Round 266

Ancient slime, huh.

I’ve discovered something completely unexpected.

Squeak.

The slime in Ara’s hand tilted its head and stared at me.

Since this one’s a slime too, I wonder if it’ll follow my commands.

“Ara, can you put it down for a moment?”

“Okay!”

As Ara put down the ancient slime, it just looked around blankly.

“Hmm, come here.”

Squeak.

Shuffle shuffle.

Oh wow, it listens to commands!

Even though it’s an ancient slime, I guess a slime is still a slime.

“Roll.”

“Jump.”

“Stop.”

The slime flawlessly executed every command I gave it.

Watching it move so obediently, I nodded in satisfaction.

“Welcome! My subordinate!”

Squeak?

The ancient slime tilted its head in confusion.

Hmm, I think I should give it a name.

“Ara, what should we name it?”

“Hmm…”

Ara stroked her chin and pondered deeply. After a while, she looked at me and hesitantly spoke.

“Sujaebi?”

“Sujaebi? What’s that?”

“Um… alright, let’s call it Sujaebi.”

I’m sorry, Sujaebi.

Even your name couldn’t escape fate.

“When will we finish naming everything?”

“Huh? Who?”

I raised my gaze and looked at where Ara was pointing.

“Huh?”

There, besides Sujaebi, other ancient slimes were blankly staring at us.

It wasn’t just one!

Counting them, there were about nine ancient slimes. Moreover, through Ara’s interpretation, I learned that these nine weren’t the only ones.

“Great, new recruits!”

Haha, the more workers, the better.

But I was curious about one thing.

Could these guys farm too?

As my curiosity grew, the crystal slime and the new slimes gathered together and started interacting.

Blob?

Squeak!

Wiggle wiggle.

Squeak.

I wasn’t sure what they were doing, but the scene of them bonding looked quite endearing.

Especially with the ancient slimes, as they had visible eyes and mouths, their emotions were easy to read.

Squeak!

They smiled brightly.

At least, it was clear that their current emotions were positive.

“Now that I think about it, these guys are said to have liquid synthesis abilities.”

I felt intrigued.

What would happen if I tried synthesizing the ancient slime?

While I was lost in thought, the slimes suddenly began moving.

“They’re leaving!”

“Huh? To where?”

“To the village!”

“The village?”

I followed after the group of slimes.

Ara, Mammon, Ras, Ashu, Cheong, Frey.

And even the slimes.

Seon-ah, Jae-seong, and Orie were nowhere to be seen.

I wondered how far we’d go, and eventually, we arrived at a cave.

The entrance was enormous, easily dozens of meters tall.

“Wow.”

I marveled as I followed inside.

As we entered, echoes filled the air, and I could hear the faint sound of flowing water.

Simultaneously, the adorable sounds of the slimes moving could be heard.

“It’s the village!” Ara declared again.

Her words made me realize that this place was the village where the ancient slimes lived.

As we ventured further inside, a bright light came into view. Heading toward the dazzling light, the interior gradually lit up.

“Wow.”

Whoosh…

A massive waterfall was flowing.

A gigantic waterfall inside a cave—how scenic!

The ceiling was open, allowing light to stream in. Strangely, the light was a pure white color, something rarely seen in the Dungeon of Gluttony.

It was almost like sunlight.

Thanks to this, the village, centered around the enormous waterfall, was illuminated, creating a bright and lively scene.

Squeak? Squeak!

Squeak-squeak!

Despite being inside a cave, the area was surrounded by grass-like plants, with wildflowers blooming shyly in between.

Such a beautiful sight.

The scenery was breathtaking.

“You all live here, huh?”

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ! Can I go play?”

“Sure, go ahead.”

“Let’s gooo!”

Ara dashed straight toward the waterfall.

Following behind her were Cheong and a few slimes.

Nearby, I noticed some makeshift slime dwellings.

Covered by grass-like plants that blanketed the surroundings, these dwellings gave off a harmonious vibe, as if coexisting with nature. It suited the ancient slime species perfectly.

Wait… I don’t see any fields.

What do these guys eat?

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong !”

“Oh, Ashu.”

“There’s food over there!”

Ashu, who was exploring nearby, tugged at my arm.

Following her lead, I found myself headed toward the waterfall.

“Wait, food? Here?”

“It’s inside there!”

I could only see kids playing enthusiastically in the waterfall.

What’s she talking about?

Before I could ask, Ashu disappeared behind the waterfall.

“Huh?”

What’s this? There’s a space behind the waterfall?

Curiosity sparked at this unexpected discovery.

Spotting an ancient slime nearby, I asked it to guide me.

Squeak!

Following the slime, I found a path leading behind the waterfall without getting wet.

“Oh wow…”

The space behind the waterfall revealed yet another surprising scene.

How should I describe this?

It’s kind of tricky.

“Look, Kyu-seong Kyu-seong , over here!”

As Ashu pointed out, there was indeed food here.

Or… should I call it food?

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what it was.

To describe it roughly: plants growing out of rocks, plants dangling from the ceiling, and mysterious floating orbs of light.

It was fascinating.

The sight felt incredibly ethereal.

Since it was behind the waterfall, there was no direct natural light, but the floating light orbs illuminated the space, creating a sparkling, magical scene.

“This is food?”

“Yes, it looks like it’s what they eat.”

“Really? This?”

The plants were truly peculiar.

And these fist-sized floating orbs of light—what were they?

Just then, one of the ancient slimes stepped forward cautiously and did something.

Pop!

I realized it was pulling up a plant rooted in the rocks.

Squeak!

“You’re giving this to me?”

Squeak-squeak!

The slime handed me a long piece of grass.

From its appearance, it resembled a green onion.

How it managed to grow roots in the rock was beyond me.

For now, I checked to see if it was an item—but it wasn’t.

I split the leek-like plant in half and gave one part to Ashu.

“Hmm?”

It had a spicy aroma.

When I cut the leek-like plant, its sap released a faint, spicy scent.

It really seemed like a green onion—no, more like a spring onion.

Crunch.

I took a bite.

A subtle sweetness accompanied by a spicy aroma spread in my mouth.

Curiously, though the scent was spicy, the taste itself wasn’t spicy at all.

“How fascinating.”

The flavor was excellent.

It wasn’t as astonishing as the crops I personally cultivated, but it was good enough to earn my approval.

It also had a unique taste and charm that I didn’t find in the usual crops I ate.

It was tangy, crunchy, and had a gentle onion-like aroma.

Honestly, I preferred this over the green onions sold in stores.

Squeak!

Meanwhile, the ancient slime was hopping around, trying to catch one of the floating orbs of light.

“Is it okay to catch that?”

“Let me do it!”

Ashu swiftly grabbed one of the orbs.

I had worried it might be a living creature, but when I saw the caught orb, I was surprised.

“It’s a plant?”

“Wow, even I’m amazed. I didn’t expect a vegetable like this!”

It turned out to have proper leaves wrapped around its glowing part.

The orb was incredibly light, which explained why it floated around.

“What kind of plant is this?”

“Let’s see what happens.”

Ashu handed the glowing orb to the slime.

The slime peeled away the leaves one by one, like peeling a banana, and ate only the glowing core inside.

Nom nom nom.

Its tiny mouth made adorable munching sounds.

“Shall we try it too?”

“I want to try it!”

We each grabbed an orb and peeled off the leafy outer layers, just like the slime.

Finally, we popped the glowing core into our mouths.

“Whoa?!”

Cotton candy!

The texture melted instantly in my mouth.

Actually, it didn’t even feel like it had texture.

But the flavor was nothing like cotton candy.

Vanilla ice cream? But without the sweetness?

At the same time, there was a rich, chocolate-like taste. Though again, it wasn’t sweet.

It was an incredibly unique flavor, so I slowly savored the taste and aroma.

If sugar were added, this could make a fantastic dessert.

“Wow, this is amazing.”

“It’s filling too!”

Surprisingly, just as Ashu said, I felt full.

It was as light as cotton but left a satisfying heaviness in my stomach after eating.

How on earth did this plant grow?

It was truly peculiar.

Squeak!!

Next, there was a vine hanging from the ceiling. On the vine were clusters of chili-like crops.

Some of them had fallen to the ground, and it seemed the slimes were eating the ones that had dropped.

Ashu and I also picked up a few fallen ones.

They looked like long beans with a sleek outer shell.

Inside, they seemed to contain actual beans.

First, we observed how the slimes handled them.

Rip.

As expected, the slime split open the outer shell.

Inside were beans.

“This seems pretty normal.”

For the first time, I thought I had encountered a relatively ordinary plant.

But then, the slime ate the outer shell and discarded the beans.

“??”

What’s this?

They eat the shell and throw away the beans?

Maybe they’re eating it wrong?

Although I was slightly confused, I decided to follow suit.

There were plenty of fallen ones on the ground, so there was no harm in trying.

“Okay, so you peel the shell like this… And then… throw away the beans?”

I put the shell in my mouth.

Crunch.

“Huh??!!”

A taste I never expected!

How could this be?

Crunch crunch.

With each bite, juice oozed out.

At the same time, there was a strangely familiar flavor.

“Jerky?”

“It tastes like meat! This is so fascinating!”

Ashu, you’re a rabbit—how do you even know what meat tastes like?

Regardless, as Ashu said, the shell of this bean-like plant tasted like meat.

And not just plain meat—it had a seasoned flavor!

“How is this even possible?”

Out of curiosity, I picked up the discarded beans.

I cautiously tasted one.

“…Now I get why they were thrown away.”

It was bitter, with a strong grassy taste, like chewing on raw weeds.

In contrast, the shell tasted like meat.

The contrast was unbelievably odd.

After sampling the three unique plants, I looked around.

The area behind the waterfall was incredibly spacious.

It seemed endless.

Now I noticed scattered slimes here and there, busily doing something.

These little guys were clearly natural-born farmers.

“I need to take this new ingredient to Jae-seong.”

“Let’s show it to Master! He’ll make a new recipe!”

The spring onion-like plant was impressive, though I already loved it.

But the floating plant and the meat-flavored shell were extraordinary.

These ingredients were nothing like Earth’s.

I imagined Jae-seong crafting a signature dish with them—it was exciting.

Ashu and I gathered some of the crops.

I felt a little guilty about taking them from the ancient slimes, but there was so much that our haul was a mere fraction.

Splash splash!

“Try to stop me!”

“Mammon! Block him!”

“Aaah, how can I stop him?”

The kids were happily playing in the lake formed by the waterfall.

Surprisingly, Ara was quiet, meditating.

“Kids, I’m stepping out for a bit!”

“Okay, Dad!”

Cheong, who was splashing in the water, answered on behalf of the group.

I waved at my adorable Cheong, who waved back energetically, and headed outside.

“Hmm, maybe I should install a portal right here.”

“That’s not a bad idea!”

Ashu and I descended to the surface.

Jae-seong wasn’t around, but Orie was.

“Huh? Where are the others?”

“Eh-to. They went out.”

“Ah, I see.”

They must have stepped out for the restaurant.

Maybe Seon-ah went to the forest again?

In any case, I took Orie to the kitchen.

Then I showed her the newly harvested ingredients.

“What is this?”

“It’s a new ingredient I brought from up there. Try tasting it.”

First, the spring onion.

Crunch.

Orie chewed on it and nodded, indicating it was quite good.

Next was the glowing orb.

Bringing it down had been tricky since it kept trying to float away. I made a mental note to collect them in a mesh bag next time.

Orie looked fascinated by the floating orb.

She peeled off the leaves, just like peeling a banana, and her eyes widened in surprise.

“Umami!”

“It’s delicious, isn’t it? Fascinating, right?”

“Yes!”

She nodded vigorously, her reaction full of enthusiasm.

But the real surprise was still to come.

“Now, try this bean shell!”

“Ehh?”

I peeled the shell, discarded the beans, and handed it to Orie. She tilted her head, clearly puzzled.

When I gestured for her to eat it, she cautiously took a bite of the shell.

And then—

“EEEEHHHHH?!!”

Her shocked exclamation echoed through the kitchen.

“Then you’re not saying it’s impossible to succeed?”

“Correct. The Palatio dukedom is well-located and often frequented by merchants.”

“Even so, the merchants didn’t come around as often as you’d think.”

“Probably because up until now there was no particular reason to visit the dukedom, so they might have preferred to visit other estates a bit farther away.”

“Is it because of the local products?”

“Yes, indeed. The surrounding estates do have their own special products.”

Alexion’s response was straightforward.

Alon admired inwardly, thinking, ‘This is why business should indeed be handled by those who are skilled in it.’

Alon nodded unconsciously, observing how well Alexion understood the situation of the estates better than himself.

Well, strictly speaking, Alon hadn’t really focused on developing his estate.

But, it was true that Alexion had exceptional business acumen.

‘Should I invest?’

Initially, when Alon found out Alexion owned the auction house, he thought it necessary to reconsider his investment.

Alon knew how dire Alexion’s true nature could be, even though he seemed mild-mannered when they met through Radan.

But after discussing further, Alexion appeared quite normal.

No, more than normal – he seemed extremely intelligent.

‘…Was Alexion originally normal, but something happened before the player arrived at Laksas?…No, I heard he was always like that.’

It was puzzling.

‘Well, he seems fine for now.’

Alon concluded his judgment and asked.

“If we proceed as I described, how much would we need?”

“Um, it seems like it would cost a fair amount.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, initially, setting up the foundation alone will require a substantial amount of money.”

“I’m prepared to invest a reasonable amount, of course, to you as well.”

Alon was considering a significant investment in the business.

He hoped to earn money without exploiting the local people.

“So, I’d like to have an open and comfortable discussion… What are you looking at?”

However, Alexion seemed a bit off.

Since the start of their serious conversation, he was subtly looking not at Alon but somewhere behind him.

Following his gaze, Alon turned his head.

‘A tree?’

Just an ordinary tree was in sight.

“Ah, nothing serious. I have a habit of staring into space, which might have caused some rudeness unintentionally.”

“That’s alright.”

Everyone has their habits.

As Alon nodded, Alexion, forcing a smile, looked behind Alon at a woman holding a video screen.

There, Radan was,

‘If caught, just like that.’

Uttering fierce words, spelling out every letter clearly as if to ensure understanding, held back a scream he wanted to let out.

He knew it.

He knew Radan was capable of such things.

To survive, one must handle oneself well.

Alexion began to give practical advice, maintaining his poker face.

Normally, he might have advised keeping a ‘bit more’ profit for himself, but with Radan watching, that plan was off the table.

He did not want to die over a slip of the tongue.

“For the scale of business you envision, initially, this much funding will be necessary.”

“…That’s quite a lot.”

“It can’t be helped. First, building the structures will require a large initial investment, and then gathering the merchants will cost money as well. Furthermore—”

“What about?”

“The key is to make the merchants feel it’s more important to stop here because of the benefits we offer, even if there are special products in other estates. That will also require more money.”

“…If we operate that way, wouldn’t the merchants stop coming if the benefits were removed?”

“No. By gathering the merchants and boosting the auction house and surrounding tourist industries, once the auction house becomes a major value, merchants won’t easily exclude this dukedom from their routes.”

“What if—”

After a lengthy discussion, Alexion suddenly—

“So, originally, we would need about 250% of the proposed amount—”

—stopped talking.

Because Radan was staring intently at him from outside, shaking his head.

“However, if I make an effort, perhaps 200% would suffice—”

Despite feeling Radan’s menacing glare from afar, Alexion adjusted his statement smoothly.

Shake—

Radan shook his head once again.

“It’s possible, and I might even be able to reduce it to 180%,”

Alexion reluctantly lowered the figure, feeling a bit wronged.

However, slowly shaking his head again, Radan’s actions made Alexion say, “Perhaps, it might even be feasible to go down to 150%…”

He said this while internally screaming with frustration.

Honestly, he had slightly inflated the initial rate out of greed, but it wasn’t like it left much profit anyway.

Yet, despite this…

Shake—

Seeing the devil continuously shaking his head through the window, Alexion’s previously smiling face tensed up.

‘Isn’t this too much?’

They say even a cornered rat will bite a cat, and Alexion, faced with such unreasonable demands, involuntarily wore a venomous expression.

‘I’ve done everything! Everything!!!’

He had obediently gone to the Pirate Peninsula when asked, he had withdrawn from illegal businesses when told to stop underworld activities.

He had come to the dukedom without complaint when asked, and had already reduced the investment proposal from about 200% to 150%.

Was it still not enough?

The countless memories of humiliation and oppression intensified his resentment, and finally, with emotions surging, Alexion declared,

“……100%.”

“What?”

“I will do it with the originally proposed investment amount,”

he conceded, swallowing tears of blood as he lowered his head.

After all, he did not want to die.

Nod—

Radan nodded in satisfaction through the window.

Alexion’s face was the very image of despondency.

And Alon, standing opposite, was.

“???”

He couldn’t help but be puzzled.

In fact, a proper negotiation hadn’t even started before it was unilaterally concluded.

After a moment of bewilderment, Alon finally spoke up.

“…… Let’s settle on 150%.”

“What?”

“If what you say is true, that seems to be the necessary investment,” he said.

A calm voice. However, Alexion’s eyes widened in disbelief. Although granting 150% was still insufficient, everything is relative. Seeing Radan ruthlessly haggling over prices, and then the Marquis offering to add an extra 50%, Alexion felt tears welling up in his eyes.

‘Marquis is truly a saint…!’

Objectively, he was not a saint, but having dealt extensively with Radan, Alexion felt overwhelmed.

“Thank you…! Truly, thank you!”

He bowed deeply, holding back tears that were starting to flow.

Alon thought, ‘Is this a midlife crisis?’ Watching Alexion’s emotions rise and fall on his own, a rational doubt surfaced in his mind.

***

King Carmaxes III of the Colony was recently less busy than other monarchs of the allied kingdoms because his desert kingdom had not been affected by the recent Outer gods crisis. Except for the initial meeting, he was not much affected by the recent major events. Instead,

“Did another seismic event occur?”

“Yes, the Manna estate suffered significant damage.”

“Hmm.”

King Carmaxes III was concerned about the recent seismic events.

“How many does this make?”

“The fifth.”

“How strange. What about the wizards?”

“It seems the wizards from the Tower are investigating, but they haven’t identified the cause yet.”

This was because these seismic events, which usually occurred around the magical Towers, were happening more frequently everywhere.

“Hmm—”

King Carmaxes thought briefly and then decided not to worry about it. The estates were suffering, but it was not yet excessive. Instead,

“…What is Karsem doing?”

“He is learning magic today as well.”

He inquired about the second prince, who had recently piqued his interest.

“Again today?”

“Yes.”

“And, does he have talent?”

“Yes, quite a bit. He’s already reached the first tier.”

“Already?”

“Yes. It’s said that he is very talented and also puts in considerable effort.”

The advisor continued, “Recently, the court’s opinion of the second prince has significantly improved. Most say he has gained a lot of respectability since that incident.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. There are even many who say he has become more respectable than the first prince recently.”

“That much?”

“It seems so, possibly more noticeable due to the contrast with his past behavior.”

The advisor paused briefly.

“I also think the second prince has changed a lot.”

He added his personal impression.

“Hmm—”

“Even recently, he saved a maid who nearly fell while cleaning the railing.”

“Karsem did?”

“Yes. It’s said he commented, ‘If it were Marquis Palatio, he would have done the same…'”

“That’s a bit cringeworthy.”

“I agree, but it seems his temperament has genuinely softened.”

Hearing this, King Carmaxes III involuntarily stroked his chin. Truthfully, the second prince was not the son he was most concerned about. Of course, he loved his family, but he did not see the second prince as a suitable heir. Although the first prince did not entirely meet his standards either, he was considerably better compared to the second, so he had marked him as the successor.

However, recently, the first prince was gradually falling out of favor with King Carmaxes III. Despite having been instructed in heir-appropriate behaviors from a young age, he was still quietly causing various troubles, not as overtly as the second prince, but still. Of course, the first prince thought he had kept it all hidden, but King Carmaxes knew everything. There was nowhere in the palace his reach did not extend.

Therefore, ‘Who exactly is Marquis Palatio?’

King Carmaxes III admired the man who had single-handedly reformed the notorious Karsem while pondering.

‘Karsem, Karsem…’

He muttered the second prince’s name, his gaze growing stern. His look was not that of a family man, but solely that of a king evaluating someone. This gaze perhaps forewarned of a struggle that should not happen.

A month later, when winter had fully passed and a warm spring day arrived,

[Marquis, how have you been?]

“It’s been a while.”

Alon received a periodic report from Duke Zenonia, which he received every few months. And,

[By the way, I heard you recently established an auction house in your estate.]

“Yes, I’m thinking about managing the estate a bit.”

[Shall I help you a little with that?]

“Feel free not to hold back.”

It was just a brief conversation after the report.

…And that was all it had been.

“Marquis, how about exclusive auction rights for the premium specialties produced in our estate?”

“Marquis, our guild would like to establish a regular relationship with—”

“Hello, Marquis Palatio! I am leading a guild called ‘Salman’ in the Kingdom of Ashtalon.”

How did it come to this?

“Evan.”

“Yes.”

“…How many more people am I supposed to meet?”

“About 74 people are waiting.”

…How is this a ‘little help’…??

Alon held his head, feeling overwhelmed.

“Let me take that out of your mouth. You shouldn’t scream, okay?”

I carefully took the still pale-faced Hestia, who had been crumpled in the closet, back to the bed with Runiel’s help.

I whispered softly to her, who was still shivering, and reached out my hand.

“Hah, hah.”

As soon as I removed the pillowcase that had been shoved into Hestia’s mouth, she exhaled roughly for a moment before opening her mouth with a determined expression.

“I… whatever you do to me, it won’t matter.”

“Hey….”

“I won’t move the way you want me to anymore.”

Though her face still showed signs of fear, her eyes were resolute.

“You dirty dark mage.”

“Haha….”

She spat out the words as if chewing them, then shut her mouth. I almost applauded her spirit like a third-rate villain.

Now, however, it was time to clear up the misunderstandings that had built up.

“I’m a white mage.”

“What?”

“Look, let me show you.”

First, I needed to prove that I wasn’t a dark mage, so I extended my hand in front of her, who had a serious expression, and silently gathered my white magic.

“This… this white magic is a bit different from what I know.”

But, as expected, Hestia’s eyes seemed to find my grayish dark magic suspicious.

Even someone with the saint’s talent might be unsure about this white magic. Will I be stripped of my white mage qualification too?

“Anyway, it’s not dark magic, right?”

“Well, I guess so…”

Fortunately, after observing my white magic for a while, Hestia seemed to have concluded that I wasn’t a dark mage.

“By the way, doesn’t the voice that was hurting your head stop now?”

“How do you know that?”

“My white magic is neutralizing the curse on you. Though it’s only a temporary measure.”

With that, I took the opportunity to reveal the secret she had been hiding and whispered quietly to Hestia, who was now looking startled.

“I’m actually trying to save you.”

“Me…?”

“I know that dark mages are targeting you, and I also know the only way for you to survive.”

Her eyes widened, and they began to tremble once again at my words.

“I apologize for using somewhat rough methods due to the circumstances, but please, I have one request.”

“……”

“Will you stay here for a few weeks? It will take time to find the only person who can guarantee your safety.”

As I carefully untied the blanket that bound her hands and feet, I laid out all the facts before her.

“How can I believe that?”

As expected, Hestia looked at me with considerable distrust and slight fear.

“Actually, you could be the one behind that cursed voice. That’s why the voice isn’t in my head anymore.”

“If that’s true, then there’s no reason for me to act like this now, is there?”

“That’s something we don’t know. Maybe there’s a situation where you had no choice but to deceive me to persuade me.”

Given that she had been used without anyone to trust, it made sense she’d react this way when someone who had abducted her without any explanation suddenly started talking calmly.

“…If what you’re saying is really true, then please send me to the Holy Church.”

“That would be difficult. You know well enough how stubborn they are, right?”

But even then, I couldn’t comply with Hestia’s earnest request.

“They’ll push you into endless trials instead of protecting you. So…”

“Then, explain the situation to the Empire and request personal protection.”

“That won’t work either. This may sound disrespectful, but the Emperor is targeting you.”

Of course, I fully understood the situation, but to Hestia, it must have seemed like I was dodging the issue.

“In the end, you want me to stay here, right? Without any evidence that I can trust you.”

I understood her sharp reaction, but I had to convince her—who would eventually become the saint—somehow.

“Umm, how about you trust me just this once, based on this innocent face?”

“Innocent…?”

“It was a joke, so don’t give me that serious look.”

Of course, revealing that I was actually someone who had experienced this world as a game in my past life would probably make me seem like a madman, so I hesitated for a while.

“Ah, I’ve got it! How about this method?”

“…?”

Suddenly, a simple solution came to mind, and with a bright smile, I started explaining to Hestia, who was looking at me with anxious eyes.

“Hestia, why don’t you read my soul directly?”

“Your… soul?”

“If you’re the saint who received the divine oracle, you should be able to easily tell if my soul is evil, right?”

Though it felt a bit awkward to say, I could confidently claim that I had lived a decent life in both my past and present lives.

I’ve never harmed anyone, and I’ve always made it a principle to share what I have.

So, at least when the saint reads my soul, it should reassure her.

“I’m… not a saint.”

However, Hestia’s reaction to my words wasn’t what I expected.

“Because of that damn voice, I’ve had to pretend to be a saint, but I’m actually just a bastard’s daughter, nothing more.”

“What about the divine oracle from the Holy Church?”

“They must have fabricated it. I have no divine power, not even magical talent. I’m just a puppet, useful for them to manipulate.”

She said this while looking down at the engagement dress she was still wearing, and her face seemed very dark.

“My thoughts are a bit different.”

But knowing from my previous life that she was the most powerful saint ever, I understood that she was an extraordinary character.

Her survival in the prologue alone determined whether the game would end happily or badly, so I knew it was pointless to say more.

“Now, extend your hand.”

“Yikes.”

“…I won’t do anything this time, so go ahead.”

So, as Hestia hesitated, I quickly grabbed her hand and whispered softly while resonating my soul.

“Now, close your eyes and focus. Try to feel the flow of my soul through my body.”

“Even if you say that…”

Maybe it was because of her terrifying talent.

“…Oh, oh?”

“See? You can feel it, right?”

At first, she looked at me with a confused expression, but soon she recognized my soul and her eyes widened.

“Is this… a soul?”

“That’s right. Normally, sensing a soul would take months of hard effort, but as expected of a saint?”

“Huh? But why is it so pure…?”

As she muttered in surprise, looking at my face, I instinctively sensed that she was beginning to understand, and I gave her a bright smile, about to seal the deal.

“This is proof that I’m a good-hearted white mage, full of thoughts of saving you…”

“…Wait a minute.”

Before I could finish my sentence, Hestia’s pupils began to shake violently.

“This is… Yikes!”

“Saint?”

Suddenly, she twisted her body in fear, her face pale, and sweat began pouring down like rain.

“Ah, ah… Ahhh…”

“It seems that was a bit too much for you. But you did well for your first time.”

I watched her with concern, but as her condition worsened and she began screaming, I hurriedly cut the connection to her soul and tried to comfort her.

“Hah, hah….”

“So, how do you feel now? You can trust me, right?”

Still, Hestia’s face remained pale, so I carefully asked her, watching for any signs of change.

“I… I’ll do as you say.”

“Ah, that’s a relief…”

She soon lifted her head again and began speaking in a whispering voice, and at first, I was somewhat relieved.

“I… what should I do?”

“Uh… just stay here safely until the time comes, that’s all.”

I realized something was off about her reaction, and I couldn’t help but show a perplexed expression.

“Anything… I’ll do anything… please…”

…?

Why is this person suddenly malfunctioning?

– Bang! Bang! Bang!

At that moment, as I stood stunned by her sudden change, a frantic voice from Shasha could be heard from outside the door.

“Shasha, right now I…”

– The Imperial family has arrived!

“What?”

Given the situation, I thought I would put off whatever news Shasha had, but the moment she mentioned the ‘Imperial family,’ I rushed toward the door.

“Why is the Imperial family here…?”

“They… they bring a command from the Emperor!”

I slightly opened the door and greeted her, and fortunately, the news she brought was not the worst situation.

“Where is Alfred?”

“Ah, Lord Alfred went to attend the Empire’s servant meeting.”

“Then, where is Parsha?”

“Pa… Parsha has been bedridden since yesterday…”

However, the problem was that if I left now, there would be no one to take care of Hestia, whose condition was already worsening.

“Master, I’ll take care of this place first…”

“Take care of it? How?”

Luckily, Runiel, who was nearby, spoke up.

“Shouldn’t we put her back in the closet first?”

“Hah…”

Since Runiel seriously suggested locking the saint in the closet as a solution, her approach was far too lacking in subtlety, so I couldn’t entrust it to her.

“Well, from the looks of it, it seems like they want to take the young master somewhere immediately…”

“……”

“What… what do we do? Young master?”

In this case, the only person I could trust in such a situation was Shasha.

“Shasha.”

“Y-yes?”

“You know I trust you very much, right?”

“Wh-why are you saying that all of a sudden?”

I hesitated for a moment and, seeing Shasha looking so uneasy, spoke seriously.

“Just for a little while, please take care of the person inside until I return.”

“Who… who…?”

“You don’t need to know.”

“Ugh.”

I felt bad seeing Shasha’s eyes tremble with pity after hearing my firm words, but it was something I had no choice but to do.

“Just… if it seems like anyone might find out, ask Runiel about the secret passage in the office.”

However, to protect our family’s fate and continue paying Shasha a high salary, I needed her help, and this was inevitable.

“Just… give her a little time…”

“I’ll trust you, Shasha.”

“Uh, uh?”

With that thought in mind, I gently pushed the still-frightened Shasha into the room, sighed quietly, and began fixing my attire.

– Hieeeeeek!

As Shasha’s deflated scream, after realizing who was inside the room, reached my ears, I smiled wryly.

“Haha…”

When I return, I’ll give her a generous reward for her help, including a vacation and salary. Just this one time, please, Shasha.

Meanwhile, at the Embergreen Duchy.

“So, why are you here?”

As usual, Meredia was acting as the head of the house in place of the Duke of Embergreen, who was absent. For some reason, a group of Imperial Knights arrived, almost the same number as when Whitney had visited.

“We are here to take Miss Meredia as a witness for the incident at the engagement ceremony yesterday.”

“I’ve already cooperated with all the investigations on-site.”

“New facts have come to light during the investigation, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

While Whitney’s visit had been more ceremonial, it seemed there were other motives behind the knights’ visit.

“However, it wasn’t just an investigation. There were secret matters that cannot be revealed at this time, and His Majesty the Emperor has ordered Miss Meredia to come.”

The first clue was that the ones sent to fetch her were none other than the elite First Imperial Knights, the core of the Empire’s military.

“So, please cooperate.”

“…We don’t want to be hostile to you either.”

Moreover, the second clue was the way the captain and vice-captain of the knights stood at attention, closely watching every movement of the person in front of them.

“So?”

However, unlike them, Meredia stood with a relaxed expression and smirked slightly.

“Do I have to bow my head and go just because the Emperor says so?”

Had it been anyone else but Meredia saying those words, it would have been considered treason, punishable by death.

“You know very well about the oath between the Imperial family and the Embergreen Duchy, don’t you?”

“…But…”

“And as the temporary head of the Embergreen family, I have the authority to act on behalf of the Duke. Do you need further explanation?”

However, unlike the cowardly Mayer, who had knelt before the Emperor, Meredia, acting as the head of the family in the Duke’s absence, had far more authority.

“If you keep being uncooperative, it will be difficult for us as well…”

“I don’t think you’re understanding, so let me say it one last time.”

Even if Meredia had no authority as the head of the family, it was impossible to take her without her will.

“I’m extremely tired and annoyed right now.”

“…”

“So if you want to see me, His Majesty should come himself.”

Despite facing the First Imperial Knights without any formalities, it was clear that the ones who were truly nervous were the knights, not Meredia.

“This is bad.”

“Lord Whitney just left with the Second Imperial Knights.”

“Sigh… then, for now…”

The knight commander, who understood the situation all too well, sighed as his vice-captain whispered the report and was about to pull the knights back.

“Hey, you.”

“Yes?”

With a dismissive expression, Meredia suddenly shot a sharp look at the vice-captain.

“Did you say… Whitney as well?”

“Yes, Lord Whitney received the Emperor’s orders too.”

“…That one?”

“Well, Lord Whitney is just going to have a brief interview as a witness, and then he’ll be under the Emperor’s command…”

The vice-captain hesitated but continued speaking while watching Meredia’s eyes, sensing she was waiting for the right moment.

“To ensure proper rewards, the testimony of the noblewoman who attended the engagement ceremony with him is crucial…”

“…Then, let’s go.”

“What?”

Before the vice-captain could finish, Meredia immediately replied, completely nullifying the previous tension.

“Did you not hear?”

“No, it’s just…”

“I said I’m personally going to the Imperial Palace.”

With that, Meredia confidently moved forward, leaving the stunned knights behind.

“If my fiancé is there, then I’ll go too.”

“…”

“I still have business with him.”

After saying that, Meredia passed through the knights and climbed into the waiting carriage. As the vice-captain, still in shock, glanced at the knight commander, he quietly asked him.

“They’re saying the Imperial news is all fake, right, Commander?”

“…How would I know?”

As the vice-captain, still bewildered, stared at Meredia, who had boarded the carriage, the commander responded with disbelief in his tone.

“That Meredia, who until yesterday, no one knew was actually in a relationship with the eldest son of an unknown count.”

Though all the knights were watching Meredia, she, sitting with her chin resting on the carriage, was focused on something—someone’s handkerchief still tied in her hand.

A month and two weeks have passed since the artificial Outer gods incident caused by Duke Komalon.

Stalian V sighed deeply in Tern, a sigh laden with multiple meanings.

Now that it was confirmed that Duke Komalon had instigated the incident, the Kingdom of Ashtalon had no choice but to compensate other kingdoms in some way.

However, Stalian V wasn’t overly stressed by this; he had anticipated such an outcome from the moment he began investigating the incident and had prepared accordingly.

Even managing to settle reasonable compensation terms after extensive discussions during the bi-monthly emergency meeting.

Yet, his expression remained grim.

“I shouldn’t have interfered with Marquis Palatio back then—sigh,” Stalian V pinched the bridge of his nose.

Nothing had directly happened between him and Marquis Palatio since he hadn’t even seen the Marquis’s face after that day.

The real reason for his unease was Yuman.

Stalian V repeatedly thought back to the remarks Yuman had made during the meeting.

—Hmm, that’s so? I think it’s inadequate.

—Hmm, you should clearly apologize for this part. Passing it off so lightly doesn’t look good. Oh, wasn’t it the same last time?

—It almost sounds like you’re saying other countries are also to blame, which doesn’t sound good.

Yuman had relentlessly found faults and attacked every time Stalian V spoke.

Unable to understand Yuman’s persistent attitude, Stalian V was puzzled.

Although the Kingdom of Ashtalon and Rosario weren’t very close, their relationship was not bad, and the same was true with the saint.

Yet, this relationship seemed shattered by a single incident involving Marquis Palatio.

‘My head hurts,’ he thought, filled with doubts, ‘What exactly is the relationship between Marquis Palatio and him?’

It was odd that Saint Yuman would defend Marquis Palatio, who was closely connected to Archbishop Yutia, and although it wasn’t apparent, there was a mutual check between Archbishop Yutia and Saint Yuman of Rosario.

Therefore, Yuman’s seemingly supportive stance towards the Marquis was peculiar.

“That’s it. There must be something about Marquis Palatio… I should look into it,” Stalian V resolved firmly, unable to just let it go.

“Your Majesty, it’s time to join the meeting,” said a voice, prompting Stalian V to stand up.

His expression was more relaxed than before, as Saint Yuman would no longer participate in the meetings from today.

With a somewhat lighter heart, he proceeded to the conference hall, only to be met with the glaring golden eyes of a beastman from the Colony, staring as if to devour him.

“??”

Although he did not understand why such a look was directed at him, he soon recalled that she had a very close relationship with Marquis Palatio and let out a low sigh.

That day, Stalian V grimly vowed, “I really shouldn’t mess with Marquis Palatio.”

Despite the vow, unfortunately, Stalian V encountered many unhappy incidents in Tern over the next week, during the peak of winter.

Meanwhile, Alon had been back at his duchy for about two months, spending most of his time resting due to mana addiction.

Although his recovery was surprisingly quick, allowing him to move around without much difficulty after some time, he was still unable to use magic.

Thus, he could not engage in practical magic research, spending his days in rest.

Nonetheless, he wasn’t entirely idle as he had duties as the lord of his lands.

He had to deal with the piled-up and exceedingly tedious paperwork.

However, the process wasn’t too dull because of a sudden, unexpected victory.

“Ha ha ha ha, it’s a victory for me indeed.”

“Wait, what? How did this happen?”

“Foolish, to think you could defeat a god—it’s pure arrogance.”

It was because of Basiliora.

Alon looked at the two beings facing each other across a board game similar to chess.

Evan, with a shocked expression, and Basiliora, a small spiritual entity with a triumphant upper body.

The contrast between their fortunes was starkly apparent.

“Hey, let’s do it again.”

“Why should I redo it? Do you think I, of such noble stature, should stoop to rematch a lowly creature like you?”

“Enough of your nonsense. How can you boast about one win in thirty matches?!”

Evan’s voice was filled with injustice, and for once, Alon empathized with him.

Basiliora had lost to Evan more than thirty times and had been boastful about the one lucky win as if a novice had beaten an expert in a fighting game and called them inadequate.

“Ah, it’s so annoying dealing with this blockhead.”

“So, what can you do about it? You’re just shaking in your boots!”

Basiliora, with his mouth agape, curled up and lifted his small body, which was adorable at just 30cm tall due to being a spirit.

“Lord! Can’t you summon this creature?!”

“If I summon him at his actual size, this whole domain would be destroyed.”

“How about a smaller size, about my height?”

“No, I can’t.”

Alon genuinely wanted to materialize Basiliora to tease Evan, but unfortunately, it was impossible.

The limit for using the artifact ‘Wanderer’s Salvation’ was five years… or was it ten?

Alon glanced at his bracelet.

It had glowed bright red when summoning Basiliora, but now it was ominously dark, indicating a wait time of five to ten years before the artifact could be used again.

However, Alon wasn’t too concerned because there was another way to use the bracelet, having bypassed cooldowns in games through resets.

‘Maybe about half a year after the original story began?’

Alon shrugged as he thought about the character who could reset the cooldown of Salvation.

“Indeed, foolish humans can’t defeat me—”

“Lord, this guy flinches every time the central tower is mentioned. There might be something there; let’s send him there.”

“!? Wait, that’s underhanded—”

Recently, Alon had been keeping himself entertained by watching Evan and Basiliora play while working on paperwork.

As time passed, about four months later, Alon’s mana addiction gradually faded, allowing him to perform magic a couple of times and welcoming the warmth of spring instead of winter’s chill.

“Evan.”

“Yes?”

“When did we get an auction house in our domain?”

“I believe it was about four months ago. Didn’t you receive a report about it?”

“Yes, I remember that.”

“Why do you ask?”

Alon checked the figures in the documents again.

“It’s just that for something that started only a few months ago, it’s paying a lot of taxes.”

The reason Alon asked about the auction house despite knowing it existed was precisely because of the taxes.

“It’s only been three months, and the taxes are this high…?”

The amounts weren’t shockingly large, but the figures were significant considering it was just from a few months of operating an auction house.

“Evan.”

“Yes?”

“Can you bring the owner of the auction house here?”

“The owner?”

“Yes.”

Alon wanted to meet the auction house owner, thinking about developing the domain further.

Although he was somewhat naive about managing the domain, maintaining it wasn’t too difficult, given his experience with paperwork.

However, growing it was another matter.

The ducal finances were essentially breaking even, aside from the money Alon brought in.

Costs mostly consumed any additional revenue, achieving a net zero gain.

Therefore, he thought, ‘If the auction house is doing well, perhaps investing in it and expanding it into something like a tourism industry might be a good idea.’

Alon began forming a plan in his mind.

Alon needed to discuss business with the owner of the auction house.

Even if a plan seemed plausible, business was fraught with variables, and experience was known to make a difference.

Shortly after, through Evan, Alon had the owner summoned, and he was at a loss for words when he saw who it was.

“……Alexion?”

“Good to see you, my lord.”

It was all too familiar.

Alexion’s life had taken a turn for the worse from the moment he met Radan, the Pirate King.

Enduring numerous hardships and ultimately succumbing to Radan’s coercion(?), Alexion found himself at the ducal house, wondering what sins he had committed in a past life, though his current life was not without its faults either.

Nevertheless, there were days filled with gloom, but Alexion had eventually managed to turn his fortunes around.

His innate business acumen brilliantly caught on to the fact that many trade guilds frequented the Palatio ducal house, and in just a few months, he had established a thriving auction house from nothing.

“……Why are you here?”

“Ha ha, it just turned out this way.”

Alexion wanted to shout, ‘Your brother, the pirate, dragged me here by force!!!’ but he restrained himself.

After all, such a statement would not benefit him.

He had also been warned by Radan to behave if he wanted to live.

Given that he did not wish to die, being cautious with his words was natural.

Despite the circumstances potentially making it awkward, Alexion was quite pleased.

He roughly guessed why the Marquis had summoned him,

“……I’m not good with words, so I’ll speak bluntly. I want to invest to grow our domain. May I hear your thoughts?”

This was precisely the discussion Alexion had anticipated from the Marquis.

Normally, it would be premature to rejoice, but knowing the Marquis’s intentions through Radan, the Marquis’s words sounded to Alexion like, ‘I want to give you money.’

Regardless of what the Marquis was thinking, Alexion was confident in his ability to secure investment through his own skill.

So, he thought, ‘How should I approach this? Maybe start by linking it to a tourism venture and then suggest expanding the auction house?’

While considering how to charm the Marquis, who was not antagonistic towards him, Alexion smiled inwardly.

Although he wasn’t insane enough to scam someone connected to the Pirate King, he could probably get a bit more than he initially expected.

“Ahem—”

Just as Alexion cleared his throat, his eyes caught something outside the window.

A woman with blond hair and dark clothes was perched on a tree outside, staring intently at Alexion.

Upon making eye contact, she promptly pulled a magical device from her bosom.

And then, as she slightly smiled, the device emitted light, projecting an image in front of Alexion.

His expression instantly hardened.

The image showed Radan looking back at him with a stern and solemn expression.

“……”

Clouds of gloom once again shrouded Alexion’s face.

“Why, why are you silent?”

“Hmm.”

“Say something, anything!”

I had been staring blankly at the newspaper, unable to comprehend the unexpected hero treatment, but I quickly snapped out of it when I heard Cecil’s anxious voice from the front.

“Setting aside the fact that you’ve suddenly become a hero, what exactly is your relationship with Lady Meredia?”

“….”

“Why would a lowly count family like ours be involved in a marriage discussion with such an incredible house?”

She was staring intently at me, her usual manner of speaking now much more precise and deliberate.

“No matter how I think about it, it’s just too strange….”

“…Is that so?”

“Hik.”

But as soon as I responded in a low voice, she flinched and began to stammer.

“W-what exactly are you plotting…?”

Eventually, she lowered her gaze and trailed off.

‘My little sister is great, but this is something she needs to fix.’

Now that I think about it, Cecil has always tended to stutter whenever she speaks with me.

Since she speaks just fine with her friends and the servants, it seems she only does this with people she finds awkward or difficult to deal with—like me.

Of course, a minor flaw like that isn’t enough to diminish her many talents, but noble society thrives on picking apart weaknesses.

Naturally, if anyone were to mock my sister for such a trivial matter, I wouldn’t forgive them as her guardian.

However, I can’t always be there to protect her.

That’s why I need to help her overcome this on her own.

“…Cecil.”

“……!”

“I’ve told you this over and over again.”

Pushing aside my concerns about the article for now, I gently placed my hands on her shoulders and spoke in the softest voice I could manage.

“If you don’t want to be looked down upon, speak properly.”

“I-I got it….”

“Alright then, try saying it again.”

She trembled slightly for a moment, then took a deep breath.

Though her voice was still weak, she managed to finish her sentence properly.

“…W-what exactly are you plotting?”

“See? You can do it if you try.”

As expected, my sister is someone who gets things done when she puts her mind to it.

If she continues practicing like this, she’ll surely become a great family head and restore our house’s prestige in the future.

“Good job, my little sister.”

“Ugh.”

“But there’s no need to use honorifics with me. It makes me a little sad….”

“J-just answer my question.”

Feeling proud of her, I gently ruffled her hair.

But when Cecil clenched her fists and demanded an answer, I smiled and finally spoke.

“This is all for you and our family.”

“…What?”

Until just moments ago, I’d been vaguely anxious about my sudden rise to fame across the empire.

Of course, my shock at the completely unexpected situation was greater, but having my existence exposed to the world did increase the potential risks.

“The engagement with Lady Meredia is real. We finalized the details a few days ago.”

“T-then that means….”

“Yes, it means I’m finally going to start moving in earnest.”

Since things had already come this far, it was better to take full advantage of the situation rather than be controlled by whoever revealed my name.

Right now, I’m managing to hold my ground thanks to the engagement with Meredia, but no one knows what the future holds.

To prepare for any possibility, I need to start making my mark on the world.

“And for that, I’m willing to do whatever it takes.”

With that firm resolution in mind, I revealed my plans to Cecil with a serious expression.

“…….”

As expected, she swallowed dryly, her face a mix of worry and fear.

Honestly, my sister is just too kind for her own good.

“Of course, there’s no need to worry.”

Feeling a sense of warmth inside, I patted her shoulder and smiled brightly.

“You just have to sit back and watch your big brother shine.”

“…Let me ask you one thing.”

She bit her lip, staring at me for a long moment before speaking in a quiet voice.

“You had nothing to do with the disappearance of the Crown Prince’s fiancée, right?”

At that sharp question, my smiling expression momentarily froze.

“…Brother?”

“Ah, of course not. Why would I do something like that for someone else’s benefit…”

Seeing Cecil’s wavering eyes as she called my name, I quickly regained my composure and answered as naturally as possible.

– Thud!

Right at that moment, a suspicious sound rumbled from the wardrobe in the room.

“W-what was that just now?”

“Hmm?”

“Didn’t you hear something from the wardrobe?”

Cecil, startled by the eerily perfect timing, looked at me with a puzzled expression.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Brother, don’t tell me….”

“Anyway, isn’t it about time for breakfast? Why don’t we eat together for once—”

Avoiding her gaze, I tried to usher her out of the room before she could dwell on it further.

– Thud! Thud!

This time, two even clearer sounds echoed from within the wardrobe.

“Eek!”

“Oh dear.”

With the swift movements befitting the youngest Silver-ranked knight trainee, Cecil beat me to the wardrobe.

Her expression tense, she cautiously reached out her hand.

– Creeeak…

However, before she could touch it, the wardrobe door slowly opened on its own.

“…Excuse me.”

To my immense relief, the one who appeared inside, panting and disheveled, was none other than Runiel.

“R-Runiel.”

Just as I was about to sigh in relief that the worst-case scenario hadn’t occurred, I noticed Cecil frozen in place, hand still outstretched toward the wardrobe.

She stared at Runiel in shock as the knight calmly closed the wardrobe door again.

Come to think of it, Cecil admired Runiel a great deal as a knight.

From what Alfred told me, when Runiel was working as a maid in the estate a few days ago, Cecil had taken great care of her.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if she liked Runiel more than me.

“Commander Runiel!”

Feeling momentarily sulky at that thought, I watched as Cecil ran toward Runiel, her eyes brimming with tears.

“You must not address me that way. I now belong to Sir Whitney…”

“Don’t say that! Weren’t you the one who said that knights should be judged by their skills, not their ranks? A-and do you know how much you’ve helped me…?”

Come to think of it, Silver-ranked knight trainees often led lower-ranked knights.

So, was Cecil serving under Runiel as her captain? No wonder she treated her so well—it was more than just admiration.

“But, why were you inside the wardrobe?”

“That is…”

“Now that I think about it, this is my brother’s room. Why…?”

Just as my sullen expression began to ease, Cecil’s eyes suddenly narrowed.

“Ah.”

Her gaze flickered between Runiel’s disheveled hair and clothes, the awkwardly rearranged blanket where Hestia had been lying until just moments ago, and then finally settled on me.

“……Trash.”

She shot me a look of pure contempt before spitting out her icy condemnation in the coldest voice imaginable.

“Die.”

“Cecil? This is a misunderstanding…”

“Die. Die. Die.”

In an instant, I had become nothing more than a depraved villain in her mind.

I broke into a cold sweat, desperately trying to explain myself.

“You seem to have misunderstood something. Sir Whitney and I were merely engaging in standard training here.”

“T-training? What kind of training could you possibly do in a bedroom…?”

“…And besides, I was the one who asked for it, so you don’t need to worry.”

Runiel, who had been quietly observing, suddenly made the worst possible attempt at clearing up the misunderstanding.

“Y-you asked for it?”

“That’s right.”

“W-why?”

Unaware of the chaos she was causing, Runiel assumed her explanation had worked.

With a perfectly serious expression, she drove the final nail into the coffin of Cecil’s misunderstanding.

“Following the orders of a superior being is a fundamental instinct of all living creatures.”

“……”

“You may not understand it yet, Cecil, but when you grow up, you will naturally come to realize it.”

As Runiel finished her words with a gentle smile, Cecil’s once-burning eyes gradually dulled and died.

No, this is really a misunderstanding.

But trying to deny it now might make it even worse.

“I’ve decided.”

While I was frantically searching for a way to salvage the situation, a determined voice rang in my ears.

“I’m going to become the family head, no matter what.”

I didn’t know what exactly had changed in her mind, but Cecil’s previously lifeless eyes were now burning with determination.

“I will defeat you and become the family head. And then, I will save the captain…!”

“Haha, Cecil….”

Despite the circumstances, I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear.

“You want to become the family head?”

This was the first time my sister had ever declared such an ambition.

“Alright, give it your best shot.”

I had refrained from bringing it up before, worried she might be resistant to the idea.

But hearing it from her own mouth like this was beyond my expectations.

I was so moved that I nearly teared up, but I held my emotions in check and cheered her on.

“If you think you can, that is.”

For Cecil’s sake, I was willing to bear this false reputation.

Sure, my image might take a hit, but I could clear things up later.

“You’re talking big now, but just wait and see.”

Imagining a future where Cecil stood as the family head, I was lost in thought when she suddenly clenched her lips, glared up at me, and stormed toward the door.

“When I win the next Imperial Rising Star Tournament, that smug smile of yours will disappear!”

Wait—what? That’s not good!

If Meredia was right and the tournament was going to be held again soon, that meant a whole mountain of elite playable characters would be participating.

Even for Cecil, that would be—

– Bang!

My worried expression deepened as I snapped back to reality at the loud slam of the door.

Cecil declaring her participation in the tournament was a concern, but right now, I had more immediate problems.

“Hah.”

Letting out a quiet sigh, I turned toward the wardrobe, where the ominous sound had come from earlier.

“This is driving me insane.”

I opened the wardrobe door—the same one Runiel had hastily shut—and pressed my fingers to my throbbing forehead.

“…I’m sorry. I was forced to act quickly when she regained consciousness inside the wardrobe….”

“Mmph! Mmph!”

The Imperial Crown Prince’s missing fiancée.

The future Saintess.

A crucial figure whose cooperation was essential for the peace and stability of the world—

And there she was, bound with a blanket and gagged with a pillowcase inside my wardrobe.

“Mmph….”

Her muffled groan stopped as soon as she saw us.

Her face was filled with undeniable terror.

“Well, at least your sister didn’t find out, so that’s a relief.”

“A relief… is that really the word for this?”

How the hell was I supposed to fix this?

***

Meanwhile, at that very moment— in the courtyard of the Lingard Count’s estate.

“That… that must’ve been a dream, right?”

Sasha, who had stopped by the wake at dawn and witnessed something utterly shocking, had been unable to sleep all night.

Now, with dark circles under her eyes, she listlessly swept the courtyard.

“H-honestly, no matter how bold the young master is, he wouldn’t actually do something like that….”

She tried her best to block out the chatter of the servants, who had been buzzing about the Crown Prince’s missing fiancée since early morning.

– Clop. Clop. Clop.

Just then, a cloud of dust rose in the distance, accompanied by the sound of galloping hooves.

“Huh? Who would be coming this early…?”

“There it is.”

“H-hiiik!”

As knights in gleaming armor appeared at the estate’s entrance, Sasha’s hands trembled, and she dropped her broom.

“You there.”

Her pitiful, trembling form must have stood out.

The man leading the knights noticed her and gestured.

“Where is Sir Whitney?”

“I-I don’t know anything! Please spare me!”

“?”

“….?”

The knight tilted his head at her bizarre response, then cleared his throat and spoke again.

“No need to be alarmed. We’re not here with bad news.”

“R-really?”

She cautiously opened one eye and asked in a timid voice.

“I am merely here to deliver a message from His Majesty the Emperor.”

“Hiieeek!”

As soon as she heard the word “Emperor,” Sasha’s tiny heart couldn’t take it.

Letting out a deflated gasp, she squeezed her eyes shut once again.

Round 265

A structure resembling traces of an ancient civilization.

However, it was very small. It looked like something that dwarfs might have lived in.

“Who could have lived here?”

It seemed to have eroded away, now just a relic of the past.

Mostly made of stone, it was cracked and covered with vines.

“How fascinating!”

“It’s interesting.”

Before forgetting, I installed a portal first as I was exploring the area with the kids.

“Shall we go back once?”

There was no rush since the main objective was achieved, and the island was much larger than I initially expected, which was also a concern.

It felt like it would take several more days to explore the whole island.

-Lord! Lord! Look at this!

Frey called me from afar.

Since all the children were gathered, I approached with curiosity.

“Look at this! There are so many slimes!”

“Huh?”

There were stone statues there.

And as Ara said, they were shaped like slimes.

Honestly, they could be seen just as round statues, but as the slime lord, I determined these were indeed modeled after slimes.

“Huh.”

-Could this place have originally been inhabited by slimes?

I nodded at Mammon’s guess.

Originally, this place was a dungeon owned by Ara.

As Ara was the owner, it was likely that slimes had lived here.

“It was different from other dungeons.”

The dungeon of Greed had goblins.

The dungeon of Wrath had gnolls.

The dungeon of Lust had the breeding tribe.

All were primarily inhabited by residents of the dungeons.

However, for some reason, the dungeon of Gluttony did not show any native slimes except for the ones I brought.

Where could they all have gone?

‘They might be gathered somewhere, but it’s too big for me to find…!’

Or perhaps this was originally a slime habitat.

But how did slimes get up to an island floating in the sky?

Anyway, it was full of mysteries.

-I found something!

Ras, sniffing around, exclaimed.

Excited, everyone rushed over, and there was something unexpected there.

“This is…”

It looked like an old field, much worn over time, but I, a farmer, could tell.

It was a field.

“Wow.”

“This is fun!”

-Really, someone must have lived here.

-I want to find too!

It felt like discovering a hidden civilization.

While wondering what they might have grown here, Ara found something else.

“Something’s growing here!”

“Where?”

Looking where Ara pointed, I saw a plant with a peculiar shape growing among the weeds and vines in the messed-up field.

It had a thick stem and something hanging at the end, either a fruit or a bud, shining.

“It’s fascinating.”

The curled ends looked almost like candy, especially with the light shining from it.

“Did someone grow this, or did it just sprout from a seed that flew here by chance?”

“I want to try it!”

Ara, too, drooled over the plant, seeing it for the first time.

It definitely seemed like an item.

I casually checked to see if an item indicator appeared.

[???]

A rare plant that grows in places with low temperatures and thin air.

Difficult to grow.

Consumption greatly replenishes mana.

“Definitely an item.”

As guessed by its appearance, it was indeed an extraordinary plant.

According to the description, it couldn’t be taken and grown elsewhere; it could only be cultivated here on this sky island in winter.

‘Is this place also a high-altitude area?’

Not a high mountain but a high island, regardless.

I wondered what else could be grown here.

After taking a brief look around with the children, we returned to the village.

It seemed that Mother and Father went home as Seon-ah, Jae-seong, and Orie were there.

“Ah, you’re back.”

Seon-ah, who had been playing with Soo, greeted us on our return.

“We went up.”

“Huh? You went up?! Can I go too?”

“Yeah. Let’s go up together later.”

After sharing this news with Jae-seong and Orie, unlike Seon-ah who had seen the island, the two were very curious.

We had a light meal and then started exploring the island again.

Entering the portal to the island, people were surprised by the unexpected landscape.

Soon, everyone was speechless at the sight of the dungeon seen from above the island.

“I’ve felt this before, but how big is this dungeon? I’ve never seen a dungeon of this scale in any records.”

It was indeed a puzzling part for me too.

Although I don’t know about other dungeons, having entered dungeons of two other Deadly Sins made Seon-ah’s words feel even more realistic.

-The Dungeon of Gluttony is naturally the largest.

Then Mammon appeared, shrugging.

It seemed that the Deadly Sins had known each other for a long time and might know something.

-This is all stuff that Ara ate in the past!

“Gasp.”

It felt like a shocking truth had been uncovered.

So, all this land was actually eaten by Ara?

-But you don’t have to worry too much! The things that were eaten did not die; they lived well inside!

“Is that really something not to worry about?”

-Um, to explain further, this dungeon is practically like the inside of Ara’s stomach.

“Eh?”

-Ara kept shedding and growing larger, and eventually became the dungeon itself. To be precise, she became a world of her own!

Amidst these shocking revelations, I looked around in a daze.

So, all this is technically inside Ara’s stomach?

-I’m not sure why it became so small, but as far as I know, that’s the case. All of this is the dungeons that Ara swallowed.

“Huh…….”

Wait, wait.

Let’s think about this.

Ara, who grew larger as she shed her skin.

Was there a trace of her eating the World Tree before?

‘When you think about it, the traces inside the World Tree were small compared to the skins that Cheong shed.’

In terms of timeline, did Ara eat the inside of the World Tree, shed her skin which was in that mine, and kept growing, eventually swallowing her own dungeon and others as well?

So, ultimately Ara herself became this dungeon, and all this is inside Ara’s stomach…………?

It was complicated.

It seemed hard to believe.

“I am 3,501 years old!”

Suddenly, Ara approached, proudly puffing out her chest and exclaiming.

-Back then, Gula, no, Ara was incredible.

Soon, Ras also nodded in agreement.

Then Ashu added,

-Ashu liked that Ara would eat anything! Teehee!

Don’t talk like it’s a garbage disposal.

Anyway, it seemed like there was some explanation for why the Dungeon of Gluttony was unusually large.

Assuming Mammon’s assumption was correct.

‘I still can’t believe it.’

Meanwhile, Seon-ah, hearing the children’s talk, seemed to think it was a joke and didn’t believe it, probably because we hadn’t told her about the Deadly Sins.

Even hiding the fact of being a Deadly Sin from the family, somehow it had not been revealed.

“How big was our Ara, then?”

“This biiiiig!”

Ara, spreading her arms wide and flailing, was adorable. Eventually, I couldn’t resist and picked Ara up, rubbing her cheek.

“Kyaha!”

“That’s right. Our Ara was this big.”

“Yes!”

After unexpectedly learning the dungeon’s secret(?), we continued exploring the island.

Whatever the old stories were, she was practically my daughter now. I was curious, but it was just curiosity and didn’t really affect me much.

After taking a brief look around the island together, we decided to build something.

First, we selected a plot of land to be our base camp, choosing an empty space between the field and the ruins.

Through the portal, we transported building materials, and brought along Kkumuris, the gnolls, and the goblins.

Click-clack.

The building was constructed diligently.

We initially thought about setting up tents, but since this place also seemed like it would become a new base, we started proper construction.

Thump-thump.

“From here to here. That’s right. Yeah.”

I had become as familiar with being a construction foreman as I was with farming, effectively showing off the expertise I had gained from building the gnoll village.

“It’s going smooth!”

Ara also helped by carrying logs on her shoulder.

In just a few hours, a simple base camp was completed.

“Wow, amazing.”

Jae-seong, who had been helping out a bit, was impressed.

Apparently, the goblins and gnolls had improved their skills, adeptly taking on the roles of carpenters and construction workers.

“Brother, should we get help from the kids when we build the dining hall?”

“Is that so?”

No, no matter how you look at it, comparing them to someone who has been in the construction industry for over ten years is a bit…

I wanted to build a fancy dining hall, especially since dining facilities require special equipment, so I preferred to leave it to real professionals.

Instead, we agreed that they would help with minor tasks.

“It’s comfortable.”

Cheong, who had settled into a hammock we had installed, was swinging leisurely with Ara by her side.

-Lord, how about making this place into a village for the rabbit folks?

“Hmm, I’ll have to think about that. Since the breeding tribe are chefs, it might be better if they lived near us.”

-That makes sense!

Of course, they were only a portal away, but it was something to consider.

With the island being so vast, there was more than enough space for over a thousand rabbits to live comfortably.

-Ashu wants to live next to Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ‘s food storage.

When I asked Ashu for her opinion, a cute response came back. Indeed, it would be inconvenient here for cooking and getting ingredients.

Thinking of building a new village right next to Slime Village, we took a short break at the completed base camp.

“The sky feels closer.”

The stars seemed close enough to touch.

It wasn’t an exaggeration; they really did seem much closer.

As I lay there gazing at the stars, seemingly bored, Ara and Cheong suddenly ran off.

“Don’t go too far.”

“Okay!”

Since they were visible on the minimap, there was no risk of them getting lost.

The portal made it easy for the kids and others to come and go.

As I was dozing off, someone grabbed my arm and shook it.

“Dad, Dad.”

“Uh-huh?”

Cheong was holding my arm.

I wondered what was going on, but since he didn’t seem urgent, I stretched and got up.

“What’s up, Cheong?”

“Sister found something.”

“What did she find?”

Cheong kept pulling on my arm.

Pretending to give in, I got up and followed him, and soon I saw several slimes that had apparently come up as well.

“Hello guys, you came up too?”

Gloop!

But the slimes’ reaction was odd.

They all seemed overly excited as if they had been waiting for me.

Wondering what was going on, I let Cheong lead the way, and the slimes followed me.

“What’s going on, really?”

“Sister found it.”

“Hmm, what did she find?”

“Sister’s old friends.”

“Old friends?”

I couldn’t understand what she meant at all.

Is a child still just a child?

Before I knew it, we had gone quite far from the camp.

Then, finally, I saw other children gathered in a huddle in the distance.

“Hey kids, what are you doing?”

-Lord! You’ve arrived!

Frey flapped over and landed on Cheong’s head.

Then she waved her arms cutely and exclaimed.

-We found slimes!

“Slimes?”

Ho…….

Were there slimes on this sky island?

I quickly ran over.

Then Ara, seeing me running, turned around and waved.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong !”

“Hey! I’m here!”

“Look at this!”

Ara lifted something up.

As Frey said, it was a slime.

But its appearance was somewhat unique.

Of course, slimes’ appearances change a bit through synthesis, but this one was unique in a different way.

Glooop?

Tired-looking eyes.

A barely visible mouth.

It was a slime with eyes and a mouth.

But somehow, it fit very well.

‘It feels like something I’ve seen in a game…? Leaf story…’

Cough.

As I looked closely at this curious sight, the ability of the Slime Lord activated.

[Ancient Slime LV.1]

This is an ancient slime, now on the brink of extinction.

[Liquid synthesis possible]

“Ancient… slime?”

In the dark of night, at the front of the Merkiliane estate.

Despite having occurred weeks ago, the traces of a fierce battle still linger in the estate.

Under the blue moonlight, ‘that thing’ wearing a black robe appeared.

Like before, he quietly looked towards the outer castle, which was unguarded, then turned his gaze and calmly walked on.

Thud, thud—a pace neither too large nor too small, neither too fast nor too slow, just right.

The first place it reached was where the artificial Outer gods and Basiliora had fought.

Next, it went to the spot where Marquis Palatio had been, and finally, it stopped where Duke Komalon had been lying down and vanished into dust with his eyes closed.

Staring at that area, its face, which had always carried a smile, now showed a mix of expressions.

It maintained a blank expression but also let out a small laugh.

Then, its expression turned cloudy before twisting into a strange smirk.

“And so, the half-baked mage only made it this far,” it muttered in a tone that could be a sigh.

“Well, it doesn’t matter. There’s a new character of interest now, so I might as well keep watching.”

It turned and disappeared into the darkness.

“Is he really the material or not,” an odd language vanished with the wind, leaving no one behind.

***

After everything, on the way back to the Palatio estate.

Alon looked out the window at the arriving winter with a relaxed expression.

‘There’s still cleanup to do, but that’s not my concern.’

“My lord.”

“What is it?”

“You’ve been quite pensive lately,” said Evan, who had entered the carriage for the night.

Alon shrugged.

“I have a lot to think about.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes.”

Now that his body had recovered and he had been busy immediately responding to a summons from Tern, he finally had time to think about what needed to be done.

“Duke Komalon, the dark ones, the border, magic… Which should I investigate first?”

Or rather, he needed to understand what Duke Komalon meant by ‘they are coming’.

According to all the information Alon had gathered, the identity of ‘they’ seemed to be the ‘Five Great Sins’.

“Hmm.”

It was an important issue for Alon.

He had made efforts to prevent the Five Great Sins from descending into this world.

‘Honestly, I didn’t struggle to the death, but I did raise the children who could become the Five Great Sins well so they’d grow up normally.’

“Well, I raised them right, right?”

He suddenly felt anxious recalling the sins he had encountered, but soon calmed his mind and continued his thoughts.

What was crucial for Alon at this point was the fact that despite raising the kids well, the Five Great Sins might still appear.

‘Honestly, it’s dubious.’

Could such a thing happen?

He was slightly skeptical.

The Five Great Sins were supposed to appear because the villains who served as their vessels had turned evil.

Since, according to the game information Alon knew, Yutia and others had mostly not turned evil and grew up fine, it seemed there was virtually no chance for the Five Great Sins to appear.

However, Alon couldn’t just ignore Duke Komalon’s words.

Having glimpsed a bit of this world’s hidden fragments, Alon knew that things didn’t operate like the game settings suggested.

“…”

Alon recalled his conversation with Duke Komalon.

The look in Duke Komalon’s eyes wasn’t that of a madman believing in delusions, but rather of someone facing a grim reality.

‘Was it the south of the border…’

He recalled the words Duke Komalon had spoken.

The south of the border.

Literally the stage of Psychedelia, between the Union Kingdom and the Empire of Calypsophobia, Alon had originally planned to visit it at least once.

‘…If the Five Great Sins were to descend, it would be a must-visit place.’

As he recalled the wasteland the users called Badland, he revisited Duke Komalon’s words.

—Go to the southern border of the east end. With the crest you received, you might get some help. You might also see the truth.

After pondering with a sigh, he made up his mind.

‘I’ll move as soon as my body recovers.’

The issue related to the Five Great Sins was extremely important.

Additionally, he grew curious about Duke Komalon.

‘Well, first I’ll recover, and when I go to the border, it will almost be two years… Then I can visit the Colony and ask about the rituals Duke Komalon mentioned.’

With that thought settled,

“Lord.”

“What?”

“Would you like some sweet potatoes?”

“Yes.”

As he ate the sweet potato handed over by Evan, Alon watched the white snowflakes falling outside the carriage window.

“Oh, it’s snowing.”

“Indeed.”

He chewed on the sweet potato as the first snow fell.

Whether because of the snow or not, the sweet potato tasted even better than usual.

And as time passed,

About two weeks later, Alon arrived at the Palatio estate.

The next day.

He briefly received a report from Evan on the situation of the estate, and his eyes widened.

“Is this all the treasures sent from the Merkiliane estate?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“Yes, all of it.”

This was because, when he had arrived at the estate the day before, he had not fully seen the carriages filled with treasures, more than five in total.

Alon, with a blank expression, went forward and opened one of the carriages.

Chrrrrrrr~

As soon as he opened the carriage, treasures spilled out.

Watching the coins quickly turn the white snow into gold,

“Wow~”

Evan, watching by the side, involuntarily let out a gasp, and Alon did the same.

Though his expression was usually unreadable and calm on the surface, Alon was quite astonished at the moment.

“This is… a lot?”

Of course, it wasn’t the first time Alon had received such gifts.

He had received similar presents from Carmaxes III in the Colony and also rewards from the Kingdom of Rosario.

But usually, while he received treasures, he had never received so many coins.

‘How much is this, really? Why so much?’

Alon, with his mouth agape, was puzzled.

Of course, it was true that Alon was the hero who saved the Merkiliane estate.

If he hadn’t, the estate would indeed have vanished.

But this seemed a bit too much…

‘Filian, now that I see, you’re indeed a friend who makes sure to repay.’

He gratefully accepted the gold coins.

Having more money is always better, and it’s a virtue not to refuse gifts given.

‘Well, after all, the Merkiliane estate is wealthy.’

Knowing the situation, Alon decided to accept the gift without any burden.

“Lord.”

“What is it?”

“If it’s not too much trouble, may I have one gold coin?”

“Granted specially.”

After giving Evan a gold coin, Alon hummed to himself for a while as he looked at the carriage filled with gold coins.

He was hungry and his fingertips were tingling from mana addiction, but now he felt somewhat healthier.

A smile naturally came to his face.

This was the first day Alon returned to the estate.

At that time, in the office of the Merkiliane estate:

“I wonder if the gifts arrived safely?”

“Yes, they probably did.”

“That’s good.”

As Filian nodded, his secretary Kulan soon opened his mouth.

“But sir, Duke, are you sure it’s okay?”

“What is?”

“The gifts. In the situation where we need to restore the estate right away, is it really okay to send so much money…”

The secretary’s worried murmuring.

His concern was valid, but Filian shook his head decisively.

“Merkiliane estate would have perished if Marquis Palatio had not stopped Duke Komalon. Then, Kulan and I wouldn’t have been able to sit here like this.”

“……That’s correct.”

“Moreover, a favor must be repaid properly. Even if that amount of money disappears immediately, we still have enough to manage this situation, right?”

“That’s also true, but still, there might be unforeseen circumstances.”

“Kulan.”

“Yes.”

“We don’t need to calculate when repaying a favor. If we can repay it now, we just do it. Father would have done the same.”

With those resolute words, Kulan, who had been silent for a while, said,

“I misspoke.”

He bowed his head in apology and went out to attend to his duties.

After sending Kulan off, Filian leaned back in his chair with a sigh.

“It’s tough-”

His face, relaxed now, contrasted with the stern expression he had just shown.

In truth, his demeanor while dealing with Kulan had been nothing more than an act.

‘I really don’t want to do this.’

Frankly, Filian wanted to quit acting as soon as possible.

However, he continued because of his younger brother Gilan Merkiliane.

Initially, Filian had intended to pass the dukedom to his brother.

Despite his appalling social skills, he was quite good at self-assessment, aware that he was not the right person to lead the estate.

Filian had planned to transfer the dukedom to his brother immediately,

‘But the estate needs a core until it stabilizes,’ he thought after hearing his brother’s words.

So, he decided to act as the successor until the estate stabilized.

Even he, who was not very perceptive, knew that the estate’s condition right after being attacked by the artificial Outer gods was not good financially and otherwise.

—If the estate is all sorted out later and my brother wants to pass the dukedom to me, then I will follow in his footsteps.

Filian recalled Gilan’s words as he looked out the window.

And suddenly thought, ‘Ah, I want to learn magic.’

He hadn’t been interested in magic until now.

Why?

He simply hadn’t been interested in the discipline of magic, and he was so absorbed in swordsmanship that nothing else caught his eye.

But lately, Filian had been very interested in magic.

It was all because of Marquis Palatio.

“……”

Filian closed his eyes.

What appeared as soon as he closed them—

The image of Marquis Palatio summoning a deity after dealing with the artificial Outer gods.

And the Marquis blocking a meteor shower in the sky.

Lastly, the splendid, radiant line created from Marquis Palatio’s fingertips.

“Wow~”

Filian marveled again, recalling that moment.

It was his 23rd sigh of admiration just for today.

Lately, he had been spending his days admiring and revisiting the magic used by Marquis Palatio.

He thought about it almost all day long, and far from getting tired of it, these days, recalling the Marquis’s image made Filian feel like a young child who had just picked up a sword, full of childlike innocence.

To that extent, Filian had come to admire Marquis Palatio.

Not just admire, lately Filian had even been looking up first-tier magic books.

Because he wanted to learn magic.

So, Filian also wanted to become like Marquis Palatio.

Of course, as he was not really a child, Filian knew that as a Sword Master, he could become strong like the Marquis because he had the talent.

But what Filian wanted wasn’t just ‘to become strong.’

He simply wanted to be like the Marquis.

Like the Marquis using magic in that ashen world.

“……”

Of course, Filian knew well that it wouldn’t be easy.

The Marquis’s magical skills were fundamentally different from any wizard he knew, and above all, the two eyes behind the Marquis assured him that the Marquis was a very powerful wizard.

Yet still, Filian wanted to excel as a wizard.

Despite knowing how difficult the path might be, or that he might not even reach it at all.

That’s why, even though he had reached Sword Master, he had started learning magic.

“……If only I had talent in magic as well.”

At that moment, as he murmured this wish,

“Ah.”

Filian suddenly thought of something.

‘……Should I erect a statue?’

It was a sudden thought that came to him because he had come to admire Marquis Palatio so much.

However,

“……That might not be a bad idea.”

Considering that it was true that Marquis Palatio had saved the Merkiliane estate, allowing it to continue, Filian unwittingly hummed and nodded his head, and in a short moment, a not particularly logical or rational conclusion formed in Filian’s mind.

“Well, it should be fine to do this much before handing over the position to my brother, right…?”

He seemed to have made up his mind as he rose from his seat.

And exactly one month later, in the central square of the Merkiliane estate, a statue of Marquis Palatio using magic was erected, and it wasn’t long before the news reached Alon, who was suffering from mana addiction.

“……My statue?”

“Yes.”

“……Why would they erect my statue in the Merkiliane estate…?”

“Well, I don’t really know either……………?”

Alon was at a loss for words, and most of the nobility who heard the news were just as baffled.

Even though the Marquis had saved the estate, erecting a statue seemed a bit excessive.

However, that was merely the standard of other nobles.

“……A statue?”

“Yes.”

“Hmm-”

Deus Maccalian, one of Caliban’s Swords, muttered,

“I’m envious.”

“Excuse me……?”

“Should I do it too…………….”

“Excuse me……???”

He genuinely muttered, as if he was truly envious.

The vice-captain, upon hearing Deus talking about the Marquis, once again found himself at a loss for words.

Round 264

Prev | TOC | Next

The sky island in the distance was much farther away than it appeared. It took a whole day of running to finally arrive right under the sky island.

“Wow.”

“It’s scary.”

It was an island of truly overwhelming size. Up close, it was so large that it couldn’t be fully seen in one view. How could something like this float in the sky? I heard about a stone called ‘floatstone’ before—could this island be made entirely of floatstone?

“Can we get up there?”

As I looked up and muttered, Frey flapped excitedly and struck a fighting pose.

-“I’ll try going up there myself!”

“Can you make it?”

-“Of course!”

Frey then flapped her wings vigorously and ascended. Chirpy, who came along, flew slowly by Frey’s side.

-“Why not climb up using that vine?”

As we watched Frey soar, Mammon pointed something out.

There were long vines hanging from the island, although they were still at a considerable height.

Standing still and watching wasn’t enough, so we moved toward where the vines were.

“It’s high.”

As expected, the vines were located at a great height. Frey was flying hard, just reaching a suitable position.

-“Ashu will try to jump!”

The attempt to reach the vine began immediately. Ashu, who had the best jumping ability, went first.

But no matter how good Ashu’s jumping was, it was impossible to reach such a high vine…

Phew!

Flapping.

Thump!

“Uh?”

It almost touched it.

No way, it was almost as high as a skyscraper, and it almost reached it?

-“Too bad! Ashu, try a few more times, you might make it!”

“That’s incredible!”

“It’s really amazing!”

To think that’s a reachable height…

It seemed I had underestimated the Seven Deadly Sins too much.

After all, even those who awaken to the level 8 caused a frenzy among nations to recruit them, let alone the higher level, the Level 9 awakeners, who couldn’t defeat even one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

A boss monster of a Level 9 dungeon.

They seemed so cute that it was easy to forget, but they were arguably the strongest beings on Earth.

-Hup!

Another leap!

And this time, she finally grabbed the end of the vine.

“Wow! Crazy.”

“Ashu caught it!”

-Hmm, maybe I should try too.

Eventually, Ashu succeeded in grabbing the vine.

She jumped with such force, like Superman kicking off the ground, and she succeeded.

‘The ground Ashu jumped from burst open.’

I glanced to the side, and the ground where Ashu had stepped had completely collapsed, even showing cracks.

Soon, Ras was spurred on by competitive spirit and followed in Ashu’s footsteps.

Boom!

With a tremendous roar, Ras soared up like a superhero, although he couldn’t jump as grotesquely high as Ashu.

Of course, the jump was impressive enough to drop jaws.

-“That’s a pity.”

Ras gave up easily.

Meanwhile, Ashu was climbing even higher.

“Ashu! It’s dangerous, be careful!!”

Ah, why am I worrying about her?

Still, falling from that height would be worrying, even for Ashu.

Just in case, I took out various camping gear from Bokkeum and laid them out where Ashu might fall to cushion her landing.

I stacked sleeping bags layer by layer, and piled up tents that hadn’t been set up yet…

“Ah, I should just set up the portal here for now.”

Once the portal was installed, the kids were all cheering for Ashu.

“Give it your all!”

“You can do it!”

-“Conquer the end for me.”

-“But can you really get to the top of the island if you climb up all the way?”

At a glance, Frey and Ashu were about at the same height.

Frey could fly but was quite slow, while Ashu, climbing the vine, was faster.

“It’s going to take a while, isn’t it?”

Still, it was a long way up to the island. It seemed like it would take several more hours at this rate.

Then someone came through the portal.

I thought it must be Seon-ah, and it really was her.

“Kids, I’m here.”

“Seon-ah! You’re here. Ashu is climbing up there.”

“……What is this place?”

Seon-ah, who had just arrived, was shocked to see the island floating in the sky and checked on Ashu climbing vigorously and Frey flapping beside her.

“Oh, brother! Is this the Sky Island?”

“Yeah. The kids are trying to get up first.”

Meanwhile, Ashu seemed to have gotten the hang of it as her speed gradually increased.

Eventually, the flying Frey was hanging onto Ashu’s back.

-“I’m speeding up!”

-“Run, Ashu!”

It made me sweat nervously.

Thus, contrary to my expectation that it would take hours, Ashu was able to reach the end in just one hour.

But the problem was what came next.

-“It’s blocked!”

Ashu’s voice echoed from afar.

It seemed the vine had penetrated the center of the island and ended at the bottom of the island.

If the vine had flowed from the edge of the island, it would have been no problem to climb up, but that wasn’t the case.

“Isn’t there another vine nearby?!!”

As I shouted, Ashu responded.

-“There is!!”

“Then check if there’s a vine nearby that you can climb up!!”

-“Got it!!”

Ashu started to move sideways.

Like a monkey jumping between vines, she hopped, making my heart race.

“Give it your all, Ashu!”

“Keep going!”

Ara and Cheong cheered for Ashu back and forth.

Ras was ready to catch Ashu if she fell, and Mammon kept touching his crown, sweating.

“Ugh…”

Seon-ah also looked up anxiously…

Finally, Ashu exclaimed.

-“Oh! I can go up!”

“Wow!!”

With those words, the dot-like figure of Ashu disappeared. It seemed she had succeeded in going up.

“Wow!”

“Hooray! Hooray!”

Ara and Cheong hugged each other in celebration, and Ras and Mammon breathed a sigh of relief.

Now what?

We had sent Ashu, Frey, and Chirpy up there, but nothing had changed.

“Now what do we do.”

Seon-ah asked exactly what was on my mind.

I just shrugged and looked up.

“Guess we’ll have to wait for them to come down?”

“……”

The kids ended up staying up there longer than expected.

Finally, Chirpy came down alone to update us.

-Chirp!

“They’re braiding the vines to make a long rope! They’re making it so we can all go up!”

“Oh. I wondered why it was taking so long; they were doing that.”

Braiding the vines took longer than expected. Thus, about 12 more hours had passed beyond the original estimate when Chirpy came down again to give us an update.

“The vines are all braided!”

“Oh! Finally!”

Wow, how many days has it been?

Thinking back to when we set off for the Sky Island, it had been nearly ten days.

Luckily, thanks to the existence of the portal, I checked daily if there were any messages from outside. Except for one time when Meluca fruits were taken by the guild, there were no other incidents.

Sssshhhrrrrrr!

A bundle of vines was thrown from above.

The vine stretched and descended.

The length was tremendous, and it seemed to be additionally reinforced, twisted several times for thickness.

“Oh, good, good.”

Finally, I’ll get to see the Sky Island!

As soon as we get up, I’ll set up a portal!

We decided to send Ara and Ras up first.

After sending them, we planned to tie the vine around our bodies well and have it pulled from above.

-“I will pull you up.”

“Go up first!”

Excited Ara climbed up the vine first.

Ras followed powerfully behind her.

We waited for the two to ascend quickly.

I tied Cheong and Mammon securely with the vine and then tied myself.

“All set.”

Ara and Ras had gone up.

Soon, Chirpy moved back and forth, checking if everyone was ready, and then started pulling the vine slowly.

Swoosh- Swoosh-.

“Wow, it’s scary…?”

“It’s scary.”

As we ascended, the altitude increased.

The vine was very sturdy, but I couldn’t help feeling scared.

Moreover, because it was slower than climbing directly, we had to climb for a long time.

-“Overlord! Look at that!”

Unlike Cheong and me, Mammon, apparently not as scared, pointed ahead with a touched expression.

Looking up, a clear view of the dungeon’s landscape unfolded.

“Wow…….”

A horizon filled with the Milky Way.

An ethereal sky touched a pristine natural environment, stretching wide.

Green landscapes, earth-colored landscapes, blue landscapes.

And all of them touching a dark purple sky filled with the Milky Way.

I was moved beyond words and tears welled up unknowingly.

It was hard to believe this landscape was real.

I quickly took out my phone from my pocket to capture this scene.

However, the view did not feel as impressive as seeing it with my own eyes.

Thus, we were pulled up for several hours, watching the constantly changing dungeon landscape as we ascended to the Sky Island.

Even after we arrived on the Sky Island, we couldn’t hide our amazement.

“What, what is this?”

On the Sky Island…

There were clearly man-made buildings.

It was an unexpected discovery of civilization.

“Today’s catalog.”

A woman checks the booklet handed by her secretary.

Just by looking at the catalog, the woman, who exuded an aura of nobility, soon found something of interest.

“Oh.”

She discovered a piece she liked.

Looking closely, it was listed as located in Korea.

“Korea…”

The woman, who had a taste for art, asked her secretary for more information about the piece and the artist she had just seen and carefully examined the photos.

At the moment she resolved to verify it with her own eyes, someone entered the room without a word.

“Who is it?!”

The woman’s secretary, appearing guarded, tried to block the man entering.

However, the woman, who was sitting behind and not paying attention, flipping through a booklet, said,

“Don’t stop him. He’s not someone who can be stopped just like that.”

“Katrina…?”

“It’s fine. Besides, I have something personal to discuss with this person. Could you please leave us alone for a moment?”

“Ah, understood.”

As soon as the secretary left, still looking wary, the man spoke.

“I believe we had an appointment today.”

“Ah. I forgot. I found a piece that really caught my interest.”

Katrina Smith.

A Level 9 Awakener and a Grand Witch, a prominent figure representing America.

She handed the booklet to the man who had approached her.

“Take a look.”

“I’m not interested in that stuff.”

“Ah, that’s right, Kyler, didn’t you just come back from Korea?”

The identity of the man in front of her was revealed.

Wanderer Kyler, he had come in person to converse with the Grand Witch.

Though both were Level 9 Awakeners, their circumstances were ironically contrasting.

Kyler briefly looked over the booklet and said, “Why suddenly ask about Korea?”

“That piece, I’ve got my eye on it. And it turns out it’s by an artist in Korea?”

The piece that Katrina was interested in was none other than a sculpture created by Mammon, known as Ingo.

Katrina, known as a major figure in the art world, showing interest meant significant implications.

The Korean art scene could be shaken by this.

However, Kyler had little interest in such matters.

“I was originally planning to make a request to you.”

“Hm? You were planning to? Does that mean you no longer need to make the request? What were you going to ask?”

“Katrina.”

Kyler called her name softly, a hint of warning in his tone.

“Whatever I do, don’t act rashly.”

“I don’t understand what you’re saying.”

“I know that you’re monitoring my movements at the government’s behest. We used to scratch each other’s backs, but it’s not good to start like this.”

“Hmmm.”

Katrina feigned ignorance with a strange nasal sound, but Kyler, believing she understood enough, turned away.

“How was Lee Kyu-seong?”

Kyler’s steps halted.

But Katrina hadn’t finished speaking.

“I was planning to go to Korea to check this piece anyway, and I might as well see Lee Kyu-seong. I wonder what could move a wanderer like you.”

“If you touch him, I will kill you.”

“Oh my, is that so?”

Kyler turned back to look at Katrina with an expressionless face. Sensing the intense energy hidden within, Katrina smirked and waved her hand.

“It won’t do us any good to fight each other.”

“If you don’t like that, then don’t provoke me.”

“But I’m really going to Korea because of this piece. And you should at least allow me to meet him casually, shouldn’t you?”

“If anything happens to Lee Kyu-seong, you’ll definitely die. Be prepared.”

“Wow, the famous wanderer coming out like this? It makes me even more curious.”

Katrina smirked cheekily and waved her hand.

Then, Kyler vanished in an instant.

She had used her ability, ‘magic’.

“I need to arrange my schedule immediately.”

The Level 9 Awakener and Grand Witch.

She had decided to visit Korea.

Master 16

Prev I TOC I Next

As Meredia followed Whitney into the carriage, she was shocked to see the prince’s fiancée tied up with ropes, having been kidnapped.

Even after the situation had somewhat settled, a heavy atmosphere still lingered at the scene.

“I believe that’s enough investigation for today. You may leave now.”

“Hey, do we have any leads on Lady Hestia’s whereabouts?”

“…I cannot disclose the details, but for now, I can only say that the situation looks grim.”

To be more precise, the knights who had arrived at the scene found themselves facing the sky-high anxiety and complaints of the guests who had been held captive for a long time.

“I see. Thank you for your hard work.”

“I appreciate the words.”

However, Mayer Embergreen, who had been excluded from the investigation for nearly the same reasons as Meredia, simply smiled at the investigator in encouragement and turned away earlier than the others, leaving the engagement hall.

“…Damn it.”

Yet, as he turned his back on the ballroom and walked toward the carriage he had arrived in, his face twisted with anxiety and irritation—completely different from the gentle expression he had shown to the investigator.

‘How did things end up like this?’

It was understandable that he would be frustrated, considering he himself was one of the masterminds behind the disaster that was supposed to unfold at today’s engagement ceremony.

‘Everything should have gone perfectly.’

He was the one who had subtly persuaded the prince’s white mages not to attend the ceremony, using his close friendship with the prince as leverage.

He was also the one who had personally arranged for the maids and attendants, secretly inserting dark mages among them.

‘If things continue like this, my standing in the Union will decline…’

Though he himself was not a dark mage, Mayer had long been associated with the ‘Shadow Union’, a secret organization of dark mages spread across the world.

This was the perfect opportunity to solidify his position within the Union, which was why he had taken the risk.

But now, with the plan falling apart so spectacularly, there was even a chance that he would be held accountable for the failure.

‘Could this be the work of that crazy woman, Meredia?’

Grinding his teeth in frustration, Mayer’s thoughts drifted back to the moment a few hours ago when his sister had directed a murderous glare at him.

He loathed Meredia so much that he even avoided looking at her, yet he had never underestimated her skills.

If she hadn’t possessed dazzling talents, including her ‘Jewel Eyes’, the ducal succession issue would have been settled long ago.

‘Now that I think about it, she brought along some suspicious-looking noble from a count’s family as her partner, didn’t she?’

As Mayer followed this train of thought, another person who had irritated him just as much as Meredia came to mind.

The one who had dared to speak about his most painful weakness in front of him.

The one who had openly sided with Meredia.

And the one who, despite his incompetence in remembering even the names of his own subordinates, had the implicit protection of that fool of a prince.

“What was that guy’s name again…?”

Although not as significant as Meredia, he was still an unpredictable variable in Mayer’s plans, so he tried to recall his name.

“Whitney Lingard.”

Suddenly, a low voice spoke beside him.

“Yes, that was the name…! What the—?!”

Startled, Mayer instinctively responded in agreement, only to snap his head around in shock.

“Do you know where that young man has gone?”

A figure, cloaked to the point where their face was barely visible, ignored Mayer’s reaction and posed another question.

“W-Who the hell are you?”

“Judging by your attire, you must be with the security forces. Then, shouldn’t you be over there getting questioned by the knights? Why…”

Mayer, momentarily thrown off by the stranger’s indifferent demeanor, scowled when he caught sight of the mask they were wearing.

“Just tell me whether you know or not.”

“……!”

The figure, still staring at him impassively, slightly lifted their mask.

And in that instant, Mayer froze in place.

‘…T-The Emperor?’

He had just realized that the most revered person in the empire, who had not appeared in public for years due to health reasons, was standing right beside him.

‘Why… Why is someone who should be bedridden here…?’

“Tch.”

The very reason why Mayer and the ‘Shadow Union’ had dared to execute such a bold plan in the heart of the imperial capital was precisely because of the emperor’s absence.

Now, he was so overwhelmed that he even forgot to bow in greeting, merely staring in stunned disbelief.

“I would prefer not to repeat myself.”

Whether it was out of mercy or sheer indifference, the emperor merely muttered this in a disinterested tone.

“Hmm?”

Then, all of a sudden, the emperor’s gaze shifted toward a carriage speeding past the checkpoint with little inspection.

“Well, I suppose there was no need to ask you after all.”

Observing the insignia of the Meredia family engraved on the back of the carriage, the emperor blandly murmured before pulling the mask back over their face.

“It would be wise for you to keep quiet about seeing me here today.”

Then, just as the emperor was about to pass by, they suddenly tilted their head slightly and addressed Mayer once more.

“…I shall obey.”

Thankfully regaining his senses just in time, Mayer immediately fell to his knees and bowed deeply in response.

“Oh, but you may tell that toy of yours.”

The emperor’s offhand remark sent a chill down Mayer’s spine.

“The only other person who knows I was here today is the prince.”

“Ah…”

“Well, now you know too.”

With that, the emperor strode away without looking back.

“Haa… Haa…”

Only after quite some time had passed did Mayer finally lift his head, exhaling shakily.

‘Was that truly the presence of someone who wasn’t even exuding killing intent…?’

If not for his status as the duke’s heir…

Or rather, if the emperor had simply deemed it necessary…

He might have already disappeared from the world without a trace.

“…Whitney Lingard. I don’t know who that bastard really is, but…”

The fact that the emperor, the only person in the empire who could make such a thing possible, had personally given the prince a warning about Whitney only made Mayer’s evaluation of him rise significantly.

‘It seems I’ll have to start treating him as an equal to Meredia from now on.’

Of course, if Whitney had known about this while he was sighing deeply in the carriage, enduring Meredia’s sharp interrogation and the groans of the saintess he had no choice but to kidnap, he would have looked utterly aggrieved.

‘…At least I have an excuse ready for the next Shadow Assembly, so that’s a relief.’

The wheels of fate were already spinning rapidly, completely beyond his control.

***

The tumultuous day of the engagement ceremony passed, and finally, morning arrived.

“Sigh.”

But instead of feeling the weight of having survived the prologue, I spent the night wide awake in my room with Runiel.

‘I managed to bring her here, but now what?’

After all, the prince’s fiancée and future saintess, Lady Hestia of the Viscount family—who had likely thrown the empire into chaos with her disappearance—was now lying asleep in my bed instead of me.

‘She struggled so much yesterday, but now she’s sleeping so peacefully…’

Originally, I had planned to explain my reasons for doing all this once I had secured her, but the situation had been too urgent to allow for that.

The moment we got into the carriage, Meredia had relentlessly interrogated me, and from then on, I had to devote all my energy to stopping her, who insisted on staying the night at my house.

“The acupressure point I used was precise. She’s simply in a deep sleep, so there’s no need to worry.”

“Haha…”

Leaving behind Meredia, who clearly had a million questions, I secretly entered my mansion.

To prevent further complications, I had asked Runiel to put Hestia to sleep for a while, then sneaked over the mansion wall like a thief.

Unfortunately, I ran into Sasha, who was returning from a memorial visit, but aside from her, only Runiel, Meredia, and I knew that the missing saintess was in this house.

‘I’ve cleared the first hurdle. Now I just need to set up a meeting with Meredia and explain everything…’

“…”

‘I wonder if Lady Hestia will understand any of this.’

I had already been incredibly rude to her, so even if she refused to trust me, I couldn’t blame her.

But it wasn’t as if I had wanted to resort to such an unsophisticated method to take her away.

‘Right now, she’s basically a walking time bomb, so I had no choice.’

If my memory was correct, Lady Hestia was currently under a curse that made it nearly impossible for her to resist on her own.

Originally, she was supposed to meet a playable character in the prologue, awaken her saintess powers, and free herself from the curse.

However, since the talent selection event had been canceled for some unknown reason, she remained in danger even after surviving the engagement ceremony.

Fortunately, as a white mage, I could at least neutralize her curse for now.

If I hadn’t intervened, another crisis as dangerous as the prologue would have occurred within just a few days.

‘In the end, I have to make sure Lady Hestia meets a playable character.’

The problem was that my curse-neutralization was only a temporary measure until the fundamental issue was resolved.

Handing her over to the imperial family would expose her to the emperor’s grasp.

Turning her over to the strictly dogmatic Holy Order would mean forcing her into excruciating trials without even meeting the playable character.

That left me with only one option: keeping her safe until the talent selection event reopened.

Of course, even without the dark mages, there were plenty of people after her, so it wouldn’t be easy.

But for the sake of world peace—and, more importantly, my comfortable future—I had to see this through.

Once Lady Hestia awakened as a saintess, the playable characters and she could handle world peace on their own without me lifting a finger.

‘Once she wakes up, I need to explain everything as kindly as possible. And then…’

-Bang! Bang! Bang!

“Whoa!”

Just as I was organizing my thoughts and waiting for the future saintess to wake up, a thunderous pounding echoed from the door.

“B-Brother! Are you in there? Answer me!”

“…Cecil?”

For a moment, I panicked, wondering if I had been tracked down by dark mages or the imperial knights.

Luckily, the voice outside the door belonged to my younger sister.

“When did you get back? No, that’s not important right now—just open the door!”

Feeling a brief sense of relief, I let out a sigh.

Then, as the knocking grew louder—enough to shake the door—I glanced at Runiel, who had been halfway drawing her sword, and signaled her with my eyes.

“I will follow your orders. Though, given your sister’s skills, she certainly does warrant a real blade…”

“No, I meant hide Hestia. Preferably with you.”

After a small misunderstanding, Runiel lifted Hestia onto her back and disappeared into my wardrobe.

Only then did I adjust my expression and open the door to greet my sister.

“Haa… Haa… Why did you take so long to open the door?”

“Haha… I just wanted to make sure I welcomed my dear Cecil in perfect form…”

Come to think of it, she had been avoiding me lately, so I was genuinely touched that she was talking to me again.

Since we were here, maybe I could take this opportunity to bond over academy stories or friends—strengthen our sibling relationship a little…

“Forget that! What the hell is this?!”

Just as I was having that thought, she suddenly raised her voice and shoved something toward me.

Feeling slightly deflated, I took the newspaper she handed me.

“I’m getting messages from everywhere—people are freaking out!”

“Huh?”

The next moment, my mind went completely blank as I stared at the headlines.

Yuman’s sudden arrival startled everyone.

However, the kings attending the conference showed no emotion at Yuman’s appearance, and Alon immediately realized that Yuman’s arrival had been expected.

‘It’s not so strange when you think about it. This incident involved the entire coalition kingdom, including the Holy Kingdom.’

As Alon was watching Yuman, King Stalian V broke the silence.

“What are you talking about?” he asked, clearly confused by Yuman’s remarks.

Yuman moved closer to Alon naturally and said, “Take it literally. Do not ask why he roams to capture the Outer gods.”

“Why can’t we ask?” asked Stalian V, his expression uncomfortable.

Alon was also puzzled, but Yuman calmly replied, “I cannot tell you the reason.”

“What?” said Stalian V.

“The only certain thing is that he is contributing to the peace of the world right now,” Yuman assured.

The kings, who had been silent until then, were all visibly impressed.

Generally, the Holy Kingdom maintained neutrality, so openly taking sides was quite unusual.

“So, are we to just take the saint’s word and stop questioning the Marquis?” Stalian V frowned.

Once Yuman spoke up, it might have been wise to stop challenging him further.

Although the saint’s status was not above a king, antagonizing the Holy Kingdom could create a tiresome situation.

Yet, aware of this, Stalian openly expressed his dissatisfaction.

He had a reason to show his feelings, as Yuman offered no reasonable explanation that could help understand the situation.

Then Yuman stared at Stalian V for a moment before curling his lips, “So, does the king of Ashtalon not trust our Holy Kingdom’s intentions?”

“Wait, no, I didn’t say that—” stammered Stalian V.

“It sounds like that to me,” Yuman interjected.

Stalian V was flustered; he had expressed his discontent with the saint but now it seemed as though he had criticized the entire Holy Kingdom.

“Wait, that’s too much of a leap,” Stalian V hurriedly defended.

But Yuman, both a saint and a spokesman for the Holy Kingdom, retorted, “An exaggeration? Complaining about what I said goes against the intent of the Holy Kingdom that sent me.”

Yuman then removed the shallow smile he had been wearing and spoke coldly, leaving Stalian speechless.

Yuman’s words might as well have been, ‘Can’t you trust us? Are you a heretic?’

Stalian V quickly backpedaled, “I didn’t mean that.”

As a nation, particularly one belonging to the coalition, offending the Holy Kingdom was a different level of problem, especially since the damage from the recent incident was significantly worse in Ashtalon, and they desperately needed support from the clergy and the Holy Kingdom.

“I’m sorry, I should apologize,” Stalian V conceded, but Yuman simply shook his head, “No, you should apologize to Brother Alon.”

“What? Me? No, I’m fine,” Alon quietly denied, not fully grasping the unfolding events.

Whether Yuman knew Alon’s inner thoughts or not, he remained calm, “Brother Alon was just contributing to the world, and yet he faced suspicion.”

“It’s not so much suspicion, just some unclear points,” said Stalian V, but he soon closed his mouth.

Though the saint said nothing more, the expression on his face clearly conveyed his message, and Stalian V realized he was indeed facing a silent condemnation.

“Marquis, I’m sorry.”

Once again, he bowed his head.

“……It’s okay.”

Alon awkwardly, yet to others seemingly calmly, accepted Stalian V’s apology.

Then, “Brother.”

He felt a strange emotion while watching Yuman nod subtly with an expression that seemed to say, ‘Just trust me.’

‘…I’m thankful, but isn’t it a bit too much?’ Alon thought as the idea briefly crossed his mind and left.

***

Evening was approaching outside the window.

The meeting finally ended late in the evening.

“Are you feeling alright?”

“I’m fine.”

“How impressive. When did you form a connection with the saint?”

“……Well.”

Asked with curiosity by Cretinia Siyan, Alon fell silent unintentionally.

Not because he didn’t want to answer, but because he himself didn’t know when exactly he had formed such a connection with Yuman.

“If you really don’t want to speak of it, I won’t ask. Besides, after today, there will be no more need to summon you, so you should go back and rest. You don’t seem to be in good condition.”

“Thank you for your concern.”

“No problem—see you next time.”

Cretinia Siyan said her goodbyes lightly and left.

Watching her retreating figure, Alon was then approached by Seolrang.

“Master! What happened?”

“It was nothing big.”

“Really? That’s good!”

With a bright smile, Seolrang came over, and Alon petted her head.

“So, are you going back now?”

“Probably. I need to rest.”

“Oh…”

Seolrang made a visibly disappointed face.

“Master! Wanna go to the colony with me!?”

“……Next time. I’ll have to stop by eventually.”

“Ugh, that’s disappointing, but can’t help it.”

Despite her disappointment, Seolrang nodded understandingly.

Watching her, Alon unwittingly smiled like a father and petted her head even more diligently.

“Brother.”

“……Saint.”

Suddenly, Yuman approached and started a conversation.

“Are you feeling alright?”

“Not really well, but I think I’ll recover enough with some rest.”

“That’s good to hear.”

“But, are you really okay?”

“What do you mean?” Yuman asked crisply.

Alon hesitated for a moment then said, “You defended me.”

“Ah—don’t worry about it. I just did what I had to do.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes.”

Alon felt a slight sense of unease at Yuman’s firm response.

He appreciated the help, but he suspected it was based on some misunderstanding.

‘I’m not sure what misunderstanding he’s under…’

As Alon made a slightly strange expression, Yuman caught on and continued, “Have you been talking frequently with Archbishop Yutia?”

“We’ve been exchanging letters.”

“Hmm.”

Worry crept into Yuman’s expression.

“Brother, I keep telling you, it’s not good to be close to Archbishop Yutia.”

“……Is that so?”

“Yes. Trust me.”

Yuman firmly pursed his lips.

Alon’s expression grew more complex.

Thinking back, Yuman had always warned him to be cautious of Yutia.

Therefore, “I just want to clarify, in case there’s been some misunderstanding.”

“No.”

Instead of addressing the potential misunderstanding, Yuman’s expression became like that of someone who had laid out their child by the riverside.

“Remember my words, Brother, Yutia is a person you need to be very careful around. She’s someone who hides things. Remember my words.”

Yuman, seeming genuinely concerned, reiterated his warning several times.

Instinctively realizing that any response would only make the conversation go in circles, Alon said, “……Yes, well………….. I will do as you say.”

“That’s good.”

He nodded reluctantly, and then Yuman, with a calm smile, turned and left.

“……He might be smarter than I thought.”

“Huh?”

Surprised by Seolrang’s sudden remark, Alon slightly tilted his head.

The next day, after hearing all sorts of incomprehensible talk, Alon left Tern and headed to the his estate.

At that moment, in the Harlem district of Laksas.

After being dragged away once by Radan, Alexion, an Appraiser who had since been trying to live life more interestingly instead of wasting each day, faced an unexpected disaster.

The disaster was none other than, “Ra, Radan… sir?”

“Hey, have you been well?”

The very person who had turned his life upside down, the Pirate King of Laksas, was grinning brightly.

“Yes, yes, I’ve been well……. But, what brings you here…………?”

Alexion naturally bowed his waist and asked while shaking his head submissively.

Although his back was normally unbowed to anyone, having seen what happened to those who stood against Radan before, this attitude came naturally.

Radan, seeming to like his demeanor, nodded and asked,

“So, are you still up to illegal stuff?”

“What!? No, how could I! I’ve been out of that business for a while now-!”

Alexion protested as if it were a great injustice.

Indeed, he had been out of the illegal business since staying in Harlem, obviously due to Radan’s words, “Stop doing illegal stuff and live right,”

Radan had casually mentioned this while tapping his head a few times, but for Alexion, the situation had become a trauma and he really acted as Radan had instructed.

Recently, he had started a legitimate business.

Alexion, whose mind was sharp when it came to making money, even without illegal activities, had innate business talent and was even making a good deal of money.

“Is that so?”

“Yes, yes- I’m really only doing legitimate business now.”

To prove his sincerity, Alexion showed his sparkling eyes and nodded several times.

“Then, go to my brother’s domain.”

“What……?”

An unbelievable command, no, an order, was dropped.

“Didn’t you hear?”

“I did, but…… if by brother you mean- the Marquis Palatio’s domain?”

Alexion, questioning whether he had heard wrong.

“Yes, you heard right.”

“Why should I go there?”

“You’re good at business, aren’t you?”

“Yes…… well, yes.”

“Go there and do some business, what’s it called,”

Radan paused to scratch his head, then added, “Make some specialties, gather some influx for the domain, you know, stuff like that.”

“……Me?”

“Yes, you.”

“… Why me?”

He looked even more puzzled.

“Don’t like it?”

Following Radan’s question, “……No.”

“If you don’t like it, just say so.”

“I-”

“Just talk, that’s all.”

“I will go.”

Alexion had no choice but to obey.

“That’s right, good decision.”

Radan casually patted his shoulder and left with ease.

After a brief moment, Alexion, checking his surroundings, exclaimed, “They make my life unbearable!!!”

Bang!

He slammed the desk and shouted, “What?”

Immediately after, Radan opened the door and came back in.

“Gasp-”

“Did you call me?”

Radan’s question.

“No. No.”

Alexion, repeatedly shaking his head with both hands held forward, “Okay, then. Do well?”

“Yes, yes……………”

Radan shrugged his shoulders, turned around, and left,

Alexion tightly closed his eyes and then checked his surroundings again.

‘Sigh…’

He quietly sighed to himself.
