Survival 124

Prev I TOC I Next

An almost ambush-like charge.

With its horns, barely half the size of my body, it looked dangerous as warned by Yegor’s warning.

Woosh.

As a yellow deer passed by.

Trees falling like hay along its path.

If I were to take a direct hit, I would also collapse into the snow like those trees.

‘Of course, assuming everything hits.’

It’s just fast.

The preparatory movements were too large, and the trajectory was almost straight.

I leaped out of the way.

Now I felt like a matador.

Just with a bipedal deer instead of a crazy bull.

‘It’s not just a deer.’

Grrrr!

The creature’s white breath passed by through its menacing fangs.

“Hans Byron!”

“It’s okay. Didn’t you see it during the entrance exam? This is basic.”

To others, it might seem like I narrowly avoided it by a hair’s breadth.

But it was all calculated evasion.

Now was the moment to plunge a dagger into the exposed back of the defenseless creature.

“Ugh.”

A fierce wind brushed past my cheek.

It wasn’t natural.

A powerful storm, knocking down trees hindering the snowfield, like a post-blast of a powerful charge.

An unexpected gust.

‘My posture is crumbling. It’s too dangerous.’

I dodged with my tongue in my cheek.

The plan to swing the dagger was canceled.

This way, my body would stiffen after just one attack.

There was no guarantee I could dodge the next Wendigo attack.

‘It’s an incredible pressure.’

Despite being a little away from me, Camilla managed to maintain her posture in the storm created by the Wendigo.

There was a slight irritation in her voice.

“Solving becoming vulnerable after a charge like that. Monsters can be quite intelligent.”

“Hmph. Even so, they’re just monsters.”

“Is that your opinion?”

Sure, she might not have experienced real combat, but Camilla’s resolve was solid, having fought more ruthless criminals than that.

It’s because of the antics of all the nobles she had seen so far; her expectations were higher.

“If you make it impossible to approach, dealing with it from a distance should suffice.”

However.

Her blatantly staring gaze demanded my involvement.

“Well, it’s not entirely wrong. Unfortunately, my magic is more focused on convenience. It doesn’t seem to be very efficient.”

I could only shrug my shoulders.

Look at that leather.

He’s someone who’s taken dozens of logs head-on without even a scratch.

Maybe for an aura, but with my mediocre magic, there would be no doubt that not even a single wound would be inflicted.

“And the vampire? If she steps in, it should be easy to deal with.”

“…She sleeps during the day, they say. Don’t bother her.”

Her sharp gaze pierced through me.

But how could I explain it to her?

That Bathory was weakened in the North due to a contract with the Spada family.

Not to mention, she was nothing but an ordinary girl, far from the predatory image she once showed to her!

-She’s getting around just fine.

-Please let me save face.

In the moment of dealing with the premonition emanating from the shadows.

“Well, forget it. If I can’t overcome this, how can I rise to the position of student council?”

“Are you giving up the presidency?”

“…You speak well. How will I defeat Luciana Speda?”

She knows her limits very well.

That attitude isn’t bad.

“Anyway, I think I can beat everyone else except her. If I graduate with a student council status, the successor position will lean towards me.”

‘It’ll be tough.’

Including the Saint, of course.

Magic prodigy Ricky, although I don’t like to admit it, is the overwhelming prince of the Auroras.

You have to beat the arrogant genius.

Even if she graduates by defeating them.

“Well, I’ll cheer you on.”

“What’s with that expression?”

“It’s nothing.”

Even if Camilla tries, will the family’s position change?

That was something she had to figure out for herself.

-Boom!

“It looks very angry.”

“Is it because the repentance attack missed?”

“Hmm. Maybe because it’s being ignored?”

Steam came out of the creature’s nose as it turned away after knocking down a sturdy tree.

Followed by a charge.

And a sweeping of the snowfield.

Even at a glance, it seemed like a continuation of the previous charge.

And there stood Camilla in front of it.

Thunk!

The deer aimed its horns and started charging again.

However,

I wasn’t worried at all.

“Where to.”

A weapon that boasts speeds faster than sound, even before the invention of guns by humanity.

The ominous whistling of the whip was faster than the creature lifting its foot.

-Guh?!

The target was the creature’s face under its horn.

The one who got hit properly staggered and went in the wrong direction.

Camilla did well to sacrifice herself for the trees.

‘By the way, it’s quite a powerful attack. It’s not originally the kind of power that a whip has.’

As I chuckled with such thoughts, Camilla’s eyebrows twitched slightly, showing her displeasure.

But this was an undeniable fact.

Of course, in the hands of a skilled user, it could show its own power, but it’s still just a whip.

Certainly, it had no equal as a ‘tool’ for driving beasts or inflicting torture, but as a ‘weapon’ for taking lives, its performance was quite ambiguous.

Of course, she had another ace up her sleeve, which made it possible, but that’s why I was being so negligent with the deer, and she looked at me with disdain.

“Magic isn’t there for nothing, you know? …It seems like you already knew that.”

“Oh, yes.”

Although I’m seeing it for the first time, black sand floated around her.

Sand.

Her sand magic, which is her specialty, manifested not in the form of a workhorse this time, but in sharpness.

‘Sand magic on a whip. It was like that in the game too, and it seems like it’s a good match.’

Even simple power was enhanced by the sharpness of the sand mixed with the whip’s speed, enough to say, “Go away, Auroras.”

But it didn’t end there.

-Grrr?

The deer, which was about to lift its foot to retaliate immediately, hesitated and flailed its arms.

“Sand, swallow it up to the depths.”

A swamp spread beneath the monster, along with the sand spell.

It was the characteristic entrapment of sand magic.

‘If we deplete its stamina like this, we can finish it off.’

Just as a scorpion injects venom and watches its prey die slowly.

The cold smile she wore now was just like that.

From her pragmatic handling of the monster to her magical prowess, Camilla clearly demonstrated why she was the 7th-ranked student in admissions.

However, there was something she had overlooked.

-Kyaaaah!

-Kudduk! Kududuk!!

Monsters from the North were different from those in the West, neither criminals nor monsters were as tough.

Her magic was undoubtedly strong.

But the Wendigo was more than that.

“…You’ve nullified my magic?”

Camilla’s gaze was fixed on the Wendigo’s ankle.

Despite being forcibly torn away, there should have been injuries from the torn leather, but judging by its slow approach this way, it looked unscathed.

Still, with those legs, it couldn’t use a charge.

At the moment when I still judged this side to be superior.

“Despair.”

An astonished gaze was directed at the opponent.

The creature’s forehead, torn open, was groaning.

It sounded exactly like Camilla.

But it was distinctly different from the deception just a moment ago, where it lured in prey.

Well, of course.

“Mana flow? Monsters casting spells?”

Spells.

The language created by magicians to refine their magic.

Usually, proficient magicians don’t use it due to its lack of practicality, but novice magicians often do.

But to think it would come from the mouth of a monster, of all things, not even the same student.

“Be careful!”

Before my warning could reach her.

The black magic emanating from the Wendigo’s fingertips approached us faster than Camilla’s whip.

“Ugh…!”

At the same time, Camilla groaned and clutched her head.

Originally, the Wendigo’s ensnarement magic extracted despairing memories as per the spell.

There was no room for resistance.

A seasoned magician would have blocked the flow of mana, but she was just a freshman.

We didn’t have that ability as novice magicians.

Kuk.

‘This is bad.’

I was careless.

In the game, this despair magic was only unleashed when you chose the wrong option deceived by the voice.

I never imagined it could be cast with just one spell.

Soon, I also felt the creeping moisture rising from below.

What came to mind was when I was summoned to this other world.

Back then, calculating the difference between dying now and dying a few years later due to the calamity made me feel like an adult.

“Showing such star-like memories.”

I immediately opened the vial hidden on my left wrist and swallowed its contents.

“Haha! As expected, It doesn’t match with genuine spellcasting! Items are the best!”

The determined will to overcome painful memories?

Such a thing suited protagonists like the Saint or her companions.

After all, I was the weakest in full force unless I revealed my hidden identities.

It might be different if it were a human opponent.

It’s a useless power against monsters.

But whether it’s willpower, strength, or power, anything is possible with money. The top-quality Holy Water was enough to replace it! Taking a moment to catch my breath, I immediately struck the snowy ground.

-Grugh?!

A clearly startled cry, different from before. Perhaps due to the recoil from the magic just now. Or maybe it was because of the injury from forcibly escaping Camilla’s magic.

I just watched blankly as I leapt. Even closing the distance, the creature showed no signs of movement.

“I’ll etch terrifying memories into you too!”

Of course, whether I’ll be able to recall them or not is unknown!

A black comet appeared from my right hand and fell onto the Wendigo’s chest. A sharp Raven claw that cut through thick leather. My black aura swallowed by the blade pierced through the leather, reaching the bone and flesh.

And along that path, blood also scattered…

“Huh? What’s this?”

Sensations transmitted through the dagger. I definitely felt like I had struck it. But something was clearly different.

From Direwolves to Yetis and even Demons. Something that should naturally be present in living beings briefly appeared and disappeared in the gaping wound. Instead of red blood, what appeared to me was black powder.

It settled on the white snow, contrasting sharply in color.

-Kweaaaaah!

At the same time, the Wendigo let out a horrific scream and gradually lost its form. Its enormous horns, which it boasted about with each charge, had disappeared long ago like an illusion.

Its yellow fur had also turned into black shadows. The only resemblance to the previous bipedal deer was its sharp fangs and long tongue.

-Ugh…

Now, with a voice that sounded as if it were gasping for breath, the shadow monster on the snowy ground collapsed weakly.

Then, as if unable to maintain its form, it gradually turned into black ashes and scattered. When the sharp northern wind passed through, any trace of the Wendigo disappeared. All that remained on the ground were some fangs dulled by the whip and what could be mistaken for branches, but were actually twisted tongues.

“…What is this.”

It was like the final form of a monster in a game. Because of that, my mind was quickly filled with confusion. To obtain Direwolf skin, slaughter was necessary.

Naturally, I thought the Wendigo’s body would remain.

Having witnessed similar scenes before, it was more accurate to say it was confusing.

Once, in the game, when I defeated the Doppleganger:

-Is this my brother, no, the last of the Doppelgangers?

-Only the tongue remains on the fangs…

-Horrible. As horrible as its annoying abilities.

And another time, after subduing the Doppelganger noble who took over Bathory:

-Ck, aaah!

Along with the external screams, the body of the creature, which had been subdued by the soldiers, disappeared, leaving only its fangs.

It perfectly matched the Wendigo I had just taken down.

…Now that I think about it, from mimicking voices to ensnarement magic, they’re all characteristics of a Doppelganger.

The faint suspicion that started from a small clue soon bore fruit.

[Quest Activated!]

[Defeat the Wendigo and bring peace to the couple!]

[Reward: Bonus points, Vault Viewing ticket (limited to the 2nd basement floor), ???]

[Hidden Condition (1/1)]

[Condition: Identify the true identity of the Wendigo, one of the Northern 3 Great Monsters.]

[Hidden Mission Unlocked.]

Hidden.

For a moment, the appearance of that welcoming word after a long time brought a flicker of emotion.

I could feel even my own face slowly sinking at what was written at the bottom of the status window.

[Failure Penalty]

[Permanent loss of the ‘Symbol’ of the King of Doppelgangers, ‘Shadow’]

The ‘Symbol’ would likely be a treasure of the same caliber as the Jade seal of the Oparn.

Given its significance and the treasure I had been keeping an eye on, it was a penalty that I could not afford to ignore under any circumstances.

And that wasn’t all.

‘…At this very moment, the artifact of the Doppelganger is lost.’

A strange intuition brushed through my mind.

Round 61

Lee Kyu-seong’s Infinite Dungeon.

Today, Gomgom, who couldn’t go out with them, was playing with the slimes.

For Gomgom, who always wandered the forest alone, the presence of the slimes, Ara, and Lee Kyu-seong was very significant.

Roar.

‘I’m happy.’

While playing happily, Gomgom noticed other slimes working in the field.

Roar!

‘That looks fun!’

Although he didn’t know what they were doing, it looked quite fun, so Gomgom waddled over to try something himself, but it didn’t go as he wanted.

Groan.

‘It’s high.’

The tomatoes were hanging high.

The slimes worked together to harvest the tomatoes, but no matter how much Gomgom stretched his arms, he couldn’t reach them.

Groan!

‘I can do it!’

But Gomgom didn’t give up.

Soon, the slimes gathered around and started cheering for Gomgom.

Grabbing the tomato stem, Gomgom began climbing like he was scaling a tree.

Snap!

Groan!

‘I did it!’

Gomgom, who climbed up to where the tomatoes were, succeeded in his first harvest.

Wriggle- wriggle-

Bounce!

The slimes welcomed Gomgom, rejoicing as if it was their own accomplishment.

Gomgom, who brought down a cherry tomato, proudly offered it after climbing down the stem.

Groan!

‘How’s this!’

Everyone danced with joy at Gomgom’s gesture.

Gomgom also danced with the slimes before he promptly ate the tomato he had harvested.

Pop!

Groan!

‘Delicious!’

The tomato he harvested himself tasted much better than the ones he ate before.

Although Gomgom realized the joy of harvest, he was satisfied with just one tomato.

Roar! Roar!

‘Tomatoes are from a kind giant!’

Gomgom thought of Lee Kyu-seong as a kind giant.

At first, he was a very fearful and terrifying existence, but now he seemed like an angel.

Roar?

‘When is he coming back?’

Gomgom glanced around and, seeing the slimes working hard again, he wanted to help too.

He wanted to repay the kind giant who gave him delicious food and always made Ara happy.

Sniff sniff sniff.

Gomgom started sniffing, just like when he was in the Gluttony Dungeon.

The Alfheims were mistaken, but in reality, the main diet of the Star Bears wasn’t flowers.

Flowers and honey were more like delicacies; their real staple food was the fruits and mushrooms of certain plants.

Sniff sniff sniff!

Crawling around the 1,000-pyeong field and sniffing, Gomgom soon became sullen.

There were no mushrooms that Gomgom was looking for in this place.

Groan…

‘There were plenty over there.’

Then, he suddenly thought, why not go back to where he used to be and get the mushrooms?

Roar!?

‘How do I get there!?’

Lost in thought, Gomgom suddenly panicked and waddled towards the place with the altar.

Poispois, who had nothing else to do, followed behind Gomgom.

Roar~!

‘I’m going down~!’

Gomgom found the stairs and began to slowly descend them one step at a time, each step as tall as he was. Poispois also followed behind, watching over him.

Roar!

‘I made it!’

Gomgom and Poispois arrived in front of the door and stood there, looking at each other.

Roar?

‘What do we do now?’

Wriggle?

‘Not sure.’

The two of them tilted their heads, then decided to work together.

Gomgom exerted his tremendous strength, lifting the wobbling Poispois over his head. Poispois then grabbed the door handle and turned it.

[Confirming the dungeon master, Ara (Gluttony)]

[Entry is not permitted]

[Remaining mana: 0/10]

[No mana available]

If Kyu-seong had been there, he would have seen the notification.

However, Poispois and Gomgom just tilted their heads, staring at the door that wouldn’t open.

Roar?

‘It’s not working?’

Wriggle!

‘It seems only the overlord can do it!’

Gomgom and Poispois quickly gave up and forgot why they had come there in the first place. They looked back at the path they had come from.

Roar!

‘Oh no! It’s too high!’

Wriggle!?

‘How do we get back!?’

They hadn’t realized it while coming down, but going back up the stairs was too much for them. Eventually, Gomgom and Poispois, struggling hard, knelt before the great obstacle of the stairs.

Roar! Roar!

‘No! Help us!’

***

In the Ara Hongryeon  Guild’s measurement room.

Everyone was waiting for the results of an unexpected occurrence.

“Hm, it seems….”

A member of the research team murmured while looking at the computer screen.

“It doesn’t seem to be combat-specialized. No, it might be, but it’s very ambiguous.”

“Hm….”

Hanul, who was present, seemed deep in thought. Jae-seong had vaguely described his ability, so everyone was expecting something, but the results were unclear.

“Hmm. The output is not very high. Checking the mana, it seems to be around Level 1.”

“I see.”

Guild Master Han Seok-jun nodded.

However, there was no sign of disappointment.

The others had similar reactions.

Normally, hearing “Level 1” would have prompted a negative response, but they didn’t seem to care much.

“Um… is it bad?”

“Huh? No, well. It’s not particularly good, but….”

Jae-seong asked with an anxious face, and the research team member gave an ambiguous answer.

For a moment, everyone’s gaze focused on me.

Then they smiled and reassured Jae-seong.

“The type of ability is what matters, even if it’s Level 1.”

“You’re right, you’re right. Look at your brother, Kyu-seong.”

What about me?

Of course, I knew they were talking about awakening ranks, but it still made me feel a bit upset.

“So, your ability is called ‘Absolute Sense,’ right?”

“It’s an ability to temporarily maximize one of the five senses. But since I’m Level 1, I can only maintain it for about a second.”

Ah, that’s disappointing.

It sounded quite useful from the explanation, but one second of duration is too short.

However, Guild Master Han Seok-jun approached Jae-seong without a hint of concern and asked, “Mr. Jae-seong, do you plan to stop cooking if you become an awakened?”

“Huh? No. I think I’ll continue cooking.”

“That’s great. This awakening will actually be a blessing for you, Mr. Jae-seong.”

Of course, it’s better than not having it.

Everyone nodded at the Guild Master’s words. He smiled and patted Jae-seong’s shoulder.

“This ability can be especially good for cooking. Even if it lasts only for a second, that second can be incredibly helpful when you’re cooking.”

“Yes, indeed. It will be useful for smelling or tasting.”

“I’ve heard that the ability to control heat is crucial in cooking. If you can freely use your sense of touch, you can make much better dishes.”

Moreover, becoming an awakened would mean better physical strength and athletic ability compared to an ordinary person. This transformation doesn’t happen instantly but takes about a year to adjust to the awakened state.

“This is impressive. Our Chef Shimomoto might have to be on alert. Who would have thought a chef would awaken? And with such a useful ability for cooking, no less. Haha.”

Junichi, who had been with us, already seemed excited, rubbing his palms together.

Next to Junichi, Shimomoto Orie, who had cooked with Jae-seong, looked on with an unreadable expression.

Whisper, whisper.

Orie whispered something to Junichi, who then widened his eyes and turned to me with an excited look.

“Mr. Kyu-seong and Mr. Jae-seong.”

“Yes, Mr. Junichi.”

“If it’s alright with both of you, may we scout Mr. Jae-seong to join our kitchen?”

“Uh…”

Both Jae-seong and I were taken aback by the unexpected proposal. At that moment, Hanul shouted in protest.

“Junichi, you rascal! Are you trying to steal our talent again?”

“Haha! Calm down, my friend. Chef Orié just expressed interest in working with Mr. Jae-seong. We were thinking of it more as a culinary study abroad opportunity.”

“Study abroad?”

Honestly, Jae-seong’s opinion mattered more than mine.

When I looked at Jae-seong, he seemed already swayed by Chef Orié’s proposal.

“Working under Chef Orié…”

His mind was already picturing working with her.

“It might sound like boasting, but I personally run seven different restaurants. Among them, the one Chef Orié directly operates is highly coveted among chefs.”

“That’s definitely boasting!”

Ignoring Hanul’s teasing, I looked back at Jae-seong. Meeting my gaze, he nodded vigorously and said,

“Exactly! It’s a place called ‘Oriental Cuisine,’ known for its fusion of Eastern and Western dishes. It’s incredibly famous among chefs!”

Then he suddenly looked serious.

“…Do you think I should go?”

“If you want to go, then go.”

“But, I was supposed to work with you…”

“Come on. Are you planning to stay there forever? You’ll have your own restaurant too.”

“Y-Yeah, that’s true.”

“Go ahead. Learn everything you can. And while you’re at it, why not explore other places? Experience Europe too. Don’t worry about the money.”

“Brother…”

Why is he being so emotional?

I shrugged off Jae-seong, who was looking at me with a moved expression, and spoke with a mock disgusted tone.

“So it’s settled then, Mr. Junichi.”

“Hahaha! Excellent! Very good! Then, Mr. Kyu-seong, if it’s alright with you, could we also receive some of your crops?”

“Huh? Junichi, now you’re really crossing the line!”

This time, even So-yeon looked on with fierce determination, as if she wouldn’t tolerate it.

Popular people sure have it tough.

“In return! In return, we will send tributes to Ara Hongryeon  regularly!”

“Tributes?”

Just as Hanul was stepping forward to confront Junichi, he blurted out in a hurry.

“For your information, I also run two breweries! One specializes in sake, the traditional Japanese liquor, and the other in Western liquors like whiskey.”

“Wait, could it be…?”

“I’ll provide you with the finest sake that money can’t buy! And of course, I’ll also pay a generous price for the goods!”

I knew that Hanul was quite a drinker. He often drank with Young-seong, and hearing that Junichi would offer liquor immediately changed his expression.

“Kyu-seong, I’ll let it slide this time.”

“…”

What’s he letting slide?

Anyway, it wasn’t a bad proposal for me either. As someone sending my brother abroad, I wanted to leave a good impression and take care of him as much as possible.

“If Mr. Kyu-seong is alright with it, we can facilitate the trade at the guild level.”

The guild master stepped in at the right moment.

I nodded in agreement.

“Yes. Thank you. Let’s do business, Mr. Junichi!”

“Hahaha! Wonderful!”

Wait a minute.

Come to think of it, Young-seong was looking into making liquor…

“Mr. Junichi. May I bring up one more thing?”

“Of course.”

“I’m thinking of making liquor from the crops I’ve grown. What do you think?”

“…”

Junichi froze. Not only him but even Hanul beside him gaped and seemed to malfunction.

“Liquor made from Mr. Kyu-seong’s crops… I can’t believe I didn’t think of such a simple idea…”

Does that mean he likes the idea?

Junichi appeared to be collecting his thoughts, then suddenly approached and grabbed my hands.

“Please! Please work with us, Mr. Kyu-seong!”

“You, let go of my brother right now!”

Hanul’s voice came trailing along like a thread attached to a needle.

Strike 158

Prev I TOC I Next

Upon entering the Blessed Snowfields, Hyun-soo received this notification:

[To access the Sage’s Tower, you must hunt all the monsters in the Blessed Snowfields.]

The location of the Sage’s Tower changes every two weeks.

Accordingly, the trials Hyun-soo must face while climbing the mountain also change, and time is required for these changes.

However, Dun completely relieved him of this burden.

‘All the monsters around were levels far above mine.’

Monsters of at least level 330.

When hunting monsters of a higher level, a player gains more experience points.

Additionally, once reaching level 300, the total amount of experience needed to level up increases exponentially.

At this point, the triple experience gain was like a treasure sent from heaven.

Furthermore, before Hyun-soo came to the Blessed Snowfields, the monsters he hunted gave him an average of this much experience:

[You gain 8,862 experience points.]

But now, it has increased to about 24,000 per monster.

[Experience and drop rates are tripled.]

[The total experience gained from the monsters is combined.]

[You gain 1,310,010 experience points.]

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up.]

[The total amount of gold gained from the monsters is combined.]

[You gain 331,689 gold.]

In addition to the miscellaneous items dropped by the mobs.

These items too, tripled, and were simultaneously coming from about 60 monsters.

[You acquire a Eetti’s Claw.]

[You acquire a Snowy Wolf’s Tooth.]

[You acquire a Snow Mountain Orc’s Token…]

The value of these miscellaneous items was also significant.

In Korean won, the gold alone amounted to about 3.4 million won, and the items themselves were worth about 5 million won.

Of course, Hyun-soo awaited something more.

NPCs and players judged as villains could yield experience and gold.

In other words, their Chaos value meant they would even drop money and experience.

And the higher their Chaos value, the more experience and gold they drop.

This could vary from as little as 20% to several times more.

[You have slain Won.]

[His Chaos value is the worst.]

[You have slain Bon.]

[His Chaos value is the worst.]

[You gain 293,013 experience points.]

[You gain 467,310 gold.]

[You have slain Burns…]

[You have leveled up.]

[You have leveled up.]

Hyun-soo managed to level up five times.

It was an unimaginable amount of experience for the 300 level range.

Additionally, from them alone, a total of 1.4 million gold was dropped, and the deceased had dropped the equipment they were wearing.

[You acquire a Blacklight Dagger.]

[You acquire an Assassin’s Mask.]

[You acquire a Crimson Knight’s Longsword.]

‘Epic, epic, unique, epic…’

Everything was replete with such items.

[Your HP is below 3%.]

[You are severely affected by a status ailment.]

[It is difficult to move your body.]

Dun, on his knees, knew about the items his comrades had dropped.

‘We’ve only lost the most important things….’

From as little as 20 million won to as much as 100 million won.

One could say that they played the game just to acquire those items.

Among them, the artifacts belonging to Dun, who was the leader and had the highest level, were the best.

What Dun feared more was this:

If you turn on the friend window, you can check the levels of those registered as friends.

The levels of his comrades shown in the friend window had dropped by at least 12 to as much as 18 compared to just before.

In fact, a drop of more than 10 levels is almost unheard of.

No, it’s practically impossible.

This happened because of the number of people they had killed.

Their Chaos value had become too high due to the number of users they had killed without reason.

The game Ares can sometimes be fair.

If you gain unethically, you will also lose unethically.

“Please, just this once, let it go!”

Dun sincerely begged.

“If I die, I will drop 20 levels. Do you know how hard it is to raise 20 levels from my level…”

He looked as if he wanted to grab onto Hyun-soo’s trouser legs.

“If I drop items here as well…”

“Isn’t that too selfish?”

Hyun-soo said emotionlessly.

“You must have only ever picked on those you could handle, and like you, many others must have worried about their experience and artifact drop rates before they died. They must have felt more miserable and upset, why? Because they were killed without reason.”

Swoosh—

Hyun-soo mercilessly cut his throat.

As if it hurt to even speak anymore.

[Dun’s Chaos value is the worst.]

[You gain 502,301 experience points.]

[You gain 735,203 gold.]

[You acquire the Ring of the Snow King.]

[You have leveled up.]

With this, Hyun-soo achieved a total of 6 levels up here and obtained many valuable artifacts.

Especially, the Ring of the Snow King that Hyun-soo saw was more incredible than he thought.

‘Closest to a legend…’

Then.

Ding!

[You are climbing Mount Beres faster than anyone else.]

‘…?’

Hyun-soo looked puzzled.

‘Does this mean I’m the fastest among the first entrants?’

Thanks to Dun, Hyun-soo had taken a shortcut to where the Sage Tower could be seen.

‘If I had climbed alone, it might have been hard to arrive in three days.’

That’s how rugged and monster-infested the land of Mount Beres was.

And Hyun-soo felt a sense of foreboding.

‘If such a notification appears…’

Notifications don’t appear without reason.

Soon, Hyun-soo could see.

Grrrrrrrrrr—

Suddenly, the blizzard intensified and a fierce gust of wind began to whirl.

Whiiiiiiiiish—

So much snow fell that it became impossible to see.

[A new story begins.]

Hyun-soo’s teeth clacked together at the ominous sound.

[A hundred-year blizzard whirls around.]

[The temperature drops sharply.]

[You are affected by a cold status ailment.]

[Your body shrinks, and your hands and feet might get frostbitten.]

[All stats drop by 20%.]

Ding!

[Sudden Quest: Braving the Blizzard]

Rank: S

Restriction: The one who triggered the new story

Reward: Something left by the God Blacksmith

Penalty for failure: Never being able to meet Sage Arte again.

Description: You have approached the Sage Tower faster than anyone else, and this is closely related to something left by the God Blacksmith. You must absolutely reach the Sage Tower.

Those who complete the new story will receive superior rewards.

As such, the reward states, ‘Something left by the God Blacksmith.’

Hyun-soo realized.

‘To arrive faster, even amidst such adversities.’

That it was a type of trial.

Ssssssssh—

“Argh!”

Hyun-soo was suddenly hit by a sudden gust and blown away.

Buried in the snow that had piled up unnoticed, Hyun-soo shivered from the icy feeling.

Hyun-soo stood up.

‘I must go.’

Something left by the God Blacksmith.

He must obtain those things.

As the days pass, many will discover Hyun’s superior forge.

He needed the power to protect many who believed in and followed him.

Hyun-soo put on the Ring of the Snow King on his finger.

[A warm energy envelops your body.]

In the blizzard where you can’t see even a foot ahead.

‘I will, without fail, go to the Sage Tower.’

A blacksmith who never learned to lose walks there.

***

Ssssssssh—

Grrrrrrrrrr—

The Sage Tower.

Absolute Shield Pehya and Grand Mage Luwon saw the blizzard pounding on the windows.

Suddenly Luwon asked,

“Pehya, can anyone survive out there for half a day?”

“……”

Pehya didn’t say anything.

No matter how superhuman the physique, that and this are different matters.

The fierce blizzard and the snow filling the view would destroy one’s sanity, and it would be difficult to take even a step as the fingertips and toes increasingly freeze.

No matter how strong one is, a natural disaster is just that.

Luwon moistened his throat with warm tea.

“He must be dead already. Not even halfway up Mount Beres.”

Both looked as if to say that it was a good riddance.

“It’s impossible for a blacksmith to survive out there.”

Pehya said with a faint smile,

“I too sought to become a legend when I climbed this Mount Beres.”

That’s not all.

Most of those who aspired to become legends must have climbed this Mount Beres.

To meet Sage Arte, who has been a legend for the longest time and is still alive.

“It took me exactly two days, the mountain was so rugged.”

Luwon also reminisced about that day.

“It took me two days as well. When I tried to fly using ‘Fly,’ the gusts slammed me back down to the ground.”

It was a long time ago.

Back when they were just greenhorns starting to make a name for themselves.

Now, they would reach it in a breath.

They had become much stronger than before.

“Dead from freezing in half a day, that is somewhat pitiful.”

Though they said this, both wore small smiles.

“Let’s go now, no need to wait any longer. I must say we are leaving.”

The two of them left the room together.

The audience hall of the sage, close to the entrance.

Sage Arte, Sword King Barad, and Spear Heaven Ben were seated, maintaining a certain distance.

Rumble—

A gust strong enough to shake the tower was heard.

And before leaving, Luwon spoke up.

“Arte, the test is over.”

In an atmosphere of silence, no one else spoke.

“We were supposed to meet again in two days, but it seems unnecessary now. I should return with Pehya…”

Just then.

“…It’s not over yet.”

Surprised by Arte’s statement, both showed puzzled expressions.

During this, Luwon and Pehya’s heads suddenly turned sharply.

‘Is something coming?’

Their senses were extraordinary.

They could feel something was coming through the blizzard.

Especially Luwon, who was exceptional.

His eyes could see through the walls to the outside.

Snow fluttering madly where the sun had set.

A man was walking towards them, wading through the piled-up snow that reached his stomach.

Luwon almost exclaimed in admiration without realizing it.

But then he pursed his lips and held it back.

Soon, Luwon knew.

The unknown figure that was moving had stopped.

‘Is he dying…?’

Yes, he was indeed dying.

He seems to have lost consciousness and couldn’t move.

‘It’s remarkable, but he will die like this…’

Just then.

“…!?”

Luwon saw.

The dying figure began to move again.

One step, two steps, he took a few steps.

His life force was fading with each step.

And once again he collapsed, but after a while.

‘What is this…’

He stood up again.

Like a small flame on a vast field of snow.

Luwon couldn’t believe it.

Suddenly, the dying being was standing in front of the tower’s door.

Luwon’s pupils trembled.

‘Why, why… He should have already been dead?’

Creak—

Luwon’s gaze fell on the source of the footsteps.

Then, a man appeared.

Pale lips, a face turned deathly white. A body buried under a mound of snow, his physique wouldn’t surprise anyone if he died at any moment.

[Your HP is below 1%.]

Yet, his eyes shone bright, undefeated.

After shaking off the snow from his body and pushing back his wet hair,

He slowly looked up at the legends and said,

“Master Craftsman Hyun (現). I have come to see Sage Arte.”

[You have arrived at the Sage Tower.]

[The hidden level of divine recognition is now accessible.]

Facing the legends, Hyun-soo knew. He had experienced advancements, negotiations, hatching rates, and various other things. The higher that percentage rose, the greater the rewards Hyun-soo received. The divine recognition Hyun-soo was unaware of. The invisible trials during the climb up the mountain. And the item left by the God Blacksmith mentioned in the sudden quest.

[You have reached the Sage Tower faster than any legend in history.]

[You gain 44% recognition.]

[You started climbing the mountain at the lowest level among all the legends in history.]

[You gain 25% recognition.]

[You have reached through the blizzard of the century.]

[Recognition…]

[You have demonstrated a strong mental fortitude surpassing death multiple times.]

[Recognition…]

Amidst endless notifications.

The final notification sends a thrill through Hyun-soo’s heart.

[Your reward is maximized.]

Act 110

Prev I TOC I Next

Bishop Korund slowly chewed over the events that had just unfolded with blinking eyes. He was currently lying on the ground. A cold sensation ran down his back, and at the same time, a dizzying pain radiated through his fingertips.

“Ugh…!” A groan, laden with the echo of a scream, escaped Korund’s lips. Pintel looked down at Korund with eyes as cold as ice.

“You have committed numerous unspeakable blasphemies.” His voice was emotionless, making it impossible to read his feelings. Because Korund had interacted with the man known as ‘Pintel,’ he could tell that something was seriously wrong.

“First, the sin of mocking the esteemed ‘One’ with your filthy mouth.” A certain emotion began to bloom on Pintel’s face, which had been as expressionless as a calm lake.

“Second, the sin of conspiring against that esteemed ‘One.'” What had seemed like an icy face now began to show a cold flame.

“Third, the sin of extending a hand to me, asking me to join in your heinous treachery.”

“You… you stupid bastard! Do you even know who you’re talking about right now?” Korund’s voice, tinged with anger, reached Pintel, who twirled his staff.

Then, sitting in his chair, he spoke. “You must be referring to Sir Julian. Do you think I am unaware and acting like this?”

“You madman…!” Korund spat out a curse in a heated voice. A reddish aura began to shimmer around his body. At the moment Korund’s mana, the element of fire known for its destructive power, began to manifest itself…

Swish!

“Aaargh!”

In a swift and silent move, Pintel’s dagger magic pierced Korund’s body. “In a fight with a wizard, the key is to seize the advantage with a preemptive strike.”

“……”

“You… you thought my ‘dagger magic,’ honed in real combat, would sit idly by while you chanted your slow incantations?” Pintel swung his staff as if conducting. At the end of his staff, sharp ‘daggers’ followed like fish in water.

“Wh… what… why! What did that man ever do for you?” Korund’s words made Pintel’s brow twitch. “Why are you defending that half-breed trash?”

Srrrk.

Pintel stood up again and slowly approached the fallen Korund. “Think carefully, Pintel! If the wizards of the Dawn Society unite against…”

His staff came down on Korund’s waist.

Thud!

The dull sound was accompanied by the loud, foaming noises from Korund’s mouth.

“You blasphemous wretch!”

Thud, thud!

Pintel’s staff struck Korund’s body repeatedly.

“Is that filthy mouth of yours spewing this nonsense?”

Thud!

“Or is it coming from your brain that doesn’t know the meaning of ‘shame’?”

Thud!

“Try spouting off again, you worthless scum!!!”

“Please, calm down, Sir Pintel.”

It was Monsignor, whom Pintel had brought along, who stopped him from mercilessly swinging his staff.

Seeing him, Pintel cleared his throat once and lowered his staff.

“Is everything taken care of?”

“Yes, we have subdued all the soldiers Korund brought.”

“Good job.”

Regaining his composure, Pintel turned his gaze to the fallen Korund.

“Imprison him.”

“Are you not going to kill him?”

“Sir Julian would not wish for that.”

At the mention of ‘Julian,’ Monsignor was slightly taken aback.

“Was it really necessary to go this far in the first place?”

“No, it wasn’t.”

Pintel cut off Monsignor and spoke with a voice full of conviction.

“Before Sir Julian set off for the Holy Nation, when the Grand Archbishop offered him the position of Archbishop, he refused and told me this.”

“What did he say?”

Pintel turned to look at Monsignor, who had asked the question.

-My will is set on a higher place.

Higher than the Archbishop.

Pintel knew what that meant.

He had decided to clear the path around Julian for his future.

It was the least he could do to show respect to the one who had chosen him and given him an opportunity.

“No, it’s nothing.”

Therefore, Pintel decided to keep the conversation he had with ‘Julian’ to himself, knowing that what was said here could harm him.

“How is the movement of the Azure Lion Knights?”

Pintel quickly changed the subject.

“Alhassar, as a member, it shouldn’t be difficult for you to grasp the internal movements, right?”

“Currently, it seems that not only the Azure Lion Knights but other knight orders are also keeping an eye on the Dawn Society.”

“Hmm.”

Pintel let out a short groan.

“Among them, it appears that ‘The Closed Eyes’ is making the most noticeable moves.”

“The Closed Eyes won’t pose much of a threat.”

Even though it was an imperial institution, its key figure, ‘Julian,’ was affiliated with the Dawn Society.

“There’s no way Sir Julian doesn’t know what’s going on now.”

Pintel believed that a significant change would happen soon.

He maintained his faith that Sir Julian would be the cornerstone of that change.

“Be loyal to those who have given you their trust.”

It was the family motto of the House of Obradin.

“For now, I will return. Make it look like nothing happened around here.”

“Yes, I will take care of it.”

Watching Monsignor nod, Pintel stepped into the darkness.

To do something else.

***

Wizards and knights do not get along well.

Naturally, they share the power pie within the empire, so saying they are on good terms would be a lie.

“Damn, have you ever seen such a madman! I asked for tea, but this is just hot water with a red color!”

The only fortunate thing about the person named ‘Flügel’ is that he is very egalitarian.

He does not discriminate based on status or profession; he treats everyone equally.

He treats everyone like a dog.

He is known as the beagle, the rabid dog, no, the mad wizard of the magical community.

“But, Sir Flügel, didn’t you say that weak tea is the proper tea…”

“You fool!”

With a wave of Flügel’s hand, the wizard serving the tea was lifted into the air.

“Think about it up there!”

“I-I’m sorry. I’ll prepare it again, Sir Flügel!”

“You should have done that from the start.”

Flügel clicked his tongue once, and with another wave of his hand, the wizard fell back to the ground.

“Ugh…”

Groaning, the wizard quickly approached the teacup.

Only one teacup was moved.

From the beginning, he hadn’t even served water to me or Meyer.

As expected of a mad wizard.

“Leave that! I need to wet my throat, after all.”

“Y-yes!”

As the wizard hurried out, Flügel stroked his long beard.

“Hmph, now, back to the main point.”

“Yes.”

“You show up out of nowhere and demand a resonance stone?”

Demanding like a dog, indeed.

I wanted to say his words were too harsh, but even to my eyes, the face reflected in Flügel’s eyes deserved curses.

“Yes.”

“Brazen fool, you speak as if it’s the most natural thing!”

“I want an answer, Sir Flügel.”

“You already know what I want to say, don’t you?”

Of course, he would refuse.

We aren’t close, and the reputation of ‘Julian’ is practically in the gutter within the institution.

“That’s unfortunate.”

“Hmph, unfortunate indeed. You must have known you’d be refused.”

He’s right.

If it were as simple as saying, “Give me a resonance stone!” and receiving one, I wouldn’t have brought Meyer along.

If he were a reasonable person to talk to, the players wouldn’t have given him the nickname ‘mad wizard’ out of frustration.

“Judging by your appearance, it seems you plan to use it in the slums.”

Despite his nickname, the ‘mad wizard’s’ skills are genuine.

“So you know.”

“Of course. I knew they were conducting some ‘research’ involving demons there.”

Flügel, who had immediately seen through my reasons for seeking a resonance stone, glared at me with a disinterested expression.

“Research on demons is a fascinating subject. Thanks to that, I’ve been personally reviewing the reports on soul stones.”

The soul stone research reports. As I recall, it’s Aileen who is currently researching soul stones.

‘Aileen de Donassien.’

Now that I think about it, she is also a member of the Donassien family.

Just like Aiden.

What would happen if she were to become an enemy?

A fifth-tier wizard of the ‘Barlow Rank’ would be a troublesome opponent, no matter what element they wielded.

“If you use the resonance stone, it would help you find the place where the research is being conducted.”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“Is it an order from the Imperial Family?”

I shook my head at Flügel’s question.

“It’s a personal matter.”

If it were related to the ‘Imperial Family,’ Flügel would have no choice but to hand over the resonance stone.

However, if it were related to the ‘Imperial Family,’ I wouldn’t have come here ‘directly’ like this but would have followed the ‘official procedures.’

“Then it’s something I can ignore.”

Flügel smirked and stroked his beard.

“Surely, you came here to interfere with that research.”

I didn’t respond and listened quietly to Flügel’s words.

“Why would you want to ruin something interesting when they’re offering to research it for you?”

“Even if they’re conducting human experiments? On children, no less?”

“Ha ha ha ha ha!”

Flügel, who had shown discomfort until now, began to laugh heartily.

He kept stroking his beard and looked at me with a gaze full of contempt.

“To think I would hear talk of humanity from the executioner’s mouth! I’ve lived long enough to see everything!”

This old geezer, he’s lived way too long but still talks nonsense.

“It’s laughable to hear you discuss magic with such a petty moral compass, but your earlier words were so different from the path you’ve walked until today that I can’t help but laugh!”

Indeed, the words I just uttered are not something ‘Julian’ would typically say.

Even so, the reason I chose those words was to provoke Meyer’s anger, who lives in the slums.

Splaash!

Meyer picked up a cup from the table and, without hesitation, splashed its contents on Flügel.

“You old geezer! I’ve really lost it this time!”

“Miss Meyer, weren’t you listening rather than just watching until now?”

Zap.

Meyer glared at me.

“I’ve really lost it this time!”

That’s right. Even if your mouth is crooked, your words should be straight.

Flügel, drenched in tea, stroked his beard with an indifferent expression.

“What an ill-mannered girl. With a wave of my hand, I could end your life in an instant…”

Flügel trailed off as he turned his gaze to Meyer.

Was he taken aback by Meyer’s appearance, which could captivate a man’s heart?

Heh, as if.

As I mentioned earlier, Flügel is a eunuch.

“So, Sir Flügel, have your thoughts changed a bit now?”

The reason I brought Meyer here while using the name of the ‘Black Knight’ was to exploit that talent unique to her.

The Reception Room of Speda Castle.

Unlike the cold raging outside, the warmth of the heating greeted us. Originally, we were supposed to hold a grand and lengthy welcoming ceremony. But considering the weather, we quickly finished it and the satisfied guests were promptly led to the reception room, settling comfortably on the warm sofas with content smiles.

“The north is indeed chilly.”

If even the high-ranking nobles, whose default expression is poker-faced, show smiles, it’s truly a significant display of emotion. No matter how elevated their status, unless they’re at least an expert, like the Luciana family, they’re just mere amateurs who can’t help but be greatly influenced by the weather.

As the maids approached with various snacks to suit each guest’s taste, a neatly dressed elderly butler, who had been meticulously observing the guests’ expressions, discreetly approached us.

“It’s been a while, miss.”

It was Yegor, whom we hadn’t seen in a long time. His sharp, sparkling eyes, even amidst his white hair, revealed his sharpness.

“And Father?”

“In recent times, the incursions of the demons have intensified. The Duke and even the Young Master have left their seats. Originally, I should also be at the front lines…”

But to welcome the guests, one must have the appropriate status. In essence, as the second-in-command of the Duke’s household, Yegor, if he’s at that level, he should be sufficient to welcome the members of other noble houses.

“I see. You’ve been working hard.”

“Not at all. It’s my role as the second-in-command, after all. By the way… is Hans fulfilling his duties?”

A sharp gaze, seemingly evaluating, swept over me, as if questioning whether I had been doing my job properly all this time.

“He’s handling his duties as expected.”

Luciana replied with a sly smile, deflecting the question to me. In that brief exchange, mischief sparkled in the sapphire-like eyes, subtly teasing me.

‘… How mischievous,’

A clear departure from the original, which didn’t typically reveal her emotions. Thanks to that, my side of the exchange was quite advantageous. A momentary glimpse of humanity seeped through the cracks of her perfect demeanor. The special reaction she showed only to me! How could I accurately describe that beauty in detail?

“… Hans Byron?”

In the moment my gaze shifted, a chillingly low voice pierced my ears.

“Ahem, Chamberlain, I always strive for perfection. I ensure there’s no shortage in serving Lady Luciana.”

“You’re still the same… with your unnecessarily firm confidence and audacity. If not re-educated.”

Yegor, wiping away the corner of his eye, moved to the head of the table.

He soon straightened his posture, bowing his waist. His hand rested on his chest, forming an ideal angle starting from the arms. It was a textbook-perfect posture.

“I apologize for the lack of hospitality, even though Lady Roberk and Lord Trehar have traveled a long way.”

Following this came an apology. At Yegor’s low-toned words, Theodore clapped his hands.

“You haven’t explained our internal affairs to us yet. Lift your head, Chamberlain. I, too, have visited out of great interest in the notorious monsters of the north.”

After seeing Theodore’s grin, I could breathe a sigh of relief.

‘Something seemed off when they were separately called upon as soon as we arrived. Seems like the negotiations behind the scenes are successful.’

Maintaining dignity was paramount to nobility. Fortunately, it seemed that the conversations behind the scenes went well enough to forgive our “lack of hospitality.”

“Let’s get to the point. As I expected, the Wendigo creatures have been stirring.”

“Indeed, Lady Luciana. You are correct.”

A paper emerged onto the desk where we gathered. It depicted the upper body of a stag represented by sturdy antlers and humanoid lower limbs.

“This is the monster you all must deal with, known as the Wendigo.”

“It looks peculiar.”

Camilla furrowed her brows.

“Well, isn’t it quite decent as far as monster designs go?”

“As peculiar as its appearance, its abilities are unique.”

Unlike me, Yegor adeptly supported the noblewoman’s remark.

“Abilities?”

“Yes, they can… mimic others’ voices.”

Everyone leaned in as the elderly man’s voice became more serious.

“The nickname ‘Enchanting Wendigo’ wasn’t given for nothing. They mimic the voices of prey to lure and hunt. Humans are also among their prey.”

The origin of the Wendigo stems from ancient demon folklore, where they seduce and abduct humans with their voices.

Even knowing this, it was difficult to distinguish, as they were remarkably similar.

‘In the original story, they mimicked the voices of their beloved ones. To René, it mimicked the voice of the main target, and to the candidates, it mimicked the voice of someone they were emotionally attached to.’

It’s fortunate if they’re just limited to voices. Their specs alone are formidable, and some even resort to counterfeit tactics.

Thanks to this, it was a course that led directly to a bad ending if you didn’t know the right strategy.

“So, even if you hear someone else’s voice, don’t pay attention. It’s definitely their trickery.”

“Understood. Any other precautions?”

“While not as formidable as facing a Yetti, the stag’s upper body isn’t just for show. Their charge with those hefty antlers can be quite threatening, so be cautious.”

“Come to think of it, I’ve heard before. The most injurious animal across the Pacific was none other than the moose.”

Certainly, once hit by the thick horn rising into the sky, it was unlikely that one would be safe.

“While naturally shy and prone to fleeing from humans, they’re not just some ordinary monsters. They have a habit of attacking the surroundings as soon as they’re provoked, which can be a headache.”

“Is it that time now?”

“Yes. Thanks to your support, we can breathe a little easier. While it may not threaten the residents of the castle, it’s menacing to those outside and the patrolling soldiers.”

Once again, the head lowered in a nod from the elder.

“Although it’s in the form of a dispatched lesson, I request. Since the Duke also advised not to spare support, if you return after dealing with the Wendigo, I’ll offer you a fitting reward.”

[Quest Issued!]

[Defeat the Wendigo and bring peace to the North!]

[Reward: Bonus points, Vault Viewing ticket (Limited to Basement 2), ???]

A Note Viewing Pass. For a dispatched lesson, it was quite a generous reward.

‘Well, in games, you usually encounter Wendigos in the late game. It’s actually odd that you can defeat one in your first year.’

Normally.

At this stage, the protagonist player, who would be scorned for being a commoner maiden, only has a few healing skills.

Still, there wasn’t much to worry about.

“Leave it to me. Now I’ll personally hunt down the prey I’ve only watched from behind.”

After all, there’s Luciana, who’s already an expert on our side!

That’s it.

“Don’t worry. After all, it’s just a monster.”

“…Hmph. I’ll just deal with sandworms.”

The members supporting Luciana were also from other noble families. As proven by their admission scores, each of them excelled in their abilities.

“With this level of power, dealing with a Wendigo is child’s play.”

While the Wendigo is one of the three major monsters in the North, it’s not on par with demons or Yettis. As long as we’re prepared for mental attacks, including hallucinations, it should be manageable.

And that fact.

Yegor, who has lived in the North, knows it well.

“Take this.”

“As you command.”

His earlier words about not sparing support were not lies.

The main source of funding for the organization. Several bottles of expensive holy water were placed on the desk.

“Some special specimens also use magic. It’ll be a big help then.”

“Hallucinations, huh? I remember hearing about that from Brother. He said it shows the most painful memory from the opponent’s mind.”

Luciana, now with a more serious expression, picked up the holy water. Following suit, I also grabbed one. ‘With this, we’re good.’

Essential item for fighting Wendigos. With the strategy known and high-concentration holy water prepared, our preparations were thorough.

“Let’s set off. If it’s a Wendigo, it’s likely to inhabit coniferous forests.”

“…You seem to know well.”

“And who taught me?”

Like me, she gave a warm smile towards the elderly butler dressed in a servant’s attire.

***

The cold in the North is of a kind not commonly experienced elsewhere. Especially compared to the Western and Southern regions, where the climate remains hot throughout the year.

“Sigh… My ears are freezing.”

Camilla, shivering, wrapped her reddened ears with both hands. While they would warm up eventually due to body heat, her appearance was different from usual, and I couldn’t help but smile.

While everyone had donned winter gear, they couldn’t wear anything that would hinder their movement or senses, considering they didn’t know when combat might occur. Hence, it was inevitable that their ears would feel the chill exposed to extreme cold.

‘But still, with the magic potion given, it shouldn’t be that bad.’

“Lady Roberk is overly dramatic.”

“Aren’t you bothered at all?”

“Haha, it’s colder than Eastern winters, but no big deal! Just overcome it with spirit!”

As Camilla openly showed her disdain towards the passionate Theodore, she turned towards me. It seemed like she was inadvertently scheming to get closer to me.

“I’m getting annoyed to death.”

Accompanying the sharp sarcasm whispered in my ear.

‘Seems like she was partly serious about being disgusted.’

While Luciana was temporarily absent, searching for signs of the Wendigo, it was a rare moment for just the two of us.

“Did you receive information from Wolbaek?”

“It isn’t for nothing that she became the leader of the thieves’ guild at that age.”

Thud-

Through her lips, a sound filled with anger came through.

“The duke’s wife was killed, and yet he’s living quite comfortably, even flaunting it.”

“Where?”

“In the Central region. Moreover, near the academy.”

A face I’d seen before. The face that confronted me when I was arrested.

“It seems escaping won’t be easy.”

The reason for staying quiet despite knowing the whereabouts was simple. She probably wouldn’t arrest until she had all the evidence.

Since he, as a commoner, harmed a noble, it could even lead to execution.

“Would you like me to help you with the arrest?”

“I’ll be grateful.”

“For what? I’m grateful just because you’re keeping quiet.”

She shrugged in response, also with a bitter smile.

“Hey, I found the Wendigo!”

Luciana’s voice came from not far away. Just as our eyes met, without needing to say anything, we dashed into the snowfield.

“Let’s take care of it quickly and return.”

“You’re very enthusiastic.”

Perhaps due to the dense forest, despite setting off around sunrise, the tall trees blocked the sunlight, casting a natural darkness. It was only enough to barely see Camilla running ahead.

“Hey, I found the Wendigo!”

Even amidst that, the voice continued to echo. Whether due to limited visibility or the ear-piercing nature of the voice, Camilla grumbled irritably.

“How many times do you have to say it? We’re coming!”

“Just a moment.”

A strong sense of unease gripped me. ‘Come to think of it, why would Luciana’s voice sound so urgent?’

With her skills, she could handle the Wendigo alone if needed.

– Lady Luciana, are you still with the Wendigo?

– Hans? What’s up?

– Is the Wendigo still there?

– No, I’m still searching, so don’t rush me. Can’t seem to find where it’s hiding. Damn it. Got us trapped good.

I firmly grasped Camilla’s shoulders, where green hair flowed down.

“What?”

“Take the whip.”

I immediately held a dagger resembling the color of the forest in my right hand, and holy water in my left, in case of unexpected situations.

“Hey, I found the Wendigo! Hey, I found the Wendigo! Hey, I found the Wendigo!”

First was Luciana’s voice, then mine, and finally Theodore’s.

Only then did Camilla, seeming to sense the unease, stop in her tracks.

“This is…”

“We’ve both been fooled.”

Standing still, we surveyed our surroundings cautiously. Among the shadows of the trees, something suddenly emerged. A bipedal stag. Its identity was all too obvious. As the stag, which had been staring at us intently, tilted its head in confusion.

The reindeer’s forehead split open, and from within, a jet-black tongue emerged, uttering a familiar voice.

“Hey, we found the Wendigo!”

“Copying my voice too, huh? That’s a bit unsettling.”

Camilla’s hand pointed towards the creature’s forearm, indicating a shiver-inducing sight.

As the reindeer approached, it prepared for combat, digging the ground.

“Gruhh…”

Now it seemed to have stopped mimicking human voices. Well, perhaps there was no need now that it had lured its prey.

“Gruh!”

“Kraaad…”

“Churp.”

Amidst the monster’s roars, the sound of the reindeer’s grinding teeth echoed.

…And the sound of its appetite returning.

“Just one. Seems rather underestimated. Two of us should be enough.”

“Tch, just when Speda isn’t around….”

The sharp whistling of the whip pierced the air. Simultaneously.

“Gruuhh!”

The owner of the yellow fur turned into a flash and charged towards us.

“No. I will not cooperate with you.”

Aiden was slightly taken aback by the unexpected answer, but he masked his surprise with a cough to lighten the mood.

“That’s surprising. Didn’t you want revenge?”

Aiden knew that Gerard considered Julian a mortal enemy.

Even before their relationship completely soured, Gerard could never have liked Julian, an outsider who rolled into their lives.

“For someone like you to tuck his tail between his legs…”

“How dare you…”

Gerard’s displeasure was evident in his response to Aiden’s taunt.

If Gerard also refused, it would be nearly impossible to confront Julian alone, so Aiden had to keep provoking Gerard’s desire for revenge to bring him into the fold.

It didn’t matter whether he used Gerard and discarded him afterward or kept him as an ally.

Even if Gerard exploded in anger, it didn’t matter.

Using that anger would only increase the chances of dealing with Julian to the point where even Gerard’s absurd attitude would be tolerable.

As the intense anger gradually subsided, Gerard, feigning calm, expressed his refusal more subtly.

“Even if I were to cooperate with you, I see nothing to gain from someone without a clear vision.”

“What?”

Aiden also knew this.

There are no perfect alliances. This was a tug-of-war for mutual benefit.

However, Gerard’s words a moment ago carried no ulterior motives.

It merely implied, “Even if I join you, we can’t kill Julian.”

“So, you’re completely backing down, Gerard?”

If his intention was purely to take control of the conversation, Aiden would have clicked his tongue in contempt.

If he had thought of extracting more information, he would have readily offered some.

However, Gerard purely meant, “You can’t defeat Julian.”

Aiden’s displeasure doubled.

The shortsightedness of Gerard, who used to be a ‘Bishop,’ was revolting.

To think he once held the same position as someone like this.

“If you’re always standing tall, you’re just asking to be killed.”

“Will you continue living like this? Running away, endlessly running, what can you possibly gain?”

“I’ll rise when someone with more influence than you rises.”

Someone with more influence than him?

Only two people came to Aiden’s mind.

Archbishop Eleanor and the Grand Archbishop Tenellon.

Though temporarily, Eleanor could be considered on Julian’s side.

The fact that she had remained silent and inactive so far was proof of that.

“His Excellency the Grand Archbishop favors Julian.”

“Soon, Lord Tenellon will also open his eyes. If he realizes that…”

Gulp.

Aiden heard Gerard swallow hard.

“If he realizes that Julian is the ‘Black Knight.'”

Julian, the Black Knight?

“That’s insane.”

“That’s beyond delusional.”

Aiden clicked his tongue at the thought.

“Do you have any evidence? If all you have are baseless suspicions, you won’t be able to convince Lord Tenellon, let alone me.”

“I have no evidence.”

Of course… it’s delusion.

“But I have strong convictions.”

“People say you were the ‘Black Knight’ yourself.”

Gerard glared at Aiden with bloodshot eyes.

“The Black Knight belonged to the ‘Nameless Gang,’ and you owned that private militia, didn’t you? The Black Knight’s actions ultimately cornered ‘Pintel’ and provided you with a new opportunity, didn’t they?”

“That’s a trap laid by Julian!”

“If Julian were capable of such a grand plan, he would have already noticed that you and I are talking like this.”

Aiden sneered and looked at the trembling Gerard with disdain.

“Although your behavior is surprising, I too know that Julian is skilled in deception. Still, the fact that you believe in his ‘skill’ makes you look like a fanatic.”

Seeing Gerard filled with fear and dread, Aiden took a step back.

“I didn’t expect our conversation to end this way, but I don’t need a dog with its tail between its legs.”

“You didn’t expect this, huh…”

Gerard’s expression changed, and he sneered. To anyone watching, he might seem deranged. His emotions were quickly shifting from anger to fear, to sneering, to resignation.

“Thanks to your words, I’m even more certain now. Aiden, you will die at Julian’s hands.”

Aiden, stunned by Gerard’s blatant curse, didn’t respond. He simply left the filthy street and boarded his carriage, which then began to move.

“Kill Gerard.”

The coachman’s eyes flickered briefly at the dry but forceful command, then returned to normal.

“And contact Felkor. Tell him we need ‘materials’ for the research, so he should look for children in the slums.”

***

A large man, who had once bared his teeth at me during our first meeting and greeted me with a punch, had come to see me. He pointed to the scar on his eye, a remnant of our first encounter, and lamented over the grudge it caused.

Though he had exceptional skills befitting his rank of ‘Monsignor,’ he was easily intimidated by my presence.

“Th-that’s right. How could I have brought false information to Sir Julian?”

Now, this man was wagging his tail in front of me. I never thought I would end up associating positively with him. Truly, you never know what life will bring.

“Hmm…”

I let out a short sigh, and the giant before me, Felkor, flinched slightly.

He had brought information about Aiden. Though his words didn’t seem false, it was my job to be skeptical.

After all, weren’t we adversaries? Even if I had broken his pride once, I didn’t think he would submit so easily.

“Sir Felkor.”

“Y-yes!”

“You’ve made a wise decision. As I mentioned before, Sir Aiden has not properly assessed your abilities.”

But is there any need to be harsh now? Whether he has truly changed his allegiance or not, it’s better to keep him on side. Death is swift, but obedience lasts.

“So, what information have you brought?”

Besides, it’s worth hearing what news he has.

“It seems Aiden is seeking children from the slums for his research.”

Felkor spoke formally, hands neatly clasped together. I was still not used to speaking so politely, and it seemed even more unnatural for him.

“Children…”

I trailed off. The thought of using children who hadn’t even had the chance to bloom as experimental subjects for personal gain was revolting.

“What should we do? I think it’s fine to let him search for children for now.”

Felkor’s inhumane suggestion continued, oblivious to my inner disgust.

No, you bastard, that’s not okay!

As I pondered for a moment, a good idea came to mind.

“Let’s leave it alone for now.”

“Leave it… you say?”

“Yes.”

“But if there’s no result over time, Aiden will…”

“Don’t worry.”

I smiled more broadly than ever.

“It won’t take long.”

***

After Felkor left, I headed to the Magic Tower as promised to Meyer.

It was to prepare a ‘Resonance Stone’ to locate Aiden’s laboratory.

‘For that, I need the cooperation of the Magic Tower.’

In truth, obtaining the Resonance Stone itself wasn’t that difficult.

‘As a member of the ‘Closed Eyes,’ if I request it, they would naturally think it’s for hunting demons and give it to me.’

But.

‘My goal is to secretly obtain the Resonance Stone without anyone knowing.’

It might be overthinking, but if I make a move, the Secretary’s Office will record the Resonance Stone’s removal. If the ‘Dawn Society’ finds out, Bishop Aiden might access that information and discover my intention, right?

To bypass all these procedures, I have to negotiate directly with one of the ‘Three Sages’ supporting the Magic Tower.

That shouldn’t be too difficult.

‘The Pure White Flugel.’

Full name, Flugel Koranoia.

He is the mentor of ‘Agnes,’ who survived to the final list of the 4th Prince’s Guard.

He is the closest to what I consider a ‘wizard,’ and at the same time,

‘He’s a lunatic obsessed with magic.’

That’s the public opinion about ‘Flugel.’

An irritable old man who sacrificed his entire life solely for ‘magic’ and ‘knowledge.’

This old man, who has lived for over 150 years thanks to magic, is astonishing not only because of his age.

‘To dedicate oneself entirely to magic…’

Cough!

Damn, I couldn’t help but cough.

The ‘Manual of the Flowers.’

You’ve probably heard of it at least once somewhere.

He is the man who actually practiced what was only talked about.

In other words,

He is a eunuch.

Poor guy…

But I admire his incredible mental strength.

The determination to easily cut off his own body for the sake of ‘magic.’

From a Confucian perspective of ‘the body, hair, and skin received from parents,’ he could be called unfilial.

Isn’t the reason why the Empire praises him as a ‘sage’ and calls him ‘pure white’ actually out of sympathy?

‘Hmm… that could be…’

Anyway, the only one who can somewhat rein in that irritable old man is Meyer, who is beside me now.

A genius born of the times.

A wizard with a definite style.

A prodigy who proudly showcases his abilities among the many outstanding talents.

Don’t they say that geniuses inspire each other?

To ‘Flugel,’ that person is ‘Meyer.’

“Ahhh… I saw something I shouldn’t have.”

Meyer, who was following me, muttered.

“Look at those hermits who are so engrossed in magic, they’ve never experienced social life even a bit!”

“Be quiet.”

“They probably don’t even know how to put on shoes! They’ll try to solve everything with magic and make a fool of themselves!”

I brought my face closer to the boisterous Meyer and gestured for her to be quiet.

With a very bright smile.

Meyer gulped and nodded.

Sure. You don’t want to die, right?

‘Besides, you’re a wizard too!’

I wanted to say, but she hasn’t yet gone through the ‘official’ procedures to become a wizard.

In other words, she hasn’t received any formal education.

So, while she can wield ‘magic,’ she doesn’t consider herself a ‘wizard.’

‘In that sense, this is also an elitist mindset.’

It’s like she’s drawing a line, saying, ‘I’m different from you!’

Well, it doesn’t really matter to me,

“So, who is it that I need to see at the Magic Tower?”

“There is someone. A distinguished person.”

I answered Meyer’s blunt question vaguely.

Meyer, showing a slightly dissatisfied expression, soon turned her gaze to the towering peak of the Magic Tower.

A place where wizards gather to practice high-level magic and exchange knowledge and wisdom.

Looking at such a place, she could only say,

“If I jump from the top, I’ll die, right?”

What on earth is living in this girl’s head?

“Have you ever imagined researching magic at the top of that tower?”

“Dying seems like a better option.”

Meyer uttered a harsh critique.

Yeah, enjoy the moment.

You’re about to become a graduate student there.

***

In truth, Korund was aware that the superiority complex based on the purity of blood had transcended its historical roots and taken on a new meaning.

The once pure blood of wizards had begun to show signs of ‘impurity.’

However, the moment they denied their roots, the purity they had so staunchly advocated would become meaningless.

Despite this, wizards continued to uphold ‘pureblood’ principles.

“Allowing a half-breed into our domain is unthinkable.”

Whether the blood is impure, thin, or pure.

The moment one calls themselves a ‘pureblood,’ a connection is formed.

“What do you think? It’s obvious that if we stay like this, our position will become precarious.”

Using that ‘connection,’ Korund decided to overthrow Julian.

“Though Eleanor has taken the position of Archbishop, his current presence is so imposing that he can dismiss ‘Archbishops’ as trivial.”

As per Aiden’s plan.

“Indeed, his skills are formidable. He accurately grasped my intentions and caught me off guard last time.”

Following Aiden’s plan, he contacted other bishops to form a new faction aimed at overthrowing Julian.

“It was an incredible fear.”

Korund recalled the incident at the Arena.

The face looking up at him with a smile that seemed to see through everything.

The emotion he felt then could definitely be described as ‘fear.’

“At the same time, I thought that if we don’t deal with him now, there will be no place for us anymore.”

Saying this, Korund looked at the man in front of him.

A proponent of ‘pureblood’ ideology who shared his peripheral problems.

At the same time, a fellow wizard and someone in the position of ‘bishop.’

“Pintel, you can understand me, right?”

The man, who had been silently listening to Korund, slowly lifted his head.

With a very cold and furious expression.

Survival 122

Prev I TOC I Next

After the assault incident I led was somewhat resolved, the first class began.

“Look there, the Crown Prince didn’t attend.”

“Seems the injuries from the attack at the last coming-of-age ceremony are real.”

“I heard… cough. It was quite a serious injury.”

“If we make a wrong move, we might end up like that too…”

The atmosphere was more chaotic than usual.

Even though they were nobles, the intruders who invaded without hesitation caused fear.

It wasn’t unreasonable to harbor fear.

‘Being hostages here without guarantee of safety… How unsettling it must be.’

It was a gateway to becoming a true noble, a small social circle, but in fact, they were hostages held by the families under the imperial law.

Even if they felt extreme anxiety, it didn’t mean they could return to their families unless they were willing to give up their noble status.

But crisis meant opportunity.

There were those who raised their status through this Kerzo’s intrusion.

Representatively, Luciana stood up to them boldly.

And including her, the first-year students who flexibly dealt with the assault and performed well.

“Tch. Without nursing her fiance, why did she come to the class?”

“In such a serious situation where the line of succession might be interrupted… She seems rather relaxed. She could have skipped class anyway, so why bother coming?”

Of course, there were also those who criticized Luciana without regard to factions.

“Quiet! Please focus on the class.”

Nevertheless, amidst such an atmosphere, the Professor continued the class nonchalantly.

‘He’s quite calm, considering.’

Nobles could hold him accountable, and he could be discouraged by that. Yet, seeing him confidently defend his dormitory made it clear he was quite a character.

“The participation rate of first-years is too low, so I’ll announce it again.”

Professor Marks, who had now become quite familiar, brought to mind a notice I had seen on the bulletin board before.

[Special Class Recruitment for Dispatched Missions]

[Subjugation of Northern Monsters]

As soon as I saw it, a semi-transparent status window appeared above my head.

[Quest Initiated!]

[A dispatch class is a special class that takes place in a different area outside the academy.]

[Participate in the dispatch class.]

[Reward: Bonus points, ???]

It was a quest and a notice, something often seen in the original work.

It’s likely that what Professor Marks mentioned is related to this.

The Northern region, and moreover, a matter directly requested by the Speda family.

As it was a subject that all A-class students had to take, it seemed that quite talented first-years had gathered.

“If you participate in the dispatched mission to the North, you will receive extra credit for all classes, including mine. Those interested, please apply.”

However, before the professor finished his speech, the classroom quickly fell silent.

“…No one?”

“I’d like to ask, Professor Marks.”

Representing everyone, Luke raised his hand.

Under the slightly drooping hem of his clothes, the jewelry-adorned accessories glittered, attracting half of the students’ attention gathered here.

More precisely, the attention of the nobles’ faction.

‘Well, now he’s practically the representative of the noble faction.’

Originally the leader, Riu Caspera’s influence had somewhat waned after losing to me in our duel.

And in her place,

The nobles of the noble faction found a perfect replacement and installed him as their leader.

Right, the son of the Golden Duke, who controls a quarter of the upper echelon, remarked, “Isn’t it mainly the second and third years who participate in dispatched missions? I’m curious why suddenly even distant us are being dragged into this.”

“Well, um…”

Professor Marks seemed uncomfortable, trailing off.

‘Oh, I’m curious about that too.’

Originally, dispatched missions were part of the curriculum mainly after the second year in the original work.

It was an area of practical experience not permitted for freshmen.

A special class focused on battling monsters in various regions and exploring unknown dungeons!

…However, they would probably only go to places already explored by adventurers or mercenaries.

To put it nicely, it was real-world training with guaranteed safety.

To put it bluntly, it was exploitation in exhausted areas and labor exploitation.

That’s what dispatched missions were.

Even with the peculiarity of this mission being in the North, the mechanics and rewards would ultimately be similar.

Nevertheless, despite such a future, it was quite an attractive option for academy students.

The reason being…

“Of course, it’s good to receive extra credit. But for us, it’s also true that it raises unnecessary suspicions and makes it difficult to approach rashly. Wouldn’t it be better to at least explain the reasons?”

Aspiring to be the student council president.

Or rather, aiming for the power and honor that would come after that, the nobles couldn’t afford to miss out on extra credit.

‘Moreover, considering the academy’s special rules.’

In a place like this, where even small social circles were the same, electing a student council president without distinguishing grades was one of the biggest honors one could achieve here.

For lower noble children, just being elected as president or a candidate was enough to receive offers for scouting or marriage counseling upon graduation, regardless of their abilities.

It was a sweet honor that every student who entered the academy dreamed of at least once.

Of course.

Even if it’s helpful like extra credit, since the dispatched mission itself is practical, it’s true that it comes with risks.

That’s why the participation of first-year students, especially those whose skills are lacking, is particularly low.

“Well, fine. It’s not a big problem to let you know.”

After a moment of contemplation, Professor Marks nodded and spoke up.

“In simple terms, you’re being acknowledged, students.”

“…Acknowledged?”

“From the entrance exam to the recent attack. You have shown your abilities. That’s why the principal decided that you can handle dispatched missions as well.”

Suddenly, his gaze shifted to Luciana.

“Perhaps, the next student council president might come from the current first-year.”

At that moment, I could see it.

Those who were considering conceding the position to someone else, like me.

And those like Luke, who had already given up and were only seeking personal gain.

Excluding those groups, all the nobles’ eyes followed Marks’s gaze to Luciana with jealous glares.

Hmph.

I covered my slightly upturned lips with my hand.

‘They’re seeing Luciana as a competitor.’

They were truly like frogs at the bottom of a well.

It was quite amusing how those who wouldn’t last even a few seconds against her considered her competition.

Just look at the recent attack incident.

Among Class A, only half… no, even that was questionable if they could hold their ground.

Elizabeth, who seemed to share my thoughts, met my gaze.

-Isn’t it amusing? These ignorant fools running amok without knowing their place.

She, who received my silent agreement, also pursed her lips with a smile mixed with ridicule.

-Agreed. Dreaming of reaching heights even though you’ve never tried to catch a single monster.

Reading her lips, unable to use consonants yet, I recalled past memories.

The Northern Monster Subjugation. It was already experienced during Luciana’s adulthood ceremony.

And considering she had experienced vampire and werewolf attack incidents, what could possibly be difficult?

Back then…

“Well, it’s just a ‘surface reason.’ There’s a real reason behind it.”

At Professor’s words, wiping away the corner of my eyes, I had no choice but to stop the conversation I was having secretly with Elizabeth.

“Oh, what’s that?”

“Whether it’s the second or third year, no one volunteered to participate. That’s why even the first years were given the opportunity.”

It’s strange.

Not participating in the dispatched mission, especially when the competition for the student council president was fierce.

At the moment when Luke and the curious nobles, including me, were questioning, Marks answered coldly.

“It was supposed to go smoothly. Surely the academy didn’t even know they would make the absurd demand for students to subjugate the Northern Three Great Monsters.”

“The Northern Three Great Monsters?”

“Yes. They’re famous for being the fiercest in the entire Manhett Empire.”

Gulp.

Those who were blinded by extra credit began to realize reality one by one.

“What should we do?”

“The Northern Three Great Monsters… I haven’t even tried to catch monsters in the East.”

“It’s incredibly cold there. Can we even catch monsters there?”

“Ahem. If the seniors had reasons to decline, then if we interfere…”

“Right. We can’t tarnish their honor.”

They should just give up because they’re scared.

Caught up in the rationalization stemming from giving up like the seniors did, they couldn’t help but kneel before it.

Amidst this, someone raised their hand.

A familiar rose-adorned ring was on that finger.

“I’ll do it.”

The classroom was once again filled with a strange silence.

“I proposed it, but is it okay if I ask a question?”

“Go ahead.”

“Aren’t you already the top student? Even without going on the dispatched mission with an overwhelming difference, you could maintain your position, couldn’t you?”

Luciana, who represented everyone, grinned at the old man’s question.

As her hair cascaded down her shoulders like melted silver, her sharp voice pierced everyone’s hearts.

“What a meaningless question. The Speda family must always remain at the top.”

The Red Queen Effect.

A theory that even if one organism evolves, other surrounding organisms cannot achieve victory by transcending the environment no matter how hard they try.

While it clearly meant that competition never stops as long as competitors exist, and if you miss the flow, you’ll quickly decline, at this moment.

To me, it came with another meaning.

The Red Queen.

No, should I call her the White ‘Queen’ with her silver hair?

Everyone here dreams of being the student council president in their hearts and slowly grows, but they all maintain their positions because they’re running in the same direction.

Originally, it was impossible to surpass the fame created by that monstrous talent combined with effort. One could only conform to reality or fall like Icarus, who dared to reach for the sun. Even now, some nobles were seen admiringly gazing at her as she confidently finished speaking. Pride swelled in their chests.

After she finished her response, she turned her gaze to the side. The Holy Maiden in the second seat, and me in the third. …Unfortunately for the prince, even the empty seat due to illness didn’t catch her eye.

‘He should have seen this.’

“Yielding the top spot to a commoner, how can we call ourselves exemplary nobles to them? It’s an intolerable disgrace. Especially yielding to our most cherished subordinate is even more so.”

Even the subsequent remarks were perfect. Assertively declaring her aim for the student council presidency, her speech also exuded a competitive spirit.

Stimulated by the emotions thickly layered within the blue walls, various reactions were displayed by everyone.

“Ugh, pretending to be so grand.”

“We’re not even considered, are we?”

Some felt anger and embarrassment from being ignored.

“That’s the attitude of the top student…! There’s a reason why the lord takes notice.”

“Indeed, Luciana! That’s what makes her so charming! Rise and shine, uphold the dignity of a warrior….”

Some showed admiration and recognition.

“This is interesting. As a loyal servant, I have no choice but to follow. I’ll join as well.”

Of course, I was also similarly stimulated by Luciana’s broad provocation.

The note from Professor Marks, confirming my raised hand following Luciana’s lead, continued.

“Is that all? Well, the life of a loyal servant is tough indeed. You have to comply with your master’s will.”

…Hmm. Such is life. A subtle current flowed between Luciana and me as our eyes met. For this moment, we slightly deviated from the lord and servant relationship. I pursued Luciana’s overwhelming talent, and she aimed to crush my invincibility. The strange relationship that had persisted since our first encounter was still shining now.

…Well, at the very end, I’ll yield the top spot to her anyway.

The unfulfilled wish of Luciana in the game to become the top student

Considering the absolute power of the student council president, it would have greatly helped prevent her downfall.

“I, I want to join too! I’m from the North, and I’ve also researched nearby monsters!”

“Haha, isn’t it a bit much for a mere foot soldier to intervene? Yield to me.”

The students’ arms reached towards the sky in a disorderly fashion.

“…Is this the influence of one person?”

Mark’s professorial sigh seemed to meticulously list their names.

***

“It’s been a while since I visited my hometown.”

“We won’t stay long anyway. Besides, if we think about it, it hasn’t been that long since we left.”

Luciana, leisurely sipping the tea I brewed (or rather, Bathory in the shadows) from our carriage, maintained her composure even amidst the shaking carriage.

“Hmm. The coachman’s skill leaves much to be desired.”

“It’s probably because they’re from the Academy, not the Speda family. It’s not easy for someone from the central region to drive on such rough roads.”

Calming down Luciana, whose brows slightly furrowed, I surveyed the people in the carriage. The Academy, where grades equate to direct authority, was indeed a place where even the selection for such dispatched classes depended on grades.

As such, there was a unfamiliar figure among them.

“Ah, Lady Speda seems to have a rather close relationship with a loyal servant?”

Among them, ranking sixth in the entrance exam, with a sword at his waist and a blue cloak, was a youth who even at a glance seemed to proclaim, “I am from the East.”

His name was Theodore Trehar.

Simultaneously, “It seems a representative candidate from the East will join us here.”

He was one of the male leads in the game, known for his distinctive narrative and setting that attracted avid fans.

…Well, it wasn’t unexpected. He was a fervent Southerner, sincere even in that regard.

“There are various monsters living in the East, including sea serpents, but I wonder how it is in the North. Hahaha!”

He had come solely to test his skills against the fierce monsters of the North.

“Sigh. If only there weren’t additional points…”

In contrast, the reason here was quite realistic. Since the succession to the title wasn’t certain, grades at the Academy were crucial for her.

Ranking seventh in the entrance exam was Camilla Roberk, a noblewoman from the West seen for the first time in a long while.

She brushed her green side hair over her ear, “Somehow, except for me, everyone else seems to be from noble families representing each region.”

Truly, this year’s first-years represented the golden age of the Academy.

“So, Lady Speda, what’s the name of the monster we’re going to face…?”

With her arms crossed, Luciana replied, seemingly unimpressed.

“By this time, it’s probably the time for Wendigos to start jumping around. I’m sure father has a reason for requesting our help.”

Luciana’s gaze turned cold.

***

Monsters adapt to the characteristics of each region, but among them, the monsters adapted to the harsh environment of the North are particularly fierce.

The three Great monsters of the North.

Over the years, residents bestowed such nicknames on the creatures that plagued the North.

The Diamond Wolf with exceptional organizational skills, the Yeti with its massive physique and formidable strength, and the alluring Wendigo.

As the carriage entered the city walls, the gaze of deer hidden among the evergreens followed relentlessly.

Thud.

It was accompanied by the sound of something being sharpened.

Act 108

Prev I TOC I Next

Aiden’s secret laboratory.

This is a place closely related to the event “Bloody Tuesday” that appears in *Let’s Kill the Demon Lord*. Due to random elements, it’s impossible to pinpoint its exact location. However, based on my previous experiences, only I could identify the specific location of the “laboratory.”

“So, where should we investigate?”

“Near the underground waterway. If you find anything suspicious there, let me know.”

Aiden created his laboratory in such a place not only to keep his experiments hidden from the outside world but also because it was a good spot for disposing of waste.

‘During the process of creating fake Demon Horns, a lot of wastewater is produced.’

Because of this, despite its random nature, Aiden’s “laboratory” was always located in the slums, connected to the waterways.

“An underground waterway… Why there?”

“It’s the Black Knight’s orders.”

If you want an explanation, there’s a lot to tell. It’s just a hassle.

Like the event “Bloody Tuesday.”

Like the story related to the fake horns.

Like the background explanation of the narrative.

It’s all a real bother.

“Got it. If the Black Knight said so, there must be a reason.”

The enormous trust in the “Black Knight.” If this person knew that I was the object of that trust, how surprised would she be?

“But if we’re investigating the whole slum, it might be too much for just our ‘Nameless Gang,’ right?”

Everything is already prepared.

“It’s fine. We’re also getting cooperation from other sides.”

“Of course, it’s the Black Knight. He must have persuaded others without us knowing.”

Hmm. Misunderstandings are free, but let’s go with that.

“Alright then.”

With that, Meyer gathered mana on her fingertip and sent it into the sky. It was one of the spirits she controlled.

Whisper.

Watching Meyer whisper something, I added a word to her.

“It would be better if you acted without your mask on. Since the incident with Gerard, the ‘Dawn Society’ has been somewhat monitoring the ‘Nameless Gang.’”

“Got it.”

Meyer nodded and whispered a few more words to the spirit, which soon disappeared into the sky.

“Then, I’ll join the search like the other members…”

“No, Miss Meyer has something else to do. Could you follow me?”

With a gentle smile and his eyes half-closed, this sly villain’s words made Meyer tilt her head in confusion.

“Why me?”

Her resistance made my head ache. It’s natural, considering her trust in “Julian” was almost zero. No matter how sweetly Julian persuaded her or how grand a future he painted, she wouldn’t believe him. I had no choice but to use the ultimate cheat.

“It’s a request from the Black Knight. He specifically asked for you, saying only you could do it.”

“Only I can…”

For a moment, her eyes sparkled but then fell into contemplation.

Mumbling a few times, “Can I live up to the Black Knight’s expectations?” she finally nodded.

“Alright. Where do we go?”

“The Magic Tower.”

“The Magic Tower? Why there?”

At the mention of the “Magic Tower,” Meyer’s face twisted as if she had seen a disgusting insect. Her reaction made me curious.

Do You Have a Reason to Hate That Place?

It’s just that the wizards use it for their research…

‘Hmm…?’

Thinking about it carefully, I might understand. Among all the wizards I’ve met, only a handful seemed normal. Initially, they gnashed their teeth at me, but now they treat me like a superior—what weirdos.

There’s the insane one researching and experimenting with fake horns. Then there’s the clueless one who tried to eliminate me by collaborating with the lunatic. It’s like a trio of weirdos!

Are all researchers like this? It’s as if they all have a screw loose…

Wait, come to think of it, they all joined the Dawn Society, didn’t they? Maybe the problem isn’t the Society, but rather the problematic people who joined it.

“There is an item we need to retrieve from there.”

“An item to retrieve? What is it?”

“A resonance stone.”

Since Aiden’s laboratory researches fake horns, there’s a high probability of encountering demons there. As we can’t be sure what kind of demon might appear, it’s wise to have a ‘resonance stone’ as insurance.

“A resonance stone? And this is also a request from the Black Knight?”

“Yes.”

Meyer fell into brief contemplation.

“The Black Knight clearly keeps his identity hidden, so how do you know so much about him?”

I flinched. Suddenly, Meyer, who always seemed naive, appeared different.

Well, I guess you’d need to have at least this level of intellect to be a wizard.

“Perhaps you…”

She looked at me with half-closed eyes.

Did I make a mistake somewhere? Reflecting on our conversation, I realize I might have spoken too much from my own perspective. If she had any sense, she could infer that I’m the ‘Black Knight.’

Maybe I underestimated Meyer too much…

“You must have immense trust from the Black Knight.”

I see, you’re just a fool after all.

“Unlike the rumors, the Black Knight must find you reliable enough to trust so deeply.”

I felt grateful to Meyer for being less perceptive than expected.

***

A creaking sound accompanied a carriage cutting through the night fog of the capital.

The carriage, bearing the unmistakable emblem of the Donassien family, began to slow down and stopped in a dark alley. Emerging from it was Aiden, who had recently failed to form a corporation with Bishop ‘Korund.’

“To think you’d be living in such a filthy place.”

As usual, with a cynical expression, he stepped out of the carriage, his lips curling into an unseemly sneer.

His derision was directed at a man pitifully leaning against the alley wall.

Though draped in ragged clothing, the man’s eyes burned with a certain emotion.

“How did you know I was here?”

“Few people know this capital’s layout as well as I do.”

“Is it because of that damn ‘laboratory’?”

As the word ‘laboratory’ left the man’s lips, Aiden’s sneer deepened.

“So you knew too, Bishop Gerard. Or should I say, Sir Gerard?”

Gerard flinched at the word ‘Bishop.’

Then, glaring at Aiden with eyes like a blazing volcano, he spoke.

“Ah, but since you’ve been ousted, calling you ‘Bishop’ might be a bit off, right?”

“Shut your mouth! Before I tear it apart right now!”

Gerard reached into his coat, revealing a gleaming dagger and a fluttering right sleeve that caught Aiden’s eye.

“Calm down. I’m not here to eliminate you, even though you’ve been branded a traitor.”

Aiden then smiled slightly.

“Aren’t we comrades with the same enemy?”

At the mention of the “same enemy,” Gerard’s shoulders twitched again.

“You mean that despicable Julian?”

“Yes.”

As Aiden confirmed, Gerard’s left hand trembled.

Seeing this, Aiden clicked his tongue internally. ‘Useless.’

Gerard’s fist shook as if from rage, but Aiden could detect an underlying “murkiness” in his emotions—fear.

“Is the mighty Gerard really going to back down like this? Doesn’t make any sense, does it?”

With no allies left in the Dawn Society, Aiden aimed to provoke Gerard.

“Shouldn’t you also avenge that severed right arm?”

“I have no desire for revenge against Sir Tenellon.”

“It was Julian who orchestrated that.”

Gritting his teeth.

“If I could kill that bastard Julian, I’d do anything! But…”

“But?”

“If it’s not certain, I can’t cooperate.”

Aiden frowned slightly. Though Gerard’s eyes burned with vengeance, there was a hint of hesitation.

“He’s the embodiment of cunning… no, he’s a demon! I dread the thought of facing such a demon again!”

Gerard spoke as if he was about to collapse.

“I couldn’t grasp what was happening behind the scenes. The Nameless Gang, the Black Knight, it was all part of his scheme…”

His pupils, once filled with rage, were now overcome by an undeniable fear.

“You say that, but aren’t you also aiming to make a comeback?”

Gerard, a man who seemed to personify ambition, wouldn’t be satisfied with this current state. He would find a way to regain his position in the Dawn Society, using any means necessary to remove the disgraceful label attached to him.

“Do you have any method? Any way to kill Julian?”

‘If I had a sure method, would I have gone to the trouble of coming here?’ Such words nearly escaped Aiden’s lips, but he refrained.

“Of course.”

Gerard was merely a pawn to be used and discarded. Despite being expelled from the Dawn Society, he still had connections that Aiden could exploit.

“So, what is it you want from me?”

“Now we’re getting somewhere.”

Aiden then began to outline his plan.

“Children. Preferably ones whose disappearance wouldn’t be suspicious… yes, that would be best.”

“Does it have to be children?”

“Yes, it has to be.”

Gerard, knowing full well what was required for experiments on fake horns, immediately understood Aiden’s implication. Aiden was willing to forsake basic human decency for his experiments and for his family’s secrets.

This was the desire of the man named ‘Aiden’ and his resolution to abandon his humanity.

“You’re a madman.”

“Ha, coming from someone who recruited soldiers from the slums, you’ve got some nerve,” Aiden retorted, making Gerard narrow his eyes sharply.

“Isn’t it easy to find such kids in the slums?” Aiden redirected his gaze from the direction of the slums back to Gerard.

“What does that have to do with taking down Julian?” Gerard’s overly cautious demeanor made Aiden frown slightly, though he didn’t show it.

“It’s not directly related. It’s simply to complete my research.”

“…Do you really believe that diverting attention to this will help you deal with Julian?”

“That part is not difficult.”

Despite Aiden’s assurance, Gerard started to doubt him.

“Didn’t you just fail in your negotiations with Korund recently? And you didn’t manage to carry out the third prince Kaldraak’s orders properly, either.”

“So you’re well-informed about the situation with Prince Kaldraak.”

“Despite my current state, I still have connections within the royal family. My family isn’t completely ruined yet.”

Aiden tensed slightly. Gerard knowing about this could potentially become a problem for him.

“The third prince doesn’t want reconciliation with the Holy Nation. He’s connected with the military, and he needs to start a war to secure his claim to the throne.”

“You’re well-informed.”

Aiden cleared his throat to change the mood for a moment.

“Indeed, the matter with the Holy Nation was unexpected even for me. But you can consider the failed negotiations with Bishop Korund as part of my strategy.”

“A strategy…?”

“Yes.”

Although not every detail was planned, the resulting butterfly effect would unfold as Aiden intended.

“So, it was to create another force to oppose Julian?”

Aiden let out a small laugh, impressed by Gerard’s accurate deduction.

“If Korund is a wizard, he would understand the significance of the crisis Julian has caused.”

A challenge to the authority of wizards. Korund would recognize how arrogant and insolent that was, even without being told.

‘I don’t care if my honor is tarnished. What matters is the troublesome Julian’s demise.’

“In that sense, Gerard, why not take this opportunity to unleash your well-honed vengeance?”

“Hmm.”

Gerard groaned and began to contemplate Aiden’s direct proposal. After all, there was no answer other than affirmation he could give to this question.

Aiden waited with an inward smile, knowing Gerard would have no choice but to take the bait and cooperate with him.

“No. I will not collaborate with you.”

Round 60

Prev | TOC | Next

The next morning.

I carried Ara on my back, rubbing her sleepy eyes, as we headed towards Ara Hongryeon .

Jae-seong was carrying the backpack with Bokkeum inside.

“Hoo, hoo.”

“Nervous?”

“Yeah! I can’t believe I’m actually going to see Shimomoto Orie in person…”

“….”

Shouldn’t you be nervous about cooking instead?

Since I couldn’t understand Jae-seong’s inner thoughts, I just let it go.

Using public transportation, we arrived at the Ara Hongryeon Guild, where we were greeted by Hanul, who had been informed of our arrival.

“Ha ha ha! You’re here!”

“Did you sleep well?”

“Hello.”

When Jae-seong bowed and greeted, Hanul immediately extended his hand for a handshake.

Jae-seong shook hands without showing any sign of surprise.

“Ha ha ha! You’re a bit different from Kyu-seong!”

“Thank you for the compliment.”

Why is that a compliment, dear brother?

We headed to the cafeteria inside the guild building.

The cafeteria was a sophisticated place with a huge open kitchen installed.

“Guild master, did you sleep well?”

“Welcome, Mr. Kyu-seong.”

The guild master and some guild members I hadn’t seen before were already waiting there.

And I noticed Ino Junichi and a young woman in a chef’s outfit.

“Ooh.”

Jae-seong let out a suppressed cheer.

It seemed he was more concerned about that Japanese chef than being surrounded by all these awakened individuals.

Should I call him brave, or just clueless…?

“Everyone, this is Lee Kyu-seong, a new awakened member of Ara Hongryeon . I wanted to introduce him earlier, but this turned out to be a great opportunity.”

Guild master Han Seok-jun stepped forward to introduce me.

I greeted the guild members and introduced myself.

“Hello, I am Lee Kyu-seong, a Level 1 awakened. Thanks to the guild master seeing me favorably, I was able to join the guild. I look forward to working with you.”

“Oh, it’s always good to have new members. Welcome.”

“Wow, I’m curious about your abilities since you joined as a Level 1 awakened. Oh! I didn’t mean to undermine the fact that you are Level 1!”

“Welcome, Kyu-seong!”

Not all the guild members were present, but there seemed to be more than ten.

And they all genuinely welcomed me.

I was worried they might see me as a parachute recruit, but fortunately, there was no sign of that.

‘They all trust the guild master.’

They seemed to trust the guild master’s decision without question.

They looked as if they believed there must be a good reason for my joining.

“I’m glad there’s an opportunity to show you my abilities. This person next to me is my brother, and he will be cooking for you.”

“Cooking?”

It seemed they hadn’t been notified in advance.

When I glanced at the guild master, Hanul, and So-yeon, they were smiling mischievously.

“We just thought it was a welcome party.”

“Well, we cleared our schedules for today anyway, so it doesn’t matter.”

The curious people soon looked at me with anticipation.

They seemed interested in seeing the abilities I mentioned.

“Ha ha ha! I’m looking forward to it, Kyu-seong!”

“Ha ha. Since my brother will be cooking, I’ll just be a spectator today.”

Meanwhile, Jae-seong was taking out cooking ingredients from Bokkeum.

The vegetables we had diligently prepped the previous night came out.

“Can I take a look?”

Eek!

When Chef Orie showed interest, Jae-seong was slightly surprised but soon nodded.

Chef Orie’s eyes started to shine as she examined the sealed ingredients. It was as if she had discovered an exciting toy.

“Ha ha ha! This is really exciting! Brother, shouldn’t we call our team over?”

“Let’s do that.”

At Guild Master Han Seok-jun’s words, people dressed as chefs, who had been waiting somewhere, appeared.

They seemed to be the regular chefs of Ara Hongryeon , who usually used this kitchen.

“Oh, Chef Orie!”

“To think we’d see her in person…”

Interestingly, their reactions were similar to my brother’s.

The chefs gathered and started discussing what to make with the available ingredients.

‘Jae-seong’s English is pretty good. That’s unexpected.’

Well, he had considered studying abroad, so I guess knowing English was basic for him.

Come to think of it, I had been so busy trying to become an awakened and handling various things after that, I hadn’t had time to pay attention to what my siblings were doing.

I should pay more attention and take more interest in them from now on.

Soon, the chefs had sorted out their opinions and began cooking in their respective positions. It was impressive to see them work in perfect harmony despite probably working together for the first time.

‘Jae-seong is quite impressive.’

He looked remarkable, doing his job without losing confidence among such renowned chefs.

“Kyu-seong.”

“Yes, brother.”

“Has your brother been cooking for a long time?”

“Yes. He even planned to study culinary arts in France, but he missed the opportunity because I became an awakened.”

Hanul seemed puzzled and tilted his head, unable to understand the connection.

“What does you becoming an awakened have to do with it?”

“Our family went bankrupt. We overextended ourselves financially to awaken me.”

“Oh, that’s quite a sad story.”

“It’s not. In hindsight, it was the right choice, so it wasn’t a bad thing. Now I can send him to study abroad if he wants.”

“That’s true! Ha ha!”

Since past time can’t be undone, it’s more constructive to plan for the future rather than live in regret.

All that’s left is to repay my brother for what he missed, with interest.

“I’ll serve the first dish.”

A server brought the first dish.

From the start of cooking, a fantastic aroma had been filling the cafeteria.

People craned their necks, trying to find the source of the smell, and now it was time to discover it.

“This is an appetizer. It’s a salad made with ricotta cheese, special tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and Polgrace, a dungeon plant. It’s served with a sauce made from another dungeon plant, Icedrill, liquefied.”

It was certainly different from what was made at home.

The presentation, the sauce, and the additional ingredients that I didn’t have stood out.

Gurgle!

“The wine is Pago de Cos from the Bordeaux region. It’s a 2014 vintage with an energetic feel…”

Wow, they’re serving wine in the cafeteria?

I was already impressed by the course-like structure of the meal, but this was truly amazing.

‘This is the prowess of the 5th ranked guild in Korea. So what about the guilds ranked above it?’

Junichi, who was sitting right next to me, first sipped the wine and then eagerly forked the salad.

Since I didn’t know much about alcohol, I just ate the salad.

“Hmm?!”

Oh, this is incredible!

The ingredients all blended together nicely. Honestly, I was worried since all the other ingredients, apart from the vegetables I brought, were either new or unfamiliar to me…

“Wow!”

“I mean, can a salad really be this delicious?”

“…From now on, I won’t be able to eat salads while dieting. Knowing that such delicious salads exist, I can never go back to the old ways!”

The compliments kept coming.

Since it was the reaction I expected, I continued eating the salad without much thought. But the two sturdy brothers beside me kept glancing at me.

“As expected, Kyu-seong’s ingredients are fantastic. But the sensation I felt yesterday was even more amazing.”

“Hmph! It’s just a salad so far, Junichi! Be ready!”

Since most of the ingredients were already prepared and there were many people in the kitchen, the dishes were coming out quickly.

And it seemed like the salad was just the beginning as the tastes and flavors kept getting better and better, rendering everyone silent.

Clatter – clatter –

Munch munch, slurp slurp!

People were burying their faces into their plates, seemingly dedicating themselves to finishing their dishes cleanly, forgetting to even speak or express their admiration.

The funny thing was that everyone had the same reaction, not just one or two people.

Of course, I was no exception.

‘Wow, combining these ingredients creates such a flavor…?!’

The harmony between my ingredients and the ones in the kitchen maximized the taste. The hidden flavors of my familiar crops were being revealed.

Ah, this is why people cook.

I was eating in awe when I suddenly heard a strange sound.

“Ugh, ugh.”

“Mr. Junichi?”

Ino Junichi was shedding tears while eating horned beast meat with sweet potato puree.

Surprisingly, this time, Hanul also started crying.

“…”

Though he wasn’t making any sound, Hanul’s tears were flowing much more than Junichi’s.

The sight of him chewing mechanically with his eyes closed while crying was eerie.

“Ha, Mr. Kyu-seong.”

“Mr. Junichi, are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine. Rather, thank you so much.”

Junichi wiped his tears and blew his nose. Then he grabbed both my hands and bowed his head.

“Thank you so much for giving me this experience. I also thank you again for offering me this opportunity the day before.”

“I’m glad you’re satisfied.”

“If you ever come to Japan, or even if you don’t, if you need help, please contact me through the business card I gave you. For anything related to you, I’ll drop everything and come running.”

“Ha ha. I appreciate the words alone.”

While the warm conversation was ongoing, the main dish ended, and it was time for dessert. The desserts were also made with my ingredients.

“The inside is filled with sweet potato mousse, and the outside is coated with hardened chocolate.”

“This is ice cream made to maximize the sweetness of carrots. It’s best enjoyed with the syrup from Masmus next to it.”

“These are cookies concentrated from eggplants. They were baked using an artifact oven to deepen the flavor.”

These dishes, which would normally be impossible to make in a short time, were quickly created using the power of items and artifacts.

And once again, experiencing a new world, I understood why Jae-seong was so eager to research cooking.

‘The world of cooking is quite deep.’

The dishes I knew were not everything.

And I realized that to create such dishes, the help of tools is essential.

When I earn enough money later to open a restaurant for Jae-seong, I’ll need to consider these items and artifacts.

“Ha, it feels like I just had a dream.”

“What did we just experience? Did we eat a meal, or did we visit another world?”

As they enjoyed the tea and coffee that came with the final dessert, people finally started to speak. It was nice to see them sharing their impressions and forming a sense of camaraderie.

“Phew, today was a truly great experience for us as well.”

The chefs came out of the kitchen with satisfied smiles and greeted everyone. This prompted a burst of applause from the crowd.

Clap clap clap clap!

Whistle-!

“Today was truly amazing! It was incredible!”

“Thank you to all the chefs who worked hard! I hope to experience such emotion again. Thank you!”

At the center of it all was Jae-seong.

The chefs from Ara Hongryeon  and Chef Orie attributed the success to Jae-seong’s input, as if his information had been helpful.

“Even though it was the first time using these ingredients, we were able to handle them almost perfectly thanks to Jae-seong.”

“Thank you very much, Jae-seong.”

Seeing Jae-seong being cheered made me feel happy as well. It felt like all the hard work had paid off.

For both Jae-seong and me.

We weren’t wrong.

“Thank you, thank you.”

Jae-seong, uncharacteristically teary-eyed, gave his thanks. Then suddenly, he froze.

“Huh? Jae-seong?”

I called out, worried about his sudden stop, and Jae-seong muttered with a bewildered expression.

“B-Brother.”

“What’s wrong? What’s happening?”

Did he get too excited and give himself a headache?

Is something wrong with his body?

People looked on with concern at the sudden situation. Amidst the many worrying thoughts, Jae-seong finally spoke.

“I see something strange.”

“What?”

“I see the word ‘Awakening’. I-Is it saying I’ve awakened?”

“What?!”

Strike 157

“Did he lure us here on purpose? Interesting, but what does he plan to do alone? Shouldn’t he lure us based on who we are?”

Assassin Burns could not hide his astonishment.

It was said that Hyun-soo was a level 307 blacksmith.

“Even if he wasn’t a blacksmith, we are quite well-known in Ares.”

As if to prove it, they received a notification about an unknown status ailment that had bound them.

[Your high resistance will counteract in 2 seconds.]

Indeed, Hyun-soo’s resistance was faster than he himself expected.

The command that caught the quartet was about to be lifted after merely 5 seconds.

Burns was especially unique.

[Assassin’s Base]

[Resists all status ailments instantly.]

[Controls the skill usage time of the one who caused the status ailment for 10 seconds.]

Immediately unleashing his power, Burns moved.

“Turns out well, that sword looks very precious at a glance. Where did he get such a sword?”

Burns was an exceptional assassin.

Ordinary users around level 300 could hardly react to his attacks.

Especially when their skill usage was disabled for 10 seconds.

‘What was that black stream that was sucked into the sword?’

Regrettably, it was too late to stop a skill that had already been activated.

As Burns plunged into Hyun-soo’s side, he smiled.

‘Gaming is all about control.’

Indeed, it was this very control that had placed him at rank 8 among assassins.

Clang!

Burns’ expression soon turned to dismay.

‘What?’

The man named Hyun-soo lightly lifted his sword to block.

Burns, within his field of vision, created three points of attack and moved accordingly.

Left, left, right.

Swish, swish-swash!

Burns’ expression was filled with confusion.

‘What…?’

He felt an unknown power.

Burns was also a martial arts black belt in reality.

However, Hyun-soo seemed not to have learned real-life martial arts.

Yet, his movements were exceptional.

‘My life-or-death situations have been numerous.’

Hyun-soo realized it.

Before easily blocking Burns’ attacks, he had been worried.

It was his first time seriously fighting against players known as strong.

And he realized it.

‘I have grown.’

Though there was still a long way to go, he had clearly grown.

This growth stemmed from numerous life-or-death experiences unknown to regular users.

The fifth, the fourth Calamity.

The Giant King.

Descendant of Spear Heaven, the Minor World Tree.

‘These have combined to make me who I am today.’

Hyun-soo forcefully swung his sword upward.

Ssskreeek-

[A critical hit has occurred.]

[You have received 54,313 damage.]

“Arghhh!”

Burns, slashed diagonally, was looking at a notification he had never experienced before.

‘Da-damage in the 50,000s…!?’

Burns had indeed met many strong opponents here.

Among them was a swordsman within the top 40 national rankings.

That swordsman’s damage output was in the 20,000s.

[HP falls below 70%.]

‘Even though I’m an assassin, this is…!’

It was beyond common sense. Fortunately, the status ailments of the other three had also been lifted.

Dun, the Mountain Keeper.

[Mountain Keeper]

[Becomes 30% stronger in the mountains.]

In the mountains, he was a force not even top 30 rankers could easily handle.

Especially dangerous in the mountains due to the effect included in his ‘Mountain Keeper’ skill.

[The power of Mountain Keeper instantly attracts nearby monsters.]

It happened in an instant.

All the monsters of the Blessed Ground were pulled in front of Dun as if dragged there.

Of course, he couldn’t freely control the monsters.

But he could at least designate a single target to attack exclusively.

[Target designated.]

[Snowfield’s Etti Lv.331]

[Snowfield’s Orc Lv.325]

[Snowfield’s Ogre Lv.339]

There were about sixty creatures.

And their levels were significantly higher than Hyun-soo, who was in front of them.

Of course, killing Hyun-soo might turn out to be a dangerous move for them too.

But Dun, as the Mountain Keeper, had enough ability to avoid that bad move.

Kukukung, Kukukukung-

And Hyun-soo’s expression was filled with dismay.

“No matter how monstrous your damage output is, you can’t handle this many!”

Dun was a high-ranker.

He could stand in that place because he thought differently from ordinary people.

Dun had seen the unthinkable damage output when Burns was slashed.

He had no doubt it was a momentary power.

Moreover, even if the sword’s attack power had been enhanced, it didn’t mean the physical defense of a level 300 had been enhanced.

Then.

“Kuhooo!”

“Kuaaaa!”

“Kahaha!”

“Kyahaha!”

A horde of about sixty monsters surrounded Hyun-soo.

Creatures ranging from 2 to 4 meters in height were indiscriminately attacking him, centering around him.

And Won and Burns, Bon and Dun used their skills towards Hyun-soo in their midst.

[Tearing Apart]

[Indiscriminate Slicing]

[Throwing Spear Technique]

Using their respective skills, they saw Hyun-soo’s HP drop below 25% within just 3 seconds.

3m.

Suddenly, they laughed maniacally as they broke through the crowd of monsters.

“Crazy fool!”

“To be so arrogant, and to end up like this in less than 10 seconds!”

The quartet couldn’t help but laugh insanely.

Yes, it had only been 10 seconds.

It seemed he had been arrogantly luring them.

They closed the distance even more.

1.5m.

Dun narrowed the distance down to that and anticipated.

‘Thinking of the dying man’s face, I feel good.’

Especially Dun, he had vowed to make him die as painfully as possible.

Still not satisfied, Dun finally faced him through the monsters.

“This damn bird… huh?”

Dun and his companions, who hadn’t seen him due to the tall monsters, were taken aback.

Hyun-soo was being torn apart.

No, just by looking at the HP bar floating above his head, he was dying.

But Hyun-soo, being lynched by a crowd of monsters, was standing firm.

Especially his chilling gaze made Dun shrink back.

‘What, what is this…?’

After all, wasn’t he about to die?

But then, seeing them so close, he said,

“Thank you.”

Hyun-soo had been waiting for a certain notification for a long time.

From level 50 to now.

The notification he had been waiting for all this time came at that moment.

***

Hyun-soo and Barad last met when Hyun-soo was elevated from a viscount to a baron.

After receiving his title, Hyun-soo shared stories with Barad from their past.

Among those stories, Bella was particularly impressed by one.

Bella reminisced about their conversation.

‘Your Majesty, the swordsmanship of the Sword King you taught me is indeed incredible, but strangely, it grows very slowly. Is this normal?’

Barad responded with a wry smile.

‘It’s because you are not yet qualified.’

According to Hyun-soo, he has never seen the Sword King’s swordsmanship level up even once.

The swordsmanship skills used by kingdom soldiers and knights typically level up at every 30 levels.

At the very least, they level up once every 50 levels.

But it was ironic that Hyun-soo, having learned it in his 50s and now exceeding level 250, has never leveled up.

“Your Majesty, may I ask you something?”

“What is it?”

“Why doesn’t the Sword King’s swordsmanship of Baron Hyun-soo grow?”

Barad smiled slightly.

“Bella usually isn’t interested in other people’s affairs.”

However, she had a particular interest in Hyun.

Barad repeated the same words he had told Hyun-soo.

“It’s because at that time, Hyun-soo was too weak.”

He was just a level 50 foreigner at the time.

Barely taking his first steps.

“Even if he had grown stronger, his body wouldn’t have been able to withstand it.”

Normally, leveling up would mean reaching level 100.

Using the Sword King’s swordsmanship at level 100 is already against common sense.

“The more you refine your swordsmanship, the more you improve yourself. But having seen Hyun-soo recently, I felt this.”

Barad thought of Hyun-soo at that time and smiled.

“…He has become a magnificent warrior.”

This meant that Hyun-soo was growing.

It also meant that the time for the Sword King’s swordsmanship to grow was approaching.

“Like Hyun-soo said, the growth of the Sword King’s swordsmanship must have felt ridiculously slow.”

By normal standards, other users would have increased their swordsmanship level by at least 5.

“The interesting thing is that this one time will show all the growth that has happened so far.”

“……!”

Bella understood the meaning of those words.

Although much slower than others, once it grows, it would be better than the growth of five levels in other skills.

Bella realized.

‘This is the real essence of the Sword King’s swordsmanship…’

The growth of swordsmanship is finite.

Once you create a level 9 swordsmanship, you can’t grow it further and need to learn a new skill.

But that is not an easy task.

However, though slow, once it grows, its power encompassing five levels of growth allows it to grow longer and stronger than ordinary swordsmanship.

Bella suddenly became curious.

‘Just once.’

She wondered how much power that one growth would have.

***

It was a long-awaited moment for Hyun-soo.

[Sword King’s swordsmanship levels up.]

The skill proficiency, which had been extremely difficult to increase, rose sharply at the moment he reached level 300.

Also, Hyun-soo, surrounded by monsters, was not dying.

It was to fill the 99.1% proficiency of the Sword King’s swordsmanship.

It wasn’t necessary to fill it.

‘The range of the monsters extends well beyond 20 meters.’

Hyun-soo needed a means to catch them all at once.

[You are holding Asnium.]

[HP has fallen below 10%.]

[HP recovers up to 15%.]

So he had waited with a strategy of giving up flesh to take bone.

Level 250.

During that vast leveling up, he felt a thrill from the single level up of the Sword King’s skill.

It was beyond his own satisfaction; it was awe-inspiring.

Dun, the Mountain Keeper, peered through the monsters.

“Thank you.”

“……?”

Dun couldn’t understand what he meant.

What is there to thank for?

“Kill him!”

Kiiiiing-

A piercing cry that numbs the senses.

[The Cry of the Sword]

The essence of the Cry of the Sword lies in its indiscriminate slashing.

[Cuts through enemies 50% faster.]

[Slashes all recognized enemies with 230% additional damage indiscriminately.]

[Even if not directly slashed, it cuts within a 30m radius and ignores all defenses.]

Being faster means it can deal 50% more damage than usual.

Moreover, the usual Cry of the Sword had a critical weakness.

It required multiple movements.

He had to lower his knees, breathe lightly, and draw the sword from its sheath.

‘Not anymore.’

The four people who reached close to Hyun-soo to stab or use skills on him were stunned.

And then, Hyun-soo swung up a supremely enhanced sword technique, over 610% strengthened.

Purluk-

Originally, the sound of the Cry of the Sword was ‘kwakwakwak’.

That sound changed.

Kururururururuk, kwajajajajajak-!

The sound of hundreds of blades being swung.

Dun couldn’t understand.

‘…What?’

The snow-covered mountain.

All the monsters surrounding Hyun-soo were being slaughtered and falling.

‘What am I even looking at…?’

His own allies were turning to ash.

The dozens of split monsters were the same.

Thud-

‘What the hell is this guy!’

Hyun-soo, who pointed his sword at the neck, smiled coldly.

The clear reason why he thanked Dun was now evident in front of him.

[Experience points tripled, drop rate tripled are applied.]

To the sixty-odd monsters, and to the quartet.

An extraordinary notification struck him.
