Master 42

“Ugh…”

As I open my eyes, feeling a throbbing headache, I see a ceiling and an environment all too familiar.

“…Was it a dream?”

The white ceiling I’ve grown sick of seeing and the pungent smell of disinfectant.

It seems that I am inside a hospital room, the place where I spent most of my past life.

“Ugh. Ha…”

Realizing this, my breath starts to quicken involuntarily.

Could it be that everything up until now was just a dream and I’m still in a state where I can’t even get up and walk?

If that were true, maybe it would be better to just die like this…

“You finally seem to be coming to your senses.”

“…Ah.”

“You collapsed and lost consciousness right after escaping the labyrinth.”

As I was drowning in dark thoughts, biting my lips, a familiar voice from beside me brought me back to my senses.

“Lady Meredia, it’s really great to see you again…”

“Are you repeating yourself? Seems like you haven’t fully come to your senses yet.”

“…That’s just how much I missed you. Haha.”

Seeing the most definitive proof that everything I experienced wasn’t a dream, I chuckled foolishly. But soon, my mind quickly turned cold.

‘So, the black mages were indeed trying to interfere with this year’s Talent Selection Tournament.’

Considering they had already been trying to corrupt a substitute for the saintess at the academy, it’s clear that they intend to meddle in the selection process.

If I can’t stop them outright, then the best course of action would be to take advantage of my current situation—having gained Rebecca as an informant—and crush their plans.

For that, more than anything, I need Lady Meredia’s cooperation.

“My Lady, would you mind listening to my story for a moment?”

“…What is it?”

With my thoughts clear, I began explaining to Meredia, who was sitting on a chair beside my bed with her arms crossed and legs casually crossed, everything that had happened inside the labyrinth.

“…And that is the sequence of events that occurred within the labyrinth.”

“What do you think? Quite eventful, isn’t it?”

After some time had passed and I finished my explanation, I observed Lady Meredia’s expression, waiting for her reaction.

“You’re telling me to believe that…?”

She initially looked at me as if I was speaking nonsense and was about to speak further with a sharp gaze.

“…No, never mind. As ridiculous as it sounds, I’ll believe you.”

However, after pausing for a moment, she unexpectedly changed her stance and kept her response brief.

“That was quicker than I expected.”

“I just don’t think you’d be lying at this point.”

When I asked about her reasoning, slightly bewildered, Lady Meredia shot me a doubtful look, but her voice was calm and composed.

“Right? Haha…”

“I’m barely restraining myself from strangling you right now, so could you stop laughing?”

For some reason, I found her words touching, so I smiled again—only to hurriedly shut my mouth at the chilling remark.

“I thought you had suffered a fatal injury, but it turns out it was self-inflicted. That’s not even funny.”

“…I have no excuse for that.”

In my past life, even lying still felt like knives were stabbing into my body. A superficial wound meant nothing to me.

“Please, at least consider my position next time?”

Lady Meredia scolded me with a stern expression, but I noticed a faint tremor in her right hand.

From what I know, that trembling is one of her habits that appears when something triggers her trauma or when she experiences intense emotions.

“Thank you for worrying about me.”

“…Shut up.”

“You were keeping an eye on me the whole time, just in case something went wrong, weren’t you?”

“I said shut up.”

Feeling even more moved, I expressed my gratitude, but she immediately shut me down with an icy remark.

“Wait, don’t tell me…?”

“This is really… I don’t even know what to say—ow.”

Noticing that her usual irritation or killing intent was absent from her words, I grinned mischievously. But before I could say more, she smacked me in the side with her fan, silencing me.

“Anyway, if what you say is true, then it’s certain that the black mages will make their move during the Talent Selection Tournament.”

Still giving me a look of exasperation, Meredia returned to the main topic.

“Do you know what exactly they’re planning to do?”

“They’ll likely summon the demon they failed to bring forth during the previous engagement ceremony.”

“And what do they gain from that?”

“…That…”

I had been answering her questions as sincerely as possible, but when she asked this, I hesitated.

‘Should I really tell her about the Demon King and the Hero now?’

In most routes of the original story, Meredia was manipulated by the black mages and ultimately became the Demon King who brought about the world’s destruction.

Even the curse currently afflicting her is likely related to that, based on my knowledge.

While Lady Meredia trusts me considerably now, knowing that she’s cursed and knowing the truth about the Demon King are two vastly different things.

If I handle this poorly, I might end up touching her reverse scale and losing her trust in an instant.

“I don’t know why you’re hesitating, but I can take a guess.”

As I remained deep in thought, Meredia, who had been silently observing me, spoke up first.

“There’s something or someone in the academy that absolutely must be eliminated, isn’t there?”

She arrived at a conclusion close to the truth without me even saying anything.

As expected, she’s just as quick-witted as she is powerful.

“Don’t worry. Whatever your plan is, I’ll cooperate.”

“…Thank you?”

Bracing myself for further interrogation, I was caught off guard when she simply accepted my answer without prying further.

“If it’s about screwing over those black mages, all the more reason to help.”

“Of course. No doubt about that.”

“…But really, do you not know why the monsters obeyed your command?”

Just as I was about to feel relieved, she asked another question.

“If you’re hiding anything related to black magic…”

“……”

“I won’t forgive you. No matter who you are.”

She leaned forward, placing both hands on my bed, and whispered coldly, her gem-like eyes glowing red.

“…I know you have doubts, but I swear, I’m innocent in this matter.”

“That almost sounds like you’re admitting you weren’t innocent in other matters.”

“That just means this is an exception.”

For a moment, I could clearly feel a deadly aura from Lady Meredia, something I usually never sensed from her.

“I think it was just a temporary phenomenon. The summoning circle went haywire and called forth monsters in large numbers, and they must have mistaken me for their summoner for some reason.”

“Even if that’s the case, there’s no guarantee it won’t happen again… Wait.”

In the middle of her sentence, Lady Meredia’s gaze dropped—not at me, but to the floor beneath her.

Curious, I followed her line of sight.

—Squeak…!

A small spider-like monster peeked out from the shadows cast by the sunlight streaming through the window and tapped against her foot.

I blinked in stunned silence.

—How dare you… radiate killing intent?

Wait, isn’t this the one that was unusually clingy toward me in the labyrinth?

I thought all the monsters disappeared when the maze collapsed… so why is it here?

“Um, My Lady, this is…”

……

“My Lady?”

Flustered, I turned to explain, but before I could, Meredia suddenly climbed onto the bed without a word.

“…Ah.”

Then, she grabbed the blanket covering me and yanked it up with a stiff expression.

Watching her, I suddenly remembered a detail from the setting book—her fear of spiders.

One of the few humanizing traits about her was that she was terrified of arthropods—especially spiders.

—Hehe. Scary, aren’t I?

The problem wasn’t just that Lady Meredia feared spiders; it was that she had more than enough power to obliterate an entire hospital wing if she saw one.

“Don’t just stand there. Get inside.”

To prevent such a disaster, I hastily commanded the spider peeking out from my shadow.

—If you ever need me again, call upon me, human…

Fortunately, before Meredia could unleash a barrage of spells, the little creature slowly sank back into the shadows and vanished.

But apparently, it wasn’t the only uninvited guest in my hospital room.

“Lady Meredia told us not to let anyone in, so I almost got a leg cramp just waiting outside… Huh?”

“…Hic.”

At that moment, the door swung open at an unbelievably bad timing.

Princess Katarina entered, followed by Cecil and Lady Adele, both carrying a basket of fruit. But upon stepping inside and seeing the scene before them, their eyes went wide, and they froze in place.

In the silence, Adele let out a weak gasp and dropped the basket she was holding, causing the fruits to roll across the floor.

“So… it wasn’t about one of them blackmailing the other? They were actually… like this?”

Beside her, Cecil murmured with a blank expression that didn’t suit her at all.

“W-We seem to have misunderstood something.”

“Wait a minute.”

“I-If that’s the case, we’ll just be on our way. Please, enjoy yourselves.”

Displaying an unusual quick-wittedness, Katarina turned bright red, grabbed Cecil and Adele, and began backing out of the room.

“…I’m going to lose my mind.”

Rumors about me were already turning into bizarre urban legends among my household staff. Now, I might become everyone’s favorite gossip.

*****

A few minutes later.

“Ahem, ahem.”

“……”

“So, uh. Did you finish… your business?”

Katarina re-entered the room, still dressed in her disguise as a man, and cleared her throat before speaking in an oddly suggestive tone.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

“No need to explain. I completely understand…”

“…Just get to the reason you’re here.”

Meredia, still sitting on the chair beside my bed, crossed her arms and glared daggers at me, her voice icy. Katarina flinched but managed to respond.

“Well, I came here not just for a visit but also to deliver some news.”

Ignoring Meredia’s freezing stare, I focused on Katarina’s words.

“First, your appointment as a judge has been unanimously approved by the academy board.”

“I see. That’s good to hear.”

“Of course, that’s only if you recover in time for the tournament.”

“That won’t be a problem. I might look worse than I am, but I can get up and walk just fine.”

To prove my point, I spun my arm in circles, showing that I was perfectly functional.

“That’s a relief. Now, onto the main issue…”

Katarina hesitated for a moment before finally delivering the bad news.

“The Holy Kingdom has requested to attend the Talent Selection Tournament as observers.”

“…What?”

Even Meredia, who had been glaring at me, widened her eyes at this information.

It seemed this was news to her as well.

“Sir Whitney, I need a word—”

“There’s no need to whisper. Lady Meredia is on our side.”

“…Then I’ll be direct. Are you sure this is okay?”

Katarina abandoned any pretense of secrecy and asked the question bluntly, her expression tense.

“It’s already difficult enough to smuggle the Saintess into the academy, but now we have to deceive the Holy Kingdom too?”

Of course, to Katarina, who had unexpectedly ended up on the same side as me, this was a disaster.

“…Your plan will still work, right?”

“Your Highness, there’s nothing to worry about.”

In reality, she had no reason to be concerned.

“This was part of my plan from the very beginning.”

The Holy Kingdom’s request to observe the tournament was something that had happened in the original story.

In other words, I had already accounted for it.

“To be precise, this is how the Saintess will infiltrate the academy.”

“…How is that even possible?”

“Ahaha, well…”

Looks like it’s time to contact my people at the mansion.

“There’s a way. Trust me.”

With all preparations in place, it was finally time to face the events of the Talent Selection Tournament head-on.

*****

That night, at Count Lingard’s office.

“Oh? What kind of liquor are we having tonight—Huh?”

Hestia, who had become somewhat accustomed to these summons, entered the office with slight anticipation. But upon stepping inside, she stopped dead in her tracks, eyes widening.

“Welcome!”

“What… is this?”

Inside, Parsha, Runiel, and even Bergen—who had been busy stirring up trouble in the underworld—were gathered, silently watching her.

“Our master has finally given the order!”

“…?”

“We’re just following instructions , so don’t blame us too much, alright?”

“W-Wait, what are you…!”

Before she could react, Runiel swiftly grabbed her arms from behind.

“Whew. This will be over quickly, so just bear with it.”

Bergen, standing up with a reluctant expression, pulled out a metal toolbox from his coat.

Hestia’s eyes darted around in panic.

“W-What are you doing to me?”

“Hey, knight. Hold her down tight so she doesn’t struggle.”

“…Understood.”

And just a few seconds later—

“HIIIK! AHH! I-It tickles!”

“…We might need to gag her too.”

“W-Wait, mmph—! Mmph!!”

The eerie noises that started leaking from the office that night would later become another chapter in the infamous rumors surrounding the Lingard estate.

「…If you hear screams coming from the office, cover your ears and walk away immediately.

Nothing that would cause screaming ever happens in the master’s office.」

Clearly, Alon was ignorant about the Apostles.

He had never encountered an Apostle while playing ‘Psychedelia’, and the game’s lore had no mention of the Apostles of the Five Deadly Sins.

However, there was one thing Alon had come to understand with crystal clarity about this ‘Apostle’ now:

Boom!

They were strong.

He stared ahead.

Over the ruins of what had once been the towering building of the Seolrang Guild, flashes of bright yellow and dark lightning clashed at speeds his eyes couldn’t possibly keep up with.

And then—

“Gah—!”

Seolrang was being pushed back.

Crash!

With a deafening blast, Seolrang was hurled away, and the Apostle’s fist shot forward to deliver another blow.

Alon reacted immediately.

Catching Seolrang as she crashed into the ground, he deployed a shield.

But that wasn’t all.

“Enhance, Fixate.”

With magical reinforcement triggered by incantation and layered casting, three overlapping shields materialized precisely where the Apostle’s fist was headed.

However—

Crack—!

The shields shattered like glass.

As if they were nothing—utterly meaningless and laughable.

Yet, in that brief moment, Alon had managed to pull Seolrang out of the Apostle’s range.

“Oh? A mage?”

The Apostle, Seolgak, halted in place, intrigued, showing no intention of pursuing further.

Alon looked down at Seolrang.

Her gaze was growing dim.

It wasn’t the confused, panic-stricken look she’d shown while fighting earlier.

No—this was something worse.

Something dying.

And in that moment—

“You’ve grown quite strong, little sister. I’m impressed. Who would’ve thought the weakest of our tribe could become this powerful?”

Seolgak spoke with the same smile as before.

Seolrang didn’t respond.

She simply stared at her brother with trembling eyes, her expression far grimmer than before.

Alon realized something was deeply wrong.

The Apostle’s strength?

That was certainly a problem.

But the real issue was—Seolrang herself.

She valued family above all else.

Perhaps even more than her own well-being.

She possessed an overwhelming sense of belonging to the category of blood and kin.

To her, family was: Sacred. Non-negotiable. Something to be protected at all costs.

And now, before her stood the only blood relative she thought long dead— The very person who had just destroyed everything she held dear.

Before she could even react.

Utterly and completely.

Alon glanced around the wreckage.

All he saw were corpses.

The fallen members of the Golden Mane Tribe— Seolrang’s attempt to build a new family.

‘This isn’t good.’

His gaze shifted back to Seolgak.

The Apostle of Pride, her brother, had been watching everything with ease, making no move to engage since Seolrang’s initial attack.

‘No,’

He wasn’t just watching.

He was ‘waiting’.

Waiting for Seolrang’s mind to break.

Alon frowned deeply.

‘What should I do?’

He had no idea why Seolrang’s brother had become like this.

But one thing was clear—

‘This has to stop.’

Still, there were two reasons Alon hesitated to act rashly:

He hadn’t fully grasped Seolgak’s abilities yet,

And—

He wasn’t ready.

Preparations he’d been making since Seolgak’s arrival were not complete.

But time wasn’t on his side.

He didn’t know how far Seolgak would go to provoke Seolrang—

Or how long Seolrang could endure it.

Ultimately, Seolrang was the priority.

Alon quietly observed her pallor.

It wasn’t just about her turning into something corrupted— She was deteriorating fast.

Without delay, Alon began casting a spell.

“Now, we can’t have that.”

“!”

Boom!

In the blink of an eye, black lightning—moving faster than thought—struck him down.

“Master!”

Seolrang tried to retaliate with a punch toward Seolgak—

But—

“Urgh—!”

Her fist never reached him.

She struggled desperately to break free from Seolgak’s grip.

But—

“Sister, stop wasting your energy. No matter how hard you try, you can’t escape my grasp. And don’t worry—your mage isn’t dead.”

Seolgak’s smile didn’t fade, his tone almost amused.

“Still, it’s fascinating. The sister I remember would’ve been sobbing by now. Hmm. Maybe age has made you more dignified.”

He chuckled.

“Not that it’s an improvement.”

“…Did you ally with them?”

Seolrang’s darkened expression broke the brief silence.

Seolgak’s grin widened.

“Ally? With who?”

“With those ‘black things’ that destroyed our village!”

“And why would you think that?”

“Because I can ‘smell’ that bastard’s stench all over you!”

Seolgak glanced down at himself.

“Oh? Ahh…”

He let out an exaggerated sound of realization, then chuckled softly.

“Right. I forgot—I still have the curse from back then.”

“Curse…?”

“Yeah. Thanks for the reminder, little sister.

Now I don’t have to bother doing this the hard way.”

Seolgak’s grin turned mischievous, but his eyes gleamed with malice.

Then, with a flick, black lightning shot toward Seolrang’s head.

“Gah!”

Pain flared, sharp and sudden.

“Sister, let me tell you something interesting.”

He stared into her eyes.

“The one who slaughtered our people wasn’t ‘him’—”

Before Seolgak could finish—

BOOM!

Seolrang saw it.

Seolgak was blasted away, his body slamming into the ruins.

She felt a pair of hands gently covering her ears.

“Don’t listen.”

A familiar voice.

“Don’t listen, Seolrang.”

A very familiar voice.

Seolrang looked up.

There he was.

Not with the usual indifferent face.

But with an expression filled with nothing but concern—

Alon.

Her eyes widened in shock.

***

Alon, having blasted Seolgak away, frowned slightly.

At the moment of impact, he had minimized the damage by using shields and wind magic in tandem, creating a reactive defense.

Meanwhile, he had been quietly casting another spell without Seolgak noticing.

Normally, this would have been impossible, but thanks to one of the new sigils he had developed in his recent research, it was achievable.

This sigil reduced the power of his magic but concealed its presence from others.

Thus, Alon successfully cast a hidden spell to knock Seolgak back.

However—

“Wow, that’s fascinating. I didn’t sense any magic at all. How did you manage that?”

He failed to injure him.

“And what’s the point of covering her ears like that? She’s already ‘remembered’ everything.”

With Seolgak’s words, Alon sighed softly.

While secretly casting his spell, he had no trouble piecing together what Seolgak was trying to reveal.

He understood just how much psychological damage Seolrang would suffer if the truth Seolgak had prepared reached her.

There was only one thing Seolgak wanted to tell her.

“Well? Do you remember now, little sister? The fact that it was ‘your brother’ who killed the villagers and our family…!”

A sneering grin devoid of any guilt.

The words were exactly what Alon had expected—down to the very phrasing.

Clench—

Alon pressed his hands more firmly against Seolrang’s ears.

He knew she had already heard the truth.

No matter how tightly he covered her ears, the words had reached her.

He had seen Seolgak fire black lightning at Seolrang just before, lifting the magical seal on her memories—something even Alon hadn’t fully sensed.

Even so, he didn’t remove his hands from her ears.

It was pointless.

But even knowing it was meaningless, his hands wouldn’t move.

…Because Alon understood just how much the concept of ‘family’ meant to her.

“I’ll tell you something fun, Seolrang. Killing your own kind is quite thrilling. Watching those weaklings, rotten with peace, cry and beg for their lives—it’s euphoric.”

“Do you remember Paun from next door? That mischievous little brat you used to play with? He sobbed, begging for his life. I ripped him apart, holding his head and legs.”

“And Yuseon from the blacksmith’s—remember him? Your best friend, who adored his parents. I personally killed his parents right in front of him and gouged out his eyes before he died.”

Seolgak’s words were relentless, like blades, meant to drive Seolrang’s mind to the brink.

Cruel, unavoidable truths.

“How does it feel, little sister? To finally see the truth you’ve been blind to all this time?”

When Seolgak finally finished his tale, Seolrang, who had kept her head bowed until now—

Slowly lifted her gaze.

And—

Both Alon and Seolgak’s faces went blank.

As if time had stopped.

Facing them was Seolrang.

Her expression—

“So what?”

Was incredibly calm.

***

‘What… is this?’

Seolgak couldn’t understand.

No, he ‘refused’ to understand.

Seolrang’s reaction was completely outside of his expectations.

He stared at her, standing up casually after brushing aside Marquis Palatio’s hand.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.

She was supposed to lose her mind, consumed by hatred, directing all her rage at him.

Eventually, she was meant to kill the mage she cherished and awaken as the ‘Sin of Pride.’

Keeping her alive had been part of his plan.

The memory seal he’d placed on her—also part of that arrangement.

Unable to comprehend, Seolgak paused briefly, then sneered.

“…You don’t have to pretend anymore. You couldn’t hide your emotions earlier—do you think there’s any point in doing it now, little sister?”

He deliberately tried to provoke her.

But Seolrang tilted her head slightly, as if confused.

“What are you talking about? I’ve never hidden my emotions.”

“…What?”

“Why would I need to hide my feelings?”

She asked sincerely, as if she genuinely didn’t understand.

“…Just a moment ago, your eyes were full of confusion…”

Trying to rile her up again, Seolgak trailed off.

Seolrang shrugged casually.

“Of course I was. I couldn’t protect my master.”

“What?”

“My brother, you’re strong. I realized that after facing you. That’s why I was scared—I was in a situation where I couldn’t protect my master.”

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

She tilted her head again.

“What else should’ve shaken me?”

“What?”

“Did you really expect me to be emotionally wrecked by your little game?”

Seolgak frowned.

“…You’ve grown cynical, little sister.”

“Not at all, brother. I still love my family. Paun, Yuseon, and everyone you mentioned—they’re all precious memories to me. But if I let emotions like that sway me—”

Sway—

“I wouldn’t be able to protect the one person I have left.”

“And, brother, I think you’re mistaken about  something.”

Instead of a faint smile—

Her eyes grew cold.

“I’m already angry.”

Her gaze sharpened.

“Because you tried to kill my master.”

Silence settled between them.

Then—

“Ha… Hahaha!”

Seolgak burst into laughter, his face contorted with disbelief.

“Alright! So, you’ve gotten pretty clever over the past ten years, huh? I admit it, little sister—I underestimated you. I didn’t think you’d grow this much! But still—”

Crackle—!

“You’re not stronger than me.”

Black lightning shot toward Seolrang.

Crack—!

His fist followed.

Seolrang moved.

But this time, she was faster—adapting to Seolgak’s speed.

A faint golden lightning began to form around her hands.

Seolgak’s grin twitched.

It was a phenomenon he’d never seen before—threatening and unfamiliar.

Yet, he didn’t lose his smile.

Though surprised, he assumed she still couldn’t control that power properly.

Seolgak thought to himself: ‘I’ll knock her down, then kill that mage right before her eyes.’

A wicked grin crept onto his face.

His future seemed certain— His broken sister, and using her body as the vessel to summon the one who held everything: ‘His Lord.’

However—

Clink!

Seolgak’s vision shattered.

“1.”

He stared ahead in disbelief.

A transparent wall stood in front of him, fracturing under his fist.

Mirrored distortions spread, twisting reality into countless geometric planes.

It was the mage’s doing.

The moment Seolgak realized it—

“Seolrang, stay calm. And remember—you’ve already reached the next stage. So—”

A quiet voice.

“Just believe in yourself.”

Came from the mage.

“And never forget—”

“Embrace the lightning.”

In the next instant—

“Ah—”

Seolgak saw it.

“Mm-hmm!”

Seolrang, smiling brightly as if something had clicked.

Her body now infused with golden magic and glowing with radiant, golden eyes.

“Oh, I almost forgot to mention, brother—I don’t have to be afraid of you anymore.”

And Seolgak realized.

That power—

“Thanks to you, I gained it.”

A power that surpassed even the royal lineage, once thought lost to this world.

The divine ability known as—

“Thunder Deification.”

“Die.”

Seolrang’s fist struck down with blinding white lightning.

“Tsk….”

The female teacher, who had been walking past Whitney towards the ominous magic circle exuding a foreboding aura, clicked her tongue as her expression twisted.

“A mere rookie, and yet you dared to interfere with our plans once again.”

Muttering in a low voice, she bit her nails, her eyes gradually turning black once more.

‘I’ve spent years holding my breath, blending into the academy… and now, of all times?’

She was well aware that after the failed engagement operation at the recent Shadow Union meeting, nearly all the black mages involved had faced a gruesome fate, with only a rare few escaping punishment.

That was why she had been given the order to find a moderately talented child before the Young Talents Selection Tournament and prepare them as a substitute for the saintess in summoning the demon.

She had no choice but to ensure the success of this plan.

‘Damn it, white mages are always such a nuisance.’

However, the artifact she had prepared with the approval of the Tower Master and the sub-highest-tier monster, which had been forcefully readied for the plan’s success, had been effortlessly neutralized by Whitney.

Of course, now that he had lifted his power-sealing magic, she could still move the monster again.

But the problem was that the artifact, the core of the plan, had fallen into Whitney’s hands.

‘Should I launch a surprise attack and steal the artifact back…?’

That solution briefly crossed her mind, but she quickly shook her head, dismissing the thought.

‘No, that would be reckless.’

Pedro, the mastermind behind the engagement operation, had mentioned that Whitney possessed the ability to track movements even in absolute darkness, something that was supposed to be lethal to white mages.

Even if she managed to snatch the artifact back, she would need to infuse it with a massive amount of dark mana to reactivate it.

Considering that she had already infused a considerable amount of dark mana into Adele’s necklace under the guise of a security check, pulling this off while dealing with a white mage would be extremely difficult.

‘Thankfully, the dark mana emanating from the magic circle has concealed my identity. I should focus on erasing the evidence and wait for another opportunity.’

With that thought, she took a deep breath, making a rational decision as she stood before the magic circle.

‘There’s still time left. If I can just find another chance….’

Just as she was about to reach out to erase the runes inscribed within the magic circle, holding her breath—

“Are you trying to get rid of that?”

“…!?”

A playful whisper suddenly rang beside her, making her freeze in shock.

“Rather than erasing it, wouldn’t it be less suspicious to leave it as it is?”

Whitney, who had apparently left the maze earlier, had now returned alone, standing beside her with a sly grin.

Had he already put Adele somewhere else?

“W-What do you mean by that?”

“Hmm, well….”

Seeing him like that, she broke into a cold sweat but forced herself to feign ignorance and remain calm.

Whitney, in turn, seemed lost in thought for a moment.

“Could I borrow your ear for a second?”

“…At a time like this?”

“It’ll only take a moment.”

His unexpected request, paired with his half-lidded gaze, made her hesitate.

After some deliberation, she ultimately leaned in cautiously, ready to cast dark magic at a moment’s notice.

“…For the Moon’s Shadow.”

The moment he whispered in her ear, wearing a chillingly wicked expression—

“Th-That’s impossible.”

Her face went blank for a brief moment before she hastily stumbled backward, muttering in disbelief.

“T-That can’t be… If that’s true, then why…?”

“What do you mean?”

“…Why did you interfere with us?”

It was an understandable reaction.

The phrase Whitney had whispered was a secret code used among black mages to identify each other.

“You’ve ruined our plans twice already—there’s no way you’re a member of the Shadow Union….”

“Haha, if you shift your perspective just a little, it all makes sense.”

It was too much of a coincidence.

A non-black mage couldn’t possibly know that code.

Even if he had somehow learned it through other means, what were the chances of him whispering it at precisely this moment?

“…Have you never considered that everything happening recently might all be part of a grand plan?”

Despite her skepticism, Whitney’s composed response made her tense.

She narrowed her eyes and, lowering her voice, demanded proof.

“P-Prove it.”

“Proof?”

“Prove that you’re on our side.”

If Whitney truly was one of them, there were countless ways to prove it.

The black mages were a highly secretive group, wary of infiltrators, and had put great effort into creating foolproof identification methods.

“Hmm….”

“Ha, damn it. So it was just a deception after all.”

However, when Whitney remained silent, merely swallowing hard, her expression immediately turned cold, and she hastily began to summon dark mana into both hands.

“I don’t know where you learned that code, but now that it’s come to this, I can’t let you leave.”

Then, as her gaze shifted to the headless knight, who had been standing motionless with his sword raised per her command—

“Being of the Abyss and Darkness, fulfill your duty to your contractor.”

She gave the order with a sinister smile.

“…..”

“Huh…?”

Yet, the headless knight remained motionless, maintaining complete silence.

“W-What’s going on…?”

Startled, she tried to regain her composure and was just about to issue another command when—

“B-Being of the Abyss and…!”

“…Being of the Abyss and Darkness.”

Whitney, who had been quietly observing, suddenly repeated her command in a soft, measured tone.

“Fulfill your duty to me.”

The moment he finished speaking—

Clank…

The headless knight slowly sheathed his sword at his waist, then kneeled before Whitney, bowing his head.

“Is there any clearer proof than this?”

“…Is this real?”

Blinking in disbelief, the female teacher rubbed her eyes, then, hearing Whitney’s calm voice beside her, she hesitantly asked,

“Are you really on our side…?”

Whitney responded with his signature eye-smile and gave a quiet nod.

‘Wait… this actually worked?’

In truth, he was just as baffled as she was.

*****

To be honest, I have absolutely no idea what’s happening right now.

‘In the original story, I died in the Embergreen Ducal estate’s garden before the game even started, so how would I know?’

I could understand lower-tier monsters obeying me, but for even that high-tier headless knight to follow my command?

If this got out, the Holy Order might light a fire under my ass and try to kill me.

‘Once this is over, I really need to figure out what’s going on with my abilities.’

But right now, the priority was ending this damned situation.

“What’s your real identity, aside from your cover?”

“I-I’m Rebecca, a member of the Shadow Union’s Eastern Branch.”

As she sat there, dazed, I gave her a casual smile and threw out the question.

Snapping back to reality, she stammered as she introduced herself.

“I-I’m currently on an infiltration mission in the academy, so I haven’t had much direct contact with the Union….”

“Are you the only infiltrator here?”

“…There are a few others, but they’re just servants under my command.”

With her identity and the black mages’ movements inside the academy so easily revealed, I decided to push my advantage.

“Alright, listen carefully, Rebecca.”

If I could plant a double agent among the black mages, everything would become much easier moving forward.

“Approaching Lady Meredia and becoming her fiancé.”

“…?”

“Anticipating the engagement operation’s failure and secretly spiriting away the saintess. Using that situation to deceive the emperor and rise as the empire’s hero for defeating the black mages.”

As I recounted the events leading up to now, Rebecca, the black mage, stared at me in confusion.

“And getting appointed as a judge for the Young Talents Selection Tournament—everything up to this point.”

“!”

“It’s all just a part of my grand plan.”

At my words, her pupils dilated in shock.

“Then… could it be…?”

A few moments later, she finally said what I had been waiting for.

“You are… our great—”

“Shh.”

I swiftly placed a finger against her lips to silence her, then flicked my other hand’s fingers with a low whisper.

“You should have realized it the moment I controlled the monsters, shouldn’t you?”

Right on cue, the low-tier monsters lurking nearby began writhing toward me.

“Ah…”

Rebecca, staring blankly at the convincingly theatrical display, flinched as the grotesque creatures rubbed against my legs.

Then, she suddenly bowed her head to the ground and shouted,

“I-I greet the Great Shadow!”

It seemed my plan to make them mistake me for their leader had worked.

“Th-Then what about the order I received to find a replacement for the saintess…?”

“Ahaha… That must have been a decision made independently by the executives.”

With that, everything else would fall into place.

Once a person falls for a misconception, it’s not easy to break free from it.

“I’ll personally bring the saintess to the selection tournament, so there’s no need for substitutes.”

“I-I see?”

“But Rebecca, do you know why I’m telling you such confidential information?”

With just a little seasoning, misconceptions can expand rapidly.

“I’m planning to replace the soon-to-be-purged executives and give you an important position.”

“A-Ah…”

“It’s about time we prioritized field operatives like you over those who sit safely in their hideouts, only engaging in empty discussions.”

As expected, her body trembled, and she muttered in a teary voice,

“I… I thought I would just rot away in the academy and be discarded….”

It was oddly amusing that, whether in my past life or this one, even black mages suffered the same workplace frustrations.

“I will…! I will devote my life in loyalty!”

“Haha, good.”

“If you take off your shoes right now, I will seal the oath with a kiss….”

“No, there’s no need to go that far.”

I hastily pulled her away as she crawled toward my feet, attempting a black mage-style oath.

Then, crouching down in front of her, I whispered in a low voice.

“I have a request for you.”

“W-Whatever it is, just command me! I will accomplish it without fail!”

Now that I had successfully secured a pawn within the black mages, it was time to turn their own tactics against them.

“Right now, I need you to attack me with dark magic.”

“…What?”

For example, I planned to spread false information that Whitney had been critically wounded inside the maze and could not serve as a judge in the Young Talents Selection Tournament.

“It would be best if the injuries looked serious.”

“……?”

“Ah, but make sure it’s non-fatal. I need to manipulate the situation.”

“…Ah! I see what you’re doing!”

Huh. Why does this feel like I’ve truly become some kind of mastermind?

*****

Some time later, at the entrance of the examination hall outside the maze—

“Lady Meredia, you cannot go in.”

“…Step aside.”

Unlike the now somewhat settled situation inside, the atmosphere outside was on the verge of exploding.

“No matter who you are, my lady, I cannot allow it.”

“Are you not hearing me?”

“I hear you perfectly well. That is precisely why I’m stopping you.”

Meredia, the chairwoman of the academy’s board and the dean, who had rushed over with the academy’s magic faculty upon hearing the situation, were at a standstill.

“You intend to forcibly tear down the barrier? The maze has essentially transformed into a dungeon. If you interfere recklessly, the students inside could be put at risk.”

“You think I don’t know that?”

After having her demands dismissed for the third time, Lady Meredia glared at the dean, her expression full of killing intent.

“How amusing. You people claim to care so much about student safety, and yet you let this disaster happen.”

“…I have no excuse for that. And, of course, I will take full responsibility.”

However, the dean had his own reasons for blocking her path.

“The magic faculty is working together to safely dismantle the barrier. Just a little more time, and—”

“Didn’t you say the same thing when I first arrived?”

“…Please, my lady. You understand the potential side effects of forcibly destroying a dungeon barrier.”

As the dean anxiously stroked his beard, Meredia’s expression twisted into something even more terrifying.

“If it were an ordinary magic circle, I wouldn’t even be arguing. But no one has ever documented what happens when an overloaded dark magic-infused circle collapses….”

“My fiancé is a white mage. What exactly are you so worried about?”

At her sharp remark, the dean fell silent for a moment before speaking in a trembling voice.

“…Isn’t it precisely because of that fiancé that you are more concerned than you would be for the students?”

Meredia, who had been glaring at him in silence, clenched her trembling right hand with her other, steadying herself.

“Then let me ask you in return.”

“Go ahead.”

“Give me one reason why I shouldn’t be more worried about my fiancé than students I’ve never even met.”

Had there been gossipers around, they might have interpreted her words as a headline-worthy romantic declaration.

But with the murderous aura radiating from her and the crimson glow intensifying in her gemstone eyes, no one dared entertain such frivolous thoughts.

“It seems we have reached an impasse.”

“I agree. So, this is my final warning.”

Having failed to negotiate with the dean, Lady Meredia began issuing her ultimatum.

“If you do not move aside this instant, I will—”

“…D-Dean! Lady Meredia!”

Suddenly, a panicked assistant ran up behind them, interrupting her declaration just in time.

“The maze is collapsing!”

The moment those words were spoken, Meredia immediately stopped paying attention to the dean and rushed toward the examination hall.

“……Ah.”

And then, a weak gasp escaped her lips.

Kugugugugu—!

Just as the assistant had said, the maze before her was crumbling helplessly.

Clatter…

After a long period of collapse, the maze had turned into a wasteland.

A small stone, dislodged by the destruction, rolled to a stop at her feet.

“……”

Meredia stood there, frozen, her complexion gradually turning pale.

“Well, I must say, seeing that damn maze finally collapse is oddly satisfying.”

At that moment, a familiar voice—brazen and unfazed—spoke beside her.

“It’s truly a pleasure to see you again, my lady.”

Whitney, holding a female student in a princess carry, stood beside her, supported by the female teacher, flashing his signature sly grin.

“You really have a talent for irritating people.”

“Haha….”

“You couldn’t even handle such a minor incident properly, and yet you expect to serve as a judge—”

Meredia, who had been glaring icily at the girl clinging to Whitney’s waist, began her usual cold tirade.

But then—

“…What is that?”

She suddenly noticed the dark, ominously stained wound on his side, where his torn clothes revealed his injured skin.

Her eyes widened, and her expression changed instantly.

“Oh, this….”

Whitney tried to explain with a pale smile, but before he could finish—

“There was a lot… that happened inside….”

“……!”

“…Ugh.”

His balance faltered, and he collapsed.

Meredia instinctively reached out and caught him, cradling him against her.

“…Call the medic.”

Her eyes trembled as she looked down at him.

Then, pressing her still-quivering right hand against his face, she raised her voice urgently.

“Summon the medic, now!”

Something happened all of a sudden.

Alon couldn’t understand the current situation.

His brow furrowed involuntarily.

He saw a Scorpion breaking through the wall and entering inside.

It was darker than he remembered, but it was definitely a Scorpion.

A monster possessing the artifact of pride.

‘Why?’

As far as Alon knew, the Scorpion should have been hibernating in its cave until the protagonist went to deal with it.

In other words, it shouldn’t be wandering around like this.

Alon couldn’t understand the situation at all.

“Bro…ther?”

He turned around momentarily at the sound of Seolrang’s voice nearby.

Seolrang, who had been holding a black cat until a moment ago, was now looking at the Scorpion with trembling eyes, unbelievably.

Following her gaze, Alon turned his head,

‘Ah-‘

Only then did he realize there was a Beastman on top of the Scorpion.

A Beastman with gray-white hair.

The moment he recognized that presence.

“1”

The man looked at Alon and grinned, then disappeared leaving a trail of black lightning.

“Acceleration.”

Instinctively, Alon formed a seal and moved backward.

An instinctive move, without time to think.

And that saved Alon.

Boom-!!

The place where Alon had been standing was struck by black lightning, just a hair’s breadth away,

“Wow, that was quick? Honestly, I didn’t think you’d react. Too bad.”

The ground was completely shattered.

Through the rising dust, the man walked out with a thick smile on his lips.

With a leisurely demeanor, Alon quickly racked his brain.

However, no matter how hard he tried, Alon couldn’t recall the identity of the Beastman in front of him.

No, it wasn’t that he couldn’t remember.

‘…Is this the same situation as Duke Komalon?’

He was a character who did not appear in the original story. Realizing this, Alon looked tense.

“Who are you?”

The lips of the Beastman, emerging from the dust, slowly parted.

“Me? Well, how shall I introduce myself? The brother of the fool standing behind you? Or perhaps— an apostle serving the Great Pride?”

“An apostle?”

Alon’s mind became cluttered.

He had only heard a few pieces of information, but he had already started deducing the situation from those two words.

However,

“Seolgak, bro…ther?”

As Seolrang muttered again, Alon had no choice but to look at her.

The corners of Seolrang’s eyes trembled slightly as she saw the apostle’s face.

However,

Unlike Seolrang, the man referred to as Seolgak maintained a relaxed expression.

“Yeah, Seolrang. This is your brother.”

“How, how is this possible?”

She questioned, unbelievingly, as if she were swimming through a dream.

But Seolrang’s reaction didn’t seem to matter to him, as he didn’t remove the smile from his lips.

“What are you curious about, little sister? Wondering why I’m still alive? Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like we’re in a situation to enjoy ourselves. I have things I need to do.”

Instead, he looked at Alon,

“1”

and reappeared in front of him.

Seolgak, without hesitation, reached for Alon’s heart with his fist.

Alon couldn’t even react quickly enough,

But the fist did not pierce through Alon’s heart.

“What are you doing now, brother?”

Because Seolrang had blocked it.

“Bingo.”

Seolgak’s smile deepened.

“What are you doing?”

“What does it look like? I’m doing what needs to be done.”

“What task?”

Seolrang, who didn’t understand, asked again as Seolgak tapped her head lightly with his other hand.

“Yes, a task indeed. A task that must be done to rebirth my sister as ‘a great being.'”

Seolrang’s face still held unresolved questions.

Sullak sighed as if regretfully,

“Really— you’ve always been a high-maintenance sister. I prepared everything in advance before, but seeing that you’re still not broken and holding up well…”

“What are you talking about?”

Seolrang’s voice wavered, filled with confusion.

But no matter what emotions Seolrang showed,

“Don’t try to understand it unnecessarily, sister. From now on, I will make you into a being that suits you.”

Sullak grinned, and

“!”

At that moment, Alon recalled a conversation he had with the Golden Dragon Lainisius.

“Not at all. The bodies they descend into are initially created by the Apostles.”

“…Apostles?

“Yes, they often mentally break down those with high talent to make it easier for them to descend.”

It was a brief conversation.

Recalling that conversation didn’t mean Alon understood everything.

He still had no information about the ‘Apostle of Pride’ in front of him, nor about Seolrang’s past.

He only knew that her village had been burned down.

To make a proper causal connection, the information he had was woefully insufficient.

However, if there was one thing he could clearly predict,

“Let’s set aside the most precious thing for later and first tidy up the patchwork my sister has so diligently built.”

-That was about what was to come.

Soon.

Crack-!

Black lightning flashed, and the guild building where the Golden Mane tribe gathered began to burst instantly.

***

At that moment.

There was chaos in the fortress of the Colony.

“What in the world!”

Karsem’s eyes widened.

A massive monster had already crushed the entire wall and was now invading the inner city, wreaking havoc in the capital.

Fear, horror, and helplessness dominated him.

Even though he had learned magic for a little over half a year and reached the first rank, there was nothing he could do in this situation.

Therefore, as Karsem watched the monster grow larger in his field of view,

“Prince! You must move!”

He turned his body after a belated shout from a knight.

He wanted to stand against the monster too, but he already knew.

It would be a certain death to confront it now, and rashly doing so would only lead to the deaths of the knights following him.

Unlike before, Karsem was fully aware of the responsibilities that came with his position as a prince, not just the power.

Thinking he needed to make a rational decision, he turned.

“We must evacuate until the Barbarians arrive!”

He joined the knights, but

At that moment.

“Uh-!”

He turned towards the source of the moan.

It was a young maid.

The girl had apparently sprained her ankle and was lying on the ground, sobbing.

The child looked up fearfully at the Scorpion that had already entered the inner fortress and reached the garden.

Seeing this, Karsem’s steps slowed.

He knew even then.

Even if he went now, the chances of saving the maid were slim.

It was foolish to try to save her.

Yet Karsem was conflicted.

He knew he was not a hero.

He knew he didn’t even have the strength to be a hero.

Yet still, Karsem’s mind replayed that scene.

Marquis Palatio and Seolrang, who had rescued Filian from death without a second thought.

His actions in saving the Merkiliane domain without any consideration for his own safety.

What about himself?

He was a pig on its legs; why had he worked so hard over the past half-year?

Karsem had run all this way because he wanted to be like that.

“Prince!”

“Run forward!”

As he shouted, Karsem pulled out the wand from his pocket and summoned the wind. Quite adept at magic for someone who hadn’t been studying it for even half a year, he quickly grasped the young maid and exclaimed,

“Whoosh!”

He rolled to the side just in time.

Boom!

Along with it, the Scorpion’s massive pincer struck with perfect timing.

Squeak!

As the pincer embedded into the now blackening, oxidized ground, Karsem sprang to his feet and ran madly towards a decorative well connected to the underground waterways.

“If I can get down to the sewer, it won’t be able to follow…!”

He once again chanted a spell to freeze the ground.

A slick path of ice formed instantly between the well and Karsem. He slid across it, dodging another monstrous attack, and was about to jump into the waterway when,

“Ah.”

He wore a look of despair.

The entrance to the well he had struggled to reach had collapsed due to the recent shock, now completely blocked.

Above him, the shadow of the monster loomed.

Karsem saw the monster aiming its pincer at him once more, and at that gritted moment,

“You’ve held up well.”

“…What?”

Karsem found,

Before him, a girl with unfamiliar eyes on her back.

And then,

Dozens of golden rods repelling the Scorpion’s pincer.

-!!!!

The Scorpion, frustrated by its thwarted attempts, roared madly, swinging its pincers.

The merciless attack started breaking the summoned golden rods, but,

“Hmm— It would be troublesome if the master were to rest during such times,”

Rine remained unfazed.

If it had been just a day earlier, she couldn’t have remained so composed in this situation.

Since she had fully awakened ‘the Eye of the Tracker’ only recently, her abilities wouldn’t have been enough to stop the Scorpion.

Today, the reason Rine could stay calm was simple.

Yesterday, as Alon left for the ruins,

Rine had found a hidden site somewhere in the desert through the first clue given by ‘the Eye of the Tracker’ immediately after its awakening, revealing secrets not even present in the library.

The information she gleaned from the ruins was scant;

Indeed, only two things: ‘the Eye of the Tracker’ is ‘the key,’ and a way to mobilize ‘the Eye’ to a limited extent.

But even that was enough.

She might not know exactly how to use ‘the Eye of the Tracker,’ but she knew the entities it could summon.

Therefore,

“Well, I needed to test a newly discovered fact anyway, so this works out.”

With a relaxed expression,

-“Gather.”

She uttered the command, and

With it,

Whooosh~!

A halo formed from the giant eye behind Rine.

Soon, many golden rods burst forth, forming some kind of shape around her.

The first thing that formed was a skeleton.

Over it, another layer of golden rods twisted around, encasing the skeleton.

And then, numerous rods chaotically intertwined above it, taking shape.

Thus,

What eventually emerged was a door so large it could easily surpass the height of the city walls.

And then,

Grooooaaaaarrrr!!!!

“The magic-tech weapon of the Ilaneph Empire, ‘Pluto.'”

With a sound that shook heaven and earth, the circular door opened.

Emerging from within was something that could even overwhelm the Scorpion,

“…Hand?”

Even Karsem, filled with despair, dumbfoundedly looked up at the mechanically crafted hand.

Made up of numerous parts and golden rods, it was a gigantic mechanical hand that seemed capable of grasping the sky.

Its mere presence made the world feel alien, a hand vast enough to obscure the sun, descended into the airspace of the fortress.

“Limited deployment,”

Rine commanded.

“Divine Punishment.”

The imposing hand of a god shot down towards the earth.

To punish the abomination that shouldn’t exist in this world.

Boommmmm!!!

Round 286

Prev | TOC | Next

After several failed attempts, the duel between Kyler and his daughter finally ended.

“Quest complete!”

At the same time, Emily’s quest was completed.

Now, what kind of reward would be given this time?

Poof!

A quest reward appeared before her eyes.

It was an unidentified object surrounded by a halo of light.

As the light gradually faded, the object was revealed.

“Huh? What is that?”

The revealed object was a square-shaped box.

No, upon closer inspection, it wasn’t a box but a metal ingot.

A metal ingot suddenly appeared.

Holding the ingot with a puzzled expression, Emily looked at us.

“What do I do with this?”

“Uh… hmm…”

Kyler, who was standing right in front of her, decided to check it first.

“It’s an item.”

“An item!”

A metal ingot as an item?

What a bizarre thing.

Even the minerals we mine from our mines don’t get item labels, but this one did—clearly, a special reward.

‘Well, considering how difficult that quest was, it couldn’t be an ordinary item.’

After all, it involved five duels against individuals with at least level-9 skills.

And those five duels couldn’t be against the same person; they had to be fought against five different opponents, making it an insanely difficult quest.

While the Relics of the Seven Deadly Sins quest was notorious for its cruelty, this duel quest wasn’t something just anyone could complete either.

Of course, Emily had a free pass.

Thanks to her elite connections, she breezed through every quest at lightning speed.

‘All thanks to me, of course.’

As I was silently congratulating myself, everyone gathered around to check out Emily’s reward.

“What’s this used for?”

-Why not craft a cool weapon for Emily?

-It looks pretty.

Hmm, now I’m curious about the item’s stats.

I also approached Kyler to check the information on the ingot.

[Heavenly Metal – Diligence]

[A metal imbued with the energy of Diligence, one of the Seven Virtues.]

[It is composed of a material that cannot exist in the human world.]

“Wow.”

Judging by the description alone, it seemed like a legendary-grade item.

An object made of a material that couldn’t exist in the human realm!

The “human world” must mean the physical world, right?

Anyway!

It was a truly impressive-looking metal ingot.

“Hmm, so the Seven Virtues exist too, huh?”

The name suggested a counterpart to the Seven Deadly Sins.

Just like the quest to retrieve the Relics of the Seven Deadly Sins, it seemed that the hero was aligned with the opposing side.

“A new quest has appeared.”

“What is it?”

“Prepare the Hero for the Expedition! Forge a sword using the Metal of Diligence!”

Whoa.

Another high-difficulty quest appeared.

No matter how you looked at it, handling this metal didn’t seem easy.

It probably required someone with exceptional skills.

‘Maybe I should entrust it to a blacksmith with awakened abilities or hand it over to the research lab…’

As I was lost in thought, Kyler spoke up.

“This is going to be tough.”

“Huh? Wouldn’t it work if we entrusted it to someone?”

“From what I’ve analyzed with my abilities, I’m honestly doubtful if anyone can handle this.”

Kyler examined the ingot from every angle, his expression skeptical.

If Kyler was this doubtful, it was likely much harder than I expected.

Besides, if it were Kyler, he’d definitely know at least one outstanding blacksmith with awakened abilities.

‘And yet, he says it’s difficult.’

Although we had somehow managed to clear Emily’s absurd quests up until now, this time, even I might be out of options.

-Do you need a blacksmith, my lord?

Mammon, who had been watching from the side, suddenly asked.

“Oh, you heard it. We need to forge this metal ingot into a sword.”

-Hmm… In that case…

Mammon began to ponder.

Could he possibly have a solution?

Before long, Mammon started whispering with Ara and Ras, who were cheerfully chatting with Emily.

But why leave Ashu out?

For the record, after sparring with Emily, Ashu couldn’t control her speed and was running around excitedly.

In fact, she was moving so fast that I could barely keep track of her, and I wasn’t even sure if she was actually running around.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong!”

“Yeah? Are you done talking?”

“Yes! So, we need to make a sword for Emily, right?”

I nodded in response to Ara’s question.

Helping Emily complete her quests was a kind of vicarious satisfaction for me.

It wasn’t something I had to do, but it felt like something I really wanted to accomplish.

Ara grinned triumphantly and shouted, “I know someone who can handle that metal!”

“…Don’t tell me, it’s one of the Seven Deadly Sins?”

“Gasp! How did you know? Kyu-seong, do you even have mind-reading powers?”

Where on earth did she learn a word like “mind-reading”?

Not just Ara—Mammon and Ras were also staring at me in shock.

-As expected of the Great Lord, truly fearsome.

-Please, do not read my mind, my lord!

I scratched my head awkwardly and tried to calm them down.

It was just a guess, really.

Whenever something like this came up, they always introduced another of their friends.

“So, this time it’s a blacksmith friend?”

“Yes! He’s the one who sleeps all day long!”

“Sleep all day?”

That narrowed it down instantly.

Ah, sloth—it had to be Sloth.

-His personality is irritable, and he’s extremely lazy.

-If you entrust him with something, it’ll take forever, but I can vouch for the quality of his work.

I was curious about what kind of being they were.

From the way they described him, he sounded like a blacksmith, but it was odd that he was lazy.

Shouldn’t blacksmiths be diligent?

Just as I was pondering, Kyler cautiously spoke up.

“Are you planning to meet the Seven Deadly Sins again?”

“Oh, they mentioned someone who could handle this ingot.”

“You’re probably the only one who treats the Seven Deadly Sins without prejudice, Kyu-seong.”

Really?

To me, they all just seemed like cute kids.

“Hmm, it might be related to the dungeon of the Seven Deadly Sins I mentioned earlier.”

“Oh! You’re right. Have you seen it before?”

“Actually, I fought some regular monsters at the dungeon’s entrance and confirmed they were at least level 9. I just assumed it might be one of the Seven Deadly Sins.”

“Ah, I see.”

That was a bit disappointing.

I hoped the dungeon Kyler had found was Sloth’s dungeon.

“But there was one distinctive feature.”

“What was it?”

“All the monsters were… well, sluggish. If you ran away, they didn’t bother to chase you.”

“It’s Sloth!”

Of course, it might not be, but I wanted to believe it was.

For now, I asked the kids what Sloth looked like.

-It’s a cat.

“A cat?”

-Yes, if Ras is a dog, then that one is a cat.

-How dare you call me a dog!

Oh…

Ohhh!

“A cat, huh?”

A cat, something I didn’t have yet.

Finally, I get to adopt a cat!

Now it made sense why they were described as irritable and lazy.

If it’s a cat, I can totally understand that!

“His name is Bell!”

“That’s a cute name.”

“He’s cute too. Always lounging around, which makes him even cuter!”

A lazy cat, huh?

I wanted to recruit him immediately.

I should visit the dungeon Kyler found sometime soon.

“Whenever you’re ready, I’ll guide you to the dungeon.”

“Yes, please do.”

Right now wasn’t the best time to leave, though.

In a day or two, winter would end.

I needed to dismantle the greenhouse and start planting the seeds I had prepared.

‘The seeds from America, and the ones for the golden crops I plan to grow.’

Even though helping Emily complete her quests was satisfying, I couldn’t neglect my main duty.

And my main duty was farming.

Of course, the slimes took care of the farming themselves, but I had to oversee it.

“Before we head to the dungeon, let’s choose a place for Emily to live and build her house. It might take some time.”

“Ah! You’re right. Since we don’t know how long the dungeon expedition will take, it’s better to finish building the house first.”

A cat, a cat…

Just thinking about the cat made me excited.

Though she didn’t say anything, Seon-ah, who had been listening quietly, was also wide-eyed with anticipation at the mention of a cat.

“Alright, everyone, dismissed!”

Thus, the session for Emily’s quest ended, and everyone went off to do their own thing.

Meanwhile, I went outside to check if there were any new messages.

“Huh? It’s from Hanul.”

I had received several greetings from various people.

Among them was a message from Hanul.

“What?!”

The message from Hanul contained surprising news.

“They found a cure for dementia?”

I remembered the Meluca fruit I gave Young-seong because he wanted to study it.

It stood out in my memory because of its peculiar effects and toxicity.

But to think that fruit could cure dementia?

I never expected that.

“That’s amazing. Does that mean Hanul’s mother can be cured too?”

Soybean paste stew was still a staple food for our family.

After all, for Koreans, hearty stew and rice are essentials!

Hanul’s mother was the one who had inspired us to start making soybean paste stew.

Hmm, I should visit her sometime with Ara to pay my respects.

Anyway, I received a message thanking me and asking if it would be okay for Hanul and Young-seong to come visit when they had time.

‘Of course!’

However, Kyler would likely need to stay hidden around the dungeon outskirts for a while.

It was still too soon to reveal his presence.

In any case, they were only planning to stay for a day or two, so it wouldn’t be for too long.

Besides, Kyler had volunteered to explore the dungeon, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to let him handle that in the meantime.

– Come visit anytime!

As soon as I sent the message, my phone rang.

– Hey, Kyu-seong! My brother!

“Hello, hyung. Congratulations!”

– Haha! It’s all thanks to you, brother!

“Oh, come on. I didn’t do much. It’s all because of Young-seong hyung’s hard work and research.”

– You sound just like that punk Choi Young-seong! Hahaha!

Hearing Hanul hyung’s excited voice made me feel happy for no reason.

We loosely agreed on a visit about a week later and ended the call.

A week was just about right—it would be after the busiest period had passed, so it wasn’t bad timing.

‘I should also share some of those golden strawberries.’

We still had plenty of the golden strawberries we harvested earlier.

After our family had eaten our fill, we held back to save some for those who hadn’t had the chance to try them.

I had planned to give five strawberries each to CEO Baek Tae-seop of Iron Blood and the guild master of the Terror Guild, so I figured I might as well ask the guild staff handling the next delivery to take care of it for me.

This time, we were planning a large-scale delivery of golden strawberries to Ara Hongryeon as well.

The price?

I hadn’t thought too deeply about it.

I didn’t want to set it too high, so I was thinking of roughly 100 million per strawberry.

‘Even at that price, people will say it’s cheap.’

After all, it was a crop that couldn’t be bought with money alone, so even 100 million was a bargain.

It wasn’t just a tasty fruit—it was an item with immense value.

Still, with my bank account overflowing with hundreds of billions of won, I didn’t have any strong desire for more money.

Now, I genuinely just wanted the people around me to be happy.

‘Come to think of it, Si-young recently established a charity foundation. I should make a donation too.’

Not only to Dasom Orphanage but also to orphanages across the country—I should make contributions everywhere.

After living through life in the dungeon, monetary wealth didn’t mean much to me anymore.

An incredible home, incredible meals, and a loving family gathered together in happiness—what more could I ask for?

Plus, the sense of accomplishment I got from farming and managing the dungeon was indescribable.

“Ugh! Ah! I can’t wait for Jae-seong’s restaurant to be finished soon.”

Who knows what fun things will happen when that’s ready?

Filled with anticipation, I headed back to the dungeon.

Master 40

Prev I TOC I Next

If there is someone who holds first place in the world, then inevitably, there must also be someone who is pushed to second place.

“Adele, did you lose the top spot again?”

“I… I’m sorry, Father.”

A few days ago, in the office of Marquis Felgrave, Adele Felgrave knelt on the floor, facing her father, painfully aware of this truth since childhood.

“B-But I really am trying. Y-Yesterday, I stayed up all night reading magic books and didn’t neglect my training…”

“No, there’s no need to go that far.”

Born as the second daughter, second in magical talent among the heirs, and always second in academic performance at the academy.

“Adele, there’s no need to overexert yourself to catch up with your sister.”

“You only need to do just that much.”

Even in terms of love and recognition from her father, she was always second place.

“…I see.”

Though such circumstances could have driven her to neurosis, Adele merely nodded quietly to her father’s words.

—Creak…

However, from her bowed head, the sound of her teeth grinding escaped.

‘If only I had the same magical tools Father provides, I could do even better…!’

Even though she had grown accustomed to a life of second place, perhaps because of her innate nature, Adele’s desire for recognition had long since festered and twisted.

Until now, she had hidden it as much as possible, fearing her father’s disfavor, but she was reaching her limit.

“Hmm.”

Watching her closely, Marquis Felgrave suddenly let out a faint smirk.

“I hear that in the upcoming talent selection tournament, you were mentioned as the second candidate.”

“…What?”

“I have close ties with the academy officials. So, I also know well that there is only one open spot in the tournament.”

He whispered a truth to Adele that she found utterly unbearable.

“Ugh…”

As expected, Adele’s body began to tremble as she bit her lip in silence.

“…You want to participate in the talent selection tournament, don’t you?”

For Adele, Marquis’s following proposal was something she simply could not refuse.

“If you do me a favor, I will provide you with a magical tool to assist in your upcoming midterm exams.”

“……!”

“If you set a new record in that test, I will put in a good word for you with the academy officials.”

It was the first time in her life that her father had ever offered to support her with magical tools.

More than that, the father who had always told her to be content with second place was now demanding that she achieve first.

“T-Thank you! Father! I’ll do my best!”

“…Such a good child.”

“But… what is it that you need me to do?”

With tears of gratitude welling up, Adele lifted her head and asked.

Marquis, quickly erasing his smirk, finally revealed his request.

“Come to think of it, you’re of marriageable age now.”

“…Pardon?”

“It’s about time I started sending out wedding invitations.”

Thus began the mass delivery of wedding invitations to Whitney.

“If I ask the families indebted to me, it will help divert the attention of the noble ladies.”

“…?”

“Yes, this is an excellent opportunity… I can solidify my position within the Shadow Union.”

As he murmured to himself, a sinister smile crept onto Marquis’s lips once more.

Adele, simply tilting her head in confusion, clenched her fist and made a silent resolution.

‘I don’t know what this is about, but this time, I will definitely succeed!’

At that moment, Adele was filled with determination, thrilled by her father’s unprecedented attention and the thought that, for the first time in her life, she could achieve first place.

Even when she later realized that his “favor” was, in truth, a humiliating tactic no different from seduction—a disgraceful role for a noble lady—her resolve remained firm.

‘Father must have a plan, right…?’

The day before the exam, Adele received a letter from her father informing her that Whitney would be acting as the invigilator for the midterm exam.

(It was the first time her father had ever sent her a letter.)

At that moment, Adele’s resolve became unshakable.

—Rumble!

Returning to the present.

“Ugh…!”

A headless knight struck the ground with his sword, sending a massive shockwave that tore through the vast corridor of the labyrinth and crashed directly toward Adele.

“Urgh… ugh…”

Sensing the impending attack, Adele hastily gathered her mana and deployed a barrier.

However, the shockwave shattered the barrier and ripped through her body.

“…Cough.”

Falling to her knees, she tried to force strength into her legs and rise again.

Yet, the internal injuries inflicted by the impact were too severe, and she collapsed, coughing up blood.

‘Is this… the end for me…?’

Covering her mouth to stifle another bout of blood, Adele quietly accepted her fate.

‘At least… I bought time for the students to escape… Maybe I’ll be remembered as a hero…’

With a faint smile, she closed her eyes, clinging to a small, long-held dream.

—Are you really satisfied with that?

“…!?”

A soft, whispering voice suddenly reached her ears, making Adele’s eyes snap open in shock.

—No matter how much you want to be special, dying won’t accomplish anything, will it?

“W-Who…?”

She muttered as she frantically looked around.

But the only thing she saw was the headless knight, dragging its sword toward her.

—I can give you power.

The whisper continued, gentle yet insistent.

—Then you can finally become the special person you’ve always longed to be…

More precisely, the voice wasn’t just in her ears—it was in her head.

But on the verge of losing consciousness, Adele couldn’t tell the difference.

—If you want it, just nod quietly.

Yet, despite her fading vision, the meaning of those words rang crystal clear.

—I hope you don’t let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity slip away.

The voice, as soothing as the fatherly praise she had always craved, left Adele dazed.

—Creeeak…

The headless knight, now right in front of her, raised its arm, its blade poised to strike.

‘To be… special…’

Staring blankly at the looming figure, Adele nearly nodded without realizing it.

“…Huh?”

But suddenly, an odd sensation in her neck caught her attention.

—Sizzle…

The darkened pendant around her neck, now emitting an ominous black smoke, clung tightly to her skin and veins, staining them black.

“N-No…!”

An instinctive wave of revulsion overtook her, turning her face pale.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she trembled, desperately trying to pry the necklace off with her shaking hands.

“This… This isn’t the kind of special I wanted…!”

However, having exhausted all her magic for tens of minutes while bombarding the headless knight with spells, she no longer had the strength to undo it.

“P-Please help me. I-Is there anyone…?”

Realizing this, she desperately used the last of her strength to crawl backward, away from the headless knight raising its sword before her, begging for help.

“Anyone… please…!”

But at that moment, the necklace coiled tightly around her neck, choking her, cutting off her plea mid-sentence.

—There is no one who will save you.

“Kh… keuh…”

—Good girl. Now, nod your head.

As she gasped for breath, her mind hazy, the voice echoed once more in her head—still gentle but now laced with a faint chuckle.

—Creeeak…

Meanwhile, the headless knight had already raised its sword high into the sky, ready to strike her down.

“F-Father…”

In the face of such relentless despair, Adele trembled uncontrollably, squeezing her eyes shut.

“Please… give me strength…”

Thinking of the father she had so devotedly followed, she whispered her final hope with all her heart.

—Heh, what a pitiful child.

At that moment, the voice echoed again, now unmistakably mocking.

Adele’s eyes quickly dulled, the light in them fading.

—Did you forget who gave you that necklace?

Had she hesitated even a moment longer, she might have lost all hope and nodded her head.

She didn’t even realize that the headless knight, sword raised high, showed no sign of striking her down.

“Hmm, I may not be your father.”

But fortunately for Adele, just before that moment, someone answered her prayer.

“Still, I think I can save you.”

“……!”

“I’m quite the expert in these situations, after all.”

Regaining consciousness at the sound of the gentle voice, Adele felt her body suddenly floating.

Her eyes widened in shock as she looked upward.

“My, you’re quite light, aren’t you?”

“A….”

“At your age, you should be eating properly. It’d be a relief if you’re not malnourished.”

The one holding her in a princess carry was Whitney, who chuckled softly while making a lighthearted remark.

“Then again, being too healthy, like a certain black-haired gorilla we both know, can be a problem too. Haha…”

That mischievous smile, which had always stirred misunderstandings and trouble, now looked incredibly kind in Adele’s half-closed eyes.

“In any case, you did well.”

“……”

“Now, rest.”

Even his usual tone—so easily misunderstood—sounded strangely comforting to her.

“…Thank you.”

Without realizing it, Adele buried her face in Whitney’s chest, whispering in a fading voice as she closed her eyes.

“This debt… I will…”

Though she lost consciousness before she could finish, a single tear rolling down her cheek silently conveyed what words could not.

*****

‘…I made it just in time, it seems.’

After luring away the monsters that had relentlessly chased me, I rushed into the corridor, looking down at Adele, who was now unconscious in my arms, and let out a sigh of relief.

—Crackle…

Fortunately, I had activated my trump card—my sealing magic—just in case.

It allowed me to stop that monstrous high-rank creature from striking Adele at the last possible moment.

‘This… looks an awful lot like black magic corruption.’

Most likely, it was the cause of the strange phenomenon occurring in the labyrinth.

Even the necklace that had been glowing ominously black around Adele’s neck when I first arrived was a clear sign of it.

‘This poor young lady won’t escape punishment for this.’

While the monster was temporarily sealed by my white magic, I swiftly removed the enchanted necklace from Adele’s neck, tucking it into my coat with a grim smile.

…Or perhaps, this could prove useful.

Now that I thought about it, this artifact…

Considering that Adele’s father—the Tower Master—had undoubtedly given it to her, it could be a deadly weapon against him.

‘If I report this right away, they might try to cover it up. I should hold onto it for now.’

I’d keep it safe, resisting its black magic, until I could discuss the best way to use it with Parsha.

“Alright, time to put an end to this mess…”

With my thoughts settled, I turned toward the magic circle, which had noticeably quieted under my sealing spell.

“Urk.”

But suddenly, I lost my balance, stumbling before barely steadying myself.

“This is bad…”

Even though Adele was light, maintaining my sealing magic while moving was draining a massive amount of my life force and white magic.

“Ugh, hold on…”

“Ugh… mmm…”

I tried to lay Adele down gently on the floor, but whether it was because she was stronger than she looked or I was just weak, she refused to let go of me.

“Haha…”

In the end, I gave up trying to pry her off and stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.

“Sir Whitney, I’ll assist you.”

Just then, a composed voice called out from behind me.

“Apologies for arriving late. Breaking through the magic circle took some time.”

Turning around, I saw the female professor who had been overseeing the exam walking toward me with a serious expression.

“I’ll take care of the magic circle. Please take Adele and leave this place.”

“Oh, alright…”

“That armor-type monster won’t move again for a while, so you needn’t worry about me.”

Since maintaining my sealing magic was already pushing my limits, I immediately withdrew my energy, trusting her to handle the rest as I prepared to leave the labyrinth.

—Human…! Release me…!

“…What the?”

Just as I was about to take a step, a tiny spider-like creature clung to my leg, peeking out from inside my coat and speaking to me.

“This thing…”

Though it was small, it was still much larger than a normal spider, making me instinctively grimace.

Had it been hiding in my clothes all this time?

—Let me go…!

‘If I take this thing back to my office, Sasha will probably faint from shock.’

Imagining my aide foaming at the mouth upon seeing the spider, I sighed and grabbed it between my fingers to pull it out.

—That woman… she has a familiar aura…!

Dangling from my hand, the creature suddenly flailed its legs and muttered something.

“Hmm.”

As a white mage sworn to protect justice and hunt down monsters, this was unacceptable.

But…

“Spider, what do you mean by that?”

It seemed like I needed to hear this thing out.

*****

Meanwhile, at that moment, in the Academy Board’s reception room.

“…What did you just say?”

Meredia, who had been leisurely sipping tea, widened her eyes and questioned the sudden bad news.

“An unknown incident has occurred during the Academy’s midterm exam, leaving students and the invigilator trapped inside.”

“We’ve lost contact with them, but since the magic circle seems to be going berserk, there is a high probability of casualties…”

As the report continued, Meredia’s expression darkened more and more.

“Who is the invigilator inside?”

Placing down her teacup, she asked with forced composure.

“…It’s, um… Sir Whitney.”

The servant hesitated before answering, averting his gaze.

Meredia blinked in stunned silence, momentarily unable to process the words.

Then, she calmly stood up and ordered.

“Take me there. Immediately.”

Following closely behind the servant, her steps were neither hurried nor slow.

However…

“…That idiot.”

The words that slipped from her lips were faintly trembling.

Alon wore a blank expression.

Wondering if he was mistaken, he blinked twice, but the man before him still gazed at him with a cheerful smile and an adoring look.

“……You are Prince Karsem, right?”

“Yes? Ah, yes, that’s me, haha. I’ve changed a bit.”

Seeing Karsem awkwardly scratch his head, Alon barely managed to close his gaping mouth.

Seolrang seemed uninterested, but Evan, who had been unsure, couldn’t hide his astonishment and opened his mouth wide.

Even if people change, this was too much of a transformation.

Alon recalled the Karsem he had known half a year ago.

Back then, Karsem was, frankly, nothing more or less than a walking pig.

The clothes he wore looked like they were about to burst, and his face was constantly filled with irritation and inferiority.

And that wasn’t all.

His personality was so arrogant that the word ‘rascal’ suited him better than just ‘troublemaker.’

But how was Karsem now?

The triple chin that used to stand out?

Gone.

No, it had just vanished entirely.

The eyes that had been full of annoyance and inferiority?

They looked completely clean. So clean, in fact, that they even appeared kind.

Moreover, for some reason, he seemed to have grown significantly taller.

“……You’ve changed a lot.”

“That’s right. And it’s all thanks to you, my lord—no, Marquis!”

“Is that so?”

“Yes……!”

Alon still struggled to process it all.

No matter how he looked at it, he couldn’t grasp this man’s transformation.

‘……This feels like something out of a web novel.’

Unintentionally, he recalled the web novels he used to enjoy reading.

Typically, the protagonist, an ordinary person, would possess a spoiled royal or noble who was fat and lazy. After working hard to lose weight, they would become handsome and earn the admiration of servants.

Honestly, he hadn’t fully understood it back then.

Even if someone lost weight, their face and body shape would still remain, wouldn’t they?

But now, Alon could truly relate to the servants in those novels, who clapped enthusiastically.

‘……It makes sense now.’

While he was lost in thought,

“Please have a seat. My father will be here soon.”

“Alright, I will.”

Following Karsem’s invitation, Alon’s group naturally took their seats, and a little later, King Carmaxes III arrived.

Alon, who had finally regained his composure, began to enjoy the banquet.

However, he felt somewhat burdened by the atmosphere.

“It’s impressive that you’ve already reached the first rank.”

“No, it’s all thanks to the marquis’ teachings.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes!”

……The reason was that Karsem praised Alon throughout the banquet.

“……He constantly talks about the marquis.”

“I see.”

“If it weren’t for the marquis, I would probably still be living a miserable life…… That’s why I’m always grateful!”

Quite a lot, too.

“No, I didn’t do much. You achieved this on your own. There’s no need to credit me for it.”

“No! As I said, if it weren’t for you, I would have remained the way I was!”

Too much.

Alon felt his hand, hidden under the table, naturally curl up at Karsem’s passionate gaze fixed on him.

……Karsem seemed truly, genuinely sincere.

***

The next day, after what was quite literally a banquet that only left Alon embarrassed.

“Marquis.”

“What is it?”

“I looked into it, and it seems that the evaluation of Karsem has changed significantly.”

“To that extent?”

“Yes, surprisingly, he’s being evaluated more favorably than the First Prince.”

Hearing Evan’s report, Alon asked, feeling curiosity beneath his indifferent expression.

“Really, to that extent?”

“Yes. Apparently, because of that, the internal atmosphere of the royal palace is becoming a bit strange.”

“Carmaxes doesn’t seem to be managing it separately?”

“I heard that even the king is remaining silent.”

Even the king is silent?

At that moment, Alon let out a low exclamation.

‘So that’s why Karan looked at me with those eyes.’

He recalled the gaze Karan had given him before.

A gaze that hadn’t been particularly friendly, even upon their first meeting, which had left him puzzled.

If the internal atmosphere of the kingdom had indeed turned peculiar, it made sense.

The fact that King Carmaxes III wasn’t controlling the current situation in the palace essentially meant he was tacitly allowing a power struggle for the throne.

‘……From the king’s perspective, it wasn’t an entirely incomprehensible decision.’

While the First Prince, Karan, was better than the Second Prince, he wasn’t exactly a promising candidate for a good king.

He was merely relatively better.

In such a situation, it was natural for the king’s heart to waver when the Second Prince showed better promise over time.

After all, Carmaxes III, though a father, was a king first and foremost, and he thought more as a king than as a parent.

‘……The intriguing part was how a power struggle between the First Prince, who had long been recognized as the heir, and the Second Prince, who was only recently acknowledged, could be possible now…… but there’s no need for me to worry about that.’

At any rate, when Alon put together all the circumstances, he was able to understand the recent events overall.

‘So Karan thinks that Karsem changed because of me.’

Of course, from Alon’s perspective, it was a bit perplexing.

He hadn’t done anything particularly special for Karsem.

“Marquis, what do you plan to do now?”

Evan asked just in time.

Alon answered without hesitation.

“Since I’ve finished my business in Colony, I plan to wrap up the remaining tasks and return.”

“Tasks? Oh, are you referring to the monster you mentioned last time?”

“Yes.”

“Am I going to wait here again?”

“That’s right…… though you seem pleased about it?”

“No way.”

Evan’s face clearly showed an expression of relief—‘Oh, yes, lucky me! No hard work!’

Alon felt oddly annoyed.

For a moment, he considered taking Evan along, but only briefly.

He let out a light sigh and dismissed the thought.

In truth, this trip wasn’t meant to deal with the desert monster directly but was only a preliminary expedition.

Alon recalled the desert monster, ‘Scorpion.’

‘I wish I could deal with it while I’m here.’

Unfortunately, that wish was unlikely to come true.

For now, he didn’t even know Scorpion’s exact location.

Unlike the other monster, Rikrakamur, whose location was clearly identified, all they knew about Scorpion was that it was somewhere in the vast desert, with no distinct landmarks.

Even in the game, tracking down Scorpion required time.

You had to clear the temple that provided a guide, which took about three months of preparation before you could even attempt to confront Scorpion.

Of course, you could wander the vast desert without the guide and search for Scorpion’s location manually.

But why didn’t people do that?

Because finding Scorpion’s cave in the desert was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Additionally, there were ‘Scorpion Soldiers.’

These were the soldiers guarding the monster’s cave.

This was Alon’s second reason for focusing on preliminary work now.

Though called scorpion soldiers, if you played as a mage, they were even more troublesome than Scorpion itself.

The scorpion soldiers, made of sand, numbered in the hundreds.

They endlessly regenerated upon death, and in terms of in-game level, each one was at the expert rank, making them a nuisance.

Moreover, their weapons were all coated with poison, so if you allowed even a single hit, it would be fatal.

However, there was a strategy that allowed you to bypass these troublesome scorpion soldiers—if you obtained the guide through the temple’s preliminary quest, they would all turn into sand and disappear.

“I plan to move tomorrow.”

Alon made his decision.

“I’ll be waiting here.”

As he looked at Evan, who somehow appeared irritating again, Alon thought.

‘……Should I just take him along?’

***

At that moment.

Somewhere in the vast desert, in Scorpion’s cave.

Or rather, in a space so vast that calling it a cave seemed inadequate, scorpion soldiers—who should have only awakened in the presence of intruders—had risen.

However, they did not move.

No, to be precise, it would be more accurate to say they couldn’t move.

The hundreds of soldiers that had awakened to repel the intruder.

Crackle! Crackle-crack!

All of them were skewered by black lightning, trembling as they hovered between life and death.

Amid the immobilized scorpion soldiers, a Beastman with silver-gray hair leisurely glided forward.

His gait was extremely calm, utterly relaxed.

With that same leisurely pace, he strolled through the ranks of hundreds of scorpion soldiers, eventually arriving at the center of the cave.

Ssshhh-!

Once again, soldiers began awakening from beneath the ground.

But that wasn’t all.

Shriiiiik-!!!

Far more soldiers than before emerged from the sand in an instant, surrounding the man.

Soon, the monstrous roar of Scorpion, who had been dormant in the cave, echoed loudly.

Yet, there was no sign of tension on the intruder’s face.

“Ho—”

Instead, as if he found it amusing, the man let out an exclamation.

Crackle-!

He cloaked himself in black lightning.

In the next moment.

Zzt-!

His figure vanished.

When he reappeared, there were no longer any scorpion soldiers near him.

Instead, what appeared before the man was—

A monster.

The scorpion, Scorpion, who had lived for nearly a thousand years while harboring one of the five great relics of sin.

Yet, despite the sight of the scorpion drooling as it gazed at him, the man wore a cheerful smile.

“Well, fine. When I returned to the surface, I was disappointed that the seeds hadn’t sprouted as well as I’d hoped—”

He lightly tapped the creature’s head with a finger.

“You can help with that.”

The moment black lightning flowed from his hand.

!!!!

Scorpion thrashed violently.

Soon, the brown hue of the monster began to change.

It darkened into a shade as deep as the abyss.

Watching the transformation, the man—

“Now, shall we go greet him?”

No, the apostle of ‘Pride’ turned his gaze toward Colony.

“And while we’re at it, let’s pay a visit to my younger sibling.”

***

The next day.

Alon prepared to set off for the preliminary work as planned, though he was feeling somewhat more at ease.

There would be battles, but thanks to Seolrang and Rine agreeing to assist him, he felt reassured.

‘……Rine said she would briefly visit the royal palace, so we’ll leave once she returns.’

Therefore,

Alon was chatting leisurely with Seolrang, who was hugging the drooping Blackie.

Until suddenly,

BOOOOOM-!!!!

A massive noise erupted.

It was distant, yet distinct to everyone’s ears—a tremendous explosion.

Alon instinctively got up and looked out the window.

He couldn’t hide his shock at the sight before him.

“Scorpion?”

The massive monster was tearing down Colony’s walls and forcing its way in.

And then,

“B-brother?”

Alon heard Seolrang’s incredulous murmur beside him.

Ara Hongryeon’s Laboratory.

Currently, this place is undergoing tremendous turmoil due to a new substance discovered by Kyu-seong.

“This is a revolution!”

“The medical community is going to be in an uproar!”

Amidst the cheers of the researchers, Choi Young-seong finally made a long-postponed call to someone.

Triiing…

Even as the ringing continued, Choi Young-seong couldn’t hide his excited expression. Soon, someone answered his call.

“Hey, Choi Young-seong. What’s up?”

“Sorry to disturb you while you’re resting, but there’s something I really need to tell you.”

“Hmm? No, no, it’s not a disturbance at all. But you said you have something to tell me?”

Kang Hanul had no idea what to expect. Young-seong swallowed dryly and then began to explain.

“You know I’ve been holed up in the lab recently, right?”

“Of course, I’m aware.”

“Well, the results are in.”

“What have you been researching?”

Soon, Choi Young-seong, still hearing cheers from his researchers, smiled.

“We’ve conquered dementia.”

What?

“The compound found in the fruit Kyu-seong provided has turned out to be the key to solving dementia. Moreover, only a small amount is needed, so mass production of a treatment might be possible.”

Kang Hanul was silent for a while. However, Young-seong could sense Hanul’s trembling emotion.

“Of course, as I said, it’s just the research results for now. Turning it into a medication is another story. But we can make enough medicine to treat your mother right now.”

“Huh…”

Hanul barely managed to make a sound, still not quite grasping the situation, and Young-seong laughed.

“Hahaha! Yes, I suppose it’s quite shocking. Just wait a little. I’ll make a prototype and bring it to your house right away.”

“Really?! Is this for real?”

“Yes. It’ll be ready by tomorrow. Of course, it won’t cure her immediately with just one dose; it will take long-term use for the brain cells to recover.”

“Ah, ah…”

Finally seeming to grasp the reality, Hanul’s voice, filled with emotion, came through the phone.

“Thank you, really, thank you!!”

“No, no. You shouldn’t be thanking me, but Kyu-seong.”

“Please pass my thanks to Kyu-seong too! And Choi Young-seong, thank you!”

“Haha. Sure, sure. Thanks to Kyu-seong, many people are getting treated, including my wife and your mother.”

Choi Young-seong once again thought back to the first time he met Kyu-seong. A somewhat timid young man who seemed somewhat crushed. In Young-seong’s eyes, he looked more like a kid who had just become an adult.

But the somewhat downcast look had troubled him, leading him to meddle and help him out.

‘That was a stroke of genius.’

If it hadn’t been for that meddling, would things have turned out this way?

Sometimes, fate indeed finds those who make an effort themselves.

Even if Kyu-seong had a pure heart, his help wouldn’t have reached those he had no connection with.

After that, Choi Young-seong began helping people without even realizing it. The intense imprint of that experience prompted him to offer even more kindness.

And Choi Young-seong’s wife, Kim Si-young, was also extremely busy these days. Not only as the vice guild leader of Ara Hongryeon but also recently managing a newly established charity foundation.

‘Is this what they call a positive influence?’

Things he hadn’t noticed during his busy youth, but now he could see beside him.

Not only because of the passage of time or the tragic events he had experienced, but Kyu-seong’s significant influence was undeniable.

“I need to let Kyu-seong know about this fast.”

“How about we go visit him together? With Si-young!”

“That’s not a bad idea. I’ve been overdoing it lately, so maybe a rest at Kyu-seong’s place would be good. Si-young would like it too.”

The thought of visiting Kyu-seong’s dungeon was already exciting. He had held back from visiting too often, worrying about being a nuisance, but it seemed fine now.

“I’ll contact Kyu-seong, so you take care of the rest.”

“Mm. Okay, then set up a schedule and text me.”

“Hahahaha! Will do!”

After hanging up, he felt a weight lifted off his shoulders. Now, all that was left was to make the medication.

‘That won’t take long, either. I’ve already made the samples.’

Moreover, a small amount of the substance was enough to cure, so there was no worry about the fruits. Each fruit contained enough substance to cure approximately 300 people.

Despite using hundreds of fruits for research and experiments, there were still many left.

Moreover, there must be a lot more with Kyu-seong.

Cho Young-seong felt his passion surge and exclaimed, “Okay, okay. Everyone, let’s do this! Let’s put in a little more effort!”

“Oooo!”

***

Thudd.

The sparring match between Ara and Emily.

The duel between the two little ones became a spectacle for our entire family.

-I bet one of my works that Ara will win!

-In my view, Miss Emily will win. I bet one of my saved cookies.

-Ashu thinks both will win! So, they’re all Ashu’s!

Goblins, gnolls, breeding tribes.

Slimes, of course, and even the Kkumuris.

Truly, everyone gathered.

‘Of course, I asked all the Seven Sins to come.’

I didn’t expect it to turn into a group tour.

Thanks to that, we gathered slightly away from the village in a wide open field.

And on the spot, makeshift terraced seats were constructed.

-Hehe!

-Kang.

-Kirik-.

The makeshift terraced seats were quickly constructed by the hands of the Kkumuris, gnolls, and goblins.

Given the large number of people, it was possible, but conversely, it meant there were many to build the steps, so they were quickly completed.

“Wow, they’re built so fast?”

Here, I had a foolish sibling thinking just like me.

Seon-ah filmed, incredulous as she saw the seats being hurriedly constructed.

For a makeshift construction, they were impressively well-made, resembling seats in a professional basketball or baseball stadium.

Naturally, the space in front of the seats transformed into an arena-like setting.

-Let’s start! Take your seats!!!

-(^0^),

-(275)/

Suddenly, fairies took their places to sit first.

I felt a bit sorry just calling the others, so I casually asked Frey if they were out on a group tour.

“Is there anywhere you’re uncomfortable?”

-No! Hahaha! Oh? Lord? Sorry, I didn’t recognize you!

Frey fell for the joke just like that.

At her cute response, everyone burst into laughter.

As everyone took their seats, the fairies used our bodies as chairs. Finally, the contestant entered.

“First contestant, Sister Emily, enters!”

Cheong, taking on the role of the announcer, shakily guided, having ended up in the role due to Ara.

His eyes spinning from the many gazes.

Is this okay?

In the meantime, Emily entered.

Holding a wooden sword from the World Tree, she entered the open field, tense.

-Miss Emily! I bet a cookie on you! Make sure to win!

-Woo woo woo woo! Woo!

Soon, they would have to face each other.

Then Cheong shouted again.

“Second! Sister Ara, let’s gooo!”

However, Ara did not appear.

Cheong, flustered.

But then, realizing something, he spoke again.

“The heavenly ice spike storm rising from hell! Contestant Ara enters!”

“It is Iiiii!!”

We, watching, couldn’t help but burst into laughter again at the strange naming.

It seemed like they just stuck anything that sounded cool.

“The match will now begin!!”

Suddenly, the duel began awkwardly.

Soon, Ara, in a tiger pajama, or rather, in the full armor of the Tiger King, rushed forward.

Whirrr!

“Ooh!”

“Wow!”

Ara’s acrobatics unfolded.

But the speed was so fast it was like a spinning top.

Whatever her intention, it seemed to successfully fluster her opponent.

“Uh, uh?”

Emily didn’t know what to do.

Despite being a sword master, her lack of real combat experience seemed to show.

“Emily! It’s a feint! Just swing your sword!”

Then suddenly, Kyler stood up and shouted.

“Uh! That’s cheating! Who coaches like that!”

“Emily! Just shoot the sword wind!”

Kyler, usually quiet and composed, showing such an unexpected side!

Seems you can’t help being a doting dad.

Thanks to Kyler’s voice, Emily launched her sword wind.

But that was too much of an underestimate of Ara.

Whirl~

Like a spinning top, Ara smoothly deflected Emily’s sword wind.

“Approach and swing directly!”

“Oh, it’s disturbing the viewers. Please, take your seat.”

This time, Emily, heeding Kyler’s advice, approached Ara, who spun like a top.

Finally, the spinning Ara reacted.

Whirrrrrlick!

Thud-thud-thud!

What just happened?

Even with my third-level enhanced vision, I couldn’t discern what had just transpired.

All I could vaguely capture was Emily frantically swinging her sword around.

“Well done! Keep blocking like that and look for an opening. There will definitely be one!”

“Hey, quiet down, sir.”

Thud! Thud!

I’m not sure what it was, but I kept hearing sounds like something hitting.

Then, finally, Ara stopped spinning.

“It’s the secret technique of spinning around. How is it!”

“Wow, amazing.”

It feels like I’m watching a talent show.

It’s a scene where a hero (true) and a demon from the Seven Sins are fighting, but why am I smiling contentedly?

“Now I’ll show my true skills!”

“….”

A tense Emily and Ara, grinning like a mischievous child.

And then, finally, Ara began her real attack.

“Waguu!”

“Wha, what?!!”

Emily’s flustered voice.

And then Kyler, beside me, stood up again.

“Referee! Isn’t that a foul? Who does that?”

By the way, there was no referee.

Just Kyler making a scene on his own.

Today, I saw many sides of him I had never seen before.

As for what Ara did…

“Chomp chomp, yum yum.”

She was literally eating Emily’s wooden sword.

Then the wooden sword became a dagger.

Well, if that’s her true skill, then it’s her true skill.

Ara can eat anything, so it’s an attack that best utilizes her special ability.

“So scary, Ara!”

And Mamon, having seen that, seemed to get PTSD, trembling.

“Ah….”

“Don’t worry about the wooden swords, we have plenty!”

Emily seemed disappointed, so I spoke to her.

Then Emily shook her head and exclaimed.

“No, that’s not it! We’ve completed one quest condition!”

“Ugh…”

What?

Was that brief talent show considered one duel?

“It was a fun duel!”

“Thanks, Ara.”

After the duel ended.

Two of them looked at the result as if they couldn’t believe it.

“Our Emily lost……………”

Hey, Kyler.

You’re a ninth-level awakener and you can’t beat our Ara, aren’t you being too greedy?

-I never bet on anything. And I don’t accept defeat.

-What do you mean? Hand over the cookie!

-Cookie? What cookie are you talking about?

Despite his words, Ras’s fidgety movements were cute.

Eventually, I saved him.

“Ras, do you want to be the next opponent in the duel?”

“Sure! I’ll show the power of the lord!”

The spirited kid was too cute.

As Ras stepped down from the seat and walked briskly towards the open field, Ara passed the baton.

“Did I do well?”

“Yeah. You did so well it was hard to see!”

“Ah, if you can’t see, that’s not good.”

“No worries. Seon-ah filmed it, so we’ll be able to check it out in slow motion.”

“Seon-ah, you’re amazing!”

The rest of the children’s duels went similarly to Ara’s.

There was certainly a lot to see and it was flashy, but…

I couldn’t shake off the feeling of a talent show.

“We’ve filled four! Just one more to go!”

An excited Emily.

Now, just one more duel with Kyler and it would be over.

“Kyler, go and have a duel with your daughter.”

“……”

“Kyler?”

Kyler stood up with a serious expression.

Then, the atmosphere in the venue instantly became solemn.

“Oh, oh!”

“Is it finally a real duel?”

Both mother and father swallowed dryly, enjoying the moment.

Kyler then approached Emily.

Then, unexpectedly, he touched his forehead to hers.

“Here.”

“Huh?”

“Hit me.”

“Ah, Dad, that’s not a duel.”

Apparently, Kyler was much more of a doting dad than I had anticipated.

“Ugh, uaaaaah!”

“Sa-Save me!!!”

The desperate screams of students fleeing from the heart of the labyrinth echoed through the maze.

“Pl-Please, calm down, everyone!”

“In times like this, we must stay composed!”

“A-Adele will find a way to solve this…!”

A few noble students who were Adele’s followers tried to take command of the panicked crowd.

“B-But you saw it too! All of Adele’s magic attacks were deflected!”

“I-It’s impossible. Maybe Cecil could do it, but there’s no way we can defeat something like that at our level…”

“I-I don’t want to die here!”

The overwhelming power displayed by the headless knight had long since thrown the students into a state of panic, making it impossible for them to listen to reason.

“W-What do we do now?”

“Shouldn’t we go back and help Adele…?”

“T-That’s…”

Before they could even finish discussing, the students scattered in all directions. The noble followers, who were left looking flustered, began conversing among themselves.

“Even if we go back to help, would we even be of any use…?”

“But we can’t just leave Adele to fight alone! Unlike Cecil, Adele only specializes in magic!”

“W-Why are you getting mad at me?”

They had no clear solution, and so their conversation led nowhere.

“But at least there aren’t any monsters in the maze. What if we escape quickly and call for help?”

“…It took us about thirty minutes just to get here. Do you think Adele can hold out that long?”

“This won’t work, that won’t work. Then what exactly are we supposed to do?!”

“I-I’m just saying, don’t yell at me!”

Amid the escalating tension, disagreements among Adele’s followers turned into outright internal strife.

“Ugh! I don’t care what happens anymore—I’m going to get help!”

“L-Let go of me!”

“W-Wait!”

“Ah…”

In the end, even Adele’s followers scattered into the smoke, leaving behind only two female students who were particularly close to her.

…

In the depths of the labyrinth, where only the two of them remained, an eerie silence settled.

—Step, step…

Then, breaking that silence, the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps echoed through the mist.

“Hic?”

“Wh-Who’s there!?”

Already on edge, the two female students called out warily toward the smoke-filled intersection.

“C-Could it be another high-rank monster? That would be the end of us…”

“M-Maybe I should’ve just followed the others…”

Despite the approaching footsteps, no response came. As fear overtook them, their faces turned pale.

“Is someone there?”

…

Then, at that very moment, a voice emerged from the smoke.

One of the girls, a petite student, immediately brightened up and raised her voice excitedly.

“I-It’s the supervisor! It’s Sir Whitney!”

“R-Right! He’s the White Mage who defeated the black mages, isn’t he? Then surely, he’ll be able to fix this!”

Tears of relief welled in her eyes as she stepped forward, eager to seek salvation from the approaching figure.

“P-Please help! There’s a high-rank monster in there—!”

“…No!”

“Mm? Mmmph…!”

Suddenly, the elegant-looking student beside her clamped a hand over her mouth and dragged her toward another path in the maze.

“Wh-Why are you doing this…?”

“Shh. You know my specialty is detection magic, right?”

The petite student blinked in confusion as she was being pulled along. Lowering her voice, the elegant girl whispered urgently.

“I’ve been using detection magic ever since we entered this maze, and… Listen carefully, and don’t panic.”

“…?”

“The person in that smoke… is not Sir Whitney.”

The small girl’s face turned deathly pale, and she clasped her hands over her mouth.

“He’s surrounded by monsters… Monsters so powerful that I can’t even properly sense their numbers.”

“…!”

“A White Mage, someone who repels monsters, would never be in that kind of situation.”

The trembling girl opened her mouth, barely managing to whisper.

“Then… the person who responded to our voices is…”

“Shh! Be quiet. Whatever it is, if it hears us, we’re finished.”

A tense silence stretched between them.

—Shshsh…

Then, from beyond that silence, the sound of countless wings flapping and insect-like creatures skittering across the floor filled the air. The girls’ faces contorted with horror.

“D-Dear gods…”

“Aaah…”

Moments later, the creatures began emerging through the smoke—a massive swarm of towering monsters.

Paralyzed with fear, the two girls couldn’t even think about running.

“I-I can’t move…”

“M-Me neither…”

The truth was, they physically couldn’t move. The monsters’ poisonous aura had already paralyzed their muscles.

“W-We have to think of something bright…! Low-rank monsters have poor eyesight, but they can sense human breath and fear…”

“Ugh… Uuuugh…”

Their legs gave out, and they collapsed onto the ground. Holding their breath as much as possible, they prayed that the monsters would pass them by.

—Grkk?

—Krrrk…

But hoping wasn’t enough.

Raised in noble families, they had never experienced such terror before. Controlling their fear in this life-or-death moment was simply beyond them.

“Aaah…”

“Hic…”

The monsters crawling through the maze halted all at once and turned their heads in their direction.

The girls, clutching each other tightly, squeezed their eyes shut, unable to even scream.

“…There you are.”

A chilling voice suddenly rang out through the maze.

“A-Ah!”

The petite student, trembling in despair, tried to rise at the familiar voice but collapsed onto the ground.

“We-We’re saved! We’re saved!”

“S-Sir Whitney! Please, help us! Th-There are too many monsters—”

Relief overcame her pain, and she lifted her head with a tearful smile.

“…Wait? Huh?”

But then, she hesitated, her expression shifting into confusion.

“Why… why are you over there?”

She had finally realized it.

Whitney’s voice wasn’t coming from behind them—but from right in front of them, among the horde of monsters.

“Ahaha… Well…”

Whitney let out a dry chuckle, as if amused by the situation.

At that moment—

—Grrooaaar!

—Grrrrr…

The monsters, which had been watching them in eerie silence, all surged forward at once.

“HIIIIIIIII!!!”

As they shrieked in terror, the petite student flailed her arms, desperately trying to crawl backward.

Then—

“Do not touch the children.”

Whitney’s chilling voice echoed through the labyrinth once more.

—Grkk…

—Screeech…

At those words, the monsters that had been rushing forward froze in place. Then, as if sulking, they turned to look at Whitney before slowly retreating behind him.

“……”

A suffocating silence followed.

“Honestly, why are you still here?”

With a sigh, Whitney pinched the bridge of his nose before stepping toward the two girls. Their faces turned deathly pale.

“This makes things… a little troublesome.”

“P-Please… have mercy…”

“Save us…”

At this point, even the most oblivious person could easily figure out who the mastermind behind this situation was.

“I think you’re misunderstanding something—”

“I-If you spare our lives…”

“We’ll never tell anyone about what we saw…!”

“…You’re not listening to me.”

The girls, who had been frantically begging for their lives, immediately shut their mouths at Whitney’s quiet yet menacing tone.

“You will be safe.”

Stopping just in front of them, Whitney lowered his head slightly, his voice soft and soothing.

“So, just stay still, alright?”

“Ah…”

“It’ll hurt just a little, haha…”

But there was no comfort to be found in his words—not when his hand, brimming with eerie gray mana, reached toward them with a sinister smile on his lips.

“Don’t make such a terrified face.”

As tears streamed down their faces in pure fear, Whitney grinned and whispered gently.

“It’ll all be over in the blink of an eye.”

A flash of gray light filled the corridor, and their consciousness was instantly cut off.

*****

“Well? That wasn’t so bad, was it?”

“Try moving your body. The paralysis should be gone… Hmm?”

I had cast my specialty, healing magic, to cure the girls of the monsters’ venom-induced paralysis. However, as they remained eerily silent, I blinked in confusion and waved my hand in front of their faces.

“Hey, are you okay?”

“Did they… pass out from the venom?”

Their breathing was stable, so it seemed that they had simply fainted under the pressure of the monsters’ aura. This… made things more complicated.

“This is all your fault…”

I had intended to heal them first and then calmly explain the situation, but thinking about it, they probably wouldn’t have been able to focus on my words with all these monsters looming behind me anyway.

—Not… our fault…

—Venom… has long since faded…

Hearing the monsters grumble in protest, I couldn’t help but sigh.

“…Now what?”

There could still be other students left in this area.

The ominous black markings on my map were so thick that I couldn’t pinpoint their exact locations.

If something happened to them, losing my position as an examiner would be the least of my concerns—I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.

—Grumble!

As I stood there, deep in thought with a grim expression, an unsettling sensation crept up my leg.

—Fear… I sense fear…!

I looked down to find a small spider-like monster perched on my leg, pointing toward the elegant girl who had collapsed earlier.

—From that girl… I can feel such raw, delicious terror…!

I scowled and reached down to flick the creature away, but its words made me pause. I turned my gaze toward the girl with a skeptical expression.

“…Hey.”

“You’re awake, aren’t you?”

I poked her side gently, and sure enough, her body twitched ever so slightly.

“If you keep pretending, you’ll end up as monster food.”

“Hiiiik—!”

The moment I whispered that, confirming my suspicion, the elegant girl let out a deflating sigh and bolted upright in sheer panic.

“We’re short on time, so let me ask you quickly. Are there any other students left in this area?”

“Th-Th-That is… um…”

“I understand that you’re scared, but I need you to answer quickly.”

I spoke firmly, and the girl, still trembling, stammered before finally blurting out,

“I-If you still need my help—”

“I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything!”

At the sight of white mana flickering in my hand, she immediately screamed out her response.

“A-Adele is still in there! S-So, I…”

“That’s all?”

“T-There’s also a strange monster wearing armor! Please, just let me go!”

Now that I had all the necessary information, I wasted no time standing up and turning toward the deeper parts of the labyrinth.

“I’m heading inside. Support your friend and get to the exit.”

“Ah…”

“Oh, and about what just happened…”

“I-I won’t tell anyone if you just let me leave!”

Judging by her voice, which was still trembling with fear, it seemed like she had completely misunderstood the situation.

“No, you won’t be leaving.”

But there was no time to explain the truth. I simply stated the crucial information and started walking.

“Huh?”

“This labyrinth… no one can leave.”

If the map was right, then despite all the students from Groups C and D gathering at the exit, their numbers weren’t decreasing at all.

“Wait at the exit. I’ll come find you soon.”

“…Ah.”

It seemed like the only way to resolve this was to find and eliminate the source of the problem myself.

—Human…! Did I do well?

…And why was this creepy little thing still clinging to my leg like we were best friends?

*****

Meanwhile, outside the labyrinth, at the examination site…

“Damn it! We can’t break through!”

“The barrier at the entrance is too strong! There’s nothing we can do!”

A few minutes had passed since the students entered the maze, but an unknown barrier had suddenly appeared at the entrance, throwing the outside into just as much chaos as the inside.

“What about the magic-specialized instructors?”

“We contacted them immediately, but there’s no guarantee the students will be safe until they arrive…”

“Damn it! What the hell is going on here?!”

The assistants, who had been maintaining the magic circle, had long since stopped supplying it with mana, yet the labyrinth remained intact as if it were sustaining itself.

To make matters worse, since this was a physical combat-oriented exam, all the present instructors specialized in martial arts, making them ill-equipped to deal with this situation.

“…We have no other choice.”

Just as the instructors’ expressions grew darker, someone finally stepped forward.

“I’ll enter the labyrinth myself.”

“W-What?”

The supervisor who had been overseeing the exam, a teacher who had remained silent until now, spoke up with a resolute expression.

“My field of expertise is barrier and sealing magic. This barrier is too powerful for me to dispel quickly, but I can still force my way in.”

Adjusting her glasses, she calmly explained her plan and walked toward the barrier.

“B-But are you sure?”

“We have no idea what’s happening inside…!”

The instructors voiced their concerns, but she simply smiled.

“I know it’s reckless…”

Then, throwing herself at the barrier, she continued,

“…but the students’ safety is more important.”

“P-Please be careful!”

“Their safety comes first!”

Receiving a mixture of worried and hopeful farewells, the teacher stepped into the labyrinth.

A heavy silence followed.

“P-Professor…!”

“Uuuaaaah…!”

“We missed you so much!”

The students huddled near the entrance immediately broke into relieved sobs.

“Attention. The magic instructors will arrive soon. Stay here and wait for them.”

“Y-Yes, ma’am!”

“I’ll head deeper to rescue the remaining students.”

With that, she turned toward the mist-filled maze.

“…Good.”

Then, her expression shifted.

A chilling smile crept onto her lips as she muttered,

“Time to check my harvest.”

Her eyes gleamed with an eerie black light.

Round 284

A Mythic-Level Item.

I was absolutely stunned to encounter a mythic-level item. Up until now, I thought legendary items were the highest tier.

“Ah, this was the dungeon of the Seven Deadly Sins.”

The Seven Deadly Sins had never been conquered before. If anything, I was the only one who had ever attempted it.

However, even I hadn’t defeated the Seven Deadly Sins to know about the existence of mythic-level items.

Perhaps Mammon, Ras, and Ashu might also possess mythic-level items.

“A crown, boots, and what about Ashu?”

I roughly guessed the relics of the other children. Could Ashu’s be a spatula? A pot?

In any case, it was an incredible item. Especially the ability to mimic 100% of the absorbed items was quite astonishing.

It seems it can even absorb and mimic items of the same mythic level.

The ability to change appearance was also appealing.

‘I thought Kyler’s disguise was impressive, but now I can do it too, just with this.’

I had some expectations for the relic, but what came out was far more amazing than I anticipated.

“What is it!”

“Wow! It looks cool, sister!”

Suddenly, Ara, with the red slime, or rather the Relic of Gluttony, placed on her head.

All good, but…

We don’t have any helmet items to feed the relic.

“Ara, can you try changing your appearance?”

“What is that?”

Ara tilted her head, seemingly not understanding my words.

It seemed Ara didn’t know about the item’s functions.

‘How did she even know it was something to wear on the head?’

It’s baffling.

First, I took the hat from Ara.

Then I put it on my head and tried using the appearance change ability.

Wriggle.

The relic on my head moved.

Soon, it covered my face and settled softly.

“Oh.”

I was momentarily startled, but the relic stuck to my face felt like nothing.

Really no feeling at all!

“Did it work properly?”

“Wow! You’ve changed!”

“It’s a transformation! Transformation!”

For a moment, Cheong’s word sounded like a curse word.

What was I thinking to teach pure Cheong…

“How about it? Did it change well?”

“Yes! You now have a thick beard!”

“Who is this? It’s scary!”

Ara and Cheong looked at me with excitement and wide eyes.

It’s a pity there’s no mirror.

I stroked my chin, feeling the beard that fit so naturally.

“Wow, this is really fascinating.”

“Me too! I want to try! The beard!”

“The beard!”

The transformation seemed to have no time limit.

Undoing the transformation was simple.

Definitely a fascinating ability.

“Here.”

“Wow!”

I handed it back to Ara, who immediately disguised herself.

She grew a beard just like mine.

“Puhaha.”

The sight was so incongruous it made me laugh. But looking closely, it seemed oddly fitting.

“How can our Ara look cute even with a beard…”

“Ho! Ho! Ho!”

Ara laughed like Santa, stroking the beard as if she liked it, like a generous grandfather.

Although it’s a mythic-level item…

It had become just a toy for us.

‘What would other people think?’

While chuckling at Ara’s ridiculous appearance, Cheong also gave it a try.

Cheong thought deeply with a serious expression and then transformed into a completely different person.

“How is it?”

“Wow.”

To anyone, it was not Cheong.

Still cute, but a completely different look.

“Who is this! It’s not Cheong!”

“It’s Cheong!!”

So, we spent some time taking turns playing with disguises.

What we learned was that we couldn’t change our gender.

However, we could deceive age.

“I’ve become an old man!”

“It’s a grandfather!”

White hair and fine wrinkles.

This time, we tried becoming younger.

“Yuck, it’s weird. It’s strange.”

“It’s weird…”

It was possible to transform into the face of an elementary school student, but not into a newborn. However, the body size or proportions could not be significantly altered, which resulted in a somewhat grotesque appearance. Nevertheless, it was impressive that there was any transformation at all, not just the face but the whole body.

“This is a gift, a gift!”

“Huh? Oh!”

I had completely forgotten about Emily’s quest.

“Hmm.”

The quest required taking the item. I wasn’t sure exactly how to complete the quest, but if it involved completely handing over the item, that would be a bit tricky.

“I’ll just have to check.”

Time had passed quickly while we were engrossed with the relic.

Upon exiting the cave, I found that Kyler, his daughter, and the other family members had already arrived in the village.

Emily was enthusiastically splashing around with the slimes at the waterfall and gorge.

“Ah! Ara! Cheong!”

“Emily! Look at this!”

Ara, holding up the relic, dashed towards her, followed quickly by Cheong.

“This is truly an amazing place, Mr. Kyu-seong.”

“Ah, Kyler, have you had a good look around?”

“Yes. Thanks to you, I’m having lots of new experiences. I’ve traveled through dungeons all over the world, but I’ve never seen a place like this.”

Hmm, to hear such words from Kyler, known as a wanderer, made me quite proud.

“But there are still many areas I haven’t discovered.”

“……What?”

“I’ve been a bit lazy lately, focusing more on farming in the village than exploring.”

As I awkwardly laughed, Kyler’s expression filled with bewilderment.

“I haven’t fully grasped how big the dungeon is yet.”

“Ah!”

Suddenly, Kyler’s expression brightened.

Wondering why, I waited for him to speak, and he confidently said,

“I’ll explore it.”

“What? Oh!”

“While you farm and manage the village, I’ll travel through the dungeon and record everything.”

“That sounds good!”

Kyler was a Level 9 awakener. There was little danger for him.

Furthermore, it seemed fine for Emily to occasionally join him on these trips, enjoying father-daughter outings.

We had plenty of camping supplies and food.

And Kyler likely had much more experience camping and surviving in the wilderness than I did.

‘It’s not just experience; he’s practically an expert.’

Worrying about Kyler was like worrying about a fish drowning.

I needed to see Emily. Though I hadn’t mentioned it to Kyler, he seemed to pay little attention to the kids, but my focus was entirely on them.

“Is there something wrong?”

Kyler, sensing something, shifted his gaze towards the children and asked me.

“Just a moment.”

I went over to the kids.

I saw Ara showing off the Relic of Gluttony to Emily.

“Ta-da!”

“Wow, what’s that? It looks cute.”

“It’s a hat!”

“A hat?”

“Try it on!”

Just as Ara handed the relic to Emily, I noticed Emily hesitate.

“Huh?”

She looked around, puzzled, as if searching for us.

“Is it a quest?”

I rushed over to Emily, and Kyler followed me without understanding why.

“What happened?!”

Emily responded to my abrupt question,

“Uh, um, the quest is complete.”

“Great!”

A quest completed just by holding the item!

I somewhat understood it. Holding the Relic of Gluttony in such a unique situation would have been impossible otherwise.

‘To obtain a relic of the Seven Deadly Sins, you’d have to defeat them or scour every corner of the dungeon.’

But the dungeon of the Seven Deadly Sins was a level nine dungeon. As powerful as Emily was as a level eight awakener, it was nearly impossible.

So, merely holding the relic was as good as obtaining it in such circumstances.

“You cleared the quest?”

Kyler, finally catching on to our conversation, muttered with a dazed expression.

Then, Kyler looked at the relic in Emily’s hand.

“Is that the relic…?”

“Ha, haha, surprise!”

I spread my arms wide with a bright smile.

Kyler gave me a dazed look and then swallowed hard.

“Mr. Kyu-seong, what exactly…”

“Uh, um. It’s a misunderstanding.”

It was just coincidentally that the quest was resolved. Everyone wins. Hahaha.

But Kyler’s trembling eyes couldn’t stop.

After completing the relic quest, Emily experienced exponential growth. She unlocked an ability called ‘Aura’, which allowed her to use sword energy using mana.

“Wow.” It felt like something out of a novel or game brought to life.

Emily was swirling a wooden sword made from the World Tree branches, wrapped in aura, here and there.

Screech.

Hard rocks were being cut as easily as tofu.

The surreal scene didn’t feel dangerous at all. It was almost unbelievable.

“Wow.” Even Kyler, watching from the side, looked dumbfounded.

And Seon-ah was sending admiring glances from beside.

“I wish I had awakened such a cool ability when I awakened.”

“Be thankful you awakened at all, talentless sister.”

Though calling him talentless was pot calling the kettle black, we watched Sword Master Emily’s dance for a while.

Despite rarely moving her body and having never held a sword before, she moved as gracefully as if she had trained for decades.

Clap clap clap clap.

“You’re amazing, Emily!”

“So cool!”

‘I awakened her. And I nurtured her growth too! I really have become a hero maker.’

I chuckled to myself, satisfied as Emily, who had finished her sword swinging, ran over with a bright smile.

“This is so cool!”

“Our Emily speaks Korean like a native now.” Seon-ah said with a contented smile like mine.

Ah, that made me curious about Emily’s next quest.

“Emily, do you know what your next quest is?”

“Oh! Just a minute.” Seeing Emily grow was satisfying in a way.

I’m just a liquid synthesizer, no, a Slime Overlord who summons and merges slimes every day…

‘Feels like nurturing a super OP character!’

Emily checked her quest and read it clearly.

“Training to become a hero! Duel with five different individuals of level 9 or higher!”

“Ah.”

This one was going to be tough.

Kyler, hearing the details, showed a troubled look.

“I can take one, but the other four…”

First, the great witch Katrina. Maybe she’d agree if I asked?

That leaves three more…

‘Wow, this is tough.’

Emily’s quests, even the early ones, presented insane difficulties. The second quest, stealing the relic, was nearly impossible. If someone unrelated to me had received such a quest, they’d likely never complete it.

“Kyler. Are you not well-acquainted with other level 9 awakeners?”

“Um, we are old acquaintances. The kind who draw weapons as soon as we see each other.”

“Kyler. What kind of life have you led?”

This made things incredibly difficult.

Should I personally request deals with level 9 awakeners using my crops?

But there was a concern.

The quest clearly stated duels, but what if a deranged level 9 awakener decided to go all out?

‘No way!’

Our Emily! Not a hair on her head should be harmed!

Suddenly, Ara, who was next to us, approached Emily and took a boxing stance.

“Bring it on, Emily!”

“Uh? Ah, Ara?”

Emily, looking bewildered, soon gave a troubled smile and patted Ara’s head.

However, Ara, seemingly serious, or perhaps comically, shook her body and made whooshing noises with her mouth.

“Whoosh! Bring it on!”

“Uh?”

Wait a minute.

I realized there was no need to specifically look for level 9 awakeners!

The quest specifically stated individuals of level 9 or higher skills.

So…

“Ara, Ras, Mammon, Ashu.”

And finally, Kyler.

Huh.

Quest complete, right?
