Master 38

“The inside is cleaner than I expected?”

As soon as I entered the maze, I muttered the line that somehow popped into my head, then began moving forward while glancing around.

—Whoooosh…

Thick smoke, filling the maze that had expanded several times its original exam hall size due to spatial expansion magic, obscured my vision.

Fortunately, unlike the students who would soon follow, I had something to rely on.

“Let’s see, the supervisor should be in… Sector D, right?”

That was because the supervisor was given a map with tracking magic that displayed the real-time status and locations within the maze.

—Sir Whitney, can you hear me?

“Ah, yes.”

—Confirmed. If any unusual signs appear, we will inform you immediately.

Additionally, I had a crystal orb that allowed me to communicate with the faculty outside, who were monitoring the entire maze in real-time.

At the very least, I wouldn’t have to worry about getting lost inside.

“It feels like playing a dungeon RPG with a map hack enabled…”

But now that I think about it, just because I won’t get lost doesn’t mean I can let my guard down.

Because, if necessary, I would have to eliminate the monsters lurking within the dark, malevolent smoke, waiting for their opportunity.

For the teachers who had been supervising the exam earlier, low-tier monsters wouldn’t even be considered a threat.

But I had no real combat experience.

‘Well, as long as I don’t make any mistakes, there shouldn’t be a problem.’

At least the fortunate thing was that I was a white mage—one of the rarest human resources, even in the empire.

Even a low-ranked white mage like me didn’t have to worry about being taken down by summoned creatures of black mages, as long as I remained cautious.

Since my family had produced white mages—the only natural enemies of black mages—for generations, we were still treated as a noble count family, even though we were on the verge of collapse.

“Judging by how quiet these things are, have they noticed my presence?”

Sure enough, the monsters that had been loudly chattering moments ago—about souls, flesh, and other nonsense—fell eerily silent as soon as I entered.

‘…Why do I feel like a human totem?’

Even when I checked the pre-provided map, the black dots marking the monsters’ locations remained completely still.

It made me realize why white mages were so highly valued.

‘Is it possible that understanding monster language is just a standard ability for white mages?’

The thought crossed my mind, and I decided that I should ask my father once he returned.

With that in mind, I resumed walking.

“Huh?”

Around the halfway point to Sector D—the area designated for the supervisor—I noticed something strange on the map and stopped in my tracks.

‘Why does the distance between me and the monsters seem to be shrinking?’

The black dots, which indicated monster positions, were gradually converging toward where I stood.

‘…What’s going on?’

Monsters instinctively avoid white magic.

Even a small artifact imbued with white magic could ward off most low-tier monsters.

That means there’s no way these creatures would voluntarily approach me, a walking generator of white magic…

“What?”

For some reason, these things were approaching at an alarmingly fast pace.

Could they have mistaken my peculiar grayish-white magic for dark magic?

‘No, that can’t be it.’

Even though my white magic was a little strange, the elders of my family and the Lumen Ordo—the association of white mages—had officially recognized me as one of their own.

Just because my magic emitted an eerie aura, it didn’t mean monsters would flock to me like moths to a flame, right?

‘I need to contact the faculty first…’

But regardless, something unexpected was clearly happening.

I grabbed the communication crystal to pause the exam for a moment.

—Bzzzt…

However, no matter how much I shook it, all I could hear was static and distorted noise.

‘…Something’s wrong.’

Now that I thought about it, the faculty should be monitoring the maze in real-time from outside.

If such a conspicuous anomaly was occurring, they would normally intervene.

But since no action was being taken, something was definitely amiss.

‘Should I focus on securing the students’ safety first?’

Right now, in this situation, I was the only one who could ensure their safety.

‘But… all the monsters are gathering toward me?’

The real problem was that the person in the most danger inside this maze right now… was me.

—AFAFAF…

As that realization sank in, a spine-chilling noise—like the sound of insects crawling—began to echo from all directions.

“…Hoo.”

Recognizing the sound as that of low-tier monsters resembling bugs, I let out a quiet sigh and summoned my grayish-white magic to my hands.

“Alright, let’s do this.”

Finally, as I spotted grotesque figures emerging from the mist at a forked path ahead, I braced myself and prepared for battle.

“…This is actually a good opportunity to get some real combat experience.”

The grotesque monsters slowly revealed themselves through the thick smoke, threatening to overwhelm me.

But I steeled my nerves.

*****

Time passed, and several dozen minutes had gone by since the exam began.

“Um, Adele… doesn’t something feel off?”

One of the students in Group C, who had been following their leader Adele Felgrave through the maze, spoke up with an uneasy expression.

“The maze is way too quiet…”

“Now that you mention it… We haven’t seen a single monster, not even an ant.”

“That… doesn’t make sense, does it?”

As anxiety spread among the students, they began whispering among themselves.

“Hmph, that’s obvious.”

Adele, who had stopped in front of her group, shrugged her shoulders and spoke with a confident smirk, instantly drawing everyone’s attention.

“It’s because I’ve been continuously casting a spell to repel monsters.”

“What!?”

“Wait, is that even possible?”

As soon as Adele nonchalantly made her statement, the students gasped in astonishment.

Enjoying the admiration, she added with a proud expression,

“Who do you think I am? And who do you think my father is?”

“Ah…”

“Knowing a simple monster repelling spell is a given, isn’t it?”

For a brief moment, the students recalled what they had learned in their academy lessons—that monsters had high resistance to magic, meaning that only white magic or physical force could be effective against them, with a few exceptions.

However, Adele’s confident demeanor, her background as the heir to a prestigious mage family, and the actual situation unfolding before their eyes made them unconsciously nod in agreement.

“Unlike that black-haired gorilla, we don’t need to foolishly fight monsters. We’re heading straight to the center of the labyrinth.”

As the realization that they might not just pass but even get a perfect score dawned on them, their eyes sparkled with excitement.

Seeing this, Adele smirked arrogantly and continued walking forward.

“After all, the condition to pass this test is simply to retrieve the token from the labyrinth’s center.”

“S-So… does that mean…?”

“As long as you follow me properly, not just the second-year record, but even the third-year overall record might be broken.”

With those words, the students—now practically her followers—rushed after her in unison, causing a satisfied smile to appear on Adele’s face.

‘I brought it just in case, but I never expected that even the academy’s magic detectors wouldn’t be able to sense it.’

Just as Adele murmured to herself, the reason the maze had suddenly fallen silent wasn’t because of some nonexistent “great monster-repelling spell.”

‘As expected, Father’s artifact is incredible. Hehe.’

It was because the anti-magic necklace, personally crafted by her father—Winston Felgrave, the most renowned and brilliant mage of the current Magic Tower—was discreetly exerting its power.

Since monsters, which were creatures summoned through black mages’ power, ultimately fell under the category of magic infused with dark energy, Adele’s assumption that the artifact would affect them had proven to be quite accurate.

‘But… the effect is too strong, and that’s a problem in itself.’

However, as Adele walked forward with light steps, her expression gradually darkened.

‘At this rate, I might draw suspicion…’

Originally, her plan was to activate the artifact just enough to weaken the spells within the maze and subtly diminish the monsters’ power without making it obvious.

But whether the artifact was too powerful or something else had gone wrong, the monsters weren’t showing up at all.

As a result, there was a high possibility that the faculty or the supervisor, Whitney, would start finding the situation suspicious.

‘I should probably lower the output a bit… huh?’

With that thought, Adele subtly reached for the necklace, intending to minimize the artifact’s output.

But as she glanced downward, her eyes widened in shock.

—Ssssshhhhh…

For some unknown reason, the necklace had turned pitch black and was emitting an ominous smoke.

“W-What is this…?”

“Hm?”

“…Ah, no, it’s nothing. I must have seen wrong.”

Startled by the unexpected situation, Adele briefly lost her composure.

However, she quickly regained her noble demeanor, muttering in an elegant tone while swiftly covering the necklace with her hand.

‘T-This has never happened before… Why now…?’

Fortunately, the thick smoke inside the maze helped conceal the eerie smoke coming from the artifact.

But that didn’t mean the problem was solved, and cold sweat started forming on Adele’s forehead.

“Ah! Look over there! The door to the central chamber!”

But before she could dwell on it any longer, a teammate who had been keeping watch ahead delivered some good news.

“There aren’t even any monsters guarding it! Adele, you’re amazing!”

“Hmph, hmm.”

Clearing her throat at the student’s excited remark, Adele feigned composure and started boosting her team’s morale.

“Well, this much is only natural. Now, if we just retrieve the token inside, we’ll all pass this exam—”

—…!

“…Huh? Everyone! Take your positions!”

A sudden tremor shook the ground beneath them, cutting off Adele’s sentence.

She swiftly commanded her teammates into a defensive stance.

“……”

Tense silence settled over them as they braced themselves.

—Woooom…

Then, within the quiet atmosphere, the thick mist in front of them began swirling and gathering in one place.

Seeing this, Adele’s lips curled into a faint smile.

‘…Looks like the gatekeeper is being summoned properly. This should help ease any suspicions.’

With that thought, she let out a small sigh of relief and began casting all the offensive spells she could use.

‘A gatekeeper should be a low- to mid-tier monster at best. No matter how high its magic resistance is, my magic—Adele Felgrave’s magic—will definitely work against it.’

With confidence, she envisioned herself effortlessly overpowering the guardian with overwhelming performance, breaking records despite the penalty imposed on her.

‘Hah, let’s see if the Lindgard family can still look down on me after this.’

But the moment the swirling mist started forming into a solid shape, revealing the entity standing before them…

“…Huh?”

Adele’s triumphant expression gradually froze in shock.

“A-Adele…?”

“T-That thing looks… weird.”

Her teammates, who had been nervously swallowing their fears behind her, felt the same unease.

—Screeeech…

Because standing before them wasn’t the insect-like low-tier monsters or beast-like mid-tier creatures they had seen in textbooks.

“…Isn’t that a high-tier monster at minimum?”

It was a headless knight clad in black armor, engraved with ominous symbols.

“E-Everyone, retreat! That’s not something you can handle—”

As the monstrous entity slowly turned its body toward them, Adele realized that something was seriously wrong and hastily gave the order to retreat, stepping back.

—Sliiing…

At that very moment, the headless knight raised its sharp blade, pointing it directly at her.

“…Ah.”

Before she could even react, the knight kicked off the ground and charged toward her.

—Whoooosh…

More precisely, it was charging toward the artifact hanging around her neck, which was still emitting dark smoke.

*****

“What the hell is going on now?”

Dripping with sweat, I slumped down in a corner of the maze to catch my breath.

Then, spotting a strange new marker on the map, I scowled.

“…Why does it look so ominous?”

In the very center of the maze, an ominous and enormous marker—something far larger and more sinister than anything I had seen before—had just appeared.

‘Does this have something to do with that tremor I felt earlier…?’

I frowned, glaring at the dark aura on the map that seemed like it would engulf everything.

Then—

“Ah.”

I spotted the blue dots within that ominous marker, and every hair on my body stood on end.

“…This is bad.”

Because those blue dots represented none other than the students taking the exam inside the maze.

‘I don’t have time to think about anything else. I need to save the students first—’

Determined to rush to their aid, I quickly got up to move.

“……”

But the moment I took in the sight before me, my legs nearly gave out, and I almost collapsed back to the ground.

—Grrrr?

—Kruoooh?

Despite eliminating them over and over, the monsters had multiplied into a massive swarm, completely surrounding me.

—Why… are you running away?

—Come on… fulfill your duty to us…

And to make things worse, these grotesque creatures, which had been relentlessly chasing me, were now bowing low to the ground and pressing their disgusting faces against me—like puppies trying to nuzzle their master.

“…What the actual hell is going on?”

For the first time ever, I longed for the comforting sight of the monitoring screen that used to separate me from these creepy creatures.

“In the forgotten age of gods… A being higher than the five supreme gods?”

[Indeed. If it can interfere with the divine domain, it must be a higher existence than them. And that, even I cannot grasp. Just what kind of being could it be?]

A being so lofty that even the Dragonkin could not fathom.

Could Ulthultus possibly know about this existence? After all, he was the one who mentioned it first.

[No, he wouldn’t know. He must have made a similar misunderstanding as I did.]

“Then about that black thing—”

[At the current point, I do not know.]

At the Dragonkin’s firm declaration, Alon remained silent for a moment before shrugging his shoulders.

“It feels like the more I come to solve mysteries, the more they only seem to deepen.”

[Well, from your perspective, that’s understandable.]

Alon let out a sigh and decided to set this topic aside, choosing to ask a different question.

There were still many things he wanted to ask.

“Let’s go over the rest of the story first.”

With that, Alon began recounting everything that had happened in his mind, one by one.

A short while later.

[…… It seems more happened than I thought.]

“As you heard.”

Over the course of about 30 minutes, Alon conveyed everything he needed to say to the Dragonkin.

First was about meeting Duke Komalon and the magic of the True Mage he mentioned.

Second was the information that the ‘black things’ would soon rise again.

Lastly, there was the story of the golden dragon, Lainisius.

The Dragonkin, who remained silent while occasionally flicking its long tail, eventually organized its thoughts and began speaking.

[First of all, I was not aware of the information regarding those entities, as that sealed dragon had mentioned.]

“Is that so?”

[Yes, from the beginning, my understanding was a bit different. Well, in any case, even if those entities went through such a process to ascend, it would be meaningless for the gods to remain silent.]

“Can you reveal it now?”

[I can only tell you the prelude of what you know, but if it’s necessary, I shall.]

When Alon nodded immediately, the Dragonkin maintained silence for a moment before speaking slowly.

[It’s not a particularly exciting story. From your perspective, it’s nothing more than an old tale.]

A voice as if recalling a distant memory.

[In the past—what you call the forgotten age of gods—was literally a world where gods and humans coexisted. Humans worshiped the gods, and the gods granted blessings in return for faith.]

[Many things were different from now. Instead of the term ‘nation,’ territories were divided under the names of gods, wizards were called True Mages, and there was only one nation of humans. If I recall correctly, it was a country founded by someone named Palahon.]

The Dragonkin stared intently at Alon.

[Anyway, that was the kind of world it was. A world where gods existed, and different races, including humans, offered faith to those gods, while True Mages like you could imprint their laws onto the world.]

Murmuring as if reminiscing old memories, the Dragonkin continued.

[To be honest, that world couldn’t be called peaceful, even as an empty phrase. Problems arose daily. However, it wasn’t an era of constant warfare—at least not until they appeared.]

“……The black things.”

[Yes, them.]

The Dragonkin’s blue eyes narrowed in a frown.

[They appeared out of nowhere and began slaughtering every living being they saw, be it gods, humans, different races, or True Mages. All of them, without exception.]

“……Did they have a purpose?”

[No, there was no purpose. Or perhaps there was, but we had no way of knowing. From the start, they had no intention of communicating with us.]

For a moment, the atmosphere around him changed.

[Many gods rose to fight them. Some gods fought alone, while others formed alliances. They took up weapons to slay those unknown beings. And the result is what you see now.]

“……They lost?”

[It wasn’t just a loss. Most of the gods who rose to deal with the black things were annihilated.]

A powerless voice hovered in the air.

[Normally, gods do not perish so easily. Even if they do fall, they can revive within days or, at most, decades as long as they have faith.]

[But the gods who fell back then—most of them vanished entirely.]

“……Is there a reason for that?”

[It’s simple. Their names were taken.]

The loss of their names.

[For gods, names are crucial. No, not just their names; every element that constitutes a god is vital. However, if even one of those elements is taken away, a god cannot maintain their form.]

“……”

[Some had their names stolen. Others had their bodies, their minds, or their honor taken away. And thus, they were annihilated. I was no exception.]

A self-deprecating smile appeared on his face.

[I lost my name and narrowly avoided annihilation by sealing myself in my own temple at the last moment.]

It must have been a final desperate act.

An incomplete but necessary measure to continue living.

“Then, did other gods survive in the same manner?”

[That, I do not know either. I sealed myself around the time when the war had just begun. However, the gods who have survived to this point are those who were extremely powerful in the old era.]

“Why is that?”

[Because they managed to survive even after losing their names, wouldn’t that be obvious?]

In any case—

[In conclusion, the gods were defeated by those entities. They were even deprived of their positions as ‘gods.’]

“……Usurped.”

This was—

[Yes, usurpation. We, who were once the gods of this continent, are now called Outer Gods, while they are revered and feared as the ‘Five Great Sins.’]

Thus, the ‘origin story’ of the Five Great Sins was revealed.

“I have a question.”

[What is it?]

Alon, who had been silently listening to the Dragonkin’s story, suddenly had a thought.

“Why did the Five Great Sins steal your names and usurp the gods’ positions?”

[Well, I only learned of that after awakening from my seal, but if I had to speculate, it might have been to make us forgotten.]

“……Make you forgotten?”

[It’s merely speculation.]

“Still, I want to hear it.”

[When I awakened, the original gods had disappeared, and the True Mages’ legacy had been severed. Additionally, according to what you said, the dragons were completely slaughtered and became nothing more than mythical beings.]

The Dragonkin’s voice continued calmly.

[……I understand that the era ended with the death of the gods, True Mages, and dragons. But there are too many unresolved issues to simply accept that.]

“….. Are you referring to the usurpation of the gods’ positions?”

[It’s not just that. The same goes for the magic of the True Mages. Even if they had all died, their lineage should have continued to some extent. Yet look around. Is there any other True Mage in this world besides you?]

“……There isn’t.”

[Exactly. That’s what I mean. Something is off. Even if the gods perished, their information shouldn’t have vanished, and even if the True Mages died, there’s no reason for their laws and research to have disappeared.]

Even if the True Mages failed to leave an imprint of their will, it wouldn’t explain everything.

With a firm and resolute tone, the Dragonkin declared.

[This world has lost all its information. About the dragons, the gods—and the True Mages. It’s as if—]

The Dragonkin exhaled heavily.

[It was all fabricated.]

***

On the way back from the ruins.

[Meow—]

Watching the small black creature clinging to Seolrang’s hand and flying in real-time, Alon calmly organized the conversation he had with the Dragonkin afterward.

No, in fact, there wasn’t much to organize.

Most of it was just speculation.

‘……Well, sealing oneself during a war can’t be helped, after all.’

In the end, there were two clear truths that Alon gained from this conversation.

First, although the exact motive was unknown, the Five Great Sins had usurped the positions of the gods and tried to thoroughly erase traces of the old era.

Second, it explained why Duke Komalon referred to himself as a half-finished mage.

‘So, the technique involves imprinting the will.’

Alon recalled the Dragonkin’s explanation about True Mages.

[True Mages each have their unique manifestation. As I mentioned before, that manifestation is only possible when there is an imprint of will.]

[The technique is the next stage of that manifestation. It involves engraving laws and will onto a mana core, unifying with those laws. Only then do True Mages confidently call themselves True Mages.]

[Well, you’ll learn more about it three months from now when the item you entrusted to me is ready.]

“……So that’s why he called himself a half-finished mage.”

Understanding Duke Komalon’s meaning, Alon unconsciously let out a deep sigh.

Though he had learned some things, there were still unresolved questions.

Why did the black entities want to erase the past?

Considering the story of the golden dragon, Kylas was clearly a True Mage, so why did he appear as an Outer God?

Numerous questions swirled in his mind, making it hard to think clearly.

However, Alon decided to set aside those doubts for now and refocus on his primary objective.

‘Right now, the top priority is to stop the Five Great Sins.’

Ultimately, for him, there was only one truly important task.

To stop the Five Great Sins and live a peaceful life as a noble.

Beyond that, Alon had a secondary goal—a deeper exploration of magic.

Initially, magic was something he learned merely for self-preservation, but it had become an indispensable part of his life.

In this world, it was the only thing that sparked his curiosity and desire for improvement.

Therefore—

‘……First, I need to do the preliminary work to deal with those abominations. And when the original story begins, I’ll briefly join forces with the protagonist to obtain that item. With it, I should be able to meet Kylas.’

As he organized his plans once again, Alon gazed at the slowly rising sun in the middle of the sky.

—It was in the middle of a scorching desert.

“Greetings, Marquis. His Majesty the King wishes to see you.”

“Me, you say?”

“Yes. He also requested that Lady Seolrang accompany you.”

Having returned to Colony, Alon was unexpectedly invited by the King.

“Master, what do you want to do?”

While Alon was puzzled as to why Carmaxes III was calling for him, he still asked.

“When should I go?”

“You may depart immediately if you wish.”

“……Then let’s head out right now.”

He accepted the King’s invitation.

Of course, he wanted to take a moment to rest and organize his thoughts, but he knew it was common courtesy not to refuse an invitation from the King.

Boarding the prepared carriage, he headed toward the royal palace of Colony and soon began walking along the luxurious interior paths, as he had done before.

A short while later—

Just as he was nearing the banquet hall where Carmaxes awaited, he encountered a man.

A man who was staring intently at him.

“?”

Feeling the man’s gaze, Alon instinctively turned to meet his eyes, and shortly afterward, he realized who the man was.

‘Karan?’

Karan, the current prince of Colony and the sixth king who would eventually succeed Carmaxes V in the story.

He was staring fixedly at Alon.

With an expression that clearly conveyed immense displeasure.

Just as Alon began to wonder about the meaning behind that gaze—

Likewise, Seolrang, who had been watching Karan, started narrowing her eyes.

However, a moment later—

In the end, Alon managed to get past the confrontation with Karan without any incident.

Despite appearing as though he had been waiting for this moment, Karan soon turned his gaze away and went on his way.

“Marquis, do you happen to know that gentleman?”

“I don’t.”

“Then why was he glaring at you like—uh, I mean, why was he looking at you so intently?”

Evan quickly changed his words after glancing around and noticing the guards nearby.

“I have no idea either.”

Naturally, Alon didn’t know.

Though he was aware of Karan from his experience playing Psychedelia, this was the first time they had actually met face to face.

Of course, it was possible that Karan had learned of Alon through various rumors and reports, but even taking that into account, the hostility he displayed was rather strange.

Alon briefly tilted his head in confusion.

Soon afterward, he attended the banquet.

“Greetings, Marquis!”

“?”

The moment he entered the banquet hall, he saw a man bowing deeply to him, which left him momentarily bewildered.

However, he quickly marveled inwardly.

“……It’s been a while, Prince.”

“Yes!”

The handsome man currently bowing his head before him—

Alon soon realized that it was none other than the second prince, Karsem, who, half a year ago, had been ridiculed as a walking pig for his chubby figure covered in soot.

“???”

Countless question marks seemed to float above Alon’s head.

Round 283

Portal to Sky Island.

I ascended to the island floating among the clouds with the Kylers and our family.

“This is…….”

“Wow! Dad, look! We’re inside the clouds!”

Seeing Emily and Kyler’s reactions filled me with pride.

Yes, this is why I invite guests home. Plus, I must be the only one on Earth who owns a place like this.

My family looked at Kyler and Emily with content smiles.

“But Ara, where do we use this key?”

“It’s used in the village of the ancient slimes!”

“Oh! How do you know that? Do you remember something?”

“I found it myself! It’s an adventure!”

Ara declared confidently.

At the same time, Cheong clapped admiringly at Ara.

“Clap clap clap. That’s amazing, sister.”

“Ahem!”

I didn’t know what it was about, but I joined in the applause. Then, the applause spread, and everyone started clapping.

It seems they found something while singing songs of exploration and adventure. But I know the ancient slime village; where exactly was it?

‘I’ve been out of it lately. But I thought I had looked everywhere.’

I guess I’ll find out if I follow Ara.

So, I followed Ara, who led the way.

I told my family I’d be going somewhere following Ara and left the Kylers in their care for a while.

The relic of gluttony…

I’ll check what it is and then see what to do about Emily’s quest.

‘It feels like I’ve become a hero maker… like that game, Princess Maker. My own hero! With added danger signals!’

I still don’t understand.

Why do I need to be careful about heroes?

Even though more than half of the Seven Sins are my familiars!

I am proud!

With these thoughts, I headed to the village.

My family didn’t come straight to the village but seemed to show the Kylers around.

Brring!

(Sorry, sorry. I’ve been too busy to pay attention lately.)

Since reaching awakening level three, I’ve understood the slimes much better.

It seems I was seriously weak as an awakener and couldn’t perform to my original abilities.

Brring.

(That’s okay, that’s okay. Did you eat well?)

“I had a meal. But your way of speaking is quite unique.”

Thanks to the portal, I freely came and went, and some of my slimes were noticeable.

The ancient slimes had never come down to our village; they said they needed to prepare mentally.

It’s understandable since they’ve lived in this remote place all their lives.

“So, where to?”

“Follow me!”

I followed Ara, and soon realized she was heading behind a waterfall.

“That’s where the slimes grow their crops.”

“Yes!”

Ara nodded vigorously.

Could it be that the relic of gluttony was here?

“Ah!”

I remembered I hadn’t gone deep inside. I had only cared about the crops at the entrance and had been busy working.

Sure enough, Ara and Cheong entered deeper into the cave.

As we walked further in, the clusters of light became fewer, and soon only a few floating things remained.

And then, an ancient-looking door was revealed.

“Wow.”

It was clearly no ordinary door.

Why hadn’t I looked more closely before?

I’ve become too complacent since life got easier.

“Open it and go in.”

Creeeak.

Boom boom boom.

Ara’s strength was displayed here.

Seeing Ara exert so much effort, I wouldn’t have been able to open it alone.

Inside the door, a small room appeared.

And a familiar-looking altar.

“That’s…….”

The place where I first found Ara.

And now, split in half, leading to the dungeon of gluttony with stairs and a door entrance.

The altar looked the same, or rather, upon closer inspection, slightly different.

“There’s a relic here!”

An ancient slime that had followed us was bouncing around and talking to us.

Brring! Brring!

(You must not touch the relic!)

“Oh? Shouldn’t touch?”

Brrong!

(Yes! Gula said not to touch! It’s precious!)

“Gula was Ara’s old name, right?”

“Yes!”

Ara answered energetically while greedily eyeing the key in her hand.

“It’s a treasure. He! He! He!”

The ancient slime’s words went in one ear and out the other. Only Cheong was restless, tugging at Ara’s clothes.

“Is it dangerous?”

“Huh? It’s okay!”

Brrong.

(Just looking is allowed.)

Listening to their conversation, I started to feel a bit anxious.

I finally asked the ancient slime about the relic.

“Is it a dangerous object?”

Brring?

(What? The relic?)

“Yeah. So I thought that’s why it’s blocked.”

Brrong?

(I don’t know?)

“Huh? Then why block it?”

Brring!

(Because Gula said not to touch it!)

“But that Gula is Ara right here now.”

Brrriiing?

(Gula?)

The ancient slime tilted its head, seemingly realizing something.

Brrong!!

(That’s right!!)

What is this guy doing? Acting all cool and then this?

Eventually, the ancient slime stepped back.

Brrong!

(I clearly listened to Gula. So it’s not my fault!)

“Yes! There’s nothing wrong! So let’s open it now!”

Ara raised the key.

She then climbed onto the altar, her eyes sparkling.

“Treasure!”

I’ll have to talk to Seon-ah about it. Show her some educational movies, at least.

Well, thanks to that, we found the relic of gluttony. So that’s a gain.

“But where does it go?”

“Huh?”

Following Ara’s remark, I closely examined the altar too.

As Ara said, there really didn’t seem to be a keyhole.

“It’s not here!”

Cheong also looked around in confusion.

But still, we found nothing.

“Where do we insert the key?”

Brring.

(I don’t know.)

Really.

After just watching that scene, maybe I expected too much.

Eventually, we spent a long time looking for the keyhole.

Still, we couldn’t find it.

“Ah, shall we take a break and then look?”

“Uh.”

“Do you want to keep looking?”

“Yes!”

“Alright. Then Ara will keep looking. I’ll make some snacks.”

“Wow!”

I then took out what had become almost part of our bodies and laid out various things.

And while I was preparing the snacks, I harvested a few floating light orbs outside the room.

I made a rough snack.

After mixing strawberry jam and light orbs, I spread it well on the bread we brought.

I added carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, and finally kangnyuk jerky to enhance the meaty flavor.

“Sandwich!”

Honestly, I’m not sure about the taste.

Should I have left out the kangnyuk jerky?

Since the kids have good appetites, I made a lot of sandwiches. By that time, Ara, Cheong, and the ancient slime still hadn’t found the keyhole.

“Kids, let’s eat some snacks and then continue looking.”

“Ah. At times like this, you really need to eat snacks.”

Ara’s sigh and tone were both annoying and cute, making me laugh without realizing it.

As the kids and I ate the sandwiches, they were tastier than expected.

“Hmm?”

I thought the sweetness mixed with the meaty taste might not go well, but that was a big misunderstanding.

In fact, it paired very well, especially the potentially overwhelming sweetness was neatly countered by the vanilla-like and chocolate-like flavors of the light orbs.

“It’s delicious!”

“It’s yummy!”

Om nom nom.

Seeing everyone eating happily made me proud too.

Anyway, the food made here can’t be tasteless, making a failure would be a skill in itself.

Having eaten diligently, Cheong seemed full and came up to rub against my face.

“I’m sleepy.”

“Cheong, want to take a nap?”

“Yes.”

Cheong nodded sleepily.

Ara immediately got back to work after eating the snacks.

After putting Cheong to sleep, I carefully took out a sleeping bag and placed it before helping Ara.

“Hmm.”

Where could it be?

But at this point, isn’t there a different mechanism?

‘Is there really no hole?’

Could it just open if I place the key on it?

After thinking various thoughts, I decided to just try something silly and took the key from Ara.

“Oh.”

Ara looked at me with expectant eyes.

I felt a bit pressured by her expectations, but I soon held it against the altar.

Nothing happened.

Maybe I need to recite some kind of magical spell.

“Open sesame!”

“Sesame!”

Ara echoed after me.

However, as expected, there was no response.

Squeak.

“Huh?!”

No! There was a reaction! Unbelievable!

Specifically, the key reacted.

The key had a strange texture, similar to that of a slime.

It seemed as if it understood my words…

“Huh?”

Could it be?

Is this key reacting to the ‘Slime Overlord’s’ powers?

Were you a slime too, all along?

With a hint of hope, I spoke to the key.

“Please open.”

“Wow! Even talking to a key is possible for you!

You really are amazing!”

Seeing Ara sincerely admiring me made me feel strangely proud.

But that feeling was brief.

Soon after, the key actually twitched.

“Wow! Oh!”

“Wow!”

Brrong!!

While everyone was startled, Cheong finally woke up.

Then he rubbed his eyes and got up.

“Did you find it?”

“No, not yet. But it seems like it might work.”

Soon, I moved in the direction it seemed the key was pointing.

The key, like a compass, seemed to be moving towards somewhere.

“Here?”

“Wow! You really are amazing!”

The place the key pointed to was the very center of the altar.

When I brought it to the center, the key calmed down.

Why does it stop here?

There’s no place to insert it here?

“Open, please.”

Zzzzap!

When I commanded again, the key spread out like a spider web.

“Whoa!”

“Wahaha!”

I let out a surprised noise.

Ara cheered at the fascinating sight.

The key spread out in all directions, beginning to cover the altar.

At a glance, it felt a bit grotesque.

Ah, if I had to describe it, it looked like the process of opening a Demon Lord’s artifact.

‘No way!’

As I denied it, the key finally covered the entire altar.

Then the center of the altar began to split open.

“Wow.”

“Ohhh!”

“That’s amazing!”

Everyone was mesmerized by the extraordinary sight as the altar finally opened completely.

Zzzurk.

And the key, which had covered the altar in red, returned to its original key form.

“What a fascinating key.”

“Yes! It’s incredible! Who made this?”

Ara, wasn’t it you who made it.

Together with our innocent Ara, we examined the inside of the altar.

It felt like the moment I first discovered Ara.

“Huh?”

But.

Is what’s inside also a slime?

A red slime was contained inside.

It was about the size of Ara’s head.

“This is…!”

Ara also exclaimed with a shocked expression.

Oh, Ara.

Did you finally remember something?

“It’s a pretty hat!”

“Huh?”

A hat?

This?

Anyone would see it as a slime, but Ara called it a hat.

I couldn’t understand it.

But soon, whether it was a hat or not, I realized it wasn’t a slime.

Slosh.

Ara carefully took out the red slime.

But it really wasn’t a slime.

How do I know?

Because an item display appeared.

[Relic of Gluttony (Mythic)]

[A relic imbued with the power of gluttony. It can be worn on the head. It can mimic any headwear item, changing the wearer’s appearance or mimicking any form of headwear.]

– Able to mimic 100% of helmet-type items up to mythic level through item absorption.

– Capable of transforming the wearer’s appearance within a certain ratio.

“Wow.”

Was it really a hat?

Alon, momentarily stunned by the sparkling eyes of Seolrang, let out a soft sigh.

‘I did think about it, though.’

In fact, he remembered the promise he made with Seolrang.

When he made that promise, he had also agreed with the Dragonkin tribe to reconvene in two years.

Still, the reason for his slight panic was that Seolrang seemed more earnest than he had expected.

‘…No, I knew she was sincere back then, too.’

The reason he had told Seolrang to think about it again in two years was mainly twofold.

First, Alon felt he needed to care for Seolrang’s mental state and feared that promising too long a period would disappoint her, so he set a tentative timeline of two years.

Second, he assumed her affection (?) would diminish over time.

The affection Seolrang showed him felt more like familial attachment than romantic feelings.

Alon was already aware of this.

To draw a parallel, it was akin to a young daughter declaring, “When I grow up, I’ll marry Daddy!”

As such, he expected that after about two years, her feelings would subside, and the promise could be gently dismissed.

After all, no matter how much daughters adore their fathers, they gradually grow independent as they mature.

Moreover, while Seolrang was already an adult in the fantasy world, she still seemed young by Alon’s standards two years ago.

‘…To be honest, she doesn’t seem much different now.’

Alon glanced at Seolrang, who was smiling brightly and wrapping her legs around his waist.

Her radiant smile, utterly free from worry, resembled that of a child.

It was the kind of purity that put others at ease.

In other words, it meant she hadn’t matured much emotionally over the past two years.

Lost in thought, Alon hesitated over what to say.

“Seolrang.”

“Huh? Oh! Rine! What brings you here?”

Startled by the voice, Seolrang quickly brightened up and smiled wide.

Rine returned her smile warmly.

“I had something to take care of, so I followed Godfather here.”

“Ah, I see~”

“But Seolrang, judging by what the godfather said, it seems the two years aren’t entirely up yet. Shouldn’t you wait a little longer?”

“Oh, is that so?”

Seolrang tilted her head in confusion.

Not missing the opportunity, Alon interjected.

“Well, there are a few months left.”

“…Um.”

Seolrang’s expression soured momentarily but quickly shifted back to a cheerful one.

“That’s okay! It just means I’ll get an answer in a few months!”

Her tail wagged enthusiastically as her optimism returned.

Seeing her resilience, Alon was momentarily at a loss for words but eventually nodded.

“…Alright, let’s talk again in a few months.”

“Got it, Master!”

For now, he decided to settle for the delay.

***

Shortly after.

Alon and his group moved to Seolrang’s guild.

“Wow! What’s this? It’s so cute!”

As soon as they entered the slightly chilly guild office, a black creature popped out of the pocket on Alon’s chest.

Seolrang’s eyes sparkled at the sight of the black cat.

Thump~!

Before Alon could stop her, Seolrang quickly picked up the cat.

Alon opened his mouth to speak, while Evan couldn’t help but smirk in anticipation of what would happen next.

Just as they expected.

Swish!

The black creature’s entire body was suddenly covered in numerous red eyes.

However—

“Wow! So many eyes now!”

“?”

“?”

Rather than being horrified by the dozens of grotesque eyes that appeared, Seolrang seemed amazed and lifted the creature higher.

Screeeeeech~!!!

The creature opened its mouth to let out a grotesque sound as if it wouldn’t be outdone.

“Wow! It even has a mouth now! Amazing!!!”

Her eyes shone even brighter as she swung the creature around like a toy airplane.

“This… isn’t how it’s supposed to go,” Evan muttered in disbelief.

The black creature, equally bewildered, reverted to its normal form, tilting its head in confusion with slightly trembling eyes.

Screeeeech~!

It let out another scream.

“Ah! Wait a second!”

Seolrang ran off with the creature and soon returned with her arms full of something.

Before long—

“Wow! So cool!”

The black creature had been dressed up in a cute knight doll outfit and was now held up in Seolrang’s hands like a doll.

[……Meow?]

The creature’s round eyes conveyed a sense of utter disbelief at the situation.

It seemed so dumbfounded that it lost even the will to intimidate.

“Do it again! Make all those eyes appear like before!”

[Meow?]

“That was way cooler!”

Her tail wagged excitedly as she cheered.

Watching this scene, Evan murmured, “Seolrang seems to have… a different aesthetic sense than the rest of us. What do you think?”

“…Yeah.”

“Right?”

While the two were left speechless, Rine observed with a satisfied smile.

But it wasn’t long before the black creature began to sweat.

[What’s with all this noise!? …Huh? Pfft, hahahaha! Huh? What is that?!]

Basiliora, who appeared annoyed by the commotion, burst out laughing when he saw the black creature in its knight outfit.

“A talking snake?!”

Seolrang immediately put down the black creature and grabbed Basiliora in its spirit form.

[Kek! Wh-what!?]

Basiliora gasped, coughing as if startled.

However, Seolrang, with a face full of curiosity, stared at him like he was a new toy.

“Should I dress you up too? I’ve got some clothes left over.”

[What nonsense is this!? This great being will not wear clothes meant for some doll play— Wait, hold on!]

Ignoring his protests, Seolrang cheerfully hummed a tune as she began to “decorate” him.

Witnessing the bizarre scene once again, Alon, Evan, and even Rine momentarily lost their words.

***

The next day after arriving at the colony.

“Godfather, I’ll be stepping out for a bit.”

“Understood. How long will it take?”

“Hmm… probably a day or two. Why?”

“If you don’t return within that time, I’ll assume something’s wrong and come to find you.”

Rine paused in her movement.

With a soft smile, she expressed her gratitude before heading out.

Shortly after, Alon also set out for the ruins early in the morning.

‘…I need to ask about what Linisius said and the rites, I suppose.’

As he organized his thoughts—

“Seolrang.”

“What?”

Evan, looking curious, gestured toward the small snake.

“How do you even touch Basiliora?”

“What do you mean, how?”

“Well, Basiliora is in a spirit form.”

Seolrang, as if it was nothing, snapped her fingers and replied, “Well, by passing the Trial of Essence?”

“The Trial of Essence?”

“Yep, with this.”

She showed the gauntlet on her hand and added, “Passing the Trial of Essence grants you abilities, one by one. Only our race can use them, though.”

“That’s quite an impressive item,” Evan admired.

Hearing the conversation, Alon also internally marveled.

While he knew there were secrets hidden in Seolrang’s essence, he hadn’t expected something like this.

“So, you gain a new ability every time you pass a trial?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“How many abilities have you acquired so far?”

“…Five?”

“How many trials are there in total?”

Seolrang counted on her fingers before exclaiming, “Oh, eight!”

“Eight?”

“Yep! But I haven’t passed the sixth trial yet.”

“Why not?”

“Well, the condition is… anger? But I haven’t really had a reason to get angry. According to the essence, this trial is a turning point.”

“A turning point?”

“Yeah, like determining whether I’m qualified to be a king or not… something like that?”

Evan nodded thoughtfully and shrugged.

“Well, even so, you’re taking it easy now, right? You’re already strong enough.”

“Nope.”

“Huh?”

“Why not? I need to get stronger to avenge and protect Master, of course.”

“…The marquis?”

“Yep!”

When Evan glanced at Alon in confusion, he muttered, “Isn’t the marquis already strong enough to not need protection anymore?”

“Even so, I want to protect him!”

Seolrang lifted the black creature high with pride as she declared her determination.

Alon couldn’t help but smile faintly.

Being on the receiving end of someone’s kindness was a rather pleasant feeling.

As they exchanged such lighthearted banter, they continued traversing the desert.

After some time—

“We’ve arrived!”

With Seolrang’s cheerful voice, they finally entered the ruins.

***

Immediately after arriving at the ruins.

As usual, Alon headed straight for the central tower.

[It’s been a while.]

Spotting the Dragonkin tribe, who had been waiting and looking at him, Alon muttered involuntarily.

“…Blue?”

[Ah, so you’re finally starting to see more.]

Unlike before, when he could only see shadows and white outlines, this time Alon could see the blue of the Dragonkin’s eyes.

He stared at the Dragonkin’s eyes in wonder before quickly gathering himself and getting to the point.

“…There’s a lot to discuss after two years. Do we have enough time?”

[Don’t worry. I did expend some effort refining what you left, but there’s plenty of time to talk.]

With that assurance, Alon organized his thoughts and began recounting from two years ago, starting with the observer’s story.

Eventually—

[Wait a moment. Are you saying you didn’t see the past in the end?]

“That’s correct. Instead, I saw an eye.”

[…That’s impossible.]

The Dragonkin tilted its head, baffled.

[Explain the situation in detail.]

Alon described the events in greater detail, from looking into the mirror to the massive eye speaking in a space that resembled the cosmos.

After listening quietly for a while, the Dragonkin tapped its chin thoughtfully and summarized what Alon had said.

[So, in essence, you’re saying that just before you could see the past, a colossal eye blocked it. An eye so enormous it defies imagination.]

“Correct.”

The Dragonkin fell silent, deeply pondering the matter.

After a long while, just as Alon began to wonder, the Dragonkin spoke again.

[Do you remember what I told you about the “black thing” before?]

“…The black thing?”

[Yes, when you asked about it, I said something about earning the favor of a higher god.]

Alon nodded.

“You mentioned something like that, yes.”

The Dragonkin nodded in return.

[At the time, I assumed the black and blue things I mentioned corresponded roughly to that idea.]

“…So, why bring it up now?”

The Dragonkin’s expression grew serious.

[To put it briefly, I believe I made an error in my assumptions.]

“…You misinterpreted the information?”

[Correct. The ability of the Bronze Mirror to record history is absolute, as you might have heard from the observer. Interfering with the mirror, even for the “black” or “blue” I previously thought of, should be impossible.]

“…Is tampering with the mirror really that difficult?”

[The black and blue entities I initially thought of were beings who, despite losing their names, managed to seal more than half the power of the black ones in their battle. They are among the top five gods.]

After a pause, the Dragonkin added, [Yet even they cannot interfere with the Bronze Mirror’s power.]

“Why not?”

[Because the Bronze Mirror predates even us. For anyone to interfere with an artifact from that era without issue…]

The Dragonkin let out a hollow laugh.

[…would mean they are far higher beings than the five gods of the past.]

The words left an ominous weight in the air.

Round 282

Prev | TOC | Next

Pentagon, USA.

Nathan had the opportunity to meet one of the generals and a level 8 Awakener, Andrew, after a long time.

Andrew Tate.

He is known as the longest-serving active Awakener in the United States.

The achievements and anecdotes about him could fill five volumes of books.

Initially a civilian Awakener, he became a soldier dedicated to his country and has been respected by everyone for his 20 years of service.

“Is the information I’ve confirmed accurate?”

“General, are you cutting to the chase without even a greeting?”

Although Nathan, the head of the intelligence, held a higher rank, he showed respect due to the aforementioned facts.

Moreover, the two had a long-standing relationship.

Thus, they were informal with each other in private settings.

“Try to understand my position a little. So, is it true or not?”

A secret meeting room located in the deepest part of the Pentagon.

Conversations held here were never to be discussed elsewhere.

In fact, there was an unwritten rule that conversations here must be forgotten once they leave this room.

“I’m not sure what information it is, but if my guess is correct…”

Gulp.

The great general Andrew swallowed dryly as he intently watched Nathan’s lips.

Following such a reaction, Nathan slowly continued,

“It’s probably correct.”

“What do you mean it’s probably correct?”

“I don’t know either. You’ll have to share the information you’ve gathered with me first, so I can confirm.”

“Hmm.”

Andrew pondered.

If the information he had come across was something even Nathan was unaware of, it could be a significant risk.

In the modern age of information, those who preemptively obtain information have the advantage.

And revealing such information to Nathan, who could be considered the utmost expert, required a lot of resolution.

“It’s about Kyler Lucas.”

“I’ve vaguely heard that he has settled somewhere other than the USA.”

Eventually, Andrew revealed everything.

At the same time, Nathan maintained a poker face, but internally he breathed a sigh of relief.

‘Thankfully, it’s not about Emily’s level 8 Awakening.’

Emily’s level 8 Awakening would be considered a monumental event even in the United States, a superpower in terms of awakenings.

She would receive tremendous attention as a talent who will lead the future.

However, Nathan wished his niece would not attract such attention.

Emily, who had never lived an ordinary life, was finally recovering and meeting her biological father for the first time.

It seemed that the foundations for a normal life were finally being laid for her.

‘Of course, even that can hardly be called ordinary.’

He hoped at least she could experience the warmth of family and the preciousness of everyday life.

“Nathan, we have known each other for a whopping 30 years. Back then, both of us were just starting out.”

Interpreting Nathan’s silence differently, Andrew hurriedly spoke up.

“We’ve been through a lot over the years. Helping each other, arguing, sometimes even conflicting. But I would like you to be honest with me in this matter.”

“What would you like to do, General?”

“What?”

“Putting aside whether the information is true or not, what do you want to do about Kyler Lucas?”

Faced with Nathan’s question, Andrew wore a seriously grave expression.

“We need to capture him.”

“Haven’t we failed repeatedly already? The losses have been tremendous. That’s why the higher-ups have told us to tone down our response.”

“We can’t just stand by and watch.”

“The damage caused by Kyler is astronomical. Even so, the damage has approached zero since we stopped provoking him first.”

“But again, we can’t just stand by. The things he has done in the past don’t just disappear.”

Nathan internally felt a headache coming on due to Andrew’s stubbornness, but he did not show it.

“Our intelligence agency has concluded that the information you brought is correct.”

“Of course!”

“However, we still haven’t pinpointed where he has settled. If that were possible, we could have captured him by now.”

“Hmm.”

The truth was that all of this was possible only with Nathan’s secret cooperation, but Nathan pretended not to know and brazenly acted.

“Still, now that he’s not running away and staying in one place, it’ll be different than before.”

“Are you sure?”

“Of course. The reason he was difficult to catch was because of his unparalleled elusiveness. If he has settled in one place? I guarantee we can catch him.”

Really?

Nathan already knew where Kyler had settled.

And that place was not one anyone could just wander into; it was a location where one could potentially stay inside for a lifetime without ever needing to come out.

‘With luxurious meals to boot.’

Furthermore, now his daughter Emily would also be joining him.

Kyler had nothing more to wish for.

“I hope, General, that you’ve settled your lifelong debts.”

“Indeed.”

“We in the intelligence agency will keep you informed as soon as we receive any updates.”

“Please do.”

With that, the conversation concluded.

Andrew was the first to rise from his seat.

Remaining behind, Nathan quietly took out a cigarette and lit it.

“Huh.”

His face, obscured by smoke, left a faint smile.

***

After enjoying the sea and gradually getting used to the dungeon, Kyler and his daughter had started moving around on their own.

Especially since Kyler couldn’t leave, he seemed eager to find things to do.

‘A level 9 Awakener, no less.’

Using a level 9 Awakener as labor, could he be the true alpha male of this era?

Pondering this nonsense, he finished his breakfast and stood up.

“We’ll go to the Sky Island this afternoon.”

“Sky Island?”

“There’s one place I haven’t introduced yet, right? That’s Sky Island.”

“Could it really be an island floating in the sky?”

“See for yourself.”

At my words, Kyler seemed incredulous, while Emily simply looked excited.

“Sky Island! Ara, Cheong, have you guys been there too?”

“Of course!”

“It’s soooo high up!”

Cheong gave a rare big reaction, even standing on her tiptoes.

At this, Emily grabbed Cheong and rubbed her cheeks.

“Our Cheong!”

“It tickles, sister.”

“I want to rub-rub too!”

Watching the children getting along so well, I decided to catch up on some delayed work until the afternoon.

Check the fields, inspect the storeroom, make sure the soybean paste, soy sauce, and chili paste were fermenting well, and prepare to plant new crops for the waning winter…

Fortunately, having many family members meant that the division of labor was well established.

Thanks to that, I just had to do a final check.

“Yeah, good job.”

-Hehe.

Especially since the Kkumuris, despite appearing clueless, were actually quite proficient at their tasks.

They had even learned to mark numbers recently. Clever kids.

“This is how you need to water it.”

“Like this?”

“Yes. You’re doing well, Emily.”

Nearby, the children were whispering to each other during a mini farm experience.

I stretched luxuriously while watching them contentedly.

“Ahhh! Shall we head up now?”

“It’s an adventure!”

Out of nowhere, Ara brandished a key high.

The key was red, and I initially thought it was rusted, but it turned out that was its actual color.

‘I can’t figure out what it’s made of.’

It had a peculiar texture.

Solid, yet almost like a liquid?

Yes, like slime…

‘Could it be a key made of slime?!’

…probably not.

It was a bit unsettling.

Then, Emily approached me quietly.

“Uncle.”

“Huh?”

“I completed the quest!”

“What? When?!”

What was going on?

Wasn’t the quest to swing a mana sword ten thousand times?

Ten thousand times. Even a thousand would be tough, but this was ten times that number.

And she had received the quest just two days ago.

Plus, she had been with us all day, sightseeing and playing.

How in the world did she complete the quest in the meantime?

“I swung mana intermittently.”

“Swung mana?”

“Yes! I imagined the sword with mana, held it in my hand, and swung it. While playing, while moving!”

Huh, huh, huh.

What was she talking about?

Although I was only a level 3 Awakener, and actually closer to a level 1, not even a combat Awakener, I could guess how absurd Emily’s claim was.

‘Imagined a sword with mana and held it?’

But if the quest was completed, that meant it was recognized.

That meant Emily truly imagined a sword with mana and created it.

Manifestation of mana into a tangible form through mental imaging.

I’m sure I studied and learned about this before awakening.

Of course, I couldn’t use it.

Such abilities were said to be possible for Awakeners of at least level 5 or 6, who had at least five years of experience using mana.

“Can you show me?”

“Yes.”

Emily quickly formed something in her hand, but it was hard to see.

“I can’t keep it up for long. I need to rest after about 100 swings to be able to do it again.”

Even that was incredible.

Ah, no wonder she’s not just any sword master.

I had forgotten for a moment due to her being a level 8 Awakener, but Emily’s abilities were also overpowered.

“Have you told your dad?”

“No, not yet.”

At the moment, Kyler was busy looking for land to live on with Emily.

He said they could always build another house, but he was being cautious not to cause any trouble.

It really didn’t matter.

If they didn’t like the house, they could just build another one.

“Hmm, maybe you should tell your dad too?”

“Yes! Of course. Oh, and after completing the quest, I feel like my powers have gotten stronger. They said I can now unleash sword winds, but I’m not quite sure what that means yet.”

“Heh, heh, heh.”

A hero has emerged!

I couldn’t help but break out into a sweat and smiled at Emily.

“Emily, we’re friends, right?”

“Huh? Why do you say that all of a sudden? Uncle, you’re my lifesaver!”

“Ha ha ha! Yes! That’s right! Exactly.”

Phew!

Hearing her confirm it again was somewhat reassuring.

But why did I feel relieved?

I haven’t done anything wrong, have I?

“And I got another quest.”

“Oh, is it finally a hunting quest this time?”

“No? It’s to steal something?”

“Huh? Steal something?”

What a peculiar quest.

Steal something? Suddenly? And a hero, at that?

Just then, Kyler returned.

He relayed the conversation he had just heard.

Kyler listened quietly and soon began to give detailed advice.

Unlike me, who was initially shocked and excited, he remained his usual self.

‘Indeed, one of only seven level 9 Awakeners in the world!’

Respectable.

How can he not be surprised? Especially since it’s his own daughter?

Hehe.

“Huh?”

But for a moment, I saw it.

A doting smile lingered on Kyler’s lips before disappearing.

Kyler…

You’re just another typical doting father after all.

“Hmm, that quest to steal something is unusual.”

“Indeed. Emily, can you tell us what this item is?”

“Just a moment!”

Emily intently scanned the air, seemingly reading the quest.

“Um, it says to steal any one of the relics of the Seven Sins!”

“Aha! The relics of the Seven Sins.”

Typical hero quest.

Not ordinary at all.

Understanding a bit more now that it’s about stealing items like the relics of the Seven Sins.

‘The relics of the Seven Sins?’

I glanced briefly at Ara.

Then, Ara, staring blankly back at me, exclaimed,

“Wow! We’ve got a gift for Emily!”

Are you sure it’s okay to give that away so easily, Ara?

I don’t know.

For now.

I need to find out what the Relic of Gluttony is all about.

“Who is that person?”

“Did he just talk to Cecil?”

“I’ve never seen him before, but he’s wearing an invigilator’s armband…”

Among the first-year academy students, who were at the age of peak curiosity, my sudden appearance as an unfamiliar figure quickly stirred up a heated reaction.

“He looks really suspicious…”

“Yeah, yeah, it feels like he’s up to something.”

“Can he even see anything with his eyes open like that?”

Of course, half of these reactions were filled with malicious judgments about my appearance.

Seriously, these brats only judge based on looks instead of seeing what’s inside.

“Hmm, I feel like I’ve seen him somewhere before…”

“Yeah, where could it have been?”

“If he were a noble I met with my father, there’s no way I wouldn’t remember him.”

Meanwhile, a few students who were obviously noble children tilted their heads in confusion and examined me closely, but none of them were able to pinpoint my identity.

Well, even though my name had become famous enough to receive multiple letters daily, not much about me was publicly known, so it made sense.

“Enough chatter, everyone, focus.”

Just as the students’ excessive curiosity was starting to become an annoyance, a sharp voice rang through the exam hall.

“The person standing before you is Sir Whitney, who will be supervising this midterm exam.”

A strict-looking female teacher, likely their homeroom teacher, had just opened her mouth while scowling.

“He is a skilled white mage who recently defeated black mages in that unfortunate incident and was awarded a certificate of gratitude by the Imperial family.”

At those words, the students who had been whispering about me fell silent, and their gazes toward me shifted.

I appreciated the change in attitude, but that kind of high praise was a bit burdensome.

It was actually Runiel who defeated the black mages—I had only provided her with vision through a magical artifact I received from Parsha and kidnapped the saintess.

“In other words, you should abandon any thoughts of cheating or trying to cut corners.”

The female teacher added that statement with a chilly smile, reinforcing my exaggerated reputation.

“Sir Whitney, if you detect any suspicious behavior, you may use force immediately.”

“Mm, I’ll have to think about that.”

Even though I had been diligently training in white magic, it was fundamentally focused on support and healing rather than offense, making aggressive action difficult.

Of course, if it were the high-ranking members of ‘Lumen Ordo’ (The Order of Light), which included my father and other top white mages, it would be a different story.

For the record, I hadn’t even been able to join ‘Lumen Ordo’ yet because my white magic was still deemed subpar.

“My white magic specializes in healing and defense, not harming others.”

“…Is that so?”

“Ah, of course, if it’s a black mage, that’s a different story.”

To prevent any embarrassing misunderstandings, I added a small disclaimer.

“…But we can’t treat students like black mages, can we? Haha.”

“Ah… Well, that’s true. Please go easy on those brats.”

Fortunately, the female teacher seemed convinced by my explanation and nodded, though she soon turned back toward the students with a stern expression.

“Now, let’s put an end to the idle talk and get to the main event.”

“Assistants, activate the magic circle.”

As she snapped her fingers, the assistants waiting in the back stepped forward.

Whooosh…

The massive magic circle drawn in the center of the exam hall, which was as large as a sports field, began to glow ominously.

“…Wait a minute.”

Watching this unfold, I suddenly doubted my own eyes and urgently turned to the female teacher.

‘This is… a summoning ritual used by black mages?’

Could this be one of those classic academy clichés where an unexpected crisis always happens during an exam?

If so, this was bad. I had to stop the ritual immediately—

“As expected, you recognized it right away.”

“Huh?”

“It was quite difficult to set that up. Hehe.”

Oh no.

Was this actually another classic trope, where at least one member of the faculty was secretly colluding with the enemies?

“Attention, everyone. The magic circle currently activated is the one used by black mages to summon monsters.”

“…?”

“As you all know, black magic is a forbidden practice punishable by death, regardless of one’s status or position.”

Before I could spiral into further misunderstanding, the female teacher turned to the students and began explaining in a loud voice.

“However, given the recent incident and the unsettling movements of black mages, the Emperor personally sought approval from the church to grant a special exemption for this test.”

Judging by the determined and focused expressions on the students’ faces, they had been informed about this in advance.

That was a relief.

At least I didn’t look like some kind of nepotistic hire in front of them.

“In short, this exam will test how efficiently you can subdue and neutralize monsters controlled by black mages.”

Well, considering the academy’s emphasis on hands-on learning, this was something they could do as long as they had the necessary approval.

“As you’ve studied throughout the semester, monsters are among the most unpredictable and dangerous of summoned creatures.

Even if you’ve memorized their weaknesses and countermeasures in advance, they will still be challenging opponents for you.”

But… was it really okay to have first-year students, who had no real combat experience, face monsters already?

“If anyone is rendered unable to fight, the faculty and Sir Whitney will step in immediately. So even if you fail, at the very least, you won’t have to worry about dying.”

Ah, so that was the plan.

“Of course, we won’t intervene for minor injuries like a broken arm, so brace yourselves.”

Now I understood why Lady Meredia sent me as an examiner.

Maybe this was her way of being considerate.

“That concludes the briefing. Group leaders, take command of your teams and prepare for battle.”

As I chuckled wryly at the ever-tsundere Lady Meredia, the students quickly split into their designated groups upon the teacher’s command.

Crackle…

At that moment, ominous smoke billowed from the magic circle on the ground, rapidly filling the entire exam hall.

Boom…!

Then, in the blink of an eye, walls shot up from the floor, forming a massive labyrinth that trapped the smoke inside.

“Eek.”

“Ugh…”

As the eerie gazes began to seep out from the smoke escaping the entrance of the hastily constructed dungeon, murmurs of fear started spreading among the students.

“One more thing to keep in mind: monsters primarily feed on fear. If you let fear consume you now, you might end up as the hunted instead of the hunter.”

The female teacher, observing the students, spoke in a calm tone before turning her head toward me with a subtle question.

“What do you think, Sir Whitney? These may be the lowest-ranking among the monsters summoned by black mages, but still, they look quite convincing, don’t they?”

“Ahaha…”

All I could do in response was offer a stiff smile.

…This is terrifying, seriously.

Because, contrary to public perception, I was nothing but a fraud with zero real combat experience.

This was my first time seeing grotesque monsters outside of a game.

-What a delicious-looking soul…

-So many young souls gathered here…

To make matters worse, I felt as if I could hear the sinister murmurs of the monsters coming from the labyrinth entrance, which resembled a gaping maw.

-That black-haired girl over there looks especially tasty…

-But she seems strong… Let’s go after the weaker ones first…

-Wait a second, what the hell is going on?

-Where is the summoner who called us?

-Strange… I sense a familiar presence here…

Why did it feel like I could actually understand what the monsters were saying?

****

“M-my legs won’t move…”

“H-hiiik!”

“M-Mom…”

While I was caught off guard by the sudden ability to hear the monsters’ language, the midterm exam proceeded smoothly without any major incidents.

“Team A, eliminated. Assistants, cut off the mana supply.”

The reason no accidents occurred was that the faculty maintained an iron grip on the situation with their well-coordinated responses.

“I distinctly told you not to succumb to fear.”

“Kroooooar!”

“Even though they may have grotesque appearances and foreign powers, they are still just summoned creatures at their core.”

The moment students lost their will to fight and fell into panic, the mana flow to the magic circle was cut off, and a standby teacher immediately intervened inside the labyrinth.

For reference, all the academy faculty members present at the exam site, including the strict female teacher leading the students, were seasoned combat veterans.

“Kyieeeeeek!”

“If you strike their weak points, they scream and vanish just like any other monster.”

Thanks to this, the lower-class monsters, which had been rampaging after feeding on the fear of the losers, were unable to resist and were forcefully unsummoned.

-T-that was… a sensitive spot…

“…O”

For some reason, I could understand what the monsters were saying, and it was enough to make me feel a little sorry for them.

“Hmph, how disgraceful.”

“…?”

“To think they’d be cowering before such low-level monsters—it’s absolutely laughable.”

As I stood there awkwardly, having had no reason to intervene thanks to the faculty’s efficiency, a refined yet arrogant voice made me turn my head in curiosity.

“I didn’t expect you to pretend not to know me so blatantly.”

“Who?”

“Haven’t you read the letter my father sent?”

Among the noble students who had been whispering about recognizing me, a particularly proud-looking young lady had been staring at me intently.

Now, she was speaking to me as if we were acquainted.

“I am Adele Felgrave, the second daughter of Marquess Felgrave. Do you still not recognize me?”

“Ah…”

“Hehe, well, as long as you remember now, it’s fine.”

I had been utterly clueless about her identity until she formally introduced herself in a typical aristocratic manner.

Then, it hit me.

‘She was right below Cecil on the list of candidates for the promising student selection exam.’

And she also belonged to one of the most prestigious noble families, as evident from the wedding invitations I had spent sleepless nights sorting through and burning.

“So, when will you give me an answer?”

“……”

“My father isn’t a very patient man, you know. You should know better than to play hard to get for too long.”

She was looking at me with a pouting yet expectant expression, as if convinced that I would naturally accept the proposal.

But from my perspective as someone who retained memories of a past life, there was no way I would get involved with a kid who was only three or four years younger than me.

“Lady Adele, I’m sorry, but I already have a fiancée.”

“…What?”

“Rather than someone like me, wouldn’t it be better for you to find a more charming partner of your own age?”

Besides, if I had responded to even one of those letters, I would have been buried beneath the garden of a certain duchess with mesmerizing eyes by now.

“I heard rumors that Lady Meredia is merely using you.”

“……”

“You should realize that this is your last chance to escape your inevitable downfall.”

However, it seemed that this audacious young lady had completely misunderstood my words.

If she wasn’t careful, she and her entire family could end up buried in the duchy’s garden, but how should I phrase it to make her understand?

“If you’re worried about the duchess’s influence, there’s no need. You may not know this, but the Felgrave Marquisate is a distinguished lineage of the Magic Tower.”

“Hmm…”

“And my father holds the highest rank among the tower lords. No matter how powerful the Embergreen Duchy is, they wouldn’t dare act recklessly against us.”

Listening to her, I could tell she had more confidence than those other noble families who had blindly sent wedding invitations, either due to lack of information or out of reckless defiance of the duchess.

The problem was that, according to my memory, the Magic Tower would soon be turned upside down due to a black magic-related scandal, leading to a massive restructuring.

And in the end, if I betrayed Lady Meredia and she fell into darkness, both the Imperial Court and the Magic Tower would be destroyed by her, rendering this proposal meaningless to me.

“Hmm. Ahem!”

As I maintained an uncomfortable expression, trying to figure out how to extricate myself, the young lady, who had been carefully watching my reaction, suddenly cleared her throat loudly.

“Ah, Lady Adele! Come to think of it, how did your application for the promising candidates’ selection go?”

“B-but only top-ranking students are even allowed to apply for that in the first place!”

“I didn’t even qualify to apply!”

Her followers, who had been hesitating nearby, suddenly swarmed in, awkwardly posing what were clearly staged questions.

“Hehe. Prepare to be amazed. I was ranked second on the candidate list!”

“W-wow!”

“That’s incredible!”

“Oh, and by the way, this isn’t something students are supposed to know, so keep it to yourselves!”

At the center of it all, Lady Adele grinned smugly as she revealed confidential academy information, sneaking glances at me.

…I was getting secondhand embarrassment just watching this.

Even though she was a noble debutante, she was still just a kid—her intentions were far too obvious.

But more than that, I already knew exactly who the first-ranked candidate was, so I wasn’t particularly impressed.

“B-Team, pass!”

“…Huh?”

“Impressive. A new first-year record… no, even including second-years, it’s an all-time record.”

At that moment, the female teacher, who rarely showed surprise, exclaimed in an astonished voice.

Seizing the opportunity, I smiled quietly and walked toward the entrance.

“Haha. Cecil, you never fail to meet my expectations.”

“…Ugh, whatever.”

As expected of the top-ranked candidate, Cecil simply responded coldly and kept walking, but I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride.

“I-I could do that too…!”

“Ha, here we go again.”

As I scratched my head awkwardly, I overheard the conversation between the noble lady who had been pestering me and Cecil.

“Aren’t you tired of this? Seriously…”

“Y-you! How dare you speak to me like that—”

“You’re the one who keeps picking fights with me, Lady Adele.”

As I listened in, it became clear that the two had the classic rival dynamic that always appeared in academy-related stories.

“…Just leave me alone. I’m begging you.”

“Ugh…”

“I already have enough to worry about these days.”

Judging by the tone of their conversation and the number of followers each had (in Cecil’s case, it seemed more like a friend), it was easy to tell which of them was at a disadvantage.

“Sir Whitney. After watching the A-Team and B-Team’s exams, do you have a grasp of things now?”

“Ah, yes.”

“Then please supervise the C-Team and D-Team’s exams.”

Feeling pleased with the situation, I followed the female teacher toward the labyrinth, raising my voice as I spoke.

“I’ll only be satisfied if the remaining students perform at least as well as B-Team did. Haha…”

“Ugh.”

I felt a little bad for the Marquis’s daughter, who was now trembling with frustration behind me, but sometimes, accepting reality quickly was a virtue in life.

Especially when her opponent was our Cecil—there was no helping it.

*****

“Ah, Lady Adele, are you alright?”

As Whitney disappeared into the labyrinth with a faint chuckle, Adele’s followers nervously checked her expression and began to speak.

“Normally, someone from his background wouldn’t even be able to talk to you, but he has absolutely no manners.”

“Exactly! And he looks so suspicious, too. Maybe this is actually a good thing…”

However, Adele Felgrave paid no attention to their words.

Her cold gaze remained fixed on the labyrinth where Whitney had entered.

“…So that’s how you want to play it.”

Initially, she had simply been following her father’s covert orders to approach Whitney.

But now, her wounded pride had fully taken over.

“Fine, then I’ll just have to show him my power.”

She quietly ran her fingers over the pendant hanging around her neck, a gift from her father meant to be used only in emergencies.

Then, with a chilling smile, she whispered.

“Don’t be too shocked when you see what I can do. Hehe.”

The moment she infused mana into the pendant—

Wooooooong…

The magic circle inside the labyrinth emitted a subtle vibration and darkened ominously.

“C-Team and D-Team, enter.”

“…Breaking records? I’ll do it as many times as necessary.”

Brimming with confidence, she stepped into the labyrinth with her team.

And yet, no one noticed the small anomaly that had just occurred.

The territory of the Luxibl Principality, Caslot.

“Ha—still the same.”

Reinhardt, one of Caliban’s Five Swords, murmured as he observed the ever-bustling scenery of Caslot.

“Captain, we must move quickly.”

“Ah, right.”

A woman who stood about two heads shorter than Reinhardt, Elise, who also served as the vice-captain of Reinhardt’s knights, the Sioran Order, spoke sharply.

“Please, don’t run away again.”

“I told you I wouldn’t run.”

“You said the same last time and still ran off, didn’t you?”

“That was due to circumstances—”

“Regardless, this time, it’s absolutely unacceptable.”

Despite her small stature, she exuded an intimidating aura, firing off words rapidly.

Reinhardt scratched his head and replied.

“Don’t worry. No matter how reckless I may seem, I wouldn’t disgrace myself as an envoy of Caliban.”

“At least you still have some sense left, thankfully.”

“…What do you think I am?”

“If you run off again, I’ll have to ask the Solar Knights’ captain for help.”

The Solar Knights.

At those words, Reinhardt involuntarily frowned.

“That’s a bit much, isn’t it?”

“Judging by your expression, that seems accurate.”

“Ha—”

A deep sigh escaped him.

Just thinking about that man made Reinhardt’s head spin.

“You know how insane it gets being around him, don’t you?”

“…Hmm.”

“If you even mention magic, it’s Marquis Palatio this, magic items, Marquis Palatio that, or anything remotely magical—he’ll invoke his name and spend an hour extolling his virtues!”

“Please stop talking.”

“I can’t help but get more annoyed! That guy has gotten even stronger, and now sparring with him is nearly impossible!”

As if he were about to burst, Reinhardt pounded his chest.

Watching him, Elise nodded.

“True, even when we were just talking about statues, he suddenly started praising Marquis Palatio—it was shocking.”

“Exactly! I nearly lost my mind, too.”

“Still, that’s why it’s better to send you. If I put it like this, you definitely won’t run away.”

“…You’re really too much.”

“Let’s go already.”

Elise turned on her small heels and walked briskly ahead.

Watching her retreating figure, Reinhardt shook his head in resignation and followed her toward the royal castle.

“It’s surprising, though. I didn’t expect the king to eliminate those corrupt factions and restore royal authority.”

“I feel the same. I thought he was just an idealistic figurehead. But I heard he struck a deal.”

“A deal?”

“Yes, thanks to that, Luxibl no longer venerates the Holy Kingdom of Rosario as its state religion. Instead, they worship another deity.”

“Another deity?”

Reinhardt was puzzled.

“Well, I don’t pray to gods myself, but is that even allowed?”

“Rosario hardly cared about Luxibl anyway, so they probably won’t do much. Though they might feel offended.”

“So, which deity are they worshiping now?”

After a brief silence, Elise replied to Reinhardt’s question.

“Um, I think it’s someone called ‘Kalanon, the Lightning Receiver.'”

“Kalanon, the Lightning Receiver?”

“Yes. Oh, look over there. That’s their statue.”

As they passed through the square, Elise pointed to the center.

Following her gaze, Reinhardt saw a towering statue.

“Huh?”

The statue looked oddly familiar to Reinhardt.

“They say they now worship that deity.”

“…That’s Kalanon, the Lightning Receiver?”

“Yes, apparently so.”

He stopped in his tracks and stared blankly at the statue.

The statue depicted a man in a dark coat, grasping lightning. Though the face was featureless,

Reinhardt instinctively associated it with someone he knew.

No, it wasn’t just a resemblance—the face was erased, but the figure unmistakably resembled that person.

It was Marquis Palatio.

And there was only one person who could orchestrate something like this.

“…Elise.”

“Yes?”

“Was the one who made the deal with Luxibl… Deus Macalian?”

It could only be that man—

“No? Why would you think that?”

Wait, no?

“Then why did you bring it up all of a sudden?”

Leaving Elise’s puzzled expression behind, Reinhardt could only stare at the statue with a perplexed look.

“…What in the world is this…?”

***

At that moment.

“Luxibl changed its state religion?”

“Yes, to Kalanon, the Lightning Receiver, apparently.”

“…Can a state religion be changed so easily?”

“I’m not entirely sure, but that’s what I heard.”

On the first night of their desert crossing with the caravan,

Alon heard the news from Evan.

“…But I’ve never heard of a god named Kalanon, the Lightning Receiver. What kind of deity is that?”

“I’ve never heard of it either.”

[Hmm, I think I might have heard of it before.]

“You have?”

When Alon asked, the small snake nodded.

[Though it was a long time ago, so I don’t remember well. Still, the name isn’t entirely unfamiliar.]

“So, you don’t really know either. Typical snake brain.”

Evan seized the chance to mock Basiliora.

[You insolent human!]

“Well, you’re just a snake.”

[I am a god!]

“Then why can’t you beat me?”

[Th-that’s because yesterday, luck wasn’t on my side!]

As their conversation shifted to the peculiar board game they’d played the previous night, their voices naturally grew louder.

“Life sure has gotten noisier these days.”

Alon mused, feeling oddly nostalgic for the silence of the past.

Still, he shrugged—it was better to have some liveliness than to dwell in solitude.

Just then—

“Godfather.”

“Yes?”

“Kalanon, the Lightning Receiver, seems to be a native deity of the Thunder Serpent Tribe.”

“Of the Thunder Serpent Tribe?”

“Yes.”

While riding in the carriage, Rine shared new information.

“So, does that mean the Luxibl Principality now worships the Thunder Serpent Tribe’s native god?”

“Hmm, based on the story, that seems to be the case?”

“…What a strange turn of events.”

Alon wore a curious expression.

“Would you like me to look into it further, Godfather?”

After a brief moment of contemplation, Alon shook his head.

“No, there’s no need for that.”

Regardless of why Luxibl Principality started believing in Kalanon, it wasn’t particularly important to him.

“Understood, Godfather.”

Rine immediately accepted his response and handed him something.

“Here, have this.”

“A sweet potato?”

“Yes. I prepared it in advance for you, Godfather.”

It was a perfectly cooked sweet potato, peeled just enough at the top for easy eating.

“…Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.”

Rine smiled sweetly, clearly pleased.

As Alon accepted the sweet potato, he couldn’t help but feel slightly burdened despite his neutral expression.

After all, during their week-long journey, Rine had been taking care of him with remarkable diligence.

…Perhaps excessively so.

‘From preparing water for me to wash with as soon as I wake up, to personally making breakfast, lunch, and dinner… and even answering any questions I have immediately.’

Not to mention, if Alon mentioned feeling hot, she would bring out a cooling magic tool. She even managed to cook sweet potatoes over the fire without burning a single spot.

“…It’s delicious.”

“Thank you, Godfather. I’m happy you like it.”

Rine smiled again, her demeanor warm and cheerful.

Yet, despite her calling him ‘Godfather,’ Alon felt as if he were being doted on by an older sister.

“Please don’t hesitate to ask me for anything, Godfather. I’ll do whatever I can to help you.”

“…Thanks.”

“It’s nothing. You’re my one and only Godfather, after all.”

As Rine’s voice, melodic like a song, flowed, Alon chewed on the sweet potato.

It was still as sweet as ever.

***

A few days later, as Alon continued his desert crossing, he halted the carriage in response to the blaring of an alarm and stepped outside.

“That’s a lot of them.”

“Indeed, there are many.”

They had encountered a group of desert bandits.

It seemed like a substantial number.

“Looks like a new bandit gang has formed?”

“Bandit gangs naturally form over time, after all.”

“…Still, they seem more numerous than the Crimson Sand Bandits.”

Alon scanned the horizon.

The cloud of sand forming in the distance didn’t bode well.

“…There must be at least several hundred of them.”

“Indeed.”

Even if they eliminated the Crimson Sand Bandits, the idea of completely eradicating banditry in such a place was impossible.

That thought lingered for only a moment.

“Why don’t you show them, Marquis?”

“Shouldn’t you, as the escort, handle this?”

“Come on, how could I take on all of them by myself?”

“…You’re really doubting yourself now?”

“Well, I’m more of the ‘support type,’ you know.”

As Alon pondered what that even meant, he reluctantly prepared to step forward.

However—

“Godfather, I’ll handle this.”

“…You?”

“Yes. Please wait a moment.”

Rine, blocking his way with her usual smile, stepped forward.

As the bandits came into clearer view—

Kiiiiiing!

Rine’s voice resonated faintly, and above her head, a massive golden eye resembling a hologram appeared.

A haloed, radiant eye.

And then—

Pfft!

A short, piercing sound accompanied a golden cylindrical beam shooting out.

The beam split into dozens of strands, piercing through the approaching bandits in an instant.

It all took less than a minute.

The once-expanding cloud of dust on the horizon was now gone.

The bandits, pierced by the golden beams, were left tangled in a massive jungle-gym-like formation.

The previously tense merchants and mercenaries fell silent in shock.

Amidst the stunned silence, Rine calmly retrieved the golden beam and turned back.

“I’ve taken care of it, Godfather.”

She smiled her usual serene smile, her eyes twinkling playfully.

“…I see. But—what.”

“Yes?”

“…How did you do that?”

Alon, who had witnessed the entire process alongside Evan, couldn’t help but ask.

Though he knew from their past battles with Kylas that Rine had combat abilities,

…he hadn’t imagined anything like this.

“It’s all thanks to the artifact you gave me, Godfather.”

“…Something I gave you?”

“Yes.”

“…The Traveler’s Eye?”

“Yes. Though I’m still not fully accustomed to it, I’m starting to get the hang of it, Godfather.”

Alon slowly raised his head to look at the massive eye hovering behind Rine.

“That’s… the Traveler’s Eye?”

It looked completely different from what he had imagined.

‘What… is that…?’

A strange sense of fear crept over Alon’s entire body.

***

A week later, Alon and his party finally arrived at the colony.

And—

“Master!”

The moment they arrived, they were greeted by Seolrang, who ran straight to Alon.

“It’s been a while!”

“…Indeed, it has.”

Seolrang clung to him like a snake, wrapping her legs around his waist as she greeted him enthusiastically.

“Now, will you give me an answer!?”

“…Answer?”

With a radiant smile, she asked—

“It’s been two years! Are we getting married now?!”

“Ah.”

Faced with her pure and direct question, Alon could only let out a groan of exasperation.

“Wow, the academy really hasn’t changed at all.”

“…Pardon?”

After finishing Sasha’s introduction, which must have been nostalgic for Pierre, we stepped inside the academy. The familiar scenery came into view.

“I’m actually a graduate of the academy myself. Haha.”

I hadn’t taken on any particular role, nor did I have any close friends. But now, looking back, those memories felt incredibly precious, especially compared to my past life, where I had been confined to a hospital room.

“So, the reason you requested my guidance…?”

As I indulged in those memories and briefly zoned out, Pierre, who had fallen silent for a while, suddenly spoke in a voice thick with emotion.

“Did you just need an excuse to call me out?”

“…I like how quickly you get to the point, Pierre.”

From what I could see, Pierre, unlike his sister Sasha, who lacked a bit of awareness, seemed to be quite sharp.

“To be honest, I’m already familiar with the academy, so I don’t need an attendant or a guide. But despite that, the reason I insisted on bringing Sasha was…”

“…To show me this sight, wasn’t it?”

“Once again, you got it right. Haha.”

Pierre mumbled to himself as he looked at Sasha, who was shedding so many tears that she seemed downright miserable. Clenching his teeth, he continued.

“Recently, I noticed that the amount of money Sasha has been sending to our family has increased exponentially.”

“That’s right.”

“I also know full well that it’s not the kind of money one can earn just from odd jobs.”

Hearing him speak while clenching his fists confirmed my suspicion—Sasha’s family situation must be quite dire.

“No matter how many times I asked what she was doing, all I got in return were letters saying she was doing well.”

“My, how admirable.”

Without thinking, I murmured as I gazed at Sasha with a look of admiration.

“But despite the reassuring words, her letters were always stained with tears.”

“Well, Sasha does cry rather easily, doesn’t she?”

I tried to ease the mood with a gentle smile at Pierre, whose voice trembled as he finished speaking.

“…Let me ask just one thing.”

However, Pierre’s face only grew even paler as he took a deep breath and then threw the question at me.

“What exactly is my sister doing?”

Sasha’s usual duties? Excluding the secret missions she had been forced into recently, it was mostly dishwashing, cleaning, and brewing tea for me.

Now that I thought about it, she had far fewer responsibilities than a typical personal maid. But then again, that position itself had been created as a way to support her struggling financial situation, so it was only natural.

“…Do you really want to know?”

However, if I were to explain that directly, it would hurt Sasha’s pride. So instead, I decided to give her the chance to explain it in her own way.

“Why don’t you ask her yourself?”

With that decision, I nudged the still-sniffling Sasha toward Pierre and stepped back a little to give them some space.

“I’ll stay out of the way for a bit, so go ahead.”

I had stepped back so far that their voices were barely audible. But if I had stayed too close and listened in, Pierre might have doubted the sincerity of their conversation.

‘Well, Sasha should be able to explain it well enough. I just hope she remembers to mention all the plates she’s broken while at it.’

*****

A few hours before Whitney arrived at the academy with Meredia…

“…I’m sorry. This is my failure.”

“It was impossible to prevent Lady Meredia’s appointment as a judge.”

In the office of the Commoners’ Association president, Pierre, a high-ranking member, was breaking into a cold sweat as he spoke through a communication crystal.

“But Lord Mayer, no matter how much power the Commoners’ Association has been given, overturning the decisions of both the student council and the board of directors is beyond our reach…”

The person on the other end was none other than Meredia’s own brother, Mayer Embergreen.

Contrary to Whitney’s assumption that the emperor was behind the sabotage, the one pulling the strings behind the scenes was Mayer, who had been grinding his teeth ever since the last incident, desperate to regain his standing within the Black Mages’ Union.

— I’m starting to question whether you’re even worthy of my support.

“L-Lord Mayer…”

— Given that the presidency of the Commoners’ Association rotates every month, you do realize your usefulness is coming to an end, don’t you?

Mayer had taken a risk by reaching out to Pierre, who, like Sasha, was desperate to support his family. However, stopping Meredia, who had already solidified her position, proved to be a nearly impossible task.

“P-Please! Give me another chance! I swear I won’t disappoint you!”

— Hah…

Pierre, now feeling utterly cornered, desperately pleaded for another chance. A deep sigh came from the communication crystal.

— Fine, I’ll give you one last chance.

“T-Thank you!”

After a long silence, Mayer finally responded, and Pierre, who had been bracing himself for the worst, sighed in relief. However…

—Whitney Lingard, prevent his appointment as a Judge

“What?”

—I can handle Meredia, but that guy is just too irritating.

Once again, Mayer’s command, relayed through the communication crystal, was exceedingly difficult.

—Under no circumstances should he be allowed to interfere in the Talent Selection Tournament. Do you understand?

“Uh…”

—Why aren’t you answering?

Pierre, now tasked with opposing someone who had not only received a direct appointment from the imperial prince but was also hailed as the Empire’s greatest hero, broke into a cold sweat as he contemplated the situation.

“He’s not as dangerous as Lady Meredia, is he?”

—…This isn’t the time for you to be making such judgments.

“S-Sorry!”

Pierre had cautiously asked that question, only to receive a chilling reprimand, causing him to hurriedly lower his head.

—Well, it’ll be easier than dealing with that woman, Meredia.

“I-Is that so?”

—But be careful. He’s not someone you can take lightly.

Pierre tilted his head at Mayer’s muttered warning, feeling puzzled.

—That bastard… whatever he is, he’s extremely dangerous.

Setting aside the irony of Mayer obsessing over the selection of judges while scheming behind the scenes, Pierre found himself wondering—

‘Why is someone called the Empire’s hero such a problem?’

All the newspaper articles about Whitney had portrayed him positively, aside from the rumors linking him to Meredia.

‘…Well, it doesn’t matter. As long as my family is happy.’

At the time, he had dismissed Mayer’s words as nothing more than petty resentment toward someone he disliked.

It wasn’t until a few hours later that Pierre would come to understand the true meaning behind those words.

***

“B-Big brother.”

“Sasha…”

Returning to the present—

Pierre had been wracking his brain, worried about what kind of dangerous work his sister had taken on to support their family.

But now, here she was, standing before him, forcing a strained smile as she swallowed back tears at Whitney’s mere command.

“I-I’m living a wonderful and happy life at Young Master Whitney’s estate.”

“Lies. Then what about those tear stains on your letters…?”

“Y-Young Master treats me well, too! He made me sign a weird contract called ‘insurance’? And sometimes he gives me scary and difficult tasks, but…”

Pierre had been about to interrogate his sister, his face turning pale with suspicion.

But then, Sasha continued speaking, and he was left completely speechless.

“Every time that happens, he gives me a lot of money, so it’s fine.”

Pierre stared blankly at his sister for a long moment before swallowing dryly and forcing himself to ask in the gentlest voice he could manage.

“…Sasha. What exactly are those scary and difficult tasks?”

“T-That’s… um…”

Sasha hesitated, glancing nervously at her master before shifting her gaze away from Pierre.

“It’s… a secret.”

Bathing Runiel while ignoring the slave crest etched into her skin.

Pretending to be close friends with someone her age just to spy on them.

Disguising the kidnapped imperial saintess and assisting her with whatever shady party she attended every night.

Given all the strange things she had experienced in just a few months of employment, it was impossible for Sasha to tell Pierre the whole truth.

In a way, keeping it a secret was the best response she could give.

“B-But I really am okay!”

“……”

“I can do anything for my family…!”

There was no need to explain what those words looked like through Pierre’s eyes.

“…Quit your job and come home.”

“Huh?”

“I’ll figure out a way to get the money, so please…”

Pierre’s desperation was only natural.

—That would be a problem.

But just then, a chilling voice echoed in Pierre’s mind.

—That girl has already seen things she shouldn’t have.

Pierre froze in place.

He recognized that voice.

It belonged to Meredia, who had stepped out of the carriage alongside Whitney.

‘…Damn it.’

Sure enough, as he turned his head, his gaze landed on Meredia, standing behind Whitney with her gemstone-like eyes gleaming coldly.

‘How did things end up like this…?’

In that moment, Pierre realized he was now paying the price for opposing the Empire’s one and only imperial princess.

***

“T-There’s really nothing to worry about! The benefits are surprisingly good.”

“…What?”

“Young Master said so himself.”

Sasha, watching Pierre’s expression, spoke up with a meaningful tone.

“He told me that if I handle this situation well, he’ll give me a bonus and even let me visit my family.”

“Ah…”

“So you don’t have to look so serious, Big Brother. Hehe…”

Though Sasha was merely repeating what Alfred had explained to her, Pierre heard it with an entirely different meaning.

“…If I want to protect my sister, I need to act accordingly.”

And as soon as he muttered those words with a bitter expression—

“How did your conversation go?”

Whitney, who had been idly toying with his communication crystal, approached them with a relaxed smile.

“Prince Kendrick just contacted me. He said it’s time for me to attend the board meeting regarding my position as a judge.”

“……”

“Unlike me, however, I imagine your schedule is completely free today, Pierre.”

With that, Whitney lightly patted Pierre’s shoulder, his face full of amusement as he whispered into his ear.

“I do hope you make good use of that free time. Haha…”

“……!”

“Oh, and I’ll send Sasha back to you after the meeting.”

Pierre stared blankly at Whitney for a long time before finally lowering his head in resignation.

“…I’ll be in your care from now on.”

And just like that, Pierre, the current chairman of the Commoners’ Association, officially switched sides.

“Huh? Well, I’ll be in your care as well.”

Had Parsha been there, she would have been positively glowing, convinced that her suspicions about Whitney planting informants in the academy were correct.

But Whitney, satisfied with yet another good deed done for the day, simply hummed a cheerful tune as he made his way toward Meredia.

“Well then, shall we get going, my lady?”

Meredia, who had been watching him with a half-lidded gaze, let out a cold smile and remarked,

“You really are a terrifying person.”

“Pardon?”

Both the board of directors and the Commoners’ Association were displeased with Whitney’s sudden nepo appointment. While she, as chairwoman, could persuade the board to some extent, things would become incredibly troublesome if the Commoners’ Association—under Mayer’s influence—decided to challenge his qualifications.

Still, she thought to herself, it was just like Whitney to solve problems in such a manner.

“That’s why I like you even more.”

“…?”

“Don’t pretend you don’t understand. Just keep your eyes forward and walk.”

And so, as Meredia predicted, the board meeting proceeded smoothly, without any interference from the Commoners’ Association.

“…Therefore, this board hereby resolves the following measure.”

Of course, just because the meeting proceeded smoothly didn’t mean the conclusion was to Whitney’s liking.

“Whitney Lingard, to prove your qualifications as a judge, you shall oversee tomorrow’s first-year midterm exam.”

“Huh?”

“If you fail to detect any cases of cheating or anomalies before the observing professors do, your appointment as a judge will be immediately revoked. That is all.”

Whitney, who had attended the meeting in high spirits, was now pouting after being blindsided by Meredia’s unexpected betrayal.

‘…Maybe I shouldn’t give her a gift after all.’

However, the proposal Meredia had unilaterally declared—

“My lady, the imperial decree clearly stated that Sir Whitney should be excluded…”

“…Since when did the academy take orders from outside forces?”

“I-I have no knowledge of such things.”

—was, in truth, one of the rare acts of kindness she had performed without expecting anything in return.

*****

The next morning, at the exam hall where the midterm was about to begin—

“Cecil, I heard you applied for the Talent Selection Tournament.”

“….”

“Lucky… I’m not even eligible to apply.”

“What do you think? Do you have a good chance?”

Cecil, who had entered the hall while rubbing her sleepy eyes, responded in a hushed tone to her eager friends.

“…Honestly, I already received confirmation in advance.”

“No way, really?”

“Well, there wasn’t really any other candidate.”

As compliments began to pour in, a faint smile graced her lips.

‘Heh, let him sit in that estate and scheme all he wants.’

Feeling unusually cheerful for the first time in a while, she indulged in a small moment of pride.

‘No matter what he does, there’s no way he can stop me from participating in the tournament… right?’

But then, a sudden sense of unease crept in.

Tilting her head, she glanced around.

“Am I just not fully awake yet…?”

She could swear she felt the eerie presence of her brother nearby—when he should have been holed up in his estate, concocting some suspicious plan.

“Cecil, what’s wrong?”

“You okay? The test is about to start.”

“No, it’s nothing…”

Dismissing the absurd thought, she shook her head and began walking again with her concerned friends.

But—

“Our Cecil has quite a lot of friends, doesn’t she?”

“……!”

The moment she heard that familiar and unmistakable voice, she froze in place.

“Wouldn’t you introduce them to your dear brother?”

“…What the hell.”

Standing before her, hands behind his back, a supervisor’s armband strapped to his arm, Whitney grinned down at her with a sinister smirk.

“Hmm-hmm—”

Alon cleared his throat and immediately got to the point for Perion, who was clearly uncomfortable with the situation.

“To be direct, I need ‘Lemiel’s Oath.'”

“…Lemiel’s Oath, you mean?”

Perion, who had been looking dejected just a moment ago, now wore a somewhat surprised expression.

Such a reaction was understandable.

‘Lemiel’s Oath’ was one of the 32 treasures of the Elf race, and he had disguised himself as a human, never once revealing it to anyone.

In other words, from Perion’s perspective, it was impossible not to think that Alon knew his true identity.

“Wait a moment, let me have someone leave. Rine, sorry, could you step out for a bit?”

“Of course.”

Rine bowed her head and quickly exited the room.

Once Alon confirmed that the mercenaries who had followed Perion had also left, he spoke again.

“Now that the outsiders are gone, let’s have a proper conversation.”

“…I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying.”

“You don’t need to deny it so vigorously.”

When negotiating, it’s generally not a good idea to pressure the other party too much.

However, Alon was putting unnecessary pressure for two reasons.

One was that, without starting this way, it would take a very long time to obtain ‘Lemiel’s Oath.’

If approached like a game player, he would have to stay in Lartania for at least a year.

The other reason was that he was certain Perion would accept his offer despite the pressure.

Alon watched Perion, whose expression had turned serious after Rine left.

“Of course, I’m not asking for Lemiel’s Oath without any compensation.”

“…Who are you?”

Perion’s voice was full of suspicion.

Alon answered calmly.

“I don’t think it matters much who I am in this situation. As long as what we’re giving and receiving is clear, that’s all that matters.”

“……”

“One thing I can assure you of is that I won’t be spreading your true identity around.”

“…Let’s hear you out.”

After some hesitation, Perion slowly nodded.

Alon confidently laid out the terms of the negotiation.

“If you give me Lemiel’s Oath, I’ll tell you the location of the item you’re searching for.”

“…The item I’m searching for, what do you mean?”

“The Blessing of Raguernie.”

Perion’s eyes widened in surprise, and his body instinctively twitched.

Seeing Perion react this way, Alon felt a bit confused.

It was no surprise that he was startled by the mention of ‘The Blessing of Raguernie.’

The fact that Perion was looking for it was something only he and the Queen should have known.

‘Even with that in mind, his reaction is a bit too intense. Well, it’s something considered very precious in the game, after all.’

Anyway,

In the original story, Perion spent a long time searching for the ‘Blessing of Raguernie’ but eventually gave up and returned.

The reason Alon knew where this difficult-to-find ‘Blessing of Raguernie’ was located was simple.

It was in a secret room on the 42nd floor.

It was an item that could be obtained by entering that room, which players always visited during maze farming.

Of course, in the game, Alon never gave the blessing to Perion.

Even if Perion reached the maze quickly to start the quest, he would leave Lartania before the player could clear the 40th floor.

“Yes, I know it’s valuable…”

Alon stared at Perion, whose hands were shaking, and continued the conversation.

“…If I tell you where it is, I think it would be a fair exchange. What do you think?”

“Are you saying you know the location of the artifact?”

“Yes. If you agree to the negotiation, I will tell you the location.”

“…Are you asking me to trust you with no proof?”

“Let’s make it clear. If I give you the location of the Blessing, will you agree to the deal?”

A brief silence.

Then, Perion nodded.

“…If the information is true, then I will agree.”

As expected, the negotiation was successful.

Alon smiled inwardly.

“The location is at the eastern edge of the 42nd floor. There’s only one path, so it should be easy for you to find. Once you’re inside, look for the switch when you reach the dead end.”

“The dead end… and the switch?”

“Yes. The Blessing of Raguernie should be there. I’ll take Lemiel’s Oath after that.”

Perion’s face showed confusion for a while.

“…What if, even if the information you gave is true, I take the item and run away?”

That was a natural question, so Alon could answer easily.

“I don’t think you’d break the oath of Paggade.”

“…! How do you know about Paggade?”

“Well…”

Perion was once again greatly surprised.

Alon intentionally gave an ambiguous response.

How he knew, and he had simply said something he had heard directly while playing the game.

Though he considered using a more trusting phrase instead of being vague,

He had repeatedly shown how proud Perion was of Paggade in the game, so Alon chose this approach.

It was like telling him not to make a foolish move.

‘Well, even if I didn’t say anything, looking at his character in the game, he’s not the type to break a promise.’

Perion had even nearly died to keep a promise with the protagonist.

Alon, recalling that episode, was a bit puzzled.

—Why is he reacting like this?

It wouldn’t be strange if he knew about the hidden treasure, the Blessing of Raguernie, and also about Paggade.

“…It will take about a week to confirm.”

Alon stood up after hearing Perion’s words.

“I will wait.”

With that, he turned his body.

A moment later.

“Did everything go well?”

“Yes. But, Rine.”

“What’s wrong, Master?”

“Just asking in case, but I heard that you’re the only senior member left…”

Alon subtly trailed off, but Rine answered easily.

“Yes.”

“Could it be… you… did it on purpose?”

“No? I didn’t do it.”

“…Really? …Really?”

“Yes. Why would I go to such lengths?”

Rine smiled faintly.

…Did she mean that she knows what happened but didn’t do it, or did she not know from the start?

Alon considered asking more but decided to remain silent.

He just thought it would be better to pay a little more attention to Rine.

***

Five days after Alon met Perion.

“…Thank you.”

“It seems you found it.”

“Yes. I was able to find the Blessing of Raguernie.”

Alon was able to meet Perion again earlier than expected.

Perion, bowing his head slightly more politely than before.

“Thank you so much.”

Perion, seemingly wanting to express his gratitude, bent deeply at the waist and then took a ring from his possession and handed it to Alon.

The ring looked as if it were made from a plant’s stem but was by no means flimsy.

Alon quickly recognized that this was the Lemiel’s Oath as he took the ring and thanked Perion.

“Thank you.”

“…May I ask you something?”

Perion asked cautiously.

“What is it?”

After hesitating for a moment, Perion stared at Alon.

“…How did you know the location of the Blessing of Raguernie?”

His voice mixed with suspicion and curiosity.

Alon paused and looked at Perion’s hand.

In it, Perion was holding the dagger, ‘Blessing of Raguernie.’

“That…”

He couldn’t say that he knew because he encountered it countless times in the game.

“Let’s leave it to your imagination.”

Alon could only respond like that.

“Imagination, you say?”

“……”

“Yes. Understood.”

Without questioning further, Perion bowed his head, and after exchanging a brief farewell, Alon left the room.

“Hmm…? Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Perion bow to anyone.”

For a brief moment, Alon thought of the clause in the laws of Paggade, where it was forbidden for anyone, other than the Queen, to bow to anyone.

“Seems like the Blessing of Raguernie is that precious.”

He reached a conclusion without giving it too much thought and began preparing to leave with the ring.

Everything he needed to do in Lartania was finished.

[Hahahahaha! All the money in this world is mine!!!]

“Seriously, this is so frustrating!!”

[Don’t care about that, just give me the money! 5,500 gold coins!!]

As soon as he returned to Merd, Alon informed Basiliora and Evan—who had been obsessed with a psychedelic board game for over three days, laughing and crying over a single piece of fake money—that he would be leaving soon.

“Master.”

Rine, who had been calling him, made him turn around.

“What is it?”

“If you’re going to the Colony, may I come with you?”

“…Do you have to go there?”

“Yes, I need to confirm something for a moment.”

Alon thought for a moment before nodding.

The reason he was heading to the Colony was twofold.

He wanted to meet the Dragonkin at the ruins, but there was also another matter.

There was a cursed item in the desert that needed to be dealt with. If Rine could help, it would be better.

The cursed object disposal plan.

If Rine joined, it would certainly be helpful.

“If you’re fine with it, then let’s go together.”

“Then I’ll prepare.”

Two hours later.

Alon and his group left Lartania and headed to the Colony.

***

At that moment.

Perion, disguised as a mercenary, silently looked down at the ‘Blessing of Raguernie’ in his hand.

Normally, Perion should have been very happy right now.

The ‘Blessing of Raguernie’ was the item he had been searching for even after coming to the human world,

And above all, it was an extremely valuable item for the Elves.

Especially for Paggade.

However, the reason his expression was stiff was because of Marquis Palatio.

…What was that man, really?

Perion thought of the Marquis.

The man who had nonchalantly told him the location of the blessing.

The Marquis was strange in several ways.

First, it was odd that Marquis Palatio knew about ‘Paggade’ at all.

Paggade was a secret organization formed by the Elves through their bloodline rituals, created solely to protect the World Tree.

Only high-ranking nobles, those of High Elf status and above, and members of Paggade knew the name of the organization.

And the Queen.

There was no reason for this name to be spoken outside of those individuals.

Most of them were high-ranking nobles who did not leave the World Tree, and Paggade stayed underground to protect its roots.

Moreover, there was a restriction that prevented even those few Elves from saying the name of Paggade.

In other words, that name should never have come from anyone’s mouth.

‘…Only one person.’

The original founder of this group and the first Elf, Altima,

Only he could mention Paggade freely.

The one who used the Blessing of Raguernie as a weapon, the first Elf and protector of the World Tree.

Only he could speak of it.

That wasn’t the only strange thing.

The place where the Marquis had told him about was somewhere the Elves had created.

The reason Perion could tell was simple.

The space itself was made with the magic circles used by Elves and spirit magic—

Or more precisely, it was identical to the magic circle used in the Paggade hideout, which allowed Perion to check who had been there when he arrived.

The magic circle stored the user’s magical power,

And it kept a record of their visit in the form of a guestbook until the circle collapsed.

Perion had checked there.

No one but him had been there.

And then…

[I hope it gets conveyed well to my younger sibling.]

It was written in a language only Paggade could understand, as if sending a message to him.

In other words, Marquis Palatio knew that Perion was an Elf, knew he was a member of Paggade,

And also knew that the Blessing of Raguernie was in that space without ever having entered it.

…This was an impossible story, no matter how much he thought about it.

Unless the first Elf, who died in the battle against the Black Ones, had come back to life,

It was absolutely impossible.

Confused and unable to make sense of it, Perion thought…

“…I must report this.”

He decided to withhold judgment.

Instead, he would report it to the one who watched over all the Elves.

And, at the same time, to the greatest existence closest to the World Tree, the Great Queen.

Round 281

“This is the village of fairies!”

“Waaah!”

The next day.

After resting from the fatigue of the previous day, we set out to explore the dungeon.

Since we briefly glanced at the fields, we first headed to the nearest World Tree.

Soon, we came across a quaint fairy village after passing through a dense forest where the roots of the World Tree towered like trees.

-(°0°).!!

-(”)?

Thanks to the unannounced guests I brought along, the fairies tilted their heads in confusion and stared at us.

“Is Frey still asleep?”

When I checked the minimap earlier, it clearly indicated that she was here.

The fairies nodded and chatted, confirming she was likely still asleep.

Soon, a few fairies hurried off and returned, dragging a half-asleep Frey along with them.

“Let go! Is this mutiny?”

Sleepy Frey mumbled nonsense.

Kyler and Emily, who had been eagerly exploring the village with wide-eyed excitement, became even more thrilled at the sight of the winged fairies.

“A fairy!”

“Who are you!”

What does ‘who are you’ even mean now?

It probably meant ‘who is this?’

“Huh? The Grand Lord? Lord? Oh, everyone’s here.”

Frey finally noticed us, rubbed her eyes, and looked around.

Ara then spoke to Frey.

“Frey! We have new family members!”

“New family members? Are you talking about these humans?”

“Hello! I’m Emily. Nice to meet you.”

Emily greeted with a bright smile.

Frey looked Emily up and down and stroked her chin.

“Hmm. I’m not sure if you’re fit to be with us! What can you offer to the Grand Lord? For reference, we fairies offer honey to the Grand Lord.”

“Honey?!”

Emily’s eyes sparkled at the mention of honey.

Frey, seeing her interest, raised her nose even higher.

“Hmph! Since you seem to want it so badly, I suppose we have no choice! Alright, kids. Let’s serve our guests some honey.”

✩(-^:°)-

-(。 >w•)/

The excited children rushed to bring honey.

We watched the whole process with nothing but fondness.

As always, just watching the pure-hearted fairies was enough to heal the soul.

Thump!

“This is our special Alfheim honey! It’s crafted using our unique method! Don’t be surprised when you taste it!”

With Frey’s boastful words, we each dipped a finger into the honey and tasted it.

It was the honey the fairies often used in various recipes. It had been a while since I last ate it straight like this.

“It’s always delicious. Thank you, kids, for always making such great honey.”

“Oh, it’s nothing!”

Soon, the fairies gathered around and started eating honey together.

Since it felt a bit lacking to just eat honey, I took out some Layla fruit, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and strawberries.

“Shall we try dipping them?”

“Oooh! Great idea!”

“This makes me so happy!”

The children were the most excited.

Everyone picked their preferred fruits or vegetables and spread honey over them before eating.

The sweetness blended harmoniously, creating a delightful synergy.

“Wow.”

It was incredible.

I chose sweet potato.

First, the outer layer was coated in honey.

Then, the soft flesh of the roasted sweet potato touched my tongue and teeth, releasing its rich aroma.

The combination of sweet potato and honey blended perfectly, creating a dense texture with an exquisite flavor.

It was already sweet, but the honey enhanced the sweetness to an entirely new level.

The best part was that despite being so sweet, it wasn’t overwhelming.

“Mmm.”

I could feel what happiness truly was.

The overwhelming sweetness filled my mouth, making it hard to focus.

I gave the fairies small chopped pieces of produce coated with honey.

The fairies held the tiny pieces tightly with both hands and ate them.

Seon-ah, unable to resist their adorable behavior, immediately started taking pictures.

Emily quietly leaned her head over and asked, “Sister! Could you take a picture of me too?”

“Of course! Come over here.”

Being naturally friendly, Emily had already grown close to Seon-ah.

But why is Seon-ah called Sister, and I’m just Uncle?

After the enjoyable snack time, we toured the Meluca flower fields and headed to the mine.

Clunk, clatter.

Gnolls and goblins were hard at work.

At that moment, a cart loaded with something came out of the mine.

-Kirik!

-Keng?

The kids, noticing us, stopped working and ran toward us.

Their big, sparkling eyes were so cute.

“Take it easy.”

-Kirik!

-Kekang!

From a human perspective, it seemed like work, but to them, it was more like play.

Yet, it was still difficult for me to get used to it.

I guess I was still, after all, human.

“What kind of resources does this mine produce?”

“Most of the construction materials come from here—mainly stone supplies. And we also get a few minerals and gemstones.”

Saying that, I led everyone toward the warehouse.

The warehouse was filled with a large pile of minerals.

Despite being leftovers from what the goblins used, it was still quite a large amount.

“I gave them rough names—this one’s mithril, that’s adamantium, and that’s Arabel.”

At the same time, I explained the properties of each mineral.

Kyler listened with a serious expression.

“We mostly supply these to guilds. I’ve received reports that prototype equipment is about to be released.”

“That’s impressive. If such effects are achieved without dungeon-sourced items but instead through artificial crafting…”

Kyler then subtly glanced at Ara and Cheong.

“Do you have any intention of equipping the familiars as well?”

“Excuse me? No, I don’t think so. There’s no real need for them.”

After all, I don’t go on dungeon expeditions.

Dangerous tasks… Well, they’re rare in the first place, and I don’t actively seek them out, so I don’t see a reason to equip the kids with gear.

‘Except for the tiger pajamas Ara wears.’

That one wasn’t just functional as an item—it was incredibly adorable when Ara wore it.

Of course, if other awakened beings around the world knew I was using a legendary item purely for decoration, they’d probably curse at me, but that’s not my concern.

“Hmm, I see.”

“If you’re interested, just let me know. I can ask them to make one for you, or you could even make it yourself here.”

“Is it possible to make one myself?”

“Yes. If Mammon and Ras work together, they can outdo most blacksmiths.”

Kyler pondered for a moment before nodding.

“Just in case, may I request one for myself as well? If it’s made by your familiars, that would be ideal.”

“Sure. We’ll be heading to the village soon, so I’ll discuss it when I meet them.”

Afterward, we toured the inside of the mine.

Inside, Gnolls and Kkumuris were bustling around.

“Thanks for your hard work.”

Oh, by the way, the Breeder Clan that moved in is now in charge of food distribution.

Thanks to that, it’s much more convenient, as I no longer have to come by and personally provide the food.

‘They even cook meals for them when they visit.’

Before, it was too bothersome to cook for them myself, so I would just hand over large quantities of produce. Now, they even prepare meals.

Because of that, the goblins and Gnolls were so overwhelmed by the improved welfare that they shed tears of gratitude and praised me.

Although it was more thanks to the Breeder Clan kids than me.

Of course, it was a win-win situation if you think about it.

The Breeder Clan kids were happy to be able to cook dishes they liked, and the kids here were happy to enjoy delicious meals.

With the mine tour concluded, we headed toward the Gnoll village.

“Hey, guys!”

-Grand Lord, you’ve arrived!

I had already given Mammon and Ras a heads-up.

Frey, well, she was pure-hearted, so it didn’t really matter, but I thought it was better to inform these two in advance.

-I shall guide the way.

-I will explain the village!

Since she had seen them before, Emily greeted the kids joyfully, and they were equally delighted.

Mammon, watching her reaction, sniffled sentimentally for no reason.

-I’m just glad you’re better!

“What’s wrong, Mammon? Are you crying?”

-Wh-what? I’m not crying!

Frey, half-squinting, stared at Mammon, who avoided her gaze while still sniffing.

Emily, finding him adorable, hugged Mammon tightly once more.

“Thank you for worrying about me, Mammon!”

-I-I wasn’t worried! I firmly believed that our Grand Lord would surely heal you!

However, before long, tears welled up in his big, sparkling eyes, making those who saw him smile.

-Khmm, Emily, you’ve grown much stronger since we last met?

“Can you tell? I’ve gotten super strong. Now I can even dance to the K-pop routines I always imagined!”

The first thing she wanted to do as an 8th-level awakened being was dancing…

Touring the village, I could feel how brightly and purely Emily had grown.

-Kirik!

-Ke-aeng!

The children we met in the village waved their hands in greeting.

Each time, Ara and Emily waved back, responding cheerfully.

“This village is quite large.”

“There are quite a few residents. But most of them built their houses by themselves, so it wasn’t much work for me.”

Oh, right, I remembered the request about making equipment earlier and brought it up to Mammon and Ras.

-Leave it to us!

-Is this where my power is needed? Hmm, I shall help.

Soon, they measured Kyler’s and Emily’s sizes.

Emily hadn’t expected this, but since they were making one, we decided to create a matching set with her father’s.

‘Even if she’s just a Sword Master in name, she should have proper equipment.’

Since they were making it anyway, I thought I’d ask them to make both a practice sword and a real sword for Emily.

-With Kkumuris’ help, we can easily craft swords!

“Oh! Then I’ll leave it to you.”

-This stirs up a new wave of creative inspiration! I had been losing my passion, having only made artistic pieces recently, but now it’s burning brightly again! Ooooh!

“Ooooh!” Ara, getting excited by Mammon’s enthusiasm, joined in, shouting as well.

Leaving the equipment-making to the children, we slowly made our way back to the village.

“It’s quite vast. Even that tree over there is incredibly tall…”

“Right? There are still two more places to introduce.”

“…Wait, there’s still more?”

“And that’s even after I excluded one of them.”

I decided it would be better to suggest exploring Pururuk Forest later when they had more time.

Besides, since the children there were very timid, I thought it might be too soon to introduce them to Kyler and his daughter.

With that, we took the surprised Kyler and headed toward the sea.

“A portal?”

Kyler seemed surprised at the sight of the portal.

Upon stepping through, he froze upon seeing the beach before him.

“Ah, ah…”

“Wow! The sea! Dad, it’s the sea!”

Emily, excited, ran barefoot along the sandy beach.

Ara and Cheong, not wanting to be outdone, followed suit, running after her.

“The sea…?”

“You didn’t expect to see the sea in a dungeon, did you? Honestly, neither did I. It’s fascinating when you realize the water is as salty as real seawater, isn’t it?”

“Ah, y-yes.”

Kyler seemed more confused than I had anticipated.

I looked at him, wondering if something was wrong, and soon he gathered his thoughts and gave a faint smile.

“Actually, Emily’s mother, my late wife, and I shared many memories by the seaside.”

“Ah…”

“I got lost in my memories for a moment. Please excuse me.”

“No, no, it’s nothing. It wasn’t a bother at all.”

Emily’s mother.

In other words, Kyler’s wife had passed away and become a star in the sky.

Since I had heard about it from Nathan beforehand, I decided to leave Kyler alone in his contemplative state.

“I can’t resist. I’m going to do some fishing.”

“Dad, really? You’re going fishing when we have guests?”

“They’re not just guests anymore. They’re like family now.”

On one side of the beach, a small building had been built for my father.

It had fishing gear, simple food supplies, a bed for resting, and even a change of clothes.

Soon, while my father fished on one side, we spent time playing on the beach.

“Grandpa! Can I try it too?”

“Of course! Go ahead.”

I was really glad Emily was so cheerful.

My parents had already come to see Emily as a granddaughter, and the sight was truly heartwarming.

‘I guess we’ll have to postpone visiting the Sky Island until tomorrow.’

When we go, I’ll take care of the Relic of Gluttony in one go.

We spent the rest of the day enjoying the seaside and even held a campfire at night, counting the stars in the sky.

Thinking of Emily’s mother, who was likely among those stars.

Meanwhile, news from the European Union.

They were still struggling with 9th-level monsters, but they were beginning to sense that something was off.

Monsters typically had certain behavioral patterns.

Even the strongest monsters could be defeated with the right strategy, and sometimes it was possible to avoid them altogether.

Though they had succeeded in thoroughly exploring every corner of the dungeon, the alliance still hadn’t located the boss.

It was as if it had vanished.

The only thing they found was a door they assumed to be related to the initial boss they had encountered, but that was it.

“Huh?”

“What’s wrong?”

“There seems to be a space behind this wall.”

“What?”

At last, they discovered the lair of the Gnolls.

Still, it took more time because they proceeded with extreme caution, worried that opening the wall recklessly might result in the sudden appearance of a boss monster that could wipe them out.

About a month later, the European Union finally confirmed the space behind the wall.

Once again, they found nothing but traces of emptiness.

Nevertheless, they rejoiced, claiming it was the discovery of a new civilization.

“This proves that indigenous people once lived in this dungeon!”

“Indigenous people in a 9th-level dungeon! We must find more evidence immediately!”

…They didn’t realize.

What they had discovered were merely traces resembling those of Gnolls found in a 1st-level dungeon.
