Act 133

Prev I TOC I Next

Joshua showed displeasure at his current situation.

‘Damn it, because of my unnecessary meddling… why am I, a noble recognized even in the capital and a member of one of the four great families, in such a predicament?’

To explain this, we need to go back to the time when Herand got beaten up by Orun under the pretext of a ‘Progression Test.’

– “Grandfather, isn’t this enough?”

It was Joshua’s attempt to defend Herand that caused the problem.

– “Joshua, I will also give you a ‘Progression Test.’ Defeat a Demon with one horn and present its horn to me.”

Instead of direct reprimand, Orun chose the ‘Progression Test.’

Originally, the test was scheduled to be held later, but due to Joshua’s mistake, it was hastened a bit. Up to this point, it was an acceptable and not so bad task for Joshua. A one-horned demon was at the level of an ordinary knight, and it was an easy opponent for Joshua, who could handle a sword. Besides, he had the help of his family members and had hunted demons several times.

– “I have failed to earn Grandfather’s trust. Therefore, as a reflection, I will handle this task alone, without any servants or guards.”

These additional words, meant to regain Orun’s trust, were the root of the problem. Joshua had said this to please Orun, who liked bold and manly behavior.

‘Damn scammers…’

Joshua cursed inwardly as he tasted the bitterness of his situation.

“So, you say you approached a demon hunter in the city to get information and were dragged here?”

“Yes… yes…”

“And you were drugged and tied up after drinking a spiked beverage.”

Innocently and without any filter, Joshua explained.

Only then did Julian, who had solved the mystery, look down at him with an indifferent gaze. Joshua, feeling humiliated but knowing that Julian was his only hope to get out of this situation, could do nothing but bow down.

“What a fool.”

Julian’s harsh criticism made Joshua even more miserable. He knew very well that this situation was truly damnable.

Honestly, during the journey to this village, he had been confident he could handle any ambush. However, he hadn’t anticipated that the food would be drugged. This was the limit of a noble who had grown up like a pampered flower in a greenhouse.

“How foolish to eat something given by a stranger without any hesitation.”

“Indeed, it is.”

Julian’s words were echoed by an unidentified giant standing nearby. As Julian glanced at the giant with the same look he had given Joshua, he clicked his tongue.

“Thank you, Brother Julian!”

***

Joshua, freed from his bindings, bowed politely to me. Remembering our first encounter, I was taken aback by his suddenly changed attitude. Although I could have left him there, I chose to release him for an unexpected reason.

‘It wouldn’t hurt to create a debt.’

It seemed the validity period of the previous Replica incident was almost over. And most importantly, I appreciated that during Herand’s beating by Orun, Joshua had attempted to ‘mediate’ in his own way.

He was someone who would do anything to gain Orun’s favor, but who knew he had a conscience?

“What, what brings you here, Brother Julian?”

“Personal business.”

I answered roughly, not wanting to explain further. Anyway, it’s not like Joshua would accompany me…

“Can I join you, Brother?”

What is he saying? Why would he want to come along? For a moment, I doubted his words, but then I remembered his reason for being here. Ah, it must be because of the demon subjugation. He could probably handle it alone, but why bother?

After hearing why he was here, I had a slight idea.

“Are you thinking of catching a one-horned demon with Sir Julian’s help? Isn’t that too obvious?”

Felkor, seemingly sensing it too, glanced at Joshua and muttered.

Seeing my actions towards Joshua, he probably thought of him as a mere underling of the Crypart family. Ordinarily, people wouldn’t dare to act so openly because of the prestige of the four great families.

Kor, Kor, Felkor.

This guy is the heir of the Crypart family. In other words, the next head of the family.

Joshua, after glaring at Felkor for a moment, confirmed that my gaze was still on him and then prostrated himself again.

“I will offer a reward, Brother Julian.”

“A reward? But in this situation?”

“I will cover all the travel expenses for the future!”

“Hmmm.”

I sighed briefly. It’s nice, but it doesn’t quite resonate with me.

“It’s fine, Joshua. Do you think I lack the funds to go somewhere?”

Money was never an issue. I still had the reward I received for guarding Prince Ulysses, and I had sold some of my antique items, so I was financially comfortable.

“Then, I will assist in the battles!”

“Hehe. Joshua, assist me in battles?”

Despite my mockery, Joshua, seemingly desperate, was sweating and looking earnest.

“Are you embarrassed to return empty-handed after boasting so much?”

“Ugh.”

Hitting the mark, Joshua’s face was filled with despair and frustration.

“If it’s something you couldn’t handle from the start, you shouldn’t have accepted it.”

“Exactly. He’s an idiot who doesn’t know his limits.”

Felkor criticized sharply once more, though I barely heard his last words.

What’s with him? Does he have some grudge against the Crypart family? Why is he so sharp?

‘But… taking him along might not be so bad…’

A sudden thought crossed my mind. There shouldn’t be any danger of combat in the Ferente Gorge. I had already taken care of it long ago. Even if there were minor threats, he wouldn’t need to collect the demon horn he wanted.

I can just do my business and part ways there.

“Alright, Joshua. You can come with me.”

Joshua’s face lit up with joy at my permission, while Felkor’s face filled with doubt.

“What use do you have for bringing this guy along?”

I have my reasons.

“Joshua, do you have any cooking experience? Never mind, it doesn’t matter if you don’t.”

“Huh?”

He looked at me in confusion, his eyes asking, ‘What on earth are you talking about?’

It seems he thought he would play a major role in combat, but that’s never going to happen.

“Felkor, bring the luggage and give it to Joshua.”

“Yes? Yes!”

With a beaming face, Felkor brought the horses and luggage, seemingly in a much better mood after following my orders.

“J- Brother Julian… This isn’t fair! I am a member of the Crypart family! Such menial tasks don’t suit me…”

“Joshua, if you want to handle it alone and return to the capital, that solves the problem, doesn’t it?”

At my shameless response, Joshua bit his lip. He could probably handle a one-horned demon on his own. But finding his way there, locating the monsters, and avoiding another scam like the one he just fell for—those were another matter.

‘He’ll follow in the end anyway.’

His pride was trapping him in a position where he couldn’t do anything.

***

After spending a night in the ‘Village of the Defeated’, we headed straight for the Ferente Gorge. It wasn’t far from the village. However, the closer we got to the north, the more the biting cold began to prick our skin.

‘I didn’t expect it to be this cold.’

Although it wasn’t completely the northern region yet, with no snow or ice visible, the wind was quite fierce. Despite wearing more layers, the cold still seeped through.

“Sir Julian, there’s a merchant caravan ahead.”

Fortunately, on our way to the Ferente Gorge, we encountered a caravan heading to another city. After buying a few more clothes from them, I spoke to the caravan leader.

“Cross this ridge and turn right; you’ll see a forest. Inside, there’s a village. Could you deliver the ones tied up there to the city?”

The caravan leader looked displeased, but when I showed the insignia of the ‘Closed Eye’, his expression quickly changed to one of subservient eagerness.

“Of course. We’ll take care of it.”

As expected, a swift change of attitude from someone leading a caravan. In the capital, my face was my insignia. It was a bit disappointing that it didn’t work as well in the outskirts. Still, the insignia of the ‘Closed Eye’ felt like a universal key, which cheered me up a bit.

After parting ways with the caravan, we soon arrived at the Ferente Gorge. With patches of green grass, it seemed like an ordinary forest at first, but the steep terrain soon became apparent. Entering the gorge, a chill ran down my spine. It felt different than usual.

‘Am I scared?’

In a way, one could say ‘Julian’ died here. After fighting a high-ranking demon and losing consciousness, I became who I am now. Because of that, ‘Julian’s’ body seemed to unconsciously fear the air here.

I thought it was just an overreaction or a delusion, but…

‘Even Angelica seems to sense it.’

The shadow wriggling at my feet wrapped around me, hiding from others’ eyes, blinking in concern. It seemed to sense the fear ‘Julian’s’ body was feeling.

‘I’m fine.’

Utilizing fear was something Julian excelled at. Despite the fear blooming deep within my chest, I didn’t stop walking.

‘What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.’

That noble saying was etched into the mind of this lunatic.

“Is it here?”

Though I didn’t see it with my own eyes, my intuition told me that this was the place where ‘Julian’ fought the high-ranking demon.

“Huff… huff…”

Just as I was about to survey the surroundings, I turned my head at the sound of labored breathing behind me. There, I saw Joshua struggling to follow, laden with luggage.

“B-Brother Julian… how about we rest for a bit?”

Covered in sweat, he looked as if he could collapse at any moment.

“Tut-tut, struggling this much with just this? The future of the Crypart family looks bleak,” Felkor clicked his tongue as he looked at Joshua. Furious, Joshua seemed to want to retort but held back.

“Well, let’s rest here then. We’ve reached our destination anyway.”

With that, Joshua collapsed to the ground, as if he had been holding out for this moment. Ignoring his gasping and muttering curses, I slowly took in the scenery.

[Characteristic, <Amnesia> recalls what happened here.]

When I first discovered the traits window, I noticed the ‘Amnesia’ trait. Although it’s a negative trait with only penalties, coming here seemed to be the condition for unlocking it.

In front of me, like watching an old movie, a figure slowly walked into view.

‘A body just like mine.’

The same stride.

Eventually, the image became clear, and I saw the same face as mine.

It was ‘Julian,’ not me, walking towards something.

“You piece of trash, who do you think you’re looking down on?”

The tone was so arrogant that the phrase ‘arrogance knows no bounds’ came to mind. Although the opponent was a demon, it made Julian’s arrogance even more pronounced. Was he flaunting his ego to a demon that couldn’t understand him?

‘The opponent is…’

A Tri-horn demon. The excessive mucus dripping from it seemed related to its characteristics.

‘Cut.’

With that thought, Julian kicked off the ground and slashed the Tri-horn demon’s waist with his sword. At the same time, what I saw was the ‘Moonlight Sword’ imbued with aura. Unlike me, who needs to maintain the aura with a ‘Moonlight Sword,’ he wielded it smoothly with an ordinary sword.

‘Indeed… the original is strong.’

The moonlight sword Julian wielded was so perfectly saturated with mana that it seemed to be in perfect harmony with the sword. However, I didn’t think my current ‘Moonlight Sword’ was lacking. It was just that the lineage had changed according to the user’s perception.

‘Hmm…’

The fight between the demon and Julian continued. He pierced through the mucus again and attacked the demon’s body. Julian had the upper hand, clearly dominating the fight without any chance of losing.

‘Indeed… Julian’s swordsmanship, perfected through muscle memory, is more refined than mine.’

He remembered the teachings of ‘Hayden Reich’ perfectly. This time, I would also learn from the ‘Sword Saint’s’ teachings.

‘The instructional material is here, so if I watch this, to some extent. Huh?’

At that moment, a huge shadow interrupted the blurry ‘memory.’ It was a demon of a different species from the Tri-horn demon I had been fighting. This one had three horns on its head.

‘Could it be that he survived fighting two Tri-horn demons?’

A monster among monsters. Just as I was thinking that, I noticed something familiar about the late-appearing Tri-horn demon’s appearance. But more important than that was:

‘Its horns… are tinged with red?’

It wasn’t just the color of blood. It was a more ominous, primal hue that evoked a sense of dread.

There’s only one phenomenon where a demon’s horn turns red like that.

‘The Red Demon.’

This is a sign of ‘danger’ that appears in the latter half of <Let’s Kill the Demon Lord>.

Round 84

Leaving my fishing father and my mother watching Ara’s antics in the tent, I climbed up to the slime dungeon alone. Seon-ah? I don’t even bother with her anymore. She’ll take care of herself.

“Poispois!”

As soon as I arrived, I called for Poispois, and the purple slime wobbled and appeared.

Poof!

“Alright, Poispois. It’s time to evolve.”

I summoned a level 4 slime that I had prepared in advance. This one had the “Fast Eater” trait. I then immediately started the liquid synthesis that I had been saving.

‘It’s fortunate that I can use liquid synthesis twice now.’

When it was limited to once, I used it at the same time every day to save even a single second of the 24-hour cooldown. But now, I don’t have to do that anymore. Precisely, I only need to use the first liquid synthesis on time, and the second can be used just before the cooldown ends.

Swoosh!

Poof!

In an instant, the two slimes merged, and a familiar message appeared.

[Slime LV.4 and Slime LV.4 are merging.]

[The merging slimes will share all memories and experiences.]

[Please select a specialized ability.]

“Poison.”

The wiggling slime soon went poof and was completed. The purple body remained the same. But there was something new now that it had reached level 5.

“A horn?”

It was more like a bump than a horn. A small protrusion had appeared in the center of its head.

[Poispois (Slime) LV.5]

[A unique slime]

[It is Lee Kyu-seong’s familiar]

[Liquid synthesis available]

[Abilities: Poison LV.4, Mana Detection LV.1]

“Oh?! It has a new ability?”

Mana Detection? I didn’t know what it was for, but it was a new discovery. Maybe reaching level 5 gives a random new ability!

If that’s the case, I should quickly level up Mark2 to level 5 as well.

“Poispois, how do you feel?”

Bloop!

Poispois just wobbled up and down.

With Poispois in tow, I returned to the dungeon of gluttony.

Bloop! Bloop!

“Let’s check out the enhanced poison ability first.”

[Poison LV.4]

[Emits poison that intoxicates the opponent. The intoxicated opponent will be paralyzed in at least 1 minute.]

“Oh, it got stronger!”

The time was significantly reduced. At levels 1 and 2, it took at least 10 minutes, and at level 3, it took at least 5 minutes. Now it only took 1 minute.

At this rate, wouldn’t it surely be able to bloom the Meluca flower?

Poispois, nestled in my arms, jiggled. I brought Poispois not just to use its poison but also to test its new ability.

“Poispois! Mana Detection!”

Bloop!

Standing in the middle of the field, I set Poispois down and shouted. Poispois perked up the small horn on its head and began doing something.

“……”

……

However, nothing happened.

Poispois remained still for a long time and then made a gesture that looked like a shrug.

“I need an interpreter…!”

I had no idea what Poispois’s reaction meant. I thought I was starting to understand the language of slimes, but it seems I was mistaken.

So, we ran full speed towards the World Tree. Come to think of it, I hadn’t seen Pururuk recently. I hope they’re doing well.

– Oh! Great Lord!

“Yeah, I came quickly, didn’t I?”

I set Poispois down from my arms.

Frey looked at Poispois with eyes full of expectation.

– Oh! It’s the Apostle! Our savior…!

“Apostle?”

– All the slimes bestowed by the Great Lord are called Apostles! The Great Lord’s Apostles!

“Is that so? Anyway, let’s try again.”

At the Meluca flower field, Mark2 was flitting around. It noticed Poispois and me and crawled over immediately.

Gulp!

Bloop!

Come to think of it, they hadn’t seen each other in a while.

The two greeted each other warmly and then began working without my instructions. Poispois emitted poison, and Mark2 carefully applied it to the Meluca flowers. They also soaked the surrounding soil with poison.

Watching them, I asked Frey:

“Frey, do you know a place around here with a lot of rocks?”

– There are rocks scattered all over the place, aren’t there?

“No, I mean more like boulders. A place with a lot of boulders.”

– Boulders… There is such a place! I can guide you there!

“Oh, really? Is it far?”

– If we ride the insect, it will take about an hour.

“That’s pretty close!”

Considering the vastness of this dungeon, that was relatively close. The speed of the Starlight Beetle was slower than me running at full speed, so once I knew the route, I could travel back and forth quickly. I still didn’t know everything about this dungeon, so I should plan a thorough exploration someday…

“Can you show me around later?”

– Of course!

For now, it was a bit tricky, and I needed to prepare thoroughly, thinking I’d spend at least a few days exploring. While I was at it, I could check out other places too.

But I couldn’t delay it too long.

According to Frey, winter would arrive in about three months. I should explore as much as possible before then.

Gulp!

Mark2 approached.

Frey immediately translated.

– Oh! It seems all tasks are complete! Thank you!

“Both of you did well.”

Since we were already at the World Tree, I asked Poispois to use Mana Detection again. Poispois’s horn perked up and then it remained still.

Bloop!

Then it started wiggling and headed somewhere. Wondering what was going on, I followed it with Frey and Mark2 to a certain root of the World Tree.

“What is it?”

– It seems something has been detected!

“Oh?”

Poispois stopped somewhere and bounced its body.

– It says there’s something if you dig this soil!

“Really?”

It was near the roots of the World Tree, which were unusually withered. I wondered if Poispois had found a World Tree mushroom but decided to dig first.

Without any tools, I dug with my hands. Surprisingly, it was easy to dig, and soon I hit something hard.

‘What is this?’

I widened the hole a bit and focused on extracting the hard object. It felt solid but smooth to the touch. Plastic? No, why would there be plastic here?

Then it hit me—understanding what I was unearthing.

“A magic stone?!”

I had my suspicions, but it really was a magic stone. Having handled and used many magic stones to enter the Gluttony Dungeon, I could make an educated guess.

I quickly extracted what I assumed to be a magic stone, and it turned out to be exactly that.

“Wow, I can’t believe it!”

A yellow magic stone. In other words, a 3rd-grade magic stone worth at least 500,000 won.

– Oh, a Spirit Stone!

“Spirit Stone?”

– Yes! That’s what we call them!

Ah, right.

I had heard rumors that awakened individuals who kept spirits as familiars fed them magic stones. Their food costs were astronomical…

Anyway, finding a magic stone in an unexpected place made me grin widely.

Gulp!

Seeing my smile, Poispois suddenly shivered.

“Poispois?”

“Oh, my dear Poispois. I never imagined you’d gain such an amazing ability! It’d be great if you could keep finding magic stones like this, wouldn’t it?”

Poispois, your role is now both a fertilizer for the Meluca flowers and a magic stone detector. I’m not saying this out of selfishness; I’m sure it’ll be fun for you too. Haha.

If Poispois finds the magic stones, then digging them out…

‘Gomgom?’

I thought for a moment.

The benefits of having Gomgom dig versus the benefits of Gomgom being Ara’s friend. Which is better?

“Hmm…”

Is it better for Gomgom to stay with Ara?

As I pondered alone, Poispois approached me.

– It says it thinks staying here will be fun!

“Oh, really?”

– But it says the Mana Detection ability can only be used up to five times a day!

“Ah, since Mana Detection is still at level 1.”

Still, it’s something.

Five magic stones a day? No, since there could be duds, it’s not guaranteed to find five each time. But even with that in mind, we could somewhat sustain our supply of magic stones for the Gluttony Dungeon.

‘…Although I got lucky finding a 3rd-grade magic stone just now, 3rd-grade stones aren’t common, right?’

I felt a bit shaky.

Maybe I should use Poispois for magic stone detection, no, mana detection for about a week.

“Poispois, for now, I’d like you to detect mana stones—no, use Mana Detection—and spread some poison around the Meluca flower field. Can you do that?”

Bloop!

Poispois wiggled its body in affirmation.

So, I left Poispois to detect magic stones, no, mana, and left Mark2 in the fairy village for a while to manage the Meluca flowers.

When I returned to where my family was, evening was already approaching. Time had flown by while I was busy all day.

“Oh?”

As I approached the tent, I saw some familiar figures gathered.

It was Pururuk, whom I hadn’t seen recently.

“Oh, Kyu-seong, you’re back?”

My mother greeted me while stroking Pururuk, who was sleeping in her arms. How could Pururuk be sleeping so calmly?

I saw Ara riding on Pururuk’s back, which had grown to the size of a small horse, playing enthusiastically. Her laughter was refreshing.

“Brother, you knew about this cute creature all along…? Guilty. Death penalty.”

“What are you talking about?”

Seon-ah, spouting nonsense, still didn’t put down her camera. My father was engrossed in fishing, and I sat down next to my mother.

“Where did they come from all of a sudden?”

“Oh, Kyu-seong, you don’t know them either?”

“No, I know them. They just haven’t been around much lately. They’re very cautious and sensitive…”

Ara and I had increased our affinity by eating Layla, so they were less wary of us…

‘Ah, my family also ate a lot of Layla, didn’t they?’

My family ate the most crops I grew. Naturally, their affinity with monsters would be high.

Even with the Kkumuris around, there was no sign of caution. Spirits must be okay with them.

“Whew. I need to rest for a bit.”

“Don’t overdo it.”

My father, lightly organizing his fishing gear, lay down on a camping chair. The long chair allowed him to recline comfortably.

“Dad.”

“Yeah?”

“I’m planning to explore this place in a few days. I want to check if there are any suitable building materials.”

“Even if there are materials, can we transport them?”

“That’s a bit of a concern.”

Wait a minute.

I glanced at Pururuk, sleeping in my mother’s arms.

Then it suddenly shivered, as if having a nightmare.

‘Could we use Pururuk for transport?’

Gulp!

All the Pururuks gathered here suddenly shivered collectively.

What’s going on? It’s like they heard a scary story.

Palace 18

Leaving the trembling Leff and Shilder behind, Ian called Wiz to his side.

“Well, Wiz, what do you think of the detector’s effectiveness now that you’ve seen it in action?”

“It seems to have even more applications than I initially thought.”

“Ha, this is just a part of my plan. I hope you understand that.”

“Every day, it feels like I’m seeing a new side of Your Highness.”

“Seeing something new helps dispel any preconceived misconceptions about me, don’t you think?”

“I will definitely relay this to Lady Katarina.”

Shilder was stunned as the guard who had been minding the goods started chatting familiarly with the Third Prince.

Meanwhile, Leff finally realized that the group who had threatened not to interfere if they successfully passed through the inner palace was connected to the Third Prince.

“Captain Shilder, this is all the doing of the Third Prince…”

As Leff tried to explain to Shilder, Ian interjected.

“Captain Shilder, you have committed numerous crimes such as disrespecting a royal, permitting the distribution of prohibited and smuggled goods. What do you suggest we do?”

“I… I knew nothing of this. How could I have discovered such well-hidden items?”

Leff was shocked by Shilder’s attempt to feign ignorance and spoke up. If he didn’t, he feared he would take the fall for everything.

“Captain Shilder, what are you talking about! How could we attempt smuggling without your cooperation?”

Ian chuckled at Leff’s straightforward confession.

“An honest confession is admirable. So, how about you surrender peacefully?”

Ian’s words made Shilder snap to attention. He quickly searched for a way to save himself.

‘If I just burn the evidence in front of me.’

Then, Viscount Steel would report to his superiors. No matter how much the rogue Third Prince protested, those above Steel would be able to handle it.

Resolute, Shilder signaled his subordinates.

Seeing Shilder’s signal to burn the evidence, the guards hesitated. Burning the goods with the Third Prince right there?

But seeing Shilder repeatedly signaling, the guards began to move, glancing nervously at Ian.

“Captain Shilder, it seems you’re wasting several opportunities today.”

Seeing the guards move, Ian spoke to Wiz beside him.

“Wouldn’t my foresight, predicting this situation and informing you in advance, inspire respect?”

Wiz laughed and replied.

“Your Highness reminds me of the dolls children used to play with back in my hometown.”

“Dolls?”

“Yes, the dolls that had smaller dolls inside. The children loved them.”

“Is it to say that the more you look, the more new charms are revealed?”

Wiz nodded slightly at Ian’s question.

“I’ve shown you my charm, now I’d like to see your skills.”

“Let us show you what kind of organization we are to earn your trust as a client.”

With a gesture from Wiz, his subordinates, who had been guarding the goods, moved quickly.

Simultaneously, Wiz moved towards Shilder, effortlessly subduing him despite his resistance, proving his reputation as Katarina’s second-in-command.

“I thought you mostly used your brains?”

“Your Highness, how can one survive the underworld using only their brains? To be recognized as a second-in-command, one must at least have the strength to protect oneself.”

Wiz’s subordinates quickly subdued and brought Leff, Shilder, the guards, and the laborers before Ian.

“Captain Shilder, it’s impressive. Attempting to burn evidence right in front of a prince.”

“Your Highness, please spare me. I must have lost my senses momentarily. I have a sick mother and children at home. I couldn’t survive on my salary alone, so I had no choice but to get involved in this.”

Ian, with pure curiosity, asked. In web novels, he always wondered how much a guard’s salary was, that they could be swayed by bribes and backdoor deals.

Knowing this would be useful for managing soldiers in the future. A sufficient salary prevents officials from engaging in corruption.

“How much is your salary?”

“Excuse me?”

“Your salary. How much is it?”

Thrown off by the unexpected question, Shilder stammered, unable to answer.

Normally, people would express pity for his circumstances or tell him not to make excuses. But to ask about his salary…

“Three gold coins.”

The answer Ian wanted came from Wiz. As expected, the information organization knew even the details of nobles’ undergarments.

“Three gold coins is 2-3 times the standard living costs of an average citizen.”

As Wiz added this explanation, Shilder lowered his head, understanding Ian’s point.

“With that much, you could care for your sick mother and raise your children well.”

Shilder couldn’t speak any further.

“Wiz, please take these people to Katarina’s faction. I need to meet with the Chancellor.”

Leaving the cleanup to Wiz and his men, Ian returned to the palace with a light heart.

***

A warm afternoon.

Viscount Steel whistled cheerfully, waiting for the incense and contraband from the Frank faction to arrive. The thought of his pockets being filled made him happy.

“Sir! There’s a serious problem!”

A servant burst in, causing Steel to frown.

“Sir? Robert, you haven’t shaken off your old habits from your thieving days. You should knock before entering a noble’s room. Haven’t you learned yet?”

Ignoring the reprimand, Robert spoke with a serious expression.

“Sir, the group coming through the Rose Inn was captured at the checkpoint by an unknown group.”

“What, what? What are you talking about?”

Steel jumped from his chair, his voice trembling.

“How can that be? Who would dare attack them when we’re backing them? Do they not know who we are backed by?”

Facing this incomprehensible situation, Steel’s voice grew louder with anger.

“The Third Prince personally inspected the Rose Inn’s carriage and had them taken away by an unfamiliar group. Even Captain Shilder was captured and disappeared.”

Hearing that Shilder was captured, Steel’s heart sank. Shilder was the only one in the guards who knew the role of the incense and their connections.

Dazed by the situation, Steel slumped back into his chair.

“The Third Prince? How could that rogue do such a thing? We had agreed to a deal, why would he do that?”

“The Third Prince found incense and contraband like illegal liquor in the carriage.”

Steel’s pale face turned even more ashen.

“What about Leff? The one overseeing the laborers, what happened to him? Don’t tell me he was captured too?”

“Leff was also taken.”

Hearing that all his close associates were captured, Steel’s eyes wavered.

He knew that the more informed Blake Duke wouldn’t be unaware of this. If he didn’t resolve this, he would face the same fate as Viscount Helington—death or ‘suicide.’

“There’s only one way to survive.”

“Robert, bring all the available slush funds. I must meet the Third Prince.”

Realizing his lifeline depended on Ian, Steel, who normally despised him, used the title “Your Highness.”

“Sir, the weight of the funds will be significant.”

“Isn’t there a spatial pocket?”

“Taking it might be too much…”

Robert cautiously suggested, but received a harsh rebuke.

“You fool! Don’t you realize how dire the situation is? If we don’t stop the Third Prince, we’re both dead. What’s the importance of the spatial pocket in such a situation? If we live, we can plan for the future.”

Startled by Steel’s booming voice, the servant rushed out to follow his orders.

***

An hour later.

With the spatial pocket full of gold coins, Steel hurriedly sought Ian.

After inquiring with the palace staff, he found out that the Third Prince was heading to the Magic Tower. Spotting Ian, who was talking to a black-haired man, Steel called out urgently.

“Your Highness!”

Startled, Ian turned but then smiled upon recognizing Steel.

“Ah, isn’t this our ‘comrade,’ Viscount Steel?”

Hearing the word ‘comrade,’ a glimmer of hope appeared in Steel’s eyes.

“Your Highness, may I have a moment of your time?”

“Of course, I have time to talk with my comrade, Viscount Steel. What kind of conversation do you have in mind?”

Unusually serious, Steel addressed Ian.

“I heard Your Highness visited the inner palace guard at lunchtime.”

“Hmm? Yes, I was there since morning. Isn’t it a royal duty to ensure the empire’s affairs are in order?”

Nodding repeatedly, Steel replied.

“It’s a great blessing for the empire. With Your Highness’s interest in the empire’s affairs, the empire will surely prosper.”

“Haha, that’s not like you, flattering me so much.”

While Ian accepted the praise with a smile, Steel suppressed the urge to curse him.

He needed to save his own life first.

“But didn’t you have something to say? I don’t mind the compliments, but I think you have more to discuss.”

“Oh, right. I heard that laborers and guards were taken away.”

Ian deliberately took his time to respond. Holding the upper hand in negotiations meant making the other party anxious to gain a better outcome.

“Your Highness, they are connected to the Rose Inn, the one I mentioned before related to our deal.”

“I see.”

“Your Highness, without them, I can’t deliver on our deal.”

“Is that so? Well, that’s unfortunate.”

Ian’s unexpected reaction left Steel flustered.

“Excuse me?”

“You’re making me repeat myself today. I said it’s unfortunate. Do you have something else to say?”

“Could you release them?”

With a desperate look, Steel pleaded.

“Without compensation?”

Description: A special masterpiece made solely for Hyun.

No sword can surpass this one.

“Ugh!”

Hyun-soo was astonished.

It shines the brightest.

He understood why he received the notification.

It was because he had achieved Supreme Power +4 enhancement.

In the current Ares, there are no minerals that can enhance an artifact to +4.

Therefore, Hyun-soo heard a notification he had never known before.

“Normally, enhancement stones are supplementary, but this exceeds that level.”

Enhancement stones are exclusive to high-level users.

They are used to become even stronger upon reaching the level and artifact limits.

Some people spend hundreds of millions, even billions, of won to become slightly stronger.

The difference in strength determines the outcome against powerful opponents and affects rankings.

However, this Black Stone offered even more benefits than existing enhancement stones.

– Sword Attack Power increased by more than 50.

– All stats increased by 0.5%.

– Critical hit rate increased by 10%.

– Cutting power increased by 10%.

– Sword Mastery increased by 1 level.

– Passive Skill: Eight Slashes upgraded to Nine Slashes.

Even if seven Black Stones were used and wasted, a single success like this would be worthwhile.

Suddenly, something flashed through his mind.

“I remembered…”

Hyun-soo looked at Supreme Power.

This Supreme Power is the strongest sword desired by Hyun-soo and every user in the world.

Hyun-soo was confined by the fixed idea of creating a new artifact grade through Seolhwa Stone.

“The strongest and best sword in the world.”

Therefore, he couldn’t decide as he searched for something from a legend that surpassed Supreme Power.

“It’s not about making a sword as strong as Supreme Power, but about creating a sword with the power of Supreme Power.”

With just Supreme Power in his hand, Hyun-soo was already strong enough.

Possessing the power of Supreme Power doesn’t mean being equally strong.

“It’s a sword with that level of influence.”

Suddenly, a thought crossed his mind.

Prison Camp.

The fifty assassins who stormed in and the ring blade that defeated them.

“Admiral Yi Sun-sin had several swords.”

Hyun-soo took out the Seolhwa Stone from his pocket.

“He mainly used the ring blade, and I’ve already crafted it while facing the Red Dragon Group.”

A legend that saved the country.

Is there a more excellent legend than that?

Additionally, there were two swords more famous than the one crafted during the confrontation with the Red Dragon Group.

The names of those swords.

“Twin Dragon Swords (雙龍劍).”

Legendary swords in their own right.

In both Ares and reality.

“The Twin Dragon Swords disappeared long ago.”

That’s why they became even more legendary.

There was an ongoing debate about whether Admiral Yi Sun-sin actually used the Twin Dragon Swords.

Suddenly, a conversation with his father came to mind.

“You don’t seem to know, Abyin.”

It was his father’s response when asked if Admiral Yi Sun-sin had actually used the Twin Dragon Swords.

“The one thing for sure is that it became history because people wanted to believe it.”

Sometimes, we exaggerate stories, and they become recorded history.

Additionally, the Twin Dragon Swords disappeared a hundred years ago.

It was a fact that they once existed.

“Shall I try to recreate the history that saved the country?”

And Hyun-soo had already made one.

One of the two Twin Dragon Swords that exist.

The regret was this.

“Only my father knows how to make the other one…”

His father had an exceptional understanding of the Twin Dragon Swords, for which he had taught him the crafting method.

At that time, while crafting with his father, he had thought,

“I want to make such Twin Dragon Swords by myself.”

He couldn’t remember how many times he had looked at the blueprint his father had drawn.

He also couldn’t remember how many blades he had discarded.

“…I’m pretty good at making swords.”

But he was even better at making bows.

As a result, he had created the masterpiece called Jumong’s Bow.

However, the Twin Dragon Swords were different.

‘…The Twin Dragon Swords are the swords I understand and know how to make best.’

Shaaak—

He unfolded the paper.

On the unfolded paper, he began to draw the magnificent figure with enthusiasm.

He asked out of curiosity.

‘What value does the sword of a man more beloved than Haemosu and more renowned than Jumong hold when completed?’

It was unimaginable.

Especially if it was something that had completely disappeared.

And how much power the system would grant it when seen.

Finally, it began.

The Seolhwa Stone that could create two artifacts.

The minerals to make one sword went into the furnace.

‘I can see it.’

It was a path.

A path that might reach the legend.

Just then, a whisper arrived.

[Nel: We have arrived at the capital of the kingdom. We’ll do our best and return.]

The members of the Guild Bright Future were summoned by the royal family.

He understood why they were summoned.

“Lord Barad…”

It was a series of tests.

They were called to be assessed.

And Hyun-soo knew that the members of the Guild Bright Future would do their best.

“During that time, shall I also do my best?”

This sword was different from all the weapons he had made so far.

All the weapons Hyun-soo had crafted were to make individuals stronger.

But this one would be a weapon for everyone.

***

[Guild Quest: National Power Enhancement]

– Grade: A

– Restrictions: Those who received the proposal from Barad

– Reward: 10% contribution and support of 5 soldiers

– Penalty for failure: Decreased intimacy with Barad

– Description: Barad gathered many talents from all over the country to strengthen national power. Accumulate contributions and receive soldier support.

This was the quest given to Nel and the members of the Guild Bright Future who had arrived at the royal court.

“…Make the nation stronger in your own way.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Numerous talents gathered to have an audience with the king.

They needed to contribute to the nation’s strength in their own ways to accumulate contribution points.

Nel knew this was an opportunity.

‘A chance to gain many soldiers!’

Soon, Barad sent away those who had come from all over the country.

The remaining ones were the top contributors who built the current Goyard Kingdom.

There was Philip, the northern commander who guarded the Aram territory until recently.

Bolson, who managed the finances of Goyard Kingdom.

And Bella, the current head of the Knights.

Barad took in each one of them with his eyes.

Finally, Barad revealed his true intentions.

“This reminds me of the past when my father also summoned people like you from all over the country.”

Just like he had called those from the current Ballas territory.

“No matter how outstanding a king is, he cannot stand alone if those who protect him are not.”

It’s a natural principle.

Barad was able to reach this position thanks to the people in front of him.

Also, thanks to those who steadfastly stayed by his side, like Bella and Marquis Luckburg.

Barad had not yet decided to make Hyun-soo the king.

There were too many qualities he needed to see in Hyun-soo.

“I remember. The late king looked at us and smiled, saying, ‘Not bad.'”

Bella vividly recalled those memories.

“Hyun alone established Ballas territory. But if his retainers cannot support him, it would be a big problem.”

Moreover, such people would become the talk of the populace.

Especially because they were outsiders, there was still much whispering.

“Your Majesty, what level of contribution do you expect from them?”

“…About 70% of what you all accomplished would suffice.”

This national power enhancement is influenced by various factors.

It means that as long as they can contribute to strengthening the nation, it’s acceptable.

However, the expectations for Hyun’s retainers are low.

“See for yourselves what kind of people they are.”

Barad had already shared the battlefield with them.

They were strong.

But in the Goyard Kingdom, including NPCs, there were at least ten thousand such individuals.

“We will comply.”

The three stepped forward.

After they stepped out, Barad looked out the window with a bitter expression.

“Hyun.”

He believed the late king felt the same way at that time.

The position of a king must be cold and rational.

“If they are incompetent, I must teach them how to expel them.”

Of course, expelling them doesn’t mean literally sending them away.

As Ballas territory grows, their ranks will also rise.

They might become the stars of the kingdom in the future, but he plans to suggest replacing them with other capable individuals.

His mouth tasted bitter.

Even if Hyun-soo ends up hating him, there is no other way.

“Hyun-soo is too gentle and soft.”

Sometimes, someone has to give harsh advice.

And Barad was exhausted.

The aftereffects of responding to “Friend, help me” were still deep in his bones.

He went to his chamber, seeking sleep and focusing on recovering his condition while staying in the royal palace.

A few days later.

The period to accumulate contribution points had passed.

Talents from all over the country.

Most of them came from various territories.

Their contributions were determined as a collective group.

The royal family also distributed soldiers based on contributions, providing an opportunity to strengthen their territories.

Then, Bella, Philip, and Bolson entered, and shortly after, the members of the Guild Bright Future arrived.

They wore symbols of anvil and hammer.

Barad, with his kingly expression, looked at the bowing individuals and drew a sword.

The Sword of the King’s Judgment.

With this, Barad had previously assessed Hyun-soo’s progress.

And Barad withheld the results from Bella when she asked, “What percentage did we achieve?”

These three had collectively contributed a 1.3% increase in national power.

The late king had spoken after sending them out.

-They are excellent talents, Barad.

Finally, the Sword of the King’s Judgment emitted a radiant light.

But then.

Wooooooong—

“…?”

Barad was surprised.

The sword was resonating strongly.

It was similar to when he first assessed talents like Bella, brought in the minister Bolson, and met the knight Philip.

No, it was a much stronger resonance than any of those times.

And then.

[The national power of the Goyard Kingdom increases by 2.6%.]

Barad’s eyes wavered, though his exterior showed no sign of it.

“Leave now.”

After sending them out, Barad was confused.

Bolson spoke up, seeing the king’s puzzled expression.

“Your Majesty, can we keep them with us instead of sending them back to Hyun?”

“???”

Barad was astonished. Bolson saying such a thing?

He looked to Bella for answers.

“You said it, Your Majesty.”

Referring to Barad’s words:

“One Hyun established Ballas territory. But if his retainers do not support him, it would be a big problem.”

Bella spoke in a fervent voice.

“It wasn’t one Hyun who created the current Ballas territory; it was those capable individuals along with Hyun.”

Philip chimed in.

“They will strengthen Hyun’s kingdom.”

Bolson added.

“Hyun should be pleased. Such outstanding and remarkable talents are doing their best for him.”

The three were not sparing in their praise. Notably, their expectations were sky-high.

Bella continued.

“They will become pillars.”

The king was impressed.

And curious.

What had happened for them to praise these individuals so highly?

Survival 134

“You two seem quite close.”

“It’s a misunderstanding. I am devoted to serving the divine. My interactions with the third prince are purely formal.”

At these subtly dropped words, the saintess tilted her head in curiosity before softly smiling. A smile that perfectly matched her delicate and pure appearance. But I knew better. Misunderstanding, my foot. In the original story, several candidates for the male lead got closer in such ways. However, seeing that the distance between the two on the sofa wasn’t too close, I felt relieved.

‘It seems in the DLC, the third prince has been included as a new male lead candidate. I’m a bit envious.’

From a mid-boss to a male lead candidate, what a promotion. He was a villain who couldn’t escape death in any route, but now he’s on an upward trajectory.

Also,

‘It would have been nice if our Luciana could have turned into an ally too!’

The saintess’s calm and mature older sister and a supporter who steadfastly assists and backs her up—an ice beauty character. How beautiful is that!

Of course, I know it won’t happen since she’s already established in the ‘villainess’ position. Swallowing the sigh rising in my chest, I faced them again.

I was the one who opened the meeting.

“Regarding the breaking off of the engagement, I have not yet conveyed it to my lord.”

“…I understand. It’s the lady of the Speda family we’re talking about.”

-Breaking an engagement? It was an agreement forged between the Speda duchy and the imperial family. Don’t mention it again.

Family honor. It was obvious that Luciana would oppose it, as anyone who knew her even a little could predict.

“Shall I tell you what I have in mind?”

“Speak.”

“The imperial side should change Luciana’s fiancé.”

Until yesterday, I had no intention of replacing him with the third prince.

‘Luciana’s partner has to be at least a male lead candidate to meet my standards.’

But now?

The saintess herself was guaranteeing it.

Leon Manhett was, without a doubt, a male lead candidate.

Of course,

‘I’ll use it as a smokescreen.’

I don’t know what the game company was thinking when they rehabilitated that guy and made him a male lead candidate. A sinister and dark guy like him doesn’t suit the pure and kind Luciana at all.

When the third prince’s succession becomes secure, it will be easy to break off the engagement at an appropriate time.

“Do I understand your suggestion correctly?”

“Yes. The crown prince seems uninterested in my lord. How about informing the imperial family and changing the engagement target to the third prince?”

It would also be beneficial for the third prince. It was an opportunity to have the enormous Speda duchy as an ally. After all, wasn’t his goal the emperor’s throne? Whether it was breaking the engagement by mutual agreement or negotiating for the third prince to request the breakup first, it could be done.

Of course, there was a possibility that the third prince’s side might refuse to break the engagement.

‘Even if it’s DLC, the third prince wouldn’t have changed all his actions in the game. Just catching a few of those would be enough to make him beg for the breakup.’

It was a way to minimize the risks related to Luciana’s honor.

Then,

“W-wait a moment!”

A hurried voice interrupted the conversation. Not just me, but even the third prince turned his gaze to René’s rude outburst. While it could be overlooked due to our alliance, I was puzzled by the urgency in his tone.

“Your Highness Leon, I believe it would be best to reject the current proposal.”

“Oh? Why is that? I’m all ears for my confidant’s advice.”

“In the end, isn’t this man just shifting the crown prince’s responsibility onto you, Your Highness Leon?”

‘…Tsk.’

She saw right through it.

The third prince would bear the disgrace that should have fallen on Luciana.

Yes, that was my plan.

But I’m not without conscience.

I had prepared compensation equivalent to the benefit I sought.

However,

“It’s not something said for free. In exchange, the Speda duchy would support the third prince’s ascension to the throne.”

“You’re brazenly saying that without even getting Lady Speda’s approval.”

‘This woman… she hits where it hurts.’

At René’s remark, the third prince’s expression turned indifferent.

Indeed, it was obvious that obtaining the cooperation of the Speda family required their consent.

That included Luciana’s own intentions.

…Given that I haven’t even mentioned the topic of breaking the engagement yet, my proposal was practically futile.

If Luciana had any intention, she would have brought conditions for negotiation by now.

“Anyway, I oppose it. We can’t stake the third prince’s honor on an unguaranteed bait.”

-Zap.

Our eyes met midair, and sparks flew between me and the saintess.

Even without words.

Even without an intermediary, our intentions were clear.

-Can you handle this?

-Don’t you dare try anything with His Highness Leon.

A nerve-wracking standoff between those serving different masters.

There was no way to back down.

‘…Wait, why is the saintess so earnest about the third prince?’

I serve Luciana, but that shouldn’t be the case for her, right?

“Haha, let’s put aside the conflict for a moment. This is a negotiation, after all.”

The one to mediate between us was, of course, the third prince.

“And Sir Byron, that proposal is indeed difficult.”

“Why? Is it difficult for you, Your Highness?”

“That’s part of it, but it’s also for Lady Speda.”

He raised a hand to stop René, who was about to protest, and added quietly to me,

“Do you think I’m any different from my brother?”

“What do you mean by that…”

“Even if I were to be engaged to her, she would ultimately be disappointed, just as with my brother. I am not interested in her either.”

The third prince crossed his arms and asked me once more,

“Do you think your lord, Lady Luciana Speda, would want such an outcome?”

“…Hmm.”

“Me bearing the disgrace is a separate matter. How would she feel about another broken engagement?”

…To be honest, I only considered the circumstances Luciana was in.

I thought that if the third prince took responsibility and announced the breakup, public opinion would hold him accountable for everything.

Therefore, I didn’t consider Luciana’s own feelings in the matter.

‘No, these are all just excuses.’

How could I fail to consider the feelings of my most cherished character, who should be my top priority?

I was a failure as both an attendant and a fan.

With deep guilt, I immediately nodded.

“Let’s scrap it.”

“You don’t hesitate.”

“An attendant’s duty is to fulfill their lord’s desires. I will deeply take to heart the third prince’s advice.”

As I sincerely bowed to him for pointing out what I had overlooked, René, with a pouty face, chimed in,

“I don’t mind as long as it doesn’t harm His Highness the third prince.”

“René, do you have a sharp plan?”

“Well, if it comes to this, we’ll have to make the crown prince himself declare the breakup.”

That’s no easy task.

Three sighs fell upon the table.

“My brother would never take the initiative due to his pride.”

“It’s not just pride. He would also fear the criticism that would follow.”

Breaking off an engagement made between noble families carelessly would mark him as an honorless beast.

Even for a crown prince who commands the empire, the stigma of being the one to first mention breaking the engagement would not be taken lightly.

“I have something to say.”

In the now heavier atmosphere, the saintess spoke up.

She held a newspaper in her hand.

“What is that?”

“It’s a newspaper from a few days ago. Sir Byron, please take a look.”

The front page of the newspaper she placed on the table prominently featured a repulsive figure.

“The crown prince…”

“It’s from the noble faction’s press. The article contains quite a few critical points.”

Silently, René pointed to a part of the interview included in the article.

[What is the most important virtue for a leader of a nation?]

[A willingness to listen to the people? The strength to repel any external threats?]

[No. It is the ability to ensure the continuation of the royal line.]

[In that sense, the crown prince’s current injury raises doubts about his ability to fulfill that duty properly.]

The meaning was simple.

-If an impotent man becomes emperor, the line will end!

-Or prove otherwise, if you can?

A provocative tabloid.

The article, crafted to mock the crown prince of a nation, made the third prince’s brows furrow.

“It’s unpleasant. They’re just eager to bring down the royal family.”

“But it’s certainly an unexpected method.”

“A method? Sir Byron, what method do you see in this newspaper?”

The crown prince’s injury, huh.

I could understand why she showed this.

And also,

The one behind this scheme.

‘She’s more radical than I thought.’

Ignoring her as she averted her gaze, I turned to the third prince beside her.

“In short, wouldn’t it be enough if the crown prince were rendered incapable of maintaining the engagement?”

Even if he were engaged, if he couldn’t produce an heir, the engagement would naturally fall apart.

The third prince, tilting his head in confusion, soon widened his eyes in shock as he grasped the implication.

“…Hahaha! This is indeed an unexpected solution. Turning my brother into an impotent man. As expected of René.”

After laughing heartily for a while, the third prince cleared his throat.

“However, it’s practically impossible. My brother is a warrior with exceptional swordsmanship and a strong aura.”

The third prince shook his head, saying that there was no practical way to realize such a plan.

“You won’t know until you try.”

“…Sir Byron? If caught, we would all be executed for insulting the royal family. Take it as a joke.”

But seriously,

Isn’t it worth trying?

In the original story, the protagonist and the crown prince often lost their lives together in a game over.

Even now, he hadn’t avoided getting kicked in the groin by me.

Isn’t this the most realistic way to declare a breakup with Luciana without any trouble?

“Sir Byron, your eyes look dangerous.”

“I will consider it as a last resort.”

Sigh.

“If you do attempt it, aim for the dispatch training.”

The third prince, while seeming to dissuade me, subtly provided a concrete suggestion.

‘Indeed, for someone blinded by the desire for the throne, this is an excellent opportunity.’

The crown prince’s loss of sexual function would mean the third prince ascends to power. No wonder he was excited.

“By the way, what do you mean by dispatch training?”

“According to recent reports submitted to the royal family, the chaos caused by monsters throughout the empire has worsened. Even with the involvement of second and third-year students, there’s a shortage of manpower.”

The third prince gave a chilling smile.

“In the form of dispatch training, my brother’s guards would be fewer. It would be the best time for you to accomplish the task.”

It irked me a bit that he was openly trying to involve me in his plot.

“…I will keep that in mind.”

I could almost feel my foot itching to kick the crown prince where it hurts.

Act 132

Prev I TOC I Next

Inside the tavern, an uncomfortable silence lingered.

I had tried to avoid a fight at all costs.

There was a certain sense of familiarity in the fact that I could lead the situation like a ‘game.’

Moreover, recklessly using force to secure my safety was very much ‘Julian-like.’

That’s why I thought I had resolved it well by using my brain.

But it doesn’t feel like it ended properly.

It feels like I left without finishing my business.

More precisely, it’s my fault for not considering that ‘Felkor’ could be such an idiot.

I feel increasingly sorry for future Felkor.

How will he bear all this karma?

With these thoughts, I decided to observe the surrounding atmosphere.

With a sliver of hope.

If I could resolve this with words, wouldn’t that be the best?

Even though I am part of the ‘Crypart’ family, it’s not such a big connection…

The air was brimming with a reddish haze above most people’s heads, except for Felkor, who still didn’t know what he had done wrong.

Intense hostility.

From one extreme to another, the perception began to shift.

It took only three seconds for the dormant doubts to sprout and blossom again.

‘This is bad.’

Finally realizing the situation, Felkor’s pupils started to shake as if in an earthquake.

I’ll deal with you later.

Clang─!

The bustling tavern grew quiet, and amidst it, the sound of metal slowly reached my ears.

The sound of hands reaching for their weapons.

The tense atmosphere felt like a bomb about to explode at any moment.

“Haah!”

The first to light the fuse appeared.

One of those drinking with Felkor drew his sword, kicked the table, and charged.

Where should I hit?

There are too many places to strike.

Though he was a soldier deployed to the north, he looked like a child displaying crude swordsmanship to my eyes.

Thunk!

I decided to swing my fist lightly at first.

I’m not a villain who brutally dismembers people with a sword.

Anyway, the man flew back faster than he had charged.

The force was so strong that he broke through the tavern door.

Crash!

The deserters looked at me with astonished eyes as they saw the broken door.

Seeing such overwhelming strength with their own eyes, their reaction was understandable.

“Huff, huff…”

Gulp.

Degrid and the bandits, who were watching, swallowed nervously.

“I didn’t intend for it to come to this.”

Adding these words towards them, I drew my ‘Moonblade’ and prepared for battle.

[Moonlight imbues the sword.]

[Using the trait, <Moonlight Sword>.]

As I channeled mana into the sword in my hand, the Moonblade naturally began to emit a gentle moonlight.

“Ah, ahhh…!”

Seeing the Moonblade, Degrid’s mouth opened wide enough to fit a fist and might never close.

A cry close to a lament.

He seems to recognize the ‘Moonlight Sword.’

Well, it is Julian’s signature swordsmanship, so I would have been disappointed if he didn’t recognize it.

“The aura that handles moonlight, slit eyes・・・・・・, and that disturbingly unpleasant polite speech!”

Disturbingly unpleasant? I don’t think it’s that bad.

If you hear it often enough, it can become rather endearing, right?

“Moreover, the Crypart family…”

Degrid, recalling what Felkor had said, muttered those words and glared at me, clenching his fist.

“Julian, Julian Crypart Frason… the mad dog of the royal family… the smiling executioner!”

“Hahaha…”

As I laughed, Degrid’s face stiffened.

I wasn’t laughing for any particular reason.

It’s just that hearing my old nickname after a long time made me feel a bit nostalgic.

“The insane psychopath killer!?”

“A lunatic like that came to capture us!?”

“No way!”

The bandits added their own comments.

Hearing such vertical drop in their evaluation of me made me chuckle.

I feel as though I am becoming increasingly pathetic.

‘But thanks to that nickname, it seems like we can negotiate.’

Degrid and his men recognizing the name ‘smiling executioner’ has made the situation somewhat hopeful.

This means they understand the immense power Julian possesses.

Subjugating them without a fight shouldn’t be too difficult.

By stimulating the primal human emotion of ‘fear,’ I can subdue them.

That’s not even a challenge anymore.

“If you know who I am, it would be wise to surrender. If you don’t want to see bloodshed…”

When I gave them my creepiest smile, they gulped.

Though they hadn’t experienced it themselves, they knew that no one who had defied the smiling executioner had ever survived.

It was said that I even killed infants with a smile.

The reddish haze had now turned purple.

Yes, let’s resolve this quietly.

“What are you all doing!”

Well, not everything goes my way.

There’s always someone like this.

Degrid, though shaking uncontrollably, raised his voice.

He acted like a triumphant general, but he wasn’t unafraid.

The ‘fear’ was evident above his head.

“If Julian is here, we’re dead anyway!”

“But Degrid…”

“If we surrender, he might spare us!”

The rest looked at me with desperate eyes, so I nodded.

“I would prefer if we resolved this quietly.”

Though I spoke with the brightest smile possible, Degrid didn’t accept it calmly.

Rather, the ‘bright smile’ seemed to appear chilling to him.

“Have you ever heard of that mad dog sparing those who broke the rules!”

Hmm… honestly, neither have I.

If I had shown such mercy, such a dreadful nickname wouldn’t have spread.

“And that idiotic noble! If he’s really from the Crypart family, we’re all dead even if we surrender!”

Degrid’s words filled the deserters’ eyes with determination.

If we’re going to die anyway, they might as well bet on the option with the highest odds.

So, this is how it ends.

Sometimes, the infamy of a name can backfire.

‘Damn.’

Good or bad.

It’s a reputation that does no good.

***

Of course, the deserters, including Degrid, were no match for me.

Attacks using aura rendered their defenses useless, and their attempts at surprise attacks were easily countered.

“Ugh, ugh…”

I thought as I looked at the sprawled deserters.

Should I have gone all out from the beginning?

‘There was no need to use Angelica after all.’

Wriggle.

As the situation settled, the large figure lying on the ground began to move slowly.

It was Felkor, the one who caused this mess.

“Sir Julian… what is happening here?”

Oh, now he’s pretending to be drunk?

His next line will be…

“I don’t remember anything.”

Right. That had to come out.

The guy who collapsed as soon as the fight began was holding his temples, complaining of a headache.

“Sir Felkor, you become a dog when you drink.”

“A dog…? What do you mean by that… Ugh!”

When I kicked Felkor, he looked at me with confused eyes.

Leaving him behind, I approached the fallen Degrid, grabbed his head, and lifted it.

His disheveled face irritated me a bit, but my question took precedence.

“Sir Degrid, where is the idiotic noble you mentioned earlier?”

“Ugh, ugh…”

I’m not particularly interested in the Crypart family, but since it’s come to this, I should check.

“B-below… the cellar…”

The cellar?

Ah, it seems the cellar is under the wooden floor.

After tossing Degrid to the ground, I looked for a way down.

It wasn’t difficult to find.

Just like in a cliché, lifting the carpet revealed the stairs going down.

‘Well then.’

Let’s see who this idiotic member of the Crypart family is.

As Degrid said, there was a person bound in the cellar.

“Mmpph, mmph!!!”

With a gag in his mouth, all the person could do was groan, with a sack over their head.

“Who… is this?”

Felkor, who had come down with me, looked at me with a puzzled expression.

How should I know?

Thinking about how this guy made me draw my sword unnecessarily, I felt a surge of annoyance.

‘Those deserters are not getting any leniency.’

The very act of kidnapping someone is a crime, implying they are involved in human trafficking.

Perhaps this outcome was for the best.

It was a bit unpleasant to get my hands dirty.

“Release him.”

Reeking of alcohol, Felkor approached the bound man.

As his rough hands removed the sack, a familiar face was revealed.

“Mmmph… mmph!!!”

Joshua?

“Put the sack back on.”

“Mmmph!!!!!”

When Felkor tried to cover him again at my command, Joshua began to thrash around wildly.

His eyes, burning with anger, seemed to say:

‘Release me now, you damned fool.’

I was almost certain of it.

“Sir Julian, are you really going to put the sack back on him?”

Sensing that he knew me, Felkor hesitated and asked again.

“No, let’s just remove the gag for now.”

I was curious.

Let’s hear why Joshua is here.

“Cough, cough! Ah!”

Once the gag was removed, Joshua started coughing repeatedly.

As he began to calm down, the coughing subsided, and eventually, he looked up and met my gaze.

“Did you come to rescue me, Brother Julian?”

“Of course not.”

“Then how did you end up here…?”

“That’s what I should be asking. Joshua, why are you here?”

“Well…”

For some reason, Joshua hesitated.

“As expected… put the sack back on him, Sir Felkor.”

“No, I’ll tell you everything, Brother Julian!”

“You seem to be misunderstanding something. Whether you talk or not, I was going to put the sack back on.”

The reason Joshua is here?

Honestly, I wasn’t particularly curious.

I only came down because I was intrigued by the claim that the captive was a member of the Crypart family.

“Please, don’t do this. Help me just this once! We are both members of the Crypart family, brothers, aren’t we?”

Joshua, who had become utterly servile, had completely lost the arrogance he had when I first saw him.

But does that mean I owe him any loyalty to save him?

‘Probably not, right? Do I really need to?’

Round 83

“There are quite a lot of them.”

Those were the first words from my father when he saw the Kkumuriss. He had changed from his fishing clothes into work clothes and was now inspecting the creations made by the Kkumuris.

“They’re not efficient, but purely from an aesthetic standpoint, they have good sense. And surprisingly, they’re quite sturdy.”

“Really?”

“Hm? Looking closely, these materials are….”

My father’s eyes gradually widened as he examined the slimes’ house more closely.

“No way, they built this with these materials? Haha, amazing.”

“Why? Is something wrong?”

“No, it’s not that it’s wrong. I’m just a bit surprised they managed to pull off something so incredible. Well, since they aren’t human, they might be able to use magic…”

The Kkumuriss had crafted everything using ordinary materials from around the field. Out of curiosity, I asked the Kkumuriss to build a new structure, and they quickly made a statue of a Kkumuris.

– Heh heh.

A Kkumuris, looking proud, made a sound with a blank expression.

My father, who had watched the entire building process, kept chuckling in disbelief.

“If we just tweak the design a bit, I wouldn’t have anything else to do.”

“Is it that good?”

“It’s just magic. They’re doing something unbelievable.”

Well, spirits do use magic. But the spirit magic I know is for attacking monsters, not for construction.

While my father and I were chatting, Seon-ah was filming as usual, and my mother was playing with Ara and Gomgom.

By the way, how long is she going to keep filming?

“Didn’t you say you’re going to upload it on YouTube?”

“I’m learning to edit. I’m going to do it in earnest.”

Seon-ah answered without taking her eyes off the camera. Her posture was as professional as it could get.

My mother was casually cooking with the newly harvested crops, using tools made by the Kkumuris. The mini furnace they initially made had been upgraded to a large kitchen.

Upon seeing this, my mother was impressed, saying it was better than our home kitchen, which couldn’t be true.

Though I just laughed it off earlier, my father, who had finished his inspection, said:

“You know products made from magic stones are getting popular these days, right?”

“Yes, it’s a growing trend. They’re eco-friendly and easily decomposable once used up.”

“What I’ve been studying lately is interior design and construction using magic stones. I was thinking of trying it out, so let’s start by making that kitchen work with magic stones. The good thing about magic stones is that they don’t need separate electrical wiring.”

“You’re still studying? I thought you retired.”

“People learn their entire lives.”

I didn’t know my father was still studying. Anyway, if we did this, the kitchen here might really become better than the one at home.

“But you’re buying the magic stones.”

“Of course. This is my place, so I should pay for it.”

“Then let’s upgrade the kitchen first before we start any serious construction or planning. It’ll be a good experiment.”

With newfound enthusiasm, my father started checking things on the tablet he brought.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ! Time to eat!”

Meanwhile, Ara called me as my mother finished cooking. The slimes were gathering around too.

“With all these kids to feed, it must be hard for you.”

“I don’t cook for them. They just eat on their own.”

“But isn’t it burdensome to have so many new family members all of a sudden?”

“That’s why I hurriedly expanded the field a bit.”

Of course, we have enough food for ourselves now, but considering guild deliveries and other factors, we did need surplus production. So, I quickly planted some crops in the field that had been tilled but left empty.

Before I knew it, the first carrots and tomatoes we planted had reached level 3, and they tasted even better with each level they gained. Now, there’s quite a difference compared to the level 1 crops we initially harvested.

‘…If they reach level 10, could we conquer the world with food?’ A novel-like thought crossed my mind, but I just laughed it off.

As I was enjoying the happiness of eating the potato pancakes and green onion pancakes my mother made, something fluttered and flew toward us from a distance.

“Oh, Frey. How did you know to come here?”

-Everyone is here! Kkumuri told me. They seem to be connected and share information about what’s happening.

“What?”

I didn’t know they had such a function. We had been living together for days, but I was completely unaware.

‘If I use this well, I could monitor the field and other places too.’

It was an unexpected function of the Kkumuris.

-How have you been, mother and father?

“Oh, we meet again, our Frey. How have you been?”

-Yes, I’ve been living peacefully.

Speaking of which, there was no news about the Meluca flower. It had been quite some time since we planted the seeds, but there was no update. It’s been over two weeks since we last visited after harvesting the World Tree mushrooms.

“Frey, how’s the flower?”

-Sigh, I urgently came to discuss that with you, Great Lord.

Judging by the sigh, there seemed to be a problem. I started thinking about Poispois’s evolution that I had prepared in advance and spoke to Frey.

“Shall we go talk?”

-Yes.

I left my family behind and only took Bokkeum and Mark2 with me. With my parents and Seon-ah around, I could leave Ara in their care. This might be the first time I’m away from Ara since we met.

“Ara, I’m heading out. Have fun and behave, okay?”

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong , come back safely! Call if it’s dangerous!”

Oh, come to think of it, if I take a Kkumuri with me, it could relay any situation to them. Although I can’t understand the Kkumuri’s language, Frey can translate for me here, and Ara can translate there.

As Ara waved her hand, Gomgom followed suit beside her. Soon, the Kkumuris also waved their hands blankly, which was quite funny. I picked up one of the waving Kkumuris.

Since I needed one to communicate, the one I picked up made a sound with a blank expression.

-Heh heh.

Hey, you’ve just been kidnapped.

* * *

I ran, matching the speed of the Starlight Beetle. As always, it felt like the place where the Alfheim live was too far from the field and the entrance.

‘It was so quick when I rode Purruk…’

Can’t I tame Purruk? Taming it just for riding seems a bit much, but if they’re okay with it, then it’s not a problem, right?

Brrr-!

Suddenly, Mark2 and the Kkumuris in my arms shivered. Why? They were catching the wind as I ran, but did they get cold? Anyway, thinking warmly about the welfare of monsters, I arrived at the village.

-Heh heh.

-Heh heh?

The Kkumuris greeted us cheerfully. They were hanging leisurely from the roots and trunk of the World Tree, and surprisingly, they fit in well with the Alfheim.

“You seem to be doing well.”

-They are quite helpful. There’s nothing they can’t make!

It looks like they’re coexisting well. I’m glad.

The only concern was whether there was enough food. When I asked Frey about this, she tilted his head.

“Food? They don’t eat. They just play around or make things all day.”

“Really?”

As I looked at the Kkumuris I brought, it sensed my gaze and made a sound.

-Heh heh?

Come to think of it, there were Kkumuris here too, so I didn’t need to bring one!

“Frey, can you communicate with this guy?”

-Yes, I can.

“Can you ask it if it really needs to eat?”

I assumed they needed food because they ate so happily. But was that not the case? Frey asked on my behalf, and the slime responded with its characteristic blank cry.

-Heh heh.

-It says they need to eat. Oh! They share everything.

“Share?”

Do they share the food and nutrients they eat? What kind of creatures are they? No wonder their eating habits were similar to our Kkumuris, despite having over a dozen of them… It seemed our Kkumuris were supplying the nutrients for the ones here too. Or perhaps they were spread throughout the entire dungeon…?

‘I don’t know how many there are, but, hmm. I don’t think they were in other places.’

With my curiosity satisfied, we moved further inside and saw the Meluca flower field.

“Oh.”

-As you can see, the condition is a bit…

The stems and leaves of the Meluca had grown magnificently. They were so large it was hard to believe they were this big. However, the flowers hadn’t bloomed. Flower buds had formed but looked withered and seemed ready to fall off.

The slimes tending to the Meluca greeted me.

“Hey, guys. Good job. Let’s have some food first.”

They lived on the food provided by the fairies here, but I brought them special treats each time I visited. Today, it was the pancakes my mother made.

While the slimes happily wobbled and ate the pancakes, Mark2 and I strolled through the field.

“Was the poison too weak?”

-When we used the poison you provided last time, the buds formed. But they didn’t bloom in the end.

I had been worried about this. I conversed with Mark2 through Frey.

Mark2 suggested that maybe the poison was too weak for the flowers to bloom.

“I’ll bring a stronger poison.”

-Oh! As expected of the Great Lord! We always trust in you, Great Lord!

There wasn’t even a hint of doubt about how I would obtain it. They just believed I would manage somehow.

The highest-level slimes I had were Mark2 and Poispois, both at level 4. Over the past days, I had prepared another level 4 slime. I was deciding whether to level up Mark2 or Poispois to level 5 first, and I chose Poispois.

‘If level 5 isn’t enough, it’ll be a bit troublesome…’

Still, since the buds formed at level 4, wouldn’t they bloom at level 5?

“By the way, are you still okay? Isn’t your honey supply running low?”

-We’re still fine! We stored enough food for this winter. The problem is next year…

“By the way, when does winter start?”

-Winter is coming soon. Maybe in about a hundred nights?

“Three months?”

It felt like a long time and also not that far off. Winter wasn’t particularly welcome for someone who had just started farming here.

‘Should I make a greenhouse?’

Just in time, there were Kkumuris here.

It would be a shame to just leave it as it is, so I should prepare something to maintain the field even in winter. Since my father was trying to make a kitchen powered by magic stones, using his gained expertise to create a magic stone greenhouse could be a good idea.

“Frey, I’ll be back soon.”

-What?! Can you get the poison that quickly?!

“Yeah, it should be doable right away.”

-As expected of the Great Lord!

Frey’s eyes sparkled as she praised me. I scratched my head, having grown quite accustomed to Frey’s reactions, and took another look around the field.

Oh, before I go…

“I’ll take some honey.”

I think there was a pizza that you dip in honey.

Let’s try it out.

Palace 17

Prev | TOC I Next

The guards stationed at the inner palace were bustling due to the unexpected visit of the Third Prince. Especially, Shilder, who was in charge of the inner palace security, couldn’t hide his anxiety. Today was the scheduled date for the Frank faction’s goods to be brought into the inner palace.

If the rogue Third Prince caused a scene and the goods were discovered, it would be a disaster.

“Your Highness Ian, what brings you to the inner palace guard station?”

Shilder tried his best to hide his nervousness and greeted the Third Prince with a composed expression.

“Captain Shilder, I hope my presence here isn’t causing any inconvenience?”

“Not at all, Your Highness. We are honored by your visit to our inner palace guard station. Everyone will see it as a privilege.”

Despite Shilder’s efforts to appease Ian, he couldn’t deceive Ian’s keen eyes. His trembling smile didn’t match his non-smiling eyes.

“Continue your duties as usual. As a royal who has been assigned the role of tax inspector, I’m here to observe how the inspection of incoming goods to the inner palace is conducted. Would it be right for me to neglect my duties as a royal?”

“It is indeed a model behavior for the citizens of the empire.”

Ian patted Shilder’s shoulder encouragingly.

“And it’s because of diligent people like you who ensure the security of the inner palace that I can sleep peacefully in the palace.”

“Thank you, Your Highness. We will inspect and search thoroughly every day to ensure that no suspicious persons set foot in the inner palace. We always think of the safety of the citizens of the empire.”

Satisfied with Shilder’s response, Ian’s expression brightened, and Shilder let out a sigh of relief internally.

“Who else can we trust if not our inner palace guard?”

“Thank you, Your Highness. Since we are outside and the sun is harsh, may I suggest we move to the guard office? Allow me to escort you.”

“That won’t be necessary. I came to see how the guard station operates, not to be entertained. Please continue your duties comfortably.”

Shilder’s anxiety grew with Ian’s insistence on staying. He prayed that the Third Prince would leave before the Frank faction’s goods arrived via the Rose Inn.

Just then, a carriage approached the inspection point.

“Can you show me how you inspect a carriage? I’d like to see if there are any areas that can be improved.”

“Of course, Your Highness.”

Though Ian was watching, Shilder followed the principles since it wasn’t the goods from the Frank faction yet.

Several hours passed as Ian observed the inspections. Around lunchtime, Shilder signaled one of his subordinates.

“Your Highness, are you hungry?”

“Oh, is it already time for lunch?”

“Yes, Your Highness. We will escort you to lunch. Captain Shilder will remain here until the other guards arrive to take over.”

“Does the captain not leave even for lunch?”

“Yes, that’s correct. Our captain is particularly diligent during lunchtime.”

Caught off guard by the sudden question, the guard had to lie with a trembling voice. They knew from past experience that a successful day would bring extra income.

Knowing the Rose Inn’s carriage would arrive soon, Shilder prayed Ian would follow his subordinates to lunch.

However, Shilder’s wish did not come true.

“Your Highness, wouldn’t it be better to go for lunch?”

“No, I couldn’t leave such dedicated guards to eat alone.”

“But Your Highness, if it’s rumored that you didn’t have a proper meal, we would be ashamed before the Emperor.”

“That might be true. But there’s no need to worry.”

“Pardon?”

“I brought my lunch today.”

Ian proudly displayed the lunch box that Tom had packed for him. Shilder and his subordinates stood there with dumbfounded expressions.

Who would have thought the Third Prince would be so dedicated to inspecting the guard station that he brought a lunchbox in the scorching sun?

The lunchbox revealed a spread of luxurious foods, their aroma unmistakably the work of the palace’s head chef.

“If you’d like, Captain Shilder, you’re welcome to join me. I brought enough.”

Shilder couldn’t hide his astonishment. There was nothing to gain from dining with the rogue prince, and he feared it might provoke him.

“Your Highness, I’m not feeling well today, so I’ll skip lunch and continue my duties.”

“That’s too bad. The cook in the palace prepared this specially for me.”

“The offer itself is an honor.”

As Ian ate his lunch near the inspection point with the detector turned on, the awaited carriage finally arrived.

“Thank you for your hard work.”

Relieved for a moment at seeing Shilder, Leff’s expression quickly darkened.

He wanted to mention the unknown group that had attacked their carriage and disguised themselves as escort guards to infiltrate the inner palace. But the sight of the dwarf man staring at him made him hold his tongue.

Seeing Leff’s dark expression, Shilder grew uneasy. Knowing that the Third Prince was watching him with a strange device, Shilder ordered his men to search the carriage, suppressing the rising feeling of unease.

“Search the goods.”

While pretending to inspect, Shilder approached Leff discreetly.

“The Third Prince is here personally inspecting the inner palace security, so we’ll have to be thorough. There’s nothing problematic, right?”

Praying for a negative answer, Shilder noticed Leff’s face pale at the mention of the Third Prince.

“Captain Shilder, this seems like a trap. On my way here, we were…”

Leff was interrupted by one of the escort guards, who approached and cut him off.

“Master, you need to come with me for a moment.”

Shilder thought it was strange that the escort guard, who should have spoken respectfully, sounded threatening.

“Captain Shilder! That, that…”

“I’m sorry, Captain. I need to have a word with Master Leff.”

“Wait…”

Shilder tried to ask more, but the escort guard dragged Leff away to another carriage.

With things turning out this way, Shilder hoped Leff had hidden the incense and smuggled goods thoroughly. Leff, conscious of the Third Prince’s watchful eyes, checked the contents by stabbing the goods with a knife.

Even with a thorough inspection, nothing suspicious was found, and Shilder felt relieved. He felt like today’s blessing was with him.

“Captain, there’s nothing suspicious.”

“Only sugar. Nothing suspicious at all.”

Hearing his subordinates’ loud reports, Shilder also shouted loudly.

“Proceed.”

With the permission to proceed, Leff brightened and ordered his men to move the carriage quickly.

As the carriage with the rose emblem was about to pass through the inner palace gate, Ian, who had been watching from a distance, stepped forward.

“Wait a moment.”

Ian locked eyes with Wiz, who was disguised as an escort guard, and smiled.

‘Wiz came personally instead of sending a subordinate.’

At Ian’s sudden call, Leff and Shilder exchanged glances. Leff quickly approached Ian and greeted him respectfully.

“Your Highness, the Third Prince, it’s an honor to meet you. I am Leff, in charge of the goods from the Rose Inn. I didn’t want to disturb your meal, so I was trying to enter the inner palace quietly. Is that alright?”

“How considerate of you in such a difficult situation. But bringing dangerous items into the inner palace is unacceptable.”

“Excuse me? Dangerous items?”

Hearing the conversation, Shilder tried to support Leff.

“Your Highness, you might not have seen, but we thoroughly inspected the goods.”

“Thorough inspection? You mean just stabbing a few goods with a knife?”

Feeling wronged, Shilder responded.

“Your Highness, please trust our guard. We inspected more thoroughly than ever.”

“You make it sound like I’m the villain here. But if this is how it’s done, I have no choice but to be the villain.”

“What do you mean?”

Ian looked coldly at Shilder and asked.

“Captain Shilder, can you answer a question?”

“Please go ahead.”

“What is the punishment for someone trying to smuggle prohibited goods or contraband into the inner palace?”

Thanks to the detector, Ian had found not only incense but also contraband that a mere merchant couldn’t import.

‘Good thing I checked the permissible goods list before coming to the checkpoint.’

Shilder felt a jolt of fear but tried to maintain a calm expression. If it were discovered that he allowed the passage of incense and contraband, he would be executed.

“Since I’ve been on duty, such an incident has never occurred. If it did, the perpetrator would be executed.”

‘You never tried to catch anyone, so it never happened.’

Leff, overhearing the conversation, turned pale. The Third Prince’s words clearly pointed to the goods he was transporting.

“Then, let me ask you another question. What is the punishment for guards who fail to properly inspect and allow such merchants to pass?”

Ian’s continued pressure made Shilder’s calm expression falter.

“They would lose their position at the least and be executed if the crime was severe.”

Hearing Shilder’s answer, Ian stared him in the eyes and asked seriously.

“Then, do you think it’s okay to let these merchants pass? Or should we inspect again?”

Shilder made the fatal mistake of rejecting Ian’s last chance. If he reversed his stance, even the slim chance of being wrong could vanish. He clung to the absurd hope that the rogue Third Prince was just causing trouble.

“We conducted a thorough inspection. I believe it’s safe to let them pass.”

Resolute, Shilder’s voice didn’t waver. Hearing his response, Ian looked around and spoke.

“Interesting. I came to check how thoroughly the inspections of goods entering the empire are, and I didn’t expect so many to mock a royal.”

“Mocking?”

“What do you mean by that, Your Highness?”

Surprised by Ian’s words, Leff and Shilder paled.

“Mocking? Bringing a carriage full of incense that clouds the mind and smuggling goods a mere merchant shouldn’t be able to import is not only breaking imperial law but also mocking me!”

Ian’s roar chilled the air.

“Am I wrong?”

“Your Highness, what do you mean? What incense? What smuggling?”

“You still deny it. Then, I’ll show you. If you have eyes, you won’t argue. Bring that carriage.”

At Ian’s command, Wiz brought the carriage, and Ian stabbed it with a guard’s sword. White powder poured out.

Ian tasted the white powder on his finger.

“It’s sweet.”

“Your Highness, sugar is allowed in the inner palace. I believe there’s no issue with the goods in this carriage.”

Shilder tried to preemptively clear Ian’s suspicions.

Seeing Ian’s signal, Wiz and the guards began to pour out the white powder, revealing incense and high-end liquor only official palace-certified merchants could import.

“How about now? Am I still wrong?”

Shilder and Leff, unable to speak, felt their knees weaken.

Strike 173

Prev I TOC I Next

The influence of “World Ares,” the daily newspaper unique to Ares, was significant.

The “World Ares” daily newspaper often covered stories from around the globe.

As a result, a considerable number of Ares users worldwide regularly read World Ares.

And the headquarters of this World Ares is in Washington.

A woman in the conference room spoke.

“Hyun, he is the second blacksmith to be included in the Top 100 after Smith.”

Deputy Director Hannah was quite young.

She, having gone through various elite courses, saw Hyun’s name among the 100 users selected this year on the screen.

She also confirmed the information about Hyun written in the report.

The staff member who advocated for his selection said,

“That’s right. In fact, we initially thought it was a bit insufficient that he had only rung the ‘World Message’ once and pushed his time attack ranking to first place.”

The reason was that Hyun’s face was not well-known.

The chances of someone whose face is not known being selected for the Top 100 are significantly lower.

If his face had been known, the difficulty would have been much lower.

“We determined that his World Message due to demon hunting made him sufficiently worthy of being one of this year’s Top 100.”

“It was an excellent choice.”

Hannah nodded.

“Korea also has its first user in the Top 100 now. This blacksmith named Hyun must have gained many subscribers.”

She closed the report with a click.

“Of course, whether he can maintain it next year remains to be seen.”

Clasping her hands together, she got to the main point.

“There are two months left in the year, and we need to focus on one thing.”

There was something people paid the most attention to in World Ares.

The 100 most influential users in the world?

That was just a stepping stone for one thing.

“Who will become the most influential person in the world this year?”

In October, World Ares selects the 100 most influential users in the world.

And in December,

They select the single most influential user in the world.

Hannah looked at the screen displaying the names of the 100 users.

At the top of the pyramid-like structure, the name of the most famous ranker in the world was written.

“Valhalla, he’s been selected as number one for three years straight. Of course, I acknowledge that he’s a deserving user.”

Hannah felt regretful.

“That’s why it’s boring. If he’s selected again this year, people will stop anticipating the most influential person.”

It’s a natural progression.

“Our World Ares needs a new number one.”

The problem was that they couldn’t create that number one themselves.

Everyone in the conference room shared the same expression,

If the same name is picked repeatedly, people will lose interest, thinking, ‘Oh, it’s that person again.’

“If a new number one emerges at this time, the impact will be greater than Valhalla, who has been number one for three years, especially if that person has star quality.”

“It has to be. Someone new toppling Valhalla, who has maintained the top spot for three years, would be sensational just with that title alone.”

Hannah nodded.

“Exactly, especially if it’s someone with low odds. It would be more explosive. We can use Hyun, whom we just mentioned, as an example.”

She lifted the report she had just closed.

“In fact, even if Hyun creates another ‘Legend Above Legend,’ he can’t be selected as number one. It’s already happened once. But if he shows us something unimaginable, he might have a chance.”

Who will show us the unimaginable?

“An unexpected person becoming number one, how exciting is that?”

People will be eager to click on World Ares.

And that number one would wield immense power.

But this was merely a wish.

After the meeting ended, Hannah walked away.

She entered the Deputy Director’s office and sat down.

“Only two months left…”

She muttered, then soon chuckled.

She had just mentioned how exciting it would be if an unexpected person became number one.

She used Hyun as an example.

There was no big reason.

She simply used him as an example because they were talking about Hyun.

So now, she imagines Hyun in that position.

‘What if he is selected as number one?’

Before entering the meeting, she had heard that Hyun’s blacksmith shop was close to being the number one subscribed blacksmith in Korea.

“If he becomes number one, would the number of Korean subscribers be an issue?”

Of course, it was merely a meaningless thought.

It was a very difficult thing.

Moreover, there wouldn’t be many ways to make Hyun that successful.

Suddenly, Deputy Director Hannah looked at one side of the wall.

In Hannah’s office, there was a pyramid-style board of 100 users that was shown on the screen.

At the very bottom was the name Hyun.

***

Hyun-soo got up after a good sleep and poured himself some cereal.

The news was on the TV.

[People around the world are paying attention to the selection of the most influential user in the world, with only two months left.]

[Currently occupied by Valhalla, who has been called the best ranker for three consecutive years. Analysts overwhelmingly believe that he will be number one again this year, entering the fourth year.]

‘To think I was selected as one of World Ares’ Top 100, and my blacksmith shop’s subscribers in Korea are almost number one.’

It’s a remarkable achievement.

His name could still be found all over the country.

Hyun-soo had certainly risen a lot.

But as he watched the news, he thought.

‘How happy would it be to be selected as the number one by World Ares.’

He was a bit different from ordinary people.

Instead of jealousy, envy, or pointing fingers, he pondered how he could stand in that position himself.

‘Demon hunting was an incredible achievement. But it wasn’t my perfect achievement.’

Hyun-soo had actually contributed about 30% to hunting Grout.

Without Barad and Ben, it would have been a pipe dream.

As soon as he finished his cereal, Hyun-soo stood up.

He needed to improve more.

[Connecting to Ares.]

As soon as he appeared in the virtual reality, Hyun-soo headed straight to the blacksmith shop.

The easiest way for him to improve.

That was through blacksmithing.

He took out the Snowflake Stone from his pocket and looked at it.

The way for Hyun-soo to become a legend.

‘If I create a grade that doesn’t exist in this world.’

And he thought.

The first-ever grade.

“Would that bring me closer to number one?”

He gave a bitter smile.

Of course, he didn’t know how much impact it would have.

And it was a story for when he completed it.

Hyun-soo put the Snowflake Stone back in his pocket.

He hadn’t decided what to make yet.

The reason he came here this time was to become stronger.

He took out another mineral.

This mineral was the one dropped by the demon Grout.

However, it wasn’t used for artifact creation.

This was because it was a reinforcement stone.

Artifact reinforcement.

Decades ago, many popular RPG games featured a reinforcement system.

It meant enhancing artifacts using reinforcement stones or reinforcement scrolls.

The reinforcement stone Hyun-soo obtained this time was called the Blackstone.

(Blackstone)

Grade: Legendary

Restriction: Level 300+ Blacksmith

Difficulty: None

Special Abilities:

· It has over 200% higher success rate compared to regular reinforcement stones.

· No artifact will vanish, regardless of the reinforcement attempt.

· Can reinforce up to +3.

· Can reinforce artifacts of any grade.

· Reinforced artifacts will perform significantly better than usual.

Description: The Blackstone is a reinforcement stone from the demon realm, held by the demon Grout. It is a special reinforcement stone that cannot be found in the earthly realm.

Hyun-soo obtained eight Blackstones.

‘This is an incredible reinforcement stone.’

First, 99% of the reinforcement stones in Ares will destroy the artifact upon failure.

Secondly, most reinforcement stones can only achieve +1 reinforcement per stone.

Even the blessed reinforcement stone, sold for 2 million won, can only reach +2 with one stone.

But Blackstone can achieve up to +3 with a single stone.

Moreover, the higher the grade of the artifact, the higher the failure rate for reinforcement.

According to the official Ares website, while a regular grade artifact has a 50% success rate without reinforcement, a unique grade only has a 2% success rate.

‘Not to mention that users’ greatest fear of losing their artifact is eliminated.’

Reinforcement is the easiest way to upgrade to a better artifact.

However, many users do not attempt it.

This is because there is a risk of losing their valuable artifact.

But with the Blackstone, only the materials are lost, and the artifact does not disappear.

It also has a 200% higher success rate compared to regular reinforcement stones.

One downside is this:

‘Reinforcement is not determined by skill.’

It is purely based on luck.

Reinforcement is attempted by placing the reinforcement stone on the artifact and striking it with a hammer.

However, Hyun-soo had a new idea.

‘It is, after all, a mineral.’

The Blackstone Hyun-soo examined was a mineral with a lot of impurities.

He tried placing one Blackstone in the furnace.

He collected the molten material and refined the impurities from the solidified substance.

Then,

[You have removed the impurities from the Blackstone.]

[The effects of the Blackstone are significantly enhanced.]

Eureka!

Hyun-soo was amazed.

(Blackstone)

Grade: Legendary

Restriction: Level 300+ Blacksmith

Difficulty: None

Special Abilities:

· It has over 250% higher success rate compared to regular reinforcement stones.

· No artifact will vanish, regardless of the reinforcement attempt.

· Can reinforce up to +4.

· Can reinforce artifacts of any grade.

· Reinforced artifacts will perform significantly better than usual.

Description: The Blackstone is a reinforcement stone from the demon realm, held by the demon Grout. It is a special reinforcement stone that cannot be found in the earthly realm, refined and purified by a blacksmith to remove impurities.

This is something ordinary users cannot achieve.

Their skills do not include the power to refine or purify reinforcement stones.

‘The success rate increased by 50%, and it can reach up to +4 in one reinforcement.’

Hyun-soo refined and purified the remaining Blackstones.

Next, he placed the Supreme Sword on the anvil.

Hyun-soo was nervous.

‘How much can I reinforce it? +2? No, even +1 would be satisfying.’

Reinforcing the Supreme Sword was a big deal.

The value of reinforcing an exceptional and rare artifact is immense.

For example, in an old game called Lineage, reinforcing a supreme-grade artifact once resulted in astronomical value.

“Phew, let’s do this.”

He put his skills to the test and made it the best he could.

Now, all that remained was luck.

Reinforcement, from the beginning, depended entirely on the user’s luck.

However, there was one power supporting him.

[You possess the title of God Blacksmith.]

[Reinforcement success rate increases by 50%.]

With anticipation, Hyun-soo struck the reinforcement stone.

[Reinforcement failed.]

“Just once is okay.”

There were still seven left.

He immediately attempted the second reinforcement.

Clang-!

[Reinforcement failed.]

“…?”

The third attempt.

Clang-!

[Reinforcement failed.]

The fourth attempt.

[Reinforcement failed.]

[Reinforcement failed.]

[Reinforcement failed.]

“Ugh…”

Hyun-soo staggered. Seven out of the precious eight Blackstones were gone in an instant.

Reinforcement stones that cost at least 10 million won each!

But there was a slight consolation.

‘It’s not because of my skills.’

Wasn’t there a saying, “Luck is everything in a game”?

Hyun-soo was just unlucky.

When you think about it, a regular grade artifact has a 50% success rate, and a unique grade has only 2%.

Legendary grades have a 1% chance, and the success rate for “Legend Above Legend” could be in the decimal points.

He dreamed of a reinforced Supreme Sword, but it couldn’t be helped if it didn’t happen.

He knew that there had never been a successfully reinforced legendary grade artifact.

Hyun-soo calmed his mind and struck the Blackstone.

‘…Someday I’ll get something similar again. I’ll keep trying, over and over.’

He let go of a bit of his expectations and relaxed.

Then.

Clang-!

A bright light burst forth from the Supreme Sword, enough to fill the entire blacksmith shop.

‘I’ve never seen such a light burst forth…?’

Hyun-soo had watched several reinforcement videos.

Usually, only a bit of light would seep out from the artifact, but it never filled the entire blacksmith shop like this.

Moreover, there are several types of notifications when reinforcement succeeds.

Ordinary reinforcement.

‘It shines.’

Decent reinforcement.

‘It shines brightly.’

Outstanding reinforcement.

‘It shines brilliantly.’

But this time was different.

[The Supreme Sword shines the brightest.]

Hyun-soo swallowed dryly and checked the Supreme Sword.

Palace 16

Guided by Tom, Ian safely left the inner palace and made his way to the Katarina faction’s headquarters. Even before he knocked on the door, a man appeared and greeted him with respect.

“Greetings, Your Highness, the Third Prince.”

“You were expecting me?”

“Yes, we’ve been waiting for you.”

Ian was impressed by their keen perception; they recognized him immediately despite his hood and cloak. It truly was an organization that handled information the best in the capital.

“Please follow me.”

As the man opened the door to the innermost part of the building, a red-haired woman and a dwarf man stood to greet Ian.

“Welcome, Your Highness, the Third Prince.”

Ian spoke as he observed the courteous Katarina and the man.

“I expected a rougher welcome, but this is a surprise.”

“You’ve come as a guest for now, so we’re showing the proper etiquette. Are you here as an enemy instead?”

As soon as Ian finished speaking, Katarina unleashed a fierce aura, staring him down.

“An enemy…”

Having already faced the Emperor’s harsh presence, Ian brushed off Katarina’s aura and spoke calmly.

“For now, I’ve come as a guest with good intentions, so how about serving some refreshments?”

“Oh my, we don’t usually prepare refreshments for guests in the backstreets. But if Your Highness insists, we can arrange it.”

“Discussions always go better with some sweets. And coming here at night has made me a bit hungry.”

At Ian’s casual remark, Katarina smiled and glanced at Wiz, signaling a subordinate outside to bring in refreshments and tea.

Katarina wasted no time getting to the point as soon as Ian took a sip of tea.

“Now that you’ve had a chance to enjoy your tea, would you mind telling us why you’re here?”

“Didn’t Alex already tell you?”

Seeing Katarina and Wiz exchange puzzled looks, Ian realized he needed to discipline Alex later to prevent future mistakes. It’s a leader’s role to ensure their subordinates learn from their errors.

“Before I explain my purpose, I have a question. Is the man next to you qualified to hear our conversation?”

Without hesitation, Katarina answered.

“Wiz is like family to me and lends me his wisdom. He is fully qualified, so you don’t need to worry.”

Hearing the name ‘Wiz,’ Ian recalled the character from the original story. Wiz was the one who tormented Duke Blake alongside Katarina for years. Without a description of his appearance in the story, Ian hadn’t recognized him immediately. Confirming the presence of two key figures, Ian proceeded with his purpose.

“The reason I’m here is to recruit you to my side.”

Even though the Third Prince expressed his intent to recruit them directly, Wiz remained calm, as if he had already anticipated it.

“We are a group that deals in information. The moment it’s rumored we’ve taken a side, we lose clients from the other side.”

“What if the reward is so great that it outweighs the loss of other clients?”

“What kind of reward are you so confident about, Your Highness?”

“I’ll help you eliminate the entities that trouble your sight in the capital.”

Hearing something unexpected from Ian, Katarina and Wiz exchanged a silent glance. After taking a moment to gather his thoughts, Wiz spoke.

“I’m surprised to hear such a proposal from Your Highness, but supporting you just to handle something we can manage ourselves doesn’t seem worth it.”

Seeing them play hard to get, Ian smiled.

“There’s a difference between being able to do something and being able to do it easily. Taking down the Frank faction, supported by the nobles, would require significant sacrifices. But if I provide the justification to sever their connections, wouldn’t it be much easier?”

“Wouldn’t it also be an option for us to ally with the noble faction instead of replacing the Frank faction?”

“You don’t get along with the head of the noble faction, Duke Blake. He doesn’t know boundaries, and you do. That’s why you control the backstreets as an information guild rather than dealing in incense or assassination.”

Ian’s words left Katarina and Wiz speechless. They felt that Ian had thoroughly researched them.

“Who told you that?”

In a suspicious tone, Katarina questioned Ian, who responded with a sly smile.

“If you were planning to cooperate with the noble faction, the Frank faction wouldn’t have grown. It’s logical to assume they emerged because you refused to cooperate.”

Katarina nodded at Ian’s logical response. She began to wonder about the rumors of Ian being a rogue—maybe he had been pretending all along.

“On what basis can we trust that you can create such justification?”

“Do you find me that untrustworthy?”

Wiz unfolded a piece of paper with information about the Third Prince and began reading.

“No talent in swordsmanship, no talent in magic, little influence among the nobles as a rogue prince. How can we trust Your Highness’ capabilities?”

Despite Wiz’s blatant attack on his lack of abilities, Ian laughed and spoke.

“Indeed, you base your judgments on ‘information.’ It’s a good decision-making method. Let me provide you with new information about myself.”

Making decisions based on data is an advanced decision-making method even in modern society. However, it has a weakness: when a new trend emerges, the decision-making outcome can be completely reversed.

“If you have new information that can change our judgment, we’d welcome it.”

Ian slyly pulled out the ‘Detector’ from his pocket.

“It’s true I lack talent in magic and swordsmanship. I enjoy the rumors of being a rogue because it makes my enemies underestimate me.”

“Enjoying the reputation of being a rogue is new information to us.”

“Keeping others from knowing your true self is the easiest way to deceive them.”

“Then why don’t you show us the real you now, so we don’t misunderstand?”

Ian responded to Katarina’s somewhat provocative tone.

“Excuse me for a moment.”

Ian then held the palm-sized Detector and began to examine Katarina, Wiz, and the room. The Detector revealed hidden items or devices around the people. Behind Katarina and Wiz, he saw a suspicious device, likely a mechanism to open a secret passage.

“Is there a secret passage leading outside? Is it for unexpected intrusions?”

Katarina was shocked by Ian’s soft-spoken words. It seemed he knew about the ‘secret passage’ that only Wiz was aware of.

“What are you talking about? Is there a secret passage here?”

“I can see an empty space beyond one of the walls behind you. It seems like pressing the brick with the dagger pattern will open the secret passage.”

“How do you know that?”

Katarina asked, surprised. Ian pointed to the Detector.

“It’s the power of the Detector I created. I think it’s a useful enough tool to identify the secrets of an organization that has dominated the backstreets for years. Don’t you think this is a useful ability?”

Seeing Katarina and Wiz nod slowly, Ian continued.

“This machine is special. It might also create the ‘justification’ to eliminate the bothersome entities, as I mentioned. Rumors about it have recently started spreading in the palace.”

Wiz, recognizing the value of the Detector, asked.

“Do you have extras?”

“What would you do if I did?”

“As Your Highness knows, this machine would be incredibly useful in the backstreets. Many people try to bring in strange items hidden in boxes. We’d like to secure as many as possible.”

Katarina nodded in agreement. Incidents often occurred when verifying the items brought by guests. Explosions or strange objects popping out of boxes were not uncommon.

“Based on what you’ve shown us, we need to revise our information about you. And don’t worry, this information won’t spread. The fewer people who know about this device and your ability to produce it, the more valuable the information will be.”

“That’s why I like working with smart people. Isn’t it worth considering drawing the empire’s future with me?”

Katarina smiled at Ian’s proposal.

“The thought of Your Highness creating more devices like this is thrilling. But I’m not entirely convinced. We prefer to remain neutral.”

“Even in neutrality, we can have a cooperative and friendly relationship, can’t we?”

“We don’t know enough about Your Highness, and you don’t know enough about us.”

“Picky, aren’t you?”

“We prefer to be careful. I’m sure the intelligent Third Prince understands that committing to one side as an information organization means staking our future.”

“Then it’s best to build trust as a customer first.”

“We will treat you as a special S-rank client. If Your Highness continues to impress us, we might end up holding onto your coattails.”

Laughing, Ian pulled out the Detector he had pocketed earlier.

“Consider this an advance payment. I have a small request to earn your favor.”

Gaining the trust of talented individuals is simpler than expected. Recognize their talents early, exceed their expectations with gifts, and reward their performance.

Katarina and Wiz were taken aback, not expecting Ian to offer the Detector as an advance payment.

“Are you really giving this to us?”

Despite Wiz’s astonished words, Ian nodded. They would soon realize its usefulness and keep coming back for more. Besides, it wasn’t a permanently functioning device.

“Think of it as a token of trust.”

Perhaps because they received the Detector as a gift, Wiz spoke to Ian in a more friendly tone.

“What would you like us to do?”

Confirming the hint of obsession in Wiz’s eyes, Katarina shook her head.

“Considering your capabilities, it should be as easy as turning a hand over.”
