Leetanka, an F-rank fighter participating in this battle royale, honestly thought he might be able to take down Count Palatio.

Of course, this wasn’t because he underestimated Alon’s strength.

No matter how much Alon might be ignorant of the ways of the world, it made no sense to dismiss the already infamous Count Palatio.

The reason he thought this was simple—because the Count was a magician.

Essentially, magicians needed time to cast spells.

The higher the rank of the spell, the shorter the casting time, but there was always a slight delay.

And in this confined arena, Leetanka knew that this delay would give fighters enough time to strike.

That’s why, despite his tension, he believed he had a chance.

After confirming that Count Palatio was part of this battle royale, Leetanka gathered all the other fighters, confident they could take him down together.

However, Leetanka’s arrogance was quickly shattered the moment Alon’s magic unfolded.

“What the… this is insane—”

He couldn’t help but let out an exclamation as he stared blankly upward.

Dozens of ice pillars were entangled, forming a small mountain.

At the peak of that mountain, the man stood, gazing down at the fighters with no emotion, just cold indifference.

While all the fighters held their weapons, paralyzed and unsure of what to do, overwhelmed by the sight, Alon exhaled a frosty breath amidst the chilling cold, watching them.

‘So far, everything is going according to plan,’ Alon thought as he formed a hand seal.

In truth, before entering today’s battle royale, Alon had agonized over which magic to use.

He was used to fighting stronger opponents, so most of his spells targeted individuals rather than groups.

Knowing he could only cast magic six times, he foresaw this situation and, after much deliberation, settled on his strategy.

‘What I need here is magic that can cover the widest range with enough power to take down F-rank fighters.’

With that conclusion, he arranged his spells.

Wong—!

“Enhance.”

Soon, a shield formed in the center of the massive iceberg Alon had created.

“Compress.”

Following his command, the center of the enormous iceberg compressed into the shape of a large dome.

The center of the mountain instantly transformed into a spherical shape, making the structure look unstable.

The spectators silently gasped in awe at the sight.

The enormous sphere floating at the heart of the iceberg, on the verge of collapse, looked like a magical work of art.

But then.

“Vacuum.”

As soon as Alon spoke again, the shield, which had just been compressed into what looked like a sphere of magical energy, shrank even further.

“Return to the Primordial.”

With Alon’s final words,

Boooom!!!

The iceberg exploded, sweeping away the fighters gathered around it.

The fragile snow-capped mountain crumbled with a deafening roar.

White dust rose into the air.

And when the white cloud settled, what remained on the battlefield was…

Alon. Alone.

The silence that followed lasted only a moment.

[Ah, ahem! The winner of the battle royale is Alon Palatio!!!!!]

The commentator, who had been flustered, quickly regained his composure and announced the result.

In his ears, the sound of thunderous cheers began to echo.

Alon thought to himself.

‘If it hadn’t ended in one shot, it could have been dangerous.’

He felt the mana hole within him empty, having used more magical power than expected due to the large range of the spell, and broke into a small cold sweat.

‘Looks like I’ll need to practice adjusting the spell arrangement more.’

One more task had been added to his to-do list.

***

Right after the battle royale ended, Alon, who had instantly been promoted from an F-rank fighter to a D-rank fighter eligible to issue challenges, was thinking about which C-rank fighter he would challenge next.

“Count.”

“What is it, Evan?”

“…Yutia sent a gift.”

“A gift?”

“Yes.”

Upon hearing this from Evan, who had been waiting at the guild, Alon quickly made his way to his room and saw a staff placed on the desk.

It was the Sparrow Staff he had been trying to acquire.

“She sent this as a gift?”

“Yes. She said you’d like it.”

Evan’s words left Alon perplexed as he examined the staff. Even after inspecting it, he confirmed it was indeed the Sparrow Staff.

‘…What is this?’

His expression turned blank.

It was no wonder. From what he knew, access to the Colony’s treasure vault required one to prove their qualifications as a fighter.

The Colony’s royal family had upheld this tradition since they established the kingdom, so Alon never even considered buying items from the treasure vault with money, knowing it was impossible.

Which led him to wonder.

‘How did she manage this?’

Though curious about how Yutia had acquired the Sparrow Staff for him, Alon set the question aside for now, deciding to feel grateful toward her.

Thanks to her, he had obtained the item he had originally intended to acquire.

‘Since I’ve exhausted my mana today, I won’t be able to use it. I’ll give it a try tomorrow.’

Feeling as if he had received a gift from a well-raised daughter, Alon gripped the Sparrow Staff in his hand.

The next day.

As Alon infused mana into the staff, just as “it” had described,

[…Huh? Who are you? Why are you waking me up?]

A gruff middle-aged man’s voice, full of irritation at the world, echoed in his mind.

“I am Alon Palatio.”

[So what?]

“I was introduced by the Dragonkin.”

[So what?]

“…”

Alon felt a sudden headache, instinctively sensing that the conversation would be difficult, but pressed on.

“You don’t seem to like long conversations, so I’ll get straight to the point. I heard you’re a mage.”

[…Looks like there’s still at least one idiot left in this world of morons.]

“…I was told by the Dragonkin that you’d reveal your glyphs and phrases to me. Can you do that?”

[What good would knowing that do you?]

“I plan to use them.”

At Alon’s answer, the voice inside the staff let out a deep sigh after a brief silence.

[I thought you were at least a fool with some knowledge, but it turns out you’re just a complete idiot.]

The middle-aged voice continued, filled with blatant disdain.

[Hey, idiot, do you really think knowing my glyphs and phrases means you’ll be able to use them?]

“If I couldn’t use them, I wouldn’t have asked. The Dragonkin said you’d explain everything clearly.”

[Stop talking about things you’ll never be able to do. You haven’t even inherited my mental image, so how could you possibly use my glyphs?]

The voice in the staff spat out words laced with denial, as if dismissing the entire conversation.

Just as Alon fell silent, pondering the situation.

“Count!”

Suddenly, Evan burst through the door.

“What is it?”

“You’ve received a challenge request.”

“From whom?”

“From an A-rank fighter. The name is… ‘Philcion.’”

The Colosseum came to deliver the message. How should I respond?”

At Evan’s question, Alon briefly considered it with some confusion.

‘An A-rank fighter, challenging me? …It’s not impossible, but…’

D-rank fighters were allowed to challenge fighters ranked one tier above them, but A-rank fighters could issue challenges to lower-ranked fighters as they wished.

However, it was uncommon for A-rank fighters to challenge lower-ranked fighters. If they didn’t fight against others of their own rank, they risked their standing, and if they lost, they would be demoted. The risk was too great.

But for Alon, this was an opportunity to rise to the A-rank in one swift move without having to fight several battles.

After a brief pause, Alon made his decision.

“If you don’t believe me, why don’t we make a bet?”

[…Huh?]

Alon smiled at the staff.

***

One day later.

Philcion, the A-rank fighter who had issued the challenge to Count Palatio, walked out from the opposite side of the Colosseum’s arena, eyeing the man entering the battlefield.

‘As expected.’

Count Palatio, stepping into the arena amidst thunderous cheers, caught Philcion’s gaze.

Philcion smirked to himself.

In truth, this wasn’t a good match for him.

As an A-rank fighter, beating Count Palatio, a D-rank fighter, wouldn’t bring Philcion any glory, and if he lost, he would be demoted from A-rank to D-rank.

But despite that, there was one reason Philcion had issued the challenge to Count Palatio.

To generate buzz.

It was true that Count Palatio, standing before him, was a D-rank fighter, but his strength had already been proven multiple times through rumors.

Moreover, his power was definitively confirmed during the recent battle royale, making him even more famous within the Colony.

In other words, what Philcion wanted was to defeat Alon and steal the spotlight from him.

He had heard rumors that the vacant position of Baba Yaga would soon be filled by one of the A-rank fighters, chosen by the royal family.

In short, for Philcion, whose goal was to become the next Baba Yaga, this event was a rare opportunity he could not afford to miss. That’s why he took the gamble, though he was confident he could defeat the Count.

Of course, Philcion wasn’t underestimating Count Palatio.

As mentioned, there were many rumors about his strength, and he had already proven his power in the Colosseum.

Ignoring Count Palatio would be a foolish act, something no fighter should ever do.

Especially not fighters.

However, there was one reason Philcion was confident.

‘Count Palatio only uses ice magic.’

Of course, he knew that magicians could use other spells aside from their primary magic.

But he also knew that if it wasn’t their specialty, the power of those spells would be significantly weaker.

Moreover, before sending the challenge, Philcion had thoroughly investigated and confirmed that Alon only used ice magic, which further boosted his confidence.

And with good reason.

Smirk

His race, the Flameclan, was inherently capable of wielding fire, an element with a strong advantage over ice magic.

No matter how powerful Alon’s ice magic was, it would naturally weaken in the face of the high-temperature flames Philcion controlled, which brought a smile to his face.

[And now, let the match begin!]

As soon as the commentator’s voice fell, Philcion unleashed his flames.

Whoosh!

The fire surged, making the already hot ground boil even more, drawing gasps from the audience.

At the same time, the cold began to rise from around Alon, threatening to engulf the arena.

But.

“Humph—”

Unfortunately, Alon’s frost could not reach where Philcion stood.

‘As I thought!’

Philcion twisted his lips into a grin and drew his twin swords.

‘How should I finish this? In one strike? Or should I wait for the Count to cast a spell and then finish him? No, I can’t drag this out for too long. Better to make it as impactful as possible.’

Philcion, already thinking as though he had won.

But, unfortunately for him, his blissful thoughts were cut short.

“Array of Thunder.”

The moment Alon uttered a new incantation, it was over.

Crackle!

Brilliant blue sparks began to surround Alon’s body, clearly visible to everyone.

Round 197

Prev | TOC | Next

I momentarily froze as I stared at the fruit with an incredible, unexpected effect.

Meanwhile, Ras and Ara were happily sharing and eating the fruit together.

– “There isn’t much of it. It’s a rare fruit.”

“It’s delicious. Hehe.”

Just as Ras said, looking around, it became clear that this plant, called Rapipi, wasn’t abundant.

Curiosity sparked, and I asked Ras.

“If it’s such a rare fruit, how do you get food for that snake?”

– “Once this plant grows a bit, it immediately hides underground. Before that, it bears fruit, and after that, it becomes a huge root.”

“Oh, I see.”

What a fascinating plant.

“Would it be okay if I took a look at the roots as well?”

– “The roots aren’t tasty. They’re also hard to eat.”

“Really? So, it’s only used as food for the snake?”

I packed a few of the remaining fruits into my backpack.

Inside the fruit, there were seeds, and I could probably sprout and grow those seeds.

I felt like I had stumbled upon a good item in an unexpected place.

For a while, we ate the Rapipi fruit while observing the small ecosystem inside the cave.

After confirming that the ancient snake had fallen into a deep sleep, we headed back to the village.

“Keng! Keng!”

“Kiying.”

As soon as we returned to the village, we were greeted by the Gnolls.

It was amazing to think that these little creatures prepared such massive food for the ancient snake every time.

“Ras.”

– “You called?”

“So, what do you guys eat?”

– “The small ecosystem created by the snake becomes our food. We hunt small animals, gather fruit, and sometimes eat the leftovers from the snake.”

“Oh…”

It seemed like they were short on food.

Ara, with wide eyes, asked Ras, as if she was thinking the same thing.

“Is that really enough? It seems like so little!”

– “Well, it’s not much, but if we ration it, we can manage.”

It didn’t seem fine at all.

I couldn’t imagine Ras alone being able to provide enough food for all the Gnolls.

The only way they could gather food was from the small ecosystem created by the snake’s leftovers inside the cave, as Ras mentioned earlier.

Of course, Ras could probably go outside and hunt monsters to gather food.

‘But there must be a reason they don’t do that.’

When I thought about it, it seemed dangerous.

Ras? No, the Gnolls.

Even if Ras went out hunting, there was a risk that their village could be discovered.

And if they were attacked while Ras was away on the next hunt, the Gnolls would be wiped out.

There was a reason Ras was living quietly in seclusion here.

“Ras!”

– “Hmm?”

“Move to my house!”

– “Me? Move?”

Ras tilted his head, puzzled by my sudden suggestion.

I turned to Ara, who had chimed in at just the right moment, giving her a thumbs-up in agreement.

“Didn’t I mention that I have the power of teleportation? First, why don’t you take a look at my house?”

– “Right now?”

But there was a catch.

My dungeon ability could only be used by me and my familiars.

In other words, Ras and the Gnolls would have to become my familiars for it to work.

“Hehe”

I was plotting another sneaky plan, but first, I decided to give them a little taste.

I couldn’t just suddenly ask them to become my familiars, so I needed to let them experience it first.

“Wait a moment.”

I immediately used the power of the Master of Gluttony on a nearby door. Then, I said to Ara,

“I’ll bring Bokkeum and Mammon. Just wait a little.”

“Okay!”

Without delay, I entered.

Ras and the Gnolls watched me with curious eyes.

Soon, the scenery changed as I entered the dungeon of gluttony.

Woof!

“Hey, Woofy! To the village!”

The Master of Gluttony’s cooldown was 24 hours.

It seemed like I would have to spend the day in the Dungeon of Wrath.

During this time, I would tempt Ras and the Gnolls and then abduct, no, move them all!

“Hehehe.”

Upon arriving at the village, I immediately fetched Bokkeum.

Unlike Ara, who was registered as a familiar with the government, the others couldn’t board the plane, so I had no choice but to leave them in the dungeon, but everything was prepared.

“Bokkeum, you’ve been waiting, right? Let’s go.”

Inside Bokkeum was everything I had prepped, from supplies to food.

All I had to do was take Bokkeum, and that would be enough!

Then, I quickly ran to the Goblin village and called for Mammon.

“Mammon!”

– “Ah, my lord! How did your errand go?”

“Come with me. Ras and Ara are waiting outside.”

– “It’s been a while since I’ve seen Ras!”

With Mammon on board, I headed back to the dungeon entrance. Did I forget anything?

Honestly, as long as I had Bokkeum, I had everything I needed, so I left without worry.

– “Oh, you’re back quickly.”

– “That voice… Ras?”

– “Mammon! Is that you?!”

Mammon jumped off the back of the dog and ran toward Ras.

Ras welcomed Mammon with open arms.

– “Haha! How long has it been, my friend?”

– “You haven’t changed a bit.”

Mammon seemed a bit awkward as he studied Ras. Ara, seeing this, couldn’t hold back and hugged both of them at once.

“Hehe, this is great! The three of us are together again.”

– “I’m happy too! How long has it been since I’ve seen my friends?”

– “I… I can’t breathe.”

Watching them made my heart feel warm.

Honestly, it had been a long time since they’d seen each other, but they must have been close even before.

“Were you close with the other Seven Deadly Sins as well?”

– “Some of them, yes. Others, not so much. Oh! Ara was friends with all of them.”

“I like everyone!”

Ara’s cheerful personality must have been there from the start.

While listening to their reunion chat, I began to make preparations.

My secret weapon to tempt Ras and the Gnolls: my cooking!

“Bokkeum.”

First, I took out the kitchen tools.

From the mini stove powered by magic stones to knives, pots, and cutting boards.

Next came the ingredients.

Since I figured the Gnolls would like meat, I especially prepared various kinds this time.

Beef, pork, chicken, and even monster meat and fish caught at the beach.

I had everything meticulously prepared.

I also brought spices and crops, all prepped and ready.

To be honest, all I had to do was stir-fry, grill, and boil, as I had already done all the preparations.

‘Let’s start with soup.’

I poured water and turned on the fire.

I added some ingredients and waited for it to boil, then moved on to stir-frying.

Since there were many mouths to feed, I always carried several portable stoves, allowing me to cook multiple dishes at once.

The dishes started coming together quickly.

Since most of the cooking time is spent prepping ingredients, having everything ready made it easy to finish the dishes in no time.

“Ta-da.”

“Wow!”

The kids, who had been gathering to watch the cooking, cheered. Even the Gnolls from the village came running.

First, I grilled the beef as is.

I made it into a steak, paired with carrots and potatoes, and that was it.

For the pork, I made ginger-grilled pork and mixed it with vegetables to finish the dish.

Honestly, it would be perfect with white rice, but let’s look forward to the soon-to-be-harvested rice.

Not only that, but I also made braised chicken in soy sauce and stir-fried chicken, as well as kimchi stew with the remaining pork.

I even made beef and radish soup using the beef.

“Busy, busy!”

After placing the finished dishes on the table, I continued to work hard on the remaining ones.

There were dishes made from monster meat and fresh seafood!

Slurp.

“Gulp.”

Hearing the kids swallow their saliva, I suddenly remembered something.

“You can start eating first!”

“Are we eating together too?”

“I’ll eat slowly. You go ahead.”

I refocused on cooking.

Even though it was monster meat, it looked no different from beef or pork, so I cooked it lightly.

Grilling, steaming, and braising!

The braised dish took a little longer, but I managed to make something similar to Dongpo pork in no time.

As for the seafood, I either grilled it or made it into a soup.

While raw or sashimi could work, since this was the first time the Gnolls were eating seafood, I decided to go with a more universally liked cooking method.

“Alright, all the cooking is done. Huh?”

As I carried plates and bowls filled with food, I noticed that the other dishes remained untouched.

Just then, Ara bounced over and grabbed the dish I was holding.

“What? You haven’t eaten yet?”

“We’re eating together.”

Ara pouted as if she was sulking, making me want to pinch her cheeks.

– “How could we eat before the Great Lord finished working?”

– “I am being served, so I cannot start eating first. Hmph!”

These little guys—what are they saying?

So cute.

I couldn’t help but smile.

“Alright. Since it’s come to this, let’s eat together. There’s plenty for everyone.”

Considering Ara’s appetite and estimating that the number of Gnolls was about the same as the goblins, I had prepared enough ingredients.

However, there were fewer Gnolls than goblins, so there was more than enough food.

“Let’s eat!”

“Thank you for the food!”

– “Thank you, Great Lord!”

– “Mmm, this looks delicious.”

Ara and Mammon comfortably picked out the food that suited their tastes.

Korean, Western, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine—all were present, albeit not perfectly, so they could choose what they liked. Haha.

However, Ras and the Gnolls looked overwhelmed by the sheer number of dishes.

“I’ll serve you.”

I portioned out food for the kids to make it easier for them to eat.

I served Ras first, then the others.

In hindsight, I wondered if I should have done a buffet-style serving, but once they got used to it, they’d be able to help themselves.

– “Chomp. Huh?!! Whoa?!”

Ras, tasting the food for the first time, widened his eyes in surprise.

He was so shocked by the taste that his expression was one of disbelief.

His already large, shiny eyes grew even bigger.

The other Gnolls had similar reactions.

All of them were astonished by the flavors and scents, quickly devouring the food.

“Hehe.”

For once, Ara stopped eating to watch Ras and the Gnolls.

She seemed satisfied just from their reactions.

– “As expected, the Great Lord’s food is the best in the world! I can’t believe it tastes even better every time!”

“If I let my little brother cook for you, you might not say that. When he comes, I’ll pick some goblins who want to learn to cook and have him teach them.”

– “There are already a few of my subordinates who love cooking! It would be a great honor, Great Lord!”

Now, I think I’ll start eating too.

The steak was huge.

I sliced it and took a bite, and the juices exploded in my mouth.

“Mmm!”

Dipping it into the vegetable sauce I made, the flavor was indescribable.

Next, I tried the dish similar to Dongpo pork.

Although it’s not a dish you can make this quickly, the monster meat made it tender and melt in my mouth.

‘It’s melting.’

The fat of the meat melted at body temperature.

The rich flavor of the meat mixed with the slightly sweet soy sauce, dancing in my mouth.

When the taste became a bit heavy, I took a sip of the kimchi stew or the refreshing beef and radish soup.

The kimchi stew and soup didn’t contain much of my crops, but I made them just because I wanted to, and I’m glad I did.

“Ahhh.”

“Kyaa!”

– “Phew.”

– “Nom nom nom.”

Everyone was enjoying the food in their own way.

Especially Ras, who was completely lost in the food, devouring it with his eyes practically rolled back.

Hehe.

How is it? Doesn’t this make you want to move in?

Round 196

Prev | TOC | Next

Ras, full of confidence, led the way.

Ara and I followed closely behind him.

“Once again, be cautious. It’s extremely dangerous here. I need to focus on the task, so Ara, make sure to stay by your father’s side.”

“Got it! I’ll protect him no matter what!”

“Are we really okay to follow?”

I felt a little uneasy and gripped the sweet potatoes I had prepared earlier tightly. The ability of the sweet potatoes was to grant invincibility for 0.5 seconds, an upgrade from 0.3 seconds after its level increased.

We left the others behind and climbed up by ourselves.

Finally, as we reached the surface and tore down the false wall, we heard a noise from inside the cave.

-Grrr.

A sound from something unknown, but its size was unmistakably large.

It was so close, like it was growling right next to our ears.

I wondered if following Ras was the right decision and glanced back. The gatekeeper trolls were already busy sealing the wall behind us, giving us a thumbs-up with a grin, signaling us to go ahead safely.

In the end, I followed closely behind Ara.

Whoosh~!

A river of lava flowed through the cave, lighting our way. Thankfully, I couldn’t feel the heat, thanks to Tiger King full armor.

-Grrr.

The further we ventured, the louder the sound grew.

As the monster’s presence loomed closer, I tensed up. Ara looked back at me and gently squeezed my hand.

“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you, Kyu-seong.”

“Oh? Uh, thanks.”

Her tightly pursed lips and determined eyes made her look so cute that my tension began to ease. I found myself admiring her round face.

Rumble.

There was a sound of something moving.

I shifted my gaze and saw a black shadow stirring.

‘What is that?!’

At first, I couldn’t believe my eyes, but I soon realized it was a massive body.

Initially, I thought the cave itself was moving, but that wasn’t the case.

Rumble.

It was a massive wall.

A moving wall!

“Wow.”

Even Ara let out a gasp of amazement at the size of it.

The monster was so enormous that we couldn’t see its full shape. The feeling I had was similar to when I first saw the World Tree up close.

“Is it a snake?”

Judging by its movements, it seemed like a colossal snake. No, with a size like that, it had to be the dungeon’s boss, right?

Ras, who had waited for us to absorb the sight, shot us a look that said, “Are you done?” before continuing forward.

His nonchalant demeanor reminded me once again that Ras was the furious boss here.

Even such a massive monster was weaker than Ras’s Wrath, I guessed.

Thud.

The giant monster stopped after moving a bit.

Then, we saw its body pulsating.

-It’s feeding.

Ras assessed the situation naturally. He had seen this many times before.

He resumed walking toward where we assumed the creature’s head was. He moved at such a brisk pace that I had to jog to keep up.

The cave was much larger than I had expected, though it made sense given the monster’s size.

Squirm.

“I wonder what it’s eating.”

Before I knew it, the initial tension had completely disappeared, and curiosity took over.

That reminded me of something I had forgotten, and I immediately pulled something out of my backpack.

It was carrot juice.

Gulp, gulp.

Ara looked at me with envy, but she knew why I was drinking it, so she didn’t beg for any.

Feeling the item’s effects activate, I handed the remaining carrot juice to Ara and checked the information on the monster.

‘What are you…!?’

[Ancient Serpent Guarding the Seal of Wrath, LV.9]

[A serpent that has lived for ages and gained spiritual energy. ]

[It primarily feeds on ??? eggs or ??? fruits.]

[It has a dull personality and is lazy.]

[With a powerful orb of fire, it may ascend to a dragon?]

Gasp!

[It was a monster of level 9.]

Level 9, which meant it was equivalent to a grade 9 rank, a realm no awakened one had ever reached.

Moreover, a monster’s strength wasn’t always equal to that of an awakened one at the same rank. It depended on whether the monster moved in a pack, or whether it was a giant one like this, or a boss-type monster, making its strength vary greatly.

‘But what’s even more intriguing…’

Its name seemed to be connected to Wrath. But a seal of Wrath?

Thump, thump.

It was walking around just fine though. Could that thing really be sealed?

I couldn’t help but be curious. I looked at Ras, the little dog, and spoke.

“Ras.”

-Mm?

“When I checked this serpent’s name, it said it’s guarding the Seal of Wrath. Are you sealed right now?”

-Me, sealed? What nonsense is that? I am perfectly fine.

Ras suddenly stopped and spread his arms wide, his stance ridiculously dramatic—in an adorable way.

-Also, I had no idea this wriggling creature had such a name.

“Really? Sorry if that bothered you.”

From Ras’s point of view, it would be weird to have a name suggesting he was sealed, when he wasn’t. But instead of being upset by my apology, Ras smiled with satisfaction.

-No, I actually feel quite pleased. The “Ancient Serpent Guarding the Seal of Wrath”! What a splendid name! Ha ha!

He had a personality that would fit right in with Hyun-woo and Ryu Wang-jin.

As we walked further, we began to see the serpent becoming more animated.

We seemed to be approaching its head.

-We’re almost there.

Ras pointed ahead with his finger.

Looking where he indicated, I saw something wriggling—likely its head.

‘Wow, it’s really huge.’

I didn’t even know how to describe it. The head of the enormous serpent looked more like a mountain of rock than a living creature. But since that mountain was moving, it caused a sense of dissonance.

Gulp, gulp!

It seemed to be eating something. Upon closer inspection, there were giant lumps I couldn’t identify.

Curious, I looked closer, and Ras explained.

-My subordinates gather those every day and prepare them before the creature wakes up. They’re special fruits that only come from the underground.

“Fruits, huh?”

Whatever those fruits were, they were enormous. Thanks to them, the ancient serpent, despite its size, appeared to be eating to its heart’s content.

I was amazed at how the trolls always prepared such massive fruits ahead of time.

“Do they prepare the fruits to make it fall asleep?”

-Exactly.

It seemed like the meal was almost over. Ras must have felt the same, as he stretched and then spoke to Ara.

-Just in case, make sure to protect your father well.

“Got it!”

Ras moved.

With quick and agile movements that matched his small frame, he darted forward in the blink of an eye, soon reaching the front and climbing up the serpent’s body.

Wriggle, wriggle.

The serpent, either too absorbed in eating or too sluggish due to its massive size, didn’t seem to notice at all.

Thanks to that, Ara and I could only watch in a daze as Ras hopped up the serpent’s body.

Before long, Ras reached the top.

The serpent, having swallowed all the fruits, seemed to be digesting them quietly.

-Grrrrr.

Soon after, a noise, like an engine starting, began to emanate from the serpent.

-Roaaaar!!

Ugh, it felt like my ears were about to burst.

Ara hurriedly covered her ears with both hands and shouted something, but I couldn’t hear a word.

At that moment…

Boom!!!

A thunderous sound, loud enough to rival the serpent’s roar, erupted.

Looking closely, it seemed Ras had struck the serpent’s head. With just one hit, the ancient serpent’s eyes turned into X’s, and its tongue lolled out as it collapsed unconscious.

“Wow! Ras is really strong!”

Even though I saw it with my own eyes, I couldn’t believe the strength I had just witnessed. Without any special abilities, his brute force alone seemed like a unique power.

But wait, wasn’t this supposed to be the ancient serpent guarding the Seal of Wrath? Why did it feel like the roles were reversed? It was almost as if the serpent represented Wrath and Ras was the one guarding the seal. Who was guarding whose seal?

Thump, thump!

Ras jumped back down from the serpent’s head and spoke nonchalantly.

-It should be quiet again for a while.

“For how long?”

-Hmm, about a week? I’ll need to gather more fruits before then and leave them here.

A week?

It seemed like they did this more frequently than I thought.

I imagined the trolls must have had quite a tough job, and just as I was wondering if we were heading back, Ras walked over to the serpent’s mouth.

“Ras?”

-I need to move this thing a bit.

???

Move what? The serpent?

You, moving this colossal creature that stretches out endlessly?

-Hup!

Rumble, rumble, rumble!

Once again, an unbelievable scene unfolded before my eyes. As Ras pushed the serpent’s lower jaw, the massive body started to slowly shift backward.

-Normally, I would pull it by the tail, but that’s too much of a hassle.

Even while pushing, Ras casually explained.

This… this was more than just brute strength!

Eventually, after awkwardly shifting the serpent to one side, Ras returned, looking as calm as ever.

-What do you think? Impressive, isn’t it?

It seemed Ras was more excited to show off the gigantic serpent than his own strength.

“Uh, yeah… It’s huge.”

“It’s thiiiiiiis big!” Ara added.

-You don’t often see something this large. Oh! Gula—no, Ara, weren’t you this big back in the day?

“Was I?”

Wait, what? Our little Ara used to be that big?

If a slime of that size existed, even as a lower-ranked monster, it could cause a world-ending catastrophe.

-Ara’s father.

“Yes?”

-The reason I suggested you come here wasn’t just to show you this giant creature. There’s another reason. Follow me.

Ras’s confident steps left Ara and me tilting our heads in confusion, but we followed him.

The place he led us to was where the ancient serpent had been eating the fruits, and something was left behind.

“This is…”

In the area where the serpent had fed, a small ecosystem had formed. Tiny creatures were living off the leftovers from the serpent’s meal.

Insects and small plants and animals were busily scurrying about.

-This is the reason I leave the serpent as it is, said Ras.

He then plucked an oddly shaped plant. It had an orange fruit hanging like a little droplet, which was quite striking.

-It’s the same plant that serpent was eating.

“It’s this small?”

-The big part is the root. This is just the fruit.

It’s like a survival crop, similar to potatoes or sweet potatoes, where the root grows large.

But can you eat the fruit as well?

‘Compared to those massive roots, this seems so unbalanced.’

The root was as big as a house, yet the plant growing above the ground was so tiny. Maybe it didn’t need much light for photosynthesis, given the lack of sunlight. The stem, leaves, and fruit were barely the size of a dandelion.

“Is this your food supply?”

-No, it’s just a snack. How about trying some? Consider it a reward for giving me that delicious dog chew.

Ara and I each took a fruit and tried it.

‘Hmm?!’

It was delicious!

How to describe it? It was sweet and tangy, but the sweetness was far stronger. The sugar content was so high that it made my mouth feel happy.

Just in case, I checked if an item window would appear.

‘It’s here!’

[Rapipi LV.1]

“What… is this?”

Milanon, a noble of the colony and a member of the Count of Philmaria’s family, couldn’t grasp the current situation at all—from start to finish. First of all, he didn’t understand why Seolrang, the first Baba Yaga of the colony, had slaughtered all his private soldiers and grabbed his head as if it was about to explode, just for mocking a nobleman walking around with a bewildered expression.

He also couldn’t understand why Yutia Bludia, one of the cardinals of the Holy Kingdom of Rosario and known to have the strongest influence lately, suddenly stepped out of the carriage and held hands with the very noble he had mocked. Everything was a mystery.

However…

“Isn’t that Count Palatio?”

“Seems like it, huh?”

“He’s with a Baba Yaga, so it must be him.”

Milanon, hearing the whispers of the citizens, finally realized why Seolrang had grabbed his head. The rumor that Seolrang, the Baba Yaga of the colony, followed Count Palatio, a noble of the Kingdom of Asteria, as her Master, had spread quite widely since about a year ago.

Still, there were things he couldn’t comprehend. ‘Lord? She calls him Lord…?’

Milanon had heard rumors about Count Palatio. He knew Seolrang referred to him as Master and that Deus Macallian, the Master Knight of the nation of Caliban, called him Benefactor. He was also aware of his close relationship with a high-ranking member of the Labyrinth City’s council. But…

‘He’s close with a cardinal from the Holy Kingdom as well?’

Milanon stared at Alon and Yutia with a dumbfounded expression. Unlike Alon, who remained expressionless, Yutia, standing across from him, seemed to be filled with warm feelings. Feelings so full of warmth that even if Milanon had truly been mistreated in this situation, there was no way she would take his side.

‘What on earth is his true identity…?’

As that astonished curiosity filled Milanon, he heard Alon’s voice: “Seolrang, stop.”

With that, Milanon was finally released.

“Grr…”

Milanon clutched his head in pain, feeling as if it would split open. Alon approached him.

“Are you alright? My apologies.”

The apology was simple and straightforward. Milanon instinctively tried to open his mouth. He knew that mocking a fellow noble like Count Palatio was something he should not have done. But still, the response had been excessively harsh. And there were several witnesses to it.

Of course, since Milanon had used his soldiers to block access and keep the area to himself, no one viewed him favorably. In fact, many seemed to find satisfaction in Seolrang’s actions.

“Still, though~”

Milanon, who had gained some justification with Alon’s apology, was about to say something, but he quickly shut his mouth. He couldn’t help it, because both Seolrang and Yutia, standing behind Count Palatio, were staring straight at him. Their red and golden eyes glinting as if they wouldn’t miss a single move.

Staring intently.

And so…

“N-no, it’s nothing.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. I-I’m fine… really, fine…!”

With that, Milanon frantically waved his hands and quickly fled the scene.

***

Shortly after the noble, whose identity Alon hadn’t even bothered to confirm, fled in a panic…

After the initial surprise of the sudden meeting, they moved to Seolrang’s guild to avoid attention. Finally, Alon could speak comfortably with Yutia.

“You said you came to the colony for some business?”

“Yes. So, I won’t be staying long.”

Alon nodded at Yutia’s bright smile, yet his expression turned somewhat pensive. Her smile was so kind, so saintly, that it was almost fitting to call her a saint. But there was a strange disconnect with how he remembered her.

‘Maybe it’s because I only saw her as one of the Five Great Sins in Psychedelia, but she feels very different now.’

Alon suddenly realized that although they had exchanged letters frequently, this was his first time seeing her in person. A sense of pride filled him. Yutia had grown up well. Particularly with the destructive image of her as one of the Five Great Sins still vividly imprinted in his mind, the pride he felt towards her was even greater than for others.

Looking around the room, Alon spoke up again.

“But… are you two not on good terms?”

The reason for his question was that Seolrang, who was always cheerful, had been looking unusually tense ever since Yutia arrived. But Yutia, without losing her smile, replied, “Oh, not at all. Seolrang and I are on very good terms, right?”

“Right,” Seolrang nodded.

However, despite their words, the atmosphere between them felt somewhat awkward. Alon tilted his head in mild confusion but then shrugged, deciding not to pry further since they both insisted they were close.

Then, out of nowhere, Seolrang asked, “Master, in two years, you’ll think about it, right?”

The sudden question left Alon momentarily confused until he realized she was referring to the marriage registration. He fumbled his response, “Well… I’ll think about it when the time comes.”

“What are you going to think about?” Yutia asked curiously.

Alon hesitated, wondering how to explain the situation, but before he could say anything, Seolrang boldly announced, “He said he’ll seriously consider marrying me in two years!”

Alon, taken aback, let out a surprised sound, “Ah—”

“Huh?” Yutia, equally shocked, voiced her confusion.

Seolrang, on the other hand, looked more triumphant than ever, as if she had never been upset in the first place.

Yutia, who had been staring blankly at Seolrang for a moment, suddenly burst into a soft laugh, “Pfft—”

“?”

Then, with a serene expression, she looked at Alon. “You don’t need to explain, Lord. I’m sure Seolrang made an unreasonable request, and you had no choice but to answer that way, right?”

Even though Alon hadn’t provided any explanation, Yutia seemed to understand everything perfectly, as if she were already wise beyond her years. Alon couldn’t help but smile inwardly. Anyone could see that she embodied the role of a nurturing older sister.

Just as Alon was about to nod in satisfaction, Yutia continued, “Yes, that must be it. Since Seolrang is a bit immature, you probably had to comfort her by promising something in two years, knowing that rejecting her outright would have made her incredibly sad. I know you only said that because you had no choice. Although lying isn’t good, sometimes there are lies that have to be told, right?”

“…??”

Alon was left bewildered, his mind filling with question marks as Yutia, still smiling, rattled off her words without even pausing to breathe.

She then turned her gaze to Seolrang and said, “So, Seolrang, you understand now, right? You shouldn’t put Lord in a difficult position. And, like I said before, it’s too early for you to think about marriage.”

“I didn’t put him in a difficult position! And the vice guild leader told me that a five-year age gap is perfect for marriage!”

“Seolrang, I said no. You shouldn’t make things hard for Lord.”

Yutia continued to speak with a smile, but Seolrang’s expression twisted in frustration as she shouted, “You’re the one who can’t! You’re too old!”

“…What do you mean by that, Seolrang? I’m only two years older than you.”

Yutia’s smile didn’t waver, but…

“I heard it from Rine. Your age is estimated to be thou—”

Before Seolrang could finish her sentence—

Boom! Crash!

Seolrang suddenly disappeared through the floor.

“…?”

Alon stared blankly at the scene, stunned by how quickly everything had unfolded. Yutia, who had been glaring down at where Seolrang had stood moments ago, suddenly noticed Alon’s presence again. She quickly softened her expression and smiled kindly.

“It seems the building is a bit weak.”

It was an obvious lie, but Yutia said it with a straight face.

“The building… is weak?” Alon asked.

“Yes.”

“…Really?”

“Really. It just collapsed all of a sudden, didn’t it?”

Despite her repeated insistence, as if she would never admit to having slammed Seolrang into the lower floor, Alon could only respond, “I see…”

Alon reluctantly nodded in agreement, while suddenly recalling that Yutia had once been one of the Five Great Sins. He thought to himself, ‘So, a woman’s age really is a taboo topic… But a thousand… a thousand years? I didn’t expect that.’ Alon filed away this new piece of information that he had never wanted to know.

“I’ll go fetch Seolrang,” Yutia said, ending the conversation.

A few minutes later, Alon saw Seolrang, creaking and moving like a puppet, seated back in her chair. He was reminded again of the absolute taboo she had broken.

For the next half hour, they conversed, sharing stories. Eventually, Yutia spoke up.

“Lord, I believe it’s time for me to take my leave.”

Alon nodded in response. “Yes, you did mention you had other business.”

“Yes, I’ll probably be here for about three weeks, so I’ll make sure to stop by often while you’re still around.”

“Alright.”

Just as Yutia was about to turn and leave with a small smile, she suddenly clapped her hands as if she had remembered something.

“Oh, and earlier, you mentioned that you would be participating in the Colosseum?”

They had indeed talked about that earlier during their conversation.

“Yeah, that’s right. As I said, I’m aiming to get something from the royal treasury.”

“The Sparrow’s Staff, right?”

“Correct.”

“Hmm…”

Yutia nodded lightly, understanding his intent.

“Well then, I’ll see you again soon,” she said with a smile, before leaving.

Alon watched as a white carriage headed toward the royal palace of the colony, and he turned his gaze to Seolrang, who let out a huge sigh of relief, finally feeling at ease.

“Alright, I suppose I should start preparing as well.”

***

The next day, after spending the night at Seolrang’s guild, Alon headed straight to the Colosseum and submitted his application to participate. Thanks to Seolrang’s help, the process, which usually took a week, was completed in just an hour.

“F-rank fighter pass… This is just the beginning.”

Holding the pass that all new applicants receive, Alon steeled himself for what was to come. Two days later…

– Waaaaahhhhhhh!! –

Alon stood in the arena of the Colosseum, about to participate in his first battle. He exhaled a shallow breath and looked around. The audience seats were packed with spectators, not a single seat was empty, and around 100 other fighters stood in the arena with him.

His first match was not a one-on-one duel but a battle royale, and the victory condition was simple: be the last fighter standing. There were no other conditions—survival was the only rule.

Though Alon generally preferred one-on-one matches, he chose the battle royale for one simple reason: winning a battle royale would allow him to jump from F-rank to D-rank in a single leap. Once a fighter reached D-rank, they gained the right to challenge higher-ranked fighters and exchange ranks, which would allow Alon to skip ahead faster.

As he glanced around, Alon thought to himself, “The only way to enter the royal treasury and retrieve the treasure I’m after is by becoming an A-rank fighter.”

Of course, becoming a Baba Yaga would allow access to the national treasure, the *Rebo*, but Alon didn’t need to go that far. The items he sought, including the Sparrow’s Staff, were housed in the treasury that an A-rank fighter could enter.

“It won’t be easy.”

Alon scanned the area. The other fighters gripped their weapons and stared back at him, as if they had all made some unspoken agreement.

Some were tense, others serious, and a few sneered or tried to gauge the situation carefully. Their emotions varied, but they all shared one thing in common: they were ready to point their weapons at him.

Of course, Alon had anticipated this. Even though the fighters here were all F-rank, none of them were mere cannon fodder. They had joined the battle royale with the goal of advancing by crushing the competition.

And to them, Alon was the clear target. Rumors had spread that he had fended off foreign enemies and played a major role in dealing with the Baba Yagas. For those aiming to win, taking Alon out first was only natural.

[“Alright then, the fighter’s match will begin shortly!”] the announcer’s voice boomed through the arena.

Most of the fighters tensed up, waiting for the signal, and as soon as it came—

[“Let the match… BEGIN!”]

—they all rushed toward Alon.

The situation grew tense in an instant. The arena echoed with the wild cheers of the spectators, while the fighters’ battle cries filled Alon’s ears. As the first fighter’s axe swung down toward his head—

With the faintest movement of Alon’s fingers, encased in his black battle armor—

Crack!

A sudden wave of freezing cold swept through the arena.

“|||”

The axe, just inches from Alon’s head, froze in mid-air.

“Ice Crystal,” Alon muttered, forming a hand seal.

A wall of ice began to rise around him.

Round 195

Prev | TOC | Next

As soon as the conversation with Michael ended, people started moving busily.

‘Is this really okay?’

No matter how famous and influential Michael was within the union, I wasn’t sure if it was acceptable for him to tour a dungeon alone like this.

Soon, Michael summoned all the awakened ones in the base, ordered them to guard me closely, and began to move toward the dungeon.

He already knew that Ara was my familiar, so he didn’t pay much attention to her.

“Don’t worry. We’re just going to take a quick look inside the entrance and come back out.”

Including Michael and me, there were a total of 10 people accompanying us.

To return from the dungeon, we would need to use a return stone, so this meant we were about to spend 1 billion won just for a brief entrance into the dungeon.

“Are you sure this is okay?”

“It’s fine. I’m covering all the costs myself.”

I wasn’t just asking about the money—I was questioning whether it was okay to make such a unilateral decision. But it felt like my words weren’t getting through.

Well, whatever.

I guess I’ll just go along with it.

I finished putting on all the protective gear Michael had prepared for me, and I also dressed Ara in her equipment.

“How fascinating.”

Ara was bouncing around like a space suit-wearing creature. From what I could tell, the people here seemed to have already fully assessed the dungeon’s environment.

“Just 15 minutes. We’ll check the inside for 15 minutes and come right back.”

With Michael’s words, the awakened ones began entering the dungeon one by one. They all looked tense, and I felt guilty as if they were being dragged along because of me.

Among them was Marcell, an awakened one from Austria who had called me last night, looking particularly anxious.

“Let’s go in.”

Michael, standing at the back, waited for Ara and me to enter.

Since we’d already been here the day before, we walked inside without any tension.

“…”

Was it my imagination, or did I hear Michael’s voice full of curiosity behind me? Before I could confirm, we were already inside the dungeon.

‘Something feels off.’

***

Michael watched Kyu-seong and Ara, who were walking ahead, with a puzzled expression.

It was definitely a Rank 9 dungeon, one associated with wrath, one of the Seven Deadly Sins. And yet, they showed no signs of concern as they entered.

Honestly, when he suggested the idea this morning, he hadn’t been too worried. He had expected them to decline.

‘Was this not a protest?’

Michael had assumed that Kyu-seong coming all the way here was some form of protest. He thought Kyu-seong was making a fuss to get more attention or support.

After all, there was no real reason for him to come here.

Everyone knew by now that Kyu-seong was not a combat-type awakened but rather someone from a production class.

It seemed impossible to believe he genuinely wanted to enter the dungeon.

“Um, Michael? Aren’t you going to enter?”

Someone spoke to him, but Michael remained silent, deep in thought. Kyu-seong’s behavior was simply incomprehensible.

While others were nervously trying to hide their fear, he casually put on his gear like he was heading out for a picnic.

At this point, Michael wondered if Kyu-seong had truly come because he wanted to explore the dungeon.

‘Does he not understand the dangers of high-level dungeons because he’s a production-class awakened?’

Michael thought this was a reasonable conclusion as he tried to make sense of Kyu-seong’s actions.

Soon after organizing his thoughts, he entered the dungeon.

And as soon as he stepped inside, he felt a sudden wave of heat.

Fwoosh!

He was well aware that the Dungeon of Wrath was filled with lava and volcanic zones. However, this heat was far from ordinary.

“Aaaah!”

“Run away!”

Monsters!

A wyvern was flying through the sky, spewing flames and toying with the ground below.

Its dragon-like appearance alone was terrifying, and to make matters worse, it was attacking.

The awakened ones who had entered earlier were desperately using their return stones, fleeing in a panic.

“Stop! No! Where’s Kyu-seong!?”

Michael tried to stop them, but the awakened ones were already in full panic, disappearing one by one.

In the end, Michael decided to deal with the wyvern rather than stop those returning.

Crack!

The ground around him split.

Stone spikes shot up, swirling around him before flying at the wyvern in an instant.

-Screeeech!

The wyvern, clearly injured by the attack, shrieked and fled.

“Phew.”

However, Michael had used up quite a bit of mana in that attack, feeling a slight dizziness. He quickly drank an expensive potion.

“These worthless fools.”

As he looked around, he realized there was no one left except him.

If anyone had been injured or killed, there should have been some traces, but the empty clearing was all that greeted him.

‘Did Kyu-seong return too?’

At least that was some relief.

The fact that there were no signs left meant that Kyu-seong must have made it out safely.

There was no reason to stay here alone, and it wasn’t as if he could endure it by himself anyway, so Michael took out his return stone as well.

-Screeeech!

At that moment, he noticed the wyvern he had struck earlier returning with its companions, flying toward him.

This was why high-level dungeons were dangerous. It wasn’t just one powerful monster; they often moved in groups.

“Hmph. I just need to use the return stone.”

Michael immediately activated the return stone.

In a flash, his view changed.

“M-Michael, sir…”

In front of him, the awakened ones were trembling like defeated soldiers. Marcell, in particular, appeared to have wet his pants, as his trousers were visibly damp.

“Ugh, you pathetic fools.”

Already in a foul mood, Michael cursed them out and ripped off the mask he was wearing, throwing it to the ground.

“Are you still calling yourselves awakened? If that’s how you behave, why even work at the base? What are you planning to do on the actual raid day when you’re acting like this now…?”

Though, to be fair, Michael’s sudden decision to move up the schedule had caused most of the problem, no one dared to say anything.

Even they knew how shameful it was to run away as soon as they entered.

And, in truth, there was another reason.

“Michael! I apologize!”

“I’m not finished talking!”

“T-The thing is! Kyu-seong is missing!”

“What?”

Finally, Michael began to check the members, or more accurately, he was searching for Kyu-seong’s presence.

“W-What? He’s gone? Why? Why isn’t he here?”

No one could answer his question.

In the first place, they were too busy trying to save themselves to worry about anyone else.

“No, why isn’t he here?!”

“I’m sorry!”

“Sorry? Sorry? Is ‘sorry’ enough? Huh?!”

Even when they used the return stones, no one was left in the dungeon.

He had checked thoroughly before leaving, so how could Kyu-seong not be here?

Michael began to realize the seriousness of the situation and paled.

He had valued Kyu-seong, but only in the sense of a useful asset, nothing more.

However, now that things had come to this, all sorts of problems began to surface in his mind.

‘If word gets out that Kyu-seong has gone missing, there will be chaos everywhere!’

After the attack incident, Kyu-seong had already proven his significance.

Just dealing with Korea, Kyu-seong’s home country, would be a headache.

But it wasn’t only Korea that would be in an uproar if something happened to him.

“Th-this… this…!!!”

Michael, overwhelmed with frustration, finally snapped.

His face turned bright red, and just as he was about to curse out loud, he suddenly felt something break, and his vision went dark.

“M-Michael, sir!”

“Call the medic! Get a medic!”

Michael’s last thought before he passed out was…

Of…

It’s over.

* **

“Wow, I didn’t expect things to go this way.”

As soon as we entered the dungeon and encountered the wyvern, everyone scattered in panic.

Taking advantage of the chaos, Ara and I ran toward the direction of Gnoll’s village. Thankfully, the wyvern was too distracted by the awakened ones who had annoyed it to notice us, so we made it through safely.

“It’s back. We’ve returned quickly.”

“Indeed. Ara, I’m going to change my clothes real quick. Do you need to change yours?”

“No! I like them!”

I quickly discarded the astronaut-like suit and put on the full armor of the Phoenix King again. Ugh, I felt like I was suffocating in that other suit.

Within a few hours, we were able to return to the gnolls again.

Since we had already traveled this path once before, we arrived much faster this time.

And this time, we had plenty of time to spare.

Outside, they were probably going crazy, thinking I was missing, but that’s their own fault.

‘Who told them to recklessly enter a dungeon like that?’

Still, I couldn’t stay too long, since news of my disappearance might even reach Korea.

I didn’t want to cause unnecessary worry.

“Knock, knock! We’re back again.”

Using Ara’s clairvoyance and insight, we avoided all the monsters and made it back to the hidden cave. We knocked on the camouflage wall again.

This time, the gnolls came out right away, without any hint of suspicion.

-Kenkeng!

-Kengken!

“Hahaha.”

Like little puppies, they jumped into my arms, full of affection.

I petted the gatekeeper gnolls for a while and then we headed underground together.

It seemed they had sensed my arrival because everyone was waiting for us at the village entrance.

‘These guys really seem to trust humans.’

It was hard to read the thoughts of slimes, and goblins were more loyal than affectionate.

Each species had its own distinct characteristics, which I found fascinating.

“You’ve come back quickly! Did you miss me that much!”

“Ah, Ras!”

Waving cheerfully, I greeted Ras, whose tail wagged in response.

His words and actions were always oddly out of sync, which only added to his charm.

To celebrate our reunion, Ras happily chewed on a dog treat.

He hadn’t touched the one I gave him the day before, saving it for my and Ara’s return.

“I didn’t expect you back so soon. Then again, I suppose I am quite charming, enough for you to return quickly.”

Ras, curled up on my lap and wagging his tail furiously, said that with a smirk. How is that not cheating?

Of course, I had been eager to see Ras too, but it seemed he had missed Ara and me even more.

“Ras!”

“What is it, Ara?”

“When we go to my house, there’s something even tastier than this!”

Oh, Ara’s already trying to sell the idea!

Without even speaking, the conversation naturally flowed.

– Your house? How would I visit your home?

“Kyu-seong can open the door!”

Since we were in a village, there was a makeshift door in place. Thankfully, there was no need to tear down a door just for this.

– Open a door?

“With my ability, I can teleport through spaces. As long as there’s a door, I can open Ara’s dungeon anytime.”

– Hoho. That’s quite remarkable. It’s the first time I’ve heard of such an ability.

Was he showing interest?

If he visited once, he would see that it’s a better place than this and might even want to move there, right?

Half in expectation and half in excitement, I waited for Ras’s response. Finally, Ras opened his mouth.

– In that case, perhaps I should visit once…

Thud!!!

Huh? What’s going on now?

Suddenly, the ceiling trembled.

At the same time, a loud roar echoed.

– Graaaooo!!!

A monster’s roar?

But the sound was no joke. Even though we were quite deep underground, it still managed to create this kind of noise…

“What is that sound?”

Ara, hearing it, was all excited and asked.

Ras furrowed his brows and stood up from my lap.

– It seems to have woken up.

“Woken up?”

– Did you not see the cave on the way here?

“I did.”

“I saw it.”

– It belongs to the master of that cave. Thanks to that creature, this village remains safe.

Ah, so that cave had an owner.

Well, it did seem like the perfect spot for a monster’s nest.

But judging by that powerful roar, it didn’t seem like an ordinary monster.

– It’s time to put it back to sleep again.

“Huh? Put it to sleep?”

– It always roars loudly when it’s awake. So, after it’s had a meal, I usually go out and put it back to sleep myself.

Ras, the one personally handling the “noise complaints” from this monster.

What kind of method does he use to put it to sleep, I wonder?

“How do you do that?”

– A knock on the head.

“Huh?”

– When I give it a knock on the head, it falls asleep. For now, I’ll let it eat a bit since it just woke up.

Wait… So, Ras puts it to sleep by giving it a little bonk with his tiny paw?

As expected, a knock from Ras is divine.

The absurdly small range of the ice formation spell disappeared before even reaching three seconds.

In fact, the actual implementation was so weak that it had no practical use.

“My magic power…”

Even with just that, Alon felt his mana core completely drained, and he suddenly realized just how reckless he had been when fighting the foreign force half a year ago.

‘I should have been grateful just for surviving back then.’

With that thought, Alon looked at the dragonkin who had been mocking him moments ago.

Even though all he could see was a dark form with nothing more than white holes where its eyes and mouth should have been, Alon could clearly make out its expression.

The dragonkin, mouth agape in disbelief, stared at the spot where the magic had manifested just moments before.

[How… how is that possible? You clearly don’t know anything about Mind Resonance or anything else…]

The dragonkin mumbled in disbelief, its face showing utter shock as if its very understanding of the world had been shattered.

“Keep your promise.”

Alon reminded him of the most important thing.

The dragonkin’s expression twisted.

For a moment, it seemed like the dragonkin was going to shout that Alon had lied, that the promise was void.

But after Alon’s remark about how someone of its rank should at least keep its own words, the dragonkin groaned as though it carried the burdens of the world.

[Master…]

Grinding its teeth with an audible crack, the dragonkin finally managed to speak.

Although the words seemed to carry more murderous intent than respect, Alon nodded to himself in satisfaction, feeling a sense of vindication.

[Do you really not know anything about Mind Resonance?]

The dragonkin asked again.

Alon nodded.

“I don’t.”

[…It doesn’t seem like you’re lying.]

“Why is it such a big deal?” Alon asked, genuinely confused.

The dragonkin hesitated for a moment before explaining.

[As I said before, magic was originally created to approach ‘laws.’ Phrases, seals, and inscriptions all serve that purpose.]

[However, there’s a key difference: while phrases and seals can be used if their meaning is understood, inscriptions alone aren’t enough.]

Sitting on the edge of the desk, the dragonkin continued.

[As I mentioned last time, inscriptions are the key to accessing the laws that mages have imprinted upon this world.]

“I remember you saying that… but if what you’re saying is true, and one must understand Mind Resonance to perform self-manifestation, why did you teach me that inscription? If I really needed to know Mind Resonance, wouldn’t I have been unable to use it even if you taught me?”

In response to Alon’s curious question, the dragonkin answered immediately.

[You’re right and wrong at the same time. As I said before, inscriptions are keys, but they are also a means to interfere with the laws. That means they can be used as keys, but also to twist the laws.]

Alon nodded in understanding.

He had used the ice formation spell in different forms before attempting self-manifestation. He also understood which law the inscription ‘Glory of the Snowy Mountains’ distorted now.

“So it has two uses, then.”

[Exactly. While it’s mainly a key to help mages approach the laws they’ve inscribed, it can also be utilized as a law itself.]

The dragonkin continued.

[But as I’ve said many times before, self-manifestation requires Mind Resonance. Mind Resonance is memory.]

“…Memory?”

Alon tilted his head slightly in confusion, and the dragonkin hesitated for a moment before explaining further.

[Yes. People talk about inheriting history or knowledge, but in the end, it’s all memory. The memory of when mages first approached the laws and created the inscriptions.]

[That’s what I call Mind Resonance, and it’s absolutely necessary to use inscriptions as keys. That’s why I said it didn’t make sense.]

The dragonkin furrowed its brow and added in a slightly lower voice.

[In this world, neither Mind Resonance nor the mages who could pass it on to their successors remain.]

A brief silence followed.

But soon, the dragonkin’s sigh broke the quiet.

[That’s why I can’t quite understand. How exactly did you manage to succeed in self-manifestation?]

It looked at Alon with a puzzled expression, but naturally, Alon had nothing to say in response.

After all, even Alon himself didn’t know how he had managed to use self-manifestation.

No, to be more precise, he did know the method. He formed a seal, spoke the phrase, and uttered the inscription.

With that, Alon successfully executed self-manifestation.

However, it conflicted with what the dragonkin had just explained.

The explanation that self-manifestation required inheriting Mind Resonance was at odds with Alon’s experience, as he had no memory of inheriting any Mind Resonance.

That wasn’t the only contradiction. There was also a significant gap between the common knowledge of the dragonkin and what Alon knew.

First, up until now, Alon had used phrases, inscriptions, and seals to cast magic, but most of it was knowledge he acquired by speaking the phrases himself and learning through experience.

In other words, he had figured out the meaning of the phrases through trial and error, without any prior understanding.

But the dragonkin had clearly stated that phrases and inscriptions could only be used if one understood their meaning.

In essence, what it said seemed to suggest that the way Alon had learned magic on his own should have been impossible.

“Before I say anything else, there’s something I’d like to ask.”

[What is it?]

Alon then expressed his doubts to the dragonkin, who, after listening for a while, muttered,

[…Does that even make sense?]

It stared blankly, genuinely unable to understand.

“But that’s how I’ve been doing it. And it’s the same now.”

Alon’s response was met with a disbelieving chuckle from the dragonkin, who was about to say something further when—

Rumble!

“?”

Alon looked puzzled as the tower suddenly began to shake, as though an earthquake had struck.

[…It seems my time is up.]

“Time?”

[The time I can manifest in this world is short, and it seems like it’s coming to an end.]

Alon instinctively furrowed his brow at this explanation, but the dragonkin smiled as if to reassure him.

[Don’t worry too much. You can come back in five days, and we’ll talk again. I’ll explain what you’re curious about then. And—]

[-If possible, find ‘Sparrow’s Staff’ and receive the phrases and inscriptions from the one inside. You’ll be able to communicate by channeling magic into it.]

Sparrow’s Staff…? An ego weapon?

[More like a weapon imbued with a personality, a bit of a nutcase. Get the phrases and inscriptions from it.]

“So you’re saying these inscriptions are like secret techniques, yet you’re telling me it’ll easily share them?”

[Don’t worry about that. The one inside regrets not being able to pass on its knowledge, so it’ll be more than willing to teach you.]

[I’m looking forward to it. If what you say is true, you’ll be able to—]

The dragonkin let out a sly smile once again.

[-Use the magic of all mages with just phrases, inscriptions, and seals. And—]

Before finishing its sentence, the dragonkin vanished in an instant, leaving Alon staring into the empty space in silence.

***

A little time passed.

Alon, having left the ruins, was now in a carriage, deep in thought.

He hadn’t learned the secrets that had originally brought him there, the mysteries he had been curious about for so long. But his focus had shifted away from those secrets.

The secrets weren’t much of a risk, considering he had to stay in the colony for at least two more weeks thanks to the Colosseum.

Instead, Alon was reflecting on what the dragonkin had said.

‘…You can’t use magic without understanding phrases, inscriptions, and self-manifestation, huh?’

He had thought about it over and over again.

‘That dragonkin didn’t seem like it was lying, so how was I able to use them?’

Despite contemplating the issue multiple times, he knew there was no way to find an answer to something he didn’t understand.

‘I feel like there’s something to this…’

With a slight sense of curiosity, he soon shifted his thoughts to another topic.

‘Sparrow’s Staff, huh…’

Fortunately, Alon knew where the Sparrow’s Staff, mentioned by the dragonkin, was located.

‘It should be in the royal treasury of the colony.’

He had already entered the royal family’s vault several times during quests to retrieve various items, so he was familiar with the location.

However, despite knowing where it was, Alon had never taken the Sparrow’s Staff out.

The item was among the least useful in terms of performance within the vault.

‘…Its abilities aren’t impressive enough to choose over something else I originally planned to take.’

Even so, he didn’t intend to ignore the dragonkin’s advice, so after a moment of deliberation, he decided.

‘Guess I don’t have a choice… I should register as a fighter in the Colosseum first.’

He made up his mind to join the Colosseum this time and retrieve the Sparrow’s Staff.

Thus…

“Master!”

“Yes?”

“Can you pat my head?”

“…Your head?”

“Yeah!”

As he stroked Seolrang’s hair, who had leaned in next to him for a head pat—

“Hmm—”

—she was clearly enjoying it, even though his hand was barely moving as she rubbed her head against it on her own.

Together, they arrived at the colony.

And…

“…Huh?”

The moment they entered, Alon noticed that the atmosphere was unusually chaotic.

Rather, after realizing that there was hardly any foot traffic within the colony, Alon looked puzzled, but only for a moment.

As they continued toward the guild by carriage, Alon saw an immense crowd gathered along the central street of the colony and immediately halted the carriage.

It was impossible to drive through the crowd.

Moreover—

“Lady Seolrang, it seems we’ll have to wait until the crowd passes.”

The beastman who had scouted ahead reported the situation, and Seolrang looked at Alon.

After a brief moment of thought, Alon said, “Let’s wait and take a look while we’re at it.”

He stepped out of the carriage, his curiosity piqued by the bustling scene.

It seemed as though the entire population of the colony had gathered, lining both sides of the central road.

As Alon stepped out of the carriage and made his way through the crowd, he eventually spotted a carriage approaching from a distance.

“Stop.”

A mercenary blocked Alon’s path.

The mercenary, clearly rough-looking, gave Alon a light shove with the hand holding his sword and spoke.

“No one is allowed to approach Lord Milanon.”

A blatant warning.

Only then did Alon notice that, despite the crowd, this area was empty, guarded by mercenaries.

Alon turned his gaze toward the man standing within the cordon of mercenaries.

He looked like a noble from the colony, adorned with various decorations, with an unmistakably arrogant demeanor.

Having apparently heard the mercenary’s words, the noble glanced at Alon, smirked, and then turned his gaze away.

At that moment, Alon couldn’t help but chuckle inwardly at the sight of this noble, who, like many of his kind, seemed to derive a sense of entitlement from the most trivial things.

Crack!

In an instant, the mercenary who had blocked Alon’s path vanished, smashing into a nearby grocery store.

It had all happened in a flash.

The crowd’s attention immediately turned to the scene, and the mercenaries who had formed the barricade began to move before they could even assess the situation.

At that moment—

Zap!

Boom! Crash!

The mercenaries who had been advancing toward Alon were sent flying through the air and slammed into buildings.

“Se, Seolrang!?”

The noble, Milanon, who had been smirking just moments ago, recoiled in shock at the sudden appearance of Seolrang.

“Aaaaaaaah!!!”

He began to scream as Seolrang grabbed his head.

Then—

“He mocked you, Master. What should I do with him?”

Seolrang turned to Alon with a bright smile, a stark contrast to the way she had been handling Milanon. Alon was at a loss for words.

Without giving him a chance to intervene, Seolrang gripped the noble’s head tightly, as if she might crush it any moment, simply because he had mocked Alon.

“Should I kill him?”

While it was undeniably satisfying, Alon couldn’t help but feel it was a bit too extreme.

“At least not in such a crowded street…”

Alon, who had been wondering how to handle the situation, turned his attention to the murmuring around him.

He soon realized that the white carriage that had been crossing the crowded street had stopped right in front of him. At the same time, he recognized where the carriage had come from.

‘The Holy Kingdom, huh.’

As Alon noticed the paladins, he had that thought, and just then, the door of the stopped carriage opened, and someone began to step out.

It was a girl dressed in black, but with red embroidery sewn in various places on her sacred attire.

“Hm?”

Alon only tilted his head in confusion for a brief moment, feeling that her face seemed strangely familiar.

“Ca- Cardinal!”

Alon heard the voice of the noble Milanon, whose head was still being held by Seolrang, as he called out to the girl. In that instant, Alon instinctively sensed that the situation was about to become more complicated.

If someone didn’t know what had just transpired, this scene would look like Alon and Seolrang were bullying an innocent noble.

Milanon, who seemed eager to take advantage of the situation, put on an exaggeratedly pitiful expression. Alon wondered if he should try to clear up the misunderstanding.

But contrary to his expectations, the girl who had stepped out of the carriage didn’t head toward the noble with his head caught in Seolrang’s grasp.

No, she didn’t even glance at him, as if she had no interest in him at all. Instead, she walked straight toward Alon.

“Eek!”

As Seolrang, wagging her tail wildly, moved aside, the girl approached Alon and took his left hand with both of hers.

Then—

“It’s been so long.”

At that moment, as the girl’s red eyes—now revealed as she opened them—met his gaze, Alon realized who she was.

The girl standing before him was none other than—

“Lord.”

—Ytia Bludia.

In a street now filled with astonishment and silence, where the murmuring had died down, she smiled at him without a word.

Round 194

Prev | TOC | Next

The cat in boots.

No, it was actually a dog in boots.

-Hmm, I’ve never seen them before, yet they know me?

But despite their appearance, their way of speaking was strange.

Before I met them, Ara had said they were cool, but could it be that you’re the one who influenced Ara’s speech?

“Ras! It is I!”

-Hmm? “It is I”? That familiar tone… surely…

“It is Ara!”

-Gula?!

The dog in boots, who was about Ara’s height, no, Ras, came running and held both of Ara’s hands.

-Hahaha! To think you’d come here! I’m so glad!

“Ras is still so cool!”

-Haha. And you are still so valiant!

The two of them got along perfectly.

Somehow, Ara looked much more excited than during the time with Mammon.

But really, I just couldn’t see how they matched.

This adorably cute creature was using an old-fashioned martial arts novel style of speech with such a cute voice.

And what’s this? Wrath, you say?

If this little one is wrathful, then am I supposed to be utterly enraged?

‘In that case, would Brother Hanul be considered a divine wrath?’

Ahem.

My apologies, Brother Hanul. I wasn’t trying to insult your appearance, but you just came to mind, sturdy and dependable as you are.

Anyway, as I watched their heartwarming reunion, Ras turned his attention to me.

-Who might you be?

“This is Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! My dad!”

-What?! Gula’s father?!

Ras started looking at me with a strange gaze.

Then he settled in front of me and looked at me intently.

-Remarkable! To think I would meet Gula’s father!

This just about confirmed my suspicions.

Maybe the Seven Deadly Sins aren’t as terrifying as people make them out to be.

Ras, with his sparkling eyes fixed on me, was incredibly cute.

The other creatures were also quite cute, but this one was overwhelmingly so.

“Uh… nice to meet you?”

-Nice to meet you. I am Ras, leader and guardian of these beings.

He clearly thought he was introducing himself in a cool way, striking a pose.

It was so endearingly cute that I couldn’t help but pat his head.

“You know, Ras, you really do look cool.”

-As expected of Gula’s father, you have a good eye!

“I am Ara!”

Ara interrupted from the side.

But Ras, completely unbothered, reveled in my pats like a dog, even closing his eyes in bliss.

-Yes, yes! A little higher would be perfect!

“Here? This spot?”

-Yes! Right there!

Watching this, Ara also started patting Ras, and soon Ras lay down on the ground, belly up.

Who would ever think this was the boss of Wrath?

As I rubbed Ras’s belly, I remembered I had brought dog treats to share with the others.

“This is a housewarming gift.”

-A gift? It smells delicious.

“Yup, it’s edible.”

“It’s tasty!”

Ara demonstrated by biting into a treat, and Ras quickly followed, chomping down on it too.

-This… this is…!

Seeing Ras enjoying the treat, the other creatures in the area also started approaching with interest.

“Here, you guys can have some too. I brought plenty.”

To make sure no one was left out, I handed out treats one by one.

Ara also joined me in distributing them.

“Delicious things are meant to be shared.”

Ara, with a satisfied smile, handed out the dog treats.

It reminded me of how she takes care of Seon-ah, like a big sister moment.

“Our Ara is so sweet.”

“Hehe.”

As we continued handing out the treats, the time to head back was approaching.

I took out the rest of the treats I had brought and handed them to Ras.

-What, this many treats!!

“It’s time for us to head back now. We’ll come again next time. That’s our gift for you, Ras.”

-You’re leaving already! I feel a little sad.

Ras’s tail and ears drooped.

Despite his grandiose speech, his actions were adorably cute. It was funny how he kept chewing the treat while saying he was sad.

I patted Ras’s head once more and called Ara.

“Ara, come here.”

“Are you leaving?”

“Yes, it’s time to go.”

The return stone was designed to return familiars along with us.

Thanks to that, I used the return stone and waved goodbye to Ras and the others.

“If we’re quick, we’ll come back tomorrow. If not, the day after tomorrow.”

Next time, I’ll try to convince them to move to a new place.

-I’ll wait here for you again.

Although he tried to sound dignified, his droopy ears and tail made him look both pitiful and lovable.

I guess I’ll have to come back soon.

With that, we used the return stone and were quickly able to escape the dungeon.

We stood at the entrance of the Wrath dungeon, where we had first entered.

Some people were nearby, but they still hadn’t noticed our presence.

‘There are about 13 minutes left?’

Enough time, but still cutting it close.

According to Mammon, the poison should wear off exactly on time. We needed to get back to the base before that.

Still carrying the door, we quickly returned to our lodgings.

Ara was thrilled, acting like she was on some kind of spy mission.

Once we were back at the base, there were about 5 minutes left.

We quickly put the door back where it belonged and removed our full-body armor, stuffing it into the backpack.

Knock, knock, knock.

Just then, there was a knock at the door.

I mumbled to myself, pretending not to care, and called out softly.

“Who is it? Who are you?”

Then, from the other side of the door, I heard the voice of Director Gaston.

“(It’s Gaston. Could we have a word? I apologize for the late hour.)”

Quickly running the translation app, I opened the door, acting as if nothing was wrong.

Meanwhile, Ara pretended to be fast asleep on the bed.

“Zzz!”

Ara, isn’t that a bit too obvious?

I chuckled at her adorable act and welcomed Gaston.

“What’s the matter?”

“(I’m sorry to disturb you so suddenly. I know it’s an intrusion, but some representatives from the Union are here, asking if they could meet with you.)”

“I see, we can meet. But it’s already past 11 o’clock…”

“(I sincerely apologize for that. I have no excuse.)”

Judging by his reaction, he had no idea I had been to the dungeon.

Thinking our operation had been a success, I sighed calmly.

“All right, I’ll give them a bit of time. If they need a longer talk, we’ll continue tomorrow.”

“(Thank you so much.)”

Using the translation app to communicate, I followed Gaston to his office.

“(Hello, I’m Marcell from the Union.)”

The Union representative greeted me naturally.

But these weren’t the same people I met last time in Korea.

“Hello, Marcell. But I don’t remember meeting you before. The ones I met last time aren’t here.”

“(Oh, those individuals are no longer part of the Union.)”

“What? What do you mean by that…?”

“(They left the Union due to internal issues.)”

Something…

Something felt off.

Could it be because of me that they were let go?

‘That’s… a bit unfortunate.’

After hearing the rough details of the attack, it seemed that the British representative had acted independently. However, the Austrian personnel who were in Korea at the time got caught up in the mess as well.

‘Looks like they ended up being fired.’

Those people had even come to me personally, kneeling and apologizing, which made me feel bad. It wasn’t their fault at the time, but they still apologized, clearly uncomfortable.

“Hm…

“(But Mr. Lee, why did you suddenly visit Wrath?)”

“Was your name Marcell?”

“(Yes? Yes, that’s correct.)”

“Did you call me just to ask about that? Do you know what time it is?”

“(Uh, well, that’s…)”

“I was just sightseeing since I had a permit. Honestly, who else would want to take a tour of the Wrath dungeon?”

I tried to act as annoyed as possible.

I figured this would get me out of the situation faster.

To be honest, I did feel a bit guilty.

I can’t really criticize Ara when I’m just as bad at acting.

“(Ahem, I apologize. I rushed over the moment I heard you had arrived, and in my haste, I didn’t consider the time.)”

“Shall we continue the conversation tomorrow then?”

“(Let’s do that.)”

I bowed lightly and returned to my room.

As I entered, Ara, who had been pretending to sleep, peeked at me and, realizing it was me, got up.

“Did you manage to get through it, Kyu-seong Kyu-seong?”

“Yeah, I think I did.”

“Oh! The plan was a success!”

“Well, half-successful. Ara, do you remember our goal?”

“To get Ras and the others to move!”

“That’s right. You’ve memorized it well. As expected of you, Ara.”

“Hehe!”

From my perspective, everything had passed the test.

I never expected Ras to be such an adorable dog.

Although the other creatures were closer to hyena-like monsters, Ras was definitely a dog.

Even if he hadn’t passed, I was determined to help them move.

Whether I liked him or not wasn’t the issue; if I didn’t take them, they might be hunted down.

Still, I had hoped they’d be obedient and kind, and Ras exceeded my expectations perfectly.

On top of that, as Mammon had said, Ras was rather simple-minded, and Ara and Mammon’s seemingly contradictory statements both turned out to be true.

‘Maybe he’s not as cool as they said, though.’

Anyway, now that I understood Ras, it was time to make another move.

Judging by the conditions inside the dungeon, moving shouldn’t be a problem.

The environment wasn’t ideal for the creatures.

They were practically living in underground burrows, so if I suggested moving, they’d likely be happy to leave.

“For now, let’s get some sleep. It’s late.”

“Okay!”

Though Ara nodded enthusiastically, still wide-eyed from the adventure, she quickly fell asleep as soon as she lay down beside me.

Let’s carry out the next phase of the plan tomorrow, Ara!

***

The next morning.

I woke up to the expected outcome, though it was bigger than I anticipated.

“Michael is here?”

“(He flew in from France. He arrived at dawn and will be ready to meet you soon.)”

Wow, I didn’t expect such a high-profile figure to show up.

I had expected someone from the Union to come, but I thought Marcell, whom I met yesterday, would be enough.

But Michael Rodman from France came here himself.

‘Was that really necessary?’

Could it be that they figured me out?!

No, if that were the case, I wouldn’t be sitting here so calmly.

During breakfast, I finally got to see Michael.

“(Hello. I didn’t get to greet you properly last time, so I came in person.)”

“We meet again so soon. It’s nice to see you.”

“(Kyu-seong, I have a proposal for you. Would you like to hear it?)”

Michael cut straight to the point without any pleasantries, which made me tense up.

Meanwhile, Ara, completely unconcerned, was happily enjoying her breakfast beside me.

“(Aren’t you curious about the Wrath dungeon?)”

“What?”

“(If it’s just a brief visit, I can guide you in and out.)”

It was an offer I hadn’t anticipated.

Duke Komalon of the Ashtalon Kingdom, located in the west of the Asteria Kingdom, was a noble who held immense power, even within the Ashtalon Kingdom. Though most nobles were unaware, he also wielded a tremendous influence in the underworld. In fact, there was no place in the underworld of the United Kingdom where his reach didn’t extend—until recently.

“Hm…”

Late at night, Duke Komalon, whose youthful face betrayed his status as a middle-aged man who had held the title for over 20 years, stared at documents in his tranquil study. Suddenly, he spoke.

“So, it’s difficult to exert influence in the Asteria Kingdom?”

Speaking to himself in an empty study, yet despite the lack of visible figures around him, a voice responded.

“Yes, that’s correct.”

With that reply, a man emerged from the shadows, kneeling before Duke Komalon. This man, named Shuto, controlled immense power in the underworld of the Ashtalon Kingdom on behalf of the duke.

Without turning his head, the duke continued asking questions.

“Not at all?”

“Yes, they’ve eliminated all of our operatives there.”

“Did the organizations that received Abyssal Gems and Abyssal Bodies collapse that easily?”

“Well…”

Shuto hesitated for a moment before answering.

“No organizations worthy of receiving Abyssal Gems or Abyssal Bodies have taken root in Asteria yet.”

“I see. So, there were no suitable recruits.”

“My apologies.”

Shuto bowed his head. The duke, tapping his quill absentmindedly, responded calmly.

“There’s no need to bow your head.”

“I’m sorr—”

Just as Shuto lowered his head further to speak, something felt off, and as he recognized the incongruity, his vision shifted, revealing Duke Komalon’s figure in reverse.

“?”

Shuto’s face twisted in confusion, unable to comprehend the situation.

And then—

“Dying will be your apology.”

With that, Shuto’s body collapsed with a thud, and as soon as the quiet voice gave the order, shadows emerged from the darkness, dragging Shuto’s body off the study floor.

Shortly after—

“Injela.”

At the call of Duke Komalon, who had killed the underworld powerbroker with ease, another figure stepped out of the shadows—this time a dark elf with black skin and large ears, speaking up.

“You called?”

“Yes, from now on, you will handle things.”

“Understood.”

The dark elf nodded. Without a second glance at Shuto’s body, being dragged into the shadows, Duke Komalon spoke again.

“And… did you say we can’t exert influence in Asteria?”

“Yes.”

“That’s troubling. It’s necessary for the plan.”

“Shall we act?”

The dark elf inquired.

However, Duke Komalon seemed to ponder for a moment before shaking his head.

“No, we should focus on what’s happening in Rakshasha. There’s no need to reveal our strength right now. So… the leader of Kalpha is… Count Palatio, right?”

“Yes. Kalpha, which dominates the underworld in Asteria, operates under that noble.”

“Count Palatio, huh.”

There was a trace of interest in Duke Komalon’s muttering. This was because Count Palatio had recently interfered with his plans a few times. Though it didn’t seem intentional, there had been several instances where he had to redo unnecessary tasks due to the count’s involvement.

Additionally, recent rumors had piqued his interest, especially as they pertained to his ongoing ‘plans.’

“Don’t move directly. It’ll be troublesome if we’re caught moving on our end.”

“Understood. So, what should we do?”

“Tell those who’ve been bribed to express their discontent to Count Palatio. Our goal is just to exercise some influence, after all. If we shake up his prestige a bit, cracks will start to appear quickly.”

As if fully aware of how futile a sandcastle built on politics could be, Komalon spoke casually.

“This is actually good timing. They’ve been asking for us to pay more attention to Asteria as well. Once we deal with the count, we can use that as leverage to expand our influence.”

“Understood.”

The dark elf Injela responded, and Komalon, about to lower his gaze back to the documents, paused as if something occurred to him.

“And how’s the experiment going?”

“If you’re referring to young master Carmine, he’s currently in the isolation room.”

“His condition?”

“In previous tests with the Abyssal Gems, although there were symptoms of anxiety and increased violence, he could still manage daily life. However, after absorbing the Abyssal Body this year, his violence and rage have become uncontrollable, and he’s essentially broken.”

Injela reported calmly, but Duke Komalon, though hearing such a report, showed no change in expression as he mulled it over.

“I see.”

“I understand. I’ll handle the Asteria side properly.”

With that, he shifted his gaze, no longer interested.

“Understood.”

The dark elf bowed his head and disappeared on the spot, leaving the duke’s office to return to its earlier stillness. It was as if no one had ever been there in the first place.

***

Alon stared blankly at the marriage registration form, then turned his gaze to Seolrang.

Seolrang’s eyes were glowing brightly.

“Let’s become a family!”

Seolrang had an expectant look on her face, but Alon, holding the form, thought, ‘This is a bit…’

With a slightly awkward expression behind his neutral face, he asked, “Is there anything else you want?”

“Nope!”

“…Sorry, but I can’t agree to this.”

“Eh—”

Seolrang’s ears drooped in disappointment, clearly showing her dismay. However, no matter how disappointed she looked, Alon had no intention of marrying her right away.

Objectively speaking, there was nothing lacking in Seolrang as a potential bride. She was incredibly beautiful, and her honor and status were nothing to scoff at either.

But that was from an objective viewpoint. To Alon, there were several issues that made him hesitate.

First, although there wasn’t a huge age difference between them, Alon had always thought of Seolrang as a daughter figure.

Second, Alon believed that Seolrang didn’t truly love him; she just wanted to get married to him to become ‘family.’ In other words, she liked him, but she wasn’t in love with him.

These two points were significant to Alon, who held fairly traditional views on relationships, and that’s why he refused her request.

“Uu—”

Seolrang let out a pitiful sound, her tail drooping sadly, as if she were feeling down. Alon then…

‘First of all, I need to soothe her after the trauma from the previous betrayal, but saying things like ‘We’re family’ probably won’t help much.’

After a brief moment of thought, Alon made up his mind and spoke.

“Let’s think about this again after you get a little older.”

“…How much older?”

“…Two years?”

Alon sighed inwardly. He figured saying something too far off wouldn’t be comforting, while saying something too soon would sound strange, so he landed on two years as a compromise, mostly for reassurance.

‘Did I say too short a time?’

But regardless of his concerns, Seolrang, seeing a glimmer of hope, brightened up and wagged her tail.

“Okay!”

Seeing her perk up, Alon let out a sigh of relief.

‘Well, in two years, she’ll probably change her mind.’

Alon thought briefly.

***

Some time later, Alon arrived at a forgotten ruin. Leaving Seolrang, who had insisted on waiting behind, he immediately began moving. He soon reached the central tower, where he had previously encountered something unknown. Without hesitation, he made his way up the tower.

And then…

[Oh, you’ve come.]

As soon as he entered a large room, a figure appeared before him as if it had been waiting. Alon’s eyes widened in surprise.

The last time they met, this figure had been so distorted that it was impossible to recognize. Now, its form was clear. It had the physique of a human, yet it sported antlers on its head and a long tail that extended from its back.

“A… dragon? No… a dragonkin?”

Though still obscured like a shadow, Alon could now roughly discern the figure’s identity.

[Ho, you can see me now? I suppose defeating the outer god has raised your level. Quite impressive. Honestly, I didn’t think you’d manage.]

Alon replied to the dragonkin-like figure, which still resembled a shadow.

“I nearly died doing it.”

[If a mere human can handle an outer god and only ‘almost’ die, that in itself is quite remarkable, isn’t it? Although… judging by the energy, it seems you dealt with it before it fully manifested.]

The figure sat cross-legged atop the desk in the study and propped its chin in its hand.

[Still, it’s curious. How did you kill it, even if it hadn’t fully manifested? It’s not something a human should be able to do.]

The dragonkin, forming a question mark with its long tail, seemed genuinely curious.

“I used *Manifestation of Essence*.”

[…Huh? *Manifestation of Essence*? You?]

“Yes.”

[…Pfft.]

Alon answered calmly, but the figure, which had been speaking arrogantly just moments before, suddenly went blank. Then—

[Puhahahahahaha!!]

It burst into uncontrollable laughter, leaning back like a child, slapping the desk as it laughed. Alon, taken aback by the sudden reaction, could only watch in confusion.

[Ahh, I’m sorry, I haven’t heard such a joke in a long time.]

“What part of that was a joke?”

[The part where you claim to have succeeded in *Manifestation of Essence*, of course.]

The dragonkin wiped tears from its eyes, still chuckling.

[Well, it’s easy to misunderstand. After all, a wizard needs pride, but a bit of arrogance too.]

The figure, now blatantly mocking him, continued.

[Let me tell you something. It’s impossible for you to have succeeded in *Manifestation of Essence*. How can a mere human, who hasn’t even mastered *Mind Resonance*, succeed in *Manifestation of Essence*?]

“…Mind Resonance?”

[See? You don’t even know what *Mind Resonance* is, and you’re talking about *Manifestation of Essence*. Pfft.]

The dragonkin snickered, resting its hand on Alon’s shoulder as it added.

[I’ll give you credit for defeating the outer god, but lies aren’t good. Oh, and if you’re embarrassed, I’ll let you leave for a moment to regain your composure. Take your time.]

Still giggling, the dragonkin removed its hand from Alon’s shoulder. Alon, looking at the figure, asked.

“…Do you really think I lied?”

[Of course.]

“And what if I didn’t?”

[If you didn’t—]

The dragonkin, still maintaining its smug expression, grinned widely.

[Then if you can prove it right here, I’ll start calling you ‘Master’ from now on! How about that? Can you prove it?]

The dragonkin proposed this as if it were all a joke.

“Make sure you keep that promise.”

Alon warned as he formed a seal with his hands.

[Oh, I’ll definitely keep it! If you can really prove it.]

The dragonkin, still filled with ridicule, sneered. But Alon thought to himself.

‘Can I do it?’

Truthfully, recreating *Manifestation of Essence* with his current power was nearly impossible. However, this wasn’t a real battle.

‘If it’s just to demonstrate a small-scale version, without practical use, I should have enough magic to pull it off.’

With that thought, he quietly began chanting. As the spell slowly started to take form, the dragonkin, who had been grinning up until then, froze.

As the ice sphere in front of Alon slowly morphed into a giant crystal, forming a spear, the grin faded from the dragonkin’s face. The spear twisted and turned, creating the key to *Manifestation of Essence*.

[Huh?]

For the first time, confusion filled the dragonkin’s eyes. The dragonkin, with wide eyes, as if something had gone terribly wrong, stared at the scene in disbelief.

And then—

“Ice Spear of Conjuration.”

As Alon uttered the final words of the spell, the frozen ground spread before him.

[Nonsense…!?]

The face of the Dragonkin was filled with astonishment.

Round 193

Prev | TOC | Next

After the lava crocodile, we encountered a few more peculiar monsters.

There was a monster like a golem that ate hardened lava rocks, a monster that seemed to be the owner of the egg we saw earlier, resembling a wyvern, and a gigantic insect-like monster with a mix of mantis and beetle features, which seemed to feed on that egg.

Of course, Ara took care of all of them.

“Time for a knuckle rap!”

Ara is invincible, and knuckle raps are divine.

In the end, she succeeded in giving every monster a knuckle rap.

Except for the golem-like monster—it was quite docile.

“As expected from a 9th-tier dungeon. These creatures are wild.”

Even monsters who wouldn’t attack Ara directly still picked fights with her, despite her maximum level of affinity.

After disciplining them one by one, I began to suspect that Ara’s physical strength might have already reached the level of a level 8 awakener.

But we still hadn’t encountered a gnoll.

At least we weren’t as tense as we had been at the beginning.

Having repeatedly realized that Ara was invincible, it felt more like a leisurely stroll.

“Shall I take out Purr or Woofy and wander around with them?”

“Then you won’t be able to put them back, right?”

“… Our Ara is smarter than me.”

Considering the cooldown time of the Master of Gluttony, it was easy to take them out, but hard to put them back.

Awakeners with taming abilities could summon and dismiss their familiars easily, but that wasn’t the case for me.

Ultimately, we’d have to find them directly, and considering our time, we had only 30 minutes left.

We didn’t have to worry much about getting back since we could use a return stone.

“Hmm…?”

Even Ara crossed her arms and started to ponder.

This was still a Seven Deadly Sins dungeon and quite vast, so maybe we had oversimplified things.

‘Let’s think about this.’

According to Ara and Mammon, the boss of wrath, Wrath (Ras), was a lower-level monster.

So, his subordinates, the gnolls, would also be low-tier monsters.

How could such low-tier creatures survive in a place full of these monsters?

“… Underground?”

A sudden thought.

Ara perked up her ears when she heard my murmuring.

“Is it underground?!”

“Oh, no. It just seemed possible. The gnolls are weak, so I thought maybe they went underground to avoid the monsters we’ve encountered.”

This aligned with the rumor that gnolls liked to dig dirt and carve stones.

Although I spoke uncertainly at first, the more I thought about it, the more confident I became.

“It must be underground.”

“As expected, Kyu-seong is a genius!”

Ara immediately began scanning the ground.

The Clairvoyant sees far, but what exactly does Insight do?

Does it allow her to see through things?

“Oooh!”

“Did you find something?”

Ara exclaimed while scanning the ground.

I urgently asked, thinking she’d found something.

“There’s a lot of dirt!”

Just when I thought we wouldn’t find anything, Ara’s eyes sparkled again.

“Oh! I’ll use both at the same time!”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’ll use both the shiny eyes and the ticklish eyes at the same time! Now I understand!”

Shiny eyes? Ticklish eyes?

She probably meant her Clairvoyant and Insight abilities.

It seemed she had just figured out how to use them simultaneously.

Then, as if she had found something, Ara grabbed my hand and pulled me along.

“This way!”

Following her, we came across a cave filled with flowing lava.

Thanks to the lava streaming like a river, the inside was brightly lit.

As we went deeper, despite the bright interior, I felt a bit uneasy.

But Ara continued moving with determination.

“This is it.”

“There’s nothing here?”

Ara arrived at a wall inside the cave.

There was no visible path.

“The space behind here is empty,” she said.

When Ara knocked on the wall, the sound echoed, indicating there was a hollow space behind it.

“So, should we break through?”

“Knock, knock. I’m here!”

Ara suddenly started knocking as if it were the most natural thing to do.

Just as I was thinking how innocently cute she was, an unexpected reply came.

-Keng?

It was a hyena’s cry from the other side of the wall.

How did I know it was a hyena’s cry? I had studied in advance, expecting we might encounter gnolls.

“Knock, knock. I’m a polite Ara.”

-Keng!

Soon, the wall began to crumble slightly, revealing a small hole just large enough for a pair of glowing eyes to peer through.

-Keng?!

“Hello! Is Ras inside?”

Ara waved her hand with a smile.

The gnoll, startled, began to fidget before disappearing.

“Uh…”

I was taken aback by how quickly it all happened.

What now?

But my thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the gnoll returning. This time, it wasn’t alone.

-Keng!

-Keng keng.

“I’m Ara! I’ve come to meet my friend Las!”

As Ara introduced herself naturally, the wall crumbled a little more, revealing the gnolls.

They were small and stout.

Closer to puppies than hyenas, their appearance was striking with spotted fur and bipedal walking.

Their large, bright eyes made them look incredibly cute, like puppies standing on their hind legs.

-Keng!

-Keng keng?

“Just tell Ras that I’m here!”

By the way, Ara, wasn’t your original name Gula? Didn’t you change it?

Will Ras even recognize you?

I was curious but remained quiet.

Meanwhile, the gnolls noticed me and became startled, raising their fur.

-Keng keng!

-Keng!

“This is Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! He’s my dad!”

“Uh, hello?”

Even though I couldn’t communicate with them, I instinctively greeted them.

The gnoll, about the height of my thigh, approached and began sniffing me.

-Keng!

“You smell delicious,” Ara said, seemingly translating for them.

Hearing that, something clicked in my mind, and I started rummaging through my backpack.

“Here, have this. I’m not a bad person.”

I handed them some dog chews I had prepared in bulk for our dog.

I gave one to each of the two gnolls and to Ara. Ara immediately started chewing hers with a happy expression.

-Keng?

-Keng keng.

The gnolls were still a bit cautious, but after watching Ara enjoy her chew, they began to sniff theirs curiously.

Unable to resist, they soon started chewing on the dog treats right where they stood.

Crunch, crunch.

Munch, munch.

The three of them sat in a circle, happily chewing on the treats.

It made me wonder if this was really okay.

Since the chews weren’t the extra-large kind for dogs, they were gone in no time.

Seeing the gnolls looking disappointed, Ara shouted, “There’s still plenty! How about we all share some?”

-Keng!

-Keng! Keng!

The gnolls’ faces brightened up immediately.

The simple creatures then stepped forward, as if beckoning us to follow them.

-Keng!

Was this really okay…?

The gnolls seemed somewhat concerned themselves.

***

Following the gnolls, I realized we were descending into a tunnel.

Before moving on, they made sure to neatly seal the entrance behind us.

“Wow.”

The tunnel going down was rough but sturdy.

Unknown glowing substances placed along the walls lit the way.

-Keng keng.

“We’re almost there.”

The gnoll’s rapidly wagging tail was adorable. It seemed excited, probably anticipating more dog treats when we reached the bottom.

You innocent creatures, what would you have done if I were a bad person?

Finally, when we reached the end of the tunnel, we were met with a vast hollow chamber.

There, we saw some crude structures that resembled a makeshift village.

-Keng?

-Keng keng keng!

-Ke keng!!

There were quite a few gnolls gathered.

When they saw me and Ara, they were startled, raising their fur in alarm.

“Don’t worry! I’m a friend of Ras!”

Ara puffed out her chest and confidently stepped forward, shouting.

Despite her reassurance, the commotion didn’t settle down, so the gnolls who had come with us started explaining something to them.

This seems like another good time for…

I quickly grabbed more dog treats from my backpack.

I took a handful and scattered them among the gnolls.

-Keng?!

-Ke keng.

The gnolls, with their keen sense of smell, quickly focused on the falling treats.

The two gnolls who had tasted the treats earlier each grabbed one and began to chew hurriedly.

“This is a dog treat! It’s delicious! It’s a gift we brought as friends of Ras!”

Ara grabbed a treat and started chewing on it as if to demonstrate.

Seeing her, the gnolls, who had been on guard, cautiously picked up the treats and sat down to chew.

-Ke keng?!

-Keng! Keng!

Their eyes widened in surprise after tasting the treats.

Even though they were monsters, their expressions were so full of emotion that I couldn’t help but stifle a laugh.

‘They’re cute.’

Lower-tier monsters were cute, both in appearance and behavior.

I wondered if other lower-tier monsters acted like this too.

As the gnolls continued their dog treat party, I realized we were running out of time, so I quickly checked my watch.

‘Only 10 minutes left…?’

We had just 10 minutes remaining.

It seemed like we’d have to just say our hellos this time and come back later.

It was disappointing, but I had already prepared a Plan B, so I wasn’t too worried.

As I watched the gnolls munching on their treats, I started counting them for no real reason.

Of course, these weren’t all the gnolls in the village, but it was something to do while we waited.

There were about 30 gnolls gathered here, which seemed to match the size of the hollow.

Seeing such a small number compared to goblins was both curious and surprising.

As the dog treat party came to an end, the gnolls finally seemed satisfied.

-Keng keng.

-Ke keng?

“We’re friends of Ras, and these are gifts we brought for him.”

-Ke keng keng!

The gnolls were overjoyed.

They were so simple.

It seemed like if I just offered them more treats, they’d follow me anywhere, which made me a bit worried.

What would they do if a stranger offered them treats? They should be saying “No!”

I’d have to take them and give them a proper lesson.

‘Wait, am I the one who should be saying this?!’

As I was pondering this seriously, a few gnolls approached and started sniffing us.

They sniffed around and even licked my hand like puppies.

-Keng?

-Ke keng.

Without thinking, I petted their heads, and their tails began spinning like propellers.

These cute little things!

I can’t resist. I’m going to take all of you with me!

-Keng!

“Oh, is Ras inside?”

-Ke keng, keng!

“Are you going to guide us? Let’s follow them, Kyu-seong Kyu-seong!”

Finally, we might get to meet him.

The boss of this dungeon, Wrath Ras.

Even though he seemed to be hiding out in a place like this, he must still be the strongest monster as the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins.

‘I’m feeling a bit nervous.’

Although I’d seen plenty of cute gnolls, I wondered what Ras would be like.

Surely, as the leader and one of the Seven Deadly Sins, he couldn’t be as cute as these gnolls… right?

Following the group of gnolls, we arrived at another large chamber on the opposite side of the hollow.

This one also had a small village, and the gnolls there seemed wary of our sudden visit.

-Keng! Ke keng!

-Keng keng!

The gnolls on both sides began conversing with each other.

And then…

“Who dares to summon me?”

A commanding voice echoed through the chamber.

The weight of the voice made it clear that this was Wrath Ras.

I eagerly and nervously awaited the appearance of the voice’s owner.

At the same time, I tilted my head in confusion.

“Huh?”

“Who are you? Have you come to see me?”

A cute little dog stood on two legs before me.

Patron 66

It had been three days since Alon had personally gone to verify the news of an incident in Al-Kamae.

As he began traveling again with the merchants regularly heading to the desert city, like before, Alon let out a deep sigh under the sweltering heat.

“Count, could you just use it once?”

“If I use it wrong, it could freeze everything solid.”

“Freezing sounds better than becoming a roasted corpse…”

“Still, no.”

Listening to Evan’s complaints about not wanting to get roasted, Alon gazed at the blazing sun and reflected on the events of a few days ago.

‘What happened to Al-Kamae?’

Of course, since he hadn’t seen a body, he couldn’t be sure what had happened to Al-Kamae. Yet, the reason he suspected something had gone wrong was because of the artifact he had taken with him.

He looked at the badge in his hand.

The badge, instead of shining gold, was a dull gray.

In game terms, this artifact could be looted after dealing with Al-Kamae in the mid-game stage of Psychedelia.

‘The Symbol of the Innocent… I didn’t expect to get it this early.’

Though the badge had no function at the moment, it was known for having impressive stats when appraised, especially for an item you normally obtain mid-game.

Just like the ring Alon had received from Heinkel but hadn’t used yet.

‘On my way to Laxas to unlock the ring, I should stop by the Labyrinth City for an appraisal.’

At any rate, this Symbol of the Innocent was something Al-Kamae had cherished deeply and had cast a binding spell on so no one could steal it.

Simply put, if Al-Kamae wasn’t dead, no one else could have taken the badge.

However, since the badge was now in Alon’s hand with no sign of magical interference, he was convinced something had happened to Al-Kamae.

Thus, that night, Alon had thoroughly raided Al-Kamae’s mansion.

….

He glanced at the treasure piled up in the back of the carriage and smiled faintly beneath his expressionless face.

And that wasn’t all.

His waist pouch was now filled with the highest-grade magic potions he had used up in the recent battle against Kailas.

Everything was looted from Al-Kamae’s mansion.

‘The treasure wasn’t as abundant as I’d hoped, but—’

Since this world wasn’t one where money simply popped out of the ground, Alon was more than satisfied with the treasure now loaded in the carriage.

To him, money was always the right answer.

How long had they been traveling this way?

“Everyone, halt!”

Ding-ding!

At the shout from up ahead, the caravans crossing the desert came to a sudden stop, and a bell rang out.

It was the signal from the merchant group to set up camp, and seeing that the sun was setting, Alon stepped out of the carriage.

Not long after they started preparing the camp…

“Ah, Count, have you been comfortable today?”

Unlike the leader of the previous Golden-Haired merchant group, this time, a rather slim merchant leader approached Alon with a bow.

“Thanks to you.”

“Oh no, not at all~”

The merchant leader, who kept bowing even though Alon hadn’t done much, smiled with a characteristic capitalistic grin and handed Alon something.

“…What’s this?”

“Ah, these are products we handle in our group. Over here is wine from the Komur estate, and this side contains food products we get from the Kalmian estate.”

“I see.”

“We brought it hoping you’d give it a try.”

Alon lightly nodded at the exaggerated courtesy, with the merchant leader bowing so deeply that his face nearly touched the ground.

“I’ll enjoy it.”

“Yes, sir! Please rest well.”

As Alon watched the merchant leader bow several times before disappearing, he shrugged lightly.

In the past, he wasn’t treated as a proper noble, but nowadays, he received quite lavish treatment wherever he went.

This was largely due to his growing reputation and the rumor that he was the head of the most influential faction in the Asteria Kingdom.

As a result, anyone who had any awareness of the kingdom’s political situation tried their best to make a good impression on Alon, turning into sycophants the moment they saw him.

‘Well, that’s only true for people moving near the Asteria Kingdom, though.’

As Alon shrugged his shoulders, looking at the gift the merchant leader had offered in hopes of securing a new business route…

“Oh really?”

“Of course.”

He heard Evan’s voice coming from somewhere, chatting with a woman after they had finished setting up camp.

“Wow, that’s amazing.”

“Haha, well, it’s not that hard.”

As Alon glanced at the woman enthusiastically responding to whatever Evan was boasting about, he soon realized her identity.

‘The merchant leader’s daughter, huh.’

He made a strange expression as he watched the two.

‘It seems there are more women around Evan these days.’

Alon had a pretty good guess as to why so many women were suddenly flocking around Evan.

It was because of his own fame.

Being known as the only knight of the famous Count Palatio, most women showed interest in Evan, approaching him with admiration.

Though Alon felt a bit of a strange emotion at what seemed like a situation where the bear does the work and the peddler makes the money, he soon shrugged it off.

‘Well, after all the trouble he went through, I suppose it’s fine.’

Watching Evan putting on an exaggerated, boisterous performance, Alon couldn’t help but think once again.

‘I wonder if Evan realizes. The merchant leader’s daughter is looking at him with hawk eyes.’

Since there was no need to spoil the mood, Alon sat in front of the campfire to avoid the increasingly chilly evening.

“Tasty.”

The sweet potato that Evan had prepared was perfectly cooked.

***

A week and a day later, at early dawn, Alon finally saw the colony’s silhouette again after nearly a year.

‘Hmm~’

Though the colony didn’t look much different from before, its unique architecture still appeared fresh and new to Alon.

After a brief exchange of greetings with the merchant leader, Alon turned around when…

“Master!”

He felt the familiar sensation of Seolrang throwing herself at him, hugging him tightly.

“Hello!”

Seolrang, clinging to him like glue, greeted him cheerfully.

“It’s been a while.”

“It has!”

As Alon watched Seolrang wagging her tail excitedly…

“Look at that. Isn’t that the Golden Flash?”

“Yeah, it is.”

“Who’s that with her?”

“Looks like Count Palatio.”

“No way. The Mad Dog is actually being so friendly with someone like that?”

He noticed faint murmurs coming from the surrounding area.

“Seolrang.”

“Yeah!”

“Let go of me for now.”

“Got it!”

At Alon’s words, Seolrang immediately released her grip around his waist and placed her feet on the ground.

“Did I do well?”

“You did.”

Watching Seolrang wag her tail happily after receiving his praise, Alon suddenly realized how quiet it had become around them.

As he glanced around, he saw that everyone at the southern gate of the colony was staring at him with astonished expressions.

Even the merchant leader and his daughter, who had just greeted him, were standing there with their mouths wide open.

‘…Why is everyone so shocked?’

Feeling slightly puzzled by the overly silent atmosphere, Alon scanned his surroundings with a faint look of confusion.

Everyone looked as if they were witnessing something unreal, their faces frozen in disbelief.

Seeing their reactions, Alon himself became confused.

Hadn’t he received this same kind of excitement from Seolrang a year ago?

But now, the difference in their gazes was stark, leaving Alon bewildered for a moment.

“Hmph-hmph—”

Clearing his throat awkwardly to dispel the sudden discomfort, Alon opened his mouth and said, “Seolrang, I’d like to go straight to the ruins. Is that possible?”

“Of course it’s possible!”

With Seolrang’s words, Alon immediately boarded the carriage. Even as he climbed into the carriage and they set off toward the ruins, the looks of astonishment didn’t leave the faces of the onlookers.

***

They were on the road to the forgotten ruins, using the carriage Seolrang had prepared. Just like last time, they were traveling under the protection of the Golden Mane tribe, but Alon could sense something had subtly changed.

‘Something feels different.’

Alon glanced at Seolrang. Seolrang herself hadn’t changed much from a year ago. The only noticeable difference was that her brilliantly golden hair had grown longer, now reaching down near her tailbone. But aside from that, she was the same as before.

However, unlike Seolrang, the atmosphere among the Golden Mane tribe members guarding the carriage was distinctly different from a year ago.

‘They seemed more friendly before…’

Of course, their friendliness had always been directed toward Seolrang rather than Alon, but now there was none of the lighthearted or welcoming behavior he remembered from before. Instead, they moved in silence, thoroughly watching their surroundings without a word.

Recalling what had happened to Seolrang a year ago, Alon nodded in understanding.

‘I guess the betrayal back then hit them harder than I thought.’

As Alon was thinking that he should be more considerate to Seolrang to keep her from being affected by such things, Seolrang suddenly spoke up.

“Ah, Master!”

She called out as if she had just remembered something, and Alon responded.

“What is it?”

“Can I ask you a favor!?”

Alon was a little taken aback by the sudden request but nodded soon after.

“As long as it’s something I can do, of course.”

After all, it was largely thanks to Seolrang that they were traveling to the ruins so comfortably, and he had been thinking he should treat her better, so he nodded his head. Seolrang beamed brightly, pulled out a piece of paper from her bag, and handed it to Alon.

Then, as she reached her hand out the window of the carriage, an artifact pen was placed in her hand, as if on cue.

Handing the pen over to Alon, Seolrang said,

“Here, sign it.”

“Sign…?”

“Yep!”

Nodding eagerly, she looked at him with a very expectant expression. She nodded so enthusiastically that her long hair, which reached her tailbone, swayed through the air.

At this, Alon couldn’t help but think,

‘Is she asking me to co-sign for something…?’

Feeling a bit tense without realizing it, Alon looked down at the paper. The document already had several complicated sections filled in.

With a puzzled expression, Alon glanced at the top of the document.

…A marriage registration form?

“Sign it!”

Alon was left speechless.
