Crash-!

Both of Sergius’ hands were shattered as if crushed by an invisible force, and a horrendous scream burst from his mouth.

“Aaaagh!”

It wasn’t just his hands. His arms, shoulders, and legs were mangled as if crushed by a press.

A chilling scream echoed throughout Yutia’s mansion. But Yutia, watching this gruesome scene, simply spoke with a calm expression, as if passing judgment on Sergius, whose body was now completely broken.

“Screaming like that won’t bring anyone to save you.”

“S-Save me… please!”

Sergius, his face full of terror, cried out to Yutia, who was watching him in the red world. Already suffering from unbearable pain, bodily fluids leaked from his eyes, nose, and mouth. His dignity as a cardinal was long forgotten; all he could do was scream, desperate to escape the agony.

“What are you talking about?” Yutia, seemingly puzzled, locked eyes with Sergius, who was writhing on the ground, and opened her mouth again.

“Obviously, you’re not going to die, right?”

As she spoke, a white light began to emanate from Yutia’s hand. The powerful divine energy quickly started to heal Sergius’ body, but—

“No! No, stop!!”

Sergius screamed even louder as he watched his body begin to heal. Then, the moment his body was fully restored—

“Gah…!”

Sergius, filled with terror, looked up at Yutia, his whole body trembling. He was a pitiful sight, far removed from the dignity of a cardinal of Rosario.

The fear from the repeated excruciating pain had already eaten away at what little remained of his dignity and faith. Even though he had suffered this torment countless times, he still couldn’t comprehend the situation. The holy knights who never came, no matter how much he screamed. The pressure that kept him from moving his body as he wished. The way his body twisted like paper with a mere gesture from her.

None of it made any sense. It was as if everything was incomprehensible.

And so—

“Save me… please… save me…”

He simply begged for mercy. Even though he didn’t fully understand why he was being subjected to such horrors, he pleaded for forgiveness, as if asking for absolution from a god.

However—

Crrrrunch~!!

“Aaaaaaaah!”

Contrary to Sergius’ desperate hope, his body began to slowly compress once more. His ears ringing with his own mad screams, he heard Yutia’s voice.

“I keep telling you, you’re not going to die. You still have something to do.”

Her voice was sweet to anyone’s ears.

“But—”

Soft, yet—

“You’ll have to atone for the crime of trying to harm Him.”

Her voice sent chills down his spine.

“Aaaaagh!!!!”

Sergius’ screams echoed once again.

***

It had been about a month since Alon returned to the Count’s estate. He had spent the time recovering from the weariness of his long desert journey, while also investigating the source of the “Abyssal Entity” that wasn’t supposed to have appeared yet, along with signs of foreign threats he had heard from “It.” Now, Alon was preparing to leave the estate once again.

There were two reasons for his departure. One was to attend the magic conference, to which he had been invited by Liyan Aguileras, the daughter of the Red Tower’s lord. The other was to make an appearance at a social gathering before the conference.

Social gathering.

In truth, it was more accurate to call it a noble’s social event rather than a grandiose term like “gathering.” The nobles were just getting together to strengthen their friendships.

The only slightly unique aspect was that unlike typical noble gatherings, this one allowed participation from renowned non-nobles.

‘I really don’t want to go.’

Alon smacked his lips as he thought about it. But even so, the reason he felt compelled to attend the gathering before the magic conference was that, as the head of Kalpha, he needed to maintain some degree of decorum.

Whether he liked it or not, he was already the leader of Kalpha.

Of course, that didn’t mean he was forcing himself to do things he truly didn’t want to do.

Up until the middle of the process, he was full of thoughts about having to do things against his will, but that changed completely because of a single letter that came to Alon.

“Hoo—”

Alon looked at the magical letter that brightened his mood just by looking at it. It wasn’t enchanted or anything; it was simply a letter stating that Alon had become the legitimate leader of a faction, along with details about the regular payments he would now receive.

“Impressive.”

The amount of money mentioned in the letter, which a faction leader could legally receive, was far beyond his imagination. It was enough for him to finally understand why the leaders of the two factions he couldn’t comprehend before had held onto their positions so stubbornly for years without stepping down.

‘At this rate, I could go through all kinds of hell every day and still hang on.’

Alon wondered how the faction’s structure worked to generate so much money. But setting aside that curiosity, he felt satisfied once again, imagining the money that would come in the future. Just as he tucked the letter into his coat, feeling content with this financial relief—

“Count, isn’t that the letter you received two weeks ago?”

“It is.”

“And you’re still carrying it around?”

“It puts me at ease.”

At this unexpected answer, Evan looked at him with a strange expression.

“Sometimes, it’s hard to tell if you’re being serious or not, Count.”

“Well, I’m neither particularly serious nor not serious.”

At that, Evan shrugged and changed the topic.

“Now that I think about it, I heard some interesting stories while we were staying in the village yesterday.”

“Interesting stories?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

“Well, it’s still just a rumor, and I haven’t confirmed it with the information guild, so it’s not certain yet, but it seems Deus has defeated Reinhardt.”

“Reinhardt? You mean the ‘One Sword’ of Caliban?”

“Yes.”

“…Deus defeated the One Sword?”

At Alon’s question, Evan nodded.

“As I said, I haven’t confirmed it with the information guild, so it’s not 100% certain… but considering how widespread the rumor is, I think it’s likely true.”

“Hmmm…”

Alon thought of Deus, with whom he had lost contact naturally after their northern expedition together half a year ago.

‘Isn’t Reinhardt too difficult to beat?’

Of course, Alon knew that Deus was strong. He was one of the Master Knights, just like Reinhardt, and Alon had witnessed Deus’ strength firsthand.

However, Alon, who had learned just how powerful Reinhardt was through the game ‘Psychedelia’, couldn’t help but feel a bit confused. As far as he knew, Reinhardt possessed a strength on a completely different level from other Master Knights.

But then again, he didn’t think the rumors were necessarily wrong.

‘If he’s become strong enough to defeat Reinhardt in just half a year… just how talented is he?’

As Alon marveled at Deus’ talent, Evan continued with more news.

“There’s something else too.”

“Is it about Seolrang? Or Yutia?”

“Well… it seems like Yutia might be involved, but it’s actually a different story.”

“?”

Curious, Alon listened closely, and after hearing everything, he asked again in disbelief.

“The Duke of Limgrave was taken to the Holy Nation?”

“Yes, and this isn’t a rumor—it seems he really was taken.”

“Why…?”

“I heard he received a ‘conversion letter.’”

“A conversion letter…?”

“You know, the letter the Holy Nation sends when there’s suspicion of collaboration with heretics. That’s what he received.”

“So he was taken to the Holy Nation?”

“Yes, although it was said that he went willingly, it’s essentially the same as being dragged there. From what I heard, it happened about two weeks ago, so you probably won’t see the Duke of Limgrave at the gathering.”

Alon nodded, seeming to think that wasn’t entirely a bad thing.

In truth, he had been somewhat reluctant to meet with either Duke Limgrave or Marquis Filboid just yet. Every time he saw them, they looked at him as if they were ready to devour him.

“…”

Of course, no matter how much animosity they directed at him, it didn’t actually cause Alon any harm. But even so, it was still uncomfortable to be in the same space as someone who was openly hostile toward him.

“It might be more comfortable this way.”

Murmuring to himself, he soon spotted the distant lands of the Verityun estate, where the gathering was being held. A short while later, they arrived at the estate of Marquis Verityun, where the gathering was taking place, and headed straight for the ballroom.

“We’ve arrived, Count.”

At Evan’s words, Alon naturally stepped out of the carriage.

‘There are a lot of people.’

As soon as he got out, he couldn’t help but notice the large crowd gathered before him.

There had been many people at the Grand Church event as well, but this gathering had even more.

‘There certainly are a lot of non-nobles here. Over there are mercenaries, here are merchants, and over there… mages and even priests.’

Alon observed as he walked, noting the presence of many attendees who didn’t look like nobles. Soon enough, they reached their destination.

As if they had been waiting, Alon encountered Duke Artia in a black dress and Count Zenonia.

“You’ve arrived.”

“Have you been well?”

“Yeah.”

Alon responded briefly to the casual greetings from the two shadowy figures. Even though he was already aware that he had boarded the same ship as them, there was still an inexplicable feeling of intimidation when standing in front of them.

It was likely due to the subtle misunderstandings between them that made him naturally wary. From Alon’s perspective, he couldn’t afford to let them discover that there was indeed some misunderstanding.

So, after exchanging simple pleasantries, Alon busied himself by picking up snacks from around the ballroom and making small talk with them.

But then—

“Ah.”

Unfortunately, Alon made eye contact with the one man he least wanted to face: Marquis Filboid.

Up until just a moment ago, Duke Artia and Count Zenonia had been engaged in conversation, but as soon as they saw Marquis Filboid, their lips shut tight. The moment the marquis began walking toward them, their expressions stiffened.

Although Artia and Zenonia were undoubtedly strong in the underworld, in the political arena, they were still beneath Marquis Filboid. Having survived countless political battles, he had the ability to inflict damage both internally and externally with nothing more than his words, and that made them tense.

At the same time, several of the nobles attending the gathering noticed that Marquis Filboid was approaching Count Palatio.

“I… I lost…! So please, spare me….!”

The marquis muttered dejectedly, and not only the nobles who had been watching him, but also Duke Artia and Count Zenonia, were shocked by what they heard.

It was no wonder—every noble present was well aware of how much influence Marquis Filboid wielded in the political world. They also knew that since the marquis had begun his rise to power, he had never once bowed his head to anyone.

So, when every noble who witnessed the scene turned in astonishment toward Alon, who had seemingly made the marquis declare defeat—

‘…? Me…? What… did I do…?’

Alon, who had been absentmindedly responding to the other two ladies’ conversation while snacking on financiers, could only look utterly confused.

The seeds I got from raiding the squirrel’s nest added up to exactly 100.

I never imagined I’d be able to get seeds like this.

‘And…’

“I also gained a new skill.”

There were various types of titles.

Some offered options that increased stats like abilities, attack power, or defense, while others rarely granted new skills.

This time, it was the latter.

“Confirm!”

[Exploration LV. 1]

Grade: E

Category: Active

Experience: 0.00%

Description: Explores objects, items, and living beings within a 10-meter radius of the caster.

Mana Consumption: 500

Cooldown: 60 seconds

Search Range: 10m

Effect: +10% Search Range

Hiro decided to test the newly acquired skill.

“Explore!”

[Exploration skill activated.]

[Please specify the target for exploration.]

“Hmm… seeds?”

[Exploring…]

[Exploration complete.]

[No seeds were found within a 12-meter radius.]

[Exploration skill experience slightly increased.]

With the skill effect and title options, the search range extended by about 20%, covering 12 meters.

Unfortunately, there were no seeds within the search range.

“Well, no big deal. Let’s plant these for now.”

“Kyuu!”

Hiro returned to the garden plot with Pepper, holding a hoe.

Sweet potato seeds had already been planted on one side.

“Let’s plant the tomatoes a bit further away.”

“I’ll help, kyuu!”

“Alright.”

Hiro swung the hoe and began to turn over the soil extensively.

[Land Clearing skill activated.]

[+15% Work Speed]

[-13% Stamina Consumption while working]

[Land Clearing skill experience slightly increased.]

[Job experience gained.]

Thud! Thud! Thud!

“Kyuuu!”

Pepper, trying to assist, rapidly dug into the ground with its front paws as it moved forward.

Its speed was quite impressive.

“Not bad, huh?”

“I won’t lose either.”

Hiro also increased his pace.

The initial garden plot was relatively soft, making it easier to dig up.

However, once beyond that area, the ground became harder.

Thud! Thud!

“Whew… this is tougher than I thought.”

“Kyuu… my paws hurt… kyuu…”

What should we do?

Hiro, after a moment of pondering, came up with a good idea.

“Pepper, let’s sprinkle some water.”

“Kyuu? Water?”

“Yeah. If we water it a bit, it’ll soften up, making it easier to dig.”

“Kyuu!”

“Alright. Watering!”

[Watering skill activated.]

[Watering skill experience slightly increased.]

Swoosh!

Hiro used the skill to sprinkle water over the hard ground.

Once he thought the water had soaked in enough, he swung the hoe again.

Thunk!

“Oh! This is much better than before!”

The ground was slightly damp, but noticeably softer, making it much easier to dig compared to before.

[Land Clearing skill activated.]

[Land Clearing skill experience slightly increased.]

[Job experience gained.]

[Level up!]

While clearing the land, the sound of leveling up rang out.

Hiro opened the status window.

“Status Window!”

[Status Window]

Agility: 5 + 10

Wisdom: 5 + 10

Luck: 10 + 10

<Special Attributes>

Mana: 5 + 75

Remaining Attribute Points: 25

“What should I do…? Should I increase it?”

The decision was tough.

Once attributes were increased, they couldn’t be reversed.

Hiro originally planned to learn more before deciding.

However, even after searching the internet, he couldn’t figure out which attribute to focus on.

‘Some jobs failed after increasing special attributes… but some say they’re crucial.’

Spirit Farmer was an EX-rank special job.

There was no reference material available.

“Well, I have no choice. For now…”

Hiro allocated the attributes based on the forum posts he had read so far.

“10 to Strength, 10 to Stamina, and 5 to Mana.”

He increased Strength and Stamina by 10 and invested the rest in Mana, then closed the window.

Was it because of the attribute increase?

“Wow… I feel stronger!”

Hiro’s grip on the hoe tightened.

When he swung the hoe again, the soil was dug up more easily than before.

“Kyuu! Master! You’re so fast, kyuu!”

Pepper was startled to see Hiro suddenly increase speed and quickly tried to match the pace.

They cleared the land, made furrows, and planted seeds along the way.

[Seed Planting skill activated.]

[Growth Speed +10%]

[Harvest Yield +5%]

[Seed Planting skill experience slightly increased.]

[Skill Level Up!]

[Seed Planting LV. 1 -> Seed Planting LV. 2]

With the Seed Planting skill reaching Level 2, all the tomato seeds were planted.

“Final step! Watering!”

“Kyuu!”

[Watering skill activated.]

Swoosh!

Water spread over the garden plot, quickly soaking into the soil.

“Good work. Now, how about we eat some sweet potatoes?”

“Kyuu! Sounds great, kyuu!!!”

“But before that…”

Hiro checked Pepper’s condition.

Was it from digging in the watered soil?

Pepper’s gray fur was completely covered in mud, making it look quite filthy.

“Kyuu, kyuu… Wh-Why are you looking at me like that, kyuu?”

“Well… Pepper, you’re too dirty.”

“D-Dirty, kyuu?!”

“Yeah. So…”

Hiro smiled and grabbed Pepper.

Sensing something was off, Pepper tried to escape, but Hiro held on tight.

“Whimper… whimper…”

“M-Master… this is scary, kyuu…”

“It’s okay. It’s for your own good.”

“Kyuu…”

“Let’s get you cleaned up.”

That day, Pepper was scrubbed by Hiro until all the mud was gone.

***

“Hmm… this is such a curious place.”

Hiro entered the shrine.

Pepper was sleeping outside, likely exhausted from the bath.

‘Animals really dislike bathing.’

“Can spirits be considered animals?”

Anyway, Hiro had given Pepper a thorough wash, but Pepper looked betrayed and refused to make eye contact—until Hiro offered a sweet potato to make up for it.

Meanwhile, Hiro explored the shrine. He had previously done a brief exploration, but there wasn’t much to do after planting tomatoes.

“By the way, whose shrine is this, really?”

Hiro asked Pepper, but it didn’t seem to know much either.

“Let’s see… Explore!”

Hiro used the exploration skill.

[Exploration skill activated.]

[Please specify the target for exploration.]

“A hidden room?”

Ding!

[Skill level is too low to find a hidden room.]

[Exploration skill experience slightly increased.]

“Huh? I can’t find it?”

The skill’s low level limited its effectiveness. Hiro clicked his tongue in disappointment.

“Looks like it won’t be that easy.”

He continued exploring the shrine. Eventually, he came across a few doors he hadn’t seen before.

“Huh? What are these doors? They definitely weren’t here before…”

It was a wooden door he’d never seen before. Hiro grabbed the doorknob.

Ding!

[Entry denied.]

[You do not have the required permission.]

“Huh?”

A message appeared, stating he lacked the permission to open the door. The other doors were the same, all showing the same message, with no way to open them.

“Hmm…”

After wandering around for a while, Hiro ended up back at the altar.

“So, I can only access this place, huh?”

Hiro gazed at the altar. After harvesting sweet potatoes, he had already offered 200 of them at this altar. It was for the mysterious entity mentioned in the quest—an ‘unknown entity.’ The shrine bore the name ‘Shrine of the Forgotten God.’ By simple deduction, it seemed likely that the unknown entity was the owner of this shrine.

“A god of the spirit realm… so, a god of spirits?”

Who was the master of this shrine? There wasn’t enough information to determine the identity of the unknown entity.

“But…”

Hiro looked around.

When he first entered the shrine, it felt cold and eerie, like a ruin. Now, however, there was a faint sense of warmth, as if the atmosphere had shifted a bit.

“I don’t know who you are…”

But the quest had certainly been beneficial to Hiro.

Although it took the sweet potatoes, it offered useful job skills in return—a fair trade. These were the essential skills needed for farming in this place.

Hiro could feel that the quest-giving entity was friendly toward him. It seemed like a good symbiotic relationship could develop.

“I’ll be counting on you.”

***

A few more days passed.

“The tomatoes have grown quite well.”

“Kyuu!”

“It’s about time to set up the supports.”

Tomatoes are plants that need support. As the fruits grow heavier, the plant can break or the fruit can spoil if it touches the ground. Therefore, supports must be set up to hold the stems upright.

“First, I need to cut some nearby branches.”

“Kyuu! I’ll help too!”

Hiro and Pepper wandered around, gathering branches suitable for use as supports.

“Now, let’s…”

Hiro planted the branches firmly into the ground near the tomatoes.

“Pepper, can you go get some sweet potato vines?”

“Kyuu! Sure!”

There was nothing else to use for tying up the stems except sweet potato vines.

“Here you go, kyuu!”

“Good job.”

Hiro used the sweet potato vines to tie the tomato stems securely to the supports.

Pepper wanted to help too.

“Kyuu…”

But how could it possibly tie vines with its tiny front paws?

“Kyuu…”

Feeling dejected, Pepper slumped down with a sad expression.

“You just wait there.”

Hiro quickly tied the stems to the supports.

With the stems secured this firmly, the tomato plants should be able to bear fruit without collapsing.

“Whew… that should do it.”

Hiro straightened his back.

Crack!

An odd sound came from his back.

Bending over repeatedly to tie the stems had left his back feeling a bit sore.

“I can even feel back pain in the game.”

The Overlord game was designed to replicate all senses as realistically as possible, including pain. Of course, extreme pain, such as losing an arm or near-death pain, was suppressed.

But minor discomforts, like backaches or wrist pains, were still felt.

“They said it adds realism to the game… but this is one feature they could’ve left out.”

Hiro clicked his tongue and chomped down on a raw sweet potato. The sweet, nutty flavor spread in his mouth, easing the pain a little.

“Kyuu…”

Pepper watched him. Pepper was deeply shocked by its inability to help Hiro.

‘I want to be helpful to my master too…’

“Kyuuu…”

Then, Pepper saw something. Hiro, patting his lower back, seemed to be suffering from back pain despite his young age. Pepper’s small, dark eyes sparkled.

‘I can help too, kyuu…’

***

Twenty minutes later.

Hiro was startled to see Pepper returning, covered in dirt and other debris.

“Where did you go?”

“I gathered herbs for you, master, kyuu!”

“Herbs?”

“Kyuu!”

Upon closer inspection, Pepper was carrying something that resembled herbs in its mouth, wagging its tail. The thoughtfulness was admirable, but…

“First, let’s take a bath.”

“…Kyuu?”

Round 161

Prev | TOC | Next

I couldn’t have imagined it at all.

Because I naturally assumed that Pururuk, with the appearance of a deer with horns, was male.

“Pregnant…?”

“Expecting a baby! So this means…”

“Congratulations.”

Seon-ah said with a satisfied smile, as if she was placing a period at the end of the sentence.

“A kid!”

“Ara, let’s call it a baby.”

“A baby!”

Ara, with an excited expression, carefully looked at Pururuk with just her eyes.

– A baby Pururuk is coming… how cute would that be?

– We need to prepare some tonics! Your Majesty, leave it to me.

“Yes, please take care of it, Mammon.”

First of all, it was a relief that it wasn’t an illness.

Honestly, even though I brought Seon-ah, I didn’t expect she could solve a monster’s illness.

Pururuk quietly leaned on Seon-ah’s knee and fell asleep.

It seemed to enjoy the soothing touch.

We watched the leader Pururuk for a moment and then whispered quietly.

“Is there anything we can do to help?”

“Well, even though Pururuk is a monster, monsters aren’t that different from animals. A space for stability, temperature, and food are important.”

“Great. I’ll bring Kkumuris right away.”

We need to build a hut-like structure where the leader Pururuk is.

Of course, we have to ask first.

Since it’s sleeping now, we’ll prioritize water and food first.

Luckily, that’s all I had with me.

“What does Pururuk like?”

I’ve fed it strawberries before, but honestly, I’m not sure.

Would it prefer something like carrots? Or maybe something savory?

‘Lettuce? Potatoes? Ember grill?’

Hmm, it might like beans.

While I was pondering this for a while, Seon-ah murmured beside me.

“If it’s in the same family as deer, it might like grass.

But since it’s a monster with different traits, let’s just bring everything you have, Brother.”

“Right. We didn’t have to worry after all.”

We can just bring it and let it choose.

If it doesn’t choose, it’s unfortunate, but there’s nothing we can do.

While discussing ideas like carrying hot spring water and other concerns, the leader Pururuk opened its eyes.

Lick.

“Kya-ha-ha.”

It licked Ara’s cheek, who was cautiously petting Pururuk beside Seon-ah.

It seemed like it was thanking us for taking care of it.

“While talking, it’s already awake. Let’s ask it now.”

We immediately used Ara’s translation to ask the leader various questions.

It agreed to reinforcing its dwelling.

However, it showed no particular appetite when it came to food.

After talking, it seemed like the lack of energy was due to not eating because of the lack of appetite.

“Well, that’s a bit concerning. Let’s bring all the crops you have, Brother.”

“Okay.”

I decided to go to the Slime Village alone, leaving the rest here.

There’s no need for everyone to go back and forth.

Upon returning to the village, I first kidnapped two Kkumuris.

They just trusted their bodies to me without a thought.

Then I collected crops from Bokkeum by type.

“Let’s go, Purr.”

-Hee-hing.

I rode on Purr, who works hard for us every day.

Since the Slime Village and Pururuk’s habitat were in completely opposite directions, it took a bit more time, but we returned in less than 20 minutes.

“You came back quickly!”

Seon-ah accepted the Kkumuris in my arms and petted them.

-Heh-heh.

“Guys, can you create a small space here for Pururuk to stay?”

As I conveyed my words, the Kkumuris started moving leisurely.

“I’ll help.”

“Oh! I’ll join too!”

Mammon joined the Kkumuris, and Ara, not to be outdone, communicated with the Kkumuris and ran around to gather the necessary materials.

In the meantime, I laid out the crops I brought.

“I wasn’t sure what it would like, so I brought everything. Pick something.”

Not only the leader Pururuk but also the members of the herd were comfortably wandering around nearby.

Some showed curiosity, sniffing around us with their cute noses.

-Pururuk.

The leader Pururuk, who hadn’t made a sound in a while, sniffed at the crops I brought.

Then its ears perked up, and it started to slowly get up, as if moving unconsciously.

“Oh, it’s choosing, it’s choosing.”

The first crop that caught its interest was the mini carrot. The leader sniffed it up close and then lightly put its mouth on it.

Crunch.

Even though it was an adult, it was about the size of a fawn on Earth, so even the mini carrot seemed large. I quickly prepared the other crops, worried that the size might make it hard to eat.

-Pururuk.

Gradually, more Pururuks gathered around. It seemed like the delicious smell caught their attention.

I had brought a generous amount of various crops, enough for everyone there to have a bite without any problem.

Crunch, crunch.

The leader, who was munching on lettuce, tried the prepared bell pepper, potato, and savory food, then began to eat eagerly without hesitation.

“Do you guys want some too?”

-Pururuk?

Leaving the leader to feed itself, I gently scattered the crops for the gathered Pururuks to eat comfortably.

The creatures started picking up the crops that fell to the ground little by little.

“Come here. That’s right.”

Seon-ah was tempting the Pururuks with crops in her hands. The others were more sensitive, unlike the leader, and didn’t easily approach, but some eventually succumbed to the temptation of food.

“So cute.”

Thanks to Seon-ah, everything went smoothly. Watching Seon-ah pet the approaching Pururuk’s head, I couldn’t help but acknowledge her.

Unlike me, who couldn’t tell the leader Pururuk’s condition just by looking, it was amazing that she quickly knew it was pregnant.

‘I suppose most ordinary people would find it hard to notice?’

Even if it didn’t seem like much, Seon-ah’s knowledge and abilities as a veterinarian were more impressive than I thought.

Of course, that’s from a layman’s perspective, as I’ve never raised a dog or a cat.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong !”

At that moment, Ara came running up to me.

I thought she was asking for food, so I quickly prepared tomatoes, then realized that wasn’t the case.

“Tada!”

“Wow! You made it so quickly!”

Before I knew it, there was a cozy-looking shelter. It was a cave-like structure using the plants and branches around it, not only built but also decorated diligently.

Thanks to that, it became a hut that fit well with the dreamy atmosphere of this forest.

-Pururuk.

The leader, who was busy eating, turned its head at Ara’s voice to see its new shelter. Then, with a potato in its mouth, it trotted over to the hut.

-Pururuk!

“Do you like it? That’s great!”

Ara cheered and raised her arms in triumph.

Fortunately, it seemed the Pururuk was satisfied. I was worried because our perspectives might differ from those of the Pururuks, but it seemed I worried for nothing.

-Hoo, I worked hard on this.

-Hmph! From what I saw, Lord Ara did most of the work!

-I, I also worked hard carrying the branches!

I handed each of the quarreling ones a crop. A cucumber for Mammon and a strawberry for Frey.

They both quietly started eating the crops with both hands. Their simple demeanor made me smile unintentionally.

“Ara, you worked hard too.”

“Yes! It was fun!”

Ara also grabbed a cucumber and began crunching on it energetically.

Since things turned out this way, we decided to have our meal here. Instead of making a fire, we would eat the crops as they were, for the first time in a while.

‘Of course, with some dressing sauce, I made a salad using the dressing method Jae-seong taught me.’

Cucumber, bell pepper, lettuce, onion, and ember grill. Chopping them up and drizzling with sauce made for a satisfying meal on its own.

To her taste, Seon-ah left out the onions and lettuce, adding raw sweet potato and strawberries instead. The combination might not seem suitable, but seeing her enjoy it meant it was good.

“Eat a lot. Give birth to a healthy baby.”

Ara petted the leader Pururuk’s back while munching on cucumbers and raw branches. Whether or not it noticed, Pururuk was busily munching away at the crops, determined to make up for the missed meals.

‘I’m glad it’s happy.’

Seeing it eat so well after it had been starving from a lack of appetite made me feel full, too. Is this what adults mean when they say just watching is satisfying?

“Brother, I’ve made a decision.”

“Hmm? What all of a sudden?”

Seon-ah, having finished her salad, spoke with a serious expression.

“Up until now, I just chose my major and studied because I liked it and was interested in it. But I’ve never seriously thought about my career path.”

“Wasn’t it your dream to get a job as a guild staff member?”

“Uh… It still is my dream. But the reason I wanted to do it was more because I liked seeing Awakeners rather than it being a true career dream.”

I could understand that.

Just before I became an Awakener, I had a huge admiration for the Awakening industry.

Right after becoming an Awakener, I was filled with enthusiasm. The intense feeling that I finally belonged to the industry I had longed for.

But that enthusiasm vanished after three years of digging around. Now, even though I can interact freely with the people I once admired, it doesn’t excite me anymore.

‘Now, my children are the most important part of my life.’

Ara, Gomgom, Frey, Mammon, Slime, Kkumuris, Goblin, Alfheim, Woofy, Purr, and Chirpy.

They are the most precious beings along with my family.

I wouldn’t mind retiring from the Awakening industry for them. Of course, I’m already living a life that’s not much different from retirement.

Other Awakeners have a set quota of work as soon as they join a guild. That’s why they are busy going to dungeons, getting assigned tasks, and subjugating them.

‘If you look at it that way, I’m still making deliveries.’

Anyway, I respect Seon-ah’s opinion.

Now, I have the power to take care of my whole family, so I have no worries no matter what decision she makes.

“I want to study veterinary medicine properly.”

“Oh, veterinary medicine?”

“Yes. If you think about it, while monster anatomy and various research and experiments are actively conducted, there’s no such thing as monster veterinary medicine.”

“That’s true. Monsters are still more like targets to be subjugated.”

The history of the Awakening industry isn’t very long. It’s been less than 50 years. So there are still many unknowns and areas that need development.

“Monster veterinary medicine… Oh, that’s interesting!”

Right now, people might ask, “What’s that?” and treat it as quirky. But I had a strong feeling that monsters would soon be domesticated and commercialized, as I had seen during my visit to the Skyscraper.

Once domestication happens, it’s only natural that companion monsters will appear. History has proven this.

Even if they’re not companion monsters, just pioneering a new field of monster veterinary medicine and becoming an expert will create demand, especially due to livestock monsters.

“But Seon-ah, are you serious?”

“Of course!”

“Then should I help you?”

“You? How?”

The mention of the Skyscraper reminded me of what I saw and heard there.

“Do you remember that I was invited to the Skyscraper guild and went there?”

“Yeah. You told me what happened then.”

As Seon-ah was speaking, her eyes widened, perhaps recalling the same thing I did.

“First, study veterinary medicine. Like you said, monsters are basically animals, so studying veterinary medicine will definitely help. Meanwhile, also study Chinese.”

“…Are you suggesting I talk to the Skyscraper? They’re a giant corporation.”

“Just keep studying. They might not accept you, but we should at least try. It’s for my sister, after all.”

“…Why are you being so cheesy all of a sudden, Brother?”

Though she said that, Seon-ah couldn’t meet my eyes and was awkwardly scraping the ground with her foot. Just say thank you.

“Can you do it?”

“Yes. I’ll really give it my best shot.”

Great. Then I’ll have to get in touch with the Skyscraper.

“That’s interesting,”

Katia asked with a glint in her eyes, watching Aiden being tossed around like a rag doll. Her tone suggested she found the situation intriguing.

“Are you really getting beaten up by a ghost right now?”

“Instead of just standing there, how about you come and help—!”

Before Aiden could finish his sentence, his body was flung in another direction.

Meanwhile, ghosts that exist in the inner dimension, a space overlaid onto the real world, typically cannot exert much influence in the physical realm.

Usually, that is.

Unless they were someone formidable enough in life to break such laws.

This indicated that the ghost tossing Aiden around must have been a powerful person while alive.

“Quite the nerve you’ve got, you bastard!”

Though Katia couldn’t hear it, the Knight of Dawn’s snarling voice was ferocious.

Despite his fierce tone, his appearance was undeniably refined: golden hair, blue eyes, a handsome face, and armor fitting of a knight. If only he stayed quiet, his noble appearance could be praised.

“What’s this? Are you all bark and no bite? You brat, fresh out of the cradle and already begging for death!”

If only he didn’t keep spewing such remarks, perhaps that noble image could be salvaged.

Aiden thought so as he was once again hurled into the air.

“Senior, calm down for a moment—”

“There’s no way I’m getting mixed up with someone like you!”

Soon, the Knight of Dawn raised his fist, his anger visibly peaking, preparing to strike.

No matter how you look at it, this seems dangerous.

“Please, just stop!”

With those words, a divine aura suddenly burst from Aiden’s body.

The Knight of Dawn, who was ready to charge, froze.

His eyes now reflected doubt and astonishment.

“…Divine power?”

The Knight of Dawn murmured blankly.

“You, I could tell you had the scent of someone who harnessed energy, but how are you also using divine power?”

Aiden let out a wry smile as he brushed off the dust covering him.

“I did tell you, didn’t I, ‘Senior.'”

Yes, showing off the ability to use multiple supernatural powers would pique his interest.

“I’m greeting you as a junior. When it comes to being ‘multi-powered,’ doesn’t that make us senior and junior?”

People who can use multiple abilities have always been rare throughout history, and one of those rare individuals was the Knight of Dawn standing before him.

It’s no wonder he was loved in many parts of the continent.

No one could have expected a person capable of wielding multiple supernatural abilities, each unique to different nations, to exist.

“I need your help.”

This is precisely why Aiden sought him out.

There is no one else in this world who could guide him through every aspect of his ‘growth path.’

“To put it bluntly, I desperately need your help, Senior. If not, something truly disastrous will happen.”

Mainly, the fate of the world is at stake.

Aiden is the only one who properly grasps the threat known as the ‘Main Scenario,’ a global-level crisis. If he fails, everyone will perish, no doubt about it.

“What nonsense is this? A minute ago, you were calling me overrated, and now you’re asking for my help—”

“That was just a lie to catch your attention. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to summon your spirit in the first place.”

“Who else but a person would dare to strike the continent’s first knight and hero?”

From the side, Katia was staring at Aiden with an incredulous look.

Although she couldn’t hear the conversation, her eyes seemed to say, “Who in their right mind would fall for such a story?”

– System Message –

You have contacted ‘Meyer Belford, the Knight of Dawn.’

▶ While not a key figure in the Main Scenario, he possesses extraordinary abilities, granting him the status of an ‘important character.’

-Your bond level with the target has increased to Level 1!

-This is linked to the skill ‘Weaver of Fate’!

‘He really is that simple.’

Aiden let out a hollow laugh as he glared at the system message.

‘I thought that just lightly touching on this person’s traits would be enough to make him fall for it, and while I expected it, it’s still a bit absurd how predictable he is.’

“Who would fall for such an insincere flattery?”

Even though he is saying that, the fact that he’s still going along with it is even more chilling…

The Knight of Dawn, Meyer, crossed his arms and, despite maintaining a sulky expression, opened his mouth.

“In this era, there’s someone who would push aside someone like me. Something like a Lionheart… or whatever?”

It’s strange how he knows that kind of information despite being a ghost, but it’s clear that he’s someone who cares obsessively about his ‘honor’ and ‘reputation.’ Just from how easily he fell for Aiden’s provocation, you can tell that. It would be stranger if he didn’t care about the human who overtook him for the title of strongest knight.

However…

“It just so happens that I’m the husband of that Lionheart.”

At Aiden’s words, Meyer’s eyes narrowed sharply, but his expression soon twisted into something bizarre at Aiden’s follow-up.

“I can vouch for it. Even that person would find it hard to catch up to you, sir.”

From the corner of his vision, Aiden could see Katia’s mouth twitch as if she was holding back a laugh. It was clear she was wondering what kind of nonsense Aiden was talking about, but he was speaking from the heart. It wasn’t simply a matter of who was stronger or not—once you add a certain condition, the statement becomes an undeniable truth.

If this man had just a bit more ‘time.’

Without a doubt, even Noel wouldn’t have been able to surpass him.

For a dead soul to linger in the living world, two conditions must be met:

They must be a figure of such greatness that their name is known throughout history, and…

They must have an unresolved ‘grudge’ so deeply rooted that they can’t find peace even in death.

In the case of the Knight of Dawn…

“There’s still so much left unfinished for you, isn’t there?”

The expression of the Knight of Dawn changed drastically. Where once there had been nothing but anger and fury, now, for the first time, there was a look of surprise in response to Aiden’s words.

Though the Knight of Dawn was just a character within the game’s lore, he still left a deeply profound impression. It was said that the heights he tragically couldn’t reach due to realizing his talent too late were succinctly described in one sentence:

‘It is a realm beyond human challenge.’

Even the legendary tales of his exploits across the continent were all just his training in an attempt to reach that realm.

Meyer, who had been glaring at Aiden, suddenly chuckled.

“You say interesting things. There’s no way all of that was recorded.”

“Consider it the devotion of a junior who respects his senior.”

“Nonsense. You just approached me to use me. You think I can’t see that?”

“To be honest, you’re right.”

While Meyer was left speechless by Aiden’s brutal honesty, Aiden shrugged and continued.

“But honestly, sir, is there anyone better to use than me?”

“What?”

“How long do you think it’ll take before another multi-talented ability holder like me shows up?”

“What are the chances that such a person would seek you out and speak to you directly?”

“And how likely do you think it is that, after overcoming all those odds, they would swear to fulfill your wishes for you?”

Meyer’s frown deepened.

“You really do know how to say the most unpleasant things, don’t you?”

It was unpleasant because it was the truth, as the following words would make clear.

“So, what do you want me to help with? I’m a ghost, you know. I can’t do anything significant.”

‘Got him.’

Aiden smiled slyly to himself as he picked up a nearby artifact, something he had taken note of when they first entered. It was a bracelet, designed in such a way that wearing it would cause no discomfort.

“To put it another way, sir, there are things only a ghost can do.”

“What?”

“Why don’t you step inside first and see for yourself?”

With that, Aiden began explaining what Meyer could ‘help’ with.

‘I can’t believe I’m stuck with this guy,’ Meyer seemed to mutter to himself in exasperation.

A little later…

“Hmm.”

Aiden exhaled softly as he looked down at the bracelet, which now glowed with an eerie light. It was clear that Meyer’s soul was well-contained within.

“This should do…”

He had achieved his primary goal. The spiritual medium, Rania, had successfully contacted Meyer’s soul. And although he hadn’t retrieved it yet, the first prince’s skill, which was perfectly suited for handling such a soul, was still within reach.

With all the necessary components gathered, the preparations to solve the ‘Ghost Knight Incident’ of Act 1 were complete.

“Is it all done?”

“Yes. Now we just have to leave.”

“So, you should be able to answer this question without hesitation.”

“By the way,” Katia tilted her head slightly and interrupted Aiden’s words.

“Don’t you think we’ve been here for too long?”

“Huh?”

“That thing… it wasn’t there earlier.”

Following her words, Aiden turned his gaze.

Embedded in the wall was a crystal that was now glowing a clear red.

It was obvious to anyone that it was about to sound an ‘alarm,’ and the entire room was being tinted with the same red hue.

Seeing the surroundings turn crimson, Aiden’s expression hardened.

“It looks like it’s a system that activates automatically if someone stays inside for too long?”

“Instead of analyzing it, maybe we should stop it first…!”

Aiden hurriedly moved, startled.

But in an instant—

The alarm, which had been about to emit a red light, shattered with a ‘crack’.

It had been sliced cleanly in half by a sword strike, delivered with terrifying speed.

Aiden stood dazed, staring in the direction from which the attack had come.

Before he knew it, Noel, with a sigh, was sheathing her sword.

“I don’t know what you were doing, but I suggest you refrain from entering places like this carelessly. It can cause quite a bit of trouble.”

“Lady Noel?”

He had clearly heard earlier from Stella that Noel wasn’t feeling well and had gone back.

“Where did you even come from…? Didn’t you say you were going back?”

“I was going to return. But when I saw Aiden diligently infiltrating the palace’s security with Her Highness, I decided to follow you, just in case.”

“Since you seemed to be in danger, I stepped in to help.”

So, she had noticed everything.

And instead of stopping it, she just quietly followed along the whole time.

‘Well, whatever.’

Thanks to her, the situation was resolved smoothly without any trouble.

He should at least thank her for that.

“Thanks to you, we got through it. I appreciate it, Lady Noel.”

“…Yes.”

‘What’s with this reaction?’

Her voice was so stiff and blunt that even a wooden puppet would have seemed more lively.

Noel quickly turned her head and pulled down her hat as if trying to avoid making eye contact with Aiden.

“Follow me. I’ll show you the way out. Let’s head back to the headquarters immediately. I’d rather not let this night drag on any longer.”

As Noel’s unusually curt tone caused Aiden to tilt his head in confusion, Katia, standing behind them, shot a suspicious glance at Noel’s back.

“…It feels like something’s a little different about her.”

She muttered to herself as they made their way out.

Meanwhile, back at the military headquarters, an unusual commotion was brewing.

The reason?

Noel, who had attended the banquet with her fiancé, was the cause.

On her way back to her private quarters after parting with Aiden, she had been creating quite the ‘stir.’

“Uh, Lady Noel? Was the banquet alright today—”

The person who tried to speak to her immediately shut their mouth.

It was only natural.

One look at Noel’s expression as she strode down the corridor, and anyone would quickly realize that now was not the time to engage in conversation.

“A- are you alright?”

“I’m fine.”

“If you’re not feeling well, I’ll contact the medical unit immediately—”

“I said I’m fine.”

“Eek.”

One of the people nearby, who had been worrying about her, inadvertently swallowed nervously.

It was probably because Noel’s response was so cold and sharp.

Basically, the regular meetings of the Blue Moon often end without any special incidents.

The previous meeting was extended significantly due to Deus’ outburst in response to Seolrang’s question, but that was merely an exception.

Once everyone but Deus and Yutia had internalized the notion that there were certain questions they should never ask Deus, such exceptions could be avoided.

Although Deus, who usually remained silent, would occasionally speak up whenever the topic of the Great Moon was mentioned, those conversations no longer dragged on.

This was because Rine and Radan consistently redirected the conversation.

Thus, today’s meeting should have proceeded peacefully, unlike the last one, and thanks to their efforts, it was expected to conclude in under 20 minutes.

[By the way, Seolrang, that person said he was going to the colony this time, did you meet him?] Yutia asked Seolrang.

[I’m going to marry Great Moon!]

[What?]

That was before Seolrang answered.

In the beginning, the atmosphere wasn’t all that bad.

The other members of the Blue Moon were aware that Seolrang sometimes used exaggerated expressions, and Yutia thought it was just one of those moments.

But then.

[That person is truly wonderful. No wonder Seolrang likes him.]

[Exactly! That’s why I’m going to marry him!]

The moment they realized that Seolrang wasn’t just exaggerating but was actually serious.

[…What are you talking about?]

Yutia’s face, usually calm under any circumstance, suddenly hardened, and the other members of the organization held their breath at the sight.

Everyone at the meeting knew exactly when her expression and tone would take that turn.

‘She’s holding back.’

‘She’s really holding back.’

‘She’s holding it in.’

Deus, Radan, and Rine immediately sensed Yutia’s mood and recoiled.

Even though it was just a virtual meeting using magic projection, they instinctively knew how terrifying Yutia could be when she was angry.

But the three of them assumed that this storm would soon pass.

Seolrang knew Yutia well enough and feared her too.

However.

[I mean it! I’m going to marry the Great Moon!]

Contrary to their expectation that Seolrang would back down, she confidently declared her intention as though it was a final decision.

The other members of the organization were left dumbfounded.

Yutia briefly closed her eyes, as if trying to regain control of her expression, then opened them and asked,

[Seolrang, do you understand what you’re saying right now?]

[Of course I do! We’re going to become a family. I’m confident I’ll do well!]

Yutia closed her eyes again, as if feeling dizzy, then opened them slowly.

With a faint smile, as if trying to soothe a child, she spoke softly.

[Even if you’re confident, that’s impossible.]

[Why?]

[Because we are the shadows of the Great Moon.]

[…?? Can’t we get married and still be shadows?]

Seolrang’s face showed no sign of being convinced, instead asking, what’s the big deal?

A crack formed in the faint smile that had returned to Yutia’s face.

[Listen carefully, Seolrang. We are the shadows of the Great Moon. Shadows can’t stand by the side of their master. Do you understand what I’m saying?]

Yutia’s face, which anyone present could see held a subtle yet distinct edge of anger, made the other members think that this conversation would finally come to an end.

[…]

Seolrang, seemingly feeling Yutia’s emotions more clearly this time, shrank back a little.

But then, as if gathering her resolve, she blinked and answered,

[Still! I’m going to get married!]

Even after Yutia’s growing irritation became clear, Seolrang’s firm declaration left the members momentarily stunned.

“I know! Anyway, the most important thing is what the Great Moon thinks!”

The organization members couldn’t help but gape at the situation, as Seolrang was openly declaring war against Yutia.

As Yutia and Seolrang began glaring intently at each other, Rine and Radan had a single question running through their minds.

What exactly happened between Seolrang and the Great Moon to make her act like this?

“Do you really think that person will choose you?”

“Master said that I’m not too bad!”

Of course, Alon didn’t say that sincerely but merely to comfort her when Seolrang was whining and asking if she was disliked.

However, cutting out the context, only that part of the conversation surfaced, causing Rine and Radan to react.

“What, what did you say…?”

Just as Yutia was about to be hit by shock.

“What exactly happened between you and that person, Seolrang?” Deus asked, attempting to change the subject.

“So,” Seolrang began recounting her interactions with the Great Moon, slowly shifting the atmosphere to one of calm.

Seeing that Deus had effectively defused the tense situation, Rine and Radan exchanged satisfied glances.

“…And that’s what happened.”

“I see.”

“So? Isn’t that amazing!?”

“Indeed. Hmm—listening to your story suddenly reminds me of the majesty the Great Moon showed in the north half a year ago.”

[[…!]]

As Seolrang’s story neared its conclusion, taking about 20 minutes, both Rine and Radan wore expressions of regret.

Deus, seizing the opportunity during their moment of carelessness, seamlessly shifted the conversation back to the events of half a year ago.

Just like that—

“…I still vividly remember it, the figure of that person, standing against the sunset on the ashen, barren land.”

“Oh! I know exactly what you mean!”

[[Ah.]]

Before Rine and Radan could redirect the conversation, they saw Seolrang eagerly agreeing, as if she’d been waiting for this topic, and their faces darkened.

Two hours later.

“Hmph… that was quite a lengthy tale.”

As they expected, Deus’ story had finally come to an end, and both Rine and Radan felt a sense of relief, thinking the meeting was finally over.

“Anyway, you can’t marry that person!”

“I can!”

“You can’t!”

“I can!!”

“You can’t!!”

“I CAN!!!”

[[…]]

With the argument between Yutia and Seolrang flaring up once again like it was nothing, both Rine and Radan engraved a new realization in their minds that day.

Yutia exhibits a surprisingly childish side whenever the Great Moon is involved, even just a little.

It wasn’t exactly the kind of information they wanted to know, Rine and Radan thought as they gazed up at the sky, which had already begun to brighten.

***

About a week later, Alon finally managed to escape from the desert.

“Then I’ll visit you again next time, Count!”

Rad, the leader of the Golden Hair Merchant Guild, bowed so deeply it was as though he might be mistaken for a mere servant.

However, none of the merchants, mercenaries, or even the mages present questioned Rad’s behavior.

They were all aware of the growing renown of Count Palatio from the colony, and among them, the mages and mercenaries had witnessed the Count’s power firsthand.

“I’ll see you when fate allows.”

“Thank you very much!”

As Rad bowed at a 110-degree angle and began to prepare the merchant guild for departure, someone spoke.

“Count.”

Just as the count was about to climb into the carriage, a voice called out to him. It was none other than Liyan, the daughter of the Red Mage Tower’s master.

“What’s the matter?” he asked.

“Are you planning to attend the magic conference next month?”

“Hmm.”

Alon clicked his tongue, his face remaining expressionless.

‘Magic conference, huh…’

A magic conference.

It was essentially an event where the mages from the various towers gathered once or twice a year to discuss the theories and experiments from their research and engage in friendly competitions.

‘I do want to go.’

In fact, Alon had been meaning to attend the magic conference for some time.

More specifically, he wasn’t so much interested in the research materials from the conference as he was in the “Central Tower” where the conference was held.

There was something in that place that could alleviate Alon’s critical shortage of magical power, at least to some extent.

Unfortunately, the Central Mage Tower’s policy required one to be affiliated with a tower to gain entry, so Alon responded,

“I would like to attend, but it seems I won’t be able to.”

“Huh? Why not?” Liyan asked.

“Because I’m not affiliated with any mage tower.”

Liyan looked slightly surprised by Alon’s words.

“…So, it’s true that you’re not associated with any tower?”

“It is. There’s no reason for me to lie about that.”

“Then, would you like to participate in the conference as a member of our Red Mage Tower?”

“As a member of the Red Mage Tower…?”

“Yes.”

Alon considered the unexpected proposal for a moment before responding,

“…Well, it’s certainly a good opportunity for me, but I don’t think I’ll be able to do much by simply attending under the Red Mage Tower’s name.”

“I’m not expecting anything in return. Just like last time, it would be enough if we could discuss magic topics together during the conference,” Liyan said, subtly glancing up at Alon.

‘Alright, that’s a pretty good deal,’ Alon thought.

Though he briefly wondered why Liyan was offering such favorable terms, he couldn’t find any reason to refuse, so he nodded.

“Then I’ll gratefully accept your offer. When should I head there?”

“I believe there’s about a month and a half left, but I’ll send you the exact schedule via letter or magic orb.”

“Understood.”

With that, the conversation concluded.

“See you then.”

Alon parted ways with the mages from the Red Mage Tower and began gathering some provisions from the first village he encountered after crossing the desert, preparing to return to his territory.

“Ah, Count!” Evan suddenly exclaimed, as if he had just remembered something, and delivered two pieces of news.

“What is it?”

“Well, it’s about Rine.”

“And?”

“I heard that she’s become a powerful figure in Lartania.”

“A powerful figure?”

“Yes. From what I’ve heard, she’s become one of the council members of the Triumvirate.”

“The Triumvirate… That’s the group responsible for the overall governance of the Labyrinth City, isn’t it?”

“That’s right.”

“…Rine?”

“Yes.”

“She’s certainly moving up in the world.”

The first piece of news was that Rine had risen to power in Lartania, a pleasant bit of news that might bring some benefits their way.

“And Radan…”

“Yes?”

“It seems he’s unified five of the Seven Archipelagos and has essentially become the Pirate King.”

“Hmm, is that a good thing?”

“I’m not sure if it’s good or not… but his bounty has now surpassed several million gold coins.”

“…Several million gold coins…?”

“Yes, apparently, it’s comparable to the bounty on the original Pirate King.”

“…”

The second piece of news was that Radan had transformed from a pirate into the Pirate King of the Somali Archipelago, a rather strange turn of events.

***

Sergius, one of the eight cardinals of Rosario, had held his position for over 20 years. He was a man who enjoyed luxury and indulgence, far from fitting the role of a cardinal.

He cared more for a bottle of wine than reading the scriptures, and valued holding a woman more than praying—he could easily be seen as a cancer within the Holy Nation.

“Pleasure to see you, Cardinal Yutia.”

“Likewise, Cardinal Sergius.”

Yutia Bloodia smiled faintly as she sat facing Sergius.

In truth, Sergius wasn’t close enough to Yutia to warrant a one-on-one meeting like this.

In fact, this was only the second time he had ever seen her face.

Still, there was a reason why Sergius had sought her out.

“I came to make you an offer. Would you care to listen?”

This was that reason.

“What kind of offer?”

“To be blunt, I need a ‘name.'”

“A name?”

Sergius nodded in response to Yutia’s question and answered.

“Yes, it seems there are those in league with impure elements on that side.”

“You want to use my name for a ‘conversion letter,’ correct?”

“Exactly.”

A conversion letter—it was a special letter that only the higher echelons of Rosario, specifically cardinals or above, could send. It was dispatched when there were suspicions that someone had allied themselves with heretics. To write such a letter, the approval of at least two cardinals was required.

However, Sergius had no intention of sending the conversion letter for its proper purpose.

The real reason was that he had accepted a bribe, and the reason he was now making this request to Yutia, whom he had never even properly met before, was—

“If you lend me your name, I will make sure you’re properly rewarded.”

“Reward, you say?”

“I’ll refrain from saying anything about the suspicious death of Cardinal Biantrea. How does that sound?”

Unlike the other cardinals, with whom he would have to share the bribe, Sergius believed that Yutia would be someone he didn’t have to split the payment with. This confidence came from the fact that—

“Cardinal Biantrea?” Yutia asked.

“I assume you’re not going to claim ignorance, considering the position you’re in.”

—he had gathered enough information to be sure that she, like himself and the other cardinals, had already been tainted.

“So, let’s not complicate things. If you lend your name for the conversion letter regarding Count Palatio, I’ll keep silent about this matter.”

Confident in his leisurely approach, Sergius was ready to conclude the conversation.

“…I see.”

The gentle smile that had adorned Yutia’s face moments ago faded, and she posed another question.

“So what you’re saying, Cardinal Sergius, is that you want me to lend my name?”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“To bury Count Alon Palatio?”

“…? Yes, that’s right,” Sergius nodded, but as he did—

“Hah…”

A soft, low chuckle escaped her lips.

And then.

“!”

The world turned red.

Everything had happened so suddenly.

Sergius, alarmed, tried to move, but soon realized that his body would no longer obey him.

Along with this realization came an overwhelming sense of dread, and he instinctively turned his trembling head toward its source.

And there he saw.

The woman, who had been smiling warmly just moments ago, now stared at him with vividly crimson eyes.

“Did you just tell me—”

Anyone could see the unmistakable rage radiating from her.

“—you’ll kill my God?”

It was in that moment that Sergius realized something had gone terribly wrong.

The place we ran to following Pururuk was south of the World Tree. If we were to be precise, it was east of the dungeon entrance. The slime village was to the west of the dungeon entrance, and the World Tree was to the north. We were heading into an area we had never visited before.

“The minimap sure is convenient.”

Even as I rode Purr, I kept checking the minimap now and then. I noticed cute icons representing me, Ara, and Mammon.

“Wow.”

As we followed Pururuk deeper, we entered a space that felt like a forest, different from the World Tree’s forest.

“If the World Tree’s forest feels like a refreshing forest of giant metasequoias with its large roots soaring high into the sky…”

This place exuded a mysterious atmosphere, like something out of a fantasy world. There were all sorts of vines, unknown deformed plants, and various peculiar trees covered with moss, creating a dreamy ambiance.

Could a wizard live in such a forest? And with Pururuk running ahead like a mythical creature, it was a fitting scene.

-Grr.

Pururuk, who had the appearance of a wild beast, was gradually slowing down. We seemed to be almost there.

“Wow.”

As the speed decreased, I started noticing things I hadn’t seen before. There were all sorts of insects, but instead of being creepy, they seemed mystical and cute.

And the numerous signs of life around us. Upon closer inspection, other Pururuks, who were timid and hiding, were wandering around us.

“Ara, do you remember this place?”

“Hmm? Hmm…”

Ara tilted her head cutely, trying not to say she couldn’t remember.

When I looked back, Mammon, who was holding onto my waist tightly, was watching the surroundings with an open mouth.

-Life is overflowing…

What kind of dungeon have you been living in? The scenery was indeed enough to leave anyone in awe.

-Hmph, but our village is prettier!

-No way! Our village will be the prettiest once it’s completed!

Leaving the quarreling kids behind, we arrived at a shallow plain. It was a very small plain, perhaps more like a basin, with a single Pururuk crouched in the middle, watching us.

It was the horned leader, Pururuk.

“Pururuk!”

Ara quickly got off Purr and ran towards it. If it were an alert Pururuk, it might have been startled and run away, but the leader Pururuk just glanced at Ara weakly.

‘It does seem to be in pain.’

But why, and where does it hurt?

There were no visible injuries on the surface, so perhaps it was an illness?

I got off Purr and approached carefully. The leader Pururuk lifted its head to check me out and then drooped weakly.

“Ara, can you ask where it hurts?”

“Okay.”

Ara then communicated with the leader Pururuk using gestures and movements. The leader Pururuk weakly shook its head in response.

“It says its stomach hurts.”

“Stomach? Hmm…”

What should we do if its stomach hurts? I took out the emergency medicine we carried from Bokkeum.

Strawberry potion!

It was a potion I always carried around, just in case.

“Where should we put it? Should I feed it directly?”

“What’s that over there?”

Ara pointed to a plant with wide leaves, perfect for use as a bowl. Ara quickly ran and picked a leaf. We poured the strawberry potion into the broad and concave leaf.

“Try drinking this.”

“Give it a try.”

When we handed the leaf over, the leader Pururuk flinched slightly. However, as if sensing our sincerity, it slowly brought its head over and started licking the strawberry potion.

“Good, good.”

Ara crouched next to Pururuk and gently petted it. Pururuk seemed to enjoy Ara’s touch, as it flapped its ears and drank the potion.

“Do you feel better?”

Though it’s a bit awkward to say it myself, the efficacy of my strawberry potion is quite good. The effect is immediate. After finishing the potion, Pururuk slumped back down.

“Hmm…?”

It seemed the effect wasn’t as great as I hoped. I was worried that Pururuk’s condition might be more severe than expected. If my potion couldn’t solve it, it meant it wasn’t an internal or external injury.

“Is it a disease, after all?”

In that case, maybe I should seek Mammon’s help. I should also check with Frey if they know anything.

“Hmm!”

“Uh-huh…”

But it seemed that neither Mammon nor Frey had any solutions either.

“We could use an antidote as a treatment, but it would be difficult without knowing why this creature is sick.”

“That’s true.”

Simply saying that its stomach hurts makes it hard to determine the exact illness or what precisely is wrong.

Moreover, Pururuk is a monster, so asking a veterinarian for help would be tricky. Of course, a vet might have a much higher chance of discovering something than someone like me.

“Taking Pururuk outside? That’s impossible, too.”

It’s such a sensitive and delicate creature that taking it out of the dungeon would be a major ordeal. It might even cause more trouble due to stress as soon as it leaves.

“Are you okay…!”

Ara’s eyes had become moist. It was a heartbreaking realization that there was nothing we could do, despite our concern.

Afterward, we tried feeding it detoxifying carrots and fruit juices, just in case, but it made no significant difference.

“This isn’t working.”

We couldn’t handle it on our own. We might have to bring a veterinarian from outside.

I felt uneasy about showing my dungeon to someone unfamiliar, but right now, Pururuk was more important than that. If I hadn’t known about its pain, it might have been different, but since I knew, I had to do my best to help.

“Let’s go outside first. We’ll need to ask around.”

“Where are we going?”

“Outside the dungeon. I’m going to ask some people I know.”

Ara looked at the lying Pururuk with a worried expression. Then she spoke to Mammon and Frey.

“Could you stay with Pururuk?”

“Of course, my lord!”

“Yes, leave it to us.”

When they agreed to stay, Ara finally felt reassured and nodded. Then she looked up at me and clenched her fist with determination.

“Let’s go right away!”

“Yeah, let’s go.”

We quickly rode Purr toward the dungeon entrance. We could run in a straight line thanks to the minimap.

I felt we weren’t as far from the entrance as I thought when we arrived.

“Thank you, Purr.”

Giving Purr a carrot, we stepped outside.

Now, who should I contact?

After a moment of thought, I made a call based on a sudden idea.

Ring, ring, ring.

The person on the other end picked up immediately.

“Hello? What’s up?”

It was Seon-ah.

There were many people I could contact, but I didn’t want to bother anyone with my personal matters, so I reached out to Seon-ah first.

“Seon-ah, are there veterinarians for monsters?”

“What? What do you mean by that all of a sudden?”

Seon-ah suddenly got excited as we spoke.

“What’s going on! Is someone sick? Who is it? Is it Gomgom? Kkumuri? Or is it a slime? It’s not Ara, is it?!”

“You’ve seen them before, remember those little deer-like creatures?”

“Oh! Pururuk?”

She remembered it right away, even after seeing it just once. I nodded, even though she couldn’t see it, and continued.

“Yes, that’s right. One of the Pururuks seems to be sick, but I can’t figure out why. I contacted you first just in case.”

“Hmm. Hold on a second.”

Seon-ah paused for a moment and then, after about three minutes, started speaking again.

“I’ll come over there now.”

“What? Why you?”

“Well, I’m actually majoring in dungeon studies. I’ve taken monster anatomy classes and studied a lot about monsters. I’ve even done some work in veterinary medicine.”

“Still…”

“Is Pururuk’s condition really serious?”

“No, it’s not that bad. It just seems a bit listless for now.”

“Then I’ll come and take a look first. After that, we can use any connections you have to find more help.”

I knew Seon-ah studied hard, but does it have anything to do with a sick monster?

‘She is a passionate dungeon enthusiast, but… hmm…’

Still, I should trust my sister for now. If it seemed urgent, I would have contacted Ara Hongryeon or Iron Blood from the start.

But since I knew it wasn’t a severe condition, I contacted Seon-ah first.

“When can you get here?”

“If I leave now, it’ll take about an hour or so.”

“Alright. I’ll wait with Ara at a nearby café.”

“Okay, I’ll head over right away.”

As soon as the call ended, I saw Ara waiting curiously for me.

“Seon-ah said she’ll come and check it out.”

“Wow! Seon-ah Seon-ah!”

Ara just beamed with excitement, her eyes sparkling.

So we came down from the mountain and waited for Seon-ah at a nearby café.

“Huff, huff, did you wait long? Let’s go right away.”

Seon-ah arrived, breathing heavily as if she had run, and urged us to hurry. Although I wanted to let her rest a bit, she seemed unlikely to listen, so I got up.

As we headed to the dungeon, Seon-ah naturally greeted the workers we passed by.

“Is it far?”

“No, it’s just a short distance.”

As soon as we entered, Purr was waiting at the entrance as if it had been anticipating us. I hadn’t said anything in advance, but Purr was quite considerate.

“Woof!”

“I’m sorry, Woofy, but we’ll be back soon.”

“Whine.”

Since Woofy’s appearance might make Pururuks wary, I soothed the excited Woofy by petting its chin.

Then, I sat behind Seon-ah and Ara on Purr.

“Let’s go.”

As we rode toward Pururuk’s forest, Seon-ah looked around in awe at the unfamiliar scenery.

“Is there a place like this?”

“Doesn’t it feel like a scene from a fantasy comic?”

“Yeah, it’s amazing.”

We soon reached the place where the leader Pururuk was. There, Mammon and Frey were quietly bickering next to Pururuk.

“I’ll take better care of it, you dwarf!”

“Who are you calling a dwarf, you little kid!”

Seon-ah widened her eyes at the sight of Mammon.

“A goblin?”

Hearing Seon-ah’s voice, both Mammon and Frey reacted.

“Oh! Seon-ah, you’re here?”

“Gasp…”

Mammon froze at the unexpected encounter with Seon-ah, revealing a surprisingly shy side.

“This is Mammon, one of our family.”

“Oh, is this the goblin you told me about?”

I had mentioned a few times that I had recruited a goblin. Seeing Mammon in person was a bit much for him, so he had avoided it until now.

“Hello?”

“H-hello. I am Mammon, the Goblin King. It’s an honor to meet the sister of the great lord.”

“You’re so cute, and you speak so well.”

Mammon blushed at Seon-ah’s compliment. What an adorable little creature.

After the introductions, Seon-ah immediately checked on Pururuk. Having built some rapport through her experiences with Layla, Seon-ah had become friendlier, and Pururuk didn’t seem to mind her much.

“Oh?!”

“What is it? Do you know what’s wrong already?”

Seon-ah exclaimed in surprise as she examined Pururuk, touching it directly. Did she really find the cause so quickly?

However, Seon-ah remained silent for a moment, continuing to feel Pururuk, especially around its belly. Her expression gradually became more serious.

Is it something serious? I hoped that wasn’t the case.

Finally, Seon-ah removed her hands and looked at Pururuk with a still serious expression.

“This one…”

Gulp

Ara clenched her hands and listened intently to Seon-ah’s words.

“I think it might be pregnant.”

“…What?”

Pregnant?

I looked at the horned leader Pururuk.

Aren’t you a male?!

[Land Reclamation Skill…]

[Land Reclamation Skill’s experience has slightly…]

[Skill Level Up!]

[Land Reclamation LV. 1 → Land Reclamation LV. 2]

“Whew… that was tough.”

“Kyuu!!”

“You did well too.”

“Hehe…”

After finishing the sweet potato harvest, Hiro and Pepper gathered the vines on one side and prepared the ground for cultivation.

“Shall we pile the sweet potato vines on one side for now? Let’s move them.”

“Kyuu!”

Hiro, together with Pepper, piled the vines on one side.

“Now, let’s sow the seeds.”

“Kyuu!”

“Let’s make some holes in the furrows.”

“I can do it, kyuu!”

“How?”

“Like this!”

Pepper hurriedly ran over, jumped into the furrow, and thrust its foot in to create a hole for the seeds. The size and depth were just right.

“Good. You make the holes, and I’ll plant the seeds.”

“Kyuu!”

Pepper, eager to help Hiro, cheerfully continued making holes. Hiro followed, placing the seeds into the holes as they moved forward.

[You have used the Seed Sowing Skill.]

[The Seed Sowing Skill’s experience has slightly increased.]

“This should be enough.”

With only 53 seeds, planting was done quickly.

“Pepper.”

“Kyuu!”

“Time to water!”

[You have used the Watering Skill.]

Whoooosh!

“Make sure to water evenly.”

“Kyuu!”

Following Hiro’s instructions, Pepper watered every corner of the garden thoroughly.

[The garden is imbued with spirit energy.]

[The growth speed of sweet potatoes has increased.]

[The germination rate of sweet potatoes has risen.]

[The Watering Skill’s experience has slightly increased.]

“All done!”

“Great job. This is convenient.”

Before Pepper arrived, Hiro had to struggle to fetch water from the well to irrigate the field. Thanks to Pepper, it became much easier.

‘It really is faster working together rather than alone.’

“Shall we roast some sweet potatoes now?”

“Kyuu?”

“Pepper, can you gather some twigs?”

“Sure!”

At Hiro’s request, Pepper ran off and started collecting fallen twigs nearby. Hiro did the same, gathering scattered leaves into one spot.

“Alright… let’s give this a try.”

“Kyuu!”

Hiro ignited the lighter.

Whooosh!!!

“Whoa!”

“Kyuuak!?”

Hiro and Pepper were startled. The lighter created a massive pillar of fire that shot up into the sky—an incredible flame! True to its name, the “Ancient Lighter” had firepower beyond imagination.

“Darn! This thing isn’t for lighting fires but for incinerating everything! What the…?”

Hiro hurriedly put out the fire and examined the lighter, then frowned.

“If you’re going to give me something, at least set the firepower properly. Why max it out?”

“Kyuu!”

Hiro reduced the flame intensity and tried again.

Whoosh.

This time, the fire was just right for lighting.

Hiro ignited some leaves and pushed them between the gathered twigs.

Crackle!

The fire quickly spread to the twigs, growing larger in an instant.

“Pepper, let’s put them in now.”

“Okay!”

The two of them carefully pushed four sweet potatoes into the fire, enough to eat.

It would have been nice to have foil, but there was none available here.

Crackle… snap…

Hiro and Pepper quietly waited for the sweet potatoes to cook.

The soft sound of the twigs burning echoed around them, and Hiro absentmindedly watched the fire.

It wasn’t too hot from a comfortable distance.

‘Waiting like this isn’t so bad.’

As he gazed into the fire, he felt his stray thoughts melt away.

The fire burned brightly, as if fueled by Hiro’s worries and anxieties.

His mind felt at ease.

‘No wonder people like to zone out while watching a campfire.’

“Fire-watching is the best.”

“Fire-watching?”

“It’s called fire-watching—just zoning out while looking at the fire, like this…”

As Hiro relaxed while staring at the fire, Pepper, who had been observing him closely, nodded in understanding.

“Kyuuu…”

Pepper, too, followed Hiro’s lead, quietly gazing at the fire in a daze.

But soon, perhaps feeling bored, Pepper started licking Hiro’s palm.

It seemed that fire-watching didn’t hold much meaning for a spirit.

“Well, I think they’re ready now.”

Hiro carefully pulled out the sweet potatoes with a shovel.

‘They’re a bit burnt.’

The skin was slightly charred, but it wasn’t a big issue.

“Let’s see… ouch!”

“Kyuu!?”

“It’s fine. It’s just a bit hot. Whew… whew…”

Hiro blew on the sweet potato to cool it as much as possible, then carefully peeled it with his fingertips.

“Oh! It looks well-cooked.”

“Kyuu!”

The sweet potatoes turned out better than expected.

The yellow flesh peeked out shyly, releasing a sweet aroma.

“Mmm… sweet.”

The sweet scent filled the air, making Hiro’s mouth water.

“Looks delicious, right?”

“Kyuu!”

“Well then…”

Hiro took a big bite of the roasted sweet potato.

“Mmm! This is delicious!”

The sweet potato melted softly and sweetly in his mouth.

The warm texture filled his mouth with sweetness.

It was a bit hot, but not unbearable.

Chomp chomp!

The exterior was a little crispy, while the inside was moist.

The sweet potato’s flavor spread, bringing an indescribable sense of satisfaction.

“This is good.”

It was sweeter and more savory than any sweet potato Hiro had eaten in the real world.

Ding!

“There are options added?”

The fire resistance means gaining resistance to fire-related damage.

“Kyuu!!”

“Hm? Oh, you can eat too.”

With Hiro’s permission, Pepper finally started munching on the sweet potato eagerly.

“It’s so delicious, kyuu!”

“Right? Eat slowly, it’s hot.”

“Kyuu!!”

The sweet potatoes were so tasty that Pepper wagged its tail wildly while gobbling them down.

“Master! This is the best thing I’ve ever tasted! I love it so much, kyuu!!!”

“Oh dear…”

“Kyuu?”

“How can you eat like that with your face all dirty?”

Pepper’s mouth was smeared with sweet potato and soot.

Hiro, having no choice, grabbed some sweet potato vines, wiped Pepper’s face, and then used the Watering Skill to collect water and wash it.

“Kyuuang!”

“Now you’re clean.”

Hiro and Pepper continued to eat the remaining roasted sweet potatoes until they were full.

‘The taste is good, and the options are decent.’

While chewing on the roasted sweet potatoes, Hiro organized his thoughts.

Hiro’s goal was to create his own farm, sell the produce, and succeed.

The ground sweet potatoes seemed perfect for selling.

However, there was a problem.

“But how am I going to sell these?”

Hiro opened the auction house.

Ding!

[You cannot access the auction house.]

[To use the auction house, you must reach Level 20.]

He was under-leveled.

Moreover…

“You need an Auction House Access Pass…”

Even reaching Level 20 wasn’t enough; he needed the pass to access the auction house.

If this were Plants Village, it would be a simple matter to resolve.

But this was the Spirit Realm.

Could he even obtain an Auction House Access Pass here?

“Hmm… I’ll have to think about this after reaching Level 20.”

“Kyuu… Master… I’m so full, kyuu…”

“Me too.”

The sweet potatoes Hiro had grown were as thick as an arm, so eating just two was enough to be full.

Pepper’s belly was bloated.

Yawn…

“Kyuaaaang…”

A little time passed.

The two yawned simultaneously.

They had eaten well and were now full.

Plus, the fire hadn’t gone out yet, creating a warm, cozy atmosphere.

“Ugh…”

His eyes were closing.

His eyelids felt as heavy as hundreds of kilograms.

Hiro tried to resist the drowsiness.

“Kyuuang… kyuuang…”

Next to him, Pepper was already asleep.

Someone once said that even the strongest person couldn’t lift drooping eyelids.

“Ugh…”

Resistance was futile.

Hiro gave up, lay down, and closed his eyes.

“Damn… food coma…”

That day, Hiro fell into a deep sleep after enjoying the delicious sweet potatoes.

***

A few days later…

Hiro spent a leisurely time, scouting the surroundings.

‘I need to understand what’s around here.’

He had no information about the Spirit Realm.

Staying unguarded in such a place could lead to unforeseen events.

Knowing something was essential for preparing a response.

“Pepper, do you know anything about this forest?”

“Kyuu… I’m not sure, kyuu. It’s different from where I lived, kyuu.”

“Hm…”

Pepper was a low-tier spirit.

Thus, it had rarely ventured far from its home, so it didn’t know much about other areas.

‘At least there don’t seem to be any monsters near the temple…’

While walking, Hiro marked trees with his shovel.

It was a sign that he had checked this area.

“Guess that’s good news? It means this area is safe.”

The Spirit Realm was uncharted territory.

That meant there was no information, and the monsters’ levels were unknown.

Hiro’s level was only 4.

If a strong monster appeared, he would have no chance and die, so he had to be cautious.

‘Dying would be a waste.’

“Kyuu! Master! Kyuu!”

“Hm? What’s up?”

“Look at this, kyuu!”

At that moment…

Pepper smelled something.

“What is it?”

“Over there, kyuu!”

Pepper pointed to a hole in the middle of a nearby tree.

“There’s a strange smell coming from there!”

“A strange smell? What is it?”

“Hold on!”

Pepper quickly climbed the tree, kicked something inside the hole, and knocked it down.

It was…

“A seed?”

It was a seed.

Ding!

[You have discovered a hidden seed in the forest.]

[The seed was hidden by a squirrel a long time ago.]

[Squirrels living in the forest have a habit of hiding various seeds in different places.]

[You have obtained a tomato seed.]

[Luck +5]

[You have acquired the title ‘Finder’s Keepers!’]

[Finder’s Keepers!]

“So… this means…”

Hiro muttered to himself as he looked at the seed on the ground.

“It’s a squirrel’s hidden seed?”

That day, for the first time since starting the Overlord, Hiro raided a squirrel’s stash.

Survival 157

Prev I TOC I Next

Just as I entered the newly assigned room close to Luciana after the banquet, I heard a sudden voice from behind.

“The Duke wants to see you?”

“…What? Me, not Ms. Freesia?”

“Freesia…? Ah, you must be referring to that elf the young master mentioned. He did not request her presence.”

Luke, what kind of report did you give?

Holding my throbbing head, I let out a sigh.

Was it a miscalculation?

Or had I expected too much from Luke?

‘Why is he calling for me?’

I thought Freesia would bear all the hardships to bear the fruit of the World Tree.

I was mistaken.

I never expected he would summon me.

‘I really don’t want to meet that cunning Duke.’

“My stomach is starting to hurt. As you know, I am merely the child of a baron, so I feel too insignificant to face the Duke directly.”

Despite my polite refusal, the attendant stood silently, unmoving.

“…Excuse me?”

Even when I gestured for him to leave, he didn’t respond.

It was as if he wouldn’t leave unless I explicitly agreed.

“Sigh. You’re really persistent.”

“He wishes to discuss the treatment of the elf you brought. Please make a wise decision.”

Hmph. Dragging Freesia into this.

I had gone through the trouble of taking her from her parents, and now I couldn’t let such a valuable asset go to waste.

Hiding my reluctance, I stepped out of the room.

“…Lead the way.”

“Yes. Please follow me.”

The ruler of the West and the richest man in the Manhett Empire.

A meeting with the Golden Duke.

Glaring at the back of the attendant’s head as I followed.

I recalled the Golden Duke from the original story.

Even upon reconsidering,

‘I have a feeling I’m going to hear something troublesome.’

***

The room I was led to by the attendant.

Being at the very end of the hallway, the door itself was extravagantly decorated.

‘Even the king of the western natives had a solid gold door that surprised me, but this takes it a step further.’

Ebony, marble, thin layers of gold, various gemstones…

My keen eye for luxury sharply discerned the materials used in this door.

In terms of sheer opulence, it might be less than solid gold.

But in terms of artistic design and balance, the value of this door was much higher.

It was overwhelming.

And beyond that door,

The man who owned everything, including this door, spoke.

“So you are the promising talent Luke mentioned.”

A chair crafted from carved ivory, intricately decorated with various gemstones.

It was the pinnacle of opulence.

The man who had summoned me was seated there.

The first thing that caught my eye was his golden hair, as if to prove he had passed those genes to his son.

The ruler of the South and the guardian of the World Tree.

It was Duke Daimon.

‘This is the second time I’m facing a duke.’

But the atmosphere was quite different from when I met Duke Speda.

‘Is he really middle-aged?’

The most significant disparity was his appearance.

Even though Duke Speda looked somewhat young, he still had a dignified presence.

As for Duke Daimon, how should I put it?

With a bit of exaggeration, he could easily pass for Luke’s older brother.

“Are you very surprised?”

“…No. While youth generally fades with time, those who are chosen can even escape this fate. In that sense, it is right to say that the Golden Duke has preserved it excellently.”

I know where that ‘youth’ comes from, having confirmed it in the original story.

A diet of only the finest ingredients.

Skin and health care using magic.

Expensive eastern herbs that he drinks like water.

It’s truly because he is a duke.

And not just any duke, but the duke of the wealthiest southern region of the empire, making such extravagance possible.

“Hoho, thank you for noticing.”

‘I meant it as a slight jab.’

No matter how great a noble’s beauty is, it won’t help in a fight.

While he was obsessed with this, countless people in the empire starved to death.

Whether he didn’t catch this or simply liked the compliment, the Golden Duke lifted his chin from the armrest and looked directly at me.

“Actually, the reason I called you is that I have something to discuss.”

“…Me, you say?”

Hiding my momentary grimace, I had to put on a calm mask.

Unfortunately, my prediction was correct.

‘Why is this old man giving me troublesome tasks….’

I’m not a member of the Daimon Ducal House.

I’m not even in the same faction.

I’m not even the elf that could bring him wealth.

The reason I mentioned having a way for Freesia was because I needed to stay close to Luciana, making the South too far for me.

So I intended to give him a favor and have him negotiate with her or other elves.

But what could he possibly want to discuss with me?

“Are you not inclined?”

“No. The information you have to share, Duke, is undoubtedly more valuable than gold. I’m very much looking forward to it.”

However, I couldn’t ignore the conversation offered by the Duke.

I thought I’d give him a vague response until he said this.

“From what I hear, elves can generate infinite wealth. So, our house plans to actively support slave hunting at a family level this time.”

His eyes, resembling gold coins, glinted eerily as he weighed profits and losses.

***

“Father, I have something to say.”

“In your capacity as a child or as an executive of the trading company?”

The golden hair across from him flinched at his words.

The intent behind the Golden Duke’s words was clear.

As a merchant, one must prove oneself solely by earnings. Although he was the eldest son and had shown many achievements, securing his position as the heir,

One never knows.

Other siblings with business talent might appear someday.

“Of course, as an executive of the trading company.”

And his brilliant eldest son knew his role well as the heir to the ducal house.

To widen the gap so that no latecomers could catch up.

A faint expectation appeared on the Golden Duke’s lips.

“Very well. Speak.”

“It’s about the fruit of the World Tree.”

What Luke conveyed next contained information that would indeed bring a new wave to the South.

“…Elves can produce the fruit of the World Tree?”

“Yes. Although it’s not yet verified, the one who discovered it even brought an elf. It should be confirmed shortly.”

The Golden Duke, deep in thought, tapped his fingers on the armrest of his throne.

The fruit of the World Tree.

Recently, it hadn’t even been forming properly due to the tricks of the beastmen, causing contamination.

And now, it could be obtained with the help of the elves.

After a brief moment of contemplation,

The Golden Duke’s answer was simple.

“Well now. If the High Meister of the Dwarves heard this, he wouldn’t be able to contain his joy and would probably jump up on the spot.”

Of course, he wasn’t much different.

The fruit of the World Tree is a source of magic power infused by nature itself.

It would greatly contribute to making the elixir that maintains his youth, so how could he not welcome it?

Hiding none of his satisfaction, the Golden Duke asked his eldest son,

“Luke, if the fruit of the World Tree proves to be real, what would you do?”

“Of course, we should increase the budget for supporting slave hunting.”

So far, slave hunting had been quietly carried out under the pretext of subjugating beastmen.

Luke suggested bringing it out into the open.

“If we use elf slaves as labor, our house will prosper even more. Additionally, we can weaken both the beastmen and elves who are targeting the World Tree.”

It wasn’t an ingenious strategy, but it was a good one.

There’s no more reliable way to secure labor than using slaves.

But,

Is that really the best course of action?

“Summon him.”

“Yes, with the banquet coming to an end, I will immediately send an attendant to fetch the elf.”

“No, not that one.”

“Who then?”

Luke tilted his head in confusion.

Seeing his son struggling to understand his intentions for the first time in a long while, the Golden Duke smiled gently.

“Don’t you think the one who provided you with that information might have a different opinion?”

“…Indeed. Byron seemed quite close to that elf.”

More than just close.

Given the circumstances, it was likely that the elf was the one who informed them about the fruit of the World Tree.

“So, I hear you think elves can generate infinite wealth. Therefore, we plan to actively support slave hunting at a family level this time.”

Therefore,

He posed the same question to the young man before him as he had to Luke.

“What are your thoughts on this matter?”

It was clear to see the young man’s half-closed eyes hidden beneath his black hair twist.

‘Poor young man.’

Seeing this, the experienced noble,

The Golden Duke, had a subtle smile on his lips.

It seemed he had proposed it to Luke for the sake of harmony between elves and humans.

But the Daimon family are merchants before they are nobles.

“If you have no further comments, I will take that as agreement.”

So why had he spoken so hastily?

Paying a fair price to acquire wealth isn’t the only way.

I always think northern people have quite a naive side.

Watching the young man’s lips twist,

The Golden Duke gestured for him to step back.

He’d do well to consider it a cheap lesson.

The dukes of the empire, including himself, were all just folks looking out for their own gain.

“…Please wait a moment.”

Indeed, stepping back like this would be too unfair to that elf.

It was quite an impolite thing for a lower noble without even a title to say, but the Golden Duke willingly gave him a chance.

“Oh, really? Do you have a different opinion?”

The one who had handed them such precious information.

He could at least listen to one word.

‘Let’s see how he responds.’

Will he try to appeal to emotions, claiming even elves feel pain and emotions?

Or will he express childish anger about his situation?

“I oppose this for three reasons.”

However, he should say that his expectations were pleasantly off the mark.

Despite being before the duke, where he might feel intimidated, the young man stood straight, smoothing his tense expression.

“Three reasons? That’s interesting. Let’s hear them.”

“First, there is the issue of the loss of honor by bringing something from the shadows into the light.”

Actively encouraging slave hunting openly by the ducal house.

It was only right that they would be criticized for forgetting their principles out of greed.

…Is that what he intends to say?

“What does that matter? We are merchants. It’s the highest praise.”

A sneer formed on the Golden Duke’s lips.

It had been that way since the roots of their ancestors.

The title of duke was earned through their achievements with the World Tree.

They were merchants before they were nobles.

In that sense, talking about honor seemed like nothing more than jealousy over their wealth.

“No. Then it becomes an issue with the second reason. Seeking small gains at the expense of greater ones.”

“…Oh? Is that so?”

Was this groundwork for that argument?

His interest grew even more.

Greater gains.

Indeed, what could be more beneficial than bringing in elf slaves and obtaining the fruit of the World Tree?

“Speak.”

“The issue with the South is that you cannot fully utilize that vast and valuable land.”

…Indeed, it was a treasure trove of resources, including the World Tree.

But few places, including the Daimon estate, made full use of it.

The unexpected angle in his argument caused the Golden Duke’s brow to furrow slightly before relaxing.

“Because of the jungle wilderness and the enemies, beastmen and elves.”

“Hmm. You seem to know our South quite well.”

“Haha, I studied before coming for the field class. Anyway.”

He had heard he was from the West but worked in the North.

Seeing his interest in the South, which he governed, was quite gratifying.

‘And the boldness to speak of such shortcomings before me.’

Could Luke do this?

It seemed he was not ignorant of the Duke, yet his fearless attitude piqued more curiosity.

“Ahem.”

While the Duke was momentarily impressed,

The young man cleared his throat to steady his voice and continued.

“This is where friendly exchanges with elves would be beneficial.”

‘…Huh?’

Friendly exchanges with ‘elves.’

Was that even possible?

Not a child reading a fairy tale, nor was he ignorant of the South.

Yet his audacious suggestion made the Golden Duke stare at him intently.

“Hm. Could it be, I’m right in my assumption?”

“If you guessed that I mean to use elves for jungle development, you’re correct.”

He squinted, then opened his eyes fully and smiled.

“For elves, the World Tree is a sacred object.”

“By granting some of them access to the World Tree, we gain its fruit in return.”

“This would be the first deal. The first opening of that closed-off race.”

Moreover,

The Golden Duke easily inferred what the young man had left unsaid.

-As long as the trade continues, they will inevitably come to understand each other thoroughly.

So-called, cultural assimilation.

Human power is already formidable.

They have conquered the World Tree over the course of decades, if not centuries, and enslaved elves and beastmen.

While the occasional attempts to reclaim it might be a bit annoying, they are nothing more than a trifling matter underfoot.

To the Golden Duke, it was a trivial issue.

But what if the elves were given limited access to the World Tree, which they so desire…?

If this continued long-term, there would likely be far more elves preferring to coexist comfortably with humans than those insisting on reclaiming the World Tree.

Going further, they might even begin to cultivate the jungle, their home, emulating human life.

“Hoho.”

“From my perspective, the clear dishonor and the potential to harm future relations with both species make slave hunting unappealing. Besides, can we guarantee that those brought in will work properly?”

A merchant should play in the big leagues.

Simply pioneering the new realm of the jungle would undoubtedly bring immense profit.

Furthermore,

‘From the way he speaks, it seems he has a means to win over the elves as well.’

“And the third reason?”

“You would be making an enemy of Hans Byron. Can you handle that?”

“What? Hahaha!”

The Golden Duke burst into laughter on the spot.

Such an arrogant and audacious statement.

It was truly laughable, yet not irritating.

A baron’s son challenging a duke?

The sheer absurdity made it all the more amusing.

Yet he knew,

This young man was serious.

“I’ve received a precious lesson from my young friend.”

“I’m glad it was helpful.”

“To speak bluntly, I like you. Would you consider becoming my personal attendant?”

A greedy smile spread across the Golden Duke’s lips.

He desired him.

Whether as a merchant or a duke,

The urge to snatch up talent was an instinct of those who ruled.

The young man was an unpolished gem.

No, even that was an understatement.

He was more accurately a diamond yet to be discovered by the world.

Therefore,

He must have him.

He is the Golden Duke,

The wealthiest man on the continent and a power broker in the shadows.

“I can guarantee better treatment than what you receive in the North. Don’t you want to hold on to this ‘youth’?”

He extended his hand to the young man.

With the confidence that he would not be refused.

“You, really are a masterpiece, aren’t you?”

The prince, who had been laughing heartily for a while from across the room, wiped away the tears welling up in his eyes as he made this remark.

“Noel, you’ve truly brought a bizarre individual with you. Even I didn’t see this coming.”

“?”

“..?”

Honestly, it felt like a half-hearted provocation, but wasn’t his reaction a little too mild? Just as he was about to open his mouth, thinking maybe he had more to suggest—

As if he had read his mind, the prince spoke up, beating him to the punch.

“You’ve said enough. I don’t plan on suggesting anything more. Wouldn’t it be fine to leave things as they are?”

“?”

“..?”

The bluntness of his words, indicating surrender, made Aiden narrow his eyes further.

“Isn’t it? If they’re staying close because they like each other, it’s a bit forced to try and separate them.”

“However.”

The prince smiled subtly as he continued.

“The ‘danger’ that comes with that, I’ll assume you’ll handle on your own.”

His voice was calm, polite as usual, but—

“Let’s meet again, Aiden.”

As the prince stood to leave, there was something chilling embedded in his words, a coldness that could freeze your spine.

“We’ll surely meet again.”

It was a sentiment that even Aiden found himself agreeing with deeply.

“Aiden.”

“Yes?”

“There seems to be something wrong with Lady Noel. Do you know anything about it?”

The moment he returned to the banquet hall, Stella asked this question, causing Aiden’s eyes to shift nervously.

“Something wrong, you say… in what way?”

“She looked like her soul had been sucked out of her, as if she couldn’t regain her senses, and then she suddenly left, saying she felt unwell and returned to the military headquarters. She never acted that way at an official event before…”

“……”

“Judging by her unusually flushed face, it doesn’t seem like a lie, but… she’s not one to fall ill so suddenly.”

‘So that’s why I haven’t seen him around for a while.’

At Stella’s worried tone, Aiden nodded slightly, his expression complex.

He had a guess.

-System Message-

▶ Noel Astria Simus’ favorability has increased.

▶ The increase in favorability is significantly high!

▶ Bond level has skyrocketed from 3 to 5. Two additional skill copy attempts have been added!

▶ The accumulated bond is now high enough. The application of ‘Weaver of Fate’ will soon change!

Main quest details will soon be updated!

A new entry has been added to the quest ‘Sham Marriage’!

Yes, that’s right.

“Well… I’m not really sure.”

For now, this was all he could say.

Frankly, if Noel had overheard the conversation he had just had, the rise in favorability made sense.

He had strongly taken Noel’s side against the prince, and at the end…

‘I feel like dying of embarrassment.’

Thinking back on the words he had practically blurted out in what felt like a public confession, his face flushed with heat.

He’d have to think of a way to smooth things over with Noel later. A real misunderstanding would be problematic.

Although, in retrospect, it might not be too much of an issue.

After all, he had gained two skill copy opportunities.

‘If it’s a gain, it’s a gain.’

This time, though, it felt uncomfortable because it hadn’t been intentional. The deepening of his relationship with Noel was becoming noteworthy, and—

‘It’s dangerous.’

He was aware of his contradictory state. In his current situation, he needed to collect as many skills as possible to survive, and Noel was too powerful to leave out of that list.

Setting her abilities aside, just maintaining the marriage with her was a vital pillar for his survival. No matter how you looked at it, his relationship and favorability with her were essential.

But, on the flip side—

Because of that, if he were to become genuinely close with Noel on a personal level, that would be a headache in itself.

Not because he disliked Noel or found her unimportant, but quite the opposite—it was because she was too important.

‘I need to be cautious with all the main characters.’

His priorities remained the same as before. Ultimately, he needed to raise their favorability. However—

In a situation where the protagonist is absent, Aiden is bound to face these individuals until the main scenario concludes. If he were to grow genuinely close to them and make even the slightest misstep, the consequences would be severe. As the saying goes, the higher you rise, the harder you fall. Once a close relationship is deeply fractured, it becomes almost impossible to repair.

Furthermore, the closer people are, the more often they end up hurting each other—this is a common truth in life. Aiden, at least, was aware that anyone could fall into such a situation. Therefore, approaching all of them required caution and delicacy.

Still, that’s a worry for later. For now, there are more pressing matters to deal with.

<Weaver of Fate>

+Arden Brimstone Lionel

– Malevolence: Stage 1

– One skill can be imitated.

※ This target cannot form a ‘bond.’

The skill’s effect differs from the original!

Although the skill copy ability just extracted from the prince was obtained, the mechanism felt different from the ones Aiden had used up until now.

The term “imitation” rather than “copy” stood out, and upon opening the skill window and examining the internal effects, this impression was magnified.

‘The performance is severely nerfed.’

Compared to the original skills possessed by the prince, all of them had subpar performance. Whether it was power or the range of applicability, everything was weakened, and some skills were marked in red, indicating they couldn’t be imitated at all.

However, one notable detail stood out:

-The target’s “Malevolence” level is low.

Currently, only “imitation” is possible.

▶ Raise the Malevolence level to unlock additional functions such as “Rebound,” “Overload,” and “Seal”!

Compared to skills copied through favorability, this one had a lot of extra utility features. Though the original power couldn’t be fully utilized, Aiden had the sense that he could exercise some form of “influence” over the skill itself.

The exact details would only become clear once the Malevolence level was raised.

‘More importantly, the condition is called ‘Malevolence’…?’

The more this person dislikes Aiden, the more skills he can acquire from them?

‘No matter how you look at it, that activation condition is a mess.’

He has to deliberately earn someone’s malice? Aiden let out a deep sigh as he rose from his seat.

“Are you leaving?”

“Yes. I’ve met everyone I needed to.”

He said this, but the truth was that he was about to meet the most troublesome person now.

***

After walking a bit outside the banquet hall, Aiden spotted a knight in full armor sitting by a fountain, propping her chin up as if drowsy. As soon as he saw her, Katia kicked her legs and immediately voiced her complaint.

“Boooring.”

“……”

“What’s this? There’s nothing fun happening. Isn’t there some big incident going on?”

What big incident are you talking about?

“Why? I don’t care what it is, as long as I get to cause trouble.”

“Can’t I just punch someone, burn something down, or kill someone?”

The person saying this is the same one who insisted on becoming his Lieutenant, claiming she wouldn’t embarrass herself at official events.

“Weren’t you the one who insisted on becoming a Lieutenant? You should fulfill your duties.”

“That was only so we could spend more time together, remember? I became your Lieutenant so I could stick by your side.”

Katia, as always, was nonchalant about saying things that made others uncomfortable. Aiden pressed his temples as a headache set in.

“Well, shall we go do something fun? We’re done with the banquet anyway.”

“Really? What are we going to do?”

Aiden glanced around at the banquet hall building nearby. The event was taking place in the imperial palace, a vast structure filled with history and secrets. One of those hidden places was his current target.

But the task at hand… well, how to put it?

Scratching his chin, Aiden tried to think of a more palatable way to describe what he was about to do. In the end, realizing it was all the same no matter how he phrased it, he simply spoke the truth.

“Grave robbing.”

“Oh.”

“The Hall of Honor?”

At Aiden’s request, Katia, who had “infiltrated” the location with him, uttered those words. She seemed fully aware of where they were.

“It’s an actual grave, huh? Not metaphorically, but literally?”

The custom of honoring great figures exists everywhere, and the Empire is no exception. The Hall of Honor is the place where items related to famous figures and their achievements are kept.

Technically, it could be considered a museum, but Katia wasn’t wrong in calling it a grave. After all, they even preserved the remains of the great figures whenever possible.

Katia, seemingly intrigued by the place, looked around with curiosity. Meanwhile, Aiden, who was quietly following her from behind, couldn’t help but feel a chill.

“She really is a monster…”

As expected, anywhere in the imperial palace is equipped with top-tier security. Yet, watching Katia casually leap around and break through all these barriers without a second thought, with Aiden in tow, it was hard to tell if she was a member of royalty or a highly trained infiltrator. It seemed as though she had more than a few hidden talents.

“…Princess, you didn’t really fight seriously when you went up against Lady Noel, did you?”

“Hm? That wasn’t even a real fight in the first place.”

Aiden was once again struck by the realization of what kind of monster he had as a Lieutenant. Shaking his head, he stepped into the Hall of Honor.

“But when you say ‘grave robbing,’ you mean we’re here to steal something, right? What are we taking? Weapons? Secret techniques? Armor? Whatever it is, it’s bound to be a top-class item, right?”

Her question came with a sense of excitement, as if she were thrilled to be doing something reckless. Her eyes even seemed to sparkle.

And, whether by luck or fate, Aiden had a response ready that wouldn’t disappoint her.

“…The person themselves.”

“What?”

Katia tilted her head in confusion, but instead of explaining further, Aiden continued walking. As mentioned before, this space housed preserved remains. And Aiden now stood before one of the better-preserved remains.

A spirit clings to the body, and the better the condition of the body, the higher the chance of success for what Aiden was about to attempt.

“…The Knight of Dawn?”

Katia read the name of the preserved body Aiden stood in front of.

“You know of them? He’s an imperial hero.”

“Wouldn’t it be stranger if I didn’t know? ‘The First Knight’ is still a favorite subject among artists, you know?”

The hero of the Empire, who had achieved countless military exploits and built a legendary legacy. He was the conqueror of the nameless valley, the one who toppled the Tower of the Sky, the champion capable of taking on a thousand enemies alone. The first and strongest knight, and the most loyal servant of the goddess Karva. He was also the first to discover the use of inner energy and martial arts. Apart from Noel, no one else had been able to master such a pure form of energy.

“Even in the Holy Kingdom, the Knight of Dawn is highly respected. I doubt there’s anyone on the continent who dislikes him.”

Aiden responded nonchalantly, scratching his ear.

“I need to correct one thing, though.”

Aiden spoke calmly.

“He’s not that great of a person.”

Katia’s expression shifted to one of disbelief—an expression Aiden rarely saw on her. She clearly hadn’t expected a citizen of the Empire to belittle one of their own heroes.

“…Huh? Really? But isn’t he still regarded as a hero of the Empire?”

“People glorify the past. In reality, he wasn’t all that impressive. My personal suspicion is that some of his accomplishments might’ve been fabricated.”

Katia gave him a puzzled look but didn’t ask for an explanation. Instead, Aiden silently activated a skill interface. He had spoken enough that it was about time for a “reaction.”

<Weaver of Fate>

{Rania Ashan}

Bond: Stage 1

– One skill can be copied.

The skill he intended to use was the one he had copied from Rania earlier. He replicated one of the skills he had his eye on.

[Copying the skill ‘Spiritual Sensitivity’!]

-Copied Skill-

<Spiritual Sensitivity>

Those who are touched by divinity can see, speak, and interact with beings unseen by others. Your senses will open to detect spiritual entities.

As soon as he copied the skill, faint “presences” began to appear in his peripheral vision. The air around the Knight of Dawn’s remains subtly shifted, as if smoke were rising from the preserved body—something that likely only Aiden could see.

Just as he suspected, the spirit was still lingering. The remains were well-preserved, and a soul as powerful as his wouldn’t fade so easily.

Necromancy isn’t something that comes easily. Meeting face-to-face with the dead is an act that defies natural order. Normally, it would require the help of a powerful shaman from the Far East, but under certain conditions, even someone like Aiden, who had no special talent, could manage it.

For example, if a person strong enough to defy common sense hears something so outrageous they can’t rest even in death, their soul might return temporarily.

The Knight of Dawn was such a case.

This man had indeed achieved feats that were blindingly dazzling. But his personality…

“…He’s petty.”

Aiden smirked as he continued.

“If you’ve got a problem with what I said, why don’t you come out and refute it?”

As soon as those words left his mouth, the smoke-like presence around the preserved remains began to stir violently, and then, tangible effects began to manifest in the surrounding area.

“What’s happening?”

Even Katia was startled as the wind picked up, objects around them began to tremble, and her skin prickled with electricity. It was unbelievable—the sheer “presence” was causing these phenomena to occur.

This indirectly showed just how powerful the spirit inside was.

This, ladies and gentlemen, was the so-called “world’s strongest petty man.”

Despite his overwhelming power, he could never tolerate being insulted, even in death.

In other words, Aiden’s words had gotten under his skin to the point that the Knight of Dawn’s spirit couldn’t remain dormant.

[What did you say, you little…!]

There it was.

As the enraged spirit began to emerge from the remains, Aiden couldn’t help but let out a small, amused sigh.

Round 159

After that, Director Jeon Young-joo continued to offer various types of personal benefits, such as tax reductions, transaction fee discounts on awakened goods, and other privileges, emphasizing that all these benefits would be provided for free for life as long as I didn’t leave for an overseas guild.

“Can I really receive those benefits?”

“It’s an open secret, but some of the awakened individuals are already receiving these benefits. Of course, some might say it’s unfair.”

Jeon Young-joo nodded as if to show she understood my concern.

“But if we do nothing and our valuable awakened individuals are taken by other countries? We concluded that it’s better to give them special treatment even if we get criticized.”

Listening to her, certain awakened individuals suddenly came to mind.

People who had given up their Korean nationality and naturalized in other countries. They were once renowned figures in our country.

Those stories are about ten years old now, so they aren’t talked about much anymore, but they once caused a huge social stir.

‘Unlike celebrities or sports stars, awakened individuals are resource harvesters, so if they go abroad, it’s like a loss of national power.’

But am I really that important?

Anyway, it felt good to know they thought highly of me.

“If you are ever interested, please feel free to contact the Awakeners Headquarters.”

“Yes, I’ll think about it.”

In the end, these were benefits that I could only receive by making a separate agreement to stay with a domestic guild, so it wasn’t something I needed to decide immediately.

Of course, I had no plans to go abroad. How would an overseas guild even know about me and recruit me?

‘At least there’s the Skyscraper Guild and Junichi…

Now that I think about it, those two might be interested in me. And the Awakeners Headquarters probably has an inkling of this.

Anyway, after finishing the grand meal of Lee family’s home-cooked meal, the group returned together. After seeing them off, I stayed at home to clean up when suddenly, Seon-ah asked me something.

“Brother, can I mention the name of the drama Ara is appearing in?”

“To whom?”

“On YouTube.”

I shrugged.

Shouldn’t it be okay to mention it?

“I’ll ask first, but I don’t think it’ll matter. It’s a highly anticipated project anyway…”

Since it’s such an anticipated work, a lot of information was already out there. There shouldn’t be any issues if a piece of information about Ara’s appearance is revealed.

Moreover, Ara was just playing a minor role appearing only once in numerous scenes.

“More importantly, Mom.”

“Hmm?”

“I think the soybean paste is almost ready.”

“Oh, really?”

My mother, who was wiping the table, looked back at me with a face full of anticipation.

“Wow, I’m really curious. We made charcoal because of that, right?”

“Yes.”

Seeing Seon-ah’s excitement, it was clear that the Korean spirit ran in her veins.

Koreans thrive on food power!

Come to think of it, I should buy more rice seedlings now that I’m out. The last rice farming attempt was a complete failure…

‘Now Mark 2’s farming level is 5. We’re not the same as before.’

The plan was falling into place perfectly.

“We’ll be heading out now.”

“Are you leaving already?”

Ara, who was watching TV, exclaimed as if regretful.

Perhaps she knew she would be appearing on TV soon; Ara had recently become much more interested.

“Then, do you want to stay here for a while, Ara? I think I need to go buy something.”

“Sure, we’ll take care of Ara.” Seon-ah nodded vigorously and waved her hand as if telling me to hurry up and leave.

In the end, I went alone to buy rice seedlings, and it took longer than expected, so it was already evening by the time I returned.

“Stay over for the night.”

My father, who had already returned from work, looked at me and Ara—or rather, just Ara—and said.

“She’s even wearing pajamas!”

“These aren’t pajamas; it’s the full armor of the King of Tigers.”

“What’s with that weird name?”

In the end, I decided to stay overnight.

“Like this, like this. Over here, do it like this!”

Seeing my family enjoying another little talent show after the orphanage event made me think I should come to sleep over more often.

Hmm, she’s even cuter dancing in that outfit. No! Our Ara is always cute!

“We’re back.”

When we returned to the dungeon, as usual, Woofy was the first to run up to us. Being a high-level monster, it seemed to have sharp senses that quickly noticed our arrival.

“Hehehe.”

“Kyu-seong, you’re laughing weirdly again.”

I took something out from Bokkeum and handed it directly to Woofy.

“Do you know what this is, Woofy?”

-Woof?

“I made this for you. It’s called a dog chew.”

-Aroo?

Woofy tilted its head and stuck out its tongue, and seeing this, I entrusted Ara with the translation.

“It’s food!”

-Woof!

Finally, Woofy eagerly took the dog chew from me and started chewing and gnawing at it.

“Oh oh, how is it, how is it?!”

I asked Woofy, but it was already engrossed in chewing the dog chew. It was impressive how it had settled down and clung to the chew.

In the end, we lay down in the field, each chewing on a dog chew. Leaning against Woofy’s warm body felt good.

“It’s so fluffy.”

Ara climbed onto Woofy’s back, rubbing her face against it. Despite this, Woofy was focused on the chew.

Watching this made me feel proud, and I was glad I made the dog chew. I should make them often.

We spent a leisurely time having a dog chew party for a while. Without making a sound, Purr had quietly approached and was nibbling on grass nearby.

“I’m happy.”

“I’m happy too!”

I wanted to stay like this forever, but I had things to do today. So, I forced my unwilling body to get up and started moving.

Trickle, trickle.

Ara, Woofy, and Purr followed me closely.

“Today, we’re planting rice.”

“Rice! Grains! Food!”

“Yes. We failed last time, but it should be okay this time.”

We have Mark 2!

Walking leisurely like a stroll, we soon arrived at the slime village. The children noticed me and came out to greet me.

“Have you been well?”

I hadn’t stayed out often, so even though it was just one day, it felt like a long time since I last saw them.

Then I saw a familiar figure in the distance. It was Mammon and Frey.

-Lord Overlord!

-Lord Overlord, have you returned!

Frey was running hard, but being so small, the distance between us didn’t narrow. In the end, I walked toward Frey and Mammon.

“Hi, kids, but what brings you here? You’re both here?”

-We have something to report!

“We do!”

A report? Ah, the village construction must be starting around now. My father and I made the village plans, and based on those plans, Kkumuris and the goblins began to build the village.

The groundwork must be well underway by now.

“Alright, go ahead and tell me.”

“The cowardly deer have swarmed in!”

“Huh?”

Cowardly deer? Pururuk?

The name that hadn’t come up in a while made me pause for a moment. But why suddenly?

“Pururuk?”

“Pururuk?”

“Ah, we call the cowardly deer Pururuk.”

“Pururuk! From now on, the cowardly deer are Pururuk!”

Frey shouted without any objection. Meanwhile, Mammon chimed in with a troubled expression.

“The Pururuk are causing a commotion between our village and their village.”

“Really? They’re not the type to do that…”

Something seems suspicious.

The scent of troubled Pururuk!

If those guys, who hadn’t been seen for a while, are causing a fuss there, something must be going on.

“We tried to talk to them, but they just run away, so we can’t do anything.”

“Hmm, we’ll go check it out.”

“Oh, as expected of the overlord!”

Mammon looked at me with eyes full of admiration.

I’m not planning to do anything special; I just thought Ara could communicate with them, so I’m going to check it out.

“Then let’s postpone the rice farming for now. Let’s check on Pururuk first.”

“Okay!”

Ara clenched her fists and nodded. How reassuring! Our Ara!

We rode on Purr’s back and headed off immediately.

The location was roughly near the mines. However, it wasn’t long before we encountered Pururuk.

– Huaaah!

Pururuk had transformed into the appearance of a majestic giant deer.

Frey and Mammon, who didn’t recognize it, panicked.

– Ahh!

– Oh no! Overlord, I will protect you!

As Mammon tried to use poison immediately, I quickly stopped him.

“It’s alright. That’s Pururuk.”

“Pururuk?!”

I wanted to keep Pururuk’s secret, but now it’s exposed. Anyway, as we slowed down, we dismounted from Purr and approached the giant deer.

“Pururuk!!”

Ara ran over, spreading her arms wide.

Then, the Pururuk herd, transformed into giant deer, slowly approached and bowed their heads, as if asking to be petted.

“Hehe, it’s been a while.”

With a bright smile, Ara petted Pururuk’s head.

Then, like dominoes falling, the giant deer collapsed and turned into small Pururuks.

“Whoa!”

“It’s Pururuk!”

Frey was shocked, and Mammon was thrilled.

Watching their cute reactions, I cautiously approached the Pururuk herd.

They certainly seemed more sensitive than when I saw them before. It seemed evident that something was wrong.

“Ara, could you ask Pururuk if anything happened to them?”

“Okay!”

Ara immediately began to communicate with Pururuk.

I wasn’t sure what was being said, but Ara kept nodding her head and muttering words.

After a brief exchange that seemed like a conversation, Ara came back with an answer.

“The Pururuk leader is sick.”

“The Pururuk leader? Oh!”

Come to think of it, the one with the small antlers, the only one among the Pururuks, wasn’t visible. The one who always led the group and was at the forefront in dealing with us.

The only brave one among the cowardly Pururuks was absent now.

“They’ve been looking for us.”

“For us?”

“Help! Help!”

Ara waved her arms widely and shouted.

The sight was both funny and cute, but it seemed she was conveying Pururuk’s message directly.

“Oh, so they’ve been causing a fuss around here to ask for help.”

“They were too scared to go outside.”

“That makes sense.”

They wanted to meet us and get help, but they were too afraid to leave the World Tree Forest, so they couldn’t do anything.

The Pururuk-like behavior made me feel both cute and pitiful.

“Fortunately, we discovered them, thanks to Frey and Mammon.”

“Heh!”

“We’re good at things like this!”

Frey and Mammon immediately boasted, raising their noses high at the compliment.

“Let’s tell Pururuk that we’ll help. Ask them to guide us to where the leader is.”

“Okay!”

Ara gestured and communicated with Pururuk, and the Pururuk herd wagged their short tails happily.

Their transparent emotions made me unconsciously reach out to pet a nearby Pururuk.

Soon, the Pururuk herd transformed into agile beasts and looked back at us, as if signaling us to follow.

“Wow.”

“Transformation!”

We rode Purr with Mammon and Frey and followed Pururuk, holding Ara in my arms.

I don’t know what the illness is, but I have the strawberry potion. If not, there’s also Mammon.

‘Wait for us, we’re coming!’
