Strike 170

Prev I TOC I Next

Dyne Slyfe, Storm Bringer, Tyrving.

The demon sword is well-known to the public.

Some swords became famous from a novel, while others originated from Norse mythology.

And everyone must have heard of them.

The demon sword that absorbs blood.

The sword that consumes blood.

Or the demon sword that kills enemies unconditionally instead of leading the user to ruin.

This Tyrving was created with that as a motif.

In his childhood, Hyun-soo also encountered various demon swords and even made them.

Because he wanted to see those special demon swords that appeared in fantasy novels in real life.

And the power that dwells within this Tyrving.

It was about absorbing all the blood of the enemy.

Hyun-soo thought,

‘If the source of power is blood, then I will suck up all that blood and use it as my power.’

[The eighth legend is written.]

Tyrving, born from the fingertips of a genius blacksmith.

The sword, made entirely of blackness, gathers the blood raised by Grout during the blood festival.

The blood is sucked into Tyrving.

Kurrrrrr-

Grout uses his greatest climax ability.

The tremendous power rages within Tyrving.

The ground shakes, and heaven and earth are tumultuous.

The black Tyrving turns as red as blood.

[Blood power is accumulating in Tyrving.]

[53%]

[Blood power is accumulating in Tyrving.]

[89%]

[Blood power is accumulating in Tyrving.]

[132%.]

[Tyrving…]

[Tyrving…]

Ding!

[Accumulation complete.]

[583% accumulated.]

Grout could see that all the blood was being sucked into the sword.

His pupils shook.

Even the blood that was the source of his power flowing from his body was being devoured by the demon sword.

[Grout’s HP falls below 30%.]

[Blood Demon Grout Lv.378]

Also, Hyun-soo couldn’t even imagine it. He checked the quest window while making the sword.

[Last Quest: Slay Grout]

Grade: SSS

Restriction: The one who triggered the last story

Reward: Blood Demon’s Ring, unimaginable storyline rate, World Message.

Penalty if failed: Annihilation

Description: You have reached another story’s final story. Each step of another story increases in difficulty. Clearing this final story quest will take your storyline rate beyond imagination.

‘There’s even more surprising news.’

Just a moment ago, because of the “Help, friend” call, everyone summoned disappeared.

Barad and Ben would have had the highest contribution.

His own contribution would have been about 20%.

However, contribution disappears when those around die or disappear.

That means, the contribution for hunting the demon Grout will be 100% filled by Hyun-soo.

Hyun-soo extends his sword towards Grout.

[Use barbarians to control barbarians.]

“Kill the enemy with the enemy’s power.”

Grout felt a chill down his spine. The power that shook the heavens and the earth.

Hyun-soo pulled back the demon sword Tyrving behind him and put strength into his right foot planted on the ground.

“This is impossibleeee!”

The demon Grout charged. He was determined to kill Hyun-soo somehow.

But he felt it.

‘This is…?’

His body moved differently than usual. It was much slower than before, while Hyun-soo’s movements were faster.

Of course, it was natural.

The current Grout was merely a level 300 boss mob.

Finally, Hyun-soo swung the sword he had pulled back with all his might.

Skaaaash-!

A massive amount of blood covered a radius of 30 meters.

And in a split second, it concentrated above Grout’s head.

A small, round drop of blood formed.

But like a nuclear bomb, although small, it had the power to destroy everything around it.

[Blood Explosion]

[Within a 40-meter radius, it exerts the power of an additional 1,005% attack damage with the force of a blood explosion.]

[The title “Creator of the Strongest Blow” shines.]

[Double damage is applied.]

Finally, that small, round drop of blood struck Grout.

Kuwaaaang-

With a massive sound of destruction, everything around disappeared without a trace.

Hyun-soo knew.

‘A power that cannot be unleashed again.’

It was a power made possible by absorbing the blood festival.

Within that massive explosion, Grout couldn’t believe it.

‘I’m dying to a mere human?’

Grout’s eyes shook as his entire body turned to bone dust and began to disintegrate.

‘To a mere blacksmith…?’

With that last thought, Grout could no longer think.

The last thing he saw was Hyun-soo watching Tyrving disintegrate smoothly.

Soon, Grout completely vanished.

“Huff, huff.”

Hyun-soo’s chest was filled with a hot thrill.

He knew.

‘No famous ranker in the world would have killed a demon yet.’

The rewards for this valuable achievement are beyond imagination.

[You have hunted the Blood Demon Grout.]

[You have gained 3,310,010 experience points.]

Hyun-soo couldn’t believe his eyes.

‘Over three million…?’

It was beyond admiration; it was astonishing.

Moreover, Hyun-soo’s level was in the 320s.

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up…]

Hyun-soo leveled up a total of 13 times.

‘Thirteen levels from the 320s? I’ve never heard of such leveling up…’

Even the amount of gold was absurd.

[You have obtained 831,689 gold.]

Eight hundred million won in Korean currency.

It was the amount of gold he could only obtain by creating and selling a legendary artifact.

[You have obtained 8 Black Stones.]

[You have obtained Grout’s Fragment.]

[You have obtained the Blood Demon’s Ring.]

[You have obtained the Demon’s Byproduct.]

[You have obtained the Essence of Demons…]

[You have obtained the Demon’s Tail…]

The notifications kept coming for a long time.

Among them was an artifact Hyun-soo had eagerly anticipated in the reward list.

(Blood Demon’s Ring)

Grade: Legendary

Durability: Infinite

Defense: 130

Restriction: Level 330 or above

Special Abilities:

· All stats increased by 2%.

· Magic resistance increased by 50%.

· Attack power against evil increased by 10%.

· Attack power against good increased by 25%.

· Passive skill: Blood Absorption.

Description: This is the ring worn by the Blood Demon Grout. The power of this artifact is defined by the Blood Absorption skill.

(Blood Absorption)

Passive Skill

Level: None

Effect:

· Recovers HP equivalent to the damage dealt to the enemy.

· Activates with a 6% probability.

· Sometimes relieves mental fatigue when damage is inflicted on the enemy.

· Activates with a 1% probability.

· Only applies to normal attack damage.

Hyun-soo was amazed.

Despite the 6% activation chance and application only to normal attack damage, the Blood Absorption passive was incredible.

Potions cannot be used indiscriminately because they have a cooldown time.

In contrast, this could be used indefinitely, saving potion costs.

It even recovers HP equal to the damage dealt.

This ring’s most remarkable feature is its effectiveness when facing multiple enemies.

In battles against many enemies, Hyun-soo will continuously recover thanks to this effect.

[Final Quest: Slay Grout completed]

[Completed with astounding achievement.]

‘The storyline rate must serve as a link that provides some reward.’

Of course, he couldn’t know what that reward was.

But the higher this storyline rate, the greater the return for Hyun-soo.

Especially since the quest reward mentioned it.

An unimaginable storyline rate.

He couldn’t even begin to estimate how high this storyline rate was.

The notifications kept coming.

[Additional storyline rate accrued for progressing through another story step by step.]

‘Oh…!’

The tasks Hyun-soo had accomplished step by step.

[Linked Quest: Blood Demon Grout’s Fragment]

[Storyline rate increased by 10%.]

[Linked Quest: Incoming Monsters]

[Storyline rate increased by 10%.]

A total of 20% additional accrual.

As a result, Hyun-soo’s total storyline rate exceeded 90%.

Finally, an additional notification came.

[Storyline rate accrued for the Final Quest: Slay Grout.]

[The system recognizes your remarkable achievement.]

[It is estimated that the level difference between you and Grout is over 200 levels.]

[Additional storyline rate accrued for that difference.]

[Storyline rate increased by 20%.]

At the end, the storyline rate for the final quest was reported.

[Storyline rate accrued for slaying the Blood Demon Grout.]

[Storyline rate…]

Hyun-soo could hardly believe his eyes.

He wondered if this figure was even normal.

But he soon understood.

Hyun-soo was at a low level, and this quest would have been difficult for any high ranker to clear.

Moreover, this quest was of SSS grade.

Hyun-soo’s quest was of the same grade as those legendary quests.

In fact, there had been less than ten successful clearings of SSS-grade quests.

‘I did it.’

The manifestation of the extraordinary skill, Help, Friend.

The ghost steps powered by the skill Connection.

All were rewards for the path Hyun-soo had walked.

[Congratulations.]

[You are the first user to successfully hunt a demon.]

[World Message.]

[Your achievement will be announced to all users worldwide.]

[You can choose to be anonymous or use any name or character name you want.]

Hyun-soo closed his eyes and thought for a moment.

The World Message could be anonymous or use a character name.

Hyun-soo could choose to hide his identity and still activate the World Message.

There was a reason for this consideration.

‘People still don’t know that Crazy Rookie and Hyun are the same person.’

Because of this, the fact that Blacksmith Hyun was strong could be revealed.

Hyun-soo soon sorted out his thoughts and smiled.

‘No, that won’t happen.’

The puzzle in Hyun-soo’s mind was complete.

And Hyun-soo needed it.

‘The power that this World Message brings.’

Hyun-soo did not hesitate.

The World Message echoed throughout the world in the name of Blacksmith Hyun.

***

Lee Se-jin, who was on his way to the airport, stopped the car.

He was amazed as he watched the anchor’s comments flowing on the billboard and the related World Message text scrolling at the bottom of the screen.

He immediately asked Tae-seok the most curious question.

“What was the storyline rate achieved?”

Tae-seok’s voice soon came through.

-234%.

Se-jin was astonished.

The storyline rate is harder to accumulate compared to regular quest percentages.

While a regular quest might accrue 2%, the storyline rate of Another Story would only accrue 1%.

[The storyline rate for the Grout slaying has accumulated a whopping 120%.]

Se-jin couldn’t even imagine it.

He was trying to predict what rewards Hyun-soo might receive.

Where would Arte go with nowhere else to turn?

‘There’s a possibility that Arte might give additional rewards.’

A remarkable percentage often hints at a significant reward.

Though it’s not always the case due to the high degree of freedom.

‘What exactly can he gain?’

Ending that thought, he pondered another.

‘How was user Hyun-soo able to defeat a demon?’

It was something he deemed impossible by common sense.

Soon, he learned about the skill Hyun-soo had created.

The hand holding Se-jin’s phone trembled slightly.

Sword King Barad, Spear Heaven Ben.

Simultaneously summoning Bella and the Guild Bright Future members.

It was even a unique-grade skill with penalties.

And he wondered,

‘Who dares to call Barad and Spear Heaven Ben friends and summon them?’

Only Hyun-soo could be such a user.

This had to be acknowledged.

‘It was the power of user Hyun-soo. It was neither a balance breaker nor anything else.’

Se-jin soon got back into the car.

As he headed to the airport, he thought,

‘Why did user Hyun-soo use the World Message under his own name?’

It’s a double-edged sword for him right now.

Se-jin knew he was hiding his identity.

Se-jin thought deeply for a moment.

‘Users wouldn’t think Hyun was the one who caught the demon.’

He gave a small smile.

‘He’s a very clever user.’

Se-jin boarded the plane.

Sitting in a first-class seat, he closed his eyes.

A peculiar smile spread across his lips.

‘The rewards user Hyun-soo will receive aren’t over yet.’

Se-jin intentionally did not check the reward right then.

The plane flew for 12 hours.

‘The world must be in an uproar.’

Everywhere around the globe.

On the other hand, Se-jin felt proud of Hyun-soo.

After getting off the plane and getting back into a car,

Se-jin finally entered the auction house to confirm what he had been eagerly anticipating.

“This is insane…!”

He couldn’t help but exclaim in astonishment.

What he saw was the number of subscribers to Hyun’s blacksmith shop, which had skyrocketed explosively in just 12 hours.

It had increased to a level that could truly be described as insane.

Act 125

Prev I TOC I Next

The cold air settles on the ground.

The hostility and overwhelming “magic” piercing the skin clearly showed how powerful Tenellon had become over time.

“Who told you that?”

A secret that must not be revealed to others.

The look of displeasure on Tenellon’s face indicated that he suspected his secret had been uncovered.

His actions were incomprehensible not only to ordinary people but also to members of the Dawn Society.

He never expected that his previously calm emotions would be so agitated by the absurd claim of hearing ‘voices.’

“Was it Eleanor? Now that I think about it, Eleanor was one of the bishops who sought to induct you into the Dawn Society. It’s entirely possible.”

“No, I haven’t heard anything from her. She merely told me to enjoy the meal with the Grand Archbishop today.”

“Then how do you know about the ‘voice’?”

Very few people are aware of Tenellon’s secret and shame.

I wouldn’t have known either if I hadn’t played through multiple scenarios.

Clack.

Whatever he was thinking, Tenellon set down his knife, rubbed his chin a few times, then his pupils suddenly gleamed brightly.

“Julian, do you also hear the whispers?”

I clicked my tongue inwardly at Tenellon’s question.

“How could that be? I merely guessed based on your remarkable foresight, Sir Tenellon.”

I tried to shift the flow of conversation by slightly flattering him, but Tenellon’s discomfort didn’t seem to dissipate much.

Is that not enough?

“For instance, the Soul Stone transported by Bishop Pintel. Even though they were acquired by a rather obscure merchant, you pinpointed it accurately and sent Bishop Pintel, didn’t you?”

Adding a bit more to the story seemed to somewhat ease Tenellon’s sharp atmosphere.

The hostility and magical pressure felt on the skin had somewhat loosened.

It seems he’s always been susceptible to flattery.

“Perhaps Sir Tenellon possesses something akin to foresight. That’s what I thought.”

………… Is he finally calming down?

The hostility and magic completely vanished as if they were never there.

And here’s the key: never mention the word ‘Demon God.’

Delving that deep would surely provoke Tenellon’s suspicion.

It’s something only he knows.

Furthermore, he might start to see me as a rival, which would be quite troublesome.

Speaking of which, looking at Tenellon, still with vacant eyes and a defeated expression, like he’s lost everything.

‘I was only guessing, but it was true!?’

It’s one of the episodes I rarely saw even after playing the game for five years.

‘Tenellon’s Rampage.’

An event triggered when the magic of a bishop who rose to archbishop after Tenellon intensifies even further.

Eleanor couldn’t possibly be, and someone else is threatening Tenellon’s position…

Moreover, in the game “Let’s Kill the Demon Lord,” the root of all evil, the ‘Demon God,’ is a long-dead ghost of the past.

Even though its corpse scattered thoughts across the northern continent, it is indeed dead.

‘If it were alive, the story wouldn’t progress.’

This game is all about preventing the ‘Demon God’s’ resurrection and defeating the ‘Demon Lords’ attempting the resurrection.

If the ‘Demon God’ were alive, the only message would be ‘Game Over.’

‘That Demon God gives faint revelations to those most likely to resurrect it.’

That is the true nature of the ‘voice.’

Though it only provides minimal information, just small tips, it will still be of some help.

It’s better than knowing nothing.

‘But…………, those whispers can no longer be heard?’

Judging by Tenellon’s reaction, it seems certain.

That means, while he is indeed a candidate for the ‘Demon Lord,’ he is no longer the closest one to becoming it.

In other words, he has been pushed from the top position.

‘Who is it.’

The one who has become closer to the ‘Demon Lord’ than Tenellon.

***

The meal with Tenellon ended without any particular incident, and I returned to the mansion.

I thought he would exert some pressure regarding Aiden’s death, but it passed so anticlimactically that I felt a bit deflated.

I had prepared a lot in relation to it.

“It could mean that he has lost interest in the Dawn Society.”

As if to echo my thoughts, a familiar voice came from behind.

Turning around, I saw Pintel sitting in a chair.

“Hmm.”

I let out a short groan at Pintel’s words.

Having heard some story from Eleanor, I had urgently called Pintel after my meeting with Tenellon.

There were too many things I needed to ask him.

And for someone who initially came to dismantle the Dawn Society, such news was favorable.

Tenellon’s strength was not a lie, and the fact that he was beginning to falter was indeed good news.

The problem is the direction things are heading.

“Sir Pintel.”

I cautiously sat down opposite him and mentioned his name.

“Yes, Sir Julian.”

Pintel responded as if it were the most natural thing. His demeanor was like that of a soldier on high alert.

“What exactly are you up to?”

Previously, Eleanor mentioned that Pintel was at the center of the plan to bring down Tenellon.

It was I who ordered it.

Unbeknownst to me, I had become the central figure of a coup.

Really…………… I didn’t do anything.

The only thing I ordered was for Pintel to keep an eye on Korund.

What is unfolding beneath the surface?

“What do you mean by that?”

“I mean, what have you been scheming with the other bishops lately?”

So I asked again.

What have you been up to lately?

“I have been carrying out the ‘task’ you desired.”

The task I desired?

“Seeking higher ground.”

Pintel grinned like a shadowy mastermind operating in the shadows.

“I have been meeting with other bishops and monsignors, probing them. The recent actions of the Grand Archbishop are not typical.”

You’re doing well.

‘If we bring down Tenellon, the candidate for the Demon Lord, the Dawn Society will not be a significant threat to me.’

As I’ve said repeatedly, my goal is to live well and maintain my mental health to avoid being consumed by Julian’s persona.

Even if there is an organization operating within the empire, as long as it doesn’t threaten my well-being, I can leave it be.

‘But why am I becoming the central figure in all this!’

What I wanted was the eradication of the Dawn Society, not its revival.

“How many bishops and monsignors have you contacted so far?”

I asked just in case.

If the scale of persuasion isn’t too large, it should be possible to withdraw.

Just toss those guys to Eleanor and wait for the bomb to go off from behind, isn’t that enough?

“I have finished talking with many high-ranking members of the order.”

So, how many exactly?

“Excuse me for being presumptuous, Sir Julian. Would you be willing to meet with Bishop Colparan?”

“Colparan…?”

Hearing an unexpected name, I felt a bit of interest.

Bishop Colparan. Full name, Colparan Demias. He holds a key position in the Demias family, one of the founding families of the Dawn Society, earning the trust of many bishops.

‘The trust of bishops, huh.’

Is this some kind of villainous camaraderie? It’s absurd when you think about it.

“Yes, if we can bring him over to our side, many bishops will surely change their minds.”

No, I would prefer they didn’t change their minds.

“Originally, the Dawn Society is not a cult that worships Tenellon, but a group that supports the by-products of handling magic and condemns the premature succession of the archbishop.”

“Sir Colparan…”

Just as I was about to scold Pintel for another unnecessary action, I realized something.

‘Even if I say it, Pintel is unlikely to stop.’

So, I began to think of another way to back out.

‘If I speak directly to Colparan here, won’t I be able to distance myself from being the central figure?’

Colparan, to a certain extent, stands in opposition to Tenellon. As one of the founding members of the Dawn Society, he is not fond of Tenellon, who arbitrarily succeeded the position of ‘ Grand Archbishop.’

‘Moreover,’

Even while taking a stance against Tenellon, Colparan is still alive, indicating his significant influence within the Dawn Society.

In the game, it wasn’t to this extent. He was someone who expressed dissent against Tenellon and ended up in a sort of exile far from the capital.

Could this be advantageous to me?

Realizing this, I thought of a way to navigate this situation.

‘Let’s hand over the members Pintel gathered to Colparan.’

That way, if things go wrong, I won’t be held accountable. The large target of ‘Colparan’ could also hide my involvement.

“By the way, you mentioned you contacted many members of the order?”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“Can you tell me the exact number?”

“I have finished talking with about 25 percent of the high-ranking members.”

“Does that mean they all sided with you?”

Pintel tilted his head at my question.

“No, they sided with ‘Sir Julian,’ not me.”

Seeing Pintel’s smooth talk, I had to revise my assessment of him.

This guy is too competent for his own good…

***

I wondered, during my previous gameplays, how much of a nuisance Pintel would have been if he had survived.

As I thought that, I turned my gaze to the man Pintel introduced.

The man who entered the reception room had a somewhat exotic face and dark skin, giving the impression that he was not from the Empire.

‘He’s from the desert tribe, Sura.’

There’s a vast desert in the southern continent. Beyond it lies a country inspired by the ‘Middle East.’ However, being a small nation built on a harsh desert, its national power is weak.

“Oh, come to think of it, I’m late in introducing him! Sir Julian, this is Al Hazar from the Sura Desert…?”

“He’s from the Rahman tribe, isn’t he?”

I glanced at the curved sword at Hazar’s waist and spoke.

The game “Let’s Kill the Demon Lord” was a hobby and a form of leisure for me. Thanks to that, I knew all the settings, and just by seeing the shape of the curved sword, I could identify one of the many desert tribes.

However, Al Hazar, who was watching me from up close, seemed to feel differently. His eyes widened in surprise, and he couldn’t speak properly.

It’s understandable.

There are so many tribes living in the harsh desert. Given the closed nature of desert tribes, many of them are unknown to the outside world.

Yet, I identified his origin with just one glance.

“This man will guide you, Sir Julian. Originally a knight of Sir Colparan, it was Al Hazar who bridged the connection to him.”

“Is that so?”

When my eyes turned to him, Al Hazar flinched.

“Life in a foreign land must be tough. You’ve been through a lot, Sir Al Hazar.”

I encouraged Al Hazar. For some reason, the feeling I had towards him was ’empathy.’

From ‘Julian’s’ perspective, this world is familiar, but to me, it’s just a foreign land. Therefore, I felt a small sympathy for Al Hazar living in a foreign land away from the desert.

“Th-thank you.”

However, it seemed Al Hazar did not want to understand such feelings of empathy. The color of ‘fear’ was evident above his head, and the hand shaking mine was trembling.

‘What did I do wrong?’

I just greeted him, didn’t I?

***

The truth is, Al Hazar is here following Pintel because of Colparan’s orders.

– Like a shadow… follow the bishops and report the situation to me.

Having unwillingly become an old man left in the background due to Tenellon’s rise, Colparan was waiting for the right time to take control of the Dawn Society. That’s why he sent Al Hazar to Pintel.

‘No way…’

For the first time in his life, Al Hazar met someone who knew about his tribe, the desert’s Rahman tribe. The problem was that this person was the infamous ‘Julian,’ this man with slitted eyes.

“Then, I’ll be relying on you to guide me to Sir Colparan.”

Despite Julian’s polite request, Al Hazar stood there blankly. He thought he had been carrying out Colparan’s orders quite well.

‘Did he notice that I’m moving on Colparan’s orders?’

It was as if Julian had done a background check on him, even before mentioning his information.

Round 77

“Mmm, this is nice!” Frey, the Queen of Alfheim, murmured lazily as she soaked in the warm hot springs.

Thanks to Kyu-seong, who had recently discovered the existence of the hot springs, Frey often came here to relax in this way.

“Wow! I can’t believe there’s such a wonderful place!”

“Thank you, Your Majesty! We appreciate you not keeping it all to yourself and sharing it with us!”

“No, no! Let’s be honest, we only found out because we followed the Queen here! Hehehe!”

Beside Frey, many Alfheims were enjoying the hot springs in their own ways.

“Ah, so refreshing!”

“Try this! It tastes weird!”

“Ugh! What a strange taste!”

Frey, who wanted to enjoy some quiet time alone, felt a vein throb on her temple.

“This is why I wanted to come alone! I wasn’t being selfish!”

Frey eventually started to voice her complaints and pointed her finger.

“Did you all finish your work before coming here to play?!”

“Of course, Your Majesty!”

“We hurried and finished our tasks when we heard you were going somewhere mysterious!”

While Frey was trembling with frustration at the fairies who left her speechless, someone urgently approached.

“Your Majesty!!”

“What is it?”

“His Highness, the Archlord, is coming!”

“What?! The Archlord is coming here?!”

Frey quickly glanced around.

Fairies were floating and splashing noisily in the crowded hot springs.

“Oh no!”

This was the healing spot of Archlord Lee Kyu-seong. Frey had been secretly using the place while he was away, and she feared what might happen if he saw this scene.

“Everyone, hide!”

“Hide!”

Despite the urgent shouts from Frey and the messenger, the fairies barely listened. Having been fooled by Frey once before, they thought she was again trying to enjoy the hot springs alone.

“The Archlord is coming!”

“The Archlord?!”

However, reactions started to come from the fairies closer to Kyu-seong’s approaching direction.

“?!?”

“His Highness is here!”

“Everyone run! I mean, hide!”

The fairies, feeling guilty about using the place known to be Kyu-seong’s, scattered in all directions, causing even more chaos in the hot springs. Frey muttered as she watched the chaotic scene.

“We’re doomed.”

* * *

“Hmm?”

As we reached the hot springs, we saw something bustling. Though not clear due to the steam, it was evident that a commotion was underway.

“What’s going on?”

Seon-ah shrunk back, looking cautious. My parents also hesitated and looked at me.

“Not sure. What is it?”

“They’re fairies!”

“Fairies?”

As I squinted and focused my vision through the steam, I began to see something faintly. When Ara mentioned fairies, I realized that indeed, they looked like fairies, confirming my thoughts.

“They must be here for fun.”

Previously, Frey had also come to enjoy the hot springs and must have informed other Alfheims about it. Imagining the cute fairies enjoying the hot springs made me smile.

“But why are they so frantic?”

I wondered if something had happened. Sensing the uneasy atmosphere, I reassured my family.

“They’re tiny fairies. There’s no need to worry.”

“Fairies?”

“Yes, like those in fairy tales. They’re very gentle and cute, and you’ll probably like them.”

My parents, still puzzled, seemed to doubt it, while Seon-ah, who had been tense, relaxed and her eyes sparkled.

“Cute… fairies…?”

Hmm. I think I shouldn’t have mentioned it to Seon-ah. She quickly moved forward with her switch flipped. Ara and Gomgom followed right behind her.

“I’m coming!”

Ara beamed brightly as she rushed toward the hot springs. It was clear that she was eager to greet the fairies.

ヽ(゚Д゚)ノ!!

(☍д⁰)

However, for some reason, the fairies were panicking and running away.

“Why are they doing that?”

Realizing something was odd, I hurriedly approached. Then I saw Frey, partially hidden behind a small rock, with only her head poking out. Anyone could tell it was Frey because of her wings.

“Frey? What are you doing there?”

Flinch!

Frey shivered slightly but didn’t respond, still believing she hadn’t been discovered. Then, Ara, oblivious to the situation, approached Frey and poked her with a finger.

“Eek!”

“I found her! Frey is the seeker!” Ara exclaimed, raising her nose proudly as if seeking approval from Seon-ah and me.

“Oh, you’re here?”

“Oh! Frey, how have you been? What’s going on? Why are the kids running around like that?”

“Huh? Oh, the kids? Where?”

Frey stammered like a broken machine. Couldn’t she see the fairies running wild everywhere? Her eyes were spinning, clearly overwhelmed.

I took a strawberry from my backpack and forcibly handed it to Frey.

“Huh? What’s this?”

“It’s a fruit… or maybe a vegetable? Anyway, it’s a strawberry. Eat it to clear your head.”

Frey, holding a strawberry almost as big as her body, tilted her head and looked up at us. Her expression seemed to hit Seon-ah directly, who was now taking photos of Frey holding the strawberry with an intense focus.

Click! Click!

Watching Seon-ah silently engrossed in taking pictures was starting to feel a bit unsettling. Meanwhile, my parents approached and observed Frey and the fairies.

“They really are fairies!”

“Wow, it feels like I’m in a dream.”

The fairies, who had calmed down a bit, peeked out from behind the rocks, curiously watching Seon-ah and my parents. My mother, seemingly enchanted by their sparkling eyes, crouched down and gestured.

“Come here.”

Though they didn’t understand her words, the fairies seemed to grasp her meaning and slowly revealed themselves.

“Aren’t they just adorable?!”

Seon-ah, now filming a video, had eyes that sparkled with determination.

“I must post this on my vlog and share this cuteness with the world. Keeping this to yourself, brother, is a major crime!”

“Haha.”

As I laughed awkwardly, Ara took out another strawberry from the backpack and handed it to Gomgom. She then sat next to Frey and popped a strawberry into her mouth.

“Mmm!”

Frey, seeing Ara enjoy the strawberry, cautiously took a bite herself.

“Mmm!”

Frey’s eyes widened in surprise, and she began eating the strawberry earnestly. Although she usually only nourished herself with Meluca honey, it was clear she could taste and enjoy the strawberry.

(о゚д゚о)?

( ・ω・)ノ

Seeing Frey’s reaction, the fairies approached with curious expressions. Ara, noticing a few of them sucking their fingers, took out more strawberries and shared them.

“Let’s all eat together!”

A spontaneous strawberry party started at the hot springs.

My parents, forgetting they were at the hot springs, were engrossed in observing these tiny beings.

“Excuse me, Archlord.”

“Yes?”

“Are these new friends of yours?”

“Oh, this is my sister, and these are my parents.”

“Gasp?! The Archlord’s family!!”

Frey, speaking while eating a strawberry, gasped, causing the strawberry juice to dribble down her chin.

This scene felt oddly familiar…

“I… I didn’t recognize the Archlord’s family…!”

“Why do you always treat me so formally? Just be comfortable.”

“As expected, the Archlord’s heart is as vast as the sea!”

Every time I said something, they praised me so much that I felt confused. I didn’t dislike it, but it felt like I was being teased?

“By the way, why were you all so frantic earlier? Were you really playing hide and seek?”

“Well… that is…”

Frey, looking troubled, still clutched the strawberry tightly. Finally, she squeezed her eyes shut and shouted.

“I’m sorry! We dared to use the Archlord’s private hot spring without permission!”

“What? My hot spring?”

Frey, eyes still closed, trembled but continued to munch on the strawberry. The sight of her eating despite apologizing was quite amusing.

“This isn’t my private spot. Anyone can use it. Nothing here belongs solely to me; it’s for everyone to share.”

“!?”

Frey, chewing on her strawberry, looked shocked again, her jaw dropping. Was she going to waste another strawberry?

“…What a generous Archlord! We are truly blessed!”

“I don’t care what you think, but since we’re here, we’ll enjoy the hot springs too. Is that okay?”

“Of course!”

“Don’t feel guilty. Just enjoy it. I was wondering why you were making such a fuss.”

It seemed they thought they were using the hot springs without permission. No wonder they panicked when I showed up.

When Frey relayed my message to the fairies, they cheered in their own way. Watching this adorable scene made me feel quite content.

“Oh my, oh my. Yes, come on up.”

The fairies, now feeling reassured, interacted freely with my parents and Seon-ah. Some of the fairies climbed up my parents and Seon-ah, chattering in a language we couldn’t understand.

“So cute!”

“Haha.”

Seon-ah had put her phone down and was now engaging with the fairies, while my father, usually reserved, was smiling broadly as he tickled the fairies.

Splash!

“Phew.”

Already familiar with the fairies, I got into the hot spring first. It was a bath known for its restorative properties. Although I wasn’t particularly tired, this bath was my favorite.

“Ah, this is nice!”

Murmuring like an old man, I leaned back and looked up at the sky. Then, I noticed fairies peeking out and looking down at me.

“Want to bath together?”

-(≧∇≦)!!

I didn’t understand what they said, but soon the fairies were floating around in the bath. They seemed light enough to float on the water.

“This feels refreshing.”

My father followed me into the bath, grinning as he looked around.

“How about we plant some trees and stack some stones to make it look like a real hot spring?”

“Dad, that’s your occupational habit talking.”

I joked, but I had to admit it would look much nicer if we decorated it as he suggested.

Soon, my mother, Seon-ah, Ara, and Gomgom joined us in the hot spring. Frey, observing cautiously, eventually approached Ara and Gomgom to join them.

“It’s like a perfect picture.”

Seon-ah watched the scene with a smile.

A bit too transparent with your intentions, little sister.

As we enjoyed the hot spring, my father mumbled.

“If I’d known, I would have brought some beer.”

“Drinking while in a hot spring is dangerous.”

“Even so…”

Alcohol, huh?

Speaking of which, I wondered how Young-seong was doing with the alcohol-related project I had entrusted him with. I hoped it was going well.

* * *

Young-seong was currently in Japan.

Specifically, he was at Junichi Ino’s brewery.

“This is the first batch.”

“Ooh.”

When Choi Young-seong poured out the sweet potatoes Kyu-seong had given him, Junichi was impressed.

“…It’s a bit of a shame to use these delicious sweet potatoes for alcohol-making experiments.”

Junichi said, licking his lips.

“But aren’t you curious? What will sweet potato liquor taste like?”

“As you know, the key to making good alcohol is not just the raw ingredients but how they taste when made into spirits.”

“That’s true. We’ll have to try making spirits and see how it turns out. If it’s not good, I’ll have to report back to Kyu-seong. But this is just the beginning.”

“Just the beginning? What do you mean?”

“Kyu-seong can cultivate many crops. Sweet potatoes are just one of them.”

“Hmm! So, even if sweet potatoes fail, there are other options to try.”

“Exactly. And for some reason, I have a good feeling about this. I think the liquor made from these sweet potatoes will be a success.”

Junichi nodded at Young-seong’s words.

“I agree.”

“Alright, let’s get started.”

The project, which could become a storm in the alcohol industry, was taking its first step.

Palace 10

Prev | TOC I Next

To meet the expectations of the Emperor who appointed him as the Tax Inspector, Ian was contemplating two things.

One was to create a system where real-time status could be monitored, something that would be irresistible to the final decision-maker.

The other was to eliminate the subordinates of Duke Blake planted within the Tax Office.

‘I need to visit the field first.’

The field often provided magical answers.

As Ian was preparing for a surprise visit to the Tax Office, Tom approached with a letter.

“Your Highness, a letter has arrived for you.”

“Who sent it?”

Tom shook his head at Ian’s natural question.

“You received a similar letter in the past, Your Highness. But you never told me who the sender was.”

“Then who handed this letter to you?”

“A servant in charge of daily necessities delivered it.”

The servant responsible for daily necessities likely had connections to the person who sent the letter.

Ian realized that the letter came regularly.

The peculiar thing was the rose seal on the letter.

“Did the previous letter also have this rose seal?”

“Yes, Your Highness, the previous letter had the same rose seal.”

‘A rose seal… I don’t recall anything specific.’

“Bring the Detector.”

Thinking there might be some strange magic, Ian used the Detector to examine the letter’s contents. There was nothing suspicious, only paper inside.

Confirming this, Ian opened the envelope and read the letter inside.

[To Brother Ian,

I wonder if you used the scented candles I sent last time well. I’ve obtained even more exquisite scented candles this time. If it’s alright with you, I’ll wait for you at the ‘Rose Inn’ tomorrow night, as usual. I’ll prepare various things for you to enjoy along with the scented candles. I always strive to avoid disappointing you.

From A]

After reading the letter, Ian was quite taken aback. The letter contained information not present in the original work.

Someone calling him “brother,” scented candles, and the Rose Inn were all unfamiliar.

Ian decided to ask Tom about the letter’s content, despite knowing he might not get all the answers. Some information was better than none.

“Tom, have I received scented candles from outside before?”

At the mention of scented candles, Tom looked troubled.

Seeing Tom hesitating, Ian spoke firmly.

“Answer first.”

Seemingly used to hearing this phrase, Tom answered.

“Your Highness, you have occasionally brought scented candles from outside, but none are left now. However, after using them, you remained in a dazed state until the next morning, unresponsive even when I called.”

From Tom’s explanation, Ian quickly deduced the purpose of the ‘scented candles.’

They were likely drugs similar to opium or heroin. Drugs had always been the easiest way to control someone.

‘Alcohol, women, and even drugs…’

Thinking about the misdeeds of the original Ian, Ian shook his head. Although Kyle might have executed Ian for being a ‘delinquent,’ it was more likely the drugs that led to his downfall.

“Do you know about the Rose Inn?”

“Rose Inn…”

After pondering for a moment, Tom remembered something and spoke.

“I believe there is a place called Rose Inn near the capital’s red-light district. To confirm if it’s the same inn as in the letter, we might need to check if they use the same seal. But as far as I know, there’s only one Rose Inn.”

Ian pondered Tom’s words. The appointment mentioned in the letter was for ‘tomorrow night.’

Although he felt uneasy about going to an unfamiliar place, the suspicious nature of the letter piqued his curiosity. It seemed like a good opportunity to counter the noble faction.

‘Well, I’ve already received a reliable insurance from the Emperor, so my personal safety should be less of a concern.’

Deciding to meet ‘A’ the next night, Ian casually asked Tom.

“Tom, I need to leave the palace tomorrow night.”

“What?”

Tom, thinking he had misheard, asked Ian to repeat himself.

“I said, I need to leave the palace tomorrow night.”

“Your Highness, it’s dangerous to leave the palace alone at night. Please reconsider.”

“Who said I’d go alone?”

“With whom will you go?”

At Tom’s question, Ian looked around slowly, and a shadow in the darkness flinched momentarily.

“Don’t worry, Tom. Do you think I’d move without a plan?”

Although Tom had come to trust the changed Ian recently, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Ian, who used to live recklessly without any plans, was now getting involved in even more dangerous matters.

Turning his gaze away from Tom, Ian spoke.

“Tom, haven’t I mentioned going out before?”

After thinking for a while, Tom nodded.

“And you must have helped me go out back then too, right?”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Tom felt a mix of satisfaction with his job, seeing his master getting smarter, and unease as Ian seemed to get into more dangerous situations recently.

“Then help me get out tomorrow night too.”

Seeing Ian’s sincere smile, Tom had no choice but to nod. What could a servant do against the orders of a prince?

***

After finishing the preliminary investigation with Tom about the Rose Inn, Ian headed to the Tax Office.

The Tax Office, the place managing the Empire’s taxes.

A place where a lot of money moved, and consequently, many flies were likely to be swarming around.

In the Strategy Planning Team, the most frequent subject of inter-departmental wars was always the ‘budget.’

And where there was a large budget, there were always issues with ‘corporate card usage.’

Meanwhile, the Tax Office was in chaos due to the sudden visit from the Third Prince. Sweating profusely, Viscount Steel, who was in charge of the Tax Office, greeted Ian.

“Your Highness, what brings you to the Tax Office without any prior notice?”

“Isn’t the role of an inspector to arrive unannounced?”

Hearing an answer so different from what he expected, Steel’s back grew damp with sweat.

Inspections were usually a rigged game. The departments and the inspection teams would coordinate to minimize losses for both sides.

Seeing Ian continually blocking his way, Steel introduced himself nervously.

“Y-Your Highness, I apologize for the late introduction. I am Viscount Steel, overseeing the Tax Office’s operations.”

“Viscount Steel.”

While one shouldn’t judge a person by their name, Steel already seemed suspicious.

To identify the source of the stench, Ian needed to get closer to the person.

With a smile, Ian spoke to Steel.

“I thought you were just a regular employee, but you’re the Tax Director. That means you can grant my requests.”

“What requests do you mean?”

“I’d like to see all the tax records for the capital for this quarter.”

Steel, thinking Ian was clueless about the operations of the Tax Office, spoke calmly.

“Your Highness, can you tell me why you want to see the tax records for this quarter? The volume of these documents is enormous, and I’m worried it might be a waste of your time.”

“A waste of time… Isn’t inspection about thoroughly reviewing such documents?”

Steel, seeing Ian’s determination to work rigidly, spoke with a subtle, snake-like tone.

“If you tell me what you specifically want to see, I’ll do my best to assist you. I’m worried about wasting the valuable time of the Empire’s little sun.”

Hearing Steel’s words, Ian’s smile vanished, and he spoke in a lowered voice.

“You have a long tongue, Viscount. Don’t you know why I’m here?”

“What do you mean, Your Highness?”

“I’m here to conduct a genuine inspection, not to negotiate with you.”

Seeing Ian’s red eyes, Steel realized he might have made a mistake. Despite boasting in front of Duke Blake and Earl Liam, facing Ian directly made a sense of foreboding creep into his chest.

“Viscount, if you remain idle, I might have to review all periods’ records, not just this quarter.”

Hearing Ian’s subtle warning, Steel answered in a disciplined manner.

“No, Your Highness! Leave it to me.”

With a loud voice, Steel ordered the Tax Office staff to bring the tax records for the quarter.

“Viscount Steel, stay by my side.”

Steel’s heart sank at Ian’s meticulousness, preventing him from issuing further orders.

‘Could the rumor about the Third Prince changing be true?’

Sweating profusely, Steel’s back was drenched. His sweat-soaked shirt was dripping onto the floor due to his tension.

“And I’ll be conducting one-on-one interviews with the Tax Office staff. If you do anything unnecessary and the inspection results are compromised, you will bear all the responsibility.”

Steel could only nod at Ian’s warning. Who would dare think of Ian as the ’15-year-old delinquent prince’ seeing his strict demeanor?

Seeing Steel’s disciplined stance, Ian threw him a bait to uncover the stench.

“Viscount Steel, you seem very nervous. Is something bothering you?”

“No, Your Highness. It’s just that it’s my first time conversing with you, so I’m a bit nervous.”

“Shouldn’t the person managing the Empire’s taxes have a stronger constitution?”

“Tax work naturally involves a lot of tension, doesn’t it?”

“That’s true. Maybe you’re the perfect person for the job.”

Feeling a bit relieved by Ian’s sudden praise, Steel eased up.

Then Ian’s following words made Steel feel even more at ease.

“Now that no one else is here, can you tell me? Didn’t you prepare something special?”

Seeing Ian confidently extending his hand, Steel was convinced.

‘The Third Prince is indeed a delinquent.’

Survival 131

The privileges held by those in a different class are immense.

From the freedom of wearing uniforms to the quality of food and dormitories.

In a place where living conditions depend on academic performance, it was natural for students to be obsessed with it.

One of the privileges of Class A is the freedom to use the training grounds, which other students can only access by making a reservation.

Even now, returning late from a dispatched lesson when the use of the training grounds is restricted, this privilege applied.

While other students could only suck their fingers due to curfew, we could freely open the well-prepared training grounds.

“It’s deserted because there’s no one here. It’s perfect for clashing swords.”

Theodore Treja.

The nickname “Sword Saint” was given to his daughter, Luciana.

Though the lower title of “Sword King” was also taken by the crown prince.

“Show me your skills, friend.”

His fighting spirit was not inferior to either of them.

Hence, he was called a Sword Hero, a nickname given to the tragic genius who could not become either a Sword Saint or a Sword King.

In the game, Theodore was not particularly fond of this, but that’s beside the point.

‘I have to fight someone like that now, huh?’

Calming my slight nervousness, I stared at him as he confidently smiled.

Even though I managed to elevate my abilities through various means, Hans Byron’s body was originally a talentless, useless entity.

However, as with short and long things, you can’t tell until you measure.

I had also built up a considerable amount.

Srrrng-

“Though my connection with Lord Treja is short and my qualifications are lacking, I will do my best in this match.”

My cherished blade, with a clear blue steel color, contrasted with his dark, ominous one.

But then.

“Hoo. At first glance, it’s an exceptional sword.”

Though his words were praise, his expression held the opposite emotion.

Furthermore, he did not hide it.

“…It seems I’ve been underestimated. I must have lacked in my training. I didn’t expect to be looked down upon by my sparring partner.”

“Haha, did you notice? As expected, you’re very perceptive. That’s why you’re serving Lady Speda, after all.”

The formalities lasted only for a moment.

He resumed speaking with the fierce air of a warrior.

“But seriously, Byron, a dagger? Is that your main weapon?”

“Yes, it is.”

“A dagger… It’s a good weapon, but only as a secondary one.”

The question in Theodore’s sharp eyes was clear.

Is a dagger really your best choice?

I understood why he was reacting that way.

The East had a culture that seemed to transplant martial arts directly into fantasy.

For someone like Theodore Treja, who was born and raised there, a dagger was merely a secondary weapon for emergencies or a tool for crafting leather.

As if to demonstrate this, Theodore Treja, wearing a mask of exuberance, offered advice.

“In every military book from the East, it always says that the spear is the king of all weapons. Do you know why they say that?”

“Is it because of its reach?”

“You understand very well.”

Reach.

The range where one could attack the enemy while ensuring their own safety.

The longer it is, the more advantageous it is.

In the first place, isn’t a battle between a mage and a warrior decided by whether the distance is closed or not?

The same logic applied here.

Among weapons, the spear with the longest reach is the king of all weapons.

The dagger with the shortest reach is the weakest.

Such a plausible piece of advice.

Hah, look at this guy. Who’s he lecturing?

If provoking was his goal, he achieved it splendidly.

Disturbing an opponent’s composure is part of battle strategy.

But there was something that arrogant Theodore Treja overlooked.

Even setting aside the assaults I faced as Frost Mane and with the Kerzo Cult.

I am the one who officially defeated Luciana Speda, the Sword Expert.

“Haha. That’s an interesting theory. But there are truths in this world that cannot be found in military texts.”

Moreover, no one could match me in provoking an opponent with words.

“According to Lord Treja’s logic, a dagger can never beat a spear. Yet, we often see exceptions to this.”

“Exceptions?”

“For example, there’s the bow. Or more commonly here, where most members are nobles, magic.”

The spear? It does have the longest reach among weapons.

But what about the bow, which has a longer range?

Or even more so, magic, whose range is immeasurable?

“Do you believe that having a longer range means it’s impossible to defeat an archer or a mage?”

…Huh.

Theodore Treja let out a dry laugh, at a loss for words.

Generally, having a longer range is advantageous in battle.

That’s nonsense.

A spear has a long shaft, making its preparatory movements long.

A bow needs to be loaded with an arrow.

Magic, compared to aura, is less effective in close combat and has lower output.

Every weapon has its strengths and weaknesses.

The same goes for the dagger.

As he pointed out, it has range issues, but its destructive power and potential for creating unexpected situations in close combat are immense.

I smiled broadly at him, adding a clearly proven “truth” to my own ‘advice’.

“If you only focus on the disadvantages like that, how can you develop an eye for assessing the battlefield? Step away from books and gain more experience in actual combat.”

A mockery disguised as advice.

Seeing Theodore’s face deteriorate in real-time was a sight to behold!

The face of a handsome man full of exuberant spirit wilted like a pickle left to rot for months.

“Kuh, hahaha! Well, I gave you unnecessary advice! If you’re ranked third in the entrance exam, you’re a better warrior than I am!”

“Additionally, I have a record of defeating Lady Luciana, whom Lord Treja has never bested.”

But stopping here would be unworthy of the nickname Frostmane.

I maintained decorum, yet still cut down his pride as much as possible.

The result was…

“As much as your eloquence is excellent, I hope your swordsmanship is too!”

Though he tried to mask it as a spar, his hurried steps forward proved otherwise.

That guy was truly pissed off.

‘Why poke at someone who’s just standing still?’

When the guilty party gets angry, how astonished must the innocent bystander be?

Just as the sages pointed out about impudence.

Instead of reflection, Theodore Treja chose to attack.

– Clang!

The black dagger and the steel phantom sword clashed.

“Hahaha! For all that big talk, your strength is rather disappointing.”

“Unfortunately, strength and aura are not my specialties.”

As expected of a main character candidate, his strength was immense.

However,

“It’s not so weak that I can’t endure it.”

As I slightly lifted the corner of my mouth, a crack appeared on Theodore Treja’s smooth forehead.

While passion and competitive spirit are excellent fuels for growth, they can sometimes dry out one’s rationality.

He pushed forward, swinging his sword again.

I narrowly retreated, kicking off the ground.

‘Hmm, not bad.’

Even in his heated state, his fluid movements and light steps were commendable.

But his limits were clear.

In terms of speed, Luciana was more troublesome, and in terms of power, demons like Iskadel and Lexton were more daunting.

Though he shouted with determination and swung his sword with all his might, he was still lacking.

His attacks were easy to dodge and parry.

He was the perfect training dummy for me.

‘Is this all he has?’

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed.

It was the same when I faced the crown prince and now as well.

Their abilities were far below my expectations.

I could handle them without using my strengths in evasion and counterattack.

Maybe I overestimated them, having seen their grown-up versions in the game.

I sighed, dodging his sword strike, and whispered in his ear.

“Passion is good, but don’t get fixated on immediate moves.”

He glared at me with a flushed face.

“In this losing position, you have the nerve to lecture me?!”

“That may be so, but…”

“There’s nowhere left for you to run! I’ll finish this!”

He abandoned his formal tone and swung his sword.

The diagonal slash intended to cut through my dagger and reach my body.

‘He’s blinded by arrogance and humiliation.’

I clicked my tongue and corrected my stance.

It was true that I had been retreating the entire match due to my lack of strength.

However, the battlefield is not something that can be decided by a momentary advantage.

Especially with someone who recklessly charges forward like this, it’s much easier to turn the tide.

‘Clashing head-on like before is impossible.’

Considering the gap between us and the reinforcement from the drop.

Taking his attack head-on would mean my defeat.

In that case, I just needed to deflect it.

Moreover,

‘To prepare him for the unpredictable enemies he will face in the future, a bit of a lesson wouldn’t hurt.’

I abandoned the idea of parrying with my sword and took a step forward.

A reckless charge, ignoring defense.

An outrageous attempt only possible with a dagger made Theodor widen his eyes.

“Huh! Are you willing to take an injury! Fine, such passion! I’ll meet you… no?!”

His sword sliced across my chest.

No.

It cut through the shell covering my chest.

[Activating Stone Skin]

[You have deflected Theodor Treja’s sword attack.]

‘The Gargoyle trait is really useful in fights between real warriors.’

Seeing his dismayed face, I swung my leg.

“Ugh!”

“Stop whining. How painful can it be to get kicked by me?”

Seriously, whether it’s the crown prince or the main character candidates, what on earth did they eat to grow like this?

‘It hurts like hell… these monsters.’

Even though I hit his vulnerable body precisely, I felt more pain in my foot than he did in his abdomen.

Trying not to show it, I gave him a sly smile.

“However, you must know yourself. If I had used my dagger a moment ago, I would have won.”

“…Kuh!”

His hand holding the sword trembled.

His eyebrows furrowed, and his lips were tightly clenched.

Clearly, his competitive spirit made him resent his defeat deeply.

Considering how much he prided himself on his knowledge of weapons, this lesson must sting even more.

And so, it was a face I rather liked.

If I were to describe it doppelganger-style, it was like a bag of essential mixed nuts.

Theodore’s frustrated expression was sweet, salty, and even savory the more I savored it.

‘…Oops! This isn’t the time for that.’

Was I really basking in the satisfaction of landing a good hit?

The fact that the main character candidate I had to face calamity with was subpar was alarming in another sense.

Facing calamity alone is absolutely impossible.

In the end, I had to nurture these individuals with the greatest potential in this world.

Like it or not, they were my teammates.

“…I’ve learned something. As expected of the third place in the entrance exam. I haven’t felt this kind of wall since Luciana.”

A wall, you say?

To me, it seemed more like a wall made of wax.

Honestly, my current specs aren’t that great.

Didn’t I just hurt myself by kicking Theodore?

To be frank, if he had responded a bit more calmly, I would have struggled quite a bit.

“Lord Treja, do you remember what I said?”

“You said not to fixate on immediate moves.”

“Exactly.”

Just now too.

It’s usually the disadvantaged side that throws a gambit.

Theodore, who was in a favorable position, had no obligation to accept it.

Well, that’s that.

It’s a habit typical of an aggressive warrior.

The problem is what comes next.

“Before getting caught up in the opponent’s moves, you need to think about your next move. At the very least, to prepare for it.”

He showed no such movement at all.

He just relied on his reckless charge, only to helplessly accept defeat.

“The next move, huh.”

“No matter how the opponent neutralizes your attack, you must always consider your next move. Whether you abandon your sword and retreat or engage in a physical struggle with a broken stance.”

In fact, either way, there’s a loss.

It’s just about preventing a complete defeat.

‘In any case, he needs to abandon that reckless aggression.’

Well, I’ve given him something to think about.

Whether he takes my advice seriously and grows from it, or lets it go in one ear and out the other and falls behind, is entirely up to him.

I watched him silently with his mouth firmly closed.

“Thanks to my dear friend today, I’ve learned a valuable lesson.”

Fortunately, he proved himself to be a main character candidate.

He sheathed his sword, bowed respectfully, and then stepped forward to shake my hand.

“May I request another sparring match in the future?”

“I would welcome that.”

“Haha! You take it so well. Just watch, next time I’ll defeat you, Hans.”

‘Hans?’

Not Byron, but Hans.

After just one match, Theodor changed the way he addressed me.

‘Come to think of it, he did that in the game too.’

In private, he always called those he considered friends by their names without hesitation.

Even during the northern dispatch, if he hadn’t been an outsider, he would have called Luciana and Camilla by their names.

Now, I was also within that ‘friend’ category.

[The perception of the Treja Ducal House has changed]

[Neutral -> Interested]

Along with his change in attitude, the status window confirmed it.

As I wiped off my sweat with a towel from the training ground and reorganized myself, Theodore approached.

“Hans, since you’ve given me such valuable lessons, let me treat you. How about a drink?”

“I must decline. I have to attend to Lady Luciana afterward.”

“Huh, that’s unfortunate. When will you be available next?”

Seeing Theodore, I could understand how Camilla felt about him in the north.

‘This guy, trying to casually put his arm around my shoulder.’

It was quite bothersome to fend off his attempts to drape his arm over my shoulder.

Sorry, but I draw the line at men.

The only person who can touch my shoulder is Luciana.

“Well, if not a drink, then at least let me treat you to a meal. Please, let me repay the debt I owe you!”

“That’s…”

“Great! I know a fantastic restaurant on the academy’s main street. Follow me!”

What a bothersome hot-blooded guy.

Shaking my head, I followed him.

‘No need to refuse a free meal.’

Lately, I’ve been spending a lot on gathering information, leaving my pockets empty.

A nice meal on the young duke’s tab doesn’t sound bad.

***

However, that meal never happened.

“Are you Sir Hans Byron?”

As we stepped into the marketplace, a sturdy man approached us and blocked our path.

A uniform adorned with elaborate golden embroidery.

A blue tassel symbolizing the imperial family’s hair on his chest.

There was no need to ask.

Nodding to the summons of this high-ranking guard, I replied.

“Yes, but what is this about?”

“His Highness, the Third Prince is looking for you. Could you come with me?”

Stunned by an unexpected summons, I could only blink in surprise.

Act 124

Somehow, I persuaded ‘Sombra’ and received the Moonlight Sword, looking at it with an incredulous expression.

‘A storage ability for items, huh.’

It could be considered quite effective.

Now, I could carry ‘holy relics’ or ‘Soul Stones’ that I couldn’t usually carry around.

‘Oh, maybe not Soul Stones?’

Judging by Sombra’s current behavior, there’s a risk it might consume the Soul Stone just by storing them.

I guess I’ll have to exclude Soul Stones.

Blink. Blink.

Noticing something strange, several eyes simultaneously looked at me.

It might have been grotesque, but somehow, either because I adapted quickly or because of my bizarre sense of aesthetics, I found it kind of cute.

[⇒ You can increase intimacy by naming <Sombra>.]

At that moment, a system notification popped up.

A name?

Come to think of it, ‘Sombra’ is its name as a demon.

Although its current form isn’t exactly non-demonic, since we’ve become one and gained new abilities, giving it a new name wouldn’t be bad.

It felt like naming a pet.

“What would you like?”

At my question about choosing a name, Sombra stared at me intently, then shifted its gaze to the name tag on the pot it was sitting on.

“Angelica…”

A name that I miss but need to forget now.

If I keep dwelling on the memories with her, the other children might get jealous.

“Do you like this name?”

As I tried to pass that name to Sombra as a sign of complete farewell, it hugged the name tag tightly, seemingly pleased.

“Then, from now on, ‘Angelica’ is your name.”

[You have given <Sombra> a new name, ‘Angelica.’]

[You can now use <Sombra / Erosion Corridor>.]

***

After naming Sombra ‘Angelica,’ I returned to the duties of the ‘Closed Eye’ and began to feel uneasy.

‘Aiden is dead, and it’s quiet.’

Too quiet.

While it’s a well-known fact that the royal family shows little interest in the nobility’s actions or life and death, it was unexpected that even the ‘Dawn Society’ remained inactive.

The deceased wasn’t just an ordinary member or of monsignor rank but a ‘bishop.’

I had prepared to respond, expecting some movement, so this silence was disconcerting.

Knock, knock.

Just as I felt the unease, there was a knock at the door.

When I told them to enter, a familiar face stepped into the office.

“It seems you have urgent business if you’ve come all the way here.”

It was Eleanor, marked by her charming tear mole.

Though she had come here in her ‘Diana’ guise, it was clear she was here for Dawn Society business.

The connection between ‘Diana’ and ‘Julian’ wasn’t strong enough for her to visit the ‘Closed Eye’s’ office.

“It’s not that urgent. By the way.”

Clack.

As the door closed, Eleanor’s expression turned to her usual cynical one.

“Isn’t it too easy to reach the office of the so-called leader of the ‘Closed Eye’?”

“Hmm.”

I let out a short sigh at Eleanor’s words.

Where should I start correcting her?

“I am not the leader of the ‘Closed Eye.’ The leader here is Odwin Valadir.”

“I didn’t say that because I didn’t know, but doesn’t Odwin’s position hold little meaning to you?”

She easily uttered words that would have hurt Odwin if she were here.

“Of course not. Odwin is performing her duties well in her own right.”

Eleanor shrugged at my words and began fiddling with her earring.

‘It’s probably a magic tool.’

She was likely checking to see if anyone was eavesdropping on our conversation.

They say those who have experienced it know best. Korund and Aiden’s downfall due to eavesdropping magic must have left her uneasy.

“So, what brings you here?”

Regardless, if the ‘Archbishop’ Eleanor came personally, it must be significant.

It likely concerns Aiden…

“The Grand Archbishop has invited you to a meal.”

What? Tenellon and me?

And Eleanor, an Archbishop, came personally to relay this?

“It certainly won’t be an ordinary meal. The topic of Sir Aiden will undoubtedly come up.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, not many people seem to know yet, but it’s clear that Sir Julian, you were involved in Sir Aiden’s final moments.”

Watching her continue to speak, I shrugged my shoulders.

I thought it better to show such a reaction than to affirm her statement.

I did do it, but technically it was the ‘Black Knight.’

“And… Sir Julian, I trust you. There’s something I want to say.”

What do you want to say now?

You’re not about to invite me to dinner too, are you?

“I think we need to bring down the Grand Archbishop.”

Hmm.

Eleanor’s shocking statement nearly took my breath away.

Fortunately, this sly villain isn’t one to let his emotions show easily.

The traits of ‘calmness’ and ‘poker face’ support this.

But why say that to me?

I had thought of eliminating Tenellon, but I hadn’t revealed it or shown any inclination to do so.

Besides,

‘She’s surprisingly naive.’

Seeing her utter such words so casually, it seems Eleanor trusts me quite a lot.

If it were me, I wouldn’t reveal such intentions to anyone.

If I did, I would involve others as accomplices, and if they showed signs of dissent, right there…

‘This is going too far.’

I shook my head, feeling my thoughts becoming too ‘Julian-like.’

Clearing my throat to shift the mood, I turned my gaze to Eleanor.

“So, you’re thinking of rebellion?”

“Rebellion…”

Eleanor bit her lip slightly.

“It’s not rebellion; it’s to restore the Dawn Society to its original state.”

We call that ‘rebellion.’

“Moreover, Tenellon’s actions are vastly different from before.”

Different? I haven’t seen what Tenellon’s been up to lately, so I wouldn’t know.

“He’s gone mad, to put it mildly.”

What on earth did she see to say something so extreme?

“I used to think his obsession with something led him to make wise decisions. But now, it’s not the case.”

“What exactly do you mean by wise decisions?”

“Well, for one thing, he wouldn’t kill or banish bishops based on his own arbitrary standards.”

Killing bishops based on his own standards.

That somehow strikes a chord.

“Oh, Sir Julian, I don’t mean you. Recently, Tenellon has been making excessive demands on the members under the guise of ‘loyalty.'”

“Excessive demands… you say?”

“Impossible tasks, wealth, and even their children.”

As Eleanor continued, her face grew increasingly stiff.

“If these acts of testing the ‘loyalty’ of members continue, the foundation of the Dawn Society might crumble.”

Indeed, harming nobles under the guise of ‘loyalty’ could undermine the very basis of the Dawn Society. They gathered for power and relations with other nobles, not to risk their lives for extreme actions.

‘But Tenellon is doing that?’

Outwardly, he pretends to be bold, but he’s actually a coward who doesn’t take excessive risks. This made it difficult for ‘Sword Saint’ Hayden Reich to gather evidence, allowing him to quietly expand his power and eventually become the ‘Demon Lord,’ summoning the ‘Demon God.’

‘That’s why I joined the Dawn Society in the first place, to stop him in advance.’

Listening to Eleanor now, it seems like the royal family will handle it if left alone.

The Empire’s royalty is known for eliminating any noticeable threats.

“I understand your point, Miss Eleanor.”

In that regard, my position is difficult. If the Dawn Society comes to light, I, as a bishop, could also be in danger.

“The Archbishop wouldn’t lie, so it’s only a matter of time before the Dawn Society faces close scrutiny from the royal family.”

“Indeed.”

It is right to excise festering wounds. It’s a sizable part, but now is the time for extraction.

“As Miss Eleanor said, it seems the time has come.”

I chuckled briefly and looked at Eleanor.

“I see now. Miss Eleanor, you are moving for your own selfish reasons.”

“Huh?”

“You claim it’s for the Dawn Society, but isn’t it because you covet the Grand Archbishop’s position? That’s why you want to bring him down.”

Indeed, dealing with ‘Tenellon’ is the right thing, but the one who stands to gain the most from his death is Eleanor.

If the Archbishop’s position is vacated, Eleanor, as an Archbishop, will surely take that seat.

Hearing my thoughts, Eleanor looked slightly flustered.

“I merely stated that the time has come, Sir Julian, but it was you who were orchestrating things.”

Me, orchestrating things?

Eleanor, regaining her composure, continued.

“It’s Pintel who’s been gathering people and planning things beneath the surface. He said… he was acting on your orders.”

Ah… Pintel.

Hearing that name, I began to feel a bit dizzy.

I told him to stay put.

***

Even if something is brewing beneath the surface, for now, I must play along with the Grand Archbishop’s words.

In the end, I accepted Tenellon’s invitation to dinner.

He wouldn’t think highly of me if I refused.

“But… is this the place?”

The place Tenellon invited me to was one of the most renowned restaurants in the capital.

A place always crowded with guests, where even nobles, unless they are royalty, must make a reservation. It’s a place that stubbornly adheres to its own strict rules.

In a way, it’s akin to a place armed with the craftsmanship similar to ‘Dusk Flame.’

Such a place.

“Did Tenellon book it exclusively for himself?”

The amount of influence he has is staggering.

As I entered the restaurant, I saw Tenellon seated, holding a pre-meal bread.

“Here you are, Julian. Have a seat.”

At Tenellon’s gesture, a man in a sophisticated outfit approached and pulled out a chair for me.

Though his actions resembled those of a waiter, he didn’t seem like an employee. In fact, there were no staff visible in the restaurant.

The man who pulled out the chair seemed to be the owner of the restaurant.

“The soup and the pre-meal bread here are always excellent. I’m not exactly versed in the lifestyle of the noble elite, but I can say this much.”

As Tenellon praised the food, the noble attending him twisted his body in humble flattery.

Then, without even glancing at me, Tenellon tore a piece of the pre-meal bread with his hands, not eating it, and casually spoke.

“Did you kill Aiden?”

The straightforward question made cold sweat trickle down my back.

Just in case anything happened, I had brought along the ‘Bell of Justice’ inside Sombra, no, ‘Angelica.’

“He’s dead.”

“I see, in a way, it’s justified.”

After the simple meal, the main course served was a lamb steak.

Though the delicious smell tantalized my senses, I had no appetite.

“In fact, I was also contemplating Aiden’s fate.”

“Is that so?”

“While it’s good to conduct research on demons, I thought he had crossed the line.”

“Yet, despite that, didn’t you quite respect his actions?”

Tenellon gave a slight smile.

“After all, he was a bishop. I had to show some respect, didn’t I?”

Though he continued to speak as if he were kind, Tenellon’s emotions felt hollow.

Reflecting on Eleanor’s words and Tenellon’s usual behavior, it seemed something had indeed changed.

‘He has become strange… hm?’

While pondering the reason, I sensed that the ‘magic’ surrounding Tenellon had grown murky.

Something must have happened to him.

Realizing this, I quickly deduced the cause.

A story from “Let’s Kill the Demon Lord.”

It was an incident caused by the whims of the ‘Demon God.’

“Sir Tenellon, by any chance… have you stopped hearing the ‘voice’?”

Tenellon, who was reaching for his steak, paused and turned his gaze towards me.

“Julian, how do you know about that?”

Whoosh-!

Plop!

The float made a cute sound as it hit the surface of the lake.

The red fluorescent float sank quietly, finding its place.

“Heehee!”

“Come here!”

While I was preparing my fishing gear next to my father, I saw Ara and Seon-ah playing tag on the grassy field.

Gomgom was chasing them around, not knowing what they were doing.

“This is nice.”

“Except for the noise.”

“Haha. There’s nothing better than the sound of children laughing. Wait until you’re my age.”

“I like hearing Ara’s laughter too.”

“Don’t be too hard on your sister.”

Soon, I finished preparing my gear and cast my fishing rod into the lake.

Plop!

With the sound of the sinker dropping, the float slowly entered the water. Meanwhile, my father’s float began to move slightly, as if something was nibbling at the bait.

“You’re already getting a bite.”

“Yes. I was a bit worried, but fortunately, it’s biting.”

Considering that this wasn’t Earth’s environment, I wondered if the fish would take to the usual bait, but it seemed my worries were unfounded.

Soon, my father’s float sprang up high.

“Got it!”

As he swiftly pulled the fishing rod, the surface of the lake splashed, starting a battle of strength.

“It looks like a big catch.”

“Hm!”

My father raised his hand, gripping the fishing rod with a tense look. Despite thinking the fish would be caught quickly, it turned out to be quite a fighter.

“Did you catch it? Did you catch it?!”

Ara, who had stopped playing tag and approached my father, stared at the splashing lake surface with bright, curious eyes.

Wanting to show a good performance to his expectant granddaughter, my father gathered his strength again.

“Ugh-cha.”

“Ara, here’s the net.”

I watched from the side and handed the net to Ara as the fish finally started to show itself. The fish was bigger than expected, so the net was essential.

Ara, with a serious expression, received the net and carefully extended her arm. Finally, the fish slipped into the net.

“Got it!”

Ara’s face lit up as she pulled the fish out of the water. The fish still flopped energetically, dancing as if in protest.

“Wow! It’s a big one. The feel was perfect. Haha!”

My father examined the caught fish with a satisfied look.

Then, he patted Ara’s head, who was watching with excitement.

“Thanks to Ara, we caught it. I couldn’t have managed such a big one alone.”

“Hehe.”

Ara smiled brightly and then looked at me.

“Can we eat it?”

“Let’s grill it.”

Unlike the fish Ara caught when we visited with Young-seong, this one was a different species. It was bigger than the fish caught back then.

At that moment, my mother, who was watching with Bokkeum in her arms near the tent, spoke up.

“We need to light a fire. Is that a fire?”

“Yes. I’ll light it, just a moment.”

I prepared the frying pan and cooking utensils.

Meanwhile, Ara and my father were taking pictures with the fish.

“Great. Our Ara is brave.”

“Wow! It’s big!”

Ara proudly held up the fish, while my father and Seon-ah took pictures non-stop. My father focused on the fish, while Seon-ah focused on Ara, each with their own details.

“Mom, you can rest. I’ll handle it.”

“Can you do it?”

“I can grill a fish.”

I had been living on my own for a few years.

But in my parents’ eyes, I still seemed like a child.

“Hmmm…”

“It’s okay, just relax.”

Ignoring my mother’s doubtful gaze, I continued preparing.

‘Just grilling the fish seems a bit plain.’

I roughly pulled out the ingredients I had prepared beforehand.

Ember grill, and tomatoes.

This should be enough for the fish.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure if tomatoes would go well with it, but I thought of it spontaneously.

I also took out the salad I had saved from earlier. By the way, I had never told anyone about the benefits of the cucumbers in the salad.

‘…It could be dangerous.’

It’s an officially certified skincare food product by the system.

The moment this fact becomes known, there’s bound to be a commotion.

Better be cautious.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong !”

Ara came running to me, holding a fish as big as her face. Meanwhile, my fishing rod seemed to have gotten a signal, as my father quickly grabbed it.

“Nice!”

He was completely absorbed in the fishing.

“I’ll call you when the food’s ready. Ara, you can go play.”

“Okay!”

Ara answered brightly and started to go back, but then she turned around and came back to me.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong .”

“Hm?”

“I want to fish too.”

“Oh! Ara can do it too. Ask Dad to teach you.”

“Okay!”

I watched Ara’s excited footsteps as she ran to my father, and then I started to prepare the fish.

-Grr.

“Gomgom, you’re here?”

Gomgom approached me, sniffing the fish. As expected of a bear, he seemed to like fish. I remembered seeing bears hunting salmon in documentaries, so the thought came to mind.

-Grr?

“Gomgom, are you curious about this?”

Seeing his curious face, it seemed like it was his first time seeing a fish. Given his small size, it was probably dangerous for him to go into the water, so he might not have seen fish before. When we found Gomgom last time, the fish feast was already over.

I finished preparing the fish and stuffed its mouth with tomatoes. Since I had removed all the innards, I put more ember grill and a few tomatoes into the cut.

‘Is this right?’

Well, it shouldn’t fail. The ingredients were so good that even this improvised dish should be delicious. I had seen something like this before and was vaguely following it, though I felt it originally used lemons to remove the fishy smell.

Sizzle-

As soon as the pan heated up, I put the fish on it. Soon, a delicious smell wafted through the air.

“Yes!”

“Wow! Ara caught it! Our Ara caught a fish!”

“Oh, where? Wow, our Ara is amazing. It’s a big one!”

While I was cooking, my parents were excited about Ara’s fishing success. Seon-ah was busy recording a video of the scene.

“Why don’t you enjoy it too?”

“Shh.”

When I said that to Seon-ah, she put her index finger to her lips with a serious face. Well, that’s her way of enjoying it. I decided to just ignore it.

Sizzle!

Soon, the fish was perfectly cooked through. The fragrant aroma of the fish rose, surrounded by the smells of the ember grill and tomatoes.

“Smells good.”

-Roar!

Gomgom drooled as he watched the fish.

Meanwhile, Ara waddled over to me and put something beside me.

Thud!

A heavy sound.

When I glanced to the side, I saw a big fish, almost reaching my waist, lying on the ground.

“It’s a big one!”

Ara put her hands on her hips and puffed out her chest.

I glanced at proud Ara and then back at the fish on the ground.

“…What is this?”

“No way, you caught something like this with a freshwater fishing rod? Doesn’t it usually break?”

“Hehehe! Kyu-seong! This is a real big catch, a big one!”

“The rod didn’t break?”

“I thought it would, but Ara picked up a rock from the ground and hit the fish with it. Then she just pulled up the unconscious fish.”

“……”

Her judgment is impressive.

Thanks to Ara, the fishing rod’s lifespan has been extended. Next time, I should bring a rod specifically for big catches instead of a freshwater one.

By the way, that thing looked really ferocious.

Can we eat this?

“Fish are usually more delicious the uglier and bigger they are.”

As if reading my thoughts, my father licked his lips while looking at the big fish Ara had caught.

“Let’s eat it as sashimi.”

“Sashimi is dangerous. It’s a freshwater fish.”

“That’s true. Unfortunately, we’ll have to save sashimi for another time.”

It might be fine, but it’s safer to cook it. Of course, Ara can digest anything, but we can’t.

-Rooar!

“Yes! It’s edible!”

Near the fish Ara caught, Gomgom was stomping his feet. Ara nodded in approval.

-Rooar!

“Wait. Wait.”

I stopped Gomgom from immediately putting it in his mouth.

Of course, as a bear, he could eat the fish raw, but…

“Let’s drain the blood first.”

I wanted to preserve Gomgom’s image.

I started preparing the fish while everyone else began to eat.

Wait, why do I suddenly feel like there’s so much to do?!

“Brother, can I eat this first?”

“Yeah, go ahead.”

“Ara, do you want to eat with me?”

“Sure!”

Seeing my family so happy made me feel good. I watched them enjoying the fish while I prepared more.

“Yum! This is delicious!”

“The herbal aroma is amazing.”

“The fish is so tasty! The juices are just like meat.”

Watching them enjoy the food made me want to try it too…

At that moment, Ara, smiling widely, ran over with a big piece of fish on her special fork.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! Open up!”

“Ahhh~!”

Thud!

The fish entered my mouth a bit roughly, but I patted Ara’s head without showing it. Ara is the best.

“Mmm!”

It was good. No, it was much better than expected.

Just like Seon-ah said, the juices flowed out like it was meat, and it felt like the fish absorbed the moisture from the tomatoes.

‘Tomatoes weren’t a bad choice after all?’

If it were my mom or Jae-seong, they could have cooked it more elegantly, but this was quite a successful dish.

“This is going to take a while.”

The fish Ara caught was so large that draining the blood took a long time.

Meanwhile, Ara, who had already finished all the fish on her plate, shouted with fire in her eyes.

“I want to eat more fish!”

She held up the fishing rod like a weapon, looking like a warrior going to battle.

“Hehe. How about a contest to see who catches more fish, Ara?”

“Oh! I will win!”

Seeing Ara so excited made everyone smile.

And so, the fishing contest and cooking continued for a while until my tired father finally declared defeat.

“Ara, you beat your grandpa.”

“Oh! I won! I beat the Great Lord!”

-Roar!

Ara raised both arms in a cheer, and beside her, Gomgom mimicked her without knowing why.

“It’s been a while since I overexerted myself out of excitement.”

“The fish were big and biting well, so it was exhausting.”

“Still, I think I’ve experienced enough fishing excitement for a lifetime. I’ll probably get addicted to this feeling and want to come back.”

“Come anytime you want. You’re always welcome to fish here.”

“Then who will earn the money?”

“I will.”

As I spoke confidently, Seon-ah, who was listening, chimed in.

“Dad! Kyu-seong will earn a lot of money. With the Ara Hongryeon Guild, money will practically pour in even if he just sits still.”

“It’s not that extreme, but I do earn enough to support the family, Father.”

“Is that so? Then I might as well benefit from my son.”

Father spoke jokingly, but it was something I had been thinking about for a while.

“Father. You can really retire now if you want.”

“Sure, sure. I’ll think about it.”

“I’m not joking. I’m serious.”

“I’m not joking either. I’m seriously considering it.”

Oh, he wasn’t joking?

“Actually, coming here has changed my perspective. If I can enjoy my retirement in a place like this, it’s worth considering.”

It seems he likes this place even more than I thought.

Of course, it’s a very charming place.

“In that case, we’ll need to build a house first.”

Hmm. A house, a house…

Should I ask the Alfheims for some advice?

“Y-Your Highness… there’s been a serious incident.”

“What, did Viscount Helington die?”

Considering the remote possibility, Ian asked with a serious expression.

“H-How did you know? Your Highness, he was found dead in his cell today…”

“What? Helington is really dead?”

“Yes, Your Highness. They say he hanged himself in his cell.”

“Was there no note or anything?”

“All he told the guard before he died was that everything was his fault.”

“Hmm…”

Hearing the news of Helington’s suicide, Ian turned to Deus, who was working on his research nearby.

“Deus, what do you think?”

“Ian, as you know, it’s most likely someone sending you a warning.”

“Who do you think it is?”

Although Blake’s face flashed through Ian’s mind, he was curious about Deus’s opinion.

“Obviously, it’s Duke Blake. He doesn’t like anyone stepping forward except for the First Prince. Imagine how much he must hate you for making a fool of him.”

“Do you think it’s wise to stop here?”

“Don’t say something you don’t mean. Ian, if we stop now, you know what fate awaits us.”

Ian smiled at Deus’s words.

“I thought you only did research in the Magic Tower, but you seem to know a lot about the power dynamics within the empire.”

“Ian, I’m a genius magic engineer and the disciple of the Master of the Tower. Do you think I wouldn’t know basic information like this?”

“Knowing all this, you chose me. You’re a reckless man.”

“And aren’t reckless men the ones worth walking through hell with? So, give me more exciting projects to work on.”

Ian laughed, seeing Deus’s eyes light up with a manic gleam whenever they discussed plans.

“Don’t worry, we won’t stop here. Even if someone tries to threaten you, I’ll protect you.”

Deus, playing along, put on a scared expression.

“First Prince, I swear I know nothing! All I did was develop what the Third Prince ordered!”

Ian quickly put him in a headlock, pretending to scold him.

“Choke, choke, Ian, let me go!”

Deus tapped Ian’s arm as a sign of surrender.

“It’s just a joke. But seriously, if the First Prince really comes, survival should be the priority, right? We have to live to help you secretly.”

Ian squeezed his head a little more before letting go.

“What’s the status of the other projects besides the Detector?”

Deus’s eyes sparkled.

“Everything is ready to start as soon as we get the mana stones.”

“You only need mana stones?”

Hearing the word mana stones, Deus’s eyes twinkled as he looked at Ian.

“Your Highness, please grant this magic engineer some mana stones.”

“Don’t worry, my foolish engineer, trust in me. Then there will be gold.”

Deus’s eyes sparkled again, and he resumed working on the designs, referring to the ‘Alector’ project plan Ian had given him.

Ian had shared a rough outline of his future plans as the Tax Inspector, so Deus needed to prepare magical engineering items accordingly.

***

Even though it wasn’t winter, the atmosphere in Duke Blake’s meeting room was freezing.

“Earl Liam.”

With the chilling news of Helington’s suicide, Duke Blake’s voice became even icier, making Earl Liam and the other nobles shudder.

“Yes… Your Grace.”

“Do you have anything to say?”

Liam felt the words burning at the back of his throat but couldn’t bring himself to speak. It was his job to manage Helington, who had failed his mission.

“Do you really have nothing to say?”

Blake’s tone suggested he wanted Liam to at least try to explain. Liam could only utter one thing.

“I’m sorry, Your Grace.”

“For what?”

“I apologize for Viscount Helington’s rash actions causing trouble for the First Prince and the nobles present.”

Despite his apology, Duke Blake’s expression remained stern.

“Naeson Liam.”

Calling him by his full name instead of his title, Blake made Liam swallow hard.

“Yes, Your Grace.”

“There will be no second chance.”

“Thank you, Your Grace!”

Blake’s declaration that the matter would be covered up made Liam breathe a sigh of relief.

After reprimanding Liam, Duke Blake looked around at the other nobles.

“What do you think we should do?”

Having witnessed Blake’s sharp side earlier, none of the nobles dared to speak up immediately.

“Feel free to share your thoughts.”

His blood-red hair, even darker than the First Prince’s, and his brown eyes bore into the nobles, making the atmosphere even heavier.

Then, one viscount raised his hand to speak.

“Your Grace, may I say something?”

“Speak freely, Viscount Steel.”

“The Emperor appointed the Third Prince as the Tax Inspector, and…”

Blake’s frown deepened as Steel brought up a topic that had been on his mind. He nodded for him to continue.

“As the Head of the Tax Department, appointed by your grace, I suggest setting a trap to entangle the Third Prince with bribes.”

Steel’s proposal made Duke Blake look at him skeptically.

“Do you think the recent incident with Helington was just a coincidence?”

Viscount Steel replied confidently.

“Your Grace, I believe the Third Prince’s actions yesterday were due to drunkenness. He reeked of alcohol, and I think he acted emotionally because he couldn’t handle his liquor.”

Most of the nobles nodded in agreement with Steel’s assessment. They preferred to think the talentless Third Prince had no special intent in capturing Helington.

Blake’s eyes grew colder as he looked at them.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

The confused nobles stared at Blake as he remained silent. Removing 15 years of bias in one go wasn’t easy. He needed to test his hypothesis and make the lower-ranking nobles nervous. He needed to see if the Third Prince’s actions were truly a bid for the throne or just a whim.

‘No matter how I look at it, it’s the former.’

Blake was convinced that the Third Prince had hidden his ambitions behind the mask of a fool. Otherwise, the shrewd Emperor wouldn’t have appointed him as the Tax Inspector.

Blake’s snake-like eyes fixed on Viscount Steel. A man unaware of the gravity of his actions, driven by greed, seemed perfect for the job.

“Viscount Steel, can I trust you?”

“Yes, Your Grace. Trust me, and I’ll deliver results beyond your expectations.”

Liam, sitting next to Blake, felt uneasy at Steel’s confidence. Steel reminded him too much of Helington.

‘Better safe than sorry. Maybe I should test him one more time…’

Blake, already considering Steel a disposable piece, promised a reward to motivate him.

“If you succeed, I’ll give you a great reward.”

Hearing the promise, Steel’s eyes shone with greed, quickly forgetting the fear of death he had felt earlier.

Steel mocked Helington, who had hanged himself. The man who had belittled him while claiming to be the Third Prince’s drinking buddy had met a fitting end.

“I won’t disappoint you, Your Grace.”

“Any other opinions?”

The other nobles remained silent. With Steel taking the lead, they decided to wait and see the results before acting.

“Then, this meeting is adjourned.”

As the meeting ended, the nobles cautiously left Duke Blake’s meeting room.

Unlike the others, Earl Liam stayed behind. Seeing this, Blake addressed him.

“Is there something else?”

“Your Grace, I don’t think the Helington incident was a coincidence.”

Blake’s eyes gleamed with interest.

“What do you mean?”

“The Helington I knew might have been arrogant, but he wasn’t one to misjudge situations.”

“Not a coincidence?”

“Yes, Your Grace. If Helington had failed in his mission, you wouldn’t have entrusted him with it in the first place.”

Liam’s words could be interpreted as blaming Blake for Helington’s failure. He looked at Blake with a tense expression.

Then, Blake’s chilling laughter echoed through the meeting room. After laughing madly, he looked at Liam with a serious gaze.

“Earl Liam.”

“Yes, Your Grace…”

“Are you saying my judgment was wrong?”

Faced with Blake’s direct question, Liam clenched his fists and answered.

“I’m saying the circumstances affecting your judgment have changed.”

Blake looked at him with amusement. Sensing the Duke’s cold gaze, Liam lowered his head.

“That’s why I like you.”

Hearing this, Liam finally breathed a sigh of relief, feeling he had regained some of Blake’s trust.

“Do you think Viscount Steel will succeed?”

“I believe he is likely to fail.”

“Then why didn’t you warn him?”

“I thought you wanted to verify the information that influenced your judgment.”

Satisfied with Liam’s answer, Blake smiled and looked out the window.

“Listening to you has given me some confidence in my judgment.”

At his gesture, a figure knelt before him and handed him a paper detailing the events in the prison. Blake quickly read it and then burned it in the brazier.

He hoped not to repeat the same mistakes.

The Ghost Step, unlike the Sword King’s swordsmanship, is a singular skill.

Hyun-soo was curious.

Could the Ghost Step, which could only be performed once, surpass the advantage of the three-chapter technique?

How many attacks per second could the real Spear Heaven deliver?

[Grout’s HP is at 61%.]

For a moment, Hyun-soo’s body was controlled by the system.

Two true ghosts began to walk.

Towards a single demon ahead.

Ben was the first to leave an afterimage and disappear.

Moving at a speed Grout couldn’t respond to, Ben stabbed his side.

Thud-!

[You have taken 43,031 damage.]

In intense pain, Grout became calm.

‘I managed to block 10 out of 12 of that guy’s attacks before.’

Grout’s reflexes were beyond common sense.

After Ben passed by, Hyun-soo tried to block the sword aimed at Grout’s back.

But Hyun-soo was one step faster.

Sshing-

“……!?”

The speed surpassed the Ghost Step Hyun-soo had previously exhibited.

Furthermore, Grout had only received minor damage when he allowed Hyun-soo’s Ghost Step before.

But now, he received damage far beyond that time.

[You have taken 37,963 damage.]

Though it was less damage than Spear Heaven, it was still enough to threaten Grout.

Additionally, the disadvantage of continuous attack skills, which apply multiple hits in one attack, was that they couldn’t trigger a critical hit.

But Hyun-soo was different.

[A critical hit has occurred.]

[You have taken 54,003 damage.]

This was thanks to the passive skill, “Swordsmanship’s Subtlety,” which compensated for the inability to trigger critical hits.

Grout became urgent.

“Kraaahhhh!”

He judged that he couldn’t block the attacks of the two ghosts.

As a result, he focused on absorbing all the blood-red orbs around him to recover.

Thud-!

Soon, Grout’s eyes widened.

His HP was dropping faster than the sword’s rampage.

[Grout’s HP falls below 43%.]

[Grout’s HP falls below 41%.]

[Grout’s HP recovers to 52%.]

[Grout’s HP falls below 49%…]

[Grout’s HP falls below 47%…]

‘This is insane…’

Hyun-soo was impressed. Until now, he had walked in a hurry while performing the Ghost Step.

In contrast, the old man who passed by occasionally was full of composure.

Finally, he realized.

The Ghost Step, when properly manifested, had a power that was by no means inferior to the Sword King’s swordsmanship with its three chapters.

It transcended any power when properly displayed.

In an instant, it exceeded 26 times.

At this point, the bodies of both individuals began to overload.

But the two ghosts did not stop.

[Grout’s HP falls below 4%.]

The strength of their bodies, which had begun to refuse orders, was dramatically elevated.

To kill him and save Arte.

[Grout’s HP falls below 2%.]

“Ugh!”

“Urrgh!”

Already at their limits, the muscles in their calves felt like they were about to burst, and their arms were swollen tight with tension.

The final blow.

Ben’s spear pierced the demon’s abdomen, and Hyun-soo’s sword struck down on its shoulder.

“Haah… haah…”

“Huff… huff…”

Hyun-soo panted heavily alongside Ben, filled with admiration.

Thirty-three times.

That was the number of attacks Ben had delivered in one second.

[Grout’s HP drops to 0%.]

Hyun-soo anticipated the notification that the demon Grout had been slain.

Then it came.

[The Immortal Demon]

Hyun-soo and Ben’s faces twisted.

Grout, impaled through the abdomen and struck on the shoulder, still hadn’t vanished.

“No way…”

Hyun-soo’s face turned pale.

The demon Grout’s trait was infinite regeneration using blood as a medium.

Some named monsters possessed multiple traits.

[Grout does not die and is resurrected.]

[HP is restored to 80%.]

[The Immortal Demon can no longer be used.]

[Due to the use of the Immortal Demon, the Blood Demon cannot be used.]

Because of Grout’s trait, he lost the power of infinite regeneration.

“This is dangerous…”

Hyun-soo knew.

Barad and Ben’s HP had dropped below 40%, and the same went for the members of the Guild Bright Future.

Additionally, what they had feared from the beginning was coming true.

Grout was recovering and becoming more solid, but as the first, second, and third battles progressed, they were becoming more exhausted and weaker.

‘Do we have any means left to kill the fully recovered Grout now…?’

No.

NPCs also had skill cooldown times.

When extreme mana was consumed, skills couldn’t be activated until it was restored.

Ben and Hyun-soo quickly withdrew their weapons.

“To have pushed me this far, I must commend you.”

Grout was genuinely surprised.

In hundreds of years, the Immortal Demon had never been activated.

Before they could take cover, Grout exploded the blood around him.

Boom-

Ben and Hyun-soo’s HP plummeted as they were blown away.

Especially Ben, who seemed to have sustained severe injuries.

At that moment, Hyun-soo’s mind raced.

‘We need to use the demon’s power that primarily uses blood against him.’

What method could there be?

Soon, Hyun-soo recalled an artifact.

It was something very familiar to the public.

***

“Urgh!”

“Ugh…”

Nel’s face turned pale.

Ben and Hyun-soo, embedded in the ground, appeared to have suffered quite critical blows.

[Hyun-soo’s HP drops below 50%.]

[Ben’s HP drops below 16%.]

Especially, Ben’s condition seemed worse.

Belia summoned her final strength and offered a prayer of the saint to Ben.

[Ben’s HP is restored to 30%.]

“It’s over now, I’ve exhausted all my divine power.”

At that moment, Hyun-soo saw the guild chat.

Nel, after confirming it, issued an order via guild chat.

[Nel: We will now focus all our efforts not on hunting demons but on protecting Barad, Ben, and Bella. Unlike us, their lives are finite, and we must bear that in mind. If necessary, we must throw ourselves in harm’s way to save them.]

It was a bleak order coming from Nel.

The situation wasn’t good to that extent.

Furthermore, as Hyun-soo issued additional orders based on what he had said, he suddenly saw Grout approaching.

[30 seconds until the end of summoning.]

There was no function to forcibly send them back.

They could only return once the summoning time expired.

“Sword Master.”

Barad turned his head at the voice calling him.

Spear Heaven Ben smirked.

“Do not die.”

“Likewise.”

And in the Guild Bright Future, Bark took the lead.

“Let’s go.”

And Grout, confident of victory, released a roar.

“Hahaha!!”

Barad, Spear Heaven Ben, Bella, and the members of the Guild Bright Future all rushed forward simultaneously.

Clang

Thud-thud-thud-

A fierce battle ensued.

The face of Grout, who had been laughing confidently, turned fierce.

Though they were all seemingly dying, somehow they didn’t fall.

Especially remarkable was the unyielding bodies and mental strength of Barad and Ben.

They were currently in critical condition.

Barad’s wrist didn’t move well, and Ben had several broken ribs, making movement difficult.

Boom-

Crash

Even in that situation, Ben pierced his abdomen, and Barad struck down on his shoulder.

At the same time, the members of the Guild Bright Future surged forward.

Roar

[Grout’s HP drops below 60%.]

“Woooo!”

“Argh!”

But Grout knew. They were like beacons in the wind.

Flickering dangerously as if they would go out if a strong wind blew.

Grout targeted Ben as the first target to kill.

An explosion occurred.

Once.

Boom-

Twice.

Boom-

Thrice.

[Grout’s HP drops below 60%.]

Boom-

4th time, 5th time.

Thunk!

“Ugh…!”

[Ben’s HP drops below 10%.]

Ben’s body, now a mess of wounds, was stained with blood.

Grout hurriedly approached, aiming for his neck.

Ben felt dizzy.

‘…I’m going to die.’

This one attack would surely kill him.

Then, someone pushed Ben aside and stood in his place.

It was Bark.

“Gah…!”

Bark grabbed Grout’s sword, which had completely shattered his shoulder, with both hands.

[Indomitable Tank]

[Exhausts life force to hold down enemies.]

[Can last for 6 seconds.]

“This is it, hurry!”

Steam rose from Bark’s body as it burned bright red.

Eventually, the final group attack came from the surroundings.

Thunk!

Clang-clang-clang-thunk!

Boom!

And Bark was literally burning up his own life force.

The penalty for activating this skill was forced logout.

“These insects until the end!”

[Grout’s HP drops below 55%.]

And Bark slowly felt himself dispersing.

Leveling down due to the forced logout of a high-ranker is lethal.

But.

‘Ben, Barad, and Bella mean too much to Hyun-soo.’

Bark completely dispersed.

[Guild member Bark has fallen.]

After that dreadful notification, Grout truly became enraged.

“You don’t want to play along anymore, do you?”

He wanted to torment them one by one and cut off their breath.

But now, he no longer felt the need, knowing there was no time.

It was time to kill them, who had tormented him so much.

[6 seconds remaining until the end of summoning.]

All the blood shed began to float in the air.

Ben, Barad, Bella, and the other members of the Guild Bright Future.

Even the blood shed by Grout and the blood that had seeped into the ground.

All that blood floated around them like fist-sized droplets.

The power of approximately 786 drops of blood was the pinnacle of Grout’s blood power.

[Bloodfest]

[A massive explosion covering a radius of 60m occurs.]

[Unleashes a power of 800% additional attack power.]

It was a single occasion. This one time would kill everyone in this place.

Nel’s face turned pale.

Ben and Barad desperately tried to stop the spell.

[Attacks against Grout are impossible in the Bloodfest situation.]

Ben and Barad already felt it was too late.

“You shall die.”

The droplets of blood swelled up.

It was the harbinger of an explosion.

Then.

“What’s this?”

The droplets of blood did not explode.

No, instead, they suddenly moved somewhere slowly.

Grout sensed something unusual.

What he discovered at the end of the fierce battle.

“Why are they gathered here?”

They didn’t gather.

They knew that if they gathered and were attacked, they would all die.

[1 second remaining until the end of summoning.]

Grout realized.

They were wrapping, hiding something.

Ben let out a small laugh.

“This is the true form of my friend Hyun-soo.”

Barad said.

“Yes, the power of a master craftsman.”

They, who had been hiding something, took a few steps back and cleared the way.

One user who had been hiding inside emerged.

A single sword, completed through emergency crafting, was handed over.

The sword slowly descended into Hyun-soo’s hand.

Sshk.

A sword with a black blade and grip, entirely made of darkness.

Seeing that sword, Grout recalled another sword.

“A demon sword…?”

***

From ancient times, demon swords were known to be blood-stained.

The system acknowledges its power if it is crafted perfectly.

[‘Help me, Friend’ summoning is coming to an end.]

Guild Bright Future’s members, now turning into light, were observed.

When Hyun-soo wielded the sword, all the blood droplets Grout had created moved to the demon sword Hyun-soo had crafted.

Effect placed on this sword.

[Absorbs all blood.]

The mysterious demon sword began to absorb even the blood inherent in Grout.

[Grout is weakened.]

[Grout is weakened.]

An interesting fact was that he was rapidly absorbing blood, and both his level and HP were weakening simultaneously.

[Grout’s HP drops below 30%.]

“A… A demon sword…? How can a human make a demon sword! What’s more, what on earth is that demon sword!”

[Fiend Grout Lv.378]

“People call this sword by this name.”

Swoosh!

Grout’s eyes shook.

The blood droplets he was emitting. And the power of blood contained in his own body.

“Tyrving.”

Those powers were sucked into the demon sword and became the source of its power.

A tremendous power erupted from the demon sword.

Kuhooooo!

The ground shook, and the heavens and earth were in turmoil.

Inside the carriage returning to the academy.

“Hans, some tea.”

“Here you go.”

Despite the risk of spilling the tea due to the bumpy ride, which could result in burns, both me, the server and Luciana, the receiver, maintained their composure.

“Would you like a cup as well?”

“No, thank you. I don’t want to spill it.”

“Ha ha, Lady Roberk, you worry too much. That won’t happen, will it?”

Just as Theodore said, this carriage carried three noble children and was prepared with magic, and the best coachman hired by Yegor. As a result, the surface of the tea in Luciana’s cup remained perfectly still, proving Camilla Roberk’s concerns unnecessary.

“When will I ever get to drink tea served by someone with higher grades than mine? I’d like a cup too, please.”

“As you wish.”

Taking out another cup engraved with the Speda family crest, I poured hot water into it to warm it up. Then, I filled the emptied cup with tea from the kettle. The tea, golden and fragrant, guaranteed a delightful taste. After all, it was the work of Bathory, now well-versed in the role of a maid.

‘In the north, she was of no use, but she should at least perform maid duties properly.’

With these impudent thoughts, which would have made the person involved furious if she heard them, I placed the fragrant tea in front of him without spilling a drop.

“By the way, it’s a pity. In the end, the Wendigo from the rumors didn’t show a single hair.”

“Indeed, it’s strange. Once they start causing trouble, Wendigos usually go on a rampage for at least a month, making everyone shudder in fear….”

While quietly listening in on the conversation, I smiled inwardly. Of course, it was expected. It was the king’s command. As long as they were ordered to lay low in their hideout, they wouldn’t recklessly harm people.

Moreover…

‘No more madness, right?’

‘Yes, since the king has ascended the throne, the disasters affecting our race will gradually disappear. Not just Wendigos, but other doppelgängers will also be affected.’

Iskadel said that the Wendigos originally imitated reindeer to avoid human eyes. He confidently claimed that, in their right minds, they wouldn’t attack humans.

‘With the king’s command added, problems caused by Wendigos in the north will disappear.’

However…

“It ended too anticlimactically. Although it’s fortunate, it’s personally disappointing.”

The disappointment of a hunter who missed their prey lingered.

The loud clink of glass hitting glass revealed Luciana’s true feelings.

“I agree. I had high expectations.”

And the same was true for Theodore. Unlike Camilla, who was disgusted, two pairs of eyes full of regret scanned the windows, searching for any sign of monsters.

‘It was the same in the original work.’

Luciana and Theodore had quite similar personalities. Competitive spirit. They were always thirsty for the emotions derived from dueling with strong opponents. Perhaps that’s why they maintained a certain level of friendship despite their differing positions as influential figures in the Emperor’s faction and the Nobles’ faction. They continued to spar and interact with each other.

‘Of course, Theodore is more active, sociable, and has quite a few friends, but still.’

There were simply too few people who recognized Luciana’s warmth within her cool demeanor and her delicate side within her charisma. The only time they severed ties was…

-Miss Speda, I can no longer stand by and watch your wrongdoings.

-Ha, what are you talking about? Go on, keep babbling.

-A duel trial! What crime has Rene committed to deserve this?!

-You don’t understand anything. That woman… well, if you must know, it’s because she didn’t know her place and coveted my position.

When Luciana, the mid-boss and one of the potential love interests, faced off with the protagonist, blinded by love, the friendship between them was nothing but a thing of the past.

-Do you have the luxury to argue right and wrong with words? In a duel trial, one must prove their conviction with strength.

-I won’t lose! Not for her!

The rest is predictable. Theodore transforms from a mere candidate to the true love interest, and Luciana follows the path of downfall as usual.

‘I won’t just watch it happen this time.’

This time is different. I’m on her side, the one who knows this world the best.

At that moment, Camilla’s voice pulled me out of my reminiscence.

“What are you grumbling about? You were properly compensated.”

“Haha… that’s true, Lady Roberk. I did get something like this.”

Theodore shrugged and smiled broadly. He had indeed been rewarded handsomely without even having to fight properly. Such a sweet job was hard to come by. Though they only managed to subdue one creature, the fact that the Wendigo’s activity had quieted down was seen as a great achievement.

What was sparkling on Theodore’s arm now was that very reward. Proudly rolling up his sleeve, he revealed a pair of embroidered gloves adorned with white fur. It was a familiar item.

Yeti Power Gauntlets.

It was a relic Luciana once recommended to me, and now it belonged to him.

And that was the same for me as well.

[Eliminate the Wendigo and bring peace to the north!]

[Reward: Additional points, access to the Vault (limited to basement level 2), ???]

When the offer to provide the reward, which I thought had been canceled, came up, I couldn’t believe my luck. In the end, I got the Shadow Order position, the Speda family’s reward, and even gained influence over the Wendigo forces. It was a sweet result of killing three birds with one stone.

But then,

“You’ve got a keen eye. That’s a fine relic from that floor’s archives.”

“Ah, really? I’ll make good use of it.”

‘Luciana…?’

To others, she always spoke in the same flat tone with an expressionless face, but to me, it was clear. Her tone slightly lifted at the end, as if she was impressed, and her eyebrow subtly tilted from horizontal.

Theodore Treja, he had earned Luciana’s ‘recognition.’

“Ahem. Lady Luciana.”

I casually interrupted between him and her. It wasn’t just because her teacup was empty. To be precise, it was to disrupt this unsettling atmosphere.

‘Hmph. It’s still too early. Luciana’s encounter should happen only after the main male lead is determined, at least.’

I admit that Theodore and Luciana get along quite well. But for now, his status is only that of a candidate for the main male lead. His handsome appearance and easygoing personality are effective weapons to attract the saint away from the crown prince. Though I have multiple cards to play in Oparn and Ricky, having more cards is always better.

For a more perfect plan… that’s just an excuse. I glanced him up and down, clicking my tongue inwardly. Though I personally hold him in good regard, if asked if he is suitable as Luciana’s partner, my answer would be, “I don’t think so.”

‘He doesn’t fit. A suitable partner for Luciana should at least meet certain criteria.’

Luciana, who rarely expresses her emotions other than anger, doesn’t match well with Theodore, who frequently shows his emotions honestly. Ideally, a partner for her would be someone who can not only soothe the clumsy Luciana but also understand her unspoken feelings. Someone more secretive, who can gently draw out her inner emotions…

Such a man would suit her better.

Anyway, in my eyes, as someone who knows Luciana well, Theodore could never pass the test.

“Hans? What is it?”

Luciana, unaware of my inner thoughts, questioned me as I suddenly interrupted their conversation.

“Ahem, Lady Luciana. I also chose the same relic as Lord Theodore.”

“…Haha, it seems you took my advice to heart. It’s finally finding its true owner. Well done.”

Her reaction to me was different from earlier with Theodore. Her eyes noticeably curved in a smile.

And from that came a faint smile. I found myself momentarily captivated by her face before quickly turning away. Only then did my mind clear.

Let’s be honest. Plans and all that didn’t matter. As someone who monopolized her ‘recognition,’ the fact that it was now being shared with Theodore was simply unbearable.

“Yes, it’s all thanks to your discernment, Lady Luciana. Thanks to you, it seems my chronic strength issues have been somewhat resolved. Thank you.”

“Enough with the flattery. It’s something you obtained with your own strength, so make good use of it.”

I bowed respectfully, and she nodded in return.

Ah, that’s Luciana for you. Her posture was so precise and disciplined, perfect for showing off to others.

“Haha, you two have a very close master-servant relationship. It’s good to have someone loyal by your side.”

Theodore laughed heartily as he sipped his tea. Even though the conversation with Luciana had suddenly been interrupted, he didn’t seem to mind at all. His easygoing demeanor, which had seemed endearing until now, suddenly struck me as irritating for not actively engaging with Luciana.

At that moment, Theodore, who had been smiling and complimenting us, casually posed a question.

“Is it really okay? We didn’t do much.”

“A northern warrior treats his words as if they were made of steel. The Duke has ordered us to spare no support, and you all deserve proper rewards.”

Apparently, he hadn’t had the chance to ask earlier due to the many people around the mansion. With both Luciana and I nodding in reassurance, Theodore’s face brightened even more.

“Well, it’s a shame we couldn’t fight the Wendigo. But we did gain a rare relic that only comes from the north and made new friends. Isn’t that perfect?”

“Friends? Are we really at a point where we can call it that? And it’s not even a new relationship.”

“Haha, maybe not for the young ladies, but what about Sir Byron?”

‘Huh? Suddenly, he’s talking about me?’

Smoothly bypassing Lady Roberk’s scolding and slightly redeeming himself in my eyes, he placed a hand on my shoulder.

‘Did he mean me?’

“With skills capable of defeating a Wendigo! The courage to charge into a monster-infested place alone! That’s more than enough to become a friend of Theodore Treja!”

“Haha, thank you for valuing me so highly.”

“Let’s exchange swords sometimes. I’m curious about the skills of the third-ranked student.”

“…Ugh.”

“Haha.”

It was quite a burdensome declaration. That sword at his waist wasn’t just for show, and his sixth-place entrance exam rank wasn’t achieved by playing around.

‘If Luciana has mastered all the swordsmanship of the north, Theodore is the master of all the swordsmanship of the east.’

Not just the sword, but from the katana, which is hard to keep up with in terms of speed, to the guandao, which combines weight and power. As a frontliner, he was an incredibly reliable dealer character.

That made him a tough opponent in sparring.

“A sparring match with Sir Treja, who is skilled in martial arts. It’s an honor beyond my reach.”

But rather than feeling overwhelmed, I saw it as a good opportunity. It was a chance to observe a main male lead candidate up close and to use the sparring to improve my own skills. More importantly, I needed to be sure of my current capabilities.

‘Can I confidently claim victory against the main male lead candidates now?’

I had a record of defeating the crown prince, but that victory was achieved by sacrificing the lives of my subordinates to wear him down. When the time comes for Luciana’s potential downfall, which could end in disaster, I needed to be able to face the main male lead candidates with confidence and continuously grow stronger.

In that sense, sparring with Theodore was a great opportunity not only for growth but also to potentially ally with one of my future adversaries.

“If you wish, shall we spar immediately upon returning to the academy?”

“Haha, indeed! I knew I judged you correctly. I was hoping you’d say that. I welcome it!”

Theodore enthusiastically patted my shoulder.

‘Ow, that hurts, you jerk. Stop it!’

I almost let my true feelings slip due to the pain from the overwhelming strength difference, but I managed to force a smile through sheer endurance and my ingrained servant mindset.

“You two have become friends quickly.”

“That’s Hans’s strength, isn’t it? He has a knack for quickly becoming familiar with everyone.”

Luciana quietly praised me while lifting her teacup.

‘…Huh? Did I see that wrong?’

But for some reason, her slightly furrowed brows suggested she was a bit displeased.

‘Is the tea cold and tasteless? That shouldn’t be the case.’

***

A day had passed since we conversed in the carriage. The harsh cold of the north had subsided, and we were welcomed by warm weather.

“It’s quicker than I thought.”

“Whew, I finally feel alive. No matter how much I bundle up, I can never get used to the northern cold.”

“Lady Roberk, it was only two weeks…”

Ignoring Theodore’s comment, Camilla hurried towards the dormitory.

“Ugh… I’m so tired.”

“I agree. It seems the journey has taken its toll. I should go rest as well.”

“Oh, let me carry your luggage!”

As I rushed to carry her sword, she waved me away.

“It’s fine. You have a prior engagement, don’t you? I’ll handle it myself. You should go.”

…I did have an appointment.

“Sir Byron, shall we head to the training grounds?”

He must have found it hard to wait any longer.

Theodore approached eagerly, his eyes filled with anticipation. He even instructed the servants who came to carry his luggage to assist Luciana, ensuring there was no way for me to back out.

‘There’s no escape.’

I had intended to go along with him from the start, but a persistent man like this doesn’t suit Luciana.

“I apologize, but I don’t plan to lose. I must repay the time I borrowed from my lord with a victory.”

“Haha, I like your confidence! Yes, anyone engaging in a spar should always give their best!”

His hearty voice conveyed no thought of losing, only the determination to defeat me.

However,

‘…I’m in no position to talk.’

Competitive spirit wasn’t exclusive to Luciana and Theodore. I, too, felt my fingers itch, provoked by his challenge.
