Lesson 2

“I’m glad too.”

After receiving the business card, Ho-cheol checked both sides of it and frowned.

[Villain Reformation Psychological Counseling Center Counselor Han So-hee]

“There’s nothing correct here except the name.”

So-hee shrugged nonchalantly and replied,

“It’s an external title used within the academy. I actually have a counseling license too. Anyway.”

She tilted her head this way and that, scrutinizing Ho-cheol’s face. Nearly a decade in prison, they said he was practically a hermit, but in person, he didn’t seem so. His gauntness rather stirred a strange emotion.

“I was a bit scared hearing you were a brutal criminal sentenced to 200 years. You look pretty normal, huh?”

His appearance was quite different from the prisoner documents she had checked a few days ago. In the pictures, he looked terribly frightening.

“Maybe you’re just not photogenic?”

Ho-cheol lost his words momentarily, then narrowed his brows and clicked his tongue.

“This……………..”

To Ho-cheol, the image of an association-affiliated agent was exceedingly simple. They were always cold, businesslike, and cynical.

Especially those agents who worked in the field tended to have a stronger disposition.

However, the woman before him did not fit into any of those categories.

He had been inwardly hopeful about how capable an agent assigned to monitor him alone would be. Real S-class agents would be busy with monster hunting or villain suppression, but he expected at least a borderline S-class level.

With his arms crossed, he expressed his honest feelings.

“A real loser has been assigned to monitor me. It’s quite unsettling.”

“I hear that often. In fact, I heard it from the director this morning too. But it’s still hurtful, you know?”

“Uh, sorry. It’s been years since I’ve talked to someone. Not used to it.”

Ho-cheol waved his hand and apologized straightforwardly.

That was a bit of an overstatement. If things go well, they might have to see each other for a long time, so picking fights or getting angry would do no good.

Ho-cheol pocketed the business card and got into the car.

The car moved forward as if it had been waiting.

He gazed absently at So-hee’s profile.

“Anyway, why would you take on such a job? It’s not popular.”

Just from their brief conversation, he had grasped her personality. She didn’t seem the type to feel a calling for this kind of job, nor was she hungry for promotion.

“A demotion. Or did you get forced into this?”

“It’s all because I’m competent. It’s not entirely without issues though.”

“If they really assigned you this job based on your abilities.”

Ho-cheol muttered softly, stroking his chin.

“Sensory type. No, is it related to psychological traits?”

It wasn’t a big secret, so So-hee nodded.

“Right. I can spot a lie better than any device in the world, so don’t even dream of lying to me.”

“Lie detector?”

“Young people these days really shorten everything when they talk.”

“But even with today’s technology, aren’t all lie detectors pretty much the same? If I wanted to, I could manipulate my heartbeat or pulse, and it would never be detectable through vocal cues.”

Ho-cheol himself had no such intentions, but for an A-class, controlling one’s heartbeat, pulse, or vocal cues was a simple task.

Modern lie detectors were like toys for children.

So-hee raised her index finger from the hand holding the steering wheel and wiggled it side to side as she proudly explained.

“That’s ordinary lie detectors for you. I don’t just rely on external factors like that to distinguish truth from lies, I look at the most fundamental part of a human, the color of their conscience.”

Ho-cheol’s eyebrows narrowed then relaxed again.

“Color?”

“There’s this saying, right? Someone’s insides are black, or they are as white as snow. There’s also the phrase ‘a white lie.’ To me, that’s not just a metaphorical expression; I can actually see it.”

“That’s fascinating.”

After all, the world was full of unusual traits, so having the ability to differentiate a person’s conscience by color wasn’t strange.

The signal changed, and the car stopped.

“And here.”

So-hee pulled out a stack of documents from her bag and handed one over.

“Here’s a copy of the contract you signed last time. You should have it.”

“Yeah, it’s best to make sure everything is clear so we both can be at ease. So, how exactly will the monitoring be done?”

“It’s all in the documents, but to explain, I will be monitoring you. However, I won’t be with you 24/7. I’ll check on you once before you leave for work in the morning, once when you come home, and then we’ll rotate calls every six hours.”

Ho-cheol narrowed his eyes as he flipped through the documents.

“Doesn’t that seem a bit lax for strict management?”

“My ability can be triggered over the phone as well. If you decide to run away, it’s not like I can physically stop you. It’s easier to respond from a safe place over a call.”

Of course, that wasn’t the only reason. So-hee’s ability was among the top in the psychological category, but it had a limit on how many times it could be used per day.

A maximum of five times a day. Any more contact with Ho-cheol would be pointless.

“Besides, there’s that.”

So-hee’s gaze shifted to Ho-cheol’s wrist, and he nodded as if he understood.

“Yeah, that’s true.”

Ho-cheol’s management and control.

Among these, So-hee’s role leaned more towards management. What controlled him was the wristwatch he was currently wearing.

It looked like a watch, but its purpose and functionality were closer to handcuffs or shackles.

It tracked his location 24/7, recorded audio, and at regular intervals, a needle from inside the watch would inject a drug that suppressed his abilities.

Being injected with a near-lethal dose of the drug daily was not a pleasant feeling for Ho-cheol.

He twirled his wrist around, grumbling.

“Even so, this is too much. To wear it even while sleeping or showering? That’s over the top.”

What if he developed a rash?

“Isn’t it better than having a dozen agents following you around?”

“That’s true, but at least it’s a relief that the design is pretty. If it were one of those electronic ankle monitors, I definitely wouldn’t wear it.”

Ho-cheol re-checked the contents of the documents.

There was nothing significantly different or notable from the last time.

After checking the last page, he casually threw the documents onto the back seat.

He rested his elbow on the window ledge and propped his chin.

“Are we heading straight to the academy?”

“Yes.”

A brief silence followed,

“Oh!”

Ho-cheol, who had been staring blankly out the window, suddenly jolted.

Startled, So-hee gripped the steering wheel tightly and asked urgently,

“What, what is it!”

He slowly turned his head towards So-hee and asked,

“Tofu?”

“Ah.”

It seemed her tension finally eased as she slumped back against the seat, feeling foolish for having been so tense.

The headquarters agents probably listening in through his wristwatch must be feeling similar.

With her heart still trembling, she barely managed to reply,

“……Isn’t that expecting too much from a civil servant?”

“Asking for tofu isn’t too much to ask. Well, yeah. In the old days, they used to take care of such things. Not so much these days.”

Ho-cheol mumbled awkwardly as he turned his gaze back to the window.

However, his murmuring carried a tone of disappointment.

So-hee pointed to a black envelope visible in the rearview mirror.

“Open that.”

It was good that she had brought it, just in case.

***

After quickly devouring the tofu So-hee brought, Ho-cheol started nodding off and soon fell completely asleep.

“What the….”

Seeing him like this, So-hee was dumbfounded.

Given her profession, she had seen her fair share of villains, though not a staggering amount.

And a villain like Ho-cheol was unprecedented.

Could he really be the ferocious villain whose real name was classified as top secret?

If his demeanor was all an act, he had enough talent to make it big as an actor, not a villain.

Despite appearing relaxed and confident on the outside, this was her first time handling such a high-risk mission.

She felt foolish for having written a will just in case.

She sneaked a glance at Ho-cheol and then sighed, looking back to the road ahead.

The weather was annoyingly clear.

Some time had passed.

“We’ve arrived.”

So-hee’s statement woke Ho-cheol, who rubbed his face with both hands and yawned.

“We arrived quickly.”

“It’s been three hours.”

“Really? I didn’t wake up once, so you must have driven well.”

With his half-hearted compliment, he looked out the window.

The first thing he saw was a massive gate.

Beyond it, the sprawling grounds of the academy were vast beyond mere words.

Under the brilliant sunlight, the buildings of the academy sparkled.

Each one, towering over ten stories high, showed a bit of wear but boasted a grandeur beyond their age.

Clarington Hero Academy.

Among the numerous hero academies worldwide, it was renowned as one of the most prestigious.

The fact that 70% of S-class heroes were alumni spoke volumes about its reputation.

The car continued a good distance inside the main gate.

The academy grounds had mountains and lakes, and even a city designed for practical training, not to mention its own set of laws applicable only within the academy.

It was practically a small nation in itself.

“So, having come all the way to the academy, you’re not going to tell me to start classes today, are you?”

“Of course not. School isn’t even in session yet. We have an appointment with the dean first.”

“A question I probably know the answer to, but the dean’s a hero, right?”

So-hee nodded.

“The deans of Clarington have always been S-class heroes. The current dean retired as an S-class hero 20 years ago, and I believe his hero name was…………”

“If he was active back in those days, I probably wouldn’t recognize the name anyway.”

The car stopped in front of a central, stark white building.

The cone-shaped tower, devoid of windows, soared upwards, reminiscent of ivory.

It might have been about thirty stories tall.

From a distance, it looked merely like a cone, but up close, it spiraled elegantly with smooth curves.

Entering the building, a staff member seemed to have been waiting and approached them.

After exchanging a few words with So-hee, the staff member led the way.

They followed the staff member into an elevator and arrived directly at the top floor.

As the doors opened, a corridor laid with red carpet unfolded before them, ending at a door made of fine wood, which exuded its presence.

Unlike Ho-cheol and So-hee, who stepped out, the staff member remained in the elevator but pointed towards the end of the corridor.

“Just go straight ahead to the dean’s office. I’ll leave you here.”

As the elevator and the staff member disappeared, Ho-cheol looked at the door of the dean’s office and muttered a brief observation.

“Doesn’t the taste seem too old-fashioned?”

Considering the dean had retired 20 years ago, his age was easily imaginable.

The average retirement age for an S-class was around 50, so he would be around 70 now.

It was indeed the age to have things planned well in advance.

So-hee asked with a noticeably uneasy expression,

“You won’t talk like that in front of the dean, will you?”

“Of course not.”

They walked down the plush corridor and stopped in front of the door.

Just as So-hee was about to knock, a voice came from beyond it.

“Come in.”

The voice was deep and authoritative.

Hearing it, Ho-cheol moved his eyes back and forth, finding it oddly familiar.

So-hee reached for the doorknob.

As the door slowly opened,

Creeeeak—

Meanwhile, Ho-cheol continued to rack his brain, trying to place the voice.

Just as the door was half open, he frowned deeply.

He finally remembered.

And immediately regretted recalling it.

The owner of the voice and he were anything but on good terms.

In fact, to put it bluntly, their relationship was quite bad.

Of all the S-class heroes, it had to be this old man who was the dean.

He murmured in despair,

“This is bad.”

And at that moment.

Boom—!

The door exploded.

Round 219

“This is a carrot field! From here, such huge golden carrots have grown!”

“Ooooh!”

Ara’s words were translated by Junichi, and the Japanese chefs, hearing the translation, eagerly jotted something down.

Their behavior made them seem less like visitors and more like students here to learn.

“From here on, this is the potato and sweet potato field. We thin out the sprouts here.”

“Ooooh.”

“Sometimes, we even boil these sprouts and eat them. It’s actually a pretty nice delicacy.”

“Ooooh.”

Every time Ara said something, people nodded with admiration, which made her explanations grow more confident.

Seeing her like that was so adorable that Ryu Cheon had to resist the urge to hug her right then and there, covering her face with her hands.

“She’s just too cute…”

The field was vast, and the number of slimes managing the field was also immense.

As Junichi realized this was a slime dungeon, he discovered something new and felt his curiosity about slimes surge.

What if slimes could be used in farming on Earth?

Of course, it was an extremely difficult idea.

First of all, bringing slimes out of a dungeon wasn’t easy.

Monsters only came out in two scenarios: a dungeon break or being tamed as a familiar, and both were rare occurrences.

A slime dungeon break?

There were barely any dungeons where only slimes resided, and even if there were, a break was unlikely to happen.

As for taming them, that was even harder.

To tame a familiar, the monster had to have a certain level of intelligence, and only an Awakened with taming abilities could do it.

For some reason, the slimes here were all quite sharp, but ordinary slimes had extremely low intelligence.

Their intelligence was akin to insects or reptiles that couldn’t recognize their owner, which made taming nearly impossible.

‘Even if you could tame one, how would you give it commands?’

Even if you somehow managed to tame one, it wouldn’t be of much help.

In the end, only Kyu-seong could handle all of this.

Knowing that, Kyu-seong seemed to reveal these details without worry.

In reality, he had simply invited them without much thought, just because he liked them.

“We are currently harvesting paprika. Would you like to give it a try?”

“Hahaha! Sounds good!”

“You can eat the paprika we harvest right away! I give you permission!”

“Ooooh! That really gets me excited!”

While everyone was enjoying the farm experience, Kyu-seong finally finished preparing for the dinner party planned for the next day.

“Good work, everyone!”

“Alright, everyone, great job! Hahaha!”

“Now, all we have left to do tomorrow is have a blast. But since you all came a day early, you deserve a reward, right?”

“Reward!”

Even the usually unreadable sub-team leader, I Hae-sol, looked expectant alongside Kang Hanul.

For them, Kyu-seong briefly stopped by the storage.

Soon, he returned with dried crop snacks, dried fish, and a homemade sauce.

He didn’t forget the most important thing—alcohol.

“I don’t drink, but I thought I’d bring some just in case anyone enjoys it. What do you think?”

“No way! Kyu-seong, you had this much stocked up?”

“I don’t drink, so I’ve just been collecting it whenever the brewery sent some.”

“Well done, Kyu-seong!”

“Did I… do well?”

Soon, they gathered in a circle and started enjoying the drinks. There was plenty of alcohol, but knowing they had the next day ahead, they decided to savor it lightly.

“Ahhh.”

“Wow, this is amazing, isn’t it?”

“Your tongue’s already getting loose.”

“I’ve never had such delicious alcohol before.”

“Same, I don’t usually like alcohol, but this taste and aroma… I could keep drinking it.”

Kyu-seong’s father, Lee Hyun-woo, also subtly checked his wife’s reaction before joining in. Soon, he was mingling with everyone, chatting comfortably.

“Hey, father. I have to say, meeting Kyu-seong was one of the best things in my life. I mean, I’m really grateful you raised such a good son.”

“Our Kyu-seong is quite something, isn’t he? Whose son do you think he is?! Of course, it’s only natural.”

Watching Kang Hanul and Lee Hyun-woo bond and chat, Kyu-seong smiled wryly.

Meanwhile, the others who had finished the farm tour returned, only to discover the gathering.

“Hey! How could you leave us out!”

Junichi jumped right in, and before long, he too was naturally mingling with Kang Hanul and Lee Hyun-woo.

“Hahaha!”

“Hahaha!”

“Hohoho!”

Seeing this, Kyu-seong thought that alcohol actually played a good role and quietly stood up to head somewhere.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m going to prepare something and bring it back.”

Kyu-seong smiled at Hae-sol’s question as if telling him to look forward to it.

However, Hae-sol, feeling awkward just sitting there, followed behind him.

“This is…”

“It’s doenjang (soybean paste). I was actually planning to show you tomorrow, but I’m going to make doenjang soup, add some chili peppers to make it spicy, and boil it with rice. Perfect for a hangover cure, right?”

“Gulp.”

Just hearing the description made Hae-sol’s mouth water, and his brain seemed to go numb.

At the same time, he once again realized the power of Kyu-seong’s cooking.

‘This is why, when something happens to Kyu-seong, everyone rushes to help.’

Of course, there were many other reasons, but if, after experiencing Kyu-seong’s food, people heard something happened to him…

If they could never eat his food again, it would surely cause chaos.

Splash.

While he was lost in thought, Kyu-seong was already making the doenjang soup.

Because there were many people, Kyu-seong filled a large pot with water, mixed in the soybean paste, and added dried fish like anchovies.

“Would you like to try some? It was part of the snacks earlier too.”

“Thank you.”

It was a fish he had never seen before, but its size was similar to the commonly known dried anchovy. When he chewed it, the taste was also similar—salty and addictive.

Kyu-seong added kelp, dried fish, onions, garlic, potatoes, and carrots.

Finally, he added a generous amount of spicy chili peppers!

Bubble, bubble.

The doenjang soup quickly started to boil.

Soon, Kyu-seong took out a large batch of rice from one of the cauldrons.

“Kyu-seong, is this the same rice we had back at the guild?”

“That’s right. Did you try it too, sub-team leader? I thought you weren’t there.”

“Thanks to you preparing enough for the entire team, everyone got to try it.”

“How was it?”

“I felt like I could die without any regrets.”

Hae-sol said this sincerely.

Normally, he wasn’t a big eater, but Kyu-seong’s food was on a different level.

For him, Kyu-seong’s rice was almost like a form of faith.

“I was thinking of adding the rice to the soup and letting it simmer into a porridge, but some people might not like that, right?”

“Anything is fine for me.”

They decided to leave the pot separate and let people help themselves.

“Whoa?”

“Oh no, Kyu-seong! Let us handle that.”

When Kyu-seong and Hae-sol appeared carrying the pot, everyone jumped up in surprise, rushing to help. After a bit of chaos, they finally managed to set the pot down.

After telling them to wait for a moment, Kyu-seong also brought the rice.

Thud.

“Here it is, doenjang soup for your hangovers. I actually wanted to make a stew, but since I don’t have any gochujang (red pepper paste) yet, I made it into soup.”

“Can’t you make stew with just doenjang?”

“Can you? I only know how to make it with gochujang, so I’d like to make it that way if possible.”

Just how good would the gochujang be?

The doenjang and soy sauce that Kyu-seong made had an incredible umami and flavor.

They couldn’t even be compared to store-bought products.

So, once the gochujang was complete, he would be able to make most Korean dishes.

“Alright, help yourselves.”

“Wow! The smell is amazing!”

“Did you add a lot of peppers? It smells like the perfect spicy doenjang soup I love!”

Everyone received a bowl of soup and mixed it with rice.

As they made their rice soup, they toasted with their drinks and took a bite.

“Gulp.”

As the soup passed down their throats, everyone was moved.

Oh, if only this moment could last forever.

If only it would never end.

The taste of great alcohol, paired with the spicy doenjang rice soup made for hangover relief.

Even the Chinese and Japanese guests, who weren’t Korean, were moved to tears.

“This is not human food.”

“This is not from this world. This is the food of the gods.”

“To think we’ve had the privilege of tasting the food of the gods…”

Famous figures in the culinary world, people whose names everyone would recognize, were praising it.

Of course, since they were speaking in English or Japanese, Kyu-seong couldn’t understand, but he could get the general sense of it.

“Slurp.”

“Gulp, gulp.”

Ryu Cheon, completely focused on eating the soup rather than drinking, and Ara, who was also slurping up the soup with rice next to her.

Yu Bihong, surprisingly, was hugging an empty bottle of alcohol, looking content.

-Heheh.

Nearby, Kkumuris and the slimes had also found their own spots to enjoy the festival, looking adorable.

“These cute little things.”

“Can I pet them? Good, good. Oh, they’re so cute.”

“This one’s eating well, isn’t it? You must be enjoying only the best food under such a great owner. If I could be reborn, I’d want to be a slime…”

It was a scene of paradise on Earth, where no one was left out, and everyone was happy.

Watching this, Kyu-seong enjoyed his own bowl of rice soup.

“Ah!”

Spicy and savory.

At the same time, the deep, rich flavor of the soybean paste.

The kelp and dried fish added to the umami, and all the ingredients balanced perfectly with each other.

The grains of rice, dancing in his mouth with every bite, enhanced the flavor with each chew.

“Kyu-seong, Kyu-seong.”

“Oh, Ara, you’re here?”

Before he knew it, Ara had come running over and plopped down into Kyu-seong’s arms. She looked up at him with a bashful smile.

“Hehehe.”

“Haha.”

Just looking at her made him smile. Then, suddenly, a small regret crossed his mind.

‘I really want to introduce everyone to Goblin and Gnoll.’

It was a shame.

He wanted to introduce them, but the repercussions would surely be significant.

Gnoll might not be an issue, but Goblin could potentially be linked to the Dungeon of Avarice.

‘By the way, do they even know that Gnoll is the master of the Dungeon of Wrath?’

The Gnolls had moved to this place before anyone could properly raid the dungeon.

Had the European Union even noticed?

***

“Captain! We’ve finally discovered something!”

At the urgent words of the returning team member, the captain of the fourth exploration team received the report with a stern expression.

“What did you find?”

“It’s an artificial structure. But it’s not ordinary!”

“Let’s go together.”

Soon, the entire exploration team entered a cave.

They had already invested a tremendous amount of manpower and resources to get to this point.

But they had yet to pinpoint the location of the boss.

Then came this unusual report, and the captain couldn’t help but feel tense.

As they ventured deeper into the cave, they found lava flowing alongside them.

It was clearly a cave where monsters should have been living, but the absence of any was strange.

‘Could it be…’

A place even powerful monsters avoided?

Could this be the long-sought habitat of the boss?

Finally, the captain and his team saw what the lead explorer had found.

“T-This is…”

A massive door.

It was a mysterious door, intricately adorned with massive patterns and carvings.

The door, wide open, exuded an overwhelming sense of majesty.

“C-Contact the research team immediately! This is the discovery of the century!”

“Understood!”

Thus, the European Union’s exploration continued to progress steadily.

“Is that really a rumor going around?”

“Yes. There was a meeting of the United Kingdoms not long ago, right?”

“Was there?”

“…Honestly, it seems like the Count really has no interest in what’s going on around him.”

“That’s true.”

Evan quickly responded to Alon’s nod.

“Anyway, it seems that kind of story came up there. There’s talk that Penia Crysinne and Count Palatio might end up together.”

“Was there?”

“Was Penia Crysinne present there?”

“Of course not. The event was just for the royals to build rapport and maintain the alliance of the United Kingdoms.”

“Then why did such a rumor start?”

“I don’t know. I only heard it secondhand.”

When Evan shrugged his shoulders, Alon looked genuinely puzzled. It was understandable, as there wasn’t any plausible basis for such rumors to arise between Penia and Alon. In fact, thinking back to Penia’s behavior not long ago, it was baffling that such a rumor had even started.

‘What… is this?’

Alon, still looking perplexed, soon decided to ignore the rumors. Gossip tended to get distorted as it spread, especially among the nobility, and he figured it would naturally disappear over time. Most baseless rumors that Alon had encountered so far had faded away quickly.

“It’s just a rumor that doesn’t require much attention.”

And so, Alon dismissed it lightly—at least until a few days later, right before arriving in Terea.

At the simple banquet held for the nobles attending the title-bestowal ceremony:

“Congratulations, Count!”

“For what, exactly?”

“I heard a rumor that you and Penia Crysinne are in a certain kind of relationship.”

Alon found himself internally repeating question marks. He had heard this same rumor five times now, despite having only just arrived at the venue.

“Thank you for the congratulations, but unfortunately, that’s just a false rumor.”

After dismissing the noble’s comment, Alon retreated to one corner of the banquet hall to enjoy an egg tart. Soon, Duke Altia appeared before him.

“It’s been a while, Count.”

Alon nodded at her smiling, bowing gesture, but it was only brief.

“It has been a while.”

“Is there any truth to that rumor, by any chance?”

“What rumor are you referring to?”

“The one I recently heard about you having a certain relationship with Penia Crysinne, the Master of the Blue Tower.”

It was the sixth time now. Baseless rumors might fade away quickly, but before they did, they certainly blazed brightly.

Sighing, Alon responded, “I’ve already said it multiple times, but that rumor is nonsense.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. It’s not even remotely true.”

“I thought it was real.”

“…Why?”

“Well… marrying the Master of the Blue Tower would have a very positive impact on your household and our faction, you see. For example—”

As Altia began to enumerate the advantages of marrying Penia Crysinne, Alon felt an increasing sense of weariness. Her thorough analysis of all the potential benefits and drawbacks, from major to minor, reminded him that she was indeed one of Asteria’s three major strategists.

‘…Not that anything has really changed now.’

Just as Alon was having these thoughts:

“Given all these positives, I figured you would seriously consider marriage, Count. Am I wrong? Besides, I assumed you were the one who spread the rumor.”

“…Me?”

“Rumors can be quite powerful, you know. When spread this way, even if the other party dislikes it, they might be compelled to consider it due to the collective interests of the factions involved.”

Altia’s casual comment, which turned him into a scheming manipulator, prompted Alon to respond:

“Even I wouldn’t go that far.”

“Really…?”

Seeing Altia’s genuinely surprised expression, Alon couldn’t help but wonder how he was perceived by these people. As he contemplated this, Altia, who was deep in thought, suddenly said:

“Maybe you’re a bit romantic when it comes to matters like this, Count.”

With that comment and a soft smile, she departed after exchanging a few more words. By the end of that day, Alon had received congratulations nine times.

‘It wasn’t as easy as I thought.’

###

The next day, the title-bestowal ceremony began.

In front of the gathered nobles, the 8th Monarch Cretinia, Siyan, declared that Count Palatio had been promoted to the rank of Marquess. The title-bestowal ceremony, in reality, ended very quickly. However, despite the ceremony being over, Alon was still technically a Count. The reason was simple: in order to officially use the title of Marquess, he had to receive a blessing from the Archbishop of the Holy Kingdom of Rosario.

With this in mind, Alon began preparing to head to Rosario immediately after the ceremony.

“Well then, have a safe trip.”

“Thank you for your concern, Your Majesty.”

Siyan, who was watching Alon bow his head in response to her well wishes, suddenly approached him with a thoughtful expression. Then, just as she had done before, she gently lifted the corners of his mouth with her index finger.

“Didn’t I say you look better when you smile?”

“I apologize, Your Majesty,” Alon replied, bowing his head again.

“Well, that’s enough. Once you complete the blessing, come back. Let’s have a proper talk face-to-face.”

With a faint smile, Siyan waved her hand and turned away. Alon, who had been left staring blankly at Siyan’s unexpected behavior, began preparing for his journey to the Holy Kingdom.

###

The journey from Asteria to Rosario took about two to three weeks—a relatively long trip. However, it was more comfortable than his previous trip to Raksas, as there were more villages and territories along the way where he could rest. Because of this, Alon enjoyed a relatively smoother journey compared to before.

About a week into the trip to Rosario, Alon was taking a break at an inn in the village of Nenda.

“Should I call you Marquess now, instead of Count? It’s hard to get used to,” Evan remarked.

“I’m still not a Marquess yet, so just call me Count.”

“Alright then, Count. I found one of the pieces of information you asked me to look into.”

“…Here?” Alon asked, surprised.

“Yes, there’s an information broker in this village as well. So, I stopped by.”

“So, what’s the information?” Alon inquired.

“It’s nothing major, but it seems that Abyss Stones and Abyssal Entities have been appearing more frequently in the black market recently.”

“…Does that mean they are being widely distributed?”

“No, it doesn’t seem to be in large quantities, but they’ve been showing up often,” Evan replied.

“Hmm…”

Alon thought deeply, realizing this was not good news. The spread of Abyss Stones and Abyssal Entities was never a positive sign. Abyssal Entities granted divine powers to the strong, making them even stronger, and their emergence in the underworld significantly increased the likelihood of the world descending into chaos. Moreover, the original text only mentioned that Abyssal Entities were being distributed “somewhere,” without specifying the exact distribution channels. This meant Alon couldn’t use his knowledge to stop their spread.

“Have you found the source of the distribution?” Alon asked, just in case.

Unfortunately, Evan shook his head.

“No, I couldn’t find the source, but I did learn where most of it has been going.”

“Where is it?”

“The Holy Kingdom,” Evan answered.

“…The Holy Kingdom?” Alon’s expression became puzzled.

The Holy Kingdom seemed like the least likely place to be involved with Abyssal Entities.

‘Of course, the Holy Kingdom isn’t exactly free from corruption, but I didn’t think they would go as far as dealing with Abyssal Entities,’ Alon thought, tilting his head.

‘I should probably ask Yutia about this too… Now I’ll have two requests for her. Should I get a gift for her as well?’ Alon considered. He was already planning to ask Yutia for a favor once he reached the Holy Kingdom.

‘I should try to stop somewhere along the way and get at least one gift,’ he decided.

###

A little while later.

“It’s about time for dinner. Let’s go down and eat.”

“Alright,” Evan agreed.

As they descended to the first floor of the inn to have dinner, Alon noticed that the previously empty room was now filled with boisterous noise, almost to the point of hurting his ears.

“Are those mercenaries?” Alon asked.

“It seems so,” Evan replied.

“…This inn has surprisingly good soundproofing.”

“I was surprised too,” Evan added.

Alon then moved toward an empty table in the corner of the inn. Despite the noise, he still needed to eat.

However, just as Alon was about to sit down—

“Hold up!”

“Huh?”

A mercenary suddenly occupied the seat, leaving Alon bewildered.

“What are you looking at? This is my seat!” the mercenary, who had been mingling with his comrades moments earlier, snapped at Alon.

Both Alon and Evan wore incredulous expressions.

Even for a mercenary unfamiliar with the ways of the world, it seemed absurd for someone to provoke a clearly noble-looking individual.

“Are you telling me to sit somewhere else? Huh?”

He caught a whiff of the mercenary’s overpowering stench of alcohol and quickly realized that his intoxicated state had rendered him almost mindless. He pondered how to handle the situation.

“…?”

Alon suddenly noticed that the surroundings had grown quiet and looked around. The other mercenaries were still there, but the raucous chatter had stopped. They were now staring at Alon and the drunken mercenary, their faces frozen in shock and their mouths clamped shut.

Just as Alon was wondering what had caused the shift—

“Didn’t you hear me?! Just leave—”

Before the troublesome mercenary could finish, someone appeared behind him.

Crash!

A bottle shattered on his head. With a thud, the mercenary collapsed to the ground, shivering uncontrollably.

Alon, startled by how quickly things had escalated, saw a female beastkin standing there. She was holding the broken bottle and bowing her head deeply.

“M-My apologies, Count Palatio!”

Upon seeing her, Alon quickly recognized who she was.

“…Myaon?”

“I’m truly sorry…!”

It was Myaon, the guildmaster of the Ancient Trackers Guild, one of the five major guilds in Lartania. She kept her head bowed.

###

At the Blue Moon’s regular meeting.

Typically, only the five executive members of the Blue Moon participated in these meetings, but this time, Hidan was granted an exception due to his recent discovery of information about the faction that opposed the Great Moon.

While the meeting was primarily for him to report this information, Hidan couldn’t help but feel a bit excited. Deep down, he had a sense of respect for the Great Moon and the other Moons, beings with fundamentally different strengths from his own.

With anticipation, Hidan entered the meeting room.

“I’m getting married!”

“No way!”

“I’m getting married!!”

“No way!!”

“I’m getting married!!!”

“No way!!!”

“I’ve said this before, but this is too unfair. It’s about time you let us send letters, too—”

“I think that’s fair enough!”

“Looking up at the Moon like this reminds me of those days… It’s been years, but the memory is still vivid. The way the Great Moon dealt with the Outer God was truly impressive. Oh, by the way, Hidan, have you heard about it? If not, let me explain in detail.”

Hidan could only feel dizzy amidst the chaos.

Round 218

Prev | TOC | Next

The Dungeon of Gluttony was being flooded with visitors.

Regardless of that, the mine continued operating diligently today.

-Clang! Clang! Clang!

-Clang!

The gnolls were working with much more fulfillment compared to before.

In the past, they merely dug tunnels and gathered food for their master, but now, they were extracting materials for their own homes, along with goblin-crafted furniture and decorative items.

Moreover, it made them proud to know that their efforts also helped Kyu-seong, who provided them with delicious meals.

-Clang, clang!

Even the intensity of the labor and the enjoyment couldn’t be compared.

With every dig, their hearts raced, wondering what material they would unearth, feeling as though they were discovering treasure.

-Clang!

A gnoll jumped up in joy after finding something.

Upon checking what had been caught on their pickaxe, it turned out to be a gem ore, a brilliant purple stone that Kyu-seong especially loved.

-Clang!

The gnoll proudly held up the ore, as if it had achieved something great.

All the other gnolls nearby looked on enviously.

-Clang, clang!

Soon, driven by the determination not to be outdone, the gnolls resumed working harder.

The gnoll that had unearthed the ore hurriedly grasped it and headed outside.

-Clang, clang!

As soon as it came out, the ore sparkled even brighter.

Just then, a goblin who had been sorting through materials clapped and rushed over.

-Kirik!

-Clang!

The two praised each other as they exchanged the ore.

Not long after, Mammon appeared, noticing the scene.

-Oh! You’ve mined a Starstone! And quite a large, high-quality one at that!

Mammon quickly inspected the ore, even donning spectacles made from minerals to examine it.

-The manifestation is also very high and clear. This is excellent.

Mammon, satisfied with the ore, smiled and then spoke to the gnoll who had mined the Starstone.

-As a reward, I’ll make you a piece of furniture or a decorative item of your choice!

-Clang, clang!

-Haha, something made personally by me? That’s for later. If you dig up an even more extraordinary mineral, I, the Goblin King Mammon, will make it for you myself.

As Mammon raised his nose proudly, the gnoll clenched both fists and shouted energetically.

-Clang!

-Yes, yes, keep working hard!

At that moment, someone with hands behind their back approached.

A dog in boots. It was Ras.

-If you dig up something good, he’ll make it for you personally?

-What’s this? Ras, are you interested too?

-Hmm.

Ras appeared to be deep in thought before heading toward the mine.

Without saying a word, Ras entered the mine, and Mammon followed with a grin.

-Well, since you’re the gnolls’ leader, you could just ask me, and I’d make something for you for free.

-I don’t ask for favors. I’ll pay the proper price and receive what’s due.

-Not saying no, though.

Ras grabbed a pickaxe and entered the mine.

Mammon, full of curiosity, followed, eyes shining with anticipation.

The mine was brightly lit thanks to the magic stones Kyu-seong had installed for lighting.

-Clang! Clang!

The gnolls joyfully swung their pickaxes, even humming a sort of labor song.

Of course, to human ears, it would just sound like “clang, clang!”

Ras ventured to the deepest part of the mine.

Once there, Ras touched the wall, checking something.

-Hmm, this spot should be good.

Though digging in an untouched area carried the risk of collapse, neither Ras nor Mammon was worried at all.

Ras was the gnolls’ leader, meaning Ras was the best at digging tunnels.

A digging expert like Ras wouldn’t intentionally cause a cave-in.

-Hrrmph!

Ras gripped the pickaxe, taking a stance.

The sight was so comical that it looked cute.

But as soon as Ras swung the pickaxe,

-KRAK!!!

A sound like lightning striking reverberated, and cracks spread across the wall.

With a forceful pull, Ras yanked the pickaxe out, causing the wall to collapse and crumble.

-Whoa!

Mammon quickly retreated to avoid the rushing wave of dirt and rocks.

The ground surged like a tsunami, with Ras standing firmly in the center, pickaxe embedded in the ground, parting the dirt like the Red Sea.

-Hmm! Not bad.

-What do you mean ‘not bad,’ you fool!

Mammon, having been buried in the dirt, popped out with a gasp, sputtering.

-Look. Isn’t this good enough?

-Huh?

As Ras insisted, Mammon, still confused, approached to take a closer look.

Soon, Mammon understood what Ras had been referring to.

-Wow!

Where the wall had collapsed, a huge cavern appeared.

Inside the cavern, unknown minerals filled the space, and in the center was something mysterious.

Something massive and round.

It looked almost like a slime in shape.

-This is・・・?!

***

“This… this is…?!”

The first words Ryu Cheon spoke upon seeing Ara.

She stared intensely at Ara, who was wearing a children’s swimsuit and even had snorkeling gear, with a shocked expression.

“Hahaha! It’s been a while, Kyu-seong!”

“Hello, Junichi. It’s been a while for Orie as well.”

I shook hands and exchanged greetings with familiar faces.

Yu Bihong, who had been watching Ryu Cheon with a sigh, smiled bitterly and greeted me as well.

“I’m sorry, Kyu-seong. I should have greeted you first, but seeing that….”

“It’s fine. Rather, I’m happy to see someone who loves Ara that much.”

“Thank you for saying so.”

“Well then, let me guide you inside. Please, come in.”

I led the guests into the dungeon.

As expected, Junichi seemed to have brought all his chefs, which made me happy as it increased the workforce.

I had been most worried about preparing food for everyone, but things were looking up now.

‘I feel a bit guilty about making the guests cook, but… Isn’t it a win-win situation? I get help, and they get to experience my dungeon.’

As we entered the Infinite Dungeon, everyone looked around in amazement. Even though there wasn’t much to see, their curious expressions were amusing.

“We need to go further in.”

“It’s nerve-wracking.”

Junichi, rarely showing such tension, nodded.

After passing through the garden on the first floor, where Rookies greeted us warmly, we headed down to the lower levels.

As we reached an empty field, Junichi asked while observing the surroundings.

“This looks like it used to be a field… the soil is so fertile. How did you manage to create such fertile land?”

“I used to grow crops here, but everything has moved now. The fertility… probably comes from my ability.”

Though, in reality, it was thanks to the slimes. But since handling slimes is also part of my ability, it wasn’t entirely a lie.

“There are even more surprising things further inside.”

Just then, Ryu Cheon, who was holding Ara in her arms, chimed in.

Junichi burst into laughter at her sudden words and nodded.

“Haha! I’m looking forward to it!”

Seeing them interact was refreshing.

A Chinese person and a Japanese person, having a conversation in Korean—it was quite a sight.

And for some reason, Ara was being surprisingly quiet.

Looking closely, she was snuggled up to Ryu Cheon, wriggling around.

‘How cute!!’

I tried hard to suppress my inner dad-mode and led the way.

Before long, the entrance to the Dungeon of Gluttony appeared.

“If you cross through this door, you’ll reach the area where our fields are. Would you like to go ahead?”

I stood at the back, watching each person enter one by one.

First, Ryu Cheon and Ara crossed through, followed by Yu Bihong, then the Japanese guests.

“Gulp.”

Junichi swallowed nervously.

Seeing this, Orie crossed through first, as if teasing him.

Since Orie had visited before with Jaeseong, she displayed the confidence of an experienced guest.

After everyone had passed through, I was the last to cross the door.

“Wow!”

“Ooh!!”

Expressions of awe, mostly in Japanese, erupted from all around.

Even Yu Bihong, visiting the dungeon for the first time, was wide-eyed, paying no attention to Ryu Cheon as she looked around.

‘Ahh.’

This moment might be the most thrilling.

As much as I enjoy people eating my food, there’s nothing more nerve-wracking and exciting than introducing them to my home.

“Well, shall we head to the village?”

“Village?! There’s a village too?”

“Follow me!”

Junichi got excited once again at my words, and though Yu Bihong didn’t say anything, the redness in her cheeks showed she was also quite excited.

As we admired the scenery and the small stream flowing nearby, the Slime Village came into view in the distance.

Since Junichi was a high-level Awakened, he must have seen it from much earlier, though he was clearly holding back the urge to rush over.

“Kyu-seong, did you know?”

“Know what?”

“I’m actually from a farming family in Japan.

So, I have a deep nostalgia for the countryside. I even go back home often to manage the fields myself.”

“Ah!”

“Even for someone like me, seeing this sight… how should I put it… it’s just so beautiful and deeply moving. Thank you so much for inviting us, even though it was such a sudden visit.”

“It’s nothing. Besides, you haven’t even fully enjoyed everything yet. I’ll accept your thanks then.”

“Hahaha! Understood!”

Seeing Junichi’s joy made me feel happy as well.

Before long, amidst the lively chatter, we arrived at the village.

It seemed like they had already seen us coming, as some family members and guild members had come out to greet us.

“Junichi!!”

“Hahaha! Hanul! How have you been!”

The two large men shook hands so vigorously that it almost felt like the air was vibrating around them.

“Hahaha! Is that all you’ve got, Junichi?”

“You rascal! How could you enjoy such a wonderful place all by yourself!!”

“Hahaha! Jealous, aren’t you? Jealous?”

Watching the two of them play around so childishly made me realize that men never truly grow up, no matter their age.

But then again, wasn’t this only Hyung’s second visit as well?

Still, it was nice to see them getting along so well.

“Would you like to look around a bit first? I wonder who should show you around….”

“Me! Me! I’ll do it!”

Ara, who had been calmly resting in Ryu Cheon’s arms, raised her hand excitedly.

Her cute enthusiasm made everyone smile and nod in agreement.

“Of course, of course. Our Ara should be the one to lead!”

“No one knows this place better than Ara, so she’s perfect!”

“Our Ara gives the best tours, you know.”

Ara’s pride grew with each compliment, and her shoulders and chin seemed to rise higher and higher.

I quickly decided before her ego could soar too high.

“Alright. Ara, would you lead the tour for us?”

“Yes!!”

“Great. I think I need to finish up a few more things here. Would that be okay?”

“Of course! There’s no one more reliable than Ara as a guide!”

“Thank you, Junichi.”

In reality, most of the work was done, and there were just a few final touches left.

Once I finished those, I’d be able to relax and enjoy myself with everyone.

‘Group hot springs, maybe?’

There were plenty of different kinds of hot springs, and the space was large enough.

Even with the people arriving tomorrow, there would still be plenty of room.

I’d heard on the way that Junichi had brought a new prototype of his latest alcohol.

He was still researching drinks with my ingredients, and I figured I should ask him to make something with some rice this time.

“Follow me! I’ll introduce you to the fields first!”

“Ooh! The fields! Kyu-seong’s crops!!”

Lesson 1

TOC | Next

“It’s a simple transaction. C-class, one year. B-class, ten years. A-class, thirty years.”

And, continued the middle-aged man, introducing himself as the Director of Legal Affairs at the Hero Association.

“For S-class, a reduction of a hundred years.”

He placed a thick stack of documents down and leaned back in his chair.

“How about it? For you, with 188 years still remaining, it must be a tempting offer.”

The Director, sliding his glasses back up his nose, clasped his hands together. His utterly relaxed demeanor exuded confidence that the deal would certainly be made.

However, beyond the transparent wall, the young man who heard the story seemed uninterested, resting his chin on his hand and merely observing the Director.

Casually brushing back his shaggy hair, he spoke nonchalantly, “The number changed two days ago. It’s 187 years now.”

The Director’s fingertips twitched.

There was neither a clock nor a calendar, not even a window in the solitary cell—nothing to mark the passage of time except the three meals a day. How could he have been counting the years so meticulously?

Trying to hide his surprise, the Director nodded briefly. “Ah, is that so? My apologies.”

“No need to apologize. That’s not what’s important,” the young man responded indifferently, much to the Director’s dismay.

The Director, taken aback by the young man’s lukewarm response, asked again, “Why is that? Isn’t it an offer without room for hesitation?”

A total of 195 years of imprisonment.

Only 8 years have passed so far.

According to the special laws for villains, parole was impossible for the young man before him. No human would ever want to die old in such a dreadful solitary confinement.

Yet, the young man remained lethargic, or rather, seemed bored, merely blinking his eyes. The Director found his demeanor utterly baffling.

“Do you really intend to stay in this prison until you die of old age?”

Villain Jeong Ho-cheol.

It’s been over 10 years since that story.

In the past, the Director had seen Ho-cheol from a distance. During his villain days, Ho-cheol seemed like a being beyond human—an entity as sharp and dangerous as a freshly honed blade, an unpredictable time bomb, a ravenous beast. No description could fully capture his menacing essence.

However, now, beyond the wall, he was nothing more than an unemployed bum wasting away his days.

Ho-cheol yawned languidly, smacked his lips, and scratched his cheek.

“I’m not saying I’m not interested, but it feels off. Isn’t this a scam?”

“A scam?” the Director echoed, his eyebrows lifting in surprise.

“It’s embarrassing to say this, but considering what I’ve done… and you’re offering to let me out?”

Ho-cheol’s suspicion was natural.

There was no precedent, not even a villain comparable to him in the history of this country.

In fact, even the 200-year sentence was a reduced punishment, not revealing the unspeakable crimes he had committed. If those were disclosed, 200 years would be nothing. It might as well have been 500 years.

The Director stroked his chin as he replied. “It’s hard to explain in detail, but it’s adult circumstances.”

“That makes it even more suspicious, doesn’t it?”

Ho-cheol’s gaze grew more suspicious. Such statements were often merely disguises to hide sinister motives.

“If you’re planning to make me do something strange, forget it. I’ve stopped doing bad things.”

“I understand your concerns, but that’s not the case. It should be fine.”

“Really?”

“The times have changed.”

Ho-cheol looked skeptical but nodded for now.

“Well, since no newspapers come in here, I’ll have to take your word for it. But still.”

His chin rested on his hand, tilting further until it almost touched the table.

“There’s something else I don’t understand. It’s actually why I think you might be a fraud.”

He idly tugged at his ear. “You want me to babysit kids at an academy? And my sentence gets reduced based on the hero grades my class achieves?”

It was comedic to think that a villain would be tasked with instructing at a Hero Academy. And even more so that he was the main character of this comedy.

“What kind of nonsense is that?”

If he were an association member, and for whatever reason thought of using a villain, there were far simpler and easier ways.

“Wouldn’t it be easier for you if I just took down S-grade villains? Or if not, deploy me to block gates and collect monster heads.”

Even if Ho-cheol had a natural talent for teaching, it would take years to properly train academy newbies into full-fledged heroes.

For immediate results, it would be quicker and easier for Ho-cheol to take down the heads of S-grade villains.

“If you really cared about the citizens, you would have asked me to eliminate villains, not train heroes.”

For the first time since their conversation began, the Director shut his mouth. He sighed deeply and closed his eyes.

He hadn’t even considered such a dialogue.

He thought Ho-cheol would jump at the chance for a sentence reduction.

The possibility of the deal falling through was not easy to dismiss.

After weighing the information, he opened his eyes again.

“Alright. Let me explain it step by step. It’s impossible to deploy you for villain elimination or gate-blocking operations. Conditional release and sentence reductions are vehemently opposed by the purists in the association. If it weren’t for the emergency situation, such a judicial deal wouldn’t have happened.”

Ho-cheol’s half-closed eyes flickered. A hint of curiosity sparkled in his eyes, which had cleared a bit.

“Emergency situation.”

Now that sounded a bit more interesting.

Meanwhile, the Director took off his glasses and rubbed the wrinkles on his forehead. After smoothing out some of the lines, he continued.

“Even if you were deployed for villain elimination, public outcry would boil over at any civilian harm, demanding you be thrown back in jail.”

Even if the citizens didn’t think so, the purists who would cling to political or ethical issues were plentiful.

If it’s just that bad, it’s still manageable. Those people are the kind who would go further and provoke Ho-cheol first just to cause trouble.

“Also, the gate-blocking operations are no different. Even if we were to deploy you purely for strategic purposes, in situations where massive profits are tied between corporations and the government, no one would welcome your presence. If you were deployed, the association’s donations would be halved… no, they might vanish entirely.”

“I see. The association is weaker than I thought.”

“But the academy is different. At least within the academy, we have complete control over internal matters, and there’s no risk of any noise leaking to the outside.”

“It sounds like the higher-ups, worried about their approval ratings, chose the best possible option instead of the optimal one.”

Ho-cheol waved his hand dismissively in a mocking gesture.

“Understood. But here’s the thing. Forget the public and politicians for a moment—will the heroes even allow me to get out?”

It was a perfectly reasonable question. The Director responded without hesitation.

“That won’t be a problem. Only a small number of heroes know your face and real name. Convincing them will suffice. Oh, and naturally, your public identity will be that of a C-grade villain selected as a pilot case for the villain rehabilitation project.”

A C-grade villain.

That level could be easily subdued by ordinary people with a gun or a car. Neither the academy nor the media would be overly concerned.

Ho-cheol nodded slightly but then tilted his head as a question suddenly came to mind.

“But among the few heroes you have to convince, isn’t Tae-yang one of them?”

An S-grade hero.

Tae-yang. A name that comes up without hesitation when discussing the strongest hero.

“That guy’s quite stringent.”

Strength wasn’t the only issue. His firm sense of justice was such that he advocated for the introduction of the death penalty for villains. Naturally, he would be the example of such a death sentence, and if he vehemently opposed his own release, wouldn’t that be too much of a burden for even politicians to handle?

“Um. That’s…”

The director started to say something but then fell silent.

Ho-cheol’s question was not the kind that could be easily answered. It wasn’t that he didn’t know; it was one of the biggest taboos in modern hero society.

But Ho-cheol could find out anyway. It might be better to confess the truth beforehand and build some trust, however slight, than to hide it.

After all, as long as they didn’t find out his real purpose, that was enough.

The director sighed as if in resignation.

“He’s retired.”

“Really? He might be old but should still be in his prime. Did he get injured?”

Ho-cheol chuckled lightly.

It was a ridiculous question, even coming from him.

A monster capable of erasing a city from the map if he so wished. It was unimaginable that such a strong man could get hurt.

Maybe it was marriage.

“No. He turned into a villain.”

“Uh?”

Ho-cheol was the first to utter something foolish.

He relaxed his chin-propped posture and leaned forward.

His attitude was markedly different from before.

“The grumpy old man who always talked about justice? So, they caught him?”

“Yes. They barely managed to capture him with four S-class and several A-class heroes. Two of the S-class heroes even retired due to severe injuries.”

Ho-cheol tapped the desk lightly, impressed.

“Things are finally starting to come together.”

In this country, there are fewer than 20 S-class heroes. Now, three of them have simultaneously retired. It was more than just a crisis.

An S-class hero wasn’t just a measure of national security but a representation of national power itself, akin to the country’s dignity.

The director emphasized in a serious tone,

“For your information, this is top secret. It’s been announced that they all stopped public activities for a top-secret mission.”

Ho-cheol twisted the corner of his mouth in a sneer.

“Even a hero past his prime is used like this? It’s ruthless.”

Even if they had retired, the mere spread of such rumors could suppress the activities of villains.

Ho-cheol waved his hand dismissively at the still-serious Director.

“Don’t worry, I’m not loose-lipped. I was wondering why they would drag someone like me into this, but it seems all the decent heroes are being pulled back into action.”

The director averted his gaze and coughed awkwardly.

A symbol of peace.

An invincible hero.

His mere existence had reduced the crime rate by more than 10%.

Currently, the Hero Association was experiencing the worst manpower shortage in its history.

“Really, you should have told me from the beginning.”

“Indeed, that would have been better.”

“This is certainly getting interesting.”

Ho-cheol stood up from his seat.

“Then let’s proceed as you suggested. When does it start?”

“All the procedures are completed.”

The director picked up the document he had initially shaken.

“Just sign this document, and it will take effect immediately.”

“Good, let’s see it right away.”

“Wait a moment. We left all communicators outside when we came in. I’ll call the guard outside to pass the documents.”

“Do we really need to do that?”

Ho-cheol stretched and stood up, then raised his index finger to the transparent barrier separating him and the director.

Cooooook

“Instead of a handshake, shall we do an E.T.?”

The director said, half-smiling.

However, he was shocked by the absurd situation unfolding before his eyes and abruptly stood up. Ho-cheol’s index finger slowly but surely penetrated the wall.

“Wait! What are you doing!”

Crackle!

The wall, which would not be scratched by bullets or grenades, could not stop a single finger.

Within seconds, his index finger had completely penetrated the 10 cm thick wall. Ho-cheol did not stop there; he drew his finger downwards.

Down, left, up, and then right, his hand drew a perfect square with a sharp noise.

Lastly, by lightly touching the center of the square, a hole appeared in the wall.

Whirr!

The ceiling lights turned bright red, and a sharp siren blared. Simultaneously, shouts of a level one security breach were heard from afar.

Ho-cheol, the cause of the incident, nonchalantly reached through the hole to grab the documents.

Looking at the director, who stood in a half-seated, half-standing awkward position, he scoffed.

“Why are you so shocked? Did you really think you could keep me confined?”

“How… How is this possible?”

The director was beyond astonished.

Of course, given Ho-cheol’s abilities, breaking through that wall should have been no trouble in the past. However, the handcuffs he wore were supposed to suppress his powers.

Yet he had breached the wall so effortlessly…

He realized it belatedly.

Ho-cheol hadn’t failed to escape. He just hadn’t bothered to.

A prison hundreds of meters underwater, guarded by hundreds of armed wardens, handcuffs that suppress abilities, doors that could stop missiles, and a security system deemed invincible. None could contain Ho-cheol.

It was the worst-case scenario he had feared.

Yet, for some reason, the director couldn’t feel any sense of crisis. Ho-cheol, sitting at the desk reading the documents, seemed too peaceful. Furthermore, he felt a sense of dissonance greater than mere anxiety.

Why had Ho-cheol, who had been so composed all this while, caused such a scene just to read the documents more quickly?

“Is that so…”

The director slumped down where he stood.

This was a kind of message from Ho-cheol. If he could do this, so could others with similar skills.

The director resolved to change Tae-yang’s confinement area as soon as he returned.

However, one question still lingered.

“Why haven’t you escaped until now?”

Ho-cheol, while reading the documents, replied nonchalantly,

“Just.”

He licked his fingertip and turned the page quickly, checking the contents.

“It seems like there’s no trickery in the contract. After all, what would I do if I got caught?”

The director clenched his fist. He spoke again, more seriously, “Don’t beat around the bush. I need to hear the reason.”

“Do you? Then I guess I have to tell you.”

Ho-cheol answered briefly, without even looking at him.

“Because that would be wrong.”

Such a simple and obvious reason.

Among the various reasons the director had anticipated, he hadn’t expected this answer. He was left speechless.

Before long, having finished checking all the documents, Ho-cheol looked up at the director again.

“I’d like to sign it right away. Do you have a pen?”

It was a basic rule during villain visits not to hand over anything that could be used as a weapon.

However, the director readily pulled out a pen from his pocket and handed it over.

“Thank you.”

Ho-cheol immediately wrote his name in the signature field.

Bang!

Less than a minute later, heavily armed guards rushed in. They broke through the door and aimed their guns at Ho-cheol, but he calmly continued signing his name in the blank space.

“Director, are you okay! Team 1, protect the director and subdue the escapee! If he resists, shoo……………!”

But before the security team could pull their triggers, the director raised his hand to stop them.

“That’s enough.”

“What? But this situation…”

The director crossed his arms and addressed the head of security, “This entire situation was intended by me. He pointed out a vulnerability in this facility, and at my request, he personally proved it. So everyone back off. I’ll explain the situation in detail when I visit the director myself.”

“……Alright, understood.”

The head of security hesitated, clearly troubled, but eventually sighed and backed off.

After all, he was a public servant, and he lacked the courage to disobey the orders of a far superior official.

Once the security team had left, and Ho-cheol had apparently finished signing, he pushed the pen and documents back.

“You’re not completely oblivious, huh? There, the signature is done. Can I leave now?”

The director shook his head as if bewildered.

“Sorry, but you can’t leave immediately. There’s a release procedure to follow.”

Ho-cheol scratched the back of his head.

“Can’t you just push it through with your authority instead of acting like a bureaucrat?”

Of course, that wasn’t possible.

***

Four more days passed.

Rumble!

The chained iron gate, several meters high, unlocked and swung open. Ho-cheol walked out from between its massive doors.

“Hmm.”

He looked up at the sky. Bright sunlight poured down from the sun overhead.

“I didn’t expect to see the sun alive again.”

He closed his eyes and tilted his head back, enjoying the pleasant warmth as he soaked in the vitamin D for the first time in a long while.

About 30 minutes passed. Once he regained his composure, he looked around.

“Isn’t there supposed to be someone to meet me?”

He was told there would be someone to pick him up at the time of his release. But as far as he could see, not even a mouse was in sight.

How long had he been squatting by the roadside?

Vroom—

From a distance, a car with heavy tinted windows raced towards him and skidded to a stop in front of him.

The window rolled down, and the woman holding the steering wheel pushed up her sunglasses to meet Ho-cheol’s eyes.

“Hey, sorry. There was more traffic than I expected. Ah, you are Jung Ho-cheol, right? Released today?”

“Are you the monitor assigned by the association to keep an eye on me?”

The woman nodded. Her shoulder-length brown hair swayed lightly.

“Yes. I’m Han So-hee, associate from Legal Affairs Team 3. And rather than calling it a monitoring role, how about partner? Sounds better, don’t you think? Anyway.”

She pulled out a business card from her pocket and handed it to him.

“Pleased to meet you?”

Round 217

I was a little taken aback by the unexpected visitors. However, I quickly came to think that it wasn’t a bad thing—what’s good is good, after all. Since we were all going to have a gathering tomorrow anyway, a few extra guests wouldn’t make much difference. In fact, it might be a good chance for everyone to bond and enjoy themselves.

‘But how did the timing work out so perfectly?’

I decided to make a call just in case. The guild master answered right away.

-Yes, Kyu-seong. You checked quickly.

“Yes, Guild Master! I just stepped outside for a moment to check if there were any messages, and I was quite surprised.”

-We were too. Both parties arrived without any notice, and we were in a bit of a bind.

-Ah, sorry about that.

I heard Junichi’s voice from the other side of the line. His usual cheerful tone felt familiar and welcoming.

-Haha, just joking. By the way, Kyu-seong, would it be alright if these guests joined as well?

“Of course! It’s actually great.”

-Understood. By the way, Ryu Cheon and Junichi were wondering if they could visit today. Is that okay with you? Oh, and it seems Junichi brought along his chefs as well.

“Oh wow! Helpers!”

-Sorry?

“No, nothing. I misspoke. I was just going to say that they’re more than welcome to come today.”

-Great. In that case, we’ll leave in about an hour.

“Are you coming as well, Guild Master?”

-I’ll probably have to join the others tomorrow. For today, I’ll send Ryu Cheon and Junichi first.

“Got it!”

After finishing the call, I returned to the dungeon and shared the news with everyone.

“Junichi’s coming?!!” Hanul hyung swallowed nervously with excitement. He probably assumed Junichi would bring some alcohol.

Oh, and speaking of which, the alcohol made from my ingredients was slowly being sold in limited quantities. However, it wasn’t widely available, being sold only in Junichi’s shop and at Ironblood Foods.

‘I’ve heard it’s being called a legendary liquor.’

Despite selling it at a lower price, the price had skyrocketed due to its scarcity. But releasing too much at once could harm other liquor companies, so I was being cautious and only selling small amounts. Most of it was consumed by people I knew, to be honest. Even my dad had a few bottles stored away at home. I told him not to worry since I could always get more, but both he and I shrank under my mom’s stern gaze.

“Is Ryu Cheon coming too?”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

“I must look good for my fan. I’ll change clothes, then.”

Ara was still in her swimsuit, but her appearance was so cute that I laughed.

“If Ryu Cheon sees you like this, she’ll probably be so happy she’ll pass out.”

“What happens if he passes out?!”

“It’s just a joke. It means she’d be really happy.”

“That’s a dangerous joke, Kyu-seong Kyu-seong!”

Her adorable reaction melted everyone’s hearts. I then approached Jae-seong, who was cooking, to share the news.

“The boss is coming?”

“And he’s bringing all the other chefs too.”

“Oh….”

He looked a bit flustered.

Why does he seem worried? Shouldn’t he be happy about this?

“Why did he send me on vacation alone? If I had known this would happen, I would’ve waited and worked with them.”

“Ah, so that’s what’s bothering you.”

I nodded sympathetically at Jae-seong’s frustration. I guess he had a point, though it wasn’t really my place to comment, seeing as I was the one giving him work.

“They’re leaving in an hour, so they should be here in about two.”

“Got it. I’ll work hard until then.”

As Jae-seong was grilling some pancakes, I suddenly thought of something and asked him.

“When do you plan to open your own restaurant?”

“Hmm, not sure.”

“Maybe it’s time to start preparing?”

“You mean you?”

“Yeah. Is it too soon?”

“No, it’s not that. I just feel bad. You’re handling the ingredients and even the location, and I’m not doing anything…”

“Hey, it’s my little brother’s restaurant. What’s there to feel bad about? Besides, your cooking skills are the most important thing, and you’re working hard on that.”

“Hmm.”

“Oh, and I’ve already hired an employee. It’s a kid from the orphanage Ara visits. They want to become a chef, so I asked if they’d like to start working at our restaurant.”

“Thanks a lot, hyung. I should start paying more attention too.”

“Just focus on cooking. I’ll take care of the rest. Dad’s on a break, so we’ll handle the preparations together. If you have any requests for the interior or equipment, just let me know.”

“Got it. Thanks, hyung.”

While I was there, I worked hard with Jae-seong to make the pancakes.

When everyone was full, we energetically started working again.

“You can rest a bit longer, though.”

Aren’t we supposed to nap after a snack before getting back to work?

Why is everyone so eager?

“After receiving such a delicious meal, how could we rest?”

“Kyu-seong-nim and your family, please just sit back! We’ll handle everything!”

The guild members rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

Thanks to them, my parents took a short break to play with the kids.

—Hehe.

—Kyu-it.

The kids were so adorable, just watching them was healing.

Then, I suddenly noticed something strange about Soo’s head.

‘What’s this?’

Something felt off, so I called Soo.

“Soo!”

—Kyu-ing.

Soo came trotting over, as if there were sound effects with each step.

“Soo, let me check your head.”

—Kyu-ing.

There were a few leaves on Soo’s head, but now there was a new stem that hadn’t been there before.

At the end of the stem, there was a small bud.

As I was checking it out, Ara came running over to see it too.

“Ohhh, is a flower going to bloom on Soo’s head?”

“A flower? Oh, is it really a flower?”

I never even imagined it.

Could a flower really bloom from Soo’s head?

Sure, Soo is an herb spirit, but still… a spirit, right?

Spirits, hmm, I don’t know.

‘I really don’t know much about spirits, huh.’

I should ask President Baek from Iron Blood about it next time.

Since he’s a summoner, he might know a thing or two about spirits.

“What’s up? Something wrong?”

Seon-ah, who had just approached, saw me holding Soo and asked.

“Take a look at this.”

“What about Soo?”

“A new stem grew from Soo’s head. Doesn’t it look like a flower bud?”

“Oh, that? It’s been growing for a few days now. You didn’t notice?”

“No, I didn’t.”

“You should pay more attention to the kids.”

I gave an awkward smile at Seon-ah’s scolding.

I had only been checking if they were doing well, but as expected, Seon-ah, who was in charge of their health, knew much more than I did.

“Even though Soo is a spirit, he started out as an herb, right?”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

“Each spirit has their own unique characteristics, so it’s hard to define their biology in general terms.

Just think of Soo as her own kind of spirit.

Besides, spirits don’t get sick, so you don’t need to worry about it.”

“Ohh, I see.”

So, spirits don’t get sick.

That meant this flower bud-like thing wasn’t a disease, and I could be somewhat relieved.

—Kyu-ing.

“That’s right. Soo, stay healthy and happy always.”

—Kyu?

When I set Soo down, he whined as if asking to be picked up again.

Ara took him by the hand and led him away, walking around with him.

“So cute. I feel so happy.”

Hearing Seon-ah’s content murmur, I started preparing to greet the new guests that were about to arrive.

“I’m going to head out for a bit.”

“Oh, the guests?”

“Yeah.”

“Alright.”

Seon-ah suddenly pulled out a mirror to check her makeup.

Ever since she heard some famous awakeners were coming, she’d been doing that.

‘Even though she’s met them all before, she’s really putting in effort.’

She must really like awakeners.

“Ara, do you want to come with me? I’m going to see Ryu Cheon.”

“Ryu Cheon! Let’s go!”

Ara, holding Soo in her arms, shouted excitedly.

“Soo, do you want to come too?”

“Soo will go too.”

—Kyu-ing?

Since we were only going out for a short while, it didn’t matter much.

So, I took Ara and Soo with me outside.

The grounds were empty.

It seemed they hadn’t arrived yet.

When I checked the messages, it looked like they would arrive in about 10 minutes.

“Yu Bihong is coming, Junichi is coming, and even Orie.”

“So many are coming! It’s a festival!”

“Yeah, it’s a festival.”

While waiting for people to arrive, my phone suddenly rang.

It was a call from President Baek.

Why was he calling so suddenly? Could it be…

‘Did he hear about the party?’

It was entirely possible.

With Ryu Cheon and Junichi both in Korea, he might have discovered that we were having a gathering during his investigation.

I answered the call.

“Yes, President Baek!”

—Oh! The call connected! What a relief. Haha.

“I happened to be outside right now.”

—Great, great. Actually, I heard some news a little while ago and thought I’d contact you quickly.

“Yes, please go ahead.”

—Well, I heard that the Sky Scraper Guild and Junichi from Japan have come to Korea. Aren’t they people you know, Kyu-seong-nim? I heard from Ara Hongryeon that you’re having a gathering…

“Yes, we’re all having a get-together at the dungeon tomorrow.”

—Ahem. Well, Kyu-seong-nim…

“Would you like to join us, President Baek?”

—Gasp! Would that be alright?

“Of course. But we can’t accommodate too many people.”

—Oh, well, would it be alright if I bring my son and daughter-in-law? Oh, and Awakener Kim Tae-yang, since he has ties with you.

“That would be fine.”

—Oh my, thank you, Kyu-seong-nim! Then we’ll prepare and head over by tomorrow! When should we arrive?

“You can come early! Feel free to come in the morning.”

—I’ll be there by morning. Thank you so much, Kyu-seong-nim!

“No problem. I’m looking forward to seeing you and Seung-hyun again.”

The number of people had unexpectedly increased.

But I couldn’t turn them away.

Well, there wasn’t any reason to, was there?

‘It’s all just for fun anyway.’

But just as I thought that, my phone started ringing again.

Round 216

Prev | TOC | Next

“Ara, there’s a saying like this.”

“???”

“Myeong-gyeong-ji-su.”

“Myeong-gyeong-ji-su?”

“It means having a clear and calm mind. When fishing, you should always think of this Myeong-gyeong-ji-su and watch patiently.”

“Oooh, Myeong-gyeong-ji-su….”

Ara nodded as if she had learned something new, admiring it with a sigh.

She, dressed in a children’s swimsuit with snorkeling gear, began to quietly stare at the sea.

Ara had been tasked with collecting seafood by Kyu-seong, and so, with a Myeong-gyeong-ji-su mindset, she crouched down and stared endlessly at the water.

If Kyu-seong had seen her, he would have sighed and thought, “She’s learning something strange again,” but he wasn’t here right now.

Tadadak!

“Got it!”

Just then, Lee Hyun-woo’s fishing rod shook. The line and the rod tightened.

Seeing this, Ara spoke with half-closed eyes.

“It’s Myeong-gyeong-ji-su, Grand Lord.”

“Yes! Myeong-gyeong-ji-su! Heave-ho! Oh, oh!”

It seemed as if a massive fish had bitten the hook, and Lee Hyun-woo looked like he might get pulled in.

Seeing this, Ara quickly stood up and grabbed his fishing rod together.

“Myeong-gyeong-ji-su!!”

“With the heart of Myeong-gyeong-ji-su!!”

Grandfather and granddaughter joined forces. Soon the fish began to draw closer.

Their teamwork looked practiced, and before long, the fish was pulled ashore.

“Hahaha! It’s a big catch again! A jackpot!”

“It’s Myeong-gyeong-ji-su, Grand Lord.”

“Yes, Myeong-gyeong-ji-su. Never forget this mindset.”

Lee Hyun-woo, who had been excited, quickly regained his composure and wore a serious expression.

Ara, satisfied, nodded and then turned back to gaze at the sea once again.

Strict, solemn, serious. Now with Myeong-gyeong-ji-su added to the mix, Ara’s “look cool” project was not yet finished.

At that moment, a portal flickered, and someone emerged.

When Hyun-woo and Ara checked, it was Kyu-seong, Jae-seong, and Seon-ah.

Surprised by the arrival of the three siblings, the two quickly ran toward Jae-seong, whom they hadn’t seen in a long time.

“Lee Jae-seong Jae-seong!”

“Jae-seong, what brings you here? Work?”

“I took a short vacation to come out. Hi, Ara. How have you been?”

Jae-seong, smiling warmly, lifted Ara up in a hug. Ara, about to burst into a joyful laugh, quickly hardened her expression.

“Ara? What’s wrong?”

When Kyu-seong asked with concern, everyone turned their attention to Ara.

“It’s Myeong-gyeong-ji-su. I must remain clear and calm.”

“Myeong-gyeong-ji-su? Oh, you mean Myeong-…”

“Oppa, don’t correct her. Just leave it,” Seon-ah quickly covered Kyu-seong’s mouth and shook her head. It seemed she liked Ara’s pronunciation.

“But where did she learn something like that…?”

As Kyu-seong was about to speak again, he glanced at Hyun-woo.

There was no need to ask. The answer was right there.

Whenever Ara went fishing with Hyun-woo, she would return having learned a new word. This time, it seemed to be Myeong-gyeong-ji-su.

Although it wasn’t a word Hyun-woo used often, Kyu-seong thought, “It’s him again.”

“Jae-seong came, so we’re here to greet you. Also, people from the guild have arrived.”

“Weren’t the guests supposed to come tomorrow?”

“They came to help. It’s hard for us to prepare on our own.”

Nodding at Kyu-seong’s words, Hyun-woo pointed to the fish they had caught.

“Take it.”

“Sure. Jae-seong, let’s prep it in advance.”

While the Dungeon of Gluttony was bustling with activity, at the airport, unexpected individuals were crossing paths.

After receiving a sudden call from Junichi, Choi Young-seong headed to Incheon International Airport.

Despite being busy with the by-products Kyu-seong had brought in, Young-seong went to greet Junichi, who had arrived without prior notice.

“Haha, you’re here! I was a bit surprised since you said you’d come all of a sudden!”

Young-seong greeted him warmly, to which Junichi scratched his head with an apologetic expression.

“Well, I just couldn’t resist. It seems I’ve been visiting Korea frequently lately.”

“But Junichi, did you come because you heard the news?”

“What news?”

“I’m talking about our guild’s gathering.”

“A gathering?”

Junichi’s confused reaction made Young-seong realize that he wasn’t aware.

As Young-seong pondered whether to explain, a commotion suddenly broke out at one corner of the airport.

“Ryu-cheon? Is that Ryu-cheon?!”

“Wow! It’s Ryu-cheon! From the Skyscraper Guild!”

“Wow, she’s so beautiful! Even celebrities can’t compare!”

Ryu-cheon?

At the sudden noise, not only Choi Young-seong but also Junichi and the chefs who came with him were all surprised.

“Ryu-cheon? Could it really be that Ryu-cheon?”

“Let’s go check it out.”

As Junichi and Choi Young-seong headed towards the commotion, the people at the airport went wild.

“Is that… Ino Junichi?!”

“What’s going on today? Is there a special event?”

“They didn’t come together, did they? Did they plan to meet in Korea?”

They couldn’t answer the crowd’s questions. After all, they had also coincidentally arrived in Korea on the same day, at the same time.

When they finally reached where Ryu-cheon was, they saw Yu Bihong clearing a path.

“Ryu-cheon?”

At Choi Young-seong’s voice, Yu Bihong reacted.

“Oh? Manager Choi?!”

“No way, what brings you to Korea… no, let’s just get out of the airport first.”

They barely managed to get through the crowd and finally boarded the Ara Hongryeon’s vehicle.

“I called for a car, but I feel a bit sorry.”

“It’s fine since we paid the fare. But I didn’t expect you to come to Korea so suddenly.”

“Ahaha… Yes, it was a sudden decision. I’m sorry for not notifying you in advance.”

As Yu Bihong awkwardly apologized, Ryu-cheon was simply gazing blankly out the window.

Despite her dazed expression, her enduring beauty couldn’t be hidden, prompting Orie, who had come with Junichi, to ask him a question.

“Who is she?”

“Ryu-cheon from the Skyscraper Guild in China, the youngest Level 8 awakened.”

“Oh! Ah, yes! Now I remember. I thought I’d seen her somewhere before, and it turns out it was her. I didn’t expect to meet her in Korea.”

After that, the Japanese and Chinese sides started formally introducing themselves. While they knew of each other’s existence, it was surprisingly their first time meeting in person.

“I’m Ino Junichi.”

“I’m Yu Bihong from the Skyscraper Guild, and this is…”

“I’m Ryu-cheon.”

The Chinese and Japanese were communicating in Korean, while the Koreans watched from the side.

Choi Young-seong couldn’t help but smile as he tried to hide the corners of his mouth curving upwards.

What kind of situation was this?

Through the ensuing conversation, it became clear that both Junichi’s group and Ryu-cheon were in Korea because of Lee Kyu-seong.

“A grand unification.”

“It’s amazing what Kyu-seong has brought together.”

As Yu Bihong and Junichi found themselves aligned, their conversation soon turned to Kyu-seong.

Meanwhile, Ryu-cheon was muttering to herself.

“Ara, wait for me. I’ll come to you.”

With a resolute expression and voice, it was as if she were a knight going to rescue a princess trapped in a demon castle.

Choi Young-seong immediately called Han Seok-jun.

With such a complicated situation, how would things unfold?

***

“Here’s a snack!”

Seafood pancakes fresh off the grill were served to the two teams and staff who had arrived earlier.

Following the instructions of their mother and Jae-seong, they had been helping with various tasks, and since they were likely getting hungry, food was served.

“Wow, seafood pancakes?!”

“Where did you get the seafood?”

They couldn’t hide their surprise at the sight of dozens of seafood pancakes.

The aroma from the batter made with toasted sesame oil was incredible. Adding to that was the enticing smell of cooked seafood, making everyone’s mouth water.

All the seafood had been gathered by Ara herself.

Clams, small crustaceans, and cephalopods resembling squid were all included.

“Oh, Ara! You’re back! Hahaha!”

“Oh! Brother Hanul! Long time no see! Hehehe!”

“Hahaha! That swimsuit suits you well, and so does the snorkel!”

“I caught all of this! Everything in these seafood pancakes, I caught them!”

“Wow! Really? You’re just like my heir!”

“Yes! I’m Brother Hanul’s heir!”

Who said you could make Ara your heir?

As I listened to their cute conversation, I set the table.

“Please, start eating.”

“Let’s finish eating first, and then we can continue.”

At the encouragement of Mom and Jae-seong, everyone gathered around and sat down.

Soon, they began tasting the seafood pancakes.

“Wow!”

“It’s hot! But it’s so good I can’t stop!”

“Hmm! This is amazing!”

Seeing their enthusiastic reactions made me feel happy. I sat down next to Ara and tasted the pancakes myself.

“Mmm!”

The rich flavor of the crustaceans blended perfectly with the toasted sesame oil in the batter, creating a magnificent harmony.

Crunchy and savory—an unbeatable combination.

The firm clam meat and chewy squid enhanced the experience, prolonging the savory taste and texture.

Once the initial wave of savoriness passed, the flavor of the seafood began to shine, filling my mouth with the sweetness and scent of the ocean.

It felt like the sea had passed through my taste buds, lingering for a moment before drifting away.

“Delicious.”

Indeed, seafood is the best.

Of course, there are people who don’t like seafood, but as someone who loves it, this was a flavor you couldn’t easily buy.

‘But the highlight is still left.’

That was the soy sauce!

Dipping seafood pancakes in soy sauce is the key. This soy sauce was made by Jae-seong using the soy base I had brewed myself.

Dip, and eat.

The crispy edges and softened parts soaked in the sauce created an incredible bite.

“Hmph!”

I let out a strange noise without realizing it.

But instead of feeling embarrassed, I focused on devouring the pancakes.

Dip, eat, dip, eat.

This soy sauce was divine.

It wasn’t too salty, and the subtle sourness and the rich flavor of the soy stood out beautifully.

The umami was undeniable.

‘I should start making pancakes more often.’

Before that, I’d better ask Jae-seong how he made this sauce.

“Hmm?”

Before I knew it, the mountain of seafood pancakes had almost disappeared.

Considering the large group and the fact that Ara and the other kids had eaten a lot, I thought I had made enough, but they ate far more than expected.

Well, it makes sense.

Even I had eaten four pancakes.

Normally, one would have been enough to satisfy me.

“Anyone want more?”

“Uh, um…”

“Ahem, me too…!”

People raised their hands hesitantly.

In the end, Jae-seong smiled and went back to grilling more pancakes.

I decided to take this opportunity to step out for a bit.

I considered taking Ara with me, but she was firmly seated at the table with no intention of leaving.

“Myeong-gyeong-ji-su, Myeong-gyeong-ji-su…”

She mumbled as if reciting a spell.

It seemed she was quite fond of the word Myeong-gyeong-ji-su.

Thank you, Ara, for playing so well with Dad.

“I’ll be stepping out for a moment. I’ll check my messages and be right back.”

“Sure, take your time.”

With their greetings, I stepped outside.

Since the gathering was tomorrow, I had been periodically stepping out every hour or two to check my messages.

“Huh?”

That’s when I saw a text from the guild.

But the content was…

“Ryu-cheon and Junichi?!”

What? Are they really in Korea right now?

Patron 85

Prev | TOC I Next

Alon, having supposedly buried over seven nobles—an accusation he hadn’t even heard before—wore a bewildered expression for only a moment. Unsure how to clear up the misunderstanding, he eventually decided not to respond at all. While misunderstandings about who killed whom should be promptly resolved in ordinary human relationships, he was currently conversing with one of the key players in Asteria’s dark schemes.

“Is that the only reason you contacted me?”

As Alon neither affirmed nor denied, the Duke of Altia nodded.

[Yes, I’ve reported everything to you.]

Having received a report about Kalpha before this conversation, Alon nodded in agreement.

[Then, I’ll see you at the upcoming coronation.]

Watching the Duke of Altia bow, Alon let out a small sigh and thought, “Come to think of it, there’s a coronation coming up.”

Recalling this, Alon began sorting through the pile of letters stacked in one corner of his office desk. Soon, he found one bearing the royal family’s seal and a paper beneath it. It was from the royal secretary, containing various trivial formalities, but essentially stated that Count Palatio was away for an extended period, so he had only left the letter behind.

“The coronation… is in four months, right?”

Four months.

Alon considered this period, which could be seen as either long or short, and then remembered something else.

“In about four months, it will be just under a year before the original story begins.”

The approaching timeline, which he had experienced countless times in the game, was a strange mix of emotions for Alon, but only for a moment.

“…By then, there will be a whole truckload of enemies to deal with.”

He recalled the enemies that would emerge as the original storyline began.

“While the Proxy was dealt with, the Ghost Castle hasn’t been handled yet.”

Remembering the situation he had checked before going to the Colony, Alon let out a small sigh and leaned back in his chair. There was more to deal with than he initially thought.

“I have to take care of the current troublemakers, as well as the hidden Outer Gods.”

In fact, handling the current troublemakers was not that difficult. In Psychedelia, apart from the Outer Gods or the five great sins, the entities that could truly plunge the entire United Kingdom into chaos and conflict only became active when the original story started.

Of course, Alon’s goal was to lead a leisurely life by the time such chaos descended upon the United Kingdom. To that end, he had supported Eliban, the main protagonist of the original story.

“When the original story begins, I’ll need to support him once again.”

Thinking about Eliban, who would secure his peaceful future, Alon then shifted his focus back to the Outer Gods, letting out another sigh. Unlike the future entities, the Outer Gods were Alon’s responsibility to handle.

“The problem is that I don’t know where this one is located… Even finding it will be a challenge.”

Alon’s victories against the Outer Gods so far were only possible because they had not yet fully materialized in the world. It wasn’t just that—his wins were also thanks to knowing certain characteristics, or rather, weaknesses, of the Outer Gods.

If he were to face a hidden Outer God, it would likely be a completely different kind of battle.

“Well, as long as I can find out who the Outer God is, I can prepare accordingly. But the real problem is its complete manifestation.”

If the Outer God was indeed hiding on the continent, there was a high likelihood that it was already fully manifested. After descending to the ground, an Outer God becomes fully established as a sage-like entity in a few months.

A fully manifested Outer God would undoubtedly be much stronger than those Alon had faced before. In other words, even if Alon managed to locate an Outer God now, his chances of winning would be slim.

No, not just slim—zero.

While Alon’s magic was powerful enough to affect an Outer God, it still fell short of confronting a fully manifested one. There were clear limitations on how many times he could use magic, and the time it took to cast spells was also significantly long. The only advantage was that once cast, his magic worked effectively against enemies.

“I need to prepare. I should start gathering information on the hidden Outer God.”

Realizing the need to prepare for the battle with the Outer God, Alon looked at the letter from the royal family.

Despite having four months, the time felt surprisingly short.

As Alon sorted out his tasks along with the letter from the royal family, he let out a quiet sigh.

####

It’s been over three weeks since Count Palatio left, yet Penia Crysinne and Felin Crysinne were still traveling alongside Radan.

Of course, Penia’s reason for continuing to accompany Radan was simply for convenience.

Most of what she needed to investigate in Raksas involved the illegal distribution of materials or finished products from the Magic Tower.

And since Alon had made a request before he left, Radan treated Penia and Felin quite well.

Thanks to this, Penia was able to accomplish her tasks faster than planned, with the help of the pirates.

Today, she found herself within the royal castle of Raksas, accompanied by Radan.

However, their purposes and times of arrival at the castle were different, and Penia, who didn’t particularly care about public opinion, had no intention of making it known that she was traveling with the Pirate King.

Therefore, Radan was present as an envoy, aiming to adjust the future relationship between Raksas and the Pirate King, who had unified the Seven Archipelagos.

Penia, on the other hand, was there to confront the kingdom about the secret leak of certain illegally distributed magical items.

Having completed her tasks, Penia was approached by someone familiar.

“It’s been a while, hasn’t it, Penia?”

“Last time I saw you was during the envoy visit… about four years ago?”

“Wow, has it really been that long?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

Penia was meeting Serena Raksasia, the princess of Raksas.

Serena’s relationship with Penia was quite close, largely because of the current Blue Tower Master, Celaime.

As a former disciple of Celaime, Penia had trained in magic alongside Serena, who also came to the Blue Tower due to her talent in magic.

Though Serena eventually returned to Raksas after realizing her limitations, the two had formed a strong bond during their younger years.

“So, how’s your progress in magic lately?”

“Hmm… I think I’m about to reach the next level.”

“Wow, really? That’s amazing.”

“Isn’t it?”

Despite being a princess and a vice-master of the tower, Serena and Penia maintained a relaxed, friendly conversation, as if they were old friends.

After chatting for some time, Serena suddenly remembered something unusual.

“Oh, by the way, I heard some strange news.”

“Strange news?”

“Yeah, I heard you’re being kept by a man.”

“…What? Me?”

Serena nodded at Penia’s baffled expression.

“Yeah, who was it again? Hmm… Oh, Count Palatio? I think it was a noble like that. Is it true?”

“What? Kept by someone? Absolutely not!”

Serena teased Penia, grinning mischievously.

“Come on, the rumor’s everywhere! They say the always fiery you suddenly turns demure in front of Count Palatio.”

Penia frowned, trying to come up with a rebuttal but fell silent.

As she thought about it, Serena’s statement wasn’t entirely incorrect.

Still, she didn’t want to concede so easily.

“No, really, it’s not like that.”

Seeing Penia’s weak denial, Serena’s eyes lit up as if she had found something amusing.

“…You actually like him, don’t you?”

“What? Who?”

“Count Palatio, of course.”

Penia gave Serena an exasperated look as Serena continued with her playful tone.

“No, I don’t!”

“Really?”

Penia, trying to maintain her composure, struggled to respond clearly.

“Absolutely not, even if the sky falls, that won’t happen!”

As Penia recalled Felin’s previous nonsense, Serena watched her with a curious expression.

“Really?”

“Really! I have no idea why everyone keeps misunderstanding this. I honestly don’t like him!”

“Hmm~.”

“It’s true! Who could even like such a stoic person? All he does is put on a stern face and—”

“?”

“…I mean.”

“Palatio is… quite an impressive person. He’s also very… impressive… and, well, impressive.”

“…Isn’t that three times already?”

Penia, trying hard to keep the conversation going, said,

“You know, when you see his magic, there’s just something captivating about it. Count Palatio’s magic is very unique.”

“…Then you like him, right?”

“That’s absolutely—”

“Absolutely?”

“—possible, maybe.”

Serena grinned as Penia bowed her head and spoke with a hint of resignation.

“So you like him, huh?”

“Yeah… I guess so.”

With her head lowered, Penia glanced sideways, catching sight of Radan.

Nodding with a satisfied expression, Radan disappeared from view outside the window.

“Sigh.”

Penia let out a sigh of relief, but Serena, observing her friend’s reaction, thought to herself,

‘It seems like her personality makes it hard for her to make a move.’

Feeling a sudden burst of goodwill towards her dear friend, Serena decided to lend a helping hand.

Penia was met with an unexpected gesture of goodwill.

“Hehe~.”

Having made her decision, Serena let out a faint smile—an insidious smile, completely unaware of her own misconception.

####

Four months later.

After a busy schedule of gathering information to uncover the identity of the Outer God, increasing his mana core capacity, and researching magic, Alon finally boarded a carriage headed for the capital, Terea, just in time for the coronation.

“Count.”

“What is it?”

“Did you hear about this?”

“…What is it this time?”

“There’s a rumor going around about you.”

“…A rumor about me?”

“Yes.”

From Evan, Alon heard about a rather strange rumor.

“It seems there’s a rumor that Penia Crysinne is in love with Count Palatio.”

“What?”

“Penia Crysinne. The Vice Master of the Blue Tower.”

“…What a ridiculous, strange rumor.”

Round 215

Prev | TOC | Next

Jae-seong was finally on leave after a long time.

He couldn’t resist taking a break after Kyu-seong’s message that he’d personally made doenjang, soy sauce, and now even gochujang.

“You’ll be surprised! Hehe.”

Jae-seong smiled warmly as he boarded the bus.

This time, he had secretly left for vacation without telling his family.

Wanting to surprise them, he came to Korea without a word.

From Incheon International Airport to Yangju.

Fortunately, there was a direct bus, and Jae-seong arrived comfortably after some rest.

Full of anticipation, he arrived in front of the house and entered the door lock code.

Beep beep beep beep.

Ding-ding-ding~!

He imagined the surprised faces of his parents welcoming him.

And soon he expected to meet Kyu-seong, Seon-ah, and Ara, but instead, he saw an empty house.

“I’m home~!”

It was cold and silent.

It seemed as though no one was home.

Only then did Jae-seong realize the house was empty, and he tilted his head in confusion.

It was very rare for no one to be home.

In fact, he remembered that his father had been staying home more often since retiring from work.

“Oh!”

Suddenly, he seemed to realize something and let out a small exclamation.

No one was home?

Then there was an obvious conclusion to draw.

“Everyone’s having fun without me!”

Jae-seong quickly stepped back outside and headed toward the dungeon where Kyu-seong was.

Guild dinner D-1.

At that moment, Ryu Cheon was boarding a plane at the airport.

***

“It would be nice if Jae-seong were here for this.”

Now that we had decided to have the guild dinner, there were many concerns.

Although I had confidently extended the invitation, looking at the guest list made it clear that this wouldn’t be an easy task.

I was confident in the dungeon itself.

The serene scenery, the vast space that had everything.

Fishing by the lake? Check.

Relaxing in the hot springs? Check.

Farm and cooking experience? Check.

Cute slime sensory play? Check.

Spacing out with the slugs? Check.

Everything was perfect.

Yes, the dungeon was perfect.

The problem was the food they would be eating while staying here.

Technically, I could ask them to eat my crops raw, but that wouldn’t be appropriate for hosting guests.

Guild Master Han Seok-jun had already offered to help with various facilities and meals, but…

“The costs are higher than the benefits.”

Was it really okay to gather such busy people and make them work for a dinner?

These were people who could earn much more by clearing a dungeon or handling guild business in that time.

‘Maybe I’m overthinking it.’

Guild Master Han Seok-jun had already informed me that he’d be sending people whether I wanted it or not, and by now, the helpers should be arriving.

As preparations progressed, the arrival of reinforcements started to feel like a huge relief.

“Mom, I’m bringing some people in.”

“Okay.”

My mother, eager to help with her son’s work, had rolled up her sleeves. I felt guilty about it.

I had intended to keep it a secret, but with my parents noticing that I had been spending more time in the dungeon, I had to explain about the guild dinner on Friday.

And no matter how much I tried to dissuade them, my parents ended up helping.

Having suddenly turned into a devoted son, I quickly set off for the dungeon.

By the way, Ara was fishing with my father, also gathering seafood to feed the guests.

When I stepped outside, people had already arrived.

They had shown up earlier than the scheduled time, and I greeted them with a smile.

“Hello.”

“Oh, it’s Kyu-seong! I’m here! Hahaha!”

It was Hanul, whom he had seen just two days ago, back again.

Hanul had just cleared the dungeon and received a vacation, yet he had come anyway.

Behind him, the entire Team 2 had shown up.

A few staff members were there too.

“Just tell us what to do, and we’ll do our best!”

“Thank you. Shall we go in then?”

Aside from Hanul, everyone was visiting the dungeon for the first time. Thanks to Hanul’s enthusiastic promotion, they all seemed excited.

“Hyung!”

Suddenly, a familiar voice called from the bottom of the hill.

No way…?

“Jae-seong?”

Had the gods answered my prayers?

Why are you here?

“Thank goodness. I was worried when I couldn’t reach you.”

“What are you doing here? How’s work?”

“I took leave and came. Oh! Hello, everyone. Hehe.”

The bear-like guy scratched his head awkwardly.

Since they had shared the moment of awakening together, everyone was already acquainted.

“Why did you come without saying anything? What if you got lost?”

“It was supposed to be a surprise. But what’s going on? The guild members are here?”

“Perfect timing. You can work here, too.”

“Hyung? I’m on vacation.”

“You came to see my sauces anyway, right? So while you’re here, why don’t you cook with them?”

Jae-seong, who had been puzzled, quickly nodded with a childlike excited expression. Such a simple guy.

In any case, I entered the dungeon proudly, bringing along a great ally and several reinforcements.

“Oh my, welcome.”

“Hello, ma’am! Haha! Leave all the hard work to us!”

My mother got up to greet the people when she saw them.

As everyone politely bowed, I interrupted.

“Mom, look who else is here.”

“Huh? Who?”

After scanning the faces, my mother soon spotted Jae-seong among the staff.

“Oh my, what a surprise!”

“Mom, I’m home.”

“You just show up suddenly without any warning. What happened? How did you get here?”

“I’m on leave. Hehe.”

My mother, perhaps feeling shy about showing her joy, lightly patted Jae-seong’s back.

Jae-seong scratched his head and laughed awkwardly.

“Mom, please take good care of these reinforcements.”

The Team 2 members and guild staff, who had been overwhelmed by the scenery since entering the dungeon, were busy looking around.

While they were distracted, I discreetly pulled Jae-seong aside.

My mother called after us, asking what she should do, but I just wanted to show off my sauces to Jae-seong.

“These jars are still maturing. I’m waiting to see how they’ll turn out.”

“The longer they mature, the deeper the flavor gets. You’ve got to manage them well, hyung.”

“That’s not a problem.”

Even if I make mistakes, the slugs never do.

I saw a few slugs that had stuck themselves to the jars, always guarding them.

“I stored the ones we already scooped out in that storage room. Want to taste some?”

“Sure.”

I opened one of the jars and scooped out a bit of soy sauce.

The soy sauce had deepened in color. It looked much saltier than what we had taken out earlier.

“Mmm! It’s good.”

“Not too salty?”

“It is salty. But it’s supposed to be like that.”

After a quick taste test, we headed to the storage room.

Here, the completed sauces were being stored in their respective methods.

I had researched and figured it all out.

“These are doenjang, and those jars over there are soy sauce.”

Everything that had been scooped out was also stored in jars, all carefully dated and tasted daily.

I do a lot of work too, you know?

“Great, really great!”

Jae-seong cheered in excitement, clenching his fists.

Then he turned to me and said,

“Hyung, didn’t you say you made rice, too?”

“That’s right. I was going to show you. You should taste it.”

Cooking rice wouldn’t be a problem, it could be done quickly.

After taking a quick tour of the sauce storage, we headed to the rice storage.

There, we found a massive amount of rice, all preserved in slime fluid.

The look and feel might seem off-putting, but thanks to the slime fluid, the rice stayed as fresh as if it had just been milled.

No matter when we cooked it, the flavor of freshly milled rice would remain. Slimes really were incredible.

While Jae-seong checked the raw rice, I cooked enough for five people.

I didn’t need to cook so much, but it was my way of telling my brother to eat plenty after his long journey.

“The smell is amazing.”

“Last time, I brought it to Ara Hongryeon and cooked it in a pot. That was truly incredible. I don’t have that skill, though, so I’m just using the magic stone rice cooker.”

“Yeah, there’s definitely a skill to cooking rice. I’ve been learning lately, too.”

“I’m looking forward to it, little bro.”

The rice was done in about 15 minutes.

As I opened the rice cooker, a thick steam rose, accompanied by the unique aroma of freshly cooked rice.

“Wow, this is incredible.”

Even though I had experienced it several times, it still took my breath away.

Jae-seong stood there, speechless, admiring the perfectly cooked rice.

“Hyung.”

“Huh?”

“Have you ever thought about making mixed grain rice? Like rice with beans.”

“Nope. Rice should be plain white!”

“But your crops are special. You could make a five-grain rice or even grow glutinous rice later to make sticky rice.”

“Hmm…”

I hadn’t thought about it, but Jae-seong’s idea made sense.

Of course, mixed grain rice or bean rice can be divisive, but there are definitely people who enjoy them. And my crops rarely divide opinions.

I did have some leftover beans, which I had been feeding to Purr diligently, so I should try making some bean rice.

It would also be worth experimenting with adding other crops to the rice.

‘Potato rice? Sweet potato rice? I should try adding everything I can think of.’

It might taste better than expected.

No, maybe I could even create a new paradigm for rice dishes.

After all, my crops couldn’t possibly taste bad.

Of course, there’s a reason certain combinations exist, but you never know.

And don’t some households already make potato rice occasionally?

While I was lost in thought, I noticed Jae-seong had already finished eating all the rice.

What? When did he finish it all?

“This is revolutionary, hyung. In a country where rice is a staple, this rice could be worshipped like a god.”

Jae-seong was speaking casually, but tears were streaming down his face.

As much as I wanted to record his funny expression, I suppressed my laughter and nodded seriously.

“Yeah, Jae-seong. But before that, you’ve got work to do.”

“Work?”

“Actually, tomorrow we’re having a company dinner with all our staff.”

“Company? Staff? You mean Ara Hongryeon?”

“Where else would it be?”

Jae-seong’s expression became blank as he realized the nature of the task ahead.

“Did you know I was coming?”

“I didn’t know. You just happened to show up at the right time.”

“No way….”

Jae-seong, I take care of you as much as I can.

So, shouldn’t you help out too?

***

Meanwhile, in Japan.

Ino Junichi called for Shimomoto Orie.

“Chef, do you have any interest in going to Korea?”

“Korea? Chef Jae-seong is on vacation right now…”

“That’s right. But I heard a little rumor that Kyu-seong has grown some rice.”

“Let’s go immediately.”

Junichi had originally planned to leave with Jae-seong, but had to give up due to urgent business.

Fortunately, the matter was resolved sooner than expected.

Grateful for the unexpected free time, Junichi rose from his seat, thanking the heavens.

“Let’s take the private jet and leave right away! Ah, but first, contact Ara Hongryeon Guild in advance.”

China, Korea, Japan.

A historic moment where the three nations would come together.

In a dark room.

[Did you really say that?]

“Yes.”

In one of the secret locations scattered throughout the kingdom created by the Blue Moon, Hidan was reporting the recent events.

“It was a man with black hair and blue eyes.”

[Is that so?]

“Yes, although I remember his husky voice didn’t quite match his appearance.”

[Hmm-]

Yutia furrowed his brow as if contemplating the detailed description.

But only briefly.

[Don’t worry about that.]

With a simple command, Hidan responded.

“…Is that really okay?”

[Yes.]

Though reassured by Yutia’s affirmation, Hidan hesitated for a moment before lowering his head.

“I will obey the command of the Red Moon.”

The command was absolute.

However, that didn’t mean his curiosity faded, so after confirming the communication device was off, Hidan wondered:

…Who is that guy?

####

The next day.

“Thank you for bringing me this far.”

“It’s nothing, brother. It’s my duty.”

Upon reaching the forest located on the right side of Kimin’s territory, Alon patted Radan’s shoulder.

“Well, I’ll see you next time.”

“Yes, brother.”

“Oh, and please take care of things over there. They said they have business in Raksas.”

He then turned his gaze toward Penia and Felin.

Penia wore an awkward smile, while Felin stared at her with a strange expression.

This was where they were to part ways.

Unlike Alon, who no longer needed to stay in Raksas, the two had remaining matters to attend to there.

“Yes, since you’ve requested it, I will certainly do so.”

“Good.”

“Oh, but brother, may I ask you something?”

“What is it?”

“Hmm… I was just wondering if you needed anything.”

“Need anything?”

“Yes.”

At Radan’s question, Alon tilted his head before responding.

“No, I don’t.”

“You don’t…?”

“Why, is there a problem?”

“No, not exactly. It’s just that you’ve come all this way.”

At Radan’s words, Alon paused thoughtfully.

“No, there’s nothing I need. Seeing your face is enough. As I said, I wasn’t sure if we’d meet again.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, now I’ll be on my way. Take care.”

With that, he disembarked from the ship.

The ship soon departed again.

“He’s gone.”

“Yes, he has.”

Watching the ship grow smaller and smaller in the distance, Alon and Evan headed toward Kimin’s territory to find a carriage.

It was time to return to the Count of Palatio’s estate.

‘Star Eater.’

As he watched the slowly changing scenery outside the carriage, Alon recalled the conversation he had with the Observer yesterday.

‘Star Eater?’

‘Yes, do you know of it by any chance?’

‘Honestly, I don’t, but it’s quite an unsettling term.’

‘Is it? Why so?’

The Observer didn’t respond to Alon’s question.

Alon, too, didn’t press further.

He had already had enough discussions with her to understand that if she didn’t respond, it meant there was something unspeakable involved.

‘There’s so much obscure information, it’s ridiculous.’

Alon sighed.

Yet he wasn’t irritated by this fact.

After all, just recalling yesterday’s incident, when blood had flowed profusely from his nose, mouth, and eyes, reminded him—

‘It’s better than dying.’

Alon was someone who would rather live with lifelong curiosity than stick his neck out to uncover one truth of the world.

‘Of course, that doesn’t mean I intend to do nothing… maybe it’s more accurate to say that I can’t do nothing.’

He then remembered the words spoken by the entity he encountered when looking at the mirror yesterday.

“Execute the Deprived One… was it? It was definitely called an Outer God.”

He heard it clearly.

“Hiding… an Outer God, hiding…”

To him, these words could never be ignored.

The fact that an Outer God was hiding implied a great deal.

First, it meant that the Outer God was preparing something while remaining concealed.

Second, if the Outer God had managed to hide so successfully, it was almost as if it had fully manifested.

In other words, to Alon, it was like having a fully constructed bomb hidden somewhere, one that could explode at any moment.

“I have to handle this, no matter what.”

The problem was that there was no way to locate the hidden Outer God.

After pondering this for a while, Alon let out a long sigh and leaned back against the carriage seat.

Realizing that no immediate solution was forthcoming, he decided to rest for the moment and pause his thoughts.

How long had he been staring blankly out of the window?

Suddenly, Alon, who had been gazing into empty space, turned to Evan and asked,

“Evan.”

“Yes, Count?”

“I’m rather good-looking, aren’t I?”

“…Pardon?”

Evan, who was startled by this topic—one that had never been broached before—quickly collected himself and, after some consideration, answered,

“Well, of course, you are.”

“I thought so.”

“Did something happen?”

At Evan’s question, Alon recalled Penia’s behavior from the previous day.

Specifically, it was a voice he heard while on his way to greet Penia’s group, whom he had run into by chance on the roadside.

“Well… something like that.”

“Something like that?”

“Yes.”

Alon mumbled as he recalled the conversation he overheard when Penia had been hitting Felin.

“Ow! Ow! Sister!? Why suddenly!?”

“Like? Do I like him? Is that even a question!? Why would I like Count Palatio?!”

“No, I just thought you always seem so reserved when you’re around him…!”

“You idiot, I’ve always been reserved!”

“No, you weren’t always—”

“Stop spewing nonsense! Why on earth would I like him?! How did you even come to that conclusion?!”

“So, you don’t like him?”

“I have no reason to like him in the first place! Why would I like Count Palatio—”

The conversation was still vividly clear in his memory.

Of course, Alon had never once thought that Penia had feelings for him.

After all, there had never been any indication of that.

Therefore, even if Penia were to reject him, it would only be slightly awkward, and he wouldn’t harbor any negative feelings toward her.

But there was one reason that made him feel more uncomfortable about the situation.

“No matter how you look at it, she didn’t need to beat up her brother with such disgust.”

Alon wasn’t sure how Penia felt, but from his perspective, it looked like she was utterly repulsed.

And that, while hitting her brother for making such a remark.

“Well, I don’t know what’s going on, but don’t worry about it, Count. For men, it’s more about capability than appearance, right?”

“…That’s true.”

“Look at me. See how popular I am?”

Alon, having seen enough evidence to suggest otherwise, wanted to point out, “You’re not popular,” but he restrained himself and simply nodded.

“Yeah, I suppose so.”

“So, don’t let it bother you too much.”

At Evan’s words, Alon nodded again.

However, despite his nodding, he still felt a sense of melancholy.

It was autumn, the season of turning leaves.

####

Radan, who had unified all the Seven Archipelagos and essentially gained control of the eastern seas, sat in the office aboard his pirate ship, letting out a deep sigh.

He had become the ruler of all the Archipelagos and avenged his family’s death, but it wasn’t over yet.

He still had a mission left to complete.

He had to capture the “Black Fish.”

Lost in thought, Radan pulled out a small box from his coat pocket.

It was a gift Alon had recently given him before departing.

Radan, staring blankly at the box, soon opened it to check its contents.

“A monocle?”

The item inside was indeed a monocle, a single-lens eyeglass.

It wasn’t anything distinctive, just a common monocle one could find anywhere.

Still puzzled, Radan noticed a piece of paper inside the box and took it out.

“This will help reduce your perfectionism a bit.”

The note contained only a simple message.

However, Radan couldn’t help but be surprised by its content.

It was because, while people knew that Radan was somewhat meticulous, no one in the Blue Moon’s organization knew about his extreme perfectionism.

Radan himself had never shown it.

While one could guess it from the way he kept the territories under his control tidy, Alon couldn’t have prepared the gift with that in mind.

From the moment Alon arrived on the islands, he had been by Radan’s side.

Surprised, Radan put on the monocle, and for the first time, he felt his compulsive need to balance his field of vision decrease significantly, leaving him astonished once again.

“How does Brother know me so well?”

Radan couldn’t stop his growing curiosity as he thought of Alon, the one who had given him the gift.

After all, Alon— the Great Moon—had always been this way.

He knew that the captains of the Seven Archipelagos were the ones who had killed Radan’s parents.

He also knew a fact that Radan had never shared with anyone: his extreme perfectionism.

It was as if, just like Yutia always said, “He knows everything.”

That was what Radan found incredibly mysterious.

And that wasn’t all.

‘…I was sure Brother needed power.’

Radan was aware that this world was not so beautiful.

The world operates on give and take.

Where there is a departure, there is a return, and Radan understood this principle very well.

As a result, Radan felt trust and gratitude towards the Great Moon, but he also believed that Alon must want something in return.

Because in this world, there is no such thing as a favor without compensation.

However, no matter how he looked at Alon, Radan could not see any need for power.

That was true even when dealing with the Outer God.

Even when Alon leapt in without hesitation to rescue him from the Outer God’s grasp.

Unconsciously, Radan recalled that moment.

As the Great Moon tried to seal the pact, the greedy and indifferent eyes gazing at him from the depths of the sea suddenly became imprinted with fear.

The awe and chills he felt back then.

“…Whew.”

Radan let out a sigh.

From that moment, and from their last conversation today, Radan realized two things.

One was that Alon’s favor came without any demand for compensation.

The other was that he currently lacked the ability to repay that favor.

Because of that.

‘I need more power. In my current state, I can’t even stay by Brother’s side to support him.’

Radan made up his mind.

He decided to become strong enough to protect the Great Moon from nearby.

Suddenly, as he reached that point in his thoughts, he muttered,

“…Hypnosis magic… huh.”

He laughed at the foolish thoughts he had entertained not long ago.

He might not have known back then, but since meeting the Great Moon, he now realized just how foolish and naive his thinking had been.

Because of this.

“Everything is for the Great Moon.”

Radan quietly murmured to himself,

‘It seems it’s time to bring it out.’

He remembered an item buried in the depths of the sea and put on a resolute expression.

####

After spending about three weeks in the carriage, Alon finally returned to the Palatio estate and took a very relaxed rest that night.

Though he had spent years traveling here and there by carriage and should have been used to it by now, sleeping in a carriage was still extremely exhausting for him.

So, after arriving at the estate and indulging in a deep rest, the next day, Alon received a call from Duke Altia for the first time in a while.

[…Impressive, as expected. We were preparing too, but we couldn’t find the right moment to make a move. But to deal with over eight nobles at once…]

[…?]

[I thought you weren’t paying much attention to this matter, so I was really surprised.]

For some reason, Alon was mistakenly being regarded as the mastermind who had killed eight nobles without batting an eye.

‘What is this about now…’

Alon muttered a low sigh.
