Round 179

Using the power of the Lord of Gluttony, I quickly entered the dungeon and gathered the ingredients. Seon-ah had apparently gone to the Blue Forest by now, as she wasn’t in the village.

“This, this, and this too.”

‘Ah! If only I had some soybean paste, soy sauce, and red pepper paste!’

Regretfully, I made sure to gather all the ingredients I had on hand.

Afterward, I went outside again, received a message, and went to find Jae-seong, who was waiting in the kitchen.

“Jae-seong! Jae-seong!”

“Hi, Ara! Are you okay? How’s Kyu-seong? Is he hurt anywhere?”

Jae-seong was concerned about us, hearing the news of the attack.

“Yeah, we’re fine. Thanks to Ara, we made it through safely.”

“I caught the suspicious person!”

Ara spread her arms wide, boasting, and Jae-seong picked her up with a grin.

“That’s a relief. Our Ara did a great job.”

“Is the cooking ready?”

“Yeah, I prepared it before you came.”

“Okay, good.”

Besides Jae-seong, there was no one in the kitchen. I wondered if it would really be possible for just the two of us to cook for nearly 30 people.

“Of course it’s possible.”

When I expressed my concern, Jae-seong confidently assured me there was no problem. His eyes widened in amazement as I started taking out the ingredients.

“What is this?”

“Seafood.”

There were oysters, clams, abalone, shrimp, half a mackerel the size of my arm, and a giant cutlassfish.

“Is this enough for 30 people?”

“It’s more than enough. If we make the mackerel into bite-sized pieces, and the cutlassfish will yield even more than 30 portions.”

Jae-seong’s face lit up as he examined the seafood, clearly intrigued. It seemed his curiosity had been thoroughly piqued. We then started cooking together. Even Ara helped this time, and her strength surprisingly came in handy.

Dum-dum-dum.

Ara casually moved the giant pot full of soup, and she fetched ingredients back and forth as we requested them.

Chop-chop-chop!

Sizzle!

The sound of chopping, flames, and food frying in oil filled the kitchen. In less than 30 minutes, most of the dishes were nearly complete.

“No way, did we really finish this quickly?”

“As long as you know the techniques, the quantity of food isn’t a problem.”

“R-really?”

Although I had gained some confidence in cooking recently, I realized I still had a long way to go. The finished dishes were served with the help of the headquarters staff.

“Thank you for waiting.”

The conference room was silent, with everyone quietly chatting among themselves, but as the food arrived, they all straightened up.

“The smell…!”

Some people were already excited, as they had tasted my cooking before. Especially Hanul and Jeong So-yeon, who had eaten my food before coming here, were now looking at me—or rather, the food—with eager eyes.

“The first dish is ready.”

Jae-seong presented the same dish to everyone gathered in the conference room. He felt a bit disappointed that he couldn’t serve a full course meal, but I thought this was more than enough. A proper course meal required pre-prepared sauces, prepped ingredients, and many chefs working together, so considering that we did everything from scratch, this wasn’t bad.

“This is a light bread, perfect for starting a meal. It’s made with plants from the dungeon, and there’s a bisque sauce made from crustaceans to dip it in. Next to it is a bite-sized tart made from finely chopped small seafood and crop items.”

As Jae-seong fluently explained the dishes, the reactions varied. Some people started eating before he finished, some were too busy checking the item effects to listen, and a few quietly listened to his explanation. Once he finished, everyone began to eat.

“Hmm?!”

“Wow.”

“Yum!”

Soon after tasting the food, people began exchanging glances, as if questioning whether this was real.

“No way, how can it taste this good…?”

“The item’s effects are astonishing, but this flavor…!”

The representatives from the European Union, who were tasting my food for the first time, looked back and forth between the dishes and me, their faces filled with bewilderment.

“The next dish is mackerel ceviche. It’s served with a bisque sauce made from crustaceans and includes items like onions, bell peppers, garlic, tomatoes, lettuce, and ambergris.”

The next dish featured lightly smoked mackerel served with vegetables. Once again, the European Union members were surprised by the item’s effects and amazed by the taste.

“Can I have more of this?”

“I’ve never had anything like this before!”

Their expressions of admiration made me feel rather pleased.

“The next dish is roasted potatoes with sweet potato puree, accompanied by lightly blanched Yggdrasil mushrooms, which are served as a garnish in bite-sized pieces.”

The roasted potatoes were cut into crescent shapes, just large enough for two bites, and were accompanied by a sauce made from sweet potatoes and Yggdrasil mushrooms. Although a simple dish, its simplicity allowed the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine.

“…I can’t believe it.”

“I’ve been to many restaurants and tried even more dishes, but this is the first time I’ve had food like this. I’m glad I came to Korea.”

By this point, they seemed to have forgotten all about the item’s effects, instead becoming increasingly captivated by the food itself.

“The next dish is grilled cutlassfish. This fish also comes from the dungeon. We’ve topped it with small shrimp from the dungeon and perfectly cooked carrot items. The sauce is made from itemized vegetables, and it’s best enjoyed when you eat the cutlassfish, shrimp, and carrots together.”

Finally, it was time for the main course. Considering it was a quickly prepared course meal, it turned out quite well.

The enticing aroma of the main dish caused a stir in the conference room even before the food was served. As the guests took their first bites of the cutlassfish, they seemed to sit in a daze, almost as if they were dreaming. Everyone quietly wielded their forks and knives, with only the clinking of cutlery breaking the silence, until suddenly, someone exclaimed:

“Huh?! Where did it go? Where’s my food?!”

The person stared at their empty plate in disbelief, as if they hadn’t just devoured the entire dish. Moments ago, they had even licked the plate clean.

Amusingly, others had similar reactions. They hadn’t even realized when they finished their food, and then, noticing the behavior of those around them, their faces turned red.

Lick.

Some slower eaters licked their plates clean, only to wonder where their food had gone. Those who had finished earlier realized they had done the same and were left speechless, embarrassed by their own actions.

‘Well, it happens.’

I had experienced it myself, after all.

After successfully finishing the main course, we moved on to dessert. The dessert consisted of strawberry and layla sorbet, along with soy milk pudding topped with fairy honey.

“This is it!”

Ryu Wang-jin expressed his delight at the soy milk pudding, which he hadn’t tasted in a long time. Despite his love for bizarre foods, he had completely polished off all the dishes served so far.

“How was the meal?”

“Ahem!”

“It was… exceptional.”

The European Union members seemed to finally regain their composure, struggling to maintain their dignity. But having already seen their unguarded moments, we looked at them with sly smiles.

“As you’ve tasted, my items aren’t valuable simply because they are items. Those who have tried my food will go to great lengths to get it, even if it isn’t an item.”

The European Union members were left speechless.

They probably all agreed internally.

“So, if you want my items, we’ll need to adjust the shares a bit…”

“We’ll need to discuss this a little. It’s difficult at the moment, but could you give us two days?”

“Of course.”

It wasn’t a flat-out refusal, so it seemed they were already half-persuaded. After everyone finished eating, the meeting resumed briefly. Those on my side were passionately advocating for more shares, insisting that they needed to secure more immediately due to the quality of my food.

In the end, I succeeded in making everyone fall in love with my dishes, just as I had planned, and I thanked Jae-seong for his help.

“Thanks to you, everything went well.”

“Brother.”

“Hmm?”

“I’ve been meaning to tell you something.”

I tilted my head in curiosity at Jae-seong’s serious expression.

“What is it?”

“I’m thinking about opening my own restaurant soon.”

“Oh, wow! Already?”

“Yeah, I’ve already mentioned it to Junichi-san.”

It’s already been quite a while since Jae-seong went to Japan for work and study. But he hasn’t even been there for a full year, and he’s already planning to open his own restaurant… Impressive!

Thinking that, I asked, “Don’t worry about money. I’ll help you out. But where in Japan are you planning to open the restaurant?”

“Huh? Why would I open it in Japan?”

“Oh, are you coming back to Korea? Then where are you planning to open it?”

“At your place, Brother.”

“?”

“…?”

What? Did I hear that right?

As I stood there in shock, Ara cheered, “Is Jae-seong coming too? Seon-ah is already staying at our house!”

“Oh, really? What’s Seon-ah up to?”

“Seon-ah is studying hard! She wants to become a veterinarian!”

“Wow, I didn’t know that. Seon-ah’s working hard too. I should hurry and open my own place and work hard as well.”

Wait a minute!

We need to get something straight here!

“You’re planning to open a restaurant at my place?!”

“Well, your ground floor is empty now. Wouldn’t it be perfect for a restaurant?”

“Oh?”

The Infinite Slime Dungeon, which we’ve completely cleared out, now only has a small garden left on the first floor. If Jae-seong opens his restaurant there…

“That could work.”

The basement could be used as storage or living space, and the first floor as a restaurant. It didn’t seem like a bad idea at all. After all, I own the dungeon and the surrounding mountains and land, so we wouldn’t even need to search for or rent a location for the restaurant.

“I’m not planning to start right away, but I’ll start preparing things here slowly.”

“Sounds good. Come by anytime you want. I’ll help you set up the restaurant.”

If necessary, we could even level the land around the dungeon and build a new structure there. There were plenty of options. As we discussed these plans, the meeting gradually came to an end. By then, it was already late at night.

Ara, who had helped with the cooking and then sat next to Jeong So-yeon to enjoy the meal, was now dozing off. Ryu Cheon gently held her and put her to sleep.

“Kyu-seong, the meeting is wrapped up for today. We’ll take care of the remaining details.”

“Thank you for all your hard work, Guildmaster.”

Han Seok-jun waved off my thanks with a smile but then seemed to remember something and turned to me.

“Oh, by the way, the artworks you entrusted to me last time…”

“Oh! Right.”

I had almost forgotten. Sorry about that, Mammon.

“The artist’s name hasn’t been revealed yet, and the works have only just been exhibited, so there hasn’t been much response yet.”

“Ah…”

“But if you keep producing consistently, I’m sure your name will become known. By the way, is the artist’s name still confidential…?”

“I’ll check with them. Is a pseudonym okay?”

“That’s fine. You can let me know if there’s a pen name or something.”

“Alright, I’ll take care of it.”

After saying our goodbyes, I got into the car with the now sound asleep Ara in my arms. Ryu Cheon looked visibly disappointed, so I told her we could meet up again tomorrow or the day after if she had time.

“Mm, Kyu-seong Kyu-seong?”

“Yeah, I’m here, Ara.”

“Are we going home?”

“Yes. You did great today. Are you sleepy?”

“Mmm.”

As I watched Ara doze off again in the passenger seat, I drove us home.

The progression of the Ghost Knight incident is simpler than expected.

Spectral entities surge out from the cracks in the rift.

These entities cause physical damage within the capital.

As seen previously in Meyer’s example, specters are not beings capable of exerting significant influence in the material world.

Even a continental hero like the Knight of Dawncouldn’t suppress them in one go.

So, even with specters flooding in, it’s not that serious. Originally, at least.

However…

“This isn’t an ordinary situation.”

While it may seem simple, it is clearly not a trivial matter.

Noel said in a firm voice while looking up at the sky.

“If the rift has opened to this extent, the entire capital will be within its area of influence.”

“Aren’t you looking a bit too familiar with this?”

Aiden, who knows how this plays out thanks to his original knowledge, naturally understands, but Noel also seems to be somewhat familiar with this situation.

“It’s one of the strategies used during the Allied War.”

After a brief pause, Noel continued. Her gaze was sharp, and for once, a rare sense of hostility—like skin tearing apart—surged from her.

“A common tactic of the Magic Kingdom.”

…With just those words, the reason for Noel’s reaction becomes instantly clear.

The battle that led to the Guardian Duke’s death was also a conflict with the Magic Kingdom. There’s no way she could hold any goodwill.

And it was evident that the hostility wasn’t solely due to that reason.

“Aiden, could you and Stella leave this place as soon as possible?”

Noel spoke earnestly while drawing her sword.

The sight of pure white energy flowing along the blade was vividly clear. It was the same battle-ready stance seen once before, during the encounter with Katia.

In other words, this situation is just as serious as that previous one.

“It’s going to be a rather tough task. To close a rift of this size… I’ll have to do a lot.”

Her voice carried the weight of firm determination, enough to change even Stella’s expression, who had been carrying Aiden.

“Your Grace, are you planning to handle this alone?”

“I need to find and uproot all the ‘roots’ causing the rift.”

The “roots” refer to structures set up by magicians containing the source of their magic.

Without finding and destroying each one, there is no way to close the rift, and only Noel possesses the agility and precision needed here.

“It’s dangerous. Even for you, if things go wrong, you could be seriously injured!”

“Wait, hold on a second—”

“Actually doing it isn’t that hard. Just find them and destroy them.”

“But the rift will soon open fully. If you go in there without knowing where the roots are, the backlash when it opens—”

“Hold on, let me finish—”

“Stella.”

Noel smiled serenely as she interrupted Stella’s concerns.

“The title of knight isn’t meant for running away in times like this, is it?”

“Please, just hear me out for a second—”

“There are civilians over there. We have to protect them.”

“But, Your Grace…!”

Stella desperately called out Noel’s name.

Her eyes swirled with anguish, as if questioning why Noel would choose to bear such burdens alone, willing to sacrifice herself. It was a scene that could be described as heartbreaking. Noel, too, responded with the expression of a knight bound by a noble duty.

“If you understand, leave this place, Stella. Protecting Aiden is the top priority—”

“Can you just listen for once?!”

Then, Aiden’s intense outburst cut into their dialogue, leaving both knights in stunned silence.

Perhaps it was the first time they had seen Aiden shouting with veins popping on his forehead.

“I’m sorry to interrupt your serious conversation, but first—”

Aiden pulled something from his coat as he spoke.

It’s the stake that Stella had been diligently driving into the ground just earlier.

The difference now is that this one is clearly marked, as if it has a specific function, unlike the others.

“There’s something else more important to worry about than just closing the rift, you know?”

“Aiden? What do you mean—”

Noel tilted her head, preparing to ask a question, but before she could finish, divine energy began emanating from Aiden’s body.

The stake Aiden was holding was akin to a detonator switch.

It was designed to trigger the release of supernatural energy stored in other stakes at the desired timing.

As that energy naturally merged into the stake he held, a lance appeared before him.

-System Message-

Granting ‘Divinity’ to the target ‘Wooden Stake.’

The effect of ‘Delayed Release of Divinity’ is activated.

The same type of supernatural energy is applied to all connected objects!

As that message flowed rapidly, colorless flames ignited everywhere.

The stakes that Aiden and Stella had set up throughout the night began to blaze simultaneously.

In those places where the light spread, dark, root-like structures crumbled to ash.

It was the ‘roots’ of the rift that Noel had mentioned.

It was precisely in the locations where Aiden had instructed Stella to plant stakes.

In the original work, the roots of the rift always appeared in fixed positions.

It wasn’t for nothing that they had spent the night running around setting them up.

Noel and Stella fell silent, watching the rift in the night sky gradually close.

Meanwhile, Aiden panted as he tossed the used stake to the ground.

“Wasn’t that a bit too dramatic for something so trivial…?”

“…Aiden.”

“Yes?”

“I was fully prepared to risk my life, you know.”

Noel stared at Aiden with a subtly annoyed expression, and he scratched his cheek awkwardly.

“Well, isn’t it good that you don’t have to anymore?”

“…I suppose so.”

It is true.

But still…

Well.

What’s done is done.

Regardless of Noel’s embarrassment, Aiden had prepared extensively for this very situation.

However, he remained tense, keeping his gaze fixed on the rift.

If things go smoothly, this should be it.

But if that were truly the end, Aiden wouldn’t have gone to such great lengths to be so meticulous.

“Actually, as I mentioned earlier, the real danger starts now.”

“Pardon?”

“This isn’t the main event.”

If you think about it, it’s quite simple.

This world is based on the original ‘game,’ which means it must follow a story structure divided into ‘episodes,’ like Acts and Chapters.

And one essential element of such a structure is:

‘Boss Battle.’

It’s inevitable.

As Aiden thought of this term with a bitter smile, ectoplasm began to coalesce ominously around the rift, just before it fully closed.

‘Wasn’t it the Ghost Knight?’

The event itself was called “Ghost Knight Incident.”

So, it’s only natural that a knight-related enemy appears.

The ectoplasm descended from the sky and solidified into a familiar form: an armored knight.

Aiden took a deep breath and steadied his mind.

It’s only the first event of Act 1, Chapter 1—it shouldn’t be too challenging.

But fighting for his life was still not something he was accustomed to.

‘The resources are:’

Three skill-copy tickets from Noel and one skill-mimic ticket from the prince.

He had already memorized the available skills.

He just needed to copy and use them wisely according to the situation.

If he could manage to use them effectively—

[I am Steel.]

—that was what he thought, until the ectoplasmic knight suddenly spoke.

“…?”

A chill ran down Aiden’s spine.

Unless it’s an extremely powerful entity like the Dawn Knight, it’s impossible for a spectral being to maintain ‘consciousness’ and act like a human.

In other words, the entity before him was unlikely to be one that should appear in Act 1, Chapter 1.

-Something.

Was going terribly wrong.

[I am the Blade—]

And with that declaration, supernatural energy surged around the entity.

Ki.

Pure white.

The exact same kind that Noel wielded.

[I am the Balance.]

The amassed energy then took the form of a single slash.

It was a stance Aiden had seen before, one that Noel had used when she sent a slash toward Katia.

-System Message-

[Skill: Analysis’ recognizes the target.]

[The martial art and technique used by the target match the characteristics of ‘One Sword, One Path,’ which Aiden had copied from Noel.]

[Combat adjustment is applied.]

…Of course.

The martial art used by this ghostly knight was identical to the technique Aiden had copied from Noel.

And as the ghostly knight, who had formed a slash in the air, locked eyes with Aiden, a sense of danger immediately registered.

Divine energy leapt forward to shield him.

Although it was usually enough to ensure survival in most situations, this time felt different.

The actions that followed in the next moment came not from reason but purely from instinct.

-System Message-

[Qi Manipulation: Copying Defense Field.]

[Qi Manipulation: Copying Reinforced Hardening.]

[Qi Manipulation: Copying Rapid Creation.]

Normally, this is a combination of skills Aiden would never use.

Noel’s skills include many that are far more valuable than these.

This was simply a desperate attempt to enhance the shield to block the incoming attack, using up all the available copy tickets.

But.

If he didn’t go this far, he felt a certainty that he would die right here and now.

[Citizens of the Empire, do not fear—]

And that decision proved to be the correct one.

[-For I have arrived.]

At that moment, a white curtain appeared before Aiden’s eyes.

Simultaneously, his body was launched into the air.

By the time he realized it, a slash had already flown right up to him, striking him forcefully.

‘What the…!’

While he couldn’t even perceive the incoming attack, the triple-layered defense field, which he had just reinforced, was shredded like a rag in a single blow.

If he hadn’t used up all the copy tickets just now, he would have undoubtedly been killed…!

‘What on earth…!’

It felt as if he were facing Noel ‘herself.’

And indeed.

The entity wielded the same pure white qi as Noel, employed the same martial art style, and even the power was nearly identical.

Perhaps, in the world, only one person could pull off something like this: Noel.

That is to say.

Except for one other person.

“Teresa?”

In a cracked voice, Noel uttered the name of the Guardian Duke.

Round 178

We hurriedly arrived at the Awakening Headquarters. Upon checking the surroundings, it was clear that news had already spread from somewhere, as a crowd of reporters had gathered.

“It’s the leaders of the Ara Hongryeon!”

“Take pictures, quickly! Before they go inside!”

“Awakener Kang Hanul! Can we ask you just one question, please?”

Fortunately, the headquarters staff came out and started controlling the crowd, allowing us to enter safely.

… ‘I’m getting nervous.’

Seeing the reporters made the gravity of the situation suddenly hit home. This felt like a bolt from the blue on a clear day.

“I’m sorry to have called you here so suddenly. Please, follow me inside.”

Team Leader Kang Kyung-heon, whom I had met once before, guided us.

The Awakening Headquarters had a massive dome-shaped ceiling made of transparent glass, through which fresh sunlight poured in. The modern and sophisticated interior broke any preconceived notions I had about the place.

As expected, we were guided to a conference room. While we were moving, Team Leader Kang was frantically communicating via radio.

“Please, come in.”

As we entered, there were already quite a number of people inside.

First, our guild master and Si-young were there. Nearby were members of Ironblood and Terror. The director was also present, and across from him were several Westerners I had never seen before.

“You’ve arrived.”

An awkward language, yet the meaning was clearly conveyed. Ryu Wang-jin from the Skyscraper Guild spoke while looking at me. Beside him, Ryu Cheon was energetically waving her hand, her face expressionless.

“Ryu Cheon, Ryu Cheon.”

Ara whispered quietly, likely due to the tense atmosphere. As Ara joined in waving her hand, Ryu Cheon, who saw this, grasped her own hand in confusion, unsure of what to do.

A grin spread across my face.

Next, it was Ino Junichi’s turn. He simply smiled at me with all his might. Next to him were some unfamiliar individuals.

The atmosphere was quiet—not desolate, but it felt like the calm after a storm had passed.

“Welcome.”

As we approached Guild Master Han Seok-jun, he greeted us warmly. Si-young also welcomed us, fixing Ara’s hair.

“Is that the person involved in this incident?”

I heard English. However, the meaning was well conveyed, likely because the other person was also using an artifact similar to Ryu Wang-jin’s.

“Yes, this is Awakener Lee Kyu-seong, a member of our guild.”

“Hm.”

When I entered, I hadn’t realized it, but now I saw that it was Michael Rodman.

‘Wow.’

I never thought I’d see such a world-famous star here. I knew he was part of the European Union, but I never imagined he would come to Korea.

“Now that the person involved is here, wouldn’t it be better if the representatives of the other countries left?”

“We’re not strangers. We owe a debt of gratitude to Lee Kyu-seong.”

Ryu Wang-jin scoffed at Michael’s words and didn’t back down.

“Rest assured, we’re just here to make sure you don’t pull any tricks. We’re not here to pick up scraps.”

“Wouldn’t it be better to choose your words more carefully?”

Oh, I take back my earlier comment—the atmosphere isn’t just quiet; it’s bone dry.

Clap.

The director clapped his hands to break the tension. No matter what anyone said, this was still South Korea. If we handed over the initiative too easily, it would be a loss of face.

“Kyu-seong.”

At that moment, the guild master called me softly.

“Yes?”

“In fact, most of the discussions are already over. We just need to finalize the details. The reason we called you here is so you could receive a direct apology and to show you the terms of the deal.”

“Ah, understood.”

As I nodded, Si-young handed me something. It was a document filled with dense writing.

“Ugh.”

My head started spinning. The document was filled with technical terms and complex language that made it hard to understand.

“This is the full document, and here is a summary.”

Si-young handed me another set of papers.

“Oh, now this is readable!”

The summary was simplified so that even a layperson could understand it. The content was roughly as follows:

1. The European Union will apologize to Lee Kyu-seong and provide compensation for psychological damages. Lee Kyu-seong can choose whether the compensation is in the form of money, items, or intangible assets.

2. Lee Kyu-seong will supply his items to the European Union in exchange for acquiring a certain percentage of dungeon shares. This is also decided by Lee Kyu-seong.

3. The Ara Hongryeon and its allied guilds will be granted the right to participate in the raid of the Dungeon of Wrath. However, this is only possible if the European Union abandons its attempt after one try.

4. If Lee Kyu-seong desires, he may personally participate in the dungeon raid. However, safety cannot be guaranteed in such a case.

Even though it was a summary, the content was still quite lengthy. It seemed that the detailed negotiations over specific figures hadn’t been concluded yet.

“Essentially, the first and second points are the main ones. The other two are just for show.”

“Hmm…”

As Si-young mentioned, the third point was meaningless since it was unlikely that the European Union would give up on the raid. The fourth point seemed to be just for show as well, implying that I could participate but would be on my own.

Despite this, no one complained because the first and second points were the core of the deal.

“Is there anything else you’d like to request?”

“No, I think this is sufficient.”

I shook my head in response to Han Seok-jun’s question. Ara, who was next to me, quickly grabbed the summary, wanting to read it herself.

“Lee Kyu-seong, compensation for psychological damages… receiving dungeon shares? Receiving…”

Ara was reading aloud as if she were babbling, which was quite adorable. The way she was so engrossed and serious about it was endearing.

“Hmm… I see.”

Her furrowed brows made me want to smooth them out.

“Have you reviewed it?”

One of the representatives from the European Union, who had been discussing with the headquarters and other guilds, asked us. He spoke fluent Korean.

“Yes, we’ve reviewed it.”

“Are there any additional requests or modifications?”

His tone was very businesslike, giving the impression that he was more concerned with avoiding giving us any leverage than actually apologizing.

‘This is frustrating.’

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if all of this was necessary since I hadn’t really suffered any significant harm. However, seeing that attitude didn’t make me feel any better. After all, things could have gone terribly wrong if Ara wasn’t immune to poison.

“I have a question.”

“Go ahead.”

“It says I can participate in the dungeon raid. Could you explain that part in more detail?”

“Dungeon… raid.”

The representative seemed slightly taken aback, as if he hadn’t expected that question, and then asked me,

“This clause means that you, Lee Kyu-seong, can participate alone. You cannot bring anyone with you.”

“I know. I read what’s written.”

“I’m curious why someone who isn’t a combatant like yourself would be interested in this clause.”

“What? It’s in the contract, so I’m interested. Could you please explain it?”

What’s this? Is he trying to pick a fight?

Even if I don’t actually do the raid, I’m still curious. Why make a fuss about it?

“Just explain it.”

Michael, who was standing nearby, waved his hand dismissively, as if he were annoyed. The person speaking Korean sighed lightly and then explained,

“Well, you can enter the Dungeon of Wrath. We can provide a pass for you later. But again, it’s only for you, and you’re aware that the Dungeon of Wrath is a Grade 9 dungeon, correct?”

“Yes.”

“Since the European Union controls the Dungeon of Wrath, you can enter with the pass, but we won’t be responsible for anything that happens inside.”

“Understood.”

“Also, the supply must come first. If the supply quota is not met, you won’t receive any dungeon shares.”

“Just to clarify, does participating in the dungeon raid affect the shares in any way?”

“…The shares refer to how much capital you’ve invested in the dungeon. Of course, there’s a 30% share just for the raid itself, but the remaining 70% is based on capital investment.”

“I see. So when can I expect the pass?”

As my questions continued, the atmosphere grew tense, as if they were wondering if I was seriously planning to enter the Dungeon of Wrath.

“…We’ll send it to you within a week, but are you really planning to go?”

“It’s more of a keepsake. Who else would have a pass to the Dungeon of Wrath?”

“Haha, yes, exactly. Just having a pass to the Dungeon of Wrath will be quite symbolic. If you wait about three days, it should arrive at your guild.”

The person, now suddenly cheerful, spoke kindly. But inside, I was grinning mischievously.

‘This is going to be a goldmine for my mining workers.’

Once I get inside, I’ll kidnap—no, I mean relocate—everyone. Even if the European Union tries to complain later, what can they do if I just play dumb?

“Hehe.”

A laugh slipped out of me, and the others, thinking I was pleased with the pass, chuckled as well. However, the bundle on my and Ara’s back trembled and stared at me.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, you’re having evil thoughts…!”

Ara said this, but no one paid attention. Instead, the atmosphere in the meeting room shifted, and the proceedings went smoothly.

“Ah, there’s one thing I’d like to request.”

It was Michael speaking.

Wait, were these people really here to apologize to me? They were so brazen that I almost forgot.

“Go ahead,” our guild master responded, and Michael smiled as he spoke.

“Could we possibly check Mr. Lee Kyu-seong’s item now?”

“Ahem!”

Hanul showed his discomfort. The expressions of the others weren’t good either.

“Of course.”

But I didn’t mind at all. In fact, I nodded enthusiastically.

‘Hehehe.’

You dare want to check my items? No way. You’re all going to have to taste my food first. I’ll show you that the value of my items isn’t just in their effects.

‘This will also give me an edge in the negotiations.’

I should also make sure to repay Ryu and Junichi, who came all this way for me, by sending them home with full bellies.

“Kyu-seong, are you planning to cook?”

At that moment, Junichi spoke to me for the first time. When I nodded, he seemed to catch on to my plan and gave a similarly wicked smile.

“That’s perfect! I actually brought Jae-seong with me. He’s waiting in the Awakening Headquarters reception room.”

Nice, Junichi!

I had planned to use the Devourer’s power to bring the ingredients through a portal, so with Jae-seong here, it was just perfect.

“Everyone, do you have some time to spare?”

“Well, we’re free for now.”

“In that case, let me prepare a meal for you. It’s almost time for dinner anyway.”

The European Union representatives responded with indifference, clearly just wanting to get on with checking my item.

But the reaction came from elsewhere.

“Mr. Kyu-seong’s food!”

“Hmm, the food wasn’t bad last time. I wonder if there will be tofu pudding again?”

“We’re free anytime!”

Director Jeon Young-joo, Ryu Wang-jin, and the local guild members all nodded with eager expressions.

Seeing their reactions, I immediately stood up.

“It won’t take long.”

Alright, everyone, get ready. I’ll make sure my food stays on your minds even as you head home.

Patron 56

Prev | TOC I Next

Alon knew quite a bit more about a character named Myaon than the other mercenaries.

This was because Myaon was a companion character that could be recruited into the protagonist’s party in ‘Psychedelia’ after clearing a certain level of the labyrinth.

In the early stages of the game, many players frequently recruited her, even at a low level, as she would join the party at a much higher level.

Alon, having played through several personal events with her, couldn’t help but know her well.

“……”

However, despite this familiarity, Myaon’s suggestion caught him completely off guard, and Alon maintained his silence.

“Got something on your mind?”

Myaon smiled subtly.

Alon, who was staring at her face, which remained radiant despite the scars, slowly asked back, “Suddenly…?”

“Suddenly? This is already our third time meeting.”

Myaon, her cat-like ears twitching, continued, “By now, we’ve figured each other out, haven’t we? I know you’re strong.”

“Ah.”

Alon let out a small sigh at her words, finally breaking free from his halted thoughts.

He could now guess why she was making such a proposal.

He remembered that Myaon’s tribe had a tradition of revering the strong.

Though it was a distant memory and not entirely clear, he recalled that her tribe held a strong sense of admiration for those more powerful than themselves.

‘Worshipping strength… They feel a profound attraction to those stronger than them.’

Alon looked at the numerous scars scattered across Myaon’s body, almost like the marks of her tribe, and spoke, “Sorry, but I have to decline.”

“Huh?”

Myaon’s expression showed slight disappointment at his words.

However, it wasn’t long before she let out a sigh, as if it were unbelievable that she had been showing such a face just moments before.

“Well, nothing I can do about it then. I was really thrilled when I got overpowered in one move…”

Her tone was full of disappointment, but her expression resembled that of a saleswoman who had just failed to close a deal.

Watching her, Alon thought to himself again.

‘I knew that the way beastfolk and humans think is clearly different, but this part… is really something else.’

As Alon was thinking, Myaon spoke up again, “Well, still, let me know if you change your mind. I’m pretty charming, you know?”

Like a persistent salesperson, she said her piece and left.

As Alon stared blankly at her retreating figure, he suddenly heard Rine’s voice, who had been silent until now.

“Shall I take care of it, Sir?”

“…Huh? No need for that.”

“She spoke rudely to you, Sir.”

Rine, who hadn’t taken her eyes off Myaon as she walked away, uttered this chilling statement.

Alon pressed his lips together tightly.

“No… you’re not thinking of killing her just because of a few words, right?”

Alon, realizing that there was someone even more unusual than Myaon nearby, quickly responded, “There’s no need for that. She didn’t actually cause any harm.”

“Yes, Sir.”

Rine nodded immediately and shifted her gaze elsewhere.

Alon felt a strange sensation.

‘Something feels off.’

He tilted his head, feeling that the way Rine treated him was a bit too excessive compared to how others, like Deus and Seolrang, treated him.

Just then—

“Break’s over! Everyone, move out!”

Argonia’s sharp voice announced the end of their rest, and Alon, halting his thoughts, got up and started walking into the darkness once more.

***

About a day passed.

The expedition to exterminate the foreign invader had spent a night in the labyrinth, a place akin to the abyss, and continued to move forward.

They had now reached the 4th layer.

‘As expected, it’s really different from the game.’

Alon clicked his tongue as they had only reached the 4th layer despite traveling for more than an entire day.

Considering the large group’s slow pace and inability to take shortcuts, the reality of traversing the labyrinth was starkly different from the game.

In the game, simply defeating certain monsters would naturally lead to the next level, but here, in the depths of the abyss, monsters appeared relentlessly, and just dealing with them had taken more than a day.

Alon once again made up his mind never to enter the labyrinth again as he looked around.

The mercenaries, who had ventured into the labyrinth several times before, were familiar with the abyss-like darkness, even making occasional jokes, but for Alon, this place had already become somewhere he never wanted to return to.

‘There is a good item for wizards around the 40th floor of the labyrinth, though…’

For a moment, he recalled some information from the game, but soon shook his head, deciding to give up on the item altogether.

It had taken over a day just to descend to the 5th floor, so what about reaching the 40th?

It was easy to realize that it would take an incredibly long time.

After some time passed, a voice came from ahead.

“We’re almost at the 5th floor.”

Alon, who had been walking absentmindedly, turned his gaze toward the mercenary’s voice and saw a door in the distance, glowing as if it were the exit of the labyrinth.

Not long after, they finally arrived at the 5th floor.

“…The 5th floor, huh,” Alon muttered expressionlessly.

But that was just his exterior. Inside, he was genuinely surprised.

He could see the sky as if they were no longer inside the labyrinth.

And it wasn’t just any sky—it was a bright, clear sky.

Looking at the blue grasslands and the crumbling ruins scattered below, Alon thought to himself.

‘…This is completely different from what I saw in the game.’

Although the scenery was similar to what he had seen in the game, the feeling upon reaching this place was somehow different.

In the game, the 5th floor had been more like a save point for resting, but here, it was truly peaceful.

Alon felt a brief moment of calm, as if the heavy burden on his heart was being lifted.

However, it didn’t last long.

“All right, take a short break and then start preparing immediately,” Argonia’s voice reminded Alon of their purpose, and he slowly began reviewing their plan.

‘Let’s hope the operation proceeds according to plan…’

***

Right after the Outer God extermination squad arrived at the 5th floor, the mercenaries, who had taken a brief rest, soon got up and began preparations in earnest, just as Alon had instructed.

And then—

“Click.”

Watching their precise movements, Maverick clicked his tongue and shifted his gaze.

He looked at Alon.

To be honest, Maverick still didn’t like him very much.

No matter how he looked at it, Alon didn’t seem particularly strong.

‘What’s so great about a guy who’s already panting just from walking through the labyrinth?’

Maverick recalled the conversation Argonia and Himan had a few days ago.

No, to be more accurate, he recalled their expressions at the time.

They had all been drenched in cold sweat, silently holding their breath.

‘What on earth did they see?’

Maverick had looked at Alon several times but still couldn’t find anything special about him, so he turned away, his face showing clear confusion.

And then—

“Huh?”

At that moment, he felt something strange.

Something so trivial.

But mixed with a sense of déjà vu.

As Maverick pondered what it might be, he turned his gaze once more and realized what was causing the déjà vu.

It was the noise.

The bustling noise his subordinates had been making as they prepared Alon’s plan—none of it could be heard.

It was as if time had stopped.

Sensing something was wrong, Maverick looked at the mercenaries and soon identified the source of his unsettling feeling.

It was the mercenaries.

Just moments ago, they had been chatting and joking as they carried out their tasks, but now, they were all frozen.

As if they were dolls.

They had stopped in the exact positions they were in while preparing for the plan.

Motionless.

As Maverick, feeling increasingly uneasy, tried to speak—

The mercenaries’ bodies began to collapse.

Like slow-motion.

Starting from their legs like pillars, the mercenaries’ bodies slumped diagonally to the ground.

Splaashhh!

Red bloodstains soaked the ruins and the green plains.

And then—

“!”

Maverick, his eyes wide open in shock at the sudden turn of events, saw it.

Standing so nonchalantly before the fallen mercenaries was a goblin.

He felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness as he locked eyes with the goblin, who was emotionlessly staring back at him. In that moment, he realized several things.

The goblin in front of him had killed his subordinates.

The goblin in front of him was the foreign entity that this expedition was supposed to exterminate.

And that he needed to draw his sword immediately.

However, despite being aware of all of this—

He couldn’t take any action.

He couldn’t scream out in rage.

He couldn’t draw his sword.

He couldn’t even call for reinforcements.

He couldn’t do anything.

Even though the figure before him was a goblin—one of the thousands he had slain before—

Instinctively, he knew that ‘this’ was no ordinary goblin.

The gaze of the goblin—or rather, ‘it’—met Maverick’s.

In an instant, Maverick understood the emotion in that gaze.

It was one of boundless boredom and arrogance.

It was filled with ennui, as though indifferent to everything happening.

And there was arrogance, as though looking down on everything from above.

At the end of those emotions—

“Who gave you permission to meet my eyes?”

It pronounced its judgment.

A finger was raised.

Slowly.

But surely.

It pointed directly at Maverick, as if marking his approaching death with precision.

And then—

Just as Maverick, overcome with terror, closed his eyes as he saw the finger begin to move—

“Freeze.”

A cold, emotionless voice echoed.

Crack-crack-crack-!!!

The earth froze over.

Ice crystals, spreading like greedy fingers, surged over the grass in waves, freezing everything in their path.

“Crystal.”

Crack-crunch~!

A chilling sound, like something being squeezed and crushed, reverberated through the air.

“Get a grip.”

Hearing that voice, Maverick opened his eyes and saw—

A man standing with his back to him, wearing a black coat fluttering in the freezing wind. From his left hand, a pale gray magical energy flowed like smoke.

Before him, the goblin—or rather, ‘it’—was trapped within a crescent-shaped ice crystal, its eyebrows slightly twitching as it faced off against the man.

It was Count Palatio.

Maverick, as if entranced, could only stare blankly at that back.

Round 177

Prev | TOC | Next

“Wow, driving in Seoul is really tough.”

I barely managed to arrive at Ara Hongryeon.

The traffic jams and complicated road conditions were overwhelming, but I made it safely.

‘Thanks to my expensive car… I was able to get some courtesy driving.’

Is this why everyone admires expensive cars?!

Anyway, I contacted Hanul after arriving, and he immediately came down to the first floor of the building.

“Hahaha! How have you been, Kyu-seong! And nice to see you too, my successor, Ara!”

“Have you been well, Hanul!”

As soon as we met, Hanul put Ara on his shoulders. Seeing him, I smiled and greeted him, then asked,

“Have you been very busy lately?”

“Haa, it’s all because of you, Kyu-seong.”

“Uh…”

“Hahaha! Just kidding, just kidding! But it’s actually true. Thanks to your crops, the dungeon raid success rate has skyrocketed. We’ve been breaking records for months, holding the top spot in the country.”

“Wow, that’s amazing!”

We exchanged some light conversation as we headed inside. Familiar faces greeted us as we passed by.

“Oh, Ara!”

“Ara, do you want some candy?”

“Mr. Kyu-seong! Thanks to you, work has been so much more enjoyable lately! We’re really grateful to have you with our guild!”

After greeting everyone, we went up to the meeting room, where Young-seong and Jeong So-yeon were already waiting.

“Welcome, Kyu-seong. Hello, Ara!”

“Welcome.”

We greeted each other and took our seats.

Come to think of it, I still hadn’t heard why they called me here.

“How long has it been, Kyu-seong?”

“It’s been a while, Brother. I saw Si-young a few days ago during the attack incident, though.”

“How are you doing?”

“I’m fine. Ara ended it so quickly.”

At the mention of her name, Ara puffed out her chest proudly, almost reaching the ceiling.

“By the way, why did you call me here?”

“Huh? Didn’t you hear?”

Young-seong squinted his eyes and glared at Hanul.

Hanul awkwardly responded,

“Didn’t I tell you?”

“……”

“Guess not.”

“……”

“So why did you call me here?”

I heard it was to discuss the aftermath of the attack incident.

“Today, some high-ranking officials from the European Union are visiting Korea. Or rather, they should have arrived by now. Our guild master has already gone to meet them.”

“Oh.”

I just nodded my head.

But the looks on everyone’s faces became peculiar.

“‘Oh’ is not enough, Kyu-seong.”

“That’s right. This could be an event significant enough to be written in our country’s history books.”

“Huh?”

In the history books?

The magnitude of the situation hadn’t really hit me until that moment.

“Is it really all because of me? I mean, they’re coming for other reasons too, right?”

“It’s because of you. Well, not entirely because of you, but you’re the main reason.”

“Oh.”

“…You still don’t seem to get it.”

“No, I understand!”

The three of them looked at me with doubtful eyes.

Feeling awkward, I scratched my head, and Ara asked me,

“Did Kyu-seong Kyu-seong do something wrong?”

“Huh? No, I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong is amazing! He did nothing wrong!”

The atmosphere lightened as everyone chuckled.

Soon, Brother Young-seong began explaining again,

“Anyway, the guild master and Si-young have gone to the Awakening Headquarters, so we’ll get a call soon. Of course, you don’t need to go. If they want to apologize, they should come to you, right?”

“Well, that’s true.”

I didn’t think there was anything to apologize for, but it seemed like the people around me were more concerned and worried than I was, as the person involved in the incident.

“And there’s going to be some discussion regarding Wrath because of this incident. You mentioned you were interested, right?”

“Yes. I am interested.”

Not just in Wrath, but in all the Seven Deadly Sins. I wondered if I could somehow manage to bring in the harmless ones.

‘I should ask Ara and Mammon later about the other Seven Deadly Sins.’

In truth, I brought Mammon along by chance, so I hadn’t been particularly interested in the Seven Deadly Sins before then.

However, after Mammon became my familiar, with the related quests and hearing about Wrath’s Ras, my interest grew significantly.

Currently, three dungeons related to the Seven Deadly Sins have been revealed: Wrath, Greed, and Lust.

Greed is already dealt with, so only Wrath and Lust remain, but just by their names, they don’t sound very kind.

‘But from what I’ve heard about Wrath, it doesn’t seem all that bad.’

So what about Lust?

I was curious.

“We won’t get a resolution today. It might take days, maybe even months.”

“But the European Union is in a pressing situation right now. Preparing for the Wrath raid is costing them money even while doing nothing. The results might come sooner than expected.”

I nodded in agreement as I listened to Brother Young-seong and Jeong So-yeon’s opinions. It was very reassuring.

“Should we start preparing in advance, just in case?”

“For what?”

“For the supplies needed for the Wrath raid.”

“That’s not a bad idea. Even if you can’t personally participate in the raid, they’ll definitely want to procure your items. It wouldn’t hurt to be prepared.”

“Then I’ll start preparing slowly from tomorrow.”

“Do you have everything you need? Enough hands?”

“I have plenty.”

When I said there was no problem, Brother Young-seong muttered quietly.

“Lazy farmer.”

“Sorry?”

“Nothing, just talking to myself. Some of us are so busy that we’re working ourselves to the bone, while others just set up auto-hunting and relax.”

“Haha.”

He wasn’t wrong.

Instead, I proudly puffed out my chest and said,

“I’m really good at being lazy.”

“Haa, I should’ve stuck to my retirement. If I hadn’t, I’d be fishing at your place every day by now.”

After that, we chatted about recent events and various news. We decided to wait for word from the Awakening Headquarters or the guild master by the end of the day.

“Oh, right. Hanul.”

“Hmm?”

“I finally made the jang. The meju we made together back then.”

“Ohhh! Really?!”

“What’s this? Making jang?”

Jeong So-yeon asked with a curious expression, and Ara answered in her place.

“We made something called meju from soybeans! And just yesterday, the fermentation was completed! We put the meju in a jar with brine, floated some charcoal, and closed the lid…”

Ara explained everything from start to finish, then proudly spread her hands wide.

“We’re making doenjang and ganjang! We just need to wait for a bit more, and it’ll be done!”

“Wow, really? Ara, did you help make it too?”

“I made it!”

“Oh, our Ara is so impressive.”

As Ara shared her adventure in making doenjang, Brother Young-seong and Hanul swallowed hard, as if their mouths were already watering.

“Kyu-seong’s doenjang, huh…”

“Could we maybe make gochujang too?”

I was about to nod, but then I hesitated.

“We’ve already harvested some peppers, though it’s not much.”

“Ohhh!”

“But I’m not sure about gochujang yet. I don’t know how spicy the peppers need to be to make it.”

“What do you mean?”

“If you harvest peppers later, they get spicier. So I’m not sure how long to wait or what level of spiciness would be ideal for gochujang.”

“Hmm! You should have mentioned that earlier! I can help you figure it out.”

“How?”

“We can analyze the spiciness level of peppers used for gochujang and compare it to yours. But you’ll need to harvest one every day and send them to me when you have time.”

“Yes. I’ll give it a try.”

I decided to send them every three days.

It could be a bit tricky if I missed the timing, but it was much better than doing it haphazardly.

“Doenjang stew!”

“Kimchi stew!”

“Oyi doenjang muchim!”

“Soy sauce marinated bulgogi!”

“Spicy pork stir-fry!”

“Kimchi!”

“White rice!”

“Kyaa!”

Ara and Jeong So-yeon began listing food names as if they were playing a relay game.

When they mentioned white rice, I couldn’t help but wonder if by the time the doenjang, ganjang, and gochujang were ready, we could actually make a meal with rice I grew myself.

‘Just imagine putting kimchi on top of white rice… gulp.’

The thought alone made my mouth water.

Ah, I’m hungry.

“Shall we chat while having something to eat?”

“!!”

Everyone’s heads snapped around so fast that it made a whooshing sound.

For a moment, it felt like a scene from a horror movie, sending chills down my spine.

“I guess I was being insensitive. Haha.”

“No, no! It’s fine, let’s talk while we eat.”

Hanul, perhaps afraid I might change my mind, became desperate. Who would believe that this man could be called a predator, seeing him like this?

In the end, I took out some seafood dishes that I had made and brought separately.

There was spicy braised monkfish, simmered croaker heads, and other assorted seafood. Unfortunately, the crayfish were all gone.

“W-What is this?!”

“Kyu-seong! Are you dealing with seafood now too? Are you running an aquaculture farm?!”

I just smiled at their fuss and started serving the food. Ara, who was waiting quietly beside me, was watching the others with a mischievous expression.

“Hehe. It’s delicious, you’ll be surprised.”

She looked like a little devil tempting them. But I can guarantee it—the food was so good that you’d believe a devil had made it!

The seafood itself was incomparable to anything on Earth…

And it was cooked with my crops? There was no way it wouldn’t be delicious.

If it wasn’t good, it would only be because it had gone bad.

“Whew, whew.”

Hanul, no longer able to hold back, picked up a spoon with trembling hands. It was a slightly scary sight.

“You can go ahead and eat.”

“Th-Thank you for the food.”

“Thanks for the meal!”

“Ooh, this looks delicious.”

Hanul carefully scooped some of the broth from the stew and brought it to his lips.

Ah, he knows how to enjoy food.

That stew broth was a concentrated extract of my crops, giant croaker head, and a finely ground stock made from the shell of a giant crayfish.

This dish might even stand a chance against Jae-seong’s cooking. I was quite confident, even though I made it myself.

And it really was incredibly delicious!

Gulp.

His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down.

And then, Hanul shed a tear.

“I swallowed it by mistake! Come back up, you wretched throat!”

Ah, it seemed to be a success.

Soon, the others tasted the food, their eyes widening in surprise.

“I expected it to be good, but this is…”

“It’s terrifying. I feel like I won’t be able to eat anything else after this. What should I do?”

Jeong So-yeon and Brother Young-seong stared down at the food with faces full of fear. Of course, they didn’t say they wouldn’t eat it.

Soon, the sound of utensils clinking filled the quiet meal. What was supposed to be a light snack turned into a full-fledged meal.

Ring, ring, ring.

“Who’s calling during a meal? Huh? Brother?”

Just as the bowls were nearly empty, Hanul muttered as he looked at his phone.

“It’s a call from Seok-jun.”

Everyone paused their eating and waited for a moment. It was a call from the guild master.

“…Huh!”

Hanul suddenly let out an exclamation.

What could have happened?

“I understand. Yes. Yes, yes. We’ll do that.”

After the call ended, Hanul looked at us with a serious expression.

I thought he would start talking while eating, but the atmosphere was so serious that we all waited for him to speak.

Gulp.

“I had a fishbone stuck in my teeth.”

“Hey! You scared me! So, what did the guild master say?”

At Brother Young-seong’s words, Hanul finally revealed what he heard on the call.

“Ryu Wang-jin from Skyscraper, Ryu Cheon, and even Junichi have arrived.”

“Stop joking. You just want to finish eating, don’t you?”

“Huh? No, I’m serious.”

Hanul waved his hands in protest, looking genuinely wronged. It was getting hard to tell if he was joking or serious.

“Is that true?”

“Yeah! They’ve come to the Awakening Headquarters. They’re asking if we can come over now too.”

What on earth…

What’s going on?

Unexpectedly, Stella accepted quickly.

After all, even if it’s just on paper, he is Noel’s spouse, so assisting him is also part of her duty.

Of course, it was only after she heard the detailed explanation of her task.

In any case, no matter how bizarre someone’s taste may be, if they were seeking a romantic atmosphere, they wouldn’t be leaping across building rooftops while loaded down with luggage.

“…………Please don’t startle me like that.”

Stella spoke, looking a bit dizzy.

“You really need to learn how to communicate without causing misunderstandings. You nearly gave me a heart attack.”

On the other hand, Aiden, who was flying across rooftops with his collar grabbed, seemed even more terrified.

Carrying an adult man with one hand like a sack while leaping over multiple buildings at a time is nothing short of superhuman.

‘Her physical strength is truly…!’

Having recently engaged directly with the knights, he now understood clearly that even among them, there are distinct levels of ability.

Of course, she might not be stronger than Noel, who uses pure white energy to its fullest, but she’s pulling off these feats without any special powers.

It’s clear why she holds the position of Vice Commander of Lionheart Corps.

Thanks to her, Aiden was now easily accomplishing tasks that would’ve taken him days on his own.

“Yes, could you handle that as well?”

Stella, with a slight pout, hammered a stake deeply into the ground where Aiden had pointed.

So far, she had been running across buildings, driving these mysterious stakes into them as instructed.

“Mr. Aiden.”

Stella tilted her head and asked,

“What exactly is the point of all this? I did finish quickly, though.”

“There is a point to it.”

After all, those aren’t just ordinary stakes.

-System Log

Imbuing the target ‘wooden stake’ with ‘Divinity’.

These are items he had been crafting continuously during the day, even while learning combat techniques through nightly torture sessions with Meyer.

Since they’re not as complex as firearms, it wasn’t too difficult to imbue each one with a single power, but the quantity was staggering.

Noel had been shocked, asking if he was planning to hunt down a vampire army.

-System Log

▶ Using ‘Weaver of Fate’ on the target ‘Katia’.

Copying the skill ‘Divinity Manipulation: Delayed Release’.

And there is a skill that serves as the key to utilizing them.

The power within will function as he wishes.

Combining it with the divine energy already imbued in those stakes could allow for some… ‘interesting’ uses.

Of course, it’s not enough to cover an entire chapter on its own.

What will be crucial are the three remaining replication rights from Noel, and one replication right from the Prince, which, while weaker than the original, can still ‘mimic’.

How he uses these will determine whether Aiden survives this incident.

As he was contemplating this, Stella, arms crossed, asked again, clearly dissatisfied.

“I don’t know what you’re aiming for, but if it’s just this, you could’ve asked Katia or someone else. Why me?”

“Because I can’t ask them.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m talking about what exactly happened between Lady Noel and the Guardian Knight.”

Stella froze in her tracks.

“That’s someone else’s personal matter. I don’t think it’s right to ask me about it.”

“The Prince plans to use it to pressure Lady Noel. It seemed like more than just a personal grudge.”

To Stella, who stubbornly kept her lips tightly sealed, Aiden continued speaking calmly.

“Please trust me, Lady Stella. I’m asking because I want to help Lady Noel, too.”

“You seem quite dedicated for someone who got caught in a simple marriage of convenience.”

“Isn’t it a good thing to work hard?”

“Nothing is more suspicious than goodwill with unknown intentions or motives.”

Fortunately, if there’s anything clear, it’s this:

“I don’t like the Prince.”

It’s mainly because he started manipulating Katia just to make things difficult for Aiden.

Aiden tends to hold long grudges when it comes to that kind of behavior.

“I feel compelled to sabotage everything he does. So, I need to know what he’s using to blackmail Noel.”

“I especially can’t stand it when someone I dislike messes with Lady Noel.”

…

“That slick-faced guy, scheming in the shadows, is really an eyesore.”

At his final words, Stella, unable to suppress her laughter, covered her mouth with her hand.

“……If you get caught saying things like that, it’s the gallows, Mr. Aiden.”

“Oh, are you going to report me?”

“No. I also dislike anyone who treats Lady Noel like that.”

After sharing a mischievous smile typical of those who understand each other’s secret intentions, Stella’s voice, now steady, continued.

“At the end of the Alliance War… there was a devastating battle that severely disadvantaged the Empire. Are you aware of it?”

“Vaguely?”

He had heard rumors about it.

During the war, the Kingdom of Grivus was the Empire’s most intense and long-standing opponent, and it remained the same in the final battle near the Empire’s borders.

It was said that a special unit was sent to break through the frontline and disrupt the entire Empire.

It was a perfect checkmate situation, with only a weak defense left for the Empire.

If it had succeeded, the two of them wouldn’t be standing here now, having this conversation.

The entire Empire would have been engulfed in the flames of war.

Lionheart—Noel’s fame also rose after that incident.

She became the hero who rallied a handful of defenders and repelled the Kingdom’s elite forces head-on, preventing the Empire from collapsing due to a single strike.

“……Although it’s not widely known, there were two particularly notable figures among those who deployed alongside Lady Noel at that time. One was the Prince, and the other—”

Theresa Adelaide.

Known as the Guardian Knight, she was a veteran of the Order and the one who initially recruited Noel into the Imperial Army.

They led the charge in that battle, and while two returned, one did not.

“That’s all I know.”

“Only Lady Noel and the Prince truly know what ‘exactly’ happened that day. But, what’s known is…………”

After hesitating for a moment, Stella continued in a disapproving tone.

“There are rumors that Dame Theresa sacrificed herself to save Lady Noel, who made a mistake during the battle.”

“I’ve heard that some of those who were there at the time say such things, but no one knows the truth.”

“……I see.”

Aiden replied, his face showing a slight frown.

Even if the exact circumstances are unknown, just hearing the outline cleared up quite a few questions.

The Guardian Knight was someone important to both the Prince and Noel. In the original background, she was described as almost a mother figure to them. If the rumors were true, it makes some sense why the Prince dislikes Noel so much.

However, one thing still doesn’t make sense.

Why propose to someone you despise that much?

Asking someone you hate to marry you doesn’t just seem inconsistent—it’s completely irrational.

Didn’t he even ask Aiden to call off his engagement just to secure that position?

It doesn’t add up.

It feels less like a personal vendetta and more like there’s an entirely different agenda.

‘…I’ll need to dig deeper into that,’ Aiden thought as he gently patted Stella’s shoulder.

“Shall we head back now?”

Tomorrow is an important day.

They need to sleep well and conserve their strength in preparation for any potential incidents.

If possible, they should also secure a good position, to ensure they can respond as quickly as possible.

‘Whatever the case, it’ll happen regardless of where we are.’

As indicated by the title of Act 1, “Crack in the Capital,” the event would be of a scale that no one in the city could miss.

Even if it’s not too severe, the possibility of being unaware of it when it occurs is slim.

Just as he was thinking this, something suddenly appeared in front of his eyes.

-System Message

▶ Quest information has been updated!

-Quest Info

Act 1, <Crack in the Capital>

Act 1 is about to commence!

Related events will unfold shortly. (D-Day!)

Sham Marriage

▶ You have been chosen as Noel’s spouse.

Maintain your contract until the end!

Related events will soon occur. (D-Day!)

-Update?

Wondering why this suddenly appeared, Aiden realized that it was about time for the date to change.

So, it made sense for the information to update.

He thought of it lightly.

…!

-…!!

Suddenly.

Without any warning.

A terrifyingly ominous energy began swirling around.

It seemed that Aiden wasn’t the only one who sensed it, as Stella, who was getting ready to carry him like luggage, flinched and looked up at the sky.

“What is that…?”

Dark, tangible death energy roiled around them, soon spiraling upward as if coalescing into one mass.

Visible from here was a ‘rift,’ clearly in view.

Like a tear in canvas, the twisted landscape created a crack that distorted the surrounding space.

Then.

The initial fissure expanded into a massive, splitting rupture.

‘Ah.’

Aiden sighed inwardly.

It was a sight he remembered vividly.

This was the event that marked the beginning of Act 1, “The Phantom Knight Incident.”

‘Heartless bastards…!’

He cursed inwardly, unsure of whom he was directing it at.

At the very least, couldn’t they have given him some time to rest…?

“You’d better hold on tight to me, Mr. Aiden.”

Seeing the situation, Stella’s face hardened as she spoke, wrapping her arms tightly around him.

Aiden felt as though he had been upgraded from mere baggage to a valuable possession.

“I’ll get you to safety at full speed. After that, I’ll call for backup.”

However, there was no need for her to continue that sentence.

“Aiden!”

In this strange situation, there was someone even more concerned about his safety than Stella.

It hadn’t been long since the vortex appeared, but the voice of Noel, who had somehow found them, rang out from a distance.

Soon, as always, Noel came hurtling down like a meteor, landing before them.

“Are you safe? Something strange suddenly appeared—”

Noel’s voice trailed off abruptly.

It was probably because he saw Aiden clinging tightly to Stella, like a baby bird nestled against its mother.

An awkward silence was shared among the three of them.

It lasted for quite a while…

“…Aiden,” Noel finally spoke, breaking the silence.

As usual, he wore his trademark smile.

It seemed like he was trying not to make the atmosphere any more tense.

“…Your situation is strange, but now is not the time to dwell on that.”

“Right?”

“So, let me ask you simply.”

‘So, there’s no option of asking later, huh.’

No matter how urgent the situation, he had to address this first.

Upon closer inspection, even though Noel was smiling at him, her eyes weren’t smiling at all.

“What were you doing with Stella?”

“Taking a walk.”

“At this hour?”

“Alone together?”

“… …”

“Interesting.”

“I assure you, there’s nothing I’ve done that would make me feel ashamed in front of Lady Noel.”

“Is that so.”

Noel’s voice was as gentle as ever, but Aiden couldn’t shake the feeling that he could read between the lines.

‘Oh, is that so?’

-or something like that.

“Even if you had done something like that, it’s not really my concern. After all… we’re just married through a ‘contract,’ aren’t we.”

“…Lady Noel?”

“Yes, that’s right. We’re not in a relationship where we exchange deep feelings, after all. Isn’t that so…”

Aiden’s eyes darted towards Noel, who was stroking the hilt of her sword as she continued speaking.

It was probably a habitual gesture, but it somehow gave off a faint aura of danger.

“Even though you said you liked me.”

“…Pardon?”

“It’s nothing.”

When Aiden asked what she had mumbled, Noel instantly cut off her own murmur like a knife.

She then furrowed her brows sharply and turned her gaze straight ahead.

There was still a cold smile lingering on her lips…

“Shall we handle that first?”

Noel’s gaze shifted towards the massive fissure, now visible to everyone in the capital.

Somehow, she seemed as if she was preparing to vent her frustration there.

Round 176

Prev | TOC | Next

With a trivial sound effect, the light vanished.

And then, taking the place of the light, Frey appeared with a “Ta-da!”

Flap flap-

“I’m flying! …Am I flying?”

Frey flapped her wings from the ground.

Her wings, composed of multiple pairs, were semi-transparent and shimmered with a sky-blue hue as they moved vigorously.

– I have awakened! I, Frey, have truly become the Queen of Alfheim!

“Oh, congratulations?”

Watching the diligently flapping Frey, I tilted my head in confusion.

It seemed like flying would take some time.

“Wow, you can fly now?”

“Right?”

As Seon-ah and I tilted our heads, Ara lay on the ground, observing Frey’s flapping.

“Is it flying? Is it flying!”

– I can fly!

Flap flap flap.

The wings flapped somewhat feebly.

But even though she said she’d become the true queen, it didn’t seem like anything had changed.

“Frey.”

– Yes!

“When you awakened, the curse was lifted, right? So, what’s changed?”

– I can fly! Now, just like the other queens, I can fly freely!

“And?”

– And? That’s it, I can fly now?

Because she’d mentioned being cursed and needing to awaken, I had expected some dramatic change.

– Ah! I can now communicate with World Tree!

“Oh?!”

That should’ve been mentioned first!

Of course, I was thrilled that Frey could fly now, but being able to communicate with World Tree was even more significant.

“Oh, oh, oh! You can talk to the shining tree!”

– Yes!

“What is it saying right now?”

– It’s too far, I can’t hear it!

As the somewhat lacking conversation continued, strength began to build in Frey’s flapping wings.

And as if rewarded for her effort, Frey’s small body began to lift off the ground.

“Oh my, oh my.”

“You’re really flying!”

My father and mother, seeing this, watched in amazement and cheered.

Seon-ah had already grabbed a camera and was recording in real-time.

“I, I’m flying! This is amazing!”

– Uwooo….

Ara and Mammon were watching with their mouths open, and even the Commander Pururk, no, Kongkong, was hopping around in celebration of this sight.

– Can you see? I’m flying right now!

“Yes, we can see! But, oh?”

As Frey’s clumsy flight wobbled like a crashing helicopter, she eventually fell.

Ara caught the falling Frey and shouted.

“I saved her!”

“Nice catch.”

It seemed that Frey’s flight practice would need to be a bit safer and take some more time.

After many events in such a short time, we had stew and spicy soup made from leftover monkfish and giant mackerel heads from the previous day.

– I’ve never tasted anything like this before! Sob. It’s a taste that moves me.

Seeing Mammon genuinely on the verge of tears, I felt a bit guilty.

I should have invited him yesterday as well.

And seeing this seemed to move my parents’ hearts, as they showed extra care towards Mammon.

“Our dear Mammon, eat a lot.”

“If it’s not enough, just say the word. I’ll have Kyu-seong cook more for you.”

Mammon nodded repeatedly, filled with gratitude, as he ate. But then, he quickly became dejected and said.

– I wish I could let my comrades experience this taste too….

“Hmm! That won’t do. Can you at least grill them yourselves?”

– Yes, my Lord!

“There are more that we caught in the warehouse. Take those and grill them. But don’t cook them too thoroughly, or you might burn them like last time.”

– Oh, as expected of my Lord! I, Mammon, am overwhelmed by your boundless grace.

I thought it might be a good idea to set a date and hold a cooking class next time.

Though, it would probably be better for my mother or Jae-seong to teach rather than me…

‘I’ll have to bring it up sometime.’

But today wasn’t that day.

After finishing our tearful meal, we escorted my parents outside.

I personally drove them home in the newly purchased vehicle.

My mother was fascinated, but my father seemed unsure where to place his hands, as if he were being overly cautious.

It was similar to how I felt the first time I sat in the seat, full of fear.

Indeed, I am my father’s son.

“Vroom vroom!”

“Ara seems to really like it. That’s a relief.”

My mother smiled as she patted Ara’s head.

“Please visit often. It’s not that far.”

“Sure. Next time, I’ll go to that sea place and we can fish together.”

“It’s a bit far, are you okay with that? If we take father, it could take over 10 hours just to get there.”

“Hmm, I’ll think about it.”

It seemed that going too far was burdensome for him.

Anyway, on the way back after seeing my parents off, my phone suddenly rang.

“Oh, it’s Hanul.”

Lately, Hanul has been quite busy, so it’s been a while since he contacted me.

I had heard that Ara Hongryeon was getting busier by the day, supposedly because of me.

I had heard it so much that it stuck to my ears.

“Good things are good.”

As soon as I answered the call, Hanul called out to me in a surprised voice.

“Kyu-seong, my brother!”

“Yes, brother. What’s going on?”

“You’re out, aren’t you! It’s just that we’ve roughly got the outline of the incident from last time. Are you busy right now?”

“No, I’m free. Should I head to the guild?”

“Oh! Could you do that?”

“I’ll be there right away.”

Since I was already out driving, I decided to stop by the guild.

By the way, has the case been closed? I heard it was something the European Union had done.

I hung up the phone and immediately got back in the car.

“Ara, let’s go to the guild.”

“Let’s go! Hanul, Jeong So-yeon So-yeon! We’re coming!”

***

The airport was bustling.

Various dignitaries from different countries were urgently arriving in private jets.

The government already knew this, having been informed by the Awakening Headquarters, but the public did not.

“Isn’t that Michael?”

“No way…?”

“Hey! That person is Dominic! Then the person next to him must be Michael!”

“Wow, amazing!”

Famous figures from Europe.

Not just awakened individuals but also high-ranking officials arrived in a hurry and headed somewhere.

Before the reporters could arrive, they quickly moved toward the Awakening Headquarters.

The Awakening Headquarters of South Korea.

This place was also in a state of emergency due to the sudden arrival of unexpected guests.

“Busy, busy!”

“Stop everything you’re doing! First, prepare to welcome the guests!”

Although Korea was in a position of power, the opponents were too strong to be haughty.

Especially since all the level 8 awakened individuals and high-ranking officials from the European Awakening Union were coming, there was no room for complacency.

Boom!

“Director! They’ll arrive in 5 minutes!”

“Are they coming this fast on purpose? No, I guess it’s already time.”

The swift action of the European Awakening Union was truly impressive.

Given that they were a united force, one would expect some conflict of opinions, yet they all managed to gather and arrive just two days after the incident….

“They’re definitely doing this on purpose.”

Their justification was to apologize as soon as possible for their wrongdoing.

But the real intention was clearly to rush things and settle matters before compensation discussions could take place.

“Director! They’ve arrived!”

“What about Ara Hongryeon?”

“They’re on their way with the guild leaders from Iron Blood and Terror. It will take about 10 minutes.”

“Hmm.”

The hallway grew noisy.

It seemed they had arrived.

Director Jeon Young-joo headed toward the hallway to greet them personally.

But with pride on the line, she didn’t go all the way outside.

‘Our Lee Kyu-seong almost got into big trouble!’

In truth, she felt it was rude for them to visit so suddenly.

It was as if they were trying to eliminate any time for consideration.

“Ah, Director!”

Team Leader Park, who had personally escorted the guests from the airport, noticed Jeon Young-joo stepping into the hallway.

Jeon Young-joo glanced over, confirming the identity of the guests behind him.

A group of level 8 awakened individuals from Europe’s great powers.

And the leaders of organizations ranked within the top 100 guilds worldwide.

Though there were only a bit more than ten people, each one was incredibly famous.

“Thank you for coming such a long way. I am Jeon Young-joo, the Director of South Korea’s Awakening Headquarters.”

“First, let me offer my apologies. I am Dave, the one responsible for this incident.”

Dave Taylor.

A 7th-level awakened individual and the guild leader of Taylor Guild.

Among those gathered, Dave was the least famous. While fame isn’t everything, to Jeon Young-joo, it seemed like he had been picked as the scapegoat.

“Please, come inside. Let’s discuss further.”

In any case, it was they who were in a hurry.

Jeon Young-joo had no intention of starting the conversation until Ara Hongryeon and the guild leaders from Terror and Iron Blood arrived.

“Ah, Director Jeon, is it?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“There’s something we need to address first, so I’d like to discuss that before anything else.”

The atmosphere wasn’t good.

Jeon Young-joo observed the person speaking as calmly as possible.

Michael Rodman. A French level 8 awakened individual and a world-renowned celebrity.

If Iron Blood had Kim Tae-yang, then Europe had Michael.

The difference was that Michael was far more famous.

And his political influence was also significant.

“First of all, Edward, the representative from the UK who acted alone in all of this, was expelled from the Union as of yesterday. In his stead, I offer our sincere apologies.”

“Acted alone?”

Jeon Young-joo chuckled inwardly.

But she didn’t show it.

“You should probably save that for the guild leaders. They’ll be here shortly.”

“We’ll do that.”

Michael responded coolly, and the European Union representatives maintained a bold demeanor as if they had done nothing wrong.

Once they were guided into the room, a heavy silence filled the space.

Since this wasn’t a meeting for a pleasant occasion, there wasn’t much to say beyond the formal greetings.

Jeon Young-joo was a person of pride, and the European Union was notorious for their arrogance.

“They’re a bit late.”

Someone muttered.

This attitude left Jeon Young-joo and the headquarters staff speechless.

Is that really the demeanor of those who have done wrong?

Before it came to this, the representatives from Austria who had visited first had apologized profusely.

Compared to them, this was simply incomparable.

“Director…”

At that moment, someone urgently called out to Jeon Young-joo.

Feeling a sudden unease, Jeon Young-joo preemptively asked back.

“What? Are the guild leaders going to be even later?”

“N-no, that’s not it…”

The employee took a moment to calm his breathing before choosing his words carefully.

Just as Jeon Young-joo was starting to wonder what could be making him so anxious, the employee finally spoke again.

“China…! Ah!”

Realizing his mistake, the employee quickly approached Jeon Young-joo and whispered in his ear.

“The guild leader of Skyscraper has arrived in Korea.”

“!!?”

Sky… scraper?

Why are they here now…?

“And not just them—Ino Junichi has also just arrived with his guild executives.”

“…”

The timing could only be seen as deliberate.

And Jeon Young-joo could feel it.

Without realizing it, this place had become the eye of the storm in the awakening industry.

Silence falls in the meeting room.

The mercenaries who entered late all wore tense expressions, and Maverick, Himan, and Argonia, who were seated, looked at Alon in the same way.

Yet, even in that moment when everyone’s gaze focused on him, Alon’s expression remained calm.

To be precise, only his outward appearance seemed calm.

‘Did I miscalculate?’

Behind his expressionless face, Alon thought nervously as sweat beaded on his skin.

‘Should I have used a different method? No, there wouldn’t have been another impactful way. Freezing Myaon was only possible because I caught her off guard.’

While staring intently at Argonia, Alon also kept Myaon, visible from the corner of his eye, in mind.

‘She’s still frozen.’

He had used all of his magic power, casting ice magic five times with his enchanted armor, so Myaon remained in that frozen state.

… He hoped the conversation would move forward before the magic broke.

Knowing Myaon’s personality, Alon was certain she would go on a rampage as soon as she was freed from the magic, and with growing anxiety, he looked at Argonia.

If Argonia, the strongest among those present, acknowledged Alon, there would be no further conflict.

Besides, the reason Alon had confidently cast the spell was that he trusted Argonia.

Through the game, Alon had seen several times that Argonia would coolly assess situations and make rational decisions rather than stubbornly holding onto unnecessary pride.

… Specifically, it was because a situation in a particular quest was very similar to the current one, and each time, Argonia had reacted the same way.

In the silence, Alon wanted to open his mouth and prompt a response, but he held back.

Since he had already cast the spell, it didn’t matter what he said now.

From this point, it was up to the mercenaries to make their judgment, and to earn their approval, he needed to maintain his composure.

A short while later…

“So, you’re challenging us?”

The silence was broken by Maverick’s voice, his expression twisted in displeasure.

Seeing Maverick almost ready to draw his sword, upset by the sudden attack, Alon thought, “I’m done for.”

But…

“Stop.”

To Alon’s immense relief, just as Maverick was about to draw his sword, Argonia intervened.

“What? Are you telling me to just let this go after what happened?”

“We were the ones who ignored him.”

“Even so!”

“I told you to stop, didn’t I?”

Argonia’s expression slightly darkened.

Maverick glared at Argonia, clearly displeased.

“Tch.”

Eventually, Maverick clicked his tongue and sat back down as if he had no other choice.

Himan also remained silent, indicating that he had no objection to Argonia’s decision.

Seeing the situation settle, Alon breathed a sigh of relief and spoke up again.

“When do you plan to descend into the labyrinth?”

“We plan to descend in two days,” Argonia replied politely.

…?

For a moment, Alon wondered, ‘Was Argonia always the kind of character to speak so politely to someone?’ but he continued.

“Then let’s continue the meeting tomorrow. With one person like this, we can’t really hold a meeting anyway.”

Alon subtly shifted his gaze to Myaon.

Once the freezing spell ended, the magic would be undone in an instant, and Myaon would certainly throw a tantrum. For now, Alon decided to make his exit.

“…Let’s do that.”

As Argonia accepted, Alon stood up without hesitation, turned around, and passed by the mercenaries.

Creak—

He exited the meeting room.

With that, silence filled the room.

And then.

‘This is bad for my heart. I swear I’m never doing anything like this again.’

Finally outside, Alon clutched his pounding heart, let out a small breath, and hurriedly left the mansion.

***

Shortly after Alon left the meeting room.

Maverick, after sending the soldiers away, spoke with an irritated expression.

“Ha, I really don’t like that guy, no matter how I think about it. Is it because he’s a noble and never got smacked around?”

It was obvious to anyone that his words were directed at Alon.

However.

“Shut up, would you?”

“What?”

“I said, shut up.”

“Did you just say…?”

Maverick, who had been glaring silently at Himan, furrowed his brow. The two never got along.

“Ha, seriously… Why is this guy still acting up after being spared?”

“What?”

“Don’t you get it? Argonia spared you, you idiot.”

At those words, Maverick, who seemed not to understand, made a displeased face.

“…Stop, Maverick. Himan’s right.”

“What did you say?”

“If you had drawn your sword earlier, you might have really died.”

“What? How does that even—”

When Argonia added his words, Maverick, who had been scowling, fell silent.

He had been too irritated earlier to notice his surroundings properly, but now he saw it.

The beads of sweat trickling down Argonia’s body.

…What the hell?

Maverick cursed under his breath, startled.

He had never seen Argonia sweat like that before.

Even Himan, whom Maverick grudgingly acknowledged as stronger than himself, was also sweating.

Maverick couldn’t help but stay quiet.

“…Argonia.”

“What is it?”

“What was that, anyway?”

Himan, aware that Argonia had lived for hundreds of years, asked, hoping he might know something. Argonia remained silent.

In truth, he had a vague idea.

But that knowledge wasn’t his own; it came from the Red Dragon, his mother, who had long since disappeared from this world.

He recalled the warning from his mother, who had claimed there was nothing in this world to fear—except one thing.

Long ago.

‘Remember this. If ever a black eye appears in the night sky, avert your gaze immediately and do not look at it.’

‘If you do happen to see it, turn away. Do not acknowledge it. Do not remember it. If you grow to be a powerful mage someday, erase that memory from your mind.’

‘Remember this, my beloved child. Never, ever look directly at “the one who consumes boundaries.”’

Recalling his mother’s words, Argonia thought back to the earlier moment.

The blue eye that had appeared behind Count Palatio.

—An eye that felt endlessly ominous.

Just gazing at it made one feel as if their soul was being sucked out.

Creep~!

The black eye that had glared at him with a sly smile.

‘Who… is that man, really?’

Argonia swallowed his breath quietly.

***

The next day.

Contrary to Alon’s worries that they might still refuse to accept his plans and continue to argue, the meeting proceeded smoothly, and Alon realized two things.

The first was that the otherworldly being was on the 12th floor.

The second was that they intended to block it on the 5th floor.

As soon as he heard this, Alon immediately explained his prearranged plan in detail and also briefed them on the information he had gathered about the otherworldly being.

That took about 30 minutes.

Alon, who had even shared the knowledge of the otherworldly being, disguised as information from an ancient book, watched the gathered mercenaries with slight tension, wondering if they would object.

‘In the end, we’ll have to compromise, right?’

The strategy Alon had laid out was one he was confident in, a plan to capture the otherworldly being with minimal damage.

But that was only his own thinking.

He knew full well that the mercenaries weren’t under his command.

He couldn’t order them to follow the strategy, only suggest it. That’s why he was so nervous.

“…Let’s go with that.”

“I agree.”

“No objections.”

“Me neither.”

“…??”

Without a single complaint, the plan was instantly accepted, and Alon stood there, bewildered.

Really, no one had any issues?

He asked again, just to make sure.

“None.”

“Me neither.”

“Same here.”

“Me too.”

Hearing the four of them respond with no objections, Alon couldn’t help but think to himself.

‘Was yesterday’s impact really that strong?’

Alon shook his head slightly.

Even though the events of yesterday were impactful, there was no way it was enough to make Argonia and the mercenaries of the Five Great Guilds this obedient.

Which led him to wonder.

‘Could it be…?’

Alon glanced over at Rine, who had accompanied them to today’s meeting.

But.

‘…?’

Rine, with her usual indifferent expression, still showed a clear hint of confusion, which made Alon even more puzzled by the situation.

‘Something feels off…’

The mercenaries were much more obedient than they had been in the game, even going so far as to use polite language, and Alon tilted his head in bewilderment.

Even Myaon, who should have still harbored some resentment after being frozen by Alon, remained quiet, which was strange. But it would have been odd for Alon to directly ask why there were no complaints.

“Then, let’s head down tomorrow. It’ll take some time to prepare.”

With that, Alon wrapped up the meeting.

***

And so, the day of the decisive battle arrived.

Leaving Evan behind, Alon set off with Rine—who insisted on accompanying him—and the Outer God subjugation team, heading toward the 5th floor.

‘…It’s much more oppressive.’

Even though Alon had seen the labyrinth dozens of times in the game, the real thing was far more ominous.

In the darkness where nothing could be seen without torches, monsters would leap out at any moment.

The deep, abyss-like darkness that the light couldn’t reach naturally stirred fear in people’s hearts.

Of course, because of the number of mercenaries, the area around Alon was relatively bright, but the darkness didn’t completely vanish.

‘I should never come here alone.’

With that thought, Alon continued descending into the labyrinth, and after some time passed, when they had gone beyond the 2nd floor, a break was given.

Resting in the safe zone that the mercenaries had created inside the labyrinth, Alon heard a voice.

“Hey, do you have a minute?”

It was Myaon, who had approached him without him noticing.

“…Why?”

Alon, a bit tense, thought she might be looking to pick a fight.

“I just wanted to talk, that’s all.”

But surprisingly, Myaon sat next to him with a light smile, almost making Alon feel foolish for being so cautious, and she started chatting casually.

Alon, who listened in bewilderment, soon heard Myaon ask.

“By the way, does the Count have any aversion to beastfolk?”

“No, not really.”

“That’s a relief.”

“Why is that a relief?”

Alon, puzzled by her answer, gave her a questioning look.

“Hey, Count, by any chance…”

With a sly smile, Myaon continued.

“Do you have any interest in mating with me?”

She casually dropped an outrageous remark.

“…?”

Alon’s brain momentarily shut down.

Round 175

While Kyu-seong was enjoying time with his family, the awakening industry was experiencing turbulence within just a day.

“What, what’s going on?! Suddenly, the Chinese side has canceled a large number of contracts and deals with the European Union?”

“Are we dreaming? Some major guilds in Japan are also showing suspicious movements similar to China’s.”

The headquarters of the Awakening Organization and the top guilds in South Korea were in chaos. The intelligence and information teams, who were monitoring the international situation, promptly reported the sudden events to their superiors, and the response was one of surprise.

“Hmm, it’s embarrassing. They moved faster than us.”

“Still, thanks to this, we have a reason to act. Let’s move.”

Soon after, the South Korean guilds also began to move as a group. Unlike China and Japan, they did not act openly but exerted pressure behind the scenes. The justification was the Awakener captured during the attack on Kyu-seong.

– Distribute shares of the dungeon raid profits to the guilds and Awakeners who were affected.

The demands were simple, but they were by no means trivial.

“What on earth is going on?!”

The European Awakening Union was already in a state of emergency due to the unexpected actions of the Skyscraper Guild and the mistake of the Dark Shadow agent. And with national-level sanctions beginning to spread among the Asian powers, they were caught off guard.

“That’s what we want to know! What is happening?!”

In the end, heads of state and representatives from various countries flew directly to the UK, voicing their frustrations. It was not easy to overlook the rare unity among the Asian powers, which typically didn’t collaborate so easily.

“We are analyzing the cause.”

“Analyzing the cause?! Is that all you have to say? Contact the Asian side immediately and find out what’s going on!”

Even Edward, who held the most influence within the Union, found the situation spiraling out of control. This led to infighting among the factions within the Union, who began to tear at each other viciously. Eventually, Edward lost his position and was expelled from the Union, replaced by a new representative from the UK.

All of this happened within a single day—less than 24 hours.

However, they still did not realize that the reason for the sudden actions of the Asian powers was all due to a single individual.

And that individual, who could be considered the cause of all this, was…

Crunch!

“Mmm! Despite its appearance, this is indeed a chili pepper! It’s just the right amount of spiciness, too.”

…happily eating a chili pepper.

***

“What’s this?”

After a night’s rest, we woke up the next day to check on the newly harvested chili peppers.

“It’s a chili pepper.”

“Isn’t it a paprika?”

Seon-ah looked at the chili pepper quizzically. After sniffing it, she confidently corrected herself.

“It’s definitely a chili pepper.”

“Is it spicy?”

“Yeah, just from the smell, you can tell it’s got a spicy kick.”

For reference, the item effect of the chili pepper was as follows:

[Magic-Infused Chili Pepper LV.1]

[When consumed, increases memory retention]

[When consumed, greatly enhances cold resistance for 3 minutes]

Not bad at all.

I’ve heard that in some dungeons, the environment is more challenging than the monsters themselves, so this crop’s effect could be quite useful.

In fact, I’ve heard that the crops I had casually supplied were performing remarkably well.

“I heard that the monster affinity effect of the Layla and the 0.3-second invincibility of the sweet potatoes have saved the day several times.”

I’ve also heard that the potatoes, which increase stamina and reduce hunger, have significantly reduced the burden of carrying food in dungeon raids.

It seems that even the crops I hadn’t given much thought to were turning out to be quite helpful.

“The taste is unusual.”

While confirming the effects of the chili pepper, Ara was nibbling on a red chili. The red chili was definitely spicier than the green one, and Ara described the spiciness as “unusual.”

“Let’s dry the red chili peppers and eat the green ones fresh.”

We decided to use a light exposure machine prepared for the chili farming to dry the red chili peppers. First, we spread out a mat and laid the chili peppers, which looked similar to bell peppers, in rows. Then we set up a metal frame over them and installed the machine. It was done in no time.

“You’re quite handy with this.”

“So, do I look like a professional farmer now?”

“You were already that a long time ago.”

My father waved his hand dismissively as he spoke.

While we were drying the chili peppers, Seon-ah briefly went to check on Pururuk, and soon after, some welcome guests arrived.

“Hello, Father! Mother!”

“(20≦)/”

“♡\(^U^~),♡”

It was Frey and the fairies.

They seemed busy after successfully cultivating Meluca, but they had come to cheer us on, carrying a bunch of fruits.

“Oh my, Frey, you’re here. And you little ones, too? It’s been a while.”

“And what are those fruits?”

My mother and father each reacted differently.

“It’s been a while! These are the fruits of a plant called Meluca!”

“Why did you go to the trouble? I could have come to get them myself.”

“Hehe, we were getting bored with nothing to do…”

Frey and the fairies scratched their heads awkwardly.

Come to think of it, this was perfect timing.

I called Soo, who was playing with Ara and Gomgom off to the side.

“Soo!”

– Sooo

Soo immediately responded to my call, waddling over, and seeing this, Frey was shocked.

– A plant is running over!

– (((;ᄆᄋ))

– (((;ᄆᄋ))

As Soo approached me, it looked in awe at the fairies flying around on the starlight bugs.

– Soooo

– Reveal your true identity!

Seeing these cute little ones together doubled the cuteness.

It was a shame that Seon-ah couldn’t witness this scene.

“Soo, it’s finally time for you to use your powers.”

-Soooo

“Okay, let’s start with the Five Elements Cycle! Ah, hold on a second!”

Soo had three abilities: the Five Elements Cycle, Vitality Recharge, and the Blessing of Spirits.

I hurriedly fetched an unfinished elixir from the storage and handed it over.

“By the way, the Five Elements Cycle isn’t some kind of attack skill, right?”

-Soooo

This isn’t going to work.

“Ara, translator! Please come here!”

When I called Ara, she quickly ran over, leaving whatever she was doing with Gomgom.

Gomgom, despite Soo and Ara leaving, stayed in place, wriggling diligently.

‘They say when kids are quiet, they’re up to something…’

For now, I let it be and asked Ara to translate.

“Translate this for me!”

“I’m going to ask Soo to use its powers now, can you ask if it’s an attack skill?”

“I’ll ask!”

As Ara immediately conveyed my words to Soo, Soo shook its head.

-Soooo

“It’s not!”

“Then what are the effects of the ability?”

-Soooo

“Don’t know!”

So simple and clear!

Watching this, my parents chuckled, while Frey wiped away cold sweat.

– My title as the cutest is in danger… What a terrifying plant!

Wait, you had a title like that?

After hearing Frey’s unexpected concerns, I asked Soo to use its ability.

“Let’s start with the Blessing of Spirits!”

-Soooo

The name seemed less dangerous than the Five Elements Cycle, so I chose it first.

And then…

[A Blessing of Spirits descends on the dungeon.]

[The probability of random effects occurring increases slightly for three days.]

[All living creatures in the dungeon are energized.]

[The chance of a bountiful harvest increases significantly for one week.]

“Wow, what is this!”

Everyone looked at me with wide eyes at my exclamation.

Ah, I guess only Awakeners like me can see this message?

As I explained the ability Soo had used, my parents and Frey stared at Soo in amazement.

“Soo, you’re amazing!”

– It even took my cheering job! What a scary plant!

Soo seemed perfectly fine after using the Blessing of Spirits.

For such a remarkable ability, it didn’t seem exhausted at all.

“Soo, when can you use the Blessing of Spirits again?”

-Soooo

“I can use it once a month!”

Ah, I see.

Since it’s an ability that influences the entire dungeon, the cooldown was understandably long.

But considering the effect, it was a good deal.

“Alright, now for the big one: the Five Elements Cycle!”

-Soooo

I also wanted to try out Vitality Recharge, but the name was so straightforward that I could guess its effects.

So, I was most excited about the Five Elements Cycle.

-Soooo

“Where should I use it?”

“Oh, it’s a targeted ability!”

I immediately pointed at the unfinished elixir.

If it fails? I can just make another one!

Saaaaa

A divine aura quickly gathered.

Something resembling leaves, whose origin I couldn’t discern, wrapped around the elixir bottle, and soon, tiny flames, small water droplets, and earth-like particles floated around it.

And then…

Plop!

The tiny elements slipped into the bottle.

“Oh?”

Everyone was quietly watching this fascinating scene, but as I glanced around, I noticed Soo confidently putting its hands on its hips.

-Soooo

That pose—looks like it learned it from Ara.

“It’s done!”

“Really? Let’s check it out!”

– Gulp.

A tense moment.

I slowly examined the elixir.

[Elixir of the Five Elements]

[A mysterious potion imbued with the energy of the Five Elements.]

[Upon consumption, greatly increases affinity and resistance to the Five Elements permanently.]

[Upon consumption, can heal critical injuries. (Once per day)]

[Upon consumption, removes all debuffs. (Once per day)]

“Did it work?!”

Though it didn’t have the same impact as when Soo was a millennium-old plant, the important thing was that this could be mass-produced.

Of course, we’ll have to wait for winter.

‘Being able to make a potion that can save a life every six months!’

If you looked closely, the number of effects was fewer compared to the Millennium Ginseng, but if you considered each one individually, the effects were actually better.

– Is it, is it done?

“Yeah!”

– Should I drink it right now?

It was a monumental moment.

But wait a second!

“Hold on, should we call Seon-ah too? I want everyone to see this together!”

– Of course!

I asked Woofy to bring Seon-ah and Mammon over. It didn’t take long before the two arrived together.

“Hello, Mammon!”

– Lord Overlord, at your service!

And Pururuk came along too?

Commander Pururuk and Kongkong, who both looked much more lively than when I first saw them, were nestled in Seon-ah’s arms.

– Ah, ah… Lord Overlord’s parents!

Mammon, who hadn’t been told about my parents, was startled upon seeing them. Flustered, he ended up hiding behind Ara. Quite unexpected.

“Hello there, little one? You must be Mammon?”

“You seem to rely on Ara a lot.”

When my parents extended a hand first, Mammon shyly peeked out.

Then Ara grabbed Mammon and presented him.

“Say hello!”

– Uh, ah, hello!

What a cute little one.

Seeing this, my parents seemed to enjoy Mammon’s endearing awkwardness, smiling warmly.

– Focus!

Frey, who had been distracted, gathered everyone’s attention.

Everyone turned to look at Frey.

– I will now awaken!

“Awaken?”

Oh, Seon-ah had just been brought here by Woofy, so she didn’t seem to know what was going on.

“Watch closely. Frey might soon be able to fly with her own wings.”

“Really?!”

And finally.

Frey began to drink the elixir.

Then a clear change started to appear.

Flash!

A brilliant light burst forth from Frey.

Pop!

“Ugh-”

“Gaaah-”

“Huff-”

It might have been a bit too much.

Aiden glanced around at the knights making barely human sounds, looking somewhat embarrassed.

Some had limbs twisted grotesquely, ribs piercing lungs, or spines contorted.

These injuries were beyond what even superhumans could endure.

‘Wow…’

Honestly, he was quite confident.

After all, it wasn’t just anyone—he had received recognition from the Hero of the Dawn, the Continent’s Hero, who said he would “pull his own weight.”

Even though his powers had weakened, if someone like that vouched for him, Aiden was confident he could continue the fight.

But to this extent? Even Aiden couldn’t have imagined being this overwhelming.

‘It’s like I was trained for this.’

He could feel the meaning of the hero’s words—that he had ‘earned extra lives’ through death—very keenly.

His body, knowing that not acting here would lead to unbearable pain, instinctively found the most efficient movements.

When combined with Meyer’s skill, which analyzed the opponent’s techniques, it allowed Aiden to utterly crush his foes, almost mockingly.

-System Message

Combat actions have ended.

Activation of ‘Skill: Analysis’ is now over.

The bonus for analyzing opponents’ weaknesses has concluded.

▶ The bonus for ‘Turo: One Sword, One Path’ has ended.

The proficiency of less significant martial arts styles has increased.

▶ Skills have not been copied. Points have accumulated.

The ‘Point Store’ will open soon. Just a little more!

‘Nothing was copied…’

Thanks to the analysis skill, he could imitate the knights’ techniques and movements, but they didn’t manifest as another form of Turo.

As always, since they were characters of lower importance in the main scenario, it made sense.

Of course, he wasn’t particularly disappointed.

He already had the far superior Turo of Noel, and the Point Store was about to open.

‘I wonder what’s so good that it’s been hidden this whole time…’

While thinking about that, Aiden scratched his cheek, only to hear a thunderous voice nearby.

“Aiden!”

It was Noel’s voice.

It hadn’t even been a few minutes since Aiden requested backup, but Noel seemed to have already arrived.

“Ah, Noel…”

Just as Aiden was about to turn and greet her, his words were abruptly cut off.

As soon as he saw Noel’s expression as she ran toward him, Aiden instinctively realized something.

…She was angry.

Very, very angry.

Sure enough, the first thing Noel did upon reaching Aiden was to firmly grasp both his shoulders.

The crushing pressure on his shoulders felt like being caught in an industrial vice.

The intensity in Noel’s eyes was so fierce that Aiden could almost see flames burning within them.

“What were you thinking, running off on your own without any backup!”

Aiden’s body involuntarily shrank back at the resounding voice.

“What would you have done if you got hurt! Worse than that, what if something terrible had happened!”

“I had to stop them, or Katia’s side would’ve been in danger.”

“Your chances of dying are much, much higher than theirs!”

“Do you understand? You must never take such risks again! If needed, you should leave me or His Highness behind and think of escaping yourself!”

….

Noel’s expression was like a tiger ready to devour its prey, but every word she said was filled with genuine concern.

And, unfortunately for such a person… No, precisely because of such a person…

“No.”

Even if the other person was angry, Aiden felt he had to say what needed to be said.

With a clear voice, despite blinking in surprise, Aiden responded, “I can’t do that.”

“What do you mean, you can’t—!”

“If Noel was in that kind of situation, I would act the same way.”

“……”

“What’s wrong with helping when Katia or you are in danger?”

There’s a big difference between living a harmonious life and living like a coward.

While Aiden wanted to live harmoniously, he certainly wasn’t a coward.

Katia was his friend, and Noel, despite a rocky start, had consistently shown kindness toward him.

They were people he considered his ‘kin.’

If the people within his fence were threatened, he would charge headfirst to confront that threat.

He had always lived this way, and he intended to continue doing so.

Even if he was the only one aware of the impending dangers of the future, it was still absurd for one person aiming to save the world to carry such a burden alone.

Whether or not it was truly possible, even Aiden didn’t know.

He might fail miserably along the way, die, and the world could end.

Still, his reason for shouldering it all, as always, was small but clear.

“What’s the point of working so hard if I have to abandon everyone I care about and live alone?”

Living alone in this world—what kind of value does that have? What joy or meaning does it bring?

Aiden didn’t mind putting himself in a little danger. He didn’t mind taking some losses.

As long as he could stick together with those he cared about, laughing and living harmoniously, that was enough for him.

Anyone who threatened that idyllic vision, he would crush by any means necessary.

Even though he found himself entangled with extraordinary people, gained remarkable abilities, and somehow ended up having to save the world…

The trajectory of his life had never deviated from that path.

A common man, dreaming of a peaceful life with his family and friends.

And, someone ready to do whatever it took to protect that.

As Aiden continued speaking, Noel’s grip gradually loosened.

She eventually let go of Aiden’s shoulders, standing in silence for a long moment.

And, as Noel’s silence grew, so did the paleness in Aiden’s face.

‘I shouldn’t have talked back…!’

Isn’t this the point right before an explosion?

Did he just make things worse by arguing with an already angry person…?

‘I should’ve been more gentle, even if I had to say it…’

“You are truly a strange person, Aiden.”

Her eyes…

Looked as if she were about to cry.

“Why are you only firm at times like this? When normally, you just want to live like an invisible man.”

….

Aiden blinked awkwardly.

Wait.

Why was the atmosphere like this?

He expected to be scolded for talking back, but instead…

‘Did I just trigger some kind of trauma?’

Indeed, the atmosphere felt similar to when he once asked why she was called the Butcher.

As if his words struck a nerve.

As if she were seeing something in him that she didn’t want to recall.

Eventually, Noel pulled her hat down low. It was a gesture she often made when she didn’t want her expression to be seen.

“Let’s return to headquarters with His Highness. I’ll handle the situation here.”

However, unlike before, this time she seemed determined not to even listen to any explanations.

“Quite a man, that one,” Levant muttered with a wry smile as he was being handcuffed from behind.

“You’ve snagged yourself a decent man, Noel. Seems like you’ve got an eye for people.”

“Which makes it all the clearer why you’re keeping your distance from him.”

“He may be a different gender, but he’s quite like Teresa, isn’t he?”

“…Levant.”

Noel paused for a moment before speaking.

“What were you thinking, doing something like this?”

“I don’t think we were ever the type to worry about each other.”

“We were comrades during the Allied War.”

“At least until Teresa died because of you.”

…

Levant’s voice slowly trailed off as Noel came to a stop.

“Noel Astria Simus, listen well.”

His tone wasn’t just one of accusation; it was mixed with regret and sorrow.

“It should’ve been you who stayed until the end back then, not Teresa. It should’ve been her, not you, returning as the hero of the nation.”

Noel didn’t respond, only continuing to restrain them as if this burden was one she had to bear.

Watching her from his submissive position, Levant let out another dry laugh.

“You’ve changed, Lionheart.”

“What do you mean?”

“You used to lose it at the mere mention of Teresa’s name. Now, you seem more composed.”

Noel managed a bitter smile at Levant’s remark.

Who knows?

Until not too long ago, that was true.

Why, though?

“Married life must really be treating you well, huh?”

…

“It’s your honeymoon phase, after all. I hope he cheats on you.”

Instead of replying, Noel struck the back of his neck, knocking him out cold.

It was a ruthless blow.

It had been a turbulent day.

Upon returning to headquarters, Katia, deep in thought, immediately locked herself in her room, while Aiden collapsed face-first onto his bed after a long day.

‘Those knights,’ Noel had said as she restrained them and handed them over to the prosecution, were being sent straight to trial.

They would likely face severe punishment.

While there was no concrete evidence to track down who orchestrated it, she had a hunch.

-Skill Info

Fate Weaver

+Arden Brimstone Lionel

–

Malice: Level 1

–

You can imitate one skill.

※ Cannot establish a ‘bond’ with the target. The skill’s effect will differ from the original!

There was only one person who could possess such clear malice.

The attack could only be interpreted as a deliberate attempt to trouble Aiden.

‘If that’s the case…’

With narrowed eyes, Aiden glared at the window before him.

If the other side was going to openly act hostile, he wasn’t going to just sit back and take it.

He needed to prepare countermeasures.

But of course, there was something more urgent right now.

-Quest Info

Main Quest

Act 1, <Crack in the Capital>

Chapter 1 will commence soon!

The related event will proceed soon. (D-1)

Sham Marriage

– You have been chosen as Noel’s spouse.

Maintain the contract with your partner until the end!

–  The related event will soon take place. (D-1)

“-Hmm.”

Aiden’s eyes narrowed further as he looked at the window in front of him. They were so narrowed that wrinkles started to form around them.

This is a world without the protagonist. Assuming everything will proceed according to the original flow is absurd.

Surely, something unexpected will happen.

In that case, it’s best to set up at least one ‘insurance.’

Apart from conserving strength, there is at least one action that will be directly helpful in the upcoming event.

“Hmph.”

Exhaling through his nose, Aiden stepped out into the hallway.

Most people, including the workaholic Noel, had already left for the day, but there was always someone who worked even later.

Arriving at his destination, Aiden knocked on the office door.

“Come in.”

Upon hearing the tired voice, Aiden gently opened the door and stepped inside.

Despite being overwhelmed with work, Stella was still typing away mechanically at the typewriter.

“Aiden? What brings you here at this hour?”

As they rarely had personal contact, Stella raised her eyebrows curiously.

Indeed, the scene was rather unusual, especially considering what he was about to say to her.

“Lady Stella.”

“Yes, what is it?”

“Would you like to go out with me?”

Stella frowned and glanced out the window.

It was well past dusk, in the pitch-black early morning hours.

… No matter how you think about it, it’s a strange request to make to a woman at this time of night.

“It seems quite late for going out…?”

“It is, isn’t it?”

“I’m glad you understand. If it’s urgent, you should report it to Lady Noel and request appropriate support.”

“No, it has to be you.”

“…..”

“I’d prefer if it were just the two of us.”

Stella promptly spat out the coffee she had been drinking.
