“I have a lot of work to do, Your Highness the Third Prince.”

“It’s important. We need to seize the ledgers while the enemy is in disarray.”

“Ledgers? Your Highness, are you taking over the shady back alleys without my knowledge?”

When Ian nodded, Deus waved his hands in refusal.

“Oh dear, you’ve got the wrong person for that. If you’re heading to such places, you should take a knight with you. Why bring a magical engineer who knows nothing but research?”

“As far as I know, Deus is still more famous as an Elementalist, isn’t that right?”

“Elementalist Deus? I sold my soul to magical engineering. Look for someone else.”

“Why is our Magic Tower Master’s best disciple trying to back out? If your master tells you to go, you should go.”

Deus used magic to distance himself from Ian and spoke in a resolute voice.

“Detector, scanner, tablet—I don’t have enough time to research all night!”

Despite Deus’s protest, Ian smiled and said,

“How did you create that distance just now? Impressive.”

“A type of magic.”

“That’s exactly the kind of ability we need. Stealth and camouflage are your specialties, so I don’t think you need to worry.”

Deus, flattered by Ian’s praise, replied,

“That’s one of my skills. This magic used to irritate my master a lot.”

Embarrassed by his self-praise, Deus kept clearing his throat.

“So, you’ll come with me?”

“Isn’t it dangerous for me to go alone? I think we should take at least one strong knight.”

“Don’t worry about that. We always have someone watching over us.”

Ian glanced around lightly, causing a shadow that always watched him to flinch slightly.

“Ledgers sound illegal and dangerous.”

“When the lord goes to a dangerous place, it’s the duty of a comrade and servant to accompany him, right?”

“Yes, yes, of course. Have you located the ledgers?”

“Alex found them.”

“The youngest of the Frank faction you mentioned last time? Can we trust him? He even forgot to convey your message to the Katarina faction.”

Deus laughed, remembering Ian’s expression from that day.

“If he messes up again, you can show him what fire magic on his butt feels like. Simple enough, right?”

“Sure, but isn’t this something Alex can handle on his own?”

“I think the Frank faction is pretty tightly connected to Duke Blake, so their security will be strict. If Alex could handle it alone, there probably wouldn’t be any ledgers there.”

Deus thought for a moment before speaking.

“Could it be a trap, even though Alex was part of the Frank faction?”

“If Alex were the type to set traps, he wouldn’t have joined the Katarina faction. And aligning with a prince is better than siding with a back alley leader, right?”

“If I had to choose between Duke Blake and you, I’d still lean towards Duke Blake.”

“Very few people know about Duke Blake’s connection to the Frank faction. An uninformed Alex would naturally side with me, wouldn’t he?”

“Given your rising popularity, I suppose. Besides me, who else is coming along?”

“People from the Katarina faction and the knight I mentioned.”

Deus sighed deeply, realizing he had no choice.

“Alright, I’ll get ready. When do we leave?”

“Tonight. We need to move quickly. Since we’ve shaken the enemy, we need to attack before they can recover. If Duke Blake moves first, we’ll be at a disadvantage.”

As Ian was wrapping up his conversation with Deus, Tom reentered the room, speaking in a trembling voice.

“Y-Your Highness, there’s something…”

“Calm down, Tom, and speak slowly.”

Tom steadied himself slightly at Ian’s words and spoke in a calmer voice.

“Your Highness, the servant who delivered the letter was found dead.”

Ian’s expression darkened at Tom’s report. It seemed they needed to hurry more than he thought. If Duke Blake had already noticed and moved, both the ledgers and Alex’s life could be in danger.

Ian quickly headed to the Katarina faction with Deus.

***

“Lady Katarina, His Highness the Third Prince has arrived.”

“Let him in.”

Katarina greeted Ian with a playful tone.

“I’ve heard the back alleys have been quite tumultuous lately, and it seems Your Highness has finally decided to move your heavy butt.”

“As expected of an information network. As you know, the servant delivering information from the Rose Inn was killed. While I was the one pressuring the Frank faction, their quick response indicates we need to move fast. There’s a high probability that the Frank faction will ‘destroy evidence’ within a few days.”

“You delivered quite a blow, as you said you would. But coming to see me before the night even fell after the meeting means time is of the essence.”

“It’s likely because of the ‘ledgers’.”

Wiz guessed Ian’s intentions and spoke the exact word he wanted, causing Deus to comment in surprise.

“Ian, does he have the ability to read minds? He said the word you wanted before you even mentioned it.”

Recognizing Deus, Wiz bowed and greeted him.

“I am honored to meet Deus, the esteemed disciple of the Magic Tower Master.”

Deus blinked in surprise at Wiz’s immediate recognition.

“You’re impressive. I look forward to working with you.”

Ian shook his head at Deus’s casual tone and spoke to Wiz.

“Wiz, since you seemed to know what I wanted to do, have you prepared for it?”

“Yes, Lady Katarina, myself, and some of her direct troops will be moving with you.”

Seeing Wiz’s preparedness, Ian felt reassured. Working with capable people was indeed valuable. They anticipated his moves and prepared accordingly.

‘Still, it’s a bit creepy…’

Ian felt a chill thinking that those not fully integrated as his subordinates might be fully aware of his movements.

‘I thought they only knew the colors of the nobles’ underwear, but they might know mine too.’

“Don’t worry, Your Highness, we have no interest in your underwear color.”

Katarina smiled seductively, causing Ian to try and maintain a composed expression while Deus burst out laughing.

It was best to change the subject quickly in such situations.

“What have you decided about the porters detained in front of the inner city?”

“As you suggested, if the Frank faction’s downfall is certain, we plan to incorporate them. We’ll need more manpower to fill the void left by the Frank faction.”

“What about the captain of the inner city guards? I’d like to hear your thoughts.”

Ian planned to use Shilder, the captain, to shake the noble faction by showing the fate of those abandoned by their supposed allies. This could create a crack in the loyalty of the nobles’ followers, making them realize they could be sacrificed at any time.

“There’s no need to use a sword meant for an ogre to catch a kobold. It would be better to hand them over to the opposition. No need to dirty our hands.”

Ian laughed at Wiz’s suggestion, which mirrored his own thoughts.

“That seems fitting. I’ll leave the transportation to you.”

Meanwhile, Deus watched Ian with newfound admiration. Seeing Ian handle matters more maturely than he expected reassured him that his choice was not wrong.

“If there’s nothing else, we’ll go prepare. We’ll provide a room for you to rest.”

“Oh, I almost forgot to mention something.”

As Ian was about to add something, Wiz and Katarina looked at him.

“Remember, this mission includes not only retrieving the ledgers but also rescuing ‘Alex’.”

Katarina smiled and replied,

“You don’t need to worry about his life. I just received word from my subordinates that he’s still alive and well.”

“He’s a tough one.”

“He survived under my leadership; he won’t die on the streets. And the payment for this mission is the information in the ledgers, right?”

“Is that enough?”

“Of course. You know the power of the information in those ledgers, don’t you?”

“Honestly, what’s the success rate?”

Katarina thought for a moment before speaking.

“If Duke Blake hasn’t moved yet, there’s no chance of failure. But if he moved right after the meeting, our success depends on how quickly we can seize the ledgers.”

“Understood. Duke Blake will certainly make a move. We’ll head out as soon as night falls.”

Katarina agreed with Ian’s opinion and commented on his appearance.

“Your Highness, you’re not planning to go looking like that, are you? We’ll provide a disguise and clothes, but your hair and features are too recognizable. The nobles will surely notice.”

Before Katarina could finish speaking, Deus stepped forward.

“Don’t worry, that’s why I’m here.”

Deus, eager to show off his skills, used illusion magic to change Ian’s appearance.

“He looks strangely similar to Wiz, or is that just my imagination?”

Unable to see his reflection, Ian frowned and approached Deus, who made excuses.

“It’s not our actual departure yet.”

After a brief “behavior correction” session using a headlock, Ian headed to the room Wiz showed him, contemplating escape routes in case of unexpected events during the ledger retrieval.

‘I should discuss this with Wiz just in case.’

“Tsk tsk, what on earth is His Majesty thinking?”

In the banquet hall, Marquis Constinu looked at those from the Ballas territory with disdain.

Marquis Constinu is one of the three stars of the Goyard Kingdom.

He, too, did not like the outsider, Hyun.

“Prime Minister Nel of Ballas Territory greets Marquis Constinu.”

Seeing the woman named Nel, Constinu turned his head away.

It was a thorough disregard.

There was no one in this banquet hall with as much influence as he had.

Because of this, others at the event also ignored the members of the Guild Bright Future.

Constinu looked at the talented individuals filling the banquet hall.

Nobles and talents from all over the country were gathered here, destined to lead the Goyard Kingdom in the future.

Before he knew it, nobles from various regions had filled the seats around him.

“The star of the kingdom! It is an honor to meet Marquis Constinu!”

“Oh, are you a child of the Brack family? I heard you became a knight this time?”

“Yes, I will train diligently to become a knight who protects Marquis Constinu!”

“Marquis, how have you been!”

“Haha, it is a joy to have so many come to greet me.”

Constinu was pleased and raised his glass.

One by one, people in the banquet hall started to drink.

“You are drinking heavily today.”

“When else will I drink if not on such a joyous day?”

Constinu downed another glass and made a puzzled expression.

The exterior of Boldrom Fortress resembles a coliseum.

It is a massive fortress built around a circular wall, with the center open.

In the open sky, black currents were swirling.

“Hmm?”

The black currents condensed and fell towards Constinu.

Boooom!

Crash-

“……?”

Constinu looked puzzled.

Just a moment ago, the nobles laughing and chatting with him were being torn apart, their blood splattering.

The alcohol’s effect evaporated instantly.

“Ugh, aaah!”

“Kyahhh!”

Constinu could see a young woman and a man standing on the ground.

The infamy of the woman with long red hair was well known.

She possessed great power and worshipped an evil god.

People called her the First Calamity.

[First Calamity Helena appears!]

[First Calamity Helena Lv. 436]

The man standing beside her wielded a massive greatsword with a wavy blade.

Standing at 2 meters 20 centimeters tall, he was known for his unparalleled close combat skills among the five calamities.

[Second Calamity Rogal appears!]

[Second Calamity Rogal Lv. 429]

Constinu stepped back.

[Status Effect Calamity is activated.]

[A massive killing instinct paralyzes all reason.]

[Fear and terror seize everything.]

“Ugh…”

“Argh…”

Constinu looked around.

Those without martial training.

Those with weak bodies were foaming at the mouth and collapsing.

Constinu, too, was engulfed by immense fear and terror.

Helena soon raised a staff shaped like a serpent’s head.

Crackle-

[The Book of the Evil God is activated.]

[A massive barrier engulfs the entire Boldrom Fortress.]

[Entry into Boldrom Fortress is prohibited.]

[Helena’s level is too low to use the Book of the Evil God.]

[Levels above 450 cannot enter.]

[Levels above 400 have a slim chance of entering.]

[Levels above 300 can enter after a long time.]

The Book of the Evil God.

The power bestowed by the evil god for the calamities.

It was similar to the power Jack, the Fifth Calamity, had manifested.

Helena struck the ground with her staff.

Crash-!

“Since you killed the demon, you must pay for your sins, right?”

The ground touched by the tip of the staff turned to sand and sank below.

The size of the sinkhole-like formation gradually increased.

From within it, a mysterious sound emerged.

The faces of those present hardened.

From the collapsed ground, something the size of a human arm began to rise.

‘Antennae?’

It was the antennae of a black insect.

Soon, a massive creature standing at 2.5 meters tall revealed itself.

[Giant Ant Lv.354]

Approximately 150 giant ants emerged from the ground.

What made Constinu more tense were the ants spreading their wings and taking flight.

[Soldier Ant Lv.375]

The soldier ants carried spears and swords, numbering about twenty.

‘So the First Calamity is related to summoning magic…’

As Helena swung her staff, a black current seeped into the bodies of the ants.

[The physical defense of the Giant Ants increases by 30%.]

[The magical defense of the Giant Ants increases by 30%.]

Kiyaaah-!

A giant ant charged at a noble.

One of the knights he led stepped forward to block it.

The brave knight swung his sword confidently at the giant ant.

Clang-

The knight’s eyes wavered.

“W-what is this…?”

The carapace of the giant ant didn’t even have a scratch.

The average level of the knights was 320.

The defense of the level 350+ giant ants, boosted by 30%, was beyond their capability to handle.

The ant grabbed the knight with its jaws.

Crunch-

The knight’s armor crumpled like paper, and as the ant bit down, he was torn in half.

Splatter-

“The calamity has begun.”

“Aaaaah!”

“Protect the nobles!”

“Prime Minister, over here… Aaagh!”

“Aaaaah!”

Constinu’s face turned pale.

The weapons of the ordinary knights could not affect the giant ants.

Constinu assessed the situation with cold precision.

‘This is the end of Goyard…’

The end of the kingdom does not mean the death of all its people.

The individuals present here are the talents who will lead the kingdom in ten years.

If all of the approximately 600 people here were to die, Goyard would suffer irreparable damage.

At that moment, following Helena’s gesture, dozens of giant ants turned their heads towards Constinu.

“Marquis Constinu, do not worry!”

Knights and ants clashed. Among them were some outstanding knights.

Those known as sword masters of a territory.

Powerful individuals reaching level 350.

However, even they were being overwhelmed by three or four soldier ants each.

“Yikes!”

“This can’t be happening!”

“Sir Rams fell so easily…!”

The nobles and talents who had been standing by Constinu fled.

Those who had once sworn to protect him with their lives were now running away with their tails between their legs.

Constinu saw an ant with its sharp mandibles approaching him.

“Yikes!”

Just then,

Swoosh-!

Boom-!

A single arrow sent the giant ant flying 20 meters away.

‘W-what…!?’

Constinu was astonished.

The arrow was only half the length of a normal arrow.

Moreover, the ant that was hit by the arrow had its thick carapace pierced, and it was writhing, spilling thick green blood.

Looking back, he saw people advancing instead of fleeing.

Constinu took in their sight.

At the forefront was the woman he had disregarded, Nel.

“Let us escort you. The mages are forming a barrier spell, so we just need to hold on for a bit.”

In the midst of the fearful situation, Constinu, who had shown disgrace, lashed out.

“How can people like you stop those monsters!”

At that moment, a giant soldier ant descending from the air was struck by a man.

Thud-

It was the dragon knight, Lisel.

And then,

Swoosh-

Swoosh-

Swoosh-

Ian and Hye-ji stood on either side, shooting arrows furiously.

Ian’s arrows were less accurate but disrupted the ants.

Hye-ji’s arrows were less destructive but extremely precise.

Kieeek-

Seven ants simultaneously spewed poison.

At that moment, Bark appeared and slammed his shield down.

Clang-

The poison froze before it could reach Constinu.

Constinu looked up at the sky.

Tae-hoon kicked six times in the air.

Pa, papapa, papat-!

He kicked away the soldier ants trying to snatch the nobles from the air.

Then, he leapt up again and stomped down on a soldier ant flying above.

Boom-

Beyond the rising dust, a skilled swordsman emerged.

This lone warrior roamed the battlefield freely.

Swoosh-

Papapapap-

Thud

Constinu couldn’t believe it.

The level displayed for these people didn’t account for such strength.

‘What in the world…?’

How could they so easily overpower those of similar levels, around 330-350?

Constinu soon found the key difference.

‘Artifacts…?’

They all wielded objects with special powers.

These were what made them strong.

In any case,

[A defensive barrier is being formed.]

A barrier formed by dozens of mages separated the allies from the enemies.

‘…Did they save me?’

Constinu, who had mocked them as outsiders while enjoying the banquet.

The reason for mocking them as outsiders was due to his suspicion that they wouldn’t be serious about defending the kingdom.

But he was wrong.

The Guild Bright Future had formed a strong bond with Constinu.

However, Constinu knew.

‘We are all going to die…’

That the situation was hopeless.

Meanwhile,

Nel was whispering with Hyun.

Hyun gave instructions.

[Guild Master Hyun: …I think it’s ready now.]

Nel’s eyes wavered.

She pondered over him for a long time.

[Nel: Understood. But are you confident about making that sword?]

Nel didn’t get to hear the answer.

Helena swung her finger gracefully.

[Whisper and guild chat are now restricted.]

Thanks to the barrier, Nel had gained some time to hold out.

She looked around.

Not only were there NPCs, but a few players were also present.

Nel’s heart pounded with excitement.

‘Finally.’

Perhaps this was the moment she had been waiting for a long time.

Nel took action.

***

AJ Internet Broadcasting Station.

The status of Boldrom Fortress was being broadcast on dozens of monitors.

All the broadcast screens were from the viewpoints of the players inside Boldrom Fortress.

BJ Beren.

Currently achieving 700,000 viewers, he has 400,000 subscribers.

His content mainly focused on showing the lives of nobles.

By a stroke of luck, he was able to broadcast from the banquet.

“Is there no BJ willing to stream directly to us?”

“No, there isn’t…”

Producer Kim made a bitter expression.

Individual BJs would not want to share their audience in a situation where they could take all the views.

Moreover, the public interest was high.

700,000 viewers.

460,000 viewers.

390,000 viewers.

These were the viewer counts of the players at that event.

At that moment, cheers erupted from various places.

It was the voices of the BJs and experts explaining the current situation.

-Who are they!?

-Mysterious individuals saved Marquis Constinu in a moment of crisis.

-Brothers…! That’s Lisel, right? The genius trio? Isn’t that the Saint’s child!?

-Brothers, what on earth is happening!?

“…!?”

“…!?”

Producer Kim and Director Lee were shocked.

“Why are they there?”

“Why are they together?”

High-ranking individuals famous enough to stir the nation. Their presence together astonished everyone the most.

As a result, the viewer counts of the broadcasts began to increase even more.

In fact, Lisel, Bark, and Saint Belia were quite famous in Ares.

Moreover, the genius trio was well-known to everyone.

At that moment,

Bzzzz

‘Huh?’

Producer Kim answered the phone.

-This is Kim Hye-in. I’m calling to negotiate exclusive broadcasting rights with AJ Internet Broadcasting Station. I understand that Director Lee Taeho has strong ties with the station’s officials. Please issue an official order to halt all BJ broadcasts.

“An official order? That’s not an easy task.”

Exclusive broadcasting? It’s possible if they pursue them for violation of portrait rights.

But it’s not an easy task.

Director Lee took the phone.

“I’d like to hear the conditions. Give us a clear reason why we should do this.”

Director Lee was a thorough person.

Even though he was once a director of a terrestrial network and had many connections, issuing an official order was a serious matter.

However,

“…What?”

Director Lee’s eyes wavered as he listened to Hye-in.

‘This is something we must do.’

Director Lee was astonished.

“I will issue the order immediately.”

Director Lee, watching the monitors, was filled with admiration.

“Finally?”

***

[The broadcast is ending.]

The viewers were confused.

– What’s going on?

– Are you kidding?

– What’s happening all of a sudden!

The BJs’ broadcasts, which they had been enjoying, were suddenly cut off.

– Is this for real?

– They say it was forcibly ended due to portrait rights issues.

At that moment.

– Hey, AJ Internet Broadcasting Station got exclusive rights!

– What?

– How did AJ Internet Broadcasting Station pull that off!

– Let’s go!

The viewers moved quickly.

Soon, the viewers who joined were astonished.

– Look at the viewer count rising.

– They’re absorbing the viewers from the shut-down BJs.

[Current viewer count: 1,101,061]

– Wow, AJ Internet Broadcasting Station hit the jackpot.

– The guild name just got revealed!

– What, it was a guild?

– But why was the guild name kept secret until now?

[Guild Bright Future]

– Guild Bright Future?

– That’s a good name.

– Where is Bright Future, you weebs, lol

The experts were also surprised.

– This is astonishing! The top rankers in our country were all concentrated in one guild!

– Who is the master of this guild that was able to gather such individuals?

Then, another unexpected event occurred.

[Guild Bright Future changes its name.]

– ???

– What, what’s this? Why change the guild name all of a sudden…

[Changed to Hyun’s Forge]

– …!?

– Wh-what…!?

– Blacksmith Hyuuuun!!!

– It’s Hyun’s forge. The long-hidden Hyun’s Forge reveals itself at last!!!

It was a shock.

The long-veiled Hyun’s Forge finally spread its wings.

This tremendous shock spread beyond the country to the world.

The shock was proven by a single number.

Round 90

Prev | TOC | Next

While I was dumbfounded by the unexpected hospitality, I noticed a familiar face.

“Mr. Kyu-seong! Welcome. I’ll show you the way.”

“Oh, it’s been a while.”

It was Chairman Baek’s secretary. He greeted me with a bright smile and then shook my hand warmly.

“But there are so many people here.”

“Everyone’s here to express their gratitude. They all know, you see. Thanks to you, our Awakened, Baek Seung-hyun, was healed.”

Though the media had only released scanty reports, it seemed the guild members were all aware. Oh Min-joo, who had come with me, began to shed tears quietly.

“Thank you, Mr. Kyu-seong. Truly, thank you.”

“Oh, no, it’s just….”

As I was struggling to grasp the situation, a few more people, moved by the emotion, began to tear up as well.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to….”

“Awakened Min-joo, please go inside first. I’ll guide Mr. Kyu-seong.”

“I’m sorry.”

As I watched the still-tearful Min-joo disappear, the secretary apologized with a remorseful expression.

“I’m sorry for the suddenness. Actually, Awakened Min-joo is Baek Seung-hyun’s fiancée. It’s not publicly known.”

“Oh!”

I wondered why someone as famous as Awakened Min-joo came to greet me personally, but now it made sense. Her emotional reaction was understandable.

“They grew close while conquering dungeons together.”

“They really suit each other. I’m so glad Awakened Baek Seung-hyun recovered.”

“Haha, it’s all thanks to you, Mr. Kyu-seong. Now, let’s go. The chairman and Awakened Baek Seung-hyun are waiting for you. In fact, the chairman wanted to greet you himself, but he had to stay inside to prepare, so here I am.”

“Prepare?”

As I voiced my confusion, the secretary gave a meaningful smile and led me on. Members of the Iron Blood Guild surrounded us as we walked in together.

Bang!

Pop! Pop!

“Huh?”

As soon as we entered, we were showered with confetti. Fanfare blared, accompanied by drum sounds and cheers.

What on earth is going on?

I just wanted to come quietly and offer my congratulations, but it seemed they had prepared a grand event.

As the scene spun around me, someone suddenly hugged me tightly.

“Hahaha! Mr. Kyu-seong! You’re here!”

“Chairman Baek.”

“Thank you so, so much for coming today!”

Chairman Baek hugged me like a child, full of joy. He had even summoned his familiars to join the celebration.

“Th-thank you.”

“Hmm?”

Noticing my awkward gratitude, Chairman Baek waved his hand, and the noisy music instantly ceased.

“Kyu-seong, I hope it wasn’t too overwhelming. Are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine.”

I said that, but my ears were still ringing.

Sensing my discomfort, Chairman Baek looked worried and kept checking my expression. I appreciated his efforts to please me, but the unexpected event was quite overwhelming.

“Ahem.”

Chairman Baek signaled to someone.

Then, the people carrying a giant cake quickly disappeared behind the curtains.

“…….”

“Well then, shall we have a more intimate celebration among ourselves?”

The band that had been playing the fanfare quietly disappeared before I knew it.

As an awkward atmosphere slowly began to envelop the surroundings, I finally took a moment to look around.

‘Oh, wow.’

The Iron Blood Guild, being one of the top guilds in South Korea, had most of its members as well-known figures. Being in the industry, I recognized everyone, even those who might not be known to the general public.

While I was scanning the faces, I noticed Baek Seung-hyun standing awkwardly in the distance, as if unsure of when to make his appearance.

Though his complexion was pale, seeing him standing there confirmed that the detoxification was complete.

“Ah.”

Just then, Baek Seung-hyun made eye contact with me and hurriedly approached. Oh Min-joo, whom I had seen earlier, was supporting him.

His walk was still awkward, unlike Si-young, who was in the combat sector and needed significant rehabilitation.

“Awakened Baek Seung-hyun?”

“Ah….”

Baek Seung-hyun couldn’t speak and just started to cry. The pain he had endured was palpable, causing my emotions to surge.

When I gave him the vegetable juice, it was simply to save a person. I didn’t fully grasp the reality until now, seeing him like this and feeling his emotions intensely.

“Th-thank you. Thank you.”

Baek Seung-hyun grabbed my hand and bowed deeply.

Listening to his trembling voice, I slowly helped him stand upright.

“Seeing you safe makes me want to cry too. Now that you’re healed, only happiness awaits you.”

“Truly… thank you.”

Oh Min-joo, standing nearby, was crying with her mouth covered.

Chairman Baek also subtly turned his head to wipe away his tears, and other guild members were reacting in their own ways.

“Thank you! Awakened Lee Kyu-seong!”

“Thank you so much for treating our Seung-hyun.”

“Now let’s live happily together!”

Amidst everyone’s joy, Baek Seung-hyun wiped his tears and gave an awkward smile.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen… This occasion to thank you, Kyu-seong, has turned quite strange.”

“It’s fine. This is a celebration for Awakened Baek Seung-hyun’s recovery. And the party isn’t over yet.”

I had already glanced around to confirm something.

I immediately took Bokkeum out of my backpack and started preparing something.

The last vegetable juice and the real reason I came here.

‘This time, I’m properly prepared.’

I had aged dough made with barley malt, home-grown toppings, and honey from Alfheim.

“I’ll make this an unforgettable party.”

I smiled confidently.

***

In an alley in Yongsan, a trio was nervously conversing while preparing something.

“Brother, are you sure there won’t be any problems?”

“What if there are problems? What are you going to do?”

“Um….”

“Enough talking. Are you both ready? Don’t forget to use the artifact masks now. And remember, during the operation, keep your mouths shut unless necessary.”

“Huuh.”

Nervous breaths filled the air.

The trio were all Awakened. However, each had been expelled from their guilds for various reasons and had become criminals.

Despite this, they were not to be underestimated; the strongest among them was a Level 5 Awakened.

A Level 3 support Awakened, a Level 4 combat Awakened, and a Level 5 summoner Awakened.

They were planning a robbery.

“Let’s go.”

“…Okay.”

Their target was a building in Yongsan housing shops for Awakened equipment.

Each piece of Awakened gear was extremely valuable. Additionally, there was a thriving black market for such items, so there was little concern about selling the stolen goods.

Of course, given that the area is well-policed, Jeong Ji-hwan, a Level 5 Awakened, took advantage of this fact.

He planned to execute the robbery, relying on the complacency that comes with a sense of security. His special ability gave him confidence that he could escape swiftly afterward.

Jeong Ji-hwan had brought along various monsters he had summoned specifically for this job. Using the abilities of these summoned monsters, he had devised a perfect plan to transport the stolen goods and escape.

‘These guys are just here as a backup. I could have done this alone.’

He was even prepared to abandon them if things went south.

As the corrupt trio of Awakened executed their crime, an unexpected figure was also heading to Yongsan.

* * *

After saying goodbye to Frey, the slimes, and Gomgom, Ara left the slime dungeon, wearing a straw hat and carrying a bag.

“Mm!!”

With a face full of determination, Ara clenched her fists tightly.

After passing through the familiar mountain path she always walked with Kyu-seong, Ara descended to the street and waved her hand aimlessly at passing cars.

However, no matter how much she waved, no car suddenly stopped.

“Why isn’t it stopping!?”

Ara puffed her cheeks, remembering how Kyu-seong would always stop a car this way.

After about 10 minutes of waving, a car finally stopped. Luckily, it was a taxi.

“Hmm? Are you hailing a taxi?”

The taxi driver asked, rolling down the window, and Ara confidently exclaimed.

“Yongsan!”

“Yongsan?”

“Take me to Yongsan!”

Ara said confidently and walked toward the passenger seat to open the door. The taxi driver, who was watching her blankly, asked again.

“Yongsan? You’re going to Yongsan?”

“Yep!”

“Alone?”

“Yep!”

“You’re a smart young lady.”

The taxi driver scratched his head and then nodded. As the car started moving, Ara, feeling a sense of excitement, checked the bag she had brought.

Inside were a box containing slime pieces and various treasures (trinkets).

Looking out the window, familiar scenes she had seen with Kyu-seong passed by. The fact that Kyu-seong wasn’t there now felt strange to Ara.

“I already miss him!”

“Hmm?”

The driver tilted his head at Ara’s sudden remark, but Ara was already lost in her own world.

Recalling various thoughts and memories, they soon arrived in Yongsan.

“Thank you!”

“Hey, kid, what about the fare?”

“Fare?”

Ara, who had quickly gotten out of the car, stared blankly before rummaging through her bag. She then pulled something out and handed it over.

“Hmm?”

“Goodbye~!”

“Uh, uh…! Kid!”

The taxi driver looked alternately at the item Ara handed him and Ara, who was quickly disappearing, only to find that what he received was a bag full of cherry tomatoes.

“Heh, heh….”

Having cleared her first hurdle, Ara then looked around and froze.

‘It’s so big!!’

When she came with Kyu-seong, she always stuck close to him and never had to check the directions herself. She never realized how vast the area was.

Palace 24

Prev | TOC I Next

The maids working in the Third Prince’s palace noticeably brightened, and the maids from other palaces approached to ask the reason.

“You used to look like you were going to die when you got assigned to the Third Prince’s palace, but now your face is all lit up!”

“If you were in my shoes, you’d feel the same way! Honestly, I thought I’d die as soon as I got there. The bad rumors about the Third Prince’s palace were countless.”

The maid, who had a gloomy expression while talking about the past, smiled brightly as she talked about recent events.

“But the Third Prince has completely changed. I thought the sun had risen in the west.”

“What? How has he changed?”

Ariel, the exclusive maid of the Third Prince’s palace, recalled her memories as she answered the endless questions from the maids of other palaces.

“Do you know what you had to be most careful about in the Third Prince’s palace?”

“You had to avoid upsetting the Third Prince’s mood. Among ourselves, we used to say he was notorious for his temper. Many servants disappeared after offending him.”

Ariel smiled instead of getting offended by the other maid’s indirect criticism of her master.

“That was the past. But now, Prince Ian is completely different. If in the past, he would have immediately beaten someone for a small mistake, now he just lets it go.”

‘Does poor Ariel know that’s how it should be?’

The other maids felt sorry for Ariel, who was expressing gratitude for something that was common in other palaces.

‘People don’t change suddenly…’

A maid from another palace, who had experienced the Third Prince’s wrath before, asked skeptically.

“Ariel, are you lying to us because you’re stressed? Did the Third Prince really change that much? Even if I hit my little brother while educating him, he wouldn’t change like that.”

A maid who managed the Chancellor’s office defended Ariel.

“But Ariel might be right. I once saw our Chancellor smiling while talking about the Third Prince.”

Ariel lifted her nose proudly as her statements gained some credibility.

“Do you know what happened recently? I accidentally spilled tea while carrying it. Do you know what the Third Prince did?”

“Usually, that would mean a broken limb, right?”

“Exactly. That would be the expected outcome for those familiar with the old Third Prince. But do you know what ‘our’ Third Prince did?”

Everyone waited silently for Ariel to continue.

“He grabbed me with one hand, caught the tea tray with the other, and asked if I was okay!”

“Is that even possible? That sounds like someone else’s soul took over him! In the past, a servant who made a similar mistake was severely beaten and expelled from the palace.”

“That’s what I’m saying. There’s so much more, but I’ll stop here. One thing is for sure: the Third Prince’s palace is now the best place to work. If you want, apply to work here later. You know it’s too late once the rumors spread, right?”

The other maids nodded continuously, considering the Third Prince’s palace as a potential future workplace.

Ariel’s statements might be lies, but her brightened face was convincing. Just a month ago, she had been more irritable and sensitive than anyone else, but now she was smiling benevolently, making her colleagues trust her words to some extent. Words can lie, but actions and expressions often reveal the truth.

As the other maids left, Ariel’s close friend Annie approached her and asked quietly,

“Ariel, be honest with me. Did the Third Prince really change? It was terrifying when I worked there.”

Annie asked with wide eyes, and Ariel replied teasingly.

“Yes, now I’m not envious of you working in the First Prince’s palace with his angelic kindness~”

Annie sighed deeply at Ariel’s words and said,

“The First Prince is no longer as kind as an angel. Recently, he’s been hysterical over the smallest things, probably because something bad happened.”

“See? I told you leaving a friend in hell wasn’t right. Come back to me, and your luck might change.”

Annie replied with a look of grievance at Ariel’s teasing tone.

“You know it wasn’t my decision. The head maid ordered me to transfer.”

“I don’t care about those complicated reasons. I just want to say one thing, Annie.”

Seeing Ariel’s serious expression, Annie perked up her ears and focused on her words.

“Tell them you want to transfer to the Third Prince’s palace immediately. Now is the perfect time. If competition gets tougher later, even I might not be able to recommend you. You know how fast rumors spread in the palace.”

“You mean it? I used to tremble with fear every time I cleaned in front of the Third Prince, fearing for my life whenever he looked at me with those murderous eyes.”

Annie shivered as she recalled her past days working in the Third Prince’s palace.

“I was terrified at first too. But now, the Third Prince is kind, and I work comfortably. Do you know Tom?”

“The Third Prince’s exclusive attendant?”

“Yes, he seems to have rejuvenated recently. He’s always smiling.”

Talking about Tom, Ariel suddenly mentioned a name Annie hadn’t heard before.

“By the way, Tom often repeats a strange word.”

“A strange word?”

“Something like ‘Answer Post’? It sounds like a person’s name. He keeps saying it to us, and he seems pleased when we mention it.”

“Hmm, I’ve never heard that word before. What could it mean?”

“Well, he doesn’t scold us about it. I’ll ask him later.”

“Listening to you, it seems the rumors are true.”

Annie lowered her voice.

“What rumors?”

“That the Emperor and the Chancellor are favoring the Third Prince these days. I heard they support him a lot in meetings and in other ways.”

Ariel responded proudly to Annie’s words.

“Annie, you should be grateful to have me as your friend.”

“What? Tell me quickly!”

“Do you know why Tom’s face has brightened?”

Seeing Annie’s eager eyes, Ariel felt a pleasant sense of satisfaction. She felt it truly mattered whom you served.

“The Emperor restored the budget for the Third Prince’s palace. Now I can buy what I need without hesitation.”

“They restored the budget that was cut due to his reckless behavior? Wow!”

Annie’s eyes widened, and she spoke with determination.

“I’ll go and tell the head maid right now.”

“Yes, hurry up before it’s too late!”

Annie started walking towards the head maid’s quarters but turned back to Ariel, just in case.

“Ariel, you’re not lying, right? If you drag your friend into hell, you both stay there forever.”

Ariel ran after Annie to give her a playful knock on the head, praying that the peace in the Third Prince’s palace would continue.

***

After the internal affairs meeting, Ian headed to the Magic Tower, where his engineer was hard at work.

“Our genius magical engineer is always busy.”

Deus, who was focused on optimizing the Detector, Scanner, and Tablet as Ian had instructed, smiled as he heard Ian’s voice from behind.

“Ah, our Third Prince, who is very popular with the servants these days!”

“That’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

“Seeing you pretend to be humble, you’re starting to look more like a prince and less like a rascal.”

Ian had a very effective way of dealing with Deus’s teasing.

‘Headlock.’

“Ack, isn’t this too much?”

“Is the research going well? You know I’ve secured a generous budget, right?”

Ian released Deus, who had been hitting his arm, and asked about the progress of the research.

“The optimization of the blueprint is complete. Now we just need to get high-grade mana stones from the Chancellor and start production.”

“Any anticipated difficulties in production?”

Deus grinned at Ian’s question. In construction, the design always took the bigger share of the money.

“Following the design is just a matter of having eyes.”

“I see, but can I trust the security to our junior magical engineer?”

“Who else but the genius magical engineer?”

“Can you protect it from the Tower Master?”

“Don’t worry. If you’re really concerned, put it in your space pouch.”

Ian admired Deus, who had figured out he had a space pouch even though he hadn’t mentioned it. Deus truly was the top genius of the Magic Tower.

“Can you develop this too?”

“It might be a bit challenging… but that makes it more fun, right?”

Seeing the burning passion in Deus’s eyes, Ian thought he might soon bring a remarkable item to the Chancellor. Or maybe he should give one to Tom first.

Knock, knock.

“Hmm, who is it?”

“Deus, it’s Tom. I have something urgent to deliver to His Highness.”

“Come in, Tom.”

As soon as Tom entered, Deus cast a concealment spell. No matter how close they were, business was business.

“Your Highness, a letter has arrived from someone named Alex.”

After checking the letter Tom handed him, Ian spoke to Deus.

“Deus, we need to go out.”

“I have a mountain of work to do.”

Deus cautiously expressed his reluctance.

Survival 136

-Scritch, scratch.

The sound of writing utensils echoed quietly in the lecture hall.

“Um, so…”

“Was it Professor Heidi? Please continue the class. I am here to learn as well.”

“Oh, yes! So, the former emperor…”

‘These transparent bastards.’

Startled by the changed attitude of the nobles, the professor repeatedly froze during the class, which was quite a sight.

This strange phenomenon stemmed from just one word.

From the mouth of Professor Marks.

“The midterm exam will be divided into a written test composed of essential general education subjects and a practical test involving duels between students. Based on the grades, classes and rankings will be rearranged accordingly, so please take note.”

Written test.

Upon hearing that the subjects they had neglected until now could affect their grades, the students all silently screamed.

Of course, this being an academy, it was a natural rule.

However.

‘Professor Marks has ignited the flames of grade supremacy.’

In reality, there was no significant practical difference between the second and third place ranks.

Just honor.

Or perhaps the hope of becoming the student council president.

But.

A professor who dared to ‘insult the crown prince’ right in front of them and yet was not punished.

The implication was simple.

Although it was a trivial ranking, at least within the academy.

The opportunity to stand above the nobles.

Or the chance to fall below the commoners.

The chance for ‘reversal.’

Nobles who had always been revered, as well as commoners who had clawed their way up, were all engulfed in this strange fervor.

With just that intangible reward, an unexpected wave of academic enthusiasm spread among the students.

‘It’s all pointless.’

I watched this and secretly clicked my tongue.

-Are you not studying?

-Cramming has many issues. I have been studying all along.

-For someone who claims that, you don’t seem to study much…

The reason I could remain relaxed despite Bathory’s criticism was simple.

Precisely, there was ‘no need to.’

The story, settings…all the details delved into while playing ‘Under the Chandelier’…

The experience from the game turned into the knowledge needed for the written exams here.

Is that all?

“If you are the personal attendant of the lady, you should master more perfect etiquette. Now, bow slightly, hands around your chest…”

In addition, I had received strict training from Yegor, the head attendant.

With this alone, taking the exams shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Furthermore.

I had information that only I knew at this point in time.

‘In the first place, the practical side reflects more on the grades.’

With an impending catastrophe that could destroy the world, there’s no way they’d value bookish knowledge more.

In the end, what decided the ranks was not the knowledge in books but the experience in the field.

“Hans, would you like to spar after class? I need to loosen up a bit for the midterms.”

Yes.

Like Luciana, it would be more beneficial for grades to swing a sword a few more times.

However.

“I’m sorry.”

“Hm? Is there a problem?”

“There are things I need to prioritize handling first.”

…It would be a lie to say it’s not regrettable.

To think I declined a date (in the form of a duel) personally offered by my favorite!

Moreover, dueling with her would greatly help my lacking aura control, so it was indeed a shame to let it go.

‘But, there is a more important task at hand.’

Yes.

Luciana’s future is more important than my personal desires.

There was something I absolutely needed to confirm for that.

“…Hmm. You seem quite serious about this.”

“Pardon?”

“There’s no need to pretend. Well, your strength comes from unexpected variables, so if you reveal that while dueling me, it would certainly be a loss for you. I understand.”

Luciana nodded to herself in satisfaction.

I was more startled by her change in attitude.

‘What kind of misunderstanding is this?’

Before I could correct her, she whispered confidently.

“I’ve seen your determination to surpass me in the midterms. Go ahead and give it your all.”

When I postponed the duel with her, I expected at least a bit of reproach.

As expected of Luciana, she was a warrior full of competitive spirit and a commanding presence befitting her position.

“I won’t be an easy opponent either. This will be an interesting exam.”

If there was a problem…

…I only aimed to be second place.

Should I prepare for something?

* * *

-If the descendant of the warriors saw you now, she would be greatly disappointed.

“Ahem!”

I kept clearing my throat in response to Bathory’s reprimands echoing in my mind.

-There is a deep meaning behind this. It’s all for Luciana, after all.

-Indeed. You always act with intent, so I don’t doubt you. But… the appearance is somewhat…

Tsk, tsk.

At Bathory’s suspicion, I clicked my tongue and thought,

‘How could a vampire who knows nothing of the human world understand the will of a king?’

Midterms?

Of course, they are important.

But more than the exam itself, there was a crucial element for me.

That was the event derived from it.

The so-called ‘Library Date.’

‘An event where potential male leads get involved with Rene while preparing for the exam. I need to see it with my own eyes.’

I already confirmed that she had no intention of getting involved with the crown prince by observing her affiliation with the third prince’s faction.

But just in case.

In typical romance games or visual novels, things often progress regardless of the heroine’s wishes.

Even if you blatantly choose the ‘leave me alone’ option, it often leads to the ‘You’re the first to reject me!’ development, which is a cliché in Korea.

‘If she gets involved with the crown prince here, it would be the worst-case scenario.’

The decisive factor in Luciana’s downfall.

The union of the crown prince and Rene must be cut off from the beginning to eliminate any possibility.

‘Moreover, even if that’s not the case, I need to confirm the saintess’s partner.’

Rene is the protagonist who leads to the game’s ending.

Depending on which male lead she interacts with, the recommended development route changes completely due to the different stats that can be raised.

For example, if she interacts with mages like Ricky or Luke, she becomes a complete support-type mage.

If she interacts with swordsmen like Oparn or Theodore, she becomes a holy knight who uses magic and engages in melee combat.

‘I need to confirm this to plan what to do next.’

To support her with relics suitable for that tech at the right time.

Rene, too, had just finished her class and was seated in a corner of the library.

-Just asking, but have you developed an interest in that saintly girl? You already have several people you’re emotionally involved with; I’m deeply concerned you might overextend yourself.

-No, how could that be? There’s no way I’d have any interest in a user of holy power, who is practically the nemesis of demons.

-For someone who says that, your methods are quite impure. Asking Ellie to cast an invisibility spell on you and spying like this.

I clicked my tongue at Bathory’s sharp words today.

‘It’s understandable to misunderstand.’

A perfect stalker.

Bathory, who watched my actions from the shadows, sounded colder than usual.

But just from my usual interactions with the saint, it should be clear that I have no feelings for her…

-You need to reflect a bit. As the king of doppelgangers who feeds on emotions, how is it that you are so…

-Shh! Please be quiet for a moment!

I had no time to listen to Bathory’s complaints.

Finally.

Someone had approached the desk where Rene was sitting.

‘Now, who could be the protagonist of this library date?’

[You still seem unfamiliar with noble etiquette. Each action has its meaning. Placing your hand on your chest, as seen in this book, means offering your heart, often used to express loyalty or love.]

The considerate tycoon ‘Luke,’ who teaches essential etiquette under the guise of ‘investment’?

[Magic becomes stronger when limited in output. There’s a significant difference in efficiency. Even for you, who lacks a core, it should not be too different. I will help, so try it later.]

The ‘grumpy genius’ Ricky, who teaches his specialty, magic, to satisfy academic interest?

[You want to learn physical combat? Without aura, it’s a bit inefficient, but… if Rene wants it, I can’t refuse.]

The ‘from friend to lover’ Oparn, who builds a bond based on their commoner background while teaching martial arts?

Or the ‘straightforward, exotic charmer’ Theodore Treja, who boasts unique Eastern charm?

“Ah, you’ve arrived!”

“Trusting one’s subordinates is also a virtue of a ruler. If a close aide calls, I should naturally come.”

The one she greeted so warmly was none of the people I predicted.

Now, a rather familiar blue hair.

‘I’m not well-versed in the third prince, as he is a DLC character.’

His strengths lie in reading trends and smooth talking.

He had no remarkable prowess in combat.

Mage? Warrior?

No, given he remains in Class B, his abilities don’t seem outstanding.

Either way, it’s not a good decision for growth.

The saint’s growth is essential for the ending, not a choice.

Just when I thought of calling her aside to give advice before it was too late.

“Saint? I heard you called me regarding negotiations with Brother Hans…”

A familiar voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

“I didn’t expect a member of the royal family. My apologies.”

“No, it’s fine. I heard you’re a mercenary favored by Hans Byron. Please have a seat. Since it’s come to this, we might as well prepare for the exam together.”

Should I say he had the demeanor of a ruler who embraces allies?

The third prince good-naturedly invited Oparn to study together.

‘Hmm, indeed, Oparn is quite useful.’

Although controlling a holy knight is difficult due to close combat requirements, the potential is very high.

Having used him well to see the ending myself, it seemed the saint was effectively progressing the main story.

If the third prince and Oparn joined forces, it would yield a good result.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was a misconception.

“Saint, regarding the help from last time…”

Something.

“I expected to be worked hard as a penalty from the disciplinary trial, but to be taught magic?”

Something was off.

“Lady Rene? You seem to have quite a few visitors.”

“Oh, come on in. Ahem.”

Even the eloquent third prince seemed flustered by the increasing number of people, stumbling over his words.

“Alright! Since we have experts from various fields gathered, shall we get started?”

The saint, smiling brightly, had finally called together all the other main male characters from the original story, excluding the crown prince.

At the sight, Bathory conveyed my bewildered thoughts through telepathy.

-…Is she really a saint? She looks fine on the outside, but she’s nothing like the saint I know.”

* * *

“Hmph. Things are going better than expected.”

[Goal Exceeded]

[Additional Reward]

[…]

Rene’s heart soared at the performance report displayed in the status window before her eyes.

There was no need to turn Luciana into an enemy, and she had gained favor with the potential male leads.

‘At this rate, I might see an ending I’ve never seen before.’

She hummed a tune and, with a lighter step, was about to return to her dormitory.

“Wait a moment.”

A familiar, yet colder than usual, voice called out from behind her.

“L-Lord Byron. Haha, what brings you here? If it’s not urgent, I have things to attend to as well….”

It was unsettling.

Despite his handsome appearance befitting a game character, her instinct told her they were completely incompatible.

Moreover, today he seemed even more irritable.

“For someone busy, you were happily chatting with the noble sons and even my mercenary earlier.”

Hans Byron’s tone grew colder, and she swallowed hard.

Indeed, fitting for the subordinate of the cold-hearted mid-boss.

He spoke again, icily.

“Know your place and act accordingly. Even if you were chosen as a saint by the gods, you are still a commoner. Do you think it’s proper etiquette to have the sons of various noble factions meet in front of the third prince?”

‘Oh no.’

She knew the implicit rules and factional seriousness among nobles.

Even though she was the protagonist, it might have been too much to gather the potential male leads and ask them to teach her.

Seeing her former ally act so coldly, she realized she had crossed a significant line.

But.

-You fool. Why regret what’s done? Can you change it?

Recalling a voice from the past,

Rene straightened her back and steeled her heart.

What would the protagonist of the original story do in such a situation?

Facing injustice trying to control her actions under the guise of authority…

…How about etiquette?”

…Surely, she would have stood up confidently like this.

“What?”

“Etiquette, blah blah. I don’t know much about the order among nobles. But there’s one thing I do know for sure.”

Imitating the protagonist she had seen was not that difficult.

Rene placed her hand on her waist.

With her chest held high, she took a step towards the villain.

“Sir Treja was delighted just to discuss martial arts with Oparn.

“Sir Circlaire was full of passion exploring directions outside of circle magic with me.

“Sir Luke was satisfied with informing the church and the royal family about the danger of the World Tree.”

In a gathering where everyone was content.

She turned the tables, asking if he had come just to quibble over etiquette.

“…You certainly have a sharp tongue.”

“Thank you for the compliment.”

“But, you should also be mindful of others’ perceptions.”

Tapping his foot, he did not ease the pressure on her.

“What do you think the outside world sees when they look at you? It’s more than enough to cause unnecessary misunderstandings.”

Oh, the worries.

She tempered her thoughts before responding to the overly concerned man.

“Goodwill between people can’t be hindered by mere honor.”

“Huh? That’s some overconfidence. Do you really think those men have any affection for you, who holds only the title of a saint?”

“I sought friendship, but there’s no reason they couldn’t have genuine feelings.”

“You really don’t know your place. Do you believe noble men would truly give their hearts to you?”

“That’s how flirting works. Barriers of status or honor are minor issues in comparison. Nobility, huh. If someone is sincere, they can overcome even being a member of the royal family!”

Recalling the bond she shared with the third prince.

She confidently voiced her opinion again.

“Is that all you wanted to say? If so, I’ll take my leave.”

As expected of a DLC boss.

Throwing such a hurdle in what seemed like an easy romance.

Still.

‘I think I handled it well enough without backing down. Geez, he’s tough for an ally.’

With nothing more to say, Rene walked past him, inwardly smiling in victory.

“…Flirting?”

His question was drowned out by a sudden strong wind, leaving her unable to hear it properly.

Round 89

Prev | TOC | Next

The Kkumuris were diligently working to develop the village. They had not only built houses for the slimes but also storage facilities to keep harvested crops individually, a building to store seeds, and even a place for Alfheim to rest when visiting.

Now, they were paving paths between the buildings and the fields while also landscaping the surroundings with remarkable skill.

“They seem lazy but are actually quite diligent.”

Thanks to their efforts, the once barren plain was transforming into a charming fairy tale village.

Kyu-seong was sorting harvested onions into items and non-items, organizing them neatly. Slimes were busily moving around, helping with the work.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! You’re working so hard!”

Ara, who had been helping for a while, noticed Kyu-seong sweating and dashed off somewhere.

“Drink some water!”

Ara came back carefully carrying honey water in both hands, but by the time she reached Kyu-seong, only her wet hands remained as the water had leaked out.

“Oh no, it’s gone!”

“Looks like you’ll have to make another trip.”

Kyu-seong, finding her adorable, didn’t stop her and watched as Ara went to get more water.

After the second attempt also ended in failure, Ara, puffing up her cheeks, looked around.

“Oh!”

Ara spotted Bokkeum playing with Gomgom. She quickly approached Bokkeum, lifted him, and dashed back to the hot spring.

“Drink some water.”

Watching this, Kyu-seong’s expression hardened slightly. Surely, she wasn’t planning to give him water that Bokkeum had drunk?

Though he often entrusted Bokkeum with various foodstuffs and items, having him regurgitate water seemed a bit much.

“Ah, Ara?”

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! I’m coming! Just wait a bit!”

Kyu-seong paused his sorting. Soon, Ara returned with Bokkeum, who had drunk his fill of hot spring water and was now puffed up.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, drink while you work!”

“…Thanks. You’re the best, Ara.”

As Ara held out Bokkeum, Kyu-seong reluctantly closed his eyes, not wanting to reject her innocent goodwill.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, what are you doing? Use your hands to catch the water.”

“Huh?”

Just as he thought he’d have to drink directly from Bokkeum, Kyu-seong awkwardly cupped his hands.

Drip, drip—

The water trickling out felt oddly lukewarm. Bokkeum spat out some water, and Kyu-seong, catching a bit of it, nodded.

“Haha… It’s fine. The water is really, no, quite good.”

“If you need more, just say so!”

Several days had passed since they visited Dasom Orphanage.

During this time, Kyu-seong frequently visited, watching Ara practice her dance every other day.

Her movements were still awkward, but at least she seemed to be following the sequence, which was a relief.

‘Her clumsy moves make her even cuter. Hehehe.’

While Kyu-seong was lost in these thoughts, Ara opened a box she had temporarily placed on the ground.

“Eat a lot!”

Ara took out a blue slime shard and poured the hot spring water from Bokkeum onto it. It seemed excessive, almost as if she feared it might drown, though that was unlikely.

As a puddle formed on the ground and Ara stirred the slime shard in the water, Kyu-seong finished sorting the onions.

“About half and half?”

There were slightly more non-items, but the yield was still high.

Taking the harvested onions to the storage built by the slimes, Kyu-seong checked the surplus produce that had started to accumulate.

“Wow.”

As the number of family members increased, the consumption of crops also grew, and since they had started supplying the guild, it would take a while for the warehouse to fill up. However, there was a lot of growth potential.

With two slimes appearing each day and the expansion of fields inside the Dungeon of Gluttony, their production could rival that of any corporation. Moreover, the workers required no salaries and managed everything as long as they were provided with room and board, so expanding the farmland did not significantly increase Kyu-seong’s workload.

It was an ideal situation where the drawbacks of farming were eliminated, leaving only the benefits.

“Hehehe.”

-Giggle.

One of the slimes mimicked Kyu-seong’s silly grin.

“Oh, this isn’t the time for that.”

Kyu-seong handed the basket of onions to the slime that was imitating him and hurried out of the dungeon. Today, he was scheduled to meet Baek Tae-seop again and personally deliver the last fruit juice.

‘Even though he’s been declared fully cured, he said he wanted to take the last dose just in case.’

It was a sort of performance. Baek Seung-hyun, Baek Tae-seop’s son, had wanted to visit in person for this commemorative event, but Kyu-seong refused. To Kyu-seong, Baek Seung-hyun still seemed like a patient who had just finished detoxification, so he preferred to handle it himself rather than burden someone who might still have aftereffects.

“Ara, let’s get ready to go out.”

“To the orphanage? We went there yesterday.”

“No, today it’s somewhere else.”

Ara, who had been submerging a slime shard in a puddle, paused for a moment before suddenly shaking her head.

“Next time.”

“Huh?”

Kyu-seong was taken aback by Ara’s unexpected refusal and slumped down in despair.

‘Is Ara… not wanting to play with me anymore?!’

Was she growing up, or was she in a bad mood? While these thoughts swirled in Kyu-seong’s mind, Ara spoke.

“Today, I’m resting.”

“Ah, Ara. We’re going to make pizza.”

At Kyu-seong’s words, Ara’s tiger ears perked up. Her quivering ears looked pitiful.

“Even so, I’m resting today! I’m tired from dance practice!”

“Oh, really? Then I’ll go alone.”

Despite the lingering regret in his voice, Ara’s back only twitched slightly, and that was it. In the end, Kyu-seong gathered Bokkeum and stood up sadly.

After Kyu-seong disappeared with Bokkeum, Ara, who had been turned away, cautiously looked around. Confirming that Kyu-seong was completely gone, she put the slime shard back into the box.

“Mm!”

Then, she clenched her fists and stood up with determination.

“It’s a surprise gift!”

Recently, Ara had been interacting more with children her age (?) and had learned an important fact: the value of Kyu-seong.

‘How old is Ara?’

‘Three thousand five hundred years old!’

‘Oh? So Ara is older than your dad?’

‘Dad? Kyu-seong Kyu-seong!’

‘Ara is lucky to have a dad who always cooks delicious food and plays with you every day.’

‘It’s great!’

‘You should always be grateful. Otherwise, we’ll take your dad away.’

‘Gasp! How do I keep that from happening?!’

‘Well…’

Remembering the conversation from the previous day, Ara picked up the box and dashed off. She pondered about the surprise gift, an expression of gratitude her friends had mentioned.

‘For Kyu-seong Kyu-seong…!’

Ara arrived at a building used for storing miscellaneous items. Though it was called miscellaneous, most of the items belonged to Ara. Inside the building was Ara’s hat collection on display. Ara loved wearing things on her head, so a display had been made for her collection.

There was the straw hat she first received from Kyu-seong, a motorcycle helmet from Jeong So-yeon, a wide-brimmed, airy hat, a perfectly fitting baseball cap, and a hip beanie.

Among the various hats, Ara put on the straw hat displayed at the very front.

“Mm!”

Add a bag to this. Now she was ready. It was time to venture out.

-Knock, knock, knock! Are you there?

“Hm? Oh! Frey!”

Just as Ara finished preparing to leave, Frey arrived, glancing around while riding a starlight bug.

-Ah, Lord. The hat suits you well.

“Hehehe.”

-Where is the Grand Lord?

“He has left!”

-Oh, didn’t you go with him?

“I am now preparing a surprise gift!”

-A surprise gift?

Frey tilted her head in curiosity. Ara grinned widely and whispered into Frey’s ear.

“I’m preparing a surprise gift for Kyu-seong Kyu-seong. It’s going to make him very happy.”

-Oh, as expected of the Lord. A meticulous plan. The Grand Lord will love it.

Gomgom and the slimes nearby watched the whispering duo with tilted heads, but they simply found the scene delightful.

“Then I’m off!”

-Have a good trip! Leave everything here to me!

“Okay!”

Ara rubbed her blushing cheeks, filled with excitement and nervousness at the thought of going out alone for the first time without Kyu-seong.

“Let’s go!”

* * *

‘Sniff, sniff. Do slimes also go through puberty?’

Facing an entirely unexpected issue, I was on my way to the Iron-Blood Guild in a taxi, lost in worried thoughts. In the early days, I had occasionally left Ara in the dungeon or at home due to my busy schedule. However, she had never refused when I asked her to come with me.

“Sir, we’ve arrived.”

“Oh, thank you.”

Before I could dwell on my worries any longer, I arrived at my destination. I sighed deeply as I got out of the taxi and stood in front of the Iron-Blood Guild.

“…This is amazing.”

My concerns about Ara faded briefly as I took in the vast expanse of the Iron-Blood Guild’s grounds. Ara Hongryeon also boasted a tall building, but the scale here was entirely different.

The grounds were absurdly large, divided into sections like the technology building, education building, administration building, research building, medical building, and management building. The Iron-Blood Guild was even recognized as an autonomous district.

Knowing that such a prestigious guild had taken an interest in me was overwhelming.

‘I’m looking forward to the post-contract period!’

Seeing this immense sight in person made me slightly excited. Moreover, having established a connection with Director Choi of the Terror Guild would boost my value even further.

“Oh! Are you Mr. Lee Kyu-seong?”

At that moment, someone from the group in front of the massive gate hurriedly ran over to me and asked. Given the scale of the guild, I thought it was normal for there to be many people around, so I nodded.

“Yes, that’s me.”

“Ah, thank you for visiting the Iron-Blood Guild. I’ll notify the representative immediately.”

“Yes.”

As I nodded, the person who greeted me waved to the people at the gate. Suddenly, a group of people rushed over to surround me.

“Uh?”

Caught off guard, I let out a dumbfounded sound as the crowd gathered around me. It turned out most of them were bodyguards, and some were guild staff there to guide me.

‘Is this really necessary?’

While I was still processing this, the staff member who first spoke to me said, “I’ve informed the representative. Let’s go inside.”

“Y-Yes, okay.”

Nodding awkwardly, I entered through the main gate and saw a waiting vehicle.

“Please, get in.”

I knew the grounds were vast, but needing a car to get around was unexpected. As soon as I got into the vehicle, I felt the eyes of the nearby people focusing on me. Since they weren’t the ones waiting for me, they all looked at me with curiosity.

I found it strange too. What on earth is happening right now?

“Thank you very much for visiting us today. I apologize for the delayed introduction. My name is Oh Min-joo.”

“Oh! Awakener Oh Min-joo!”

“You know me?”

“Of course. You’re quite famous within the Iron-Blood Guild…”

“Thank you for recognizing me.”

The guide in front of me, smiling, was one of the top-ranked Awakeners in the Iron-Blood Guild. It’s puzzling why someone of her stature would be assigned to guide a mere guest.

“We’ve arrived.”

The vehicle stopped, and as the door opened:

“Mr. Lee Kyu-seong! Welcome to the Iron-Blood Guild!”

“Huh?”

Strangers greeted me warmly.

Earl Liam and the other nobles dragged Viscount Steel, who lay sprawled in the middle of the internal affairs meeting room like a limp frog, to the edge of the room.

“It seems Viscount Steel’s reaction proves my method is correct, don’t you think? If anyone still has doubts, I can demonstrate again right before your eyes.”

Ian’s bright smile made Duke Blake and Earl Liam feel an uncontainable rage simmering inside them.

‘It won’t be easy to cut off the tail like with Baron Helington.’

Given the situation where the Emperor didn’t think Viscount Steel was the end of it, Duke Blake considered using this opportunity to clean out a few disliked nobles.

Despite the heated gazes directed at him, including from Duke Blake, no noble dared to step forward.

“In that case, it seems safe to say the Third Prince has sufficiently proven his claim. What do you all think?”

Even though the Emperor asked the nobles, they all kept their heads down and didn’t answer.

Seeing no one respond, the Chancellor beside the Emperor spoke up.

“Your Majesty, I believe the Third Prince’s demonstration was so perfect that no one could refute it. Since the Third Prince has made such a significant contribution, how about rewarding him according to the principle of merit and reward?”

Duke Blake shot a fiery glare at the Chancellor, but the Chancellor remained unfazed.

“Ian, since you’ve made a great contribution, it’s only right to reward you. Is there anything you desire?”

“Your Majesty, if you hadn’t appointed me as the Tax Inspector, I wouldn’t have discovered this. I was merely carrying out your orders, so I don’t think it warrants a reward.”

When Ian declined the reward, which the Emperor expected him to accept eagerly, the Emperor raised an eyebrow.

“Even if you think it’s not enough for a reward, denying you would set a bad precedent. Speak freely of what you desire, Third Prince.”

Despite the Emperor’s urging, Ian continued to bow his head in refusal. The Emperor then looked at the Chancellor.

“Chancellor, what do you think we should do?”

“It’s right to reward him for his great contribution to the Empire, but if he doesn’t want it now, how about we postpone it to the next opportunity? We could give him a bigger reward if he accomplishes more.”

After considering the Chancellor’s suggestion, the Emperor asked Ian one last time.

“Is there really nothing you want?”

“It is an honor that Your Majesty has asked several times. However, I have one request instead of a reward.”

Ian’s statement made the nobles start murmuring. They found Ian’s pretense of modesty irritating.

“Speak.”

“I wish for Your Majesty and the Chancellor to manage this scanner and tablet that I devised.”

“How can we manage something you created?”

“I devised it merely as a means to help the Empire run more effectively. I had no intention of seeking personal gain. If it benefits the Empire, that alone will satisfy me.”

Throughout history, showing dedication to one’s group rather than personal gain has always left a good impression on superiors. Ian slightly lifted his head to check the Emperor and the Chancellor’s faces, seeing faint smiles forming.

Some nobles admired Ian’s answer, which showed his commitment to the Empire, while others looked at him with hostility.

“If that’s your wish, I will accept it.”

Duke Blake couldn’t hide his suspicion as he watched Ian relinquish his rights over his invention along with the reward. It didn’t make sense for someone vying for the crown prince position to act without ambition. Ian must have been aiming for something greater.

‘He’s hiding something.’

Duke Blake’s thoughts were interrupted by the Emperor’s words turning the focus back to the nobles.

“Duke Blake, we have clear evidence of tax embezzlement. What should we do about it?”

“Embezzlement of taxes is a grave crime under the laws of the Empire. Viscount Steel should be executed, and his family should be exterminated.”

The severity of Duke Blake’s words made the other nobles gasp. Knowing which side Viscount Steel was on, they shuddered at Duke Blake’s cold stance.

The First Prince also stepped forward, supporting his uncle.

“As I mentioned earlier, I’d be grateful if you left the handling of Viscount Steel and the implicated nobles to me. I will work with Duke Blake to thoroughly resolve the issues of incense, smuggling, and embezzlement.”

With the First Prince joining, a chilling wind seemed to sweep through the room.

“Duke Blake, you must know the scale of this embezzlement is too large for one person. I trust you will conduct a thorough investigation so that I do not have to order a reinvestigation.”

Duke Blake didn’t avoid the Emperor’s gaze.

“Your Majesty, do not worry. With clear evidence, I will do my utmost to restore the Taxation Bureau.”

As the Emperor nodded, the Chancellor addressed the meeting.

“We have clear evidence of flaws in our tax system. Now that we have tools to accurately track the flow of taxes, I propose a comprehensive reform of the tax system.”

Duke Blake couldn’t hide his discomfort at the Chancellor’s proposal.

“Is that technically feasible?”

Ian answered the question directed at the Chancellor.

“It’s entirely possible.”

Ian’s confident reply made several nobles visibly uneasy. Those who had received money or incense from Viscount Steel began nervously biting their nails, even in the Emperor’s presence.

Duke Blake, realizing that supporting Ian would put a leash on the nobles, fell into deep thought. A possibility crossed his mind.

“Your Majesty, I have one concern.”

“What is it?”

“The current tax information is highly confidential and should be restricted to a limited number of people.”

The Emperor nodded at Duke Blake’s words.

Like a fish in water, Duke Blake began to speak fluently.

“I fully support the introduction of the scanner and tablet to prevent corruption and assist with the Empire’s finances. However, we must address the issue of potential information leaks.”

“Where could the information leak from?”

“While I don’t understand the mechanics of the scanner and tablet, the person who devised them would likely have access to that information.”

“Are you suggesting that Ian, the Third Prince, might leak the Empire’s tax information?”

Duke Blake shook his head at the Emperor’s question.

“Your Majesty, I would never slander the Third Prince, a member of the imperial family. But I must mention that if someone desires tax information, they might threaten the Third Prince or those who developed this technology.”

As soon as Duke Blake finished speaking, a cold chill filled the meeting room.

“Your Majesty, I fully understand Duke Blake’s concern for the Empire. That’s why I suggested earlier that Your Majesty and the Chancellor manage all of this.”

The Chancellor stepped forward to support Ian.

“Duke Blake, you don’t need to worry about that. I will manage everything thoroughly. It will definitely make our tax system much more efficient than it is now.”

With the Chancellor backing Ian, Duke Blake’s face hardened. It seemed the Chancellor, who had always been neutral, had now inclined towards the Third Prince. It was time to withdraw.

Just as Duke Blake was about to step back, the First Prince, Kyle, spoke up.

“Duke Blake, I believe my brother’s invention will greatly contribute to the Empire’s development. While I share your concerns, should we let the fear of pests stop us from brewing wine?”

“Since the Chancellor has assured us of thorough management, I have nothing more to say.”

“Duke Blake, please root out the nobles involved in this embezzlement. If we harshly punish those who have committed crimes, it will make the need for a new system easier for everyone to understand.”

The Chancellor, clearly defining the areas of responsibility, pressured Duke Blake.

“Shall we end the meeting here then?”

“Before that, I will have the culprit detained immediately.”

Ian called for the guards to take Viscount Steel to prison. Earl Liam tried to intervene but withdrew at Duke Blake’s signal.

“I’ll take my leave then.”

Ian thought he would have a drink with Deus when he returned to his room. It was a day worth commemorating, having landed a significant blow on Duke Blake.

***

After the internal affairs meeting, sharp voices echoed through Duke Blake’s office.

“Liam.”

“Yes, Your Grace.”

“Liam, Liam, Liam!”

As Duke Blake’s voice grew louder, Earl Liam’s shoulders hunched more and more.

“Didn’t you say only incense and smuggling were the issues in your letter?”

“I apologize, Your Grace.”

Confirming Duke Blake’s severe expression, Earl Liam decided to bow completely. He felt that any wrong words now might mean he would never see the light of day again.

Crash!

A porcelain vase flew past Earl Liam, shattering on the floor. Only after breaking something did Duke Blake calm down enough to speak in a composed voice.

“What do you suggest we do?”

“It would be best to deal with Viscount Steel quickly. If any strange rumors spread from his mouth, it would trouble us.”

Duke Blake shook his head firmly at Earl Liam’s suggestion.

“I’m not talking about him! I mean the Third Prince. What should we do about him?”

Seeing Duke Blake’s murderous gaze, Earl Liam broke out in a cold sweat.

“I think your hypothesis is correct, Your Grace. It seems he has been hiding his claws until now.”

Duke Blake recalled his previous conversation with Viscount Steel. His breathing gradually calmed.

“You’re right. Now that he’s revealed his claws, we must face him sincerely. I will actively involve myself in matters related to the Third Prince.”

Earl Liam shivered at Duke Blake’s words. It was this aspect of Duke Blake that he both respected and feared the most.

Cutting off potential threats before they could grow. The Blake family’s approach of trampling emerging dangers was the driving force that had allowed them to stay with the Empire throughout its history.

“Can I trust you to monitor the nobles? You can choose the scapegoats yourself.”

“Leave it to me, Your Grace.”

Earl Liam’s eyes filled with delight at Duke Blake’s permission to choose the scapegoats. This misfortune could turn into an opportunity to solidify his own position.

“Your Grace, the First Prince has sent a letter.”

“Kyle?”

As Duke Blake read the letter from his servant, a smile gradually spread across his face.

“Interesting.”

“Is it good news?”

“You’ll find out soon enough.”

Earl Liam wanted to ask Duke Blake to share the contents of the letter but stayed silent as he watched Duke Blake toss it into the fire. Excessive curiosity always led to trouble, so Earl Liam erased the First Prince’s letter from his mind.

Round 88

Chirrik-!

All around, it was a sea of green. This place swarmed with dwarfs with green skin—the Goblin Dungeon.

“Chirrik! There’s not enough food!”

“There’s nothing to eat! Chirrik.”

Goblins, classified as low-level monsters, were numerous here. The dungeon was an ecosystem of its own, with a food chain and monster reproduction. Therefore, if left undefeated and unmanaged, the number of monsters in the dungeon naturally increased. However, the Goblin Dungeon was a low-tier dungeon. Furthermore, goblins, despite their appearance, were monsters known for their love of shiny things and mastery in crafting. As a result, goblin dungeons were like treasure troves for humans.

So, it was strange that the goblins had not been culled and had multiplied to this extent.

“We need to tell the King!”

“Let’s go find the King! Chirrik!”

A horde of goblins rushed off somewhere. They arrived at a building that resembled a grand temple, a place far more extravagant and splendid than the rest.

“Grrk!”

The gatekeeping goblins growled. Unlike ordinary goblins, these were almost as large as orcs, though they were still short.

“We need to see the King!”

“Let us in! Let us in!”

Blocked from entering the temple, the goblins set up camp right at the entrance and started shouting. Some even had red headbands they had prepared earlier. The gatekeepers, apparently used to such scenes, sighed and just watched.

“Hunger strike!”

“Let us in! Let us see the King!”

“But isn’t our hunger strike because we have no food? Chirrik?”

“Hunger strike!”

As days passed, more goblins joined the protest. When the temple’s front plaza was nearly filled, someone finally emerged from inside.

“It’s the King! Chirrik!”

“King! Please, give us food! Chirrik!”

A goblin with red skin and a dazzling crown on its head stepped out, distinct from the others.

“Silence.”

“…”

“…”

The red goblin’s command brought instant silence. Satisfied, the red goblin spoke again.

“My dear fellow goblins, I am pleased to see your faces.”

“Sniff! I love you, King!”

“We believe in you, King!”

The goblins, who had been protesting, instantly transformed into fervent fans, cheering at just a few words. The Goblin King, soaking in the adulation, tilted his head slightly, inviting more praise. Instantly, the protest turned into a praise fest.

“King! King!”

“Just seeing your face fills me up!”

“You’ve finally answered our call! The King is a god!”

After basking in their adoration for a while, the Goblin King raised a hand, bringing silence once more.

“My dear fellow goblins, I, Mammon, understand your hardships. I have not shown myself to you because I have been working on a solution to this problem.”

“Oh! As expected of our King, Chirrik!”

“Aah, I’m dizzy. The King is so amazing.”

“Chirrik! Someone fainted here!”

“As expected of the King! Such charisma, making others faint with just words!”

While the goblins fussed over a fainting comrade—who had actually fainted from hunger-induced anemia—the Goblin King Mammon continued to speak.

“We will soon venture outside! We will seize numerous territories and claim abundant food!”

“Outside?!”

“F-Finally!”

Everyone gaped at Mammon’s declaration. In fact, cracks had been forming that allowed passage to the outside for some time. However, Mammon had prevented anyone from leaving until now, and the moment had finally arrived.

“On that day, we will avenge the humans who ruthlessly trampled our lands and caused countless sacrifices! We will take all the food they have cultivated with their blood and sweat!”

“Oooh!”

“Revenge! Revenge for my 156th brother!”

The goblins were elated by Mammon’s proclamation. Having been attacked once before, the goblins were driven by the hope of both vengeance and obtaining food.

“But not immediately!”

“Huh?”

“Hunger strike! Hunger strike!”

The goblins, who quickly changed their attitudes, started getting heated again. Mammon, however, continued speaking calmly despite their fickleness.

“We need sufficient preparation! If it weren’t for me when the humans invaded, we would have faced a miserable defeat! Thus, I need your support!”

The goblins recalled the past. The crazed humans with their fiery eyes sweeping through their kin, and their own helplessness.

“S-Scary. Chirrik!”

“We need to prepare! We must do it twice, no, three times!”

Aside from Mammon, the goblins were just regular goblins. As low-level monsters, they trembled and regained their composure.

“Therefore, starting today! I will raise your taxes!”

“Huh?”

“Hunger strike?”

Mammon grinned slyly.

“Taxes are necessary to prepare for battle! I ask for your enthusiastic support!”

* * *

Ara held a slime shard, eyes wide open. Mr. Baek and I watched anxiously, swallowing dryly.

“So? What is it?”

“This is…!”

It felt like one of those ‘we’ll be back in 60 seconds’ moments. Ara, still wide-eyed and clutching the slime shard, finally spoke again.

“It’s a slime!”

“…”

“…”

I waited a bit longer, hoping there was more to it. But Ara, looking proud, just stared at Mr. Baek and me.

“…Huh?”

“That’s it?”

Seeing our less-than-enthusiastic reaction, Ara tilted her head in confusion.

“Hmph… We already knew it was a slime?”

“Oh, you already knew?”

Something about her tone seemed off. Was she making this up?

“It just cried and was frustrating?”

“Gasp.”

Ara’s harsh critique was surprising. What kind of slime was it?

‘This tiny shard holds a power level close to a 7th-grade magic stone, and it was just a crying, frustrating slime?’

But could there be such a strong slime other than Ara? The world is vast and full of mysteries yet to be uncovered.

‘Why is it in this form now?’

The item name was “slime shard,” so it was obviously a slime. But how could I restore it to its original form?

My ability as the Slime Lord allows me to control and command all slimes. In other words, no matter how strong this shard slime was, I could make it my subordinate.

“How can we restore that slime to its original form?”

“Maybe by giving it lots of delicious food?”

Ara’s question-like statement revealed her uncertainty. It was puzzling, as slimes typically disintegrate upon death, yet this one remained in shard form.

“Hmm.”

Since it was a slime shard, maybe it could undergo liquid synthesis. However, when touched, it felt as hard as a rock. As I pondered this, Ara picked up a piece of cherry tomato from the salad and brought it close to the slime shard.

Her innocent action made me smile involuntarily as I watched her adorably…

Chomp!

‘Chomp?’

I heard a sound that shouldn’t have been possible. Blinking in disbelief, I noticed the cherry tomato Ara had been holding was gone.

“Did I just imagine that?”

“I saw it too.”

Mr. Baek nodded fervently in agreement. It seemed the slime shard had consumed the cherry tomato in a flash, although we didn’t see it clearly.

“Oooh!! It’s eating well!”

Ara clapped her hands in delight. She then picked up other pieces of food and brought them to the slime shard. Focusing closely, we saw the food disappear with incredible speed, just like before.

Clap, clap, clap!

“Oooh!”

Ara beamed with joy, like a proud pet owner watching their pet’s impressive feat.

“I never would have imagined this. We conducted various experiments within the guild but never thought to feed it.”

“Who would have? No one expects an item to eat food…”

Wait a moment. How much does this thing eat? My household already consists of big eaters, and now even an item is consuming food?

‘…I guess I’ll have to work even harder.’

With newfound determination, I asked Ara, “Do you remember what kind of slime it was?”

“Hmm, I don’t remember. It’s too old.”

Given Ara’s claim of being 3,500 years old, it was understandable she’d forget. Although I didn’t believe her age, even I can’t recall many friends from kindergarten without constant contact over the years.

After that little episode, we finished our meal. Once Ara’s dance practice ended, she tugged at my sleeve and asked, “Can I do it again?”

“Really? Should we come every day then?”

“Can we come every day?!”

Ara’s eyes widened in excitement. With the event approaching soon, we could manage daily visits for now.

“Kyu-seong,”

“Ah, yes, So-yeon.”

“Why don’t you stay over for the night?”

At Jeong So-yeon’s suggestion, Ara’s eyes widened and her mouth dropped open in excitement.

“Can I really stay over?!”

Spending a night with friends seemed to be a thrilling idea for Ara. Seeing her so excited, I couldn’t bring myself to say no.

“Is that okay?”

“Of course!”

Jeong So-yeon nodded with a smile.

“Wow! As expected from Jeong So-yeon!”

“I’ll go inform the headmaster.”

“Thank you.”

So, we ended up staying the night. Though I was slightly concerned about leaving the field unattended for a day, it wasn’t a big deal since I’d stayed overnight at my parents’ place before. The slimes managed everything anyway, but my overprotectiveness made me worry unnecessarily.

“Wow! Then can I go play?”

“Yes, go play with your friends.”

“Yay!!”

Ara quickly handed me the box containing the slime shard and ran off. Watching her dash away, I regretted not arranging more playdates for her sooner.

“Have I been working too much?”

Even though the slimes handled most of the farming tasks, I was responsible for managing, harvesting, and selling the produce. It made me realize that I might have neglected Ara and the other household members.

“I’ve cared for my family, but perhaps I’ve been a bit neglectful toward the slimes.”

Though the slimes probably didn’t feel that way, as Ara had said, farming was the best welfare for them. Plus, they had endless access to delicious food, making it a paradise for them.

Still, seeing Ara so happy made me want to give her more experiences and create better memories for her.

Doomchit doomchit!

Ara was already showing off the dance she had learned today to her friends. Her clumsy dance moves were adorable, making her quite popular among the kids.

Click!

Jeong So-yeon was already taking pictures.

“Hmm.”

And Mr. Baek was observing the scene keenly with the eyes of a shrewd businessman.

“…Is he envious?”

I understood, given he spent his time among rough company. But still, coveting someone else’s child was not okay!

Palace 22

Prev | TOC I Next

Among the nobles, Viscount Steel, in particular, watched Ian’s lips with a tense expression.

“After reviewing the tax accounts of the Taxation Bureau for the past year, I discovered that about 5 percent of the Empire’s taxes are being embezzled.”

Ian emphasized the word ’embezzled,’ leaving the nobles in a state of shock, all wearing dumbfounded expressions.

Duke Blake noticed that neither the Emperor’s nor the Chancellor’s expressions changed at Ian’s statement, sensing something unusual in the atmosphere.

The Emperor asked Ian in a calm voice,

“Five percent of the taxes? The Third Prince must take responsibility for his claims.”

“As the Tax Inspector appointed by Your Majesty, if there is any falsehood in my statement, I will resign from my position immediately.”

Earl Liam glanced at Viscount Steel, who turned red and glared at Ian as he finished speaking.

“His Highness the Third Prince is saying something unbelievable. Who would dare embezzle the Empire’s taxes?”

Ian smiled, seeing Viscount Steel unable to control his emotions even in front of the Emperor.

“Exactly. Even I wouldn’t have known about this if I hadn’t investigated the Taxation Bureau under His Majesty’s orders. Since Viscount Steel, the head of the Taxation Bureau, is here, I’d like to hear his explanation.”

Earl Liam, worried about Viscount Steel getting drawn into Ian’s provocation, tried to hold him back. However, feeling a strong sense of betrayal after handing over everything from the space pouch to slush funds to Ian, Viscount Steel spoke in an agitated voice.

“Are you disregarding the work of the Taxation Bureau? Do you not realize how meticulously we handle the tax accounts day and night? Reviewing a year’s worth of tax accounts in just a few days is impossible. Do you even know how many tax accounts are processed daily?”

“About 450 to 500 a day.”

“What?”

Viscount Steel looked momentarily dumbfounded as Ian accurately stated the number of daily tax accounts.

“And this conclusion comes after reviewing a year’s worth of documents from the Taxation Bureau.”

The nobles’ murmuring didn’t cease. If Ian’s words were true, it meant he reviewed at least 160,000 documents in just a few days.

“Your Highness, this is too much. We are discussing important matters of the Empire in the ‘Internal Affairs Meeting’.”

Earl Liam pointed out the absurdity of Ian’s claim based on common sense.

“Indeed. Even if all the Taxation Bureau staff worked together, it would take at least six months to properly review and organize a year’s worth of documents.”

Viscount Steel added, and the nobles who had experience dealing with tax accounts agreed. It took considerable time to organize tax accounts for their territories, so how could the reckless Third Prince review a year’s worth of documents?

“What will you take responsibility for if my words are true, Viscount Steel?”

“Although it is highly unlikely, I will relinquish my position as head of the Taxation Bureau.”

Ian shook his head at Viscount Steel’s response.

“I don’t want Viscount Steel to take responsibility for this incident.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“I believe every noble involved in this embezzlement should be held accountable. All past records are preserved.”

Ian’s chilling threat made the nobles shudder involuntarily.

“Does it make sense to end this with just a small fry? The gravity of embezzling the Empire’s taxes must be felt directly.”

“S-small fry?”

Despite Viscount Steel’s outburst, Ian didn’t look at him but fixed his gaze on Duke Blake.

‘This seems like quite a good gift, don’t you think, Duke?’

Ian didn’t avoid the intense hostility in Duke Blake’s eyes. It was necessary to make it clear he wasn’t an easy target.

Meanwhile, Adrian, with silver hair like the Emperor’s, looked deeply shocked. He felt a sense of despair at his youngest brother’s disregard for his advice.

On the other hand, Kyle, wearing a satisfied smile, supported Ian’s words.

“Your Majesty, I agree with Ian’s opinion.”

When Kyle suddenly supported Ian, Duke Blake and Earl Liam looked at him in surprise.

“What do you mean by that, Your Highness the First Prince?”

Earl Liam asked, trying to understand the First Prince’s intentions.

“Earl, isn’t it obvious? Embezzling taxes is a serious crime against the laws of the Empire.”

Kyle answered Liam and then looked directly at the Emperor.

“Your Majesty, please allow me to personally verify the truth of what my younger brother has discovered. If there are guilty parties, let me punish them myself.”

‘Interesting.’

Ian thought, seeing Kyle stepping in at the perfect timing. The protagonist of the original story wasn’t to be underestimated.

However, Ian didn’t need to be too greedy. He could take things slowly and acquire them one by one.

It might not work on Duke Blake, but if it caused even a slight rift in the relationships between the other nobles and the First Prince, granting him the right to punish was acceptable. After all, everyone struggles when faced with death.

“I would be grateful if Your Highness the First Prince would step in. After all, aren’t you known for being ‘fair’ in your duties for the Empire?”

Ian emphasized the word ‘fair’, causing Kyle to chuckle before turning an emotionless face to Ian.

“However, if the Third Prince’s words are false, I hope I can also mete out the appropriate punishment. Your Majesty.”

‘As expected of the two-faced Crown Prince. But I already have the Emperor and the Chancellor on my side.’

“Yes, let’s do that.”

At Ian’s calm reply, the Emperor looked around the room with interest.

“Viscount Steel, do you swear you are completely innocent in this matter?”

“Your Majesty, how could I lie before you?”

“I see. But you know, if your words are false, this will not end with you merely stepping down from your position.”

At the Emperor’s cold voice, Viscount Steel turned pale. He instinctively glanced at Duke Blake.

[Do you wish to die?]

Hearing Duke Blake’s voice in his head, Viscount Steel didn’t dare turn his head.

[Just answer the Emperor. If things go wrong, I will ensure your family is spared.]

At Duke Blake’s offer, Viscount Steel answered the Emperor in a trembling voice.

“I am innocent, Your Majesty.”

The Emperor looked at Ian.

“Ian, now prove how you managed to review all those documents in such a short time and find evidence of embezzlement.”

Grateful for the Emperor’s support, Ian addressed the nobles.

“The only reason you doubt my claim is because you believe it’s impossible to review a year’s worth of documents in such a short time.”

Knowing his life was at stake, Viscount Steel interjected.

“How could His Highness the Third Prince, who had no interest in taxes, understand and review a year’s worth of documents in less than a week? Besides, except for the first day you came to the Taxation Bureau, you never visited or spoke with any of the Bureau’s officials!”

“Viscount Steel’s point is valid. So, shall I prove my words? If you remember ‘Detector,’ think of these as similar devices.”

Ian pulled out a scanner and a tablet from his coat.

“This is called a scanner and this a tablet. Rather than explaining, it would be faster to show you.”

Seeing the nobles’ curious eyes fixed on the ‘scanner’ and ‘tablet,’ Ian made a proposal to Viscount Steel.

“To avoid accusations of manipulation, could you provide a few tax accounts from your possession?”

Viscount Steel accepted the proposal, thinking he had nothing to lose.

“I always carry a few tax accounts. Let’s do that.”

Viscount Steel instructed his attendant to fetch the recently written tax accounts from his bag. Shortly after, the attendant returned, panting, with a stack of documents. Viscount Steel carefully checked them and handed them to Ian.

“I trust that Viscount Steel has these documents memorized. I appreciate you bringing not just one day’s worth, but a week’s worth.”

Despite Ian’s seemingly mocking words, Viscount Steel didn’t respond, realizing that arguing further would only make him more entangled.

“Please focus here for a moment.”

At Ian’s request, all the nobles focused on the tax accounts in Ian’s left hand and the scanner in his right hand.

“I will place these documents, of which I know nothing, on this device.”

Ian placed the stack of papers on the scanner and pressed the scan button. The papers fed through the scanner one by one.

“What is that device doing?”

“It seems to be scanning something, as the name suggests….”

The nobles speculated as they watched the scanner in action.

When the scanning was complete, Ian pointed to the tablet.

“After the scanner finishes, the content of the papers is neatly organized and displayed on this tablet.”

Ian showed the tablet to the nobles, who were astonished.

Even though they couldn’t verify if the numbers matched the tax accounts given by Viscount Steel, the data on the tablet was clearly well-organized and easy to understand.

Ian approached the Emperor with the tablet and the stack of tax accounts.

“Your Majesty, please have a look.”

The Emperor nodded slowly, and Ian handed over the tablet and documents.

Although the Chancellor had mentioned it, seeing the device’s function in action for the first time, the Emperor was slightly surprised.

‘So my youngest has other talents.’

“Hmm.”

While the other nobles couldn’t see, Ian clearly noticed the Emperor’s widened pupils, indicating his astonishment at the device.

The Emperor looked at his youngest son, who had created such a device. Previously, he had thought Ian unsuitable for the throne due to his lack of talent in swordsmanship and magic.

But recently, seeing Ian’s efforts, he began to think Ian might have a talent for one of the most important qualities of an emperor: internal governance.

“Viscount Steel should also verify this.”

At the Emperor’s calm voice, Viscount Steel felt not just unease but sheer terror.

“Y-yes, Your Majesty.”

Viscount Steel carefully compared the tablet with the tax accounts he had submitted, his voice hollow as he spoke.

“Is this even possible?”

Desperate to deny reality, Viscount Steel double-checked the tablet’s contents and fainted.

Thud!

Ian quickly caught the tablet before it hit the ground.

‘Whew, I only have one prototype. It would be troublesome if it broke.’

Meanwhile, Viscount Steel, who didn’t receive Ian’s saving hand, collapsed on the floor of the internal affairs meeting room.

Silence filled the room.

The members of the Guild Bright Future were always amazed whenever they saw Hyun-soo.

When Nel first met him, his level was in the 50s.

When Bark met him, he was only around level 60, and it was similar when Lisel met him.

The people here were once better and stronger than Hyun-soo.

But now, that’s not the case.

Moreover, under the name of the lord, it felt like they were relying on his growth.

At this time, the guild quest: National Power Enhancement given by Barad greatly helped ease that burden.

[You have achieved a total contribution of 265%.]

[The national power of the Goyard Kingdom increases by 2.6%.]

[You have gained 130 charisma.]

[You have gained 100 fame.]

Guild quests aggregate the contributions made by guild members.

[You have completed the guild quest with remarkable performance.]

The people who proved their contributions through the Sword of Judgment conversed.

“In terms of contribution, we can get 130 soldiers. Since we currently have only 200 stationed troops, this is a visible achievement.”

“Hyun-soo will be pleased.”

Nel gave a wry smile.

“But it’s still not enough. I heard the Hwarang Guild’s total troops exceed 1,000.”

“Ah…?”

Nel likes to throw cold water on things that are nearly done.

But what needs to be addressed should be addressed clearly.

“We don’t know what will happen soon.”

Nel is using every method to reinforce the troops.

“We killed the fifth and fourth calamities, and even killed demons.”

Calamities worship demons.

“Please, go ahead.”

Bella, Bolson, and Philip stepped forward, representing the Guild Bright Future.

Barad, who was watching them, got straight to the point.

“In recognition of your contributions, 300 troops will be supported to Ballas.”

“…!”

Nel was surprised. Originally, they were supposed to get around 130 troops.

“I saw great potential in the kingdom development projects you mentioned. Although each of those projects won’t immediately fill the national treasury, I judged that they will increase the national power by more than 5%, not just 2.6%, in the future.”

“Thank you, Your Majesty.”

Barad, who was watching them, spoke.

“My worries are lessened.”

Nel saw the king smile slightly.

He had an impressive physique and was known as the Sword King, but gray hairs had increased on his head.

“Talented people who struggled at the Boldrom Fortress, not far from the capital, will relax and return tomorrow, so you all should enjoy the banquet as well.”

“…Thank you.”

Nel felt Barad’s consideration.

It meant to build rapport with other nobles there.

In fact, nobles from all over the country had gathered for this national power enhancement event.

Nel and the members of the Guild Bright Future started to walk.

Nel conveyed this delightful news to Hyun-soo.

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: That’s reassuring. Will you come back after the banquet?]

[Nel: Yes, you miss us, don’t you?]

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: Just a little ^^?]

[Nel: Haha, I’ll be back as soon as possible. By the way, is the crafting to become a legend going well?]

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: …It’s not easy.]

Nel tilted her head.

It was rare for Hyun-soo to say something like that.

‘I should finish the banquet quickly and return.’

[Nel: I believe in you!!! The greatest blacksmith, Master Hyun!]

Nel finished the guild chat and headed to the banquet hall.

Hyun-soo looked at Nel’s guild chat window and gave a wry smile.

He glanced at the Twin Dragon Sword, which was about 80% complete.

As he picked up the hammer to start forging again, he unconsciously stopped.

“Hoo, hoo.”

Hyun-soo took a deep breath.

“It’s too heavy.”

Hyun-soo had said it wasn’t easy.

The overwhelming pressure was too much for him.

This amount of Snowstone was all that existed in this world.

‘If I fail this, when will I ever become a legend?’

He would need to be at least level 450.

Just looking at the levels of the current legends made that clear.

Among the top ten legends, not a single one was below level 450.

“I need to create the first of its kind. Will this Twin Dragon Sword make that possible?”

Normally, Hyun-soo was always full of confidence, but this was a different matter.

Creating a never-before-seen grade was a daunting task.

This weighed heavily on Hyun-soo’s shoulders, keeping him constantly tense and making him reflect on his work.

He was plagued by doubts.

“Did I make this sword good enough to be the first of its kind?”

Hyun-soo was approaching this more cautiously than usual.

But excessive caution was stifling him.

He took a brief break from the continuous forging he had been doing for days.

In the blacksmith shop in Gyeongju, there was the charred Twin Dragon Sword.

The one he had made with his father.

‘I need to see it.’

Hyun-soo logged out.

Meanwhile…

“?”

“…?”

“?”

“…?”

The CEO of Blue Inc., Lee Se-jin, and the Special User Management Team were focused on the artifact Hyun-soo was making.

The new grade of artifact was originally scheduled to be released a year later.

They were puzzled because, contrary to Hyun-soo’s words, the notifications they were receiving showed a different story.

[The Snowstone is reacting most intensely.]

“While making something this incredible, he says that?”

Ji-hee’s words made Se-jin understand.

“It’s like a connected chain. An outsider has to be recognized to become a king, and becoming a legend is essential for that. At such a time, the mineral that opened the path was only enough to make two artifacts. Not just me, but anyone here would be under immense pressure.”

“…Despite the pressure, he made it the most perfectly. It’s amazing.”

Tae-seok marveled.

“All Hyun-soo needs now is confidence that he’s doing it well.”

Se-jin was also looking forward to something.

‘We planned to release a new grade of artifact in a year.’

But what if Hyun-soo made such a sword within a year?

‘How much of an impact would it have?’

An article he had read recently flashed through his mind.

[World Ares says it’s time for a new top player to emerge…]

[The public no longer expects the most influential player to remain…]

Se-jin felt his heart race.

Hyun was the first Korean to reach the top in World Ares.

‘But if he becomes the top player…’

It would be a historic event in the Ares world that would shake Korea and the world.

‘Can he make it? With just enough Snowstone to make two artifacts?’

Se-jin looked at the monitor with an expectant expression.

***

Hyun-soo, who had arrived at the blacksmith shop in Gyeongju, took out the great sword from the storage.

On the day of the fire, this Twin Dragon Sword, which he had made with his father, was burned.

Part of the grip had melted, and the once sturdy blade had been crushed under a collapsed pillar.

Hyun-soo ran his hand over the blade.

‘My father and I made this together, but I did all the forging.’

His father had assisted and taught him the technique to make this sword.

As Hyun-soo cleaned the soot off the blade, he was surprised.

‘…What is this?’

Skilled blacksmiths have a keen eye that ordinary people do not possess.

The sound of the blade.

The feel, texture, weight.

And the resulting quality.

Hyun-soo was shocked by this.

“The sword I made in the game is better?”

Seven years had passed.

And Hyun-soo realized the clear reason.

He had made countless swords in the game.

Originally, his father was a master swords maker, and Hyun-soo was a master bow maker.

But by repeatedly forging in the game, he had surpassed his former self.

Memories are sometimes exaggerated.

Hyun-soo remembered the Twin Dragon Sword he made back then as the most perfect one he had ever made.

Of course, if it were shown to the world, it would have been praised as a remarkable creation.

‘This is excellent, it will be as good as the original maker.’

His father’s words came to mind.

That meant.

‘I’ve become capable of making something that surpasses the original creation?’

Hyun-soo’s heart burned with excitement.

It was evidence that his understanding of swords had improved compared to before.

The Twin Dragon Sword in Ares, which he had stopped forging due to doubt, anxiety, and caution.

‘That sword is superior to this one.’

Confidence surged within him.

Hyun-soo quickly returned.

He wanted to complete it as soon as possible.

A sword superior to the Twin Dragon Sword he made seven years ago.

On the bus.

Hyun-soo, returning to Seoul, felt his phone vibrate.

Bzzzzz.

“…!?”

Hyun-soo’s face contorted.

– Breaking news: Boldrom Fortress, located in the capital of the Goyard Kingdom, is under attack by the First and Second Calamities.

Hyun-soo’s eyes wavered.

‘The First and Second Calamities descended together on the capital?’

Nel and he had been endlessly vigilant.

Demons. And because they killed the Fifth and Fourth Calamities, they might be targeted.

He hurriedly opened ZTube.

He clicked on the broadcast titled “Crisis in the Goyard Kingdom!” on the main screen.

Experts were explaining the current situation.

[It’s complete isolation. The First and Second Calamities have taken over Boldrom Fortress and have formed a barrier, preventing external forces from entering.]

[What is Boldrom Fortress?]

[Boldrom Fortress was a fortress within the capital used by the Goyard Kingdom during the war 100 years ago. It lost its function as a fortress after other fortresses were built. Therefore, it was remodeled into a large banquet hall…]

[Breaking news. A national emergency has been declared in the Goyard Kingdom, and the kingdom’s message has been broadcasted.]

The kingdom’s message.

The message, a less intense version of the World Message, resounded among the users within the kingdom.

[Currently, about 600 nobles of the Goyard Kingdom were holding a banquet at Boldrom Fortress…]

[About 30 people have been reported dead…]

[This is a crisis for the Goyard Kingdom and Sword King Barad.]

[Why is it a crisis for Sword King Barad and the kingdom?]

[The Goyard Kingdom gathered nobles from all over the country for a banquet. Hundreds of the kingdom’s top talents are present. In the worst-case scenario, they could all be annihilated.]

[Fortunately, it seems that a fierce battle is still ongoing.]

[It is understood that Bella, the kingdom’s knight commander, is currently inside the fortress. Bella is responding to the enemy…]

Hyun-soo knew the truth.

‘They can’t hold out for long.’

As soon as he arrived home, Hyun-soo connected to his capsule.

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: Are you okay?]

[Nel: On the verge of death ^^;;]

[Bark: Hyun-soo, I’m dying ^^]

[Lisel: Guild master, we need support ㄷㄷ. The First and Second Calamities are over level 400.]

[Hye-ji: Damn! If my level were just 70 higher, I’d wipe them all out!]

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: How long can you hold out?]

[Nel: We can last about 2 hours. Can you get here in that time?]

Hyun-soo looked at the sword that was about 80% complete.

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: Impossible.]

[Nel: No way…]

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: Instead, I’ll send someone smarter than me first.]

[Nel: What do you mean…]

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: Nel, first…]

Hyun-soo relayed instructions to Nel.

[Nel: Understood. But are you confident about making that sword?]

Hyun-soo gave a wry smile.

[Guild Master Hyun-soo: I am confident.]

[Nel is located in a region where guild chat is unavailable.]

The connection was severed by the calamities.

Hyun-soo resumed forging.

A Twin Dragon Sword surpassing the original maker’s work.

Time flew by as he completed it.

Finally, the previously silent Snowstone and system responded.

[The Snowstone protecting the nation reacts most intensely.]

[The system responds to the sword’s creation.]

[The system has stored data from your forging process.]

[It displays the most excellent forging method among all your processes.]

[Effect application rate 100% is applied.]

[The Snowstone’s power is maximized.]

[This will be the most perfect forging method.]

[The system is searching for information on the Twin Dragon Sword.]

He engraved the patterns and neared completion.

[There are two Twin Dragon Swords in total.]

[They will shine the brightest when the two swords are together.]

“…”

Unfortunately, it was true.

The Snowstone responds to stories and desires the most perfect tale.

However, his skill enables one sword to exert tremendous power.

Finally, he realized.

The next name beyond legend.

[The first transcendence (超越) is written.]

A transcendence artifact.

A only one unique artifact that exists in this world.
