Act 121

Prev I TOC I Next

It is safe to say that there are almost no nobles who are unaware of the prestige held by the Empire’s Four Great Houses. Unlike the Crypart family, which values martial prowess, the Godrich family exerts a dazzling influence in politics and society. There’s even a saying that at a Godrich family social gathering, even a lion can be turned into a rabbit. For this reason, offending that family was the last thing any noble should do. If bad rumors spread, the noble or their family would have to bear the full brunt of the consequences.

However, in the game, the Godrich family never took such a prominent stance. They always operated from the shadows, manipulating events like puppeteers, so I hadn’t paid much attention to them. Meeting them like this now feels surreal. As I continue to navigate this world as if it were real, I have come to realize some hidden settings within the game. For instance, there is the setting where the eldest son of the Godrich family, Arba, admires me—no, admires Julian. Julian’s feelings for his mother are genuinely heartfelt, uncharacteristic for a villain.

I was unknowingly adapting to this world.

“That’s the crest of the Godrich family…” I muttered to myself as I looked at the crest of the family I wished to avoid. Though I had grown accustomed to my habit of speaking to myself in polite speech, this time it felt strangely unfamiliar. It must have sounded like a threat to others.

“Indeed, the one you’re holding is one of the Godrich family’s children.”

An imposing elderly man with a stern expression spoke up from inside the training grounds. Despite his neatly tied white hair, his robust physique suggested that he had wielded a sword in his younger days.

‘That’s Orun Crypart,’ I realized.

Orun Crypart is the actual power behind the Crypart family and was once a renowned general who swept through the northern front. Though his past glory has faded, leaving him a grumpy old man, his intimidating build and swordsmanship remain.

‘I can sense his aura… No ordinary knight could handle him.’

If only he would play Go in the background instead.

‘What an unpleasant fellow,’ I thought.

As you know, Julian despises most members of the Crypart family. This also influenced my view of Orun Crypart.

“Lord Orun, you seem to be in remarkably good health for your age,” I said.

“You…”

At my mocking words, Orun glared at me, his eyes widening. The murderous intent he radiated was palpable, but I hadn’t lived an ordinary life to be cowed by it.

“Let Yern Gore go.”

“Oh, so this is Sir Yern Gore?” I replied, feigning recognition, and looked at the person clutched in my grip, whose life was under threat.

‘Damn, it had to be a member of one of the Four Great Houses.’

There was nothing to be gained from provoking them. Moreover, the Godrich family had some interactions with me through Arba.

‘There was no need to stir up trouble unnecessarily.’

However, because ‘Sombra’ overreacted, I had no choice.

Yern Gore, who had been groaning in pain, started trembling with fear as soon as our eyes met, his initial bravado gone. I understood why. The reflection of ‘Julian’ in his eyes must have seemed utterly sinister.

‘This damned face!’

A face that could terrify a crying child and make a cripple stand on their own two feet. In short, it had an overwhelmingly fearsome presence. But first, I needed to navigate this situation smoothly. Even though adding another negative mark to my reputation wouldn’t make a huge difference, it might hinder future plans.

With that in mind, I began looking for a way to calm Yern Gore down, trying to find some common ground. Building rapport was the best approach.

Let’s see, hmm?

“This sword… I can feel the touch of a master craftsman.”

Fortunately, I found it. I noticed the logo of ‘Dusk Flame’ on the scabbard he was wearing.

“It’s quite a fine item. I use their services as well.”

“Don’t tell me you managed to get a custom order!”

What nonsense is this?

I recalled my previous visit to ‘Dusk Flame.’ When I had sought out Ruger Orland to repair the ‘Moonlight Sword,’ I had encountered a woman who might have been a concubine of the Godrich family.

‘This guy isn’t just a knight of the Godrich family…’

He’s a member of the family? Even with bad ties, this is too much of a coincidence.

Just as I was about to let out a mirthless laugh at the absurdity of it all, Yern Gore sensed my grip loosen and struggled desperately to break free.

[Sombra responds to hostility.]

This guy! Again!

With no other choice, I decided to take the cleanest and simplest approach.

“Ah…!”

I applied strong pressure to his carotid artery. He held on for a moment but soon rolled his eyes back and lost consciousness.

Given his unsightly face, quite unbecoming of a member of the esteemed Godrich family, I instinctively closed his eyes for him. I thought I had maintained some boundaries.

“Y-you madman…”

“You’ve finally crossed the line, haven’t you!”

The knights guarding Orun and those from the Crypart family berated me.

“Heh, heh heh…”

However, I didn’t flinch, instead responding to their scolding with mad laughter.

“What’s so funny?”

“Have you finally lost your mind?”

“I just find this situation amusing.”

There’s no turning back now after making Yern Gore Godrich faint. Yet the reason for it doesn’t seem justifiable in the current situation.

Of course.

If I said, “There’s a demon named ‘Sombra’ living in my body, and I had to subdue him before he went on a rampage. How about some gratitude?” who would believe me?

It would be more fitting for Julian to say, “Ah! I should have just killed him.”

So, I needed to think quickly and find a way to justify my actions.

“Sir Herand is the legitimate heir of the Crypart family. In contrast, Sir Yern Gore is the child of a concubine and not quite a legitimate heir.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Isn’t it funny?”

Contrary to my words, this situation was incredibly troublesome for me. I had to rationalize my actions somehow.

“Those of you who hold me to a strict standard of blood purity are worried about a ‘half-blood’ getting hurt while ignoring what happened to the legitimate heir, Sir Herand.”

With that, I started laughing at everyone, chuckling mockingly.

“What nonsense are you spouting…”

Orun’s unpleasant voice pierced through the silence of the training grounds.

“Get out of the Crypart estate immediately. This place is not light enough for someone like you to step foot in.”

“When a mere member conducts the ‘Examination of Advancement,’ disregarding the rules, if that isn’t light, then what is?”

Orun’s eyes sharpened as I boldly stood up to his words.

“Or would you like to proceed with the ‘Examination of Advancement’?”

I can take it instead of Sir Herand.

Orun could surely anticipate what would follow without needing to say more.

As I spoke, I readied my sword. Normally, I would avoid confronting someone like Orun Crypart directly due to his immense power and unpredictable nature.

But it’s already spilt milk.

“Since Brother Herand seems to have difficulty even standing, I’ll entertain you in his stead, former Lord Orun.”

Moreover, my hatred for ‘Orun Crypart’ was as intense as it was the first time I saw ‘Oben.’ To the extent that I hoped he would accept my challenge so we could fight.

‘If it comes to that, it certainly won’t end normally.’

At this moment… I could kill him. The blood boiling inside me was beyond my control.

“Tsk.”

Fortunately, yet disappointingly, Orun seemed to have no intention of continuing. He threw the wooden sword he was holding to a nearby knight and looked at the still fallen Herand.

“We’ll stop here for today. If you don’t change your mind by the next time, it won’t end like this. Be prepared.”

After issuing his warning, Orun straightened his clothes and gave me a fierce glare. The look in his eyes, which went beyond hostility to murderous intent, only made me smile.

‘Try anything.’

Unlike before, Orun Crypart’s actions no longer frightened me. I had enough confidence in my own strength, and if things got tough, I could always rely on the power of the ‘Dawn Society.’

Thinking this made me feel like I was becoming a villain.

“Brother Herand!”

As Orun left, Joshua rushed out to support Herand. Herand, who was in terrible shape, was in no condition to be questioned about the soul stone I entrusted to him.

“What are you doing? Hurry up and take Brother Herand to his room!”

At Joshua’s urgent shout, the servants came running, lifted Herand, and started to carry him out of the training grounds.

“Brother Julian.”

As Joshua was about to leave the training grounds, he called out to me and cautiously looked back.

“Thank you…”

He awkwardly expressed his gratitude before following Herand.

To think I would hear such words. Maybe I’m not such a bad guy after all.

I shrugged and followed them. Joshua gave me a puzzled look, as if wondering why I was following.

Why are you coming along? his eyes seemed to ask.

Well, I have some business with Herand too.

***

“Ugh… Ugh…”

“Brother Herand, are you alright?”

As Herand groaned in pain, slowly regaining his senses, Joshua quickly got up and checked his condition.

“Yes, I’m fine. Phew. I’m still alive.”

At Herand’s assurance, Joshua sighed in relief.

“Where is Julian…?”

Having come to his senses, Herand began looking for Julian. Even while barely conscious, he seemed to have noticed Julian’s presence.

“He mentioned having some business and left the estate for a bit.”

“He must have gone to see Lady Milena’s grave.”

Hearing the unfamiliar name, Joshua looked slightly puzzled.

“Lady Milena… isn’t she Brother Julian’s mother?”

“Yes, that’s right… ugh.” Herand endured the pain as he sat up in bed.

“Come to think of it, Joshua, you’ve never met Lady Milena, have you?”

“No, I’ve only heard… no, I haven’t even properly heard about her.”

Her name was almost taboo, as Orun hated her with a pathological intensity.

“But, as Grandfather said, is it true that Lady Milena was from the North?”

“Yes, it’s true.” Herand’s confirmation made Joshua a bit uneasy.

The northern region of the Rosenda continent. The place where the Demon Lord Barbatos first appeared and where he was finally killed. Consequently, that place was still swarming with demons, and even after the Demon Lord’s death, his lingering thoughts spread like a cancer, turning the land into an uninhabitable wasteland.

The people living in the northern part of that continent were so despised and uncivilized that they hardly fit the category of ‘humanity.’

“The fact that Lady Milena is from the North makes you uncomfortable, doesn’t it?”

“Though I haven’t seen it with my own eyes, I’ve heard they sustain themselves by consuming demonic energy.”

Just the thought of eating demons made Joshua feel nauseous from his core. It reminded him of the time he saw a man transformed into a demon by the ‘Replica Horn’ at Julian’s estate, oozing slime.

Eating those things? It was unimaginable.

“I don’t know exactly what the North is like, but I can tell you this.”

“What do you mean?”

“Lady Milena was much more noble than someone like me and far from what you’d call a ‘savage.'”

“Brother, what does that have to do with earlier?” Joshua questioned Herand’s earlier words.

“I couldn’t understand what you were saying just now. Wouldn’t it have been better to at least outwardly agree with Grandfather?”

Herand turned his head to look directly into Joshua’s eyes. He knew it too. The stubbornness he displayed in the training ground was foolish enough to be called obstinate. But the guilt that had been growing in his heart swelled up like mold as time passed.

“When Lady Milena passed away, it was Orun, the then head of the family, who forced Julian to place her body in the coffin and bury her in the grave.”

“What? What do you mean…”

To the horrified Joshua, Herand recounted Julian’s childhood.

Julian, much younger than Joshua now, was treated worse than a servant in the family. Despite that, he endured bravely, beyond his years.

“My mother was strict with me.”

Julian, who never shed a tear despite the harsh treatment from those around him.

“But the coffin that held my mother… it couldn’t have been so light.”

Though despised, the child who was always cheerful felt sadness for the first time. Tears filled his eyes and streamed down his cheeks, yet he continued to hold them back.

That image deeply moved Herand and etched itself into his memory forever.

After finishing his work at the guild, Kang Hanul hurriedly headed somewhere. He arrived at a nursing home.

“Oh, you’re here?”

“Were there any issues today?”

“Not at all.”

The caregiver who greeted Kang Hanul soon brought an elderly woman over. She walked out quickly with the face of an excited child but paused when she saw Kang Hanul.

“Who are you?”

“Oh, you’re here. Sir, I’ll see you again tomorrow.”

“Yes. Take care.”

Despite the elderly woman’s puzzled voice, they only exchanged words with each other. As the caregiver returned to the nursing home, Kang Hanul, now alone with the elderly woman, reached out his hand.

“Let’s go.”

“Who are you!”

“It’s me, Hanul.”

Kang Hanul spoke with a smile, and the elderly woman tilted her head in confusion.

“What are you talking about? Where is my son!”

“Right here. Your son.”

“Huh?”

The elderly woman stared intently at Kang Hanul’s face, as if unable to understand, and then she suddenly exclaimed.

“No! You’re not my son!”

“I’m telling you, I’m Hanul, your son.”

Kang Hanul, seemingly accustomed to this situation, showed a troubled expression but still held her hand tightly and smiled.

“Mom. Do you remember the song you used to sing to me?”

“Song?”

Seeing the elderly woman’s slight interest, Kang Hanul softly murmured the lyrics.

“The white half-moon that came out during the day~”

Hearing the song, the elderly woman became quiet. Eventually, she started singing along with Kang Hanul, who continued singing the children’s song. It was a nostalgic tune that his mother often sang to him when he was young.

“When our baby was learning to walk~”

“If only you had worn shoes with a click-clack on one foot!”

The song, embedded in her being and sung while thinking of her son, brought back the lyrics even though her memory had faded, but her maternal love remained.

As they sang for a while and strolled around, Kang Hanul said, “Now can you recognize your son?”

“Huh? Hanul?”

“It’s me, Kang Hanul, your son.”

“Uhm…”

Despite singing together, the elderly woman still seemed uncertain and watched him warily. Kang Hanul scratched his head at the sight.

However, being used to this, he didn’t show his feelings and simply took something out from his pocket.

“I brought something different again today, Mom.”

“Huh?”

“You remember Kyu-seong, the younger one I always talk about? This time, he brought some mushrooms.”

“Mushrooms?”

Though her head didn’t remember, her body did, and she started smacking her lips. Seeing this, Kang Hanul laughed joyfully and sliced the mushrooms to make them easy to eat.

“Try some.”

“Okay.”

The elderly woman took the mushroom he handed her, opened her mouth slightly, and ate it. Chewing slowly, she soon reached out her hand and said,

“Give me more.”

“Haha!”

Kang Hanul cheerfully sliced the mushroom again and handed it to his mother. Although he was usually very fond of eating, at this moment, he was offering it without hesitation.

“How is it? Is it tasty?”

“Mmhmm.”

Seeing his mother nodding slightly and chewing, Kang Hanul felt a small happiness.

“But why aren’t you eating?”

“Me? I’ll eat whatever is left after you, Mom.”

“Don’t be like that, eat with me.”

“I can eat plenty. It’s fine, you go ahead, Mom.”

Even though she doesn’t remember him, Kang Hanul cherished even these small daily moments. Just having her nearby gave him a sense of comfort in a corner of his heart. He was also grateful to Kyu-seong for making his everyday life more colorful.

‘Doenjang jjigae.’

However, he wanted to be a bit greedier. The doenjang jjigae his mother used to make. Of course, even if he made it with Kyu-seong’s ingredients, it wouldn’t taste the same. But the thought of sharing a delicious meal with someone precious was enough.

His mother, and the dish he loved the most. It seemed trivial, but it had become something difficult to achieve now.

“Mom. How about we make some doenjang jjigae at home next time?”

“Doenjang jjigae? I’m good at making doenjang jjigae.”

“Haha! As your son, I know better than anyone how good your doenjang jjigae is.”

Kang Hanul wished for this happiness to last a bit longer.

* * *

From morning till evening.

After being outside for quite a long time, I returned home. I actually planned to stay overnight at my family home, but I hurried back due to something I checked just before leaving the dungeon.

‘Finally, it’s harvesting time.’

It took a really long time. No, for an ordinary farm, it might have been quick, but for me, it was the longest time I had ever taken to grow a crop.

“Strawberries! Strawberries!”

Ara sang excitedly. The crop to be harvested this time was none other than strawberries. Unlike the others which had been harvested two or three times already, the slowly growing strawberries finally started to show their bright red form.

When I arrived at the dungeon, the slimes were already busy harvesting the strawberries.

“Strawberries!”

Ara cheered and ran over. I could see the slimes welcoming her and sneakily handing her freshly harvested strawberries.

-Gobble gobble.

Gomgom was madly devouring the strawberries, paying no attention to our arrival.

“Wow, as expected, there are really a lot.”

I had been slightly surprised by the unusual number of strawberries since they started to fruit. They seemed to have about twenty times more fruit than usual strawberries, which might be why they took longer to ripen.

“Nom nom nom!”

“What is that sound?”

Ara made a strange noise after eating the strawberry. The size of the strawberries was normal, but I was curious whether the taste was also ordinary. Ara was a child who ate anything well, so her reaction couldn’t be entirely trusted.

Ping!

“Oh, thank you.”

Just then, a slime approached me and handed me a strawberry. Huh? Wasn’t this the one who liked to headbutt?

I first inspected the strawberry that was handed to me. Surely this one would also display an item description?

[Magic-infused Strawberry LV.1]

[A crop imbued with magic. It is harmless to the human body. When consumed, it grants a mild wound-healing effect.]

“What?!”

What is this? A healing potion?!

It had a similar ability to the item commonly referred to as a red potion. The only difference was that the word “mild” was missing in the potion’s description.

“Could it actually become a real potion if made into juice?”

The price of healing potions was quite high. Since they were essential for life, their demand was always high not only in dungeons but also in everyday life, yet the supply was always insufficient.

“Hmm.”

No wonder it took the strawberries the longest to harvest. If it’s something this precious, I can wait as long as needed.

“Gobble gobble!”

– Gobble gobble!

Next to me, strawberries were being devoured without hesitation.

Well, let me try one too.

Crunch!

‘Crunch?’

The moment I felt the unique texture for a strawberry.

I lost my mind, overwhelmed by the sweet and sour flavor.

“…Huh!”

Barely regaining my senses, I found myself clutching a handful of strawberries in both hands.

“What is this…?”

For a moment, I was confused, and then I realized my hands were disobeying my brain’s commands and moving the strawberries to my mouth.

And again, the intense strawberry juice exploded in my mouth.

“Sweet things are truly the best.”

So far, the harvested crops included cherry tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, Layla, sweet potatoes, ember grill, cucumbers, and eggplants. Among them, the only sweet crop was Layla, which had a strong sweet flavor, while the strawberries were a perfect balance of sweet and sour. The combination of sweetness and sourness was so exquisite, it felt like chewing on dozens of highly concentrated fruits at once.

“Why can’t I stop eating?”

Usually, such a strong flavor would get tiring or overwhelming, but it felt like I could keep eating endlessly.

Eventually, I had to muster all my willpower to stop my hands and mouth.

“Phew.”

Looking to my side, I saw Gomgom lying down with a satisfied smile and a bulging belly, while Ara, seemingly having regained her senses, was cautiously watching me.

For the record, her hands and mouth hadn’t stopped moving.

“Ara.”

“Huh!”

Like a thief caught in the act, Ara jumped and withdrew her hand from the strawberries.

“We’re not going to eat them all today, right? We’ll eat them tomorrow and the day after too.”

“Yeah! Yeah!”

Despite saying that, there were still plenty of strawberries. It seemed like our frantic eating hadn’t even dented the harvest, rewarding us for our long wait.

“Should we help out a bit now?”

“Let’s help!”

Once Ara and I started helping in earnest, the progress sped up. If Mark2 was here, we could have harvested even faster, but he was on an important mission right now.

“We’re running out of baskets.”

After repeatedly harvesting and transporting the strawberries, we eventually ran out of baskets to hold them. It felt like we were harvesting not just twenty times more strawberries than usual, but thirty times more.

“Ara, it looks like we’ll have to pile the harvested strawberries on the storage floor.”

“Okay!”

Ara ran to the storage room and dumped the strawberries from the baskets. Slimes quickly attached themselves to the dumped strawberries, covering them with their secretions. Even though I had seen this several times and we would wash and eat them afterward, it still felt a bit strange.

‘If we don’t do it that way, they’ll spoil quickly, so there’s no other choice.’

She brought back the empty baskets and we resumed the work. After working for several more hours, we finally saw the end.

“Wow, there really are a lot.”

“Hehehe.”

Ara smiled contentedly, looking at the strawberries piled up like a small hill. If I had eaten them alone, it probably would have taken me a lifetime to finish this amount of strawberries.

“Shall we try making some jam?”

“Jam?”

Ara tilted her head in curiosity. She hadn’t experienced fruit jam yet, but I could already see that she would love it.

“It’s late today, so I’ll make it for you tomorrow.”

“What is jam?”

“It’s when you put those strawberries in a pot and simmer them. Normally, you add sugar and simmer it together, but I think just simmering the strawberries alone will be enough.”

Still, I should look it up just in case. With the internet working well these days, a quick search would give me the recipe immediately.

“Simmer the strawberries?”

“Yeah. Let’s try making it together tomorrow.”

“Wow! I can make it too?”

“Yeah. It’s not difficult, so you can do it too, Ara.”

Ara’s eyes sparkled. Then, as if she were excited, she started doing her characteristic little dance.

“Haha.”

Even though it was time to sleep, she was still full of energy. Watching Ara’s cute dance skills, I felt that today had been a fulfilling day.

Oh, by the way, I got a message from Seon-ah just before returning to the dungeon.

‘A vlog?’

I knew what a vlog was. It was just sharing daily life through videos, right?

Seon-ah had said she wanted to film and share a vlog of Ara. Since most of the busy work had been finished, I was thinking of showing the Dungeon of Gluttony to my family, so I told them to come and visit.

Anyway, I needed to go back to the Dungeon of Gluttony to plant the beans that Hanul had requested, so it was killing two birds with one stone.

‘Seeing Ara helping with the farming would be quite heartwarming.’

It seemed like the kind of footage Seon-ah wanted would turn out well.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, it’s time to sleep.”

“Oh, our dear Ara. Let’s go to bed now.”

“Okay.”

You did well today. Sleep tight.

Palace 5

Prev | TOC I Next

The one who broke the strange silence first was Ian.

“Hmm, perhaps you don’t know who I am?”

The young mage blinked at Ian’s words and began to scrutinize the man standing before him.

Navy blue hair.

Red eyes.

There was only one person in the palace with navy blue hair and red eyes.

‘The Third Prince!’

“The notorious Third Prince!”

Realizing he had blurted out what should have stayed in his thoughts, Ian frowned, and the young mage immediately fell to his knees, begging for forgiveness.

“Your Highness, I have committed a grave offense.”

“It’s fine. How about you get up?”

It wasn’t uncommon for people who stayed in the Magic Tower to not recognize others. The only department where everyone knew him was the company development department.

“Is the Master of the Tower present?”

‘It would be easier to persuade Deus if the Master of the Tower isn’t around.’

When Ian asked about the Master of the Tower, the young mage’s answer was unexpected.

“Your Highness, did you perhaps bring something shiny?”

“Something shiny?”

Could it be that this young mage was openly asking a royal for a bribe?

Despite Ian’s surprise, the young mage responded confidently.

“The Master always receives some ‘tribute’ when someone who isn’t a member of the Tower visits. Even the Second Prince always presented something shiny.”

Hearing this, Ian was momentarily dumbfounded. Could the Master of the Tower be greedy for wealth and luxury?

“Hmm, first, let’s see if the Master of the Tower is inside.”

“It seems you didn’t bring anything. I’ll go inside and ask the senior mage.”

The young mage quickly entered and exited the Tower, then asked Ian about his purpose of visit.

“Is it necessary to meet the Master of the Tower?”

“No, I just wanted to take a look around the Tower.”

“Then I will guide you. Unfortunately, the Master is currently absent.”

‘Not something that can be summoned with money?’

Suppressing the urge to voice this thought, Ian maintained a calm demeanor.

Entering the tower, Ian had imagined a scene like a magical school from the modern world, but reality was different. It was merely a tower-shaped dormitory with many rooms.

“There’s nothing special?”

“Everyone is practicing elemental magic in their rooms. If Your Highness wishes to learn elemental magic…”

The young mage, who was talking about elemental magic, turned pale. He remembered the rumor about the Third Prince having no talent in magic or swordsmanship.

“I-I apologize, Your Highness.”

“It seems the Magic Tower makes frequent mistakes. Do you have multiple lives?”

At Ian’s sharp remark, the young mage bowed his head and replied.

“Please forgive me with your boundless generosity. I am still young and not accustomed to proper etiquette. I will ensure this doesn’t happen again.”

Ian, still retaining some modern sensibilities, decided to move past the young mage’s mistake and get to the point.

“By any chance, is De…”

Boom!

Despite the sudden explosion, not a single brick or speck of dust touched Ian.

“Power of the circle, protect us, Barrier!”

The guiding mage had immediately cast a barrier to protect Ian. Although Ian was unscathed, he saw an opportunity and decided to exploit it.

“Cough, cough. The Magic Tower seems to make mistakes frequently. Is this a new method of suicide?”

“Y-Your Highness, are you alright?”

This time, the young mage’s voice trembled, genuinely fearing something might happen.

“I have a strong trauma from explosions. I feel dizzy…”

It wasn’t just a trauma. He had been hit by a truck and transported to this world…

“Isn’t attempting to kill a royal a summary execution offense?”

“N-No! I would never think of killing the Third Prince!”

“Because I didn’t bring something shiny?”

Recalling the rumors about the Third Prince’s notorious behavior, the young mage immediately knelt down without hesitation.

“P-Please spare me, Your Highness.”

“The Master is absent?”

“T-That…”

As Ian and the young mage had a tense conversation, a clear voice reached Ian’s ears.

“Isn’t this the blue ball Adrian used to bring?”

Ian tilted his head at the mention of a ‘blue ball.’ Could it be referring to his blue hair?

“You don’t remember me? I’m Adrian’s close friend, Deus.”

Ian turned to look at the young man who introduced himself as Deus.

Black hair and black eyes.

He matched the description from the original novel.

As Ian stared at him with a calm expression, Deus introduced himself in a playful voice.

“Third Prince, I am Deus, the Master’s apprentice and your brother Adrian’s close friend.”

“Are you the one who caused the explosion?”

“Yes, so perhaps you could let my poor junior go?”

“Can you take full responsibility for an attempt to assassinate a royal?”

“Clearly, the junior can’t be held responsible.”

When Ian nodded, the young mage thanked Deus and stepped back.

Left alone, Deus began to treat Ian as Adrian’s younger brother.

“Rumor has it you’ve been a troublemaker, but you seem different today?”

“I think I understand your character.”

“You talk as if you’ve never seen me before. You used to follow me around calling ‘Brother Deus! Brother Deus!’ when you were little.”

Ian smirked at Deus’s words and got to the point.

“How will you take responsibility?”

Seeing Ian’s unchanged tone, Deus spoke seriously.

“I owe you now, so tell me what you want, and I will help.”

“Then I want to see the room where you do your research.”

Deus seemed flustered by Ian’s sudden request.

“Do you have to see it right now?”

“Or we could both stand trial before the Chancellor for attempting to assassinate a royal.”

At Ian’s threatening words, Deus’s eyes showed determination.

“Alright, but you must keep what you see in the lab a secret.”

“Forcing a royal to keep secrets? You’re quite bold.”

“What mustn’t be known, mustn’t be known.”

Feeling the resoluteness in Deus’s expression, Ian nodded.

“I give my honor as a royal.”

“I trust you as Adrian’s brother.”

“Trust me as a prince of the empire, not just Adrian’s brother.”

Finding Ian’s attempt to act mature endearing, Deus chuckled and led him to his lab.

Unlike the Magic Tower, Ian couldn’t help but gasp when he saw Deus’s lab. It looked like something out of a magical school from a movie.

Seeing Ian’s astonished expression, Deus proudly began to introduce his inventions.

[A magical book that allows storing multiple books in one device]

[A water tap that produces warm water using mana]

[A device that records events]

Except for the fact that mana was used instead of electricity, the items were similar to those from the modern world.

“Did you think of and create these on your own?”

“There’s no one else in the Magic Tower as interested in magical engineering as I am.”

‘He’s a genius.’

Impressed by Deus’s talent, Ian listened as Deus spoke earnestly.

“You must never tell anyone about what you’ve seen here. Swear it on your honor as a prince.”

“Why must I keep it secret? Many of these things seem beneficial to the empire.”

Deus sighed deeply and replied with a bitter expression.

“My master doesn’t like me studying magical engineering. He thinks it’s a waste of money.”

Recalling past scoldings from the Master, Deus frowned and continued.

“Damn it, who would have known the first mana stone I bought with every penny I saved would explode today? Thankfully, my master isn’t here today. Otherwise, I can’t imagine the scolding…”

As Deus shuddered at the thought, Ian remembered what the HR director had told him over drinks: Strategy begins with the planning team but is completed through the execution team. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep good relations with HR to place the right talent in key positions.

Even a single faulty cog in the implementation could derail the entire strategy or extend the timeline absurdly. In this sense, Deus was a crucial talent for Ian. For the empire, for Deus, and for his own future, a ‘personnel transfer’ was necessary.

“Deus, if you had to choose between magical engineering and elemental magic, which would you pick?”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m asking what you truly want to do.”

“I’ve never thought about it.”

Deus’s casual response made Ian frown, prompting Deus to explain further.

“Ian, if you had overwhelming talent in both swordsmanship and magic, would you give up one? I’m talented in both elemental magic and magical engineering. As the Master’s most promising apprentice, why should I give up one?”

“Why does such a genius hide his magical engineering then?”

In response to Ian’s question, Deus made a money gesture with his fingers.

“I told you, my master is strict about the budget. To get another mana stone like the one I lost today, I’d have to save for a year!”

Deus glanced around cautiously before whispering to Ian.

“My master is so stingy about the budget that very few in the empire could handle his wrath when he’s angry. Maybe only the Emperor?”

Despite being two years older, Deus seemed like a child due to his magical nature.

“I can support you with funds and convince the Master of the Tower.”

Ian’s sudden proposal made Deus respond in a bewildered tone.

“What do you mean?”

“I want to buy your talent in magical engineering. If you focus on elemental magic, you might catch up to the Master in five years. But if you concentrate on magical engineering, you’ll become an unparalleled figure in the empire within three years.”

Ian’s declaration to bet on his genius made Deus momentarily dumbfounded.

“What are you planning to do with me?”

Act 120

Joshua couldn’t understand it no matter how much he thought about it.

No matter what happens to Herand, it shouldn’t matter much.

“Damn, why did I lie?”

Orun’s usually stern and sharp eyes had something chilling in them this time.

A strong killing intent.

Sensing that this ominous feeling was directed at ‘Herand’, Joshua had instinctively lied.

‘Grandfather particularly hated Herand…’

Orun holds more power than the current head of the family, Joshua’s father.

He is the de facto head of the family and the chairman of the council of nobles, wielding immense power that even the top nobles bow to.

Defending Herand, who fell out of Orun’s favor, is absolutely forbidden.

Joshua knows this. He knows, but…

“I think he was here until a moment ago, but I don’t know now. He might have gone out.”

“Is that so? Hmm…”

Orun sighed at Joshua’s words that he didn’t know where Herand was.

“If he comes to the mansion, I will contact you directly, grandfather.”

Smiling, Joshua decided to continue lying to send Orun away.

Even if his grandfather entered the mansion and found Herand, he could claim he ‘didn’t know.’

“Haha, my dear child.”

Orun grasped Joshua’s shoulder.

In his prime, Orun was a renowned knight, and his hand was twice the size of Joshua’s.

“So, Herand is in the mansion?”

Orun’s eyes glinted as he tightened his grip on Joshua’s shoulder.

‘Ugh.’

The pain was excruciating, but Joshua tried not to grimace and looked at Orun with an innocent expression.

“You didn’t treat the first and second sons like brothers, but you always called Herand ‘Brother’.”

Orun’s sharp remark made Joshua flinch.

‘Damn, he caught on.’

He knew too.

When he was young, if Herand hadn’t helped him with a certain matter, he wouldn’t have received Orun’s favor like now.

“Ugh…”

As the pain intensified, Joshua eventually groaned.

But Orun, indifferent, only increased the pressure on his shoulder.

“He suggested in the recent family meeting that Julian be accepted as a legitimate member of the family, dropping the ‘Frason’ title.”

He knew. He was there.

“That’s absolutely unacceptable. Thinking such a thing, let alone saying it in a public setting.”

It was actually Joshua who brought up the topic.

He was about to say so, but Orun’s grip stopped him.

It felt like a silent command not to utter it.

“Oh, Chairman Orun.”

Herand, who had appeared without Joshua noticing, called out to Orun.

Although he was addressing his grandfather, Herand used his title instead, which made Joshua feel sorry for him. But as the pressure on his shoulder eased, he felt relieved.

If his brother hadn’t shown up, his shoulder might have been crushed.

Given how Orun treated Joshua, such a thing wouldn’t happen, though.

Orun’s glance back was sharp as ever.

“Herand, I heard about what happened at the family meeting.”

“……Yes.”

“Despite knowing how I, and the public, perceive Julian, you still uttered those words, didn’t you?”

Herand hesitated at Orun’s oppressive tone.

Already lacking the confidence to assert himself, Herand often heard people say, “Isn’t Herand from the collateral line, not Julian?”

Standing before Orun, Herand looked like a powerless animal.

“But, Chairman Orun, Julian no longer commits indiscriminate acts or tarnishes the family’s honor like in the past…”

“Herand!”

Startled by Orun’s thunderous voice, Herand flinched. Joshua, standing nearby, also jumped.

“I never intended to solve this with words, but I can no longer tolerate your behavior!”

Orun’s eyes blazed with fury.

“Herand, I will now commence the ‘Examination of Advancement.’ Follow me to the training ground immediately!”

***

The ‘Examination of Advancement.’

In the past, when Orun Crypart was the head of the family, this test was a form of training to find the family’s legitimate successor through a duel.

Although Orun no longer had the authority to conduct this test, no one could stop him.

Even Oben, the current head, wouldn’t be able to stop Orun now.

Strictly speaking, it was a grandfather disciplining his grandson for tarnishing the family’s honor.

Joshua sensed that this was not a simple ‘test’ but a ‘warning’ and ‘discipline.’

Discipline that involved broken bones and torn flesh.

Thwack! Thud!

“Ugh…”

Herand’s groans of agony filled the training ground.

“Get up.”

Orun’s eyes remained cold as he watched Herand endure the pain on the ground.

Before becoming the head of the family, Orun was a knight with a reputation equivalent to a ‘Sword Saint.’

He was also a great general who left his mark on the history of the northern front and an excellent swordsman whose body hadn’t significantly weakened despite the ravages of time.

“Cough, cough…”

“I told you to get up!”

Thud!

As Orun’s kick landed on Herand’s solar plexus, the sound of air escaping his lungs echoed.

Seeing Herand cough up blood, Joshua couldn’t help but close his eyes.

Despite inheriting the Crypart family’s robust physique, Herand’s weak spirit and lack of sword training meant his body couldn’t withstand Orun’s assaults.

‘Brother Herand…’

The test was conducted with a blunt wooden sword, not a sharp real sword, but even a wooden sword could kill.

Moreover, since Herand couldn’t use ‘Aura,’ each strike from the wooden sword was even more lethal.

“I told you to get up!”

Thud!

Orun swung the wooden sword mercilessly at Herand.

‘I have to stop this.’

Seeing Herand coughing up blood, Joshua couldn’t bear to watch any longer.

He tried to intervene to stop his brother’s suffering, but…

‘Ugh.’

‘Ugh.’

His feet wouldn’t move easily.

The central power of the Crypart family.

In fact, Orun wielded more power than their father.

‘Denying such a grandfather…’

It was like turning his back on the family’s protection.

Conflicting emotions battled within him as he heard Orun’s voice.

“Herand, I’ve never liked your pathetic demeanor. You’re too scared to even hold a sword and you can’t socialize properly with other nobles, you idiot!”

Joshua bit his lip hard.

“The first and second sons may not be suitable as the head of the family, but they were never as incompetent as you!”

Orun, who had been unleashing violence like a storm, looked down at Herand, who lay groaning on the ground.

“Well, have you changed your mind now? Do you still think we should strip Julian of the ‘Frason’ title?”

Violence was used to extract the desired answer.

How could this be called a ‘test’?

Yet, Joshua kept his mouth shut.

‘Brother Herand, you just need to say one word.’

Just say no.

“Oh, Chairman Orun…”

Trembling, Herand finally managed to speak.

His battered body was soaked with blood and sweat, and it was hard to find a spot that wasn’t bruised.

‘Just say it, brother.’

Say that Julian is still a tumor of the family.

“I, I still remember the day Lady Milena was buried…”

Contrary to Joshua’s expectations, Herand continued with a trembling voice.

Despite his body being on the verge of breaking, his voice and eyes held more strength than Joshua had ever seen.

“You made him dig the grave with those small hands and made him put Lady Milena in the coffin all by himself, didn’t you?!”

“Who would want to see or touch a barbarian from the north?!”

“She was not a barbarian; she was a citizen of the Empire… She just came from the north…”

Cough, cough.

A heavy silence fell over the training ground.

Orun’s guards, the mansion’s servants, and even Joshua sensed it.

Something terrible was going to happen.

“I was willing to let it go, but now I have no choice.”

The veins in Orun’s hand holding the wooden sword bulged.

At the same time, a bluish aura began to emanate from the tip of the sword.

Though faint, aura began to envelop the sword.

“G-Grandfather! How about stopping now?”

Joshua shouted instinctively, but Orun’s steps towards Herand didn’t halt.

‘I must stop this somehow.’

If he left it like this, he knew he would regret it, but his legs wouldn’t move.

Orun’s imposing presence was like a towering mountain; trying to stop him would only result in being swept away.

“Maybe if one of your arms or legs becomes useless, you’ll come to your senses…”

“Arrgh!”

At that moment, a scream from outside drew everyone’s attention.

“What is it?” Orun was the first to voice his curiosity.

Before the surrounding servants could check, the entrance to the training ground began to open.

Step, step.

An uninvited guest entered.

A man with a human face but a beastly heart.

A notorious figure who, despite the derogatory nicknames that sullied his name, exuded an air of dignity as he looked around.

“It seems I have arrived to see Brother Herand, but there were others here first.”

The man with squinting eyes quietly smiled and murmured.

His face bore a small smile.

That smile held…

Elegance and character.

Authority and order.

Prioritizing these values, he wore the ‘Frason’ label like a badge, mocking the seemingly virtuous Crypart family.

***

‘What on earth is going on?’

Seeing Herand rolling on the floor, beaten to a pulp, I couldn’t help but look troubled.

Something felt off.

As I was on my way to see Brother Herand in the training ground, a guard blocking the entrance had stopped me.

Usually, they wouldn’t react so sensitively.

‘Should I have not forced my way in?’

Knowing this, I should have just left when they told me to go back.

But it was too late now.

I had to resolve this, as ‘Julian’ would.

A tense silence settled over the training ground.

When I realized that everyone’s eyes were on me, I felt a pang of regret.

I should have come earlier or much later.

“Do you know where you are, you trash, showing your face here?”

Breaking the uneasy silence was a knight inside the training ground.

He didn’t seem to be one of the family’s knights but rather someone’s guard, approaching me with a clear look of discomfort.

‘Is he with the knight order? He seems skilled.’

Sensing the unusual atmosphere in the training ground, I decided to leave quickly.

But I knew I couldn’t leave without making an impact.

There were too many eyes watching, including Joshua.

Although I had leverage over him, I didn’t want to create a situation that disrupted the hierarchy.

‘If that knight comes closer and says something, I can pretend to leave reluctantly.’

Just as I was finishing that thought, the knight spoke.

“Get out of here at once. This is no place for someone like you…”

The knight didn’t stop with words but reached out his right hand to shove me.

Watching this unfold, I sensed something unusual was happening.

<Sombra> responds to hostility.

It counterattacks to protect your body.

Even though I hadn’t commanded it, ‘Sombra’ was ready to attack the approaching knight.

‘Damn it! Why is this happening!?’

Weakened by lingering thoughts and residual energy in the underground waterway, ‘Sombra’ was hypersensitive to hostility directed at me.

It couldn’t afford to become weak again, so, fortunately, it didn’t explode with its usual speed since it hadn’t fully healed yet, but if left unchecked, its true nature would be revealed in front of so many onlookers.

‘If that happens…’

The true identity of the Black Knight would be exposed as ‘me.’

That cannot happen.

I still have much to do.

Thinking quickly, I twisted the knight’s outstretched arm.

Crack.

“Argh!”

Caught off guard by the sudden move, the knight was easily subdued, but he quickly prepared to draw his sword with his other hand.

‘Not a chance!’

I kicked him, sending his scabbard flying from his body to the ground.

Then, to prevent any further actions, I pulled him close and choked him.

“Gah, gah…”

He struggled, choking for air.

It was a natural reaction to avoid suffocation, but ‘Sombra’ perceived it as resistance.

It was still poised to attack.

‘Damn it…’

At this point, there was no choice.

I drew the sword from its scabbard and aimed it at the knight’s neck. Only then did the struggling knight finally calm down.

The intense energy coursing through my body also subsided.

‘Good.’

It seemed ‘Sombra’ had finally relaxed.

“…What… what are you trying to do?”

Confused gazes from those around me pierced through.

From Orun to Joshua, everyone except the low-ranking servants was staring at me like that.

Why? Was subduing this knight such a shocking event?

I squinted my already narrow eyes further and glanced around before turning my gaze back to the captured knight.

‘Huh? He looks familiar…’

The emblem on his shoulder armor looked familiar.

It was the symbol of the ‘Godrich’ family, one of the four great families of the Empire, just like the Crypart family.

Huh? Huh?

Names from the Godrich family started flashing through my mind.

From a warrior comparable to a Sword Saint to several at Julian’s level.

Given the nature of the four great families that hold honor in high regard…

‘If it’s known that I threatened the life of a Godrich family knight…’

I’m screwed.

Ding!

“Hm? Ah! A photo has arrived.”

“What is it?”

Leaving the excited team members who had successfully completed the interview behind, Lee Seon-ah checked her message.

Before Kyu-seong left, Seon-ah had asked him to send her the photos and videos he took with Ara.

“…Amazing.”

Seeing the huge pile of photos and videos, Seon-ah started feeling a rush of dopamine.

“He took so many and kept quiet about it all this time?”

“What is it? Let me see.”

Seon-ah’s friend peeked over her shoulder at her grumbling.

Seeing the countless photos of Ara, her friend’s eyes widened.

“Wow, is that the girl from earlier?”

“Yeah.”

“She looks like she’s in a photo shoot. Where is this?”

“I know, right.”

Most of the photos and videos Kyu-seong sent were taken in the Dungeon of Gluttony, so the background was fantastical.

The photos of Ara, taken against a beautiful backdrop, made anyone who saw them feel happy.

“What’s with this bear? Oh, and that’s a slime.”

“I don’t know.”

Pretending not to know, Seon-ah realized that the bear in the photos was the teddy bear Ara brought home last time.

‘It wasn’t a doll?’

She had been completely fooled before, but seeing the photos and videos, it was clear it wasn’t a doll.

“Ugh.”

She couldn’t forgive Kyu-seong for enjoying this cuteness alone.

Seon-ah clenched her fists, making a resolution.

Ara’s cuteness shouldn’t be known only to their group.

Cuteness will save the world.

Seon-ah genuinely believed that.

“Alright.”

“Huh?”

“I’m going to make a vlog.”

“A vlog?”

“Yeah. I’m going to closely document Ara’s daily life. Then, I’ll let the whole world know about her cuteness!”

“…”

Seon-ah’s friend shook her head, thinking, ‘Here she goes again,’ as Seon-ah started talking nonsense.

“I’ll start with the photos and videos I just got. Then I’ll take photos myself… Oh, I’ll need a camera for that. Or maybe I can just use my phone?”

As Seon-ah started mumbling to herself, the team members began to slowly distance themselves from her, moving naturally as if they were used to it.

“Seon-ah is really something. We just saw and interviewed those famous awakened ones, and now she doesn’t even care.”

“My heart is still pounding. Did you see that? It’s going wild online too.”

“Hey, hey. I already got a text from the professor. Asking if it’s true. Haha.”

It seemed like the whole school had heard the news, as people kept staring whenever Seon-ah’s team passed by.

Anyone who recognized them tried to strike up a conversation to ask about the interview.

But Seon-ah, the person who initiated all of this, was distracted, so the team members’ reactions were understandable.

“Oh, it’s the professor.”

“He’s coming out quickly.”

“The interview is already over…”

Leaving the murmurs of the team members behind, Lee Seon-ah was still lost in her own world, busy planning.

“First, I need to create a blog… No, maybe it’s better to just upload it to my YouTube channel? Then, should I edit the photos separately? I need to get permission from my brother too.”

* * *

“You are registered. By the way, your familiar is really unique. Oh, so cute.”

Thanks to Hanul and Jeong So-yeon, who came along to help, I was able to quickly complete the familiar registration at the Government Awakened Management Department.

Ara was happily sucking on a lollipop given by a government employee and receiving compliments.

“I am, lick, cute.”

Ara’s serious expression while licking the lollipop in her hand was comical.

However, this made her even more captivating, as everyone, from the passing employees to the one who handed her the lollipop, couldn’t take their eyes off her.

“Kyu-seong, you are truly blessed.”

“Haha…”

Even Jeong So-yeon looked at me with a face full of envy, leaving me speechless. It was true, after all.

“Anyway, I’m glad it went well. Thank you both for your help.”

“Haha! For Kyu-seong and Ara, this is nothing! Besides, we were on our way back to the guild anyway, so it worked out perfectly!”

“Oh, and I have something to give you both.”

At my words, Jeong So-yeon and Hanul couldn’t hide their excitement. I was glad because I had something worth their anticipation.

“It’s nothing ordinary. But I can’t give it to you here. Let’s move to a place without people.”

“Oh! It’s the first time Kyu-seong has spoken like this! If I get too excited and get disappointed, it’ll hurt even more.”

“You can look forward to it. This is something special that I can’t grow.”

“What? You can’t grow it? That actually makes me less excited.”

Hanul looked puzzled.

Well, my crops are usually quite extraordinary. But the World Tree Mushroom, even if it wasn’t one of my crops, had an exceptional flavor and aroma.

We said goodbye to the staff of the Management Department and headed to the guild. Since Hanul had driven his car, we arrived quickly.

“I’ll give it to you here.”

“In the car?”

“Yes. Oh, do you mind if it smells inside the car?”

“I don’t mind.”

With Hanul’s permission, I took out the mushroom entrusted to Bokkeum. Even though it was in a container, the moment I took it out of the bag, the aroma started to spread.

“What is this…?!”

“Wow, what is this smell?”

The reactions I had hoped for came, and I carefully opened the container. Inside were two halves of the World Tree Mushroom.

The rich scent of the mushroom filled the air. Before we knew it, Ara, Hanul, So-yeon, and I were all trying hard to swallow our saliva.

“Sniff. This is a new mushroom I discovered. But it’s not an ordinary mushroom.”

“Gulp. It definitely doesn’t look ordinary.”

“I can feel a strong mana presence.”

As expected from high-level Awakened ones, they immediately sensed the mushroom’s effects. They were amazed.

“Mana recovery?!”

“This is unbelievable!”

Hehe. Their reaction was justified.

Mana recovery items have existed before. However, they were extremely rare and only found in potion form.

Finding a complete potion means it can only be obtained from treasure chests inside dungeons. Since treasure chests are hard to find, such potions are never common.

“I’ll give you each a piece. I was lucky to find it.”

In truth, I harvested a whole basket full.

But it wasn’t a lie. Without Gomgom, I couldn’t have obtained these mushrooms, so I was indeed lucky.

“Is it okay to give us something so precious?”

For some reason, Hanul seemed to be overwhelmed. It was surprising, considering he usually charged ahead with an iron face.

“This is really quite burdensome. I just saw the name now—World Tree Mushroom? Where on earth did you find something like this?”

Jeong So-yeon also hesitated, looking as if she was afraid to touch it.

At that moment, Ara, who had been staring at the mushroom while drooling, whined.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong, I want to eat it.”

“Ahem.”

I had no choice.

I took out the extra cut mushroom from Bokkeum and gave it to Ara. Without any hesitation, Ara started eating the neatly cut mushroom.

“Mmm! It’s delicious!”

Watching Ara eat with satisfaction, Hanul and So-yeon were left speechless.

“Is it really okay to give that away so casually?”

“Haha…”

Enjoying their reactions, I nodded.

“No matter how precious it is, it’s not more important than our Ara. Besides, both of you are precious to me as well. Please, just accept it.”

“Wow, Kyu-seong, your heart is as vast as the ocean. I’ll gratefully accept it!”

With his large hand, Hanul picked up one piece of the mushroom.

Then, he took a small bite right there.

“Hmm?!”

The shock on his face was immense.

I was starting to worry about him.

“Brother, are you okay?”

“….”

Since Hanul couldn’t speak, So-yeon hesitantly picked up her portion of the mushroom.

“Thank you, Kyu-seong. I feel bad for always receiving.”

“Oh, it’s nothing. So-yeon, you’ve always helped me too. This is nothing.”

“Puhaha!!!”

Finally, Hanul came back to his senses.

When he opened his mouth, the mushroom scent, which was already filling the car, became even stronger.

“This is insane! It’s a culinary revolution! We have to tell everyone!”

“Brother, please calm down.”

I didn’t want to widely publicize the World Tree Mushroom since I had no way to grow it myself. I only wanted to share it with people I knew.

“And this! It says it restores a small amount of mana, but it holds much more mana than I expected! It’s incredible!”

“Is it that much?”

So-yeon tilted her head in curiosity.

She then carefully nibbled on a small corner of her mushroom.

“Mm!!”

Her reaction was similar to Hanul’s.

Seeing them bicker and get along, I realized there was a reason they got along so well.

“Hmm. I know it’s a lot, but it’s still a shame. I’d like to send it to the research department…”

“Oh! Don’t worry about that. I brought separate samples for the research department. I also brought some for the guild master.”

“You really think of everything, Kyu-seong!”

Haha. Isn’t that obvious?

It seemed the mushroom had overwhelmed their brains. Seeing their more intense reactions compared to mine, I gained a certain confidence.

‘Indeed, those who have experienced a lot of gourmet food can appreciate it more.’

Just as even the finest wine tastes bitter to someone who doesn’t drink much or enjoy it, it seemed the same applied to gourmet food.

Hanul and So-yeon likely experienced more diverse tastes and aromas from this mushroom than I did.

“Kyu-seong.”

“Yes, Brother.”

“Could I ask for a favor?”

“Oh, what is it?”

Today, Hanul seemed unusually cautious.

“Well… this might be an odd question, but can you grow beans?”

“Beans?”

I wondered why he was asking about beans all of a sudden, but it was possible.

“Of course. I haven’t planted them yet, but I can.”

“Oh, could you please grow some then? I know it’s a bit much to keep asking you to plant this and that, but I really want to get some beans.”

“It’s no problem. Farming is my job, after all. It’s no big deal.”

But Hanul’s request seemed a bit strange. Normally, he would say he wanted to try something, but this time he said he wanted to get some.

‘Is there a reason?’

First, I needed to know what kind of beans.

“There are many types of beans. Does any kind work?”

“Soybeans, please. You know, the ones used to make meju?”

“Ah, for doenjang?”

“Yes, the beans used to make doenjang.”

“Are you going to make doenjang?”

“Well, I’m not sure.”

His answer was vague. Is something going on?

Anyway, I was interested as well. After all, I had already planted peppers in the Dungeon of Gluttony. Naturally, the next step would be soybeans.

As a Korean, isn’t doenjang and gochujang essential?

“I’ll plant them as soon as I get back today.”

“Thank you, brother.”

Now I’m curious too.

What will Korean food made from the beans and peppers I harvest taste like?

Grout looked at Hyun-soo. Hyun-soo’s condition was serious. Due to a severe status ailment, he could barely stand, and his face was covered in blood. However, his eyes were still determined, full of fighting spirit. Grout wondered if Hyun-soo had some secret move up his sleeve, because he said:

“You’ve lost.”

Just like the most powerful blow from before, Hyun-soo shouted, “Friend, help me!”

“…?”

Could it be that this human had hit his head? Grout was especially baffled by what happened next.

Chirp, chirp-

Nothing happened.

[Summoning failed.]

Grout chuckled.

“What is that ridiculous name? Are you trying to play a joke on me?”

What amused Grout the most was that the summoning had ultimately failed. However, Hyun-soo continued to look at Grout with unwavering eyes.

[Temporary skill creation complete.]

[You have acquired the skill “Friend, Help Me (3).”]

(Friend, Help Me)

Active Skill

Grade: Unique

Level: None

– You can request help from those with whom you have a strong bond.

– If they approve, they will be summoned.

– If the approved ones are users, they will receive a -1 level penalty.

– If the approved ones are NPCs, they may experience severe mental exhaustion and may faint for a day.

– A maximum of 5 friends can be summoned.

– Summoned friends can stay for 5 minutes.

– Depending on the level of the crisis, a dramatic notification may be sent to them. Be cautious(?).

Hyun-soo was inspired by the skill being created called “Connection.” However, there was a reason why Hyun-soo did not waver.

‘Because I believe in the path I’ve walked.’

But just as Grout laughed at him, Hyun-soo heard the same notification again.

[Summoning failed.]

A small doubt sprouted in his mind, wondering if his path had not been so great after all. However, he soon brushed off that doubt. He was confident that he had walked a righteous and straightforward path.

‘But what is that?’

Hyun-soo, who was not good at naming things, decided on the skill he would create and left the rest to the system. But in the skill description, there was this line:

‘Depending on the level of the crisis, a dramatic notification may be sent to them. Be cautious(?).’

What did this mean? Hyun-soo didn’t understand.

At that moment, he received a notification.

[……Error.]

Seeing the notification, Hyun-soo’s heart burned with pride. It was proof of the path he had walked.

***

A few minutes earlier, a beautiful woman with silver short hair stood on the stage of a soldier training ground. Looking at the thousands of soldiers in training, she had recently become the commander of the Goyard Kingdom.

The second sword king candidate.

The Goyard Kingdom’s finest talent.

A knight beloved by the king.

She had many accolades.

After the former 1st Knight Commander, Benson, was appointed the Supreme Commander of Goyard Kingdom, Bella’s rise to the position of commander was dazzling. NPCs also steadily grow along with users. This was due to the high degree of freedom in the game, and also to prevent the gap between users and NPCs from widening.

[Knight Commander Bella Lv.401]

She was exceptionally strong, far surpassing ordinary NPCs. After receiving a new life from one person, she had worked harder than anyone else. The reason was to protect that person better. Bella looked at her arm and smiled slightly. Her once gaunt body now had proper muscles, and her eyes were clear.

At that moment, Bella saw a portal suddenly appear in front of her.

“What is this…?”

She was confused. And then, a notification, which an NPC like her shouldn’t hear, came.

[This is an extreme crisis situation.]

[Friend, Help Me!]

[A dramatic notification has been sent to them.]

Bella, who walked up to the portal, soon widened her eyes.

[Friend Hyun-soo is in mortal danger.]

[Friend Hyun-soo is in pain.]

[Friend Hyun-soo’s life is slipping away.]

[Friend requests your help.]

Bella’s eyes widened. Of course, the content of the notifications was true. Hyun-soo was currently in severe pain and was indeed on the brink of death. However, this was exaggerated by the skill. Seeing the extreme situation, Bella gritted her teeth.

Clench—

My benefactor.

My second sun.

[You will receive a penalty if you cross the portal.]

That warning did not reach Bella’s ears.

‘How dare someone…’

Goyard’s second strongest person crossed the portal.

At that moment, in the Kingdom of Praham, one of the most powerful NPCs on the current Korean server, one of the ten legends, and a king of a nation, was there. Recently, King Spear Heaven Ben had been causing a wind of change. A once aloof and powerful king, who did not communicate with his people and was known as a grumpy old man, now had countless children in front of him.

It was during the “Ask the King” event, which Ben personally hosted, where children from both commoner and noble backgrounds were present. Ben held a cute little girl and read her a storybook.

‘This isn’t… so bad…’

The change in Ben was due to a friend. That friend had said:

‘Don’t make yourself so lonely.’

Who would dare say such a thing to Spear Heaven Ben? Only a close friend who could converse without reserve could say such things. Because of this friend, Ben’s life was changing.

He was still an irritable king, but he was gradually getting closer to his people, alleviating his loneliness. Yes, the once lonely old man’s castle started to fill with people and laughter.

At that moment, the child in his arms asked, “Grandpa Spear Heaven, do you have something you cherish?”

“…I do,” Ben replied with a small smile.

Although still small and shabby, he cherished Spear Heaven. But Spear Heaven was a stern person. He did not coddle him nor give him everything. Surprisingly, this too was something Hyun-soo had said.

“Giving everything isn’t what a friend does, is it?”

With a chuckle, Ben gave the child in his arms an embarrassed smile. Then, the most precious person to him.

[Friend Hyun-soo is in mortal danger.]

[Friend Hyun-soo is in pain.]

Ben heard the message he sent. He remained calm. Gently putting down the child in his arms, he handed her a strawberry from the bowl in front of them. Patting her head, Ben smiled slightly. Then, he took the spear his friend had made for him and walked forward.

[You will receive a penalty…]

That warning did not reach his ears. He had received much more than that.

“Just this once, Hyun-soo.”

There were many things he wanted to repay him for. But this once would be enough. The greatest spearman crossed the portal.

Elsewhere, at the tomb of the Sword King family in the Goyard Kingdom, a man with a robust build, praised as the Sword King of generations, stood.

[My son, Ban. Rest here.]

Looking at the tombstone, he muttered to himself, “It’s okay. This father is not lonely these days.”

His son, lost at the tomb of Ifrit. A life plunged into despair. The sorrow and pain swallowed behind the title of king. He had wanted to die after avenging his son, but the man who survived laughed.

“There is a child who resembles you. Though still lacking, he is endlessly growing. I hope that child will take my place instead of you. Haha, what? You’ve already seen him?”

Talking to himself, he felt joyful. He looked at the withering chrysanthemum placed beside the tombstone. He hadn’t brought it.

“I have made a good friend. He asked me where your grave was. He said he’s never seen this father smile so brightly.”

Barad is a king. It was hard for him to warmly smile at anyone and even harder to open up. But in front of his son’s grave, he was just a father.

“…Yes, I am happy these days.”

He brushed the tombstone. “Don’t worry, your dad. He’s a stubborn man with rigid principles. He won’t coddle him, just wait. And when that boy reaches here,” he hesitated before saying, “I will give him my place.”

Swoosh—

The wind fluttered his cloak, bearing the kingdom’s emblem.

At that moment.

[Friend Hyun-soo is in mortal danger.]

[Friend Hyun-soo is in pain.]

He heard the notification as well.

Barad, looking at the tombstone, turned around.

“I must go now. What? Did I just contradict what I said earlier?”

Barad chuckled.

“That rascal Hyun-soo saved me at the border not long ago. He came running to save his friend.”

It wasn’t through physical strength.

“This time only. Just this once, I’ll fight for my friend.”

Swish.

The Sword King drew his sword from his waist and walked toward the portal. His face was twisted with anger.

Meanwhile…

“It seems certain he’s in an area where whispers can’t reach.”

“It feels like something serious has happened. What could it be?”

The members of Guild Bright Future, except for Nel, had gathered in the lord’s castle of Ballas Estate. They sensed that something had happened to Hyun-soo because their whispers weren’t reaching him.

At that moment:

[Friend Hyun-soo is in mortal danger.]

[Friend Hyun-soo is in pain.]

They heard the notification.

The first to rise was Bark, the growing one. Bark, one of the best tanks in Ares and also the top real estate tycoon in the country. Following him, Lisel stood up. The youngest in a conglomerate family and ranked 21st nationally with a molten sword.

Clench—

Saint Belia did the same, nodding with a resolute expression, while Ian grabbed the bow on his back.

Then three others, Tae-hoon, Han-ul, and Hye-ji, looked at the portal.

Just as they were about to step forward, they stopped. A person came to their minds: Nel.

They had come during a short break and were doing their best to develop Ballas Estate. Such a mass movement of forces would be detrimental to Ballas Estate. Nel was the most cold and analytical person. Furthermore, Hyun-soo’s death as a user was just a forced logout in the game.

When thinking calmly, it was likely that Nel would not allow everyone to move for the forced logout of one user. She was strict and smart enough for that.

At that moment, the door opened, and Nel entered.

“…What are you all doing?”

Nel asked, looking at those who had stood up.

“Why haven’t you crossed the portal yet? Go save Hyun-soo right now!”

Rush—

Nel was the first to cross the portal.

“…?”

They had forgotten. Hyun-soo was also precious to Nel.

Friend, Help Me.

Under the trivial and insignificant name, that notification reached those he had passed by. It was just a unique skill. The truth was, it wasn’t powerful enough to capture a demon. Moreover, Ares’ balance was strict. Those who responded to the friend’s summon would receive penalties. NPCs would faint after returning, and users would lose levels.

Moreover, summoning an ‘ordinary friend’ is not such an extraordinary power. It’s just that the friends he made were particularly special.

***

[Summoning failed.]

Grout laughed for a long time as he continued to hear that sound. The unyielding mental strength. The eyes that never lost their fire. The pride that would not give up on Arte. Grout wanted to crush him.

“Humans believe they are incredibly special beings. You are no different.”

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Grout clicked his tongue.

“So, this is the path you’ve walked, unwavering. Why did you come this far?”

He asked why he had come this far. In response, Hyun-soo spat out the blood in his mouth. His vision was slowly returning. There was a notification in front of him that Grout could not see.

[Summoning failed.]

Hyun-soo smiled.

[An error has occurred.]

The notification changed and updated.

[Too many responses received.]

[Summoning will take some time.]

[Current progress: 13%… 32%… 58%…]

He was no longer afraid. He knew who would come and with what intentions.

[Summoning 100% complete.]

Hyun-soo aimed his supreme sword at Grout.

[All friends are summoned.]

Simultaneously.

Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop—

The world’s strongest swordsman, a robust man, appeared by his side and placed a hand on his shoulder. An old man with his hands behind his back appeared, glaring at Grout as if he would kill him.

“Was it you? Are you the one who did this to my friend, Hyun-soo?”

A usually cold woman spoke with a worried expression.

“We’re here now, so don’t worry.”

They blocked the way in front of him. They guarded his left. They aimed their weapons from his right.

Looking at them, Hyun-soo smiled. The demon asked him,

“So, this is the path you’ve walked, unwavering. Why did you come this far?”

This is the proof.

Hyun-soo, seeing the bewildered demon with cold eyes, said,

“This is the path I’ve walked.”

Act 119

Prev I TOC I Next

“What is the problem?”

Due to its very human-like demeanor, I started treating ‘Sombra’ like a person. It slithered out of my body again and approached the soul stone of ‘Idel’ once more. Its desperate attempt to eat it was pitiful.

Thunk, roll,

The soul stone popped out of Sombra and ended up in the corner of the office. Did it really look like it spat it out disdainfully, or was that just my imagination?

“This is absurd.”

Sombra still couldn’t maintain its shape. The words “I’m doing this for your own good” almost escaped my lips, but I decided against it. After all, I wasn’t its parent. However, if I couldn’t use ‘Sombra,’ it would disrupt my future plans. It was my weapon, my shield, and the mask that concealed my identity.

“If it won’t eat the soul stone, what should I do… Hmm?”

As I turned my head absentmindedly, I noticed the soul stone of Idel that Sombra had spit out. The stone, which emanated a sinister aura, seemed to be stirring up even more demonic energy after passing through Sombra’s mouth.

“What the…”

I was slightly taken aback by the unusual reaction. As I approached, the ominous energy began to intensify. It wasn’t beyond my control, though. The ‘demonic energy’ was manageable thanks to the <Demon Lord’s Vessel> trait. When I picked it up, a more intense vibration resonated.

“It’s rejecting me.”

I instinctively understood that this soul stone was repelling me, or more accurately, ‘Julian.’ If it were an ordinary soul stone, I would have questioned why, but this was ‘Idel Hyrans’s’ soul stone. Being a survivor of a family destroyed by Julian’s hand, it was naturally filled with strong resentment.

‘Is the experience accumulated in life still influencing the soul stone?’

What a ridiculous notion.

‘Vengeance… even if not alive, then in death.’

Is that what this is about?

‘If it had such strong resentment, it wouldn’t have ended up as a small stone in my hands in the first place.’

My monologue was pointless. However, I couldn’t help but mock Idel’s soul, which couldn’t let go of its desire for vengeance even after becoming a stone. This was both my thought and Julian’s. The only difference was our approach. I sought methods other than becoming a demon, while Julian’s sinister nature led him to belittle others.

“This must be why Sombra is rejecting it.”

I put the soul stone back. It was useless to me and could become a problem if someone else saw it. Though I lost the opportunity to use Idel’s soul stone, it was just a stone; there would be another use for it someday.

“So, where should I find it?”

Mumbling to myself, I reached for the watering can I had left on the office table. It was time to water the plants.

As I was watering the orchids, I paused at a familiar name.

‘Angelica’

The one with particularly beautiful colors that grew well. I still couldn’t bring myself to throw away its name tag. Seeing the empty spot where the plant, which couldn’t be saved due to severely damaged roots, used to be, a bitter taste filled my mouth.

“Come to think of it…”

Angelica had died because of Joshua’s foolish actions.

To be precise, it was the wizard who invaded with him that caused it. Damn bastards. Anyway, I need to find a soul stone to heal Sombra.

‘Ah! The Crypart family has one.’

It was a keepsake from Julian’s mother, Milena. Although it’s currently entrusted to Herand, the third son of the Crypart family, the ownership of that item belongs to me. Since Idel’s soul stone is rejecting me, I should use that one instead. I decided to arrange a meeting with Herand as soon as possible.

Knock, knock!

As I continued to water the orchids, I turned my head at the sound of knocking. When I told them to come in, a familiar face entered. It was Razlot, a member of the Dawn Society and an apprentice of the ‘Closed Eye.’

“What is the current atmosphere in the royal palace?”

I called him to get a brief understanding of the internal situation of the palace. Aiden’s death wasn’t widely reported and was registered as missing, so I knew the palace had started an investigation accordingly.

“In the process, a brief hint of Sir Aiden’s human experiments was discovered, and it seems the Magic Tower is also cooperating in the investigation.”

“Mm.”

I let out a short groan. To have Aiden’s disappearance reported and the illegal experiments discovered so quickly… It seems Aileen has made her move. It would have been better if she had kept her mouth shut. Her stubbornness will only lead to unnecessary trouble.

“The Donnasiens must be in a tough spot too. To have the head of the family involved in such matters, and now he’s missing. What a headache.”

When I let out a short laugh, Razlot’s face turned into a strange expression, unable to laugh or cry, with the color of ‘fear’ swirling above his head.

“Y-Yes, indeed.”

“But Razlot, there’s something I’m curious about.”

“Yes, feel free to ask.”

“I’ve heard that the ‘Closed Eyes’ has been tailing the Dawn Society recently. Is that true?”

“Ah…”

Razlot let out a short sigh.

“I heard it secondhand, but it’s a bit suspicious that I, as a member of the ‘Closed Eyes,’ am unaware of it.”

This is a very important issue. ‘Julian’ is the figurehead of the ‘Closed Eye,’ yet they are investigating the Dawn Society without reporting anything to me? I must also consider the possibility that the palace suspects me as part of the Dawn Society and has excluded me from the investigation.

“Actually, there is an investigation, but it’s not that extensive, so I guess Captain Godwin didn’t mention it.”

Hmm, I see. Although I’m the ‘face’ of the organization, Godwin Balladir is still the captain of the ‘Closed Eye.’

“Besides, the Dawn Society is not an organization that’s widely known.”

“Madmen who dream of the resurrection of the Demon God, they deserve to be ostracized.”

At my harsh criticism, Razlot gave an awkward smile and looked away.

“By the way, who is the member in charge of investigating the Dawn Society?”

“Pardon?”

“I’m just curious.”

It’s good to know the name at least. I don’t intend to sell out the ‘Closed Eyes,’ but didn’t Archbishop Tenellon personally express doubts about who was involved in this matter?

“It’s Fern. The knight who was previously with the Azure Lion Knights.”

“Hmm…”

Fern, huh? That’s problematic. Since he has some reputation within the ‘Closed Eyes,’ the Dawn Society might have put surveillance on him too.

Well, he used to be a member of the Azure Lion Knights, so he do know a thing or two about protecting himself.

But even if he investigate the Dawn Society, how is he going to uncover the deep, dark secrets hidden within it?

There’s a risk to his safety since all kinds of nobles are involved.

For example, there’s no word about the Dawn Society being connected to the recent incident in Aiden.

This shows just how influential the Dawn Society is in the Empire.

“If Fern shows any strange behavior, please stop him.”

“Would someone from the Azure Lion Knights listen to an apprentice like me?”

“Then say it was my order.”

With that, Razlot nodded in agreement.

Even if he doesn’t listen to the apprentice, he’ll listen to me.

After all, I’m the superior officer.

‘When an order is given, they have to follow it.’

It’s a saying knights love.

***

Reflecting on what had happened with Korund, Joshua fell into deep thought.

‘To think that Mr. Korund would have such a strong reaction… Although I don’t know the exact cause, I have a rough idea.’

It was when the name ‘Julian’ was mentioned that he reacted that way.

No matter how much Korund covets the support of the Crypart family and the backing of the noble council, it can’t compare to the infamy of that heartless man.

As Joshua walked down the mansion’s corridor, he peeked into the drawing room, attracted by the commotion.

“Brother Euphat, just how much did you drink last night?”

“Ugh… Shut up and bring me some water.”

Inside, Euphat, the second eldest, was suffering from a hangover and conversing with the third brother, Herand.

“What an idiot,” Joshua thought as he clicked his tongue at Euphat and saw Herand’s troubled face before heading back to his room.

‘Damn it, why does Brother Herand always defend that guy?’

The more Joshua thought about it, the more he resented Herand, who had defended Julian at the previous family meeting.

Herand, the third son, was never mentioned as a candidate for the head of the family and didn’t even show much interest in the position.

Despite this, Joshua had treated him with respect as his elder brother, but all he got in return was Herand’s support for Julian.

“Ugh… whatever.”

Joshua wanted to curse to release the frustration in his heart but sighed instead, remembering Orun’s order to refrain from using vulgar language as a future successor of the family.

Even though he wanted to, Joshua couldn’t speak ill of Herand.

After the eldest and second brothers strayed from the family, Herand had worked diligently as a member of the Crypart family.

Joshua couldn’t bring himself to criticize him, especially since he still remembered the sight of Orun, the grandfather, beating Herand while cursing him.

Herand was only trying to do his best for the family.

“Brother must have his reasons… right?”

Just then, Joshua noticed the mansion becoming busier.

He looked outside to assess the situation.

The Crypart family is one of the four great families.

Though they live a relatively modest lifestyle compared to the other great families, they still own an enormous mansion befitting their noble status.

If such a large mansion was bustling, it meant someone very important had arrived.

Quickly dressing, Joshua ran to the entrance.

Then, a carriage adorned with the emblem of the Crypart family in gold and bearing the mark of the “Noble Council” came into view.

Creak!

The door opened, and a stern, elderly gentleman with a stubborn look appeared. Joshua greeted him with a bright smile and a respectful bow.

“Grandfather Orun!”

He deliberately raised his voice a tone higher than usual. Knowing this always pleased his grandfather, he gave a sly smile.

“Oh, my dear puppy!”

The former head of the Crypart family, Orun, was getting out of the carriage.

As soon as he saw Joshua’s face, his stern expression began to melt into a broad smile.

“How did you know I was coming? I didn’t send any word ahead since it was a sudden visit!”

“Oh, do I really need to be told when you’re coming, Grandpa?”

“You rascal, listen to how you talk! Come here and give me a hug, my dear boy!”

“Oh, come on, I’m not a kid anymore.”

Joshua’s gentle refusal, accompanied by a small laugh, made the coachman and the servants tense up slightly. Orun was known for his authoritative nature within the family. Joshua knew this well but instead smiled even more and took a step further.

‘He allows a little challenge to his authority, but only from those he likes.’

Joshua wasn’t sure if Orun saw it as a challenge, but he played along with his grandfather’s personality.

“Ha ha ha, looks like my dear boy has grown up!”

‘Just as I thought.’

Joshua smiled inwardly. His strategy had worked.

“But, where are the others? Only my youngest, Joshua, is here to greet me?”

“Euphat and Herand are here, but…”

“Those useless bastards.”

Orun’s tone instantly turned cold, unlike when he was speaking to Joshua, making him flinch.

“Anyway, Herand is inside, right?”

“Yes.” Joshua was about to answer but hesitated when he saw Orun’s eyes.

A spark that looked ready to explode was flickering in Orun’s eyes. Joshua instinctively sensed it.

“Uh, umm…”

A peculiar sense of unease crept over him, making him think, ‘Something might happen to Brother Herand today.’

“I just returned from finishing my business at the academy, so I’m not really sure. I don’t get along very well with my brothers.”

Joshua lied because of this uneasy feeling.

Round 71

The sweet scent of sweet potatoes gently filled the air.

Unlike regular sweet potatoes, the delicious sweet potato candy made from magical sweet potatoes had an unmistakable luxurious sweetness.

“Wow, what is this smell?”

“I can’t stop drooling.”

Seeing people’s reactions, I internally apologized for unintentionally causing a biochemical attack.

‘If I take out the World Tree mushrooms, it’ll cause a commotion.’

This time, thanks to Gomgom and Ara, we harvested quite a lot of mushrooms before leaving the dungeon.

I brought one as a gift, but it seemed too much to give it now.

“Brother Hanul, can we move to another place? There are too many people here.”

“Hm? Haha! It’s fine! It’s not uncomfortable at all, so just continue!”

No… I’m the one who’s uncomfortable.

Glancing at Jeong So-yeon, she was too engrossed in the sweet potatoes to hear me.

Well, there’s no other way.

I had to proceed while feeling all these eyes on me.

“Seon-ah, let’s start the interview.”

“Huh, now?”

“Yeah. They’re busy people, so they don’t have much time.”

“Oh, right. I’ll get ready.”

Seon-ah, having regained her composure, hurriedly urged the team. Despite the chaos, the interview began.

“Thank you for joining us today. We are from the Dungeon Monster Research Department of Korea University…”

The interview progressed quickly.

Other students who weren’t part of the interview also gathered around, watching with interest.

“Wow, you received scouting offers from other places! So, Ms. Jeong So-yeon, why did you choose Ara Hongryeon?”

“Because the conditions were good? Haha, just kidding. It’s because of connections.”

“Connections?”

“Yes. Someone I knew before I awakened is there. I’ve had a connection with the Ara Hongryeon Guild since middle school.”

“Oh, I see. That’s quite a story.”

Except for the record of being the youngest 6th rank awakened, there wasn’t much information about Jeong So-yeon.

Since she became a high-ranking awakened at a young age, she had been cautious, so little-known stories began to surface, causing even the awakened enthusiasts around us to perk up their ears.

Most of the formal interview questions were over, and now there were some personal questions when a student asked,

“I have a question for Mr. Kang Hanul.”

“Ask away.”

“Ask away!”

“Mr. Kang Hanul, as a first-generation awakened, do you have any plans to train a successor?”

“A successor?”

“What’s a successor?”

Hanul, who was eating the tomatoes I brought, suddenly looked at me.

“Hmm…”

“Hmm!”

“Haha, Brother, why are you looking at me like that?”

“My successor is this little one!”

“I am the successor!”

Everyone’s eyes widened at Hanul’s sudden declaration. Even Hanbyul Yu, who had been with us, widened his eyes.

Wait a minute.

Why are you lifting Ara and calling her your successor, brother?

Ara was lifted by Hanul, looking as bewildered as a baby lion from an anime.

“So cute…”

“But who is that kid? Why is she with Kang Hanul?”

“Could she be his daughter?”

As the murmurs continued, Hanul laughed heartily.

“Hahaha! Just kidding!”

“Ha! Ha! Ha! It’s a joke!”

“Um, Mr. Kang Hanul, is that child your daughter by any chance?”

With someone finally mustering the courage to ask, everyone’s attention focused back on him.

“Of course!”

“Of course!”

And then Hanul made another misleading statement.

“What are you saying! Ara is our child!”

“…Seon-ah….”

While I assumed it was another joke, Seon-ah, who was wrapping up the interview, shouted with fiery eyes.

Thanks to her, the confusion among the people intensified.

“Seon-ah? Why are you suddenly saying that?”

“Yeah, it’s not like Seon-ah to make such jokes….”

Seon-ah’s friends were flustered by her sudden behavior. It was a natural reaction for those who didn’t understand Hanul’s joke.

Finally, Jeong So-yeon sighed and put her hands on her hips.

“Team 2 Leader.”

“What?”

“Stop teasing people. Can’t you see you’re putting Kyu-seong in a tough spot?”

“Oh no! Kyu-seong, were you having a hard time? My bad!”

Brother….

At least look at me while you’re talking. If you keep anxiously eyeing the sweet potatoes, it makes me look bad.

It seemed like he was nervously rolling his eyes, afraid I might take the food away. Was this really the same great awakened being known as the predator?

“My dad is Kyu-seong!”

“Er, ahem.”

At that moment, Ara suddenly shouted, freeing herself from Hanul’s grip, and ran over to me.

I suddenly found myself perceived as a man with a child, but upon reflection, Ara was indeed like my child.

‘Not born from my body, though.’

Hanul, Jeong So-yeon, and Seon-ah, who knew Ara was a slime, smirked, but the rest looked at us with curiosity.

“There must be a complicated story.”

“No, just look at that girl. She has tiger ears.”

“Could she be an early awakener?”

The Ara Hongryeon Guild was already creating a separate identity for Ara. I heard it would be good to register her as a familiar with the government too, so it might be a good idea to do it while we’re out.

“Your daughter is very cute.”

“Huh? Oh, thank you.”

Suddenly, Hanbyul Yu approached and spoke.

She seemed genuinely interested in Ara, waving her hand and greeting her.

“Who are you?”

“Haha. Her speech is cute. Did your dad teach you that?”

It was the first time someone pointed out her speech.

Unfortunately, that way of speaking wasn’t taught by me.

“My way of speaking? It’s cool! It’s dignified!”

“Hahaha. Yes, yes. It’s very cool! What’s your name?”

“I am Ara!”

“Ara? What’s your surname?”

“What is a surname?”

Ara tilted her head and looked up at me.

“Our Ara’s surname is Lee. Lee Ara.”

“Lee Ara! I am Lee Ara! I had forgotten!”

Ara proudly puffed out her chest and spoke.

Hanbyul Yu laughed again.

“Can I hold her?”

“If Ara is okay with it.”

As Hanbyul extended her arms, Ara approached her without resistance and nestled into her embrace. It’s clear that our Ara is very affectionate.

Zing!

Hm? Suddenly feeling a chill, I turned to see Seon-ah and Jeong So-yeon glaring at Hanbyul.

I understand Seon-ah’s reaction since she loves Ara, but wasn’t Jeong So-yeon busy eating with Hanul?

‘…Well, it seems I’ve made an impression.’

I guess I’ve done my part as an older brother by giving Seon-ah some recognition.

* * *

“What’s this?”

Kim Yura, the guild master of Oseong Guild, was reading an online article and tilted her head in confusion.

“A surprise interview with Ara Hongryeon executives at Korea University? Isn’t that where Hanbyul went?”

Hearing her question, her secretary also looked puzzled.

“Exactly. Hanbyul mentioned she was going to do an interview as a favor for an acquaintance.”

“But wasn’t that interview just for a college project? Did the team leaders of Ara Hongryeon actually go for that?”

“Wasn’t it for a college project? Let me check.”

“No, it says here they visited for a college project. Seriously, what a surprise. Are they free these days?”

Kim Yura chuckled incredulously and continued to scrutinize the article. As expected, not just her, but many people were making a fuss about this.

The biggest topic was who could have mobilized such connections.

“Does Korea University have a relative of someone in Ara Hongryeon?”

At that moment, someone knocked on the door.

Knock, knock.

“It’s Hanbyul! I’m back!”

“Oh, Hanbyul. Perfect timing. Come in.”

“Huh?”

Hanbyul Yu entered with a puzzled expression.

“What’s up?”

“What’s up? I heard Ara Hongryeon executives were at Korea University?”

“Oh! That.”

Despite her initial excitement when she first saw Kang Hanul and Jeong So-yeon, Hanbyul now shrugged as if it was no big deal.

“They suddenly showed up. I even got their autographs. Ta-da!”

“…Good job, kid.”

“I’ve always admired Jeong So-yeon and the others. Of course, I respect you too, Guild Master.”

“Oh? You call her Jeong So-yeon now? You must be close.”

“Hehe.”

Hanbyul’s awkward smile was an unspoken confirmation of Kim Yura’s remark.

With that charming smile, Kim Yura could only shake her head in defeat.

“Sigh, fine. It’s not a big deal, but I am curious. Who called them?”

“Um, I think it was a student named Lee Seon-ah.”

“Lee Seon-ah? Never heard of her.”

“Oh, she’s related to the new recruit in Ara Hongryeon.”

“Huh? Oh! The one who’s been stuck at Level 1 for a while despite awakening some time ago? It was quite a stir when he joined Ara Hongryeon since they don’t just take anyone.”

“Yes. I believe he’s the one who asked. His sister is Lee Seon-ah.”

“What?”

Kim Yura thought she misheard but then chuckled.

“You must be mistaken. How could he mobilize those two? And for a mere college project.”

“What?! It’s true. Wait, that’s not even the important part!”

Hanbyul suddenly remembered something urgent.

“You know, that thing!”

“What thing?”

“Um, ah, that…”

Hanbyul Yu, who had suddenly faltered in her speech, brightened up as she remembered and shouted,

“Food items!”

“Oh, that?”

But why is she bringing that up now?

Feeling puzzled, Kim Yura quickly made a natural deduction.

“Could it be that the Level 1 awakened made those?”

“Huh? Oh, I’m not sure. But it probably is.”

“Why do you think so?”

“That awakened gave food to Kang Hanul and Jeong So-yeon like a tribute! You know the sweet potato candies we tried? They brought out other things too!”

“Oh, then it must be true. It’s that person.”

Two mysteries were solved at once.

There had been a lot of talk in the awakened community about food that displayed item properties. Finding out who owned those items also explained why Ara Hongryeon had recruited an awakened stuck at Level 1.

“Wow, even so, a Level 1 awakened having a 7th and a 6th rank awakened at their disposal is hilarious.”

“But they seemed to get along well. It didn’t feel like that Level 1 was bossing them around. It felt more like Kang Hanul and Jeong So-yeon were being nice to him.”

“Anyway, you’ve brought back some valuable information. Good job, kid.”

“Haha! Praise me more, Guild Master.”

Food items with buffs and various effects, and incredibly delicious too.

Kim Yura, the guild master of Oseong Guild, immediately began searching for Ara Hongryeon’s contact information.

[The final story begins.]

It was the notification Hyun-soo heard with the appearance of Grout. However, there was no time for Hyun-soo to check the detailed contents of the quest.

[Blood Demon Grout Lv.501]

Grout, who descended in his true form, was absurdly strong.

[Arte is dying.]

Arte was a sage, not a swordsman or knight. His physical strength was below that of ordinary magicians. Pushing off the ground, Hyun-soo recalled the notification he just heard.

Skill: Connection (因緣). He still didn’t know what power it held.

‘I thought I could escape.’

The speed of the Turtle Ship was bizarrely fast. It was a tough fight. At the end of this battle, Hyun-soo found inspiration through the skill Connection. Arte granted Hyun-soo three temporary skill creations.

‘With these three skills, I can create a similar skill.’

A gift from Arte.

[Starting skill creation.]

Hyun-soo immediately clashed with Grout.

***

[Status ailment Loss activated.]

[Status ailment Fear activated.]

Loss and fear.

Zzt, zzt—

Hyun-soo’s body intermittently trembled, but he soon calmed down.

[You have resisted.]

“Oh?”

Grout was surprised. The killing intent emitted with his appearance was strong enough to choke most humans to death instantly. The reason Hyun-soo could resist the status ailment, was it due to his unyielding will?

Of course, that played a part. But in addition to his unyielding will, he recently obtained a crown forged by God Blacksmith that increased status ailment resistance by 50%. Although Hyun-soo’s level was 320, status ailment resistance was extremely difficult to increase.

“I like your unyielding will.”

Grout was relaxed. The difference in power, rank, level, and experience… All these were the leisure of a superior being.

Hyun-soo pushed off the ground. As he advanced, Counter activated behind him. At the same time, the essence of the rampaging sword imbued him. Just like before, the once-weak Hyun-soo momentarily surpassed himself with the power of the supreme sword.

[Basic attack power of the sword increases by 221% with a 40% probability.]

[Lasts for 15 seconds.]

Although it increased by 221%, this sword could certainly shock Grout even if only for a moment.

“Ghost Step.”

A ghost steps, treading over fear.

Swish—!

Hyun-soo disappeared.

Once.

Boom—!

“…!?”

Twice.

Crash—!

Three times.

Four times.

Five times.

Hyun-soo, who was assaulting Grout from all directions, was surprised. Grout defended and counterattacked every aspect of Ghost Step, which moved by splitting 1.4 seconds.

Slash—!

[HP falls below 86%.]

With a single hit, he lost 14% of his HP. Even though it was a light attack.

Still, Hyun-soo walked.

Swish, swish, swish—!

Sixth, seventh.

Ninth.

Tenth.

Eleventh, twelfth.

Slash—

Hyun-soo managed to land only two successful hits. At the same time, Grout’s long fingers aimed at Hyun-soo’s chest.

Boom—!

A massive explosion of blood caused significant damage to Hyun-soo.

[Blood Explosion Chain]

The blood gushing from Hyun-soo’s body turned into tiny droplets. These droplets scattered around and struck Hyun-soo again.

Boom, boom, boom, boom—!

[HP has fallen below 74%.]

[HP has fallen below 61%.]

[HP has fallen below 54%.]

[HP has fallen below 46%.]

[You have been afflicted with Bleeding.]

“Argh!”

A proper attack had caused immense damage. Hyun-soo’s vision blurred on one side. Grout was an overwhelmingly strong opponent.

Grout found Hyun-soo intriguing. He was an exceptional blacksmith and possessed great strength. Furthermore, his unyielding spirit made Grout, as a demon, want to crush him.

Grout had already demonstrated this once.

“Even if you try a hundred times, you will die. Soon, Arte will die too.”

Arte’s HP was gradually decreasing.

“Why not just give up? We don’t care about Arte.”

Grout enjoyed taunting, especially when facing someone with a strong spirit like Hyun-soo. Demons are cruel, and humans are greedy.

“Ignore him, and come with me.”

Grout was a low-ranking demon, not even in the 72 Demon Hierarchy. However, if Hyun-soo made artifacts for him, things could change. He might even achieve his lifelong wish of becoming one of the 72 Pillars.

“If you want, I’ll give you money. Live in my castle, sometimes fight for me, and create for me.”

Grout’s true reason for descending was revealed. Though he harbored resentment and anger for being attacked, he saw the potential to gain a higher position through Hyun-soo.

“Now, bark for me. Like a dog that guards the house, wags its tail, and makes artifacts for me! I’ll feed you and give you generous treats! Come on, bark. Woof, woof, like a dog!”

Grout believed his offer was irresistible. When humans meet a superior being, they tend to bow in fear. It’s the same as bowing before a king.

Indeed, Hyun-soo’s lips were parting.

“Meow.”

“…?”

Grout’s face twisted grotesquely.

“You dare…!”

Hyun-soo wasn’t just making a joke.

Click—

The world’s switch goes off, and darkness descends.

[A moment of crisis.]

[Unyielding.]

[The effect of the Tiger Sword increases by 7%.]

Like the notification that always came, he was unwavering. The Counter (反) he used as he lunged forward was secretly enhanced, creating an artifact.

Swoosh—

He grasped a sword. With it, twenty-eight stars poured down.

The Tiger Sword. And then…

“Tiger Spirit.”

Roar—!

The roar that had killed the fifth calamity poured onto the recognized enemy as evil.

Hyun-soo knew.

“The reason you demons don’t descend into the mortal world.”

Weakening? No, even if weakened, they were absurdly strong. So why don’t they descend?

“Because you are extremely vulnerable to divine power.”

[Tiger Spirit]

[The immense power of divinity weakens you.]

[You are weakened.]

[Blood Demon Grout Lv.487]

[Blood Demon Grout Lv.475]

[Blood Demon Grout Lv.451]

[Blood Demon Grout Lv.430]

[You are stunned for 3 seconds.]

He knew. Even a weakened Grout was an opponent beyond his reach. Yet, he pushed off the ground.

Dash—!

There were two swords created. He grabbed the falling Tiger Sword as the first one dissipated.

At that moment…

[The special function of Counter activates with a 1% probability.]

[You can wield two swords simultaneously.]

Once again, the notification sounded.

[You have overcome the moment of crisis.]

[The sentence begins.]

The effect of the first title helps him overcome the current situation, granting strong power with each word.

[Even if it breaks]

[Increases skill attack power by 10%.]

[Never back down]

[Increases basic attack power of the sword by 10%.]

[By all means]

[Critical damage is doubled.]

As he ran, immense power surged through his body. The sentence-type title indicated that overcoming this crisis was through maximizing Hyun-soo’s power.

Hyun-soo cannot win against Grout, a demon in the 500-level range. But if Grout is weakened by the Tiger Sword’s essence, he can inflict massive damage.

[Blood Demon Grout Lv.430]

Grout sneered.

“Do you think a mere stun can have any meaning on me?”

But then…

Grout sensed something strange. The stun was not lifting.

[Win]

[Temporarily nullifies the enemy’s status ailment resistance.]

The power activated by his will gave Hyun-soo strength.

Roar—

A massive dragon struck Grout. Grout endured the impact.

Then, Hyun-soo unleashed the essence of his supreme sword.

[Eight Slashes]

One attack became eight slashes, with critical damage doubled by the effect of the first title. One slash became eight.

Swish—

[A critical hit occurred.]

[2x damage applied.]

[You inflicted 17,313 damage.]

[You inflicted 10,135 damage.]

[A critical hit occurred.]

[You inflicted 13,417 damage.]

[You inflicted damage…]

[You inflicted damage…]

He slashed madly. There was no time to stop. For three seconds, he gritted his teeth.

[Eight Slashes]

[Eight Slashes]

Swish, swish, swish—

Blood, blood, blood, boom, boom—

“Raaahhh!”

He did not want Arte to die. And he had a desire. When he encountered Grout, he had received such a notification:

[One of the strongest NPCs.]

[The one who hunts Grout can announce a world message.]

The world still doubted Hyun-soo, attaching all sorts of things to belittle him. He wanted to prove them wrong. To announce to the entire world. And to rise through it. As the owner of the best forge in the country.

Swish—

He focused on the green blood spraying everywhere. After three seconds passed, he finally regained his senses and was about to feel elation.

“…”

[Grout’s HP has fallen below 70%.]

Hyun-soo woke up. Grout, with his dull eyes and snake-like narrow pupils, was staring at him. Despite his full effort, Hyun-soo had only managed to reduce Grout’s HP by 30%.

“That’s not how you swing a sword.”

A sword made of blood formed in Grout’s hand. As he swung it up.

Boom—

[Blood Storm]

Crash—

[You possess Asnum.]

[HP has fallen below 10%.]

[HP recovers to 15%.]

Hyun-soo’s body was torn to shreds.

[Severe injury status ailment activated.]

[It is difficult to stand.]

Hyun-soo staggered, struggling to stand.

“…Shall I tear Arte’s limbs apart to shatter your iron will?”

It was Grout’s form of torture.

“Your eyes are still the same.”

No matter how much he tried to knock him down, Hyun-soo wouldn’t crumble. Grout grabbed Arte by the scruff and lifted him.

At that moment:

“You’ve lost.”

[Temporary skill creation complete.]

A plan that Hyun-soo had prepared was ready to be set in motion.

***

Special User Management Team.

Lee Ji-hee and Tae-seok were talking.

“Isn’t obtaining story completion percentages twice as hard as regular percentages?”

“That’s right, while you can get 2% from a regular quest, you only get 1% from a story completion.”

Achieving story completion percentages is significantly harder. But the rewards are correspondingly maximized.

“It’s not easy.”

“It can’t be…”

Lee Se-jin watched them from behind. On the monitor, Hyun-soo, with his first title activated, was visible.

The two resumed their conversation.

“If he kills Grout, what percentage of story completion will he achieve?”

“I wonder more about what he’ll get.”

“Can he really do it…?”

“….”

Tae-seok didn’t respond. Nor did Se-jin behind him.

‘As expected…’

And when the Asnum in Hyun-soo’s possession showed its power, Se-jin checked his wristwatch. An assistant entered the room.

“President, it’s time to go.”

Lee Se-jin had a business trip to the USA. He turned away as he saw Grout walking toward Arte. He hurriedly got into the car.

The car slid smoothly towards the airport. Se-jin closed his eyes, knowing what Tae-seok and Ji-hee were curious about.

‘Arte has nowhere to go.’

Where could he go, descending to earth for the first time in 300 years? That was the crux of the reward. Se-jin smirked bitterly. Of course, that was if Grout were defeated.

‘What was the temporary skill creation?’

He hadn’t seen the details as he had entered the Special User Management Team midway.

‘It’s impossible for a single unique skill to change the tide. Even the new legendary-grade skill, Connection (因緣), is exceptional but insufficient.’

That was Se-jin’s judgment. Yet, he held one hope.

User Hyun-soo was always full of surprises.

But today was different.

‘Isn’t the enemy just too absurd?’

While thinking this, Se-jin looked out the window and his eyes widened.

“Stop the car.”

Se-jin got out as if possessed. He saw a huge electronic billboard. The announcer was reading breaking news, and the content was scrolling at the bottom.

[Breaking News: Blacksmith Hyun. Second world message announced.]

The world message soon appeared.

[He is the first user to hunt a demon.]

[His name is Blacksmith Hyun.]

Se-jin was astonished.

Ring, ring, ring—

His phone rang. It was Tae-seok.

He immediately asked, “What percentage of the story completion did he achieve?”

The answer he heard left Se-jin stunned.

He felt chills run down his spine. He then asked another important question.

“What skill did he create?”

Act 118

Prev I TOC I Next

Looking down from the high cliff, only the dark abyss awaited below. The sight sent chills down my spine. If one survived a fall from such a height, they would surely be akin to the sun god Solarun or the demon god Barbatos.

“Hoo…”

I took a step back from the edge of the cliff. Seeing the slimy substance trickling down the ground where I had just been standing made me chuckle. It seemed they had been experimenting non-stop. To collect this much residual spirit…

I glanced down. My clothes weren’t some garish fluorescent or pink outfit but rather a coat that adhered to a semblance of normalcy. Thanks to that, while I couldn’t say I ‘liked’ it, it was at least at the level of ‘acceptable for a human being.’ However, the residual spirit had damaged it here and there.

‘It’s not something I treasure, but it was a luxury item among luxury items. This is annoying.’

I still couldn’t understand the fashion sense of someone who adored anything labeled as ‘luxury,’ regardless of personal taste.

‘Why am I still fine despite being covered in residual spirit?’

Aiden’s final move had been a surprising trump card even to me. The resentment and toxicity harbored within the ‘spirit’ were potent. Just coming into contact with it would warp an ordinary person’s mana pathways, contort their body, and corrupt them from within, turning them into a demon or, worse, a frenzied demon.

A system message I hadn’t noticed earlier appeared in the corner of my vision.

[The attribute <Vessel of the Demon Lord> has protected you from contamination.]

So that’s why. Reading the message once, I vaguely understood why I was unharmed. If I had known for sure, I wouldn’t be spouting nonsense about ‘self’ or such. It was the rambling of someone who didn’t even know the ‘phi’ in ‘philosophy.’

“I must not let my guard down to prevent this from happening again… Hm?”

Why was I suddenly using formal speech? Shouldn’t the character of ‘Black Knight’ take precedence over formal speech?

“Ugh…”

As I groaned and held my head, I realized why. The mask had cracked. It was cracked enough that I could feel the skin beneath it.

“What the hell is happening to this thing?”

The mask made of ‘Sombra’ was no longer maintaining its previous hardness. Some parts of the ‘Sombra’ had already started falling off, becoming more like mud, and were being absorbed into my shadow.

[Sombra has protected your body from demonic energy.]

[Sombra is undergoing reconstruction.]

On closer inspection, Sombra had deployed a thin layer over my skin to shield it from the residual spirit. Even so, it was strange. No matter how much of a villain’s fate I bore as the <Vessel of the Demon Lord>, it shouldn’t have been able to prevent physical damage from the residual spirit.

‘This thing is definitely alive.’

Since feeling a threat to my life in the Holy Nation, I’ve had this thought. It acted on its own to protect me, even though I hadn’t commanded it. It seemed it acted independently to protect its own life, though.

‘Still, it’s a selfishness that helps.’

Though the weakened Sombra would heal over time, I had no idea how long that would take.

Quick recovery method.

‘I know one.’

One of the ways a demon heals wounds is through “cannibalism.” But no matter how crazy someone might be, who would eat a demon? Except for the ‘northern barbarians,’ there’s probably no one who would do such a thing.

‘Ugh.’

Just the thought of putting that slimy body in my mouth made me feel nauseous. Even Julian, who disliked many things, seemed to shudder at the thought.

‘I have no choice but to use the soul stones to heal slowly.’

Although it wouldn’t be as revolutionary as “cannibalism,” it would still shorten the recovery time. Fortunately, I had some extra soul stones. I obtained them from the Holy Nation.

Now that the situation was under control, should I head back to the mansion and prepare? I need to be ready for whatever happens next…

“Sir Black Knight?”

As I was trying to clear my head, I heard Aileen’s voice. I almost instinctively turned my head naturally.

‘Darn it!’

My mask was damaged by the residual spirit. I stopped myself just in time before I turned my head without thinking. My face was exposed, and if I spoke, formal speech would surely slip out.

“Ugh…”

At that moment, I heard a startled voice from behind. She must have discovered the residual spirit on the ground.

“Where is Lord Aiden?”

Considering the person she had been fighting with for a while had disappeared, it was a natural question. Because of the foggy smoke created by the residual spirit and Sombra, Aileen couldn’t see the situation clearly and kept asking questions.

I wanted to answer her.

‘Ugh…’

I realized the formal speech was about to come out again, so I couldn’t open my mouth recklessly. What should I do? I couldn’t speak, and I couldn’t turn my head. In this frustrating situation, I resorted to the universal language of body language.

Swoosh.

I pointed towards the cliff with my hand.

“I see.”

Even though it was a simple gesture, she seemed to understand, and I heard a bitter voice from behind. Meanwhile, the mask made of Sombra started to slide off my face.

Splatter.

As the slimy Sombra hit the ground, it echoed through the underground.

“Blood… Are you hurt?”

No, don’t come closer. Don’t come any closer! To stop her from approaching, I raised my sword without turning around and pointed it at her.

“If you’re hurt, you need treatment! There’s demonic energy swirling around here!”

She’s saying the demonic energy could seep into the wound and make it more dangerous, but…

‘No, you’re more dangerous than the demonic energy.’

In front of me was a cliff, behind me was Aileen. I couldn’t reveal my identity. Damn it! I’m in a tight spot.

“Come out quickly! The amount of residual spirit is increasing!”

Just as she said, the amount of residual spirit leaking from the hole in the ceiling was growing.

“I can’t understand this. Really! I’ll just come to you!”

No, don’t come!

Too startled, I opened my mouth reflexively.

“No need…”

Formal speech was about to slip out.

“Ugh!”

I bit my tongue to stop my treacherous mouth from moving.

Although I stopped speaking, even the Sombra wrapped around to conceal the Moonlight Sword began to lose its shape.

Please… Why are you doing this to me?

In a hurry, I sheathed the resplendent jeweled sword to hide it and took a step towards the cliff.

‘If this place connects to the dam, then there must be a passageway below… There it is!’

“Wait, what are you doing…!”

As I prepared to jump off the cliff, I heard Aileen’s bewildered voice. I must look like a madman. Even I couldn’t believe what I was about to do. Hastily, I sheathed the Moonlight Sword and jumped down.

Catching the edge of a hole leading to another passageway below, I quickly slipped inside to escape.

“……!”

***

As Aileen approached the cliff where the Black Knight had fallen, she covered her mouth due to the stifling demonic energy and took a step back.

He didn’t jump to his death. There must have been a reason for his decision. But why?

Although she couldn’t be certain what the liquid that had splattered on the ground was, she suspected it was blood.

“The wound looked deep, so why did he insist on escaping?”

I don’t get it. Until a moment ago, he didn’t avoid talking to me.

“Did he flee because he was injured?”

He was someone who hid his identity enough to wear a mask all the time. Someone like that would likely distrust humans and would never show their vulnerability to others.

“Stubborn, really.”

When they encountered each other in the underground waterway, he even lowered his sword enough to give her trust despite pointing it at her. But in the end, she couldn’t gain any trust from him, which made Aileen feel unnecessarily irritated.

After all, he’s just another person.

Trying to clear her negative thoughts, she turned her gaze towards the cliff where the residual spirit was flowing.

“Lord Aiden.”

She couldn’t get close, but she could tell it was incredibly deep. Although the Black Knight had jumped, she was sure he would somehow survive. But she had no such confidence in Aiden.

With his frail wizard’s body, surviving in this deep place would be tough.

Probably.

***

After arriving at the mansion, I washed up with hot water and changed into suitable clothes. A servant informed me that a guest had arrived.

When the door opened, a familiar face entered.

Korund?

“I-I apologize, Sir Julian!”

Without warning, he bowed his head and started apologizing.

“Because Aiden returned midway, I couldn’t disable all the magical devices…!”

Although I sighed, I appreciated his honesty. It showed how much he feared Julian.

“It’s fine. The matters I had planned were mostly ‘settled’ anyway.”

“Settled… you say?”

“Are you curious? I can tell you if you wish.”

At the mention of ‘settled,’ a look of ‘fear’ spread across Korund’s face.

“N-No, thank you!”

“Raise your head, Korund. You did make an effort, after all.”

At my words, Korund cautiously lifted his head from the ground.

“Effort… So, you’re going to spare me?”

Whether to spare him or not, I had never really given Korund much thought in the first place. So why was he so terrified? Ah, Pintel…

“Whatever Sir Pintel might have said, it’s fine. We’re both Bishops, after all.”

“Th-Thank you…!”

In truth, leaving him terrified and unable to act might have been the best course, but I felt a slight twinge of pity.

‘When I first saw him, he was definitely quite plump.’

Perhaps he had been so stressed that he lost his appetite, as he seemed a bit thinner now. A fear diet… it’s surprisingly effective, isn’t it?

“You’ve done well, Sir Korund. Now, would you please leave? I have some personal matters to attend to.”

“Understood!”

Korund nodded hurriedly, bowed politely, and left. It seems Bishops have been visiting the mansion quite often recently. Anyone would think I’m the Grand Archbishop or something.

…Should I give it a try?

***

After Korund left, I instructed the butler to ensure no one entered the office and to turn away any visitors. Then, I took out a small jewel box from the drawer. Inside was a soul stone.

It belonged to Idel, the Tri-horn demon who had driven me to the brink of death in the Holy Nation.

‘If I feed this to Sombra, it should recover somewhat.’

The soul stone, a terrifyingly dark red, brought back unpleasant memories of being covered in residual spirit in the underground waterway, causing a slight aversion. It wasn’t the demonic power inside that repulsed me but a physiological aversion.

After all, it did ruin my clothes!

“But how do I give it to him?”

Should I put the soul stone in a bowl and tell Sombra to eat it? I was beginning to recognize Sombra as a kind of living creature, but that seemed too much like treating it as a pet. It’s not a companion demon, after all.

“Eat this.”

Placing the soul stone in my hand, I recalled how Sombra had absorbed it before and guided it to do the same.

At that moment, Sombra, which had been dormant, began to stir. Indeed, a demon moves desperately when there’s something to eat.

Swoosh.

Sombra circled around the soul stone, prodding it as if inspecting it, then stopped and began to return to my body. It felt almost like it was pouting.

What the… Could it be…

“Are you being picky about your food?”
