve already prepared for that as well.”

I said that, but in reality, I couldn’t reveal the specifics of my plan.

Because if I did, everyone in this room would surely try to stop me—it was a reckless strategy.

“So if you notice anything suspicious, report it immediately.”

“But….”

“Don’t worry about me. Ha ha.”

Fortunately, everyone except Parsha seemed to accept that I had some sort of plan, so I was relieved.

“Something about this feels unsettling….”

“Alright, that concludes the operation briefing.”

With the plan reviewed once more, I finally felt ready to dive into the grand episode of the Talent Selection Tournament.

Depending on whether we successfully navigate this event, the fate of the world could change.

Of course, the fate of both myself and Lady Meredia as well.

“It’s time to move, everyone.”

The time for worrying was over.

“It’s time to save the world.”

Now, I had to throw myself into the grand current of events and reap the rewards of our efforts.

*****

“…Ah.”

With those stirring words, I was about to leave the inn, carrying a slight sense of excitement.

But the moment I opened the door, my heightened emotions froze over in an instant.

“W-Who are you, and why are you in my room?”

Standing at the entrance was a female knight dressed in the unmistakable white armor of the Holy Knights—who were supposed to arrive later.

“…Master, who told you the arrival time of the Holy Knights?”

“That was Prince Kendrick, I believe… Ah.”

As I stood there momentarily dazed, Parsha’s quiet question from behind helped me immediately grasp the situation.

…Did he mistake 9 AM for 9 PM?

Princess Katarina was the type to generously give away information when on your side.

But the problem was, half of what she shared was a ticking time bomb.

Now, I was facing her pure malice firsthand, and it made my head throb.

“I don’t know who you are, but please leave this room at once.”

“My comrades will be coming up soon, and things will get complicated if they see you here. It would be best if you left through the back door—”

For a moment, I silently observed the female knight, who was looking at us with innocent eyes and speaking in a gentle voice.

“Runiel. Bergen.”

“…Yes.”

“Sigh….”

In the end, I let out a deep sigh and gave the inevitable command to Runiel, who was already loosening up, and Bergen, who had started sighing heavily.

“Tie her up.”

And so, a small commotion ensued.

Prev | TOC I Next

The day after Seolgak’s attack on the colony, the entire place was in disarray, looking as if it had just been hit by a bomb.

Although Seolrang had killed Seolgak and Rine had stopped the Scorpion, the damage sustained was far from insignificant.

For starters, the city walls were gone.

Buildings along the Scorpion’s path had collapsed into ruins, and the area around Seolrang’s guild had been devastated by Seolgak.

Moreover, over 50% of the royal palace within the colony’s inner city had crumbled due to the Scorpion’s rampage, leaving the atmosphere inside the palace understandably grim.

In the midst of this chaos—

“…First, let me express my gratitude, Marquis Palatio. We’ve received your help once again.”

“It’s nothing. The credit belongs to Seolrang, not me.”

Alon was having an audience with Carmaxes III.

“Likewise, I thank you as well, Rine Groff. Truly, thank you.”

“Oh, it’s nothing. I was only able to act because of Godfather.”

“…? Godfather? Are you referring to Marquis Palatio?”

“Yes.”

Carmaxes shifted his gaze back to Alon.

“…Wasn’t Marquis Palatio with Seolrang?”

“Well, once that monster started causing trouble, I figured the Marquis wouldn’t want to be inconvenienced.”

“….”

Rine smiled, and Carmaxes sighed heavily, realizing with a resigned expression, ‘Ah, she’s one of those types too.’

It was already the fourth time he had sighed since meeting Alon.

After suppressing his frustration, he finally spoke again.

“Apologies. As you can imagine, the situation is quite the headache.”

“…I understand.”

Alon sympathized with Carmaxes III.

For the king of the colony, this entire ordeal had been nothing short of a disaster.

A natural disaster, really—one without anyone to blame.

As a result, the financial damage to the royal palace alone would be astronomical, even when accounting only for restoration costs.

Of course, there were options that didn’t involve spending beyond palace repairs, but those weren’t exactly ideal.

In short, the king’s mind was likely overwhelmed with stress.

He’d have to revise the government’s annual plans and scramble to reallocate the budget for the rest of the year.

Alon silently offered a brief moment of sympathy for the king.

Soon after, he left the temporary audience chamber and made his way to the ruined palace’s center.

“Marquis.”

“What is it?”

“Is it really okay for us to collect the corpse like this?”

Evan, walking behind him, asked the question.

Despite having been near the battleground where Seolgak and Seolrang fought, Evan didn’t have a single scratch on him.

Alon stared at him intently, prompting Evan to tilt his head in confusion.

“…? Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Ah, I’m just still amazed you’re completely unscathed.”

“Did you expect me to be injured…?”

“Well, not exactly.”

Of course, Alon knew why Evan was perfectly fine.

‘He said he broke through a window and escaped the moment he heard the commotion outside.’

Alon found himself once again impressed by Evan’s quick decision-making, then belatedly answered his question.

“In most other kingdoms, I wouldn’t be sure. But in the colony, there’s a tradition that grants all rights to the one who slays the monster. So, yes, it’s allowed.”

“Is that so?”

“Probably.”

To be honest, he wasn’t entirely certain of the tradition, but it had been mentioned a few times in the game, so he wasn’t wrong.

Anyway, thanks to Rine, Alon had secured the rights to the Scorpion’s corpse.

Before long, they arrived at the site where the body remained.

“…Wow. I saw it before, but it’s still ridiculously huge.”

“Indeed.”

They stood before the enormous corpse of the Scorpion, which filled most of the courtyard.

Its head was half-crushed, lying lifeless.

“…Rine.”

“Yes, godfather?”

“You said you took it down in one hit?”

“Hmm—not exactly one hit, godfather. Its outer shell was sturdier than I expected.”

She added that it probably took about three hits.

Alon looked back at the Scorpion.

‘Should I be impressed that it held out that long, or that Rine managed to take it down?’

In fact, Alon had been quite surprised when he first heard that Rine had defeated the Scorpion.

Taking down such a beast was no easy feat.

Although not as large as Rikrakamur, the Scorpion’s claws secreted an incredibly strong acid that could melt through any weapon.

Moreover, the dozens of venomous stingers it fired from its tail were instantly lethal if even one hit its target.

The sheer volume of projectiles alone made it deadly, and even surviving those attacks meant facing the risk of severe poisoning.

In other words, the Scorpion was, in some ways, an even tougher boss than Rikrakamur.

The reason Alon thought the Scorpion might’ve just endured well was because of what happened the night before.

When Alon, dumbfounded, asked how she managed to defeat the Scorpion, Rine casually summoned Pluto.

‘…If this thing withstood three hits from Pluto, then maybe the monster was impressive after all.’

Just imagining Pluto’s massive fists slamming into the ground was enough.

“Amazing. It’s not a creature that can be easily taken down.”

Alon praised Rine once again.

“Oh, it’s nothing. It’s thanks to the power you gave me, godfather. Honestly, I’m still not fully familiar with how to use it. I can only summon it about three times before reaching my limit.”

“…That’s you not fully knowing how to use it?”

“Yes. Right now, I only know the activation phrase and some basic controls.”

“…So, if you eventually learn to ‘fully’ use it, could you summon the weapon itself?”

“Maybe?”

Hearing that, Alon felt an odd sense of envy.

‘…That’s kind of cool.’

Clearing his throat to regain focus, Alon asked,

“…Are you really okay with me taking this corpse?”

“Do whatever you like, godfather. It’s useless to me.”

Grateful for her easygoing permission, Alon approached the massive corpse.

[Meow?]

As he neared the body, close enough to touch it, Blackie emerged from Seolrang’s grasp.

Unlike when playing with Seolrang, Blackie’s bright eyes sparkled with anticipation as it stared at the corpse.

It glanced at Alon, tilting its head as if waiting for permission.

Unlike last time, when it absorbed a monster without asking.

Seeing this, Alon thought, ‘…Is Blackie getting smarter?’

‘…If Blackie absorbs the corpse, will it also absorb the Sin Artifact?’

Truthfully, Sin Artifacts weren’t items Alon needed to acquire personally, as long as they didn’t fall into the hands of the Five Great Sins.

After a moment’s thought, Alon gave Blackie a slight nod.

Sssssss!

Blackie immediately darted toward the corpse and began absorbing it.

The massive body turned to dust in an instant.

“Huh?”

Evan, witnessing this for the first time, was stunned, while Rine watched with interest.

Before long, Blackie had completely devoured the corpse even faster than it had with Rikrakamur.

With a satisfied ‘meow-meow’ sound, it climbed back onto Alon’s shoulder, rubbing its head affectionately.

‘The artifact wasn’t absorbed.’

Where the Scorpion’s body once lay, a gray exoskeleton armor remained.

Alon had successfully acquired the Artifact of Pride.

***

A few days after retrieving the artifacts.

Once Alon confirmed that Seolrang had recovered to some extent, he began preparing to leave the colony. He had already completed everything he needed to do, and since he planned to visit the colony again in two months anyway, there was no reason to stay longer.

“I should’ve pretended to be sick a bit more.”

While Alon and his party were getting ready to depart, Seolrang grumbled with her tail drooping. Alon gently coaxed her.

“I’m planning to visit again in two months.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

When Alon nodded, Seolrang quickly regained her bright smile and stood right in front of him.

“Master! Do that thing for me!”

Her eyes sparkled with anticipation.

Looking down at her childlike face, Alon now naturally pressed both of her ears gently.

“—”

Seolrang hummed a tune, clearly in a good mood.

Since the Seolgak incident, Seolrang had stopped asking for head pats and instead preferred this gesture. Alon complied without complaint.

A conversation they had a few days ago flashed through his mind.

‘Seolrang.’

‘Hmm? What is it, Master?’

‘…Why do you keep asking me to cover your ears?’

‘Hmm~ you know, it just feels nice. I can feel your heart.’

‘…Heart?’

‘Like how I cherish you, Master, it feels like you cherish me too.’

‘Is that so?’

‘Yep.’

Cherish, huh.

“?”

Lost in thought about their conversation, Alon suddenly became aware of a sensation on his own ears.

Seolrang was reaching up, struggling to cover both of his ears with her small hands.

“What are you doing?”

“Mm— I wanted you to feel it too.”

“…To feel that I’m cherished?”

“Yep. Do you feel it?”

Amused by her playful smile, Alon let out a small chuckle.

“…What are they doing?”

Evan appeared, looking at them with disbelief, and Rine stood nearby, visibly annoyed.

And then—

“Master! See you in two months!”

“Yeah.”

With Seolrang’s cheerful farewell, Alon left the colony.

***

The second office of the Marquis Palatio—essentially used as Penia’s laboratory—was usually incredibly noisy.

Every day, without fail, it echoed with various terrifying screams. The furious shrieks of a woman mixed with the sorrowful wails—or rather, cries—of a man.

Because of this, the office had earned the grim nickname “The Room of Despair” among the staff, though no one found it particularly funny.

But today, it was unusually quiet.

Not even the usual clattering sounds or the noise of something being tightened could be heard.

It was so eerily silent that it would’ve shocked anyone familiar with the place.

Of course, Penia did have a visitor.

But even so—was it possible for ‘that’ Penia Crysinne to be this quiet?

She was someone who maintained the same attitude regardless of who came to see her.

The servants of the Marquis household glanced curiously at the so-called “Room of Despair” from afar.

Inside were two women—not the usual Crysinne siblings.

One of them was Penia.

Normally, if things didn’t go her way, she’d take it out on Felin and curse like a sailor, omitting even the title of “Marquis” from her tirades.

But now—

“……”

She was silently darting her eyes around, deliberately avoiding making eye contact.

In front of her stood—

“Hello, Penia Crysinne.”

The Cardinal of the Holy Kingdom,

“…I sent you a letter, but you never responded.”

A figure now rumored to be one of the top three most powerful people within the Holy Kingdom.

“So, I decided to come in person.”

Yutia Bludia stared at Penia Crysinne, her crimson eyes glowing faintly.

Round 288

Ara Hongryeon Guild

As the weather cooled with the end of summer approaching, the guild became increasingly hectic as year-end tasks piled up.

Han Seok-jun, the guild master, wiped away a bittersweet tear, thinking of the first and second team leaders, as well as the deputy guild master, who must have arrived at Kyu-seong’s house by now.

“I wanted to go too…” he muttered wistfully.

Yet, it was a happy complaint.

Once the year-end work was completed, there would be more time.

Even before that, he could always make time if he truly wanted to.

Kyu-seong had never refused visitors, so he could visit whenever he wished.

But for now, focusing on the present tasks was a priority.

Since Kyu-seong joined the Ara Hongryeon Guild, it had experienced explosive growth.

The guild had consistently maintained its number-one ranking in the country every month, even surpassing the renowned Terror and Iron Blood guilds.

This achievement was made possible thanks to Kyu-seong’s crops.

With all the buffs and recovery boosts they provided, it became possible to handle two dungeons in a single day—a natural result.

‘These days, all eyes are on us.’

Terror and Iron Blood had already reached some level of agreement to share Kyu-seong’s crops and coexist peacefully.

Additionally, Ara Hongryeon frequently collaborated with lower-tier guilds on joint dungeon expeditions, offering support.

Thus, domestically, there were no issues.

The real concern lay abroad.

Although Ara Hongryeon was a guild in decline, it still held symbolic significance as South Korea’s first guild and remained among the top five.

Due to its status, it had always been under constant scrutiny.

Now, with the guild rising to the top in Korea, it naturally became a hot topic.

At this point, most of the world, including the European Union and the United States, had become aware of Kyu-seong’s existence and the capabilities of his crops.

Han Seok-jun, realizing it was impossible to keep things hidden, decided to openly reveal everything.

As a result, both the Korean government and the U.S. were closely monitoring the situation.

And that wasn’t all.

It triggered a wave of mutual checks and balances from all directions, making Ara Hongryeon Guild the eye of the storm and, ironically, the safest place to be.

“Looks like the contract is about to end soon.”

It had been a year and six months.

Discussions regarding a renewal should have already been underway by now, but Han Seok-jun, not wanting to pressure Kyu-seong, had been waiting patiently.

Still, he thought he should at least mention it as a reminder.

Knock knock knock

“Guild master, it’s Lee Hae-sol.”

“Come in.”

Lee Hae-sol hurried over to Han Seok-jun, who was immersed in work, and delivered surprising news.

“A major incident has occurred in the U.S.”

“The U.S.?”

“The monsters in the Dungeon of Lust have vanished, including the boss, the White Nightmare.”

“The monsters vanished?”

What was this supposed to mean?

How could monsters in a functioning dungeon suddenly disappear?

“Was it a dungeon break?”

“I’m not sure of the details, but it’s reported that there was no break.”

“Monsters disappearing from a dungeon…”

While there had been rare instances of monsters escaping during dungeon breaks and then vanishing, this was the first time all monsters, including the boss, had suddenly disappeared from inside a dungeon.

“This information hasn’t been publicly disclosed yet.”

“Understood. I’ll look into it myself.”

The Seven Deadly Sins dungeons were immensely significant.

Such an event would inevitably cause a stir across the United States and attract global attention.

Even the strongest awakened beings on Earth—those ranked at level 9—had never dared to challenge the Seven Deadly Sins dungeons.

‘If they escaped outside the dungeon, it would be a major disaster.’

Contrary to Han Seok-jun’s grave thoughts, the White Nightmare, which was supposed to cause global turmoil, was calmly cooking.

***

“Ashu is happy!”

Ashu leisurely served guests and enjoyed a peaceful time.

Since most of the guests had experienced dungeon life before, there was no need for strict schedules or plans—everyone did as they pleased.

“Look at this, isn’t it pretty?”

Hanul strolled around the village with his mother, taking in the sights.

Young-seong went fishing with my father.

Seon-ah, Jung So-yeon, and Si-young played with the children.

“I should go greet Frey.”

“I’ll come with you, So-yeon.”

“Me too! Let’s go together!”

Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

“Great, great. No worries about the guests!”

While everyone was relaxing, I was working in the fields.

Hanul brought his mother over as I toiled away.

“This is the field.”

“Nice.”

Since the day we set the appointment, she had been taking the remedy right away.

Within just a few days, she was already showing signs of improvement.

“Young man, isn’t it tough for you?”

“I’m an awakened one too, ma’am. This is nothing for me.”

“Oh my, you’re impressive.”

She gave me a thumbs-up.

Unfortunately, she didn’t remember my previous visit, but she did remember Ara, probably because Ara had left a strong impression.

“Our mother used to farm too. At first, she started with a small vegetable garden, but over time, it kept getting bigger and bigger. Haha!”

Since she started going to the nursing home, she hadn’t been able to farm anymore.

However, with her recovery progressing little by little, perhaps she could return to farming someday.

“You should do it like this.”

With her guidance, we worked in the field together.

Thanks to her, I learned a few new things, and we wrapped up the work pleasantly.

“But young man, do you only work the fields?”

“I have rice paddies too. Would you like to take a look? Actually, how about a tour around the whole place?”

“Sure. By the way, what are those little creatures running around so eagerly?”

She smiled warmly, watching the slimes bustling about.

Their tiny, busy forms were undeniably cute.

I took Hanul and the elderly woman around to see the fields and rice paddies.

Along the way, we picked crops on the spot and checked out the jars where we stored our fermented sauces.

“Everything looks perfect.”

She gave another thumbs-up.

After tasting the gochujang and doenjang, she was full of praise and mentioned feeling a bit peckish.

“Are you hungry? Would you like to grab something to eat?”

“Sure.”

I wondered what kind of food she would prefer.

Almost any dish was possible to prepare.

Recently, Jae-seong had been teaching the rabbits how to cook.

Until the restaurant was fully built, it seemed like he would continue giving them cooking lessons every day.

Among the rabbits, Ashu had shown an extraordinary passion for learning how to cook, so they had mastered most of the recipes by now.

“Hello, everyone.”

Beep!

The rabbits in the kitchen waved cheerfully. Their adorable reaction surprised Hanul.

“What are these cute little things?”

“They’re new members of our village. They handle the cooking here.”

Come to think of it, I hadn’t introduced the newcomers to today’s visitors yet. I’d better do it properly when everyone gathered to eat later.

How surprised would they be to hear that a 24-hour rabbit-run restaurant had opened?

“Rabbits? Rabbits can cook?”

“They’re excellent chefs.”

“Oh my.”

The elderly woman seemed slightly uncomfortable. Since she had already been wide-eyed in amazement ever since entering the dungeon, I wondered how she would react when she met the other creatures here.

Beep

A rabbit approached and naturally handed over a menu.

For visitors who couldn’t communicate with the rabbits, we had prepared menus where they could simply check off their choices, and the rabbits would prepare the meals accordingly.

Beep

“Come here, oh my, how fluffy you are.”

A rabbit from the Breeding Tribe was scooped up by the elderly woman, who held it like a neighborhood puppy.

The rabbit looked up at me with wide, bewildered eyes, as if asking what was going on.

I pretended not to notice and chose from the menu.

“If there’s something not listed on the menu that you’d like, please let me know. I’ll relay it to the kitchen.”

“I’ll have doenjang jjigae, as expected! Haha!”

The elderly woman chose doenjang jjigae as well. Since both of them ordered it, I decided to go with it too.

“Three servings of doenjang jjigae, please. Make it generous—or better yet, prepare enough for six people.”

Beep!

The rabbit saluted, acknowledging the order, and headed back to the kitchen.

The elderly woman couldn’t take her eyes off the rabbit. She seemed utterly charmed by its actions.

“Would you like to see how they cook?”

“Is that okay?”

“Of course.”

After a moment’s hesitation, she got up and followed me.

As we headed to the kitchen, we saw the rabbits busily moving around.

It wasn’t just us—there were other customers too.

Three Kkumuris and five slimes were sitting together, waiting for their meals, looking adorably huddled together.

“Kkumuris!”

“Hello. What did you order?”

Glug glug

“Stir-fried vegetables? That’s tasty.”

Some had ordered scorched rice, others spaghetti. Seeing the variety of dishes they’d chosen made me smile.

In the open kitchen, the cooking proceeded with dazzling fire displays, and the way the chefs skillfully handled the cooking tools captivated Hanul and the elderly woman, leaving them speechless.

“They’re really cooking?”

“And not just cooking—they’re doing it exceptionally well.”

At Hanul’s astonished comment, I proudly added my own.

Soon, the food ordered by the earlier guests was served, and shortly after, our doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) arrived as well.

It only took 10 minutes.

“Mmm, the smell is amazing!”

Hanul was already gulping in anticipation, but he wasn’t the only one.

Gulp.

The rich, savory scent of the doenjang jjigae, combined with its spicy aroma, seemed to numb my senses.

“Let’s eat.”

“Let’s dig in! Haha!”

I started by taking a spoonful of the broth.

Slurp.

“Mmm.”

The taste didn’t disappoint—in fact, it exceeded expectations.

After savoring the incredible flavor of the stew, I found myself craving rice.

Scooping up a generous portion of steaming rice, I blew on it gently before placing it in my mouth.

The lingering taste and aroma of the doenjang jjigae mingled with the steaming rice, creating a delightful harmony.

I slowly chewed, savoring each grain of rice.

“Mmm…”

The rice was perfectly cooked.

Could this be the work of the Breeding Tribe too?

As I chewed, I scooped another spoonful of the broth.

Slurp.

Ah, this was it.

After repeating this cycle a few more times, my bowl was soon empty.

“One more bowl!”

“One more bowl!”

Hanul and I simultaneously called out, grinning at each other as we refilled our rice bowls.

One bowl, then two…

By the time we reached five bowls, we were full.

“Ugh…”

Maybe I ate too much.

But how could I resist when it was so delicious?

White rice and doenjang jjigae—an unbeatable combination.

“One more bowl!”

Meanwhile, Hanul, with his large build, was still eating.

“Still eating, huh?”

Just then, Young-seong returned with my father.

“You’re back?”

“What’s with these rabbits?”

“They’re chefs. Our newest recruits.”

“You really have a knack for recruiting unusual creatures. Where on earth do you find rabbits that can cook?”

“Did you finish fishing?”

“No, we just came for a quick bite. We’re planning to head back and continue fishing. Where are Si-young and So-yeon?”

“They seemed to have gone toward the fairy village. They mentioned they’d visit Sky Island later. How about joining them then?”

“Is there a place to fish on Sky Island?”

“I think there might be? I’ll ask Father.”

It was nice to see everyone enjoying themselves.

Now that I was full, it was time to check on the kids.

When I opened the minimap, I saw Ara was still marked in the fairy village.

She mentioned taking Gomgom to harvest some mushrooms, and it was about time to gather the World Tree mushrooms.

As I got up to head toward Ara’s location, Young-seong tilted his head.

“Rabbits? Rabbits…”

“Why?”

“Well, just before leaving the guild today, I vaguely overheard some news.”

“News?”

“Yeah. You know about the Dungeon of Lust in the U.S., right? Apparently, all the monsters there suddenly disappeared. I didn’t hear the full details, so I’m not sure, but I remember the monsters in that dungeon were rabbit-like creatures.”

“I-I see…”

…Well, I had expected this would get discovered sooner or later.

In fact, it was surprising that it had taken this long to be noticed.

Still, I never thought there would be any connection to our little ones.

Think about it—who would even consider abducting one of the Seven Deadly Sins bosses and bringing it to their home?

It was absurd.

Yet Young-seong’s reaction made me flinch slightly.

“Call me when you head to Sky Island. I’ll be fishing by the sea.”

“Understood!”

Young-seong, still intrigued by the Breeding Tribe, accepted a menu from them without hesitation.

I hope we won’t get caught…

Prev | TOC I Next

Alon knew nothing about the Essence of the Golden Mane Tribe.

That was only natural.

In the game ‘Psychedelia’, the Essence of the Golden Mane Tribe wasn’t an item used in such a way—it was merely an artifact that boosted a player’s critical hit rate.

And yet, he was able to give Seolrang advice because…

He had seen it.

The mana pattern of the essence Seolrang possessed began to twist abnormally, soon forming a nonlinear array that surged through her body.

Normally, it would’ve been impossible for Alon to perceive that pattern.

The same went for other mages.

Even a Tower Master who had reached the 8th Circle couldn’t have seen it.

While it might be possible to sense someone’s mana, discerning how it flowed was another matter entirely.

But now, Alon could.

It must’ve started after his battle with Duke Komalon.

He had gained the faint ability to see the mana patterns of others.

Yet, he hadn’t fully recognized this fact until recently.

No, he hadn’t thought much of it.

Though he could faintly perceive the patterns, they weren’t detailed enough to be of significant use in magic research or combat.

But at this very moment, Seolrang’s mana pattern was crystal clear.

He didn’t know why, but it was as if she had awakened.

That’s why Alon was able to advise her.

And Seolrang…

Had ascended to the 6th Stage.

Crackle!

Alon stared at her in awe.

Seolrang, now bathed in golden light, looked down upon the Apostle of Pride.

Her presence was so overwhelming that even Alon couldn’t help but let out a breath of admiration.

Just as she was about to strike again—

“Ha—!”

Seolgak moved.

Crack-crack-crackle!

Black lightning surged around him as he recoiled, his face contorted with pain.

He hadn’t been able to react when Seolrang awakened, and as a result, his right arm had been completely obliterated.

“Ghh…!”

Seolgak barely managed to clutch at the bleeding stump.

Grit!

But instead of crying out in pain, his face twisted with rage.

“…Fine, I’ll admit it. You got me, little sister.”

Crackle!

“But nothing’s going to change.”

Shrouded in black lightning like a cloak, he charged at Seolrang once more.

And the black thunder roared down.

Rumble!

Seolgak, surging toward Seolrang with black thunder crashing around him, struck her with such speed that even she couldn’t react.

The sheer velocity, far beyond human limits, caught Seolrang off guard, allowing his attack to land.

However, contrary to expectations, it was Seolgak’s expression that hardened.

In that fleeting moment, he realized—

Seolrang had raised her hand, dispersing the force of the blow.

Seolgak clenched his teeth, panic flickering in his mind.

‘My only chance is now.’

He knew it.

He knew what the Thunder Deification meant for the Golden Mane Tribe.

Even after receiving power from ‘Him’, Seolgak had never been able to reach that realm.

It made his insides churn.

What surged within him was not just inferiority—

But fear.

He had craved that realm more than anything.

He had sacrificed his entire family without hesitation, even intending to offer his own sister as ‘His’ vessel.

And so, he already knew—

Now that Seolrang had reached that realm, he could never win.

That’s why…

‘I have to kill her before she fully adapts to the Thunder Deification…!’

Seolgak’s eyes turned bloodshot as he unleashed his mana.

The overwhelming power granted by ‘Him’ devoured his body, granting him strength he could never have achieved on his own.

But power without purpose comes at a price.

The excessive strength, beyond his limits, began to not only consume but collapse his very flesh.

Yet, he wielded it without hesitation.

The power bestowed by the Great Sin of Pride had allowed him to overwhelm most of the world’s strongest beings—

But it was nowhere near enough to reach that golden god.

All it did was buy him a little more time.

‘No matter what, I’ll kill her before she adapts!’

Consumed by prideful mana, Seolgak became black mana incarnate, shooting forward toward Seolrang.

And with that—

Black thunder and golden lightning rained down across the entire colony.

Obsidian lightning shattered the world.

Golden lightning etched itself into the heavens and earth.

Amidst the chaos—

“…It’s ready.”

Alon muttered quietly, gazing up at the sky.

***

In truth, Alon shouldn’t have been able to participate in this battle.

Seolgak was recklessly overclocking his power, even at the cost of his body, to kill Seolrang, while Seolrang was fending off his onslaught.

There was no way Alon could keep up with their speed.

That’s right.

To him, this battle was nothing more than a natural disaster, filled with deafening thunder, golden lightning, and black storms.

He simply lacked the ability to step into their world.

However, Alon could still calmly observe the situation.

Thanks to the lingering traces of mana left behind by their clash.

The mana residue from their battle provided him with valuable insights.

His recent focus on magical research, especially on mana patterns based on ‘seals’, had been a great help.

While he couldn’t fully grasp the entire situation from the lingering mana alone, he could still gather key information.

The two most crucial facts were:

‘The Apostle of Pride is overexerting himself to deal with Seolrang, and Seolrang hasn’t fully adapted to her awakening yet.’

Alon stared into the void.

He still couldn’t see clearly.

Only mana fluctuations appearing and dissipating, allowing him to infer patterns.

After taking a steady breath—

“Hoo—”

Alon formed a seal.

As mentioned, Alon couldn’t participate in this battle.

It was impossible.

At least, it would’ve been for the Alon of the past.

He looked up at the sky again.

Amidst the scattered mana residues of the two Golden Mane Tribe members, his own mana had quietly spread.

Though not yet fully manifested, his mana drifted invisibly through the air.

Mana typically required ‘manifestation’ to take form.

But Alon had broken that convention.

Drawing out almost all of his mana from his mana hall, leaving only the bare minimum, was thanks to his recent research with Penia.

Through exploring mana pattern transformations based on seal structures, he had discovered new forms of mana molecules.

This allowed him to control his mana in its molecular state without manifesting it, anchoring it in the air.

And with ample preparation time, Alon had managed to scatter his mana across the entire battlefield.

‘Of course, due to the lack of abundant mana, its density was inevitably low.’

But that was enough for now.

After all, Alon’s goal wasn’t to deal with Seolgak—

“Expansion (膨脹).”

—but simply to create a brief opening for Seolrang.

Rumble!

As Alon muttered, the mana molecules he had scattered began to expand all at once.

In that fleeting moment—

“1.”

Alon could see it.

Seolrang, dragged out of the battle by the suddenly expanding mana in the air.

“What the—?!”

And Seolgak, striking at her in that very instant.

Without a moment to spare, Alon spoke the next incantation.

“Point (點).”

The expanding mana instantly converged onto Seolgak.

However—

Boom!

The magic Alon had prepared for minutes, holding his breath, was completely shattered with nothing more than an irritated kick from Seolgak.

A single blast of black thunder erased all the mana Alon had expanded.

A crushingly futile situation for Alon, unfolding in less than two seconds.

Yet, a crooked smile crept behind his expressionless face.

Two seconds.

For him, two seconds wasn’t even enough time to properly cast a spell.

But for Seolrang—

“1.”

Two seconds was more than enough to deal with Seolgak.

Alon didn’t take his eyes off the sky.

There, with an expression of horror, Seolgak looked upward.

“Rangchangrangchang (槍狼槍)—”

And descending from above—

Thunder Dragon’s Descent (龍降臨).

A golden dragon.

Roooooaaaaar!!!

The world turned white.

***

Shortly after.

A crater, impossibly wide and deep, had formed there.

And at its center stood Seolrang.

Her Thunder Deification had faded, and she gazed silently downward.

At her feet lay the Apostle of Pride, Seolgak.

With a massive hole in his heart.

“Stupid… really.”

Despite having his heart pierced, leaving no chance of survival, Seolgak glared at Seolrang with wide, furious eyes.

“You’ll regret this, little sister. You’ll definitely regret the day you discarded the powers I arranged for you… You’ll regret it!”

Seolgak’s desperate screams.

But Seolrang remained expressionless as she lifted her leg.

“I don’t need any of that.”

Crack!

She crushed his head as if she no longer needed to hear another word.

“I’ve already gotten what I wanted.”

Watching as Seolgak’s body crumbled to dust, as if he had never existed, Seolrang turned her gaze.

“Ah, Master!”

She spotted Alon and tried to run toward him—

Thud!

But collapsed immediately.

Alon rushed over to check her condition.

“Huh? My body won’t move at all.”

Seolrang’s carefree remark, despite having just fallen, made Alon let out a small sigh of relief.

“It’s probably because you overexerted yourself a bit.”

“Is that it, Master?”

“Yes.”

Seolrang nodded briefly as if that made sense, then softly whispered.

“Thank you, Master.”

“…All of a sudden?”

“Yeah. You taught me how to use Thunder Deification. Thanks to you, I was able to kill him.”

Thank you, huh.

Alon was silent for a moment before speaking.

“Seolrang.”

“Yes, Master?”

“…Are you okay?”

“Hm? About what?”

“…You care deeply about your family.”

Seolrang smiled at his question.

A bitter smile Alon had never seen before.

But—

“…Yes, Master. I do cherish my family.”

“…”

“But you know what?”

This time, a bright smile appeared on her face.

“I’ll never do something that makes me lose something even more precious. I’m not a fool.”

“…”

Hearing her resolute words, Alon realized something without even meaning to.

He had been perceiving her just like Seolgak had—through his own assumptions.

Just as Seolgak still saw Seolrang as the naive, weak child from ten years ago,

Alon had been viewing her as one of the Five Great Sins from ‘Psychedelia’.

Even though they’d shared memories and experiences, he had still clung to that bias.

Not as Seolrang, who now showed him a bright smile and had become the first Baba Yaga of the colony—

But as a character who could always become one of the Five Great Sins in the game.

But now he understood.

Seolrang was no longer a mere in-game villain or someone Alon needed to cautiously watch over.

She was someone who valued her family with her life but could still make necessary choices without hesitation.

In some ways, she had grown stronger and wiser than Alon himself.

“…I see.”

Alon chuckled softly without realizing it, feeling lighter inside as he looked at her.

“Master… you can smile?”

“…?”

Seolrang looked up at him with a face more surprised than ever before.

It was faint, but it was a smile that touched the heart.

***

Some time later.

After hearing that Rine had dealt with the Scorpion, Seolrang rested against a ruined wall to recover.

“Master.”

“Hm?”

“Do that thing again.”

“What thing?”

“The ear thing.”

“…Why?”

“It felt nice.”

Seolrang giggled, and Alon gently pressed her ear without question.

Closing her eyes slowly, Seolrang spoke.

“Master.”

“What is it?”

“Thanks for worrying about me.”

“…Of course I’d worry.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

At his answer—

“…I see.”

A small smile crept onto Seolrang’s lips.

It was an afternoon where the setting sun could be seen beyond the broken walls of the colony, fading over the horizon.

Round 287

Prev | TOC | Next

Winter had ended.

As the white snowfields vanished in an instant, a sense of longing lingered.

However, before that longing could fully settle, we welcomed the fresh, green season and began moving diligently.

“Alright, pack it tight.”

“Pack it tight!”

Together with the children, we planted seeds and crops in the field we had prepared in advance.

We started with the ones requested from the U.S.

After that, we planted various fruit tree saplings we had received from the guild.

‘Grapes, pears, peaches, tangerines.’

And although it’s not a tree, we even planted watermelons.

We brought in a large quantity of fruits this time.

I wanted to try growing tropical fruits too, but since planting too many at once would have been overwhelming, I wrapped it up here for now.

To be honest, there were still coffee and green tea left, but Junichi from Japan said he would get those for us, though it might take some time.

“Well, since he’s someone who’s passionate about food, it’ll probably take a while.”

While I was lost in thought, we finished planting all the seeds.

Now the task requested by the U.S. was complete.

“Waaaah!”

“Well done!”

“I’m hungry!”

Emily, Ara, and Cheong.

After working hard with the three of them, we enjoyed refreshing strawberry milk.

“Gulp, gulp. Ahh!”

It was delicious!

Strawberry milk after finishing work was incomparable to anything else.

“I should tell Seon-ah to start raising cows soon.”

Recently awakened, Seon-ah had been gradually studying and researching her abilities.

Since she was already aiming to become a monster veterinarian, she seemed to enjoy each day even more, having acquired such a fitting ability.

But still… wouldn’t it be a waste to use such an ability only as a veterinarian?

I immediately asked Seon-ah if she had considered raising livestock monsters.

At first, she naturally refused.

However, I wasn’t asking for meat; I was interested in the monsters’ fur or milk.

“She said she’d think about it, though.”

Of course, just because it’s monster milk doesn’t necessarily mean it tastes better than regular milk.

And the same went for the fur.

As far as I knew, there were few monster furs better than wool.

‘I heard they’re extremely expensive…’

Naturally, since it wasn’t possible to capture and raise monsters, the prices were bound to be high.

If Seon-ah succeeded in raising them, she would be the first.

Of course, I had no intention of making financial profit from this.

It was too troublesome, and I just wanted enough for our family to eat and wear.

“Alright, since everyone worked hard, shall we go have breakfast?”

“Sounds good!”

“Breakfast! It’s breakfast time!!”

I took the children to the kitchen.

There, the rabbits greeted us warmly.

“Hello, everyone.”

The Breeding Tribe worked in shifts, meaning that regardless of day or night, we could always find freshly made food whenever we visited the kitchen.

Seeing the 1,300 members of the Breeding Tribe, I thought they were numerous, but thanks to them, we experienced a 24-hour open kitchen.

“Now, what’s on the menu today?”

“I want today’s special and sweet potato fries!”

They made whatever menu we requested.

If we didn’t have a specific menu in mind, the Breeding Tribe children would decide and prepare something for us.

“Oh, pancakes! Pancakes are the best for breakfast!”

Pancakes with Alfheim honey.

It was an unbeatable combination.

The pancakes were made with gosogoso flour, so they exuded a rich aroma.

“Wow, this looks delicious.”

“Let’s share.”

Seeing Emily drool over the pancakes, I gave her a portion.

Emily’s meal was vegetable bibimbap.

“Mmm!”

The soft and sweet honey.

The fluffy texture and rich aroma of gosogoso flour.

The savory flavor of the pancake mixed perfectly with the honey, creating a harmonious blend.

– Beep!

Salad as a bonus?

Thanks!

I enjoyed the pancakes and salad thoroughly.

I also spread honey generously on Emily’s portion and shared it with her while stealing a spoonful of her bibimbap.

‘Great!’

The vegetables were incredibly fresh.

They tasted so good that it was hard to believe they were just vegetables.

Although I usually preferred meat, ever since I started farming, my palate had changed a lot.

Vegetables that taste better than meat?

If I hadn’t experienced it myself, I would’ve found it hard to believe.

And now we even had kangnang jerky.

Vegetables that taste like meat.

The bibimbap and salad both contained kangnang.

It was a miraculous plant that tasted almost exactly like meat—about 100% identical.

It was especially rich, with plant oil seeping out like juice, perfectly replacing the fat in meat.

“Sweet potato fries, sweet potato fries.”

Ara sang happily as she ate her upgraded sweet potato fries.

Currently, the crops had leveled up considerably.

The highest level, tomatoes, were already at level 5.

Even sweet potatoes had reached level 4.

Compared to level 1, they had naturally become much tastier.

Moreover, by adding various extra ingredients, the flavors had become richer, making it impossible for them not to taste great.

“Ugh.”

Ah!

I ended up eating too much for breakfast.

In that case, there was only one solution.

“Nap time!”

“Nap time!”

Living life exactly as we wanted.

That’s why I’m happy.

There were things to do, but I wasn’t bound by time.

If something couldn’t be done today, it could wait until tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the crops that were already planted were being taken care of by the playful slimes.

I lay down on a hammock in the village.

Each of us claimed a hammock, and as we lay there, it felt like paradise.

With winter gone, the temperature had risen slightly, but a cool breeze was blowing, making it feel like a pleasant autumn day.

We took a nap for about an hour with the children.

I felt something nudging me and opened my eyes to see Kkumuri beside me.

– Heheh.

“Hey there. What’s up?”

Kkumuri gestured with its body, as if telling me to follow it.

Scratching my head, I got up.

I glanced to the side and saw the children peacefully napping.

“Cute.”

Ara was drooling with her mouth open, Cheong was curled up like a pill bug, and Emily was comfortably sprawled in her hammock.

I decided to follow Kkumuri while the kids were still asleep.

Kkumuri led me to where Purr was.

Gulug!

Seeing Purr after a long time, I waved cheerfully.

“Purr, haven’t seen you around lately!”

Gulugulug

Purr greeted me warmly and began explaining why he had been so busy lately.

Kkumul!

Gulug~!

“Ah, you were busy managing the new fields in the rabbits’ village.”

With the sudden increase in population, especially the Breeding Tribe, who now outnumbered our original family members several times over, food was a bit of an issue.

Of course, we had been summoning slimes regularly, so there were plenty of farmers.

Thanks to that, even with the expanded fields, there were enough workers.

– Heheh.

“Alright, alright.”

Kkumuri urged me to keep following.

I thought we were just here to greet Purr, but apparently, this wasn’t our destination.

Curious, Purr decided to tag along.

We soon arrived at a warehouse.

“Huh?”

A warehouse? What’s going on?

I had recently asked the Kkumuri to manage the warehouse.

Since they had even learned numbers, they were practically invincible at organization.

When we entered the warehouse, I finally understood what was happening.

– Groo?

– Sooo!

“Oh, Gomgom, you’re awake?”

Gomgom and Soo were there.

But these two had made quite a mess.

Honey was spilled everywhere, along with various crops.

It seemed that Gomgom, who had just woken up from hibernation, was hungry. He didn’t seem to realize that he could have gotten food from the rabbits in the kitchen.

– Grooo?

Even though Gomgom looked guilty, glancing around nervously, he couldn’t stop licking the honey off his mouth and paws.

“Let’s clean up first.”

We started cleaning up with the Kkumuri.

Feeling sorry, Gomgom and Soo joined in, though they weren’t much help.

‘But they’re cute, so that’s enough.’

Their cuteness alone made up for it.

Once we finished tidying the warehouse, I lifted Gomgom up.

– Kwang?

“Time for a bath.”

It was his punishment for getting himself covered in honey.

I carried Gomgom and headed toward the stream.

Once we started washing the sticky fur with water, Gomgom happily splashed around.

– Sooo.

“Soo, come here. You need to wash too.”

Soon, Soo joined in, and the two of them started playing in the water.

When Kkumuri and Purr joined in as well, the sound of splashing water echoed around us.

“What’s this noise?”

“Oh, Ara, you’re awake.”

It seemed the sound of us playing in the water had woken Ara up, and she approached, rubbing her eyes.

Before long, she jumped in with a splash.

Sploosh, sploosh.

She looked half-asleep but was happily splashing around in the water.

Soon, the children started spraying water at each other as they played.

“Uncle.”

“Dad.”

Emily and Cheong, who had also woken up, joined us.

Before long, we were all soaking wet from the water play.

“Wait a moment. I’ll go grab some towels and a change of clothes.”

By now, it was time for everyone to wake up.

Since we had been up and active since dawn, it was only now that the others were starting to wake.

Of course, Kyler had woken up even earlier than us and was currently exploring a dungeon nearby.

He should be back soon.

I dried the children off with towels and helped them change into clean clothes.

Just then, we greeted the family members who had woken up and were eating breakfast.

“Good morning!”

“It’s nice to see you all so energetic in the morning.”

Mother enjoyed her meal with a bright smile.

Ara quickly ran over to her, showing her affection.

Having played in the water right after waking up, the children were a bit hungry, so they snacked on something light.

Before we knew it, Kyler had returned.

“Dad!”

“You’re up early.”

“We helped with farming, took a nap, and now we’re having a snack.”

Emily replied cheerfully with a bright smile.

Watching her, Father suddenly asked,

“Is all the work done?”

“Are we going fishing?”

“Well, I just thought if we had some spare time, I could take the kids and enjoy some fishing.”

Father spoke with a slightly embarrassed expression.

Seon-ah, finding his reaction amusing, smiled and added,

“Perfect timing! The rabbits asked us to gather more seafood. We can go fishing and collect some shellfish or crabs too.”

“Father, would it be okay if I finished up some farm work before we head out? You can go ahead and start fishing.”

“No need. I’ll come along and help out.”

After finishing our meal, everyone, including Father, headed to the field together.

“Wow, fruit trees! Amazing!”

“The saplings look healthy. We’ll be able to make some delicious desserts.”

Seon-ah cheered, and Jae-seong smiled.

Soon, we all started planting the saplings and seeds.

The process wasn’t too difficult.

Since we had already gotten the hang of planting apple trees, we were quite efficient.

However, unlike those of us who were familiar with farming, the others, for whom this was their first experience planting saplings, found the whole process fascinating and enjoyable.

“Grow big and strong, little tree!”

Ara patted the soil gently, finishing up her planting.

As if in response to her words, the grapevine she had just planted swayed gently in the breeze.

Time passed, and soon the day of our scheduled meeting with my brothers arrived.

It was also an opportunity to reunite with familiar faces we hadn’t seen in a long time.

“You all came!”

“Hello, Kyu-seong! Hey, Ara!”

Si-young greeted us eagerly, her face full of excitement.

Behind her were Young-seong, Hanul, and Hanul’s mother.

Unfortunately, the guild master couldn’t make it due to his busy schedule, but from the looks of it, everyone else had barely managed to carve out some time in their busy lives.

‘Well, it has been quite a while since their last visit. No wonder they wanted to come so badly.’

Was the last time during the guild gathering?

In any case, this time we had new sights and more delicious food to share, so they were more than welcome.

“Welcome, everyone!”
