The cold northern lands, a place where no living being should be able to survive, was gripped by an unrelenting, life-draining frost.

In this bleak, cursed land, painted eternally in shades of gray by the relentless blizzard, a man had fallen.

Where his right arm should have been, a crimson stain of blood marked the spot, and his left eye socket lay empty.

This man was none other than one of the eight barbarian chieftains, the great Khlkan, now awaiting death after his defeat at the hands of the cowardly knights of Caliban.

Yet even in his final moments, his eyes were filled with rage.

“Those dishonorable dogs…!” he cursed, but not because of his defeat.

To the barbarians, death in battle was a glorious end, a noble fate.

Khlkan’s fury stemmed from the dishonorable way he was struck down—caught in an ambush, tricked by the knight’s deceitful challenge to a duel.

“Cough!” Blood spilled from Khlkan’s mouth as his world grew dim.

The gray landscape blurred, and his ears gradually stopped hearing the bitter winds.

Despite his anger, his mind slowly began to sink into darkness.

Just as everything was about to fade into nothingness, Khlkan whispered the name of the great god, “Ulthultus…?”

At that very moment, time seemed to stop.

The dim, fading vision cleared; the harsh northern wind blew in his ears once again, and his mind, slipping into unconsciousness, began to rise.

[Child of blood,] a voice echoed.

[Call my name. Call upon the great name that you worshipped. Call upon my name, and I shall grant you what you desire.]

As if commanded by a divine force, Khlkan, entranced, murmured, “Ulthultus…”

And in that moment, the god smiled.

[Somehow, I Became the Hidden Mastermind of Asteria After Waking Up,] After hearing something that seemed to fit such a title, Alon closed his gaping mouth and mumbled to himself. However, the sweetness he had felt just moments before was completely gone.

“What kind of nonsense is this?”

A flurry of question marks swirled in Alon’s mind as he tried to comprehend the rumors he had just heard.

It made no sense to him.

If he had been associating closely with Duke Altia or Count Zenonia, both of whom were currently forming new factions, he might have understood the basis for such rumors.

However, the issue was that Alon had never once met either of the two nobles.

He had only seen Duke Altia once when she was still a young lady at a ball, and as for Lady Zenonia, he had encountered her but had never met the Count himself.

In other words, the rumor lacked plausibility, to the point of being entirely baseless.

Alon, who had been slowly moving his lips while deep in thought, soon concluded that the notion of him exchanging secret talks with other nobles was nothing more than an absurd, groundless rumor.

After all, suspicions could only arise if there was a pre-existing relationship. But since Alon had no connection whatsoever with those individuals, he didn’t even feel the need to entertain any doubt.

So, just as Alon reached for a cookie next to the egg tart, a voice called out.

“Count Palatio.”

“…?”

Alon turned his head toward the voice and looked beside him.

There stood a man dressed in expensive clothing, his face full of mockery.

‘Who is this guy?’

Alon briefly scanned the man.

With his long, curly hair draped to one side, it was easy to tell that the man’s character was twisted in a way that was different from the Palatio family, but Alon couldn’t gather any more information than that.

At the very least, Alon had no information on him in his mind.

“Oh, I haven’t introduced myself. I am Carmine, the third son of Duke Komalon of the Ashtalon Kingdom.”

As soon as he noticed Alon didn’t recognize him, Carmine’s expression briefly faltered before he introduced himself. Alon paused in confusion, then nodded in understanding.

After all, he had heard that foreign nobles occasionally visited the Grand Church where most of Asteria’s nobility gathered.

“Count Palatio,” Alon responded with a polite greeting.

“I’ve heard of you. You were fortunate enough to become a count, weren’t you?”

“…?”

Alon blinked in surprise at Carmine’s immediate mocking tone.

He had suspected from the start that this wasn’t a friendly encounter based on the man’s demeanor, but he hadn’t expected him to launch straight into open ridicule, as if he had no sense of tact or intelligence.

Just as Alon was processing this, another voice interrupted from a different direction.

“Excuse me, but what are you saying right now?”

Turning toward the new voice, Alon found a familiar face, unlike with Carmine.

‘…Marquis Mardinyo?’

Alon recognized him not by his face but by the emblem emblazoned on his chest, and the fact that he had the distinct appearance of a middle-aged man.

“Are you insulting a noble of the Asteria Kingdom right now?”

“…?”

Alon’s face showed bewilderment at this sudden and unexpected defense.

***

Carmine, the third son of Duke Komalon of the Ashtalon Kingdom, was not in a particularly good mood that day.

There were many reasons for his foul mood, but the biggest one was that the marriage proposal with the fifth daughter of Duke Lotegre, which he had worked hard to arrange, wasn’t going well.

Of course, the reason the proposal fell apart was purely due to Carmine’s childish behavior and antics that made him appear immature.

He had made the foolish mistake of evaluating the appearance of other noblewomen in front of the fifth daughter herself.

As expected of a spoiled child raised without discipline, instead of acknowledging his mistake, Carmine became even more displeased when the lady suggested reconsidering the proposal.

If this had not been the Kingdom of Asteria, a close ally, or if it hadn’t been Duke Lotegre, with whom numerous secret dealings were being conducted, Carmine would have already flipped the situation upside down.

Of course, on the flip side, Carmine had no idea that the only reason Duke Lotegre was turning a blind eye to his behavior was because of the very secretive relationship he had with Duke Komalon.

In any case, with his mood soured, Carmine had come to the ball, hoping to lift his spirits, when he spotted Count Palatio and decided to pick a fight.

There was only one reason he started the altercation—to vent his already foul mood.

Of course, there were plenty of servants and knights around him who could have been ignored or ridiculed, but Carmine didn’t find any pleasure in toying with them.

It wasn’t that his character was admirable, but rather that playing with toys he could easily destroy at will didn’t offer him any amusement.

For nobles like him, those not of noble birth were treated as no more than that. In that sense, Count Palatio was a perfect stress reliever for Carmine.

From what Carmine had heard, Count Palatio was just a clueless boy who had luckily become a count, with no close allies among the nobility.

Though even a rascal like him understood that this was not his own territory, he had carefully(?) thought through who he could safely target without any consequences.

And so, as soon as he saw Palatio, he initiated the confrontation.

***

“Do you realize how disrespectful it is to insult a noble of the Kingdom of Asteria?”

“That’s not what I—”

“The Kingdom of Ashtalon has been our ally for a long time, but that was based on mutual respect. Have the people of Ashtalon forgotten what respect means?”

“No, that’s not—”

“So, are you saying that Duke Komalon of Ashtalon views Asteria in such a light?”

“Absolutely not…!”

“Then why are you addressing a noble so disrespectfully without having even properly succeeded to your own title?”

“That—”

Carmine’s face twisted in confusion.

Contrary to the rumors he had heard, the moment he picked a fight with Count Palatio, the other nobles started to rally around him, chastising Carmine.

As his face grew more bewildered, Carmine turned his gaze toward Alon, hoping for support, but even Alon was staring at the situation in a state of confusion, his typical expressionless face now mixed with perplexity and bewilderment.

‘…What is this situation?’

Carmine then looked at the three nobles defending Alon.

One was Marquis Mardinyo, another was Duke Lotegre, and the last was Count Palan.

Alon easily recognized them, not only because of their crests but also because they were highly influential figures within Asteria.

Marquis Mardinyo was a prominent figure among the royalist faction.

Duke Lotegre, on the other hand, was a major figure within the aristocratic faction.

As for Count Palan, he maintained political neutrality, but that very position had allowed him to accumulate considerable power.

Even if Alon had no interest in politics or noble affairs, it was impossible for any noble in Asteria not to know who they were.

“Is Duke Komalon truly looking down on us?”

“T-That’s not the case.”

“Then why did you speak so disrespectfully to Count Palatio?”

“I-I’ve been… disrespectful.”

“Disrespect isn’t the issue here. The point is, why did you make such condescending remarks to Count Palatio?”

Watching the nobles closing in on Carmine with their well-practiced political maneuvering, Alon, who had never been involved in politics, suddenly recognized the situation.

‘I’m sorry.’

‘Does apologizing end your military service?’

“I’m sorry.”

‘I asked, does apologizing end your military service?’

Ah, this is it.

As this vivid memory from over ten years ago flashed through Alon’s mind, he unknowingly began to sweat.

“I-I… I’ve been disrespectful…!”

Carmine, unable to endure the pressure from the nobles any longer, fled the ballroom as if in retreat. As soon as he left, the nobles quickly approached Alon and started speaking to him.

“Count Palatio, are you alright?”

“I’m fine, but…”

Alon looked at the three nobles, wondering why they were being so kind to him.

However…

“Look at that. It seems they’ve already heard the rumors.”

“Seems like the rumors are true if even those big shots are getting involved.”

“If Duke Altia and Count Zenonia get involved in politics, they’ll be unstoppable. But look at the other nobles—they seem confused. It’s still a secret, so be careful what you say.”

“…Where on earth do you hear things like this?”

“There are ways.”

Thanks to his heightened hearing, Alon overheard the hushed conversation of the noble who had been secretly whispering earlier. It was only then that he began to piece together what was happening and realized how absurd the situation was.

“Now that I think about it, I haven’t had the chance to talk with you, Count. I understand, though, as you’re probably very busy.”

Marquis Mardinyo, speaking as if he knew everything, chuckled and continued the conversation. Alon began seriously contemplating whether or not he should clarify that the rumors were baseless nonsense.

After all, not doing so could lead to unnecessary complications later on.

But then again, speaking up now might make the situation even more awkward. As Alon mulled over what to do…

“By the way, I heard you’re studying magic, Count. Is that true?”

“That’s correct.”

“Then I thought I might give you a small gift. Among the artifacts I acquired after clearing out some orc hordes, there’s one that stores magical energy for later use. How does that sound?”

“Now that you mention it, I also prepared a little gift.”

Silence followed as Alon listened to the nobles.

That day, Alon ended up receiving two magical artifacts and five mana restoration potions from the three nobles.

Meanwhile, as these influential figures gathered around Alon, leaving the other nobles bewildered, Count Crylde and Count Edolon closed their eyes tightly in despair, thinking:

‘Did we mess with the wrong person…?’

‘This is really bad…!!’

***

Four days after the banquet began, as Alon’s collection of spoils steadily grew…

“…An outer god descended in the north?”

“Yes, that’s the information I received. Apparently, the purple crystal is also connected to the outer god, but… they say they don’t know for sure, as the information comes from ancient texts.”

“Regardless, it’s thrown Caliban into chaos.”

With only two days left in the banquet, Alon, having gathered this intel through the information guild, started contemplating something.

And then, without hesitation, he made a decision.

“Evan.”

“Yes.”

“Once the banquet is over, complete the tasks we need to finish, and then we’re heading straight to Caliban.”

He had made up his mind without any doubt.

Round 126

In the heart of Gangnam, Seoul.

The headquarters of the Terror Guild was quite modest compared to its reputation.

Of course, considering the land price, it must be astronomical, but compared to the expansive estates of the Iron Blood Group and other prominent guilds, it was quite ordinary.

“Thank you for your hard work.”

“Hmm.”

“Shall I prepare your meal?”

“No, let’s go to the cafeteria.”

After returning from an external meeting, Johann Rothschild took off his coat and hung it over his chair as he spoke.

Having moved from Austria to Korea and even gone so far as to become naturalized, he was satisfied with his current life, free from the shadow of his family, as he headed down to the cafeteria.

Though his days were just as busy as when he worked for his family, the sense of fulfillment was different.

“Secretary Kim, what’s on the menu today?”

“We have pork bulgogi set, spicy chicken and octopus stir-fry set, potato dish and goulash set, and sausage set.”

“And for dessert?”

“Today’s desserts are chocolate cake with apricot jam, apple pie with cinnamon and mint, and a set of three traditional Korean sweets.”

“Sounds promising.”

What Johann loved most about coming to Korea was the food.

Initially, he planned to start a small business, but he ended up naturalizing and founding the number one guild.

It was no exaggeration to say it was the power of culture.

However, since he sometimes missed his hometown food, the Terror Guild’s cafeteria offered a variety of dishes every day.

As a result, Johann, the guild master, usually had his meals in the cafeteria.

Listening to his secretary, Johann suddenly remembered something and spoke again.

“By the way, I heard we recently acquired an item made by the awakener Lee Kyu-seong.”

“Yes, we managed to get a few. Besides what was sent to the lab for research, there’s one potato and one sweet potato left in the building.”

“Hmm, shall we try tasting it? Now that we’ll be signing a contract with Ara Hongryeon, there’s no need to keep it so tightly guarded. Let’s taste the potato.”

“I’ll contact the kitchen right away.”

“Please prepare it simply, as a fry.”

As they headed down, they saw a quiet cafeteria.

It was well past lunchtime, so most people had already finished their meals.

“Ah, Guild Master!”

“Mr. Seung-ju, you missed your meal time too?”

“Yes, I just came up from Gimpo after settling the by-products.”

The person who had been having a late meal greeted Johann warmly.

After ordering from the kiosk and waiting, the food soon arrived.

Johann and his secretary naturally took the food from the serving line and sat next to Kim Seung-ju.

“Seeing you having your meal now, did you just come back from somewhere?”

“Yes, I had an external meeting. The meeting went longer than expected, so I missed the meal time.”

Saying so, Johann checked the lunch menu he had chosen for today.

Spicy chicken and octopus stir-fry, his favorite combination.

The stir-fried octopus in spicy sauce paired with chicken was perfect.

“Phew, that was a good meal.”

“Ah, Mr. Seung-ju, hold on a moment.”

“Yes, Guild Master?”

“I asked the kitchen for something. Please stay and have a taste.”

“Sure!”

In fact, he hadn’t missed the rumors about Kyu-seong’s food items.

His subordinates had already talked about it endlessly, so he was aware of it.

Moreover, since a few guild members had already tasted it, there was some anticipation.

Although Johann hadn’t had the chance to taste it himself, he had managed to obtain some of Kyu-seong’s crops recently, most of which had been sent to the lab for research.

“Guild Master, the fries you mentioned are ready.”

“Ah, thank you. Chef, please have a bite too.”

Before eating the main dish of octopus stir-fry, they each took a hot fry.

Even though it was a cafeteria, it wasn’t just any ordinary place, and the fries were perfectly cooked. The thick half-moon shaped potato pieces emitted an irresistible aroma.

“The smell is wonderful.”

“The rumors seem to be true.”

The secretary nodded in agreement.

As the guild leader, Johann had focused more on the effects of Kyu-seong’s items than their taste. However, now more than ever, he felt his mouth watering as he picked up a fry.

Not being an awakener, he couldn’t see the item window, but he silently stared at the fry he was holding.

He then slowly brought it to his mouth and took a gentle bite.

Crunch!

While marveling at the chef’s frying skills, he suddenly felt a powerful flavor envelop his mouth. The crispy exterior gave way to the soft, fluffy interior of the potato, hitting his taste buds with a burst of intense sensation before melting away.

“Wow.”

Just one bite.

Although he had only eaten about a third of the fry, the overwhelming taste and sensation he experienced was extraordinary. This was not just a potato dish. It was potato art.

Johann wanted to call it that.

“How is it, Guild Master?”

“…You all should try it. It would be an insult to describe this taste with mere words.”

“Is it that good?!”

Soon, Kim Seung-ju, Secretary Kim, and even the chef each took a fry and tasted it. They all immediately understood what Johann meant.

A heated silence ensued.

Though no words were spoken, everyone’s eyes and gestures conveyed their amazement.

Seeing everyone’s reaction, Johann also took another steaming fry and put it in his mouth. The crispy, hot texture, and the fluffy potato interior crumbled at the slightest pressure.

‘Ah!’

Delicious.

He felt it once again.

Simply delicious!

The quiet sound of fries being eaten filled the cafeteria.

The fries made from just one potato quickly disappeared.

“Ugh.”

The secretary sucked the grease off her fingers, startled, and then wiped them with a tissue. She seemed embarrassed by her unintentional display of impropriety.

“I was mistaken.”

Regardless, Johann opened his mouth with a serious expression. “Mistaken, you say…?”

“I thought the value of this item, no, this food, was solely in its effect as an item. But I was wrong.”

Johann imagined it. Now it was just fried potatoes. What if he used it to make a hometown dish? It didn’t even have to be a hometown dish. He was incredibly curious about the flavors and taste it would produce if made into a more proper dish.

“The crops of Awakener Lee Kyu-seong have immense value as food alone.”

“That’s right!” The chef, savoring the lingering taste, nodded vigorously in agreement. “Secretary Kim, it seems we need to completely revise our plans.”

“!!” The secretary looked surprised at Johann’s words about revising plans, while the other two tilted their heads in curiosity. “I will convene an executive meeting. Schedule it for when we have an open slot next week.”

“Aaaahm~!”

***

I put a well-made lettuce wrap in my mouth. Ara watched intently from beside me, chewing enthusiastically.

“Hmm? Hmmm!?”

The harmony of meat, Doenjang (fermented bean paste), and garlic. As I chewed, the flavor and grease of the meat burst, mixing explosively with the Doenjang and garlic.

“Gulp.”

Even with food in my mouth, saliva flowed. My stomach growled, demanding the meat be sent down quickly.

‘Meat, as expected!’

The greasy pork belly, yet the lettuce wrapping it, perfectly balanced the potentially overwhelming aftertaste, creating a flawless wrap. Apparently, others thought the same as their movements became busier. Amidst it all, it was amusing to see people occasionally making wraps to feed Ara.

“Hmm, hmhmhm!”

Ara laughed as she kept eating without being able to speak. It must be really delicious.

“Hmm! Hm!”

“You can talk after you finish.”

“Gulp! I want to! I want to make one too!”

She seemed to be trying to say she wanted to make a wrap herself, but couldn’t because she was continuously being fed.

I picked a large lettuce leaf and placed it on Ara’s tiny palm. She then picked out all the things she liked and filled it.

“Ara?”

“Yes?”

“…Never mind, it’s nothing.”

Seeing the overflowing, no, overflowing wrap, Ara exclaimed happily.

“Wrap!”

“Wow, Ara’s wrap looks delicious too,” my mother clapped and responded enthusiastically.

We all watched Ara, wondering if she could fit that big wrap into her mouth in one bite.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, ahhh~!”

“Me? You made this for me?”

“Yes!”

Wait, was that wrap made for me? Ara slowly approached, the heavily laden lettuce wrap precariously wobbling closer, looking almost pitiable.

“Brother, you have to eat it in one bite. Don’t disappoint me.”

“And you call yourself my sister?”

Listening to Seon-ah’s cold words, I opened my mouth as wide as I could.

“Ahhh!”

The tower Ara had painstakingly built was deposited into my mouth. Somehow managing to fit Ara’s wrap in my mouth…

‘This is delicious?!’

It was surprisingly tasty. The ingredients couldn’t fail to be good, but it was even better than expected.

“How is it? How is it?”

Ara, with a look of hopeful expectation, was cute as she had put everything she liked into the wrap. Slowly swallowing, I gave her a thumbs up.

“Wow!”

Ara’s eyes sparkled as she began making a second wrap. I thought she was finally going to eat it herself, but…

“Ahhh~!”

“Uh, uh? Ara, is that for your sister?”

“Yes!”

Ara’s wrap delivery wasn’t over. She ended up feeding everyone present with her special wraps, finishing with a satisfied expression.

“Hmm!”

Ara, with a pleased look, finally ate the wrap she made herself. Meanwhile, all the food had been eaten.

“Urgh.”

“It’s tasty, but I can’t eat like this again…”

My parents and Seon-ah, being ordinary people, lay sprawled out. At least So-yeon and Hanul, being awakened ones, seemed to be coping better.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had so much of Kyu-seong’s food.”

“Such a filling meal! Hahaha!”

Seeing everyone satisfied made me feel good too. Is this a farmer’s heart? It was so fulfilling to see everyone enjoy food made from my crops.

“Alright, let’s rest a bit before making the meju (fermented soybean blocks).”

“Okay. Let’s rest a bit,”

Mother said as she settled into the hammock installed on the wooden pillar. While she rested for a moment, I decided to check on something else.

I entered one of the storage sheds in the village. Inside were large tubs filled with soybeans and water. This was the process of soaking the beans to make meju.

“Alright, let’s take a look.”

I took something out of the space-expansion artifact I received from the guild.

“Wow, what is that?”

“It’s a tool that artificially creates sunlight. I’m going to use it for growing chili peppers.”

It was an item powered by magic stones. It cost over 100 million won, but I could afford it with the recent increase in my funds.

“Hm, hm.”

While I was reading the manual, So-yeon and Hanul, who had been looking around the village, entered the storage shed.

“Oh, are those the beans for making meju?”

“That’s right!” Ara answered proudly.

Nodding beside her, I checked the time, thinking it was about time to start making the meju.

“Ara, can you go wake up Mom?”

“Okay!”

Soybean paste, chili paste, soy sauce!

Just wait, I’m coming!

They say that life’s changes always come without warning, violently and abruptly.

But even so, such drastic changes arriving overnight would be a bit much.

Today was the day Aiden was dragged along without any right to refuse the request to “pretend to be my husband,” as if he had no choice.

“Starting today, we’ll live together,” they said, along with a subtle threat to hand over the evidence of his crimes to the police if he didn’t comply.

All his rebellious attempts and escape plans were sunk by Lord Noel’s unyielding yet subtle smile.

At least they allowed him to leave a single letter to his family, letting them know he had somewhere to go—this was their final gesture of kindness.

“You’ll be staying in this room from now on.”

Inside, the female knight assigned to guide Aiden clanked her silver armor as she spoke in a business-like tone.

Her name was Stella, if he remembered correctly.

Wasn’t she Lord Noel’s closest confidante?

She was one of the few who knew about the forced sham marriage that Aiden had been coerced into, alongside Lord Noel.

“I’ll assign a guard to attend to you, so if you need anything, relay it to them, and they’ll prepare it promptly.”

“Understood.”

“Soon, you’ll be summoned to the imperial palace. Please be ready for that.”

Even though the words entering his hazy mind were jumbled and incoherent, Aiden managed to catch at least one question.

“The imperial palace?”

“Lord Noel is a national hero, a symbol of the empire’s military. His Majesty the Emperor has always kept an ear to the ground regarding potential marriage alliances, so meeting him is inevitable.”

“Is that really necessary?”

Seeing Stella’s expression, Aiden clamped his mouth shut.

Thinking about it, if they were going to let him refuse that easily, they wouldn’t have dragged him here without asking for his opinion in the first place.

Instead, he decided to ask a slightly different question.

“Is it really okay to entrust something so important to someone like me?”

What he meant was, how could they ask him, of all people, to take part in this ridiculous sham of a marriage?

“Lord Noel decided it. There’s no way it wouldn’t be okay.”

“…”

“Lord Noel has never made a wrong decision.”

The sheer blind trust behind her words left Aiden speechless.

It almost felt like she was chastising him for doubting Lord Noel’s judgment.

The thoughts that followed were only natural.

‘Is this person crazy?’

There was a certain madness about her.

If Lord Noel said the sun rises in the west, she’d likely get mad at the sun for rising in the east the next morning.

“Then, please take it easy and rest.”

With those words, Stella closed the door and left, allowing Aiden to let out a quiet sigh.

Everything had happened so suddenly, but first, he needed to gather his thoughts.

Sitting in the chair, staring into space, a window immediately popped up in front of him, responding to his thoughts as always.

-Skill Info

◆ Weaver of Fate

Only you know the truth of this world. By forming bonds with key characters in the main story, you’ll receive new rewards!

【Noel Astria Simus】

– Bond: Stage 1

– You can copy one of her skills.

He was dumbfounded.

The grandiose name “Weaver of Fate” aside for the moment…

‘A bond with Lord Noel, Stage 1?’

What kind of bond could there possibly be between someone who kidnapped him and forced him into this fake marriage, and him, the hostage dragged along?

There hadn’t even been enough interaction to develop Stockholm Syndrome.

The few conversations they had exchanged were all there was.

Still, under that ridiculous label, there was one thing that caught his attention in a positive way.

‘Skill copying, huh…?’

This meant he could replicate one of Lord Noel’s abilities exactly as it was.

Given Lord Noel’s standing in this world, just knowing he had access to such a thing would be of considerable help.

Because…

Failure to complete the listed events will result in severe penalties!

◆ Sham Marriage

– You have been chosen as Lord Noel’s spouse. Maintain the contract until the end!

– Additional information will be updated as events related to the main story unfold!

Aiden narrowed his eyes, glaring at the windows floating in front of him.

Just reading the words “sham marriage” made Aiden’s stomach churn, but the bigger problem lay in the content below it.

What was this “main story” supposed to be?

A grand battle against evil forces threatening the world.

A continent teetering on the brink of war, caught in a swirling maelstrom of schemes and plots from various ambitious leaders.

Stories of great people doing great things.

In other words, this meant—

“If I get involved, I’m going to die.”

The problem was, whether he liked it or not, he was already entangled in it.

What should he do?

To be precise, how could he drop everything and escape, even now?

While Aiden was pondering, he suddenly heard the sound of a door being flung open, startling him.

Earlier, Stella had mentioned assigning a guard, so it was probably them.

Immediately, Aiden straightened his posture and composed his expression.

For the time being, while he was here, he had to play the part of Lord Noel’s spouse.

“Pleased to meet you. I’m—”

Bang!

Before Aiden could finish his greeting, the person who burst through the door spoke coldly.

“I am Gael Oslon, a long-time friend of Lord Noel and heir to the Marquisate of Oslon. Draw your sword.”

“…”

What was this guy even saying?

There was no way this was something a guard would say, and the person who had entered the room clearly wasn’t a guard either.

Clad in armor and carrying a sword, he looked every bit the warrior ready for battle.

And from him emanated an unmistakable bloodlust, which he wasn’t even trying to hide.

Aiden barely managed to hold back the trembling in his cheeks as he replied.

“Sorry, but I don’t quite understand—”

“I heard you’re Lord Noel’s fiancé. I’d like to test your skills.”

“Why?”

Seriously, why?

Were there only people like this around Lord Noel?

“I’ve never heard Lord Noel mention you before. All I know is that the engagement was suddenly decided today.”

With that, Gael Oslon unsheathed his longsword with a sharp sound.

“I cannot rest easy unless I personally test the person my friend has chosen as a spouse. A person’s true nature can be revealed through the clash of swords. Come at me.”

“…”

Aiden realized one thing for certain:

There were indeed a lot of crazy people around Lord Noel.

As the knight approached him with his sword drawn, Aiden’s gaze urgently darted towards the system window.

If he didn’t do something, he might really get stabbed.

He had to think of something—anything!

-System Message

Using the skill copying ability of ‘Weaver of Fate.’

▶Analyzing the skill list of ‘Noel Astria Simus.’

▶Displaying the most valuable skill at the top.

Without even looking, Aiden picked the first one on the list.

He didn’t care what it was, he just needed to get out of this situation now!

-System Message

▶Copying ‘Unique Ability: Heart of Pure White.’

This is a skill possessed only by the individual in question in the entire world.

▶Lord Noel’s interest in you may increase!

A troubling message flashed across his vision, but Aiden didn’t have time to worry about it.

“I’ll make the first move.”

“…”

Where had this man’s sense of chivalry gone?

Shouldn’t he at least let Aiden make the first move?

“Stand straight and show me your skill!”

With those words, Aiden squeezed his eyes shut as he saw the blade descending toward him.

***

“How does he look?”

At the soft-spoken question, Stella barely suppressed the sigh that threatened to escape.

She couldn’t show such discourtesy in front of the revered Lord Noel.

“He looks terrified.”

“To what extent?”

“It’s clear he feels he’s been dragged into something he can’t handle. He looks like a puppy that’s been caught in the rain.”

Hearing the blunt assessment, Noel couldn’t help but let out a laugh.

It must have been amusing because she even set down the practice sword she had been lightly wielding.

“That’s only natural, Stella. If he had adapted to this situation so quickly, I would’ve been the one more surprised.”

“…”

Noel Astria Simus—or as she was also called, “Lionheart”—held an absolute position within the military.

Stella herself contributed to cultivating that reputation, but seeing his attitude now made her question something.

“May I ask one thing?”

“Go ahead.”

“Why that man, of all people?”

As Noel wiped her sweat, her crimson eyes slowly turned toward Stella.

Though there was no emotion or intent in those eyes, the moment Stella met that clear gaze, she barely managed to calm the breath that had momentarily caught in her throat.

Just being in the same space with her was enough to sense a different level of presence.

It was as if the entire world revolved around that woman.

So, it was inevitable that Stella’s voice would tremble slightly as she spoke next.

“…There were many other candidates for the marriage. Surely, anyone would have been better than that man.”

“No joking around.”

Before Stella could continue her thought, Noel cut her off with a firm voice.

“In the current situation, no matter who I marry, it’s going to cause a stir. You’re aware of that, Stella.”

Indeed, she was.

It had only been a year since the end of the Alliance War, a conflict that had plunged the entire continent into a pit of chaos for decades.

In such a state, the national hero of a country, one who stood just below the emperor in prestige, marrying into any faction could very well set off a chain reaction that might shatter the fragile peace.

“In that case, wouldn’t it be better to just reject everyone outright?”

“I could do that with everyone else, sure. But when the prince himself is pushing, even I can’t easily brush it off.”

At this, Stella had no choice but to hold her tongue.

No matter how much of a legendary knight Lord Noel was, in the end, she was still a soldier under the empire’s military.

It was a dizzying situation, just imagining a direct member of the imperial family pushing for a marriage.

Especially considering the rumors surrounding the prince in question.

“Yeah, I don’t want that kind of marriage either. So, the alternative is him.”

Noel chuckled as she looked at Stella, whose face had grown pale.

“An outsider who suddenly appeared out of nowhere, without any political background. If I claim we married out of love, even His Highness won’t be able to find fault with it all the way through, don’t you think?”

“Even among those kinds of outsiders, there surely were better alternatives than that man, Aiden.”

Still speaking stiffly, Stella voiced her doubt, and Noel tilted her head slightly.

“Stella, didn’t you look into that man’s background?”

“I remember there was nothing particularly notable about him.”

A swindler from the back alleys, never involved in any major schemes or incidents.

How insignificant must a criminal be to not even have a record of being arrested by the authorities?

They must not have even considered him worth catching.

“Exactly. And that’s the key.”

As Stella reflected on this, Noel’s voice softly continued.

“How do you think he managed to avoid all those ‘notable points’?”

“Pardon?”

Seeing Stella’s blank expression, Noel smiled gently as she explained further.

“He’s strangely ordinary, don’t you think? Considering his occupation.”

For someone working as a con artist—a profession that would naturally draw attention—he had never been arrested, nor had he ever come under investigation by the authorities.

In every sense, he was a thoroughly unremarkable petty criminal.

Yes, thoroughly unremarkable.

Almost to the point where it felt intentional.

“…I’m not sure what you mean.”

“Well, there’s something there. I’ll have a chance to explain it soon enough.”

With that, Lord Noel straightened her wooden training sword once more.

“It’s just that he seems like an interesting person, that’s all.”

“…”

When Stella thought about the man named Aiden, it felt like an overly generous evaluation from her perspective.

But before she could voice further doubts, they slipped away under her breath.

She could feel the flow of energy through Lord Noel’s body as she held her wooden sword.

It was the blessing of Karva, the Empire’s deity of war, granted to her followers.

The source of the superhuman strength wielded by the imperial knights lay in the cultivation and refinement of internal energy, which could then be released outward.

The mastery of this technique was measured by the color of the aura.

A famous example would be the “Knight of Dawn,” who first developed techniques involving the use of aura in swordsmanship and combat arts.

The first knight, a monster said to be able to cleave mountains and split the sky with just a sword.

A hero revered as the “Saint of the Sword,” who could compress the energy within him into only two colors: silver and blue.

And now, standing here.

A genius who could make even such legends seem like relics of a bygone era.

As Noel exhaled deeply, a mist-like aura began to rise from her body.

‘Pure white.’

Stella swallowed dryly.

The aura Noel commanded was pure white, without a single blemish.

More refined, more simple, and more distinct than anyone else’s.

Among all the countless talents that spanned the entire long history of the empire, as numerous as grains of sand on the beach, Noel was the only knight who could compress her aura into a single color.

“Noel… Lord Noel!”

Hearing a soldier’s voice cut through such a miraculous scene, Stella’s face twisted in irritation.

To interrupt this solemn moment—if it was something trivial, she would never forgive…

“The eldest son of the Marquis of Oslon has entered your fiancé’s quarters!”

…And it was serious enough to be unforgivable.

Both Stella and Noel’s faces hardened at once.

Gael Oslon, Noel’s long-time friend.

Not a bad person. Not a bad person, but…

“That muscle-brained idiot is going to cause trouble again…!”

“Stella, that’s a bit harsh.”

Despite her scolding words, Noel’s wry smile showed she didn’t entirely disagree.

Her quick motion of throwing on her cloak revealed her determination to intervene personally, knowing Gael would almost certainly cause a problem.

Given Gael’s personality, he likely barged in, testing Aiden’s character with a sword without any warning, which could become quite a serious issue.

He might not be a formally appointed elite knight, but as the marquis’ heir, Gael had received professional combat training for years.

Throw him among regular soldiers, and he’d be like a lion dropped into a flock of sheep.

‘If I don’t get there quickly, something bad’s really going to happen.’

Moreover, Aiden’s expected abilities were likely below that of an ordinary soldier. It wouldn’t be surprising at all if something disastrous occurred.

Noel took a deep breath, strengthening her legs.

She was ready to leap toward Aiden’s quarters in an instant.

She might even break through the window, but in such an urgent situation, what could she do?

That’s what she was thinking.

Crash!

“Aaaaahhh!”

Until she saw someone fall from the window she had been planning to break through herself, screaming as they plummeted.

Their full armor was crumpled as if they had been struck by a giant’s fist.

“…”

That…

Wasn’t that Gael?

Just by the sight of his fully-armored form, she could tell it was the man she knew.

And following that, she saw someone hurriedly leaning out of the broken window.

“Hey! Hey! Are you alright?!”

The one shouting from the shattered window, completely unscathed, was none other than Aiden Kellermain.

“…?”

And wrapped around his body was a pure white aura.

The exact same as the one Noel had just been wielding moments before.

“…What?”

Even Noel, typically so composed, let out a stunned sound at the sight.

The battle with the goblins ended in victory. Thanks to the knights and mercenaries responding calmly, the frontlines held strong, and Alon’s magic once again destroyed a detachment of enemies who were moving to attack the nobles from behind, quickly tilting the battle in their favor. Of course, with hundreds of mutated goblins, there were casualties, but the number was small given the scale of the battle.

The final blow came when a knight pierced the head of the last goblin, ending the battle completely. As soon as the soldiers confirmed the battle was over, they sighed in deep relief and turned their gazes toward Alon, who was looking down at the goblin corpses. Despite having just fought a life-or-death struggle, he remained expressionless, as if the battle had left no impact on him, causing the mercenaries to look at him with awe. They couldn’t forget the sight of Alon turning dozens of goblins into mere chunks of meat without even changing his expression.

However, while the knights and mercenaries admired Alon, he was thinking, ‘I nearly died in a single strike…!’ Though his face showed no sign, inside he was working hard to calm his wildly racing heart. Despite bearing the Insignia of the Impure, which allowed him to cast three times more spells than usual, after using walls and shields twice each, he had been reduced to a mere mortal due to the limitations of his mana capacity.

‘It’s a good thing the knights won,’ he thought. Though the odds of the knights and mercenaries losing were slim, even against mutated goblins, when he had lost all means of self-defense, he had felt a desperate fear.

‘Perhaps I should have just dropped out earlier… No, it was a good thing I stayed close… but more importantly…’ Alon praised his past self for acting rationally and, having calmed his heart, turned his gaze to the goblin before him, his expression growing serious. He knew all too well the significance of the purple amethyst emerging from the goblin’s body.

“Why… a divine descent?”

This was a strange phenomenon that occurred among the monsters of the continent when an Outer God tried to descend upon the world. The monsters affected by divine descent became more ferocious and physically stronger. While the current group of soldiers could handle the monsters they would encounter on their journey to the Duke’s territory, Alon was concerned about the fact that the divine descent had occurred at all.

The phenomenon meant that an Outer God would soon descend upon the land. Typically, such gods could not descend unless one of the Five Great Sins manifested, but now, even these borderland gods were about to arrive.

‘This… can’t be good…’

The descent of Outer Gods was a grave matter for Alon. While not as catastrophic as the Great Sins, if these gods started rampaging, entire kingdoms could vanish easily. There were only six kingdoms on the continent excluding the Empire, meaning a one-third chance that his future plans would be destroyed. In fact, if he were lucky enough to even be able to think about his future at that point, he would consider it fortunate. Alon’s expression grew serious as he stared at the goblin.

However, there were others who looked even more serious than Alon—so serious, in fact, that their expressions seemed to suggest they had lost everything.

Those individuals were Count Crylde and Count Edolon.

***

A few days after the appearance of the mutated goblin, with only one day left until their arrival at the Duke’s estate, Alon experienced two changes in that short time. One was that the nobles, who once looked at him with blatant contempt and ridicule, especially when Counts Crylde and Edolon made their snide comments, no longer displayed such expressions. The second change was:

“Count Palatio, this is some meat I brought from my estate. Would you like to try it?”

“Count, if it pleases you, I could offer some support to your domain. What do you think?”

Count Crylde and Count Edolon, who had spent the past few days mocking Alon, were now fawning over him, trying to curry favor. The two counts, who now seemed ready to give Alon anything he wanted, clung to his side, flattering him with servile smiles, while Alon remained indifferent. But the counts were desperate—truly desperate.

The display of power Alon had shown just days ago was too strong to dismiss as mere “luck” in claiming the title of Count Palatio. Moreover, they still remembered what the 3rd-tier mage, whom Baron Amon had brought to flaunt his wealth, said that night: that Alon’s magic was undoubtedly beyond a 2nd-tier level.

Upon hearing that, both counts began to reconsider the rumors circulating in society, wondering if they were wrong about Alon. While there were still some unresolved doubts, that no longer mattered. What was important was that the two counts had realized Alon was hiding a power strong enough to not need protection.

This meant the power that had supposedly wiped out Avalon in a single day, the power held by Count Palatio, could be real. With this realization, their only option was to quickly win Alon’s favor. While some might argue that it would be better to investigate the situation thoroughly before making any moves, this didn’t apply to those who knew the Palatio family well.

The two counts, having witnessed firsthand the brutality of the Palatio family’s notorious behavior, knew how cruel they could be. Although Alon, the third son, had never shown such behavior himself, the counts were convinced that Alon shared the family’s cruel and ruthless nature. After all, the Palatio family had been full of miscreants since his grandfather’s time.

Thanks to this, Alon had enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle in recent days. Instead of sweet potatoes and corn, he ate meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the wine they occasionally brought along was also excellent. However, despite receiving these gifts for several consecutive days, Alon’s expression did not soften, still preoccupied with thoughts of the goblin from a few days ago.

‘Who could it be…?’

No matter how much Alon pondered, no clear answer emerged. The divine descent was merely a sign that an Outer God was about to descend, and there was no way to know exactly which god or when and where it would occur.

Although it was meaningless to dwell on it, Alon couldn’t help but worry, knowing that his future plans could be completely ruined in an instant. He could go from being a noble to a commoner in the blink of an eye, which was why he couldn’t stop thinking about it.

“I’ll have to gather as much information as I can once I reach the estate.”

As he thought this, he glanced at the nobles beside him, who were eagerly trying to make up for their previous behavior, even at the expense of their pride. He was once again reminded of the Palatio family’s infamous reputation.

‘…I didn’t think they would react this way over just a slight doubt about a rumor.’

As Alon watched the counts’ desperate display, he realized how deeply the rumors about his family had affected them. However, despite understanding their fear, he had no intention of easing their anxieties. Alon considered himself cool-headed, but he also had a petty side.

The counts’ performance finally came to an end when Alon arrived at the Duke Rotegre’s estate.

***

As soon as Alon arrived at the Duke Rotegre’s estate, what greeted him was an absurdly large mansion—no, multiple mansions.

‘How many mansions are there inside this estate? Of course, the rich would have this many,’ he thought, as he noticed the variety of mansions, almost as if someone with diverse tastes in interior design had collected them. Alon soon realized that all these mansions belonged to the Duke’s concubines, causing him to shake his head in disbelief.

‘How does his body even survive?’ he wondered briefly, but upon arriving at the ballroom in the middle of a grand party, he was once again shocked.

Everything he saw screamed wealth. Even the wine glasses, which one wouldn’t normally pay much attention to, were rimmed with gold. The chandeliers, made entirely of gold, made Alon feel the urge to steal one and sell it as he wandered around the ballroom.

Naturally, the ballroom was filled with many nobles. As expected, the Duke of Rotegre, who appeared incredibly thin, was there chatting with numerous nobles. Alon didn’t bother trying to join their conversations. It wasn’t hard to guess that there would be no benefit in doing so—especially in this ballroom, which felt even worse than the previous one he had attended.

Instead of mingling, Alon decided to stand nearby, snacking on food and eavesdropping on the nobles’ conversations. After all, his servant, Evan, had already gone off to contact the information guild as soon as they arrived at the estate.

As Alon savored a dessert that resembled an egg tart alongside some wine, he overheard an interesting piece of news from the nobles’ conversation.

“Baron Daldoran, have you heard the news?”

“What news do you mean?”

“You know, the rumor that Duke Altia and Count Zenonia not only formed an alliance but are also trying to establish a faction?”

“Ah, that rumor? Yes, I’ve heard about it.”

The two nobles, acting as though they were discussing some great secret, moved to a corner and began whispering. However, with his enhanced hearing, Alon could easily pick up their conversation.

“But is that true? I couldn’t believe they had allied in the first place. If they really form a faction, they could overpower all the current factions combined.”

“Exactly. It might be something unprecedented.”

Alon was a little surprised upon hearing this, but his expression didn’t change much. Even if such rumors were true, he didn’t think those two would be able to maintain their alliance for long.

As he pondered this, Alon couldn’t help but widen his eyes in surprise at the delicious taste of the egg tart in his mouth, nodding in approval. “This is good.” Without hesitation, he grabbed another and popped it into his mouth.

However, just then, the conversation he was listening to took an even more interesting turn.

“But that’s not the real issue.”

“What do you mean? Is there an even bigger rumor?”

“Of course, I wouldn’t have started if there wasn’t.”

“Mmm… what is it, then?”

“This is something I heard very discreetly, so don’t go spreading it around. I’ve heard that neither Duke Altia nor Count Zenonia is the leader of this faction.”

“…What? Then who is?”

“Mmm… Count Palatio.”

“…Count Palatio?”

“Yes, the leader of the faction… is said to be Count Palatio.”

“Is that true?”

“Of course. Do you think I would lie about something like this?”

“Mmm…? What?”

Hearing this, Alon instinctively turned to look at the nobles discussing the secret and found himself gaping in shock at what they had just revealed.

Round 125

Prev | TOC | Next

Descending the familiar stairs, I opened the door.

Kang Hanul and Jeong So-yeon looked puzzled as they stared at the door that suddenly appeared.

Despite their confusion, they followed us into the Dungeon of Gluttony.

And there, immediately revealed, was a pure white landscape.

“Oh my! It’s snowing?!”

“…I wonder if we can still catch fish in winter.”

“Brother! Why didn’t you tell us it was snowing?”

My first plan to surprise my family was a success.

Then, looking to the side…

“What is this…?”

“A double dungeon? That’s impossible!”

Their reactions were as satisfying as I’d hoped.

The two couldn’t stop marveling at the surroundings, touching the snow and looking up at the sky.

Ara couldn’t hide her grin as she watched their reactions but suddenly sensed something and quickly turned her head.

“Woffy! Purr!”

The kids who always greet us first when we enter were running towards us energetically.

Amidst the snowy landscape, Woffy stood out while Purr was running with a stealthy yet swift pace.

“Hehe.”

Today, one of the monsters even had a small creature clinging to its back.

Although Hanul and So-yeon might have been startled by the sudden appearance of monsters, they stayed calm, likely influenced by our composed reactions.

Or rather, they were looking at me with wide eyes.

“Kyu-seong, do you handle both fire wolves and ghost horses?!”

“Wow, Kyu-seong! You must have lured them with food, just like you did to me!”

Ignoring Hanul’s strange comment, I helped my family onto the backs of Purr and Woffy.

“You both can run, right?”

“Mm! Where are we going?”

“To the field. It’s quite spacious.”

“Wow, this place is amazing. You’ve kept it so well hidden, Kyu-seong. You truly are the mastermind.”

I scratched my head, deciding not to respond, and looked at Ara.

“Ara, it’s a running race!”

“Alright! It’s a race!”

I sent Purr and Woffy off first, and we followed behind.

As Ara dashed ahead, the distance between us grew.

“Hahaha! It’s been a while since I’ve had such a refreshing run!”

Snow flew in all directions as Hanul raced ahead, leaving Ara, So-yeon, and me in the snow spray.

With eyes wide open, we chased after Hanul.

“Stop right there!”

Ara picked up speed, closing in on Hanul.

He laughed heartily and quickened his pace.

Despite not running far, we quickly reached the field.

“Ugh!”

Ara, unable to catch Hanul before arriving, puffed her cheeks in frustration.

“Hahaha! You’re still not there yet, Ara! You need to get stronger! Haha!”

“I will get stronger!”

Meanwhile, Jeong So-yeon was tugging at my sleeve, her eyes fixed on the scene before her.

“Kyu-seong, Kyu-seong, what is this? Is it a village of indigenous people living here?”

The houses and buildings built by the small creatures looked like a fairytale village celebrating Christmas in the snow.

The quaint buildings, well-maintained landscaping, and roads had slimes and small creatures bustling around.

Noticing us, they wobbled over to greet us.

“Cute!!”

“Hehe.”

Jeong So-yeon clutched her chest, overwhelmed by the adorable creatures trying to greet us in their own way.

“Ugh.”

Seon-ah, what are you doing?

Seon-ah mimicked Jeong So-yeon’s reaction and then collapsed from the back of Woffy. Fortunately, the soft snow cushioned her fall, and she clutched her heart without any injuries.

“This village was made by our kids. They’re not natives but rather immigrants.”

“Immigrants?”

“Yes. I’ve been feeding and raising them.”

“Wow…”

Jeong So-yeon couldn’t close her mouth as she looked at the village. Then, she suddenly took out her phone and handed it to me.

“Um, if it’s not too much trouble, could I ask you to take a picture?”

“Of course. Not just one, I can take dozens.”

“Thank you! If I had known, I would have brought a selfie stick!”

I took several pictures with the cute, snow-covered village in the background. No matter how I took the photos, they looked stunning against the dreamy sky.

“Brother, why didn’t you decorate with twinkling lights?”

“Twinkling lights? What’s that?”

“The small lights you use to decorate Christmas trees.”

“How am I supposed to install lights without electricity? Even if we had electricity, why should I bother?”

“Dad!”

Seon-ah quickly ran over to Dad, probably to ask if we could install electricity here. Shaking my head, Jeong So-yeon laughed.

“You have a close-knit family. It’s nice to see.”

“Close-knit? Hmm…”

Meanwhile, Ara was showing something to my parents and Hanul. They were the snow sculptures we made the day before.

“Wow, Ara, did you make this big thing?”

“It’s this big!”

Ara explained the size with her arms wide open, looking incredibly cute. Meanwhile, Seon-ah started capturing Ara and the snow sculptures with her camera.

“Mom and Dad, why don’t you make a small snowman since you’re here? We can decorate the village with it.”

“At this age, making a snowman…”

“Oh ho ho. Shall we?”

Dad was about to refuse but stopped short, glancing at Mom before crouching down to start making a snowball.

“It’s nice to find our inner child.”

Dad…

Soon, the atmosphere shifted to snowman making. Hanul also started making a snowball with a smile, and Jeong So-yeon, after some hesitation, joined Ara to make a snowman.

“Me too…!”

“Let’s make one together.”

Seon-ah quickly joined Ara and Jeong So-yeon, starting to make a snowman cheerfully.

In the meantime, I began organizing the tasks for today.

‘I’ve borrowed an artifact that emits light, but I need to set up the greenhouse first. Peppers will have to wait…’

Therefore, making soy sauce bricks came first. I had already harvested and stored all the beans. Additionally, I had gathered the tools and materials needed to make soy sauce bricks through the guild.

‘It should be all here.’

Feeling pleased, I looked at the space-expanding artifact and observed the nearly finished snowmen.

“Wow! It has a carrot nose!”

“Finished! It looks so cute!”

Unlike the giant carrot snowman we made the day before, this time Ara’s team made a proper snowman. They used branches from the World Tree for arms, tomatoes for eyes, and a carrot for the nose.

“Snap!”

Ara ran over, grabbed a straw hat, and placed it on the snowman. With that, the snowman looked complete.

“Wow, did our Ara make this?”

“Yes! What did the Great Lord make?”

“Grandma made a small one.”

“Ooh! It’s cute!”

Mother had made a tiny snowman that fit in the palm of her hand, paired with one made by Father.

“Ara, do you want to have it?”

“Can I really have it?!”

“Of course!”

Ara carefully took the snowman with trembling hands. What fit in Mother’s hand took up both of Ara’s hands.

“Aw, it’s so cute…”

Ara moved cautiously, as if holding a precious little creature. Everyone watched her fondly.

“Kyu-seong, Kyu-seong! Th-th-this!”

“Oh, yes, Ara. It’s a cute snowman.”

“Wh-what should I do with it?”

Seeing Ara’s uncertainty, I couldn’t help but pick her up and hold her. Even then, Ara was careful not to hurt the snowman in her hands.

“Shall we place it on the roof of the building where you keep your hats? It can guard your hats.”

“Ooh!”

Ara, impressed by the idea, followed me to the building where she stored her hats. The building was built to her height, so I had to bend halfway to enter. But this time, I just lifted Ara up to place the tiny snowman on the roof.

“Take good care of my hats.”

Ara gently patted the snowman and then raised her arms in a cheer.

“I’m hungry!”

“Shall we eat something then?”

It was about time for a meal. Let’s eat first before making the soy sauce bricks.

“Food! To think I can eat Kyu-seong’s food in a place like this!”

Hanul, who was making a lumpy muscle sculpture—probably trying to make a self-portrait—quickly ran over. Jeong So-yeon also looked at me with eager eyes.

“Let’s eat before we work!”

“Kyu-seong, did you have something to do? We hope we’re not interrupting…”

“Oh, it’s nothing much. Just making some soy sauce bricks. It’s not particularly difficult or time-consuming.”

Hanul’s expression stiffened at the mention of soy sauce bricks. He cautiously approached and asked,

“Today’s the day to make soy sauce bricks?”

“Would you like to help?”

“Can I?”

“Of course.”

I had already familiarized myself with the process, and it wasn’t difficult. The only downside was that it took some time.

‘Even if we finish shaping them today, the fermentation will take over two weeks… If we succeed in cultivating the peppers in the meantime, we could make soy sauce, gochujang, and doenjang all at once.’

Assuming it didn’t fail, of course.

But I had a good feeling about this. We had already tasted the beans raw, boiled, and made into soy milk. I had a feeling they would work well for soy sauce bricks too.

“This is the storage room.”

“Wow, it’s spacious!”

My family had already seen the storage room before. It was a large building, comparable to a big logistics warehouse. Father had been surprised by this building. The other buildings showed the cute aesthetic sense of the little creatures, but this one had changed his mind.

“Choose what you want to eat from here. I’ll cook it somehow.”

“No, we have guests. I should do it.”

“No, Mom. You should rest. You’re here to enjoy yourself, so I should be the one to treat you.”

“Brother, can’t you just let Mom handle it?”

“…Do you not trust my cooking skills, little sister?”

Looking at the piles of ingredients, everyone picked what they wanted to eat. Eventually, we compromised, and I decided to cook together with my mother.

Since the available ingredients were limited, the cooking didn’t take long.

First, we made curry with carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, and Embergrill herbs.

Next, we prepared a salad with stir-fried eggplant and boiled sweet potatoes, and a now-familiar pizza. We also made sweet potato sticks that Ara loves.

“Oh? Did Dad bring some meat?”

“Yes. We have lettuce, garlic, and onions too, right? Let’s soak the onions in the dressing sauce and eat them with the meat.”

Seeing the pork belly and neck meat emerging from the fishing bag, my mouth watered at the thought of having something greasy for the first time in a while. No matter how tasty my crops are, meat is still meat.

Sizzle.

While the meat was grilling, we started eating. We heated the packed rice from the storage room and enjoyed it with curry and various side dishes.

“Gulp.”

Hanul occasionally made strange noises, but I ignored them and ate heartily. At first, I wasn’t that hungry, but as we cooked and smelled the food, my appetite quickly grew.

“Why does the food taste different today?”

“Food always tastes special when eaten outdoors!”

Jeong So-yeon tilted her head in curiosity but continued eating without stopping. Beside her, Ara was devouring 20 servings of packed rice, determined not to lose.

“Meat is ready. Try it wrapped in lettuce with garlic.”

Lettuce, garlic, and onions. These were crops I had harvested some time ago but hadn’t delivered yet due to magical variety improvement.

As a result, it was the first time Jeong So-yeon and Hanul were tasting these crops.

“Gulp.”

I could hear Hanul swallowing his saliva as he skillfully wrapped a ssam.

“It would’ve been great if you made the ssamjang too.”

“I’ll make it next time.”

Agreeing with my father, I wrapped a ssam and handed it to Ara.

“Ah~!”

“Ahhh. Yum!”

Oh, my cute little Ara! Her cheeks puffed out as she chewed, looking incredibly adorable.

“Mm!!”

“Is it good?”

“Mm! Mm!!”

“You can finish chewing before talking.”

Ara’s mouth never stopped moving. Finally, Hanul took a big bite of his ssam.

“Mmm~!!!”

His reaction was priceless. Given his usual enthusiastic reactions, it wasn’t surprising, but I was eager to try it myself. My lettuce and garlic with meat! I should make a ssam for myself too!

Alon already had some understanding of why the nobles blatantly ignored him.

“Because all the rumors have finally died down.”

Until now, the nobles had feared Alon because they believed he was the mastermind behind taking down Avalon, which had controlled the vast underworld of the East alongside Leo.

However, the nobles no longer considered Alon to be the mastermind. After he became a count, he had done nothing significant for several years.

The Palatio Count family, from the time of Alon’s grandfather, had always been known as a notorious household that never failed to wield influence in the underworld. The Palatio family had consistently dominated the Eastern underworld, though the degree of their control varied over time.

But ever since Alon became the count, the Palatio family no longer exerted influence in the underworld. As a result, the current Eastern underworld was now divided and devoured by packs of wolves that used to scavenge for the leftover crumbs outside the domain governed by the Palatio Count.

Furthermore, the power of the Palatio Count family had also weakened, which was natural. The power they wielded up until now had mostly been fueled by the wealth generated from the underworld. However, since Alon became count, he no longer used money to maintain power. His desired life was not one of grand success in the underworld, but rather, a comfortable and prosperous life that any noble could enjoy.

In other words, he had already achieved what he wanted.

However, by completely withdrawing from the underworld, rumors began to spread among the nobles.

Some speculated that perhaps the current Count Palatio wasn’t a mastermind at all, but merely someone who became count by chance.

As time passed and Alon continued to do nothing, the rumor gradually became accepted as truth.

Eventually, Alon’s reputation had devolved into that of a “lucky fool who happened to become count in the place of the real mastermind.”

Of course, there were still a few nobles who remained suspicious of Alon, but even they had begun to agree with the spreading rumors.

After all, it didn’t make sense that Alon, if he truly had the power to destroy Avalon in a single day, would not have used that power until now.

In any case, Alon had somewhat expected this kind of treatment, but he hadn’t anticipated that people would go out of their way to mock him like this.

Alon looked up at the two nobles, whose faces radiated slyness. He didn’t recognize either of them.

However, based on the crest engraved on their carriage, it was easy to tell that one was from the Crylde Count family, and the other from the Edolon Count family.

‘They both look old enough, but isn’t this too childish?’

Alon laughed to himself as he noted how aged their faces were.

He quickly understood why the two nobles had come all this way just to mock him.

‘…Ah, I see. This is a gathering of the victims.’

The Palatio family, notorious as they were, had also been a powerful family in the underworld. As a result, they naturally provided benefits to the surrounding families but also exploited them beyond necessity.

The families that were frequently treated like tools were none other than the Crylde Count family and the Edolon Count family.

To summarize the current situation, these families, who had suffered under the Palatio family, were now venting their grievances on Alon.

Of course, it wasn’t Alon but Leo, the first son of the count family, who had exploited them.

In short, Alon had no real reason to be the target of such mockery.

But to the two nobles who were eagerly mocking him, what mattered wasn’t that he was Alon but that he was the Count of Palatio.

“All those underworld forces you had, did they vanish because you couldn’t manage them properly?”

“Looks like you haven’t been taking care of your carriage properly either. Would you like to borrow some money?”

The two counts, like anonymous trolls commonly found on online communities, made every effort to scratch at Alon.

“Hmm.”

Alon briefly thought, ‘This is kind of annoying’, but he chose to follow his reason rather than his instincts.

If he were to fight now, he could easily crush the two nobles before him—maybe not slaughter them, but leave them beaten to a pulp. However, doing so would only complicate things. The moment he fought with them, Alon would have to leave the gathering and move separately. And that might lead to unnecessary trouble, like running into bandits.

Clearly, responding to their provocations was exactly what they wanted.

‘There’s no need to entertain these fools,’ Alon decided to ignore them.

He wasn’t stupid enough to fall into such an obvious trap.

That day, Alon ate two ears of corn, using the jeers from the two counts as background music.

‘Delicious.’

The roasted corn tasted even better in the slightly chilly weather.

‘It would’ve been nice to have some butter,’ Alon mused, staring absentmindedly at the moonlit sky.

***

For the next few days, the uncomfortable coexistence continued.

Every evening, Count Crylde and Count Edolon would emerge to hurl their mocking remarks, and every time, Alon pretended not to care, brushing off their words as if they were nothing.

The one who ignores and the one who tries desperately not to be ignored. Naturally, the one who ignored always won.

Alon had deeply internalized one of the life lessons he had learned from a certain online community: ‘Don’t feed the trolls.’

At least in this place, no one could beat him at that game.

Of course, after several days of this, other nobles began to mock Alon as well, whispering that he lacked dignity as a noble or scoffing at him for staying silent under the insults of Crylde and Edolon.

But despite this, Count Crylde and Count Edolon, who had been the ones persistently mocking him, were not feeling particularly satisfied.

“Damn it,” growled Count Crylde.

“This is absurd…”

Count Crylde frowned as he looked at Alon from a distance. Even though they had been mocking him, they were the ones being ignored, which was naturally infuriating.

But after a moment of their sour mood, they exchanged low whispers.

“Did you confirm?”

“Yes, and it seems like he has no additional guards.”

In truth, the reason the two counts had openly mocked Alon wasn’t just to vent their frustrations. It was also to assess his security.

“…Even with an artifact to secretly check, there was nothing. It’s just that foolish brat and that rogue knight sitting next to him.”

“So the rumors are true after all.”

“It seems certain. If he had any forces, he wouldn’t be moving around alone.”

“Then we can proceed with the plan.”

The reason the two counts had been investigating Alon was because they were planning to expand into the underworld.

They were well aware that Alon had no interest in the underworld, and that, as a result, it had become overrun by various packs of scavengers. While the rumors about Alon were already widely accepted, the two counts—having been tormented by the Palatio family for so long—wanted to confirm the truth for themselves.

They needed to be sure that Alon truly had no power left.

After days of checking and confirming that Alon had no personal guards, a smile spread across their faces.

“The gods are smiling upon us.”

“Indeed. Who would’ve thought we’d get a chance to step into the underworld?”

While most nobles hesitated to enter the underworld, these two were different. Having once acted as lackeys for the Palatio Count family, they knew full well just how astronomical the wealth circulating within the underworld was.

They were well aware of how sweet the taste of power from that realm could be.

Now that it seemed the Palatio family had truly become a hollow shell, the two spoke excitedly, as if they had already conquered the underworld.

In truth, it wasn’t impossible for them to seize control of the underworld if they joined forces. After all, the reason they hadn’t been able to do so before was not due to a lack of power, but because they had feared the Palatio Count family.

Thus, after their lengthy discussion, they turned their attention back to Alon.

“…If we take control of the ‘back,’ we should give that fool a gift, don’t you think?”

“That’s an excellent idea. There’s a limit to how much one can ignore others.”

“He’s probably acting this way because he doesn’t understand how dangerous the world can be. We’ll have to teach him.”

“Count Crylde has such a fine personality.”

The two counts, wearing fishy grins that were far from noble, as if they had done nothing wrong, were confident that the moment they had been waiting for would come soon.

Just as the two were about to rejoin the camp where the other nobles were gathered after finishing their private conversation,

“Monsters!”

The event happened suddenly. Under the cover of darkness, monsters appeared.

It was as if they had been lying in ambush, waiting silently, until a soldier spotted them by chance and shouted.

At that moment, monstrous cries echoed from within the forest, as if on cue.

Immediately, the mercenaries and knights, as if rehearsed, drew their weapons to protect the nobles.

And then—

“Wizard, give us light!”

A wizard, extravagantly brought along by a noble purely for boasting purposes at this Grand Church event, responded to the knight’s command and cast an orb of light into the sky.

In an instant—

The mercenaries and knights, who had been noisy just moments earlier, fell silent.

What they saw when the light from the wizard illuminated the dark forest were goblins.

Goblins are commonly found in forests. With the strength of a child, they are not dangerous monsters for anyone other than rookie mercenaries.

Though the rusty swords and bows they wield can be dangerous, they pose little threat to seasoned mercenaries and knights.

Goblins only become troublesome when their numbers swell, but even with dozens of them, they can still be easily driven off.

However—

“…This is insane…”

If their numbers are enough to fill the forest before them, then they are undoubtedly a threat to the knights and mercenaries.

Moreover, what heightened the tension for the knights was that the goblins before them were far from ordinary.

“…What on earth is that?”

A knight’s voice, laced with both fear and confusion, was directed at the sight of the goblins.

The problem wasn’t just that they were goblins—it was their grotesque appearance.

Purple crystals were growing all over their bodies, including their heads, as if they had been afflicted by some kind of plague.

To make matters worse—

“Wait, isn’t that Mark?”

Among the horde of goblins, the body of a seasoned mercenary who had been assigned to external surveillance for precautionary measures was being devoured savagely.

“Krrk—”

In the hands of a massive goblin was what remained of Mark’s body.

The mercenaries who saw this sight—

“This… this can’t be happening…”

—felt a rising wave of fear within them.

Mark, the mutilated corpse in front of them, was a veteran mercenary who could easily handle dozens of goblins on his own.

The fact that he had been killed without even being able to report the approach of this massive goblin horde suggested one thing to the mercenaries:

The mutated goblins before them were anything but ordinary.

The knights, who were holding their weapons alongside the mercenaries, also recognized that this was a dire situation.

Even if there were only hundreds of goblins, this fight would be incredibly unfavorable for the knights.

Individually, they might manage, but the knights had nobles to protect now.

And goblins were cunning monsters, capable of easily exploiting that vulnerability.

While the mercenaries seemed to be paralyzed with fear at the sight of the goblins’ strange appearance and Mark’s death, the knights who could sense magic were aware of something more.

They realized that the goblins before them were imbued with magic power.

Even a small amount of magic within a monster significantly enhances its physical abilities, and the knights understood this well.

Just as the knights were grimacing at the goblins’ bizarre howls and their impending charge—

Thud!

A wall of stones and rubble suddenly rose from the midst of the goblin horde.

All eyes were instantly drawn to it.

The wizard, who had cast the light spell, recognized that the wall was a “Rock Wall,” a third-tier spell.

As the translucent barrier of a second-tier shield formed beyond the wall, the knights’ expressions shifted from despair to confusion.

The goblins’ malicious stares were now entirely focused on the wall.

“Enhance!”

A calm voice echoed through the air.

And then—

“Compress.”

With a loud cracking sound, the translucent sphere rapidly shrank, distorting the stone wall as it collapsed inward.

Thud, thud—

In the ensuing silence, the sound of footsteps drew the attention of the knights and mercenaries to one direction.

A man was approaching. Even in this life-threatening situation, he appeared completely unfazed, walking with an indifferent expression.

The nobles and knights quickly realized that the man was Count Palatio.

“Vacuum.”

As soon as his lips moved again, the round shield transformed into a rough, rock-like shape, about the size of a soccer ball you might find by the roadside.

And then—

“Return to origin.”

With Alon’s final words, the bracelet on his wrist began to emit a faint gray light.

Boom—!!!

The compressed stones exploded outward like a shotgun blast, tearing dozens of goblins to pieces.

It all happened in an instant.

The nobles, knights, and mercenaries stood in stunned silence, their mouths agape as they watched the magic-infused goblins get shredded into mere lumps of flesh.

Among them, Count Crylde and Count Edolon’s eyes widened as if they were about to tear apart.

With all eyes now on Alon, he simply said:

“Stop standing there in a daze and get ready.”

His voice was calm as he looked ahead.

…The knights and mercenaries, as if mesmerized, raised their swords.

The fear that had been spreading in their hearts had, as if by magic, vanished entirely.

Round 124

Prev | TOC | Next

The day after the shaved ice party and the snowman contest.

I came out of the dungeon and waited for the guild staff I was supposed to meet.

“Hmm, hmm~!”

Ara sat next to me on a chair, swinging her feet that didn’t touch the ground, humming a tune. In her mouth was a straw stuck in a chocolate drink.

“Is it good?”

“Yeah!”

“Can we grow cocoa too?”

Come to think of it, I had never thought about growing fruit trees. There are so many delicious things in the world, what was I doing?

Later, I should set a day to plant some fruits. Right now, the only things I had were Layla and strawberries (which were technically vegetables).

Ding~!

“Oh, Mr. Kyu-seong!”

“You must have had a hard time coming all the way here.”

The staff member who always came directly whenever there was something to deliver arrived. Feeling grateful, I tried to hand over the homemade soy milk I made, when I heard a familiar voice.

“Ha ha ha! I saw it all, Kyu-seong! Are you giving us some too?”

“Huh?! Brother? So-yeon, you’re here too?”

Unexpected people had come along.

With Kang Hanul and Jeong So-yeon, the two team leaders of Ara Hongryeon here, who was doing the work?

“Today is a vacation day.”

“Seok-jun gave us a special day off! Haha!”

It was really unexpected people who showed up.

Thanks to them, while I was briefly stunned, Ara, who had been drinking her chocolate drink, jumped off the chair and ran over.

“He! He! He!”

“Ha ha ha!”

Seeing Ara laughing with her chocolate drink, Hanul laughed the same way. Jeong So-yeon also burst into a small laugh seeing them.

“Oh! That looks delicious, Ara!”

“Do you want some?”

“Ha ha! I want some soy milk!”

“Soy milk! Kyu-seong Kyu-seong has it!”

I barely regained my composure and asked the two of them.

“If you’re on vacation, why didn’t you rest at home?”

“Uh? Kyu-seong, didn’t you want to see us?”

“Oh, no, that’s not what I meant…”

“Hehe. Just kidding. Actually, I came directly to deliver a message from the guild master.”

“I just tagged along! Ha ha!”

Just as I was about to receive the supplies from the guild staff today and start making soybeans, Hanul came along.

Now that it’s like this, should I invite both of them to the dungeon?

“The items are here.”

“Oh, thank you. Here, take this. You always work so hard.”

“Thank you, Mr. Kyu-seong.”

“Oh, and could you also take care of this?”

“Of course.”

I handed over the specifications for the greenhouse I had looked into beforehand to the staff. It was a metal frame to be installed in the field. The staff soon confirmed the metal frame and handed over the space expansion artifact before leaving. I just had to return this artifact on the specified date.

“By the way, what is the message from the guild master?”

“Kyu-seong, you asked about buying this land last time, right?”

“Yes? Yes, I did.”

“Here, this is for you.”

Jeong So-yeon handed me a few documents. With curiosity, I read the papers.

“Oh, no way…”

“We took it from the Terror Guild. Our guild master did.”

This document, to put it simply, was a land deed.

The entire area I had mentioned.

“If you just stamp it, the mountain of the dungeon you’re in will be yours.”

I was dumbfounded by the unexpected gift.

Looking at the size and price of the land on the map, even though it was just a barren mountain, it was expensive.

Moreover, I knew that selling such a mountain required several complicated procedures, but the documents seemed to indicate that everything had already been resolved.

“No, how, how did this happen?”

I was so flustered that my words kept coming out wrong.

Seeing my reaction, Hanul laughed again, and Jeong So-yeon smiled warmly.

“He! He! He! Kyu-seong Kyu-seong is acting weird!”

While I was ruffling Ara’s hair as she sipped her drink through the straw, Jeong So-yeon answered.

“There was a meeting between guild masters the other day. At that meeting, Johann, the guild master of the Terror Guild, offered several conditions in exchange for receiving an item from our guild. One of those conditions was the land you just received.”

“Oh…”

“Soon, the guild master will contact you separately. The contract with the Terror Guild hasn’t been finalized yet, and we need to coordinate with you as well.”

“What? Then, even though the contract isn’t finalized, this land is…”

“I heard that Johann showed goodwill.”

Who gives away land worth 20,000 pyeong out of goodwill? Moreover, although it was a mountain, its appraised value was an average of 550,000 won per pyeong.

In short, it was worth over 10 billion won.

Just giving that away for free?

…Well, if it’s Johann, it could be possible.

Johann Rothschild.

He was a famous tycoon even before creating the Terror Guild. His family was known for their wealth, and he was someone who could consider 10 billion won as trivial.

“Uh, can I make a quick call?”

“Of course.”

I immediately called home. My family was supposed to come to the dungeon today to make soybean paste, so I needed to ask them to bring my seal as well.

– Huh? Kyu-seong? I was just about to leave.

“Ah, mom. Could you bring my seal too?”

– Seal? Why? Your registered seal?

“Yes. I need to stamp some documents.”

– Alright. I’ll bring it.

“Oh, and we have two guests here, is that okay?”

– Guests? Of course!

As soon as I finished the brief call, Ara, who had already finished her drink, started bouncing around.

“Is the overlord overlord coming? Is he coming?”

“Yes. They’re coming now.”

I then spoke to the two who were waiting.

“Are you busy today?”

“Huh? No. This is my last appointment for the day.”

“I have plenty of time, that’s why I came along. Haha!”

Hearing their responses, I cautiously asked.

“Then, would you like to visit our dungeon? My family will be there too.”

“Your dungeon?!”

“Dungeon!!”

The two, who were startled, looked at each other and then turned back to me, nodding vigorously.

“Of course, we’ll go!”

“I’ve always wanted to see it! The land of flowing crops!”

The land doesn’t flow with crops… but okay.

I awkwardly smiled at the two who seemed to have high expectations and waited for my family.

After about 20 minutes, my parents and Seon-ah arrived.

“Oh, So-yeon, you’re here?”

“Hello again, ma’am. Hehe.”

Since they had already gotten familiar with each other during the orphanage event, the greetings were not awkward. After that, we immediately started hiking towards the dungeon, and I received the seal from my mother.

“Is this related to work?”

“Well… sort of? Once I stamp this, all this mountain will be mine.”

I stopped in my tracks.

My family, who had been walking along just fine, all came to a halt.

Ara looked around and mumbled at the sudden action.

“Why did we stop?!”

Seon-ah was the first to regain her composure and asked with wide eyes.

“What do you mean by that?”

“So-yeon and Hanul came because of that. They brought the land deed and the documents I need to stamp.”

“So, you’re saying how did you end up owning the land!”

“The Terror Guild gave it to me.”

Even to me, that sounded out of context.

But what could I do? It was the truth.

“It’s not a scam, right?”

“No, dad. The company is doing well, and my abilities have helped enough to make this happen.”

Even without the Terror Guild’s goodwill, I had intended to buy the mountain where my dungeon is located. With the money I’d earn from the contract with the Skyscraper Guild.

But thanks to how things turned out, I saved that money. I can use it later to build roads and structures here.

“Kyu-seong is a very fortunate person. This is nothing. So you can rest easy. Ha ha!”

“Hmm, hmm.”

Dad still seemed skeptical, but he let it go for now.

Soon, we arrived in front of the dungeon, and Kang Hanul and Jeong So-yeon looked at the entrance with sparkling eyes.

“So, the crops we’ve been eating all this time came from here?!”

“Ah, this is moving!”

If I had known they would be this happy, I would have invited them sooner. It was a pity that it was winter and I couldn’t show them the usual scenery.

“Ahem!”

As always, Ara raised her nose and stood in front of Kang Hanul and Jeong So-yeon.

“I will guide you.”

“Oh, Ara is going to guide us?”

Jeong So-yeon responded as if looking at a cute younger sister, making Ara lift her nose higher and nod solemnly.

“I will guide you. You must follow closely!”

“Ha ha ha! Yes! We will follow our Ara closely!”

“Trust only me!”

Everyone watched Ara, who was leading confidently, with fondness. She thought she was being dignified, but it was also cute.

“Be careful when you come in! Hanul is tall, so you might hit your head!”

“Yes! I will be careful!”

Ara entered first, and we followed one by one.

The view of the slime dungeon, which resembled a natural cave, appeared, and a rookie slime rolling around in a small vegetable garden greeted us warmly.

Squirm-!

Jeong So-yeon and Kang Hanul, who were visiting for the first time, looked around in delight.

“This is…!”

“It’s a field! There is a field here!”

They reacted like children to every little thing.

Thanks to their increasing reactions, Ara’s shoulders and nose were rising higher and higher.

“Ahem! This is the dungeon!”

“Oh! Yes!”

“This is called a garden. A small field!”

“Oh, so tomatoes come from here!”

Right now, it was a 100-pyeong garden only growing tomatoes.

Carrots and Layla were being grown anew in the Dungeon of Gluttony.

“So, where are the other crops we’ve seen?”

“Ahem! Follow me!”

Ara, looking particularly pleased, walked again with a confident stride. My family, having experienced this once already, smiled and watched the round figure of Ara leading the way.

“Oh, there’s a ladder!”

Come to think of it, I should replace this ladder soon.

I’ll use the slimes to build it into a staircase.

“Ohhhh!!”

“Wow!”

As we climbed down the ladder, Kang Hanul and Jeong So-yeon widened their eyes at the sight of the 1,000-pyeong field, ten times the size of the garden.

“It’s huge! Everything is being grown here!”

“Look at this! The slimes are harvesting bell peppers. They’re so cute!”

The slimes, who were in the middle of harvesting bell peppers, showed interest in the new visitors and presented them with bell peppers.

“Oh, are these for us?”

“Yes, you can eat them.”

“Ha ha! Freshly harvested crops from Kyu-seong!”

The two of them happily ate the bell peppers.

Ara watched them with her mouth watering, then noticed my gaze and pretended to be indifferent.

“I-I’m fine! I’m guiding you!”

“If you want to eat too, join us.”

“Can I really?”

I nodded at Ara, who was blushing slightly, and she picked a bell pepper herself and ate it eagerly.

“Shall we eat too?”

“Sure!”

It suddenly turned into a harvesting experience, but everyone enjoyed picking and tasting the bell peppers.

When everyone was captivated by the sweet taste of the bell peppers, which had a faint bitterness, Ara spoke with satisfaction.

“Now, let’s move on! We’ve played a lot!”

“Move on? This isn’t the end?”

Jeong So-yeon looked at me with a puzzled expression.

I smiled at her and said, “Ara will guide us.”

“There’s more to see! This place is like an onion; it has many layers!”

“Come to think of it, there are no onions here?”

Jeong So-yeon, who had been harvesting bell peppers and looking around the field, finally noticed.

Then, their faces filled with anticipation.

“The best is yet to come!”

“Ohhh!!”

With Ara’s shout, we continued on our way.

Strike 196

Prev I TOC I Next

The members of Hyun’s Forge were remarkable. To be honest, they performed far better than Hyun-soo had expected. Thanks to their ability to reach the legendary level, albeit briefly, they created this current opportunity. However, another crisis arose. Even in the face of this life-or-death moment, Hyun-soo moved to stop them.

A sentence-type title. A title granted only to Hyun-soo in Ares. And the skill Counter (反). It had the power to temporarily combine hidden artifacts within it. It combined two artifacts into a single artifact. However, one must remember that one of them was Hyun’s masterpiece, the Supreme Sword, the best long sword in existence. The other, although reborn and fully established as a debuff, was a transcendent Twin Dragon Sword with perfect attack power and grand benefits.

The moment the two artifacts came together, a massive heat haze arose.

[This is the most perfect combination.]

[It is recognized as the most powerful single sword in the world.]

[All effects are improved by 6%.]

Then came a declaration of history:

-Chinese viewers mocked and criticized us.

-It was an unbearable insult as a citizen of the Republic of Korea.

-But Crazy Rookie relieved our uncontrollable emotions.

-I see the name Crazy Rookie vividly etched in front of me.

-I just confirmed that the number of subscribers to Hyun’s Forge has significantly increased…

-The key is the future. Will we endure, or won’t we?

150 Chinese users. 81 Korean users. The difference in power was significant. Korean users, already exhausted to the limit, appeared everywhere. Crossing the castle gates meant imminent fall.

Next to Hyun-soo stood Hwarang Guild Master Lee Hwan.

“It’s already been 7 hours of rental time, a whopping 1.4 billion. It’s too expensive. I hope you’ll give us a discount next time.”

What is he talking about?

With a small smile, he showed the legendary grade Twin Dragon Sword.

“The whole world said our country wouldn’t last 4 hours, but it’s already been over 10 hours, thanks in large part to Hyun’s Forge.”

Lee Hwan wasn’t someone who would hesitate to answer yes if asked whether he was a moral person. But at this moment, he acknowledged the contribution.

“Can you tell Hyun? Thank you.”

The message was well conveyed. Around 50 Korean users joined in.

“Let’s go.”

[The sentence begins.]

Hyun-soo, aware that he faced the greatest crisis yet, ran forward with a newly forged sword. As the Chinese users laughed at Hyun-soo wielding a black-stained grand blade, sentences granting him the power to overcome the crisis were inscribed in the sky.

[Even if it breaks]

[You can increase the level of one desired skill by 2 levels.]

The Chinese users were elated.

“Kihyahhahaha!”

“Finally, it’s falling!”

“Wizards, bombard them!”

“Exhausted Korean users, we can wipe them out with a single bombing spell, right?”

At the same time, the wizards began casting. The benefit of increasing the desired skill level was greater than expected. It didn’t have to be a powerful force to create a miracle. Just like this.

[Pull]

[Instantly pulls 5 enemies towards you.]

The wizards casting their spells were startled. In an instant, their view changed.

“Ah, hello?”

The bewildered wizards could see Hyun-soo glaring at them. Hyun-soo, who had dragged his blackened grand blade behind him, swung it with all his might.

Skaaaaaaak-

-Five wizard users killed in one stroke!

-This happened in an instant!

-Five wizards in the 380-level range, preparing wide-area spells, were sliced in half in one strike!

Hyun-soo could see the approaching knight users. Their armor stood out. Artifacts closest to legendary. Such armor could be seen on the approaching knight users.

At this moment, Hyun-soo realized that the true strong ones had been watching from the sidelines. They had stepped back and let the weaker ones fight, waiting to make a grand appearance at the last moment.

The most excellently crafted artifacts concentrated on the remaining ones were proof of that. Those in the 370-380 level range, boasting excellent artifacts, couldn’t help but be arrogant. Seventeen approaching close-combat knights. Once again, a sentence was inscribed in the air.

[Never Back down]

[Increases sword’s cutting power by 215% and destructive power by 197%.]

Another added fact was that Hyun-soo’s cutting power was already excellent due to the Gauntlets of Calamity’s enhancement. Additionally, although the Twin Dragon Sword and the Supreme Sword had combined for one minute, the only advantage of using the current Twin Dragon Sword was that it possessed the highest attack power in Ares.

One user swung his sword upward from below.

‘Got him…!’

Crazy Rookie had performed outstandingly. Killing such a person would significantly increase the chances of becoming MVP. He would steal a significant portion of his contribution. The user was soon horrified.

Kwaaaang-

The moment the grand blade struck his sword, it lost balance, and his sword slammed into the ground.

[You are stunned.]

[A strong impact spreads throughout your body.]

Tzzzzt-

Unable to hide his confusion at the sensation spreading through his entire body, he quickly stood up and, seeing the grand blade being pulled back, smirked.

“This is armor closest to legendary, you son of a b****…”

Mockingly spitting out a line he’d seen in a Korean movie, he was taken aback.

Chhheooook-!

The sound when the grand blade struck the armor.

[Your armor’s durability has significantly decreased.]

Rattle rattle rattle

The armor literally broke apart. The same armor that didn’t even get scratched when fighting users of the same level.

‘This top-tier unique armor…?’

The close-combat users, about to rush at Hyun-soo, hesitated. A strong telekinetic force held them back. At that moment, Hyun-soo’s grand blade rapidly broke the users’ armor.

“Huh?”

“Ugh…?”

“What is this…?”

When the armor of high-rankers, whose defense and HP far surpassed that of regular users, broke, exposing their skin, they were bewildered.

“Ghost Step.”

Sga ga ga ga ga ga gack-!

As his afterimage was imprinted, the Chinese users were bewildered.

Passing through the broken parts of their armor, their bodies were being sliced in half by something heavy.

‘This is insane…’

Soon, the Chinese users started firing their skills wildly.

Boom boom boom boom boom boom-

A thick cloud of dust rose into the air.

The destructive power was enough to hunt even a formidable boss monster in an instant.

No matter how strong a single tiger is, it can’t withstand a pack of wolves.

However, they were unaware of one thing.

Skaak-

Amidst the dust, the sound of allies being cut could be heard.

‘What is that?’

Blood-red orbs appeared in various places in the air.

[Blood Absorption]

[Recovers HP equivalent to the damage dealt and activates with a 6% chance.]

[HP drops below 36%.]

[HP recovers by 16%.]

A tiger emerged through the dust, biting the wolves that had used their skills.

Crunch crunch crunch

What they didn’t know was that, although the tiger might fall to the pack of wolves, it could still bite them.

Another sentence was inscribed.

[By all means]

[HP increases by 20%, and defense increases by 25%.]

Flaaash-

Surrounded by bright light, he slashed forward with his grand blade.

‘I want to become the MVP.’

Stab

A Chinese user with terrifying attack power capable of piercing through the Armor of Calamity was cut down.

[13 consecutive hits.]

Slash slash slash slash slash!

The result of combining two swords caused the user to be torn apart.

“A m-monster…”

“Is he really just level 330?”

Hyun-soo at this moment was beyond a mere 330-level player.

His stats were already on par with those of current 380-390 level users.

In addition, he wielded the combination of the strongest swords in existence.

However, there was an unfortunate matter.

[The poison of the Poison King spreads.]

The poison he suffered from the Poison King Liu lingered even after a long time.

[Two of your strongest skills are restricted.]

These were specifically Bond and Flame.

But when Hyun-soo transcended with the two artifacts, he momentarily surpassed himself.

Ska ska ska-

‘I don’t want to be remembered as weak anymore.’

Fragments of his memory flashed like a panorama.

Driven by the desire and will to someday become a king, he cut down his enemies.

The Chinese users, judging Hyun-soo to be the most dangerous person, surged towards him.

The final sentence was inscribed.

[Win]

[All attack power temporarily increases by 21%.]

‘I will definitely…!’

At that moment, Hyun-soo’s eyes shook.

Stab

Stab!

Two weapons pierced through Hyun-soo’s body.

“Even knowing we’re here, you went on a rampage like a mad dog.”

“This is good for us, Mr. Pond. Thanks to his performance, killing him will make us shine even more.”

[You possess Asnium.]

[HP has dropped below 10%.]

[HP recovers to 15%.]

Hyun-soo, who quickly recovered, gritted his teeth and tried to escape from the two.

But Liu, who had withdrawn his weapon first, stabbed him once again.

[HP drops below 6%.]

[You are afflicted with Dizziness.]

[You are afflicted with Confusion.]

Liu, the Poison King, who had pierced Hyun-soo with a spear as if skewering him, gave a sly smile.

“Do you know that Pond and I haven’t even used our legendary artifacts yet? Oh, wait. I just did when I stabbed you.”

It was damage that clearly defied common sense.

Pond clicked his tongue in disgust, as if looking at an insect.

“Let’s leave this one to die last. Just toss him aside for now. Oh, right.”

Pond whispered.

“You need to know your place. There are things you can do and things you can’t, no matter how much you rampage like a son of a b****.”

Hyun-soo, impaled like a skewer, was thrown outside the castle.

[You cannot resist.]

Hyun-soo, who had fallen outside the castle gate, clenched his teeth.

‘I have to get up.’

Hyun-soo’s mind began to fade due to the confusion status effect.

However, his body lost strength, and he collapsed.

Hyun-soo’s consciousness kept fading in and out.

Desperately trying to stay awake, Hyun-soo saw the Korean users being pushed back by the Chinese users.

‘How did I come this far…’

There were those who believed in him and followed him, and he also had new goals.

But the confusion status effect caused another blackout.

Thud

Hyun-soo, on his knees, kept opening and closing his eyes.

-The fall is imminent.

-Chinese users are rushing towards the fortress gate and the flag after 9 hours…

-They have finally reached the barrier…

Hyun-soo’s mind sank back into darkness.

Then,

-Wh-what’s this?

-Something unexpected is happening.

-This place, where the Continental War is taking place, is a small island on the Asgan continent…

-With a strong barrier in place…

Kuuuuung

-A-a massive tremor is shaking the entire arena…

-The Chinese users are breaking through the barrier without a care…

Kwaaak

-I-it’s torn!

-What is this? Why is the barrier…!

With a flash, Hyun-soo came to his senses and saw a shadow cast over him.

From his kneeling position, he slowly raised his head, his pupils trembling.

A moment he had waited for so long.

A voice he desperately wanted to hear again.

“Hyun-soo.”

A familiar man, smiling softly while looking at him, breathing heavily.

“Stand up.”

His father, Kang Hyun-tae, stood before him.

Hyun-soo couldn’t think of anything else.

He simply hugged his father with all his might.

“When you get involved in things beyond your means, trouble is inevitable.”

This was something Aiden’s father, a small-time thief from a back alley with a quick wit, would always drill into him.

“You’re not cut out for the big leagues, son.”

“Why not?”

“Because aside from being a small-time swindler with a knack for petty tricks, you aren’t really good at anything else, are you?”

“Why do you say that to your own son?”

“Live within your means. Don’t cause trouble by trying to swim in big waters. For people like us, being a small-time crook in the back alleys is just the right fit.”

“Can’t you at least say something encouraging to your son?”

“I’m doing that right now.”

Is that how it’s supposed to work?

At some point, Aiden himself came to accept these words, realizing that he wasn’t particularly good at anything. Average. Neither positive nor negative.

Other than occasionally pulling off small, annoying cons to survive, he was an insignificant criminal, barely memorable. Oh, but never big cons, only small and annoying ones, even for the victims. After all, even criminals have their limits.

This was evident in a conversation he once had with his younger sister.

“Why do you even bother keeping up appearances when you’re a criminal?”

“If you commit major crimes, you’ll eventually get noticed and face serious consequences. If you ever run into one of your victims, the worst it should come to is getting roughed up a bit.”

“Keep the family fed, take care of yourself, and don’t do anything that would make people hold a grudge. That’s how you live long.”

Aiden Kellermain’s life was just that. A typical, insignificant con artist.

Even after a bizarre event where he hit his head hard on the floor and awakened memories of a past life on a place called ‘Earth,’ this fact didn’t change much.

These words appeared in a white, rectangular box floating in front of him, confirming that he was a character in a game world.

After several days of contemplation, he came to a conclusion:

“Is it really necessary to live an extraordinary life?”

Main stories, special abilities—these would be enticing for someone who wanted to stand out. But doing great things often leads to great dangers. Living safely might be uneventful, but it’s also not dangerous.

So, Aiden decided to stay in his place. A petty criminal among petty criminals, committing crimes that were too insignificant to catch the attention of the authorities. His victims felt more pity than hatred for him.

And when living such a life, you’re bound to avoid getting involved with certain people.

[-Lord Noel is entering the Arc de Triomphe!]

[All citizens of the Empire are requested to greet her with thunderous applause!]

At that moment, a woman on the old TV screen proved to be one such person.

“Oh dear,” he sighed, watching the screen.

The sight of the woman riding her horse through the Arc de Triomphe was enough to elicit such a reaction.

Hair as black as obsidian, as if it absorbed all the light around it, contrasting with her snow-white skin and eyes that gleamed with a red hue so intense it wouldn’t be strange to describe them as dazzling.

Some even called her the incarnation of Carva, the empire’s chief deity and goddess of war. She wasn’t just “beautiful”—her presence exuded an aura.

“… The title of the Goddess of War does suit her.”

Noel Astria Simus, the greatest warrior since the existence of the empire. The four lionhead medals pinned to her chest provided ample evidence of that.

The Lionhearted Medal is the highest honor awarded by the imperial military. Considering the usual criteria for such honors, receiving four of the highest distinction implies that she is a human-shaped monster capable of single-handedly altering the course of a war. She could crush rocks with her fists, fly through the sky with her bare body, and, when armed, single-handedly breach fortresses. Among the “knights,” who are superhumans, she stands at the pinnacle.

She has rewritten every record in the imperial military, a talent that might only appear once in a thousand years. Her very birth was extraordinary. To someone as ordinary as Aiden, the chance to speak with her even once in his lifetime seemed impossible.

However, Aiden could add a further annotation to this assessment.

“Is she the protagonist?”

This woman was one of the key figures in the world he now found himself in—a ‘fantasy game.’ She was destined to overcome adversity and, alongside the game’s protagonist, lead the continent through an unprecedented crisis to salvation. Among the many important characters, Noel stood out with a distinct trait.

[There are rumors that Lord Noel’s marriage has caused a stir in society-]

[Just the list of candidates is said to be incredible-]

Marriage, yes. One of the most significant turning points that would determine Noel’s fate and the main storyline’s overall arc.

[Whatever the outcome, may the gods of the pantheon bless Lord Noel’s future!]

At the commentator’s words, Aiden let out a small chuckle.

“It doesn’t seem like there will be many blessings.”

Based on what he knew about the game, Lord Noel’s life would take a severe turn for the worse after her marriage. The main story would spiral into chaos around that time, and Noel herself, at this point, wouldn’t want to get close to any of the candidates.

In fact, if he remembered correctly, around this time, Noel would do anything to avoid marriage.

And honestly, such things were of little concern to Aiden. The marriage affairs of people he’d never have any reason to interact with were just topics for gossip. Whether they saved the world or got married, those were matters for the “protagonists,” not for him.

Yes, that’s certainly what he thought.

Until a few days ago.

“You’re awake.”

Now, however,

“You’re awake,” Lord Noel was saying with a soft smile.

She was so close that he could count the blemishes on her face.

Aiden looked around with a blank stare. It was clearly an unfamiliar place. After all, he had no memory of falling asleep in a dark basement with his arms tied to a chair.

As he blinked dumbly, Noel continued speaking in a calm, emotionless voice while clipping some papers together. A quick glance revealed documents with the imperial military’s watermark, detailing his personal information and a list of his “clients.”

It was clear that his entire identity had been thoroughly exposed.

“Aiden Kellermain. I’ve heard you’re quite the seasoned con artist. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“…Lord Noel?”

“Yes, I’m Noel Astria Simus. I’ve come to you with a special request.”

The emotionless voice continued, falling steadily on his ears, even as he struggled to fully grasp the situation. Why was this person here? What could she possibly want from him?

Before he could fully process the question, his mouth instinctively began to mutter a response. It was likely a reflex, a habit from his profession, where he always had to be quick to react to others’ words.

“…A request, you say?”

“Yes. As a con artist, your job is to deceive others, right? And you’re a skilled con artist. I need to deceive someone too.”

Aiden wasn’t sure if he could truly be called “skilled,” but as he mused over this, Noel spoke again.

“I’m not one for beating around the bush, so I’ll be direct.”

After a brief pause, she said,

“Let’s get married.”

Suddenly.

“For just one year, will you pretend to be my husband?”

“I want you to deceive the entire empire.”

She dropped a verbal bombshell, accompanied by an overwhelming aftermath.

“There, elf girl, instead of just staring blankly, how about showing me around your village? I’d love to explore such a beautiful place in detail.”

Even though I have intruded into the village, can’t I at least have a look around? Especially since the person I wanted to meet is right in front of me, it would be nice to get to know her better. To this, our second divine archer responded,

“…Ugh…”

She recoiled and hid her twitching ears behind a tree.

‘That’s not the reaction I expected,’ I thought, puzzled. Freesia is a key character in the southern story. Because of that, I knew her personality inside out. She should have been outgoing, the type who, even if hostile, would at least start a conversation out of curiosity.

‘Butterfly effect… No, that doesn’t make sense.’ No matter how much I stirred things up, there’s no way it could have influenced an elf girl who had been living in this secluded village. Grumbling, I drew back my hand.

“Excuse me. Don’t elves know manners? When someone greets you, at least respond.”

“Mind your manners. What’s that? You smell like monster saliva!”

Freesia peeked out again, her face full of disgust.

‘So that’s what it was.’

Indeed. After using the sandworm twice, my whole body was drenched. I had become desensitized to the smell, but Freesia wouldn’t have.

“Oops, my mistake. I was inside a sandworm’s mouth. But without doing that, I couldn’t have entered this village.”

“…I’ll pass on the handshake. Could you continue talking from there?”

“Well, since it’s come to this, can’t you use a clean spell on me?”

I sensed Tamer’s mouth dropping open, but I ignored it. Elves, by nature, are masters of magic. Even more so for high elves? They don’t even bear the ‘inefficiency’ of using both aura and magic simultaneously.

‘A ridiculously powerful race.’

Though it irritates me a bit since we’re in the same situation, what can I do? We were born with different spoons in our mouths. Anyway, Freesia is also one of those high elves. Casting a clean spell should be simple for her.

“Why should I for an intruder?”

“An intruder? Please call me an uninvited guest. And wouldn’t it be inconvenient for you as well?”

Freesia tilted her head at my response. I continued, maintaining my composure.

“As far as I know, elves have a much keener sense of smell than humans. Wouldn’t it be more troublesome for you to guide me in this state? Unless, of course, you have a liking for monster saliva smell, which I’d respect.”

“…You’re a more shameless intruder than I thought.”

“I told you, an uninvited guest.”

I shrugged, and she sighed in disbelief.

“Cleanse this defiled one, Clean.”

With her incantation, a warm light enveloped my body. Not only did I feel refreshed, but my butler’s uniform, soaked with sandworm saliva, also returned to its original state. It was as if it had just been laundered and ironed, neat with elegant blue accents on a refined monochrome base. Even the boy’s robe next to me was clean and fluffy.

“Well, I owe you one. You didn’t have to clean the boy next to me, though.”

“…M-Master.”

Well. Despite the abandoned puppy look he gave me, my mind remained unchanged.

His worth is less than this butler’s uniform. Though it was thanks to him that I managed to invade this elf village, hasn’t he outlived his usefulness now? I shooed him away as he tried to stick by my side.

“So? What brings a human here?”

“You don’t need to aim that longbow; I’ll answer honestly. Could you please lower your weapon?”

“Why should I trust you?”

‘Just as I thought.’

A sharp voice filled with suspicion came from behind a tree, but I could sense it. The deep curiosity within.

‘If it had been any other elf, they wouldn’t have bothered with a clean spell. They would’ve shot an arrow right away.’

Yes. Just like this.

-Clang!

An arrow flying towards my face was blocked by a golden trail.

“Freesia, stand down!”

“Elder!”

“To think he could deflect an arrow imbued with aura with a dagger… He’s no ordinary human.”

Several elves, appearing to be middle-aged, gathered around the tree where she was hiding. The one who sent Freesia behind him glared at me with piercing eyes. Despite his youthful appearance, indicative of an elder, he was likely several centuries old, being an elf.

“I don’t know how you bypassed the boundary stones and found our village, but surrender quietly. You are surrounded.”

To prove his point, warriors rose from the village and the surrounding thickets, all aiming their bows. Elves are warriors of the forest. This jungle village was a battlefield designed for them. Their sharp hostility pricked at my skin.

“Master, this is dangerous. It might be best to retreat for now.”

Even if rotting, he was still an executive of the Disaster Cult. The boy quickly shifted from his dazed state into a combat stance. It was truly a tense situation. Tamer, summoning mana, and the elves, aiming their bows, stood in the midst.

“Master?”

“…Do you have a death wish?”

I started walking. I could feel the arrows on the bows following my movements, but I continued forward without hesitation. Heading towards the elder, I said,

“Hmph, it seems our noble forest-dwelling race is upset with an uninvited guest.”

I sheathed the golden dagger that had deflected the arrow and spread my arms wide, completely unarmed.

“Stop. If you come any closer… you won’t be unharmed next time.”

Thunk.

With the elder’s warning, an arrow landed right at my feet. The aura-infused arrow not only embedded itself in the ground but caused a large crack.

…Crazy. If that had hit me, I’d be on my way to the afterlife.

It seemed he wasn’t called an elder for nothing. Ignoring the cold sweat running down the back of my neck, I opened my mouth.

“Ho. A warning shot? That’s quite gentlemanly of you. I thought it would hit my head or heart.”

But there was no way I could cower and tuck my tail between my legs here. What was my purpose for coming here in the first place? To understand the reason why elves and beastmen joined forces.

I had no intention of taking even a single step back until I found out. Besides, I had enough faith in myself to handle things even if they went awry.

“I, too, have come to have a civilized conversation with you all.”

“There is nothing to discuss with a human. Leave now! Do you really want an arrow in your vital point?”

I ignored the elder’s somewhat coercive command.

-Tamer, send the sandworm to the location I’m about to give you.

-What? Oh, yes! Understood!

After sending a private message to Tamer, I responded to the elder in the most gentle voice possible.

“That’s… disappointing. I came to discuss something related to the World Tree, but if you turn me away like this…”

“The World Tree?”

When the name of the deity they worship was mentioned, the elves couldn’t help but be taken aback.

“Elder, what should we do? If it’s about the World Tree…”

“Don’t waver. Who knows if it’s just a tactic to buy time.”

“Ha ha. Whether it’s a time-wasting tactic or a serious discussion, shouldn’t we listen first to find out?”

As I slowly walked past the arrow embedded in front of me and took another step forward,

“I warned you.”

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Several arrows landed right at my feet in quick succession.

“We’ll question you thoroughly later. Don’t even think about resisting. Everyone, if needed, shoot your arrows immediately. Losing an arm or two doesn’t matter.”

Indeed, he was worthy of being called an elder. Bold and decisive. However,

“Phew. Why is it that humans and other races alike always try to dominate conversations with violence?”

“Silence. If you keep talking…”

“In that case, shall I give a ‘warning’ just as you did?”

-Rumble.

If they intended to shoot arrows at me, they should have done it already. By the time they delayed, it was too late.

‘Elves are indeed soft-hearted.’

I grinned and spread my arms wide. As I finished speaking, the ground began to shake more violently. Far more than before.

Rumble, rumble, rumble!

“What the…?”

Even those who were aiming at me struggled to keep their balance. I grinned at them, though I was also toppled by the vibrations.

“It must be hard to endure. The loss of the boundary stones brings about massive earthquakes.”

“What, what did you say?!”

For that elder, it must have been a bolt from the blue. The boundary stones were essential for the elf village’s survival. They also served as protection from humans and beastmen, who were fewer in number.

“How do you like my ‘warning’?”

“You…!”

“Ah, don’t try anything foolish. The moment I lose my life, all the other boundary stones will disappear as well.”

It wasn’t a lie. The moment I was skewered by arrows, Tamer wouldn’t stand idly by.

‘If the vessel of Calamity disappears, a loyal follower who crossed boundaries would not let it go.’

Anyway,

‘This sandworm surprise attack is quite effective.’

Even though it was swimming through the ground, the elves hadn’t noticed it approaching.

It seemed appropriate to raise Tamer’s status slightly above that of my butler’s uniform.

“Damn it… What do you want?”

“I’ve told you from the beginning. I came here for a conversation.”

The elder, hearing my ‘advice,’ lowered his bowstring. I smiled at someone who understood my words.

“Let’s have a thorough discussion about our World Tree.”

***

“Wow, the water is clear and the air is fresh. Truly a nature-friendly place, befitting an elf village.”

Freesia sighed deeply as she watched the young man teasing her.

“How did I end up…”

“Didn’t the elder say that we should wait until all the elders have gathered to have a proper discussion? What’s wrong with sightseeing in the meantime?”

“That’s not what I’m asking. Why did you choose me as the guide?”

He scratched his cheek at her question.

“Well, you’re the only one among the many elves who showed me kindness. I had no other choice.”

“Kindness? Just for a clean spell…”

“Haha, as someone who can read people, I assure you, the other elves wouldn’t have even done that.”

For a moment, Freesia felt a hint of bitterness in his voice. As if he had experienced such situations firsthand.

‘What kind of experience… No, sympathizing with an intruder!’

Freesia glared at him. But he quickly returned to his playful demeanor.

“Besides, you remind me of someone dear to me, with similar hair. It just makes me feel more affectionate towards you.”

“Huh? Hair?”

At his words, she instinctively touched her hair. Her youthful face turned sullen.

‘What’s so good about white hair…’

Among elves, white hair wasn’t particularly considered auspicious. The reason being it’s not commonly seen in nature. Green, similar to nature, was considered closer to a blessing.

“Haha, come to think of it, we haven’t properly introduced ourselves. I am Frost Mane.”

“I’m Freesia.”

“Meeting here like this is a coincidence. Is there anything you’re curious about? Despite how I look, I’ve wandered around quite a bit. I can tell you all sorts of stories about the outside world.”

Freesia’s eyes, which had been keeping their distance, rolled. Stories of the outside world. Those words naturally piqued her interest. Although the elder had warned her to be cautious, listening to an audacious intruder spill information about the elf village didn’t seem too bad.

‘Should be okay, right?’

Without realizing it, Freesia perked up her ears and responded haughtily.

“Hmph. Let’s hear it then.”

“Let’s start with my hometown in the west. Unlike here, not even grass grows properly, and you can only find water sources in limited places. Despite that, people live there due to the many mineral resources hidden in the golden sands.”

“Huh. Sounds like something those dwarves would love.”

“You’ve got it right. Some even come up from the south for study and end up settling there.”

His story didn’t stop there. He spoke of a place filled with harsh cold, different from here. But the most surprising story was yet to come.

“Snow? What’s that?”

“It’s what falls instead of rain in cold places. I guess you wouldn’t see it in this hot southern region. In the north, it’s sometimes called the white devil or trash from the sky.”

A natural phenomenon of white color, unseen in this place. Curiosity welled up within her heart. She remembered, belatedly, what ‘snow’ was. She had read about it in books, and sometimes, when using ice magic, it would swirl around like fragments. Unlike transparent ice, it was a cool, white color. But to imagine plains and mountains covered in such snow…

‘…I want to see it.’

Freesia swallowed hard. How cold and beautiful must the snow in the north be? How warm and fine must the sand in the west be? The image of these places, so different from the jungle where she lived, vividly painted itself in her mind.

Before she knew it, Frost Mane was no longer just an intruder to her. He had become an exceptional storyteller.

“Then quickly, tell me about the central region!”

“Haha, I would love to, but it seems our time is up.”

She saw it too. The approaching subordinates of the elders, those narrow-minded old folks called elders.

‘Ah, what a pity…’

Frost Mane had said that the most interesting stories were from the central region. Freesia’s lips started to pout in disappointment.

“Well, we’ll see each other in the council chamber anyway. Let’s continue the story after the meeting.”

“…Right.”

The hope that had been grasped just as she was about to give up made her eyes sparkle. She was also a high elf. Though she was young, she had enough qualification to attend the council.

‘Then, I’ll ask about the central region, the south, and, hmm… the east? Maybe about the human festivals?’

“Well, I’m not sure how smoothly things will go.”

Frost Mane squinted slightly, leaving an enigmatic remark. Freesia tilted her head in curiosity. She had no idea at the time that he was about to drop an outrageous bombshell in the council chamber.

“The beastmen are planning to burn down the World Tree?!”

“Yes. So I began to wonder why you, who worship the World Tree, are cooperating with the beastmen.”

Freesia, who had been staring blankly at the council chamber, suddenly wanted to see the face of the brazen intruder again. Despite being human, he seemed to be quite the storyteller. His eloquent speech had not only affected her. Moreover,

‘Is he… smiling?’

He was watching the panicked elders with great amusement.
