Patron 51

Kellam, a wizard from the Green Tower, and the man who had witnessed Penia, once notorious as the “rogue” of the Blue Tower, behave like a meek lamb in front of Count Palatio, was still processing what he’d seen the day before.

Penia had even apologized to Milan, Kellam’s apprentice, and a fellow wizard.

But Kellam, a 5th-tier wizard, had his suspicions about Count Palatio from the beginning.

Specifically, he doubted the count’s strength.

Of course, Kellam hadn’t yet reached the 6th tier, where the “Eye” is opened, allowing one to fully grasp another’s strength with just a glance.

However, even at the 5th tier, his senses were sharp enough to detect a person’s magic power.

And in Kellam’s eyes, Count Palatio’s magical energy was too weak.

Kellam knew that knowledge was essential for wizards — no matter how large one’s mana pool, it meant nothing without the knowledge to wield magic.

However, no matter how exceptional one’s knowledge was, it wouldn’t be possible to use magic if their inherent magical power was too small.

Naturally, this raised questions in Kellam’s mind.

Was it possible that the rumors surrounding the count’s strength were all exaggerated, created by the man himself to elevate his own reputation?

Kellam had almost reconsidered his doubts after witnessing Penia’s sudden change in behavior, but today, at the arena, his suspicions were confirmed again.

There was no mistake.

Count Palatio’s magical power was far too meager to be the subject of such grandiose rumors.

And it wasn’t just Kellam who harbored these doubts.

“Hmm, no matter how I look at it, I can’t sense much strength from him. What do you think?”

“I feel the same way. His mana pool is… far too small for someone of a high tier.”

“Tch, so it was all nonsense. Looks like he fabricated it all to build up his prestige.”

“Pity. His reputation will be completely shattered after this friendly match reveals everything.”

Just as Kellam had thought, the other professor-level wizards at the 5th tier, gathered with him, expressed their doubts after sensing Count Palatio’s magic.

But before the arena was engulfed in the frozen wasteland, all the wizards fell silent.

Even the lower-tier wizards, who had been watching with curious expressions, became quiet.

On the contrary, the 5th-tier wizards who had been casting suspicious glances at Alon now stood dumbfounded with their mouths agape, watching the unfolding events.

Yet the emotions the wizards felt were not all the same.

The lower-tier wizards gazed at Alon’s magic with awe and reverence, while the higher-tier wizards were utterly shocked.

It all happened in an instant, but they knew exactly what Alon had done.

“Composite magic…! And more than three spells… at once!”

Kellam’s jaw dropped.

Of course, composite magic was something even he could perform, and any 5th-tier wizard present could do the same.

However, to flawlessly execute three or more spells at once, without a single error, was something no one could guarantee.

“How in the world did he do it?”

By now, the 5th-tier wizards had already erased the thought that Count Palatio’s magic was insignificant.

Instead, their minds were filled with the same curiosity and respect for Alon that had driven them to rise to the 5th tier.

And just as all eyes were focused on the arena:

“Crystal.”

Alon quietly muttered the word, forming a seal with his hand.

At that moment—

Crack—!

Dozens of small spheres, each about the size of a marble, began forming across the entire arena.

“Rotation.”

The spheres, which had been hovering in mid-air, began to slowly rotate clockwise.

Just as the wizards were wondering about the purpose of these spinning spheres—

“Eek!”

Baruch, who had been startled by Alon’s magic, finally snapped out of it and hurriedly began preparing his own spells.

If he failed to act now, he realized that not only would he fail to expand his influence, but he could end up embarrassing himself, so he hurriedly prepared a spell.

However, the other wizards either expressed confusion or frowned as they watched Baruch’s spell preparation.

“That’s—”

…Ke-Malan?

It was understandable, as the spell Baruch was preparing to use was one of the Violet Tower’s main offensive spells, a blatant killing spell not typically used in friendly matches.

Yet, Baruch never got to fire his spell.

Crack—!

In the next instant, Baruch was turned into an ice statue.

All the wizards stared blankly, recalling what had just happened.

In the very moment when Baruch had been preparing his spell, one of the rotating small spheres suddenly burst, turning Baruch into an ice statue.

And with that—

“…Uh, um… The winner of this friendly match is Alon Palatio…!”

The referee wizard announced in a bewildered voice.

***

“That was truly remarkable.”

“By the way, what was that seal you just used? Could it be an ancient spell?”

“He used composite magic, but how exactly did he structure that arrangement?”

Immediately after the friendly match ended, Alon, who had ascended to the stands leaving the dumbfounded Baruch behind, was bombarded with questions from the wizards.

Of course, there were no wizards who dared to break the unwritten rule of not asking about independent magic, but the flood of questions made Alon realize something surprising.

Through the conversation, he came to understand that the wizards had no knowledge of the seals or phrases he used.

‘…How curious.’

Alon had been aware that the seals and phrases he used were relics of a long-forgotten era.

However, he hadn’t expected there to be absolutely no information on them at all, which made the discovery even more intriguing.

As he absorbed this newfound realization while conversing with the wizards, Alon’s attention shifted.

“…Wait, what did you say? 3rd tier?”

“…Did you just say 3rd tier?”

“There’s no need for modesty, claiming to be at the 3rd tier.”

“That’s impossible.”

The wizards treated Alon’s admission of his tier as a joke.

Leaving behind the bemused wizards, Alon exited the arena with a sigh, though the moment was brief.

He began fiddling with the ring on his left index finger, an item in the Psychedelia game called “Memory of the Black Eye(Ho Gaftu),” with a satisfied expression.

‘As expected, it’s quite useful.’

The ability of “Memory of the Black Eye” was simple.

It allowed the user to store one of their spells and use it later with a slight boost in power.

In short, it was like an enhanced memory-keeper spell, storing a spell for future use with added amplification, and for Alon, it was highly efficient.

Due to the restriction he faced, Alon could only cast five spells, and the harsh environment where he had to use one of those spells was a significant disadvantage.

After using that spell, he would be left with only two usable spells.

But by using “Memory of the Black Eye,” Alon could now use all five spells in combat situations.

‘And the spell amplification is quite strong as well.’

He recalled that when he had used a spell earlier, the effect of the harsh cold felt at least twice as powerful as usual, then quickly shifted his thoughts.

‘It seems that the [Glory of the Snowy Mountains] is quite good.’

Reflecting on the spell he had just used, based on the phrase “Glory of the Snowy Mountains,” Alon couldn’t help but think once again about the mysterious “thing.”

When “it” had first informed him of that phrase, Alon hadn’t fully grasped the meaning.

At the time, the phrases in his mind were understood only as tools to enhance his magic, without a deeper understanding.

However, after using the spell based on “Glory of the Snowy Mountains” several times since returning from the desert, he had recently come to understand what kind of effect that phrase generally had.

‘When the manifestation of the materialized magic ends, it freezes the surrounding air.’

Unlike twisting or distorting the nature of the magic itself, this effect seemed more like it was touching upon a fundamental law, and Alon had used this to implement his spell today.

‘Is this what ‘it’ was referring to?’

He recalled hearing that “a phrase is like a key that can open certain doors to the rules designated in this world.”

…He found this increasingly fascinating.

The more Alon learned about phrases and words, the more his magic advanced at a rapid pace, fueling his growing curiosity. Glancing outside the tower, he noticed the view.

The sun was just now hanging on the mountainside, casting the sky in the colors of sunset.

‘It’s about time, I suppose.’

As Alon watched the slowly sinking sun, he remembered the other item he needed to retrieve from the central tower today and turned to leave.

***

The first night of the society.

“That Count?”

“What is it?”

“Are you really… a 3rd-tier wizard?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Oh… I’ll keep that in mind then.”

Liyan, who seemed utterly disbelieving of Alon’s words, left with a doubtful expression.

“Count… Count?”

“Penia?”

“I know for sure that you’re a 3rd-tier wizard.”

“…Is that so?”

“Yes, I absolutely know that you’re a 3rd-tier wizard… absolutely, without a doubt!”

“…?”

After Penia emphasized Alon’s tier three times and left, Alon noticed that it was late at night and headed to the library, confirming that the moon was already in the sky.

Wooooom~!

With a low, resonating hum, he arrived at the empty, silent library again.

The eerie atmosphere was enhanced by the absence of lights, with only the blue moon in the sky casting light over the library.

As he entered the library, a deep voice echoed in his ears:

[It seems that someone has managed to solve my riddle at just the right time.]

The voice’s solemn resonance caused Alon to shiver involuntarily.

It wasn’t that he sensed anything in particular—just an instinctual trembling.

Like how the weak naturally tremble before the strong, simply hearing the voice evoked a creeping fear from deep within.

“Yes.”

Alon answered, forcibly suppressing his rising fear.

After all, the item he needed could only be obtained by meeting her.

And then—

[Oh, impressive. Despite hearing my voice, you didn’t panic. You’ve held your ground.]

As the blue magical energy began gathering in front of Alon, slowly taking shape, he felt sweat forming on his palms.

He knew exactly who was about to appear before him.

‘The first human to reach the 8th tier after the Age of Forgotten Gods.’

‘A wizard whom every magician revered and admired during her lifetime, known as the “First Chalice.”‘

And to the beings who once wreaked havoc on the world, she was known as the “Eternal Terror,” a slayer feared and worshipped.

“…The Archmage Heinkel.”

As Alon muttered her name, the blue magical form solidified rapidly.

Before him stood a woman wearing a pure white pointed hat, her blue eyes visible underneath, and a relaxed smile on her face.

To the wizards, she was the “First Chalice.”

To the beings that had once thrown the world into chaos, she was the “Eternal Terror.”

Alon swallowed nervously behind his calm expression.

While Heinkel wasn’t an enemy, if he made even a slight mistake in his answers, he could trigger her infamous temper, which might result in his immediate death.

Thus, Alon mentally reviewed the things he absolutely must not say or bring up in front of her.

The first words the archmage, who exuded an overwhelming aura just by appearing with her relaxed smile, spoke as she gazed at Alon were:

[Wha…!?]

A sound of terror, as though she had seen something horrifying.

“…??”

A question formed in Alon’s mind.

Round 169

Prev | TOC | Next

The ability of the Oyster was underwater breathing. Thanks to this, as soon as the next day arrived, I began harvesting seafood in the shallow sea with Ara.

“There are so many.” Even in the shallow parts, we found so much, so how much more diverse and abundant would the resources be in the deeper areas? Excited for a while, I started gathering various things indiscriminately, and Soo started grumbling.

“Sooooo!”

“What’s wrong, Ara? What’s it saying?”

“It says there are too many.”

When I came to my senses, I saw a heap of seafood piled up. Isn’t this much okay to take?

“Fish!”

“Oh, if I consider the fish, it might be cutting it close.”

Because there’s always so much to carry, there wasn’t as much leeway as I thought. If I were to catch just one fish, it wouldn’t matter, but since I came all the way here, I should catch a few.

Eventually, we stopped gathering seafood here and resumed fishing like yesterday. And once again, Ara’s fishing rod bent first. It seemed luck was on Ara’s side when it came to fishing.

“Eung-cha!”

But this time, unlike yesterday, she quickly pulled it up without struggling.

It was a mackerel about the size of my forearm.

Its back was blue, so I called it a mackerel, but its shape was a bit different. Were there more fins?

“Oh, then is this a red-fleshed fish?”

The giant cutlassfish we ate yesterday was a white-fleshed fish. But this one looked like a red-fleshed fish. Since white and red-fleshed fish taste different, I was looking forward to it.

“Oh, now it’s my turn!”

The fishing line was pulled taut. A bite came in while I was preparing Ara’s gear!

To show Ara my impressive skills, I carefully handled the fishing rod…

Shraaak!

“Huh?”

Contrary to my tense anticipation, the fishing line came in too easily, but it was clear that something heavy was caught. Could it come in so easily?

Soon, the identity of what was caught revealed itself as I reeled in the line.

“What is this?”

It was a giant crayfish.

It had a light purple shell and was about the size of a slime. Roughly half an arm’s length. This refers to its body diameter, so its length was even greater. A crayfish large enough to slightly surpass Ara’s height.

“Crayfish? Shrimp? What do I call this?”

Somewhere between a crayfish and a shrimp? It did have a claw, but only one.

Anyway, unlike fish, it didn’t resist much and was pulled onto land. It only started flapping around vigorously once it was out of the water.

Whack!

Then once again, Ara’s punch came into play.

The punch accurately hit and effectively knocked the crayfish out.

“Wow.”

Holding up the fainted crayfish, its size was much more appreciable. It was quite heavy, and if I weren’t an Awakener, I might not have been able to lift it alone.

“First, let’s secure the claw…”

I tied up the claw to prevent it from opening. The size of the claw was also intimidating, and if it pinched me, it wouldn’t be pleasant.

While securing another trophy, Ara once again pulled her fishing rod. This time, it seemed to be quite a fighter, much like the cutlassfish we caught yesterday.

If it were on my rod, I might have been dragged away instead.

Ara is incredibly strong, surpassing even the physical abilities of a Level 4, no, probably a Level 5 now, physical-type Awakener. Seeing Ara cautiously exerting strength suggested that it was indeed a remarkable fish. Of course, aside from strength, she was careful because the rod could break.

A struggle that lasted about 10 minutes.

And once again, Ara succeeded splendidly.

“Wow, what is this this time?”

A giant fish was caught, different from yesterday’s catch but similar in size.

However, it had a peculiar appearance, resembling a mix between an anglerfish and a flatfish, looking rather unattractive.

“Hehe.”

But that made it even more exciting. It’s already proven on Earth that ugly fish taste good. This one looks delicious just by the looks of it!

Afterward, Ara and I each caught one more fish and packed up our things.

One giant crayfish.

One anglerfish-flatfish.

One long fish that looked like a cutlassfish.

And one giant sea bream.

We laughed joyfully as we packed our four catches.

“This is going to be delicious!”

“Let’s eat it with the family. Share it with the kids too.”

“Yeah!”

Soo was already drooling.

Even though the amount was small, Soo had already learned what deliciousness meant.

‘Seon-ah will love this.’

Seon-ah, who can’t resist cute things, would go wild seeing Soo. She’ll probably spend all day carrying a camera, filming Ara and Soo’s daily life.

Checking the minimap, Mammon was at the Goblin Village. It would be nice if Seon-ah could also be registered as a minimap icon, which is a bit disappointing.

“Shall we head back?”

“Let’s go! It’s our loot!”

-Sooo!

Like a triumphant general after winning a war, Ara shouted while pointing toward the direction of the Slime Village.

Watching Ara, Soo didn’t know what was happening but decided to imitate her.

These cute little ones.

It was a short trip, but there were many things to do once we returned.

First, I needed to go out and check if there were any pending messages, and then I had to fully understand Soo’s abilities.

I never thought that the Millennium Ginseng would turn into a spirit and become a familiar, so I might need to consider other ways to solve Frey’s curse.

But maybe…

[Lee Soo (Spirit of the Five Elements)]

Abilities: Five Elements Cycle, Vitality Recharge, Blessing of the Spirits.

There might be an answer among those abilities, so it was too soon to jump to conclusions. For now, I didn’t have the unfinished elixir with me, so I couldn’t test the abilities,

‘I can roughly guess what Vitality Recharge does, but I’m curious about the other two.’

Maybe one of those two could be the key to solving Frey’s curse.

***

Almost ten hours had passed since we rode Woofy.

Finally, we could return.

Snooze snooze-.

Ara and Soo were dangling and sleeping in my arms. Despite taking breaks in between, they must have found it quite boring.

“Kids, we’re here.”

“Hmm…”

-Sooo!

The slimes were the first to get off and were greeted by the children. It seemed as if they were reporting on how they managed the fields diligently while we were away.

“Mark2, good job.”

Squelch!

In the end, there was no reason to bring Mark2, but thanks to him, we had a fun time.

Next time, I’ll take Poispois with us as well. By now, it must be diligently managing the Meluca flowers.

First, I planned to quickly organize our luggage and then go find Seon-ah. As we were organizing our stuff, there was some bustling activity on one side.

-Bwee.

-Hehe.

Soo was surrounded and being interrogated by the slimes and squishy creatures. And in the center of it all was Gomgom.

-Kwoong.

Gomgom, tense at the appearance of the unfamiliar Soo, soon spread its arms wide as if to threaten.

-Kwong.

-Sooo?

But Soo, seeing Gomgom, tilted her head and, perhaps out of curiosity, approached and poked it instead.

-K, Kwong?

-Sooo.

Gomgom, startled, soon lowered its arms. Then it hugged Soo.

Could that be…

A preliminary move for a suplex?!

The tremendous scene of lifting its back and slamming down backward didn’t unfold.

-Sniff sniff kwong.

-Sooo.

It was just a simple hug.

Since when did they bond so deeply?

The two soon began to walk around the village arm in arm as if they had known each other for a long time.

Gomgom started introducing the village.

And as Ara watched the scene with sleepy eyes, she mumbled.

“Gomgom has become a big brother.”

The world of children is hard to understand. Anyway, it’s a relief that they’re getting along well. Seeing that Purr isn’t here, it seems he’s gone to Seon-ah. I gave a slightly apologetic look to the Woofy who had traveled far and asked for another favor.

“Woofy, can you bring Seon-ah over?”

-Woof!

Woofy wagged its tail as if it was no problem and quickly ran off. As expected of a high-rank monster, its stamina is incredible.

While Woofy went to fetch Seon-ah, I finished organizing the luggage and checked the meju scattered around the village.

‘Isn’t this almost fermented?’

I said almost, but it seemed like it was complete. I should bring my mother over and have her verify it.

For now, I left it as it was and checked the jars and charcoal I had prepared on one side. I was already excited about making doenjang and soy sauce!

-Woof!

-Neigh.

Woofy and Purr signaled that they had arrived. I stopped inspecting the jars and went out to see Ara being held by Seon-ah.

“Did our Ara have a good trip?”

“Yes! It was fun! I caught a lot of fish and clams! I also brought Soo!”

“Really? That sounds fun. But what’s Soo?”

Then, as if called, Soo waddled over, led by Gomgom’s foot. With a plump body and a cute appearance befitting a spirit.

-Sooo.

And that unique cry.

As expected, Seon-ah was completely captivated.

“W-w-who are you?”

-Sooo?

-Kwoong!

Gomgom pulled Soo closer to Seon-ah as if to say hello. Soo tilted his head, looked up at Seon-ah, and started spinning around her.

-Sooo, Sooo, Sooo.

-Hehe.

Before long, Kkumuris joined in, spinning around like Soo. Thanks to this, Seon-ah’s eyes spun in circles too.

“It’s a new family member. Its name is Lee Soo.”

“Lee, Lee Soo?”

In the end, Seon-ah couldn’t resist and grabbed the mischievous herb root that was circling her.

-Sooo.

Soo let out a sound like a doll when caught. She then gazed at Seon-ah with bright eyes.

-Sooo!

“Why do such cute beings always gather around you, brother? Did you save a country in your past life?”

“Probably something like that.”

I formally introduced Soo. The story of the Millennium Ginseng we planted last time evolving into a spirit, and how Soo, as a spirit, became a familiar.

Listening to the story, Seon-ah looked amazed and then started touching Soo all over in fascination.

-Sooo.

Every time, Soo cried out like a sound-emitting doll.

“Soo is my little brother!”

“I’m glad you have a cute brother, Ara.”

“Yeah!”

Unlike my surprise, Seon-ah naturally continued the conversation. Her skill was different.

“Nothing happened while we were away?”

“Yeah. It was just normal.”

“Still, you did well. Now you can rest.”

“Me? I’m resting now.”

Seon-ah was hugging Soo, Ara, and Gomgom tightly. Seeing her filled with desire, I nodded.

She’s resting better than anyone.

“Take care of the kids. I’ll step out for a bit.”

“Where are you going?”

“Just checking if there are any missed messages.”

Then Ara suddenly got up.

“I’m going too!”

“Really? How about you get some fresh air outside, Ara?”

Deciding to go out with Ara, I left the kids with Seon-ah. I’ll feed them the seafood we brought back later.

As we headed to the infinite dungeon, I saw its empty interior. No, there was a slime squirming around.

Squirm?

A slime is summoned every day.

I decided to take it back with us and greeted Rookie.

“Hello?”

Squirm!

As expected, a Rookie! Full of energy!

Ara also petted the slime once and came outside.

Since the travel time was long, it was already evening outside.

It was time to sleep, but I needed to check if I missed any messages before going to bed.

“Hm!?”

At that moment, Ara’s ears perked up, and she looked around. Her eyes then flashed with a mysterious light.

“Ara?”

“I found it!”

Found what?

In that instant, Ara swiftly moved and grabbed something in mid-air.

Thud!

“Ugh!”

“Huh?”

What I thought was empty air turned out to be a person.

And Ara, having subdued the person, shouted at me.

“Tag! Got it!”

He had a rough idea that Noel had a hobby of collecting alcohol. After all, even her office is decorated with various kinds of liquor. But he had never heard of her indulging to the point of getting this drunk.

“What brings you to my room?”

Surprisingly, despite the situation, she still retained enough composure to hold a conversation. Sitting at the edge of the bed, lightly shaking the glass in her hand with a gentle smile, it’s a softness that’s impossible to imagine from her usual demeanor.

‘She’s kind of cute when she’s drunk.’

Normally, she’s so rigid that you could describe her as stiff, but with the atmosphere softened like this, the contrast makes he sreem almost cheerful.

“Uh…”

Just as Aiden opened his mouth to say something, his words were cut off by the sudden placement of a glass in front of him, with a strong-smelling liquor being poured in.

“Aiden, how about a drink?”

“I’ll pass.”

“Oh, why not?”

Correction: it’s not that she’s cute when drunk, it’s just that her drinking habits are terrible. Maybe it’s the backlash from living life like a model soldier straight out of a textbook. Still, she didn’t press further, and instead, she downed the glass that had been set aside for Aiden in one gulp. That’s typical of her—never crossing the line, always wrapped up in kindness and responsibility.

“Was everything alright yesterday and today?”

“…Pardon?”

“You’re my responsibility since I brought you here. If anything happens, you must let me know.”

Even when she’s terribly drunk, the kind of things she says still match that impression.

“Lady Noel.”

“Yes?”

“Why do they call you the Butcher?”

Honestly, he couldn’t help but be curious. How did she come to earn such an ill-fitting nickname?

Noel’s movements suddenly froze.

‘That was rude.’

Thinking back, the prince had used that term to pressure her at the banquet, and Katia also threw it in her face to get under her skin. It’s undoubtedly an uncomfortable term for her. But if the question is bound to be rude no matter how it’s asked, Aiden preferred to just ask it outright.

After a long pause, Noel finally spoke, her voice heavy.

“Because I killed the most on the battlefield.”

“That’s an honorable feat for a soldier, isn’t it?”

“Because I killed anyone.”

“…”

“If they held a weapon and wanted to keep fighting… anyone, it didn’t matter.”

Noel trailed off and poured more liquor into her glass. The unsaid part of her words was easy to infer. It’s not hard to imagine.

The Allied War was the largest all-out war in the continent’s history, where every nation fought for survival. And when a desperate country is on the brink of defeat, the first things to go are ethics and morality. It’s easy to guess what such a country would do to hold out for even a little longer. Conscripts who had barely received proper training, people who used to hold books or tools instead of weapons, even child soldiers were forced into the fight.

As a knight on the battlefield, Noel must have cut them all down.

The “Lionheart.” A title given to knights who led the charge, breaking through enemy lines at the forefront of battle. But in retrospect, it’s also a story about someone who excelled at being a human butcher. The infamous nickname “Butcher,” which seems to change her demeanor every time she hears it, must feel like salt in a wound. It’s understandable that she drinks herself into oblivion. Every time she hears that word, the things she wanted to forget, the nightmares gathering dust in the corner of her memory, must come rushing back all at once.

“When battles drag on too long…”

Noel poured more liquor, and Aiden’s eyes followed her hands.

“…the number of people dying just keeps increasing…”

Shaking, trembling uncontrollably. Barely managing to maintain composure.

Her face had turned pale white, and her eyes kept twitching.

She had endured through all the drinking up until now, but the moment this topic came up, it seemed like even holding her body upright was a struggle.

“If everyone just feared me, then at least more people would surrender.”

The “Lionheart,” a brave butcher of men.

The butcher who slayed all who dared to challenge.

“I ran ahead, killed the most, hoping to end the battle a little faster… to save even a few more lives…”

Noel rambled, clearly unaware of what she was even saying.

Her hands, trembling as if from tremors, wouldn’t stop shaking.

The pungent smell of alcohol overwhelmed the air as she poured more into the glass.

“Um, that, so…”

“Yes.”

Just before the glass overflowed, Aiden grabbed her wrist.

“I understand.”

Noel blinked blankly.

“You’ve been through a lot.”

Aiden continued speaking calmly, undeterred.

“I don’t think this is a conversation to have when you’re not even thinking straight, so let’s keep it short.”

Just as the prince had said before, Noel might have done terrible things in the chaos of war.

There had been some incident between the prince, her mentor—the national protector—and her, which Aiden now vaguely understood.

But even so, there was only one conclusion Aiden could draw from Noel’s intentions and actions.

“You’ve been through a lot.”

“I really don’t have anything else to say.”

Noel stared at Aiden with wide eyes for a long time.

For a long, long moment.

As if something in her mind had just cleared up.

“…Thank you.”

Her voice, full of awkwardness, finally escaped.

Then—

“Wait, no—”

Before Aiden could stop her, Noel downed the entire glass of strong liquor in one gulp.

It was as though she couldn’t bear the delicate atmosphere anymore and decided to sever her consciousness entirely.

And indeed, it seemed like the final blow, as Noel collapsed onto the bed, unconscious.

Aiden sighed.

“I’ll protect you, Aiden~”

Noel mumbled in her sleep, and Aiden quietly pulled the blanket over her.

“…Oh boy.”

While Katia’s problem might be that her mental age was blatantly young, Noel was too harsh on herself.

Aiden glanced around the room.

“…I guess I should clean up a bit.”

It was probably necessary to maintain her usual image.

-System Message

You have successfully handled the side quest with wisdom.

▶ Noel Astria Simus’ affinity has increased.

▶ Your bond level has risen from 5 to 6.

You have gained an additional skill copy usage!

▶ Your bond has grown significantly.

The way “Weaver of Fate” operates will soon change!

At least the conversation, despite being under the influence, seemed to have helped lift Noel’s spirits.

‘…I have three copies of Noel’s skills.’

He hadn’t used any yet, so they had been piling up.

Now, there were already three.

Two from Katia, one from the prince that remained unused, and with the unopened “skill shop,” there was plenty of room to grow.

‘At this rate… I guess I’ve almost gathered all the “ingredients” needed to handle the upcoming Phantom Knight incident in Act 1.’

His battle skills, the “culinary skills” needed to “cook” those ingredients, were still quite lacking, though.

The silver lining was that there were signs of steady growth.

***

“You’re dying a bit less,”  Meyer said, sheathing his sword.

His voice was surprisingly cheerful for someone who had just sliced Aiden in two.

“You only died about 80 times today, didn’t you?”

“I’ve rarely seen anyone improve this fast in just a few days.”

Aiden lay on the ground, silently glaring at Meyer.

‘This is ridiculous.’

Honestly, there was no way to deal with him. Even when he tried using pure energy to enhance his physical abilities, wielded divinity to intimidate, and deployed magic to escape, nothing worked. His energy was torn apart like cardboard, his divinity scattered as if it were mere embers, and he wasn’t even given enough time to focus on casting his spells. He’d get close, and then he’d be cut in two.

Die, die, and die again.

It was baffling how someone who clearly wasn’t fighting seriously could manage such feats.

The funny thing is, the improvement Meyer spoke of wasn’t a lie. On the first day, Aiden had died over a hundred times. And Aiden knew exactly why.

-System Message

The effect of ‘Skill: Analysis’ has activated.

▶ Target ‘Meyer Belford’s combat skills are equal to this skill’s level. Style analysis is not possible!

▶ A function to analyze the target’s weaknesses has been added.

▶ An efficient counter-strategy will be automatically learned.

Since he had borrowed the analysis skill from Meyer, even though he couldn’t fully grasp his style, he had been steadily learning how to counter it. As a result, Aiden’s body seemed to be automatically absorbing the methods to deal with Meyer, engraining them into his muscle memory. And with no choice but to immediately put those methods into practice, the learning efficiency was terrifyingly high.

Despite all these advantages, though, the gap between him and Meyer was so vast that his head would still roll every time.

As these thoughts crossed his mind, his body, which had been split in half, stitched itself back together. In this mental realm, no matter how many times he died, his body would recover this quickly. The first time, it made him shudder with disgust, but after dying hundreds of times over the span of a few days, he had more or less gotten used to it.

“…But, is it really necessary to feel every single sensation this vividly, even if it’s just training?”

It wasn’t an exaggeration—each death felt vividly real. Whether he was split in two by a sword, burned by divinity, torn apart by energy, or turned into a pincushion by magic, every death felt unbearably authentic.

“It’s necessary.”

Meyer answered firmly, his voice resolute.

“Listen, rookie. Do you know why I became a great knight, one whose name is etched in history?”

“…No?”

“Because I made sure my training was even more brutal than real combat.”

“The hellish training I went through optimized everything, and now I’m personally teaching you one-on-one. So don’t complain—it’s all necessary.”

‘…Well, his words made sense.’

But still, Aiden couldn’t help but feel like he was just suffering through it. He kept getting sliced in half over and over again by Meyer.

“When I say you’ve improved a lot, it’s not an empty compliment.”

“…Excuse me?”

“Trust me. If you were thrown into a real fight right now, you’d at least hold your own.”

“On what basis?”

What kind of training was this where all he did was get split apart? How was this supposed to teach him anything?

“That’s the key point.”

Meyer’s words hit him as if he had read Aiden’s mind.

“You’ve experienced countless ways to die over the past few days, haven’t you?”

“…Yes.”

“Well, consider that like earning yourself extra lives.”

“You can doubt me all you want, but it’s the truth.”

“It just feels like I’m being tortured…”

“No.” Meyer grinned wickedly. “It’s not just torture. It’s *valuable* torture.”

At least he admitted it was torture.

And when you go through such experiences every night, naturally, someone would ask:

“Aiden, are you getting enough sleep?”

In his office, Noel asked him, her voice filled with concern. Seeing Aiden looking more and more worn out each day, anyone would worry.

“Yes, somehow.”

“If there’s anything making you uncomfortable, please let me know. I’ll make sure to address it.”

“I’m fine.”

Unfortunately, it was something no one could help him with. No matter how aware he was that he wasn’t actually dying, and no matter how much he understood it was all simulated, repeatedly experiencing such things couldn’t be good for his mental health. His body might be fine, but his mind felt like it was being pushed to the limit every day, shriveling up in the process.

Still, Noel didn’t seem satisfied with his answer. She pursed her lips and gave him a concerned look. Aiden forced a smile to reassure her, trying to convey that he was okay. Noel, however, shook her head.

After holding each other’s gaze for a moment, Noel seemed to gather herself, as if she had something more to say.

“Aiden.”

“Yes?”

She glanced at him nervously, biting her lip.

“You came to my room once when I was drunk, didn’t you?”

“I did.”

“Did I… do something inappropriate then?”

‘…So she didn’t remember anything from that night.’

“I’ve heard I’m quite the handful when I’m drunk.”

It seemed like she had no memory of what had happened that night at all.

Should he consider this fortunate or unfortunate?

‘Well…’

Maybe he should call it a bit inappropriate. She did show several sides of herself that she would normally never reveal.

“…No.”

Aiden scratched his cheek and voiced his honest thoughts. Wanting to ease her worries, he tried to put it in the best light possible.

“If I had to say, it was kind of cute.”

“Lady Noel?”

“Lady Noel…?”

There was no reply. Noel stubbornly pressed her lips together, pulling her hat down lower as she shifted her gaze to her desk. However, the flush that crept up to the tips of her ears was impossible to hide.

“Aiden.”

After a long, silent moment, Noel glared at him with a look of mild resentment.

“That’s forbidden.”

“Please refrain from making such remarks.”

“Did it bother you?”

“It didn’t bother me, but it’s still forbidden.”

“If you think about it, it was kind of nice, but still, don’t say it.”

Why was it forbidden?

Even in the midst of it all, her honest admission that she actually liked it seemed so like her.

‘Turns out she’s more vulnerable to compliments than I thought.’

Considering her position, it’s rare to find someone like her who’s easily affected by praise. The more he learns about her, the stranger she seems…

“Aiden, Lady Noel!”

Before he could delve deeper into his thoughts, the door to the office suddenly flew open. It was Stella, her usual composed demeanor replaced with an urgent expression.

“Lady Stella? What happened—”

“Lady Katia has gone missing!”

Aiden jumped from his seat, alarmed.

Round 168

Whoosh!

Through Bokkeum, I took out the firewood I had set aside and lit it. Soon, a small campfire was completed, and I placed a metal plate on top of it and put seafood on it.

Sizzle!

As soon as I drizzled some oil, the delicious sizzling sound could be heard. I then started stir-frying tomatoes, carrots, eggplants, bell peppers, and potatoes that I had brought.

Seafood and Vegetable Iron Plate Stir-Fry!

There were some unidentified seafood, but everything was safe to eat.

[Gluttony’s Oyster]

[Gluttony’s Scallop]

[Gluttony’s Clam]

[Gluttony’s Abalone]

[Gluttony’s Blue Crab]

[Gluttony’s Shrimp]

and so on.

Even among the same seafood, some were items and some were not, just like my crops. However, the important thing was that I confirmed they were safe to eat.

For example, even if there were item crabs and non-item crabs, I had already confirmed that the item crab was safe to eat, so I could eat them without worry. After all, they were the same crabs.

…There won’t be any problems later because I named them so carelessly, right?

The names that were marked with question marks were ones I arbitrarily made up. It shouldn’t matter.

“Ooooh.”

Squeak.

Ara and Soo watched in amazement as the food cooked on the iron plate. In the meantime, I placed a giant mackerel fillet that I had prepared in advance in the middle of the plate.

Sizzle!

The oil from the iron plate soon started to be ladled over the fish. The mild and savory aroma began to spread all around.

Gulp

Without realizing it, I swallowed my saliva.

Just by the looks of it, it was incredible, wasn’t it?

Snap!

Soon, the shells that Ara had collected began to open. They were roughly finished with purging, so I took out the oysters that were cooked first.

Bubble bubble.

The oyster broth contained in the shell was gently boiling. The white and plump oysters were cooked just right, making them look tempting to eat right away.

“Soo goes first.”

Squeak?

When I picked up the oyster with chopsticks, Ara gave way.

“I’ve already eaten a lot!”

While gathering, Ara was munching on them, shells and all. Ara, who could eat anything, roamed the sea like a fish in water, devouring everything.

“But can Soo eat this?”

“Hmm!”

Ara pondered deeply while looking at Soo. Soo just tilted his head at us, then opened his mouth wide.

The jiggly oyster held with chopsticks entered Soo’s mouth. The sight of a herbivore eating an oyster was… quite rare.

Chew chew.

Unexpectedly, Soo ate the oyster without any issue. Then he nodded greatly, indicating that it was delicious.

Squeak!

“It’s tasty!”

Ara cheered with a bright smile. It seemed Soo could eat food quite well, even though he hadn’t tried it before.

In the empty space on the iron plate, I placed a new oyster that Ara had gathered. Even though the iron plate was quite large, considering Ara and the slimes, I had to keep moving.

Sizzle.

I placed the cooked seafood and vegetables on separate plates. The kids started eating them deliciously on their own.

“Mmm~!”

Ara smiled, cupping her cheeks with a satisfied expression. The slimes also bounced with excitement every time they ate.

Woofy was already quite satisfied since I had specially given him the giant mackerel fillet.

“Grilling it makes it much tastier!”

“Really? That’s great.”

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong  too, ah~!”

The unique-shaped clam meat was speared on Ara’s fork and entered my mouth.

I quickly ate it, savoring the chewy clam meat. It was probably the seafood I had named ‘Gluttony’s Clam.’

‘Mm, nice.’

The plump flesh had a chewy texture, and the juice overflowed with the unique refreshing flavor of seafood.

Compared to Earth’s seafood, it had a much richer taste and aroma. If someone who loves seafood ate it, they’d be thrilled.

Moreover, I had my crops as a palate cleanser.

Wrapping well-cooked carrots and bell peppers with clam meat, it was the taste of pure happiness.

The fully cooked abalone, the size of two hands, was cut into bite-sized pieces and served on a plate. I picked up a piece to taste, and I felt a strong chewiness that was different from clams. The savory flavor that came with each bite was a bonus.

“Soo, open wide~!”

Squeak.

Ara was already playing the role of an older sister. Soo, who was like a newborn baby, accepted what Ara offered with a happy smile.

Squeak.

“Are you full? Soo can’t eat much.”

What a pity. The real deal starts now.

I pulled out a crustacean that looked like a red shrimp. Then, enduring the heat, I peeled the shell.

“Ahh.”

Once the shell was peeled, the red shrimp meat was revealed. It was steaming, covered with a rich substance that appeared to be the guts.

Seeing that made my stomach naturally growl, demanding that I eat it right away!

“Ara, open wide!”

“Ahhh!”

But with tremendous patience, I endured it and handed it to Ara. There were over ten shrimp anyway, and there was still plenty to eat.

Gulp!

Ara, who swallowed my fingers along with the shrimp in one bite, closed her eyes, savoring the texture of the popping shrimp meat.

“Is it delicious?”

“……”

Surprisingly, Ara was silent.

After chewing diligently in silence, Ara, who seemed to be savoring the taste even after finishing, suddenly stood up.

“I will catch more.”

With a solemn voice.

Seeing the sincerity in her voice, I smiled awkwardly and stopped Ara.

“Let’s eat what we have first, Ara.”

“It’s so delicious.”

Ara’s serious tone was both amusing and cute.

I quickly placed more shrimp on the empty spots of the iron plate and then served a well-cooked crab to Ara.

“It should have a similar taste.”

“Grilled definitely tastes better!”

Some people prefer raw, but it seemed Ara’s preference was for cooked food.

Well, the guts of shrimp or crabs become very rich and creamy when cooked. Should I try one quickly too?

But the main dish was about to be ready.

The giant grilled mackerel.

I had considered eating it raw, but it was obvious that Ara had always eaten it raw, so I decided to grill it like a steak instead.

It’s a dish that can’t fail.

Nothing tastes bad when fried in oil. Moreover, it wasn’t just any oil, but one mixed with the essence of my crops and various seafood, so the flavor became even richer.

“Fish steak, done!”

The beautifully golden-brown grilled exterior looked incredibly appetizing. I sprinkled a herb called Embergrill on top and sliced it along the grain, making it shred like chicken.

It didn’t feel like fish but rather like meat.

With curiosity, I placed the sliced fish steak on a plate. The fish, divided into three parts, exuded a strong aroma due to its huge size.

Drip! Drop!

Ara was drooling with her mouth open.

Feeling sorry for her, I urged her to eat quickly.

“Ara, you can eat now!”

“I-I’ll eat it!”

She spoke strangely.

I divided the fish into three parts: one for Ara, one for the slimes, and one for Woofy.

What about me? I can just grill and eat more later.

Looking behind, there were still twelve pieces of giant fish fillets left.

“Mmmmm!!”

Hearing Ara’s voice, I turned my head back to see Ara shedding tears of joy with a happy expression.

“Is it really that good?”

It’s my first time seeing Ara shed tears.

Instead of answering, Ara speared a chunk of the giant fish with a fork and ran over to me.

“Mmm!”

I quickly put the fish on the fork into my mouth as she handed it over while still chewing.

A complex flavor suddenly overwhelmed me.

The dominant aroma was so rich that it was hard to believe it was from fish. Then followed the aroma of crustaceans and the flavors of vegetables. Finally, the clean scent of Embergrill.

As I bit into the fish,

Sizzle!

Juices burst out like a cherry tomato. No, it was more like a soup than just juices.

‘How can it taste like this…’

Cooking it on the iron plate was a stroke of genius.

The intense flavors tingled my entire body, and the firm fish flesh gently crumbled and ravished my mouth with each bite.

The mixture of broth and shredded fish danced in my mouth. With each bite, the mackerel’s dance made it hard to keep my composure.

“This is delicious too! Try eating it like this!” Ara speared the stir-fried vegetables with the fish on her fork and handed it to me. I brought my face to the combination of vegetables and fish that Ara offered, feeling the soft texture that had already melted away in my mouth.

“Yum!”

Oh…

Ah…

Is this the sea? No, it is the sea!

I could see the tears flowing down my face before I knew it. My eyes were flowing with the sea!

“It’s so delicious. Sob.”

“Hehehe. You’re a crybaby, aren’t you?”

Could you please wipe your own tears before saying that, Ara?

We both laughed, looking at each other’s tear-streaked faces. And then, we resumed enjoying the fish steak.

We tried eating it with clams and abalone, with shrimp and crab, with sea urchin roe, and of course, vegetables were essential. My crops were delicious on their own, but they were also excellent when paired with other ingredients.

While we were busy grilling, cooking, and eating, the abundant seafood and vegetables were gone before we knew it.

Burp.

Ara was patting her swollen belly with a satisfied smile. Woofy and other slimes also lay lazily with expressions that showed they hadn’t eaten like this in a long time.

Me? I was sitting next to Ara, patting my belly just the same. Soo had long since fallen asleep due to food coma.

‘I always have satisfying meals, but today was truly exceptional.’

Before leaving, I should ask Ara to gather some more seafood. I want to take it with me to let the others and people try it.

I saw the giant mackerel, with only the head and bones remaining. It looked like that, but it was still a usable ingredient.

‘It’s the fish that keeps on giving.’

With fish of that size, you could use the bones to make a broth, and the head could be used in dishes like braised stew.

I forced my body, which felt like it was about to burst, to stand up and began to set up the tent. The hammock was a bonus.

Using the embers from the campfire, I lit the stove and picked up Ara, who was nodding off, and Soo, who was already asleep.

I laid them in the sleeping bags inside the tent, and they fell asleep right away. Soon, they were wriggling and breathing softly together.

Today was another fulfilling day. See you tomorrow, kids.

“They don’t seem to be trying to hide it.”

“It’s a power that can’t be hidden in the first place. So, it seems they’re blatantly showing it off. It’s like they’re saying, ‘Don’t mess with us.’”

It had been two days since entering Korea.

Two suspicious figures were reviewing a report.

“Even seeing it again is astounding. Look at these insane growth metrics.”

They were examining information related to Ara Hongryeon. They were able to understand the nature and source of the buff items to some extent.

“The production volume might be more than we expected.”

“Hmm, let’s go and check it ourselves.”

These were individuals dispatched by the European Union.

They were awakened individuals operating in the shadows of the Union. Their official status was as awakened tourists visiting from the U.S.

One had transparency abilities, and the other had poison-related abilities. Their main method was to inject sleeping or paralyzing poison while in a transparent state.

“It’s hard to believe it’s a Level 1 awakener. This should make our job easier.”

“They might have bodyguards from Ara Hongryeon. Just in case, you should use your transparency ability to scout ahead.”

But they didn’t know.

Next to Lee Kyu-seong, who they thought was just a Level 1 awakener, was an entity that couldn’t be affected by transparency or poison.

The labyrinth city, Lartania.

A city where the end of the labyrinth has yet to be discovered, where the deeper you go underground, the more treasures and artifacts appear.

Many mercenaries and explorers reside there.

At the pinnacle of this city are the five great guilds:

Bloody Iron, Terranomad, Arcadia, Ancient Tracker, Kalymadra.

These five guilds, as they are called, possess far superior power compared to any mercenary or explorer guild.

The difference in strength between them and any run-of-the-mill guild was staggering.

The guild leaders of these five great guilds were, in fact, no longer considered human.

They were strong enough to be called superhumans.

Among them was Aldric, the leader of Bloody Iron, who once slaughtered over a thousand monsters alone on the 10th floor, earning the nickname “Butcher.”

He was currently descending into the labyrinth.

However, today he was not heading down to reach the lowest floor but because of a large commission sent to Bloody Iron.

“Capture one monster on the 20th floor…”

Aldric, with a massive axe slung over his shoulder, wore a peculiar expression.

For good reason—something about the request was strange.

In the Lartania labyrinth, every five floors, there is a monster-free area, which doesn’t quite fit the term ‘labyrinth.’

As you descend further, these floors, called safety zones by mercenaries, start to contain unknown terrain or buildings.

But one thing remained constant—there were no monsters.

Yet, this high-paying request was asking for a monster to be captured from one of these safety floors, the 20th floor.

It was odd, to say the least.

Nevertheless, Aldric led his subordinates down to the 20th floor because the advance payment was substantial, and more importantly, the client had explicitly stated:

“Even if you fail the mission, you won’t have to return the advance payment.”

That was why Aldric was now descending to the 20th floor.

“It might be a trap.”

Though he entertained the thought, he wasn’t particularly afraid.

He had spent plenty of time on the 50th floor, considered the lowest level of the labyrinth, and was confident he could return even if something went wrong on the 20th floor.

Thus, Aldric and his subordinates descended the labyrinth.

“We’ve reached the 20th floor.”

Soon, just as the client had said, they arrived at the 20th floor.

The scene was filled with large ruins.

“What’s that?”

“A monster?”

“…Boss, there really is a monster here.”

To their surprise, they saw a monster as the client had described.

“But…”

“Isn’t that a goblin?”

“Seriously?”

And not just any monster—it was a goblin, considered one of the weakest monsters.

“There’s really a monster here on the 20th floor?”

“Wow, if we catch that thing, we’ll get even more money than the advance payment?”

“This is like finding a golden goblin.”

“It’s even wearing clothes—like something from the East?”

Aldric’s subordinates laughed and pointed at the goblin, as they had all slain thousands of goblins during their explorations of the lowest floors.

As everyone chuckled—

“Ha-”

The goblin, which had been staring blankly at the ruins, sighed and turned around.

“Insects… you’re noisy.”

The goblin, with a clear voice that didn’t match its appearance and a lazy gaze, murmured.

Then, it moved its finger.

From left to right.

And then—

“A-?”

In an instant, the mercenaries who had been laughing at the goblin were sliced cleanly in half.

That was the end of it.

With a soft thud, the five mercenaries who had fought alongside Aldric for years were dead in an instant.

As Aldric, feeling an instinctive threat, raised his axe, he saw it.

The goblin’s eyes, far too intelligent to belong to a mere goblin, were looking straight at him, filled with only two emotions:

Arrogance (傲慢) and—

Thud.

—Contempt (視).

What Aldric saw last was that, and nothing more.

There was nothing after.

As the horrific screams of the remaining mercenaries echoed, his mind fell into darkness.

Not long after, he—no, the king of all ghouls (餓鬼)—who had dealt with all the mercenaries that descended to the 20th floor, began to move toward the surface.

***

After discussions at the academy, the friendly matches usually commence.

The format is that the designated wizard for the friendly match comes out and chooses their opponent.

In other words, any wizard gathered to watch the match could be challenged.

However, the wizard with the right to designate an opponent rarely challenges someone too far below their own rank.

Challenging a wizard too low in rank could lead to gossip that they were bullying a weaker wizard.

On the other hand, challenging someone much stronger could result in embarrassment and offend the higher-ranking wizard.

Wizards, by nature, are prideful creatures.

Thus, it was common sense for a wizard with the right to designate an opponent to choose someone of similar rank, and even Alon was aware of this.

‘…Was Baruch around 4th rank?’

Feeling the curious gazes around him, Alon recalled how Liyan had glared at Baruch yesterday.

‘He’s one rank higher than me.’

In the world of wizards, ranks create significant disparities.

The higher the rank, the more that disparity grows, so the difference in power between, say, the 7th and 8th ranks was enormous, even though they were only one rank apart.

‘…Being 4th rank at that age, even if he’s not as skilled as Penia, he’s clearly a genius.’

As Alon contemplated this, watching Baruch, who didn’t look very old despite his impressive rank—

“Surely the great wizard who helped subdue the mighty outer god isn’t afraid, right?”

Baruch suddenly spoke up.

His words, a clear provocation, startled even the wizards who had been observing the situation with interest.

Baruch’s comment obviously implied that Alon’s reputation might be nothing but rumor, and Alon quickly grasped his intent.

‘He’s trying to provoke me.’

Though he couldn’t be sure of Baruch’s exact motives, Alon didn’t care.

To him, that was enough of a reason.

‘If someone is trying to provoke you for no reason, give them a reason.’

Alon wasn’t the type to take insults lightly, especially from someone who didn’t seem all that difficult to defeat.

‘I guess I’ll get to try this out in a real fight sooner than I thought.’

Sliding a magic-enhanced glove onto his index finger, Alon spoke.

“I accept.”

Thus, the duel was set.

***

“Everything’s going as expected.”

Baruch, the son of the Violet Tower Master and a fellow 4th-rank wizard like Liyan, smiled as he felt the gazes of Alon and the surrounding wizards on him.

Provoking Alon into the arena had been part of Baruch’s plan all along.

More precisely, it was his plan to draw a bit more attention to himself.

Although being the son of the Violet Tower Master already gave him considerable influence within the academy, Baruch wanted more.

That’s why he decided to use Count Palatio, who had just arrived at the academy the day before.

Count Palatio, who always brought a whirlwind of rumors wherever he went.

Smirking, Baruch glanced at Alon.

He was well aware of the rumors surrounding Alon.

It was said that Alon played a significant role in dealing with the outer god in the north.

More recently, he had helped a golden flash subdue two ambushing Baba Yagas in the desert city of Colony.

And as of yesterday, the most unbelievable rumor of all—that he had somehow tamed the notorious troublemaker Penia—was spreading.

As a result, the academy wizards had elevated Alon’s reputation based on these rumors.

In other words, if the rumors were true, Baruch had made a foolish mistake by challenging him.

But Baruch hadn’t acted recklessly.

He raised his right hand subtly and sent a trickle of magic into the plain ring he wore.

Bzzz—

The ring, emitting a faint hum that only the most observant wizards might notice, began to display a number:

3.

Baruch grinned as he saw the number appear.

The ring he wore was an artifact that could weakly project magic to roughly gauge a person’s rank and magic power.

‘As I thought, he’s weak.’

Just like yesterday.

And just like the last time he checked before provoking him, the ring showed Alon’s rank as 3.

Baruch’s confidence came from this ring.

Though it wasn’t particularly useful in most cases, it was invaluable within the academy for exposing wizards who exaggerated their rank.

Thanks to this ring, Baruch had managed to rise within the academy by targeting those wizards who boasted false claims of power.

‘And now I’ve hooked a big fish.’

Baruch had been able to provoke Alon without hesitation because of his confidence in the ring’s accuracy.

“Are both sides ready?”

“Ready.”

“Yes.”

Responding to the question, Baruch casually summoned his magic.

‘…That rumor about him taming Penia is a bit concerning, but the ring is reliable. There’s no way he’s that strong because of his magic.’

Baruch pondered how to handle Alon.

‘Should I finish this quickly? No, if I end it too fast, it won’t have much impact. Maybe I should play with him a little. If I drag this out too long, it might backfire. If it’s revealed that this count’s skills are just rumors, my reputation, which should be rising, might unnecessarily suffer… Right, it’s better to end this a little early.’

He gripped his staff, already imagining how he would finish Alon.

“As both sides are aware, using magic that could threaten the life of your opponent is prohibited, so please adjust the power accordingly. Now—”

Thud!

“Begin.”

The match started with a light tap from the referee’s staff.

Baruch, wearing a confident smile, moved to take action when—

“Huh?”

He realized a white breath was escaping from his mouth.

Dazed by the sudden event, which happened so quickly that he couldn’t even register it properly, Baruch soon noticed the cold air filling his lungs.

Just as he began to question it—

“What?”

Crack—!

He belatedly realized that his calves were freezing solid.

Crack—crack—!

And not just his calves.

“I-”

Looking around, he realized that the entire arena was freezing over.

White frost rapidly spread across the ground, quickly expanding its territory and turning everything in the vicinity into a frozen wasteland.

And in the center of that frozen wasteland, he saw it.

A man, standing tall on the arena, expressionless, emotionless.

Wearing black, ominous armor, from which dark magic seeped out, freezing everything around him.

“Ah.”

And in that moment, Baruch realized.

Something had gone terribly wrong.

However, by the time he realized it—

“Glory of the Snowy Mountains.”

—Alon had already spoken the incantation.

Penia, the Vice-Tower master of the Blue Mage’s Tower, was a genius, but not many wizards liked her.

There were three reasons for this: first, she was incredibly rude; second, she was unbelievably rude; and third, she was insufferably rude.

Typically, wizards gathered around those who held higher ranks, regardless of their personalities, since what mattered most to them was the pursuit of knowledge, not individual character.

In other words, even if someone had an awful personality, wizards would still try to stay close to them to gain any amount of wisdom.

However, even such wizards couldn’t tolerate being near Penia.

She was a genius, but her arrogance was unbearable.

As a result, Penia’s presence always caused various disturbances within the society.

She openly disrespected anyone below the rank of tower master, making it impossible to avoid conflicts.

That’s why all the wizards referred to Penia as a “reckless troublemaker” and disliked her.

Milan, a wizard from the Green Mage’s Tower, who had just fought with her, was no exception.

He harbored deep resentment toward Penia.

To the extent that for the past seven years, he had been dreaming of subduing her with his magic and making her apologize for the constant insults she hurled at him.

Ever since he became a full-fledged wizard and could present theories at the society, she had tormented him.

So, Milan couldn’t comprehend the situation unfolding before him.

“How long has it been? …Hmm, almost more than half a year, I suppose.”

“Y-yes, that’s right.”

“No need to be so formal. I think I told you last time that you could speak informally.”

“Should I… speak informally?”

“Oh, now that I think about it, I did say to just do whatever feels comfortable. Do as you please.”

“…!”

Milan blinked in disbelief at Penia, who sighed in relief, clearly pleased that she could continue speaking formally.

‘Is this an illusion spell?’

Worried that he might have fallen victim to one of Penia’s malicious illusion spells, he even cast a dispel magic, but the situation before his eyes remained unchanged.

“Anyway, it’s nice to see you here.”

“I-It’s nice to see you too!”

The sight of Penia, who never even spoke politely unless someone was at least a tower master, now behaving like a docile puppy showing its belly, was shocking to everyone.

Even Milan’s master, standing nearby, had already cast a dispel spell more than five times, the shock was that intense.

But the surprises weren’t over yet.

“By the way, did something happen?”

“Oh, that…”

“Not that it’s my place to interfere, but shouldn’t wizards get along with each other?”

He wasn’t reprimanding anyone; it was just a casual remark.

But upon hearing it, Penia turned and looked straight at Milan.

“I’m sorry!”

She apologized.

“???”

Every wizard present had a stunned expression.

The notion that Penia, the notorious troublemaker who seemed incapable of apologies, would bow her head and apologize, felt too surreal to believe.

Even Milan, who had spent seven long years dreaming of this very moment, couldn’t react despite finally receiving the apology he’d yearned for.

“How… how is this possible?”

Liyan, who stood beside Alon, was also utterly bewildered, staring in disbelief between Penia and Milan.

A little while later…

“Well then, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Y-yes, sir…!”

Nodding eagerly at the man’s words, Penia scurried away like she was fleeing, and everyone’s gaze naturally shifted to one person: Count Palatio, the man who had not only tamed the wild troublemaker but seemed to handle her with ease.

“…She seems stiffer than last time,” Alon thought to himself as he watched Penia running off into the distance.

“Huh?”

Recalling that the nearby wizards and Liyan were staring at him, mouths agape, Alon couldn’t help but wonder.

‘Did I do something wrong?’

Feeling slightly embarrassed, he shifted his eyes, trying to gauge the situation.

***

After Penia darted away in haste…

Similarly, the wizards who were watching Alon realized that he was Count Palatio, and after expressing their mystified admiration(?) they departed.

“…Penia is called a troublemaker?”

“Yes.”

“How curious.”

Alon tilted his head as he listened to Liyan talk about Penia.

‘I knew Penia was quite arrogant in the game… but I didn’t realize she was notorious enough to be called a troublemaker by the other wizards… Well, it wasn’t a crucial plot point, so it makes sense it didn’t come up.’

Thinking about how the protagonist would recruit Penia as a companion several years from now, usually after half the kingdom had been destroyed, he shrugged.

“Actually, I’m the one who should be asking. How is it that the troublemaker behaves so quietly in front of you, Count?”

At Liyan’s follow-up question, Alon fell silent for a moment.

Amusingly enough, even Alon didn’t really know why Penia acted the way she did around him.

But simply admitting he didn’t know seemed a bit awkward, so he was contemplating how to respond when Liyan’s voice brought his attention back.

“We’ve arrived.”

Looking ahead, he saw the structure before him.

“This is…”

“It’s the inter-floor transportation device.”

Before them stood a structure that reminded him of an elevator from his previous world.

“You said you wanted to visit the library on the 38th floor, right?”

Nodding as he recalled the request he had made before coming to the mage tower, Alon responded.

“Yes, can I go in now?”

“Of course, but I have something to prepare, so I won’t be able to accompany you.”

“That’s fine. I’m just curious about the library.”

In fact, considering what he intended to do at the library, it was actually better for Alon if Liyan wasn’t there.

So when he nodded, Liyan pressed a button on the right side of the structure.

“And how exactly do you manage to handle Penia that way, Count?”

Just as Liyan asked the question again…

Woooong!

With a deep resonating sound, the door to the inter-floor transportation device, which had been firmly shut, opened.

The smile that had been on Liyan’s face instantly vanished as her expression twisted in displeasure.

Startled by her sudden change in mood, Alon naturally followed her gaze and turned his head.

Walking towards them was a man who looked like he had a complaint about everything in the world.

And then—

“Oh, who do we have here? Isn’t it our dear little Liyan?”

“…Baruch.”

Liyan’s tone was openly hostile as she addressed the man, who smiled in a way that didn’t exactly radiate friendliness.

“Did you come to see me?”

“As if.”

“Really? I wanted to see you. What a shame.”

The man, called Baruch, chuckled as he shifted his gaze from Liyan, who was glaring at him, and looked directly at Alon.

“Who’s this? A face I haven’t seen before.”

“He’s Count Palatio.”

At Liyan’s words, Baruch gave Alon a quick, dismissive once-over, the kind of look that made it clear he wasn’t impressed.

After a brief moment of contemplation, Baruch seemed to remember something as he let out a small “Ah.”

“Oh, you’re the one, right? The one who helped deal with the foreign invader after hundreds of years?”

Baruch, smirking to himself, nodded slowly.

“Pleased to meet you, Count Palatio. I’m Baruch, a wizard of the Violet Mage’s Tower. I’m sure we’ll meet again.”

With that, he gave Alon a slight nod before walking past him.

***

A little while later…

‘So, the son of the Violet Tower Master…’

As the inter-floor transportation device began to move, Alon felt his body floating and thought back to the conversation he had just had with Liyan.

‘He never appeared in the game, though.’

Alon didn’t believe in physiognomy, but as he thought about how Baruch acted exactly as his rude appearance suggested, he decided to stop paying him any mind.

From what Liyan had told him, Baruch seemed to be the type to steal research achievements and present them as his own or secretly belittle others behind their backs, but he wasn’t someone important to Alon.

After some time passed, there was a deep resonating sound.

“Wooong~!”

“Oh.”

As the giant sound reverberated, the once-closed door opened, and Alon couldn’t help but let out a small exclamation.

What he saw before him was a space filled entirely with books, from the ground he stood on all the way to the ceiling.

The seemingly endless sea of bookshelves and volumes made the entire space feel unreal, fitting for the name “Mage’s Tower,” and Alon found himself awestruck for a moment.

‘There are two things I need to find here.’

But only for a moment.

Alon quickly set himself in motion, walking between the countless bookshelves.

Though impressed, he had been here dozens of times in the game, so he moved through the area with ease, as if he were already familiar with it. However, reality wasn’t the same as a game, so it took him a little longer than expected.

But soon enough, he found the book he was looking for.

A single book with a particularly dark black cover, standing out among the others.

‘This is it.’

Satisfied, though his face remained expressionless, he pulled the book from the shelf and examined it.

There was no title or author written on the cover.

It was a book with no known creator, but without hesitation, Alon opened it and began flipping through its blank pages, just as dark and empty as the cover.

Without any concern, he continued to turn each blank page, one by one.

About a third of the way through the book, Alon finally discovered the hidden compartment.

‘Found it.’

Inside, he found a ring-like piece of jewelry that could fit on a finger—a “Ho Gaftu.”

Like his clothing, the Ho Gaftu was a deep, pitch-black color, as though it could swallow even light.

Alon instinctively slipped it into his pocket before returning the book to its original place.

‘That’s the first thing done. The second will take more time, so I’ll just prepare for it now.’

Satisfied with the texture of the Ho Gaftu in his pocket, Alon began preparing to retrieve the second item.

‘That’s it. The rest… I’ll come back in two days.’

After setting the broken, giant clock on the left side of the library—no longer in use—to point at 12, ignoring the current time, Alon fiddled with the Ho Gaftu again.

‘I’d like to use this right now.’

According to his predictions, this Ho Gaftu would significantly enhance his current magic usage, so he was eager to test it out immediately.

‘But it’s not like I only have time today.’

Remembering that it was already late in the evening, he shrugged and left the library.

The next day, having acquired what he wanted, the magic society gathering began.

And after the presentation from the Green Mage’s Tower, during the friendly competition that most of the wizards attended, Alon received a challenge.

“I’d like to test my strength against the famous Count Palatio, who dealt with the Northern outsiders after hundreds of years. What do you say?”

It was a duel request.

The one making the request, with a sly grin, was none other than Baruch, the son of the Violet Tower Master, clearly with some hidden agenda in mind.

Round 167

“I’ll be blunt. We need a large number of consumable buff items.”

At Maria’s words, Johann quietly sipped his coffee. Still, Maria continued speaking without hesitation.

“Mr. Johann, I heard you were born in Austria.”

“That’s correct.”

“If this matter is resolved smoothly, our position within the Austrian Union will rise sharply.”

Johann quickly realized why these two particular people had come to Korea among all the union members. Both were awakened beings with Austrian nationality, and he himself was originally from Austria. Although he had now naturalized and held Korean citizenship, it seemed the European Union did not see it that way.

“As you know, Austria is part of the Union due to geographical circumstances. It’s embarrassing to say, but it’s difficult for us to make significant contributions in the current Rage Dungeon strategy.”

Are they appealing to emotions? Johann listened calmly and then spoke.

“It is true that my hometown is Austria. Of course, I want my hometown to do well.”

“I knew it…!”

“But that desire isn’t greater than my loyalty to my own country.”

His country. His nationality was Korean. And more than he thought, he was genuinely invested in this country. He had lived under the shadow of his family until now. It was the first time he had created a guild, grown it, and made it number one in the country. He felt grateful for all of it.

“I’m not saying I won’t help at all. But first, we need to clearly understand the conditions the Union is proposing.”

Maria’s complexion changed. It was as if she had expected this and was self-deprecating.

“I didn’t think it would work, but I apologize for making such an unreasonable proposal initially. If it was unpleasant, I apologize.”

“No, this is all part of negotiation and trade, isn’t it?”

Johann nodded as if he understood. Then Leon, who had been quietly observing the situation next to Maria, stepped forward.

“Johann, I just want to confirm one thing first. Do you know the owner of this item?”

Leon showed what he was holding. It was none other than Kyu-seong’s Strawberry Potion. Though it was unclear how or where he obtained it, Leon bringing it here meant that another one of Kyu-seong’s items was in the hands of the European Union. The leakage of Kyu-seong’s items was already expected, so it wasn’t surprising. In fact, it was strange that it hadn’t been known yet.

“If you just tell us, we’ll take care of the rest. We won’t let you down.”

Leon spoke, assuming Johann already knew, and Johann didn’t bother to hide it.

“First, let me hear the conditions. I’ll pass them on.”

“Well, we want to meet directly…”

“That’s difficult.”

Johann firmly drew the line and suddenly stood up. Then he waved his hand and left.

“First, let me rest. I need to organize my thoughts. I’ll come back tomorrow.”

Leon and Maria did not try to stop Johann as he left. Instead, they began their discussion as soon as he was gone.

“If Johann reacts that way, it seems it will be difficult to meet directly.”

“That makes sense. It’s not easy to reveal a talent who can create such items.”

They checked the Strawberry Potion once more. Both of them, being awakened, had already tested its efficacy and even drank it.

“The production quantity might not be high, but even if we make just two or three a month, it will significantly boost our position.”

“It’s fortunate that Guild Leader Johann is in Korea. He serves as our connection.”

“Exactly, that’s why we’re here.”

In fact, other members of the union were originally scheduled to come instead of these two. Given the importance of the matter, it would have been a group composed of quite well-known figures. However, since the guild leader of the Terror Guild was Johann, both of Austrian descent, they took the initiative.

“And anyway…”

Leon stopped talking abruptly. There was always the possibility of being eavesdropped on.

In fact, more than just the two of them from the European Union had come. There were guests who had followed secretly.

And they were gathering information in their own way—a large quantity of instant buff items. These were essential to secure for the Rage Dungeon.

“Hmm!”

***

Unlike the lake near the village, there was no immediate bite when I cast my fishing rod. But after waiting a while, I finally started feeling the faint tugs.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! It’s coming! It’s coming!”

However, Ara’s fishing rod bent like a bow before mine did, with the line pulled taut.

“Wow! Slowly! Slowly!”

It seemed like a strong one. Considering that it resisted even as Ara pulled, that was all the more impressive.

-Woof! Woof!

-Squeak!

Behind us, Woofy, Soo, and the slimes were cheering enthusiastically. They were huddled together in such a cute way that I wanted to take a picture, but there was no time for that.

“Let the line loose for a moment… and then reel it back in! Wow, Ara, you’re really good at this!”

I was genuinely impressed, not just saying it. She often went fishing with father, and now she seemed to have become quite the fishing expert.

Ara was so focused on the fishing rod that she didn’t even notice my advice from the side. Her expression was so varied—pouting, pursing her lips, and sticking out her tongue slightly.

‘She seems to be fishing with her expressions…’

And that passion and concentration finally paid off as we began to see the fish struggling on the distant water surface.

Splash!

“Huh?”

What was that?

Did I just see things?

A fish that seemed almost my size, if not bigger, briefly appeared and disappeared. I kept watching, and soon enough, the fish leaped out of the water again.

-Splosh! Splosh! Splosh!

Splash!

“It’s even making sounds!”

Is that a monster?

While I watched, the distance began to close gradually. It had already been five minutes since Ara started reeling it in.

I put my fishing rod aside and waited to assist Ara as much as possible. Although Ara was managing quite well without needing my help.

Splash!

“Oh, it’s close!”

-Woof!

The children’s cheers, which had subsided for a moment, began to heat up again.

Ara maintained her focus, still changing her expressions while she started moving her body.

“Whoa, Ara! Where are you going?”

Moving back and forth as if in a tug-of-war with the fish, Ara finally settled in one spot, pulling the fishing rod with all her might.

“Heave!”

With a strange shout, the fish was dragged onto the shore, leaving a large body trailing in the sand.

“Wow.”

The huge fish looked over 2 meters long. Its silvery scales gleamed, and it resembled a mackerel. I’ve seen mackerels the size of a hand, but a 2-meter mackerel was something else.

“Father would love this.”

Freshwater fish can’t be eaten raw just in case. They are usually grilled or cooked into soup, but since this is a saltwater fish, it could be eaten raw.

Flop!

The giant mackerel, which I thought had used up all its strength, made one last struggle. Ara, who was proudly looking at the mackerel, gave it a gentle knock on the head.

Thwack!

The giant mackerel shivered and fainted. Ara seemed especially brave, handling the massive, intimidating fish without hesitation.

“Amazing, Ara!”

“Heh! Heh! Heh! It felt good!”

I looked at the mackerel with a serious face for a moment. I had cleaned and cooked fish many times, but I was at a loss because I had never dealt with such a large fish before. I guess the first step would be to drain its blood, as usual. Considering its size, draining the blood first seemed like the right thing to do.

“Once we clean it, we can eat as much as we want. It must weigh over 100 kg easily.”

“It will be delicious!”

“Ara, the fish is too big for me to handle alone. Can you help me with the cleaning?”

“Sure!”

I first got a knife from Bokkeum. We had planned to come to the sea, so I brought a sashimi knife that Jae-seong recommended. But now that I see it, I think I need a bigger, heavier knife than a sashimi knife.

For now, I used the sashimi knife to cut the gills and drain the blood.

“We won’t have any sharks lurking around, right?”

“Shark, delicious!”

While dreaming different dreams from Ara, I soaked it briefly in seawater. Given its size, draining the blood was going to take quite a bit of time.

Splash, splash!

Holding the tail of the giant mackerel, I waited as Ara submerged her face in the sea. I thought she would start fishing again immediately, but I watched her curious actions, wondering what kind of game she was playing. Suddenly, she emerged, holding something in her hand.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong!”

“What’s that?”

What Ara was holding looked like a stone. However, it had a strangely familiar shape.

“A clam? No, is it an oyster?”

“This is delicious too.”

Ara gave a gentle knock to the shell that looked like a stone. The shell shattered into pieces, revealing the white flesh hidden inside. Ara’s gentle knock was quite effective today.

“It seems to be a kind of oyster!”

“Oyster!”

Ara had never tried Earth’s oysters before. So, learning the new word “oyster,” she happily clutched it and shook her body.

Drip—

When Ara picked up the oyster’s flesh, juice dripped from it.

“Ahhh!”

Ara approached me, gesturing for me to open my mouth. But can I just eat that? …As I was doubting, [??] a notification appeared.

[A sea treasure rich in various nutrients. ]

[Gives strength when eaten. ]

[Allows underwater breathing for 3 minutes when consumed.]

“Ah, is it an item?”

Seeing the item notification, I was so surprised that I almost dropped the mackerel. In the meantime, Ara had come closer and put the oyster into my mouth.

“Hehe. It’s delicious.”

“Mmm.”

I wanted to say something, but the oyster just entered my mouth. Soon, the taste of the sea filled my mouth, and I opened my eyes wide.

The freshness of the sea.

If freshness were a taste, it would be exactly like this. Plus, the mouthful size made it even more intense.

The freshness and juiciness became more pronounced with each chew. A subtle nuttiness was present, and my throat moved continuously to swallow the rich juices.

Gulp!

Delicious. I never liked oysters that much, but I felt like my taste had changed. This was an indescribable delight.

‘The sea briefly stayed in my mouth and then left.’

Ah, such poetic expressions came to mind because of the taste.

“How is it? How is it?”

“It’s, it’s delicious. Really delicious!”

“Let’s gather more! Let’s all eat together!”

Ara then started diving again in the shallow waters. Soon, Ara came back with various seafood in her hands—not only the oysters she fed me initially but also clams, conches, and small crustaceans I had never seen before.

“That one I’ve never seen before.”

Some of the seafood had appearances not found on Earth. As Ara gathered them, half went into her mouth, and the rest went into the mouths of the other children. As time passed, the blood had completely drained from the giant mackerel.

“It’s almost dinner time.”

Ara and the children had eaten a little, but there was still a bounty of seafood scattered around. If we clean and eat this giant mackerel along with it…

Tonight will be a seafood feast!

Round 166

[A Familiar Named ‘Lee Soo’ Is Registered.]

After the pancake party ended, the system appeared.

A new member had joined.

“His name is now entirely Soo.”

But strangely, his surname was the same as mine, Lee.

Is the system trying to make a joke with me?

Anyway, as I watched Soo sleeping peacefully, I lay down beside him.

Swoosh

The refreshing sound of the bamboo forest.

Ah, this is the real paradise! Living simply and contentedly!

I don’t even know what I’m saying.

Anyway, as I lay there, Ara was curiously observing beside the sleeping Soo.

“Ara, what are you doing?”

“I’m observing my younger brother.”

“Brother?”

Ara’s words made me feel a bit restless.

A younger brother… Hmm.

Soo had already taken on the position of Ara’s younger brother.

It seems he has made a good impression.

“But can we take Soo with us? Or does he have to stay here?”

Squirm!

Finally, Mark2 answered my question.

From what I could guess from the nuance of the Slime Overlord’s abilities, it seemed that he no longer needed to stay here.

“We’re taking him with us!”

“Yeah, we should take him.”

I checked the time and looked at the minimap.

The distance to the sea was quite far.

“If it weren’t for Woofy and Purr, I wouldn’t even dare to think about it.”

Since cars couldn’t enter the narrow entrance of the Dungeon of Gluttony, a motorcycle was the best option.

But since I had never driven a motorcycle before, it would have taken a long time to get used to it.

Then I checked the minimap again and saw Mammon’s icon in the lush forest.

It seemed he was with Seon-ah.

Mammon, who used to be so shy, had grown close to Seon-ah, and she treated him affectionately like a cute cousin.

“Is it Layla’s influence?”

Our family’s monster affinity is world-class!

Next time, I should introduce them to my parents.

While checking the minimap, I fell asleep, feeling the gentle breeze.

**

Incheon International Airport.

Most of the high-ranking members of the Awakening Headquarters were gathered here, waiting for someone.

“Who would have thought they’d say they were coming so suddenly.”

“At least they informed us. We expected them to come secretly and leave quietly.”

The people the Awakening Headquarters staff were waiting for were none other than members of the European Awakening Union.

“Thankfully, none of the big names came.”

“Right. But we shouldn’t let our guard down.”

At that moment, a commotion arose at the airport.

As the headquarters staff investigated, they found that Johann, the guild leader of the Terror Guild, had arrived.

“It seems our information leaked.”

“Or they might have directly informed Johann that they were coming. Since there are Austrian members as well.”

The members of the Terror Guild approached the headquarters staff.

Johann, leading them, greeted with a friendly smile.

“Hello. You must be working hard today as well.”

“Ah! Isn’t it Guild Leader Johann! Haha!”

They greeted each other with smiling faces.

Soon, Johann looked around and asked.

“Is the director here as well?”

“The director didn’t come. Instead, the deputy director is here.”

“Oh, really? May I greet them?”

As Johann naturally spoke, he thought to himself.

‘So the director didn’t come…’

He knew that recently the high-ranking officials of the Awakening Headquarters had visited Lee Kyu-seong.

He had even heard that Director Jeon Young-joo personally went to see him.

He didn’t come to meet the European Union members but personally went to see Kyu-seong?

The implications of this action were more significant than expected.

That’s why Johann felt relieved instead.

‘I might be able to get some help in the competition with overseas guilds.’

Various efforts were being made to recruit Kyu-seong quietly, discreetly, yet perfectly.

There was only about a year left on Kyu-seong’s contract, and a year was a very short time.

Moreover, the Terror Guild was a latecomer.

Guilds like the Iron Blood Guild, who already knew about Kyu-seong, and Japan’s Junichi, and China’s Skyscraper were all likely making significant preparations.

‘Even Ara Hongryeon can’t be ignored anymore. Although they haven’t said anything, even the Gojoseon Guild would have noticed Lee Kyu-seong’s presence by now.’

While he was thinking, the deputy director approached Johann and greeted him.

The two naturally started a conversation and passed the time while waiting for the plane.

As they were talking, it soon became time for the plane to arrive.

The members of the European Union, arriving on a regular passenger flight, soon appeared at the arrival gate.

“Welcome!”

The deputy director hurriedly ran out to greet them.

“Haha. I didn’t expect you to be waiting for us in advance. Thank you for the warm welcome.”

The speaker was a Westerner with prominent dark circles, and the woman next to him also looked very tired.

“I am Leon. This is Maria.”

“Nice to meet you,” Maria said, forcing a smile.

The headquarters staff quickly escorted them to the hotel after confirming their arrival.

“You must be tired from your journey. Let’s get you settled at the hotel so you can rest.”

“Ah! Thank you so much for your consideration.”

At that moment, Johann quietly appeared from the side and interrupted.

“Leon! It’s been a long time!”

“What? Wow, is that you, Johann?! How many years has it been!”

Realizing that they knew each other, the Awakening Headquarters staff stepped back a bit.

The two stopped in place and started chatting.

“Anyway, it’s good to see things are going well.”

“How about you, now that you’ve joined the European Union? Let’s find somewhere comfortable to talk. Let the person next to you get some rest too.”

“Ah! Sure, but…”

Leon glanced at the Awakening Headquarters staff with a troubled expression.

The deputy director quickly intervened again.

“We will visit you tomorrow. Please stay with Johann.”

“Thank you for your consideration.”

The Union members then followed the Terror Guild.

Watching their retreating figures, the deputy director immediately made a phone call somewhere.

“Yes, Director. Johann took them with him. Yes, yes. I have confirmed it. Yes.”

After the call, the deputy director ordered the staff to return.

“Um, Deputy Director, are we just going to watch them like this?”

“Hmm? Yes, for now. There’s something we need to do first.”

The deputy director looked somewhere.

Someone he had never met but was highly praised by the director.

“Keep an eye on who visits Lee Kyu-seong’s residence. And see if Lee Kyu-seong himself comes out.”

***

After taking a long nap, I woke up.

Seeing all the kids sound asleep, I decided to start harvesting bamboo shoots and bamboo.

‘There are so many now.’

The whole area was a field of bamboo shoots.

Last time, they were covered with snow, so I had to clear the snow to find them. But now they were just lying around.

Thanks to that, harvesting bamboo shoots was no problem at all.

I roughly picked them and managed to harvest over a hundred.

Swoosh, swoosh

Next was bamboo.

We didn’t need much bamboo.

It’s not like we’re raising pandas.

…I wonder if Gomgom would eat bamboo?

I was slightly curious, but since I was taking it anyway, I decided to check later. Lately, Gomgom had been so commendable, riding Woofy to harvest the mushrooms of the World Tree.

After cutting the bamboo and cleaning up, the kids began to wake up one by one.

“Yawn~!”

“Did you sleep well?”

“Yeah.”

Ara rubbed her sleepy eyes and then jumped up.

“Bamboo shoots!”

“Want some?”

“Yes!”

She had been eating them until she fell asleep before the nap, and she was eating them again without needing to boil them, just peeling and munching on the bamboo shoots.

Soon after, Soo, who woke up last, was startled and exclaimed.

-Sooo!

“Haha.”

It seemed he was surprised to see us.

We were just playing together a little while ago.

Soon, he gathered himself, waddled over, and reached out his arms to me.

-Sooo.

“Oh, you’re quite heavy.”

I picked up Soo and felt how heavy he was.

He was similar in size to a slime but much heavier.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! I want to be held too!”

“Alright, our Ara too!”

Holding one in each arm, I found myself in a dilemma as Mark2 and Bokkeum looked on with longing eyes.

“Ahem. Now, shall we pack up and get going?”

“Yes!”

We packed up, making sure to take the harvested bamboo and bamboo shoots.

Then we climbed onto the back of Woofy, who had been eagerly chewing on a dog chew, and set off.

“Today, we’re just going to scout the sea and come back!”

“Yes! Let’s go!”

Soo was nestled in Ara’s arms, looking around in bewilderment as if not quite understanding what was happening.

“Soo, we’re going together.”

“We’re going together.”

At Ara’s words, Soo finally nodded, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.

He was said to be curious, and it seemed to be true.

Woofy set off.

After about 10 minutes, we finally emerged from the bamboo forest.

It was the first time Soo had left the bamboo forest, and he let out a cheer.

-Sooo~!

A vast meadow stretched out before us.

Woofy joyfully ran across the green fields.

With nothing in the way, our speed increased significantly.

“Let’s go!”

“Yeah!”

-Sooo!

After a full six hours, including one break, we finally reached the coastline.

“We’ve arrived at last! Good job, everyone. Well done, Woofy.”

-Woof!

I handed back the dog chew I had been holding for Woofy and took out his water bowl.

Swish.

The sound of the sea waves gently filled the air.

As I turned to look at the horizon, the dreamlike sky meeting the sea made it feel like we were in another world.

“Wow.”

How could such a place exist?

The scenery was truly breathtaking.

When I have more time, I’ll have to build a house near here with a sea view.

It could be used as a vacation home.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! Look at this!”

Ara, walking along the shore, lifted something into the air.

“Wow. It’s pretty. Shall we collect them? Mammon or Frey might be able to make beautiful jewelry out of them.”

“That sounds great!”

It was a shell with a slightly unusual shape.

Beside Ara, Soo was also walking along, and after stepping into the seawater, he shivered and retreated.

-Sooo.

He must have tasted the saltiness.

It seemed that Soo should probably avoid getting too close to the sea.

“Hmm, let’s set up a parasol here.”

It was just a regular umbrella, but for the kids, it became the perfect-sized parasol.

Even though the sun wasn’t too bright, I just wanted to capture the mood.

Isn’t it romantic at the beach?

I set up five parasols and prepared the fishing gear.

‘I feel a bit nervous.’

We catch fish the size of Ara in the lake, so I wonder what kind of impressive fish we might catch here.

And generally, fish from the sea taste better.

Just thinking about catching and eating fish made me hungry.

Besides, the sea brings to mind an array of seafood in my head.

“Ara, let’s go fishing!”

“Yeah! Fishing!”

With the fishing preparations complete, I called out to Ara, who was already far away, picking up something.

Now, let’s see what we can catch!

Noel’s position within the Empire’s military is, without a doubt, absolute. However, that doesn’t mean everyone likes her. While their numbers are small, there are those who have become her enemies for various reasons. Envy, jealousy, or perhaps people who belonged to opposing factions within the military and were pushed out in the competition. Most likely, everyone in this room can relate to such experiences.

“I understand what you’re trying to say,” Sir Levant, a knight known as the ‘Great Wolf,’ spoke reluctantly.

Just from the sound of it, the nickname doesn’t seem so bad. But anyone who dares say it in front of Sir Levant better be prepared to have their nose broken. The name is clearly meant as an insult, implying he’s merely the leader of the men beneath the ‘Lionheart.’

That alone explains quite concisely why Levant dislikes Lionheart. Yet, what they think about the current task at hand is another matter.

“Are you telling us outright to harm one of Lionheart’s people?”

“Strictly speaking, it’s not someone close to her,” replied a man with a voice so refined and elegant, you could describe it as silky. It suited his noble appearance, even though what he was saying was anything but.

“I’m talking about taking down her husband’s guards. Even if you’re tracked, it won’t cause a huge problem.”

To be honest, he’s not someone one would like. His pristine, radiant appearance seems like a mask to conceal a snake-like nature.

But it’s frustrating because he’s someone who wouldn’t show his true colors easily.

Rad Ilza Varfon. The Imperial Administrator. A high noble ranked fourth or fifth within the imperial court. His status alone is imposing enough, but there’s something else about him that’s even more concerning.

He’s the closest confidant to the Second Prince…

Thinking of that, Sir Levant rubbed his chin. It was clear that even making such a brazen request directly must reflect that faction’s intentions.

“I see no reason to stop now. You should be aware of whose orders I’m here under.”

“If you handle this matter well, consider who might protect you in the future. Think about who the legitimate heir to the throne is.”

“It’s an enticing offer,” Sir Levant said, frowning as he looked at the other man.

Frankly, he couldn’t grasp the full intent behind this. If they had come and asked for something that directly harmed Lionheart, maybe he’d understand. But this…

It seems more like… an attack aimed at Lionheart’s husband, not Lionheart herself.

“I can’t see how anyone benefits from hitting that target,” Levant muttered.

“Yesterday, there was a fight between Lionheart and her lieutenant at the training ground. Have you heard about it?”

“What?”

Levant tilted his head, puzzled by the sudden topic shift, while Rad continued, now with a slight smile in his voice.

“It was quite an intense fight, with both sides inflicting significant injuries. But her lieutenant’s wounds, I heard, were ‘healed’ perfectly. No sign of pain at all.”

“What exactly are you implying…?”

“It’s not widely known, but there’s a royal family member in the Holy Kingdom with that exact same ability.”

As soon as Rad said that, Sir Levant’s expression turned serious.

“If she has a royal as her lieutenant… Well, that’s outright blasphemy to the Holy Kingdom. Should an ‘unfortunate accident’ happen to that person, it would cause even greater consequences.”

In other words, whether you succeed or fail, just getting that princess involved in trouble would be enough to cause a massive incident. Lionheart’s husband would find himself cornered.

“…But wouldn’t we face even bigger trouble if we end up killing royalty? That’s absurd—”

“Don’t worry. She’ll be fine.”

“Excuse me?”

“The Holy Kingdom’s interest in her lies in her status as a ‘royal.’ They wouldn’t be overly concerned with personal revenge. We can handle it discreetly.”

“Is the assassination of royalty something that can be swept under the rug so easily?”

“If it’s that particular princess, yes,” Rad replied with a slight chuckle. “Not that she’d die from an assassination attempt anyway. And more than that, she’s a very peculiar person with no allies at all.”

In other words, “She’s a loner,” Rad stated smoothly. “No one would mourn her, no matter what happens.”

Though the words were smooth, they carried a sharp edge, almost dripping with malice.

[You have one day left to complete the side quest. Failure will result in penalties!]

‘I know. There’s no need to remind me.’

Ever since the incident at the training ground, Katia has been silent, disappearing without a word for a full day. Noel, too, has locked herself in her personal quarters, and the entire building has been filled with an unsettling tension.

It’s clear… The side quest asked for a ‘peaceful resolution,’ which likely means mediating between those two and smoothing things over.

‘But first, I need to figure out where they even are. How can I even start a conversation when I don’t know where they’ve gone?’

Surprisingly, the clue to solving the issue came from an unexpected place.

“His Highness is on the rooftop.”

As soon as we crossed paths, Stella wearily informed Aiden. “I managed to contain yesterday’s commotion from escalating further, but calming the individuals involved is beyond me.”

“Thank you for your efforts.”

“Be careful, though. She’s on edge, and if anyone approaches her carelessly, she might explode. But if anyone could talk her down, perhaps you could.”

“I’ll give it a try.”

Stella narrowed her eyes as she looked at me. “Do you really think you can?”

“Yes.”

Her gaze was filled with doubt, as if wondering how he could so casually say he’d handle such a volatile situation. But Aiden met her eyes calmly.

“…Aiden.”

After a long moment of staring into his eyes, Stella sighed heavily and spoke.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Lady Noel this emotional. Not since the Union War, I believe.”

“…..”

“You really are someone, you know that? Having people of their caliber acting so out of character because of you.”

“Thanks…? I guess?”

His awkward response was due to her words not sounding much like a compliment. The next part made her message even clearer.

“Please, do me a favor and try not to become a heartbreaker.”

“…..”

“If Lady Noel ends up heartbroken later… Well.”

“…..”

“You’ll have to handle that yourself.”

With that ominous warning, Stella walked away, leaving him scratching the back of his head.

‘…I’m sorry, but I can’t make any promises.’

Given that he had taken on the role of saving the world, he had to do whatever it takes. The reason he had been trying so hard to manage things with Katia is tied to that goal as well.

[Skill Info]

<Weaver of Fate>

-You alone know the truth of this world. By building bonds with key figures in the main story, you will unlock new rewards!

Human relationships tend to progress or regress during moments of emotional extremes. If he wants to build a ‘bond’ with Katia, now might be the perfect time.

It pricks at his conscience, but his actions are also guiding the path he must walk in the future. He is not intentionally trying to toy with anyone’s emotions, but with the Weaver of Fate ability in hand, he has no choice but to do whatever it takes to win favor.

He is still not sure how the system defines ‘favor,’ but he can’t say for certain that it won’t develop into something romantic.

However, one thing he is sure of is…

‘At least this person seems safe,’ He mused, watching Katia sitting on the rooftop railing with her legs stretched out.

Of all the people he had met, he had this strange certainty that Katia isn’t someone with whom romantic feelings will develop anytime soon.

What can he say? She’s the kind of person who doesn’t seem to grasp the concept of emotions like that in the first place.

“Your Highness.”

At his call, Katia glanced over her shoulder at him. Her face scrunched up in annoyance, but she quickly turned away again.

‘What should I say… She looks like a sulking child.’

He smiled wryly.

At least she’s not running away from him. That means this is a good opportunity to talk. She didn’t say a word as he approached and sat beside her on the railing, which further confirmed that he’d picked the right moment.

“Why are you in such a bad mood?”

“Go away.”

“Are you still upset about what Lady Noel said?”

Katia clamped her mouth shut with a snap. Her silence was an answer in itself.

Suppressing a smirk, he sat quietly next to her.

He hadn’t known this princess for very long, but from observing her behavior, one thought always crossed his mind:

‘She’s just like a kid.’

From beginning to end, she tries to control everything to her liking, and when things don’t go her way, she reacts with anger. Despite being sharp like a needle when it comes to understanding others’ emotions, she can’t seem to manage her own feelings at all.

The reason for such a personality wasn’t hard to figure out.

‘It’s strange when you think about it.’ From the moment she entered the Empire, she did so entirely on her own, without a single attendant, and despite staying here freely, the Holy Kingdom never once made a normal request to return her or show more concern for her. It’s as if they don’t care whether she’s here or not.

That’s how Katia is treated within the Holy Kingdom.

Even considering the backstory, Katia didn’t seem to have any true friends or acquaintances before joining the main scenario. She was regarded as a freak, a monster, something detestable, a source of fear—in other words, a loner. Despite her intelligence, it’s clear that she has never formed proper human relationships. She’s never had the chance to mature emotionally.

And now, for the first time, the person she wants to impress is Aiden himself.

It makes sense that her affection, as displayed on the status screen, manifests as obsession. She likely has no one else in the world she wishes to get close to.

“…Why did you come?”

Her gloomy voice revealed a fear that the person she cared about might dislike her.

Aiden stroked his chin and replied, “I came to check on you. You didn’t seem to be doing well.”

“I’m fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“…..”

“Then I’ll leave?”

Smiling as he said this, Katia shot him a sulky glare.

“…Am I…”

After a long silence, she finally forced out the words.

“Am I just a burden to you?”

“No.”

That was going too far. After all, everything Aiden had asked of her, she’d done without complaint.

“Then, was she lying?”

“No. You *are* a burden, though.”

At Aiden’s blunt confirmation, Katia’s expression froze in disbelief. As she stared at him, Aiden smiled mischievously and continued.

“So let me ask you this: isn’t it common sense that you’re a burden?”

Without hesitation, Aiden listed all the inconveniences he had endured since she declared herself his lieutenant:

“Wanting me to kill you all the time because you wanted to ‘feel’ something.”

“Following me around everywhere so I can’t even have privacy.”

“I haven’t slept well, eaten well, or even gone to the bathroom in peace because of you.”

As Katia’s expression grew more bewildered, Aiden nonchalantly yawned and continued piling on complaints.

He even pointed out that if it wasn’t unintentional, it was worse because she was fully aware of the inconvenience she caused and did nothing about it. He also mentioned the staff in the building had lodged multiple complaints because of her behavior.

“…Then…”

For a long time, Katia stood there, visibly deflated. Her usual stubbornness drained from her, and her expression crumpled. She eventually muttered in a small, shaky voice—something she would never have said under normal circumstances. There was even a bit of moisture around her eyes, as though Aiden’s words had genuinely hurt her.

“So… you don’t need me?”

“That’s not what I’m saying. Just don’t act like that from now on.”

Katia’s eyes widened in surprise, as if she hadn’t expected to hear that. Aiden sighed internally.

It was clear from her reaction that she had never even imagined being ‘forgiven.’

It says a lot about what kind of life she must have lived in the Holy Kingdom.

Thinking back, the main scenario’s second chapter, *Blasphemy*, is an event triggered by Katia’s status as a loner.

So now, Aiden laid the groundwork to completely twist that event in a different direction.

“Friends can be a little burdensome sometimes. As long as you don’t keep doing it, it’s fine.”

Of course, casually calling himself her ‘friend’ might be considered disrespectful when addressing royalty. But even so, Aiden ended his sentence with a firm tone.

Though his ultimate goal was to raise her affection level and replicate her skills, in many ways, he realized that this kind of relationship was something she truly needed.

Soon, Katia’s face grew even more bewildered after hearing those words.

“…Friend?”

She pronounced the word “friend” as if it were some foreign concept, like she was hearing something absurd, akin to being told to eat a shoe heel. It was clear that this was a term she had never encountered in her life.

“Friend?”

“Me and you? Friends?”

“Yes, friends.”

Aiden repeated the word, driving it home, as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small hip flask—an item he occasionally used. It wasn’t much of a gift, but saying something like this without a token would be awkward, so he handed it over casually.

“This is a token.”

Katia, still looking perplexed, accepted the flask hesitantly.

“Katia.”

“Hm?”

“Since we’re friends, I want you to promise me something.”

“Don’t go around picking fights with other people. And try not to hurt anyone, if possible. Also, apologize to Lady Noel for starting that fight.”

“Can you promise me that?”

“Okay.”

Katia curled up, clutching the hip flask tightly, almost like a mother bird brooding over her egg.

“I’ll keep my promise.”

Well, at least she seemed to be listening, Aiden thought, relieved.

“I’ll trust you.”

As Aiden stretched and said those words, Katia nodded, seeming unusually subdued.

[System Message]

▶ Katia’s ‘Obsession’ level with you has increased to Level 2.

The skill ‘Weaver of Fate’ has activated, allowing you to copy additional skills!

Your influence over Katia has significantly increased.

▶ A major change in Katia’s feelings has occurred due to your actions. The possibility of altering the future has increased.

A new personal quest related to Katia will soon unlock.

The unique trait ‘Origin’ information has been unlocked.

Seriously, just one promise of friendship, and suddenly so many things are happening all at once. But the most striking thing was something else:

‘Unique trait?’

Aiden tilted his head as he opened the skill window. He remembered it was a powerful ability, distinct from other skills.

[Skill Info]

Omnipotence [Level 1]

Combine two or more abilities to create a significantly stronger effect.

Discovered combinations:

– Guardian’s Flame (Pure White Heart ↔ First Oath)

■ Origin [Locked]

Increase influence over others to unlock this ability.

Personal Quest [1/2]

Judging by the system message, it seemed that when he made a significant emotional impact on others, the future could be altered, unlocking additional skills. The ‘Omnipotence’ ability appeared to add extra bonuses when mixing multiple powers. Based on this, Aiden guessed that it worked as a form of synergy when he influenced others deeply.

Still, the specifics would only become clear later.

‘Anyway…’

One issue seemed to be resolved, at least.

[System Message]

You have one day left to complete the side quest.

[Progress: 50%]

Aiden frowned slightly at the window. Why was it only halfway complete?

‘…Does this mean I need to comfort Lady Noel too?’

Katia had always seemed somewhat immature, so it made sense to soothe her. But it was surprising that Noel might also require the same treatment. What could have happened to her?

“…What a life,” he sighed, heading off once again.

Unlike Katia, he already knew where Noel was. He arrived in front of her personal room and knocked.

“Lady Noel, it’s Aiden. May I come in?”

After waiting for a while, there was no response. Aiden tilted his head and gently opened the door.

The sharp, unmistakable scent of alcohol hit his nose the moment the door cracked open. The air was thick with it, enough to overwhelm his senses, causing him to grimace. He didn’t mind a couple of beers after work, but drinking to the point where the room reeked of it was something he found distasteful.

Given the person occupying this room, the situation felt completely out of place.

“Lady Noel…?”

As he cautiously stepped into the room, his eyes widened at the scene before him.

Empty cans. Bottles drained of every last drop. If he gathered them all, he could probably build a small pyramid. Yet, despite the mess, each empty container was lined up neatly, displaying Noel’s characteristic fastidiousness even in chaos.

Aiden stood there for a moment, speechless. He picked up one of the bottles nearby, noting that the label proudly advertised its 50% alcohol content. Glancing around, he spotted at least five more identical bottles lying around.

While he stood there, dumbfounded, someone stirred on the bed.

“Oh.”

With a disgruntled look on her face, Noel slowly sat up.

“Huh—”

She slurred her words, clearly drunk.

“Oh, Aiden~” she greeted him with a sloppy grin.

Aiden could only stare in disbelief at the sight before him.

‘What in the world…’

At Hiro’s farm, the team was busy tidying up the garden after the tomato harvest.

“Let’s move that over there.”

“Kyuu!”

“Gather everything here… We’ll need the stakes again.”

“Kyuu!”

First, they removed the stakes that had been supporting the tomato plants to prevent them from falling, then piled up the pulled tomato vines in one spot.

Next, Hiro grabbed a hoe to till the soil.

Thunk, thunk, thunk!

‘Is it because I increased agility? The speed at which I wielded the hoe was noticeably faster than before.’

“Not bad, right?”

“Kyuu!? M-Master! You’re so fast!”

Pepper, who was digging alongside Hiro, was startled by his increased speed.

Thunk, thunk!

“About 230 tomato seeds, right?”

With a total of 230 seeds harvested from water tomatoes, Hiro needed to expand the garden to plant them all.

“Pepper, water here!”

“Kyuu!”

“Water Sprinkling!”

[You have used the “Water Sprinkling” skill.]

Hiro sprinkled water to soften the hard ground a bit before swinging the hoe with all his might. Thanks to investing in strength, he could apply more force than before.

Thunk!

The hoe dug deep. With a strong pull, he turned the soil over in a large chunk.

Several hours passed like this.

“This should be enough, right?”

Hiro straightened up, wiping the sweat off his brow. It had taken longer than expected, but there was no helping it. Expanding the garden for 230 tomato seeds wasn’t easy.

“Whew! All done!”

“Good job. Now let’s plant the seeds.”

“Kyuu! Leave it to me!”

As Hiro took out the seeds, Pepper ran over to make holes in the furrows. Hiro planted the seeds in them.

Planting the seeds didn’t take too long. His back hurt a bit, but the patch he had applied helped a little.

“Whew… That should be all of them, right?”

“Kyuu! I checked everything!”

“Really? Then we’re done here.”

Hiro stretched his back again. Bending over to plant seeds made him feel like his back was curving. He had to be careful—even with a patch, it wasn’t a cure-all.

“I need to be cautious from now on.”

“Alright! Time to finish up! Pepper, water sprinkling!”

The watering range was narrower than expected, likely due to the low skill level. But with only a one-second cooldown, Hiro used the skill repeatedly to ensure the garden was evenly watered.

“All done watering!”

“Great. Nice job.”

“Kyuu!”

“Since we’ve replanted the tomatoes… how about grabbing a meal?”

“Kyuu!”

At the mention of food, Pepper’s eyes sparkled. The true joy of farming? It was the snack breaks. The taste of snacks after hard work was better than any gourmet feast.

‘Back when I moved to the countryside, that was one thing I really enjoyed.’

When he had moved to the countryside, Hiro, being a young man, often got called out to help with work, sometimes to the point of exhaustion. But what got him through it was the snack breaks.

‘Those snacks were delicious. They say hunger is the best seasoning, right?’

Even simple meals tasted better after farming—better than ramen eaten by the Han River or at a mountain lodge during a hike.

“I put up with it for a whole year because of that. If not for those snacks, I would’ve left long ago.”

“Kyuu? Run away!? Is there a monster…?”

“Not like that. Just wait. I’ll give you something delicious.”

“Kyuu!”

Hiro had something prepared for today.

‘Is it dried well?’

Near the shrine, there was a flat rock. On top of it, sweet potato leaves were spread out, with slices of sweet potato drying on top.

“Let’s see… Looks good, right? Check!”

[Delicious Earth-Dried Sweet Potato]

– Grade: E

– Description: Tasty snack made by cutting earth-baked sweet potatoes and drying them naturally. Strongly sweet with a deep, unique flavor. Infused with spirit energy.

  – Mana Recovery +1,300

  – Spirit Recovery +1,300

  – Satiety +20%

‘This is different from baked sweet potatoes.’

The dried sweet potatoes restored both health and mana.

‘This is basically a potion.’

It was practically at potion level for recovery—not bad at all. Normally, only one food effect can apply at a time.

‘Baked sweet potatoes restore health, but they can only do so once.’

But these dried sweet potatoes provided instant recovery upon eating, regardless of that restriction.

‘Not bad. Maybe I can even sell these later if I get the chance.’

“Pepper.”

“Kyuu?”

“Try this.”

“What is it?”

“They’re called dried sweet potatoes.”

“Kyuu?”

“Just give it a try.”

“Kyuu!”

Hiro handed it over, and Pepper, without any hesitation, bit into the dried sweet potato.

“Kyuuuu!?”

Pepper’s eyes widened in surprise.

“It’s delicious!”

“Right?”

Hiro took a bite of the dried sweet potato as well.

“Hmm… this is good.”

Dried sweet potato is a snack made simply by drying sweet potatoes. Though it’s simply dried, the taste is different from roasted sweet potatoes. While roasted sweet potatoes are sweet and soft, dried sweet potatoes are even sweeter with a stronger flavor.

Chewy.

“And the texture is nice too.”

The outside was crispy, and the inside was soft, making it extra enjoyable to chew.

“Delicious.”

“Kyuu! It’s so tasty! Kyuu!”

Crunch, crunch!

Pepper wagged his tail happily, engrossed in eating the dried sweet potatoes.

Ding!

Just as Hiro was enjoying the snack, a message notification popped up.

As the cooking skill level increased, so did the effectiveness of his dishes, which was beneficial for him.

Crunch, crunch.

The sound of chewing dried sweet potatoes echoed softly around Hiro’s farm for a while.

***

A few days passed.

“Kyuu…”

Pepper sat alone in the shrine, waiting endlessly for Hiro.

“Master Kyuu…”

The cold silence filled the shrine, something Pepper hadn’t felt when Hiro was with him.

The feeling of being alone.

He had experienced something like this before. During a monster attack, Pepper had desperately fled to survive. He had dug a small hole to hide in and spent days there, holding his breath in fear. The loneliness and isolation he felt then were unimaginable.

But now, it was different.

“Kyuu.”

He wasn’t alone anymore.

Back then, no matter how much he cried out, no one heard Pepper’s voice or came to his aid. Shivering with fear in that dark burrow, he felt as if he would be alone forever.

But now, it was different.

‘He’ll come back soon.’

Hiro would definitely return.

With the strong belief that he would come back to him, Pepper could wait.

***

“Hmm…”

As usual, Hiro was eating while browsing the Overlord Community, observing the atmosphere.

“Will the crops sell well? I wonder how much the sweet potatoes will go for.”

Currently, in *Overlord*, the position of ‘crops’ wasn’t exactly favorable. Especially user-grown crops—they didn’t sell well. The quality was lower, and the quantity wasn’t substantial. Above all, there was no real reason for anyone to buy crops from users.

“Might as well buy them from NPCs.”

NPC-sold crops were of decent quality and available in large quantities. And most importantly…

“They’re cheap.”

NPC crops were inexpensive. Players were trying to sell one sweet potato for 100 gold, including labor costs. But an NPC sold three sweet potatoes for just 100 gold. The low price alone gave NPCs a huge competitive advantage.

“If they’re not selling, they should lower the price to at least move some stock… being stubborn over this…”

Hiro understood that people wanted to get some return on their investment, but it was a short-sighted approach. Sometimes, you had to accept a loss to avoid an even greater one. Being stubborn could lead to disaster in an instant.

“Not that it’s my problem.”

Hiro continued eating and moved on to check something else.

“How’s the potion market?”

He looked up the price of recovery potions.

[Low-Grade Health Recovery Potion]

– Grade: E

– Description: A health recovery potion made by a skilled alchemist. Consuming it restores health. Be cautious, as overuse may lead to potion addiction.

– Requirement: Level 1 and above.

– Effect: Health Recovery +3,000

“So, one of these goes for 200 gold?”

A potion that restored 3,000 health for 200 gold. Considering 100 gold was equivalent to about 1,000 won in cash, each potion cost around 2,000 won.

“Potions certainly have higher health recovery than my crops.”

But…

“Then again, my dried sweet potatoes restore both mana and spirit power too.”

Even though their health recovery was lower, the added mana recovery was a significant advantage. Above all, in *Overlord*, players couldn’t overuse potions. To enhance realism, perhaps, if you keep consuming potions, you can end up with a status ailment.

[You have overused potions.]

[Status Effect: Potion Addiction]

[All potion effects -50% until the potion addiction wears off.]

Potion addiction would kick in after consuming too many potions. To recover from this, players had to find a special hot spring… or abstain from potions for a week.

“But hunting without potions? That’s tough, especially without healers around…”

“However, my crops don’t cause that kind of addiction. They’re snacks, not potions.”

This was a clear point of distinction. A recovery item without potion addiction? It was bound to be a hit.

“Now, I just need to figure out how to get access to the auction house.”

Hiro finished his meal, cleaned up neatly, then went to his room and lay down in the capsule.

Whirrr!

[Please select the game you want to launch.]

“Overlord.”

[Launching Overlord.]

Hiro logged into *Overlord* once again.

Today was…

“Are the sweet potatoes ready?”

It was harvest day for his sweet potatoes.
