“The quickest way to solve the freight volume problem is to increase the toll fees.”

The meeting room, where the internal affairs meeting was taking place, fell silent in an instant at the unexpected answer from the third prince. A nobleman operating a small merchant guild was the first to come to his senses and asked in a trembling voice.

“Prince Ian, if we raise the toll fees, the number of merchants coming into the imperial capital will decrease!”

“Yes, that’s right. Isn’t that exactly what we need right now?”

At Seong-jin’s relaxed answer, the nobleman who had raised the issue turned pale. Naturally, if the number of merchants entering the capital decreased, the freight volume would also decrease. Some high-ranking nobles looked at the nobleman who raised the issue with contempt.

A white-haired man standing next to the emperor, intrigued by Seong-jin’s response, asked a question.

“If the number of merchants decreases, won’t the total toll revenue decrease, leading to reduced tax income?”

The concern of high-level executives often boils down to “product price increases.” For Seong-jin, who was trained to handle such concerns, the white-haired man’s question was like an open-book test.

“The total toll revenue can be divided into the number of merchants passing through and the toll fee charged per merchant.”

The nobles began to murmur as Seong-jin suddenly explained the total toll revenue by splitting it into two factors. While some might have split a walnut into two halves, why split the total toll revenue?

In contrast, the white-haired man seemed to understand what Seong-jin was getting at and unconsciously smiled.

“Even if we increase the toll fee by 10%, the number of merchants won’t drastically decrease. They already have contracted trading partners. While some merchant guilds unable to bear the toll fees might leave, their number would be minimal.”

“So, we can secure additional tax revenue temporarily?”

“Yes, with the temporarily increased taxes, we can fund the road expansion construction, and naturally, freight will spread to surrounding cities where the toll fees are cheaper.”

“Not only the capital but also the nearby cities guarding the capital will become stronger.”

Looking around, Seong-jin noticed that apart from some lower-ranking nobles, several high-ranking nobles, including the white-haired man, seemed to understand his point.

“Do you think there will be other effects?”

“I believe it will contribute to the gentrification of the capital.”

Some looked at the third prince with tense or curious eyes as he expressed his opinion confidently, unlike in the past. Of course, Adrian, who looked at him in shock, was also there.

“In the end, only high-quality goods that can bear the toll fees will be supplied to the imperial capital, contributing to the city’s gentrification.”

Some nobles were left speechless by Seong-jin’s answer. Above all, it was hard to believe that such logical statements came from the mouth of the third prince, known as the “fool.”

Moreover, the emperor’s response also defied the nobles’ expectations.

“Interesting.”

With just one word from the emperor, no one dared to criticize the third prince’s opinion.

“It seems we can conclude today’s meeting here.”

The emperor’s blood-red eyes scanned the room, lingering longer on the first prince and his uncle, Duke Blake.

As the two who usually expressed their opinions did not present any rebuttal, the chancellor concluded the meeting on behalf of the emperor. After the emperor and the chancellor left, nobles below the rank of viscount began to argue about the toll increase issue, while higher-ranking nobles were busy discussing the suddenly changed demeanor of the third prince.

Kyle, the protagonist of the original novel, showed a faint smile to Seong-jin before leaving the meeting room, while his second brother, Adrian, approached Seong-jin and spoke.

“Are you… alright?”

Though he felt he might have misheard a word, Seong-jin responded kindly, knowing Adrian always looked after the third prince in the original novel.

“Yes, brother, don’t worry.”

“Well, I was surprised to see you today, but if you say so, I suppose it’s fine.”

“Yes.”

“As I mentioned before, seeing you today made me say this again: always be cautious in your actions.”

After adding a word of caution, Adrian left the meeting room.

Finally alone in the internal affairs meeting room, Seong-jin had time to think.

‘Have I really transmigrated…?’

Wondering if it was a dream, he pinched his cheek, but it hurt too much to be a dream. He needed a place to organize his thoughts based on the emperor he saw today, the reactions of the nobles, and the content of the original work.

As he was about to leave the meeting room, thinking someone might be waiting for him outside, he suddenly felt nauseous and dizzy, and he collapsed without realizing it. Earlier, he hadn’t felt it due to the tension of speaking before the emperor.

“Ugh…”

He began to smell alcohol deep in his throat. Despite being accustomed to frequent drinking with other departments and executives, he never drank before an important meeting. He began to understand Kyle’s feelings a bit, the one who cut off Ian’s head.

Feeling too sick to throw up in the meeting room on the first day of his transmigration, Seong-jin used all his strength to find a place that looked like a bush and headed outside the meeting room. Just as he thought he couldn’t hold it any longer, someone handed him a jar. He didn’t know who it was, but if it was his subordinate, he would have given them a bonus for such perfect timing.

As he urgently grabbed the jar and threw up, he felt someone patting his back as if they were familiar with such a situation.

“Your Highness, are you alright?”

Someone asked about his well-being, but the words didn’t reach Seong-jin, who was too out of it.

After vomiting once, his mind cleared, and Seong-jin felt embarrassed. To experience such a disgraceful incident right after transmigrating, even with his modern training in frequent drinking, was something he had never encountered.

Still, he felt he needed to thank the person who helped him to clear his conscience a little.

“Thank you.”

The person who heard the thank-you didn’t respond. Curious about who it was, Seong-jin looked up and saw a middle-aged man with graying hair and a stern expression.

“Excuse me?”

At Seong-jin’s repeated polite question, the middle-aged man spoke in a trembling voice.

“Y-your Highness?”

At the single word muttered by the middle-aged man, Seong-jin felt as if he had been struck by lightning. The description of Ian in the original novel flashed through his mind.

One of Ian’s notorious habits was ignoring his subordinates. If Ian used polite speech or pretended not to know their names, that person would undoubtedly end up dead and dragged out of the palace.

Seeing the middle-aged man turn pale, Seong-jin calmed him down and was about to return to the palace when he heard someone calling him from the side.

“Prince Ian!”

Seeing someone address him as “Prince,” he replied informally to avoid making another victim like the middle-aged man.

“Who?”

When Ian didn’t recognize his name, the person, whose confident expression faltered, spoke in a trembling voice.

“Y-Your Highness, I-I am Viscount Helington.”

‘Helington?’

Seong-jin’s face twisted in confusion at the unfamiliar name he had never seen in the original work. The viscount, looking like he was about to cry, said.

“Y-Your Highness? Didn’t you drink with me just yesterday?”

A drinking buddy, huh?

Sensing that this person might provide valuable information and unknown stories, Seong-jin decided to start acting, just like he had cultivated relationships in the strategic planning team for smooth data acquisition from other departments.

“Now that you mention it, I think I remember a bit. I drank too much yesterday. My memory is completely blank. Can you tell me if anything happened?”

Relieved that the third prince was acknowledging him, Viscount Helington sighed and spoke.

“It was the same as usual. However…?”

“However?”

“Yesterday, Your Highness told me that you had no intention of speaking at the internal affairs meeting, but suddenly talked about raising the toll fees, which surprised me.”

At the viscount’s answer, a cold sensation swept through Seong-jin’s chest.

This person is not just a drinking buddy. He is certainly someone’s informant.

‘The first prince’s side, perhaps?’

“Oh… I must have spoken impulsively due to the hangover.”

At Seong-jin’s answer, Viscount Helington’s face briefly showed relief. Seong-jin noticed this and began to think about how to use him.

Viscount Helington, thinking that the third prince had no suspicion, patted his chest and said.

“If Your Highness ever needs to discuss any internal affairs matters in the future, please call upon your drinking buddy, Viscount Helington.”

Seong-jin was now certain. This person was openly telling him that he was being watched. Given the amount of suspicion his past self, the foolish Ian, had accumulated, it seemed his burdens were considerable.

With a moderate smile, Seong-jin reassured him.

“Alright, Viscount Helington, let’s have a drink again next time.”

Viscount Helington, smiling broadly at Seong-jin’s clear call of his name and invitation, withdrew.

As the viscount left, Seong-jin noticed the still-pale expression on the middle-aged man’s face.

He had to accept that he was now “the fool” Ian Helios.

“Shall we head back?”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

The middle-aged man, somewhat relieved by Ian’s informal speech, guided Seong-jin back to the third prince’s palace.

Although he almost needed a jar due to the queasiness, fortunately, no such disaster occurred.

Seeing the grandiose buildings, which he had never seen in modern times, as his palace, Seong-jin began to relax, feeling a bit eased knowing he had transmigrated right after getting promoted.

Ian, feeling drowsy from the alcohol, attempted to take a nap as soon as he arrived at the palace. Hoping that if it were a dream, it would end upon waking, but nothing changed.

Even after closing and opening his eyes again, the view of the French royal palace remained.

As Seong-jin, now accepting the unchanged reality, organized his thoughts and future plans based on the original story, the middle-aged man, Tom, entered.

“Your Highness, would you like some honey water?”

Tom’s thoughtful gesture was a lifesaver. The additional bonus in the next personnel evaluation would be a perfect score.

“Thank you, Tom, right?”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Tom’s face brightened noticeably when Seong-jin called his name. Confirming Tom’s improved mood, Seong-jin asked the most crucial question.

He needed to know how much of his most limited and precious resource, “time,” was left.

Time management and reporting timelines were essential in strategic planning. Especially now, it was a matter directly linked to his “lifespan.”

“What year is it in the imperial calendar today?”

“It’s 577.”

At Tom’s answer, Ian’s face took on a contemplative expression.

Strike 163

The Sword Strike of Despair.

As he watches, Arte’s pain is transferred to Hyun-soo.

Grout had imprisoned and tormented Arte for his entire life, simply because he possessed superior knowledge to humans.

Now, the power infused in Hyun-soo’s sword is Arte’s agony.

Compared to the mental anguish, this is merely physical pain.

However, with this power, Grout is about to experience unimaginable suffering.

A Ghost Steps, carrying Arte’s lament.

Screeee—!

[Dealt 16,933 damage.]

[7 times the pain is applied.]

“Ugh, ughaaaah!!!”

Grout’s eyes rolled back as his arm was slashed.

Just a mere slash, but the pain defied comprehension.

The power of the Sword Strike of Despair exerted even more strength from the unexpected.

Hyun-soo thought that Grout’s extraordinary reflexes might counter the ghost steps.

But the overwhelming pain, as described by the Sword Strike of Despair, caused him to lose his mind and paralyzed all his senses and reason.

And he still needs to suffer more.

The Art of Swordsmanship.

Originally, Ghost Steps is a series of continuous attacks that cannot deliver critical hits.

It can deliver more than five attacks at once with its restrictions.

But the passive skill The Art of Swordsmanship imbued in the Supreme Sword allows critical hits, to which the effect of the Sword Strike of Despair is applied.

Each attack deals an additional 180% damage.

And it strikes.

[A critical hit was delivered.]

[Dealt 21,067 damage.]

Three times.

[A critical hit was delivered.]

[Dealt 22,413 damage.]

Grout’s total HP is higher than any enemy Hyun-soo has ever faced.

Even after being directly hit by the strongest strike in the world, he still had half of his HP left.

Four times.

Five times.

Six times.

Seven times.

Eight times.

Screeeak

Crack

Thud

Boom

[Dealt 15,313 damage.]

[Dealt 14,130 damage.]

[A critical hit was delivered.]

[Dealt 13,612 damage.]

Eleven times.

[Grout’s HP falls below 20%.]

It’s fine even if he has incomprehensible HP and defense.

The current Ghost Steps activates over three seconds, unlike usual.

Fourteen times.

Fifteen times.

Sixteen times.

[A critical hit was delivered.]

[Dealt 16,313 damage.]

“Arghaaaaah!”

Grout writhed in agony. His eyes rolled back, and he was foaming at the mouth.

But this is only a hundredth, a ten-thousandth of the pain Arte felt.

19th strike.

20th strike.

CRACK-CRACK-CRACK-CRACK!

A demon who toys with humans for amusement. A noble among the demon race, known to be the most superior of all species.

Unbelievable words escaped from the mouth of the blood demon, Grout.

“S-s-stop iiiit!”

It was a power brought forth by the loss of reason.

But Hyun-soo did not stop.

21st, 22nd, 23rd strikes.

The rage of Arte that he felt in its entirety now plunged Hyun-soo into extreme focus.

24th, 25th, and then 26th, 27th strikes.

He watched the creature struggle desperately.

Killing him and claiming the reward would make him even stronger.

Additionally, it would undoubtedly be a milestone in clearing the Cage Quest.

28th strike.

29th strike.

THUD—

For the final strike, he launched himself off his hind legs as if stepping on solid ground, thrusting his sword into the demon’s chest.

SQUELCH—

[A critical hit was delivered.]

[Dealt 17,301 damage.]

Slowly, the demon Grout began to disintegrate, finally freed from the pain.

Grout’s eyes met Hyun-soo’s.

“…You think you’re so great just because you shattered a fragment.”

Grout’s chilling eyes spoke.

“Do you think Arte can escape from here? Hmm? From this Beres Mountain Range?”

Hyun-soo drew his sword without hesitation.

He heard Grout’s voice as it completely disintegrated.

“…You made me take a risk.”

[Grout will return.]

Hyun-soo’s eyes wavered.

He hadn’t known that Grout might return in his true form.

Hyun-soo was able to kill Grout only because he was a fragment.

Hyun-soo tried to appear calm, but he couldn’t fathom the power of Grout at full strength.

However, there was something fortunate.

He could become stronger here and now.

[You have eradicated a fragment of the blood demon Grout.]

Ding!

[Linked Quest: Eradicate the Fragment of the Blood Demon Grout completed.]

[Experience and artifact drop rate doubled.]

[You have gained 1,260,041 experience points.]

Hyun-soo was astonished. It was the first time he had gained over a million experience points.

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up…]

He leveled up seven times in one go.

In the 300-level range, where the experience required to level up is extreme, this was beyond comprehension.

Additionally,

[You have gained 223,031 gold.]

The amount of gold obtained was also enormous.

The only regret was that there were no item drops since it was just a fragment.

However, Hyun-soo reached level 320.

He was much stronger than before.

[You have gained 25% story progression.]

[The story progression reflects various factors.]

Various factors were reflected.

Although Hyun-soo did not know, it included the difference in levels between him and Grout, the time it took to defeat him, and many other elements.

[You have completed the quest with an astounding performance.]

[You have gained 7% story progression.]

And where this story progression would lead, he did not know.

At that moment,

[You have eradicated a fragment of the blood demon Grout.]

[This is an unbelievably astounding feat.]

“Again…?”

Suddenly, blood gushed out from the disintegrating remnants of Grout’s fragment.

The blood flew towards Arte and flung him out of the Sage Tower.

“Krah!?”

Even in his moment of annihilation, Grout tormented Arte.

[Another story begins.]

The first time, it surprised him; the second time, it puzzled him; the third time, it left him bewildered.

Ding!

[Linked Quest: Incoming Monsters]

Grade: SS

Restriction: For those who are progressing with the new story

Reward: Story Progression ???

Penalty for Failure: Arte’s death

Description: Due to Grout’s curse, Arte will be attacked by all the monsters in the Beres Mountain Range if he leaves the Sage Tower. Additionally, Grout’s range of activity is restricted. If Arte escapes the Beres Mountain Range, Grout can no longer interfere with him. Ensure Arte’s safe escape.

Rumble—

A massive vibration shook the area.

From below, from above. Monsters were coming from all over the Beres Mountain Range.

[There are a total of 8,643 monsters living in the Beres Mountain Range.]

The Beres Mountain Range is known as a high-level hunting ground in the domestic server.

The average level of the monsters is 330-350.

Among the 8,000 or so monsters, there were 100 boss-level monsters.

Hyun-soo saw the black horde of monsters.

His body trembled for a moment.

But he quickly calmed down.

He slowly took in the sight of the Beres Mountain Range.

Then, he thought and found the only way.

‘There is no other way.’

He moved towards Arte.

***

Meanwhile.

“We have risen to rank 4.”

Another story, resulting in an increase in difficulty.

Director Lee Se-jin of the Special User Management Team stroked his chin.

The new story’s grade goes up to level 7.

Among them, level 4 is exceptionally difficult.

The quest to eliminate Grout’s fragment just now was level 5.

Even that level 5 might not have been cleared without Arte.

Director Lee Se-jin pondered.

Thousands of monsters incoming and only one blacksmith.

He couldn’t think of a solution based on his common sense.

“What will Team Leader Kim do?”

“…I don’t know.”

Anyone he asked would likely have the same answer.

One thing was certain.

The reward for the newly triggered emergency quest had the story progression marked as ???.

“I wonder how much will be accumulated if he breaks through it.”

It varies depending on the situation and what the system acknowledges.

One thing was certain: it would at least provide a base of 20%.

The Special User Management Team focused on the monitor.

The monsters were closing in on Arte.

***

Boom—

The Sage Tower.

All the doors of the tower where Arte had lived for 300 years closed on their own.

Forced out of the tower, Arte looked down.

Monsters were swarming up.

As he turned to escape upwards, monsters were pouring in from there too.

“……”

Grrrr!

Kyaaaaah-!

He saw about fifty snow wolves charging.

[Snow Wolf Lv.347]

The advantage of snow wolves is their speed.

The ones that arrived faster than the other monsters lunged at Arte.

At that moment.

Slash—

Hyun-soo appeared.

Swoosh—

With his coat flapping, Hyun-soo swung his sword upwards.

Swoosh—

The sword’s cry.

The Sword King’s technique slashed all the wolves within a 30-meter radius.

“Yelp, yelp, yelp!”

“Yelp!”

Thud—

As Arte watched the wolves fall dead in an instant, he grabbed Hyun-soo’s collar.

“Go, you’ve done enough, hurry, go. Please go!”

Arte cried out.

It was a brief encounter.

But he was grateful to Hyun-soo for fighting for him.

This was enough.

They were surrounded by monsters on all sides.

The Sage.

The one who knew everything in the world couldn’t think of any solution.

Even if the deaths and resurrections of the outsiders were infinite, the process was too painful and terrible.

In truth, Arte couldn’t understand.

Why did the Sword King and Spear Heaven care for Hyun-soo so much?

Why did the Sword King teach him his swordsmanship and Spear Heaven his secret techniques?

“I’m fine. It’s enough that you inflicted pain on Grout. So please, go back!!”

He babbled anything. The distance between them and the monsters was getting shorter.

From the front and back, more than 3,000 monsters were closing in, visible right in front of them.

Hyun-soo finally spoke.

“……”

Hearing those words, Arte finally understood.

Why the Sword King cherished him and why Spear Heaven became his friend.

Slash—

He drew his bow.

With one bow in hand, Hyun-soo stepped forward and said,

“I have not learned how to retreat.”

Those words touched Arte deeply.

He knew. Hyun-soo would want the reward forged for him.

But behind that reward was a blacksmith who knew no surrender.

The words Hyun-soo spoke so he wouldn’t feel ashamed or sorry.

Hyun-soo drew back the bowstring.

And Arte noticed something. It was attached to the arrowhead.

It was something very familiar.

When Hyun-soo shot his most powerful arrow at Grout, the two had talked about it.

‘You should take that as well.’

‘What is that?’

‘It’s a micro bomb I made. It can easily kill 100 monsters at once.’

A bomb slightly larger than a forefinger.

A creation of Arte’s genius knowledge.

Hyun-soo aimed at the creatures climbing up from below.

The distance between them and the monsters was now 30 meters.

25 meters.

20 meters.

Arte instinctively shouted.

“You know killing just 100 monsters won’t be enough…!”

At that moment, Hyun-soo turned his body.

Thwack—

The bowstring twanged.

It seemed like the arrow was flying towards the monsters.

But then, the arrow hit the mountain peak.

Boom—

“Missed…?”

Arte’s eyes wavered.

“No, it didn’t miss.”

Didn’t miss?

Soon, Arte heard an enormous rumble.

Rumble—

A blizzard that hadn’t occurred in a hundred years. As a result, the Beres Mountain Range had accumulated several times more snow than usual.

That snow was now cascading down from the impact. An avalanche had occurred.

It was like a massive snow wave over 8 meters high.

And Hyun-soo heard a notification.

[Ingenious idea.]

[The system acknowledges it.]

[You have gained 21% story progression.]

That’s right.

Hyun-soo’s arrow hadn’t missed.

The enormous snow wave began sweeping away the monsters from above.

Team Leader Kim Tae-seok visited CEO Lee Se-jin’s office.

“What? Another story is unfolding?”

Se-jin was surprised.

In the virtual reality game Ares, there exists a ‘New Story’ system. This new story is a privilege for users who clear it better than others. Sometimes, it also serves as a reward activated by high clear rates. The new stories are categorized into different levels.

There is the general new story at level 7. Level 6 stories include ‘A Story for You’ and ‘Another Story.’ The ‘Another Story’ is usually a chain quest but also contains more special intricacies.

“The levels can continue to rise, then.”

‘Another Story’ can ascend further in levels. A level 6 story can climb step by step to level 5, level 4, and level 3.

“A quest linked to the demon Grout…”

Since it involved the demon Grout, Se-jin didn’t know how high it could go.

“If ‘Another Story’ is triggered and rises a level, the story rate will start to apply.”

“Correct.”

The story rate increases each time the level rises and each time another story begins. It also goes up each time it’s cleared, like a stage. With remarkable achievements and extraordinary feats, it increases significantly. At the end, when everything is completed, it provides a comprehensive reward.

“If ‘Another Story’ triggers again, can it be cleared?”

Se-jin questioned himself. It was difficult to judge within the bounds of his common sense. This quest was related to the demon Grout.

“I don’t know either.”

Tae-seok was also unsure. Then Se-jin showed an intrigued smile.

“If it’s cleared, what will he gain?”

What kind of reward would be given at the end of the story? All of it depended on user Hyeon-soo.

***

Grout laughed.

An arrow sent by a mere human blacksmith. To Grout, who toyed with humans like insects, it was laughable.

A demon. Among the demon race, known for their combat prowess, those who rise to the highest ranks govern the demon race as nobles. Grout was among the lowest of these demons. But even so, he was powerful.

In his complete form, Grout wielded the power of level 700. An unprecedented level in Ares so far. Of course, the game Ares strictly maintains balance. Grout, in his level 700 form, couldn’t descend recklessly. Such a descent would entail immense risk even for him.

Therefore, Grout borrowed the power of fragments to manifest.

Grout in his fragmented state could not exert even 50% of his usual power. Even so, he possessed strength above level 400. Thus, an arrow shot by a mere insect was laughable to him.

At that moment, Grout sensed a massive power.

“…?”

Piiiiiing-!

It was an extraordinarily fast movement. Instinctively, Grout formed a pentagonal shield. In that instant, an arrow flying at the speed of light collided with the shield.

Crackkk-!

Most shields’ durability is determined by the user’s total defense. The defense of the demon Grout was beyond human imagination. Even if he was weakened by more than 50%.

However,

Crashhhh-

The arrow pierced through the shield and struck Grout’s chest.

[You have taken 61,313 damage.]

Grout’s body was pushed back.

“Khaaah!”

Grout, who flew about 15 meters, was shocked.

‘This, this is…?’

Soon, Grout realized. The arrow’s power had clearly been more than enough to pierce him. Yet, it was lodged in his chest. With a foreboding expression, he looked down at the arrow, which was glowing red-hot.

The genius blacksmith had prepared for this possibility. While forging the arrow, he had judged that it might not be able to break even a fragment. So he imbued it with a special power. This power, which activated probabilistically, now revealed its might.

[Fourfold Arrow.]

It pushes the damage taken four more times consecutively.

Once.

“Khaaah!”

[You have taken 53,313 damage.]

Twice.

“Kurgh!”

[You have taken 54,075 damage.]

Thrice.

“Kyah!”

[You have taken 44,317 damage.]

Four times.

“Krrrgh!”

[You have taken 57,976 damage.]

[Grout’s HP has dropped below 40%.]

[You have taken rapid, severe damage.]

[Status effect: Unconsciousness is activated.]

[Stunned for 2 seconds.]

Grout’s current HP was less than half of its usual amount. This halved total was displayed as 100% on his HP bar, and this single arrow had reduced it by about 60%.

Grout felt this kind of pain for the first time in hundreds of years. The pain was so intense that he was momentarily knocked unconscious in mid-air. Regaining his senses, his noble face contorted.

“I will kill youuuuu!”

He was a mere insect.

Grout was determined to repay the humiliation inflicted by such an insect.

At that moment.

Grout, who was about to fly to the Tower of the Sage, felt an eerie sensation behind him. Turning his head, Grout was shocked. Hyun-soo was standing there as if he owned the sky.

(The One Who Made the Most Powerful Shot)

Unique Title

Grade: A

Special Ability:

· When you make another attack that surpasses your previous most powerful one, the damage is doubled.

The arrow Hyun-soo had just shot dealt one of the highest single-shot damages in Ares. The top-ranking high-level players ranged from level 360 to 370. Even the world’s number one player was known to be at level 400.

Hyun-soo was confident. If this arrow had hit a high-ranker between levels 360 and 370, it would have forced a logout or reduced their HP by more than 90%, depending on their class.

“I think it should work.”

And right after he shot, Hyun-soo conversed with Arte. Once the conversation ended, Hyun-soo stepped on the window sill.

At that moment.

[You have inflicted massive damage on the Blood Demon Grout.]

Hyun-soo was surprised. He didn’t understand.

‘I already received the quest, so why…?’

[Another Story begins.]

“…!?”

This was the notification he heard before receiving the linked quest: Cage from Arte. Generally, the start of a new story notification indicated an increase in difficulty and maximized rewards.

‘Could I hear such notifications twice in a row…?’

This was the first time he had received Another Story, so there might be hidden systems he wasn’t aware of.

Ding!

[Linked Quest: Fragment of the Blood Demon Grout]

Grade: S

Requirement: The one who triggered a new episode

Reward: 25% Story Rate, 2x EXP and Drop Rate

Penalty for Failure: Arte’s death.

Description: Your arrow provoked the Blood Demon Grout. Destroy the Fragment of the Blood Demon Grout.

The quest description included something called the Story Rate. It also highlighted the advantages of Another Story.

‘Double EXP and Drop Rate…?’

Even as a fragment, it was boss-level. And it was at an enormous level 400. The thought of receiving double the experience points for defeating such a named boss was unimaginable.

‘I have defeated many named bosses before.’

But the fragment had a much higher level than those, meaning it would grant much more experience points. The amount of experience points gained with double rewards was beyond imagination.

“I’m going.”

Leap of Calamity.

Hyun-soo instantly moved behind Grout. Grout was shocked to discover him.

‘Is he a blacksmith?’

The blacksmiths Grout knew were people who stayed inside their forges making artifacts. They lived lives lower than soldiers or knights.

Grout felt something was off.

He had once fought a legend centuries ago. For a moment, he sensed the same spirit in this man.

‘But…’

Grout’s eyes grew cold. Because of that formidable arrow, he hadn’t seen the true essence. The man’s body was insignificant compared to that legend. Among the humans he had encountered, this one was the most trivial and worthless.

Grout laughed.

“Just because you pushed me once, you think you can boast?”

Grout and Hyun-soo moved. Grout’s razor-sharp arms clashed relentlessly with Hyun-soo’s sword.

Clang!

Hyun-soo was amazed. Grout’s speed vastly outmatched his own. It felt irrational, not a matter of skill, but an inherent ability.

‘He hasn’t learned martial arts or fighting techniques.’

Born.

They were blessed with superior genes from birth. Hyun-soo’s face twisted as he took a hit.

Slash-

[HP has dropped below 90%.]

[HP has dropped below 84%.]

[HP has dropped below 81%.]

The damage was greater than any enemy he had faced before.

“Do you know?”

Grout sneered.

“That this isn’t even the source of my power.”

Blood dripped from Hyun-soo’s body, forming droplets in the air around him. The droplets quickly transformed into sharp spikes.

And then.

Stabstabstabstabstab-

[HP has dropped below 75%.]

[HP has dropped below 71%.]

[HP has dropped below 54%.]

Hyun-soo’s HP plummeted. The Blood Demon, Grout, literally used blood as his main weapon. His combat skills were just supplementary.

Hyun-soo quickly activated a skill. Sword King’s Mastery, the Surge Blade, deals extra damage when attacking a vital point.

At that moment.

Flash-

[Negated.]

“…!?”

Hyun-soo was stunned. With a single gesture, everything he had was blocked.

“Blood Explosion.”

Boom-

The blood Hyun-soo had shed exploded beneath him, instantly reducing his HP to below 20%.

“Grrk!”

Grout entertained an amusing thought.

“I will curse you and bring you into my demonic realm.”

Grout’s eyes gleamed menacingly.

“You will create masterpieces like that arrow for me and my army for the rest of your life.”

NPCs have absurd levels of freedom. Players cannot break their bonds, and even Blue Inc. cannot intervene. Just as they do not intrude upon the players’ achievements, they also do not intervene in their downfall.

“I will lock you in a cage and watch.”

[HP has dropped below 12%.]

“Is this all you’ve got? Huh!? Hahahahaha!”

Grout was ecstatic. The thought of having another toy to play with thrilled him. At that moment, Hyun-soo’s expression changed dramatically.

“Is this really all?”

Arte, inside the Tower of the Sage behind him, became visible. Sage Arte. He wasn’t a strong man, but he had the power to temporarily create skills. Hyun-soo had spoken to Arte before flying toward Grout.

‘Arte, let’s give back the pain you received.’

Arte temporarily created a powerful skill.

“Grouttttttt!!!!”

[Sword Strike of Despair]

[Imbues a chosen man with one of his skills, dramatically raising its level by 3.]

[It is a concentration of rage and resentment. Pain increases by 7 times, paralyzing the enemy’s will.]

Grout’s eyes trembled. The man who had seemed endlessly weak just moments ago was now rampaging.

[Berserk Sword]

[10% chance for the sword’s base attack power to increase by 401%.]

[Lasts for 15 seconds.]

It fused with the skill.

A collaboration between Sage Arte and Master Hyun-soo.

[Sword Strike of Despair applies to Ghost Step.]

[Ghost Step level increases by 3.]

[Ghost Step damage increases by 180% per hit and extends to 3 seconds.]

[One attack induces pain 7 times over.]

Hyun-soo was genuinely furious.

“Arte must have suffered much more.”

Of course, Hyun-soo and Arte had only recently met and shared a brief connection. But empathy is a powerful force. No one can imagine the pain of being trapped in a small room for 300 years. Losing his family, his lover, his home, his world, Arte had endlessly screamed in that place.

“You will suffer too.”

Hyun-soo walked the path Arte had paved.

“Ghost Step.”

Now it was Grout’s turn to scream.

Act 115

Prev I TOC I Next

As I walked deeper into the dark underground waterway, a strange feeling began to creep over me. The musty smell gradually faded, and instead, it started to feel cleaner, like there were traces of human presence.

“Indeed… it seems like someone has tampered with this place; it’s an artificial space.”

“That means we should be close to finding the place we’re looking for,” I said, continuing to move forward without stopping.

Just as the unfamiliar underground scenery started to feel somewhat comforting, Aileen suddenly asked, “Black Knight, who are you?”

“A moment ago, didn’t you call me ‘Black Knight’?”

“Not that… I mean your identity.”

What is this? Why is she asking suddenly? Did I make a mistake?

“Given that I cover my face with such a hideous mask, wouldn’t it be more suspicious if I simply answered that question?” I thought my reply was reasonable, but she didn’t seem satisfied.

“It’s not that hideous…,” she murmured to herself, and I couldn’t help but hear it. An unexpected sentiment. Until now, I’d only heard complaints that it was ‘horrifying’ or ‘terrible.’ When I chose the coat at Baek’s store, I thought it looked fine, but it seems there was something off about it.

“Someone like you must have a separate identity within the empire, one that corresponds to the nobility.”

“Why do you think so?”

“Your equipment and the information you possess. These are not things an ordinary person could imitate.” As she spoke, Aileen pointed to the sword hanging at my waist.

“Especially that sword. What kind of mineral is it made from?”

“It’s similar to ordinary swords.”

“That’s a lie. All the swords I’ve seen before had consistency, but the one you use is made from a mineral I’ve never seen. It’s as black as a shadow… almost like it’s alive.”

Alive… as expected of a mage, she was quite accurate. It’s practically something akin to a living creature.

“Using that mineral is how you can emit such an aura from your sword, isn’t it?”

“Yes.”

Though it wasn’t relevant, I agreed for the time being. There was no point in explaining about ‘Sombra’ as it would only raise more doubts.

“To possess such a mineral and have the technology to craft it into a sword means you are someone with power higher than a noble in the empire.”

“Your deductive skills are impressive.”

“It also means you might be someone I know.”

There was a certain undertone to her words. It made me want to stop and look at her, but instead, I wondered, ‘Is she testing me?’

No point in engaging. Instead of replying, I remained silent and quickened my pace. Behind me, I heard the sound of her hurried footsteps and her calling out to me.

Try your best to keep up. It’s not me who is curious, it’s you.

***

‘Even the Crypart family, who detests Julian, is secretly supporting him.’

With this misunderstanding, Korund’s next move was clear.

– ‘Set up a meeting with Aiden on this day.’

‘Become bait to lure Aiden out.’

Julian must have said this with such thoughts in mind. At first, Korund thought that ‘Aiden’ and ‘Julian’ were in cahoots. It seemed that way because Julian had suddenly appeared in the Arena, looking like he was plotting with Aiden.

However, his expectations were wrong.

‘Did Julian show up there to prevent me from collaborating with Aiden…?’

By now, it was too late to renegotiate with Aiden. Korund’s body already bore the deep scars left by Julian.

Scars of ‘fear.’

“Aiden…”

Feeling acutely aware of his own shortcomings, Korund lifted his head and looked at the man in front of him.

“I didn’t expect you to agree to meet again.”

His voice was calm but carried a hint of sarcasm, as if he had anticipated this meeting.

“It wasn’t that long ago that you were furious, claiming I would team up with Julian to drive out your faction.”

“…I misunderstood. I jumped to the conclusion that you had allied with Julian.”

“Have you just now realized? What benefit would I gain from joining forces with that filthy imperial dog?”

“That’s true…”

Ignoring Aiden’s incredulous attitude, Korund recalled Julian’s words.

– ‘When you meet him, ask him to temporarily disable the magical devices in his possession.’

That was Julian’s only request.

Meeting Aiden and asking him to disable his magical devices.

“In that case, finding a common ground is important. Meeting again like this means our goals align, right?”

“Julian’s… overthrow?”

“Yes.”

“Before that, I have one request, Aiden.”

Korund spoke cautiously, aware of how absurd his request would seem.

Seeing his demeanor, Aiden wore a slightly puzzled expression.

“What is it?”

“I’d like you to take out all the magical devices you have and disable them.”

“What?”

Aiden frowned slightly. It was understandable. ‘Magical devices’ are the means by which wizards protect themselves and serve as their last line of defense. Asking to disable them was like asking him to expose his neck.

“You still seem suspicious after the incident at the Arena.”

In truth, Korund was making this request under Julian’s orders to overthrow him, but he nodded at Aiden’s words.

“We’re here to discuss the direction of our cooperation, but if you continue to be suspicious, there’s nothing I can do. You know what magical devices mean to a wizard.”

With a scraping sound, Aiden stood up from his seat, as if to signal that there was nothing more to say and the negotiation was over.

‘Oh no…’

Seeing this, Korund grew desperate. He couldn’t imagine what would happen if he didn’t follow Julian’s orders. As the pain from the injuries inflicted by Pintel began to throb, Korund stood up as well, just like Aiden.

And then…

“What are you doing?”

Clatter.

Korund placed the magical devices and wand he had been carrying on the table.

“We’re here to talk, so it’s better to eliminate any doubts.”

“What does that have to do with taking out magical devices?”

“The incident at the Arena. You planted a device on me with an eavesdropping spell at that time!”

To be honest, Korund didn’t know whether it was Aiden or someone else who cast the eavesdropping spell.

But right now, the truth of the matter wasn’t important. Korund knew he had to act regardless. His life, the honor of his family—everything was at stake, and he was increasingly aware of his growing impatience. His voice grew louder, and he felt sweat soaking his back. Moreover, Aiden’s disapproving gaze only amplified his discomfort.

“Let’s make one thing clear. The unfortunate incident back then has nothing to do with me.”

That fact is irrelevant now!

“But since you’re showing such a stance, I have no choice but to respond in kind.”

Saying this, Aiden began to remove his magical devices just as Korund had done. Earrings, rings, necklaces, and other jewelry were placed on the table. Once finished, Aiden sat back down.

“Is this enough?”

Seeing Aiden’s actions, Korund forced a servile smile and swallowed the rising fear.

‘Is this enough now, Julian? I’ve done my part.’

***

“It’s a barrier.”

Just as we were starting to feel close to the laboratory, a magical barrier appeared in front of Aileen and me, as if to confirm our suspicions. It was a spell that ordinary people wouldn’t notice, but anyone with some knowledge of ‘mana’ would instantly recognize it.

“I don’t know what kind it is, but one thing is certain: it’s a barrier that sends some kind of signal to the user.”

“Can’t we just deactivate it?”

“Do you remember when you entered my mansion? Even if you deactivate it, the owner will inevitably notice.”

Aileen inspected the barrier closely.

“The fact that there is an alarm spell installed in this barrier means they have something to hide inside.”

With a meaningful look in her eyes, Aileen stopped me as I slowly approached the barrier’s location.

“Don’t get too close. Sending an alarm is just one of its abilities; it’s likely not its only function.”

I knew that as well. Just by looking at it, I had a sense it would be troublesome.

‘A mechanism that fires multiple metal spheres upon explosion.’

It’s a commonly known fragmentation grenade-like trap. The problem is that even if I manage to disarm them using detection skills or ‘amazing intuition,’ the alarm would still reach Aiden.

‘Seeing that there’s a barrier, Korund must have refused my request.’

I didn’t have high expectations anyway. I just had to be satisfied that Aiden wasn’t here.

Schwing─!

I drew my sword. It wasn’t even necessary to use ‘Sombra’ to conceal the sword made of ‘Moonstone.’

“Wait! Are you thinking of cutting through the barrier?”

Aileen, watching me, looked at me with shocked eyes.

“No matter how skilled you are in swordsmanship, that’s impossible!”

“Stand back. Unless you want to get caught in the crossfire.”

Preparing to shield my entire body with ‘Sombra’ if necessary, I swung my sword.

Swoosh!

But my sword cut through not the barrier but the empty air. To be precise, the barrier vanished just before the Moonstone sword could touch it.

…Did Korund follow my request?

There’s no other way to explain this phenomenon. This barrier could only be deactivated if Aiden’s ‘magical device’ was away from his body, as described in the original story.

‘Good timing.’

As I thought this, I heard Aileen’s startled voice from behind.

“Impossible… Cutting through a barrier with a sword! That’s absurd…”

I know. But this was a coincidence. Just thinking about explaining this process gives me a headache. But is it necessary? Probably not…

Without further hesitation, I stepped into the laboratory.

“Wait a moment! How did you do that!? Disabling a complexly intertwined barrier without triggering it—was it because of that sword!?”

No, it was just a coincidence. I expected some hassle, but Aileen’s fuss didn’t last long. As soon as she took in the laboratory’s scenery, her expression turned serious.

It wasn’t just that. As time passed, her face grew more rigid, and she soon became pale.

“The arrangement and type of tools… they seem familiar.”

She noticed. This place is closely related to Aiden’s… no, to the ‘Donassien faction’ to which she belongs.

“What does this place have to do with our family…?”

To put it bluntly, it’s not just a relationship. This is where the heads of those wizards operate.

“No, I think I can guess without asking. Did you know?”

“Yes.”

“Then you might have already ‘identified’ who it is.”

“Aiden de Donassien.”

“What?”

Aileen was visibly shocked by my immediate response.

“He’s the owner of this laboratory.”

After speaking, I quietly watched Aileen’s face, preparing for any possible situation. If she defended her family head, I would have to make a tough decision in this situation.

“Are you trying to cover this up because you recognize the name?”

“Quietly… that’s impossible.”

Aileen seemed to have made up her mind. Judging by her words and actions, she, too, as a noble, couldn’t abandon the Donassien family.

“We have to expose this on a grand scale!”

Indeed, even if she is a collateral relative, blood is blood…

“We must report that illegal experiments were conducted in this facility to ‘Closed Eyes’!”

Round 67

Prev | TOC | Next

At Korea University in Seoul, Lee Seon-ah was struggling with the new assignment she had received.

“An interview with an Awakened? Who should I contact for that?”

To make matters worse, it was a group project.

Her friends, who were in the same group as her, were also worried about which guild to contact.

“Hey, come to think of it, isn’t Seon-ah’s brother an Awakened?”

“What? Really?”

All eyes turned to Seon-ah. Feeling a bit flustered by the sudden change in atmosphere, she waved her hands.

“Well, my brother is an Awakened, but….”

“Wow, that’s amazing! Then we can ask your brother for help!”

Seon-ah looked troubled.

She had always admired the Awakened, but she had hardly ever thought of her brother, Lee Kyu-seong, as an Awakened.

‘Recently, he joined the incredible guild called Ara Hongryeon, but it still doesn’t feel real….’

Seeing the crops he brought home lately, she was convinced he was indeed an Awakened, but his image was different from what people typically expected of an Awakened.

An Awakened doing farming!

Although she never said it out loud, she was honestly quite dumbfounded.

Especially as a big fan of the Awakened, Seon-ah experienced cognitive dissonance regarding her brother’s unusual abilities and activities.

That’s why she hardly ever mentioned that her brother was an Awakened.

Unfortunately, her closest friend, who knew this fact, had revealed it.

“…Alright, I’ll ask my brother. But don’t expect too much. It’s unlikely to work out.”

“Great! Wow, you just saved us. We might get this project done easily thanks to you!”

Contrary to Seon-ah’s words, her group members already seemed convinced that the interview was secured. Their relieved faces made Seon-ah feel slightly dizzy, but she tried to think positively.

‘Yeah. What’s wrong with my brother? He just has some unique abilities and uses them differently, but he’s still an Awakened, right?’

After all, Kyu-seong was a member of the famous Ara Hongryeon! There was nothing to be ashamed of!

…Or so she kept telling herself.

Seon-ah, having brought it up, immediately sent a message to her brother, Kyu-seong.

“Dear brother, how have you been? I have a small favor to ask of you….”

* * *

Stunned by an unexpected shower of water, I quickly regained my senses.

“Is this river water?”

Since the river was right beside us, I thought the water had reached us from there, but I tilted my head in confusion when I realized it was falling from the sky.

“Is it hot?”

No, it wasn’t hot, but it felt warm. The temperature was contrasting with the cold river water, and when I looked at the place where the water was spraying, I saw a small amount had already collected.

“Kyu-seong Kyu-seong! What is this! Is it a swimming pool?”

Ara was jumping around excitedly, and Gomgom was running around, covering its head because of the falling water.

“Wait a moment.”

I was slightly worried that there might be harmful substances in it. The water, gushing out from a crack in the rock, was emitting light steam and spreading an unfamiliar scent.

‘It’s not perfume, so what is this smell?’

It wasn’t unpleasant or foul.

It was a faintly spreading, pleasant fragrance. If I were to describe it as a sommelier, it smelled like freshly baked bread, old walnuts, lightly roasted coffee, and fresh wood.

Lick!

Before I knew it, Gomgom had stopped running and was licking the mysterious water that had filled the pool.

“I’m going to taste it too!”

“Uh….”

I wasn’t worried about Ara, who could digest anything, but I was a bit concerned about Gomgom.

I immediately grabbed Gomgom with both hands and lifted him up.

-Groan?

“You shouldn’t just eat anything you find.”

I wasn’t sure if he understood me, but Gomgom pointed at Ara as if to say, “Why can’t I do it if she can?” and struggled.

Sip!

“Oh! It’s tasty?”

Ara bent down, took a sip of the water, and tilted her head. It was unclear if she found it delicious or not.

Before that, is this even drinkable water?

This unexpected event temporarily halted our work. Leaving the mysterious liquid, which was still gushing out like a fountain, I decided to focus on the field first.

It should calm down eventually anyway.

And although it might have been just my imagination, I felt that the liquid was unlikely to be harmful.

“We came here to work, so let’s get to it.”

First, I pondered which of the seeds we brought should be planted first.

“Dungeon plants first. What should we name this one?”

Ara mentioned that the fruit, which tasted like bread, was a staple food here. We had plenty of seeds, so there was no problem planting them.

Since the slimes were responsible for growing them, there was nothing to worry about.

“Goso-goso!”

“…Goso-goso?”

Ara, your choice of words is quite risky.

Following Ara’s suggestion, who displayed a sense of naming that could easily be misunderstood, the bread-tasting plant was ultimately named “Goso-goso.”

…Is this right?

“So, should we allocate about 200 pyeong for Goso-goso?”

I don’t know how much the yield will be.

Since more is better, I decided to use the entire 1,000-pyeong field we just made for planting Goso-goso.

Then what about the other seeds?

‘Chili peppers, lettuce, onions, garlic!’

Since we decided this way, I’ll make another 1,000 pyeong for each of the remaining crops. In fact, compared to real farmers, 1,000 pyeong isn’t that large.

The difference is that, unlike them, I’m not mass-producing a single crop but growing various kinds of crops in smaller quantities.

This is all possible thanks to the excellent workers, the slimes.

“Ara, we need to make more fields.”

“Ooh! Let’s plow them all up!!”

Ara, with a serious face, raised her hoe and shouted a battle cry.

I asked Ara to make four more 1,000-pyeong plots. While Ara was plowing the fields, I planted Goso-goso seeds in the first field.

“Carefully, carefully….”

-Growl?

Gomgom approached, tilting his head, thinking I had called him. Then, seeing what I was doing, he started to mimic me.

He clumsily dug up the soil, placed a stone in it, and covered it nicely.

I couldn’t help but smile.

“Gomgom, do you want to try it too?”

-Growl!

I gave him a few seeds.

Although clumsy, he started planting the seeds in the field with some effort.

Planting them like this might be a bit troublesome when growing or harvesting later, but it was fine.

After all, the slimes would be the ones having a hard time, not me.

“…I feel like I’m turning into a ruthless landlord for a moment….”

Is it just my imagination? I’m a slime welfare officer.

The task of planting the seeds was entirely handled by me and Gomgom. Meanwhile, the slimes were busy flitting around, sometimes watching Ara, sometimes coming to watch me and Gomgom, playing freely.

“Whew, this is the hardest part.”

In fact, since others did the plowing and all other farming tasks, sowing the seeds felt particularly hard.

However, manually planting seeds without the help of machinery was quite a strenuous task.

“It looks like I’ve planted about 200 pyeong now.”

Although Gomgom was trying to help, with his clumsy movements, he was planting seeds at a rate of about one per minute. So, most of the work was still done by me.

“Wow! I plowed it all up!”

Ara, who had already plowed up 4,000 pyeong of land, came running to me, looking triumphant.

I praised her, patted her head, and told her to eat the Layla and sweet potatoes I brought as snacks.

“Sweet potatoes~ Sweet potatoes~!”

When Ara went to rummage through the backpack, Gomgom got up awkwardly and waddled after her. The scene reminded me of a childhood storybook, making me smile unknowingly.

“Hup! Let’s work hard!”

Though it was simple labor, it just took time; as an Awakened, my stamina and body were perfectly fine.

With renewed determination, I started planting the seeds again.

* * *

“Wow, good job!”

“Will there be a lot of delicious things coming out?”

“Of course!”

In the end, we did it.

In fact, except for the Goso-goso seeds, I had brought enough seeds for only about 200 pyeong for the other crops, so planting the total 1,800 pyeong of land was enough.

Moreover, towards the end, Ara, who had eaten a snack, helped me, making the work much faster and easier.

‘Chili peppers, lettuce, onions, and garlic, each 200 pyeong. And 1,000 pyeong for Goso-goso. With such a large area, managing it all will be….’

I had already designated a slime to manage the Gluttony Dungeon farm. That slime was none other than!

“Mark2! From now on, you’re in charge here!”

Squish!

Since I had already hinted at it before coming here, Mark2 wasn’t surprised and simply squished. And it wasn’t just him.

“Rookies! You’ll be living here too!”

Squirm!?

The new rookies seemed startled by the unexpected announcement.

But soon, they looked around and seemed to like it, squishing with satisfaction.

Even I thought this place was much better than the Infinite Dungeon.

‘Hmm, it’s still a bit too barren, though.’

Even though they were slimes, they were my precious family. There should at least be some shelter from the wind and rain.

And if I was going to build such a place, I wanted to create a space for myself as well.

‘Construction! We need construction!’

And I know an expert in this field!

Someone very close to me!

“Dad!”

Although he now worked in wallpapering and interior design, my father was actually a builder. He used to be the president of a small construction company, but he went bankrupt because he over-invested in my endeavors.

Now that he had barely repaid his debts, I would earn money and ask him to handle the construction here.

‘…I feel like I’m just making him work when I should be showing filial piety.’

I pondered for a moment but couldn’t think of a better plan. I would just subtly mention it to him. I should bring him here soon to show him the dungeon.

Now, let’s focus on farming first.

“My turn is over! I’m passing the turn!”

The slimes, looking at me as if I was speaking nonsense, started moving. They began crawling around the dry field, making it moist.

They seemed to be working on something, as they were moving much more slowly than usual.

Given the large area, it seemed like it would take some time.

So, I decided to leave the field to them and go check on the Alfheims.

‘I need to check if the Meluca flowers are growing well and give Poispois’s poison a try.’

I’d also collect the mushrooms that Gomgom mentioned.

Gomgom would probably find them for me.

I packed up the camping gear and took Bokkeum with me.

Mark2 and the two Rookies, who remained in the field, waved us off and then focused back on their work.

“Do they really like working that much?”

“It’s fun!”

Since Ara was also a slime, it was probably not a guess or a lie. Although I already knew this, it was still an incomprehensible kind of fun for a human like me.

Is work… fun?

“Let’s head out.”

“Let’s go!”

This time, I planned to head straight toward the World Tree without looking around.

With Bokkeum on my head and Gomgom in Ara’s arms, we walked straight ahead without distractions, and soon the edge of the forest came into view. It took about two hours, which was quite fast.

‘It took half a day last time, so this is a significant improvement.’

This was the difference between traveling a familiar path and an unfamiliar one.

As we reached the edge, I considered taking a short break and looked at Ara, whose gaze was curious.

“What are you looking at?”

“That!”

“Hmm?”

Turning my gaze, a sudden strong wind hit us.

Whooosh—-!!

“Whoa! What’s this!”

I instinctively closed and reopened my eyes, then froze at the sight before me.

Whooosh-!

A massive monster exuding immense pressure.

It had the appearance of a four-legged beast, resembling a creature from mythology.

“Haetae?”

“Deputy Kang, Deputy Kang!”

Despite the urgent voice of Manager Park calling out to him, Deputy Kang did not respond. He had already decided to quit the company and did not want to get involved any further.

Seeing no response, Manager Park quickly approached him.

“Deputy Kang! Could you help me with my presentation related to the AI project…?”

Manager Park shamelessly mentioned the project he was in charge of and asked for help. Kang thought that Manager Park was indeed a deeply rooted member of the “Strategic Planning Team.” In a broad sense, the goal of strategic planning is to achieve the company’s objectives effectively with limited resources. In that sense, Manager Park’s actions of removing Kang’s name from the report to be submitted to the Executive Director and the CEO seemed like the work of a strategist racing toward promotion.

Kang was dumbfounded by Manager Park’s request for help without considering the work Kang had done.

“I believe there is only one person assigned to this project, not two. As someone who is not the assigned person, how can I dare to help?”

At Kang’s curt reply, Manager Park got angry and suddenly shouted at him.

“Hey, you punk! Kang Seong-jin, even if your superior speaks nicely, what’s with that attitude?”

Manager Park’s yell made Kang look at him coldly. Manager Park felt a shiver run down his spine at Kang’s calm gaze.

“I have been grateful to you all this time.”

“W-what do you mean!”

Manager Park’s heart sank at Kang’s emotionless words. The situation where the meeting with the CEO about the project was scheduled earlier than expected was problematic if the working-level person, Kang, was missing.

“Deputy Kang, do you think the company is a joke? Why, are you thinking of resigning if you don’t like it?”

Manager Park, thinking that Kang wouldn’t resign in these difficult economic times, tried to intimidate him. But Kang, true to his Strategic Planning Team nature, showed his determination straightforwardly.

“I will resign.”

Hadn’t Manager Park pointed out every day that in strategic planning, one should “answer first”? Kang turned on the intranet, clicked on the HR tab, and began to write his resignation letter.

Seeing the screen in front of him, Manager Park’s lips trembled, but he began to coax Seong-jin nicely.

“Deputy Kang, no matter how hard the company is, it’s hell outside, you know? Calm down and tell me what you want.”

“I have nothing to say.”

Seeing Kang focused on writing his resignation form, Manager Park’s insides began to burn with anxiety.

“Deputy Kang… can’t you help me just this once? The meeting with the CEO is at 7 o’clock today…”

Despite Manager Park’s desperate voice, Kang was unmoved, forcing him to acknowledge his mistake.

“I made a mistake… right? I’ll put your name back, so just help me this once.”

“Hmm…?”

“I’ll definitely give you the highest rating in next month’s performance evaluation.”

Promotion in the Strategic Planning Team isn’t necessarily a “carrot.” Given that he was already not able to go home, the likelihood of giving up weekends was high if he got promoted. He was, however, curious about the CEO’s reaction to his project.

“In addition to the performance evaluation, I will give the presentation this time.”

“That won’t do!”

The presentation is the highlight of the project. The manager couldn’t yield that.

As Seong-jin turned his head back and silently resumed typing, the greed that had briefly risen in Manager Park’s eyes quickly faded away.

“Alright… Deputy Kang can give the presentation.”

“I will prepare the materials by 7 o’clock.”

“Can you do it? Time is tight.”

Contrary to Manager Park’s anxious voice, Kang nodded calmly. The current time was 5:30 PM. It was not uncommon for the final decision-maker’s meeting schedule to change in the planning team. Anticipating such a situation, Kang had already prepared the presentation materials but had not handed them over to Manager Park.

An hour and a half later, as Kang and Manager Park entered the conference room and finished preparing for the presentation, the CEO, the Vice President of the Strategic Planning Team, and the former Executive Director entered.

“Manager Park, are you ready?”

At that, Manager Park, with an awkward smile, pointed to Seong-jin and said.

“Executive Director, today, Deputy Kang, who prepared the materials with me, will be giving the presentation. Since the CEO might want more detailed information, we have prepared the working-level personnel.”

At Manager Park’s words, the former Executive Director’s eyes flared up. The CEO and the Vice President seemed to understand the situation but proceeded with the presentation first.

Luckily, Deputy Kang, known for his competence, would be giving the presentation.

“Hello, everyone. I will begin the presentation on the AI project, ‘Janus.'”

Kang felt everyone become engrossed in his presentation. The CEO, particularly interested in the project, asked questions intermittently.

“What do you think is the first task that needs to be prioritized for implementing the Janus project?”

“The first task that needs to be prioritized is data cleansing. The uniformity of the data we currently have is about 30%, so a data-related expert needs to join the task force team at the start of the project.”

Seeing Deputy Kang present specific numbers, a satisfied expression appeared on the former Executive Director’s face. However, the CEO’s unchanged expression throughout the presentation caused concern for the Vice President, the former Executive Director, and Manager Park.

“I heard the presentation well. Is your name Deputy Kang Seong-jin?”

“Yes, CEO.”

“If you were the CEO, why do you think this project is a must?”

“Because it can improve work productivity and save costs. Janus can replace repetitive tasks, which we estimate account for about 10% of the total work time. This is expected to save about 5% of the company’s labor costs.”

With a concise, essential, and number-specific answer, the CEO’s eyes flashed with a momentary greed for Kang, and finally, a smile spread across his face.

“That was a very satisfactory presentation.”

At the CEO’s words, everyone in the meeting room breathed a sigh of relief. The CEO’s shocking follow-up statement brought joy to one face and sighs to others.

“From today, this project will be managed by Deputy Kang, not as a Deputy but as a Manager.”

The word “Manager” sent a thrilling sensation down Seong-jin’s spine. The memories of working day and night, even on weekends, flashed through Seong-jin’s mind.

“Thank you, CEO! I will do my best.”

Manager Park, who had regained his composure, cautiously spoke.

“CEO…? Isn’t this decision a bit hasty…?”

At that, the CEO, who had been about to leave, paused, smiled at him, and said.

“Manager Park? Are you in a position to say such things? Do you think I’m unaware of everything and just let it slide? Remember, there won’t be a second time.”

Manager Park turned pale, while the Vice President and the former Executive Director clicked their tongues and shook their heads in disapproval. After the CEO left first, the Vice President and the former Executive Director patted Seong-jin on the shoulder with words of encouragement before leaving the room.

The resentment and regret in Manager Park’s eyes were palpable as he had missed the promotion. Seong-jin casually ignored that look and said.

“Manager Park, I will be leaving work now.”

At Seong-jin’s words, Manager Park nodded absentmindedly.

Seong-jin left work, went to a convenience store near the company, and bought four cans of beer for 11,000 won, celebrating alone. He immediately drank one can, feeling a sense of intoxication. He must have been more excited than he realized. Smiling to himself, he let his imagination run wild about his future, and before he knew it, he arrived at the bus stop.

Creeeak.

Isn’t it said that life’s ups and downs are unpredictable? To get promoted on the day he decided to quit! Even the village bus arrived and opened its doors right in front of him, with all the seats empty.

Beep!

They say small fortunes follow bigger ones. The author of the web novel “The Prince’s Two Faces,” which he only read briefly during meals, had updated an unplanned extra chapter just for him.

Having purchased the latest chapter, Seong-jin felt a catharsis as he read about the prince who mercilessly dealt with his enemies to become the emperor.

“The one who becomes the sun of the empire kills even his brother.”

Feeling a sense of satisfaction as he read about Kyle beheading the third prince who begged for his life, Seong-jin felt as if he might someday cut off the incompetent Manager Park with his own hands.

As he slowly scrolled through his phone, he suddenly heard a horn and felt a strong impact hit his body.

Honk!

Bang!

Seong-jin felt nauseous from the sudden shock, tasting something metallic in his mouth. Just when everything seemed to be coming together.

He fought to keep his eyes open, feeling like he would never wake up again if he closed them. But he couldn’t overcome the weight of his eyelids.

‘Damn… Damn…’

When Seong-jin opened his eyes, he heard loud voices all around him.

“Your Majesty, the volume of goods entering the empire has doubled. If we don’t resolve the sudden increase in volume, it will cause great chaos.”

“What is the cause?”

“Since the trade routes with the kingdoms Your Majesty conquered have officially opened, goods and merchants are rapidly gathering in the capital.”

Seong-jin was jolted awake at the word “Your Majesty.”

‘Where am I?’

As he opened his eyes and looked around, he saw the scene of a French palace he had only seen on TV. The dazzling golden decorations unmistakably indicated that he was in a royal palace.

While Seong-jin was bewildered by the exotic scenery, a man with red hair and ruby eyes beside him stepped forward and spoke.

“Your Majesty, may I say something?”

Seong-jin tilted his head at the sight of the man with red hair and red eyes. In the novel he had been reading, “The Prince’s Two Faces,” the protagonist was described as having red hair and red eyes.

‘No way…’

“Your Majesty, I think that as the empire’s situation improves, such issues will become more frequent.”

The emperor’s blood-red eyes stared at the man assumed to be Kyle.

“Wouldn’t this be a good opportunity to reorganize the empire’s capital?”

The emperor looked at a white-haired man beside him.

“It’s not a bad idea, but the roads will be even more congested during the construction period. Additionally, we need to consider where to source the additional funds.”

The red-haired man was about to respond, but the emperor stopped him.

The emperor turned his head quietly and asked a young man with the same hair color as him, wearing luxurious clothes.

“Adrian, what is your opinion?”

“I-I’m sorry…”

This prince, bowing his head with a timid voice, was looked at with disdain by the emperor, who then turned to look at Seong-jin.

When the emperor looked at him, Seong-jin noticed his expression twitch with irritation.

“Ian, what do you think?”

At the mention of “Ian,” Seong-jin looked around and realized that everyone was looking at him, indicating that “Ian” referred to him.

‘Ian… Ian!’

Seong-jin’s eyes widened in realization.

‘Ian Helios,’ the third prince of the empire, known as the ‘incompetent fool’ in the novel.

‘Incompetent fool.’

Thinking that the red-haired prince next to him might be the one who would eventually behead him, Seong-jin felt a chill run down his spine.

When Seong-jin did not answer, the emperor spoke again in an angry tone.

“Ian! Answer me!”

In the midst of his confusion and the emperor’s rage-filled voice, Seong-jin felt his mind going blank but soon composed himself. Working in the strategic planning team, he knew how dangerous it was to incur the wrath of the final decision-maker.

The right decision should be, of course, “Answer First,” in a deductive manner.

Survival 126

Prev I TOC I Next

The northern night is harsh.

First of all, the temperature is severe.

“Ugh… it’s freezing.”

Even though I was bundled up in winter gear, the cold wind cut through it all.

If it ended there, I could just endure it alone, which would be fortunate.

-Awooo.

Mixed in with the cold, the howls of beasts echoed in my ears.

The fierce wildlife and monsters of the north are mostly nocturnal.

The night was their time.

‘Ugh, my luck. If it weren’t for that relic….’

Moving alone at night,

My sigh, along with a white puff of breath, fell onto the snow.

Even as I moved, yellow flashes occasionally appeared beyond the darkness.

Their owners were closely watching me.

‘At least they don’t seem to be attacking.’

It’s not that they’re hard to deal with.

But dealing with one or a few is manageable; if a large number swarmed, it would not only take time but also attract other monsters, creating even more trouble.

It was fortunate in misfortune.

Their behavior was purely out of caution.

They didn’t seem to regard me as their dinner.

And,

The only reason creatures that would normally attack without hesitation were now watching from a distance was simple.

-Growl…

Several eyes that had been watching me quickly withdrew in response to Friede’s low growl beside me.

“To think I’d benefit from you one day.”

-Bark!

Originally, I intended to leave it at the academy.

Who would have thought?

Managing it would become such an issue.

‘Who knew they would have such a strong aversion to monsters.’

In the north, monsters are seen as targets for hunting and honorable prey,

But in other regions, especially the central ones, it’s different.

“You… you want me to take care of this?”

“Yeah, Friede particularly likes jerky. Just until Luciana and I return from our dispatch lessons….”

“I’m sorry! Please forgive me! If I’ve done anything wrong during my employment, please punish me in another way!”

Despite being a creature long tamed by humans and thus safe, what’s so scary about this pig or wolf?

Even when I asked them to take care of Friede, the servants, knowing it was a monster, were terrified.

They couldn’t outright refuse, given their employment status and my noble standing.

But their fear of monsters seemed to surpass that.

The only one who wasn’t afraid was Bathory.

“What are you talking about? Keep that wild animal here? Of course, I’ll follow you to the land ruled by the descendant of Warrior!”

“You’re not much help in the north because of your contract with the duke, are you?”

“You say such hurtful things so casually.”

I had to work hard to console her, holding her shoulder as she pouted.

‘I mean, aren’t you supposed to be a high-ranking demon? Why are you so sensitive?’

In the end, I had to bring both Bathory and Friede to the north.

At least they listened well, so I thought it wouldn’t be too much trouble.

-It turns out that wolf suppresses the surrounding creatures better than I thought. I only expected it to be useful as a hunting dog.

-It’s a Direwolf, after all, even if it’s been tamed by humans.

The top predator of the northern ecosystem.

True to its reputation as one of the top three monsters, seeing Friede made the lesser creatures scatter on their own.

“Well done.”

-Bark!

I wondered if the predators watching from afar knew.

Friede, this creature that looks like a mix between a pig and a wolf, was already full from the jerky I had thrown.

-By the way, are you sure? That the Wendigo monster is a Doppelganger?

-I didn’t know at first. I only realized after I cut it.

I made a sorrowful face towards the shadow reflecting my face.

Bathory believed I was the Doppelganger king.

Acting was essential.

-I never thought my kin would be treated as monsters and targeted for extermination. At least in the Evildon Empire, it wasn’t like this. It seems my kin had to leave the empire while I was away.

It wasn’t hard to speak in a somber tone.

I slightly roughened my voice, letting it sound scratchy.

Added a few spoonfuls of emotions from remembering Luciana’s suspicions.

A perfectly toned voice was etched into my performance.

-Don’t push yourself too hard. Remember, a king’s duty is to care for his people.

Bathory busied herself trying to comfort me.

That sight was…

…unexpectedly amusing.

I felt a twinge of guilt towards her.

But I couldn’t help the subtle smile tugging at my lips from the gentle pleasure.

‘At first, I found it annoying to constantly maintain a persona and occasionally deal with her fits at odd moments.’

Now, facing a difficult quest, I felt some of my stress ease in this brief moment of deceiving Bathory.

The sensation of manipulating someone’s emotions!

The subtle sense of dominance from Bathory’s current actions made my lips twitch.

“Ahem! Friede, come here.”

If I stayed still, Bathory might catch on to my deceit.

I cleared my throat to rearrange my expression.

“Let’s keep moving. I’m freezing without fur like you.”

-Bark!

Friede seemed to enjoy the rare walk in its homeland.

Hopping around, leaving footprints in the snow, its white fur blending naturally as camouflage.

-Screech, screech…

-Squawk…

Then.

Distant howls reached my ears.

I had strayed too far from the main group, making it difficult to receive support in battle.

‘But with more monsters around, it’s an opportunity.’

Thanks to Friede, my safety was somewhat guaranteed.

Crisis equals opportunity.

The abundance of monsters meant a higher chance of encountering the Wendigo.

It was fortunate for me, who needed to help them.

“Let’s head to the coniferous forest.”

I led Friede to the place where I had previously defeated a Wendigo.

The logs that had been scattered by the Wendigo’s charge.

The scattered nuts and the wildlife that had come to eat them.

Even the northern goblin-like monsters hunting them.

“It’s a mess.”

The desired Wendigo was nowhere to be found, only a bunch of random creatures.

I kicked an innocent tree.

‘Well, one of their kin was killed. Of course, they’d be cautious.’

A Wendigo is not a monster.

Though they can’t even speak, they are still a kind of demon.

Was it a coincidence they hid after the recent sacrifice?

Or were they organizing and concealing themselves?

It wasn’t hard to deduce that the latter was more likely.

“What do you plan to do?”

“Well, we’ll find out as we dig around.”

There were plenty of ways to search.

They had already caused enough human casualties to warrant support from the academy in the north.

“Friede, here’s some jerky.”

I held out my hand to the creature who now adeptly caught anything I threw.

“Okay, if you perform your task well, I’ll give you more jerky as a reward. See this black powder?”

-Bark.

“Smell it. You need to find this.”

The last traces of the Wendigo had no scent to me.

But it would be different for Friede.

‘They say a dog’s sense of smell is much better than a human’s.’

And Friede, having been brought straight from the wild, would be even better.

Like a hunting dog remembers the scent of blood and animals.

Friede rubbed its nose against my hand a few times.

“If it were blood, I’d have found it by now.”

“Ha ha… Doppelgangers can’t manage blood well.”

“That’s true. The moment it touches the air, it evaporates and turns into black powder. In that sense, you are special.”

A cold sweat trickled down my neck.

If I twisted her words, Bathory was essentially saying I wasn’t a typical Doppelganger.

But sometimes, misconceptions can cover fatal errors.

Like now, when Bathory accepted the misunderstanding naturally.

‘Phew, that was close.’

I discreetly wiped the sweat and struggled to keep my eyes from forming a crescent.

Call it thrill.

Even in these dangerous moments, deceiving Bathory brought a proportionate amount of joy.

‘But I must be careful. Once a seed of suspicion sprouts, it spreads uncontrollably.’

The solution was simple.

Show Bathory undeniable proof that I was the Doppelganger king.

‘Which is why securing Shadow is essential.’

-Growl…

While I was deep in thought,

Friede bared its gums and growled.

Its tail bristled, hinting at its anger.

“What? Does the smell bother you that much? If you don’t like it, stop sniffing. Here, have some jerky to calm down.”

I offered it jerky to soothe its mood.

But Friede ignored its favorite snack and bit onto my pant leg.

Then, as if to lead me somewhere, it let go and dashed through the coniferous forest.

“Why is that beast so excited?”

“Could it be? It might have really found something!”

I had to admit.

Friede wasn’t just a jerky-eating pig.

It was a competent Direwolf, skilled at tracking prey.

I hurriedly followed Friede, who had already vanished from sight.

Fortunately, the light snowfall hadn’t erased its tracks on the ground.

-Bark! Bark!

After a while of chasing, I finally saw Friede barking at me from the middle of the snowy field.

“I can’t see anything. What did you find?”

“You can’t expect results immediately.”

Bathory was right.

There was nothing but a vast expanse of snow.

It was a place with nothing but swirling snowflakes and cold wind.

“Ugh, what a waste. Friede, let’s go back.”

After a long search, dawn was breaking.

I couldn’t go without sleep, so I’d have to catch some sleep during the day.

-Bark! Growl!

But despite my command, Fried was busy barking, urging me to come over.

“Hey, let’s go back. You’re tired too. We need to rest well in a warm place for tomorrow’s search….”

As I scolded and approached the still-barking Friede,

[A Dungeon, ‘Wendigo’s Sanctuary,’ has been discovered.]

A translucent status window blocked my path.

[Wendigo’s Sanctuary]

[The Wendigo, one of the three great northern monsters, lives in packs.]

[Their reason for living in packs is not due to survival advantages like other wild animals or exceptional organization like the Direwolves.]

[Faith.]

[With a highly intelligent leader at the forefront, Wendigos worship an unknown god.]

[Uncover their secrets and obtain the relics possessed by the monsters.]

It had been a while since I’d seen a dungeon notification.

But I rubbed my eyes, wondering if I had seen it right.

‘This isn’t what I know.’

In the original, the dungeon’s name was ‘Wendigo Habitat,’ and though I don’t remember the details clearly, it was about eliminating a monster that threatened the northern residents.

Faith and a leader?

‘No, this isn’t the time to nitpick! It’s the Wendigo dungeon I’ve been looking for! Where’s the entrance?!’

– Dig!

That’s when I noticed Friede digging at the ground with its front paws.

“Is there something underground?”

-Bark!

It’s a clever creature that understands human speech.

It barked vigorously and nodded, making it impossible not to believe it.

I immediately took a shovel out of my backpack.

While it was excellent for excavation, it was also useful for its intended purpose of digging into the ground.

A true Korean man should be able to dig at least one trench with a shovel. Drawing on my modern experience, I started digging efficiently.

“Do you need help? I can come out of the shadows and assist.”

“No need. This requires technique. Bathory, please let your servants handle this and don’t dirty your hands.”

“…Hmm. Still, it bothers me to do nothing while that creature helps you selflessly.”

What’s this?

Bathory saying something commendable?

Thanks to that, I dug even faster.

After shoveling for a while,

-Clang!

Finally, I hit something.

It was a clear sound that neither snow nor earth could produce.

A sound of metal stRickyng metal.

At the same time,

-The one who is worthy has knocked on the door.

A hoarse voice, like that of an old man at the end of his life, strained to speak.

However, the telepathic message, filled with dense magic, resonated in my head.

It wasn’t just a telepathic message.

A great magic surged from the shovel, enveloping my body.

It forcefully pulled me into the ground.

‘This, this is insane! Is this a live burial?!’

I tried to resist, but as a novice mage, I was powerless.

-Bark! Bark!

“What’s happening?!”

-Those without qualifications, leave.

“Be careful Frost Mane! I can’t follow you…!”

With Bathory’s urgent voice,

My consciousness gradually faded.

Act 114

Prev I TOC I Next

As Aileen walked through the underground waterway, she felt a strange sense of déjà vu.

‘Has something like this happened before?’ she wondered. The feeling was not just because of the musty smell from the neglected waterway. Just moments ago, the words the Black Knight had uttered while helping her seemed oddly familiar.

‘It’s certainly the first time I’ve met him at the mansion, so why do I feel this sense of déjà vu?’ she thought. A person wearing such a grotesque and conspicuous mask would definitely be memorable if they had met before.

– “Is it necessary to know? It’s a secret.”

But why did those words sound so familiar? “It’s a secret… It’s a secret…” The words echoed in her mind, and she suddenly recalled an incident that had occurred at the old school building.

A man who was always smiling, with eyes that made it hard to read his emotions.

‘Come to think of it, wasn’t the situation back then similar to now?’ Aileen murmured quietly to herself. As she thought about it, she realized that the situations were indeed similar. Julian had discovered a small demon hiding in the old school building and had dismissed the method as a “secret.”

Realizing this, Aileen looked up and followed the back of the Black Knight who was walking ahead of her. ‘Their builds are similar.’ Besides that, there were many other similarities. First, they both used swords. Also, their swordsmanship was remarkably superior.

‘But other than that…?’ Upon closer thought, there were no significant commonalities. While they both used swords and were skilled in swordsmanship, the swords they used were different. The Black Knight’s sword was as black as a shadow and gave off a sticky feeling, unlike the Moonlight Sword.

‘Moreover…’ The aura emanating from the Black Knight was also noble, like that of an aristocrat, but its direction was different from Julian’s. Additionally, Julian’s unique speech and behavior could not be easily imitated.

‘Even with effort, it might be possible.’

But knowing Julian’s personality, he would never compromise. He was a man who would rather drown in his pride than bow his head, always smiling even while walking a razor’s edge.

“You’re late. If you don’t keep up, I’ll leave you behind.” Considering all these points, Aileen was well aware that the Black Knight was far removed from Julian. However, the doubt in her heart remained.

‘Could the Black Knight be Julian?’ she wondered. She found this person, who was watching her, to be suspicious. “Sorry, I’m coming now.”

***

Drip, drop.

A drop of sweat slid down his cheek, hung on his chin, and fell to the ground. Watching this, Korund felt acutely aware of how nervous and intimidated he was.

‘Unexpected,’ he thought. He had not anticipated that Pintel would be under the command of Julian, a branch of the Crypart family. How could he have predicted it? Pintel had shared his pureblood ideology and was one of the wizards expanding his influence through it. Who could have foreseen that Pintel would reject his power and choose the tumor known as Julian?

“Sir Korund, while you wait for the young master, may I bring you something to drink?” Korund flinched at the voice behind him. Though it was just a servant speaking, recent events with Pintel had left his mind in chaos.

The fact that Bishop Pintel, who was expected not to side with Julian, was actually supporting him made everyone question, “Could it be?”

“Y-yeah,” Korund stammered.

Of course, there was no way Julian could have bribed even this servant. No matter how cunning Julian was, it would be a bad move to enlist commoners, let alone nobility.

“Young Master Joshua will be here shortly. I apologize for the wait,” the servant said.

Korund nodded at the servant’s words, sighed deeply, and looked around. He was currently at the mansion of the Crypart family. Normally, he taught ‘mana manipulation’ to Joshua, the youngest member of the Crypart family, one of the four great families of the empire. Despite having been kidnapped and confined, he couldn’t postpone the private lesson. The prestige of the four great families of the empire was that significant.

“If this is the main house of the Crypart family, they must detest Julian… The family’s disgrace. Not a painful finger but one that should disappear. Everyone knows the treatment Julian receives from the Crypart family. If I reveal Julian’s behavior here…?”

As a bishop of the Dawn Society and one of the many nobles of the empire.

“Sir Korund, I apologize for being late.” Lost in thought, Korund swallowed his anger and smiled as he saw Joshua entering the room.

“It’s alright, young master.”

“Thank you. But Sir Korund, what happened to your face?” Joshua asked.

At Joshua’s question, Korund felt the stinging pain of his wound. Julian’s warning echoed in his mind again. The image of Julian smiling slyly while subtly grasping his sword hilt surfaced, and fear seeped back into Korund’s heart. The thought of exposing Julian’s behavior began to bury itself deep in his chest. Upon reflection, there was very little he could discuss without revealing the Dawn Society. Moreover, Julian wouldn’t suffer much even if his reputation was tarnished. His name was already stained black, so further smears would be meaningless.

“Haha, I had a small accident during an experiment. It’s nothing for you to worry about, young master,” Korund said, choosing to keep his words to himself.

Joshua, watching Korund, had other thoughts.

‘I never imagined that Brother Herand would support Julian in the family meeting.’

Joshua felt the narrowing of his position within the family through the family meetings. Even his father, Oben, the head of the Crypart family, didn’t seem to outright despise Julian.

‘The position of the next family head is in jeopardy.’

Even the dim-witted could see the changing atmosphere. ‘But I can’t openly express my dissatisfaction… Julian remains silent about my use of the fake demon horn, the replica, to cause a disturbance.’

Julian holds the leash.

Moreover, he could no longer simply suggest to the family members that they deal with Julian. With positive stories about Julian beginning to surface, it was hard to tell who was on Julian’s side.

‘The solution must come from elsewhere,’ Joshua thought, realizing that the answer was right in front of him.

Wizards fundamentally advocate for “pure-blood ideology.” If you trace their lineage, their blood purity is far from “pure-blood,” but they fabricate this idea to solidify their status.

“Teacher Korund, you are one of the wizards who follow pure-blood ideology,”

Supporters who could back him and condemn Julian. While bringing external forces into a dirty family feud was unappealing, Joshua was desperate to secure the position of the family head, especially with Brother Herand’s strange behavior lately.

“In that case, that’s a relief. I thought the recent ‘troublemaker’ who returned to the country caused some issues.”

“Troublemaker… you say?” Korund looked puzzled, and Joshua smirked internally.

“Yes, our family’s tumor, Julian Crypart Frason. Didn’t he recently return from the Holy Nation?”

“Haha… Surely not.”

“In my heart, I want to deal with him for the sake of the family,” Joshua subtly revealed his intentions.

“You must dislike him that much. Sir Julian would be saddened,” Korund remarked.

“It doesn’t matter if he’s sad. It’s the result of his actions,” Joshua replied.

Though Joshua had limited opportunities to socialize as an adult, he was smart enough to understand what wizards liked. Connections with nobles and, most importantly, a lot of money. Magical research required astronomical amounts of money, enough to shake even an ordinary noble family.

“The chair of the noble council and former head of the Crypart family, Lord Orun, doesn’t seem to want to see Julian rampaging around anymore,” Joshua dropped the hint.

Orun Crypart, the real power behind the Crypart family, one of the four great families, and the chair of the noble council. Joshua hadn’t conveyed his intentions to his grandfather yet, but he knew that Orun vaguely wanted him to be the next family head. With his oldest brother in the monastery, the second brother being a wastrel, the third brother lacking the ambition fitting for the head of a great family, and Julian, a mere branch family member acting as the empire’s lapdog, none of them were satisfactory to Orun.

During this time of uncertainty, Joshua was born. Orun had educated Joshua from a young age to prevent him from going astray like the other bloodlines.

“You are the one to succeed the Crypart family,” Orun always reiterated to Joshua, making it seem natural to him. However, Julian’s position had been steadily rising recently.

Joshua surmised that his grandfather would also want to deal with Julian. For this reason, Joshua made his proposal to Korund.

“I can arrange for you to connect with Orun Crypart, so lend your strength to deal with Julian.”

This was a proposal that any ordinary wizard family would drool over. Orun Crypart, the chair of the noble council, held immense power, even capable of influencing the Mage Tower. Aligning with him could significantly reduce the astronomical costs associated with magical research.

“How about it? As a wizard, you can’t refuse, right?” Joshua’s pride swelled at the thought of making an offer that no ordinary wizard noble could resist.

However…

‘Is this guy crazy…?’

Korund’s reaction was the complete opposite.

‘Why is he suddenly making this proposal?’

A connection with Orun Crypart. Korund knew this was no small matter. Normally, he would have accepted the proposal without hesitation and lent a hand in dealing with someone like Julian.

The problem was…

‘Why at this timing…?’

His body began to ache from his wounds again, and the events of ‘that day’ started to flash in his mind. The image of Pintel, eyes wide with madness, wildly swinging his staff.

“Could this be…?”

If not, such a proposal wouldn’t come at this time.

Korund swallowed hard, gathering the courage to speak.

“Y-Young Master Joshua, I’ll pretend I didn’t hear anything today.”

“…What?”

“Let’s postpone today’s lesson. I’m not feeling well…”

Ignoring Joshua’s slightly confused response, Korund quickly gathered his coat and bag, stood up, and hurried out. Even while getting up, the wounds from being struck by the staff throbbed, prompting him to leave the Crypart mansion in haste.

“What on earth…?”

In the quiet room, Joshua muttered to himself. Had he misspoken? No, upon careful thought, it didn’t seem so.

Then why had Korund left the room as if terrified and pursued?

Joshua had no way of knowing.

Round 66

“Yum yum!”

Growl—!

Watching them eat so deliciously made my stomach rumble.

But, as an adult, I began handing out the potato pancakes to the kids first.

-Growl?

The slimes and Ara just ate whatever I handed them without thinking, but Gomgom seemed fascinated.

For a moment, Gomgom held the potato pancake I gave him with both paws, flipping it around curiously, until Ara scolded him.

“Don’t play with your food!”

-Roar!

Gomgom flinched and then immediately spread his paws to threaten Ara. His small paws fiercely raised beside his face.

Flash!

At that moment, Ara’s eyes gleamed. In an instant, the potato pancake that had been on Gomgom’s paw disappeared.

“Yum yum!”

-Roar, roar?!

Gomgom, with a flustered face, desperately searched for the potato pancake that had vanished from his paw. But he couldn’t retrieve the pancake that had already disappeared into Ara’s mouth.

-Roar, roar!

“Alright, alright. There’s more, so don’t cry.”

I squatted down and handed another potato pancake to the pouting Gomgom, who was clutching my waist.

“Ahhh~!”

-Roar!

Gomgom opened his mouth wide, and I scored a direct hit!

Since it wasn’t too hot, Gomgom chewed the potato pancake contentedly, and his face soon brightened.

-Roar!!

“Haha, it’s good, right?”

Taking this chance, I grabbed one for myself! Yum!

“Mm!”

The rich flavor of the potato was maximized by frying, enhancing its nutty taste. The mashed potatoes melted in my mouth with a soft texture.

This deliciousness! I can’t resist!

Eventually, as I put another one in my mouth, Ara started helping herself to the potato pancakes I had heated up.

Munch, munch—

Soon, everyone gathered to eat the potato pancakes, and in the meantime, I quietly heated up some carrot fries.

‘How did they make these?’

The carrot fries had lost their original shape. They were thinly sliced, made into threads, coated in batter, and fried, looking like round yarn balls.

According to Jae-seong, it was a skill not easily replicated, and my competitive spirit made me try twice, both times ending in failure.

“A chef is indeed a chef. I shouldn’t underestimate them.”

I picked up the heated carrot fries with chopsticks and handed them to Ara, who was devouring the potato pancakes.

Ara, without any suspicion, just put the food I handed her into her mouth.

Crunch!

“Ooooh!”

Crunch, crunch, crunch!

I could hear the crispy sound of the fries being chewed.

Ara continued munching with delighted eyes.

“Gasp! Del, delicious! It’s like Candies!”

“Really?”

I had already tasted the potato pancakes.

But I hadn’t tried the carrot fries yet since it wasn’t a dish I could make, and Ara’s reaction made me excited.

Ara’s favorite food was none other than Matang (Sweet Potato Candies). So if these carrot fries were on the level of Matang, it meant they’d join the list of Ara’s favorite foods.

Could it be because of Ara’s dramatic reaction?

The slimes and Gomgom paused their enthusiastic eating of the potato pancakes to stare at the carrot fries I was heating up.

“Alright, alright. One at a time!”

I fed the slimes and Gomgom directly with chopsticks. Each time, a crispy sound echoed.

-Crunch!

“I want more! I want more too!”

I diligently heated the carrot fries while feeding the kids. It seemed like it would be hard for me to get a taste.

There weren’t as many carrot fries as there were potato pancakes.

Since Jae-seong had put a lot of effort into making and frying them, it was labor-intensive and not as easy to make in large quantities like pancakes.

“Yum yum! Hm? Isn’t Kyu-seong Kyu-seong going to eat?”

“Of course, I will.”

It was endearing that she thought of me while munching away.

Thanks to her, I managed to eat a carrot fry too, and as soon as it entered my mouth, crunch! I was slightly surprised by the crispiness of the fry.

‘Even after a day, it’s still this crispy?’

Normally, it would be soggy by now, but it was strangely crisp. Was this another effect of the carrots I grew?

I didn’t know the reason, but I enjoyed it immensely.

Crunch!

“Mm!”

It was delicious in a different way from the potato pancakes.

The unique sweetness of the carrot enveloped my entire tongue, making me wonder if carrots were always this sweet.

Even though it was sliced thin like thread, the juice of the carrot was still intact, melting together with the savory oil.

It felt like eating a gourmet snack.

‘I see why Ara liked it.’

My hands and mouth kept moving without rest.

While heating the potato pancakes and carrot fries, the curry was ready, and we immediately prepared the rice.

“Curry!”

-Growl.

Ara’s eyes sparkled, and Gomgom’s nose twitched as he sniffed the aroma of the curry.

We prepared each bowl with plenty of curry along with the instant rice we had. Since we brought enough curry for two days, there was no need to hold back.

‘If we run out, we can just go back and get more.’

Since the entrance was only 10 minutes away, we could easily bring more food.

As we prepared the generous servings of curry, everyone sat quietly, waiting.

“Alright, it’s done. Let’s eat.”

“Ohh!”

Ara cheered, holding her spoon excitedly.

Gomgom, unable to use utensils, just tilted his head, watching Ara’s actions.

“Let’s eat.”

“Eat well!”

I took a bite of the curry.

As expected, it didn’t disappoint. Indeed, nothing beats a proper meal.

Glancing to the side, I saw Ara scraping her bowl clean, holding it up. She had learned to serve herself curry and was already opening another instant rice to eat more.

Gomgom tentatively dipped his tiny paw into the curry, then licked it.

-…!

He froze in shock for a moment, then started licking the curry without stopping.

‘How cute.’

The slimes, though I couldn’t tell where their mouths were, ate the curry bit by bit. They also helped themselves to potato pancakes and pickled cucumbers, showing they knew how to enjoy their food.

“Let’s see. I’ll try too…”

A bite of curry. A bite of cucumber salad.

A bite of curry. A bite of pickled cucumber.

A bite of curry. A bite of potato pancake.

Mm! It was a feast that rivaled a high-end restaurant. Moreover, the cucumber side dishes oddly complemented the curry, so I ended up eating two bowls.

“Ugh.”

I overate for the first time in a while.

Before I knew it, the curry pot was empty, and all the other side dishes we brought were completely devoured.

‘We ate all the food meant for two days.’

Well, there’s plenty of food around, so no worries.

Ara and Gomgom were diligently licking the empty bowls. Their actions were so identical, like twins, that I instinctively took out my phone to take a picture.

“Ugh! Now that we’ve eaten, how about a nap?”

I took out a camping chair that could be extended.

Then, I set up a hammock between some nearby trees.

“We couldn’t use it last time because there weren’t any trees…”

Finally, my camping dream was complete.

Ara immediately climbed into the hammock and lay down. Her giggling at the gentle swaying was delightful.

-Roar!

Gomgom spread his paws, indicating he wanted to be placed in the hammock too. I lifted him and placed him next to Ara.

“Kya haha! It’s so fluffy!”

-Roar.

As she hugged Gomgom, I couldn’t tell if she meant the hammock was fluffy or Gomgom was fluffy.

Just in case, I also set up a tent and prepared a sleeping bag for Ara.

“Oh, good job.”

Splash!

The slimes, having finished washing the dishes, were tidying up the gear. Natural-born workers.

After helping with the remaining cleanup, I finally thought about taking a break and noticed that Ara and Gomgom were quiet. Wondering why it was so quiet, I approached the hammock and saw the two of them sound asleep.

“…Candies…”

Roar.

They looked like little angels as they mumbled in their sleep.

I couldn’t resist taking another picture, grinning as I returned to the camping chair.

I hadn’t mentioned it before, but I’d taken quite a few videos and photos. As I scrolled through them, it occurred to me that Seon-ah might steal my phone if she found out.

‘…I’d better prepare a tribute for her in advance.’

It wouldn’t do for our princess Seon-ah to get upset. Ahem.

As I reminisced over the memories, sleep gradually overtook me. I closed my eyes and fell asleep without resistance.

* * *

“Let’s go!”

“Let’s go, indeed!”

After a good sleep, we started working again.

We were almost done making the paddy field, but there was one final task left: removing a remaining stone.

“Phew, it won’t work. We need to dig out more soil around it to pull it out.”

“Can’t we do it?”

Even with Ara’s help, the stone embedded in the ground wouldn’t budge. At this point, it seemed more like a massive boulder than a simple stone.

‘…Should we just leave it and create a new one beside it?’

Thanks to Ara and the unique hoe, making another paddy field wasn’t that difficult. But for some reason, I felt determined to remove this boulder.

“I think we should try to get this rock out somehow. Can we do it, Ara?”

“We can do it!”

With a confident shout, Ara exhaled through her nose and began digging more soil around the rock with me.

“Wow! It’s huge!”

“Yeah, it’s bigger than I thought.”

It seemed impossible to pull it out just like this. So, I decided to use a pickaxe to break the rock into smaller pieces and then remove it.

Clang!

“Ow.”

My whole body tingled.

It was definitely too much for me alone.

“Let me try!”

Ara raised her hand and stepped forward.

I handed her the pickaxe, and she mimicked spitting into her palms before gripping the pickaxe.

“Hiyah!”

Clang!

The sound was louder than when I did it, but the rock didn’t break. What kind of rock was this?

Ara’s whole body seemed to tingle too, as she jumped around making funny faces for a while before shouting to me.

“Can I use my breath attack?”

“Breath attack?”

Isn’t that a bit too much?

But Ara was glaring at the rock with blazing eyes.

“Make sure you control your power. Got it, Ara?”

“Okay!”

If she used her full power, the entire area would probably blow up. I repeatedly reminded her to be gentle, then stepped back with the slimes and Gomgom.

“Take this!”

Paaaaaa—!!

From a safe distance, Ara unleashed a devastating beam. But it seemed to have changed color from before.

‘Wasn’t it sky blue?’

Now it was almost a deep blue.

You didn’t forget to control your power, did you, Ara?!

Boom–!

Splash!

“Huh?”

“What?”

The rock did break, but as it shattered, something started gushing out. Then it began to fall and wet the surroundings.

Shaa—

Drip-drip—

“What on earth is this?”

Act 113

Prev I TOC I Next

Having heard the news that the Blood Ghost Clan had located ‘Aiden’s laboratory’ through the ‘Resonance Stone,’ I immediately set out for the place.

Destroying and erasing the essence of the ‘Demon Research’ kept there was essential to preemptively eliminate the dangers related to the subsequent ‘event.’

“An underground waterway in the slums…”

Just the name conjured up images of filth.

The very thought of it made ‘Julian,’ who suffers from severe germophobia, vehemently reject the idea, and I couldn’t help but agree.

Honestly, who would want to go to a place filled with polluted water, foul odors, filth, and rats?

Despite my reluctance, I forced myself to go, as it was crucial to prevent the disaster that could ruin the ‘Blood Tuesday’ event.

However, the person I encountered there was all too familiar.

“…Aileen?”

Why was she here?

No matter how much I racked my brain, I couldn’t figure it out.

This situation had never occurred in the game.

Then, a thought crossed my mind: ‘Could she be here to protect Aiden de Donassien’s laboratory?’

I had considered the possibility, but to be honest, it seemed highly unlikely.

Aileen held a more upright moral compass compared to other wizards.

Moreover, Aiden, who detests the side branches, would never reveal the location of such an important laboratory to her.

“Come out, won’t you?”

While I was organizing my thoughts, I heard Aileen’s voice.

Did she notice me?

“If you don’t come out, you’ll regret it. Magic used in such a confined space is hard to control.”

Damn! She caught me.

‘What should I do now?’

Though I was still hidden in the darkness and my identity wasn’t revealed yet, stepping out now would surely confuse Aileen.

If ‘Julian’ were here, anyone would be suspicious, linking Aiden’s research to Julian.

‘I have no choice.’

I used ‘Sombra’ to create a mask and cover my face.

I didn’t expect to use it so soon.

‘Once should be fine.’

Feeling the mask form, I stepped into the light, revealing myself.

Though she was from a side branch, Aileen was still of the Donassien lineage, so she could potentially ally with Aiden.

It would be wise to neutralize her beforehand to avoid any interference.

As I thought this, I felt the hard touch of a gemstone against my stomach, making me frown slightly.

‘She won’t go down easily.’

The main magic of the Donassien family involves storing mana in gemstones for later use.

In other words, the gemstone pressed against my stomach was infused with mana, ready to be used for magic at any time.

‘I might be able to defend with Sombra, but I’m not sure about the power.’

I needed to try to change the situation through conversation, even though it was uncertain.

“Why are you here?”

Just as I was about to speak, Aileen opened her mouth first.

Her crimson eyes reflected the mask of the ‘Black Knight.’

Her gaze was filled with curiosity rather than admiration or determination.

“Why are you here?”

I was equally puzzled by her question.

If ‘Aiden’s laboratory’ were here, Aileen would know it defied the Empire’s arbitrary rules.

In other words, if there was someone other than herself here, it meant they were either related to the laboratory or had come to destroy the facility.

‘Could it be that Aileen has no connection to Aiden?’

Just because they are from the same Donassien family doesn’t mean they are working together.

Moreover, Aileen was one of the righteous wizards who sided with the Sword Saint until the end.

Ah, I mean the Sword Saint from the game, not the one currently causing trouble in the Holy Nation.

Besides, she also goes against the ‘pureblood’ ideology that Aiden upholds.

“Did you perhaps come following the energy of the Resonance Stone?”

The idle thoughts I had turned into certainty with her question.

“If so, put that away. I also came here following the energy of the Resonance Stone.”

After speaking cautiously, Aileen removed the gemstone from my stomach and put it away.

“So reckless.”

Seeing her so defenseless, I couldn’t help but click my tongue in disbelief.

“What?”

“Putting away your weapon without even getting an answer. Even if you did get an answer, there’s a chance I could be lying.”

The characteristic of using formal speech doesn’t apply when wearing the ‘Black Knight’ mask, so I could express my frustration plainly.

“If I were your enemy, you could have died.”

“If you were, you wouldn’t have said that.”

The mask of the ‘Black Knight’ reflected in Aileen’s eyes looked grotesque even to me.

Despite seeing such a thing, she didn’t flinch, which was quite bold of her.

“Moreover, you gave me the Resonance Stone.”

“True.”

After putting away my sword, I extended a hand to her, and Aileen took it and stood up as if it was nothing.

“Does the energy of the Resonance Stone here have anything to do with the royal family?”

“No.”

When I denied it, Aileen fell silent for a moment.

It didn’t take long for her to speak again.

“Then, the energy of this Resonance Stone must be something the royal family wouldn’t welcome.”

“Why do you think so?”

“You said it yourself before, didn’t you? ‘I work for the royal family.'”

Indeed, I had mentioned that when I gave her the Resonance Stone before, but it was more of a joke.

“You remember that?”

“That was a lie.”

Aileen frowned slightly at my mocking tone.

“Honestly, I didn’t believe it either.”

Despite her curt response, there was a hint of confusion in her eyes.

***

“Anyway, why are you here?”

After sorting out the situation, I turned to look at Aileen following me deeper into the underground waterway.

“Probably for a reason similar to yours.”

“Did you receive orders from the royal family?”

When I brought up the previous topic again, Aileen cleared her throat, trying to change the subject.

“The demon incident in the slums. I concluded that it wasn’t a natural occurrence but a manufactured one.”

“So, you came to confirm what that ‘manufactured’ thing is?”

“Yes, they must have conducted human experiments.”

Indeed, a fifth-ranked wizard like her, with the title ‘Vargo,’ didn’t earn it through mere jokes.

As she said, ‘Aiden’s laboratory’ was conducting human experiments. The emergence of humanoid demons meant that.

The question is whether Aileen will maintain her stance even after discovering the truth here.

“What if the person conducting those experiments is someone you know?”

“……Someone I know?”

Yes, it’s none other than Aiden de Donassien.

There’s no way she wouldn’t recognize that name.

“Even if it’s someone I know, I’ll have to do something about it.”

“If you’re a wizard, you’d be taught that satisfying your curiosity comes before considering morality, wouldn’t you?”

“I’m a person before I’m a wizard.”

That’s quite a noble sentiment.

Most of the people I’ve encountered so far claimed to be ‘wizards’ before being ‘people.’

“By the way, I still haven’t heard why you’re here….”

“Shh.”

<Amazing Intuition>

<Discernment>

You have detected a negative gaze observing you.

When I stopped and put a finger to my lips, Aileen looked at me with a puzzled expression.

It didn’t take long for her face to turn serious.

A pack of demons that looked like wild dogs appeared from the opposite corner.

“…Seeing demons here means my guess was somewhat correct.”

Indeed.

I came here for the same reason.

“I’ll handle this.”

Just as I was about to conceal my identity by covering the ‘Moon Sword’ with ‘Sombra,’ Aileen stepped forward, taking out her wand and gemstone.

The demons growled as they watched her.

Dripping purple mucus from their mouths, they charged at us without any hint of caution.

“Disgusting creatures.”

Swish!

The jewels scattered throughout the dark underground waterway.

As Aileen swung her wand towards the demons, the jewels in the air began to flicker a few times.

“Scatter.”

As Aileen murmured softly, the jewels in the air shattered into dust.

Of course, the dust was not just simple powder.

Each particle was imbued with Aileen’s mana, refined into tiny blades.

The demons, unaware of this, continued to charge at us without stopping, as if they were throwing themselves into a storm.

Crunch, crunch!

– Screech, squeal!

Eventually, they became so unrecognizable, resembling minced meat.

‘That’s terrifying.’

If I had left it to her earlier, my body would have ended up like that.

The thought made me shiver and let out a dry laugh.

“I don’t want to waste time on these worthless demons.”

After using her magic, Aileen seemed rather confident.

“Let’s head further inside. It will take time to verify the truth.”

“Alright… huh?”

Just as I was about to head deeper into the underground waterway as Aileen suggested, the Resonance Stone in my pocket started to emit a faint light.

It’s far too small to be used as a barrier, but it’s highly effective at detecting demons, so I brought it just in case.

‘If this is glowing…’

It means there are still demons nearby.

As expected, a sharp killing intent mixed with demonic energy was detected from the crack in the ceiling.

The same type of demon dogs that Aileen defeated earlier.

‘Aileen seems to have missed it.’

Perhaps due to her lack of experience, her follow-up was incomplete.

Recalling my duel with the ‘Blind Warrior,’ I placed my hand on the sword hilt.

Aura that retains its form and function even when distanced from its user.

Unconsciously, I realized something about the ability the ‘Blind Warrior’ used.

‘Wrapping another layer of aura around the edge of the existing aura.’

Through this, it minimizes the mana wasted in the air and allows for a more effective ‘sword energy’ that can inflict significant damage on the enemy.

“Hup.”

I focused for a moment and swung my sword at the demon that sprang out of the crack.

Slash!

The demon dog hit by the sword energy splattered blood and collapsed weakly to the ground.

“Ahhh!”

As a large demon dog fell right in front of her, Aileen, who had been confidently walking, let out a dull scream.

“What, what was that!?”

“Can’t you see? It’s a demon.”

Leaving the bewildered Aileen behind, I approached the demon struck by the sword energy and examined the wound.

It was sharper and more lethal than the experimental sword energy I had used on Fern.

‘Though the attempt to split it in half failed.’

But this was good enough.

Though I couldn’t use it unconsciously, I was beginning to grasp the realm of ‘One Strike.’

“That’s not what I meant. How did you know there was a demon hiding there?”

Her question felt oddly familiar, but I didn’t want to talk about the ‘Resonance Stone’ in my pocket.

No matter how small, using a ‘Resonance Stone’ operated by the Magic Tower carries a high risk of being tracked.

Besides, I couldn’t reveal to anyone that the ‘Black Knight’ was Julian.

“Do you need to know? It’s a secret.”

It’s best to keep difficult things as secrets.

Having said that, I started walking again in the direction of the laboratory.

“Hmm?”

Strange.

When I looked back, Aileen was staring blankly at me, lost in thought.

“Are you having second thoughts?”

Was she scared after seeing the demons?

That shouldn’t be the case.

Her magic was well executed, and as a fifth-rank wizard with the ‘Vargo’ title, these demons should be easy for her.

Aileen, snapped out of her thoughts by my words, shook her head slightly.

“Oh, no. I’ll follow you.”
