Act 128

“Hoo.”

Looking at Colparan’s battered face, I exhaled lightly. Though he showed no signs of resistance and had fallen, he wasn’t dead as his chest was still moving with each breath. He had grown old and acted obsequiously, but it seemed he had trained somewhat. So, I gave him a bit of a rougher ‘education.’

“Sir Al Hazar.”

When I called his name cautiously, he flinched and glanced at me nervously while watching over Colparan. Well, my appearance was quite fiery. The flickering purple aura above his head seemed to reflect his anxious state of mind.

Seeing that he wasn’t approaching quickly, I frowned slightly and pointed at Colparan with my finger.

“Take him away.”

“Yes, understood.”

With a respectful bow, Al Hazar supported the fallen Colparan. Normally, Colparan would have refused Al Hazar’s help, but now he seemed to have discarded all noble pride and dignity.

After being beaten like that, it’s only natural, I suppose. Looking around, everyone had lost their will to fight. The battle was over.

With Colparan’s ‘acknowledgment,’ no one gathered here could lay a finger on me. They had no choice but to watch me beat Colparan into a pulp.

“When Sir Colparan wakes up, tell him this.”

“Yes, what should I…”

“Next time we meet, it should be in the capital, not in these mountains.”

“Understood.”

Nodding, Al Hazar began to gather the soldiers and support Colparan. Even as they walked away, everyone’s gaze on me was filled with fear.

And awe.

Facing such a large force, yet remaining unscathed and calm.

“Ugh…”

Once everyone disappeared, the noble demeanor of ‘Julian’ started to wane.

“It seems I’m not perfect yet.”

Somehow… the result wasn’t satisfying.

The wounds burned by magic no longer hurt, but that was because the mage’s skills were lacking.

‘If there were a few mages of Valgo’s rank, it wouldn’t have ended with just burns.’

The original ‘Julian’ wouldn’t have allowed even a scratch.

“It’s ridiculous.”

I reject Julian’s nature but desire his skill.

Just then, a shadow wriggled inside my body, and an eyeball popped out.

“Sombra.”

I called its name, but it showed no reaction.

What’s wrong with this thing?

Ah, I gave it a new name, didn’t I?

“An… gelica?”

When I called it by the correct name, it responded. Wriggling, it revealed its eyes and began to caress the burned areas.

“The wounds are fine.”

Only after hearing those words did it seem reassured and moved away from the wounds.

“By the way, how did you do it?”

During the battle, I saw it clearly. Colparan’s arrow flying towards me.

There was no place to dodge, and I couldn’t block it, so I had given up.

I had concentrated mana in the area to prevent a fatal injury, but…

‘In my haste, I forgot to harden the shadows.’

But then, how did it block the arrow?

Clink.

As if reading my thoughts, ‘Angelica’ spat out something from its body.

An arrow?

……So it didn’t block it, it ate it?

I stared at ‘Angelica’ in disbelief, and it blinked its eyes slowly, as if taking it as a compliment, and then smiled serenely, mimicking Julian’s half-closed eyes.

***

“I didn’t expect you to come so soon.”

A few days after the incident with Colparan, he visited my mansion. Naturally, the marks of the ‘education’ I gave him hadn’t disappeared yet.

I felt a bit smug, but Colparan looked at me with a sullen expression.

“Julian, my boy, you need to learn to respect your elders.”

Grumbling, he was a sight from head to toe, with no part unscathed, even needing a cane to walk.

“Do you need more ‘education’? From the way you’re talking, it seems you’re still quite lively.”

“Cough.”

Colparan Demias, a noble who gave off a rather lightweight vibe, cleared his throat.

I remembered that he didn’t have many dialogue logs in the work, making me wonder, ‘Was this really his personality?’

“The incident the other day… was a grave mistake on your part, Sir Colparan.”

Pintel, who was by my side, reprimanded him. I hadn’t planned to involve Pintel, but he insisted on joining the conversation once he heard about the incident with Colparan.

‘Tsk. It couldn’t be helped.’

Because of this, my plan to pin the treason’s center on Colparan became harder to execute, but I thought it could also be an opportunity.

‘This is a chance to show strong resolve.’

Never!! Never put me at the center of the treason.

“Ha ha, it’s true that it didn’t seem you had much justification at the time. Except for the fact that I stayed quiet while being beaten, I have no regrets about my actions.”

“Click.”

Pintel clicked his tongue at Colparan’s attitude.

“Even though I stayed quiet, I thought of it as my way of acknowledging you. After all, it’s you who needs my power to bring down Tenellon, isn’t it?”

Although it wasn’t my intention, Colparan, knowing how Pintel behaved in the Dawn Society, began to act brazenly.

However, even with his triumphant smile, he couldn’t hide the fact that his legs were trembling from the beating he took, making him look somewhat pitiable.

“So!”

Thump.

After striking the cane down and placing both hands on it, Colparan wore a serious expression.

An old man who had lived long enough, his face wrinkled, but the shadows cast by them gave him a severe aura.

“When would be a good time?”

None of the three bishops gathered here misunderstood what Colparan meant by ‘when.’

The usurpation of the Grand Archbishop’s seat. Further, the death of Tenellon.

He was asking when would be a good time for the rebellion.

“Do not act rashly. It is up to Sir Julian to decide that.”

“Oh ho……?” Colparan sneered at Pintel’s words, giving him a sideways glance.

“It sounds like you’re willing to proceed with the plan as long as Julian permits it, regardless of whether we’re ready or not.”

“If Sir Julian desires it…………, we could do it right now………”

“Tsk.”

Are you out of your mind? What are you talking about?

Although I know that Pintel has been showing immense trust in me lately, it feels like this has blinded him.

Hey, you idiot! Get a grip! This isn’t right!

“Sir Pintel. Please, calm down. What we want is success, not a meaningless death.”

“I apologize.”

Still, he listens well.

Colparan gave Pintel a once-over and then spoke again.

“It seems nothing has been properly decided yet.”

Colparan chuckled, and although Pintel looked slightly displeased, he remained silent at my look urging him to stay calm.

“In that case, let me arrange the schedule from now on. How about it?”

Colparan began to reveal his true colors.

No matter how much he acknowledges me and participates in the rebellion, he can’t abandon his primal desires.

‘Yes, that’s exactly it!’

The reason I accepted Colparan was to hand over all the authority to him and step back from the danger.

Although Colparan might not have noticed my intention, I supported his actions.

Bang!

“What are you talking about, Sir Colparan!”

Pintel’s face turned fierce as he slammed the table with his fist.

“Haha, why are you so angry?”

“How could I not be angry!?”

He must be furious at the thought that all his efforts would be swallowed by Colparan.

“No matter how much Sir Colparan conspires with other bishops, all the authority lies with Sir Julian!”

“Ha ha ha.”

Contrary to the boiling Pintel, Colparan began to laugh leisurely.

Their emotions contrasted sharply.

However, despite the stark contrast, both fell silent, and an awkward silence thickened.

They knew there was no point in raising their voices at each other.

They must be waiting for my words.

In that case, it’s only natural to speak up.

“Let’s do as Sir Colparan suggested.”

Although my words broke the silence, the atmosphere grew even heavier.

Deeper, and deeper into the abyss.

Why? I said we should just do it that way.

Pintel’s face, flushed with anger, looked like it was about to explode.

“Wh-what do you mean by that, Sir Julian!”

Pintel’s voice, tinged with confusion and anger, lifted the flow of the conversation.

“This is a significant task that you, Sir Julian, must handle ‘personally’! Handing it over to Sir Colparan is…….”

“So what? As I said before, the important thing is to carry out the task successfully, isn’t it?”

Ignoring Pintel’s plaintive tone, I spoke firmly.

‘It doesn’t matter who succeeds.’

But stepping back is important.

What matters is my safety, my mental health.

Isn’t that an obvious truth?

Of course, I could step forward and succeed.

I could crush Tenellon and ascend to the position of the Grand Archbishop, commanding the bishops.

But if that happens, it’s only a matter of time before the imperial family reveals my identity, and I’d be abandoning the place where I can live freely and safely.

I’ve said it many times, but as long as it doesn’t harm me, I have no intention of caring about the Dawn Society or anything else.

Revival of the Demon God? Just give it to the dogs.

Of course, I have a bit of interest in the Sword Saint.

“If you seek petty personal gain and ruin something great………… hehe, there’s nothing funnier than that.”

In any case, as long as I succeed in that ‘task,’ that’s all that matters.

Adopting this stance, I observed Colparan’s reaction.

‘How do you like it? Now that I’ve said this, go ahead and devour me…………. huh?’

But Colparan’s reaction was strange.

His face, battered from being beaten, was drenched in cold sweat, and unlike before, he no longer seemed at ease.

Why…………… does it still hurt?

***

It is only natural for people to covet power; one could even say it’s a principle of nature.

‘From his actions, it’s clear he craves power…………..?’

Colparan lifted his head to study Julian’s face.

Eyes that couldn’t be seen and an expression that couldn’t be read.

Colparan thought that penetrating his ‘poker face’ was an impossible task.

‘Heh, it’s clear he has another agenda.’

Though he didn’t yet understand the true intent behind Julian’s words, Colparan inwardly chuckled, thinking it didn’t matter.

‘The guy’s done some scheming.’

Where did that idiot who used to play the imperial dog go, and since when did he start pulling these tricks?

‘Don’t let personal greed blind you to the bigger picture? Hahaha.’

Either way, it was a topic that could only benefit Julian.

If Colparan accepted his proposal here, as Julian said, he would be seen as someone acting not for ‘the greater good’ but for ‘personal greed.’

If he refused, he would be seen as a small-minded coward.

“What will you do, Sir Colparan?”

“Hmm…………. fine, then I’ll do my best as you suggested, Julian.”

How about approaching it this way?

‘The young fool doesn’t even realize he’s falling into his own trap.’

Even if he was to be seen as blinded by greed, Colparan had no intention of stopping.

While he could acknowledge that Julian was a suitable ‘talent’ to lead the Dawn Society, he did not recognize him as the ‘leader.’

“I’ll inform the bishops I’m acquainted with. First, it’s best to tell Gennin. He’s in charge of the monastery’s ‘management.'”

Clearly presenting the future plan.

By planting these seeds, Julian would be unable to pull out.

‘Well, what will you do?’

Why don’t you just curl up and say it was all a joke?

“Good, you’re indeed outstanding, Sir Colparan.”

Contrary to Colparan’s expectations, Julian smiled with satisfaction.

“If Sir Colparan takes charge, the chances of failure will decrease.”

Unlike what he expected, Julian was shifting the entire responsibility for the task onto him.

Is that why?

A storm of thoughts began to swirl in Colparan’s mind.

…What on earth is this guy planning?

Up until now, as a noble, as a bishop of the Dawn Society, he had survived many years by mastering the art of balance.

If he hadn’t, he would have been ‘eliminated’ while defying Tenellon.

Recognizing what’s on the negotiating table and discerning the opponent’s thoughts is fundamental in ‘transactions.’

‘Julian…….’

He couldn’t read Julian’s thoughts at all.

Are you really entrusting me with full responsibility?

‘Are you trying to say you have no desire for power?’

The person who wields significant influence in this situation is sure to rise to the position of the Grand Archbishop later.

There’s no way Julian, who initiated this, would abandon that.

“Heh, heh. Just kidding. If I really intended to take your position, I wouldn’t have shown up here at all.”

In the end, negotiations favor those who reveal their cards.

Looking at the man who seemed almost noble beyond the realm of possible understanding, Colparan decided to let this matter slide.

“No, you don’t need to dismiss it as a joke. I’m serious, Sir Colparan.”

Even after revealing his hand, Julian continued to pursue relentlessly.

‘This crazy hunting dog of the royal family… what is he thinking!?’

A raccoon skilled at walking the tightrope, was bewildered by the ‘hunting dog of the royal family,’ who thought this:

‘Hey, you need to do it! I’m giving it all to you!!’

Ignoring the chilling air for a moment, Director Choi slyly licked the liquid from the potion bottle.

‘Hmm.’

It tasted strongly of strawberries. However, it was a bit ambiguous to call it just a strawberry. It was like another fruit named strawberry. The overwhelming aroma and flavor were heavenly. A fruit of the heavens? To think a potion would taste like this. But what surprised Director Choi even more was how quickly Kim Dong-gil’s condition started to improve after applying and consuming the potion.

‘The description definitely said it had a weak healing effect….’

Could the phrase ‘depending on the amount of mana possessed’ attached to it create such an effect? Kim Dong-gil was a Level 6 awakener. Normally, he wouldn’t be able to challenge a Level 7 dungeon, but he participated as a support personnel. In any case, it was impossible to challenge a Level 7 dungeon with only Level 7 awakened ones. There weren’t that many Level 7 awakened ones to begin with.

‘Even so, such efficacy?’

How much stronger would the effect be if he, a Level 7 awakened one, consumed it?

“How are you feeling, Guild Leader?”

“Ugh. I feel like I’m going to live. No, I’m definitely alive now. Haha!”

His complexion was still pale, but it was clear he had revived. Just in case, a support awakened one with medical knowledge examined him and reported that apart from a hint of anemia, he was perfectly fine.

‘Amazing!’

This admiration wasn’t for Kim Dong-gil but for the potion. Where on earth did he get such a potion? Was it found in a dungeon? But right now, there were more urgent matters at hand.

“Please take good care of Guild Leader Kim Dong-gil. Let’s start by collecting the byproducts.”

A Level 7 dungeon. In South Korea, it was a rare dungeon, having been cleared only about 30 times. People started moving busily.

* * *

“Are they doing well?”

It had been over a month since the Bare Fist Guild and the Terror Guild set out to attack the Level 7 dungeon. The size of each dungeon varied, so the time to conquer them differed, but it was known that the Level 7 dungeons took quite a long time.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong ! Look at this!”

“Hmm? What is it?”

Some time had passed. In the meantime, there had been one more delivery, and the Ara Hongryeon Guild showed an enthusiastic response, saying they would purchase all the potions I made. And the time to harvest the new crops growing in the Dungeon of Gluttony was approaching. No, it was already time to harvest.

As I headed towards Ara, who was waving from the distant Goso Goso field, a savory aroma wafted through the air.

“Hmm~! What a nice smell.”

When I arrived at the center of the field where Ara was, she pointed to something.

“Look at this!”

“Oh?”

The fruits had ripened. They hadn’t just formed; they were ready to be harvested.

“Can we harvest them?”

“Yes!”

Ara nodded confidently.

Since Ara is also a slime, she had the ability to know the growth or harvest time of crops, making her reliable.

“We can harvest everything by tomorrow!”

“Wow. Then, shall we taste the first harvest?”

“Good idea!”

There were quite a few ripe fruits.

As we harvested and brought the fragrant crops, the working slimes showed interest and approached.

‘This is the Goso Goso I grew.’

Technically, the slimes grew it, but I won’t correct myself.

[Goso Goso Infused with Mana LV.1]

[It contains faint mana.]

[When consumed, it is savory.]

“??”

Is this a joke?

For a moment, I thought the description was a joke, but knowing that sometimes there are items with such meaningless descriptions, I felt a bit disappointed.

“It’s a crop with no special effects.”

But it was quite peculiar.

When consumed, it is savory? The ambiguous description was amusing.

Disappointment aside, I distributed the fruits, each no bigger than a thumb nail, for a taste.

At that moment,

[Quest: Harvest a New Crop from the Unknown Land]

[Grow a new crop in the Dungeon of Gluttony]

[New crop cultivation: 1/1]

The quest was completed, and the notification flickered before my eyes.

I wasn’t even paying attention to it, but it felt like receiving an unexpected gift.

“When I harvested garlic, onions, and lettuce, there was no quest. I guess Goso Goso is classified as a new crop.”

Aside from the peppers and soybeans for making paste, other crops had already been harvested, and new seeds were planted.

While wondering what the reward would be,

[A new resident is coming to the Dungeon of Gluttony.]

“What?”

An unexpected message appeared.

I expected a material reward, but what was this?

[Quest: Welcome the New Resident]

Please welcome those who will soon migrate to the Dungeon of Gluttony.

Residents’ Happiness: 0/100

Another quest was created as if it was connected.

But who could the new residents be?

‘It better not be monsters?’

If I had to increase the happiness of monsters, it would be a troublesome quest.

In such a case, I’d pretend the quest didn’t exist.

After waiting for a while, not knowing when the new residents would arrive, I checked the harvested Goso Goso.

“Even the regular Goso Goso was savory, let’s see how the ones we grew taste.”

I peeled off the layers of husk like barley or rice.

Then, the brown flesh was revealed.

A subtle grain aroma wafted, reminiscent of freshly baked bread.

Crunch!

Eating it raw made it a bit firm.

However, as soon as I chewed, I couldn’t help but smile at the warm aroma.

‘A cozy feeling.’

The more I chewed, the more the savory flavor came out.

At the same time, the grain’s unique sweetness gradually appeared, making me smile even more.

“It’s delicious.”

It wasn’t as stimulating or astonishing as the crops before, but it provided much more satisfaction.

It felt like eating a hearty bowl of rice.

“Hmm, it passes.”

Ara, who had been chewing diligently, nodded seriously like a judge.

Gomgom, who had come over for the Goso Goso, didn’t seem to like the taste and went to the honey spring to drink.

The slimes, on the other hand, expressed their satisfaction by wiggling their bodies rhythmically.

“It’s better than regular Goso Goso, right?”

“Of course!”

It had grown a bit larger.

Though it was a small difference, this slight increase greatly enhanced satisfaction.

Now, the important thing was to cook with this improved Goso Goso.

“I’ll try making it into rice and also grinding it into flour for dough….”

The first goal was to grind it into flour to make dough.

I had promised Baek Tae-seop, the leader of the Iron-Blood Guild, that I would make him a pizza.

‘Come to think of it, I heard that his son’s poison was almost cured.’

He had asked me to contact him when I had time, wanting to express his gratitude, but I had postponed our meeting until after the cure.

I wasn’t ready to make the pizza yet, and almost cured was different from completely cured.

Unlike Young-seong’s wife, who was a high-level awakened, it seemed to take longer for the treatment.

It was a bit early to celebrate just yet.

I gathered the remaining Goso Goso.

I also prepared my cooking tools, which I always carried along with my camping gear.

“Let’s grind it!”

“Let’s grind it!”

First, I peeled all the collected Goso Goso.

Then, I gathered the peeled Goso Goso and started grinding it earnestly.

Since I didn’t have a mortar, I laid a cloth on the ground and used a metal spatula-like tool to crush the Goso Goso.

Seeing Ara doing it, I gaped in awe.

Crunch!

Swish swish-

Holding it in one hand and applying pure grip strength, she effortlessly crushed it into powder.

Witnessing Ara’s display of strength, I was utterly stunned.

‘Can I do that too?’

Just in case, I grasped the Goso Goso and applied force, feeling something breaking.

But it only cracked slightly and didn’t crumble into powder like Ara’s did.

“Hehe.”

“Hmm?”

Seeing me laughing helplessly and just watching, Ara tilted her head.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, aren’t you doing it?”

“I was just watching because you’re so good at it, Ara.”

“Hehe! I’m strong!”

Watching Ara crush Goso Goso into powder with each hand, I decided to start preparing the dough.

First, I sifted the powder Ara had made.

I added a bit of salt to the sifted powder and a little water.

“Spatula, it seems this is your role.”

Using the spatula I had used to crush the Goso Goso, I started the initial mixing.

As I stirred diligently, it gradually developed some stickiness.

“Oh wow.”

The gluten content varies depending on the type of flour, so the quality of the dough can differ, but luckily, it held together well.

I had actually prepared some extra gluten to mix in case it didn’t turn out well.

‘My goal is to make pizza dough.’

I added water once more and kneaded it a second time.

Although I considered using the honey-flavored hot spring water, I decided to first attempt success with ordinary water.

“Oh wow! This is amazing!”

Ara clapped her hands at the completely transformed appearance of the Goso Goso.

The powder on her hands flew into the air, releasing a savory aroma.

When it was ready, I added yeast.

Then, I handed the spatula to Ara.

“Want to mix it?”

“Oh wow!”

Ara stirred with the spatula.

Seeing her slightly awkward movements, I smiled and said,

“You can use your hands.”

“Using hands it is!”

She placed the dough from the bowl onto the cloth-covered cutting board and kneaded it with her hands.

It looked like a child’s play, but having witnessed her grip strength, I trusted and waited.

-Growl.

“Gomgom, do you want to try too?”

Ara handed the task to Gomgom, who approached with curious movements.

Gomgom clumsily tried to mimic Ara.

“This is how you do it!”

-Growl?

“Yes! Like this, but more like this!”

They communicated with gestures and sounds, and soon, Gomgom seemed tired and slumped down. It all happened in less than five minutes.

I laughed at the cute sight and patted Gomgom.

-Groan.

“It seems about ready, let’s check.”

When I touched the dough, it had become suitably elastic.

It stretched without breaking and had good elasticity.

“Oh wow.”

“Now we’ll put this here and wait.”

I covered the round dough in the bowl with plastic wrap.

I placed the bowl in a warm tent, particularly near the humidifier, wrapped in clothes.

Having finished the first stage of pizza preparation, we enjoyed a light snack.

“Snack time! Snack time! candies! candies!”

Gomgom ate strawberries coated in honey from the Alfheims.

Ara enjoyed her favorite food, candies, along with various other dishes.

We also called all the slimes to join us.

In the meantime, I moved quietly.

‘I need to make a mini oven.’

These days, it’s convenient to learn a lot from the internet.

Of course, there’s a lot of incorrect information to sift through.

I had collected stones while clearing the field, thinking they might come in handy.

I began to build the oven as I had learned.

It wasn’t grand, just big enough to make one pizza.

The main challenge was maintaining the firepower.

“I want to help too!”

Seeing me build the oven, Ara stuffed her mouth with food and ran over.

“Ara, can you bring some wet soil from the honey-flavored hot spring?”

“Sure!”

Mud would have been ideal, but we used wet soil for now.

The soil under the hot spring had become somewhat muddy over time, so it wasn’t too bad.

I roughly shaped the mini oven and plastered it with wet soil to prevent air from leaking out. I made a separate vent.

“Oh wow!”

Ara exclaimed as the roughly completed mini oven took shape. I immediately used the camping supplies to start a fire.

“Let’s gather some firewood.”

“Firewood!”

We searched the area with the slimes and Gomgom for trees. Although I started the fire with camping tools, we needed firewood.

“How did you find so much?”

As I gathered small twigs, Ara, Gomgom, and the slimes brought back piles of firewood.

“Gomgom showed us!”

“Oh wow, well done, Gomgom.”

As expected, the natives knew best.

Thanks to Gomgom, I had enough firewood and started the fire in earnest.

Being my first attempt, there was a high chance of failure, but I considered it a learning experience.

If things didn’t work out, I could always hand the ingredients to the Iron-Blood Guild and let them handle the cooking.

Before I knew it, the dough fermentation time had passed.

The dough, after its first fermentation, was puffed up thanks to the yeast.

I took out the dough and rolled it to release the air.

Seeing this, Ara wanted to try, but it was already done.

“I’ll let you do it next time, Ara.”

“Okay.”

I patted Ara, who looked disappointed, and let the dough ferment for a bit longer.

Then I handed the finished dough to Ara.

“Ara, you’ve eaten pizza outside, right?”

“Yep! It’s delicious!”

“We’re making pizza now. Can you spread the dough into a pizza shape?”

“Oh wow!”

Ara’s eyes sparkled with excitement. Gomgom, who was beside her, looked puzzled.

Ara quickly rolled out the dough with a rolling pin.

The slimes watched and wiggled excitedly.

“It’s done!”

“Well done.”

She made a perfect round shape.

To prevent it from puffing up too much in the oven, I poked holes in the dough and added the toppings.

“Tomato sauce! Potatoes, sweet potatoes, Embergrill!”

Finally, I added the cheese.

The cheese was store-bought, as expected.

We placed the topped pizza dough into the freshly made oven, carefully monitoring the temperature.

About 10 to 15 minutes later, we checked the pizza as it turned golden brown.

‘Not bad for a first try.’

I was worried the oven wouldn’t work well, but it had surprisingly good heat.

The aroma of the Goso Goso and the other ingredients cooking spread through the air.

After about 15 minutes, the pizza was finally done.

“Oh!”

Ara exclaimed in delight.

She must have felt proud of her creation.

The smell was amazing.

Although the appearance was a bit rough, the aroma was unbeatable.

‘This will be a great way to celebrate Baek Tae-seop’s son’s recovery.’

But first, let’s taste it!

As Alex sighed without realizing it, his legs began to tremble at Ian’s next words.

“Do you not want to do it?”

“Y-Your Highness, haven’t I told you? My position within the Frank faction is just at the bottom. How could I possibly obtain such information?”

In response to Alex’s logical answer, Ian spoke illogically.

“Then should I, the Third Prince, charge into the Frank faction with you as my guide?”

“Oh! That seems more realistic!”

Momentarily overcome with anger, Ian nearly swung his right hand to deliver a backhanded slap, but his left hand managed to hold it back.

“Alex, think carefully. Why would I make such a request to you?”

“Uh, I’m not sure?”

“I want to give you a chance. If you can accomplish what you think is impossible, won’t the reward be sweet as well?”

Alex nodded, finding Ian’s words logical. Ian thought it wouldn’t be a bad test to turn this low-ranking member to his side.

Even if the incense was not involved, he had other ways to deal with Viscount Steel and the nobles.

Ian decided to test Alex’s capabilities by tossing him a heavy pouch from his pocket.

Thunk.

The pleasant sound made Alex’s ears perk up involuntarily. When Ian gave him a look, Alex carefully opened the pouch and swallowed at the sight of the golden glow.

“What is this?”

“Alex, you didn’t think I’d give you a job with nothing to go on, did you?”

‘Umm… that’s exactly how you used to do it.’

“Of course not. From the moment you allowed me to call you ‘Boss,’ I knew you weren’t that kind of person.”

Every time Alex looked at the gold-filled pouch in his hands, he felt a sense of peace.

“You’re not planning to run away, are you?”

“Ahem, what do you mean? I, Alex, live and die by loyalty.”

“Oh, looks like I found the right person. If you ran off with that gold, I was going to show you why they call me a rogue.”

As Ian grinned, Alex awkwardly laughed along.

“I have one more favor to ask.”

“W-What is it?”

“Tell the boss of the Katarina faction that I will be visiting.”

“Y-Your Highness? You know I’m from the Frank faction, right? The Katarina faction is a group that even knows the color of the nobles’ underwear. If I visit, I might be killed on the spot.”

“If their information is that good, they’ll know we met, won’t they? So there’s nothing to worry about, right?”

Alex couldn’t respond to Ian’s logical question.

“And if they truly have such capabilities, I’m even more eager to meet them. Your role is crucial.”

“Your Highness, you don’t want me to disappear with this gold, do you?”

Noticing the fear in Alex’s eyes, Ian spoke to ease his fear. After all, fear can be replaced by a greater fear.

“Alex, whether I put a bounty on you or you get killed by the Katarina faction, isn’t it the same?”

After pondering for a moment, Alex nodded.

“When you meet the boss of the Katarina faction, tell them this.”

Realizing that Ian’s words might be a lifeline if he visited the Katarina faction, Alex focused intently.

“Tell them that if they meet with me, I will make the annoying entities in the backstreets of the imperial capital disappear.”

“By annoying entities, do you mean the Frank faction?”

“I didn’t say the Frank faction, did I? Can you do it?”

“Y-Yes, I can.”

“Alex, I hope you value your life. I don’t want things to get complicated.”

Alex had been wary of the Third Prince’s volatile temper to avoid losing his head. His instincts told him that betraying this plan would ruin his life.

“I will remember, Your Highness.”

Ian was curious. Would this person, who had been assigned to monitor his use of incense, betray his organization? If Alex truly risked his life to meet with the Katarina faction, he would be a valuable asset.

“Did you call for me, Earl?”

Viscount Steel’s face showed a hint of annoyance as he met with Earl Liam. The Earl noticed but pretended not to and asked about the progress.

“Viscount Steel, how is the work going?”

“Earl, I think things are going easier than expected.”

Seeing Viscount Steel’s confident answer, Earl Liam frowned. The word “easy” bothered him.

“Easier than expected?”

“The Third Prince is blatantly demanding bribes from me. Even though he clearly knows he’s the ‘tax inspector.'”

“Aren’t you being too complacent?”

Earl Liam was skeptical, feeling a strange similarity to the pattern with Viscount Helington, but Viscount Steel responded confidently.

“Count, you might not know the tax office well, but I’ve been in charge for several years. Many nobles have come as inspectors, and do you know what happened? They all turned to our side after receiving substantial bribes. I’ve never seen anyone refuse money in this empire.”

“Hmm.”

Earl Liam had to nod in agreement. The amount of tax revenue coming into the empire was enormous, and even a small portion of the leftovers was a significant sum.

“And there’s more, Earl.”

Viscount Steel seemed to be enjoying the situation, drawing out his words to gauge the Earl’s reaction.

“Did you find something?”

“The Third Prince is different from previous inspectors.”

“Different how?”

“Well, even after giving him the salary of five regular tax officers, he wasn’t satisfied. He even asked me separately if there was a chance for a big score.”

Earl Liam felt both suspicion and understanding. They had reduced Ian’s budget due to his reckless behavior, so it made sense he might be seeking ways to make up for it.

The thought crossed his mind that Ian might not have forgiven Viscount Helington because he blocked an opportunity to profit through the ‘Detector.’

“The Third Prince proposed a deal: give him enough crumbs to report to the Emperor, and he would let this inspection end smoothly.”

“So, what do you plan to do?”

“Soon, goods will arrive at the ‘Rose Inn.’ If we sell those to the nobles in the inner palace, it would bring in a lot of money. We can give the prince a share and report to the Emperor after making someone a scapegoat.”

Earl Liam spoke with a surprised tone.

“Surely, you didn’t tell the Third Prince everything about the ‘Rose Inn’?”

“I didn’t say anything unnecessary, so don’t worry.”

As Viscount Steel spoke, he realized something odd. The Third Prince had claimed he had never heard of the Rose Inn, but hadn’t he often gone there to enjoy the incense?

“Now that I think about it, there was something strange. When I mentioned the Rose Inn, the Third Prince said he had never heard of it.”

Earl Liam also showed suspicion. How could someone who was practically addicted to incense not know about the Rose Inn?

“Could he be pretending not to know for a reason?”

“I don’t think so. When the prince demanded bribes, his eyes were full of greed, just like the nobles who begged for incense.”

“So he might just want to hide his incense use.”

“Considering how the prince tries to maintain his pride, that makes sense. Begging for incense would be beneath his dignity as a prince.”

With the situation more understandable, Viscount Steel spoke more confidently.

“Earl, leave this to me. I will handle it cleanly, unlike what happened with Viscount Helington.”

“Viscount, it’s better not to underestimate the Third Prince.”

Viscount Steel inwardly mocked the Earl’s caution. He thought the Earl might be worried about his own position if Viscount Steel succeeded and rose to the same rank.

Sending the Third Prince away would likely earn him a title from Duke Blake, who valued merit.

But for now, it was necessary to appease the Earl.

“Earl, if you are so concerned, what additional measures would you suggest?”

“Why not delay the delivery of goods to the Rose Inn until the inspection ends, just in case?”

Viscount Steel didn’t immediately refute the Earl’s suggestion but pretended to consider it. He didn’t want to offend the Earl by dismissing his idea outright.

“That’s a good suggestion, Earl. However, there’s one concern.”

“What is it?”

“Due to the time taken to improve the quality of the new incense, we have no stock of the existing incense. If the new incense is not supplied on time, the nobles we control with it might rebel.”

Earl Liam pondered this before making a decision.

“Viscount, it might be better to report this to Duke Blake.”

Viscount Steel decided to push a bit harder to avoid losing his credit.

“Count, how about entrusting the matter of the Third Prince entirely to me? Trust me this once.”

The Earl remembered the duke’s words to double-check the Third Prince’s intentions. Sighing inwardly, the Earl spoke with a resigned expression.

“Then it can’t be helped. Besides taking bribes, did the prince do anything else?”

“He interviewed the tax collectors and took the receipts, but it’s pointless. It would take at least a year to compile enough evidence from those documents.”

The Earl nodded in agreement. Even with four or five non-tax office personnel working, it would take at least ten years to organize the tax receipts by category.

“Impossible.”

“I gave the prince something to show the Emperor and the Chancellor, so don’t worry.”

“I’ll trust you.”

“Don’t worry. Even those who worked as tax collectors for over five years wouldn’t know. It would take the prince, who knows nothing about taxes, a whole night to read a single page.”

After the meeting with the Earl, Viscount Steel headed to his office, his shoulders unconsciously shaking with excitement.

Anyone could see he was filled with dreams.

However, unimaginable things were happening in Ian’s room.

Act 127

Prev I TOC I Next

[Trait, ‘Opened Eyes,’ has been activated.]

As the eyes opened, the broadened vision, the clearer flow of mana, and the direction of hostility became apparent. Everything began to become clearer than when the eyes were closed, but simultaneously, I could feel my head burning up. The ‘Opened Eyes’ greatly influences emotions. Although I had become more accustomed to handling it than before, it still felt foreign, as if it wasn’t a part of me.

‘That’s dangerous.’

Judging by the aura I could sense, the soldiers scattered around weren’t just Colparan’s private soldiers; there were quite a few members of the Order mixed in. For Colparan, this conflict is a battle to seize the core of the ‘Dawn Society’. Therefore, those not related to the ‘Dawn Society’ cannot be here.

“Knights, Monsignors, and even magicians.”

Comparing their individual strength to mine would be like comparing the sky to the ground, but unfortunately, they have the advantage in numbers. If that’s the case, the gap in power will significantly narrow. However, I am ‘Julian’.

“It looks like you’ve gathered a bunch of cowards here, Sir Colparan.”

Thanks to the ‘Opened Eyes’, the movements of those flinching around me were vividly clear.

“Staying here like a tailless demon will make it difficult for me to ‘educate’ you, don’t you think? Hehe.”

Anyone could see that we were at a numerical disadvantage, and there might be more tricks up the enemy’s sleeve, but ‘I can’t afford to be scared by just this.’

The soft moonlight shone brightly on the soldiers who were gradually closing in. They flinched again at the deeply carved mark.

“For those who cross that line, I will personally give ‘education’.”

A terrifying aura emanated from my entire body. My awe-inspiring presence, notorious for all sorts of infamy, began to engulf the surroundings in fear. Although I spoke of ‘education’, those gathered here know that they could die in the process. Regardless of being part of the same Dawn Society, I am the kind of ruthless man who can cut down anyone blocking my path.

The tremors of the surrounding mana grew stronger.

‘Even if we are outnumbered, the initiative is entirely mine.’

At that moment,

“Ah, ahhhh!”

Among the gathered soldiers, the most timid-looking one, now colored by ‘fear’, charged at me. He tried to close the distance and draw his sword. Without waiting, I approached and punched him in the solar plexus before he could draw his sword.

“Urgh, urgh!”

With a sharp scream, he was sent flying. That marked the beginning, and soon, others started rushing at me from all directions.

‘I can see the direction of their killing intent.’

With the ‘Opened Eyes’ manifested, my senses had become heightened to the point where I could visually track hostility. Specifically, I could more quickly catch the places where the ‘color of malice’ was heading.

‘A pincer attack from both sides.’

First, I calculated the attacks that would reach my body, then read the gaze of the closest soldier wielding a spear. A straightforward thrusting attack might be difficult to approach due to its long reach and speed, but the difference in skill rendered that advantage useless.

“Haah!”

Perhaps it was thanks to the weapon practice at the knight training ground? The trajectory of the spear was as clear as if I could see through it. The soldier thrust his spear with a shout, but a straightforward attack with a readable trajectory was not fatal at all.

“Who would get hit by such an obvious attack?”

Lightly dodging the attack and sneering at him, the enraged soldier retrieved his spear and thrust it again.

‘Alright, this is it.’

I passed by the spear from the side, grabbed the spear shaft, and deflected the attack to the opposite side.

Puuuk.

“Aaaargh!”

A soldier who had been sneaking up from behind screamed in pain as he was stabbed by the spear.

“How did you hit the one behind without even looking?!”

As the soldier holding the spear was engulfed in confusion, I drew my Moonlight Sword and aimed to slash his shoulder. However, he wore sturdy armor. My attack was absorbed, and his eyes betrayed his intent to counterattack. It was a sensible thought. A normal sword couldn’t cut through steel armor.

But he underestimated the power of aura.

Shrrk.

“K-kurk…!”

The soldier was shocked to see his armor sliced as easily as tofu. Losing his shoulder, he dropped his spear. I kicked him away, adjusted my stance, and cast my gaze around the surrounding soldiers with a commanding presence. My movements and responses were so natural that even seasoned swordsmen clicked their tongues in admiration. Their eyes were filled with awe, as if looking at a monster. I could feel all these emotions directed at me.

‘Wasn’t that kind of cool?’

Was it because of the heightened emotions from the ‘Opened Eyes’? Strange thoughts crossed my mind.

At the same time,

‘If it were the original Julian, he wouldn’t get injured in this situation, right?’

Of course, I didn’t want to completely emulate his nasty personality. While many users were curious about Julian’s past, I wasn’t particularly interested. However, I did acknowledge his skills. As the apprentice of the ‘Sword Saint’ and someone who hunted high-ranking demons alone, calling him a one-man army was not an exaggeration.

‘Faster.’

I knew it too. This body is optimized for combat, and the more I push it, the more it responds with matching results.

‘Faster, faster.’

I tried to move my body even quicker, striving to get a little closer to Julian’s level as a swordsman, not as a person.

‘This feeling… it’s not bad.’

I thought it was the perfect time to test the skills I had accumulated.

A sly smile formed on my lips, fitting for a villain.

***

Colparan, watching the fierce battle unfolding below the ridge, clicked his tongue as he saw the monster cutting through the battlefield with incredible speed.

The Imperial Hound. The Body of the Closed Eyes.

He lived up to his nicknames, easily dispatching nameless knights and Monsignors.

Moreover,

“He can shoot aura like magic.”

Though not highly skilled in swordsmanship, Colparan could easily gauge his prowess from Al Hazar’s murmured comments nearby.

“Al Hazar, if you were to fight him, could you win?”

Colparan asked, half-hoping for a miracle.

“If you’re considering killing me because my usefulness has diminished, please send me back to my homeland instead.”

Al Hazar’s brutally honest words brought a dry smile to Colparan’s face.

“Magicians, prepare yourselves.”

At his command, more soldiers who had been hiding behind trees revealed themselves. Too many soldiers to be facing just one person. Colparan had decided to hunt ‘Julian’ as if he were a ‘demon’ rather than a human. Given Julian’s accomplishments as the ‘Closed Eyes’ and his feats since joining the ‘Dawn Society,’ he was more like a monster than a human.

“Fire at full power, all at once.”

Even if they hit him, that monstrous guy would only get injured. The magicians, having finished their incantations, began to display their specialties all at once. Spheres made of fire, ice, and metal exploded where Julian stood.

Kwah-kwah-kwang!

With a massive explosion, a cloud of dust rose thickly.

“Is he… is he dead?”

A voice mixed with half worry and half hope spoke out. Although they were following Bishop Colparan’s orders, they were still afraid of what might happen next since Julian was also a ‘Bishop.’

“Ugh, argh!”

There was no need for such worries. A ‘sword energy’ flew through the dust and struck the worried magician’s body.

“Did he sense the magic and hide behind a tree in that short moment? Impressive.”

Despite his man being struck down, Colparan did not blink and instead stared at the figure slowly walking out from the dust cloud. He could see slight scorch marks on Julian’s clothes and skin.

‘What a monstrous guy.’

Still, seeing the burns suggested that he wasn’t invincible.

“Is there really a need to go this far, Sir Colparan?”

“Ha ha, how can I just stand by and watch when someone who doesn’t even know the foundation of the Dawn Society is causing such trouble?”

Ignoring Al Hazar’s worried words, Colparan extended his hand to the archer beside him.

“Give me your bow.”

Even though it was uncertain whether an old man’s arrow could affect that monster, the archer handed over the bow without hesitation, knowing Colparan was serious about archery.

“That monstrous guy seems very sensitive to hostility.”

Colparan drew the bowstring tight.

“So, how will he react to an attack without killing intent?”

Speaking in a dry tone, he observed the battlefield. Julian was still fighting the soldiers, exchanging blows. As Julian dodged another soldier’s attack and leaped back,

Fweee!

Colparan released the bowstring, timing his shot perfectly. An unexpected attack in an unavoidable situation. Everything was set for a perfect hit.

“…What?!”

The arrow did not hit Julian.

“He even dodged Colparan’s arrow,” murmured Al Hazar, watching in disbelief.

Colparan wanted to scold Al Hazar for being foolish but stopped himself.

‘I definitely hit him!’

He had been using a bow for years; he knew when he had hit the target.

‘I must have hit him…’

But there were no signs of an impact on Julian’s body from the ‘arrow.’

In truth…

“Absorbed it… huh.”

As Colparan examined Julian’s body, he couldn’t help but widen his eyes in shock. There, pitch-black, shadow-like entities with multiple gleaming eyes were writhing and staring back at him.

A mythological demon, or as people commonly refer to it, a ‘demon.’

“Could it be that Julian… is nurturing a demon within himself?”

Realizing this, Colparan hastily shouted,

“Everyone, stop attacking and fall back!”

At the old man’s command, everyone took a step back. The previously chaotic forest fell silent.

“Is the education already over?”

It was Julian’s mocking voice that broke the silence.

“Though they say a rolling stone removes a settled one, it seems I was mistaken.”

The ‘foundation of the Dawn Society,’ which he had mentioned earlier, was not about worshiping demons, as the current Grand Archbishop, ‘Tenellon,’ suggested.

The Dawn Society was founded by ‘Ainon Drimisel,’ the former head of the Drimisel family, to open new horizons through the study of ‘demonic energy,’ not to worship the ‘Demon God’ that devastated the continent.

‘How could anyone expect to gain anything by worshiping the ‘Demon God’?’

“You’re someone who holds more legitimacy than an old man like me.”

Seeing the multiple ‘eyes’ protecting Julian’s body, Colparan had to acknowledge this. With such movements, that demon must already be fully integrated with Julian. It might even be a case of opening new horizons with demonic energy, as ‘Ainon Drimisel’ mentioned.

“Forgive my rudeness.”

Colparan extended his hand.

‘With him, we might be able to set the Dawn Society back on track.’

Thinking this, he offered a handshake.

“I will forgive your rudeness.”

Julian accepted.

“But! Apart from that, the ‘education’ is not yet over.”

Thud!

With a dull impact, Colparan nearly lost consciousness from the pain on the right side of his face. When his vision returned, he realized he was rolling on the leaf-covered ground.

“Did you just say I hold more legitimacy?”

“Ugh, urgh…”

“Then, from now on, you won’t have any objections if I proceed with the ‘education,’ right, Sir Colparan?”

“W-wait!”

Colparan stretched out his hands towards Julian, gesturing for calm.

“I-I’m an old man. If you keep punching me, my body won’t hold up!”

“For someone who says that, you handled a bow quite well.”

“Ugh, ahem…”

“You should know how much strength it takes to draw a bowstring.”

Colparan’s chest heaved at Julian’s scornful words. Despite his age, Colparan had not neglected his physical training; though not young, his body was not weak either.

“Anyone who still feels they have room for improvement, please step forward.”

Julian looked around, but the soldiers remained silent. His gaze fell on Al Hazar, who only lowered his head.

“Everyone seems quick to change their stance. That’s convenient. Sir Colparan.”

Colparan flinched as Julian called his name.

“Why am I…?”

“There’s no age limit to learning, is there?”

Smirk.

Today, Julian’s smile looked even more murderous to Colparan.

Thus began the one-sided ‘lecture,’ continuing until Julian was satisfied.

Round 79

Prev | TOC | Next

It was an unscheduled event, but expanding our network this way wasn’t a bad idea.

We arrived at the Fist Guild and waited in the reception room while Kim Dong-gil stepped out briefly.

“What a pretty little girl.”

A smiling guild staff member who entered the room first brought snacks for Ara, which was impressive.

“Oh! Something delicious!”

“There’s also something to drink here, so have it together.”

“Yes! Will Kyu-seong Kyu-seong not eat any?”

“Shall I try just one?”

As we spent some time, Kim Dong-gil appeared with an apologetic look.

“I’m sorry for keeping the guests waiting.”

“What happened?”

“Oh, we received a call from the potion maker who was supposed to supply our guild, so I had to take care of it urgently…”

“Potion?”

“Yes. We can meet the delivery dates for all other types of potions, but one is not available. And it happens to be the recovery potion.”

A recovery potion, huh…

It was quite a troublesome matter.

In truth, all potions were essential for dungeon raids, but none were as crucial as recovery potions.

As expected, Kim Dong-gil was distressed.

“Actually, clearing a dungeon isn’t a big issue, but as both you and Kyu-seong are aware, recovery potions are a kind of emergency medical supply. We prepare them in case of unforeseen accidents, even if we clear the dungeon as safely as possible…”

“Are there no recovery potions left?”

“We happened to use the last one on the previous expedition. So, we requested recovery potions first in this delivery, but they said they couldn’t procure the ingredients.”

Kim Dong-gil sighed in distress.

Since the issue was the supply of ingredients, Hanul scratched his head too.

“It’s a tricky problem to ask neighboring guilds for help.”

“Exactly. If we had an urgent awakened one, we would try to procure the potion somehow, but that’s not the case…”

Listening to their conversation, I suddenly thought of the strawberries I had stored with Bokkeum.

The effect of the strawberries was minor wound healing.

Although it was somewhat ambiguous, I had confirmed that if I synthesized them into a potion, it could become a pretty decent recovery potion.

Of course, it would require the concentration of 50 strawberries…

‘Hmm.’

Should I extend my generosity to the Fist Guild, even if I couldn’t provide it to our guild?

Of course, we delivered a large quantity of strawberries and a sample of the strawberry potion I made to Ara Hongryeon through this delivery.

“Uh, Hanul.”

“Hmm?”

“Is Ara Hongryeon not having any issues with potion supplies?”

“We’re fine. The title of Korea’s first guild wasn’t earned for nothing; our network is formidable.”

“Then, may I help the Fist Guild a bit?”

“Oh?”

Hanul let out an exclamation I couldn’t understand, and Kim Dong-gil stared at me with wide eyes.

“Gasp! Is, is that possible? Well, since Mr. Kyu-seong’s food had buff effects, there could be food with recovery effects too!”

“It’s nothing grandiose…”

Seeing me glance at Hanul , he realized he hadn’t answered and nodded.

“As long as the delivery is met, there’s no problem with other activities. We originally made such a unilateral contract.”

“…… You’ve given me such favorable contract conditions.”

“Of course! Kyu-seong, you’re not just a business partner; you’re family!”

No matter how I thought about it, it was a sucker’s contract.

The surprising part was that the sucker wasn’t me but the large corporation, Ara Hongryeon Guild.

“Guild Leader, as you heard, I can trade items with recovery effects.”

“Oh!”

“But!”

I decided to draw a clear line.

“As a person, even if there’s no problem contractually, it’s a bit ethically questionable. So, I can’t provide a large quantity. This time is special.”

“Oh, thank you. This urgent situation will be fine with just that. From next month, we will be able to procure them ourselves, so we just need to get through this month safely.”

“How many recovery potions were you originally supposed to receive?”

“Five.”

It seemed like a small number, but it was a testament to the caution people took during dungeon raids.

Because lives were at stake, most guilds usually sent awakened ones one grade lower to clear the dungeon.

Therefore, as a Level 1 awakened, I could barely enter a harmless-grade dungeon.

It was a structure where accidents were unlikely to happen.

However, despite this, each guild always prepared recovery potions just in case.

The situation was slightly different for high-grade dungeon raids…

‘Since recovery potions themselves are in high demand but short supply.’

And the efficacy of manufactured potions was almost negligible.

The really effective ones were potions dropped as items in dungeons.

I took out the strawberries from Bokkeum.

Kim Dong-gil was amazed at the sight.

“That’s an unusual artifact. It looks like a slime.”

“It is a slime.”

“What?”

Everyone in the guild, including Hanul, already knew about it. Since things had come to this, I decided not to hide it anymore, and no one seemed particularly surprised.

‘Isn’t dual awakening more common than I thought?’

Even I had only learned then that Jeong So-yeon, the emblematic awakener of Ara Hongryeon, was also a dual awakener. This fact was not known to the public. It also explained why Jeong So-yeon could become the leader of Ara Hongryeon’s first team at such a young age. Guild Leader Han Seok-jun must have seen great potential in her growth.

“Our Kyu-seong here is a dual awakener.”

“What?!”

Hanul said it outright. But now it didn’t matter much because my ability didn’t seem particularly impressive. Even with dual awakening, my mana level was still that of a Level 1 awakener. Furthermore, my abilities were just liquid synthesis and slime lord, which were quite odd. In other words, I was a harmless awakener with no reason to be restrained.

‘…Is this a good or a bad thing?’

I should think positively, right?

In any case, I didn’t hide my abilities anymore, following Guild Leader Han Seok-jun’s advice. But that didn’t mean I went around announcing it first.

I asked Kim Dong-gil to prepare a basin to collect the strawberry juice.

“Ara, can I use some of the strawberries?”

“Yes!”

These strawberries were snacks meant for Ara. She had a hearty appetite, so I brought quite a lot, which was enough to make about three potions.

‘The key is whether I can make three potions in one go with liquid synthesis.’

I had two uses of liquid synthesis left for today. If needed, I could make just two.

Once the basin was ready, Ara and I started mashing the strawberries diligently. It felt like playing a sensory game with my daughter.

Lick.

Ara was cute, licking the juice off her hands while mashing the strawberries. Others found her adorable too.

“…Sss.”

Wait, was that not a look of adoration?

I heard someone swallowing their saliva.

When the scent of strawberries spread all around the Fist Guild, the mashed strawberries turned into complete juice.

I used my liquid synthesis ability on the completed strawberry juice.

Would it work…?

Thickening–!

As I used liquid synthesis, part of the juice coagulated on one side, forming something. About half of the juice. I poured the remaining juice that hadn’t become a potion back into the original container.

“Oh, amazing! Is it done?”

“There’s still one more to go.”

Leaving the completed potion in the basin, I used my ability again on the separated juice. This time, I successfully made a total of three potions.

[Strawberry Potion LV.1]

[Effective for both internal and external injuries.]

[When consumed, triggers a mild healing effect based on the user’s mana level.]

Hmm, success.

Even though it was labeled a mild healing effect, it was still quite potent. The effects were categorized as minimal, mild, normal, strong, and excellent. Even the minimal level showed noticeable effects. A mild level could heal a minor cut within 30 seconds. Additionally, the healing effect varied with the mana level, so a high-level awakener would experience a normal level of healing.

“Could you prepare potion bottles?”

“Here they are.”

Kim Dong-gil, displaying excellent foresight, had already prepared them.

I filled the completed strawberry potion into the potion bottle I received. There were exactly three servings.

“We can only make three for now.”

“…Making three recovery potions on the spot is amazing! If you go to a potion maker’s workshop, you’ll see that potions are made through a very complex process!”

However, unlike them, I couldn’t make potions endlessly even if I had enough raw materials. I had a lot of ingredients, but my abilities were limited to what I could use in a day, making it tricky.

“Hmm, so this is the potion we sent to the guild as a sample?”

“That’s right. Ara Hongryeon said they didn’t urgently need recovery potions, so we only sent the completed fruit juices and crops.”

The carrot juice that allowed one to see monster information was in steady demand. It seemed that Ara Hongryeon was aiming for high-level dungeons.

Meanwhile, Kim Dong-gil, who confirmed the effects of the strawberry potion, widened his eyes.

“Gasp!”

“Oh! This is quite surprising!”

Hanul also clapped his hands at the effects of the strawberry potion he was seeing for the first time.

“Wow, if it has this kind of effect, even Seok-jun would want it supplied immediately. High-ranking awakeners will definitely want it for its recovery effects based on the mana amount they have.”

“Haha.”

I awkwardly scratched my head at the sudden praise.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, you are amazing.”

Ara, who was licking the strawberry off her hands and wrists, suddenly started worshipping.

“I don’t know how to price this… Do you have any idea?”

“Well, it’s my first time selling this potion too.”

The price for recovery potions was already set based on the level of recovery. But mine was a bit unique, so it was ambiguous.

“A minor recovery level is about 12 million won, but since this one has an urgent demand and new effects on our side…”

“Let’s go with 20 million.”

Hanul chimed in decisively.

“20 million should be fine, right?”

“I’m grateful.”

“20 million. Honestly, it feels cheap.”

While Kim Dong-gil said it felt cheap, I shook my head.

“Let’s consider it a connection. There might be a time when I need help from the guild leader later.”

“Well then, I’ll gratefully accept it without shame.”

Kim Dong-gil carefully inspected the three potions he received.

“Luckily, we have a joint subjugation with the Terror Guild mid-month.”

“Joint subjugation with the Terror Guild?”

“Oh, didn’t you know? We’ve been working on it diligently. We’re challenging a level 7 dungeon mid-month. Although it’s a joint effort.”

“I haven’t been keeping up with the news. A level 7 dungeon? Hmm…”

Hanul looked slightly worried, but Kim Dong-gil confidently shouted.

“We’ve been preparing thoroughly for the past six months! And with the industry-leading Terror Guild, we won’t fail!”

“If it’s the unresolved level 7 dungeon in Korea, could it be the one in Gangwon-do?”

“That’s right.”

“Hmm. If you clear it, the guild’s stock will soar instantly. But…”

Despite Hanul’s still doubtful gaze, Kim Dong-gil smiled confidently.

“Hanul! Trust me this once! I’m going to make a splash this time! Hahaha!”

I wasn’t aware that the Bare Fists Guild was subjugating a level 7 dungeon. Since I was always farming in dungeons, I had no way of knowing recent news.

‘I hope they don’t get hurt…’

With the number one guild in Korea, the Terror Guild, they should do well.

* * *

Rumble!!!

“Ugh!”

“Guild Leader!”

Time had passed, and Terror Guild and Bare Fist Guild were attacking the level 7 dungeon. Right in front of the final boss, trouble arose.

“Damn it…”

Looking at the injured Kim Dong-gil, the Terror Guild’s leader, Vice Director Choi, furrowed his brows. It wasn’t a look of criticism towards Kim Dong-gil but a reflection of his own inadequacy.

‘If I had been more careful, the Bare Fists Guild Leader wouldn’t have been hurt!’

But regret was fleeting.

In the urgent situation, Vice Director Choi shouted the predetermined code word and hurriedly headed towards Kim Dong-gil.

“Guild Leader! Are you okay?”

“P-Potion. I need a potion!”

A member of the Bare Fists Guild cried out, trembling. Seeing this, Vice Director Choi looked towards the supply unit, but the area was already chaotic.

‘This is bad.’

He tried to stay calm.

Fortunately, the strategy was going well, and the boss’s attack was nearing its end.

Boom!

“Wow!”

“The boss is down!”

“Haha! We cleared the level 7 dungeon! We did it!”

Unaware of the situation behind, the awakeners at the front line cheered. But soon, sensing a strange atmosphere, they whispered among themselves.

“What? What’s going on?”

“Is someone hurt?”

Then, realizing Kim Dong-gil had collapsed, the Bare Fists Guild awakeners rushed over.

“Guild Leader!”

“What on earth is going on! Potion! Where’s the potion!?”

At that moment, a supply team member shouted with a grim face, “We’ve run out of recovery potions! Does anyone on the front lines have any left?”

Recovery potions were given priority to the front-line awakeners. The system was designed so that if they got hurt during battle, they could use them themselves.

“…”

“I used mine up!”

“What? Does no one have any spare potions?”

“The boss’s resistance was tougher than expected. If I’d known, I would have just fought through minor wounds!”

Everyone fell into despair at the news that there were no potions left.

Just as they were deciding to quickly retreat from the dungeon…

“Ugh!”

“Guild Leader!”

Kim Dong-gil coughed and regained consciousness.

“Ugh. The subjugation?”

“The subjugation was successful! Now we just need to get out and get you treated!”

“No. If we do that, we’ll delay and miss out on the byproducts of the level 7 dungeon.”

“What are you talking about right now!”

“Heh.”

Kim Dong-gil pointed to his chest.

“I brought a potion with me just in case.”

“Oh!”

An awakener next to him pulled the potion out of Kim Dong-gil’s chest. But it looked a bit different from the usual ones.

“It’s an unauthorized, makeshift potion, so it wasn’t officially registered in the supply list. But if you look at the item label, it’s definitely a potion.”

“This, this is?!”

It was a peculiar potion from its name alone: a strawberry potion?

But as Kim Dong-gil had said, the effect was sure.

“Guild Leader, please stop talking and drink the potion.”

Surprised by the potion’s name and effects for only a moment, Vice Director Choi of the Terror Guild fed the potion to Kim Dong-gil.

Half of it was given to drink, and half was applied to his wounds.

A strong strawberry scent, out of place, filled the dungeon.

“Gasp!”

“Guild Leader?!”

Seeing Kim Dong-gil suddenly scream, everyone called out to him in worry.

But…

“It tastes so @$# good!!!!”

“…”

The atmosphere suddenly turned icy.

Palace 12

When the man, who seemed to be the leader of the thugs, called him “Boss,” Ian felt as if the puzzle pieces in his mind were fitting together. Meanwhile, the thug who had inadvertently removed Ian’s hood began to tremble.

‘Is it A?’

“Hmm…”

As Ian stared intently at the thug leader, the man immediately knelt down.

“B-Boss…! I apologize. I didn’t recognize you since you came in differently than usual.”

“I don’t even know your name, though.”

Ian’s joke made Alex feel a sudden fear of death. One of the notorious hobbies of the Third Prince was pretending not to know the names of people he was familiar with, which usually meant that the name would soon cease to exist.

“Boss, it’s me, Alex! The one who smoked incense with you and came in and out of the inner palace. Do you really not remember me?”

“Nope, I don’t recall at all.”

Despite Alex’s desperate tone, Ian smiled and answered nonchalantly, causing Alex to speak with a tearful voice.

“Boss, I’m the ‘A’ who sent that letter. Didn’t you come because of that letter?”

Seeing Ian’s interest in the content of the letter, Alex spoke in a hurried voice.

“I have an incense stick that I really wanted to show you, Boss. Would you like to come and see it?”

Patting Alex on the shoulder as he looked at him with desperate eyes, Ian said.

“Alex, how about we talk alone?”

Leaving his subordinates outside and being alone in the room with Ian, Alex’s anxiety reached its peak.

“B-Boss?”

Perhaps due to the darkness, Alex thought Ian’s ruby eyes looked blood-red.

“Hmm.”

As Ian’s low sigh echoed, Alex swallowed nervously.

“Alex, if you call me Boss, it means we’re close enough to be like brothers, right?”

Nodding eagerly as if his life depended on it, Alex replied.

“Yes, Boss. You were always so generous and friendly with us.”

“Why?”

Ian’s soft question made Alex feel momentarily indignant. Would it make sense for him to call a prince “Boss” on his own? Hadn’t the man in front of him ordered him to do so? The same prince who threatened to behead him?

However, Alex didn’t have the courage to voice these thoughts in front of Ian.

“That… well…”

At Alex’s hesitant answer, Ian held back a laugh and asked.

“What’s my title?”

“The Great Third Prince of the Helios Empire, Your Highness.”

Alex emphasized the word “great” more than anyone.

“And you are?”

“I’m Alex.”

It seemed the man in front of him had a knack for getting himself into trouble. If he were a real brother, he would have received a backhanded slap immediately.

Seeing Ian frown, Alex quickly added.

“I… I’m just a thug?”

“So, do you think it makes sense for a prince and a thug to be like brothers?”

Alex’s logical question almost made Alex reply with “It’s possible since you’re a rogue,” but he held his tongue. He survived in the organization thanks to his quick wit.

However, he couldn’t match Ian’s skill in reading people. Smiling, Ian put a hand on Alex’s shoulder.

“Why? Do you think the Third Prince, known as a rogue, can be like brothers with you?”

Feeling as if Ian could read his mind, Alex got goosebumps. It was a warning sign. There was only one way to deal with this.

Flatten yourself.

“Oh, Your Highness, please forgive me just once. I am just a street thug who never learned proper manners.”

“You’re quick-witted. But I still want to be like brothers with you, if you achieve enough merit.”

“R-Really?”

“Do you want to call me Boss?”

“If I could have that honor, it would be a blessing for generations!”

“Then there’s a way.”

Alex’s ears perked up unintentionally at Ian’s words. He didn’t want to lose the respect he gained by calling the Third Prince his boss.

“Do you know what principle our empire values the most?”

“That following the Third Prince’s words is the path and the light.”

Ian felt a bit embarrassed by Alex’s blatant flattery but continued.

“Have you heard of the principle of meritocracy?”

Alex tilted his head for a moment before answering.

“Isn’t it the principle of giving extra cake to those who do well and whipping those who don’t?”

“That’s right. So, if you achieve tremendous merit, I can give you a reward equal to that.”

“Boss, Your Highness, I wouldn’t mind even the whip if it’s from you.”

With a salesperson’s smile, Alex spoke to Ian. Ian thought he might be a useful guy, given his attitude in a situation where a single word could get him beheaded.

“Then there’s one thing you need to do for me.”

“Just say the word.”

“Will you return the money I gave you?”

At Ian’s polite threat, Alex raised his voice in disbelief.

“What do you mean?”

Even in that moment, Alex wondered if he would become famous among street thugs for being shaken down by a prince. No one else in the capital would have such a story.

“Haven’t you stashed away the money from the incense I bought over time?”

“Your Highness? I just watched you enjoy it; I didn’t stash any money.”

Even though Alex had the chance, he hadn’t taken the money, so Ian decided to let it go for now. Alex seemed to have a more innocent side than he initially thought.

As Ian continued to stare at him, Alex quickly changed the subject, fearing he might lose his emergency funds.

“Your Highness, would you like to see the incense you were supposed to receive today? The executives said it’s really amazing.”

“Well, I’ll look into your pockets later. Bring the incense.”

At Ian’s command, Alex had one of his subordinates fetch the item wrapped in a high-quality package from outside.

“Your Highness, this one will give a much longer euphoric time and an immense feeling of pleasure compared to the previous one. Even the scent from the package is amazing.”

Ian, who had never tried incense, smelled something sweet but didn’t feel any particular attraction.

“Is this really that effective?”

“Your Highness, why do you keep testing me? Aren’t you the most knowledgeable about incense?”

What kind of life had the original Ian lived before the age of fifteen? Ian, having no knowledge about incense, felt frustrated but decided to gather as much information as possible.

“What’s the name of this new incense?”

“It’s called Sweet Heaven.”

“Did you make it?”

At Ian’s question, Alex waved his hands.

“Boss, no, Your Highness, I’m just a delivery guy.”

At the word “delivery guy,” Ian frowned.

“A delivery guy dares to call me brother?”

“Well…”

Alex couldn’t say that no one else wanted to be around the prince, so he, as the lowest-ranking member, had no choice but to volunteer.

“Never mind that. Who makes it?”

When Alex hesitated to answer, Ian threw a warning punch.

“Don’t you realize your neck is on the line?”

Alex quickly gathered his thoughts and shared what he knew.

“These incenses are made by the Frank faction.”

While the emperor sometimes used the Katarina faction to check Duke Blake, Ian had never heard of the Frank faction.

“Frank faction?”

“One of the forces dividing the backstreets of the imperial capital.”

“And the other one is the Katarina faction?”

“Yes. The Katarina faction used to be the king of the backstreets. But the Frank faction grew just as large by selling incense well. I overheard that nobles support them, so the Katarina faction can’t touch them. They’re even friendly with the guards.”

Through his conversation with Alex, Ian learned a few things: someone was allowing the incense to be supplied to the inner palace, and the ‘Rose Inn’ and Baron Steel were likely connected to the Blake family.

Seeing Ian silent, Alex stopped talking. He felt that saying more might get him into trouble.

“You have a good sense.”

“Hehe, I get that a lot. That’s why my subordinates consider me their lifeline.”

Every time Ian saw Alex’s cheeky face, he felt an urge to smack him, but he decided to extract more information first.

“So, which faction are you from?”

“Um, I’m a low-ranking member of the Frank faction. No one else wanted to volunteer to follow you, so I had to…”

Realizing he had accidentally voiced his thoughts, Alex covered his mouth with his hands.

“Alex, I’ll give you two choices.”

Sweating, Alex felt he was about to hear something dreadful.

“Do you want to die here or do what I ask and live for a while?”

Alex, on the verge of tears, replied.

“But won’t I die either way?”

“No, if I still have tasks for you, you’ll live until then.”

“Can I choose the second option?”

“I’ll respect your choice.”

Alex sighed in relief, feeling he had saved his life.

“Alex.”

“!”

Ian smiled as Alex responded sharply.

“Find out the schedule for the incense coming into the inner palace.”

“How would I, a low-ranking member, know that?”

“If it were easy, I’d have found out myself.”

Ian’s words made Alex feel suffocated, but he couldn’t voice his dissatisfaction to a prince.

Strike 171

Prev I TOC I Next

The dying Arte was able to be saved by Belia.

“How could a mere blacksmith…”

Could it be possible to summon the Sword King and the Spear Heaven even with penalties?

Moreover, his guild members held immense potential beyond what a blacksmith could typically lead.

The most surprising thing was his quick thinking shown at the end.

He fought enemies with remarkable prowess and then, in the end, defeated the demon Grout with the skill of a master craftsman.

“……”

Arte stared at Hyun-soo’s back for a long time.

He felt an unknown strength from his broad, muscular build.

‘A kingly figure…’

Arte thought.

A great name that many kings in history had pursued.

The Sword King, the Spear Heaven, guild members.

Who else could embody all these paths other than Hyun-soo?

And Arte did not know.

Like Arte, the saintess Aria also saw Hyun-soo as a kingly figure once before.

And because of that, something special had been building up within Hyun-soo.

Anyway, Arte, watching him, approached.

He thought Hyun-soo was calming his chest after achieving a great feat.

“You…”

Arte tried to place his hand on Hyun-soo’s shoulder.

But before he could.

Plop.

Hyun-soo collapsed quickly, fainting.

“???”

Arte recalled Ben and Barad’s calm words at the Sage Tower not long ago.

‘He does that often.’

‘Our guy’s a bit frail by nature.’

Arte realized why they reacted that way.

‘Continuously to the extreme, again and again…’

He fought without falling or retreating.

And again, Hyun-soo fainted, holding immense power.

When someone does everything for you or for something related to you and then faints, it evokes feelings of gratitude and other emotions.

Arte stared at the fainted Hyun-soo for a long time.

One reward came to mind.

However, doubts crossed his mind if it was right to realize it as a sage.

Putting it aside for a moment, he supported Hyun-soo by wrapping Hyun-soo’s arm around his shoulder.

And Arte went down the remaining distance with Hyun-soo.

Arte’s heart swelled with emotion.

The Beres Mountain Range, where he had been trapped for 300 years.

[Arte succeeds in escaping the Beres Mountain Range.]

[You have successfully opened the cage’s door, letting the bird fly freely.]

It was a notification for the fainted Hyun-soo.

Seeing a new world at last, Arte looked up at the sky and smiled brightly.

And at the bottom of the mountain, the guild members of Bright Future were waiting.

“Fainted again?”

“At this rate, shouldn’t we give him an award for the best at fainting?”

Exhausted Arte also soon collapsed.

Hyun-soo and Arte were transported side by side to the Ballas Territory.

***

Hyun-soo tried to stay conscious before fainting.

The Arte’s Cage quest he received was not completely finished yet.

But contrary to his will, the system judged his body had reached its limit and made him faint.

When Hyun-soo woke up, he could see Nel sitting there.

“You’re awake?”

“What about Arte?”

“Master Arte is asleep in the next room. How about you log out and rest a bit more too, Hyun-soo?”

“Sure, but there’s something I’d like you to find for me first.”

“Something to find?”

Nel looked puzzled.

She suggested logging out because she wanted to show him the outside situation.

She wanted to show him what kind of impact was happening in reality.

But soon, Nel, realizing what he wanted her to find, smiled softly.

‘That’s so like Hyun-soo.’

She thought to herself.

Hyun-soo was sometimes emotional, yet at other times more calculating than anyone.

‘It’s because of such qualities that Hyun-soo could gather us.’

Nel liked Hyun-soo for that.

“I’ll find it as quickly as possible.”

Shortly after, Nel quickly gathered the information.

Hyun-soo immediately took action.

The place he arrived at was none other than the small village where Arte’s mother had lived 300 years ago.

The decisive reason Arte wanted to descend the mountain was to visit his mother’s grave.

‘Can I find it?’

Hyun-soo was worried.

She was a person who had lived 300 years ago.

He thought it wouldn’t be easy to find information about her here.

But something unexpected happened.

“Are you talking about the sage’s mother? Of course, I know. It’s a tragedy passed down through our village.”

Hyun-soo was left speechless hearing this.

“After the sage Arte, who was said to know all the information in the world, suddenly disappeared, his mother found out that he was in the Sage Tower in the Beres Mountain Range. She went to the entrance of the Beres Mountain Range at the same time every day. She couldn’t go up. The power of the demon prevented her from ascending.”

The villager telling the story gave a bitter smile.

“Every day, until the day she died, the sage’s mother went to the entrance of the Beres Mountain Range hoping to meet her son Arte. And one day, she stopped appearing in the village. She met her end near the Beres Mountain Range. A corpse? A grave? There was no such thing.”

“……”

Just as the sage Arte longed for his mother, she too longed for him.

Hyun-soo knew Arte would come here soon.

“I have a request.”

He said, taking out a gold coin.

He handed the gold coin to those in the village who knew the story as he went around.

And after passing on all the words, Hyun-soo rolled up his sleeves.

Hyun-soo, who had made something at the end, returned to the Ballas Territory.

***

As soon as Arte woke up, he asked about Hyun-soo.

“Lord Hyun-soo? He’s sleeping in the next room.”

And then he headed straight to the village where his mother had lived to meet her.

‘Doesn’t I know…’

A gravestone from 300 years ago couldn’t possibly exist.

Moreover, there was no one to make a grave for her.

Perhaps Arte’s intention to visit his mother’s grave was just a string of hope he held onto.

But then…

“Of course, it exists.”

Arte looked surprised.

He walked, guided by the villagers.

It was strange.

Something that shouldn’t exist.

It looked as if it had been made to appear old, but there was no hiding it.

[Sage’s Mother, Resting Here.]

“……”

The gravestone was there.

Arte had indeed seen it in the Beres Mountain Range.

He saw his mother, desperately waiting for him at the base of the mountain, crying.

And in the end, he saw her frozen to death after waiting for so long.

The curse of the demon Grout had been horrific.

“The words of people are light, and they become even lighter when it’s a good story.”

A villager appeared.

He spoke about the person who had given out gold coins.

He requested that no one mention the sage’s mother froze to death while waiting and to say that the gravestone had always been there.

Arte understood why this had been done.

Hyun-soo had said that although his father was close, they could not speak.

This stemmed from a mutual understanding between the two.

“It has been 300 years.”

Arte corrected himself as he spoke to his mother’s gravestone.

“No, it was even before I was trapped in the mountain.”

Arte had been the most arrogant person in the world.

Knowing all the information in the world was enough to make him so.

For exactly 376 years, he had not made a single friend, something everyone else had.

“…But now I have made one. A very good friend.”

He spent a day in front of the grave.

“I have decided on a gift for my friend.”

Arte then walked away.

***

Meanwhile.

Sniff, sniff.

Tae-seok gave a bitter smile as he watched Lee Ji-hee wipe her tears.

The reward following the remarkable storyline had already been determined.

The notification was proof of that.

[Sage Arte will stay in the territory of user Hyun-soo.]

However, even the remarkable storyline couldn’t predict additional rewards.

A remarkable storyline sometimes grants permission.

This permission means that even if the supercomputer Ares wants to give a reward, it won’t be stopped.

Tae-seok was curious about what Arte had said in front of the grave.

“He said he decided on a gift for him. What could it be?”

Sage Arte must have pondered deeply.

Whether to give something or not.

In fact, just having Sage Arte stay in Hyun-soo’s territory was an incredible reward.

And he had already given Hyun-soo the legendary skill creation as a reward.

There was no need to give anything else.

Ji-hee, blowing her nose loudly, spoke up.

“…Since it’s Sage Arte, wouldn’t he give user Hyun-soo something he needs the most?”

Tae-seok’s mind worked quickly.

‘What does user Hyun-soo need the most right now?’

When he thought of it, Tae-seok was astonished.

***

The great wizard Luwon and the absolute shield Peya.

Sage Arte had come to see these two of the top ten legends.

The two had received countless help from Arte until now.

“…So that’s why you stayed at the Sage Tower all this time.”

After hearing the whole story, the two nodded.

“The knowledge I have given you so far. Repay it this one time.”

“…For Sage Arte to say that, I understand.”

“Just this once, we will fight for you.”

Leading two legends, Arte set out to find what he sought.

Hyun-soo didn’t know where Arte was, and even if he did, obtaining it wouldn’t be easy.

However, with two legends, it wasn’t too difficult.

In the Deep Sea Graveyard, known as the harshest hunting ground in Ares, Arte obtained it.

Then he parted ways with the two legends.

Arte, holding onto it, headed to the Ballas territory to meet Hyun-soo.

***

‘Why isn’t he coming?’

Hyun-soo was consumed by various thoughts.

Arte had gone to his mother’s village and hadn’t returned for several days.

There were two reasons for Hyun-soo’s actions.

The first was his desire to complete the quest he had undertaken perfectly.

The second was the power of empathy he felt from Arte.

‘Is this how my connection with Arte ends? Is he planning to wander the world now?’

It was entirely possible.

Having been trapped for 300 years, Arte would likely want to explore the world.

At that moment.

“My lord, the sage has arrived.”

Hyun-soo’s face lit up.

Shortly after, Arte came in.

As he entered, he spoke.

“Thanks to you, I was able to pay my respects at my mother’s grave.”

Hyun-soo realized that Arte had discovered his actions.

Arte hesitated for a moment, grappling with the awkward and embarrassing words, and then said.

“I wish to stay here.”

“…!”

This was incredibly surprising news to Hyun-soo.

The legendary Arte would stay here.

It was excellent news.

The issue was this.

‘What will become of my relationship with Arte?’

Arte spoke.

“Exactly 376 years. I looked back on my life and found that I didn’t have a single one.”

Hyun-soo looked puzzled.

“A friend, that is.”

Arte initially didn’t understand Ben and Barad.

Now, he understood them better than anyone.

It was Barad who first wanted to become friends with Hyun-soo.

The second was Ben, who wanted to be friends with Hyun-soo.

And now, the one who wanted to be friends with Hyun-soo was Sage Arte.

“Will you be my friend?”

Hyun-soo smiled broadly, revealing his white teeth.

“Of course.”

[Sage Arte will stay in the Ballas territory.]

[Arte will provide countless help in the development of the territory.]

“This is my gift to a friend.”

Receiving it, Hyun-soo couldn’t help but look at Arte with astonishment.

‘This is…’

Hyun-soo had asked Arte in the two question opportunities to tell him the most suitable mineral for him.

The reason he asked was that it was essential for him to become a legend.

[You have obtained the legendary mineral, Seolhwa Stone (Snowfire Stone).]

Now, he had acquired it.

Act 126

Prev I TOC I Next

“Bring down Tenellon.”

Eleanor harbored such a blasphemous thought against the Grand Archbishop, but she still believed that it was too early to act directly.

The movement of the Dawn Society was still in the hands of the ‘Grand Archbishop,’ so if they acted hastily, the position of ‘Archbishop’ could become a prime target.

“At least for now, I’m grateful we managed to recruit Julian.”

A reliable ally.

No, calling him an ally might be misleading.

He was like a wind blowing as he pleased, and like thunder that could strike at any moment.

Disaster does not distinguish between friend and foe.

Eleanor was well aware that his sword could be pointed at her.

“Speaking of which, what has Pelkor been up to these days?”

Her specialty, and her curse.

Because of the ‘charm point,’ she had captured Monsignor Pelkor, but his whereabouts had become unclear, leaving Eleanor puzzled.

“You foolish girl! Didn’t I tell you to channel mana with these two wands?”

“Ah! Stop hitting me, you crazy old man!”

“Fine, since I’m crazy, I’ll hit you more! You wretched girl!”

“Ahhh!”

Walking down the corridor of the Mage Tower, Eleanor unconsciously turned her head towards the commotion.

‘Flugel?’

There, the central figure of the Mage Tower, someone whom all wizards revered like the sky, Flugel, was beating a young girl who had yet to shed her childishness with his staff.

‘I knew he had a nasty temper… but was he always like this?’

Flugel, usually so cynical that a chill seemed to flow around him, was being unusually passionate.

“Now, try it! Channel different elements into the two mana wands!”

“Za~ Trh~”

“Who told you to chant, you foolish girl!”

“Ahhh!”

‘For someone his age, he’s still very vigorous.’

Thinking this, Eleanor continued to watch the scene a little longer.

After a few more scolding words, Flugel threatened the girl and then left.

“Ouch…”

As soon as Flugel left, the girl who had been groaning in pain suddenly jumped up and started cursing.

“Damn old man.”

Then, following Flugel’s instructions, she grabbed the mana wands with both hands and began to concentrate.

“Think of the multiple mana veins within your body as being separated by walls; it will make it easier to approach.”

Maybe it was the strange scene she witnessed, but Eleanor, unusually for her, decided to meddle.

The girl, Meyer, looked up at Eleanor once, gave a disinterested look, and then began to concentrate again.

“…Hmm?”

Then, the two wands began to faintly glow with different colors.

Though it disappeared soon after.

“Really? By thinking of it as building a wall, it does feel a bit better!”

She gave a tip, but to master it so quickly.

‘But… this girl’

She remembered seeing her before. No, upon closer inspection, she was certain.

‘She’s the child from the nameless gang group that Julian brought.’

Was her name Meyer?

Fortunately or unfortunately, it seemed that the other party did not recognize her.

In a way, it was inevitable. In the Mage Tower, she acted as ‘Diana’ rather than ‘Eleanor.’

‘Anyway, how did this child end up here?’

Eleanor became interested in Meyer.

The nameless gang group was a group from the slums, far removed from the Mage Tower, which was the exclusive domain of nobles.

Yet, the reason ‘Meyer’ was here was…

‘Julian must have had a hand in it.’

It was an easy prediction.

After all, it was Julian who had brought this child here.

“Thanks, sis! For a bunch of stuffy wizards, you’ve got some sense!”

“Ha, haha…”

With an awkward smile, Eleanor opened her mouth to clear up her doubts.

“But, it’s a face I’ve never seen before… who introduced you to the Mage Tower?”

“Me? That…”

Meyer hesitated for a moment.

Was she filtering what she should and shouldn’t say in her mind?

Eleanor decided to speak first.

Even if it was just a little, she needed to gather information about ‘Julian.’

To find out what his next move would be, even if he was considered the opposite of Tenellon.

‘Wait a minute.’

A thought suddenly occurred to her.

‘Is it really necessary?’

Although Julian was a lone wolf, from her experience so far, he wasn’t someone who made incomprehensible choices as the rumors suggested.

More importantly…

‘He was the one who helped me secure the position of Archbishop.’

Until now, she had been overly sensitive to protect her position and the existence of the ‘Dawn Society,’ but she decided to adapt to the changing atmosphere within the Dawn Society.

“Ah, did Flugel recognize your talent? That’s impressive.”

No need for backdoor dealings.

The priority of what needed to be brought down was already set.

***

‘Meet with Colparan and pass the axis of rebellion to him.’

With that plan in place, the only important thing now was to put it into action.

“Then, could you guide me to Sir Colparan?”

When I spoke to Al Hazar, he nodded and was about to move when…

“I’ll accompany you, Sir Julian.”

Pintel also expressed his intention to join.

“Sir Colparan is not yet on our side. Nobles are prone to changing their minds as easily as flipping a hand. There could be dangerous situations, so I’ll accompany you as well.”

It was a commendable statement. But I disagreed.

The reason for finding Colparan was to pass on an important task to him.

However, if Pintel accompanied me, it might create an environment where it would be unnecessarily difficult to bring up certain topics.

“It’s fine.”

“But, it could be dangerous!”

Dangerous, indeed.

The kind of danger that affects me personally is something I can now handle to some extent.

But Pintel wasn’t wrong.

While discussing with Colparan, if things go awry, who knows what he might do.

Still, I shouldn’t show such concerns.

“Sir Pintel, this is Julian. There is no one in the empire who would harm me. Besides, Sir Hazar is with us, so there’s no need to worry.”

Saying this, I glanced at Hazar, who flinched slightly.

Hmm? His reaction is a bit strange.

While it wasn’t outright fear, there was something suspicious in his demeanor.

“Isn’t that right, Sir Hazar?”

Curious, I placed a hand on Hazar’s shoulder and smiled.

His face twitched again.

Seeing that, my suspicions turned into certainty.

‘It seems Colparan has other intentions.’

Colparan, who had been handling the main affairs of the Dawn Society, had not been very prominent.

The reason was likely that Tenellon’s grip on power was too strong for Colparan to have any chance to emerge.

But.

‘This time is different.’

Tenellon’s influence was slowly but surely waning.

Because of that, those who couldn’t raise their heads before would now start showing their faces, trying to grab any piece of power they could.

‘This might actually be perfect.’

Unlike the cautious Eleanor, if there was someone who could act freely, it would make it easier for me to step back.

***

‘If there’s a scheme, bring it on.’

Following Hazar with that thought, I couldn’t help but let out a laugh as we climbed the mountain path.

“We will soon reach Sir Colparan’s villa.”

Meeting at the Demias family’s mansion could raise suspicions, so Colparan suggested meeting at the villa.

However, walking this secluded mountain path was unexpected.

‘Your intentions are too obvious.’

If I had known, I might have brought Pintel along.

No, come to think of it, even knowing this, I didn’t bring him.

“We’re almost there, Sir Julian. Just over that hill…”

“Sir Hazar, I’m disappointed.”

Hazar continued to lie in front of me. Expressing my disappointment, I looked at him intently, and he showed a slightly troubled expression.

“What do you mean?”

I had felt a sense of camaraderie living in a foreign land.

“I understand that you came to find me on Sir Colparan’s orders, but bringing me all the way to such a remote place. What do you take me for?”

With those words, Hazar’s face filled with confusion.

“If you want to talk, shouldn’t you show the appropriate attitude?”

“So, you knew?”

“If I had to come to such a secluded place, it would be impossible not to notice.”

As I finished speaking, Hazar turned towards me and began to step back.

As the color of ‘fear’ began to rise over Hazar’s head, an old man with his hands behind his back and armed soldiers appeared from the ridge.

“Hehehe, I have been rude. I apologize, Sir Julian.”

In this situation, it is clear to anyone that this man is ‘Colparan Demias.’

“Sir Colparan.”

“But didn’t you say earlier that if we wanted to have a discussion, we should adopt the appropriate attitude?”

“Is this what you mean by the current situation?”

“Indeed.”

Colparan nodded.

“I am aware that you are trying to bring down the current Grand Archbishop.”

“Isn’t that what you desire as well, Sir Colparan?”

“Yes, I have long opposed his actions within the Dawn Society.”

“Then why are you acting this way?”

Instead of feeling a sense of crisis, I was more curious about Colparan’s actions.

“Well, I haven’t been here long enough to hand over everything to an outsider.”

“So, are you planning to kill me here?”

“No, I have no intention of killing you. Besides, you’re not that easy to deal with.”

Colparan, who had been smiling briefly, then hardened his expression and continued.

“Right now, the flow of the Dawn Society is divided between Tenellon and you.”

It seems he has his own thoughts.

As he said, killing me here to seize control of the Dawn Society would be a foolish move.

Though it’s unintentional, the current public opinion within the Dawn Society is leaning towards me.

“So, I plan to educate you. To ensure you don’t entertain any foolish thoughts, and to do so very thoroughly and clearly.”

As Colparan finished speaking, soldiers began to appear from all directions.

Heavily armed soldiers.

Well, if they hadn’t prepared this much to face ‘Julian,’ I would have been disappointed.

The soldiers with bows had their arrows drawn and aimed at me.

“Hmm… this is troublesome.”

Although my goal in meeting him was to transfer the current momentum to him, it doesn’t seem like this will be resolved with words alone.

However, if I comply with the ‘education’ that Colparan mentioned, it would leave a significant dent in the pride of ‘Julian.’

I feel the same way.

‘No.’

To be honest, in the past, I would have considered complying and trying to resolve it with words.

Avoid fighting.

Reject violence.

Even if I acted, I would avoid drawing blood as much as possible.

But as I have assimilated, some things have changed.

I, too, can now feel an overwhelming irritation in such an environment.

And ‘Julian’s’ personality has started to reveal a certain facet, fueled by that irritation.

[Emotions are heightened.]

[Trait, ‘Opened Eyes,’ has been activated.]

“Then I will also contribute to the ‘education’ Sir Colparan mentioned.”

At my statement, which seemed to pronounce a death sentence, the atmosphere around us began to freeze.

Round 78

Prev | TOC | Next

It has been a few days since my family came to visit.

During that time, I have been diligently farming and synthesizing slimes.

“Phew.”

Today is finally the first delivery day.

It’s my turn to deliver my crops and fruit juices to the guild that has been taking care of me all this time.

Of course, I get paid, but since my items are rare and can’t be bought elsewhere, it feels like a fair trade.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! It’s all done!”

“Oh! Good job!”

I packed the harvested crops into boxes and stacked them neatly.

Seeing the boxes piled up by type made me feel reassured.

The problem now was moving these outside and sending them to the guild…

Once the preparations were roughly finished, I stepped out of the dungeon.

There, guild employees were waiting.

Leading them was Hanul, who was looking at me with an expectant face.

“Kyu-seong, are you finished?”

“Yes. We just need to move them outside now.”

Hanul nodded and pulled out something.

A space-expansion artifact.

It was large enough to hold all my crop boxes.

“Hanul, you didn’t need to come personally; the staff could have just brought the artifact…”

“It’s the first delivery, so I need to be careful. You never know what might happen, Kyu-seong.”

Though I often saw Hanul, he always seemed unoccupied.

But in reality, the Ara Hongryeon Guild was a company comparable to a large corporation.

Having an executive-level person from such a company show up every time was slightly overwhelming.

I had no issue with Hanul himself; it was just the burden of his title as the Team 2 leader.

“Is it done?”

Ara peeked out from the dungeon, tilting her head.

Then she noticed familiar faces and waved her hand with a big smile.

“Hello!”

“Oh~! Our Ara has been working hard since the morning!”

“It’s fun! It’s not hard!”

“Haha! Alright, alright!”

After Ara and Kang Hanul greeted each other, they started moving the boxes in earnest.

100 boxes of cherry tomatoes, 50 boxes of carrots, 10 boxes of Layla, 100 boxes of potatoes, 70 boxes of sweet potatoes, 30 boxes of eggplants, 50 kg of Embergrill, and 50 boxes of strawberries.

Some items were rare, and some were not.

We packed them separately into boxes.

It was quite a large amount.

This was only manageable thanks to the slimes I had been consistently summoning every day.

‘I deliberately left out the cucumbers.’

Cucumbers… I thought they might cause a commotion, so I left them out.

The skincare benefits of cucumbers were quite significant.

Especially noticeable was Ara’s skin, which had become glossy and radiant from consuming a lot of cucumbers recently.

I’ll share them with my family.

Of course, without mentioning the effects.

“Haha! That’s a lot! A lot!”

“Hehe! Yes, a lot!”

Ara imitated Hanul’s laughter (though not quite similar) and then asked me,

“Are we going outside today?”

“Well, I could just hand it over and be done. Do you want to go out?”

“It’s been a while since I went out!”

True, I’ve been working hard since my family left, aligning with the delivery schedule.

And the crops planted in the Dungeon of Gluttony were nearing harvest time.

This might be the only time I could take a break.

“Awakened Kyu-seong, here is the advance payment in mana stones.”

“Oh, I see it.”

While the staff meticulously checked the quantities and placed them into the artifact, one staff member approached me with a small box.

I had agreed to receive part of the payment in mana stones, and it seemed they were handing it over now.

‘Since the Dungeon of Gluttony consumes mana stones…’

Half of today’s earnings were gone because of this.

Still, it was fine since I bought enough mana stones to fully recharge the Dungeon of Gluttony a few times.

“If we’re going out anyway, why don’t we go together?”

“Yes. Oh, just a moment. I need to change my clothes.”

I was still a bit grimy from working earlier. I didn’t mind, but our cute Ara should dress up nicely for an outing.

First, I returned to the dungeon with Ara to carefully store the mana stones.

“Ara, what should we wear today?”

“Hmmm…”

Ara’s expression turned thoughtful.

She now had so many clothes that it made her indecisive.

While waiting for Ara’s answer, I filled a basin with water and washed Ara’s face.

Ara obediently let me wash her face and then exclaimed,

“I want to wear this today!”

“The work clothes you’re wearing now?”

“Yes!”

Then she pointed somewhere.

It was where Ara’s other collection of hats was placed.

“A straw hat?”

“Yes!”

So today’s theme was farmer fashion.

Although the work clothes were a bit dirty, if Ara wanted to wear them, so be it.

After quickly washing her hands and face, I put the straw hat on Ara. The little tiger ears sticking out were cute.

“All set.”

Ara checked her reflection in the mirror with a serious face and clenched her fists.

It was just an outing, but she looked as serious as if heading into battle, which was a bit amusing.

‘I can never fully understand Ara.’

After getting Ara ready, I changed my clothes, washed my face, and quickly washed my hair before heading outside.

“Have you been waiting long?”

“Hm? Oh, I didn’t notice the time because I was working. You can go down first; we’re almost done here.”

I nodded, seeing how meticulously they were checking the crops.

After descending the mountain to wait, Hanul soon arrived. He smiled and pointed to a car.

“Haha! Get in!”

“Oh, is this your car, Brother?”

“I usually drive a company car, but I brought this one today to surprise you, Kyu-seong.”

“I see you so often that I wasn’t really surprised.”

“Ahem!”

It was one of the new mana stone cars. The design stood out, catching people’s attention as a luxury model.

Maybe I should get a car soon too.

Traveling with Ara and Gomgom made public transportation inconvenient.

“Why don’t you buy a car, Kyu-seong? You could get a guild discount.”

“Oh, there’s such a benefit? Then I might consider getting one.”

Parking might be an issue, but I could probably find a spot nearby.

“Ooh! Kyu-seong, are you getting a cool car like this?”

Ara exclaimed as she admired Hanul’s car, her eyes sparkling. The car’s robot-like appearance must have appealed to her.

“Shall we look at cars then? The payment for today’s delivery should come through soon.”

“Haha! Sounds good! But buying a car as soon as you get paid?”

“I’ve been needing a car for outings with Ara. We attract attention, and I have to take care of everything for long trips.”

“That makes sense. When you have a family, the first thing to get is a car.”

Family.

Thinking about it, I had quite a big family.

There were the slimes playing, or rather working, hard in the dungeon, the still-sleepy Gomgom, Ara beside me, and my family back home.

What a big family.

Of course, it’s just a thought unrelated to the car.

“Get in. I’ll take you to the dealership.”

“Yes.”

Ara wanted to sit in the front seat, so I held her in my arms and sat in the passenger seat.

As we started driving, Hanul asked,

“Kyu-seong, do you know what Choi Young-seong has been up to lately?”

“I’m not sure. I haven’t heard from him since he took those sweet potatoes last time.”

“He went to Japan.”

“Japan?”

“He went to the brewery that Ino Junichi set up. They’re both working hard to make alcohol with your sweet potatoes. Haha!”

I guess he got in touch with Ino Junichi again.

I wonder if Jae-seong is doing well.

While chatting with Hanul and Ara was glued to the window, looking outside, we arrived at the car showroom.

‘I’m suddenly nervous.’

Coming without a plan made me second-guess if this was the right thing to do.

The mana stone cars on display were all dazzling, making me wonder if I was pushing myself too hard.

“…I think I’ll just look around today.”

“Hmm? Well, that’s not a bad idea. Cars aren’t only here. But this brand’s mana stone cars are the best.”

“Yes…”

No matter how much money I made, my courage was still that of an ordinary citizen. I should buy a car after making a few more deliveries and saving up some money.

As the engine turned off, a showroom employee ran over with a bright smile. Ara, who had jumped out of the passenger seat, said to the employee,

“I want to see the coolest one!”

“Haha. What a cute guest.”

Welcoming Ara’s enthusiasm, the employee politely bowed and guided us.

“Are you here to look at cars?”

“Yes, just to look around…”

“Please, this way.”

It should be fine just to look around, right?

We weren’t the only customers in the showroom. As someone else was looking at cars, they noticed us.

“Oh?!”

Startled, the person hurriedly came over.

“Oh! What brings you here, sir?”

It seemed he was an acquaintance of Hanul.

Stepping aside, I watched Hanul approach the person and say,

“Kim Dong-gil. What brings you here?”

“Oh! I’m looking for a car for my son.”

“I see.”

Hanul nodded and then pointed at me.

“Introduce yourself. He’s our new ace at Ara Hongryeon Guild.”

“Haha. Hello. I’m not an ace, just a new member, Lee Kyu-seong.”

Kim Dong-gil, as he was called, gave a meaningful look and then said,

“Could you be the person behind the hot rumor lately?”

“A hot rumor?”

What was he talking about now?

As I tilted my head, Hanul burst into laughter.

“Haha! Yes, it’s true! No need to hide it anymore! This Kyu-seong here is the creator of the sweet potato treats you ate last time!”

“Gasp!!”

Kim Dong-gil staggered in shock.

What is this about? Why are you two discussing stories about me that I don’t even know?

“It’s an honor to meet you, Mr. Lee Kyu-seong! I’m Kim Dong-gil, and I run a small guild called Bare Fists Guild.”

Mr. Kim hurriedly took out his business card and handed it to me with both hands. Bare Fists Guild was a fairly well-known mid-sized guild.

“Oh, nice to meet you. So, you’re the guild leader of Bare Fists Guild. It’s an honor for me to meet the leader of such a renowned guild.”

“Oh, renowned guild? Not at all. We’re just a small guild barely getting by. Haha.”

Though he waved his hands in modesty, he looked pleased. A simple man.

While we were exchanging pleasantries, Kim Dong-gil’s eyes turned to Ara.

“Is she your daughter?”

“Pardon? Oh, yes.”

I smiled at Ara, who had now fully become my daughter. She put her hands on her hips and said cutely,

“I am the daughter of Lee Kyu-seong!”

“Haha, your way of speaking is unique. What’s your name?”

“I am Ara!”

“Oh, then you must be Lee Ara?”

“Huh? I only said Ara, how did you know I’m Lee Ara?!”

Ara was surprised when Kim Dong-gil added the surname ‘Lee’ to her name. Her cute and innocent reaction made the rest of us smile.

“Well? How do you think I knew?”

“How did you know? Are you a psychic, mister?”

“Hahaha!”

Kim Dong-gil responded as if watching the adorable antics of a grandchild, completely forgetting about me and Hanul.

Our Ara truly had a charming presence.

We continued to look around the showroom. Ara, deep in thought, soon got absorbed in looking at the cars.

“This one is cool too!”

“Oh, your daughter has a good eye.”

Ara, that’s the most expensive car here.

In the end, I didn’t buy a car; we just looked around.

Kim Dong-gil also decided to delay his car purchase and stuck with us as if he were part of our group.

“Do either of you have any plans after this?”

“I don’t.”

“Neither do I.”

When Hanul and I shook our heads, Kim Dong-gil asked hopefully,

“Then how about visiting our guild for a bit and having a chat?”

Palace 11

As Ian, who had taken the position of Tax Director, put his legs on the table and stared at Viscount Steel, the Viscount cautiously took a pouch out of his bosom.

“Your Highness, our tax collectors have prepared this with sincerity.”

Both Viscount Helington and Viscount Steel always prepared gold coins whenever they saw Ian, which made it hard not to praise the original Ian. After all, the more emergency funds, the better.

Receiving the quite heavy pouch and confirming its contents, Ian did not hide his rising smile. As tax office employees began to come in one by one and pile tax receipts on the table where Ian was seated, Viscount Steel spoke in a subtle voice.

“Your Highness, you must be tired from visiting the tax office today, and reviewing these documents might be exhausting. How about moving to another place to relieve your fatigue first?”

Not even touching the incoming tax receipts, Ian continued to fiddle with the gold coins in the pouch given by Viscount Steel, who began to feel relieved. Of course, Ian had no intention of ending it here.

“Viscount, it’s disappointing that this is all your sincerity amounts to.”

“Y-Your Highness?”

“I will proceed with my duties as an inspector. I will conduct one-on-one interviews with the tax collectors, so it would be better if you excused yourself.”

Thinking Ian was appeased by the gold coins, Viscount Steel looked visibly confused by the obvious dismissal.

“Y-Your Highness…?”

Ignoring Viscount Steel, Ian spoke loudly to the tax collectors outside.

“Come in one by one to the Director’s office. Anyone who tries to flee or lies in front of me will be reported directly to His Majesty the Emperor and beheaded for corruption.”

At the mention of corruption, the faces of not only Viscount Steel inside but also the tax collectors outside turned pale.

While Viscount Steel waited anxiously outside, Ian conducted interviews with the tax collectors but found no evidence of what he sought. Embezzlement involving money is often unknown to the employees; they just follow orders without questioning the rightness of them.

After interviewing all the tax collectors, it was finally Viscount Steel’s turn. He entered the room with a tense expression.

“Viscount Steel, I noticed one person missing from the personnel list.”

“Ah, he took a sudden leave today.”

“Hmm… I see. And now, we can finally be alone.”

At the word ‘alone,’ Viscount Steel couldn’t hide the tension on his face and responded.

“Yes, Your Highness, please speak.”

“Surely, what I’m holding isn’t the extent of your sincerity, right?”

Seeing Ian not asking about any corruption but wanting a greater display of sincerity, Viscount Steel felt relieved. He knew dealing with greed was much easier than handling someone with an ambiguous sense of justice.

Just like the inspectors he had manipulated in the past, Viscount Steel started envisioning the rewards he could get from Duke Blake by managing the Third Prince effectively with money.

“Of course, Your Highness. If you relocate, I will prepare what you desire additionally.”

“But I’m here as the tax inspector appointed directly by His Majesty. If I were to leave and play around, rumors might spread, and I could face reprimand from His Majesty.”

“Then how about meeting separately at night? You can perform your inspection duties diligently during the day and rest well at night. I can arrange for someone to come discreetly.”

At Viscount Steel’s suggestion, Ian spoke words that would make him let down his guard even more.

“I was rude earlier with so many eyes around. To think you prepared this much for me. I must apologize.”

Surprised by the sudden apology from the Third Prince, Viscount Steel waved his hands and said.

“Your Highness, why are you doing this? Serving the noble royal family is my duty and a glorious opportunity for a noble of the Empire. Your apology is completely unnecessary.”

“As expected, you have a heart as generous as this heavy pouch.”

Hearing Ian’s compliment, Viscount Steel’s doubts completely dissipated. He reaffirmed to himself that the Third Prince was just a 15-year-old child. The prince’s earlier performance was surely to display authority to the tax collectors.

“Your Highness, could you tell me what you wish to achieve through this inspection? I will do my utmost to assist you.”

At Viscount Steel’s subtle question, Ian answered with a broad smile.

“Viscount, where do you think the most money flows in the Empire?”

“Of course, in the capital of the Empire.”

“Exactly. Then where in the capital does the most money flow?”

“Isn’t it our Tax Office?”

Seeing Viscount Steel understand his words, Ian got even more into his act.

“This is the first time I’m saying this to you, but I couldn’t understand why His Majesty appointed a scoundrel like me as a tax inspector.”

“Could it be that His Majesty expects results from Your Highness akin to a ‘detector’ in tax matters?”

“I consider ‘detector’ as a stroke of luck. There are days like that, aren’t there? When a brilliant idea strikes once in a lifetime.”

Seeing Ian confide in him, Viscount Steel thought today was such a day for himself.

“And wouldn’t there be no big problem with someone like you managing the Tax Office?”

“How should I assist Your Highness?”

“I want to make a big haul but also avoid my father’s wrath.”

Emphasizing the word ‘wrath,’ Ian made his true intentions clear to Viscount Steel. If Ian was given just a small issue to make some achievement, this inspection could end successfully.

“Your Highness, if you put it that way, how could I not help you? Having this private conversation with me was indeed a wise choice.”

‘He’s hooked.’

“Thank you for understanding my heart. Still, as a tax inspector, if I said such things in front of other tax collectors, what would become of my dignity?”

“You did well. Leave the rest to me. I’ll handle things so that strange rumors don’t spread among the subordinates.”

At Viscount Steel’s words, Ian smiled and asked in a deliberately subtle voice.

“Could you tell me what preparations have been made for tonight?”

At Ian’s question, Viscount Steel answered in a sticky voice.

“Your Highness, a man of your stature naturally deserves to be close to alcohol and women. I believe you suit such a demeanor more than anyone.”

“Since the moment you handed me that heavy pouch of gold, I’ve been liking you more and more. But besides alcohol and women, isn’t there something that can make a big haul?”

After briefly pondering Ian’s words, Viscount Steel made a decision and spoke in a very quiet voice.

“Your Highness, have you heard of the Rose Inn?”

At the mention of ‘Rose Inn,’ Ian momentarily flinched, but Viscount Steel didn’t notice.

“This is my first time hearing of it.”

“We’ve shown a bit of leniency towards the goods coming in through the Rose Inn.”

“By leniency, you mean?”

When Ian asked, Viscount Steel made a money gesture with his fingers.

“What else could leniency in the Tax Office mean other than money? If this inspection concludes well, I can ensure you receive several times the amount of this pouch.”

Viscount Steel couldn’t hide his bursting laughter at the thought of involving the Third Prince in this matter. After the inspector passed, if a scandal broke out, who would the blame fall on?

“Several times, you say? I feel like I should call you my brother.”

“Brother, Your Highness, I am forever your loyal servant.”

“Shall we conclude today’s inspection here then?”

“Thank you for your boundless grace, Your Highness.”

“Viscount, however, I must keep up appearances for His Majesty and the Chancellor, so I’ll have the tax receipts moved to my palace.”

“A wise decision.”

After the meeting, both Ian and Viscount Steel returned to their residences with satisfied expressions. Viscount Steel felt the sunlight unusually bright on him.

The following night.

Ian successfully sneaked out of the inner palace through a secret passage prepared by Tom.

“Your Highness, I don’t think this is a good idea. I should accompany you.”

Despite Tom’s worried tone, Ian shook his head.

“If you’re not at the palace and someone visits at night, no one will be there to handle it. Do you understand?”

“Sigh… I understand.”

As Tom sighed and disappeared, Ian started walking towards the pleasure district. Even at night, it was easy to identify the pleasure district due to its unusually bright streets.

After walking for about an hour, Ian realized that the palace and the pleasure district were not that far apart. This heightened his suspicion that the Rose Inn might be involved in something shady.

When Ian entered the inn with a rose emblem openly displayed on its sign, a clerk greeted him.

“Welcome.”

“Is this the Rose Inn?”

“Yes, it is. Are you here to stay or use the tavern on the first floor?”

“I’ll wait on the first floor.”

Entering a tavern for the first time in this world, Ian felt it was similar to the pubs of his previous life. The boisterous noise from people who looked like mercenaries and those quietly sipping beer were familiar scenes to anyone who had read fantasy novels.

“Are you a guest staying here?”

“No, I’m meeting someone.”

“In that case, the basic rule is one drink per person.”

Perhaps because his features were covered by a hood and cloak, the clerk insisted on advance payment to prevent Ian from running off.

“How much?”

“3 silver.”

Ian checked his pouch and looked troubled.

‘I should have brought some small change.’

With no other choice, Ian handed over a gold coin, instantly changing the clerk’s suspicious gaze to one of respect.

“I’ll bring your change immediately, sir.”

Not wanting to reveal his initial suspicion, the clerk hurriedly fetched Ian’s change.

When Ian tipped 2 silver coins, the clerk bowed deeply and withdrew. This action not only impressed the clerk but also caught the attention of others in the tavern.

“Hey, pal, why don’t you share some of that with us too?”

Crack.

When Ian ignored their threats, the thugs grabbed their weapons and approached him.

“Come on, hand it over nicely, will ya?”

“Don’t ignore us!”

As one thug took advantage of Ian’s hesitation and pulled off his cloak, revealing ruby-red eyes contrasting with blue hair, the gang leader gasped.

“B-Boss!”

Seeing their boss address Ian as ‘boss,’ the other gang members froze in place.
